Kaki King (b. Katherine Elizabeth King) is an American guitarist and composer. King is known for her percussive and jazz-tinged melodies, energetic live shows, use of multiple tunings on acoustic and lap steel guitar, and her diverse range in different genres.

In addition to a 10-year career that includes five LP and two EP albums, King has also scored music for television and film. PRETTY THINGS & YARDBIRD BLUES BAND - The Chicago Blues Tapes 1991 (1991)
This set, attributed to the Pretty Things-Yardbird Blues Band, is really more Pretty Things (thanks to strong vocal work by Phil May and some striking lead guitar from Dick Taylor, the two cornerstones of the Pretty Things) than the Yardbirds (although former Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty is on hand), and it doesn’t add much to the legacy of either band, really, although it is a strikingly good outing. The tracks collected here originated when May and Taylor teamed up with McCarty and guitarist and blue harpist Studebaker John and bassist Richard Hite for two George Paulus-produced albums recorded in Chicago in 1991. The sound is very good, and these weren’t throwaway sessions, with the blended band tackling classic songs like “Spoonful,” “You Can’t Judge a Book by the Cover,” “Time Is on My Side” (Taylor was briefly a guitarist for the Rolling Stones early in that group’s career), “Ain’t Got You,” and “Chain of Fools,” among others. Again, nothing here adds much to the legacy of either the Pretty Things or the Yardbirds, but fans of either or both bands will undoubtedly love this interesting curio.

THE BYRDS - Fifth Dimension (1966)
Fifth Dimension is the third album by the American rock band The Byrds and was released in July 1966 on Columbia Records (see 1966 in music). Most of the album was recorded following the February 1966 departure of the band's principal songwriter Gene Clark. In an attempt to compensate for Clark's absence, guitarists Jim McGuinn and David Crosby stepped into the breach and increased their songwriting output. In spite of this, the loss of Clark resulted in an uneven album that included a total of four cover versions and an instrumental. However, the album is notable for being the first by The Byrds not to include any songs written by Bob Dylan, whose material had previously been a mainstay of the band's repertoire. The album peaked at #24 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and reached #27 on the UK Albums Chart. Two preceding singles, "Eight Miles High" and "5D (Fifth Dimension)", were included on the album, with the former just missing the Top 10 of the Billboard singles chart. Additionally, a third single taken from the album, "Mr. Spaceman", managed to reach the U.S. Top 40. Upon release, Fifth Dimension was widely regarded as the band's most experimental album to date and is today considered influential in originating the musical genre of psychedelic rock.

THE BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND - The Resurrection Of Pigboy Crabshaw (1967)
The Butterfield Blues Band's lead guitarist and star player Mike Bloomfield departed in 1967, tired of the group's rigorous touring schedule and wanting to start his own band. He relocated to San Francisco, and formed The Electric Flag. This left Elvin Bishop as the Butterfield Band's only guitarist. He rose to the task admirably, as he had always been a first-class blues player, but being in a band alongside Bloomfield had forced him (as it would have done to almost anyone) into the role of 'second guitarist'. But now he was able to show what he was really made of. Bassist Jerome Arnold and drummer Billy Davenport had also left, so The Resurrection Of Pigboy Crabshaw was the band's first album with the revised line-up of Paul Butterfield (vocals/harmonica), Elvin Bishop (guitar), Mark Naftalin (keyboards), Bugsy Maugh (bass/vocals) and Phil Wilson (drums). The band also added a three-piece horn section consisting of Gene Dinwiddie (ternor sax), David Sanborn (alto sax) and Keith Johnson (trumpet). With its extensive use of the horn section, the new album moved ever-so-slightly away from pure blues and towards an R&B / soul sound, most notable on the opening track, a cover of the Motown tune "One More Heartache" (written by The Miracles, first recorded by Marvin Gaye). They were still undoubtedly a blues band, but were clearly beginning to expand beyond the confines of the genre.

07. One Day At A Time

As a member of the Eagles, Joe Walsh brought his rock ‘n’ roll sensibilities and impeccable guitar work to the band’s already lush sounds when he replaced guitarist Bernie Leadon in 1975. As the main man in the James Gang and as a solo artist, Walsh has enjoyed a handful of serious hits, all of which are now in perennial rotation on classic rock radio. With 20 years passed since his last solo effort, Walsh returns with Analog Man.
Analog Man kicks off with proclamations about how the new-fangled digital world vexes the aging rocker. The irony is that, as Walsh is singing about how he’s “still analog” and lamenting the fact that “some ten-year-old smart ass” has to guide him through trouble-shooting his computer issues, the album was recorded in the digital medium. Luckily, the sound doesn’t suffer for the irony, and the record shows off a much more polished effort than we’ve ever seen from Walsh, Eagles work aside. The serious message about the nature of the “digital world” and its effects on youth are the first of many surprisingly serious points made on the clown prince of rock’s big return to form.
Producer Jeff Lynne’s fingerprints are all over Analog Man, and his production aesthetic on a track like “Wrecking Ball” (not to be confused with The Boss) hints at Lynne’s past work, specifically his success with Tom Petty’s 1989 classic solo effort, Full Moon Fever. While we may not have expected Walsh to join the Nashville via Liverpool sect, Mr. Walsh’s alleged nickname “Lumpy Wilbury” feels quite appropriate after a few spins of Analog Man.

ELVIS PRESLEY - Elvis Country: I'm 10,000 Years Old (1971) [Legacy Edition, 2012]
In January 1971, Elvis was well and truly back and on top of his game. During 1970, he chalked up no less than 4 Platinum and 3 Gold album awards and 5 Gold singles. As if this sales achievement wasn't enough, on January 16, he was given the award as one of the "Top Ten Young Men of The Year" by the United States Jaycees. His new album Elvis Country released that same month received critical acclaim. In an outstanding review for Rolling Stone, biographer Peter Guralnick said: "... Elvis Presley has come out with a record which gives us some of the very finest and most affecting music since he first recorded for Sun almost 17 years ago."
Elvis Country is, obviously, a return to roots. But it's the singing, the passion and engagement most of all which mark this album as something truly exceptional. All the
familiar virtues are there. The intensity. That peculiar combination of hypertension and soul. There is even, for those who care to recall, a frenzied recollection of what the rock era once was, as Elvis takes on Jerry Lee Lewis' masterful "Whole Lot-ta Shakin' Goin' On" and comes out relatively unscathed. He has never sung better. Elvis Country received an RIAA Gold certification and spent 21 weeks on the Billboard album chart. The single "I Really Don t Want To Know" c/w "There Goes My Everything" reached #9 and #21 on the Billboard country and pop charts respectively. The June 1971 follow-up studio album Love Letters From Elvis also contains songs recorded during the historic four-day Nashville session that spawned Elvis Country, including "Got My Mojo Working" and "Life" (Billboard #53).
This new 2-CD Legacy Edition features both these classic original albums plus 6 bonus tracks, including the full version of "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago," the studio jam "A Hundred Years From Now" and the single "Where Did They Go, Lord" c/w "Rags To Riches," which reached #33 on the Billboard chart. - amazon.com

JOHN KAY - Heretics & Privateers (2001)
Heretics & Privateers is a country-blues album by German-Canadian musician John Kay, released on Cannonball Records in 2001. It has since been reissued on Crosscut Records and most recently on Rainman Records. John Kay was well-known as Steppenwolf lead singer, back in the sixties. This album mixes pure acoustic tunes with others that sound more like Steppenwolf. The lyrics follow mostly a "critical social" style.
John Kay, leader of one of rock's most venerable bands, Steppenwolf, has returned to the folk/blues roots of his troubador days with the release of his fourth solo recording "Heretics and Privateers". The musical subtlety and emotional depth of the albums 12 composistions feature provacative lyrics which offer a gritty view of contemporary life, surveying the human toll of institutional callousness with unflinching clarity. Kay's lyrics aren't the gripes of a chronic malcontect but the deeply felt observations of a first-generation American whose appreciation of his adopted country's promise and potential is balanced by an awareness of it's lapses. On both the album's title track, which pays tribute to those among us who reject society's proscribed roles in favor of more humane value systems, and the spare, acoustic closing track "Te Back Page" which celebrate those whose everyday acts of kindness demonstate the human rac's capacity for selflessness, Kay's ultimate sense of hope and faith in humanity shines through.

RAY WYLIE HUBBARD - A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint There is no C) (2010) & The Grifter's Hymnal (2012)
Ray Wylie Hubbard is a Texas Country singer and songwriter. During his time in New Mexico, Hubbard wrote "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother", made famous by Jerry Jeff Walker's 1973 recording. Hubbard recorded for various labels but strled with sales; his mix of country, folk and blues elements didn’t find an audience. After leaving the scene and strling with personal problems, he returned to recording with Lost Train of Thought in 1992 and Loco Gringo's Lament in 1994. Today Ray Wylie Hubbard is an elder statesman of the Texas music scene. From New Braunfels, Texas, Hubbard hosts a Tuesday night radio show called "Roots & Branches". This program promotes new and established Americana artists. Like some other performers in his genre, he is perhaps as popular in Europe as in the US—Hubbard has been invited by record companies in the Netherlands to produce albums. His most recent recordings have been produced by Texas guitarist Gurf Morlix.

MERRY CLAYTON
Merry Clayton is an American soul and gospel singer (both solo and back-up), and an actress. She has provided a number of back-up vocal tracks to songs recorded by major performing artists during the 1960s, most notably with her duet with Mick Jagger on The Rolling Stones song "Gimme Shelter".
Clayton began her recording career in 1962 at the age of fourteen, singing "Who Can I Count On? (When I Can't Count On You)" as a duet with Bobby Darin on his album "You're The Reason I'm Living". A year later, she recorded the first version of "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)", although it was Betty Everett's version of the same year that reached the top 10 in the Billboard Hot 100. Her early career included performances with artists including Ray Charles (as one of The Raelettes), Pearl Bailey, Phil Ochs, and Burt Bacharach. (She is often credited as having recorded with Elvis Presley but her name does not appear in Elvis sessionographies.) In 1971 she co-wrote the song "Sho' Nuff", which is about her mother. She contributed vocals to Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg's 1968 film Performance.

Clayton also sang backup on several tracks from Neil Young's debut album Neil Young, originally released in 1968. She is best known for her 1969 performance in a duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones song "Gimme Shelter". (Originally, the Stones had intended to have Bonnie Bramlett sing, but Bramlett was not available, possibly because of illness.) Clayton also sang backing vocals on Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama". Also, early in her career, Clayton sang backup vocals for Tom Jones, Joe Cocker ("Feelin' Alright") and Carole King. She also originated the role of the Acid Queen in the original 1972 London production of The Who's Tommy.

CARL WILSON
Carl Wilson recorded and released two solo albums in the early '80s, but he is best known as a founding member of the Beach Boys, with whom he sang and played lead guitar. He largely took over supervision of the band after his oldest brother, Brian Wilson, relinquished leadership of the Beach Boys due to psychological problems in the mid-'60s; at that time, Carl was only in his late teens. He continued to guide the group from the late '60s to his death three decades later, serving as the glue that held together the Beach Boys' often warring factions.

1981 - Carl Wilson
"Carl Wilson" is the self-titled debut solo album of The Beach Boys band member, Carl Wilson. The youngest of the three Wilson brothers in the band, Carl Wilson was reportedly at this time unhappy with the progress being made by The Beach Boys creatively. So Carl, just as his brother Dennis had a few years earlier, signed a contract with James William Guercio's CBS-distributed Caribou Records. The album was released on March 27, 1981 and peaked at number 185 on the Billboard 200. Of the eight tracks on the album, seven of them are written by Carl Wilson and Myrna Smith, who was the wife of Carl's then manager Jerry Schilling, with track six being written by Carl, Myrna and Michael Sun.

1983 - Youngblood
Youngblood , originally released by Caribou/Epic Records in 1983, was the second solo album from legendary Beach Boys vocalist Carl Wilson. In contrast to the bright pop and airy ballads with which Wilson made his reputation in the Beach Boys, Youngblood bursts from the speakers with a pair of tough rockers powered by the guitar of album producer Jeff Skunk Baxter (Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers). Youngblood continues with dramatic balladry ( Givin' You Up, whose lyric may be seen as a commentary on the state of the Beach Boys at the time; One More Night Alone, penned by Wilson's then brother-in-law Billy Hinsche who also wrote new liner notes for this reissue) and finds space for some good old fashioned rock & roll, both from Wilson's own pen and those of John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival) and John Hall (Orleans). Although commercially unsuccessful upon release, demand for Carl Wilson's solo material has increased dramatically since his tragic death in 1998. Youngblood only ever saw release on CD in a very limited Japanese pressing; this Iconoclassic reissue - remastered from the original master tapes - marks the first wide release of Carl Wilson's solo music on CD. - amazon.com

HEART - Strange Euphoria (2012)
Back when Heart released their first album (Dreamboat Annie) in 1976, having two females fronting a rock band was something of a novelty. The fact that sisters Nancy and Ann Wilson were young and attractive might have overshadowed their music, but the fact that they were gifted musicians, songwriters and vocalists, backed by a band of equally talented musicians, quickly stood out. Although they haven't been inclined to play the popular game of courting radio airplay, more than half of their studio albums have charted at #1. Now, 36 years after their debut, their albums and concerts are still in high demand.
Epic Records and Legacy Recordings proudly announce the release of Strange Euphoria, the first definitive career-spanning, multi-label boxed set retrospective chronicling the seminal American rock band Heart, personally curated by Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson.

MTV: The Unplu gged Collection Vol.01 features acoustic versions of songs recorded for the television series "MTV Unpled."Recorded between 1990 and 1994. Stevie Ray Vaughan proves a good choice to introduce this MTV UNPLU GGED back-to-basics, acoustic-based compilation. A man and his talent, spare and unforgiving, with no accoutrements to distract from the essence of his blues-guitar classic "Pride And Joy." Eric Clapton, who catapulted the television series into a different stratosphere with his award-winning performance, is also represented with his Bo Diddley cover "Before You Accuse Me."A proven forum for the blues, unpled also gives pop vocalists (k.d. lang, Don Henley, and the remarkable Annie Lennox, who plumbs emotional depths with a mesmerizing "Why") handsome opportunities to show off. It allows artsy folkies (R.E.M. and 10,000 Maniacs) to reinvent their canvases, while letting rockers Soul Asylum, Neil Young and Lenny Kravitz provide insights into what their songs sounded like before they got into the studio. Superstar studio creatures (Paul Simon, Elton John, Rod Stewart) benefit most from the stripped-down showcase. Paul McCartney screws up the Beatles' classic "We Can Work It Out," leaving it rough-edged, yet perfect. This album provides the opportunity to dissect these artists' craft. You hear every unadorned flaw, the way music was supposed to be played: from the heart and soul, not from the corporate headquarters. The Unpled Collection is a wonderful document of where music has come from, and where we have taken it.

V.A. - FM: The Original Movie Soundtrack (1978)
"FM" is the original soundtrack to the 1978 film "FM". The soundtrack won the 1979 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
The story unfolds across a background of concerts, broadcast music, appearances by various rock stars, and public appearances by the station DJs. A minor sub-theme to the film is the competition between QSKY and another area radio station. The major event of that sub-theme is when Jeff arranges to broadcast a live concert by Linda Ronstadt that is being sponsored by the competitor's radio station. Rolling Stone magazine considered the music heavily biased towards musicians who had been managed by Irving Azoff, who was head of MCA Records at the time. Some reference books claim that the TV sitcom "WKRP in Cincinnati" was based on "FM". However, "WKRP" series creator Hugh Wilson asserts that the sitcom was already in development when the film came out. He also states that he was "scared to death" when the film came out, afraid that it would eclipse the CBS show, which made its debut in September of 1978. Wilson was relieved when "FM" came and went from theaters quickly. - wikipedia

SUZI QUATRO - Suzi Quatro (1973) [2011 7T's Records, Remastered]
Susan Kay "Suzi" Quatro is a British-based American singer-songwriter, bass guitar player, and actor. She is the first female bass player to become a major rock star — this success in the 1970s empowered women (at a time when rock was dominated by men). In the 1970s Quatro scored a string of hit singles that initially found greater success in Europe and Australia than in her homeland. But, following a recurring role as a female bass player on the popular American sitcom Happy Days, her duet "Stumblin' In" with Chris Norman reached number 4 in the USA. Between 1973 and 1980 Quatro was awarded six Bravo Ottos. In 2010 she was voted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends online Hall of Fame. She continues to create new albums, to perform, and to research/present new radio programmes.

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL - Chronicle: Vol.01 & Vol.02 (1976/1986)
Creedence Clearwater Revival, frequently referred to as CCR or simply Creedence, was an American roots rock band, fronted by John Fogerty.
The band started out as The Blue Velvets, formed by John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, and Stu Cook in El Cerrito, California, United States in the late 1950s. They were an instrumental trio, however during the early ’60s they began backing Tom Fogerty, John’s older brother, for school dances at El Cerrito High School, on fraternity house gigs and in the recording studio. By the mid 1960s, the band signed a contract with Fantasy Records which was a local label based in San Francisco at that time. They were attracted to the label because Fantasy had released a national hit by Vince Guaraldi, “Cast Your Fate To The Wind”. Fantasy officials changed the group’s name to The Golliwogs, an apparent reference to a once-popular minstrel doll called a Golliwogg. Seven singles were released in the San Francisco Bay area, but none received national attention. (However, in 1975 Fantasy released Pre-Creedence, a compilation album of recordings by The Golliwogs). Eventually John Fogerty took control of the group, writing most of their material and singing lead vocals. The band’s first album as Creedence Clearwater Revival was released in 1968. A cover of the Dale Hawkins Swamp Rock classic “Suzie Q.” became their first hit single (the song was later featured in the movie Apocalypse Now). As a result, Creedence Clearwater Revival is considered part of that distinctly American Swamp Rock music, exemplified again most prominently in their song “Born On The Bayou”.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - One Step Up / Two Steps Back: The Songs Of Bruce Springsteen (1997)
It's easy to think of Bruce Springsteen as that scruffy, over-rated songwriter from New Jersey who's had his day in the sun, but the truth is that he really does have an amazingly diverse and heartfelt body of work that includes strong output from recent years. Just the fact that artists ranging from David Bowie to Ben E. King to the Smithereens appear on this tribute disc is a testament to the respect he generates in all the hip music circles. Of the more familiar songs, Joe Cocker does a pleasant "Human Touch," Martin Zeller offers a moving "Darkness on the Edge of Town," while Ritchie Havens delivers a rather tepid acoustic version of "Streets of Philadelphia." But the lesser known compositions covered by lesser known artists are the ones that really stand out on this two-CD set. In particular, "All or Nothing at All" by Marshall Crenshaw, "Janey, Don't You Lose Heart" by Mrs. Fun/Tina & the B-Side Movement, and "Stolen Car" by Elliot Murphy are impressive treatments of Springsteen tunes that never climbed the charts. An effort seems to have been made to gather mostly obscure material to match with mostly obscure musicians, but the result is a compilation that is far more listenable than most of the tribute albums that have cropped up in the last while.

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - A & R Studios, New York 26th August 1971 (2012) ![]()
![]()
![]()
That good fortune and success can be short lived and transitory has been rarely illustrated better than by the awful circumstances that befell the Allman Brother Band in 1971 and 1972. The group s debut and sophomore albums, released in 1969 and 1970 respectively, had achieved relatively low sales outside of the southern states, but reviews were generally positive and American critics, particularly those writing for the by then almost biblical Rolling Stone, had come out in favour of the Allmans. But it was to be the marvellous live set recorded at New York s Fillmore East in March of 71 that would provide for the commercial breakthrough that turned the group from local curios into national treasures. The album, simply titled At Fillmore East, went on general release in July and both the critical reception and the sales were phenomenal. The road was where the Allmans had paid their dues and built up their core audience, and it was this same platform upon which the band and their managers knew they must now promote both band and record in the wake of their new found celebrity. So, back in New York a month after the release of Fillmore East, The Allman Brothers Band pulled up outside the city s A & R Studio on August 26th, to perform a show but one not just for the enjoyment of those fortunate enough to secure a ticket, but also for those within earshot of NYC s legendary radio station WPLJ FM, who were lined up to transmit proceedings live across the airwaves. The resultant broadcast is presented on this CD, available legitimately for the first time. A favourite of many tape and rarities collectors, the quality, dynamic performance and ambience encompassed herein all at once make for a quite staggering sonic experience, one that fans of this legendary act in its original line-up will relish alongside the group s other essential releases. Two months after this remarkable show went out, Brother Duane Allman, one of the world s finest ever rock and blues guitarists, was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. Little more than another year on, in November of 1973, ABB bassist Berry Oakley sustained a similar fate in a separate crash, just three blocks from Duane s fatal accident spot. This release showcases one of the final appearances of the original Allmans line up and remains not just a delightful listening experience but additionally serves as a fitting tribute and historical document to the legacy of this iconic American rock group.

ATLANTA RHYTHM SECTION - Anthology: Greatest & Latest (2007)
The Atlanta Rhythmic Section, sometimes abbreviated ARS, is an American southern rock band. In 1970 former members of the Candymen and the Classics IV joined together and became the session band for the newly opened Studio One in Doraville, Georgia.
The Atlanta Rhythm Section... ARS... In the annals of rock and roll, where do they fit? They put out 15 albums of excellent original material, and consistently put on entertaining live shows-both of which helped establish a broad if not huge fan base. They had some big hits and have been a major player in the Southern Rock scene. But is that the whole story? In some circles, maybe. But for those who've really gotten to know their music over the years, there's a lot more to the story. ARS was paired with contemporaries Lynyrd Skynyrd as the successors to the Allman Brothers - carrying the mantle of "Southern Rock" in the late 70s. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, it may have made sense at the time. But performing songs that were more musically diverse and having hits that had a softer, pop sound, the "Southern Rock" label was a mixed blessing and many of their unique musical accomplishments became lost in a genre that has lived on to this day-but never really fit ARS.

MELODY GARDOT
Melody Gardot is a Grammy-nominated American singer, writer and musician in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, though she considers herself a "citizen of the world". She has been influenced by such blues and jazz artists as Judy Garland, Janis Joplin, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Stan Getz and George Gershwin as well as Latin music artists such as Caetano Veloso. Her music has been compared to that of Nina Simone. Gardot follows the teachings of Buddhism, is a macrobiotic cook and humanitarian who often speaks about the benefits of music therapy. She has visited various universities and hospitals to speak about its ability to help reconnect neural pathways in the brain, improve speech ability, and lift general spirits. In a recent interview she was rumored to be working closely in a university in the United States to help develop a program for music therapy and the management of pain, something she has spoken about establishing in the future on her own.

2007 - Worrisome Heart
Melody Gardot's debut recording, released in 2007, came two years after she suffered a near fatal automobile accident, the differently able Gardot triumphing in accomplishing what many others, including her, could only dream of. This project has her singing and playing guitar and a little piano, but more so presenting this project of all original material. Gardot has an interesting personal story, but even more intriguing music that straddles the line between lounge jazz, folk, and cowgirl songs.
TRACKS: 01. Worrisome Heart 02. All That I Need Is Love 03. Gone 04. Sweet Memory 05. Some Lessons 06. Quiet Fire 07. One Day 08. Love Me Like A River Does 09. Goodnite 10. Twilight
2009 - My One And Only Thrill
Amazing though it is, the story of how Melody Gardot overcame the effects of a near-fatal accident to become one of the vocal sensations of 2008 is not the most extraordinary thing about the 23-year-old Philadelphia singer-songwriter. It is simply that here is a voice in a million; one that touches the soul. Melody's debut album `Worrisome Heart' introduced, in The Sunday Times' words: "a remarkable talent by any measure", with songs of quiet, wistful poetry in arrangements that "ooze after-hours sophistication". Yet the follow-up, for release in April 2009, marks a substantial leap forward. `My One And Only Thrill' is an intensely creative milestone, transcending genre distinctions of jazz and blues to offer a haunting personal musical statement that will appeal to all music-lovers.
TRACKS: 01. Baby I'm A Fool 02. If The Stars Were Mine 03. Who Will Comfort Me 04. Your Heart Is As Black As Night 05. Lover Undercover 06. Our Love Is Easy 07. Les Etoiles 08. The Rain 09. My One And Only Thrill 10. Deep Within The Corners Of My Mind 11. Somewhere Over The Rainbow 12. If the Stars Were Mine (Orchestral Version)
2012 - The Absence
The Absence is the third record from Grammy-nominated Melody Gardot. Produced by Heitor Pereira, renowned for his work as a film composer (Despicable Me, It's Complicated, From Prada to Nada) and world-class session guitarist (Sting, Seal, Caetano Veloso), the Brazilian-born, US-based artist shared Melody's enthusiasm for driving off the beaten path of Western pop, jazz, blues and soul. And he was as adventurous as Melody when it came to inventive sonic ideas. From the deserts of Morocco to the streets of Lisboa, from the tango bars of Buenos Aires to the beaches of Brazil, The Absence captures the essence of each of these exotic locales, while at the same time remaining quintessentially Melody Gardot. - amazon.com

SONNY LANDRETH - Elemental Journey (2012)
Sonny Landreth is an American blues musician from southwest Louisiana who is especially known as a slide guitar player. He has performed and recorded with artists the likes of John Hiatt, Jimmy Buffett, Eric Clapton, Allman Brothers, Mark Knopfler, Gov’t Mule, and Little Feat, to name a few. Landreth was awarded instrumentalist of the year from the Ameriana Music Association in 2005.
Elemental Journey is Landreth’s 11th solo album, and it’s his first all-instrumental recording. It’s a wonderfully bright, woven mesh of blues, strings, rock, zydeco, country, reggae, and jazz that shifts and turns and builds within each track, and all of it fits seamlessly together like a huge musical quilt made for guitar heaven. Track after track surprises and amazes here, from the opening “Gaia Tribe,” which features guest Joe Satriani on guitar, through the stirring “Heavy Heart Rising” and the joyous “Wonderide” and “Passionola” (featuring Eric Johnson on guitar) to the Caribbean shuffle of “Forgotten Story,” complete with steel drums from Robert Greenidge. Members of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra are here, too, and the touches of violins, cellos, and violas that appear and fade appropriately throughout these tracks keep everything fresh, and there’s always some new guitar line coming in.

JOHN OATES - Mississippi Mile (2011) & The Bluesville Session (2012)
John William Oates is an American rock, R&B and soul guitarist, musician, songwriter and producer best known as half of the rock and soul duo Hall & Oates (with co-founder/lead vocalist/songwriter/occasional instrumentalist Daryl Hall).
For his third solo album, John Oates decided to pay tribute to the blues and R&B that originated in the Mississippi Delta, taking considerable liberty in his definition of the Delta by letting it encompass Chuck Berry's rock & roll, the Coasters' jiving cool, the Impressions' slick uptown groove, and Percy Mayfield's smoky late-night balladry. Only sticklers will gripe about Oates bending the borders of the blues because history has shown that he's never been a purist; he's always fused different sounds and styles, which is precisely what he does here, grounding himself in an easy-rolling bluesy roots music that can encompass all manner of R&B, from a reworking of Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up" to a dynamic reinterpretation of Oates' own "You Make My Dreams Come True." It's a setting far more stripped-down than he's usually performed within -- lots of acoustic guitars, Dobros, and mandolins -- and the band locks into its rhythm with ease. Plus, there's actually a bit of sandpaper grit to Oates' voice -- maybe not enough to make this a down-and-dirty hoedown, but enough to give it soulfulness, enough to keep it from grooving a little too smoothly. Parts of Mississippi Mile hark back to Oates' folky beginnings -- Hall & Oates covered "Deep River Blues" early on and he reworks the song here -- but it's a unique record in his career, not just in how it puts an emphasis on blues and folk over soul but how it captures him performing with a relaxed authority that's quite appealing. - cduniverse.com
TRACKS: 01. Mississippi Mile 02. Let It Rock 03. It's All Aright 04. Please Send Me Someone To Love 05. All Shook Up 06. Pallet 07. Searchin' 08. Come Back Baby 09. Deep River 10. He Was A Friend Of Mine 11. You Make My Dreams Come True 12. Dance Hall Girls

"The Bluesville Sessions" was recorded "Live in-studio" at the Sirius XM studios and not at a concert venue. It still has a good live feel throughout the recording though. Most of the songs are live versions from John Oates' "Mississippi Mile" album and I think they actually sound more pleasing to the ear on this album. The music style is straight-ahead blues-rock with John Oates' distinctive singing voice taking center stage. The instrumentation and production is consistent through the entire album. I think if John Oates went full-blown country-crossover, he'd have a new career. - amazon.com

SMALL FACES - Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake (1968) [Deluxe Edition 2012]
There was no shortage of good psychedelic albums emerging from England in 1967-1968, but Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake is special even within their ranks. The Small Faces had already shown a surprising adaptability to psychedelia with the single "Itchycoo Park" and much of their other 1967 output, but Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake pretty much ripped the envelope. British bands had an unusual approach to psychedelia from the get-go, often preferring to assume different musical "personae" on their albums, either feigning actual "roles" in the context of a variety show (as on the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album), or simply as storytellers in the manner of the Pretty Things on S.F. Sorrow, or actor/performers as on the Who's Tommy. The Small Faces tried a little bit of all of these approaches on Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, but they never softened their sound.
Digitally remastered and expanded three CD edition of the British band's 1968 album including 26 bonus tracks. Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake is widely regarded as a classic album that stayed #1 in the UK Albums Chart for six weeks. The two-act concept album consisted of six original songs on side one and a whimsical psychedelic fairy tale on side two relating the adventures of "Happiness Stan" and his need to find out where the moon went when it waned. Critics raved, and the album sold well, but the band were confronted by the practical problem that they had created a studio masterpiece which was virtually impossible to recreate on the road. Ogdens' was performed as a whole just once, and memorably, live in the studio on the BBC television program Colour Me Pop. The surviving members Kenny Jones and Ian McLagan have overseen the remastering of this album. - amazon.com

MIKE BLOOMFIELD & AL KOOPER - The Live Adventures Of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper (1969)
Guitarist Michael Bloomfield and organ player Al Kooper was part of Bob Dylan's backing band in 1965, playing together with Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson behind Dylan at a few concerts. They were also present on Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited sessions. Kooper later was involved with Paul Butterfield's Blues Band and Blood, Sweat & Tears, and guested on records by Dylan, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, which he kind of discovered and produced. Bloomfield, that died of drug abuse in 1981, is known for his work with Paul Butterfield and the group Electric Flag.
The Live Adventures of..., a follow-up to the successful 1968 jam album Super Session with Bloomfield, Kooper and Stephen Stills, was recorded over three nights in 1968 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. It's a typical '60s live album, rather unfocused but notable for Bloomfield's singing debut. Includes a cover of "The Weight". Recorded over three nights in 1968 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, the follow-up to the acclaimed Super Session has its moments, but is mostly long on '60s noodly grooviness and lacking in focus and inspiration. It's notable (sort of) for Bloomfield's singing debut. by Cary Wolfson - allmusic.com

PAUL KOSSOFF - Kossoff (2005)
Paul Francis Kossoff (September 14, 1950, in Hampstead, North West London, England–March 19, 1976) was a rock guitarist best known as a member of the band Free. Kossoff—son of the noted British actor David Kossoff—started playing in the mid 1960s and his first professional gig was with Black Cat Bones alongside drummer Simon Kirke. The band did many supporting shows for Fleetwood Mac and both Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac’s guitarist) and Kossoff would jam and spend hours discussing blues playing and players. Black Cat Bones also played with touring blues piano player Champion Jack Dupree. Both Kossoff and Kirke would go on to play on the Dupree album When You Feel the Feeling…
In April 1968 the pair teamed up with Paul Rodgers (vocals) and Andy Fraser (bass) to form Free. They did the “Transit” circuit for two years and recorded two albums: Tons Of Sobs(1968) and Free(1969). Both albums showcased the band’s blues and soul influenced sound, a style which was in contrast to some of their progressive and heavier counterparts at the time. Success came in 1970 when their third album, Fire and Water(1970), spawned the massive hit “All Right Now”. The band played the Isle of Wight festival to both audience and critical acclaim. Sellout tours in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan followed, but after the release of the next album, Highway(1970), band pressures led to a split. The live album ‘Free Live, recorded in 1970, was released in 1971 as a farewell record.

FREE - All Right Now: The Best Of (1991)
Free was an English rock band, formed in London in 1968, best known for their 1970 signature song "All Right Now". They disbanded in 1973 and lead singer Paul Rodgers went on to become a frontman of the band Bad Company along with Simon Kirke on drums; lead guitarist Paul Kossoff died from a drug-induced heart failure at the age of 25 in 1976, bassist Andy Fraser formed Sharks. The band was famed for its sensational live shows and nonstop touring. However, early studio albums did not sell very well – until the release of Fire and Water which featured the massive hit "All Right Now". The song helped secure them a place at the huge Isle of Wight Festival 1970 where they played to 600,000 people. By the early 1970s, Free was one of the biggest-selling British blues-rock groups; by the time the band dissolved in 1973, they had sold more than 20 million albums around the world and had played more than 700 arena and festival concerts. "All Right Now," remains a rock staple, and had been entered into ASCAP's "One Million" airplay singles club. Rolling Stone has referred to the band as "British hard rock pioneers". The magazine ranked Rodgers #55 in its list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time", while Kossoff was ranked #51 in its list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Free were signed to Island Records in the UK and A&M Records in North America. Both labels became part of the PolyGram group in 1989, then Universal Music Group in 1998; UMG now controls the band's catalogue worldwide.

AL KOOPER - Rare & Well Done: The Greatest And Rarest (2001)
These two discs provide an overview of the career of Al Kooper, one of the great rock journeymen. Kooper, a spirited multi-instrumentalist and talented vocalist, is perhaps better known for his sideman and production work than for his own efforts. With 18 of 33 tracks previously unreleased, these discs set Kooper in perspective. They chronicle his work with the Blues Project, Blood Sweat & Tears (their debut, Child Is Father to the Man, the only album with Kooper, is their only really good one), Shie Otis, and Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills (on the classic 1968 album Super Session). The missing link between Barry Manilow and Randy Newman, Kooper can be bombastic and sentimental (see "They Just Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore" and "New York's My Home"). He can be arch, too: His goofy cover of XTC's "Making Plans for Nigel" is a gas. Soulful? Forget it. Not only does his demo for BS&Ts "Somethin' Goin' On" prove his emotionality, his "Living in My Own Religion" speaks to his roots with fervor and without condescension.
How tough Kooper can be, live, comes clear on "Baby Please Don't Go"; how weird he can be is apparent on an instrumental transmogrification of the Beatles' "Hey Jude" and a slow, oddly gentrified "I Got a Woman." Kooper has played with everybody from the Royal Teens to Gene Pitney, Bob Dylan (his organ on "Like a Rolling Stone" is almost as striking as the lyrics), the Rolling Stones, Green on Red, and Lattimore. He's been sampled by the Pharcyde and the Beastie Boys, and has produced Lynyrd Skynyrd, Thelonious Monster, and the Tubes. He's written an autobiography and taught at the Berklee College of Music. Kooper's been there, done that, and then some. Al's Big Deal, a disc Legacy issued in 1989, hinted at his breadth and includes seven songs not available here, but Rare + Well Done is the reference record.

RORY BLOCK - I Belong To The Band: A Tribute To Rev. Gary Davis (2012)
I Belong to the Band is the fourth CD in Rory Block’s “Mentor Series” of recordings, in which she pays tribute to great blues guitarists that she studied in her youth. The previous tribute recordings were to Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and Robert Johnson. Block’s legion of fans will surely find this a fascinating and exciting departure. Prior to recording this disc, Block asked Stefan Grossman and David Bromberg for some lessons in the good Reverend’s brilliant and peculiar style, which is very different from her own style, even though Davis was a huge influence on her both musically and personally. Playing 12-string throughout the CD, she proves herself a powerful, pile-driving rhythm guitarist, laying a solid foundation for some multitracked supporting fills and solos. Block has also multitracked vocals, and between the guitar fills and the choir of Rorys, there are moments that almost seem a little cluttered. Speaking of vocals, Block has some vocal eccentricities that some listeners may find off-putting. A lifetime of study and practice of some of the purest blues available has given her a ferocious edge, which can be nothing short of overwhelming, and she doesn’t hold anything back here. This is a powerful piece of work, but it may not be for the fainthearted. - premierguitar.com

RENEGADE CREATION
When an album boasts Robben Ford on lead vocals and guitar and Jimmy Haslip on electric bass, one tends to assume that there will be some type of jazz influence. Haslip, after all, was a founding member of the Yellowjackets back in 1981 and was still with the group 29 years later in early 2010, while the eclectic Ford has a long history of excelling as both a blues-rocker and a jazzman. It turns out that jazz is, in fact, an influence on parts of Renegade Creation, which unites Haslip and Ford with Michael Landau (lead vocals, guitar) and Gary Novak (drums).

DIRTY TRICKS - Discography
Meat n' potatoes Hard Rockers DIRTY TRICKS formed in 1974 and three delivered unpretentious Hard Rock albums for the Polydor label. The band debuted live at London's Marquee Club as openers to DUX DELUXE during January of 1975. DIRTY TRICKS debuted with an eponymous Rodger Bain produced set promoted by support tours in the UK to both ARGENT and BUDGIE. In June of 1975 Australian drummer John Lee, a former member of DINGOES, BLACKFEATHER and ARIEL, joined the fold. Lee would quit following the third album 'Hit And Run' and was superseded by Andy Bierne. Tony Visconti would be on hand to produce the band's second effort. Touring for this release would witness British support dates to the STREETWALKERS and gigs across America as guests to CHEAP TRICK, BLUE OYSTER CULT and BOB SEGAR. The group bowed out in 1977 with 'Hit And Run', another Visconti produced affair. After the group had finally called it quits the Binnie / Horbury / Bierne triumvirate put in some rehearsals with OZZY OSBOURNE, then having just decamped from BLACK SABBATH. This proposed band folded as Osbourne duly rejoined BLACK SABBATH. Bassist Terry Horbury would then join VARDIS in 1983, guitarist John Frazer Binnie wound up joining the high profile ROGUE MALE in the early 80s. Bierne eventually turned up in PRAYING MANTIS, SCORCHED EARTH, GRAND PRIX and 1987's DORIAN GRAY. Stewart meantime hooked up with erstwhile SIDEWINDER and STALLION guitarist STUART SMITH to found FRENCH KISS, a band unit completed by drummer Kelvin 'Yatta' Yates. Stewart and Smith later relocated to America forging INFORMER. DIRTY TRICKS members Binnie, Horbury and Stewart evolved into tribute band STAIRWAY TO ZEPPELIN during the 90s fronted by one 'Robert Planet' a.k.a Kenny Stewart. Majestic Rock Records re-issued all three DIRTY TRICKS albums in 2004, all boasting extra studio and live tracks. In a surprise move, DIRTY TRICKS returned to action in 2009 to record new album tracks dubbed 'Up At The 9 Count'. The band unit comprised John Fraser-Binnie, Kenny Stewart along with new recruits bassist Fingerthumbs and drummers Richard Marcanjelo and Reuben O'Donoghue.

CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD - Big Moon Ritual (2012)
It's hard not to read the name of Chris Robinson's second post-Black Crowes venture as a jab at his brother Rich: the brothers brawled through two incarnations of the Crowes in the '90s and 2000s, and only now has Chris found his Brotherhood, now that he has once again parted ways with Rich. Of course, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood also strikes up a communal hippie vibe on their 2012 debut Big Moon Ritual, an album they recorded after touring for nearly a year, so it bears all the scars of the road along with a healthy disregard of clock and calendar. It is, as they say, how these things used to be made: bands used to tour forever, then roll themselves into the studio, knock out a session, then head back out on the never-ending road. It also happens to be how the Crowes closed out their career, cutting the exceptional 2009 LP Before the Frost…Until the Freeze live in front of an audience at Levon Helm's upstate New York barn, and Robinson picks up that thread here, channeling that loose live spirit within the studio. Perhaps the Brotherhood is a shade too loose -- "Tulsa Yesterday" opens with its sprawling 12 minutes and no song dips below the seven-minute mark -- but the time passes smoothly as the music ebbs and flows, never diving into a grimy, gritty murk but rolling across a pretty, hazy sunset. Surely, it's steeped in the '70s -- so much so there are analog synthesizers straight out of A Clockwork Orange -- but there isn’t a self-conscious retro-revival here; the Chris Robinson Brotherhood spends their time doing what comes naturally, and the music flows easily, even alluringly, as they jam with no care of when they began or where they will end. - allmusic.com

From Australia & introduced to Europe by blues master Dave Hole in 1994, Rob Tognoni delivers a 100% powerfully charged experience with every performance. There is simply no compromise, which is strongly evident in his music. After 20 years his explosive guitar playing and unique songs are now being compared with the greats of his genre and have firmly established him in the European venues & festivals as well as gaining many fans of hard blues rock worldwide. " Shakin' The Devil's Hand - Live In Europe" captures Tognoni at his emotive best. The title track was originally penned from a hindsight view of the legendary Robert Johnson deal at the Crossroads...but also by shear co-incidence can be attributed to Rob's symbolic roots and by his uncompromising, direct & raw guitar energy..." When you listen to his music, you hear a 40 year legacy under his searing lead lines. NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE - Americana (2012)
AMERICANA is the first album from Neil Young & Crazy Horse in nearly nine years. Crazy Horse is: Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina, Poncho Sampedro, and Neil Young. As you’ll see from the track-listing, AMERICANA is collection of classic, American folk songs. In their day, some of these may have been referred to as “protest songs,” “murder ballads,” or campfire-type songs passed down with universal, relatable tales for everyman. Some of these compositions which, like “Tom Dooley” and “Oh Susannah,” were written in the 1800s, while others, like “This Land Is Your Land” (utilizing the original, widely misinterpreted “deleted verses”) and “Get A Job,” are mid-20th-century folk classics. It’s also interesting to note that “God Save The Queen,” Britain’s national anthem, also became the de facto national anthem of sorts before the establishment of The Union as we know it until we came to adopt our very own “The Star Spangled Banner,” which has been recognized for use as early as 1889 and made our official national anthem in 1931. Each of these compositions is very much part of the fabric of our American heritage; the roots of what we think of as “Americana” in cultural terms, using songs as a way of passing along information and documenting our past. What ties these songs together is the fact that while they may represent an America that may no longer exist, the emotions and scenarios behind these songs still resonate with what’s going on in the country today with equal, if not greater impact nearly 200 years later. The lyrics reflect the same concerns and are still remarkably meaningful to a society going through economic and cultural upheaval, especially during an election year. They are just as poignant and powerful today as the day they were written.

DREW NELSON - Tilt A Whirl (2012)
Mixing the roots-rock sounds of Bruce Springsteen with the storytelling sensibility of Nanci Griffith is Drew Nelson on his Red House Records debut Tilt-A-Whirl. This gritty and soulful Americana record busts right out of the gate with the blue-collar anthem "Promised Land," a rockin' opener that traverses the eroding landscape of the American dream. Drawing from his years on the road and the people he's met along the way, the 10 tracks that follow introduce us to a cast of characters from out-of-work war vets, forsaken lovers, to migrant workers and other directionless souls. Drew brings their sad and beautiful working class stories to life as they strle to hold on to their hopes and dreams as they get jostled and spun like the carnival ride that lends it's name to this modern Americana classic. - amazon.com

When the band formed in 1960, Starr was a member of another Liverpool band, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. He joined the Beatles in August 1962, taking the place of Pete Best. In addition to his drumming, Starr is featured on lead vocals on a number of successful Beatles songs (in particular, "With a Little Help from My Friends", "Yellow Submarine", and the Beatles version of "Act Naturally"). He is credited as a co-writer of the songs "What Goes On" and "Flying", and as the writer of "Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden". As drummer for the Beatles, Starr was musically creative, and his contribution to the band's music has received high praise from notable drummers in more recent times. Starr described himself as "your basic offbeat drummer with funny fills". Drummer Steve Smith said that Starr's popularity "brought forth a new paradigm" where "we started to see the drummer as an equal participant in the compositional aspect" and that Starr "composed unique, stylistic drum parts for The Beatles songs". In 2011, Starr was picked as the fifth-best drummer of all-time by Rolling Stone readers. Starr is the most documented and critically acclaimed actor among the Beatles, playing a central role in several of their films, and appearing in numerous other films, both during and after his career with the Beatles. After the Beatles' break-up in 1970, Starr achieved solo musical success with several singles and albums, and recorded with each of his fellow ex-Beatles as they too developed their post-Beatle musical careers. He has also been featured in a number of TV documentaries, hosted TV shows, narrated the first two series of the children's television series Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends and portrayed "Mr. Conductor" during the first season of the PBS children's television series Shining Time Station. Since 1989, Starr has toured with eleven variations of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. - wikipedia

Sir James Paul McCartney is the most successful songwriter in the history of popular music. McCartney is a multiple Grammy Award- and Academy Award-winning English singer-songwriter, poet, composer, multi-instrumentalist, entrepreneur, record producer, film producer, painter, and animal rights and peace activist. He gained worldwide fame as a member of The Beatles, alongside John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. McCartney and Lennon formed one of the most influential and successful songwriting partnerships and wrote some of the most popular songs in the history of rock music. After leaving The Beatles in 1970, McCartney launched a successful solo career and formed the band Wings with his first wife, Linda Eastman, and singer-songwriter Denny Laine. He has worked on film scores and classical and electronic music, released a large catalogue of songs as a solo artist, and taken part in projects to help international charities.
McCartney is listed in Guinness World Records as the most successful musician and composer in popular music history, with 60 gold discs and sales of 100 million singles. His song “Yesterday” (credited to Lennon/McCartney, but composed entirely by McCartney) is listed as the most covered song in history—by over 3,500 artists so far—and has been played more than 7,000,000 times on American television and radio. Wings’ 1977 single “Mull Of Kintyre” became the first single to sell more than two million copies in the UK, and remains the UK’s top selling non-charity single. According to britishhitsongwriters.com, he is the most successful songwriter in UK singles chart history, based on weeks that his compositions have spent on the chart.

JOHN LENNON - The Gold Collection (2012)
John Winston Ono Lennon has been exhumed in print more than any other popular musical figure, including the late Elvis Presley, of whom Lennon said that he "died when he went into the army". Such was the cutting wit of a deeply loved and sadly missed giant of the twentieth century. As a member of the world's most successful group ever, he changed lives, mostly for the better. Following the painful collapse of The Beatles, he came out a wiser but angrier person. Together with his wife Yoko Ono, he attempted to transform the world through non-musical means. Almost from the moment that Lennon's heart stopped in the Roosevelt Hospital the whole world reacted in unprecedented mourning, with scenes usually reserved for royalty and world leaders. His records were re-released and experienced similar sales and chart positions to that of the Beatles" heyday. While all this happened, one could "imagine" Lennon calmly looking down on us, watching the world's reaction, and having a huge celestial laugh. Lennon had a brilliant sense of humour and a deeply romantic heart. He could be cruel and unbelievably kind; he could love you one minute and destroy you with his tongue a few minutes later. Opinions as to his character are subjective. What is undeniable, is that the body of songs he created with Paul McCartney is the finest popular music catalogue ever known. His composition "Imagine" was voted one of the songs of the millennium, and for many of us has more power and meaning than any national anthem. - john-lennon.com

DON WILLIAMS - The 30th Anniversary Platinum Edition - Greatest Hit Best Audiophile (2011) ![]()

![]()
With his laid-back, straightforward vocals and large, imposing build, Don Williams came to be known as "the Gentle Giant." That nickname was bestowed on him in the early '70s, when he began a string of countrypolitan hits that ran into the early '90s. Williams was never known as an innovator, but his ballads were immensely popular; in the course of his career, he had a total of 17 number one hits. Williams began playing guitar when he was child, learning the instrument from his mother. As a teenager, he played in a variety of country, rockabilly, folk, and rock & roll bands. After completing high school, he formed his first band with a friend named Lofton Kline. Williams and Kline recruited another singer, Susan Taylor, and formed the Pozo-Seco Singers, a folk-pop group, in 1964. The following year, the band signed a contract with Columbia Records. In 1966, the Pozo-Seco Singers had a pop hit with "Time," which climbed into the Top 50. For the next two years, they had a series of minor hits, highlighted by two Top 40 hits in late 1966, "I Can Make It with You" and "Look What You've Done." The group stayed until 1971. After the Pozo-Seco Singers disbanded, Williams decided to pursue a career as a songwriter in Nashville, since he wasn't convinced that he was suited for a solo career. He signed with Jack Clement's Jack Music, Inc., initially just as a songwriter. By the end of 1972, he had signed with JMI as a solo artist, releasing "Don't You Believe" as his debut. The song went nowhere, but "The Shelter of Your Eyes" climbed to number 14 at the beginning of 1973. For the next year, Williams scored a string of minor hits before he had his 1974 breakthrough, "We Should Be Together," which reached number five. The single led to a contract with ABC/Dot. "I Wouldn't Want to Live If You Didn't Love Me," his first single for ABC/Dot, reached number one in the summer 1974. The single launched a string of Top Ten hits that ran more or less uninterrupted until 1991; between 1974 and 1991, only four of his 46 charting singles didn't make the Top Ten. Instead of reaching the top of the charts with his original material, most of his big hits were covers of other songwriters, including John Prine, Bob McDill, Dave Loggins, and Wayland Holyfield.
During the '70s, Don Williams became the most successful country artist in the world. His country-pop not only crossed over into the American pop mainstream, it also gained him a large following in England and Europe. In addition to his Top Ten hits, Williams won several country music awards, highlighted by the Country Music Association naming him Male Vocalist of the Year in 1978, the same year his number one single "Tulsa Time" was named Single of the Year. In the late '70s, he began acting, appearing primarily in the films of his friend Burt Reynolds, including W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings and Smokey and the Bandit II.

DAVID BOWIE - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (1972) [2012 Remaster]
EMI are excited to announce the release of a 40th anniversary edition of David Bowie’s truly groundbreaking and hugely influential album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars. Originally released through RCA Victor on 6th June 1972, Ziggy Stardust was David Bowie’s fifth album, co-produced by Bowie and Ken Scott. Incredibly, the album was written whilst Bowie was recording 1971’s Hunky Dory album, with recording beginning a couple of months before that album’s release. It was recorded at Trident Studios, London between 8th November 1971 and 4th February 1972, with the line up: Mick Ronson (guitar, piano, backing vocals, string arrangements), Trevor Bolder (bass), Mick Woodmansey (drums), Rick Wakeman (keyboards) and backing vocals on ‘It Ain’t Easy’ by Dana Gillespie. As well as performing vocals, Bowie also played acoustic guitar, saxophone and harpsichord on the album and was involved in the arrangements too. The album eventually peaked at #5 on the UK Album Chart on 22nd July having entered the chart at #15 on 1st July. Key to the album’s rise in the UK were the two TV performances of “Starman” on Granada TV’s Lift Off With Ayshea and nationally on the BBC’s Top Of The Pops. The album’s influence is immeasurable – it converted legions of fans, becoming the zeitgeist and a major influence on the next generation, particular those who were involved in the punk movement – musicians, artists, designers – and the subsequent re-birth of rock and pop.

GEORGE HARRISON - The Gold Collection (2012)
George Harrison, MBE (25 February 1943 – 29 November 2001) born in Liverpool, UK, was an English rock musician, singer-songwriter and film producer who achieved international fame as lead guitarist in The Beatles, along with mainstream success as a solo artist. George contributed to the songwriting talents of his Beatles band mates, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, firstly by adding ideas and guitar parts, and later with his distinctive style of music inspired by Eastern spirituality. Ten years after Harrison's death, and forty-two years after its first release, his classic "Here Comes the Sun" is the number one Beatles download on iTunes. After the Beatles stopped touring in 1966, George started writing more songs than could be fitted onto the albums so that by the time of the split he had built up a collection of songs, some used on his debut solo album, All Things Must Pass. The album, released in 1970, contains the two-time number one hit, "My Sweet Lord". Harrison is also credited for creating music benefits, notably the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh. Harrison played beside Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, and Leon Russell to a crowd of 40,000 in Madison Square Garden, New York. The show raised over $240,000 benefiting the George Harrison Fund for Bangladesh relief. Harrison went on to release several successful solo albums, and in the late 1980s collaborated with Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty, in a group called Traveling Wilburys. The group released two albums. Later, Harrison reunited with the other two surviving Beatles, after John Lennon's murder in 1980, to produce two final Beatles records, "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" featuring the voice of Lennon, taken from home demos provided by Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono. The three Beatles also co-wrote a massive autobiography and television special, both titled "The Beatles Anthology." Before his death, Harrison conceived of a Cirque du Soleil show, "Love," featuring remixes of Beatles music which were overseen by Beatles producer George Martin. Harrison died on November 29, 2001 after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a wife and son, Olivia and Dhani Harrison. His last album, Brainwashed, was released posthumously and featured the single "Any Road". A benefit concert in Harrison's memory was played on 29 November 2002 at the Royal Albert Hall. The star-studded event (featuring Eric Clapton and Monty Python, as well as former band mates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr) was released on the DVD double-album, Concert for George.

JIMMY BARNES - Hits (2011)
James Dixon Swan, better known as Jimmy Barnes, is a Scottish-born Australian rock singer-songwriter. His father Jim Swan was a prizefighter and his older brother John Swan is also a rock singer. It was actually John who had encouraged and taught Jim how to sing as he wasn't really interested at the time. His career as both a solo performer and as the lead vocalist with the rock band Cold Chisel has made him one of the most popular and best-selling Australian music artists of all time. The combination of 14 Australian Top 40 albums for Cold Chisel and 13 charting solo albums, including nine No. 1s, gives Barnes the highest number of hit albums of any Australian artist.
The hits of Australian vocalist Jimmy Barnes are collected on this retrospective compilation, which includes a number of songs that graced the number one slot in his home country.

MICHAEL CHAPMAN - Americana (2000) & Americana 2 (2002)
Michael Chapman is a singer-songwriter and guitarist. Chapman originally began singing and playing jazz in the folk clubs of the 1960s, and eventually recorded over 30 albums.
Chapman has long had a fascination, not just with American music, but the American South and West. So an album explicitly inspired by the country should come as no surprise. The joy is how much it highlights his fabulous guitar picking. "Sweet Little Friend From Georgia" and "Coming of the Roads" might seem relatively straightforward, but the more epic "Swamp" and "Gaddo's Lake" delve into decidedly complex territory; in fact, the impressionistic "Swamp" is probably the record's centerpiece. As an instrumental portrait of the southern states it's loving, very finely honed, and played in a way that reminds you that Chapman is one of the best, and most undervalued, guitarists around. Even if "Jumping Geordie" has its origins on the other side of the Atlantic, it still fits in. For longtime fans, "Indian Annie's Kitchen" brings back some memories of "Kodak Ghosts," and throughout small touchstones of blues, country, and jazz slip by. A comparison to Ry Cooder -- most especially some of his soundtrack work -- might not be too amiss, except that Chapman is looking in from the outside, and is, possibly, a more gifted player. - allmusic.com

THE BEACH BOYS- That's Why God Made The Radio (2012)
The first Beach Boys albums in decades to include all the surviving founders, That's Why God Made the Radio features a title track celebrating the radio stations that first broke the Beach Boys back in the early '60s. All of the surviving members of the band who contributed the most to their '60s prime: Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks, came aboard for the reunion tour celebrating their 50th anniversary, as well as the recording sessions that produced this 12-track album. Produced by Wilson and executive produced by Love, That's Why God Made the Radio is notable for being a collection of all originals (although the Beach Boys had announced their recording reunion with a version of their 1968 hit "Do It Again").
It's easy to be sceptical about the Beach Boys' reunion. Indeed, if you look at the messageboards, diehard fans seem the most distrustful of the lot, which figures: for all the warmth and open-heartedness of the band's best music, if there's one thing being a Beach Boys fan teaches you, it's scepticism. There are only so many times you can be told Brian Wilson has been restored to full physical and mental health, the better to make himself and a lot of other people a great deal of money, before you develop what the Clash called a "bullshit detector", and Beach Boys fans have been told that on a regular basis – and with a great deal of evidence to the contrary – for the last 36 years.

The band’s wildly energetic and seriously soulful new CD JUMP START is jam-packed with Lil’ Ed’s incendiary slide playing and rough, passionate singing, as the ragged-but-right Blues Imperials cook like mad alongside him. Produced by Williams and Alligator president Bruce Iglauer, it is a tour-de-force of untamed slide guitar, rock solid rhythms, heartrending ballads and authentic deep blues vocals. Williams wrote or co-wrote 13 of the album’s 14 songs, ranging from the non-stop boogie blast of ”If You Were Mine” to the heart-on-his-sleeve honesty of ”Life Is A Journey” to the bouncing and jazzy ”Jump Right In” to the swaggering, autobiographical ”Musical Mechanical Electrical Man.” The album overflows with the band s full throttle drive and is fueled by Lil’ Ed’s love of both serious blues and good time fun. JUMP START reveals a band firing on all cylinders and ready to spread the genuine houserockin’ fever to their biggest audience yet. ”It's all blues, really,” says Lil’ Ed.

LARRY MILLER- On The Edge (2012)
After picking up his brother's guitar and writing his first song, he felt his future lay in Rock music, being influenced by some of the guitar greats - Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gary Moore. "For me, my moment of inspiration was seeing Rory Gallagher live, I had never experienced anything like it. So loud, so gloriously on the edge of total mayhem, yet Rory was still totally in control. How could I not do this too! Like Rory I'd work under my own name, with a band. I'd do all the writing, singing, producing, playing and leading." Very quickly, Larry found his own Blues/Rock style, and has been constantly refining it. He is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, with a love for his music which is simply infectious. After many years in the music business and touring constantly, Larry has built up a large following across the UK and building an ever increasing army of fans in Europe. His status as guitar slinger, is becoming legendary with his exciting, mesmerising guitar playing and rip roaring live shows. His engaging personality brings a dimension of showmanship to his performances like no other. In 2009, Larry played an amazing seven encores at the Cambridge Rock Festival and a declaration was made of a "National Larry Miller day". This is embedded in the festival's history and he returned in 2010 to a standing ovation and the biggest crowd of the festival. He is unique, there is only one Larry Miller. - larrymiller.co.uk

RED DIRT - Red Dirt (1970)
Red Dirt were a British heavy blues-rock band, whose sole eponymous album appeared and disappeared again in 1970.
Reissue of rare 1970 UK heavy fuzzed blues rock album plus 5 rare bonus tracks. A blues-rock band whose album is now an ultra-rarity. There's also been a limited edition (300 copies) release of live material, Diamonds In The Dirt, by the band. Produced by Geoff Gill, the Red Dirt album mostly comprises heavy blues-rock tracks, which are unlikely to have much appeal beyond fans of this genre. The only variation to this format comes with the opening cut Memories, the melodic Song For Pauline, the country-influenced Death Of A Dream and the final cut I've Been Down So Long, but unless you're heavily into blues-rock don't spend a small fortune on this album.

PATTI SMITH - Banga (2012)
People often talk about music fandom as a secular religion, one of many founded in the 20th century to replace the old church. In the communal gig experience there is the rush of elevation. Lyrics are studied like scripture. Fans are devoted to their idols. The trouble is, the idols aren't often all that awe-inspiring. Rock has long resembled a cacophony of minor deities waiting for some proper monotheism to come along.
One of the few figures with a firm handle on the shaman-poet imperative has been Patti Smith. Banga is the 65-year-old's 11th album, one of the most satisfying of her latterday career. A performance poet before she ever got a band together, Smith's electrified presence and aggressive, incantatory style – part Dylan, part Jersey girl – have always aspired to a frequency that you might call sacred, if that word hadn't been sullied by the so-called new age. "Oh crown of wind, two royal leopards run with him," she murmurs on Seneca as circuitous guitar tones set out a mantric path. Out of context it might read like sophomoric poeticism, but like every song Smith sings it comes to the ear like a spell. - guardian.co.uk

GOTTHARD - Firebirth (2012)
Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, whose death by fire is the end and also the beginning, the GOTTHARD musicians, in the depths of endless mourning, found peace, strength and courage to set back out for the way to the here and now. The end of this road back to life and the start of a new GOTTHARD era is evident for the Swiss multiplatinum band with “Firebirth”, the new and moving album. “Firebirth” is arguably one of the most important and in its conception most emotional album in the band’s 20-year history. It is the first studio album since the tragic death of the legendary frontman Steve Lee in a traffic accident in the autumn of 2010 and the first step in a new and much anticipated chapter for the band, together with their new singer Nic Maeder. In November 2011 Nic, born in Switzerland, who spent many years in Australia, accepted one of the most difficult and also one of the most exciting and emotional tasks in his life. His motivation, self-confidence and sympathy helped him to win out against many top-class applicants and impressed his new colleagues Leo Leoni (guitar), Marc Lynn (bass), Hena Habinger (drums) and Freddy Scherer (guitar) with his personality and also in his new task as singer and songwriter.

SQUACKETT - A Life Within A Day (2012)
With progressive rock (in its many forms) now seemingly more popular than ever, this collaboration from members of two of the godfathers of the genre is hugely exciting. Chris Squire has appeared on every YES album since 1969 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential bass guitarists of all time. Now an established solo artist, Steve Hackett first came to prominence as the guitarist with GENESIS. He was with the band from 1970 to 1977 and played on six studio albums and featured on three live albums before leaving to concentrate on his solo career. The two met when Chris Squire was working on a solo album and needed some guitar parts. Chris was put in touch with Steve and through these sessions the idea for SQUACKETT was born. Over four years in the making, the 'Squackett' album is very much more than the sum of its parts. 'It was very much about a bunch of pals swapping notes and anecdotes' says Hackett 'I think the material is simple and direct.' 'It has a flavour to it that is reminiscent of a few things from different artists,' says Squire. 'There is some clever Prog Rock stuff on the album, some jazzy bits, but there are parts that have vocal harmonies like Crosby, Stills and Nash'.

SRV AND DOUBLE TROUBLE - Live Alive (1986) & The Best of Slow Blues (2004)
Live Alive is an electric blues album compiled from four live performances by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. The performances were recorded on July 16, 1985 at the Montreux Jazz Festival; July 17–18, 1986 at the Austin Opera House; and July 19, 1986 at Dallas Starfest. Much of the album was overdubbed in the studio. The 1985 Montreux performance was much better received than the 1982 visit, when some of the crowd booed Vaughan's hard blues sound. The song selection for Live Alive displays many of SRV's biggest influences: Jimi Hendrix ("Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"), Stevie Wonder ("Superstition"), Howlin' Wolf ("Commit a Crime"), and Buddy Guy ("Mary Had a Little Lamb").

GRATEFUL DEAD - Dave's Picks Vol.1 - Live At Mosque, Richmond, VA, May 25, 1977 (2012)
Dave's Picks Volume 1 is a three-CD live album by the rock band the Grateful Dead. It was recorded on May 25, 1977, at the Mosque in Richmond, Virginia, and contains the complete concert from that date. It was released on February 1, 2012. The album is the first in the Dave's Picks series of Grateful Dead archival releases, the successor to the Road Trips series.[6] It is a limited edition of 12,000 individually numbered copies. The cover art, by Scott McDougall, depicts the hands of two skeletons in outer space, fighting with lightsabers. This is a reference to the film Star Wars, which was released the same date that the concert was recorded.
The song list from 5/25/77 might not reveal much out of the ordinary (though it's great selection of tunes), but the playing is definitely extraordinary. The first set contains outstanding versions of favorites such as "Mississippi Half-Step," "Jack Straw," "Cassidy" and "Lazy Lightning" > "Supplication." And the second set is primo-grade '77 from start to finish. The buoyant "Scarlet Begonias" > "Fire on the Mountain" that kicks things off sets the tone, but then the rest of the set is a deftly played medley starting with "Estimated" and moving into "He's Gone," a primal drum workout from Mickey and Bill, a heart-pounding version of "The Other One" that's split by "Wharf Rat" (the only time those songs were played in that sequence), a joyful "Wheel," and then a double-dose of Chuck Berry to bring it all back to rock 'n' roll basics. Talk about a thrill ride! The three-disc Dave's Picks, Volume One was mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman, includes a colorful booklet with photos and a lively historical essay, and comes in a digipak made of 100% recycled and PCW materials. - amazon.com

This release stretches Mato's already established musicianship into a hard-hitting, guitar-driven package of musical excursions and playful songwriting. Joining Mato on the opening song is the soulful Jonny Lang. 'Free Yourself, Free Your Mind' is a hook laden track providing the groundwork for two true guitar masters to jam it out without borders or fences. The duo has been working together on the Experience Hendrix Tour for a number of years along with other guitar heroes including Kenny Wayne Shepard, Robert Randolph and Los Lobos legend, David Hidalgo. Mato mentions what an honor and learning experience the tour has been for him. - amazon.com

THE TRAVELING WILBURYS - Greatest Hits: Unreleased Masters (2012)
The Traveling Wilburys (sometimes shortened to the Wilburys) were an English–American supergroup consisting of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty, accompanied by drummer Jim Keltner. The band recorded two albums in 1988 and 1990, though Orbison died before the second was recorded.
"Wilbury" was a slang term first used by Harrison during the recording of Cloud Nine (1987) with Lynne. Referring to recording errors created by some faulty equipment, Harrison jokingly remarked to Lynne, "We'll bury 'em in the mix". Thereafter, they used the term for any small error in performance and the term was used again when the group were together. Harrison sested "The Trembling Wilburys" as the group's name; instead, Lynne sested "Traveling", with which the group agreed. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the two Traveling Wilburys albums had limited availability and were out of print in most areas. Harrison, as primary holder of the rights, did not reissue them before his death in 2001. In June 2007, the two albums were reissued as The Traveling Wilburys Collection, a box set including both albums on CD (with bonus tracks) and a DVD featuring a twenty-four minute band documentary and a collection of music videos.

V.A. - The Influence of Jimmie Rodgers: Let Me Be Your Sidetrack (2009) ![]()
![]()
![]()
![]()
![]()
6-CD mini box with 188-page booklet. There is no shortage of legendary figures in country music. Arguably, none has been more influential than Jimmie Rodgers. In a career that spanned less than six years (1927-1933), Rodgers recorded 110 songs. 108 of those were subsequently recorded by other artists, a tradition that began in the late 1920s and continues to this day. That is a 'cover ratio' unmatched by any of country music's historic figures, including Hank Williams. Rodgers' influence extended far beyond songwriting. The Singing Brakeman also provided a blues-infused approach to performance that became a stylistic template for the careers of countless country singers. Rodgers' recordings remind us that hybrid music began well before Elvis Presley and Sun Records.
On the 75th anniversary of Jimmie Rodgers' death, Bear Family Records documents the extent of his influence by gathering together a remarkable collection of cover recordings by artists ranging from country icons like Gene Autry, Jimmie Davis, Hank Snow, Lefty Frizzell, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Bill Monroe, Merle Haggard and Ernest Tubb to pop and rock legends like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Rick Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis and Jerry Garcia. The 1997 Songs of Jimmie Rodgers: A Tribute CD, originally released on Bob Dylan's Egyptian Records imprint and featuring the rock artists mentioned above, is out of print as a single disc but is contained whole here.
Comprising a total of 159 tracks on six CDs, this unprecedented collection begins to do justice to Jimmie Rodgers' staggering legacy. The mini-box also offers Bear Family's usual lavish production values and attention to detail, including rare vintage photographs and detailed notes by music historians Carey Ginell, Tony Russell, and Dave Samuelson. A companion piece to Bear Family's six-disc collection of Jimmie Rodgers' own recordings, this is the ultimate and richly deserved tribute to Rodgers' influence within and beyond country music. For fans of either country or popular music, this collection is truly essential fare.

DAVID CLAYTON - THOMAS - In Concert: A Musical Biography (2006)
The once and future lead singer of Blood, Sweat & Tears was recorded live at Toronto’s Opera House on October 26th and 27th, 2005. It’s a musical biography of sorts, reflecting the history and legacy of an incredibly prolific career. The album is comprised of songs Clayton-Thomas either wrote or performed with Blood Sweat & Tears—from ’60s classics like “Spinning Wheel” and “Go Down Gamblin” to ’70s and ’80s hits like the bebop gem “Gimme That Wine”—as well as songs culled from his first Justin Time album "Aurora" (2005)—the Billie Holiday-penned “Don’t Explain” and David’s own “Wild Women & Po’ Boys”.
The former Blood, Sweat & Tears singer is in fine voice on this live 2005 retrospective of his notable successes with the jazz-rock group and solo. Well-known musical memorabilia, such as his version of Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child," and the BS&T originals "And When I Die," "Spinning Wheel," and "(You've Made Me) So Very Happy," make this set an entertaining jaunt down memory lane, while a sensitive reading of Holiday's "God Bless the Child" puts the bombast of "Lucretia MacEvil" into perspective. - cduniverse.com

GRAHAM NASH - Reflections: The Definitive Collection (2009)
Graham Nash is a British singer-songwriter known for his light tenor vocals and for his songwriting contributions with the British pop group The Hollies, and with the folk-rock band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
Perhaps the most underrated member of CSN&Y quartet, this 3-CD retrospective spanning 40 years reminds us that Graham Nash's importance and value to that alchemical blending was never so much his writing but his unrivaled ear for harmony. Arranged chronologically, REFLECTIONS spans Nash’s recordings from 1967 to 2007, starting with a trio of singles he released with The Hollies in 1967: “On A Carousel,” “Carrie Anne” and “King Midas In Reverse.” Nash left the group a year later, joining with Crosby and Stills to record the trio’s self-titled album, which earned them the Grammy® for “Best New Artist.” REFLECTIONS gathers several songs from that album—and its follow-up, released a few months later with the addition of Young—including “Pre-Road Downs,” “Marrakesh Express,” “Our House” and “Teach Your Children.” The set also includes tracks from the group’s other albums: “Just A Song Before I Go,” “Wasted On The Way” and “Heartland.” Over the years, Crosby and Nash have recorded a number of albums as a duo. REFLECTIONS features several gems from those collaborations with “Immigration Man,” “To The Last Whale,” “Jesus Of Rio” and more. The collection also brings together several classics from Nash’s four solo albums, ranging from the politically-charged (“Military Madness” and “Chicago/We Can Change The World”) to the emotionally raw (“Simple Man” and “Sleep Song”) and the socially conscious (“Barrel Of Pain” and “Chippin’ Away.”)
REFLECTIONS spotlights 32 songs with different mixes and alternate versions that have never been released. Among the highlights is Nash’s solo acoustic demo of “Right Between The Eyes.” Recorded during the Déjŕ Vu session, a live version of the track popped up in 1971 on a CSN&Y live album. The compilation contains six unreleased tracks, including “Water From The Moon,” “Try To Find Me” and “In Your Name,”

MARE EDSTROM & KENN FOX - Way Beyond The Blue (2012) ![]()
Gospel music has been an intrinsic part of the Blues throughout the past century. This collection features Gospel Blues by such influential artists as Mississippi Fred McDowell, Charley Patton, Blind Willie McTell and the Reverend Gary Davis. Edstrom and Fox have brought new energy to these songs, presenting them with new arrangements in a modern setting, while still respecting their origins. Fox's production captures the raucous reality of Gospel Blues, coming straight from Mare's rich background not only as a formidable blues singer but also as a lifelong church musician. The skeleton tracks (drums, rhythm guitar and vocals) were recorded live directly to analog tape, as with Mare's first releases. This combination of production style and live performance gives Way Beyond the Blue a vintage feel that illuminates the vital history of authentic Gospel music. - spiritonerecords.com

THE CULT
Following a succession of name and stylistic changes, the Cult emerged in 1984 as one of England's leading heavy metal revivalists. Picking up the pseudo-mysticism and Native American obsessions of the Doors, the guitar-orchestrations of Led Zeppelin, and the three-chord crunch of AC/DC, while adding touches of post-punk goth rock, the Cult gained a dedicated following in their native Britain with mid-'80s singles like "She Sells Sanctuary" before breaking into the American metal market in the late '80s with "Love Removal Machine." Though they managed one Top Ten in America with 1989's Sonic Temple, the Cult were plagued with off-stage tensions and problems that prevented them from retaining their popularity. The band split in 1995 following a pair of unsuccessful records, but returned on an occasional basis for new records - always anchored by vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy.
