INDIGENOUS - Vanishing Americans (2013) Indigenous is an American blues-rock group that came to prominence in the late 1990s. The band originally consisted of two brothers, Mato Nanji, Pte (bass guitar), along with their sister, Wanbdi (drums, vocals), and their cousin, Horse (percussion). "Vanishing Americans" combines the best elements of past Indigenous CDs, with some rootsy influences from artists like Jr. Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside yet retaining the retro blues rock edge of artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Cream. Indigenous songs are powered by lead singer/lead guitarist Mato Nanji who is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive blues rock players/singers on the circuit today. TRACKS: 01. After 7,000 concerts, two dozen albums and more than 40 years 'on the road', Hans is ready with a new solo album. In Wishing Well Theessink digs deep into the treasure of American homespun music, and comes up with some wonderful new interpretations of traditional songs, together with strong original compositions and personal favorites by Bob Dylan, Brownie McGhee and Townes Van Zandt. He is a master when it comes to making songs his own: even the familiar classics end up sounding like typical Theessink-music. With mentions of moonlight drives, tightrope rides, and titles of past Doors tunes in "The Solar Boat," drummer Tony Williams, guitarist Larry Carlton, bassist Jerry Scheff, and producer Bruce Botnick generate an eerie sound behind the singer, creating a title track as mysterious and fun as anything by Morrison and company. With intense rhythms and tons of creativity, Ray Manzarek brings us on a musical journey as unique as The Phantom's Divine Comedy, and if Robbie Krieger brought the commercial element to the Doors' gravy train, it is clear here that the eldest of the quartet had more a hand in the development of the Doors persona than he may have been given credit for. One can't fault Krieger and John Densmore for stretching out with Butts Band, but there is a certain responsibility hit artists should have to their audience. The Bright Midnight releases finally address those concerns, but decades before the opening of the Doors tape vaults, that sound from L.A. Woman was most obvious on "The Purpose of Existence Is" on this solo effort. Yes, Ray Manzarek veers off into his jazz leanings; given the players on this, how could he not But he gives enough of a taste of past glories to make The Golden Scarab accessible, spoon feeding his musical styles to those who couldn't get enough of the music he was associated with. It's dramatic and cohesive, making more sense than Jim Morrison much of the time, with more controlled insanity. It is amazing that such a fine work as The Golden Scarab escaped the masses, and shameful that classic hits stations don't add this to their incessant repertoire. Had Jim Morrison lived, this is the path the music of the Doors should have taken. Smooth and demanding of repeated spins. - allmusic.com TRACKS: 01. He Can't Come Today 02. Solar Boat 03. DANNY BRYANT - Hurricane (2013) UK based guitarist Danny Bryant returns with his seventh studio album, Hurricane, an album as passionate as it is firmly grounded in rock and roll. The craftsmanship on Hurricane really relies on the ground it covers. Too many traditional blues albums treat their various tracks as venues for varying guitar solos without really worrying about varying the sound of each song, and Bryant seems determined to avoid getting caught in the same rut many of his contemporaries do. If there's one thing I want people to know about me, it's that I m a survivor,' says Popa Chubby. 'Here's my story: My dad died when I was seven. I was abandoned and raised myself. I moved to New York City when I was 18 and started playing music. I got a huge heroin habit and ended up strung out on the streets until I was in my early twenties. As with their first outing, Don't Explain, the project is in collaboration with producer Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Crowes). Each of the three principals suggested and selected tracks for the 11-song set list, which mines soulful classics previously made famous by Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Donnie Hathaway, Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miles, Tina Turner, Slackwax, Melody Gardot, and Nina Simone. The one-two punch of Hart's powerhouse vocals and Bonamassa s scorching solos both honors and reinvents the original recordings. They are backed by the same world class band that kept the grooves going on Don't Explain: Anton Fig (drums, percussion), Carmine Rojas (bass), Blondie Chaplin (rhythm guitar, backing vocals and percussion), Arlan Schierbaum (organ, piano). This time out, their mighty sound is augmented by a horn section, with Lee Thornburg on trumpets and trombones, and Ron Dziubla on saxophones. For Hart and Bonamassa, making music together grew out of the friendship and mutual artistic appreciation they developed after crossing paths on the road numerous times, particularly on the festival circuit in Europe. Bonamassa wanted to do a project with her, and came up with the idea for a soul covers record. Shirley, who s produced 12 of Bonamassa's albums, was enthusiastic, and Bonamassa contacted Hart. The chemistry clicked, and Don't Explain was released in 2011, followed now by 2013 s Seesaw in between, both Hart and Bonamassa have toured, recorded solo albums, and reached new career highs. - amazon.com TRACKS: 01. He can barely sing anymore, and the years of playing and touring have left his voice a hoarse croak, but make no mistake, he can still play the harp, and his stunning, overdriven blasts on the instrument are as powerful and as immediate as ever. He's the living embodiment of the Chicago blues, and one of the genre's last surviving founders of it, having mentored with the great Sonny Boy Williamson, and he recorded, played, and toured with Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters, cutting his first sides at the age of 19 for Chess Records. He's done this a long time, and as this delightful, joyous, stomping, and vibrant set shows, he doesn't need to sing to command the stage. Cotton wrote or co-wrote most of the songs here with the album's producer, Tom Hambridge, and the vocals are handled by guest artists, most of them by Darrell Nulisch, the former Texas Heat and Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets vocalist who has been handling the singing duties for Cotton's band for some time now, but Gregg Allman, Warren Haynes, Ruthie Foster, Delbert McClinton, and Keb' Mo' are also featured singers. But this isn't one of those duets albums that artists make in the twilight of their careers by any shot -- Cotton is amazing on these cuts, his harp blasts full of passion, power, and enough pure energy to light up the night sky. Cotton may not do somersaults on stage anymore, but his harp lines do, weaving in and out of these songs like a charging Chicago freight train. There isn't a single lame cut here, but the closer, "Bonnie Blue," with Cotton croaking out a moving vocal accompanied only by his harp and the resonator guitar playing of Colin Linden, is particularly poignant. Cotton may be cruising in on 80 years of age, but he's just released one of the best albums of his career. - allmusic.com TRACKS: 01. Cotton Mouth Man 02. Midnight Train 03. Mississippi Mud 04.
