PAUL RODGERS - Cut Loose (1983)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

"Cut Loose, Paul Rodgers' first record after leaving Bad Company, finds Paul playing every instrument. The thing of it is, he's pretty good at all of them. However, he's not great at any of them. As one would expect, though, the vocals are incredible. This album servers a a good mid-point between the Bad Co. material, and the later Firm material. The second Firm album, Mean Business, actually contains one of the best tracks off this album, Live In Peace. Overall a good album, but Paul would prove to be capable of much more..."

LEON RUSSELL - Carney (1972)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Leon Russell was at one time a session musician and producer for LIBERTY records-- he played keyboards on several Gary Lewis and the Playboys sides! Laboring in obscurity through the 1960s, Russell's career really took off in 1971, with an appearance in the film JOE COCKER: MAD DOGS & ENGLISHMEN. Hot on the heels of that concert movie, Russell performed at George Harrison's CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH Madison Square Garden benefit. CARNEY was released soon after. CARNEY is a brilliant album, and a genuine highlight of 1972. It opens with the Top 40 hit "Tight Rope," and offers up one great song after another. Only the brief title track and the silly "Acid Annapolis" could be considered superfluous here. Personal favorites include "If The Shoe Fits," a cutting commentary on the annoying folks who importune rock performers wherever they go, "Manhattan Island Serenade," a poignant song that opens and closes with a rainswept highway, a broken van, and a broken heart, and "This Masquerade," which has some of the most touchingly true lyrics ever written. If you're a fan of late '60s or early '70s rock music, and you've never heard CARNEY, you owe it to yourself to get this one. And if you once had the record 35 years ago, you really do need this CD! Highest recommendation.

JIM CROCE - Bad Boy Leroy Brown - The Definitive Collection (1998)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Jim Croce was born in early 1943 in a working-class section of Philadelphia in an Italian-American family. While in his teens, he began playing the accordion, and then learning to play an acoustic guitar when he was 18. After a short stint in the U.S. Army, where he supposedly met the character who inspired the song "Bad Bad Leroy Brown," Jim entered Villanova University for a degree in psychology, but he spent a lot of time working with bands, playing music and performing solo. After graduation, Jim worked as a construction worker where after an accident, he then worked as a teacher in a junior high school in South Philadelphia. In 1966, Jim married his wife Ingrid and the following year they moved to New York City where as a folk duo performed in city nightclubs and coffeehouses and tried to record an album. Jim and his wife moved back to Pennsylvania where they bought a farmhouse and their first son, Adrian, was born in 1970 while Jim worked as a truck driver to pay the bills. A year later, one of Jim's former college friends encouraged him to record some of his newer songs and send them to ABC Records where they signed Jim up and his first album "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" was released in 1972 and was one of the top 20 sellers in the USA. From 1972 to 1973, Jim Croce performed in more than 250 concerts, appeared as a guest on numerous TV programs and recored his second album in mid 1973 titled "Life and Times." Jim Croce's career came to a sudden end when he and his musical partner Maury Muehlelsen and others boarded a private airplane in Louisiana to travel to a gig in Texas when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff killing everyone on board. His posthumous album includes the songs "I Got a Name," "Time in a Bottle" and "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" which were posthumous hits. In the lyrics to the hauntingly wistful "Time in a Bottle", Jim left his own best epitaph as if he was foreseeing his own death: "There never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them."

Otis Taylor, the Denver-based guitarist and vocalist, has a well-earned reputation for creating a distinctive, dark style of blues. VAN MORRISON - Blowin' Your Mind! (1967)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192
Van Morrison's first solo album

After a young Van Morrison left his Belfast R&B-pop band Them following a couple of U.K. hits in "Gloria" and "Here Comes the Night," American producer-songwriter Bert Berns brought him to New York for 48 hours in early 1967 to record the tracks that would become Blowin' Your Mind! Berns died shortly thereafter, but the tracks he cut included the song that launched Morrison's solo career--the U.S. top 10 hit "Brown Eyed Girl." Most of these songs have been released on early Morrison compilations, including some on this same label. But this is the original album (plus alternate takes) in its original format with the great psychedelic artwork, and it contains some youthful vocal magic on the soul standard "He Ain't Give You None," the stark and graphic "TB Sheets," and the strange and wonderful "Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye)." This was undoubtedly Morrison's first period of transition. After the release of Blowin' Your Mind! he moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to work on his next album, the landmark Astral Weeks.

RUSH - Signals (1982)

Rush:
Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizer, bass);
Alex Lifeson (guitar);
Neal Peart (drums, percussion)

Making the transition from the heavy-rocking '70s to the synthesizer - driven '80s, the power trio Rush embraced the new technology with open arms. After the 1981 smash album MOVING PICTURES, Rush decided to lead their cult of loyal fans down a slightly different musical route while continuing to maintain their high level of expertise. The result, SIGNALS, was a very unique album for the group and ushered in an era that focused their sound toward keyboard - centered orchestrations and tight, stylized arrangements.

SCOTT WALKER - Til The Band Comes In (1970)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

The 1990s' rediscovery of Scott Walker, hitherto the Pop Star That Time Forgot, was one of the most gratifying events of the mid 1990s. No man blessed with a voice like that, taste like that, talent like that, should ever have been consigned to the creaky oblivion of oldies radio. But one needs to tread carefully when plunging into the cult. Even at his best, and particularly at his most recent, Walker can be an excruciatingly difficult taste to acquire. Move into the early 1970s mid-point of his output, and oftentimes, it's simply excruciating...

BRYAN FERRY - Dylanesque (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

The Roxy Music front man is a longtime fan of the great man Dylan having first recorded a swaggering version of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” in 1973. Ferry says recording the new album has always been an ambition, saying, "I just thought it would be great to make a whole album of Dylan songs. And at the end of last year, finally, it happened." ‘Dylanesque’ features eleven Dylan songs, recorded in just one week in the studio with his full touring band backing him. Ferry says, "I wanted to get away from that locked-in-the-studio feeling. We were doing live vocals, harmonica, live everything." Ferry has changed the moods and temper of the songs, protest song ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’ is no longer just that. Ferry tells us "The way I do it doesn't mean it isn't a protest song… this song can be whatever you want it to be. I grew up with the jazz idea that you could do a song in many different ways." Other tracks Ferry has tackled include, 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues,' 'Simple Twist of Fate,' ‘All I Really Want To Do’ and ‘Positively 4th Street.’ Guest musicians also appear on the covers album – Brian Eno provides "sonic enhancements" on ‘If Not For You’ and The Dirty Three’s Warren Ellis brings a string arrangement to ‘Positively 4th Street.’ Ferry also tackles ‘Knocking On Heaven's Door’ admitting that “[it] was a risky one, because it's been covered so many times by different people. With All Along The Watchtower there was a nod to Hendrix as well as Dylan. The backing track was done about eight years ago, just an acoustic guitar played by Robin Trower, bass, drums and me. I kept looking at it and thinking, one day I've got to finish that..."

LUCINDA WILLIAMS - Live @ The Fillmore (2005)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams is releasing her first live album titled Live @ The Fillmore. It was recorded at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco CA in early 2004. The double album includes such favorites as "Joy", "I Lost It", "Essence" and "Blue", but Williams digs even deeper into her past with gritty versions of "Pineola" and "Changed The Locks". Other songs featured are from the highly-acclaimed, Grammy-Nominated 2003 release World Without Tears. Live @ The Fillmore features one of the best bands on the road today, with guitarist, pedal steel and background vocalist Doug Pettibone, anchored by Taras Prodaniuk on bass and Jim Christie on drums and percussion. Their performances of Williams' songs are an extraordinary balance of aggression and finesse that perfectly complement Williams' unique vocal style and songwriting.

PATTY GRIFFIN - Children Running Through (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Patty Griffin already has reached the "Top of the World" as a songwriter. The Dixie Chicks covered that song and the biting "Truth No. 2," and soul giant Solomon Burke recorded her "Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)," heard here in Griffin's own, deeply moving version. Griffin's vocals, however, at times seemed too wispy for her own good, a problem not found on the marvelous "Children Running Through." She imparts a gospel charge to the simply elegant "Heavenly Day" -- "Tomorrow may rain with sorrow/Here's a little time we can borrow" -- and a jolt of old (Stax/Volt) soul to "Stay on the Ride," another "Top"- notch portrait of an old soul.

ROBIN TROWER - Bridge of Sighs (1974)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Guitarist Robin Trower admits to drawing his inspiration from Jimi Hendrix, and has the arsenal of licks, tricks and tunes to prove it. He has also assembled a balanced band to accompany his solo flights: Bassist James Dewar is a proficient soul-styled singer capable of admirably filling vocal chores without detracting from the guitarist's show. Trower's own tone is meaty, his hand sure: In coherence and flash, his solos bear comparison with his mentor's.

A truly incredible and underestimated guitarist.

MOUNTAIN - The Best Of (1973)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Mountain's meteoric ride through the early '70s was as memorable as it was brief - so much so that this excellent greatest-hits set was released less than four years after the band had inaugurated their career at Woodstock. In retrospect, its easy to understand why the strange chemistry (pun intended) struck between boogie-loving, Clapton-worshiping guitar hero Leslie West and eclectic bassist and Cream producer Felix Pappalardi was fated to be a short one. But during their brief run, Mountain's adventurous proto-metal did indeed resemble a somewhat twisted but effective American version of the legendary power trio that inspired them. Of course, Mountain would continue to re-form off and on over the years, but seeing as most of their later efforts were disappointingly under par, this set covers all the stuff you'll need - most essentially, Homer Simpson's favorite song, the immortal "Mississippi Queen."

THE KINKS - Everybody's In Showbiz (1972)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

This 1972 double-album is one of the last from the Kinks period that began with ARTHUR--after they abandoned the quaintness of '60s pop, but before they surrendered to the bombast of '70s rock. On the first, studio-recorded half, the Kinks exude a sense of loose, ragged fun. While tracks such as "Unreal Reality" betray Ray Davies's well-known leanings towards cynicism, others such as "Supersonic Rocket Ship" (a hit in England) and the moving "Celluloid Heroes" recall the sweetness that marked classics of his such as "Waterloo Sunset." The second half of the album, taped at a March 1972 performance at Carnegie Hall, is a fine reminder of a time when the live Kinks really seemed to be enjoying themselves on stage. Ray Davies in particular seems to be in fine form, joking with the audience through a stage persona that draws heavily on the tradition of English music hall entertainers. Davies manages to be both satirical and highly entertaining, a combination that informs the album's theme of weariness and cynicism about the life of a rock star. Though EVERYBODY'S IN SHOWBIZ doesn't rank with the Kinks' best work, it is a fine demonstration of their fun live shows, and their irrepressible spirit.

NICO - Chelsea Girl (1967)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

In 1966, The Velvet Underground recorded their first studio album, Velvet Underground And Nico. Although most of the tracks on that album featured Lou Reed singing, a few of them featured Nico. When the band enlisted Andy Warhol's management, Nico (who Warhol obviously quite liked) joined the band. However, after releasing the first album in 1967, the band dropped Warhol's management, and along with him Nico left the band. Fortunately, this wasn't going to be the end of Nico's musical career. Following her departure from the Velvets, she recorded her first solo album, Chelsea Girl. It was released in 1967, less than a year after the Velvet Underground album she sang a few tracks on.

CROSBY, STILLS & NASH - Crosby, Stills & Nash (1969)

MY RIP

As much as any record, CSN's 1969 debut ushered in the early '70s singer-songwriter boom. Yes, this was a group, but it was one made up of three coequal composer/vocalists, each with a heady resume - Crosby an ex - Byrd, Stills in Buffalo Springfield, and Nash a former member of the Hollies. Each supplied distinctive material and contributed to CSN's trademark harmonies. The addition of Neil Young made the supergroup an edgier outfit. There's a purity to the original trio recording, however, that would never be recaptured.

THE TRAVELING WILBURYS - Vol.1 (1988)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
MY RIP

This album is brilliant! This was definitely one of the most exciting music projects to come out of the '80s. There had been "super-groups" before, like the Yardbirds or Blind Faith, but it was unprecedented to have FIVE well-established rock 'n roll greats (Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty) form their own band and bring out two records, and it was a trans-Atlantic collaboration. The story goes that ex-ELO maestro Jeff was helping produce new albums by George and the others, when they decided, "Hey, why not try to bring out a whole album together?!"Part of the beauty of Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 is that it is so under-stated. It's not like the five guys were saying, "Look at us, we're a super-group!" No, they got pure enjoyment from their collaboration, appearing almost mysteriously as five "Wilbury" brothers...

STEVE HACKETT - Highly Strung (1982)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 224

Steve Hackett's last release for Charisma Records in Britain is one of his strongest efforts. Hackett once again handles all the lead vocals, but sounds more assured in the role than he did on Cured. This album spawned Hackett's one and only solo hit single, "Cell 151," which charted in Britain. (An extended version of "Cell 151" was released as a 12" single, and was later included on CD versions of Highly Strung.) With its heavily gated drum sound (an effect pioneered by Hackett's onetime bandmate Phil Collins), "Cell 151" had a hard-hitting, modern sound. This production style ran through the whole album, but complemented Hackett's songs to great effect. Strong up-tempo numbers like "Walking Through Walls" (which espoused the virtues of pushing your boundaries via a daily morning jog) alternated with ballads like "India Rubber Man," on which the guitarist returned to his first instrument, the harmonica. Highly Strung is a fine example of Hackett's skills as an instrumentalist and composer.

BILLY IDOL - VH1 Storytellers (2002)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
DVD >>> DVD Audio Extractor >>> mp3/HQ

Personnel:
Billy Idol (vocals);
Steve Stevens (acoustic & electric guitars); thumbup
Joseph Simon (piano, Hammond B3 organ);
Steve McGrath (bass, background vocals);
Mark Shulman (drums, background vocals);
Greg Ellis (percussion);
Stella Soleil (background vocals) kiss

While it might seem incongruous for a rock & roll rebel like Billy Idol to perform on an ostensibly introspective songwriters show like VH1's STORYTELLERS, he pulls it off with the same adaptability that allowed him to move from punk upstart to pop star to rock veteran with such seamlessness. In all honesty, it's rather a kick to hear the familiar moody guitar intro from "White Wedding" played on acoustic guitar, especially knowing that it's longtime Idol cohort Steve Stevens doing the picking. Surprisingly, Idol's wildman bellow modulates quite well to a lower dynamic on this song and such others as "Flesh For Fantasy" and the R&B cover tune "To be a Lover." The all-acoustic format doesn't stop Idol and his stripped-down band from rocking out on "Cradle of Love" and the Generation X (his old punk band) staples like "Ready Steady Go." What's more, the STORYTELLERS setup seems tailor-made for tackling one of the aforementioned band's finest tunes "Kiss Me Deadly, " which seemed out of place amid the roar of late-'70s punk but is flattered by it's treatment here.

RY COODER - Chicken Skin Music (1976)

This 1976 effort contains some of Cooder's most compelling work and finds him reexploring some of the fundamental influences on a musician known for remarkable eclecticism. Most notable are "Always Lift Him Up," "Smack Dab in the Middle," and a beautiful adaptation of "Stand By Me" (which includes Flaco Jimenez on accordion.) The album opens and closes with covers of Leadbelly, namely "The Bourgeois Blues" and (you guessed it) "Goodnight Irene." Also notable is a fine reworking of the traditional number "I Got Mine."

Taking their name from the "Eloi", the futuristic race of people in H.G. Wells' The Time Machine, ELOY was initially formed in 1969 in Germany. Inspired by THE SHADOWS and THE BEATLES, they became one of the major bands in the progressive rock scene highly influenced by the space rock of PINK FLOYD. They started off in Germany as a hard rock band with a political bent, but soon drifted into a spacier progressive rock sound. They have had a number of turnovers, with a major split in the 1980s that resulted in a move into more of a mainstream direction. Based mainly on founder Frank BORNEMANN's guitar solos, their music evolved to include more synthesizers and choirs. They produced many albums between 1971 and 1998 with different line-ups. Their best period is the mid to late-70's with the trippier space-rock of "Inside" and "Floating" (with Manfred WIECZORKE later of JANE). "Dawn" is actually one of the better of the symphonic-era ELOY albums, perhaps even the best. "Ocean" is a concept album about Atlantis, and one of the pillar albums of the German symphonic scene, and certainly worth checking out. They followed up with "Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes", the year later to even greater success. During 1993-1994, ELOY released three best of collections and it wasn't until 1994 with the release of "The Tides Return Forever", that they recorded and toured again is released and the band reappeared live on stage for several successful shows in Germany. Their last album "Ocean 2", released in 1998, was a surprising come back of a progressive rock band, which stopped recently their stage-appearances.

SMOKEY WILSON - The Man From Mars (1997)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Smokey Wilson may be based in Southern California, but the music on The Man From Mars sounds as though it was perfected at an interstate rest stop mid-way between the Mississippi Delta and Chicago, jamming with musicians traveling to and from those two blues meccas. His guitar playing is stinging, and electric...very electric, his vocals are raw & coarse, and both are meant to be heard loud. Smokey's lyrics are uncomplicated and direct, emphasizing the simple pain and pleasure of life.

DAVE MATTHEWS BAND - Stand Up (2005)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

When the members of the Dave Matthews Band commenced recording STAND UP, they did so with the express intent of creating an album markedly different from their past efforts. To this end, they hired R&B/hip-hop producer Mark Batson (Eminem, India Arie) and started down a path of experimentation that re-defined the group's creative process. Whether on the loop-like electric mandolin lines on "American Baby," the spooky, slowed-down vocal on "Stand Up (For It)," or the psychedelic echo effect on the chorus of "Everybody Wake Up (Our Finest Hour Arrives)," artistic freedom is in the air here, and the musicians sound like they're having the time of their lives. Even Matthews's idiosyncratic vocals are looser and friendlier, and his lyrics seem more in sync with the music. In fact, the album's overall sense of liberation and quirkiness lends it a sound reminiscent of Mitchell Froom's work on Los Lobos' landmark KIKO. Of course, longtime fans of the Dave Matthews Band will find all of their favorite elements here, including syncopated, world-music-inspired grooves, jaw-dropping drum chops, a few extended jams, and the dark, immediately identifiable singing of Matthews himself.

DR. JOHN - N'Awlinz: Dis Dat Or D'Udda (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

"Mac Rebennack took his stage name from the voodoo healer Dr. John and became a '70s pop star by recasting New Orleans's myth and music in his own psychedelic image. At 63, he's again revamped the Crescent City sound, minus the acid-trip trappings, for his best album in decades. With its string, horn, and Afro-Latin percussion sections and its slate of re-imagined classics, N'Awlinz is a masterful summation of Dr. John's abilities as a leader and performer. Guests such as Willie Nelson, B.B. King, and Mavis Staples, plus a roster of Louisiana luminaries including Randy Newman, Nicholas Payton, Snooks Eaglin, Gatemouth Brown, Dave Bartholomew, and Earl Palmer, all make winning contributions. In Dr. John's grasp, "When the Saints Come Marching In" becomes a stately waltz that twines his elegant piano and gravel throat with Staples's rich, red-clay gospel singing. And he honors the spirit of standards like "Stackalee" and "St. James Infirmary" while spinning his own lyrics and melodies into them. "Time Marches On" (with King, Nelson, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band), "Life is a One Way Ticket," and several spirituals contemplate mortality, but never interrupt the graceful, upbeat flow of this late-career opus. Featuring special guests Mavis Staples, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Cyril Neville, Randy Newman, Willie Nelson, B.B. King and others."

JERRY GARCIA BAND - How Sweet It Is (1997)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

How Sweet It Is is the long-awaited follow-up to the two-disc Jerry Garcia Band set that was released in 1991. Culled from the same period of live performances, this effort delivers ten more songs that explore the magical relationship between Jerry Garcia, bassist John Kahn, and keyboardist Melvin Seals. The disc opens with a solid version of the title track that forever will be engrained in Deadhead's minds as the song that opened his October 31, 1992 concert, thereby marking Garcia's first public appearance following the collapse of his health. That's What Love Will Make You Do finds Garcia's fluid leads drifting above the punctuated rhythmic pulses of Kahn's bass, the keyboards of Melvin Seals, and the jazzy drumming of David Kemper. How Sweet It Is concludes with a beautiful rendition of Like a Road that highlights Garcia's heartfelt, gospel-tinged vocals, a soulful solo from Seals, and Kahn's floating bass line.

BLIND FAITH - Blind Faith (1969)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

"The short-lived classic-rock supergroup Blind Faith's sole album has aged remarkably well. In 1969, Blind Faith fused the psychedelic blues of Eric Clapton and the soulful vocals and keyboards of Steve Winwood with the polyrhythmic, Afrocentric leanings of drummer Ginger Baker. "Can't Find My Way Home" is one of the hippie era's most lyrically poignant, sonically subtle tunes. The record has a lot of surprises; "Presence of the Lord" is rousing and melancholy at the same time, while the way the bass and guitar double-team on the introductory melodic line to "Had to Cry Today" makes a hard-rock cliché fresh again. The 10-minute drum solo on "Do What You Like" is pretty good as 10-minute drum solos go. This 2000 reissue of the album omits the unreleased jams and mixes that fill the second disc of the deluxe reissue that appeared earlier in the year."

ELLIOTT MURPHY - Coming home again (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

He tours France, Spain, Italy, Germany and Scandinavia when he's not writing. He's had collections of short stories and a novel published in Europe during the last couple of years. He's realesed well over a dozen of the most passionate, literate, intelligent rock albums of our times. Sidemen on his albums have included members of The Violent Femmes, The Smithereens, The Talking Heads, The Velvet Underground, neo-folkie Shawn Colvin and even AOR warhorses like Phil collins and Billy Joel. During his last European tour, when Bruce Springsteen played Paris, Elliott Murphy was the artist he asked to join him on sage, where the two performed an acoustic version of Murphy's signature song "Rock Ballad". He made endless, slogging rock and roll tours and played in stripper joints.

His name is Elliott James Murphy and his is one of the more remarkable stories in modern rock'n roll.

In this impressive collection of 13 new songs Murphy tips his hat to cultural icons as diverse as Hemingway and Paris Hilton and exotic locales from India to Veracruz although the music and words belongs to that mythical place his fans now call Murphyland.

RY COODER - My Name Is Buddy (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

On My Name Is Buddy, Ry Cooder revisits, in a new set of original material, the sound and feeling of the "dust bowl songs" he first explored more than three decades ago on such groundbreaking albums as his self-titled 1970 debut and 1971's In The Purple Valley. In fact, he's joined by old friends like pianist Van Dyke Parks and drummer Jim Keltner who were with him at the start of his extraordinary, ultimately globe-spanning musical odyssey, which has yielded him six Grammy Awards to date, several more nominations, and perennial acclaim. My Name Is Buddy is also a journey, a phantasmagorical rendering in music, words and pictures of the travels of three unlikely cohorts - Buddy Red Cat, Lefty Mouse and Reverend Tom Toad - as they meander through the west "in the days of labor, big bosses, farm failures, strikes, company cops, sundown towns, hobos and trains...the America of yesteryear." For this allegorical tale, Cooder marshals all his remarkable skills as a producer, arranger, songwriter, soundtrack composer and musicologist. (The Christian Science Monitor recently dubbed him "a modern-day Alan Lomax.") My Name Is Buddy recalls Woody Guthrie's Bound for Glory - that is, if it had been enacted by the articulate animal characters of Walt Kelly's classic comic Pogo. Cooder conjures up the dark shadows of an earlier time to wryly comment on the political and social issues of the present. As back-story to his songs, Cooder has written short stories for each one and they're accompanied by evocative illustrations from noted San Antonio-based painter and muralist Vincent Valdez, all of which are included in a specially designed package.

LUCINDA WILLIAMS - West (2007)

5 STARS 5 STARS 5 STARS 5 STARS 5 STARS 5 STARS 5 STARS

After the death of her mother and the implosion of a 'tumultuous' relationship, the country-rock queen sounds more world-weary than ever. She deals with her losses most movingly on the lower-key numbers 'Fancy Funeral', 'Mama You Sweet', and 'Everything Has Changed'. Set to big guitars and thumping drums, her trademark drawl and cracked vocals can sound mannered, though it's hard to begrudge her the bitter howl of 'Come On' (as in 'You didn't even make me ... come on'). Often harrowing, although Williams's emotional odyssey finds resolution on the title track.

PHIL GUY - Say What You Mean (2000)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The Guy songs are more typical of the Chicago blues style, whilst the others reflect more of a Memphis sound that encompasses both blues (especially) Albert King and soul. Guy takes both in his stride, however, and the switch is comparatively seamless. One minor criticism, however, is that in one or two places the songs betray too influence on the part of the writers/producers in giving the band a sound that is too close to that employed on the George Stancell album (which was produced and mostly written by the Rawls/Feiner combination). "Say What You Mean" is a very good album, which sounds best played loud. Anyone with a preference for Chicago style blues with a bit of soul on the side will love it. Guy is a talented individual who is always willing to take new ideas on board, without compromising his standards. "Say What You Mean" reflects this, and may just turn out to be the album that Guy needs to really help him break through into the major league.

JOHN LEE HOOKER - The Best of Friends (1998)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

"The premise behind this compilation is somewhat unusual: classic tracks, yes, but classic tracks recorded by John Lee Hooker... and friends. Charles Brown, Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, Los Lobos, and Bonnie Raitt are only some of the performers who appear here, and the tracks, selected from recordings made by the prolific guitarist since 1988, show that Hooker hasn't lost his touch. Among the highlights, there's a smokin' duet with Raitt on "I'm in the Mood," a rendition of "Boom Boom" with a guest appearance from Jimmie Vaughan, and a reprise of Hooker's 1956 hit "Dimples" with Los Lobos backing up. Mention must also be made of the lone solo track on this CD, the acoustic "Tupelo," which hearkens to Hooker's Delta blues roots. There are also three previously unreleased tracks, which are probably the real reason to get this compilation."

DEBBIE DAVIS - Key To Love: A Celebration Of The Music Of John Mayall (2003)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

"A tribute to British blues master John Mayall by a modern electric American blues performer like Debbie Davies makes perfect sense. For better or (sadly more often) worse, singer and keyboardist Mayall and his succession of lead guitarists led by future UK blues-rock superstars Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones) and Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac) have profoundly influenced generations of American blues- rockers far more than homegrown stars like Muddy Waters or Howlin' Wolf. Debbie Davies' rather watered - down blues-rock style is a perfect example of Mayall's influence, and actually, Key To Love turns out to be one of her most enjoyable and genuinely bluesy efforts. Things start promisingly with the sly Mose Allison-like piano shuffle "Light the Fuse," and both Green and Taylor drop in to provide guest solos; Green's plangent wails on the organ-driven "Nature's Disappearing" are probably the best playing on the entire album. In the context of a fine selection of some of Mayall's best (and, refreshingly, mostly not his best-known) tunes, the two Davies originals, the snide "Takin' It All to Vegas" and the clichéd "I Just Came To Play," sound like unnecessary afterthoughts."

KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD - 10 Days Out (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
5 STAR ALBUM (for me, of course)

The fifth album from this hotshot guitarist sounds like a blues record certain frat boys could crank on a front porch, balancing old-school twelve-bar material with more commercial fare and a big, meaty rock attack. Shepherd gets some big cameos -- including B.B. King on a horn-driven cover of "The Thrill Is Gone" -- and on roadhouse stuff like "Chapel Hill Boogie," Shepherd drops hot licks without crowding out his frontmen.

MUDDY WATERS & FRIENDS - Goin' Way Back (1997)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

11 tracks, 44 mins, highly recommended A pleasant surprise this one! Muddy & his band members recorded at their hotel in Montreal, Canada in 1967. But instead of the familiar group setting with overly familiar songs we get a series of acoustic performances. Muddy does five songs with Sammy Lawhorn on second guitar and, on one track, "Mojo" Buford on harmonica. Muddy reaches back to his first Aristocrat session and does fine versions of Gypsy Woman and Little Annie Mae and brings out his trusty slide for My Home Is On The Delta and Mean Disposition. Luther "Georgia Snake Boy" Johnson does 4 excellent sides and, surprise, surprise Otis Spann picks up the guitar and does two songs. Sound quality is unexceptional but not uncomfortable. Definitely worth checking out.

WILLIE DIXON - I Am The Blues (1970)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Originally released in 1970, this disc has the legendary songwriter singing nine of his classics as his hand-picked Chicago band makes the changes. Dixon's nothing special, even if he is the blues personified, since his dryly charming voice lacks tonal inflections and his way with rhythm is less than fluent. Whatever glimmers of expressivity these performances have are due to harp player Carey Bell. In spite of Mobile Fidelity's exemplary sound technology, the instruments at the original session sound like mysterious things thumping on the roof in the dead of night.

KATHY MATTEA - Roses (2002)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

"West Virginia-born singer Kathy Mattea, best known for hits like "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses" and "Where've You Been," has often set her musical sights higher than the sort of cliché - ridden romantic fodder for moonstruck teens and self - absorbed twenty somethings that's so typical with contemporary country radio fare. On Roses, her first release on the small Narada label, Mattea digs even deeper, while often giving free rein to her enduring penchants for Celtic influences and New Age philosophizing. Here she grapples with "grown - up" issues like grief and loss ("Till I Turn to You" and "Ashes in the Wind," written by her husband Jon Vezner) and the human potential for placing love and forgiveness above hate and retaliation ("Guns of Love" and Allen Shamblin and Beth Nielsen Chapman's "Who We Are"). Now and again Mattea lightens up a bit with mid- and uptempo gems like the contemporary gospel parable "That's All the Lumber You Sent" and a beautiful cover of Kim Richey's lilting "I'm Alright."
