JOE WALSH - Songs For A Dying Planet (1992)

It's hard not to think when listening to Songs for a Dying Planet that Joe Walsh has a profound musical statement that he has yet to make. After quite some time away from his solo recording gig, it figures that Walsh would have some interesting things to say, and a few guitar riffs to unleash. This 1999 Sony release fulfills those expectations to a degree, but the songwriter's weakened comedic instincts and extreme sincerity make Songs for a Dying Planet a difficult recommendation. Things start off fierce and promising as two solid rockers ("Shut Up," "Fairbanks Alaska") lead into one of Walsh's best songs in many years, the slow scorcher "Coyote Love." The sublime ballad "I Know" follows, and at this point Walsh seems to be in a creative zone the likes of which he had not occupied since the early '80s. The momentum shudders as the listless "Certain Situations" leads into the bad political lampoon job "Vote for Me." Humor in rock is a delicate endeavor, and one that Walsh clearly mastered on classics like "Life's Been Good," but within that almost campy structure existed a palpable edge or even danger. The self-parody related more than a little first-hand experience and an undefined tragic subtext that resonated loudly in Walsh's falsetto and his audience as they assessed their personal reality within the coming post-rock world. No such subtlety or importance exists on Songs For a Dying Planet (comedic or otherwise.) Everything is stated rather plainly, as in the sentimental "The Friend Song" where listeners are led directly to the obvious personal sentiments. In earlier work, Walsh covered the descriptions and listeners came to their own meaningful or humorous conclusions naturally, on this record (and much of the musician's work after the mid-'80s) he decides things for himself, and the listener is forced into a passive response, no longer engaged.

DAVID COVERDALE - North Winds (1978) [HD Mastering CD, Japan, 2000]

1978's Northwinds, David Coverdale's second solo album after the demise of Deep Purple, is a powerful dose of blues- and R&B-influenced hard rock. This album -- the final new release on Purple Records -- is also a huge leap forward in quality from the previous year's White Snake, a tentative and generally cautious record. As with White Snake, Northwinds was produced by Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover and is anchored by guitarist Micky Moody and keyboardist Tim Hinckley. Bassist Alan Spenner and drummer Tony Newman comprise the rhythm section. "Keeping on Giving Me Love" is loose and funky and a blowout jam wraps it up. The gorgeous ballad "Northwinds" builds to a gospel-like fervor; Coverdale's voice is warm and smooth and Hinckley's dominant keyboards are supported by Moody's tasteful rhythm guitar. "Give Me Kindness" is a slab of R&B-based hard rock with horns present to add spice. Initially, Coverdale's slow, soft vocals and Hinckley's effective keyboards provide the soul of the splendid "Time & Again," but Graham Preskett's electric violin and, ultimately, Coverdale's surging voice aid the overall swell of power at the finale. "Only My Soul" offers a rich musical stew of introductory organ and acoustic guitar, steady drums, biting little guitar fills, supple bass licks, Glover's synthesizer fill and more electric violin lines from Preskett, but Coverdale's ethereal singing holds it all together. The hard-charging rocker "Breakdown" is about the disintegration of Deep Purple. Spitfire's 2000 remastered CD reissue includes two solid bonus tracks: the spry groove rocker"Shame on the Devil" and the melodic pop/rock song "Sweet Mistreater." The reissue liner notes include an informative essay by Simon Robinson and a handful of rare photos. - allmusic.com

V.A. - A Fair Forgery Of Pink Floyd (2003)

Finally someone has done the "tribute record" right. Over the course of two CDs you get covers of "the hits" (Money, Comfortably Numb, Dogs) and "deep album cuts" (San Tropez, Childhood's End, Not Now John) Most of the arrangements are unique and provide a fresh take on the originals. Even an actual Pink Floyd tribute band (Which One's Pink?) offers something different by recording What Shall We Do Now? a song never released by Pink Floyd on a studio album. This album has a nice mix of recognizable artists and talented unknowns. Like the Pigs and Pyramids album, there's plenty of hard rock to go around with bands like Mike Keneally, Numira, Billion Stars and Samarin, Morgan & Hull LLP (I guess they really do "represent"). Like the well regarded Echoes of Pink CD, there's a generous sprinkling of female vocals (Sally Semrad, Courtney Fairchild, North Green, Becca & Pierre). Like Luther Wright and the Wrongs, there's folky roots rock (Yortoise, Quetzal, 50 Cent Haircut, Graham Parker, Tortfeasor). There's some great "prog" too (Shaun Guerin, S.A.M., Glass, Shark & The Smoke). This record does the impossible -- it appeals universally and simulatanously to Floyd and non-Floyd fans alike. This record belongs in the collection of every fan of rock n roll. - amazon.com

2009 digitally remastered and expended deluxe edition of the British band's 1967 debut album including 11 bonus tracks. Procol Harum's eponymous long-playing debut is here augmented by the inclusion of the timeless 'A Whiter Shade of Pale', the follow-up smash 'Homburg' and a variety of rare and previously unreleased cuts selected by Gary Brooker. For a whole generation 'AWSOP' remains the emblematic anthem of that Summer of Love. And even now, 40 years on, the song remains a haunting tale of mystery and imagination.

JOHN LAWTON & DIANA EXPRESS - The Power Of Mind (2012)

A Brit by birth, John Lawton moved to Hamburg, Germany, when he was with a band called Stone Wall. He stayed there when the band moved on, feeling that this might be the place to get his break. He didn't have to wait long as Lucifer's Friend got in touch with him to have him work with them. He recorded their debut release, Lucifer's Friend, with them. His next group was Les Humphries Singers. He managed to do both of these bands concurrently, as Lucifer's Friend was only a studio group. He continued on doing this double duty until 1976 when he became the new singer for Uriah Heep. He remained with the group for the next three years, leaving to pursue a solo career. However, his album did not light up the charts and Lawton found himself back performing both with Les Humphries Singers and Lucifer's Friend. He also formed a band called Gun Hill and kept himself busy performing with all three of those groups.

From johnlawtonmusic.com:
"The Power of Mind" is a concept album consisting of 14 amazing songs, with positive thinking being the theme. The soulful vocals by John Lawton & powerful instrumentals by D'Xpress will leave you

PINK FAIRIES - Live at the Roundhouse, Previously Unreleased & Twink And The Fairies (1991)

Pink Fairies were an English rock band active in the London (Ladbroke Grove) underground and psychedelic scene of the early 1970s. They promoted free music, drug taking and anarchy and often performed impromptu gigs and other agitprop stunts, such as playing for free outside the gates at the Bath and Isle of Wight pop festivals in 1970, as well as appearing at Phun City, the second Glastonbury and many other free festivals including Windsor and Trentishoe.

Live at the Roundhouse 1975 is a 1982 album of a 1975 concert by the UK underground group Pink Fairies. A one-off reunion concert featuring all five previous members of the group was organised by Ted Carroll, head of Chiswick Records. At the time of this gig, Rudolph was also playing bass for Hawkwind whilst Wallis was playing guitar for Motörhead. The tapes were licensed from Douglas Smith for release in 1982, although only part of the concert was issued, the rest being deemed unsuitable for public consumption. It was pressed on pink vinyl with a cover by long standing collaborator Edward Barker featuring a pig which had become the band's ident. The track "Going Down" is a cover of the Freddie King song, but was erroneously credited to Lou Reed on the original release. When this album was released on CD, several bonus tracks were added. On the CD release, the first five tracks are from the live performance at the Roundhouse. The following six are a collection of previously unreleased tracks, recorded by The Pink Fairies. After this follows a further three tracks, credited to be created by "Twink & The Fairies". - wikipedia

SYD BARRETT - Crazy Diamond: The Complete Recordings (1993)

Like a supernova, Roger "Syd" Barrett burned briefly and brightly, leaving an indelible mark upon psychedelic and progressive rock as the founder and original singer, songwriter, and lead guitarist of Pink Floyd. Barrett was responsible for most of their brilliant first album, 1967's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but left and/or was fired from the band in early 1968 after his erratic behavior had made him too difficult to deal with (he appears on a couple tracks on their second album, A Saucerful of Secrets). Such was his stature within the original lineup that few observers thought the band could survive his departure; in fact, the original group's management decided to keep Syd on and leave the rest of the band to their own devices. Pink Floyd never recaptured the playful humor and mad energy of their work with Barrett.

After a period of hibernation, Barrett re-emerged in 1970 with a pair of albums, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett, which featured considerable support from his former bandmates (especially his replacement, David Gilmour, who produced most of the sessions). Members of Soft Machine also play on these records, which have a ragged, unfinished, and folky feel. Barrett's eccentric humor, sly wordplay, and infectious melodies range from brilliant to chaotic on his solo work. Lacking the taut power of his recordings with the Floyd in 1967, they nevertheless remain fascinating and moving glimpses into a creative psyche gone awry after (it is theorized) too much fame and too many drugs too early. With increasing psychological problems, Barrett withdrew into near-total seclusion after these albums and never released any more material.

Although they attracted little attention upon their release, his albums also attracted a cult audience. Barrett's music and mystique achieved a lasting influence that continues to grow over two decades later. Latter-day new-wave psychedelic acts like Julian Cope, the Television Personalities, and (especially) Robyn Hitchcock acknowledge Barrett's tremendous influence on their work. The Barrett cult became large enough to warrant the release of an entire album of previously unreleased material and outtakes, Opel, in the late '80s, as well as his sessions for the BBC. As for the man himself, after 1973 he remained hidden away at his mother's home in Cambridge, turning away both curious fans and any offers to play music (though he did show up at sessions for Pink Floyd's 1975 album Wish You Were Here, and once the band recognized him, they declined his offer to participate). The occasional photo of Barrett surfaced over the years, revealing him to be a perfectly normal, if grumpy, looking fellow. After battling diabetes for several years, Barrett died peacefully in July 2006 at the age of 60.

This is the Pink Floyd co-founder/ former member's 1993 box set on EMI. Features both of his 1970 solo albums, 'Barrett' & 'The Madcap Laughs', plus the 1989 rarities compilation 'Opel' with six bonus tracks added to it.

ALVIN LEE - The Best Songs (2010)

Lee began to play professionally in a band named The Jaybirds, in 1962, who enjoyed popularity in their native England, but moved on to seek a wider fan base. They began that year to perform in the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany, following closely behind The Beatles. There, with Alvin Lee assuming the permanent role of lead vocalist in addition to that of lead guitarist, they began to build a following. It was not until the band moved to London in 1966 and changed its name, first to Jaybird, dropping 'The' and 's' to make it sound more contemporary; then to Blues Yard (for one gig at the Marquee Club); and finally to Ten Years After, that international success beckoned. The band secured a residency at the Marquee Club, and an invitation to the Windsor Jazz & Blues Festival in 1967 led to their first recording contract. The self titled debut album received airplay on San Francisco, California's underground radio stations and was embraced by listeners, including concert promoter Bill Graham, who invited the band to tour the United States for the first time in 1968. Ten Years After would ultimately tour the U.S. twenty-eight times in seven years, more than any other UK band.

Appearing at the Woodstock Festival, Lee's performance was captured on film in the documentary of the festival and his playing helped catapult him into stardom.[1] Soon the band was playing arenas and stadiums around the globe. Although Lee later lamented that he missed the intimacy of smaller venues, the impact the film made brought his music to a worldwide audience.

Ten Years After had success, releasing ten albums together, but by 1973, Lee was feeling limited by the band's style. Moving to Columbia Records had resulted in a radio hit song, "I'd Love To Change the World," but Lee preferred blues-rock to the pop to which the label steered them. He left Ten Years After after their second Columbia LP. With American gospel singer Mylon LeFevre and George Harrison, Steve Winwood, Ronnie Wood and Mick Fleetwood, he recorded and released On the Road to Freedom, an acclaimed album that was at the forefront of country rock. A year later, in response to a dare, Lee formed Alvin Lee & Company to play a show at the Rainbow in London and released it as a double live album, In Flight. Various members of the band continued on with Lee for his next two albums, Pump Iron and Let it Rock. In late 1975, he played guitar for a couple of tracks on Bo Diddley's The 20th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll all-star album. He finished out the 1970s with Ten Years Later who also released two albums, Rocket Fuel (1978) and Ride On (1979) and toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States.

The 1980s brought another change in Lee's direction, with two albums that were collaborations with Rare Bird's Steve Gould, and a tour with the former John Mayall and Rolling Stones' guitarist Mick Taylor joining his band. Lee's overall musical output includes more than twenty albums, including 1985's Detroit Diesel, and the back to back 1990s collections of Zoom and 1994 (U.S. title I Hear You Rockin' ). Guest artists on both albums included George Harrison. Alvin Lee in Tennessee, recorded with Scotty Moore and D. J. Fontana, was released in 2004. Lee's most recent album, Saguitar, was released in September 2007. - wikipedia

FOREIGNER - Can't Slow Down... When It's Live! (2010)

There are bands that loose their soul when they have to substitute their frontman, some of them turn into deluxe cover bands, some others instead proved to be able to reinvent their career and to start a new life: AC/DC with Brian Johnson, Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio, Iron Maiden with Brice Dickinson, Deep Purple...When Foreigner had to find a substitute for Lou Gramm, many were wondering how the band could keep their strong legacy to their prestigious past. 60 million albums sold, and an amount of hit singles. Kelly Hansen soon showed "how". He is simply one of the most gifted voices you can find in Rock today and his stage presence is impressive. Together with Mick Jones he started a new life for the band. The first album with Hansen "Can't Slow Down" has reached a Top 20 chart position in the USA and Germany and charted Top 40 mostly everywhere else in the world. Foreigner are constantly touring for more than a year, establishing themselves all over the globe as the quintessential American Rock band - despite Jones being proudly English. Together with Mick Jones and Kelly Hansen, a line up of super-talented musicians completes the definitive version of this extraordinary band: Jeff Pilson (ex Dokken) on bass, Tom Gimbel (ex Aerosmith touring band on guitars and sax) and Brian Tichy (Whitesnake) on drums. Jones has also reached unique success as a producer. His work with Van Halen and Billy Joel resulted in two of the best sellers ever in the US music business: "5150" and "Stormfront". - amazon.com

SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY [with LaBamba's Big Band] - Grapefruit Moon - The Songs of Tom Waits (2008)

Southside Johnny Lyon has been fronting one of America's most consistently hard-rocking R&B show bands, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, for well over 30 years, so this album should come as something of a surprise to longtime fans -- here Southside sings a dozen tunes from the songbook of Tom Waits alongside a jazzy, full-bodied big band led by Richie "LaBamba" Rosenberg, a longtime fixture in the Asbury Jukes horn section (and a member of Max 's band on Late Night with Conan O'Brien). While this is very much a change of pace, it's one that both Lyon and Rosenberg handle with confidence and aplomb; Lyon's voice shows a touch more grain than it did in his salad days with the Jukes, but his sense of phrasing and showman's touch is superb, and he brings swagger, heart, and sincerity to every performance here, and when Waits shows up for a duet on "Walk Away," the two trade lines as if they've been singing together for years. Lyon is also a shrewd judge of material, and the dozen numbers here fit his personality and vocal approach like a glove, especially "Please Call Me Baby," "New Coat of Paint," and "All the Time in the World." Rosenberg's charts are robust and imaginative, honoring the strength of Waits' melodies while giving the songs a chance to stretch out in new directions, and given that a majority of these songs came from the Beefheart-influenced period following Swordfishtrombones, these versions give them a new and very different musical personality steeped in big-band jazz, supper club blues, and classic pop. Is this rock & roll? Not quite, but it's got a beat, it swings hard, and it boasts a great singer and a great band working their way through a first-class set of songs; Grapefruit Moon is an experiment that succeeds, and hopefully it won't be too long before Lyon and Rosenberg try something like this again. - allmusic.com

V.A. - Satisfaction: Covers & Cookies Of The Stones (2005)

This double-CD set of '60s and '70s vintage renditions of classic Rolling Stones songs is a lot of fun, starting with Ananda Shankar's sitar-driven version of "Jumping Jack Flash," in excellent fidelity -- we jump to the 1971 soul version of "Satisfaction" by the Detroit-based hippie ensemble the Assemblege, who evidently looked like the MC5 but sounded like War. There are a lot of worthy obscurities rescued on this set amid the well-known names such as Muddy Waters ("Let's Spend the Night Together"), Merry Clayton ("Gimme Shelter"), P.P. Arnold ("As Tears Go By"), Herbie Mann ("Bitch"), Rotary Connection ("Ruby Tuesday"), and Odetta ("No Expectations") -- probably the two oddest cuts are the Staple Singers "This May Be the Last Time," not a cover but, rather, the gospel number that inspired and lay behind the Stones' "The Last Time," and Rochester, New York-based Wilmer & the Dukes' version of "I'm Free," though Wayne Gibson's 1966 cover of "Under My Thumb" was similarly obscure until it became a Northern soul hit eight years later. None of what's here is not worth hearing, and it's mighty handy as well as a good idea to assemble all of these cuts in one place. Disc One presents the original tracks intact and complete, while Disc Two offers 14 of the 15 numbers from the previous disc in what is referred to as a "4hero mix," pulling them all together in cross-faded glory, with only the Staples' track left out. The annotation is surprisingly thorough despite its sketchy structure, even about the most obscure artists here, and the music speaks for itself; the whole set represents a good idea that was executed very well. - allmusic.com

SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY AND THE ASBURY JUKES - Pills And Ammo (2010)

It's "Harder Than It Looks," growls Southside Johnny Lyon on the opening track to his first album of original material with his ever-changing Jukes band since 2002's Going to Jukesville. And even though the double-entendre lyrics refer to the sexual side of aging ("Got to keep it up, keep it up, keep it up/It's harder than it looks"), they could just as well apply to maintaining a band and a career since 1974, as Lyon winds into the final quarter of his life. Longtime cohorts guitarist Bobby Bandiera and keyboardist/songwriter/co-producer Jeff Kazee return to bring some consistency for an outfit that Lyon figures has seen nearly 100 different musicians pass through its ranks over the decades. But aside from Johnny's deteriorating voice losing some of its range as he hovers in his mid-sixties, this is an older, wiser, and somewhat more bluesy collection of rock and soul. In comparison, the ageless Gary "U.S." Bonds assists on the second-line New Orleans-influenced "Umbrella in My Drink," a swinging party tune that makes a perfect duet. But Johnny and the band break out the bluesy rockers in the appropriately titled "One More Night to Rock" (with some red harp work demonstratingc.com Lyons' perpetually underrated harmonica skills) and the Chuck Berry/Big Bopper-styled "Keep on Moving." R&B-fueled, horn-propelled tunes such as the driving "Cross That Line" and "Heartbreak City" could have been included on any of the Jukes' previous albums over the past 35 years. The songwriting is top-notch throughout, with singalong choruses and rough-and-tumble melodies worthy of the act's deep history and catalog in similarly styled rock and soul. The steamy, swampy "Strange Strange Feeling" coolly changes pace and the closing ballad "Thank You" is a touching remembrance of a lost love that finds Johnny milking the last drop of emotion from the heartfelt lyrics and stripped-down arrangement. Recording on his own Leroy label frees the singer to release this style of non-commercial music without interference from major-label suits. In Pills and Ammo he hits the sweet spot, producing a solid contemporary Jukes album that makes no compromises and should satisfy longtime fans, even if it might not create new ones. - allmusic.com

THE BYRDS - Preflyte (1964) [2012 Original Recording Remastered]

In 1969, Together Records released Preflyte, a collection of the Byrds' raw demos dating back to their earliest days in 1964 (Columbia later reissued it in 1973.) The release was timely, with the success of the Easy Rider soundtrack and spin-off groups like Crosby, Stills and Nash and the Flying Burrito Brothers. It was a chance for 1960s fans to hear their pre-"Tambourine Man" sound, including a couple of songs that never made it to the big-time (David Crosby's wistful "The Airport Song", Gene Clark's tender "For Me Again"). Alternative, gentler versions of later favourites like "You Won't Have To Cry" and the McGuinn/Clark composition "You Showed Me" (later a hit for the Turtles) are included, and already McGuinn's trademark jangling 12-string Rickenbacker guitar sound is apparent. The album was later reissued as In The Beginning with tracks added and deleted, but this Poptones version is as Preflyte originally appeared--a highly enjoyable slice of a great band in its embryonic stages.

From Los Angeles California The Byrds came to prominence in 1965, with the worldwide number 1 Mr. Tambourine Man . This collection is pre-Columbia material, and is the most definitive collection yet. Previously available on Sundazed records as a 40 track collection we have added an extra 20 minutes of material only recently found. The package has been re-mastered and redesigned.

DAVE ALVIN - Eleven Eleven - Expanded Edition (2012) thumbup

Dave Alvin is a Grammy award winning guitarist, singer and songwriter and a proponent of Americana music. He is a former member of The Blasters, X, and The Knitters.

"Starting in May 2011, my great band, The Guilty Ones and I hit the highways blasting and rocking our blues in every bar, theatre and joint that we could get into across America. Some of ‘em we even hit twice! As you might guess, I love playing with this band and I think it shows in the live performance that was recorded last summer (2011) at The Ark in Ann Arbor. We were in Cincinnati the night before we taped this show, and we were in Chicago the night after, so this is a document of one night (mistakes, sweat and all) traveling down the endless interstate. I’m happy to be able to release this to you on DVD in a new swanky package of Eleven Eleven (expanded edition), complete with three previously unreleased songs from that album’s sessions. JOHN MAYER - Born And Raised (2012)

John Clayton Mayer is an American pop and blues rock musician, singer-songwriter, recording artist, and music producer. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut and raised in Fairfield, Connecticut, he attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. He moved to Atlanta in 1997, where he refined his skills and gained a following, and he now lives in New York City. His first two studio albums, Room for Squares and Heavier Things, did well commercially, achieving multi-platinum status. In 2003, he won a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Your Body Is a Wonderland."

Mayer began his career performing mainly acoustic rock, but gradually began a transition towards the blues genre in 2005 by collaborating with renowned blues artists such as B. B. King, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton, and by forming the John Mayer Trio. The blues influence can be heard throughout his 2005 live album Try! with the John Mayer Trio and his third studio album Continuum, released in September 2006. At the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in 2007 Mayer won Best Pop Vocal Album for Continuum and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Waiting on the World to Change". BEE GEES - Mythology (2010) [In memory of Robin - R.I.P.]

Robin Hugh Gibb (1949 - 2012) was a British singer and songwriter. He is best known as a member of the Bee Gees, co-founded with his twin brother Maurice and older brother Barry. He had another younger brother, Andy Gibb, who was also a very popular solo singer. Born in the Isle of Man to English parents, the family later moved to Manchester before settling in Brisbane, Australia. Gibb began his career as part of the family trio and when the group found their first success they returned to the United Kingdom where they achieved worldwide fame. In 2004, the Bee Gees received their CBEs from the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace for their "contribution to music". With record sales estimated in excess of 200 million units, the Bee Gees became one of the most successful pop groups of all time. After a career spanning six decades, Gibb last performed on stage in February 2012 supporting injured British servicemen and women at a charity concert at the London Palladium.[4] On 20 May 2012, Gibb died at the age of 62 after a lengthy battle with colorectal cancer.

"Mythology" is a box set compilation of recordings by the Gibb Brothers, mostly performed as The Bee Gees, arranged in a four disc set each highlighting each Gibb brother. Barry and Robin chose their own songs (presumably their personal favorites), with Maurice's songs selected by his widow Yvonne and Andy's songs selected by his daughter Peta. All of the songs on Barry's & Robin's disc have already been released on CD, though several are receiving new remasters by Rhino/Reprise, which is true for all the songs in this set. Maurice's disc includes two unreleased tracks from 1999, "Angel of Mercy" and "The Bridge", as well as his 1984 single "Hold Her In Your Hand", which makes its CD debut. Missing from Maurice's disc is his jazzy "My Thing" from 1970 and a rare B-side, "I've Come Back" from 1970, which has never been released on CD. Andy's disc contains his previously unreleased final song from 1987, "Arrow Through the Heart", which was briefly heard on Behind the Music: Andy Gibb - wikipedia

JOE BONAMASSA - Dust Bowl (2011) & Driving Towards The Daylight (2012)

Dust Bowl (2011)
American blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa’s twelfth studio album, Dust Bowl, fluidly mixes acoustic numbers, rock riffs, just a touch of Nashville country and even a headbanging cover of Free’s “Heartbreaker”, a nod to Bonamassa’s love of 70s British blues-rock. Bonamassa is joined by some special guests, including John Hiatt, ex-Deep Purple singer Glenn Hughes and Jason Bonham (son of the legendary Led Zeppelin drummer, John).
TRACKS:
01. Slow Train 02. Dust Bowl 03. Tennessee Plates (with John Hiatt) 04. The Meaning Of The Blues 05. Black Lung Heartache 06. You Better Watch Yourself 07. The Last Matador Of Bayonne 08. Heartbreaker (with Glenn Hughes) 09. No Love On The Street 10. The Whale That Swallowed Jonah 11. Sweet Rowena (with Vince Gill) 12. Prisoner

Driving Towards The Daylight (2012)
Recorded at Studio At The Palms in Las Vegas, NV, The Village Recorder in Los Angeles, CA and The Cave in Malibu, CA, Driving Towards The Daylight is a balanced back-to-basics album that highlights Bonamassa s signature style of roots blues with rock-and-roll guts, while honoring the traditions of the original blues musicians. We ve taken some really traditional old blues songs the Howlin Wolf song Who s Been Talkin ? and the Robert Johnson song Stones In My Passway, and we ve tried to imagine how they would do them in a rock context, said Shirley. It s a very exciting return to the blues in a very visceral way. It s vibrant and it s gutsy and it s really, really red. To challenge Joe and move him out of his comfort zone, a unique group of musicians was gathered including Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford (guitar), Blondie Chaplan (guitar), Anton Fig (drums and percussion), Arlan Schierbaum (keyboard), Michael Rhodes (bass), Carmine Rojas (bass), Jeff Bova and The Bovaland Brass, Pat Thrall (guitar), and Brad s son Harrison Whitford (guitar). The album features five Bonamassa-penned originals including the bruising opener Dislocated Boy, the road warrior title track (and first single) Driving Towards The Daylight, I Got All You Need, Heavenly Soul, and Somewhere Trouble Don t Go. Other tracks include Bonamassa s versions of Tom Waits New Coat Of Paint, Lonely Town Lonely Street, by Bill Withers (Lean On Me, Ain t No Sunshine) and A Place In My Heart by Bernie Marsden of White Snake (Here I Go Again). On the album closer, Australian rock singer Jimmy Barnes sings lead vocals on his 1987 hit "Too Much Ain't Enough Love."
TRACKS:
01. Dislocated Boy 02. Stones In My Passway 03. Driving Towards The Daylight 04. Who's Been Talking 05. I Got All You Need 06. A Place In My Heart 07. Lonely Town Lonely Street 08. Heavenly Soul 09. New Coat Of Paint 10. Somewhere Trouble Dont Go 11. Too Much Aint Enough Love (With Jimmy Barnes)

THE BUNCH - Rock On (1972)

Organized by Trevor Lucas and Sandy Denny following the breakup of Fotheringay, the Bunch features an all-star cast from the British folk-rock scene paying homage to their roots before they began their musical trek down the traditional path of Francis James Childs and Cecil Sharp. Recorded in January of 1972, the Bunch was just that, a one-off by a bunch of friends getting together to play the music of some of their early idols, including Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams and Chuck Berry. Lucas, Denny, Richard Thompson, Linda (Thompson) Peters, Ashley Hutchings, and various other members of the extended Fairport Convention family treat the music with a certain reverence while at the same time injecting it with a playfulness and ragged British charm. Sandy Denny, who is touted in the liner notes as "Britain's first lady of song," delivers two of her finest performances on record, a lovely duet with Peters on the Everly Brothers' "When Will I Be Loved" (which predated Linda Ronstadt's cover by two years), as well as her tender reading of the Buddy Holly obscurity "Learning the Game." Other highlights include Richard Thompson's spirited working of Dion's "My Girl the Month of May," Ashley Hutchings' deadpan "Nadine" and Peters' "Loco-Motion." The original U.K. release included a flexi-single of ex-Fotheringay drummer Gerry Conway performing "Let There Be Drums." [Originally released in 1972, Rock On was reissued on CD in the U.K. in 2003, and in Japan in 2004.] - allmusic.com

PAUL & LINDA McCARTNEY - RAM (1971) [2012 Special Edition]

Ram is an album by Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney, released in 1971, the only album credited to the pair. Set against the backdrop of the legal action taking place in Britain's High Court with the dissolution of The Beatles partnership, following their break-up the year before, Ram was the second of two albums McCartney released between quitting The Beatles and forming Wings, whose future drummer Denny Seiwell played on the record, alongside the McCartneys and session musicians. Three singles were released from the album: the American number 1 hit "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", the minor British hit "The Back Seat of My Car", and "Eat at Home", which appeared in Europe, Japan and Australia.

At the beginning of his solo career, McCartney took the term rather literally, recording virtually alone, playing and singing nearly all the parts himself. Nowhere is that approach more effective than on RAM, arguably his finest solo recording. Admittedly, he had a little help from guitarist Hugh McCracken and a couple of others here and there, but for the most part, this is Paul's show. Instead of succumbing to self-indulgence, though, he used this forum to focus his artistic energies, thus turning out some of the best songs of his post-Beatles career. The opening "Too Many People" is an appealingly melodic rocker that combines the two sides of McCartney--melodious popster and unabashed rocker--to unprecedented effect. He gets bluesy on "3 Legs," homespun-acoustic on "Heart of the Country," and appealingly jocular on the radio hit "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," whose whimsy recalls his best light-hearted Beatles efforts. What he maintains throughout all this is his vision, never getting sidetracked into loopy experimentalism or sentimental mush. RAM is McCartney at the peak of his considerable powers, spontaneous-sounding but still expertly crafted. - cduniverse.com

GOSSIP - A Joyful Noise (2012)

2012 album from the Alt-Rock band fronted by Beth Ditto. A Joyful Noise is a blend of Soul, Gospel, Rock, Funk, Disco, Punk, Passion and Rebellion, Recorded in both Xenomania, Higgins' studio in England, and KBC Studios in Portland, Oregon, A Joyful Noise stays true to Gossip's trademark brash and unapologetic nature - that is, as true as possible for a band that is constantly reinventing itself and pushing boundaries. Working with Higgins, Gossip sought to create their own brand of pop. Ditto proclaimed, "I spent the whole year listening to ABBA and not listening to the radio," accounting for the pulsing energy of A Joyful Noise. The album's infectious tracks will certainly be welcomed by fans who are already entranced by Gossip's insanely danceable beats, and will no doubt lure in many more. - amazon.com

DONNA SUMMER (1948 - 2012)

Donna Summer's title as the "Queen of Disco" wasn't mere hype -- she was one of the very few disco performers to enjoy a measure of career longevity, and her consistent chart success was rivaled in the disco world only by the Bee Gees. Summer was certainly a talented vocalist, trained as a powerful gospel belter, but then again, so were many of her contemporaries. Of major importance in setting Summer apart were her songwriting abilities and her choice of talented collaborators in producers / songwriters Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, which resulted in a steady supply of high-quality (and, often, high-concept) material. But what was more, few vocalists could match the sultry, unfettered eroticism Summer brought to many of her best recordings, which seemed to embody the spirit of the disco era perfectly. The total package made Summer the ultimate disco diva, one of the few whose star power was even bigger than the music.

Summer died on May 17, 2012. The Associated Press reports that she died in the morning at her home in Key West, Florida at age 63 following a battle with cancer. - R.I.P.

Awards:
Best Original Song - Oscar, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 1978, for "Last Dance"; Best Female R&B Vocal Performance Grammy, National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, 1979, for "Last Dance"; Best Female Rock Vocal Performance Grammy, 1980, for "Hot Stuff"; Best Inspirational Performance Grammy, 1984, for "He's a Rebel," and 1985, for "Forgive Me"; (with Giorgio Moroder) Best Dance Recording Grammy, 1998, for "Carry On."

T.REX - Bolan At The Beeb (2007)

What a wonderful collection. Ok many fans will say many of these BBC recordings have been released before which they have on separate CD collections over the years. Difference is Mark Paytrees not only has written the book that comes with this but reseached, tracked down better recorded versions & added many from BBC list that at first seemed lost forever. I have original recorded releases & can say much has been cleaned up only a few now have DJs talking over in fact very few. I sat & listened to these & thought how great Marc was to record for BBC & make tracks sound like straight from his discs at the time. It is only when you listen & hear some lyrics changes you remember these are BBC studio sessons. I loved the various versions of Elemental Child with guitar solo's never being the same some are mind blowing. What is also on this 3 disc box set is the BBC concert in France in two parts & you swear it was not live till they clap at the end as sound is so good. I believe this is fantasic to have in any fans collection of course you have to have loved Marc's work in Tyrannosaurus Rex too to buy this but even these sessons are so different to the original records. Worth every penny to any fan.

TASTE - Live Taste (1971) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Taste was an Irish rock and blues band formed in 1966 that gained fame in large part because of their unique style, and the talent and charisma of the band's founder, songwriter and musician Rory Gallagher. Taste (originally "The Taste") was formed in Cork, Ireland, in August 1966 as a trio consisting of Rory Gallagher on guitars and vocals, Eric Kitteringham on bass, and Norman Damery on drums. The band, a power trio, also moved on to make history as one of the first three acts to perform on the televised studio program, Rockpalast, in Germany.

"Live Taste" is the third album and first live album by Irish rock band Taste, released in 1971. It was recorded live at Montreux Casino and released shortly after the band broke up.

SIMON McBRIDE - Nine Lives (2012) thumbup

Simon McBride started playing the guitar when he was ten. By age 15 and entirely self-taught, he was good enough to enter Guitarist Magazine’s Young Guitarist of The Year, a performance competition staged at Wembley Conference Centre, which he won against strong competition. Even before that achievement, Simon was endorsed by the notable American guitar builder Paul Reed Smith, a relationship that continues to this day. Other PRS artists include Al Di Meola, Santana and Buddy Guy. Observers of the blues-rock scene are calling Simon McBride the natural heir to Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore. Like these icons he hails from Ireland and from Moore’s hometown, Belfast. He is an astoundingly good guitarist, a fine singer and a prolific songwriter.

In 2012 he released Nine Lives, an album of mostly live recordings proving that on stage he can make a sound every bit as good as his studio albums. He delivers powerful renditions of songs from his two studio albums together with a previously unreleased song (Fire Me Up). The album also carries four bonus tracks in which he reprises songs in a stripped down acoustic format, demonstrating just how natural a guitarist and singer he is. - simonmcbride.net

MEENA - Feel Me (2012)

When Meena Cryle sings the words " My mother told me every day I should be strong" on the opening track of her new CD, it becomes strikingly apparent that she must have taken those words to heart. "Whenever something in my life moves me, I sit down with my guitar and sing about it", she once explained in an interview with the magazine CONCERTO. All these emotions are transformed into music in an extraordinary and mature way on "Feel Me", her second album for the prestigious Ruf Records label. While her previous outing "Try Me" already held a wonderful promise for things yet to come, the current release presents itself as a true masterpiece. From the tough as nails Blues-Rock of "Movin' On", which kicks off the album, to the classic Blues-Sounds of "Stay Away From Me Baby" and all the way through to the ballad that closes the album - "My Performance Is Over". It is that very same musical universe that the entire album traverses. On one hand a rough and ready, uncompromising approach, as shown in her cover of the legendary Etta James' song "Come To Mama", and on the other hand a deeply empathetic, sometimes tender openess as shown in a song dedicated to the memory of her brother - "If I Meet You One More Time". Songs like the Desmond Child cover, "I Was Made For Loving You" - which also introduces the amazing horn section of the Hot Pants Road Club - or the title-track "Feel Me" showcase Meena's irresistable feel for Southern Soul, another facet of her artistry which sets her apart from most contemporaries. It is a seamless transition to the hard-sliding Blues of "Beg Like A Sinner" and the deep, dark groove of "Lord Have Mercy". - rufrecord.de

COLD CHISEL - No Plans (2012)

2012 album from the Australian rockers, their first studio album in 14 years. No Plans features 13 songs drawn from recording sessions across 2010 and 2011 and was produced by Kevin Shirley, with additional production by Nash Chambers. The album features the final recorded performances by drummer Steve Prestwich who passed away in January 2011 and also one of his compositions 'I Got Things To Do'. The album includes 'All For You' and 'HQ454 Monroe', two songs that Cold Chisel played on their record-breaking Light The Nitro Tour in 2011 and 11 previously unheard songs. Forming in Adelaide in 1973, and playing a mix of classic rock and blues, it was Cold Chisel's breakthrough debut released in 1978 that gave them their hit Khe San; and later a string of others that included Bow River, Cheap Wine, Flame Trees and You Got Nothing I Want. Over the years band members have battled addictions, arguments, lengthy tours and difficult recording experiences, but throughout have managed to create music that's embedded in the fabric of Australian culture.

SALLY OLDFIELD - Mirrors (2000)

Sally Patricia Oldfield is a singer-songwriter, sister of composers Mike Oldfield and Terry Oldfield. Oldfield's musical career started in 1968, when she founded the folk music duo The Sallyangie together with her brother Mike. The duo recorded their first and only album at the recommendation of Pentangle band guitarist, John Renbourn, whom Oldfield met at the Troubadour Folk Club in Bristol. The album Children of the Sun was recorded in August 1968. The songs on it are mainly written by Oldfield, and the album contained some of her brother's early guitar work. Guesting were Terry Cox on drums and Ray Warleigh on flute. Oldfield's debut solo album, Water Bearer, was released in 1978. Her track, "Mirrors", peaked at #19 in the UK Singles Chart, spanning 1978 and 1979, and remained in that chart for thirteen weeks. Since then, she has released twelve solo albums. On the demise of her record label Bronze Records in 1984, Oldfield relocated to Germany where her musical career was based from that time. Most of her albums from 1983 onwards were not released in the UK. She worked with many German record producers and musicians, including Gunther Mende and Candy DeRouge. Oldfield regularly appeared on national television and radio, and undertook several European concert tours, the last being in Germany in 2003. Oldfield provided background vocals in sections of brother Mike's albums Tubular Bells and Ommadawn. She reprised her role for the 2003 re-recording, Tubular Bells 2003. In addition, she worked on her other brother Terry's recordings. She sang "Shadow of the Hierophant" on Steve Hackett's 1975 album, Voyage of the Acolyte. - wikipedia

VINCE ESQUIRE - First Offense (2012)

Excellent debut disc by this first-rate blues/rock axeslinger from Hawaii featuring 9 tracks of killer, straight up, Texas-inspired, string bendin' guitar mojo. Produced by seasoned bassist Mark Epstein (Johnny Winter / Joe Bonamassa) who also lays down the low-end bottom kool on the dynamic First Offense disc. Includes a bad-ass, axe-rippin' live version of Rock Me Baby (Bonus Track).

Vince has recently completed recording his second record, "Songs In The Key of E", with multi-instrumentalist/producer Dave Cochrane, who has worked with artists such as The Commodores, Lionel Ritchie, Paula Abdul, LL Cool J and Public Enemy, and drummer Josh Greenbaun who has performed the likes of River Phoenix and Lenny Kravitz. The album will be released under D.R.I.V.E entertainment in the near future.

THE FORD BLUES BAND WITH ROBBEN FORD & CHRIS CAIN - The Butterfield / Bloomfield Concert (2006)

Even though the Ford Blues Band has never had a problem putting across mediocre material, songwriting is not one of the outfit's strong points. With successful studio albums covering both Michael Bloomfield and his old boss Paul Butterfield already in Ford Blues Band's catalog, the group plays to its strengths with a live recording, cherrypicking the best songs from both and adding the raw energy that live concerts typically generate. The result is a crackling disc that is not surprisingly a showcase for guitarists Robben Ford, Chris Cain and Volker Strifler as well as harmonica ace Andy Just. Despite liner notes that frustratingly don't specify which of the three guitarists plays lead on the tracks -- it only states which side of the speakers the musician is relegated to, which can be confusing -- or the dates of the recordings, this is a rollicking performance as the Ford Blues Band charges through the songs with passion and energy. Out of the eight tracks, only six pertain directly to the titular stars, with "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" (aping a version by Butterfield) and a ten minute, slow blues workout "Blues for MB" a bit on the side. The performances of these are hot, but it does detract slightly from the concept and there were plenty of other tunes more directly associated with the musicians that could have been chosen. Regardless, there are too few bands that even attempt to perform Butterfield's classic "East West" instrumental (here titled "East/West Redux") so even if, at only nine minutes, this is on the short side (the original ran 13), it's a thrilling reminder of the groundbreaking aspects of Butterfield and Bloomfield in their prime. - allmusic.com

SANTANA - Shape Shifter (2012)

2012 release from the guitar legend. Shape Shifter is Carlos Santana's 36th album and is a 13-song instrumental tour de force featuring tracks spanning from the late 1990's to the present and comprises mostly original compositions that have been stashed away for such an instrumental project. Carlos has dedicated Shape Shifter to Native Americans. Referencing recent official apologies to the native peoples of Australia and the U.S., he says, "I encourage any and all countries (that have not as yet done so) to acknowledge the first people of their land, and make this a collective global effort." Among the noteworthy songs on the album are "Mr. Szabo" - an homage to Hungarian jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo, who composed the Santana classic "Gypsy Queen" - and "Eres la Luz," the only tune featuring vocals, which are provided by Santana singers Andy Vargas and Tony Lindsay. Closing out Shape Shifter are "Canela" and "Ah, Sweet Dancer," two songs that include guest appearances from Carlos' son, pianist Salvador Santana. - amazon.com

WILLIE NELSON - Heroes (2012)

Returning to the Columbia/Sony family after nearly two decades away, Willie Nelson once again tries to be everything to everybody on 2012's Heroes, an appealingly misshapen collection of classics, contemporaries, and originals. Heroes -- its title signifying no great concept -- is roughly divided into quarters, with part of the album devoted to the Western swing and Texas country he's always loved to sing, part consisting of new songs from Willie, part originals from his son Lukas, and part covers of newer, rock-oriented tunes from the likes of Tom Waits, Eddie Vedder, and Chris Martin. Each of these categories is a bit hit-or-miss, either succumbing to cutesy novelty (the dope-smoking anthem "Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die," complete with country cadences from a non-rapping Snoop Dogg) or laziness, and there's a wee bit too much Lukas Nelson scattered throughout the record, with the son of the father singing on no less than nine of the album's 14 songs. This can be too much of a strong spice, obscuring the overall flavor of the music, but Lukas contributes a couple of the record's best songs in "Every Time He Drinks He Thinks of Her" and "The Sound of Your Memory," songs that fit well next to a quite beautiful version of Vedder's "Just Breathe" and yet another strong, swinging rendition of "My Window Faces the South." And so Heroes kind of winds up summarizing all that's good and bad about Willie as he approaches his 80th birthday: he's open to everything but has no innate editor, so he whiffs as often as he connects, but when he does connect, it's a wonder to behold...and somehow he can still surprise whenever he sings those old songs. - cduniverse.com

01. A Horse Called Music (With Merle Haggard) 02. Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die (With Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson & Jamey Johnson) 03. That's All There Is To This Song 04. THE STILLS-YOUNG BAND - Long May You Run (1976)

Long May You Run is an album credited to The Stills-Young Band, a collaboration between Stephen Stills and Neil Young, released in 1976 on Reprise Records. It peaked at #26 on the Billboard 200, and was certified gold in the U.S. by the RIAA. It is the sole studio release by Stills and Young in tandem outside of their work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The album's advance single, "Long May You Run", peaked at #71 on the UK singles chart, and was an elegy for Neil Young's first car, a 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse. This was apparently a different hearse than the one Stills spotted Young driving around Los Angeles in 1966 which led to the formation of Buffalo Springfield. The single "Midnight on the Bay" bubbled under the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #105. "Long May You Run" was performed by Young on the final broadcast of The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien on January 22, 2010, and during the closing ceremonies for the Vancouver Olympics on February 28, 2010. - wikipedia

GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS - It's Only Rock 'N Roll (2012)

George Thorogood is an American blues rock vocalist/guitarist from Wilmington, Delaware, United States, known for his hit song "Bad to the Bone" as well as for covers of blues standards such as Hank Williams' "Move It On Over" and John Lee Hooker's "House Rent Boogie/One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer". Another favorite is a cover of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?". George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers have released sixteen studio albums, including two that were certified Platinum and six that have been certified Gold. The band has sold fifteen million albums worldwide. The band is credited with the early success of Rounder Records.

A blues-rock guitarist who draws his inspiration from Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor, and Chuck Berry, George Thorogood never earned much respect from blues purists, but he became a popular favorite in the early '80s through repeated exposure on FM radio and the arena rock circuit. Thorogood's music was always loud, simple, and direct -- his riffs and licks were taken straight out of '50s Chicago blues and rock & roll -- but his formulaic approach helped him gain a rather large audience in the '80s, when his albums regularly went gold.

Nice compillation with accurate tags, printed in Japan.

MICHAEL BURKS

Guitarist, vocalist, songwriter Michael "Iron Man" Burks died in Atlanta on Sunday, May 6, 2012. He was 54 years old. He was returning from a tour of Europe and collapsed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. He was rushed to South Fulton Medical Center where he could not be revived. The preliminary diagnosis for cause of death was a heart attack. More information will follow as it becomes available. Michael "Iron Man" Burks earned his moniker by his hours-long, intensely physical performances, fearsome guitar attack, and tough, smoky vocals. He also earned it by the thousands of miles he personally logged behind the wheel of his touring van. Burks was a true modern blues hero whose music was driven by an intense, blue collar work ethic that had won him well-deserved national and international recognition. His instantly identifiable guitar sound and his live charisma earned him four Blues Music Award nominations. He won the 2004 Living Blues magazine Critics' Award for Best Guitarist. Burks received a nomination for the 2012 Blues Music Award for Best Guitarist.

Born in Milwaukee in 1957, Burks grew up immersed in the blues, and learned to play guitar at an early age. His family moved to Camden, Arkansas in the early 1970s. There, Burks and his siblings helped their father build the Bradley Ferry Country Club -- a 300-seat juke joint. By this time Michael was fronting his own band as well as backing several of the blues and R&B greats that passed through town. Burks left music to raise a family and returned to performing blues in the 1990s.

After self-releasing his first CD in 1997, Burks signed with Chicago's Alligator Records in 2001 and released three critically acclaimed albums. GuitarOne named his debut album, Make It Rain, one of the Top 200 greatest guitar recordings of all time. He has toured the world, headlining blues festivals, concert halls and clubs. His status as an Arkansas musical hero was confirmed by his receipt of the prestigious Sonny Payne Award for Blues Excellence in 2006, presented by the Delta Cultural Center, and by his multiple headlining appearances at The Arkansas Blues & Heritage Festival. Burks had just finished recording his fourth Alligator CD, which is due for release at the end of July 2012. - alligator.com

DIE TOTEN HOSEN - Ballast Der Republik + Die Geister, Die Wir Riefen (2012)

Die Toten Hosen is a German punk band from Düsseldorf. They have enjoyed decades-long mass appeal in Germany. The band's name literally means "The Dead Pants" (i.e. trousers) in English, although the phrase "tote Hose" is a German expression meaning "nothing going on" or "boring". Their name is figuratively best translated as "The Dead Beats". The members of Die Toten Hosen are Campino (Andreas Frege), Kuddel (Andreas von Holst), Vom (Stephen 'Vom' Ritchie), Andi (Andreas Meurer) and Breiti (Michael Breitkopf). Although most of the members are German, drummer Vom is actually from England and replaced Wölli as the drummer in 1999.

Although the band has its roots in punk rock, their style is far more than just punk rock. The band has visible influences from Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Hardcore Punk and also Alternative Rock. Die Toten Hosen constantly improved their skills through many years of stage experience, new contacts with other musicians and the experience they gained in foreign countries. Since the late 1980s the band had great commercial success which put them in good financial standing and in 1995 they even established their own record label JKP. All in all this enables them to put through their own ideas according to their own visions. In some of their songs Die Toten Hosen experiment with strings or wind instruments. A few songs have elements that are lifted from jazz (e.g. Warum werde ich nicht satt), reggae (Zehn kleine Jägermeister) or Yugoslavian gypsy music (Das Mädchen aus Rottweil).

For the most part The Toten Hosen have not departed substantially from their original style of music. Beaten quavers and power chords, easily understandable texts, simple melodies, anthem-like choruses and dropping of long solos belonging to that. - wikipedia

TAMMY WYNETTE - The Definitive Collection (1999)

Virginia Wynette Pugh, known professionally as Tammy Wynette was an American country music singer-songwriter and one of the genre's best-known artists and biggest-selling female vocalists. She was known as the First Lady of Country Music, and her best-known song, "Stand by Your Man", was one of the biggest selling hit singles by a woman in the history of the country music genre. Many of Tammy Wynette's hits dealt with classic themes of loneliness, divorce and the difficulties of male-female relationships. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, she dominated the country charts, scoring 17 number one hits. Along with Loretta Lynn, Lynn Anderson, and Dolly Parton, she defined the role of female country vocalists in the 1970s. Her 1969 marriage to country singer George Jones (which would end in divorce in 1975) created a country music "couple", following the prior success of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. Jones and Wynette recorded a series of duet albums and singles, which charted throughout the 1970s, concurrent to their respective solo hits. - wikipedia

WILLIE NELSON - Willie Nelson Sings Kristofferson (1979)

Long before alternative country, even before "outlaw country," Kris Kristofferson was defining the outer limits of country music with his frank, boozy, often risque songs and rough-hewn singing. In 1979, Nelson recorded a collection of Kristofferson's best compositions, appropriately titled WILLIE NELSON SINGS KRISTOFFERSON. The set kicks off with a funky take on "Me and Bobbie McGee," then slides effortlessly through eight more classics including "Help Me Make Me Through the Night," "Sunday Morning Comin' Down," "For the Good Times," and one of gospel's great songs of self-recrimination, "Why Me."

Recorded at the peak of Nelson's fame, this disc is vintage Willie and Family, loose but never sloppy. It almost sounds as if the band is playing the songs for the first time, but that they know each other so well and are such expert players that the whole thing falls together naturally and effortlessly. Nelson obviously loves this material, and it shows both in his singing and his guitar playing, which is particularly inspired here. In the 1980s Willie and Kristofferson formed a country supergroup with Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash, recording and touring as The Highwaymen. - cduniverse.com

JERRY GARCIA, DAVID GRISMAN, TONY RICE - The Pizza Tapes [Extra Large Edition] (2009)

Chances are, the most devoted fans of these three musicians have heard these tunes before, thanks to the crafty pizza-delivery boy who filched the tapes from Garcia's kitchen soon after they were recorded in 1993. That said, the warm, intimate performances here are very much worth an official CD release. The sessions came about when Tony Rice was in Northern California to record the delightful duet-collection Tone Poems with David Grisman. Garcia stopped by to hang out and jam with his old buddy Grisman and with Rice, one of his guitar idols. The disc retains all of the joy and spontaneity you'd expect from such an informal setting--Grisman even elected to leave in the between-song banter, which mostly consists of genuine overflowing mutual praise. The music itself, primarily traditional folk songs, is quite engaging thanks to Garcia's affecting, soulful, pained vocals and to the picking of all three. The contrast in flat-picking-guitar styles makes for an interesting combination: while Rice is technically superb, marvelously quick, and of remarkably clarion tone, Garcia is much more emotional and visceral, feeling his way along. There are a handful of exploratory, off-the-cuff jams that add to the impulsive nature of the whole project. Had the threesome actually intended this to be released, it probably wouldn't have the appeal it does, for this is the product of friends and music lovers, not recording artists.

Back in February 1993, David Grisman invited Jerry Garcia to join himself and Tony Rice in the studio. The trio performed together over two days on February 4 and February 5. As the story has it, Garcia’s recording were stolen soon afterwards by a pizza delivery boy and eventually leaked out to the public via a series of bootlegs. In 2000 Grisman released portions of the sessions as The Pizza Tapes. Now Grisman is offering an “Extra Large” 170 minute version of The Pizza Tapes through Acoustic Oasis, Grisman’s new download-based label. The Pizza Tapes – Extra Large Edition offers 16 previously unissued alternate takes along with the original master takes in their original sequence. - amazon.com

V.A - Vanthology: A Tribute To Van Morrison (2003)

Comprised of 15 tracks, Vanthology highlights the accomplishments of Van Morrison with a diverse collection of covers. Featuring soul/blues heavyweights from Little Milton to Son Seals, the album contrasts Morrison’s biggest hits, ("Tupelo Honey” and “Brown Eyed Girl") with lesser known favorites from the singer’s earlier days, ("My Lonely Sad Eyes"). Backed by a solid band including Jon and Sally Tiven, as well as former Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke, the guest artists give fine efforts from start to finish. "Vanthology" is a solid CD with an impressive list of featured performers. For aficionados of soul, blues and R&B the album will provide some fine moments of listening enjoyment. For fans of Van Morrison, the album may be a bit of a let down as the tracks lack the flair and familiarity of the original recordings. Fair comparison or not, paying tribute to someone like Morrison is not an easy task. Although imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, it is not always the most effective. Vanthology however, is certainly a worthy attempt.

TRACKS:
01. Tupelo Honey (Little Milton) 02. Jackie Wilson Said (Syl Johnson) 03. Have I Told You Lately (William Bell) 04. Brown Eyed Girl (Freddie Scott) 05. Into The Mystic (Frederick Knight) 06. My Lonely Sad Eyes (Bobby Patterson) 13. I Like It Like That (Henry Butler) 14. Bulbs (Ellis Hooks) 15. Moondance (Chuck Jackson)

ROYAL SOUTHERN BROTHERHOOD - Royal Southern Brotherhood (2012) thumbup

Royal Southern Brotherhood: CYRIL NEVILLE, DEVON ALLMAN AND MIKE ZITO join forces with CHARLIE WOOTON & YONRICO SCOTT to form a righteous regality of southern blues-rock.

Royal Southern Brotherhood unites two legendary roots-rock bloodlines along with a rising star guitarist and an in-the-pocket rhythm section for one of the most highly anticipated albums of the past decade. What started out as a rumor and a few informal local gigs at various New Orleans venues has developed into a full-fledged powerhouse of soulful sound that’s rockin,’ funky and all-together groove-a-licious. Incubated in the heat and humidity of a New Orleans summer in 2010, Cyril, Devon and Mike crossed paths and set in motion the beginnings of what would become Royal Southern Brotherhood, beginning with jams held at a secluded studio in the city’s Garden District. When the musical sparks began to fly and the personal chemistry coalesced, the trio began to explore the real idea of forming a band to bring this new music to life. Their debut show last September at the city’s Rock ‘n’ Bowl tore the roof off the place and launched a horde of YouTube videos that burned across the internet.

MUNGO JERRY - Cool Jesus (2011) thumbup

Ray Dorset's present backing band (of Martin, Luederwaldt, Troike) creates faithfully here the good time music & sounds that Mungo Jerry first came out with in the early 70s. The recordings were made under live studio conditions which produces a beautiful vibe. There were a couple of the pure skiffle type offerings that I was not so keen on, but otherwise there are many excellent pieces here. There's nothing particularly new about it, but there is enough variety from jug band to rock'n'roll to 50s doo-wop to pure pop to rock to folk protest to skiffle, plus with an overall excellent performance like this, manages to straddle all age groups & countries. Certainly you can imagine this sounding forth from a German beer festival along with the sounds of thumping beer glasses. Less blues orientated than Mungo's previous album from 2003, & though there is still that, here it is really back to pure Mungo (Dorset's guitar playing & vocals seem ageless) & whose more purist fans should surely love. - amazon.com

15 Ray Dorset songs and 3 standards that make up this set of songs that many people think have some of the strongest Mungo Jerry tracks ever released.

TRACKS:
01. Cool Jesus 02. John Henry 03. Far Away 04. Let's Rock 05. Give Us A Song 06. Hello Baby 07. Just Her Way 08. Going Up the River 09. You Can Get It If You Want It 10. I Lie Awake 11. DON McLEAN - The Best Of Don McLean (2001)

Famed for -- and ultimately defined by -- his perennial "American Pie," singer/songwriter Don McLean was born October 2, 1945, in New Rochelle, New York. After getting his start in the folk clubs of New York City during the mid-'60s, McLean strled for a number of years, building a small following through his work with Pete Seeger on the Clearwater, a sloop that sailed up and down the eastern seaboard to promote environmental causes. Still, McLean was primarily singing in elementary schools and the like when, in 1970, he wrote a musical tribute to painter Vincent Van Gogh; the project was roundly rejected by a number of labels, although MediaArts did offer him a contract to record a number of his other songs under the title Tapestry. The album fared poorly, but Perry Como earned a hit with a cover of the track "And I Love Her So," prompting United Artists to pick up McLean's contract. He returned in 1971 with American Pie; the title track, an elegiac eight-and-a-half-minute folk-pop epic inspired by the tragic death of Buddy Holly, became a number one hit, and the LP soon reached the top of the charts as well.

The follow-up, "Vincent," was also a smash, and McLean even became the subject of the Roberta Flack hit "Killing Me Softly with His Song"; however, to his credit -- and to his label's horror -- the singer refused to let the success of "American Pie" straitjacket his career. Subsequent records like 1972's self-titled effort and 1974's Playin' Favorites deliberately avoided any attempts to re-create the "American Pie" flavor; not surprisingly, his sales plummeted, and the latter release even failed to chart. After 1974's Homeless Brother and 1976's Solo, United Artists dropped McLean from his contract; he resurfaced on Arista the next year with Prime Time, but when it, too, fared poorly, he spent the next several years without a label. McLean enjoyed a renaissance of sorts with 1980's Chain Lightning; his first Top 30 LP in close to a decade, it spawned a Top Ten smash with its cover of Roy Orbison's classic "Crying," and his originals "Castles in the Air" and "Since I Don't Have You" both also reached the Top 40. However, 1981's Believers failed to sustain the comeback, and after 1983's Dominion, he was again left without benefit of label support. McLean spent the remainder of his career primarily on the road, grudgingly restoring "American Pie" to his set list and drawing inspiration from the country market; in addition to a number of live sets and re-recordings of old favorites, he also returned to the studio for projects like 1990's For the Memories (a collection of classic pop, country, and jazz covers) and 1995's River of Love (an LP of original material).

PETER KARP & SUE FOLEY - Beyond The Crossroads (2012)

There aren't many -- there may not be any -- contemporary male/female co-billed couples who both sing and contribute original songs, thus making the partnership an equal dynamic. Roots musicians Peter Karp and Sue Foley released their successful He Said, She Said song cycle in 2010, a challenging conceptual piece that examined, sometimes with excruciating intimacy, the beginnings of their professional and personal relationship in songs derived from written correspondence they sent each other over a several-years-long courtship. It was an audacious start to the duo's joint recorded career and one that set the bar pretty high. Two years and thousands of road miles later, it's encouraging to find that the couple has not only withstood the pressures of romantically linked touring musicians but has thrived creatively. Removed from the formulaic story constraint corner they painted themselves into with the previous disc, this one is both looser and more natural sounding. Karp and Foley play on the original tunes, and sing --sometimes trading verses -- on all but one instrumental. The opening upbeat shuffle "We're Gonna Make It" (not the Little Milton hit) adds a four-piece horn section and sounds as joyous as its somewhat clichéd title implies. But it sets the stage for the next 35 minutes of sharply written, energized, soul- and blues-influenced rock performed by two talents that truly complement each other. Karp's keyboards, slide guitar, and gruff yet friendly vocals power the gospel-styled title track but the twosome work best when they trade leads, singing on selections such as the swampy "Fine Love," the slow New Orleans march-inflected "At the Same Time," and the classic easy grooving R&B of "More Than I Bargained For," the latter a highlight of this terrific effort. Even the downbeat sentiments of "Blowin'" ("Lord I feel so weary/I'm ready to go down") seem downright uplifting when sung over a melody that captures a contagious, toe-tapping vibe. Karp displays his impressive boogie-woogie piano chops on the swinging, humorous, self-deprecating "You've Got a Problem" ("and it's me!" closes the chorus) and they take it down a notch on the acoustic folk-blues of "Chance of Rain." Foley's nasal yet emotive voice and Karp's raspier edge would seem to be unlikely companions but the contrasts work and even balance each other out. It helps makes this a logical, perhaps less ambitious but ultimately more organic follow-up to their revealing debut and indicates that for these two, in life and music, perhaps the best is yet to come. - allmusic.com

2005 - Man Alive!
Man Alive! is a Stephen Stills solo album released in 2005. It featured guest appearances by Herbie Hancock, Graham Nash, and Neil Young. While Man Alive! may not be the quintessential Stephen Stills album, the venerable singer-songwriter nevertheless enters his sixth decade with passion and fire. Stills has always done his best, most convincing work on the acoustic guitar, and the wood-and-steel material here proves no exception. On "Different Man" (with Neil Young) and "Piece of Me," he draws on his southern roots and demonstrates his uncanny knack for soulful blues. That soulfulness carries over to much of the electric material, whether the danceable, B-3-driven "Around Us," the achingly good "Ole Man Trouble," or the Zydeco-inflected "Acadienne," on which Stills sounds positively loose and unusually comfortable. Some material doesn't work as well––"Drivin' Thunder" (cowritten with Young) suffers from production that's more in tune with 1985 than 2005, and neither "Round the Bend" nor "I Don't Get It" shines with the full-blown brilliance that the artist clearly remains capable of. Still, this sometimes-flawed endeavor is a more-than-welcome return from one of rock's great, underrepresented treasures. - amazon.com

JANIS JOPLIN - The Pearl Sessions (2012)

Released in January 1971, three months after her October 1970 death, Pearl quickly became Janis Joplin’s definitive studio album, rising to #1 on the Billboard charts and staying there for nine weeks. Joplin ditched the horn section that somewhat muddied her Kozmic Blues project and, along with her new Full Tilt Boogie Band, cranked out a batch of bluesy rock nets that would ultimately define her distinctive vocal talents as more substantial and dynamic than just the caricature of a hard charging, heavy drinking, blues belting mama she had become. It has rightly assumed iconic status in her slim catalog of studio recordings.

“The definitive two-disc edition of Janis Joplin’s farewell album…” boasts this new reissue’s press release. Of course the same thing was claimed about 2005’s Legacy Edition, also a two disc set that bolstered the original 10 song program with live and bonus material. This one presents newly found studio footage of not only Janis communicating with her producer (and as the liner notes sest, budding love interest) and band members, but running through different takes, including demos, of half the songs before settling on the one we now consider classic.

BLINDSIDE BLUES BAND - Live At The Crossroads (2012)

Mike Onesko is a monster player. A veteran axe-meister from the old school of Blues-Rock, he tears into these 13 tracks like a man on a mission. Of course, guitar aficionados have come to expect this of him - his prior releases have all contributed to the genre in a big way, especially his recent Grooveyard CDs. (Check out his "Big Electric Cream Jam" if you want to know what I'm talking about.) But the current disc is our focus: Back with Scott Johnson, who complements his vicious guitar work with immense taste and style, both BBB axerippers tear up the stage with well-chosen covers and originals. If you like your Blues-Rock intense and hard-hitting, this one's for you. Excellent new disc by the Blindside Blues Band recorded Live without a net at the "Crossroads" (Rockpalast) in Germany capturing the bad-ass, killer BBB riffageon an awesome 2 disc (CD/DVD) package that defines serious hard rockin' blues power.

THE ZOZO SISTERS [Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy] - Adieu False Heart (2006)

This teaming of Linda Ronstadt and Cajun folk traditionalist Ann Savoy, billing themselves as the Zozo Sisters, shows how wide is the musical range of bittersweetness. The harmonies and shared lead vocals offer a complementary contrast between Ronstadt's purity of tone and Savoy's more piquant expressiveness. The arrangements turn folk songs into art songs, drawing as much upon chamber strings as Cajun fiddle and accordion. There's an exquisite beauty to the vocals, but the real surprise is how well the album holds together, given a range of material that extends from Cajun songs in French patois to stellar material from Julie Miller ("I Can't Get Over You," with husband Buddy Miller on guitar) and Richard Thompson ("King of Bohemia," "Burns' Supper") to a disarming revival of the Left Banke's 1960s hit "Walk Away Renee." Among other highlights, "Go Away from My Window" provides a showcase for the upper register of Ronstadt's soprano, and Savoy's lead vocals on Bill Monroe's "The One I Love Is Gone" bring out the blues in bluegrass. - amazon.com

IRIS DeMENT - Discography (Solo Albums)

One of the most celebrated country-folk performers of her day, singer/songwriter Iris Dement was born on January 5, 1961, in rural Paragould, AR, the youngest of 14 children. At the age of three, her devoutly religious family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music; during her teenaged years, however, she was first exposed to country, folk, and R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell. Upon graduating high school, she relocated to Kansas City to attend college.

After a series of jobs waitressing and typing, Dement first began composing songs at the age of 25. Honing her skills at open-mic nights, in 1988 she moved to Nashville, where she contacted producer Jim Rooney, who helped her land a record contract. Dement did not make her recording debut until 1992, when her independent label offering, Infamous Angel, won almost universal acclaim thanks to her pure, evocative vocal style and spare, heartfelt songcraft. Despite a complete lack of support from country radio, the record's word-of-mouth praise earned her a deal with Warner Bros., which reissued Infamous Angel in 1993 as well as its follow-up, 1994's stunning My Life. Her third LP, 1996's eclectic The Way I Should, marked a dramatic change not only in its more rock-influenced sound but also in its subject matter; where Dement's prior work was introspective and deeply personal, The Way I Should was fiercely political, tackling topics like sexual abuse, religion, government policy, and Vietnam. In 1999, she collaborated with country man John Prine on his album, In Spite of Ourselves. Dement recorded four duets with Prine that earned her a Grammy nod the following year. Her own recording career was on hiatus for the late '90s and early 2000s, but she returned in 2005 with Lifeline. - allmusic.com

BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS - Marley: The Original Soundtrack (2012)

BOB MARLEY was born February 6, 1945, in rural St. Ann's Parish, Jamaica, leaving home at 14 to pursue a music career in Kingston. A naturally gifted musician and singer, he recorded his first track in 1962. In '72 finding himself stranded in London with his band the Wailers, he signed to Chris Blackwell's Island Records and went on to enjoy global success and put reggae on the music map. Many of his songs - which highlighted both Jamaica's poverty and the spirituality of its people - have since become universal anthems. Marley died of cancer on May 11, 1981, aged 36.

The CDs contains 24 tracks, hand-picked by the Marley family and Chris Blackwell, gathering together some of the most significant musical moments of one of the most beloved and cherished artists of all-time. Featured are classic studio recordings, a special Kindred Spirit dub mix of "Exodus" and tracks from various live performances including, for the first time on record, the 1978 One Love Peace Concert performance of "Jammin'" during which Marley joined the hands of bitter political rivals Michael Manley and Edward Seaga, a gesture which went some way towards restoring peace to a strife-torn Jamaica. - amazon.com
