JEREMY SPENCER - Bend In The Road (2012) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Jeremy Spencer, legendary singer, guitarist and founder of the original Fleetwood Mac (remember that when he became a part of the group, the bass player still wasn't John McVie but Bob Brunning), has just released a new work. The project has appeared in two different formats, cd and double LP. The vinyl includes three songs that are not in the cd and the front cover presents a beautiful illustration done by Jeremy, while the cd brings one additional song that does not appear in the LP and shows a current picture of the singer and guitarist with his 'Mona' guitar in the foreground. In the inner booklet Jeremy gives a detailed explanation about how this project was born and its evolution since the moment he met another great musician, Brett Lucas, who also participates as guitar, producer and arranger of the whole tracks. Spencer also tell us most details of every song, its history, the style, the arrangements, the memories…

Of course songs have not been chosen by chance, but they are a result of a thoughtful and very elaborated work. Ambitious arrangements and final production are carefully done to the slightest detail. The result is a magnificent, mature, elegant actual sound. All musicians are very professional ones, they sound really teamed, and completely involved in the project, so final result could not be more intense, majestic and brilliant. Songs for all tastes, from pop ballads, to country and gospel music, or the most hard Elmore James blues, Jeremy always has loved and venerated, and other songs inspired in such different things like Eddie Cochran’s material, or verses from the Bible that deeply influenced Jeremy at the time he lived with God Children.

ROBERT CRAY BAND - Nothing But Love (2012)

Robert Cray is a 5 time Grammy award winning singer/songwriter guitar legend who was inducted into the 2011 Blues Hall of Fame. Cray has released 20 award winning platinum albums and in addition to his Grammy awards, has been nominated an additional 15 times. Robert has performed with Blues titans Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton and B.B. King-touring extensively with both Albert Collins and Eric Clapton and has his own line of Fender Signature Guitars. Since becoming crown prince of the blues in the late 80s, Cray has won Grammies and played alongside 12-bar aristocrats such as BB King but has often seemed on cruise control. As a suited-up Mad Men cover shot sests, he has his mojo back. Won't Be Coming Home puts Cray in the driveway watching his woman's tail light vanish, pitting weary vocals against stinging guitar. I'm Done Crying, a slow, soul-soaked epic with strings, has him testifying magnificently. This is the 16th studio album from Grammy award winning blues icon Robert Cray. The album was recorded live in two weeks at the Revolver Studios in LA and is produced by Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden). Producer Kevin Shirley keeps things taut and gritty (the sessions took just a fortnight) and Cray burns with urgency.

V.A. - Exile On Blues Street (2003)

This disc is an integral part of a series Telarc is doing - taking albums that were big sellers by prominent artists and having an innovative group of solid blues players do their interpretations of a variety of the songs from the original album. They have done this with the Beatles' White Album (calling it The Blues White Album) and Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde with good success, which will probably continue with this new interpretation of the Stones' 1972 vintage album. Telarc put together a dynamite "house" band, including Brian Stoltz (ex-Neville Brothers) on guitar and former Double Trouble rhythm section members Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton, and then pulled in many more celebrated artists to handle the leads. the Stones, who started out as a blues and R&B band, always maintained those roots; thus, many of the songs keep their original shape. This is a solid retooling of this classic Stones LP. Telarc has taken the original double disc and picked the songs the artists felt remained truest to their respective traditions and packaged it as a ten-song disc, complete with a cover notes that make it look the same. You probably won't be surprised by the tunes; however, there are some great takes here that will make the listener want to investigate some of the artists they used. Give a listen to Lucky Peterson's version of "Ventilator Blues," or maybe Jeff Lang's rendition of "Sweet Virginia." The contribution of the backing band is solid all the way through. A strong addition to this potentially wonderful series.

This CD is a tribute to The Rolling Stones 1972 release, commonly referred to as "Exile On Main Street".

TRACKS:
01. Ventilator Blues - Lucky Peterson 02. All Down The Line - Christine Ohlman 03. Rip This Joint - Tommy Castro 04. Sweet Black Angel - Otis Taylor 05. Sweet Virginia - Jeff Lang 06. Tumbling Dice - Colin James 07. Shake Your Hips - Tab Benoit 08. Shine A Light - Joe Louis Walker 09. Happy - Deborah Coleman 10. Rocks Off - Jimmy Thackery

JT COLDFIRE - Always & Never (2012) thumbup

JT Coldfire has played professionally for over 15 of his 31 years from Texas to New York and across the pond in Europe. Throughout his career, JT has gained the reputation as one of the hardest working musicians in Austin, sometimes playing 3 shows in a single evening never repeating the same song twice for over 9 hours of live performance. His travels all over the Texas Gulf Coast, klahoma, Tennessee, New York and as far off as Sweden, have gained an audience that is as dedicated to his performances as he is to delivering them. His virtuosity as a singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer has garnered praise as one of the unsung heroes of the new crop of Austin blues artists.

Always & Never is a fun album that occasionally brings a touch of Texas-style class and a light dose of good-hearted menace. JT has a refreshingly unique style of music; a Texas-themed gumbo full of Jump Blues, outlaw country, and spiced with personality. The album, with it’s humor and emotion, is simply fun to listen to, and fans of most blues genres will easily find something to enjoy.

ALVIN LEE - Still On The Road To Freedom (2012)

After Lee left Ten Years After in 1974, he produced a series of solo albums that continued to demonstrate his distinctive vocals and linear guitar chops, even if they didn’t always contain memorable material. But one standout was 1973’s On the Road to Freedom, which co-billed Lee and Gospel singer Mylon LeFevre. Supporting players included George Harrison, Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Ronnie Wood, and Mick Fleetwood. Now, one year shy of being 40 years later, Lee has released a sequel, Still on the Road to Freedom. It not only invokes its 1973 namesake, any Ten Years After fan will find more than enough on this disc to take them back in space and time.

This time around, Still on the Road to Freedom doesn’t rely on an all-star cast. Keeping close to the simplicity of roots traditions, Lee’s group is Pete Pritchard (bass), Richard Newman (drums), and Tim Hinkley (keyboard). Together, they touch quite a few musical bases from very old schools.

TRACKS:
01. Still On The Road To Freedom 02. Listen To Your Radio Station 03. Midnight Creeper 04. Save My Stuff 05. I'm A Lucky Man 06. Walk On, Walk Tall 07. Blues Got Me So Bad 08. Song Of The Red Rock Mountain 09. Nice & Easy 10. Back In 69 11. Down Line Rock 12. Rock You 13. Love Like A Man 2

LUCINDA WILLIAMS - Ramblin' (1979)

Originally released on Folkways Records, Lucinda Williams' debut album consists of nothing but acoustic country blues in the tradition of the Louisiana Delta where the singer/songwriter was raised. Not that Williams had the blues' traditional impoverished upbringing-her father is an academic and a well-regarded poet. RAMBLIN' works, however, because of Williams' obvious mastery of the country blues form and her already impressive instrumental and vocal skills. Williams' voice and 12-string guitar are almost the album's only features, with second guitarist John Grimaudo adding unobtrusive accompaniment to a handful of tracks. Williams' taste runs to the obscure here. Of these 14 songs, the most familiar to those who aren't blues historians are Hank Williams' "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)" and the gospel mainstay "Great Speckled Bird." The rest are blues classics of varying degrees of obscurity, with no original songs but plenty of passion and soul. An excellent traditional country blues album. - cduniverse.com

BILLY SHEEHAN

William "Billy" Sheehan is an American bassist known for his work with Talas, Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, and Niacin. Sheehan has won the "Best Rock Bass Player" readers' poll from Guitar Player Magazine five times for his "lead bass" playing style. Sheehan's repertoire includes the use of chording, two-handed tapping, right-hand "three-finger picking" technique and controlled feedback.

In the history of rock there have been precious few bassists as prolific and grand in stature than Billy Sheehan. In his every move, there is a little grace and danger. That is, when Billy Sheehan takes command of a rhythm section, it’s not with a torrid rush of notes but with a series of well-considered phrases. This is not to say he plays it safe, though. Billy has a way of making a song threatening and foreboding. Sheehan’s presence is undeniable. His masterful grooves project across the rows, his oft cited "spider fingers" creating relentless pulsations. Ah, and then there’s his sound, the real hallmark of the professional. A look at his massive collection of instruments, from basses fretted and unfretted, to baritones, to guitars, reveals a dedication to his craft that exceeds that of the mere journeyman. Many an instrument receives a Sheehan modification, attaining a roughly scalloped neck or, perhaps, custom electronics.

Prime Cuts (2006)
As you will hear in Billy Sheehan: Prime Cuts, Magna Carta Records founder Peter Morticelli has assembled a diverse and stellar collection of tracks. Pete’s recollections of the bassist go back to an era when Billy Sheehan was proving to Buffalo and upstate crowds that he was born for the stadium. "I've known Billy for thirty years," Pete reflects. "I used to see him play in Talas at local clubs. There was never any doubt that he was going to be recognized as the best bass player in rock; it was his destiny. It was always obvious to me that Billy was a revolutionary player. He is a smart guy with a good sense of humor. All that comes out in his playing." Billy Sheehan’s Magna Carta repertoire is, with great respect, more interesting and provocative than his work with David Lee Roth and Mr. Big. On Magna Carta releases, Sheehan is reacting to novel musical circumstances. Tweak the volume and prepare for an adrenaline rush.
TRACKS:

Holy Cow! (2009)
Legendary Bass Master Bill Sheehan is releasing his much anticipated third solo album entitled Holy Cow! on Mascot Records U.S.A. April 14th, 2009. The albums tracks showcase Sheehan s immense talents as both a singer/songwriter and instrumentalist. Sheehan pulled in top-notch arsenal with guest performances by Billy Gibbons on A Lit l Bit l Do It To Ya Ev ry Time , Paul Gilbert (who played with Sheehan in Mr Big) on Dynamic Exhilarator , Dug Pinnick (Kings-X) on the song Turning Point as well as Ray Luzier on drums and shred master Tony MacAlpine. Sheehan has played over 4,000 gigs with a career that includes stints with Talas, David Lee Roth, Mr Big, and Steve Vai. Voted the Best Rock Bass Player 5 times in Guitar Player magazines Readers Poll, an honor which placed Sheehan in their Gallery of Greats (alongside Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, Geddy Lee and Eddie Van Halen to name but a few). With cumulative sales of over 4 million records in his career, Billy Sheehan has made the album his fans have been waiting for, over the top playing with strong songs. Sheehan continues to stretch the boundaries of the bass guitar while showcasing his immense talent as a guitarist (Baritone 12 string and 6 string guitars) and singer. Look for a Billy Sheehan solo tour to promote this album in the very near future. - amazon.com

LUCINDA WILLIAMS - Happy Woman Blues (1980) thumbup

Happy Woman Blues is an album by Lucinda Williams, her second professional release. It was released in 1980. While her debut album consisted entirely of cover recordings, all the Happy Woman Blues were written by Wiliams herself.

All too often dismissed as an immature work that was quickly eclipsed by her self-titled breakthrough on Rough Trade, Williams's second and final album for Folkways reveals much about her current lyrical sensibility and vocal approach. Most singer-songwriters, in fact, would give their Martins for songs as good as "Lafayette" and "Maria." That she reprises "I Lost It" on Car Wheels on a Gravel Road and continues to explore this album's themes, the value of native ground and the endurance of loss, is enough evidence that, while not as overwhelming as the work to come, Happy Woman Blues should not be overlooked by fans of this vital artist. Happy Woman Blues is the first recording to establish Lucinda as a songwriter of note. Lucinda's country and blues roots are evident throughout these compositions, and are off-set by her fresh, contemporary treatment. Liner notes by renowned critic John Morthland offer a passionate glimpse into the mind and career of this truly original artist.

JEREMY SPENCER - Precious Little (2006)

Sensational comeback from the Fleetwood Mac legend. Jeremy Spencer's signature slide guitar and vocals helped define the early sound of Fleetwood Mac. After 30 years, with his chops fully intact, Jeremy has returned with a stunning new record. Recorded in a Norwegian studio in 2005 during the Notodden Blues Festival, Precious Little easily equals any of his early triumphs.

Precious Little is a big surprise — a late-life comeback by slide guitarist and singer Jeremy Spencer, who’s been largely missing in action since he left a Fleetwood Mac tour in 1971 to join a religious cult called the Children of God. The early Fleetwood Mac, arguably Britain’s best blues band, was snakebit, having also lost the brilliant guitarist Peter Green to drugs and mental illness. In recent years, Green has returned to recording, but the results have been tentative, and less than inspired. By contrast, Spencer (playing here with a Norwegian blues band) sounds both confident and relaxed throughout this set of parlor blues, and his slide guitar is nothing less than virtuosic.

JEREMY SPENCER - Jeremy Spencer and The Children

Jeremy Spencer and the Children is an album by British blues rock musician Jeremy Spencer, who was a member of Fleetwood Mac from 1967 to 1971. Released in 1972, this is his second solo album although it was credited to Jeremy Spencer and the Children, referring to his band made up of members of the Children of God (Family International) organisation. After leaving Fleetwood Mac while on tour in the United States in February 1971, Spencer joined the Children of God and has remained with the organisation ever since. The band toured in the US and released a single "Can You Hear the Song" / "The World in Her Heart" to accompany this album. The lyrics were heavily religious, with references to the love of God, finding purpose in life within Christianity, along with anti-war themes and apocalypticism.

Although this was the first recording for which Spencer dropped his mimicry and parody of 1950s music and Elmore James blues tunes, he nevertheless continued to show his talent for drawing inspiration from other styles of music. Influences from many contemporary sources can be heard, such as The Byrds, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Spencer has often stated in interviews that he was unhappy with the poor production quality on the album, once declaring, "It was just like mud." It has never been released on CD, and Spencer has said that the master recordings were lost in a fire many years ago, but recently he expressed an interest in reworking some of the songs

MUD - Mud Rock & Mud Rock Vol.II (1998)

Mud were an English glam rock band, formed in February 1968, best remembered for their singles "Tiger Feet", which was the UK's best-selling single of 1974, and Lonely This Christmas which reached number 1 in December 1974. After signing to RAK Records and teaming up with songwriters/producers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, the band had fourteen UK Top 20 hits between 1973 and 1976, including three number ones. After three hit singles, an album seemed a logical next step, and one was knocked off in mid-1974, called Mud Rock, done as a fake live performance which included a medley of the three hits and a series of covers of classic rock & roll, everything from the Contours' "Do You Love Me" and Chuck Berry's "Bye Bye Johnny" to a Marcels-style rendition of Rodgers & Hart's "Blue Moon," with a nod to big-band music in the form of "In the Mood." Mud Rock sold well, and the band might've gone on perfectly well this way, cutting hit singles and doing an LP once a year, but for a problem that came up late in 1974, when Mud was persuaded to sign a contract with the new Private Stock label.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD - Last Of A Dyin' Breed (2012)

"Last of a Dyin' Breed" is the thirteenth studio album by American southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. The album was announced on May 2nd, 2012 for release on August 21st, 2012, and September 17th in the UK. It is the first Lynyrd Skynyrd album to feature Johnny Colt on bass.

Anytime Lynyrd Skynard comes out with a new CD, infrequently as that maybe, the reaction is almost universally the same: They're not as good as the original seventies line-up. But that doesn't mean Skynyrd's second incarnation can't rock. In fact, to my ears, their brand new album "Last Of A Dyin' Breed" is one of the best in their career. The best description of Last Of A Dyin' Breed" is: Solid Rock. Though, as with most things, it has its highs and lows. But this band is pure Classic Rock, and rocks good. It's been about 34 years since Ronnie Van Zant's passing in an airplane crash, and younger brother Johnny has proven himself to be a solid frontman since that time. The technical ability of Van Zant, guitarists Gary Rossington, Rickey Medlocke, and Mark Matejka, new bassist Johnny Colt, killer drummer Michael Cartellone (ex- Damn Yankees) and keyboardist Peter Pisarcyzk is not up for debate. These are musicians who still provide 'wow' moments on "Last Of A Dyin' Breed".

TRACKS:

GARY MOORE - All The Best (2012)

Acknowledged as one of the finest musicians that the British Isles has ever produced, and with a career that dated back to the 1960s, there were few musical genres that Gary Moore had not turned his adroit musical hand to. Gracing the line-ups of several notable rock bands, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II and (The Original) Skid Row, in his time, he also established himself as a world-class guitarist, with few equals. Gary was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on April 4th 1952. Like many others, he was turned on to rock and roll first through hearing Elvis Presley, and then via The Beatles. Seeing the likes of Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in his hometown in the mid-60s opened up to him the rich world of The Blues. Hearing the art of the blues guitar performed by such lauded exponents as Peter Green fired Moore's nascent talent, and it wasn't long before he was being hailed as a teen musical prodigy. Indeed, it was Green himself who helped foster Moore's career, a debt that was repaid handsomely when Gary cut his warm and heartfelt tribute to his mentor, the 'Blues For Greeny' album, released in 1995....gary-moore.com

V.A. - Soul to Soul (2004) thumbup

Soul To Soul was a concert held in Accra, Ghana on March 6, 1971 by an array of American R&B, soul, rock, and jazz musicians. It is also the name of a 1971 documentary film recording the concert.

Ghana, after declaring its independence in 1957, had made a variety of efforts to connect with African-Americans, some of whom — including Maya Angelou, W. E. B. Du Bois. and George Padmore — lived in the African nation for a time. In the mid 1960s, Angelou approached the government of Kwame Nkrumah and sested bringing a number of African-American artists to Ghana for the annual independence celebrations. Nkrumah was deposed before action could be taken, but when the American father-son team of Ed Mosk and Tom Mosk approached the Ghana Arts Council in 1970 with an idea for a concert, the Council agreed. A massive 1970 concert by James Brown in Lagos, Nigeria had prompted the Mosks' confidence in the idea. Of the musicians invited to perform, Wilson Pickett was by far the biggest star in Ghana, where he was known as "Soul Brother No. 2." (James Brown was, of course, Soul Brother No. 1.) Organizers also unsuccessfully sought performances by Americans Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Booker T & The MG's, Louis Armstrong and gospel singer Marion Williams. In addition, Fela Kuti was approached, but did not perform. The show was held in Black Star Square (now Independence Square) on the Gulf of Guinea and ran 14 hours, finishing at 6:45 a.m. with a gospel set by The Voices of East Harlem. Several at the show remarked that Santana, despite having only one black member, played the most "African-sounding" music of the night. Some have argued that the band's merger of Latin rhythms with rock music strongly influenced the development of Afrobeat. - wikipedia

10CC and GODLEY & CREME - Changing Faces: The Best Of (1987)

Godley & Creme were an English rock duo composed of Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. The pair began releasing albums as a duo after splitting from the pop band 10cc. In 1979 they directed their first music video for their own single "An Englishman in New York". After this, they became involved in directing videos for such artists as Ultravox, The Police, Duran Duran, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Wang Chung, as well as directing the ground-breaking promo for their own "Cry" in 1985. The duo split at the end of the 1980s and have both been involved in music videos, TV commercials, and sporadic music projects since.

This album demonstrates 10cc's ability to play any style at all. Songs are often pastiches or gently poke fun (Particularly at the music industry). The quality of the mucianship is extremely high. Technically practically perfect! Wall Street Shuffle is an absolute classic, along with I'm Not In Love of course. This compilation of greatest hits does not fully reflect 10cc's all round ability. Their singles were not always their best work. Occasionally perhaps the silliness of the lyrics can go a bit overboard but if if you want an album that's different and will make you smile this is it. How many music albums can be as funny as a stand up comic? - amazon.com

J.D. SOUTHER - Border Town: The Very Best Of J.D. Souther (2007)

J.D. (for John David) Souther was never a front-runner during the peak of the L.A. singer/songwriter boom of the '70s and '80s, but he was never far from those who were. His songwriting for one-time lover Linda Ronstadt and for the Eagles, which evolved out of Ronstadt's backing band, provided them both with some fine material (including the Eagles' "Heartache Tonight," "Best of My Love," and "New Kid in Town"), and as one-third of the underrated Souther-Hillman-Furay Band with ex-Poco frontman Richie Furay and original Byrds member Chris Hillman, he was briefly in the spotlight as a performer. Souther also recorded four solo albums, two of which charted but didn't really establish him as a major force, but until now his representation on CD has been slim. This British compilation draws from all four of those solos and Souther-Hillman-Furay, and reveals Souther to be a smart craftsman of up-tempo country-rock and ballads. "If You Have Crying Eyes," a duet with Ronstadt, is typical, driven by a shimmering acoustic guitar, Souther's plaintive lead vocals, the pair's close harmonies, and tight backing from an orchestra's worth of support musicians. The title track, by the SHF band, is a spirited tune from 1974 filled out by pedal steel guitar and Joe Lala's crisp percussion, and "You're Only Lonely," Souther's best known solo song, pays a respectful tribute to his fellow Texan Roy Orbison without really mimicking him. - allmusic.com

GLENN FREY

Glenn Lewis Frey is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and actor, best known as a founding member of the Eagles. Frey formed the Eagles after he met drummer Don Henley in 1970 and the two eventually joined Linda Ronstadt's backup band for her summer tour. The Eagles formed in 1971 and released their debut album in 1972. Glenn Frey played guitar with the Eagles as well as piano and keyboards, and shared lead vocals with Don Henley. The Eagles broke up in 1980 after becoming one of the most successful bands of all time. Frey sang lead vocals on many Eagles hits such as "Take It Easy", "Peaceful Easy Feeling", "Tequila Sunrise", "Already Gone", "Lyin' Eyes", "New Kid in Town", and "Heartache Tonight". After the breakup of the Eagles in 1980, Frey embarked on a successful solo career. He released his debut album in 1982 and went on to record Top 40 hits "The One You Love", "Smler's Blues", "Sexy Girl", "The Heat Is On", and "You Belong to the City". As a member of the Eagles, Frey has won six Grammys, and five American Music Awards. The Eagles have sold over 120 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. As a solo artist and with the Eagles combined, Frey has released 24 Top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

No Fun Aloud (1982)
No Fun Aloud is the first solo album by Glenn Frey, released in 1982 (see 1982 in music). It was fairly received by critics and became a moderate commercial success. The album reached #32 on the charts and released two top 40 singles with "The One You Love" and "I Found Somebody". The album would reach gold status, having sold half a million copies in the U.S. alone.
TRACKS:
01. I Found Somebody 02. The One You Love 03. Partytown 04. I Volunteer 05. I've Been Born Again 06. Sea Cruise 07. That Girl 08. All Those Lies 09. She Can't Let Go 10. Don't Give Up

The Allnighter (1984)
The Allnighter is the second album by Glenn Frey, released in 1984 (see 1984 in music). It was the most successful album of his solo career, having reached #22 on the charts and releasing two Top 20 singles with "Smler's Blues" and "Sexy Girl". The album was well received by most critics and helped Frey become a familiar face throughout the decade. The album reached gold status. The single "Smler's Blues" helped inspire the Miami Vice episode and Frey was invited to star in the episode. The music video for the single also won Frey an MTV Video Music Award in 1985.
TRACKS:
01. The Allnighter 02. Sexy Girl 03. I Got Love 04. Somebody Else 05. Lovers Moon 06. Smler's Blues 07. Let's Go Home 08. Better in the U.S.A. 09. Living in the Darkness 10. New Love

Soul Searchin' (1988)
Soul Searchin' is the third album by Glenn Frey, released in 1988. The album was not as successful as Frey's previous albums (although one of his favorites) and was relatively rejected by critics. The album only reached #36 on the charts and released one Top 20 single with "True Love (Glenn Frey song)".
TRACKS:
01. Livin' Right 02. Some Kind of Blue 03. True Love 04. Can't Put Out This Fire 05. I Did It for Your Love 06. Let's Pretend We're Still in Love 07. Working Man 08. Soul Searchin' 09. Two Hearts 10. It's Your Life 11. It's Cold In Here

Strange Weather (1992)
Strange Weather is the fourth album by Glenn Frey, released in 1992. Though the album was considered an improvement from Frey's previous album by critics, the album went largely unnoticed by the public. The album failed to chart and none of its three singles reached the Top 40, a first for Frey. However, Frey found some success with the single "Part Of Me, Part Of You" off the Thelma and Louise soundtrack. The single reached #55 on the charts.

THE MAMAS & THE PAPAS - 16 Of Their Greatest Hits (1986)

The Mamas & the Papas were an American/Canadian vocal group who came to prominence in the 1960s. The group recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968 with a short reunion in 1971, releasing five albums and 11 Top 40 hit singles. They have sold nearly 40 million records worldwide. Their signature sound was based on four-part male/female vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips, the band's songwriter, who managed to "leave the folk music behind" and blend his writing with the new "beat" sound in an unprecedented mode.

A great overview of the music from this group, one of the founders of the California sound in the late '60s. This is a good collection of their unforgettable electric folk-pop songs, including "Monday, Monday" and "California Dreamin'." (Originally released in August 1969 by Dunhill Records, 16 of Their Greatest Hits, it was reissued on CD by MCA Records in 1986.)

SCOTT McKENZIE - San Francisco (1999)

Scott McKenzie, the singer who performed "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)," which became a hit in 1967 during the city's "Summer of Love," has died. He was 73.

A statement on McKenzie's website says he died on Saturday in Los Angeles. McKenzie battled Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a disease that affects the nervous system, and had been in and out of the hospital since 2010. "San Francisco" was written by John Phillips, the leader of the 1960s group The Mamas and the Papas. But McKenzie sang it and it has stood as an anthem for the 1960s counterculture movement. McKenzie also co-wrote "Kokomo," a No. 1 hit for The Beach Boys in 1988, and toured with The Mamas and the Papas in the 1990s.

Compilation featuring 11 of the greatest hits by the '60s popstar who later co-wrote 'Kokomo' with the Beach Boys, including his top five smash 'San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)' and the top 30 'Like An Old Time Movie'.

JOANNE LeBLANC - Found & Lost (2012)

Joanne is a blues vocalist from the San Francisco Bay area. She grew up in the Boston area, arriving in California in the late 90s. She had no formal training in music or singing prior to 2007. Music however has always been in her family with her mother and grandmother both playing piano. Her debut CD introduces the sultry song stylings of Joanne LeBlanc. The clean vocals and unique phrasings bring a fresh new style to traditional blues rhythms. From upbeat to back alley her voice glides through the tight rhythm section like a bird on flight. Although a new comer to the recording industry, this CD will prove she is a force to reckon with. Joanne currently has her own band, "Joanne LeBlanc & the Fugitive Blues Band", made up of seasoned local musicians from the San Francisco area. Joanne and her band can be found playing clubs , local wineries and other venues around the San Francisco Bay area.

MICHAEL BURKS - Show of Strength (2012)

It's almost impossible to believe that this will be the last album from Michael Burks, the Iron Man of the blues. The final mixes had just been completed while he was on a European tour, and they were waiting for him at his home. He never got a chance to hear them; this gentle giant died suddenly of heart failure on May 6, 2012, at the age of 54. Michael was so proud of this album, his fourth for Alligator. He and I both believed that it would be the one that finally propelled him into the top echelon of blues musicians, where he certainly deserved to be. He had been poised for that position for almost a decade, earning ever-increasing fame with his blistering gigs and soulful recordings. He might have gotten there a lot sooner, but in his 20s he had chosen family over career. He had put away his guitar for years while he raised his beloved daughter Brittney in their southern Arkansas hometown of Camden. It was only when she was a teenager that he returned to his music and hit the long, dues-paying highway toward what passes for stardom in the blues world. From local and regional gigs to national and international club and festival stages, Michael's reputation and fan following was built one sweaty, hours-long gig at a time. - alligator.com

ALVIN LEE - I Hear You Rockin' (1994)

Alvin Lee is an English rock guitarist and singer. He began playing guitar at the age of 13, and with Leo Lyons formed the core of the band Ten Years After in 1960. Influenced by his parents' collection of jazz and blues records, it was the advent of rock and roll that sparked his interest, and guitarists such as Chuck Berry and Scotty Moore provided his inspiration.

While most gutiarists of his generation are either no longer with us, or a mere shadow of their former selves, Alvin Lee's gutiar playing is better than ever. From the opening licks of "Keep On Rockin" through a a great cover of the Beatles "I Want You (she's so Heavy)" This is the work of a true master in top form. "The Bluest Blues" features George Harrison on slide as well as one of the greatest gutiar solos of Alvin's career. Anyone who enjoys great gutiar playing (there seems to be very little of that these days) will love this album. Rock On Alvin! - amazon.com

JACKIE GREENE - Gone Wanderin' (2002)

When DIG Music owner, Marty DeAnda, happened into a local Sacramento open mic, he was clearly not expecting to hear anything but a number of marginally talented, local folk-rock musicians. The kid was wispy, brooding and quietly confident with his harmonica cage in place and acoustic guitar at the ready walking quickly toward the microphone and exploding into song, literally freezing the audience. A California native, Greene has honed his skills, diligently working the clubs and blues bars of the local terrain. His talent, poise and song-crafting ability belied his youth. Not only a gifted singer/songwriter, but an accomplished instrumentalist who has mastered the acoustic and electric guitar, harmonica, piano, organ and dobro, Jackie Greene's first release created a buzz. A slice of Americana with influences ranging from Dylan, Springsteen, Son House and Muddy Waters to Tom Waits and Howlin' Wolf. For those who enjoy well crafted, roots music, backed with unconventional wisdom and poetry, Gone Wanderin' demonstrates the capabilities and talent leading a new generation of musicians through the dusty back roads of American Roots Music to the promised land of new and innovative musical expression. - amazon.com

V.A. - Screaming and Crying (2012)

2012 three CD set containing 75 tracks from some of the greatest Blues guitarists of the 20th century. Compiled and annotated by Blues authority Neil Slaven, this set features 35 guitarists, ranging from legendary names like Lowell Fulson, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley and Freddy King, to less well known musicians equally appreciated by Blues connoisseurs.

The selection concentrates very much on post-war electric blues of the 50s, 60s and 70s and and all your favourites and major players - B.B., Albert and Freddie King, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Lowell Fulson, T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley - are here. We also get a good selection of 'second division' players including Johnny Guitar Watson, Guitar Slim, Eddie Taylor, Magic Sam, Little Milton, Johnny Copeland and Clarence Gatemouth Brown. There are also some slightly more obscure (overlooked?) players Tiny Grimes, Morris Pejoe, Hop Wilson, Rudy Green, Lafayette Thomas etc as well as a couple of tracks that I personally wouldn't have included on a 'guitar' compilation - such as Doctor Ross, who is an excellent one-man band and harmonica player but hardly an outstanding guitarist.

JOHN MELLENCAMP - Words & Music: John Mellencamp's Greatest Hits (2004)

John Mellencamp has been in need of a thorough, career-spanning compilation for a while, and Island/UTV's 2004 release Words & Music: John Mellencamp's Greatest Hits finally fills that gap. His previous hits collection, 1997's The Best That I Could Do, was too short, since he had more hits than could fit on a brief 14-track disc. Words & Music doesn't have the problem of brevity. Spanning 37 songs over two discs, this has nearly all of his charting hits. Radio hits like "Justice and Independence '85" and "Rooty Toot Toot" may be absent, but they're not missed, since all the big hits are here, including "Pink Houses," "Lonely Ol' Night," "Paper in Fire," "Authority Song," "Crumblin' Down," "Small Town," "Hurts So Good," and "Jack & Diane," among many others (including two solid new songs). The biggest complaint that could be lodged against this collection is that the sequencing is doggedly nonchronological, which may upset some listeners who would like to hear his career evolve, but this sequencing flows like a good concert and highlights the common threads in his music from 1978 to 2004. As such, it's not only a good collection of hits, but it's a good career summary and introduction, as well. [Initial pressings of Words & Music contained a bonus DVD containing videos for "Crumblin' Down," "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.," "Rain on the Scarecrow," "Check It Out (Live)," and "Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First)." - allmusic.com

ELVIS PRESLEY - Moody Blue (1977) [2000 Remastered and Expanded Edition]

The last Elvis Presley album released in the singer's lifetime, Moody Blue has a somewhat checkered history, especially among fans. Issued two months before Presley died, the album sold moderately well until Presley died -- then it soared up the charts to number three, as his most current album, and it ultimately sold two million copies. As to the music, the original ten-song album was a mixed bag of live recordings, interspersed with new studio work from the previous fall at Graceland. For all of its slapped-together feel, however, Moody Blue held up. The title song, authored by Mark James (who'd previously written "Suspicious Minds"), was just about as good a single as Elvis released in the 1970s, topping the country charts earlier in 1977; additionally, he did a superb reinterpretation of the George Jones hit "She Thinks I Still Care." "Little Darlin'" was almost more of a burlesque of the '50s rock & roll standard than a real performance, but it is more than made up for by the presence of the Johnny Ace classic "Pledging My Love," done with depth and sincerity. - allmusic.com

TRACKS:
01. Unchained Melody 02. If You Love Me (Let Me Know) 03. Little Darlin' 04. He'll Have To Go 05. Way Down 06. Pledging My Love 07. Moody Blue 08. She Thinks I Still Care 09. It's Easy For You 10. Hurt 11. Never Again 12. Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain 13. Danny Boy 14. The Last Farewell 15. For The Heart 16. Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall 17. Solitaire 18. Love Coming Down 19. I'll Never Fall In Love Again

August 16th 1977, Elvis Presley was found dead lying on the floor in his bathroom by his girlfriend Ginger Alden, he had been seated on the toilet reading 'The Scientific Search For Jesus'. He died of heart failure at the age of 42.

STEVE VAI - Real Illusions: Reflections (2005) & The Story of Light (2012)

Real Illusions: Reflections is the first studio album since Steve Vai's 1999 studio release The Ultra Zone. The album was released on February 22, 2005. It is the first piece of a three part concept album about a town visited by the godsent Pamposh and his construction of the Church. "Lotus Feet", the seventh song (which is to be the most emotional - see The Seventh Song), was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The song was recorded live in the Netherlands in 2004 during Vai's "The Aching Hunger Tour".
TRACKS:
01. Building The Church 02. Dying For Your Love 03. Glorious 04. K'm-Pee-Du-Wee 05. Firewall 06. Freak Show Excess 07. Lotus Feet 08. Yai Yai 09. Midway Creatures 10. I'm Your Secrets 11. Under It All

Steve Vai continues the convoluted narratives found on 2005’s Real Illusions: Reflection with his new concept album, The Story of Light— the second installment of a trilogy displaying Vai’s interest in New Age spirituality. As expected, this mostly instrumental album is filled with dense production, soaring multi-layered guitar tones, and tight harmonies. It does offer some nice surprises. Vai covers Blind Willie Johnson’s “John the Revelator” with a gospel choir and Beverly McClellan (a finalist on The Voice). He also duets with singer-songwriter Aimee Mann on “No More Amsterdam” to great effect. And Vai gets in his share of familiar arena-rock workouts like “Velorum” and “Gravity Storm,” and mellower compositions such as “Creamsickle Sunset.” It’s a beautifully expansive work that orbits within a galaxy we’ve visited before, and Vai is truly awesome throughout. “John the Revelator” and “Book of the Seven Seals” are interesting because who hasn’t wanted to hear Vai in the context of a gospel choir or black musical theater? Although his spiritual libretto will confuse some, his artistry will leave no nonbelievers. - premierguitar.com
TRACKS:
01. The Story Of Light 02. Velorum 03. John The Revelator 04. Book Of The Seven Seals 05. Creamsicle Sunset 06. Gravity Storm 07. Mullach A'tsi 08. The Moon And I 09. Weeping China Doll 10. Racing The World 11. No More Amsterdam 12. Sunshine Electric Raindrops

V.A. - Leo Blokhuis Presenteert: The Sound Of The South 1961-1976 - Where Soul And Country Meet (2011)

Southern soul is a type of soul music that emerged from the Southern United States. The music originated from a combination of styles, including blues (both 12 bar and jump), country, early rock and roll, and a strong gospel influence that emanated from the sounds of Southern African-American churches. The focus of the music was not on its lyrics, but on the "feel" or the groove. This rhythmic force made it a strong influence in the rise of funk music. Pioneers of southern soul include: Georgia natives Ray Charles and James Brown; Little Willie John, Bobby "Blue" Bland, New Orleans R&B artist Allen Toussaint; and Memphis DJ Rufus Thomas.

Southern soul was at its peak during the 1960s, when Memphis soul was created. The most significant contributors were Stax Records and their house band Booker T. & the MGs. The Stax label's most successful artist of the 1960s, Otis Redding, was influenced by fellow Georgia native Little Richard and the more cosmopolitan sounds of Mississippi-born Sam Cooke. Other Stax artists of note included Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd, Johnnie Taylor, The Staple Singers, and Isaac Hayes. Atlantic Records artists Sam & Dave's records were released on the Stax label and featured the MGs. Wilson Pickett launched his solo career through his collaboration with the Stax team. After Sam & Dave moved from Stax to Atlantic Records; Porter and his songwriting and production partner Isaac Hayes decided to put together a new vocal group of two men and two women. They recruited J. Blackfoot, together with Norman West, Anita Louis, and Shelbra Bennett, to form The Soul Children. Between 1968 and 1978, The Soul Children had 15 hits on the R&B chart, including three that crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, and recorded seven albums.

The Sound of the South consists of four wonderful CDs, with music from artists such as Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Percy Sledge, Al Green, Etta James, Tony Joe White, Joe South, Bobbie Gentry and Charlie Rich... - wikipedia

TONY JOE WHITE - Swamp Music
[4 CD Box Set] (2006)

This overstuffed box not only includes all three of Tony Joe White's initial albums for Monument, but adds dozens of extra songs and outtakes, most of which have never been heard before, and includes a fourth disc of previously unreleased live and studio tracks. It's a cornucopia of material, nearly all of it worth hearing, but due to its near obsessive vault clearing, the hefty list price, and its limited-edition status (only 5000 were pressed), it is clearly geared to the obsessive White enthusiast. Even though the singer/songwriter/guitarist was signed to Monument in 1966 (both sides of his rare debut single appear as extras on this set's version of Black and White), his first album was not recorded until 1969. By that time White had pretty much nailed the distinctive and ultimately trademark swamp sound that he mined for the rest of his career. The musky yet melodic songs, evocative lyrics and mid-tempo rhythms married to White's baritone voice reveled in his scrappy Louisiana roots. His first disc kicks off with "Willie and Laura Mae Jones," a steaming slice of the backwoods pop that, like most of his finest work, effortlessly combined blues, country and folk. While others had worked similar territory previously, in particular Bobbie Gentry (her "Ode to Billy Joe" was a major inspiration for White), he infused a rock and R&B sensibility that drove the music with gritty authenticity and his "whomper stomper" wah-wah pedal. Most impressive is the amount of material recorded during the period 1969-1971, the three years covered here. Of these 64 studio tracks and outtakes, all but approximately 20 are originals and most are well worth hearing. Billy Swan remained White's producer throughout these albums, and even though some critics find his strings and horns to be unnecessary embellishments, the sweetening seldom overwhelms the music. White rather reluctantly agrees in his interview available in the informative 36-page book that brings additional value to this compilation. The fourth disc features his entire seven-song performance at 1970s Isle of Wight concert. White is joined by Jeff Beck's drummer Cozy Powell, who he had first met earlier that day, and the duo burn through a sizzling set highlighted by a six-minute version of his biggest hit, "Polk Salad Annie." The compilers also unearth a previously unreleased, solo, ten track studio session recorded in Paris in March of 1969 where White covers Gentry's "Mississippi Delta" along with Bob Dylan, Don Covay and Joe Tex, along with a few originals. Not quite essential, it's still more than worthwhile and fans will enjoy experiencing White in his most stripped down format. It's a fitting coda for a long overdue and neatly packaged appreciation of Tony Joe White's significant influence on American roots music. - allmusic.com

MELANIE - Candles In The Rain + Leftover Wine (2007)

Considering how popular she was in the late '60s and early '70s, Melanie Safka's back catalog has been remarkably poorly served on CD, but this double-disc set from the British Edsel label brings two of her best known albums together in splendid form. 1970s Candles in the Rain featured the hit single "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" and was Melanie's first fully satisfying album; between her nakedly confessional original songs, her idiosyncratic covers (in particular "Ruby Tuesday") and Peter Schekeryk's lovely production and arrangements, it's where her eccentric charm really found its feet in the recording studio. Leftover Wine, released later the same year, is a very different kettle of fish. It's a live album recorded during a gig at Carnegie Hall, with just Melanie, her acoustic guitar, and a clearly devoted audience. While Melanie sounds passionate and fully engaged here, her habit of performing at a high emotional pitch is very much on display, and the stark force of this show is doubtless a bit much for listeners who aren't hardcore fans, though those who are will certainly delight in it (and vegetarians will find solace in "I Don't Eat Animals," as well as her tale of how a cow thanked her for writing it). The remastering of both albums is fine (though the remote recording on Leftover Wine leaves a bit to be desired), and each has been enriched with bonus tracks; Candles in the Rain features six tunes from rare film soundtracks, while Leftover Wine includes another hard-to-find track, "Stop! I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore." Alan Robinson's liner notes for the set are informative, and the lyrics for Candles in the Rain make the cut. - cduniverse.com

FRANCIS ROSSI

Francis Rossiis a British musician best known for being a co-founder of the English rock band Status Quo, i n which he sings lead vocals and plays lead guitar.

King of the Doghouse is the first solo album by Francis Rossi, best known as the front man in the English Rock band Status Quo, released in 1996. It was recorded between the release of the band's 1996 Don't Stop 30th anniversary covers album and the recording of their 1999 Under the Influence album. The album was commercially unsuccessful, but is now widely considered to have been overlooked at the time. The original version of Someone Show Me appeared (as Someone Show Me Home) on Status Quo's If You Can't Stand the Heat Album in 1978. The Fighter should have been the title track for Quo's 1988 album which ultimately was released under the title Ain't Complaining - without The Fighter. The 2006 remastered version of Ain't Complaining includes Quo's version as a bonus track.
TRACKS:
01. King Of The Doghouse 02. I Don't Know 03. Darling 04. Give Myself To Love 05. Isaac Ryan 06. Happy Town 07. Wherever You Go 08. Blue Water 09. Fighter 10. Someone Show Me

One Step at a Time is the only the second solo studio album from legendary Satus Quo front man Francis Rossi, and the first since 1996's King of the Dog House. There are differences, of course. There’s a teensy more country influence here, a little honky tonk barroom piano on ‘Caroline’, and a lot less crunch overall to the guitars. In fact at times rather than 80’s Quo, it all sounds a bit Dave Edmunds or one of those interminable mid 80’s English charity get togethers. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this album, but not a huge amount to engage or excite either – it’s like Easy Listening for classic rock fans.
TRACKS:
01. Sleeping On The Job 02. Tallulahs Waiting 03. Crazy For You 04. One Step 05. Here I Go 06. Faded Memory 07. Strike Like Lightning 08. Rolling Down The Road 09. Caroline 10. If You Believe

STATUS QUO - The Best Of (2011)

Status Quo are one of Britain's longest-lived bands, staying together for over 40 years. During much of that time, the band was only successful in the U.K., where it racked up a string of Top Ten singles across the decades. In America, the Quo were ignored after they abandoned psychedelia for heavy boogie rock in the early '70s. Before that, the band managed to reach number 12 in the U.S. with the psychedelic classic "Pictures of Matchstick Men" (a Top Ten hit in the U.K.). Following that single, the band suffered a lean period for the next few years, before the bandmembers decided to refashion themselves as a hard rock boogie band in 1970 with their Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon album. the Quo have basically recycled the same simple boogie on each successive album and single, yet their popularity has never waned in Britain. If anything, their very predictability has ensured the group a large following. The origins of Status Quo lie in a London-based beat group called the Spectres. Francis Rossi (vocals, guitar) and Alan Lancaster (bass) were the core members of the Spectres from their inception; within a few years, the band had added drummer John Coughlan and organist Roy Lynes. the Spectres released three unsuccessful singles before changing their style to psychedelia and adopting the name Traffic Jam and releasing the unsuccessful single "Almost But Not Quite There." After it flopped, the group added Rick Parfitt (guitar, vocals), formerly of the cabaret band the Highlights. When Parfitt joined the band in August 1967, the group again changed its name, this time to Status Quo....allmusic.com

UMPHREY'S McGEE - Mantis (2009) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Umphrey's McGee or UM is an American progressive rock jam band originally from South Bend, Indiana whose music is often referred to as "progressive improvisation", or "improg" (as per a progressive sampler released by the band in 2009).

Umphrey’s McGee is releasing their sixth studio album entitled Mantis to the world on January 20th, 2009. Perhaps not by coincidence, this is also inauguration day in America for a fellow Chicagoan which marks a progressive step forward in a new direction for our country. Thanks to the prudence of Umphrey’s McGee and the dedication to their fans, I received my copy of Mantis a few days before they hit store shelves. For their past studio efforts, Umphrey’s McGee molded and remolded tunes onstage while wide eyes watched and then they layed them down in the studio. But for Mantis the band moved in an entirely new direction. This album was chiseled out in the studio and offers 100% new material that fans had yet to hear. A few months before the release Umphrey’s McGee released some tracks to their myspace page and then offered a one of a kind pre-order package that was eaten up with overwhelming success.

HANK WILLIAMS, JR. - Old School New Rules (2012)

Randall Hank Williams, better known as Hank Williams, Jr. and Bocephus, is an American country singer-songwriter and musician. His musical style is often considered a blend of Southern rock, blues, and traditional country. He is the son of country music pioneer Hank Williams

In the liner notes it reads "Enjoy what may be my BEST WORK in YEARS." I think Hank is correct and one of the reasons why is because he wrote ten of the twelve songs. The two he didn't are "You Win Again" by Hank Sr and the other is "I Think I'll Just Stay Here And Drink" which he does a duet with Haggard on the album. Hank Jr has obviously put in a lot more effort on this album than his last few. "Takin' Back The Country" is just a killer opening track that includes vocals by Hank Sr as well and that is followed by another great song called "I'm Gonna Get Drunk and Play Hank Williams" which in my opinion could have been even greater if he didn't have Brad Paisley singing a few lines in the song. I can't stand these pop country acts of today, but it is still a good enough song I can tolerate a little Brad Paisley. The only song I don't care much for is "Stock Market Blues". I think his last few albums (Stormy, Almeria Club, I'm One Of You, and 127 Rose Ave) have all had some great songs on them, but included a lot of filler also. On this new one there really isn't any filler. - amazon.com

TRACKS:
01. Takin’ Back The Country 02. I'm Gonna Get Drunk And Play Hank Williams (with Brad Paisley) 03. Three Day Trip
04. Old School 05. We Don't Apologize For America 06. You Win Again 07. The Cow Turd Blues 08. Who's Taking Care Of Number One 09. That Ain't Good 10. Keep The Change 11. Stock Market Blues 12. I Think I'll Just Stay Here And Drink (with Merle Haggard)

05. Clearwater Rain

10. Unbearable Lightness of Being

Sidekicks is an album by Tom Fogerty, recorded with Randy Oda in 1988 (his partner in the rock band Ruby) and released posthumously in 1992 on Fantasy Records.

This was Tom's last album and it was his most experimental. He wasn't trying to duplicate the Creedence sound. He was trying to avoid the comparison with his brother John, which is impossible. Tom felt that John did the Creedence thing very well and wanted to try music that he felt from his heart. I think it is an excellent tribute to a man who had his own vision of music he wanted to create. Tom Fogerty we will miss you forever. Keep rockin!!! - amazon.com

ROY WOOD - Singles (1993)

Roy Wood, born in Birmingham, England, on November 8, 1946 (whose birth name is oftentimes incorrectly listed as Ulysses Adrian Wood due to a flip comment made in an interview), has long been regarded as one of the most important, if eccentric, rock musicians to have come out of that city, primarily for his role as the leader/co-founder of both the Move and the Electric Light Orchestra.

Mr Roy Wood has simply got to be the most underrated rock hero of all time. Period. Oh sure, there have been talented musicians and composers that are even more deeply forgotten and can only be 'unearthed' by pure accident. But it's the stunningly deep, incommeasurate gap between Wood's talent and importance and his modern-day stature that I'm talking about: Wood was, no doubt about it, one of the most brilliant musical geniuses of his epoch. A good comparison would be with David Bowie, whom Roy in his best days had beat on virtually every count, except for one - the ability to market himself. With all his talent, Roy never could make the real transgression to international pop star, or, rather, never really tried to, never toying with public tastes and often staying right out of touch with the times in order to preserve his artistic integrity. - starling.rinet.ru

ROBERT PLANT - Greatest Hits - 3 CD Box (2007)

Why is it that we’re still hanging on every word Robert Plant sings? Why are his recordings so eagerly anticipated over 40 years into his career in pop music? Two reasons stand out above all others. First: his voice. Surely the predominant element in reaching listeners, in making a connection with each individual, is a compelling voice. Plant’s vocals are compelling in spades: the tone, capable of everything from heartbreaking tenderness to a trademark edginess, the phrasing that lends a distinct urgency, and, perhaps most importantly, the sense of poetry, of mystery. The second reason for Plant’s enduring ability to draw us in is that through all of these years, he’s remained curious – really curious. Not content to reconstruct one of the most successful bands in the history of rock or even to stay with a particular sound for too long, Plant seems to have an unquenchable thirst for music that moves him – whether it is to be found in Northern Africa or deepest Appalachia.

Robert Plant made his first commercial recordings in 1966. In 1967, he had also formed a group called the Band of Joy, with drummer John Bonham. Soon, Bonham, Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, and bassist John Paul Jones assembled to become The New Yardbirds which became Led Zeppelin. The Led Zeppelin era ended in 1980 when John Bonham died. Since that time, Plant has put his wide-ranging musical fascination to good use on solo albums, with Jimmy Page, and in recordings with bands like The Honeydrippers, Priory of Brion, and Strange Sensation. His performances have reflected his embrace of West Coast psychedelic rock, roots blues, African music, and traditional folk.

V.A. - Twisted Willie (1996)

TWISTED WILLIE is a compilation of Willie Nelson songs performed by alternative-rock and country performers. Includes liner notes by The Reverend Horton Heat, Joe Nick Patoski, Randall Jamail, Krist Novoselic, Best Kissers In The World, Johnny Cash, Kim Thayil, Jerry Cantrell, Mark Lanegan, Supersuckers, Tenderloin, Dave Dederer, L7, Waylon Jennings, Jello Biafra, Gas Huffer, Kelley Deal, John Doe, Mike Moraskey and Jesse Dayton. Looking at Willie Nelson's Bud-&-BBQ pop-culture image, it's easy to forget the man's long and renowned history (a clean-shaven, suit-wearing Willie once had his own TV show), or his affect on all sorts of strong, independent-minded musicians (he was, after all, the original Outlaw). TWISTED WILLIE tips its hat to the Red-Headed Stranger by bringing out a diverse roster of country and rock's best in order to show his influences on both genres. The appearence of Nelson's country contemporaries, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash, seems obvious, considering the long-standing respect afforded him in the C&W community. More surprising is the musical back-up from such flannel-wearing luminaries as Nirvana's Krist Novoselic and Soundgarden's Kim Thayil, or the participation of former Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra. These unexpected twists more ably showcase Nelson's songwriting diversity and grit, and make TWISTED WILLIE a thoroughly worthwhile tribute album. - cduniverse.com

LOUISE HOFFSTEN - Blues (1998) & Looking for Mr. God (2012) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Louise Hoffsten is a Swedish song writer, musician and singer spanning several genres, notably rock, blues and pop. Louise was born in Linköping. Her father, Gunnar Hoffsten, was also a musician and played the trumpet in a jazz band.

From her first recordings, Hoffsten's music and stage act have weaved together rock, folk and blues influences, while sometimes moving into r'n'b and jazz territory, unified by her earthy, slightly operatic singing style and driving, lean grooves. Like many blues singers she plays the harmonica as well, a recurrent element in her songs; she is arguably the most well-known and recognized female blues singer of contemporary Sweden. She has built a wide following in her native land, has won several awards and currently resides in Stockholm. In 1996, Louise was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, but despite the complications and occasional depressions (mirrored in the book/record Blues), she continues to write, tour and perform music. - wikipedia

HUMBLE PIE - Street Rats (1975) [2007 Remastered]

Street Rats was the final studio album released in 1975 by the English rock group Humble Pie. Street Rats was created at the same time as Marriott was producing a solo album, and a collaboration album with Greg Ridley. He wasn't keen on producing another Pie album, and didn't want to tour the U.S. again, (they had been touring solidly for the past four years). While on the road, everything they wanted was paid for, but once they got back to England, four years and 21 tours later there was no money in the bank. Understandably, they were loathe to tour and promote another album. Steve Marriott: "We'd been on tour for about four years, and we were just very tired". But A&M as well as manager Dee Anthony were able to insist, Pie were contracted to do another tour, to do so without another album would have been an unwise move by the band. After the release of this album and their farewell tour, Humble Pie disbanded, citing musical differences. Marriott went on to produce his first solo album Marriott and promptly moved back to the U.K.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS - What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits (1974) [2011 MFSL]

The Doobies team up with the Memphis Horns for an even more Southern-flavored album than usual, although also a more uneven one. By this time, Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, and company had pretty well inherited the mantle and the core (and then some) of the audience left behind by Creedence Clearwater Revival and John Fogerty, with Johnston songs like "Pursuit on 53rd Street," "Down in the Track," and "Road Angel" recalling pieces like "Travelin' Band," while Simmons' "Black Water" (their first number one hit) evoked the softer side of the "swamp rock" popularized by CCR. Actually, in some respects, given the range of instruments employed here, including an autoharp (courtesy of Arlo Guthrie) and viola, the songs on the original LP's first side suffer somewhat from a sameness that makes What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits a little less interesting than the albums that preceded it. The original side two had a lot more variety, which is as good as any full album the band ever recorded: Simmons' "Tell Me What You Want (And I'll Give You What You Need)" and Johnston's "Another Park, Another Sunday," which both outdo the Eagles and Poco at their respective country-rock games (and keep a certain soulful edge, too), Simmons' lyrical, ethereal, slightly spacy "Daughters of the Sea," and the very spacy, shimmering instrumental "Flying Cloud" (written by bassist Tiran Porter). In all, despite the weakness of its original first side, it's got a lot more to offer than the single hit, and has at least six numbers (out of 12) that rate with the better album tracks the group has ever done. - allmusic.com

01. Song To See You Through 02. Spirit 03. Pursuit On 53rd St. 04. Black Water 05. Eyes Of Silver 06. Road Angel 07. You Just Can't Stop It 08. Tell Me What You Want (And I'll Give You What You Need) 09. Down In The Track 10. Another Park, Another Sunday 11. Daughters Of The Sea 12. Flying Cloud

COLOSSEUM - Those Who Are About To Die Salute You & Valentyne Suite (1969) & Live (1971)

This is one of the pivotal progressive bands that emerged in the second part of the Sixties. Unfortunalety the progressive world was more impressed by The NICE and KING CRIMSON, so in my opinion COLOSSEUM is a bit understimated progrock band. In '68 the founding members were drummer Jon Hiseman, tenor sax-player Dick Heckstall-Smith and bass player Tony Reeves, later joined by Dave Greenslade (keyboards), Dave Clempson (guitar), Chris Farlowe (vocals) and Mark Clark, he replaced Tony Reeves. COLOSSEUM made three studio albums: "Those Who Are To Die We Salute You" and "Valentyne Suite" (both from '69) and "Daughter Of Time" ('70). The music is a progressive mix of several styles (rock, jazz, blues) with lots of sensational solos and captivating interplay. In '71 the band released their highly acclaimed live album "Colosseum live", a proove of their great skills on stage but also showing that at some moments the compositions sounded a bit too stretched. After COLOSSEUM was disbanded in '71, most of these members formed or joined known groups like HUMBLE PIE (Clem Clempson), ATOMIC ROOSTER (Chris Farlowe), GREENSLADE (Dave Greenslade re-united with Tony Reeves) and COLOSSEUM II (founded by Jon Hiseman). In '91 the label Castle Communications released the comprehensive compilation CD entitled "The Time Machine".

The second album "The Valentyne Suite" is considired as their best. It sounds mature and varied with the epic titletrack as the highlight: it's build up around a mindblowing solo on the Hammond organ by Dave Greenslade and great guitarwork by James Litherland. And if you like brass (I don't!), Dick Heckstall-Smith delivers stunning tenor-saxophone work.

Those Who Are About To Die Salute You (1969): 01. Walking In The Park 02. Plenty Hard Luck 03. Mandarin 04. Debut 05. Beware The Ides Of March 06. The Road She Walked Before 07. Backwater Blues 08. Those About To Die

PINK FLOYD - Hamilton '75 Master Reel (1975)

Pink Floyd open with two new songs (works in progress) that will end up on their next album, Animals. So you have two songs from Animals, most of the Wish You Were Here album, Dark Side, and Echoes. That’s too cool to pass up. Even if you’re a casual Floyd fan, this show will make you happy. It has, basically, every Floyd song the average dude knows (not counting The Wall) in one concert. This show is from 6/28/75 in Hamilton, Ontario during their Wish You Were Here Tour. The sound quality is EX. It's an incredible audience recording that is virtually indistinguishable from a professional record. The stereo soundstage is wide and well defined. Aside from the sound quality, another reason I am sharing this show is the setlist. You get the Animals album in the form of "Raving and Drooling" and "You Gotta Be Crazy", almost all of Wish You Were Here in "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and "Have A Cigar", all of The Dark Side of the Moon, and half of Meddle with the "Echoes" encore. What more could you ask for? And the performance is top-notch. Gilmour's guitar work is incredible. The tone and sound quality overall is simply outstanding

Recorded Live at Ivor Wynne Stadium, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada - June 28, 1975.

THE BAND - Rock Of Ages (1972) [Japan Remaster 2004]

The last four nights of 1971 witnessed a series of soulful performances by The Band at New York's Academy Of Music, the highlights of which were captured on "Rock Of Ages," an exceptionally unadulterated live recording. While many performers would come to rely on an entire orchestra in an attempt to make their live albums more appealing, The Band succeeded with only a modest horn section.
It sure isn't the sound quality that makes this album, but it's definitely the sincerity of every note. After that year's "Cahoots" was unjustly regarded as a disappointment, The Band reminded everyone why they could call themselves THE Band in the first place. They troop through their cannon of work with emotion and integrity. Though 'The Shape I'm In' may lack the grit of the studio version, and 'The Weight' may not be as well tuned as its counterpart, it is more than made up for by the loyally true feeling that is generated throughout "Rock Of Ages." The horns add a whole new musical layer to many songs; they give more sadness or emotion to the likes of 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,' and flavor on songs like 'Chest Fever;' the latter boasts keyboardist Garth Hudson's exciting, brilliant organ intro 'The Genetic Method,' which contains as many twists as there are crumbs in Hudson's beard. However, on some songs, the horns don't work so well and appear to overbearing. Meanwhile, 'Get Up Jake' is a fantastic track that was formerly only a B-side, while '(I Don't Want To) Hang Up My Rock 'n' Roll Shoes' preludes their next project, "Moondog Matinee."

Perfectly remastered, this edition of "Rock Of Ages" contains a bonus disc of unreleased cuts from the concert, including the essential hymnal 'I Shall Be Released' and four songs featuring a cameo by Bob Dylan. It's a mystery why these tracks were not included on the original release, except for "Like A Rolling Stone" in which it appears Dylan forgets some of his lyrics, mumbling inaudibly through parts of the song (or is it just bad sound?). But despite its flaws, this is a potent and strong concert recording. "The Last Waltz" documented their end--"Rock Of Ages" is the essence of their musical spirit. - amazon.com

PAUL REDDICK - Wishbone (2012)

He's a well-respected artist within the Canadian blues community, and British mag Mojo is a fan, but Toronto, ON songsmith Reddick deserves far greater recognition. This is the fourth solo album he's recorded since the demise of earlier band the Sidemen, and it maintains the high standards of Villanelle and Sugarbird. Reddick isn't afraid to mix in rock and roots elements in a take on the blues that sounds simultaneously retro and fresh, while the production work of Colin Cripps keeps things coherent. Cripps and fellow guitarist Kyle Ferguson co-wrote many of the tunes with Reddick, while Tom Wilson collaborated on "Devil's Load." There's a ZZ Top feel to the raunchy "Whiskey is the Life of a Man" and "I Ain't Sentimental" has a Keith Richards-style groove and wailing female backing vocals from Samantha Martin. Reddick's delivery on some cuts sests the laidback vibe of Clapton, while tender closing ballad "1000 Years" features his best vocal performance. There are recurring characters, like Honey Babe and Ruby, but you don't need to pick up on any narrative threads to enjoy the album. Reddick's expressiveness as a harmonica player beefs up the sound and adds a moody, noir-esque atmosphere. This is an early candidate for Canadian blues album of the year.

GUITAR MIKEY AND THE REAL THING - Out Of The Box (2012)

The singular blues odyssey of Mike McMillan has taken him from his native Canada to Clarksdale, Mississippi, with extended residencies in Chicago and Boston nestled beton.comween. In 1985, it also gave him a distinctive stage moniker, one he retains to this day. Since then, Guitar Mikey and the Real Thing have steadily gained renown for their distinctive high-energy sound. ''I would describe it as hybrid blues, or blues-rock,'' says Mikey. ''I'm definitely a blues guitar player, I definitely write some blues, but not everything I do is strictly blues. Some of it's got a rockier edge, some of it's got a funkier edge.'' Mikey's ferocious axe (he's fiery on slide as well as single-string leads) and impassioned vocals have never been captured more effectively on record than on this self-produced collection, cut in Clarksdale with an impressive array of musical cohorts. - amaz

JO ANN KELLY - Key To The Highway: Rare & Unissued Recordings 1968 - 1974 (1999) & Talkin' Low: Rare & Unissued Recordings 1966 - 1988, Volume 2 (2000)

Jo Ann Kelly (1944 — 1990) was an English blues singer and guitarist. "To many American performers", an obituarist wrote, "Jo Ann Kelly was the only British singer to earn their respect for her development of what they would be justified in thinking as 'their' genre. Kelly had a voice far bigger than her slight frame would sest; with a rich, deep, tonal quality that could easily have come from Dinah Washington or Sister Rosetta Tharpe. After establishing a musical partnership with the British blues musician Tony McPhee, Kelly appeared on two McPhee compiled albums for Liberty Records, Me and the Devil (1968) and I Asked for Water, She Gave Me Gasoline (1969). She also appeared on two John Dummer Band albums John Dummer Blues Band (1969) and Oobleedoobleejubilee (1973). At the end of the 1960s, with an album on a major record label in the United States, it seemed that she might be spirited away there and moulded into another Janis Joplin. Both Johnny Winter and Canned Heat tried to recruit Kelly into their ranks. However, her allegiance was to the United Kingdom and the nightclub scene, although, the 1970s and 1980s would fail to support her financially and so she took to the European circuit, latterly with the guitarist Pete Emery or in bands. Indeed, in the early 1980s, she was a member of the Terry Smith Blues Band.

In 1988, Kelly began to suffer from headaches. In 1989 she had an operation to remove a malignant brain tumour. She died in October 1990, at the age of 46.

BOZ SCAGGS - Boz Scaggs (1969)

In 1969, Boz Scaggs debut release on Atlantic Records was a stunning classic recording that has earned its place in the history of rock, blues and popular music. Celebrating its four decade birthday, Friday Music has located the original session tapes, which havent been available since the early seventies, and have spared no expense with the mastering process to deliver what we feel is the definitive audiophile reissue of the year! The nine songs that make this incredible album such a winner has a lot to do with the musicianship, writing skills, and the great voice of Boz Scaggs . Fans remember exciting blues oriented tracks like Im Easy and I'll Be Long Gone as some of the most important songs of this much loved platter. With the famous Muscle Shoals studio sound, along with some of the finest musicians in the business, Boz and company delivered nine tracks of whack, that have stood the test of time, including one of his most famous works Loan Me A Dime, which hands down opened the doors for a lot of the cross over blues music that is being recorded today. This much emulated and loved work as well as the other great songs from the album feature the sorely missed guitar styling of the late Duane Allman. For the first edition run of this masterwork, Friday Music is including a textured gatefold cover, along with the original graphics, poly lined protective album sleeve, and poly vinyl cover for the album cover. - amazon.com

V.A. - Pure Moods, Vol. 1 - 4 (1994 - 2002)

Volume I
From the exotic world-music flavor of Enigma's "Return to Innocence" to Enya's weightless, ethereal "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)," to the deeply moving "Theme From 'The Mission'" by Ennio Morricone, the songs on this compilation are mostly mood-enhancing instrumentals that complement each other perfectly. With it's rich variety of material, PURE MOODS is the perfect album for those without multiple cd changers. It touches on the lightly jazzy (David A. Stewart's "Lily Was Here"), the strangely surreal (Angelo Badalamenti's "The Theme From Twin Peaks-Fire Walk With Me"), and the spiritual (Sacred Spirits' "Yeha-Noha [Wishes of Happiness & Prosperity]"). Artfully arranged and thoughtfully compiled, PURE MOODS is a deeply satisfying collection of atmospheric music. - amazon.com

Lily Was Here - David A. Stewart

Volume II
The first Pure Moods collection of dreamy, new age-identified tunes was such a huge success that it demanded a successor. Hence, Pure Moods II, which picks up where the first volume left off, offering delicate, highly atmospheric pop that crosses over into the Contemporary Instrumental sound without ever getting too Windham Hill. Vangelis' uplifting "Chariots of Fire" is here, as is Loreena McKennitt's neo-Celtic "The Mummer's Dance," but there are some unexpected entries too. Pure Moods II reaches back to the '80s for the idyllic pop of the Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town" and even checks in with the British trip-hop scene, offering Massive Attack's "Teardrop." A consistent but varied effort, Pure Moods II may surprise you. Producers include: Loreena McKennitt, Yanni, Vangelis, Tommy LiPuma, Craig Armstrong. Compilation producer: Ashley Abram. Lyricists: David Fairstein; Michael Crétu . Illustrator: Jo Cheese. Arrangers: Claus Ogerman; Massive Attack; Neil Davidge. - cduniverse.com
TRACKS:
01. The Mummers' Dance - Loreena McKennitt 02. Montezuma - Cusco 03. The Cradlesong (DaWa) (remix) - Sacred Spirit 04. Nightingale - Yanni 05. Life in a Northern Town - Dream Academy 06. The Mystic's Dream" - Loreena McKennitt

Volume III
From the soft focus, new age watercolors of Suzanne Ciani and David Lanz to the electronic oriented sound of Moby and trip-hoppers Mono, the overriding theme is one of lush tranquility. PURE MOODS III manages the difficult trick of maintaining . The PURE MOODS compilation series is the place where ambient music, new age, and what can only be called "contemporary instrumental" intersect. While this collection moves through a widely varied batch of styles and artists (who would've imagined a paradigm that embraces Enya, Moby, and Blue Man Group?), the common theme is one of tranquil moods expressed through soft, flowing sounds. - cduniverse.com
TRACKS:
01. Only If - Enya 02. Porcelain - Moby 03. Life in Mono - Mono 04. Games Without Frontiers - Peter Gabriel (Massive/DB mix) 05. Cristofori's Dream - David Lanz 06. Land of Anaka - Geoffrey Oryema/Brian Eno 07. Dela Dela - Sacred Spirit 08. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - Ryuichi Sakamoto 09. Velocity of Love, The - Suzanne Ciani 10. Deliver Me - Sarah Brightman

Volume IV
More potpourri than unified high concept, the fourth installment in the Pure Moods series nevertheless provides an interesting collage of acts associated with techno, ambient, alt-pop, and New Age genres. For some listeners, that means the transition from the rhythmic mystical-ethereal vibe of the first four tracks (from Enigma, Mythos, Delerium, and Sarah McLachlan and a splendid piece from Balligomingo) to a trilogy from New Age romanticists ( Secret Garden, Yanni, and pianist Jim Brickman) may seem a little disjointed. Ditto for the segue from George Winston's impressionistic 1980 solo piano piece, "Sea," to a Steve Reich-like minisymphony from Moby). And the concluding Afro-Celt Sound System track, a spirited, mandolin-driven piece with Peter Gabriel on vocals, is a stylistic island unto itself. Still, most fans of easy-listening contemporary music (particularly the adventurous ones) should find this an agreeable assortment of music from artists who infuse their craft with stronger-than-usual spiritual and emotional subtexts.
TRACKS:
01. November - Mythos 02. Purify - Balligomingo 03. Shadows In Silence - Enigma 04. Silence - Delerium w/Sarah McLachlan 05. Songs From A Secret Garden - Secret Garden 06. One Man's Dream - Yanni 07. Devotion - Jim Brickman 08. Fields Of Gold - Eva Cassidy 09. Garden of Eden - Govi 10. Theme From Amelie 11. The Sea - George Winston 12. God Moving Over The Face Of The Water - Moby 13. Main Title (Theme from Chocolat) 14. Angel - Sarah McLachlan 15. She Moves Through The Fair - B-Tribe 16. This Love - Craig Armstrong 17. River of Stars - Paul Schwartz 18. PAT TRAVERS - Blues On Fire (2012) thumbup

Legendary guitarist Pat Travers, an influence on numerous musicians including Kirk Hammett of Metallica, proudly presents this electrifying new album of blues recordings featuring songs that date back to the 1920s! Features full on classic rock production and heavy guitar versions of Blind Blake s Black Dog Blues, Blind Willie Johnson s Nobody s Fault But Mine, Son House s Death Letter plus more blues classics originally made famous by Bessie Smith, Tampa Red, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and more!

Having come off an exhausting European tour, Travers sat back and took a little journey back to his roots; listening to the delta blues and knew the time was right to showcase these early twentieth century legendary artists, which include Blind Willie Johnson, Bessie Smith, Henry Thomas and Son House. He handpicked the twelve songs that appear on Blues on Fire. Travers’ hard hitting blues style can be heard with the first note of the album in Blind Blake’s Black Dog Blues. You feel the energy that Travers gives as he brings these songs to life, delivering his blend of rough vocals and emotional style that has many current metal guitar players including Metallica’s Kirk Hammet, listing Travers as one of their influences. Travers produced and performed all the vocals, guitar and bass lines for Blues on Fire, with Doug Bare on the piano/organ, Carl Cleaver on piano and Sean Shannon on the drums. The classic blues steel guitar sound can be heard perfectly on the tracks Nobody’s Fault But Mine and Back Water Blues. The delta blues sound is full of emotion and lyrical poetry that can be experienced through Bulldozer Blues and Dark Night Blues, two tracks that stand out as the highlights.

TRACKS:
01. Black Dog Blues 02. Nobody's Fault But Mine 03. Back Water Blues 04. Meat Shakin' Woman 05. Easy Rider Blues 06. Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out 07. Bulldozer Blues 08. You Can't Get That Stuff No More 09. Dark Night Blues 10. Rock Island Blues 11. Jailhouse Blues 12. Death Letter
