NORAH JONES - Little Broken Hearts (2012)

Norah Jones has set a May 1 release date for Little Broken Hearts (Blue Note/EMI), her stunning new album produced by Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton). Jones has also revealed the album cover and track listing of the 12-song set, which features original songs co-written by Jones and Burton. Jones drew the inspiration for the album cover from the vintage movie posters that adorn Burton's Los Angeles studio. "Brian has this great collection of Russ Meyer posters in his studio," explains Jones, "and this particular one, called Mudhoney, was right over the couch where I sat every day. I always was looking at it and thinking `that's so cool I want to look like her!' I remember staring at the poster the whole time we made the record. It's a great visual." Little Broken Hearts is the fascinating next step in the artistic evolution of one of the music world's most consistently intriguing singer-songwriters. Jones first emerged on the world stage 10 years ago this month with the February 2002 release of Come Away With Me, her self-described "moody little record" that introduced a singular new voice and grew into a global phenomenon, sweeping the 2003 Grammy Awards and signaling a paradigm shift away from the prevailing synthetic pop music of the time. Come Away With Me has just become the #10 best-selling album of the Soundscan era. The album has sold 25 million copies worldwide. Since then, Jones has released three more critically acclaimed and commercially successful solo albums--Feels Like Home (2004), Not Too Late (2007), and The Fall (2009)--as well as two albums with her country collective The Little Willies. The 2010 compilation ...Featuring Norah Jones showed her to possess an incredibly versatile voice by collecting her collaborations with artists as diverse as Willie Nelson, Outkast, Herbie Hancock, and Foo Fighters. Jones previously collaborated with Danger Mouse on his acclaimed 2011 album ROME, a valentine to classic Italian film score music that also featured Jack White. - amazon.com

HUMBLE PIE - Natural Born Bugie: The Immediate Anthology (2000)

A showcase for former Small Faces' frontman Steve Marriott and one-time Herd guitar virtuoso Peter Frampton, the hard rock outfit Humble Pie formed in Essex, England in 1969. Also featuring ex-Spooky Tooth bassist Greg Ridley along with drummer Jerry Shirley, the fledgling group spent the first several months of its existence locked away in Marriott's Essex cottage, maintaining a relentless practice schedule. Signed to the Immediate label, Humble Pie soon issued their debut single "Natural Born Boogie," which hit the British Top Ten and paved the way for the group's premiere LP, As Safe as Yesterday Is. After touring the U.S. in support of 1969's Town and Country, Humble Pie returned home only to discover that Immediate had declared bankruptcy. The band recruited a new manager, Dee Anthony, who helped land them a new deal with A&M; behind closed doors, Anthony encouraged Marriott to direct the group towards a harder-edged, grittier sound far removed from the acoustic melodies favored by Frampton. As Marriott's raw blues shouting began to dominate subsequent LPs like 1970's eponymous effort and 1971's Rock On, Frampton's role in the band he co-founded gradually diminished; finally, after a highly charged U.S. tour which yielded 1971's commercial breakthrough Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore, Frampton exited Humble Pie to embark on a solo career. Natural Born Bugie: The Immediate Anthology features 34 tracks by hard rock outfit Humble Pie, originally recorded for the Immediate label in 1969. - allmusic.com

KINGDOM COME - Live & Unplug ged (1996)

During the late '80s, few metal bands were as controversial as Kingdom Come. With a Led Zeppelin resurgence in full bloom around this time but Page-Plant-Jones refusing to reunite for a tour, a void was created, and groups like Kingdom Come were more than happy to fill it. With a sound that was a carbon copy of the mighty Zep, Kingdom Come scored a hit with their 1988 self-titled debut, before sinking into obscurity shortly thereafter. But throughout the '90s and early 21st century, singer Lenny Wolf kept the group afloat -- touring and issuing all-new studio albums (with a rotating cast of supporting players). And to show how extensive the "unpled craze" of the '90s was, Kingdom Come even got in the act, issuing Live & Unpled in 1996. All these years later, Wolf's Robert Plant-esque vocals are as strong as ever, as heard on the electrified versions of "What Love Can Be" ("Since I've Been Loving You," anyone?) and "Do You Like It," while their biggest hit, "Get It On," is mysteriously absent. But it's the second disc that longtime fans will probably be buying the set for, as Wolf croons his way through a surprise cover of the Beatles' "And I Love Her" and such originals as "You're Not the Only." But one complaint -- it just doesn't make sense why this set couldn't have been issued as a single-disc set, as it is comprised of only 15 tracks (with "You're Not the Only" repeated twice). And since it's a German import, Live & Unpled isn't exactly cheap, either.

TRACKS:

STEVE HOWE - Not Necessarily Acoustic (1994)

Recorded in intimate club performances in late 1993, this live and nearly unpled collection ably spans three decades of Howe's releases. Lead vocals are always a weak spot for him, and so he wisely constrains most of this album to solo instrumentals. The result is a headphone treat, as if you're sitting right in front of his amp and his famed collection of guitars. Of special interest is his one vocal and guitar piece, a seamless medley of each movement from Tales from Topographic Oceans; it's as close to a Tales demo session as fans will ever get. Because Howe's albums are a pastiche of already ripened styles -- a "Meadow Rag" here, a steel guitar twang in "Cactus Boogie" there, and a flamenco-tinged "Mood for a Day" to top it off -- the material on Not Necessarily Acoustic has hardly dated, and it sounds less like a retrospective than a unified new album. The one unfortunate omission is that while the concerts had a nod to his psychedelic days with Tomorrow's "My White Bicycle," there's nothing from that era on this disc. - allmusic.com

ERIC JOHNSON - Alien Love Child: Live And Beyond (2000)

Eric Johnson is an American musician, songwriter, and vocalist from Austin, Texas. Best known for his electric guitar skills, Johnson is also a highly proficient acoustic, lap steel, resonator, and bass guitarist as well as an accomplished pianist and vocalist. Eric Johnson’s stature as one of the premier guitar players in contemporary music is his artistic trump card, backed by a Grammy Award and five nominations, platinum album, Top 10 hits like “Cliffs Of Dover,” praise from critics and the esteem of his peers. But the full hand of his talents marks him as well as a gifted songwriter, dynamic live performer, singer, pianist, song interpreter, and creator of a rich and diverse musical legacy.

Live and Beyond, captured at Austin's famed Antone's blues club, finds quietly persuasive guitar hero Eric Johnson and his two-man band, Alien Love Child, at the peak of their powers. While the blues-based, primarily instrumental material will find favor mainly with guitar worshippers, several cuts are more than mere showcases for Johnson's groove-laden, flavorful yet delicate playing, and the band's tight, fluid jams. "Once a Part of Me," with Malford Milligan of Storyville joining in on vocals, is slow, sensual, and Clapton-esque, while the standout "Boogie King," a tribute to John Lee Hooker, is aggressively progressive. Johnson's strengths do not lie in his vocals and lyrics; ultimately, it's songs like the effortless, Hendrix-like "Elevator Sky Movie," where Johnson reaches his impressive apogee. - amazon.com

ANGELICA - Angelica (1997)

Angelica is an intriguing blend of opera and rock spearheaded by songwriter/composer Clif Magness and lyricist Carole Bayer Sager. The project features four sopranos -- Julia Bonilla, Anita DeSimone, Sewell Griffith and Rebecca Semrau - who are supported by a wide array of professional studio musicians, including bassist Nathan East, pianist David Foster, the Boys Choir of Harlem and guitarists Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and Dweezil Zappa. Essentially, the album is opera songs performed with rock spirit - big beats, big chords, big dynamics and pure intensity. Magness has rearranged selections from Verdi's Carmen, Mozart's The Magic Flute, Puccini's Madame Butterfly and Gianni Chicchi, and Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, as well as several selections from Schubert, Gounod and Franck, for a rock band, keeping the actual arrangements and feeling of the original composition. Occasionally it works, occasionally it doesn't, but Angelica is never less than intriguing, and adventurous listeners - particularly fans of prog-rock - might want to give it a try.

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM & STEVIE NICKS - Buckingham Nicks (1973)

While it will be hard to find, this lone album cut by a young and ambitious (and still romantically attached) Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham a short two years before joining Fleetwood Mac is well worth digging out for your turntable. There are a few CD versions floating around, but they were no doubt burned from vinyl copies anyway, so don't be fooled. With the Mac's highly lucrative 1997 reunion there was serious talk of a re-release, but apparently it was just talk. Considering what the duo was to later accomplish, Buckingham Nicks is an engaging listen and served as a proving ground of sorts for both artists' songwriting chops and for Buckingham's skills as an emerging studio craftsman. It was a good enough resumé for Fleetwood Mac, who re-recorded the beautifully cerebral "Crystal" when the duo joined them for 1975's self-titled comeback album. The high-octane rockabilly of "Don't Let Me Down Again" became a staple of the band's concert sets well into the 1980s. Crisp, ringing acoustic guitars and a bottom-heavy rhythm section (using the talents of Waddy Wachtel, Jim Keltner, and Jerry Scheff) framed the pair's songs in a sound something akin to FM-ready folk-rock. Lesser known tracks like the glistening opener, "Crying in the Night," from Nicks and Buckingham's lonely-guy lament, "Without a Leg to Stand On," are on a par with their later mega hits. At the same time, the misogyny of Buckingham's "Lola, My Love" is a real eye-roller and the orchestral overtones of "Frozen Love" show that the two were over-reaching themselves just a bit. Buckingham-Nicks was a stiff however and the couple had lost their deal with Polydor. But 1975, of course, proved to be one of their better years. - allmusic.com

STREETWALKERS - Live (1977) thumbup

Streetwalkers were an English rock band formed in late 1973 by two former members of Family, vocalist Roger Chapman and guitarist John "Charlie" Whitney. They were a five piece band which evolved from Chapman and Whitney's previous touring band Chapman Whitney Streetwalkers. The band was managed by Michael Alphandary and Harvey Goldsmith and were best known for their live performances and their album Red Card (1976). By 1977 their potential to become more important in UK rock history was diminished by changing musical taste, due to the growing influence of Punk rock and New Wave music on European culture. The band had success in USA and Europe, particularly Germany.

After Vicious But Fair did nothing in the U.S., Mercury passed on this live double set, which British Phonogram made available to the half-dozen or so Streetwalkers fans in America. There's not much to recommend here, the sound quality is awful, and the vinyl pressing frequently fuzzes into a ball of distortion when the band plays in unison. Chapman tears off a few soulful moments, and when the band doesn't sound like a bunch of prog-rock hacks, it can rock. This is only for the truly fanatical. - cduniverse.com

HUMBLE PIE - Performance: Rockin' The Fillmore (1971) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Recorded while Peter Frampton was still in the band, Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore captures an early performance by Humble Pie where Steve Marriot's lyricism and ideas where balanced by Frampton's searing lead guitar. This is hardly as engaging as As Safe Yesterday Is, which had studiocraft along with songcraft, but as a document of a band at a pivotal point in their existence, this is valuable and at times insightful.

There is a story that, during the mixing of the album, the band presented what they thought to be the finished product to their manager, Dee Anthony. Upon listening to it, he made one comment: "Great, but where's the audience?" It turned out that Marriott and drummer Jerry Shirley were stoned and had forgotten to include the sound of the audience in the mix - so it was back to the mixing desk. Shortly before the album's release, guitarist Peter Frampton left due to growing friction between Marriott and him. His departure hurt Marriott greatly, though he would never admit it to the other band members. The album's steady sales helped Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore to become the band's first RIAA gold record, and its popularity helped the band's previous album, Rock On, to reach gold album status as well.

JACK WHITE - Blunderbuss (2012) thumbup

Jack White, often credited as Jack White III, is an American musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, multi-instrumentalist and occasional actor. He was best known as the guitarist, pianist and lead vocalist of The White Stripes until they split in February 2011, as well as a member of The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. Blunderbuss is the debut solo album by Jack White, released on April 24, 2012 through White's own label Third Man Records in association with XL Recordings and Columbia Records. The album was written, recorded and produced entirely by White in 2011. The first single from the album, "Love Interruption" was released on January 30 through White's website and Third Man Records website.

Produced by Jack White and recorded at his own Third Man Studio in Nashville, Blunderbuss has been described by White as "an album I couldn't have released until now. I've put off making records under my own name for a long time but these songs feel like they could only be presented under my name. These songs were written from scratch, had nothing to do with anyone or anything else but my own expression, my own colors on my own canvas."

VICTORIA WILLIAMS - Loose (1994) thumbup

Victoria Williams's endearingly sweet folk narratives gained a national audience when Pearl Jam had a hit with her "Crazy Mary." The childhood remembrance was the featured track on SWEET RELIEF, an all-star collection compiled to aid Williams when medical bills stemming from her strle against muscular dystrophy stacked up. From 1994's LOOSE, her first album released post-benefit, it's not hard to tell why even jaded rockers might line up to her rescue. Williams radiates an aura of unconditional love and innocent wonder on a touchingly earnest set of songs about her country neighbors and faithful pups. In her fluttering childlike voice, even a song titled "U R Loved" is cynic-proof. The highlight of the album is clearly Williams's soaring orchestral recording of "Crazy Mary," both simple and thunderous, uplifting and melancholy--a perfect sample of the rich tapestry that is Victoria Williams. - cduniverse.com

RYKARDA PARASOL - Our Hearts First Meet (2006) & For Blood and Wine (2009)

Often compared to Nick Cave, Nico and the Velvet Underground, and Johnny Cash, Parasol weaves intricate tales infused with raw, visceral lyrics, dark meaning and simmering atmosphere. The end result is a highly stylized aesthetic of both sound and imagery. Rykarda Parasol describes her dark sound as "Rock Noir". A unique deep gender-bending voice, Parasol's stories are narratives derived from her personal life. Often compared to literary notables as well as musical ones, Parasol's education is in literature and fine art. Her words and imagery are as much related to art, literature, and theatre as they are to music. Musically, she draws on American rock, soul and southern influences as well as Northern European styles both modern and ancient. A San Francisco native, Parasol and has also lived in Texas, Los Angeles, and presently splitting her time in Paris, France and San Francisco. She is the product of Swedish mum and Israeli father, a Holocaust survivor. She has written and self-produced / self-released two highly acclaimed albums.

SANDY DENNY - A Boxful Of Treasures (2004)

Sandy Denny (1947 – 1978), born Alexandra Elene Maclean Denny, was an English singer and songwriter, perhaps best known as the lead singer for the folk rock band Fairport Convention. She has been described by Allmusic's Richie Unterberger as "the pre-eminent British folk rock singer". After briefly working with British folk band the Strawbs, Denny joined Fairport Convention in 1968, remaining with that band until the end of 1969. She formed the short-lived band Fotheringay in 1970, releasing one album with them (another unreleased album would surface some three decades later), before focusing on a solo career. Between 1971 and 1977, Denny released four solo albums: The North Star Grassman and the Ravens, Sandy, Like an Old Fashioned Waltz, and Rendezvous. She is also noted as the only guest vocalist on a Led Zeppelin studio album, when she shared a duet with Robert Plant for "The Battle of Evermore" on Led Zeppelin IV (1971). Music publications Sunday Express, Uncut and Mojo have each called Denny Britain's finest female singer-songwriter. Her composition "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" has been recorded by many artists as diverse as Judy Collins, Nina Simone and Cat Power.

The most comprehensive portrait of one of England's finest singer/songwriters. A deluxe five CD long format box-set. Includes such previously unreleased gems as 'Silver Threads & Golden Needles' (outtake from 'Fotheringay'), 'Losing Game' ((Duet with Jess Roden), 'She Moves Through The Fair' (live duet with Dave Swarbick), plus many alternate takes & demo versions, with & without Fotheringay, Fairport Convention, & more. 56-color booklet with a forward by Richard Thompson plus pieces & remembrances from Jim Irvin (MOJO), Joe Boyd, John Renbourn, Linda Thompson, Pete Townshend, & more. FLYING COLORS - Flying Colors (2012)

When your band Dream Theatre or Deep Purple takes a rest, what is a man to do? Stroke your blond hair and cradle your guitar? Trim your beard and twiddle your drum sticks? Well, no. Late in the year 2010, guitarist Steve Morse and drummer Mike Portnoy decided to start a new band. For facts’ sake, it was around this time that Portnoy and DT parted ways. But the prog-metal powerhouse and the hard rock fret flyer made for an impressive, if slightly unusual, pairing. The Flying Colors band started to stretch its wings with the addition of Neal Morse, the keyboard player from the spectactularly nerdy-named Spock’s Beard; bass player Dave LaRue; and lead vocalist Casey McPherson. In nine intensive days at the beginning of last year the album Flying Colors was finally recorded. With touches of Yes and early Genesis but with a hard rock edge, there are some superb examples of super-talented musicians and songwriters getting everything right. But this comes with a caution: Flying Colors swings violently from skilled nerdgasm-inducing prog-rock to top 40 bothering derivative euphoria, and usually back again. - geeksofdoom.com

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT - Out Of The Game (2012)

After delivering the powerful, yet stripped down and subdued All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu in 2010, Wainwright returned to the studio with the intention of returning to the ornate pop of his early days. The resulting Out of the Game, which was produced by Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Duran Duran), and feature 12 new songs that the artist describes as the most "danceable" material in his repertoire to date.

Rufus says it's "the most pop album I've ever made" while Mark Ronson believes "it's the best work of my career." Influences, as ever, were all encompassing. Mark says `Out of the Game' "has a real 70's, Laurel Canyon spirit" while Rufus cites "all the greats- Elton, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, basically the brash and beautiful. It's also very Rufus." - amazon.com

LEVON HELM & THE RCO ALL STARS - Live At The Palladium NYC - New Year's Eve 1977 (2006)

In November 1976, the Band called it quits with a well-publicized Thanksgiving Day farewell concert, but Levon Helm made it clear to anyone who cared to listen he thought the group was foolish to throw in the towel, and within a year Helm was on the road with a band designed to show fans how much he had to offer. The RCO All Stars certainly lived up to their name, featuring Helm on drums and vocals, Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John) on piano, Paul Butterfield on harmonica, Steve Cropper and Fred Carter, Jr. on guitars, Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass, and a horn section featuring Howard Johnson, Tom "Bones" Malone, Lou Marini, and Alan Rubin. While the group's sole studio album showed the supergroup's songwriting chops were not all one might hope for, they certainly had chops and swing to spare, and this live recording of the All Stars on-stage as 1977 was about to fade into 1978 in New York City testifies to their power as a live act. While Helm takes the lion's share of the vocals, he has the good sense not to hog the spotlight, with Rebennack and Butterfield singing some leads, and the musicians are in fine fettle throughout as the horn section blows up a storm, Helm's drums strut like a bantam, Rebennack's keys add rollicking color, and Cropper throws some razor-sharp solos into the mix. And while the song selection here, like on the studio album, is good but not great (the best numbers are the most recognizable covers, in particular "Good Night Irene," "Milk Cow Boogie," and the Band's "Ophelia"), playing before an enthusiastic audience the All Stars give these numbers just enough juice to make the difference. Helm obviously meant the RCO All Stars to be a band that would rock the party, and on this disc you can hear them do just that; fans of any of the acts on board will have a great time with this album. - allmusic.com

WALTER TROUT - Blues For The Modern Daze (2012)

Walter Trout is the rockin’ blues guitar master who’s been plying his craft to adoring audiences for years. Some might call him rock, and they wouldn’t be wrong, but Trout’s blues roots run deep and wide, and the electric virtuoso never misses an opportunity to show them. Blues for the Modern Daze is everything fans of Trout have come to expect — and nothing less. Trout touts his celebrated archetypal blues-rock guitar: burning, overdriven licks that run wild across fields of modern blues tracks. “In terns of subject matter,” says Trout, “the state of the world is perfect for writing blues songs.” The album reflects this sentiment, with a sort of melancholy underpinning throughout. “Lonely” is a commentary on our obsession with electronic relationships, while ignoring personal connections. “Sky is Fallin’ Down” is a duck-and-cover blues number on the end of the world. ”Blues for my Baby” is a nice, slow number with Walter’s endlessly precise blues licks as he channels the great B.B. King. The title track is particularly poignant, beginning in a country blues style open tuning, building tension and ultimately tearing into wailing vocals and stinging overdriven electric riffs. Much of the album dutifully reflects the “Modern Daze” title, both in the spirit of the blues’ progress up until now, and as the subjects of many tracks reflect the problems many of us are facing. Trout conjures up a great deal of the past, with selectively placed acoustic and Mississippi country blues stylings, while keeping the topics firmly contemporary. With most of the 15 tracks averaging 6 minutes, and the album clocking in around an hour & twelve minutes, there’s plenty of Trout to go around. - americanbluesscene.com

LEVON HELM - Levon Helm & The RCO All-Stars (1977) & American Son (1980) [2008]

Released shortly after the unexpected comeback success of 2007's Dirt Farmer, Levon Helm And The RCO All-Stars / American Son is a two-albums-on-one-CD set that reissues Levon Helm's first two solo records. Released in 1977, Levon Helm And The RCO All-Stars maintains the loose, rangy feel of the Band's The Last Waltz sets, featuring a number of vintage old R&B and early rock-and-roll songs. American Son (1980), Helm's best known solo record, is a country-tinged collection of soulful rockers recorded in Nashville as the drummer and actor was filming a major part in the film Coal Miner's Daughter. The All-Stars were a dream aggregation of of Levon Helm's favourite musicians, including names like Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John), Paul Butterfield, Booker T. Jones, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Steve Cropper, Tom Malone, Alan Rubin and the two old-timers Henry Glover and Fred Carter from the Hawks-period. Only one track, "Blues So Bad", was written by Levon himself. The songs, recorded partly at Shangri-La and partly at Levon's own RCO studio in Woodstock, were mostly good-time, bar-band rhythm and blues, disappointing Band fans that still were hoping for material more like the early Band albums. Levon Helm and the RCO All Stars stopped at #142 on the album chart, despite several innovative attempts to promote the album, including a mega release party and some very memorable live dates with the All-Stars.

ERIC CLAPTON - Complete Clapton (2007)

Disregard the title of this 2007 compilation: there is no way that any double-disc, 36-track set could be called The Complete Clapton, not when Eric Clapton has had a career that's spanned over four decades. This doesn't even attempt to cover as much ground as his landmark four-disc 1988 box set Crossroads, which began with his first band the Yardbirds and then followed his winding journeys through John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney & Bonnie, and Derek & the Dominos before settling into his solo records. Of course, The Complete Clapton covers the nearly 20 years that have elapsed since the release of Crossroads, a time frame which includes the blockbuster success of his 1992 Unpled, its all-blues 1994 follow-up From the Cradle, and many soft adult contemporary hits from the late '90s. All these phases are touched upon on The Complete Clapton, but the set lops off all of Clapton's earliest recordings, beginning with five Cream staples ("I Feel Free," "Sunshine of Your Love," "White Room," "Crossroads," "Badge") and Blind Faith's "Presence of the Lord" before delving into his solo career. This turns The Complete Clapton into a portrait of Clapton the classic rocker, as it focuses almost entirely on radio staples -- including tracks like "I've Got a Rock & Roll Heart," "Forever Man," and "It's in the Way That You Use It" that didn't make the cut on Crossroads -- that still are played frequently years after their original release. As such, this set doesn't pack many surprises, but it does hit the obvious highlights well and serves as a good hits package for the casual and curious fan, and in that sense, it works as a good companion piece to Clapton's autobiography, which was published the same week this was released in October 2007. - allmusic.com

TONY JOE WHITE - Collected (2012)

Tony Joe White is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known for his 1969 hit "Polk Salad Annie"; "Rainy Night in Georgia", which he wrote but was first made popular by Brook Benton in 1970; and "Steamy Windows", a hit for Tina Turner in 1989. "Polk Salad Annie" was also recorded by Elvis Presley and Tom Jones.

Tony Joe White has accomplished much in the years since he emerged from his home in Louisiana’s swamp country and the hardscrabble circuit of Texas honky-tonks. His music is part of America’s soundtrack – sparse and elegant, filled with shadows, sadness and beauty. Nobody else writes songs like these – songs that evoke both the mysteries of the place were he was raised and the spirits that haunt us all in our most private, lonely moments. Nobody sings them like White either. That dark baritone, scarred and sweet, brings these songs to life like none other. Even so, others have memorably interpreted his songs, from Brook Benton’s unforgettable take on “Rainy Night in Georgia” in 1970 to Tina Turner’s intensely soulful rendition of “Steamy Windows.” Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, Dusty Springfield, Etta James – iconic artists in their own right have honored “the Swamp Fox” by cutting his tunes. Others have joined White, with Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Michael McDonald, Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams and Shelby Lynne among those who have paid tribute as guests on recent, theme-oriented projects such as The Heroines and Uncovered.

GOOD, PINSENT & KEELOR - Down And Out In Upalong (2012)

It doesn't get any more Canadian than this, an unlikely collaboration among one of the country's most beloved actors, Gordon Pinsent, and two of its most beloved musicians, Blue Rodeo's Greg Keelor and the Sadies' Travis Good. It began with Pinsent reciting his poetry for a documentary film on his life, and the idea sprouted to set some of that work to music. With Keelor and Good adapting it to the kind of hazy acoustic sounds fans of Keelor's solo albums will recognize, Down & Out in UpAlong plays like a visit to those grizzled uncles your parents preferred you stayed away from. Pinsent's words vividly evoke memories of his Newfoundland youth, especially "Shadows in the Sun" and "Peter Easton," but there's also room made for Good to inject some downhome picking, as on rollicking instrumental "Super Chicken." As a raconteur, Pinsent has few peers in Canada, and Down & Out in Upalong proves that he can hold his own in the music world as well.

JOHN GRANT - Queen Of Denmark (2010)

John Grant used to front the Czars, whose failure to translate acclaim into sales no doubt further fuelled his supersized self-loathing. However, after descending into a personal hell of booze, drugs and giving up music for waiting tables, the Coloradan has emerged with a colossus. Backed by superfans Midlake, these are songs of impossible love, near-suicide and redemption, with an air of vastness and contemplation recalling Dennis Wilson's masterpiece, Pacific Ocean Blue. With pianos and flutes, songs such as I Wanna Go to Marz and Where Dreams Go to Die combine a surreal, David Lynch, sideways look at capitalist America with choruses most artists could only dream about. The jauntier Silver Platter Club and JC Hates Faggots brutally poke fun at rich jocks and Grant's time as a gay child in a religious household respectively. But the emotionally wringing ballads – the witheringly honest Queen of Denmark and Jeff Buckleyesque Caramel – most sest a man whose time has come.

JOHN McVIE'S ''GOTTA BAND'' WITH LOLA THOMAS - S/T (1992)

This is the first and only solo album of McVie's. McVie is of course the bassist and fouding member of Fleetwood Mac. He's very underrated because of his humble personality, however he's obviously one of the best bassists this world has seen. He has been called "the best blues bassist in all of music." He has an amazing tone, and he purposely stays in the background supporting the vocalist(s). This album also marks the first time we hear McVie sing, however it is only backing vocals. Singing and playing bass at the same time is no easy task. McVie sang once with Fleetwood Mac, which was background on "Say You Love Me" on The Dance album. Though Lola Thomas is clearly unknown, she is a fine vocalist. If you're a bassist, or simply a fan of Fleetwood Mac, this album is certainly a good buy. It hasn't been reissued, and I doubt it will be. This album is extremely rare. - amazon.com

John McVie's "Gotta Band" with Lola Thomas is the only solo album to date by the British Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie, released in 1992. American singer Lola Thomas provided vocals throughout, backed by McVie and a crew of session musicians including Fleetwood Mac guitarist Billy Burnette and former Rolling Stone Mick Taylor.

ELECTRIC DIRT finds the Arkansas legend building on its critically acclaimed predecessor, DIRT FARMER, and bringing the democratic ebullience of his weekly Midnight Ramble live sessions (held in his barn) to record. Ramble stalwarts Larry Campbell and Amy Helm (Levon's daughter) appear all over the album (Campbell as producer and multi-instrumentalist; Amy Helm providing genetically in tune harmonies), while a loose, New Orleans vibe pervades courtesy of Allen Toussaint's horn arrangements (covers of the Grateful Dead's "Tennessee Jed", Randy Newman's "Kingfish" and other album standouts). The album, naturally, belongs to Helm, who is in stunningly assured vocal form (remarkable for a throat cancer survivor) and whose slack rustic groove remains irresistible (who else can make a mandolin sound like funk instrument). Helm--never considered one of the Band's chief songwriters--reveals his songcraft chops with ELECTRIC DIRT'S emotional centerpiece, "Growing Trade," an instant classic co-written with Campbell that rates with the Band's best. - cduniverse.com

LEVON HELM - The Midnight Ramble Sessions, Vol. 1 & 2 (2005)

Mark Lavon "Levon" Helm, is an American rock multi-instrumentalist and actor who achieved fame as the drummer and frequent lead and backing vocalist for The Band. Helm is known for his deeply soulful, country-accented voice, and creative drumming style highlighted on many of The Band's recordings, such as "The Weight", "Up on Cripple Creek", "Ophelia" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". His 2007 comeback album Dirt Farmer earned the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album in February 2008, and in November of that year, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him #91 in the list of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2010, Electric Dirt, his 2009 follow-up to Dirt Farmer, won the first ever Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, an inaugural category in 2010. In 2011, his live album Ramble at the Ryman was nominated for the Grammy in the same category and won.

Levon Helm passed peacefully this afternoon. He was surrounded by family, friends and band mates and will be remembered by all he touched as a brilliant musician and a beautiful soul.

Heroic blues and R&B jams direct from Band drummer Levon Helm’s Woodstock digs. Heroic, because the iconic, gravely voiced Helm was fighting his way back from throat cancer and these sessions chronicle his strles and successes. Guest vocalists add stylistic variety, and Dr. John’s appearance on “Borrowed Time” is a knockout. You could do a lot worse that sitting around this barn, having a few drinks and reveling in the vibes that helped to shape American music from the 60s on. Store bought copies have DVDs. Of course, after the Ramble Sessions, Helm went on to record his first solo album in 25 years, the acclaimed Dirt Farmer (followed by Electric Dirt). Much of this is blues, but you’ll hear Dylan’s Basement Tapes favorite, “Don’t Ya Tell Henry,” below.

TED HAWKINS - The Final Tour (1998)

Ted Hawkins' story is one of the most interesting -- and tragic -- in the history of R&B. Who'd have thought that a fifty-something street singer who performed 1960s-type soul in Venice Beach, CA, would have signed with Geffen's DGC label after decades of obscurity? That's exactly what happened, but tragically, a 58-year-old Hawkins died from a diabetes-related stroke just when things were really looking up for him. Recorded live at three 1994 concerts and released in 1998, The Final Tour shows how great Hawkins was sounding during the last months of his life. Nothing slick or elaborate happens on this album -- it's just the charismatic Hawkins and his acoustic guitar, drawing on Sam Cooke's influence but always sounding like his own man. Those familiar with Hawkins' Rounder output will be familiar with heartfelt originals like "Bad Dog," "Bring It on Home Daddy," and "Revenge of Scorpio," all of which demonstrate that he was as superb a composer as he was a singer. Hawkins is equally captivating on interpretations of Brook Benton's "I Got What I Wanted" and "All I Have to Offer You Is Me," a hit for country great Charley Pride that easily lends itself to Hawkins' brand of acoustic R&B. Soul lovers who haven't experienced the joys of Hawkins' music should make a point of obtaining this magnificent album. - allmusic.com

GRAVELROAD - Psychedelta (2012)

GravelRoad are the no bullshit saviors of Mississippi Delta Blues. Want Proof? When blues great T-Model Ford was looking for a band, GravelRoad fit that bill. They play with guts, smiles, and slides and that beautiful dragging left foot on the kick pumping the pulse of too many Delta legends to mention. While their roots are deeply steeped in Delta mud, they also fearlessly explore new territory on their own. They call it Psychedelta, some call it acid blues, a heavier more evocative exploration than classic blues; it’s blues gone Donnie Darko; blues that tips it’s hat to the Flaming Lips, blues for the 21st century. - knickknackrecords.com

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT - All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu (2010)

Affectionately referred to by Elton John as "the greatest songwriter on the planet" and praised by The New York Times for his "genuine originality," Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. He has just written and composed his first opera, "Prima Donna," which premiered last summer at the Manchester International Festival. It will make its North American debut in June 2010 at Toronto's Luminato Festival and also be at London's Sadler's Wells in April of 2010. He has released seven albums and three DVDs to date, as well as appearing on numerous soundtracks and compilations and collaborating with artists including Elton John, David Byrne, Burt Bacharach and the Pet Shop Boys. Wainwright was nominated for a Grammy for the live recording from his Carnegie Hall concert, Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall, which has been released concurrently with a live DVD, Rufus! Rufus! Rufus! Does Judy! Judy! Judy!, which captures his celebrated Judy Garland tribute performance at the London Palladium. His previous album, Release The Stars, has achieved Gold sales status in Canada and the U.K. Last year, he released an album and DVD of a live concert with his band titled, Milwaukee at Last!!!

This sixth studio album from the popular Canadian singer/songwriter strips away the orchestral arrangements of past works like Want One and Want Two. The Shakespeare-inspired All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu features 12 stripped-down tracks that rely primarily on Wainwright's voice and piano.

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT - Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall (2007)

On June 14, 2006, Rufus Wainwright took to the stage to recreate "the Greatest Show of All Time ever staged in honor of the Greatest Show of All Time"--Judy Garland's legendary 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall; song-for-song, in its original venue. Garland fanatics feared a fiasco, but the show was a triumph. His sophisticated act of homage to his hero was both a loving tribute and an arch commentary on the original, featuring classics like "Over The Rainbow," "Come Rain Or Come Shine" and "Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart." Backed by a 36-piece orchestra and arranged by the Broadway famed Stephen Oremus (Wicked, Avenue Q), Rufus's vocal talent soars over those classic melodies on this 2-disc set. - amazon.com

PHILIP SAYCE - Steamroller (2012)

Steamroller is the latest effort from Philip Sayce and his fourth release with Provogue Records. The album comes just seven months after Ruby Electric. Over the past few years Sayce has built quite a cult following and Steamroller continues his ascension towards stardom. Steamroller opens with the ripping title track, which sends a clear message as to the direction of the album. Steamroller rocks hard. “Rhythm and Truth” and “Black Train” are rock anthems that kick some serious ass. The album isn’t just for rock lovers though. “Marigold” is a stand out ballad and “Holding On” shows Sayce’s ability to appeal to a wide audience. Steamroller also sees Sayce extend his vocal boundaries on the funky “Stung By A Woman,” the soulful “Beautiful,” and trippy “A Mystic.” Sayce has always been a terrific singer, but he really ups his game on Steamroller. The album closes with “Aberystwyth,” an instrumental tribute to Sayce’s hometown. Steamroller shows why Philip Sayce is a force to be reckoned with it. The album is an early contender for Album of the Year in 2012 and should continue to build his rapidly growing fan base. Steamroller is a must have for any rock fan, as 2012 surely promises to be the finest of Sayce’s career. - bluesrockreview.com

V.A. - Giants Of Country Blues Guitar, Vol. 1, 2 & 3 (1994 / 1999)

Giants of Country Blues Guitar, Vol. 1 is a curious and fascinating collection of field recordings of Mississippi country blues guitarists done between 1967 and 1991, most of the selections recorded in the musicians' homes, which means there is a good deal of incidental background noise, including people talking and laughing, dogs barking, and a whole lot of foot stomping. All of this adds a certain degree of intimacy to the performances, which range from excellent to incredibly shaky. Jessie Mae Hemphill, Sam Chatmon, and Jack Owens fare the best, while the lone track by Son House, "Baby Please Don't Dog Me 'Round," is a horrible recording, with more distorted foot stomp than guitar (although it is still a fascinating track, in spite of it all). Furry Lewis does "Going to Brownsville" here on electric guitar, which is interesting, since he was normally recorded in an acoustic setting. Also worth noting is a single cut by Mager Johnson, Tommy Johnson's brother, who does "Traveling Blues" on electric guitar. Not always a smooth listen, Giants of Country Blues Guitar, Vol. 1 has probably more archival and historical value than anything else, but the sheer intimacy of some of these recordings gives it a very special grace. - answers.com

Although the recording dates on Giants of Country Blues Guitar, Vol. 2 are quite modern, covering 1975-1991, the direct connections go back to the mid-century, Joe Willie Wilkins having played guitar for Sonny Boy Williamson II (i.e., Rice Miller) on his Trumpet sides. Actually, the players here, of whom the best known is R.L. Burnside, are practically a living museum of the rural blues styles on display. James "Son" Thomas' six songs represent the unvarnished authentic Delta blues style, while Cornelius Bright's track displays the "Bentonian" style embodied by Skip James. Burnside's performance of "Rollin' and Tumblin'," which would make Muddy Waters' Chess Records version seem almost slick, is worth the price of admission, but even he seems mannered and commercial next to some of what's here. Some of the rest -- especially Bright's and Jimmy Holmes' "Devil's Blues" -- sound like it came out of a time machine. - answers.com

Drawn from field recordings done by Andrea and Hannes Folterbauer in the Deep South in 1991 (one track is from 1981), Giants of Country Blues, Vol. 3 concentrates mostly on a trio of North Mississippi country blues players, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Ranie Burnette, and Junior Kimbrough (Jacob Stuckey is from Bentonia, MS and L.V. Conerly is from LA), whose rough, modal juke style has become well known in the blues community thanks to the various Fat Possum releases. The chief attraction of the tracks collected here is the complete lack of slickness they demonstrate, giving these traditional blues pieces the kind of immediacy and freshness that is too often lacking in what passes for blues on the contemporary commercial circuit. These are artists whose music is still in service to their local communities, providing entertainment at house parties and juke joints. Highlights include Hemphill's "Train, Train," Roosevelt Holts' update of Tommy Johnson's classic "Big Road Blues," Kimbrough's signature "All Night Long," and Tommy West's shaky but affecting version of "Catfish Blues." - answers.com

ZUCCHERO - All The Best (2007)

Adelmo Fornaciari, more commonly known by his stage name Zucchero Fornaciari or simply Zucchero, is an Italian rock singer. His music is largely inspired by gospel, blues and rock music, and alternates between ballads and more rhythmic boogie-like pieces. Zucchero is the Italian word for sugar. In his career, spanning four decades, Fornaciari has sold over 40 million records around the world and has achieved numerous awards, including two World Music Awards, six IFPI Europe Platinum Awards and a Grammy Award nomination-

Guitarist and singer-songwriter Adelmo Fornaciari, better known by the moniker Zucchero, built a following in his native Italy with his unique brand of adult contemporary pop, a following that expanded internationally as his career progressed. Geared specifically to American audiences, this release of ALL THE BEST includes some of Zucchero's best-loved tunes (such as "Senza Una Donna" and "Wonderful Life"), and wonderful guest performances from the likes of John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis, and Luciano Pavarotti.

TOM WAITS - Used Songs 1973 - 1980 (2001)

Those only familiar with Tom Waits's experimental post-Swordfishtrombones music on Island are often surprised and delighted to discover the singer-songwriter's pre-Swordfishtrombones work on Elektra. A sampling of Waits's nascent recordings is spotlighted on this Rhino compilation. Offering up a beat "hobo" persona that's part Jack Kerouac and part Charles Bukowski, Waits delivered a more traditional American musical persona back then. In fact, some of his melodies approached Stephen Foster territory (witness the absolutely gorgeous "Heart of Saturday Night"). "Ol' 55" became famous via an Eagles cover, Bruce Springsteen would immortalize "Jersey Girl," and "Whistlin' Past the Graveyard"--which highlights his Louis Armstrong-meets-Captain Beefheart vocals of the period--still rocks. V.A. - Doctors, Professors Kings & Queens - The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans (2004)

America's most musical city is a daunting topic for any collection, even a four-disc box set. From Dixieland, jazz, blues, rock 'n' roll, R&B, and funk to the Francophone world of swamp pop, Cajun, and zydeco to the folk musics of vodou and the Mardi Gras Indians, the Crescent City has a number of musical histories to tell. Fortunately, it also supplies a homegrown metaphor: gumbo. That savory stew of disparate ingredients is mirrored in the magpie assortment of music - old, new, Cajun, and very blue - on parade here. Any New Orleans cook will tell you that the secret to gumbo is the roux, the concentrated base of the dish, and compiler Chuck Taggart (who supplies enlightening track-by-track notes) gets that base just right. You couldn't have a New Orleans box without Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Professor Longhair, Ernie K. Doe, Fats Domino, and the Meters - and they're all here. Of course, they're mostly limited to a track or two a piece, but that's the nature of a set like this. Spice-wise, this set swings toward the jazzy sounds of black New Orleans, leaving more rural Cajun numbers as palate-cleansers, and this, too, is as it should be, popular conceptions of the Big Easy to the contrary. The Big Ol' Box endeavors to be something of a not-for-tourists guide - it hits the expected sites but also the names that fill the weekly listings of OffBeat, the local music bible. John Cleary, Galactic, the Iguanas, Anders Osborne, even Fredy Omar, the city's resident salsa bandleader, have their moment. The contrast between classic material from Alan Toussaint and Ernie K-Doe and some lighter-weight contemporary interpretations is more often than not felicitous, with only a few clunkers coming from the current generation (James Booker's "Classified" is NOLA blues at its most derivative). But there's so much love in the collection - a hilarious list of "why we love New Orleans" is a highlight of the liner notes - that it's easy to overlook even these. The best test of a collection like this is to just put it on, one disc after another - and if it isn't the soundtrack to one helluva party, then grits ain't groceries and you've never been to New Orleans. - Barnes & Noble

OLGA - Now Is The Time (2006)

Raised in San Francisco by Austrian parents, Olga - in the fashion of a roots-music Cher - goes only by her first name. (Her full name is Olga Wilhelmine Munding-Mathus, for those who want to know.) Backed by her husband Jimbo Mathus (of the Squirrel Nut Zippers) and the Clarksdale Sound Machine, she has released a winning collection of originals and traditionals with a - broadly speaking - blues sensibility, with occasional excursions into rock, folk and jazz-pop that neverfeel jarringly discordant. If Bonnie Raitt hadn't surrendered long ago to the blandishments of Adult Contemporary Radio, and instead stuck closer to where she started, she would probably sound something like this. By which I mean to say, I'd far rather listen to Olga. Inevitably, with her modestly eclectic approach, I like some songs more than I like others, but I don't dislike anything, either. Her vocal style is all earth and smoke, sultry and sexy but understated about it, a sound that feels born of dirt roads and urban nightclubs alike. None of this is country music, but her "Ain't It a Shame" - not the 1950s Fats Domino hit - in another arrangement would do some Nashville act proud. Her lyrics are ably composed if thematically unadventurous, (by her own testimony) confessional songs about romance's up and downs. Mostly, the downs, which are always more interesting if you're somebody other than the one who's living them. Olga and Jimbo, who produce, set the songs in laid-back electric and acoustic arrangements that manage never to lapse into vapidity.

TRACKS:
01. Now is the Time 02. Your Love Don't Work Like Mine 03. Weary 04. Ain't it a Shame 05. What's the Matter With the Mill? 06. I Won't Ask 07. Can You Forgive Me 08. Fool 09. Stealin' 10. Take Your Rest, Daddy 11. Gotta Keep Moving 12. GDTRFB

THE ROLLING STONES - More Rocks: Big Hits & Fazed Cookies (1972) [2002 Remastered]

When you're anthologizing the Rolling Stones, one of the first things you must accept is that you're doomed to failure. No one album can possibly tell the story of the band that's explored so many different musical avenues and recorded so many memorable songs. Still, the double-disc best of HOT ROCKS, and this, its sequel, come perilously close. This set wisely doesn't attempt to be comprehensive. Instead, it just picks out various gems from different points in the band's development. Their R&B/roots period is well-represented by covers of "It's All Over Now" and "Not Fade Away." "She's A Rainbow" and "2000 Light Years From Home" are monuments to the band's psychedelic phase. "No Expectations" and "Let It Bleed" are bluesy tunes that cut to the quick, emphasizing the Stones' gift for visceral compositions and the sound that defined what was--arguably--their greatest period (the late '60s). Though HOT ROCKS is the place to turn for a comprehensive cross section of the band's biggest and most essential hits, MORE HOT ROCKS is an excellent companion piece, bringing together some of the Stones' lesser known but equally satisfying work. - amazon.com

DISC 1:
01. Tell Me 02. Not Fade Away 03. Last Time, The 04. It's All Over Now 05. Good Times, Bad Times 06. I'm Free 07. Out of Time 08. Lady Jane 09. Sittin' on a Fence 10. Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing in the Shadow? 11. Dandelion 12. We Love You

DISC 2: 01. She's a Rainbow 02. 2000 Light Years From Home 03. Child of the Moon - (RMK) 04. No Expectations 05. Let It Bleed 06. What to Do 07. Fortune Teller 08. Poison Ivy - (Version 1) 09. Everybody Needs Somebody to Love 10. Come On 11. Money 12. Bye Bye Johnnie 13. Poison Ivy - (Version 2) 14. I've Been Loving You Too Long 15. I Can't Be Satisfied 16. Long Long While

BOB DYLAN - Oh Mercy (1989)

The '80s was a particularly shifting, uncertain decade for Bob Dylan's creative voice. But he capped it off with his first album of all-original material in several years and his best since Infidels. A lot of the credit for Oh Mercy's distinctive appeal has been given to producer-musician Daniel Lanois (who backs Dylan on all but one cut), and there's no denying the effect of his magnetic, fog-thick sound sculpturing here. Overlays of lap steel, dobro, and mercy keys along with a slithering subterranean bass evoke a complete sonic climate, and the synergy between Lanois and Dylan would have a huge payoff with 1997's devastating Time Out of Mind. But however tightly produced, Oh Mercy also displays Dylan at the peak of his songwriting craft, fracturing words and phrases for the things-fall-apart jeremiads of "Political World" and "Everything Is Broken" and stringing images together for the noirish ballad "Man in the Long Black Coat." There's the usual dichotomy between Dylan's slashing accusatory mode ("What Was It You Wanted") and the self-effacement of "What Good Am I?" Aside from the miscalculated, sappy "Where Teardrops Fall" (the disc's sore thumb), this album has the classic staying power of Dylan's finest efforts. - amazon.com

TRACKS:
01. Political World 02. Where Teardrops Fall 03. Everything Is Broken 04. Ring Them Bells 05. Man in the Long Black Coat 06. Most of the Time 07. What Good Am I? 08. Disease of Conceit 09. What Was It You Wanted 10. Shooting Star

JOAN OSBORNE - Bring It On Home (2012)

For her seventh album, Kentucky-born singer-songwriter Joan Osborne returns to her roots—the soul, blues and R&B she sang while coming up in New York. But perhaps she shouldn’t have waited so long. Featuring covers of songs from the likes of Ike and Tina Turner and Muddy Waters, Bring It on Home sounds less like the recordings of a woman throwing herself into the music that moves her than those of a tired artist running out of ideas. Osborne’s voice has always outshined her songwriting chops, but on this record, it sounds decidedly on the wane, especially on tracks like “Shake Your Hips” and “Champagne and Wine.” Without the power and finesse she exhibited on earlier recordings, Osborne lacks the tools to make these old classics sound fresh again.

TRACKS:
01. I Don’t Need No Doctor 02. Bring It On Home 03. Roll Like a Big Wheel 04. Game of Love 05. Broken Wings 06. Shoorah! Shoorah! 07. I Want to Be Loved 08. The Same Love That Made Me Laugh 09. Shake Your Hips 10. I’m Qualified 11. Champagne and Wine 12. Rhymes

JOHNNY WINTER - Live in Houston - Busted in Austin (1991)

When you listen the discs, you recognize the same recording, Johnny presents "my new bass player" I.P.Sweat ( who sings the song "Busted in Austin"), Pat Rush playing slide guitar on "Walking by Myself". You hear a drummer (obviously) that Johnny does not presents. You do not hear Edgar playing no instruments (there are only a drum kit, a bass guitar and two electric guitars), and Edgar doesn't sings. So where's Edgar? Only on the sleeve, with Uncle Joe Turner, only for a fake date of 1969. On the end of "Jumping Jack Flash", when starts a instrumental song, when Johnny usually have used to present the band, he announces his "new" record "White, Hot & Blue". This instrumental song fades out in about one minute, and is present only in "Walking by Myself" (Relix Records). The only reason to get "Live in Houston, busted in Austin" is for its sleeve, with a beautiful photo of Johnny. On "Live in Houston" "Go Johnny Go" is actually "Johnny B.Goode" and missed "It's All Over Now" and "Jumpin'Jack Flash". - vinylrecords.ch

BONNIE RAITT - Slipstream (2012)

Bonnie Raitt stepped back from her career as a musician following 2005's Souls Alike as she dealt with the passing of her parents, her brother, and her best friend in succession, but she's now returned renewed and focused with her first studio album in seven years, Slipstream, released on her own new Redwing label imprint. Bonnie Raitt's new album Slipstream is daring, bluesy, and steeped with the inimitable slide guitar and soulful vocals that could only be hers. Out April, 10, 2012, Slipstream marks her first new album in seven years, and the debut for her newly minted label, Redwing Records. While most of Slipstream is self-produced and features Raitt's longtime touring band, four of the album s songs were helmed by celebrated producer Joe Henry and showcase his usual crew of extraordinary musicians. Additional guests include Bill Frisell, Al Anderson, Ireland's Paul Brady and Maia Sharp. The album's twelve tracks feature Raitt's renditions of songs by such luminaries as Bob Dylan, Joe Henry and Loudon Wainwright III. An updated, reggae-fied version of Gerry Rafferty's 'Right Down the Line' leads the charge as the album s first single.

JETHRO TULL & IAN ANDERSON - Thick As A Brick 2 (2012)

In 1972, Ian Anderson wrote and recorded the Jethro Tull Progressive Rock classic album `Thick As A Brick'. The lyrics were credited at the time to the fictitious child character, Gerald Bostock, whose parents supposedly lied about his age. The record instantly became a number one Billboard Chart album and enjoyed considerable success in many countries of the world. So, forty years on, what would Gerald Bostock - aged fifty in 2012 - be doing today? What might have befallen him? The anniversary "part two" album will examine the possible different paths that the precocious young schoolboy, Gerald Bostock, might have taken later in life through alter-ego characters with song-section identities illustrating the hugely varied potential twists and turns of fate and opportunity. Not just for Gerald but to echo how our own lives develop, change direction and ultimately conclude through chance encounters and interventions, however tiny and insignificant they might seem at the time. - amazon.com

THE BAND OF HEATHENS - The Double Down: Live In Denver - Vol.1 & 2 (2012)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Most probably, the Band Of Heathens is still the most exciting act from Austin, Texas - no small feat in a city filled with a plethora of exciting acts. With three studio records on Blue Rose and constant touring, the quintet has raised the bar on how southern roots rock, live entertainment and a modern-day Americana attitude come together in one act. The brand-new live CD+DVD set The Double Down - Live In Denver provides ample proof for why this band is such an excellent and extremely successful live act.

On October 7 & 8, 2011, the ideal opportunity presented itself in the form of the Double Down Weekend in Denver, Co. In two shows on consecutive nights, the Heathens played extensive, diverse, immensely enjoyable, high-quality sets - just like we've come to know and love them in the last maybe three-and-a-half years. Both shows are completely different with an overlap of maybe three songs. And not only that. While fans are familiar with the studio versions of most songs, the band manages to make them feel fresh and alive, focus on different nuances or stress new aspects even after hundreds and hundreds of live performances. Both shows were recorded in audio & video. A wonderful selection of both gigs is now available on 2 CDs and 2 DVDs as The Double Down - Live In Denver, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. There are 11 songs on vol. 1 with two bonus tracks on the DVD. 13 songs on vol. 2 plus "behind the scenes" footage. Both volumes together rack up a playing time of 160 minutes, much longer than a regular concert.

Vol.1:

01. You’re Gonna Miss Me 02. Golden Calf 03. Say 04. Somebody Tell The Truth 05. Let Your Heart Not Be Troubled 06. LA County Blues 07. Enough 08. What’s This World 09. Right Here with Me 10. Nothing to See Here 11. Should Have Known

ZAC BROWN BAND - Pass the Jar: Live from the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta (2010)

Although they’ve enjoyed commercial success with fine country singles like “Toes,” "Whatever It Is," and the infectious, laid-back classic anthem “Chicken Fried,” the Zac Brown Band are really all about their live shows, and this three-disc set (two discs of music plus a DVD) captures the reverent, communal feel of the band’s performances. Recorded at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta on October 30, 2009 as a benefit for Athens’ historic Georgia Theatre, the show features a host of guest stars, including Kid Rock on “Can’t You See,” Little Big Town on “Colder Weather,” and Shawn Mullins on “Toes,” as well as band performances of “Chicken Fried” and the group’s other key songs. What makes a Zac Brown Band show really work, though, is the way the band pays homage to its influences, and there are intelligent covers here of Paul McCartney’s “Blackbird,” Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released,” Charlie Daniels' “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” and the Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” and fine segues from the country-reggae of “Where the Boat Leaves From” into Bob Marley’s “One Love” and from “Free” into Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic.” It all flows naturally and easily, making this set a wonderful introduction to a very special band. - allmusic.com

NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS - Hill Country Revue: Live at Bonnaroo (2004)

The set kicks off with a version of Fred McDowell's "Shake 'Em on Down," proving this crew knows their history. Modern blues legend R.L. Burnside guests on a handful of his own tunes, including "Jumper on the Line" and "Snake Drive," while his grandson Cody raps on the hard-driving "Be So Glad." For all of the music's deep blues roots, though, the Allstars play with the technical flash of a rock band, lending sophistication to the proceedings.

Recorded live at the 2004 Bonnaroo Festival, this North Mississippi Allstars record is a family affair. The concert is an endless parade of both blood relatives and community-related musicians, all of whom hail from the same area of Mississippi. The family lines are represented by the Dickinsons (Allstars Luther and Cody, and their father Jim), the Burnsides (Duwayne, Garry, Cody, and R.L.), and Othar Turner's descendents (Turner's Rising Star Fife & Drum Band made some of the earliest and most compelling music to emerge from the region). There are also a few "extended family" members thrown in for good measure. - cduniverse.com

ERIC CLAPTON - Songs For Pattie [MVR Special Sampler] (2008)

Eric Clapton was so madly in love with Pattie Boyd and so tjavascript:%20void(0);orn up by the love he had for her his best friends’ (George Harrison) wife, that he wrote these words:

"Have you ever loved a woman so much you tremble in pain?
Have you ever loved a woman so much you tremble in pain?
And all the time you know she bears another man's name.........

When you listen to this song you get just a touch of the pain Eric was driven to by his love for this woman. Pattie Boyd inspired Eric Clapton to write some of his best and most memorable songs like "Layla"," Wonderful Tonight" and "Why Does Love Have to Be So Sad". She also inspired George to his greatest love song, "Something", "I Need You" and "Think For Yourself"."

B.B. KING - Live At The Royal Albert Hall 2011 (2012)

He may be 85 these days, but B.B. King is still B.B. King, and any time he sings or delivers those signature clean, jazzy, and warm guitar lines, it's an extra gift from a musician who has given us listeners and fans so much for so long. This warm, celebratory, and good-natured live set was recorded on June 28, 2011 at London's Royal Albert Hall and features King in chatty good humor and a whole host of guests, including guitarist Derek Trucks, singer Susan Tedeschi, the Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood, Simply Red's Mick Hucknall, and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. King does what he's always done, and on signature songs like "Rock Me Baby" and "The Thrill Is Gone," one gets the hopeful feeling that King could actually go on and do this forever. He's is in a talkative mood here, and the T-Bone Burnett story he tells as the introduction to a version of Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" is a funny yet tender narrative that touches on age, memory, and everything the blues can be. It's obvious that King is enjoying himself, and if this isn't the best live set he's ever done, it might be the warmest. At 85 King is still engaging, comfortable with an audience, and once he slides into one of those sweet-as-Memphis-honey guitar runs, he's everything he's always been. There's only one B.B. King and that he is still that, after all the years of fine music he's given us, is a miracle, a blessing, and a treasure. - cduniverse.com

DR. JOHN - Locked Down (2012)

New Orleans legend Dr. John's Nonesuch debut, produced by Black Keys guitarist and uber-fan Dan Auerbach, distills half a century of this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee's picaresque musical history, melding his shamanistic stage persona with the authority of a consummate studio musician, the cosmic conjurer with the street-savvy poet. The ten new songs on Locked Down, written by Dr. John with Auerbach and a handpicked crew of backing musicians, combine incantatory chants ("Ellegua") and often politically charged raps ("Revolution") with candid and soulful reflections ("My Children, My Angels"), swaggering R&B ("Big Shot"), and a healthy dose of hypnotic, simmering funk ("The King Of Izness"). As with much of what this multiple Grammy-award winning singer and composer has recorded over the last five decades, the Big Easy is the musical and spiritual jumping-off point, but these new tracks incorporate a world's worth of influences, from gospel and blues to psychedelic rock and Afro-beat. - amazon.com

01. Locked Down 02. Revolution 03. Big Shot 04. Ice Age 05. Getwaway 06. Kingdom Of Izzness 07. You Lie 08. Eleggua 09. My Children, My Angels 10. God's Sure Good
