BBC Folk Awards 2012 features 32 tracks that span three discs, all of which boast more than a few gems. With the recent success of artists like Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling, the contemporary U.K. folk scene has undergone a bit of a revival, and this highly listenable overview backs that notion up with stand-out offerings coming from artists both established (Oysterband, June Tabor, Martin Simpson, Christy Moore) and relatively new to the court (Lady Maisery, the Unthanks, Jackie Oates, Blair Dunlop). ERJA LYYTINEN - Songs From The Road (2012)

Following acclaimed releases by the late Jeff Healy and American blues legend Luther Allison ("DVD of the Year" at the 2011 Blues Music Awards), the newest entry in Ruf Records' award-winning Songs from the Road series comes from Finnish artist Erja Lyytinen. The singer/songwriter/guitarist emerged on the international scene as part of the Pilgrimage project in 2005 and has since become a fixture in clubs and concert halls throughout Europe. Lyytinen's songs skillfully blend slide guitar-driven, down-home blues with elements of rock, pop, jazz and soul. Guns N' Roses took the music scene by storm in the 80's with their wild image, irreverent attitudes and a musical repertoire that covered all points of the compass, attracting rockers as well as pop music fans and starry eyed adolescents. Bob Margolin is not exactly unknown in the blues world, but it just might surprise even long-time admirers just how raw, nasty, and day-back the Blues Around the World release is. The first track doesn't just come tearing out of your speakers, it rips up the housing and shreds that fancy cloth-covering you liked because it matched the sofa, spitting tobacco and swigging a brew as it does. Too late for worries about furniture, though, bub, 'cause we're just getting started. Mike Sponza, an Italian musician and long-term fan of Margolin's work, invited Bob to accompany him and the band on a 10 show European tour, and the result was so good that the pair decided to hit the studio and break out a disc before Margolin headed back stateside. RONNIE EARL & THE BROADCASTERS - Blues Guitar Virtuoso Live In Europe (1995)

Although not released until 1995, this CD was recorded live in 1993 in Bremen, Germany. Live in Europe is Earl's tribute to his major influences, and Ronnie plays his favorite guitar throughout: a 1962 red Strat. The fast, driving "San-Ho-Zay" and "Blues for the West Side" go out to Magic Sam; "The Stumble" to Freddie King; "Thank You Mr. T-Bone" to T-Bone Walker and Duke Robillard (who inspired Earl to learn T-Bone). "Thank You Mr. T-Bone" features some cool call-and-response between Earl and Bruce Katz on the Hammond B-3. It segues nicely into "Akos," where you'll find more great B-3 (check out the improvised "Summertime" riff). An all-instrumental offering, Live in Europe includes a handful of tunes found on its predecessor, Still River, including "Szeren," "Rego Park Blues," and the aforementioned "Blues for the West Side." "Contrition," a slow, soulful tune penned by Katz, has some jaw-dropping runs by Earl. One can only imagine what it must have been like to be one of the lucky souls at this show. The only fault to be found on this album is the mislabeling of several tunes on the cover. (For example, "The Stumble" is listed as "Not Now Kovitch.") SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY & THE ASBURY JUKES - Jukes Live At The Bottom Line [Promo Live LP] (1976)

This is a wonderful artifact of the early days of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. This concert, from the Bottom Line in New York City, was actually a live WNEW-FM radio broadcast from October 17 1976, that occurred shortly after the release of the band's debut I Don't Want to Go Home. Five of the tracks are from that album including a terrific version of "Fever", and "You Mean So Much to Me" with Ronnie Spector sharing the vocals with Southside just like on the studio version. The real highlight though is "Havin' a Party", undoubtedly the most recognizable tune. This completely reworked version of the old Sam Cooke classic became an FM radio staple in the late seventies, and is still a regular part of Southside's shows. Also included are three additional covers which don't appear on any other Asbury Jukes album: "Searchin'" (the old Coasters tune), "Snatchin' It Back" (previously done by Clarence Carter), and the Junior Wells tune "Little by Little". The CD also features Southside Johnny's wonderful and legendary stage patter, pontifications, and harassment - probably the best examples on any of his official live releases.

Originally this was a non-commercial promotional album exclusively for radio stations. Prior to 1996, this was not commercially available as a complete set until the entire album was finally officially released as a Japanese import. While out of print for several years, it was re-released in 2010, and is now available at a reasonable cost. I highly recommend it for any Jukes fan. - amazon.com

NORTON BUFFALO & THE KNOCKOUTS - King Of The Highway (2000)

King of the Highway is the first solo release from blues harp wailer Norton Buffalo and his band, the Knockouts, since the release of 1978's Desert Horizon. Norton Buffalo is an in-demand studio musician who has played on numerous sessions in all genres of music, highlighted by his involvement with blues slide guitarist Roy Rogers. The majority of King of the Highway is enjoyable (while occasionally predictable) straight-ahead modern blues mixed at times with an occasional hint of New Orleans zydeco rhythm courtesy of Buffalo's unamplificated harmonica. One of the main strengths of this 13 track Blind Pig date is the loose feeling brought by friends including Elvin Bishop, Steve Miller (Buffalo has been a member of his band for 25 years), and Merl Saunders, gathering together simply to jam. - cduniverse.com

The Wall is less a collection of songs than a single work, which is sometimes frustrating; the plot lacks enough coherence to hold the snippets of music together. However, there are occasional flashes of brilliance on what arguably ranks as Pink Floyd's most ambitious project. Most of these come from the fully developed songs, which have become classics in their own right; "Hey You," "Mother," and especially "Comfortably Numb" are subtly incredible pieces of music. Amos Lee is an American singer-songwriter whose musical style encompasses folk, rock and soul. He was born in Philadelphia and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in English. After working as a schoolteacher and bartender he began to pursue a career in music. His manager submitted a demo recording to Blue Note Records which resulted in a recording contract and an association with Norah Jones. Since that time Lee has recorded four albums on Blue Note Records and has toured as an opening act for Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, Merle Haggard, Van Morrison, John Prine, Dave Matthews Band and Adele and his music has appeared on the soundtracks of numerous TV shows and movies. He has performed on several late night TV shows and at a voter registration rally for Barack Obama. In 2011, his album Mission Bell debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and his music has been described as "1970s folk rock and rustic soul".

The double album was a good way for the band to prove what they can deliver on stage and show off their respectful feedback from the crowds. Working with producer Kevin Shirley is a definite high level of musicianship and originality as Shirley’s standards goes back to bands such as Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Metallica and many more iconic bands. Tracks such as “Man in the Middle” and “The Outsider” are a good example of heavy rock blues that helps sell out their concerts at small or large venues. All in all, it seems that going to a Black Country Communion concert is a good activity, whether it’s to hang in the back and nod from a distance or jump around at the front and let the music take you away. It’s hard to believe you would want to be doing anything else with your day. The band is ready to start recording their 3rd album later this year.

Coinciding with musical and personal upheaval – and a new partner who finally got Paul Weller (pictured, right) into David Bowie – Sonik Kicks is the third in a triumvarite of experimental albums that seems to be the Woking mod's answer to the Thin White Duke's Berlin trilogy. Like 2008's 22 Dreams and 2010's Wake Up the Nation, Weller's 11th solo effort rampages from station to station: motorik Krautrock bleeds into to wah-wah freakouts to strings-drenched soul to pastoral psychedelia and even heavy dub, sometimes simultaneously. It's a dizzying but never baffling musical odyssey, anchored at crucial moments by more conventional songs – the imaginary Bowie-Blur collaboration That Dangerous Age or By the Waters, a soul ballad reminiscent of the Style Council and his early solo work. With the likes of the lovely Be Happy Children rooted in domestic bliss, fans of the more politicised Weller may miss the state-of-the-nation grumbling that inspired the Jam and Wake Up the Nation. GRAVY TRAIN - (A Ballad Of) A Peaceful Man (1971)

Gravy Train were a progressive rock group from Lancashire, England, formed by vocalist and guitarist Norman Barratt in 1969. Together with J.D. Hughes (keyboards, vocals, wind), Lester Williams (bass, vocals) and Barry Davenport (drums) they recorded four studio albums. The first two were released on the Vertigo label, and the latter two by Dawn Records. The band was dissolved in 1975. Little is known what happened with its members except for Barratt, who appeared in Mandalaband for their second and final album in 1978. He went on to found the Barratt Band, which recorded albums in the early 1980s. Les Williams has been working as Ocean Entertainments - an agency for bands and acts - since the 1980s.

Released in late 1971, (A Ballad of) A Peaceful Man was Gravy Train's second - and probably their most praised - album. Unlike their heavier debut, this album sports some lovely string arrangements, provided by Nick Harrison. A unique feature of the album is that it splits the heavy tracks from the lighter tracks: all the ballads are on side 1, while all the rockers are on side 2.

Robert Clark "Bob" Seger is an American rock and roll singer-songwriter, guitarist and pianist. As a locally successful Detroit-area artist, he performed and recorded as Bob Seger and the Last Heard and Bob Seger System throughout the 1960s. By the early 1970s, he had dropped the "System" from his recordings, and he continued to strive for broader success with other various bands. In 1973, he put together The Silver Bullet Band, an evolving group of Detroit-area musicians, with whom he became most successful. In 1976, he achieved a national breakout with the album Night Moves. On his studio albums, he also worked extensively with the Alabama-based Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, appearing on several of Seger's best selling singles and albums. A roots rocker with a classic raspy, shouting voice, Seger wrote and recorded songs that dealt with blue-collar themes and was an exemplar of heartland rock. Seger has recorded many hits, including "Night Moves", "Turn the Page", "We've Got Tonight", "Against the Wind", and "Like a Rock", and also co-wrote the Eagles number one hit "Heartache Tonight". His iconic recording of "Old Time Rock and Roll" was named one of the Songs of the Century in 2001. With a career spanning five decades, Seger continues to perform and record today.
