V.A. - An All-Star Tribute To Lynyrd Skynyrd (2007)
VBR
If ever a band deserved a tribute, it is what some people refer to as the "real" Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band as it existed prior to the 1977 plane crash that killed three of its members. Some of the performances on this CD are much better than others. There are just enough good ones to make it worth a listen.

During the 1970s, fate - in combination with talent and hard work - would have it that one of the most dominating forces within the field of popular music was a group from Sweden. ABBA, a musical entity consisting of two couples, became by far the most successful act of that decade, even one of the biggest phenomenons of the whole century.

Best remembered for their bizarre chart smash "Hocus Pocus," Dutch progressive rock band Focus was formed in Amsterdam in 1969 by vocalist/keyboardist/flutist Thijs van Leer, bassist Martin Dresden, and drummer Hans Cleuver. With the subsequent addition of guitarist Jan Akkerman, the group issued its debut LP, In and Out of Focus, in 1970, earning a European cult following thanks to the single "House of the King." Dresden and Cleuver were replaced by bassist Cyril Havermanns and drummer Pierre Van der Linden for the English-language follow-up, Moving Waves; the record generated the hit "Hocus Pocus," a hallucinatory epic distinguished by Akkerman's guitar pyrotechnics and van Leer's demented yodeling. Easily one of the flat-out strangest songs ever to crack the American pop charts, the single peaked at number nine in the spring of 1973.

ALI FARKA TOURE with RY COODER - Talking Timbuktu (1994)
320
Talking Timbuktu is a groundbreaking record that vividly illustrates the Africa-Blues connection in real time. Ali Farka Toure, one of Mali's leading singer-guitarists, has a trance-like, bluesy style that, although deeply rooted in Malian tradition, bears astonishing similarity to that of John Lee Hooker or even Canned Heat. It's a mono-chordal vamp, with repetitive song lines cut with shards of blistering solo runs that shimmer like a desert mirage. Toure may be conversant with some blues artists, but it is unlikely that artists like Hooker or Robert Pete Williams ever heard these Malian roots, which makes the connection so uncanny. Ry Cooder, well versed in domestic and world guitar styles, is the perfect counterpoint in these extended songs/jams, his sinewy slide guitar intertwining with his partner's in a super world summit without barriers or borders.

"Father and Daughter (Father and Son)", is a cover version of a well-known Cat Stevens song and a duet with Cash's stepdaughter, Rosey Nix Adams, with slight changes in lyrics; a version of the same song would be released in 2003 on Unearthed, as a duet with Fiona Apple.

MAN - The Twang Dynasty (1992)
224
Man's first studio recording in over 15 years, 1992's Twang Dynasty finds Deke Leonard and an only slightly rejiggered group (drummer Terry Williams is absent) largely picking up where their late-'70s albums left off, bridging the gap between rollicking pub rock and twiddly prog with not-always-successful results. Most of the album leans rather toward the latter side of the equation; although songs like the opening guitar workout "A Feather on the Scales of Justice" have memorable riffs and catchy tunes to their credit, they could have stood to be trimmed by a minute or two. Indeed, as was often the case in the early CD age, the whole album could easily have been trimmed by 20 minutes, losing perhaps the overlong three-chord jam "Mad on Her" and the inscrutable blues "Chinese Cut" and trimming songs like the crystalline "Price" by half of its six-minute length to emphasize its clever pop-song gleam. Still, Twang Dynasty is a more credible comeback attempt than many of Man's '70s contemporaries made.

NICK DRAKE - Family Tree (2007)
320
A new album of rare unreleased Nick Drake material will surface this Summer and it even includes appearances from family members. Family Tree is a 28-track collection that will be available from June 19th. The material was taken from old cassettes and reel-to-reel recordings. On a handful of songs, Drake is joined by his mother Molly and sister Gabrielle, while some of the tracks are cover versions - including a version of Tomorrow Is A Long Time by Bob Dylan and Strolling Down The Highway by Bert Jansch.
“Family Tree” tells the story of Nick Drake’s musical development in the years prior to his debut album ‘Five Leaves Left’ in 1969. It features lo-fi recordings made on a reel-to-reel tape recorder at his home, Far Leys in Tanworth In Arden, as well as eight songs recorded on cassette during his sojourn in Aix En Provence. The inclusion of two songs by his mother Molly Drake bears testament to her influence on her son. His final performances on “Family Tree” Day Is Done and Way To Blue recorded by his Cambridge friend and arranger Robert Kirby are the end of one story and the beginning of another.

RORY GALLAGHER - Live At Montreux (2006)
VBR
A much adored figure in the U.K. and his native Ireland, the late Rory Gallagher made his name as a fearsome guitar player specializing in high-octane, no-frills blues and rock & roll. While his albums are certainly worth investigating, it's in the live setting that Gallagher really cut loose. LIVE AT MONTREUX nicely captures the singer-guitarist in full-tilt boogie, showcasing his deft fingerpicking abilities ("Out on the Western Plain"), his mastery of the blues ("Tore Down"), and the fiery enthusiasm that made him such a beloved performer ("Last of the Independents"). While the sound quality is occasionally rough, it only adds to the charm of these grittily explosive performances.

The eighteen selections of old timey music are reminiscent of Moon Pies and Nehi soda; resophonic sounds, songs and stories from the South. ZZ TOP - Eliminator (1983)
320
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (guitar, vocals); Dusty Hill (bass, synthesizers, vocals); Frank Beard (drums, percussion). ELIMINATOR, with its churning guitars and synthesizer hooks, was on the album charts for over a year, and had hits with "Sharp Dressed Man," "Gimme All Your Lovin'" and "Legs." The album and its accompanying videos were ubiquitous in 1983, on television ZZ Top was seen on MTV, "St. Elsewhere," even on the Tonight show. 1983 was the year Z.Z. Top went from being everyone's favourite bar-room boogie band to international superstars. Graced with mind-boggling and incredibly photogenic beards, a very neat trilogy of sexy videos and a collective ear for a quite distinct and highly stylized, if somewhat grizzled blues/pop, the sudden enormity of their success seems in retrospect like no real surprise. MTV had never quite seen the like and the attention given to the excellent 'Gimme All Your Lovin'' single was quickly repeated for both 'Sharp-Dressed Man' and the quite irreverent 'Legs'. It still sounds fresh, innovative and fun today. in the wake of many imitators.

PAUL McCARTNEY - Back In The U.S. - Live (2002)
192
The string of live American dates providing the music for this two-CD set was in support of McCartney's 2001 studio album DRIVING RAIN. Released in November of that year, RAIN's songs are forever marked by the after-effects of September 11th, like it or not. So these performances reverberate with a particular poignancy, whether McCartney's performing the uplifting, anthemic "Freedom," a song penned in response to the horrific act, or a ukulele- rendered cover of "Something" played in honor of the recently deceased George Harrison. The remainder of this live set features a nice mix of newer material ("Lonely Road," the soundtrack cut "Vanilla Sky"), Wings hits (glam-pop staple "Jet," romping pop suite "Band On The Run"), and rarities (the reggaefied "C Moon"). Along with revitalized, almost shockingly energetic versions of the inevitable Beatles classics ("Can't Buy Me Love," "I Saw Here Standing There" et al), we're even treated to McCartney giving SGT. PEPPER gem "Getting Better" its live debut some 34 years after its initial release.

INDIGO GIRLS - Despite Our Differences (2006)
320
The Indigo Girls (Emily Saliers - vocals, guitars, mandolin, ukulele anad Amy Ray - vocals, guitars, mandolin, harmonica) may still be the soft, folky females that tough rocker dudes love to mock, but the pair's 11th studio album serves to remind that Amy and Emily have been making surprisingly consistent albums packed with sharp songwriting and performances for a remarkably long time. In spite of the title, there's more that binds than separates this duo. After two decades of playing together, the former school pals think, act and even breathe as a single entity, weaving such a taut tapestry of sound that you'd think they were blood relatives. On their first record for a new label, they tackle the personal and the political, both Bush's wrongheaded approach to terrorism and the emotional terrorism of a disintegrating relationship. But despite the unstable subject manner, there's something reassuring about their warm, engaged voices, homespun philosophies and punkish attitude.

MICHAEL KATON - Live & On The Prowl (2007)
192
This live album features 12 hard & heavy blues rock songs in vintage Katon style. His sound is raw, mean and spirited, combining lowdown blues and boogie with the amped-up approach of the highest energy rock 'n' roll band you'd care to name. So beware of the boogieman from Hell, Michigan or you'll end up Boogified! For those who haven't seen him live, this is what you can expect: Katon won't stop beating on a guitar until he's squeezed every last thing he can possibly get out of it. That guitar is glad to go back in the case at the end of the night.

JOE SOUTH - Greatest Hits Vol. 1 (1970)
VBR
Singer/songwriter Joe South (born Joe Souter) began his career as a country musician, performing on an Atlanta radio station and joining Pete Drake's band in 1957. The following year, he recorded a novelty single, "The Purple People Eater Meets the Witch Doctor," and became a session musician in Nashville and at Muscle Shoals. South appeared on records by Marty Robbins, Eddy Arnold, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Bob Dylan (Blonde on Blonde), and Simon Garfunkel ("The Sounds of Silence"). During the '60s, South began working on his songwriting, crafting hits for Deep Purple ("Hush") and several for Billy Joe Royal, including "Down in the Boondocks." South began recording his own material in 1968, scoring a hit with the Grammy-winning "Games People Play" (Song of the Year) the following year. While South produced hits like "Don't It Make You Want to Go Home" and "Walk a Mile in My Shoes," Lynn Anderson had a smash country and pop hit in 1971 with South's "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden."

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND - The Lost Scepter Studio Recordings (1966)
256
Forty years after it was made, the Velvet Underground's first recording was purchased for 75 cents at a Manhattan flea market. It has thus become a financial success in cyberspace on eBay. Warren Hill, a collector from Montreal who discovered the 12-inch, bought the acetate LP four years ago (2002) at a flea market in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood for 75 cents. The recording turned out to be an in-studio acetate made during Velvet Underground's first recording over four days in April 1966 at New York's Scepter Studios. The record reportedly is only one of two in existence; the other is privately owned, with rumors circulating around the world about who the owner is. The studio recording — considered lost — is the first version of an LP that the artist Andy Warhol shopped to Columbia Records as a ready-to-release debut album by his protégé band, according to Eric Isaacson of Mississippi Records in Portland, Oregon. Isaacson helped Hill decipher the nature of his lucky find. "We cued it up and were stunned — the first song was not 'Sunday Morning' as on the 'Velvet Underground & Nico' Verve LP, but rather it was 'European Son' — the song that is last on that LP, and it was a version neither of us had ever heard before!" writes Isaacson. "It was less bombastic and more bluesy than the released version, and it clocked in at a full two minutes longer. I immediately took the needle off the record, and realized that we had something special." Columbia had rejected the album due to it's sexual and drug related themes, but the Velvet Underground went on to worldwide success, leaving its musical stamp on hundreds of other bands. How the LP got to the flea market is a mystery. But once Hill and Isaacson discovered what they had, they photographed the album and made a digital backup copy of the music. They also decided to put it up for auction through Saturn Records, of Oakland, California, which represented Hill for the 10-day eBay auction that began Nov. 28, with first online bids blazing to $20,000 (€15,000). Note: The first eBay auction went badly wrong - with the final $155,000 bid being a hoax. The album is now back in auction for a second time with pre-approved bidders.

THE SHADOWS - Rockin' With Curly Leads (1974)

If The Shadows were going for a more up to date yet highly nostalgic instrumental pop beat, they truly succeeded on RockinA With Curly Leads. Released after a three year layoff, following the death of long time Shadows bassist John Rostill, the first ever solo album by Shadows founder/guitarist Hank B. Marvin and the joining of bass guitarist John Farrar, the disc offers a great crossection of riff-heavy rock and soaring pop ballads as only the The Shadows could invent. True to their roots as EnglandAs greatest instrumental covers band, thereAs also covers of The Beach Boys 'Good Vibrations' and a rousing, set-opening 'Pinball Wizard'. JOE LYNN TURNER - Second Hand Life (2007)
VBR
After last years success with Sunstorm Joe Lynn Turner is back with a new solo album and the Sunstorm project must have given him strenght to do a more melodic soloalbum. Because this new album is really a melodic affair and it is a mixture of his previous solo album "The Usual Suspect", "Sunstorm" and "Deep Purple". A couple of the songs could have been on the Sunstorm album such as "Second Hand Life", "Love Is Life" and "Sweet Obsession"(Bonfire song). On this album he has worked with songwriters such as Jim Peterik(ex-Survivor, Pride Of Lions), Bob Held, Karl Cochran and Martin Briley, and he also manage to include a track that he co-wrote with Richie Blackmore, Jim Peterik and Roger Glover entitled "Stroke Of Midnight".

IRON BUTTERFLY - Light And Heavy: The Best Of Iron Butterfly (1993)
192
Psychedelic '60s hard rockers Iron Butterfly are nicely represented on this 21-track best-of, which gives full range to the band's dark, surging sound. Though not the most inventive or even the most ferocious of the acid-rock monsters, Iron Butterfly entered the history books with their 17-minute rock epic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," which subsequently became their best-known tune. The song is included here, of course, but in its edited "single version," and not in its full glory. That's not a major omission, however, as it leaves more room for listeners to sample Iron Butterfly's other work, much of which will be unknown to all but die-hard fans. The group dabbled in melodic pop, but they are infamous for their sludgy tempos and heavily distorted guitar attack, an aesthetic that would be resurrected some 25 years later in the grunge and stoner rock of the 1990s. In this way, LIGHT AND HEAVY should appeal to the up-and- coming headbanger as much as the nostalgia-seeking hippie.

CLIFF RICHARD - Cliff (1959)
160
Sir Cliff Richard (born Harry Rodger Webb, on 14 October, 1940) is a British singer. With his backing group The Shadows, he dominated the British popular music scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s, before and during the The Beatles' first year in the charts. A conversion to Christianity and subsequent softening of his music led to his having more of a pop than rock image. Although never able to achieve the same impact in the United States as in Britain (in spite of several chart hits there), Richard has remained a popular music, film, and television personality in the UK and also retains a following in several other countries. During the last six decades, Cliff Richard has charted many hit singles, and holds the record (along with Elvis Presley) as the only act to make the UK singles charts in all of its active decades (1950s–2000s). According to his website, he has sold 250 million records over the course of his career. In the British charts alone, Richard has had more than 150 singles, albums and EPs make the top 20.

B.B.KING & DIANE SCHUUR - Heart To Heart (1994)
160
B.B. King is more than just one of the greatest masters of electric blues guitar; he is also an extraordinarily gifted singer. His talents on his instrument are so great that they tend to eclipse his soulful and sophisticated singing voice, but any who might possibly have doubted his ability will do so no more upon hearing Heart to Heart. On this 1994 release, he joins pop-jazz balladeer Diane Schuur for ten surprising tracks.

WHITESNAKE - Lovehunter (1979)
320
Recorded back in 1979 “Lovehunter”, the album, was probably the first stepping-stone into making WHITESNAKE a major player in the field of Rock. It didn't break new ground but it gave them a sure footing from which to build their international success. Commercially, this album had its high and lows and starts off with one of the best love songs I think WHITESNAKE has ever penned, “Long Way From Home”, which kicks in, after two short snare beats, with the whole band in unison. This song isn't your regular album starter as it is a song about true love. It was released as a single (in the UK) and bombed brutally with lack of radio play and media support.

ROBERT PLANT
192
PICTURES AT ELEVEN, singer Robert Plant successfully began establishing himself as a solo recording artist apart from his former band, the incomparable Led Zeppelin. Plant wasted no time in issuing a follow-up, PRINCIPLE OF MOMENTS, which appeared one year after his debut. Following in the musical footsteps of its predecessor, PRINCIPLE shows Plant and his backing band (which included a cameo from Genesis drummer Phil Collins) exploring modern rock sounds. The two best known songs remain the hit singles/videos "Big Log" and "In the Mood," both, especially the former, slow - paced yet highly melodic compositions. Other standouts include the keyboard-infused "Thru With the Two Step," as well as such challenging numbers as "Wreckless Love" and "Messin' With the Mekon."

VBR
REO Speedwagon is an American rock band which grew in popularity in the Midwestern United States during the 1970s and peaked in the early 1980s. REO Speedwagon hits include "Keep On Loving You" and "Can't Fight This Feeling." THE ARCHIES - The Very Best Of (1976)
192
The Archies are a garage band founded by Archie Andrews, Reggie Mantle, and Jughead Jones, a group of adolescent fictional characters of the Archie universe, in the context of the animated TV series, The Archie Show. The Archies play a variety of contemporary popular music, consistent with the era in which the comic is drawn. They seem to have a preference for rock and roll, however. A set of studio musicians were assembled by Don Kirshner in 1968 to perform various songs. The most famous is "Sugar, Sugar", written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim, which went to #1 on the pop chart in 1969 and earned the group a gold record (in fact, in Billboard magazine's Hot 100, it was ranked as the number one song of that year, the only time a fictional band has ever claimed Billboard's annual Hot 100 top-spot). Other Top Forty songs recorded by The Archies include "Who's Your Baby?", "Bang-Shang-A-Lang", "Jingle Jangle" and "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy...".

EMMYLOU HARRIS - Singin' with Emmylou Vol. 1 (2000)
256
Although it is no secret that Emmylou Harris is one of the modern era's most prolific guest vocalists, it's only when you see her appearances laid out one after the other that you realize just how many other performers have called upon her over the years - a gamut that runs from Linda Ronstadt to Little Feat, from Bob Dylan to Bonnie Raitt. The first of two simultaneously released volumes that only begin to scrape the surface of Harris' catalog of duets, Singin' With Emmylou concentrates on her contemporary country contributions - and thus omits all of the above. Listeners do, however, encounter trysts with the likes of Willie Nelson, Dan Fogelberg, George Jones, and Lyle Lovett, while her scorching partnership with Gram Parsons is captured via a 1971 live recording. Lesser-known collaborations with the Pure Prairie League and actress Mary Kay Place, meanwhile, transport listeners back to 1975-1976, as Harris herself first began stepping into the public gaze, and provide this album with two of its hottest highlights; Jon Randall and Kathy Mattea then rate among the lesser-known names to bring the story into the 1990s. But, though not every performer has the greatest name recognition, the cohesion introduced by Harris' own presence ensures Singin' With Emmylou passes with barely a misplaced footstep.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - Devils & Dust (2005)
320
MY RIP!
The last time Bruce Springsteen ventured West for inspiration, the result was the desolate Nebraska and its tales of serial killers and used cars. On this record Springsteen navigates barren deserts and Old West war fields for a dozen forlorn songs that co-star the artist and his acoustic guitar. Though he's always had a knack for carving out the hooks and melodies that make each journey memorable, this time around Springsteen relies on the lyrics to carry the tune-desperate tales of tragedy, heartbreak, and lust with a Latino twist, like the boxer coming home ("The Hitter"), a distressing border-crossing incident ("Matamoros Banks"), and the Nevada hooker with good intentions ("Reno," which led to the warning sticker Adult Imagery). With no E Street Band in the mix, the lbum is decorated with horns and strings and Springsteen’s novel falsetto on two his best efforts: "Maria’s Bed," where the narrator comes home to his woman after 40 nights on the road, and the fast-picking "All I’m Thinkin’ About," where he has more than Carolina on his mind. A decade from now this will be an underrated record in the Springsteen chronicles.

LOS LONELY BOYS - Live at Blue Cat Blues (2006)
192
Prior to selling millions of records, touring with Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, and the Rolling Stones, and winning a Grammy for the hit single “Heaven”, the brotherly trio of Los Lonely Boys was just another bar band playing small stages across Texas hoping to someday get their “big break”. In late summer of 2000 the band secured its first ever show in Dallas at a “Stevie Ray Vaughan Birthday Jam” presented by Blue Cat Blues, a local venue. Kevin Wommack, the band’s manager called the venue to ask if they would take a chance (sight unseen and unheard) on three young brothers from West Texas – his heartfelt words, “I know you will love them” somehow struck a chord and, with a leap of faith, the boys were added to the show. The rest, as they say, is history. The boys’ jaw- dropping performance that evening was captured on Los Lonely Boys - Live at the Blue Cat Blues, a rare collection set for release on February 14, 2006. Recorded live in an intimate club setting, the CD exhibits the explosive energy of Henry Garza's guitar playing in contrast to the smooth harmonizing vocals of a young band of brothers primed and destined for success. The twelve-track disc contains nine previously unreleased songs, several off which, have since become staples of LLB’s live stage shows.

PATTI SMITH - Gung Ho (2000)
192
Patti Smith's fourth album since her 1988 comeback vehicle Dream of Life finds the plugged-in poetess looking outward after the extended period of introspection that followed the death of her husband, Fred "Sonic" Smith. The scathing eight-minute-plus "Strange Messengers" illustrates Smith's renewed interest in the world around her, as the streetwise New Yorker turned Midwestern suburbanite rails at crackheads ("That's how you repay your ancestors?"). Working with producer Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, Pixies) and fronting a quartet built around longtime lieutenants Lenny Kaye and Jay Dee Daugherty, Smith's music harkens back to the commercial apex of New Wave; indeed, "Gone Pie" sounds like the singer sitting in with Blondie. In fact, Gung Ho as a whole feels like the album the high-priestess of punk didn't make in the early '80s, a time when she was laying low and a number of artists inspired by her visionary early works were racking up MTV and modern-rock airtime. Gung Ho is somewhat muddled in execution, but then again, so are the times.

MACY GRAY - Big (2007)
VBR
Macy Gray is best known for her distinctive, raspy singing and flamboyant sense of style—and though there's no way to hide the peculiarities of her voice, she goes a long way toward minimizing her eccentricity on her fourth album, Big. This is not to say that her previous records were outrageously out-there, but they did crackle with a certain manic energy. They also benefitted from her willingness to experiment with the conventions of neo-soul as she played up a larger-than-life persona that owed an aesthetic debt to the freaky funk stars of the '70s. Yet Big is mainly comprised of amiable yet unmemorable R&B ballads that lack the unrestrained emotion and obvious hooks of her break-through hit "I Try," much less the unashamed yet mature sexuality that informed her highly underrated sophomore effort, The Id. Too much of the record settles into a mid-tempo haze that would be unremarkable if not for her vocal performance—but Gray's presence alone is not enough to elevate the mediocre songwriting.

V.A. - Just Because I'm a Woman: Songs of Dolly Parton (2003)
192
Despite her numerous accomplishments as a performer, actor, and all-around media mogul, Dolly Parton has often said that she views herself primarily as a songwriter. JUST BECAUSE I'M A WOMAN goes a long way towards highlighting the craft of Parton's extraordinary songs. Unlike some cash-in tribute albums, this disc showcases artists who clearly love and respect the music in question, making for a record that bears no trace of crass commercialism. Most tracks on the album strip the songs down to their bare essence, framing the tunes in a newgrass-like acoustic setting typical of many Sugar Hill Records releases. Notable exceptions are the two final, and most interesting, tracks. While Allison Moorer's take on "Light of a Clear Blue Morning" boasts a spooky, ethereal production that perfectly suits her husky voice, Me'Shell NdegeOcello completely deconstructs "Two Doors Down", turning a fairly straightforward 1980s pop song into a mysterious, funky, and brooding lament. Perhaps the album's best moment, though, is Joan Osborne's stunningly pure, straightforward version of "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind", which at once showcases the unaffected beauty of the singer's voice, and makes crystal clear why Dolly Parton truly deserves a tribute album.

Guitarist, songwriter and singer Andrew "Jr. Boy" Jones began working professionally at age 16 with Freddie King's backing band, the Thunderbirds. He got his first guitar from his uncle, jazz musician Adolphus Sneed. Jones cites an eclectic array of influences: Freddie King, Cornell Dupree and Larry Carlton. For many years, he's backed various Dallas-area vocalists on guitar, but in the mid-1990s, he came into his own as a vocalist with an album for JSP Records, I Need Time (1997), which showcases his crafty songwriting, great guitar playing, and powerful singing.
