McAULEY SCHENKER GROUP - M.S.G (1992)
VBR
The McAuley-Schenker Group changed personnel and slightly adjusted their name for 1991's MSG. Guitarist Michael Schenker and vocalist Robin McAuley created the dual monikers Schenker McAuley and MSG and recruited Dokken bass guitarist Jeff Pilson and Kingdom Come drummer James Kottak. "Anytime" served as the one killer track among average and below-average songs on 1989's Save Yourself, and MSG follows a similar path. "When I'm Gone" is a classy power ballad with a memorable chorus and tasteful guitar and keyboard work; it wasn't even a modest success like "Anytime," but it deserved to be. "Eve" has a cool hard rock groove and some clever lyrics. Schenker's superb guitar work dominates "This Broken Heart." The clean arrangement and production of "What Happens to Me" allow the vocals and guitars to jump out. "Never Ending Nightmare" has a weird, spooky ambience with layers of acoustic guitar and keyboards before swelling to an explosive finale.

STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN - The Sky Is Crying (1991)
VBR
Released after Vaughan's death in a 1990 helicopter accident, The Sky Is Crying collects unreleased studio tracks from throughout the guitarist's recorded career. In Vaughan's early years, he was a stylist who thought nothing of using ten notes when three would have worked. Rock stardom, cocaine, and alcohol did little to temper his tendency towards overstatement, but by In Step, his last studio album (and first clean-and-sober effort), he'd begun to transcend his many influences to forge a hard-boiled style of his own. The collection documents this passage, starting with unreleased covers of Lonnie Mack's "Wham" and Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" from the time of his debut album. "The Sky Is Crying" was originally cut by Elmore James, but Vaughan's lead guitar owes its stylistic debt to the bluesman who had a most profound influence on his playing, Albert King. The highlights are two tracks cut at the time of In Step--the hard-edged "Boot Hill," with Vaughan on slide guitar, and "Life by the Drop," in which Vaughan accompanies himself on acoustic guitar and toasts a life that would end far too soon.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD - Family (2006)
VBR
Additional personnel include: Rossington Collins Band, .38 Special, Johnny Van Zant Band. This 16-track compilation brings together an assortment of Lynyrd Skynyrd's most popular tracks and songs by various off-shoots of the band. The collection's first five songs are the rock behemoth's best known, with "Sweet Home Alabama," "Gimme Three Steps," and "Freebird" faithfully represented. The remainder of the set features work by .38 Special, Van Zant, and the Rossington Collins Band, among others. Each of these groups was like a smaller planet orbiting around the central sun of Skynyrd, and each proffers the same guitar-fueled Southern boogie rock. A nice mix of hits and lesser-known material, FAMILY is a fine introduction to a towering Southern rock dynasty.

BLUE ÖYSTER CULT - Super Hits (1998)
VBR
Blue Öyster Cult is a renowned hard rock band, probably best known for two songs: their 1976 single "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" from the album Agents of Fortune (also featured in the cult movie Halloween, and in Stephen King's novel The Stand), and their 1981 single "Burnin' for You" from the album Fire of Unknown Origin. Their song "Veteran of the Psychic Wars," with lyrics penned by Michael Moorcock, appeared in the soundtrack of the movie Heavy Metal. Two other well-known songs are "Godzilla" (1977) from Spectres, and "Astronomy" (1973) from Secret Treaties; the latter was covered by Metallica on 1998's Garage Inc. If you liked all of BOC's popular songs this is the disc for you. It doesn't dig deep into their career, but it has all the hits such as "Don't Fear the Reaper" (which thank goodness, is the full version with the guitar solo) and "Burning for You."

DAMIAN "Jr. Gong" MARLEY - Welcome To Jamrock (2005)
VBR
Grammy winner (for 2001's Halfway Tree) Damian "Junior Gong" Marley, the youngest singing son of the immortal Bob and brother of Ziggy, Julian, Stephen and Ky-mani, has made a major splash in the family business. The confrontational title track of his third album (which entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at Number 7, the biggest opening week ever for a reggae artist), deals with vacationing "haves" partying on the backs of increasingly desperate "have-nots." It has fomented a storm of protest from corporate entities who claim that Marley has presented his homeland (or more accurately, their interests) in a negative light. Another high point is "Pimpa's Paradise," a heartbreaker about drugs leading to prostitution, backed by a vulnerable-sounding acoustic guitar. Produced by Damian and Stephen Marley, it's an eclectic, sophisticated mix, constructed over treacherous rhythmic undercurrents, illuminated by empathy, courage and soul. A shifting kaleidoscope of classic and cutting-edge Jamaican grooves spars with R&B and hip-hop, references to Marcus Garvey, Eek-A-Mouse, and Exodus, plus guest stints from Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Bobby Brown, Black Thought and Nas.

FLEETWOOD MAC - The Dance (1997)
VBR
Fleetwood Mac's 1997 reunion could have been the kind of event that works on video - great concert, after all - but ends up not paying off in repeated listenings on CD. But The Dance, while concentrating on the group's '70s and '80s triumphs, finds the Mac energy running high and impassioned. New songs like "Temporary One" and "Bleed to Love Her" are fine additions to the canon, while "Everywhere" and "Say You Love Me" both breeze along the way you remember them and manage a reinvention in the live setting. The dark side of the vision is accounted for with Lindsey Buckingham's crazed solo "Big Love," but best of all is "Silver Springs," wherein Stevie Nicks tears the roof off the sucker and sets fire to the rubble.

They've been widely successful, frequently controversial and extremely influential. They're one of the most celebrated American hard-rock bands of all-time, and they've constantly forged forward with new sounds, new looks and new attitudes. They are a band that defines both musicianship and showmanship. A band that - despite being equally known for its well-chronicled escapades of sex, drugs, booze, fast cars, big stage shows, flashy videos and starlet wives and girlfriends - has always been centered first and foremost around the grinding sounds of rock 'n' roll.

GRATEFUL DEAD - Fallout From The Phil Zone (1997)
VBR
"Fallout From The Phil Zone" is a two-disc collection of live tracks compiled by Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, primarily from the late 1960s and early 1970s. While the Grateful Dead may have always claimed to be a band of musical equals--a truth in theory only - Deadheads regard bassist Phil Lesh as the second biggest cat in the jungle. After all, within the band's hierarchy of improvisers, only guitarist Jerry Garcia could affect the music's path with more vigor, confidence and psychological power. Lesh's hippie-jazz anything-goes spirit, such a large component of his playing, can also be spotted on this collection of live Dead nuggets compiled by the bassist, and spanning the band's thirty-year existence. What you get is an extended sonic assault (a feedback-laden "Viola Lee Blues") coexisting with an electric R&B romp (Pigpen & Garcia roaring through Otis Redding's "Hard To Handle"), and timeless Dead garage-noodling (a half-hour's worth of "Midnight Hour" from the same 1967 show whose own "Viola Lee Blues" bore the first seeds of "Dark Star") beside mournful Garcia readings of folk songs old (the traditional "Jack A Roe") and new (Dylan's "Visions of Johanna"). PHIL ZONE sounds like Lesh's own family album of recordings, attempting to show the entire clan on two discs.

MOODY BLUES - In Search Of The Lost Chord (1968)
VBR
After helping lay the groundwork for concept albums and progressive rock with 1967's orchestra-enhanced suite DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED, the Moodies retrenched for the follow-up. They abandoned the orchestra but kept their sound as rich as before by playing a multitude of instruments themselves, including everything from sitar to cello to oboe. At the time, it was remarkable enough for these instruments to appear on a rock record, much less to be played by the band itself. The string-laden conceptual pieces of DAYS were replaced by shorter, more concise songs that leaned more toward Beatlesque pop and displayed a pronounced Eastern influence. Graham Edge's short spoken-word pieces provide a properly arty framework for the Moodies' blend of swooping mellotron, haunting flute, and rich, multi-tracked harmonies. The slightly Hollies-ish "Ride my Seesaw," one of the band's strongest rockers, is a highlight. Flutist/vocalist Ray Thomas provides the quirky Britishness so essential to '60s UK pop-rock with his music-hall-on-acid number "Dr. Livingstone I Presume." The soaring harmonies of "Legend of a Mind" work in praise of Timothy Leary and his "trips to astral planes." IN SEARCH OF THE LOST CHORD is the most exotic, trippy album in the Moodies' catalog.

FOREIGNER - The Very Best Of (1992)

Foreigner was a hit-making machine in the late-70's/early-80's, cranking out one classic rock radio standard after another, and all are showcased here. The term 'arena rock' was virtually invented by such rockin' cuts as "Juke Box Hero," "Cold As Ice," "Urgent," "Double Vision," "Dirty White Boy," "Feels Like the First Time." And Foreigner was one of the first rock outfits to excel with the power ballad - both "Waiting for a Girl Like You" and "I Want to Know What Love Is" helped open the floodgates for similarly styled songs by others.

"MAD MAD WORLD is a thoughtful song cycle by a singer-songwriter who is very similar to Bryan Adams, but he's really a lot more than that. His style owes something to artists as diverse as Tom Petty, the Allman Brothers Band, and Bruce Cockburn. Unlike Adams, whose songs are mostly about love, romance, and having a good time, Cochrane's have a lot of subtle messages about personal survival, triumph, and hard work, although it's sometimes hard to figure out just what he's saying in many cases. EVA CASSIDY - Time After Time (2000)
192
As is so often the case, the talents of singer Eva Cassidy did note come to public attention until after her death. Cassidy died at a mere 33 years of age in 1996, and up until then she'd only been known in the local music scene of Washington D.C. Subsequently, a word-of-mouth groundswell earned her posthumous popularity in England, which then wafted back over to the U.S. TIME AFTER TIME is a good introduction to Cassidy's work. More an interpreter than a writer, Cassidy completely inhabits everything from Simon & Garfunkel's folky ballad "Kathy's Song" to Joni Mitchell's hippie anthem "Woodstock" and Bill Withers's brooding R&B classic "Ain't No Sunshine." Throughout the album, her singing is consistently both strong and reserved, betraying emotion without resorting to showy indulgence. An apt comparison might be an updated, American Sandy Denny, with whom Cassidy shares a special kind of quiet soul.

KATIE WEBSTER - The Swamp Boogie Queen (1988)
VBR
Until her death in 1999, Webster embodied the vitality of the modern New Orleans blues scene, with a booming but gentle voice and a barrelhouse piano style that was directly linked to the R&B-heavy classic period in Fat City. The swamp blues pianist delivered this raucous, soulful and occasionally horny album in 1988. Her piano trills, and sassy voice are uncomparable in terms of Blues legends. She just goes all out and hits everything. If you like a blues beat that catches you and takes you into it, you will love this CD. Hard to find in stores.

BRYAN FERRY + ROXY MUSIC - Platinum Collection (2004)
160
THE PLATINUM COLLECTION, a three-disc retrospective box set that puts Roxy Music's singles alongside frontman Bryan Ferry's solo work, illustrates how Ferry's sensibility, in many ways, defined Roxy Music from the outset, and determined its subsequent direction. The compilation proves Ferry a premiere art-rock conceptualist--the success of his style-conscious presentations, his penchant for soulful grooves, and his sophisticated, often orchestral approach to composition have been borne out by his long career. Sequenced chronologically, THE PLATINUM COLLECTION begins with "Virginia Plain" from Roxy Music's 1972 debut and ends with Ferry's 2002 single "A Fool for Love." Even on the early glam material, Ferry's interest in American soul and R&B is apparent (see the quirky, gospel-ized version of Dylan's "Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," his first solo single). Roxy Music's later work (FLESH & BLOOD, AVALON) continues the trend, with an increasing allegiance to romantic pop, lush productions, and smooth crooning. Ferry's solo career, which paralleled Roxy Music's almost from the beginning, reflects these tendencies, whether in choice of covers ("Smoke Gets in Your Eyes") or his memorable originals ("Slave to Love"). All told, the 45 tracks assembled here are a definitive overview of Ferry's work and a testament to his vision and achievement.

THE BEATLES - Last Licks Live (The Rooftop Concert, 1969)
320
The Beatles' celebrated rooftop show. An idea conceived during a meeting on 26 January, it was the first of two consecutive Beatles/Billy Preston performances which concluded the Get Back project, for on 31 January they ran through numbers inside the basement studio. This day's work has passed into history as the Beatles' last live performance, even if it couldn't be classified as a concert. The 42-minute show (about half of which comprises the sensational close to the Let It Be film) was a lunchtime blast into the cold wind - imagine a high London rooftop in January - that brought part of the capital to a standstill, until the police, in turn, brought the show to an enforced conclusion.

JOHN MARTYN VIDEO

Scottish born singer-songwriter/guitarist John Martyn began his innovative and expansive career at the age of 17 with a style influenced by American blues artists such as Robert Johnson and Skip James, the traditional music of his homeland, and the eclectic folk of Davey Graham. With the aid of his mentor, traditional singer Hamish Imlach, Martyn began to make a name for himself and eventually moved to London, where he became a fixture at Cousins, the center for the local folk scene that spawned the likes of Bert Jansch, Ralph McTell and Al Stewart. Soon after, he caught the attention of Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, who made him the first solo white act to join the roster of his reggae-based label. The subsequent album, London Conversation (Feb. 1968), only hinted at what was to come in Martyn's career. Although it contained touches of blues along with Martyn's rhythmic playing and distinctive voice, it was for the most part a fairly straightforward British folk record. With his follow-up later that same year, the Al Stewart-produced The Tumbler, Martyn began to slowly test other waters, employing backup musicians such as jazz reedman Harold McNair, to flesh out his sound. His voice also started to take on a jazzier quality as he began to experiment musically.

LAURA NYRO VIDEO

Laura Nyro (1947 -1997) was one of pop music's true originals: A brilliant and innovative composer, her songs found greater commercial success in the hands of other performers, but her own records - intricate, haunting works highlighting her singularly powerful vocal phrasing, evocative lyrics, and alchemical fusion of gospel, soul, folk, and jazz structures - remain her definitive artistic legacy. In 1966, Nyro issued her first LP, More Than a New Discovery; though commercially unsuccessful, the album was a treasure trove of material for other artists -- the Fifth Dimension scored with "Wedding Bell Blues" and "Blowin' Away," Barbra Streisand covered "Stoney End," and Blood, Sweat & Tears tackled "And When I Die." In 1967, Nyro made just her second major live appearance to date at the Monterey Pop Festival; her idiosyncratic performance baffled the crowd, and she was booed off the stage. Then-music agent David Geffen caught her set, however, and was so impressed that he quit his current position to become her manager. He also won Nyro a contract with Columbia, and in 1968 she returned with the extraordinary Eli and the Thirteenth Confession. While the album earned vast critical acclaim, she again found commercial success not with her own recordings, but with covers of Eli's songs, as the Fifth Dimension reached the charts with renditions of "Stoned Soul Picnic" and "Sweet Blindness," while "Eli's Comin'" became a major hit for Three Dog Night. At the age of 24, Nyro announced her retirement; she married, severed her industry connections, and moved to a small community in New England. However, the marriage ended in divorce, and in 1975 she resurfaced with Smile; a subsequent tour yielded the 1977 live set Season of Lights. However, the long layoff derailed whatever chart momentum her music had accrued, and after the dismal sales of 1978's Nested, she again retreated from the music business.

JACKSON BROWNE- Late For The Sky (1974)
320
His third album, and arguably his finest, Late for the Sky continues Browne's sincere self-analysis into positively grim territory. The title track concerns the lingering effects of a dead relationship and was featured in Martin Scorcese's film Taxi Driver. While "For a Dancer" confronts death head-on, "Farther On" explains the difficulties faced by us dorks who live life through books, films, or music; and "Before the Deluge" forecasts environmental gloom and doom. Guitarist David Lindley adds terrific counterpoint to Browne's musing, supporting the tracks with tasteful slide and fiddle work. The album was recorded in just six weeks and reached #14 on the Billboard Top Pop Album Chart and stayed on the chart for 29 weeks. It was also released for a short time (1974-1979) in a quadraphonic edition.

DOOBIE BROTHERS - Sibling Rivalry (2000)
VBR
The Doobies' first studio album of the new millennium--and their first in almost a decade--finds the veteran California hitmakers in fine form. With founding members Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons on hand, things are obviously covered in the vocal harmony department, and the rhythm section--featuring longtime drummers Michael Hossack and Keith Knudsen--sounds loaded for bear as well. Musically, save for the occasional hip-hop rhythm ("Jericho") what's here isn't all that different from their '70s (pre-Michael McDonald) heyday; Simmons' "Leave My Heartache Behind," for example, is clearly a fairly close cousin to "Black Water." In fact, the only really new wrinkle here is a certain apocalyptic tone, with lots of mentions of religious figures and the world going to hell in a hand basket. Veteran fans will doubtless be heartened by the album's concluding number "Five Corners," the latest in a long line of their lovely folk-tinged instrumental closers.

DAVID BOWIE - The Deram Anthology 66/68 (1997)
VBR
This is a collection of singles and rare tracks recorded by David Bowie on the Deram label. Recorded between 1966 and 1968. Prior to his transformation into the Thin White Duke, Ziggy Stardust or any of a half dozen personas that he's taken on throughout his career, David Bowie was just another art student struggling to make the leap to fame and fortune. THE DERAM ANTHOLOGY is a fascinating look into the early workings of a legendary artist. Bowie's mucking about for a hit included Anthony Newley-influenced numbers ("Rubber Band"), a novelty song ("The Laughing Gnome") swinging London lounge ("Love You Till Tuesday") and pale imitations of early Pink Floyd ("She's Got Medals.") Other more notable attempts to distinguish these numbers included adding lots of orchestration ("The London Boys"), weather-related sound effects ("Please Mr. Gravedigger") and kitschy banjo and clavinet arrangements ("Did You Ever Have A Dream"). After spending almost two years recording and watching his singles get roundly ignored by the public, Bowie started forming his unique style upon working with new producer Tony Visconti in late 1967 (This association would last another 13 years). Some of the earliest numbers of these sessions included the psychedelic folk of Bowie's mixed media trio Feathers on "Ching-A-Ling," the baroque grandiosity of "When I Live My Dream" and an early version of "Space Oddity," which is where it all started.

NELSON - Because They Can (1995)
192
We all know what happens to child stars. But what about the children of child stars? And what if they're twins? If their names are Gunnar and Matthew Nelson, it means a shot at pop stardom and a life-long legacy to live up to. In the mid-'80s the golden-locked twins had a brief moment of stardom that recalled memories of their famous father. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Nelson grew up on TV in the popular sitcom "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet," and later spun his teen stardom into a highly successful pop career in the late 1950's and '60s. With their squeaky-clean image, matching blond manes and pop-metal sound, Nelson may not have had their own sitcom, but they were the sound of easy-on-the-eyes metal in the early '90s. Their #1 debut, 1990's After the Rain, sold more than two million copies thanks to such ballads as "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection" (RealAudio excerpt) and two other top-10 singles.

GREGG ALLMAN - Laid Back (1973)

Gregg Allman takes on a mellow style on his first solo release and it works to a charm. The different arrangements of Midnight Rider and Please Call Home are just excellent. The horn arrangements on Queen Of Heaarts is just beautful and Will The Circle Be Unbroken will get you in a feel good mood with its gospel flavorings. JOAN BAEZ - The Best of Joan C. Baez (1993)
192
With the advent of the '70s, Joan Baez's music began to change. Her passionate commitment to human rights never wavered, but her romance with country music cooled, and message oriented, political songs began to interest her less. Instead, Baez began taking a decidedly more pop route. She began to sing more about personal experiences, her own songs beginningto reflect love, loss, and other issues surrounding the human condition. A rich and eclectic collection of 12 songs recorded during Baez's tenure with A&M Records, THE BEST OF showcases the folk singer in this period of artistic transition, displaying her ability to adapt to the changes wrought by a new decade. On "Please Come to Boston" she croons sadly,"I said no. Would you come home please.".. However, a more self-evidently optimistic tone is reflected in the Spanish tinged ballad, "Gracias A La Vida (Here's to Life)", and her famous rendition of Robbie Robertson's "The Night They DroveOl' Dixie Down" is more upbeat and danceable than The Band's original version.

DIRE STRAITS - Sultans of Swing: The Very Best Of Dire Straits (1998)
320
This VERY BEST OF begins there (even amid the ensemble's later hits, the lead-off track's clean shuffle rhythm and minor-key melody still dazzles) and continues all the way to cuts from the group's 1991 release, ON EVERY STREET, and their 1993 live outing, ON THE NIGHT. The Dylan-esque narrative of "Romeo and Juliet," from MAKING MOVIES, is one of the early highlights here. At the collection's heart are the tracks from the 1985 blockbuster BROTHERS IN ARMS, including the lamenting "So Far Away," bopping "Walk of Life," and the irrepressible "Money for Nothing." Beyond showcasing Knopfler's excellent songwriting, this album is graced by his light, technically precise guitar technique (he finger-picks all of his electric leads). More comprehensive than their previous greatest-hits package, MONEY FOR NOTHING, SULTANS OF SWING is an excellent introduction to Dire Straits.

J.B. LENOIR - Vietnam Blues - The Complete L&R Recording (1995)
256
VIETNAM BLUES combines two full-length albums, ALABAMA BLUES and DOWN IN MISSISSIPPI. Unlike any blues music released in the 1960s, the idiosyncratic acoustic forms created by J.B. Lenoir during his tenure with L&R Records recall traditional country blues while simultaneously pushing the genre in new directions. Miles removed--in conception and feel--from the electric Chicago blues of his early career, Lenoir's L&R work is wholly acoustic, intensely personal, and seems to pulse and surge to its own uniquely designed metronome. VIETNAM BLUES collects Lenoir's last two albums (before his untimely death in 1967), 1965's ALABAMA BLUES and 1966's DOWN IN MISSISSIPPI, both of which were produced under the supervision of blues icon Willie Dixon. The music on VIETNAM BLUES is quite stark, with the focus on Lenoir's mesmerizing open chords, syncopated embellishments, and high, soulful tenor. On several tracks, Dixon provides additional vocals and drummer Freddie Below lends his brushwork (on what sounds like a lone snare drum) to the shuffling, driving rhythms, further heightening the intimate, front-porch feel. But what really strikes the listener is Lenoir's songwriting, which fearlessly takes on issues like racial discrimination and the Vietnam War with eloquence and passion. Politically committed and performed with searing intensity, Lenoir's last recordings are the finest of his career, the crowning achievement of his overlooked legacy.

CHRIS THOMAS KING - Rise (2006)
VBR
Louisiana bluesman Chris Thomas King's brilliant and beautiful Rise is an ode to New Orleans and its people after Katrina. These 11 songs ricochet between hope and tragedy, creating a emotionally complex cycle that's buoyed by his carefully considered performances--full of weeping electric guitar melodies and his gentlest, most soulful singing. The opening King-penned trilogy "What Would Jesus Do?," "Faith," and "Baptized in Dirty Water" essays the tests of strength and spirit that came with the floodwaters. King examines the nature of justice in these songs, raising questions about the federal government's blindness to the unfolding disaster and the moral compromises many needed to make to survive. He's also given some Crescent City classics new meaning. His take on the chestnut "St. James Infirmary" reflects on the musical history of New Orleans as well as the loss of life caused by the hurricane. And when Louis Armstrong's sweetly upbeat "What a Wonderful World" closes the album, its joyful lyrics provide an ironic counterpoint to the pain and suffering King chronicles as the rest of Rise's thoughtful songs unspool. - Ted Drozdowski

LEON BIBB & ERIC BIBB - Praising Peace (A Tribute To Paul Robeson) (2006)
VBR
Thirty years on from his death, Paul Robeson is best remembered as the black American singer, actor and athlete who spent his life fighting racism and was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Leon Bibb, the singer and father of contemporary blues star Eric Bibb, was a close friend of Robeson, and this tribute matches old Robeson favourites against new songs and settings by Eric. The new material is pleasant, if worthy, while the old songs range from Eric's easy-going harmonica-backed country blues treatment of Home in That Rock, to some fine, sturdy and no-nonsense singing from his dad. The selection covers the full range of Robeson's repertoire, from spirituals to socialism and sentimentality, and the gospel favourites like Motherless Child or the union anthem Joe Hill are predictably more interesting than yet another reworking of Shenandoah or Danny Boy. One is left wanting to hear how Robeson himself used to treat them.

MIKE BLOOMFIELD - Celebrating The Blues (2006)
VBR
Featuring the legendary American blues guitarist Mike Bloomfield performing live in a small West Coast club, this set was recorded in the early 1970s. While Bloomfield's voice was never his strongest asset, his distinctive guitar playing is much in evidence on a collection that includes both blues standards and unusual choices like "Darktown Strutters Ball," played as part of a ragtime medley. This set also features the pianist Mark Naftalin, with whom the guitarist worked extensively in the early 1970s.

CARLOS GUITARLOS - Hell Can Wait (2005)
VBR
Throughout the 90's and into the new millennium, Carlos Guitarlos could be found playing guitar for pocket change on the streets of San Francisco’s Mission District. Oftentimes, Carlos slept on those same cold streets where he eventually became a street-corner legend (The SF Bay Guardian name him the city’s "Best Street Musician" in 1994). For the one-time musical leader of legendary Los Angeles roots-rockers Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs -- inspiration for the 1984 Van Halen song "Top Jimmy" -- it had been a long, slow downward spiral of divorce, diabetes, and drugs. In the wake of his hard-knock life, Carlos found himself in a San Francisco hospital, fighting for his life with congestive heart failure. That experience, combined with the alcohol-related death of his friend and former band-mate, Top Jimmy, proved to be the catalyst of his personal turnaround. Within a couple of weeks of his hospital stay, with the help of his family, Carlos finally found his way back into a recording studio, hence the release of "Straight from the Heart" in 2003, which features the helping hands of old pals Mike Watt, John Doe, and Dave Alvin. The album’s title track was written from his hospital bed. Showcasing Carlos’s stinging, fluid fretwork, lived-in vocals, and uncanny ability to write original songs in a wide variety of classic styles, the album made Rolling Stone Magazine’s "Top Albums of 2003" and it was swiftly picked up for national distribution, a fact that was covered by Billboard Magazine, who described his re-emergence as "one of the most surprising music stories of the year."

DAVID CASSIDY & THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY - Could It Be Forever: The Greatest Hits (2006)

One of the biggest stars of the 1970s returns with Could It Be Forever, a hits album to break hearts all over again. As part of The Partridge Family on TV in the 1970s, David Cassidy burned very brightly as a star, breaking teenage girls' hearts all around the world with a succession of hits such as How Can I Be Sure, Daydreamer and, of course, Dreams Are Nothin' More Than Wishes. When he retired from the music world in 1974 to take to the stage, more than a few tears were shed. However, good times are here again. A new collection of all the David Cassidy & The Partridge Family hits has been released, and we have three tracks to bring all the memories flooding back. Daydreamer was a UK No 1 in 1973, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do reached the top three, and Looking Through The Eyes Of Love also cracked the UK top 10. No longer the fallen idol, Cassidy last graced our shores to play live five years ago, but fear not - the wait is nearly over. He'll be back on stage singing all these hits and more in March 2007 as he tours with The Osmonds and David Essex.

RORY BLOCK - The Lady And Mr. Johnson (2006)
VBR
Covers incl.
"Recording for forty years now, Rory Block has devoted the entirety of her newest album to the songs of Robert Johnson. This is no mere dalliance or bandwagon jumping for her, as this music has informed her own musical path from the outset, starting with her love of his records when she was just a child. Her subsequent studies of Rev. Gary Davis, Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt and others put her in good stead for understanding the dynamics of one guitar and voice. Like some of those blues masters, Block uses the subtle complexities of fingerpicking combined with occasional slide work to create a whole that has the range of a small combo. What's amazing in hearing these thirteen songs is how fully they became part of the blues lexicon -- not just the individual songs, but their entire bearing." - David Greenberger

SIMPLE MINDS - Real Life (1991)
192
Simple Minds' first '90s album is also the first album where the group is reduced to the duo of singer Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill, plus backing musicians. Kerr and Burchill, always the band's musical core, handle the transition from band to duo with grace; REAL LIFE sounds more like a classic Simple Minds album than anything they'd released since 1984's UP ON THE CATWALK. In places, however, the resemblance is slightly too close. The single "Travelling Man" bears more than a little likeness to the 1984 hit "Waterfront"; even more blatantly, "Let the Children Speak" is simply the 1981 instrumental "Theme for Great Cities" with added new vocals and lyrics by Kerr. On the other hand, better that Kerr and Burchill plagiarized themselves than repeat the Springsteen - meets-U2 sound that marred 1989's STREET FIGHTING YEARS.

SHERMAN ROBERTSON & BLUES MOVE - Guitar Man - Live (2005)
320
Sherman Robertson was born in Louisiana and raised in Houston (USA). He quickly earned a local reputation as a guitarist, and while still in high school he was recruited to play in the group “Connie’s Combo”. As a teenager in the late 60’s, he played on the road with Bobby “Blue” Band, and also backed Junior Parker. That gave Sherman the incentive to form his own band, “Sherman Robertson and the Crosstown Blues Band”, with whom he recorded two albums. During the 70’s, Clifton Chenier, th “King of Zydeco”, asked him to do some dates with his band, which turned into five years touring Europe and U.S. The word on Robertson's talent began to spread. Paul Simon needed a guitar player to add some sounds to his Graceland album and he chose Robertson. Soon after, British producer Mike Vernon signed Robertson to Atlantic Records. Robertson's first solo recording, “I'm The Man”, was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award. His second album, “Here And Now”, was released in 1996 to more critical acclaim. In 1998, producer Joe Harley assembled a first class band for a project for the AudioQuest label, including two members of Little Feat, Bill Payne and Richie Hayward. That resorted in the album, “Going Back Home”. “Guitar Man-Live” is his last and long awaited CD, recorded live in 2005 by Sherman Robertson and Blues Move.

MAGIC SAM - West Side Soul (1967)
VBR
Many believe this 1967 landmark, Sam Maghett's first full-length studio recording, is the greatest blues album ever made. While that assertion is awfully difficult to substantiate, these 11 gems (plus one alternate) certainly deserve hyperbolic praise. These cuts have a dramatically direct emotional appeal, a blunt, unfiltered artlessness that's rarely been achieved in an electric setting. Sam's spirited vocals come from his heart and his belly, not his brain. His guitar work is smoothly melodic, a la B. B. King with a bit more bite, frenetic and energetic like Buddy Guy, but with more taste. Since this Mississippi native died at age 32, this album sits in a mystical place in blues history: In many ways, it is to Chicago blues what Robert Johnson's meager output is to Delta blues.

MARY BLACK - The Collection (1992)
320
Mary Black is a performer equally at home singing traditional Irish folk tunes and contemporary music including blues, rock, jazz, country and soul. She was born into a musical family the daughter of a fiddler and a singer. She started out professionally with her brother and sister in Dublin nightclubs and then performed with General Humbert, a folk group until 1982 when she released her eponymous solo debut. The album made it to the Top Five on the Irish album charts and won the Irish Independent Arts Award for Music. At the invitation of Alec Finn, Black joined the band De Dannan. A week later, she took part in the recording of Song of Ireland with them. She remained with De Dannan for three years. In 1984, Black helped produce and sang back-up on the Black's Family Favourites album. She was still performing with De Dannan when she launched her solo career with the Declan Sinnott-produced largely pop album Without the Fanfare. Many of the tracks went gold and for both 1987 and 1988 she was named Best Female Artist in the Irish Rock Music Awards Poll. Black's music crossed the Atlantic in 1990 when her 1989 album No Frontiers, debuted in the U.S. and climbed to the Top 20 of the New Adult Contemporary charts. It was also a top seller in Ireland. That year Black began a successful concert tour of Japan. Though her music is firmly based in Irish tradition, Black is interested in performing all kinds of music. Her first influences included Sandy Denny and the Fairport Convention. Other influences include Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin and Bonnie Raitt.

TAB BENOIT - Best Of The Bayou Blues (2006)
VBR
What's best about Best of the Bayou Blues is Tab Benoit's spankin' electric guitar tones and lean 'n' nasty licks on numbers like the ode to Cajun living "Voodoo on the Bayou" and the stinging, vibrato-drenched epic "These Blues are All Mine." This collection of Louisiana-themed tunes plucked from Benoit's five early Vanguard albums relate to the singer-and-six-stringer's swampland raising. They also showcase his versatility--veering from his customary plugged-in blues framework to a gentle acoustic take on the Delta classic "Mother Earth" to a roaring zydeco romp through Clifton Chenier's dancehall anthem "Hot Tamale Baby. " Willie Nelson guests on "Rainy Day Blues," trading vocals and blending his nylon-string guitar with Benoit's Telecaster. A brisk jaunt through Hank Williams's "Jambalaya" seems more lagniappe than main course, but when Benoit's guitar comes crying into the soulful, homesick "Nice and Warm"--which plays out like a page written in this road warrior's diary on an especially lonely night--he more than compensates for the few slights among these tunes.

JOHN LEE HOOKER Jr. - Cold As Ice (2006)
VBR
This son of the legendary Mississippi blues giant doesn't have his father's aura of brooding mystery, raw baritone voice, or choogling guitar style, yet he is an original nevertheless. On the follow-up to his 2004 Grammy-nominated Blues with a Vengeance, the laconic singer and lyricist mixes straight-up Chicago Blues and smooth Southern soul with flourishes of funk and contemporary R&B. He's not an outright modernist; the traditional rhythms and horn charts see to that. Nonetheless, in the medley "Four Hours Straight/Blues Man" and "Got to Be Me," Hooker's nearly rapping. And references to text messaging and the couplet "her sexual modus operandi was that of a freak / it was so addictive it would make you tweak" could work for OutKast. Of course, there are nods to his father, like the touching reminiscence "Do Daddy (Requiem for John Lee Hooker)" and a lackluster reading of his "In the Mood." But the junior Hooker Seems determined to make a name for himself, rather than merely capitalize on Dad's.
