DEBORAH COLEMAN, CANDYE KANE, DANI WILDE - Blues Caravan: Guitars & Feathers (2008)

Europe's Ruf label has a history of packaging blues artists, especially women, together for tours, and this one, recorded live in Bonn, Germany in January, 2008, works especially well. Newcomer Dani Wilde joins veterans Candye Kane and Deborah Coleman (the latter had been part of the previous Ruf blues package) for a rousing performance of blues and soul that condenses and displays the finest attributes of each artist. The tour borrows its name from Kane's 2007 Guitar'd and Feathered album, but it's the U.K.'s Wilde who makes the strongest impression, perhaps because she's somewhat of an unknown entity (her debut was not available in America as of this album's appearance, yet had been released in Europe). As in the past, the performers open and close the concert together, then concentrate on individual sets with a terrific road band backing up each one. The proceedings kick off in strong form with the trio's cover of Ray Charles' defiant "Won't Leave," trading off lead vocals. That drives the raw, party groove for the remainder of the show. Wilde's opening four original songs feature her guitar, but it's her growling, insistent vocals, somewhat similar to those of Janis Joplin, that are such a revelation. She hisses, yowls, croons and snarls her way through a set that ends too soon with the nearly six-minute slow blues of "I Love You More Than I Hate Myself" an unanticipated highlight of the night. Following that would be a challenged for anyone, yet Kane tries her hardest, strutting her way through typically sassy, double entendre jump blues-influenced music that reprises three songs from her recent disc and closes with the appropriately titled "Toughest Girl Alive." Fun and frisky. Coleman appears next, churning out sharp guitar to Luther Allison's "Fight" and ZZ Top's "Jesus Just Left Chicago," some inspired, even unusual covers that she stamps with her unique voice and red solos. The trio returns for raucous versions of "Something's Got a Hold of Me" and a rollicking ten-minute "Whole Lotta Love" that starts as a shuffle then shifts to Led Zeppelin's well-known arrangement to help close this high energy gig on an appropriately rowdy note. - allmusic.com

WIDESPREAD PANIC

One of the many neo-hippie jam bands inheriting the road-warrior mantle left behind by the Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic established a devout grassroots following on the strength of constant touring and a loose, rootsy brand of Southern rock informed by jazz and blues textures. The group's origins date to 1982, when vocalist John Bell and guitarist Mike Houser first began playing together while attending college in Athens, GA. When bassist Dave Schools left academia to join the duo the next year, Widespread Panic were officially born. The band recorded its debut single, "Coconut Image," in 1986; drummer Todd Nance joined soon after, followed by the addition of percussionist Domingo "Sunny" Ortiz and finally keyboardist John "JoJo" Hermann.

Widespread Panic released their energetic debut LP, Space Wrangler, in 1988 on the tiny Landslide label. After several years of relentless touring, they signed to major label Capricorn, which issued the group's eponymously titled sophomore effort in 1991. Appearances on the 1992 and 1993 H.O.R.D.E. tours greatly expanded their fan base prior to 1993's Everyday, while 1994's Ain't Life Grand spawned the AOR hits "Airplane" and "Can't Get High." After teaming with fellow Georgian Vic Chesnutt to record 1995's Nine High a Pallet under the name Brute, Widespread Panic reconvened for the album Bombs and Butterflies, released in 1997. In the spring of 1998, the band released Light Fuse, Get Away, and 'Til the Medicine Takes followed a year later. Another Joyous Occasion (2000) and Don't Tell the Band (2001) marked the band's first albums of the new millennium. In June 2002, Widespread Panic returned to the road for their annual summer tour of the States, but within a month, founding member and lead guitarist Michael Houser had to bow out. Houser was battling cancer and returned home to Athens, GA, to rest while guitarist George McConnell stepped in to finish the tour. On August 10, 2002, Houser succumbed to complications from pancreatic cancer at the age of 40.

Houser's wish was that the band would carry on after his passing, and with McConnell becoming a permanent replacement, Widespread Panic did just that. Their next full-length album, Ball, was released in April of 2003. Night of Joy and Über Cobra, both of which appeared in late March 2004, featured live selections from two of the band's shows at The House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, SC, while they toured in support of Ball. These marked Widespread Panic's second and third live efforts, follow-ups up to 2000's Another Joyous Occasion. They returned to the studio later that year for the Halloween-themed covers record Jackassolantern, and again in 2006 for Earth to America. Free Somehow, the band's tenth studio album (and first with newcomer guitarist Jimmy Herring), followed in early 2008, with Dirty Side Down appearing in 2010; it was followed by the in-concert set Live in the Classic City II in the fall. - allmusic.com

ARMAGEDDON - Armageddon (1975)

Armageddon was the last band to feature ex-Yardbird Keith Relf. The former lead singer and harmonica player of the band that launched Clapton, Beck and Page, Relf had abandoned his blues-guitar band roots when he founded Renaissance in the late 1960s. Relf left Renaissance after two albums (actually half way through the second album) due to frustrations with the music business and being tired of touring. However, when he created Armageddon, he became involved with one of the best guitar rock albums of the 70's. After the dissolution of Steamhammer, Relf, and ex-Steamhammer members, Martin Pugh (guitar) and Louis Cennamo (bass) came to L.A. and hooked up with ex-Captain Beyond and Johnny Winter drummer Bobby Caldwell to form Armageddon.

"Armageddon" was the only album released by British/American hard rock group Armageddon in 1975. It features Keith Relf of Yardbirds and Renaissance fame, Martin Pugh, lead guitarist on Rod Stewart's "An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down" and with Steamhammer, US-American Bobby Caldwell who was the drummer of Captain Beyond and with Johnny Winter, and Louis Cennamo who was the bass player for Renaissance and Steamhammer. Armageddon sought to create a style unlike any other in rock. - wikipedia

GRATEFUL DEAD - Dave's Picks Vol.1 - Live At Mosque, Richmond, VA, May 25, 1977 (2012) thumbup

Dave's Picks Volume 1 is a three-CD live album by the rock band the Grateful Dead. It was recorded on May 25, 1977, at the Mosque in Richmond, Virginia, and contains the complete concert from that date. It was released on February 1, 2012. The album is the first in the Dave's Picks series of Grateful Dead archival releases, the successor to the Road Trips series.[6] It is a limited edition of 12,000 individually numbered copies. The cover art, by Scott McDougall, depicts the hands of two skeletons in outer space, fighting with lightsabers. This is a reference to the film Star Wars, which was released the same date that the concert was recorded.

The song list from 5/25/77 might not reveal much out of the ordinary (though it's great selection of tunes), but the playing is definitely extraordinary. The first set contains outstanding versions of favorites such as "Mississippi Half-Step," "Jack Straw," "Cassidy" and "Lazy Lightning" > "Supplication." And the second set is primo-grade '77 from start to finish. The buoyant "Scarlet Begonias" > "Fire on the Mountain" that kicks things off sets the tone, but then the rest of the set is a deftly played medley starting with "Estimated" and moving into "He's Gone," a primal drum workout from Mickey and Bill, a heart-pounding version of "The Other One" that's split by "Wharf Rat" (the only time those songs were played in that sequence), a joyful "Wheel," and then a double-dose of Chuck Berry to bring it all back to rock 'n' roll basics. Talk about a thrill ride! The three-disc Dave's Picks, Volume One was mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman, includes a colorful booklet with photos and a lively historical essay, and comes in a digipak made of 100% recycled and PCW materials. - amazon.com

PHIL LESH & FRIENDS - Love Will See You Through (1999)

Phil Lesh's first solo album, Love Will See You Through, is a double-disc set of live performances culled from a series of Phil Lesh and Friends concerts Lesh gave after successfully completing liver transplant surgery in late 1998. Lesh used these shows to get back to speed, so he surrounded himself with friendly musicians -- including Jorma Kaukonen, Prairie Prince, Zoe Ellis, Steve Kimock, and Pete Sears -- and concentrated on songs the Grateful Dead routinely played in concert, along with some tunes associated with Kaukonen. The songs and the styles are familiar, but that's part of the charm -- listening to this music is like reuniting with old friends, fully aware of their conversational rhythms and quirks. If you're not in the mood, it can be a little irritating, but in the right frame of mind, it's a breezy, enjoyable experience to hear the old tunes played in the classic fashion. Even if it is Lesh's first solo album, Love Will See You Through isn't a major release in the post-Dead canon, but it certainly proves that Lesh has returned to full strength, and Deadheads will no doubt embrace this endearingly low-key music. - allmusic.com

PHIL LESH & FRIENDS - There and Back Again [Limited Edition] (2002)

With a pair of reunion shows of surviving Grateful Dead members slated for August 2002, the timing couldn't have been better for Phil Lesh's solo debut THERE AND BACK AGAIN. Enlisting the aid of Allman Brother/Gov't Mule guitarist Warren Haynes, Aquarium Rescue Unit fretman Jimmy Herring, Zen Trickster keyboardist Rob Barraco, and Bruce Hornsby drummer John Molo, Lesh has unleashed a debut sure to be embraced by rock fans of all ages. With longtime Dead lyricist Robert Hunter kicking in quite a few contributions, an optimistic mood bubbles over throughout, ranging from "Celebration" (with Haynes playing David Lindley to Lesh's Jackson Browne) to the upbeat stroll "Rock-n-Roll Blues." Haynes' contributions particularly stand out on both of his self-penned contributions; a tragic tale of fame gone awry ("The Real Thing") and an inspirational reaction and tribute to the late Jerry Garcia ("Patchwork Quilt"). Garcia is also represented by a remake of the Dead rarity "Liberty," a rollicking number reminiscent of vintage Little Feat thanks to Haynes's biting slide guitar.

This is a limited edition of "There And Back Again" which includes a bonus disc with 4 tracks.

DISC 1:
01. Celebration 02. Night Of A Thousand Stars 03. The Real Thing 04. Again And Again 05. No More Do I 06. Patchwork Quilt 07. Liberty 08. Midnight Train 09. Leave Me Out Of This 10. Welcome To The Underground 11. Rock-N-Roll Blues

DISC 2 - Limited Edition Bonus CD:

Personnel: Phil Lesh — bass, vocals, Warren Haynes — guitar, vocals, Jimmy Herring — guitar, John Molo — drums and percussion, Rob Barraco — keyboards, vocals and Michael Kang — violin on "Rock-n-Roll Blues".

JENNIFER KNAPP

Jennifer Lynn Knapp is an American-Australian folk rock, and formerly contemporary Christian musician. She is best known for her first single "Undo Me" from her debut album Kansas (1998), and the song "A Little More" from her Grammy Award-nominated album Lay It Down (2000). The Way I Am (2001), was also nominated for a Grammy. In total, the three albums have sold approximately 1 million copies. After taking a 7-year hiatus, Knapp announced in September 2009 that she was returning to music. On May 11, 2010 she released her newest album Letting Go with the single "Dive In". The album debuted at No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. - wikipedia

1998 - Kansas
"Kansas", the first Gotee Records release from singer/songwriter Jennifer Knapp, is an album rarely paralleled in the gospel genre. The edgy yet vulnerable folk-rock and alternative CCM mix serve to create a guitar-driven, almost gritty sound, resulting in comparisons between Knapp and fellow Lillith Fair performers Sheryl Crow and Melissa Etheridge. The project is framed by the a cappella melody "Faithful to Me," which both opens and closes the album. "Undo Me" and "Romans" are clothed in highly rhythmic, acoustic guitar rock, with "Romans" being the more upbeat, less intense of the two. The project's highlight is the song "Hold Me Now." The track, a lyrical parable of sorts, is as close as Knapp comes to a gentle, acoustic ballad. - allmusic.com
TRACKS:
01. Prelude (Faithful To Me) 02. Whole Again 03. Undo Me 04. Trinity 05. In The Name 06. His Grace Is Sufficient 07. Martyrs & Thieves 08. Romans 09. Refine Me 10. Hold Me Now 11. Visions 12. Faithful To Me (Reprise)

2000 - Lay It Down
Emotionally and dynamically no contemporary Christian woman does it like Jennifer Knapp. On her second release Lay It Down, Knapp shows the kind of artistic growth expected from a seasoned veteran. One minute it's Carole King in a coffe shop courtesy of "A Little More," The next you're tapping your toe to a snappy Sheryl Crow vibe on "Lay It Down." This disc is rich in texture and lyrically passionate. Knapp has always recognized her own inadequacies, ala her first hit "Undo Me." This time around the tune "Into Me," serves up another humble lyrical reflection. "I wanna know you, better then I do, relieve me from myself, bring me into you..." One of the discs most interesting and memorable tunes was written by Shawn Colvin, a ditty called "Diamond In The Rough." The song builds to a climatic peak with dc Talks guitarist Mark Townsend riffing his acoustic as though he were Allman Brother Dicky Betts. Lay It Down, is a triumph for Jennifer Knapp, she wears the hat of a multi-talented lyricist, songwriter, and vocalist very well. - allmusic.com

01. A Little More 02. Lay It Down 03. Usher Me Down 04. Into You 05. All Consuming Fire 06. You Answer Me 07. You Remain 08. Diamond In The Rough 09. When Nothing Satisfies 10. Peace

DONNA HOPKINS thumbup

Donna Hopkins was only 14, growing up in Arab (pronounced AIR-rab), Alabama, when she began sneaking out of the house to play guitar in bars in nearby Huntsville and Muscle Shoals. It wasn't long before Donna left home for good, relocating to Birmingham and later to Nashville. She then spent eight years on the road, for much of that time traveling in the Dakotas, Montana and in Las Vegas, before settling in Atlanta 14 years ago. If age 14 seems a bit young to make a commitment to a career and a lifestyle, consider that Donna, whose blues band performs all over, has music in her blood, dating back three generations. "My great grandfather, my grandfather and my mother were all musicians," Donna recalls. "My grandfather, Tip Barbee, played bluegrass and blues kind of stuff. I remember going to hear him play on Saturday nights." Donna also remembers her mother playing guitar and organ, back in the late '60s and early '70s, clad in mini skirt and go-go boots.

Donna hasn't forgotten her musical roots. She's released a solo album titled Free To Go ("the one I've been waiting for," she says), and her grandfather, who still lives in Alabama, plays on one cut. Donna also is keeping up the family tradition, reporting with no small measure of pride that her 6-year-old daughter, India, is a budding singer and actress who won a scholarship to an acting school. India also makes an appearance on Donna's album, sharing vocals with her mom on "Everything Money Can't Buy," a cut selected by Atlanta Magazine for the first annual Atlanta Artist compilation CD. Donna has continued her own tradition of gigs and travel. She also appears frequently around the Southeast with the Women of Rock, an acoustic songwriter-in-the-round performance that also features Caroline Aiken and Diane Durrette.

BILL WYMAN'S RHYTHM KINGS - Live Communication (2011) thumbup

His “walking” style of bass playing was inspired by bluesman Willie Dixon. He has produced records, TV and film scores, and has written several books about his own life, with the Stones and as a photojournalist, including his 1990 biography, 'Stone Alone', and 2002's 'Rolling with the Stones'. He is also a restaurateur and professional photographer who has had his work showcased internationally, and has even patented a metal detector, which allows him to unearth ancient relics in his native England. With a CV, which includes being bassist of the Rolling Stones, for several decades, Bill Wyman could have cemented his place in rock and roll history, but he went on to form the industrious Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings.

Their newest release, recorded live, hence the name, 'Live Communication' features an outstanding group of musicians. The line-up includes guitarist Albert Lee, vocalists (Dr. Hook) Dennis Locorriere and Beverley Skeete, pianist/accordionist Geraint Watkins, Graham Broad on drums, and Nick Payn and Frank Mead on sax. The 13-track CD pulls from a variety of genres: blues, boogies, rock, rockabilly, swing, as well as from a pool of acclaimed songwriters: Willie Dixon, Carole King, Ashford/Simpson, Lieber/Stoller, Joe Tex and even Chuck Berry. But it is the extreme sophistication, yet earthiness, that exudes from this recording that makes it outstanding. - pennyblackmusic.co.uk

GRACE SLICK - SOLO DISCOGRAPHY

Grace Slick is an American singer, songwriter, and former model, well known as one of the lead singers of the rock groups The Great Society, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Starship, as well as for her work as a solo artist, for nearly three decades, from the mid-1960's to the mid-1990's. Slick was an important figure in the 1960's psychedelic rock movement, and is known for her witty lyrics and powerful contralto vocals. - wikipedia

Solo albums:
- Manhole (1973) – US position: # 127
- Dreams (1980) – US position: # 32
- Welcome to the Wrecking Ball! (1981) – US position: # 48
- Software (1984) – US position: # 206

"Manhole" is Grace Slick's first solo album credited solely to her (she had previously recorded Sunfighter with Paul Kantner and Baron von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun with Kantner and David Freiberg, both of whom co-produced Manhole). The album was recorded in 1973, when Jefferson Airplane had stopped touring, and Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady were making the Hot Tuna album, The Phosphorescent Rat. All the members who would form Jefferson Starship in 1974 performed on this album, except for Papa John Creach. The album was conceived as a soundtrack to a movie, (noted by the title of the second track, "Theme from the Movie Manhole"), although there was no such movie made. Grace drew all of the artwork for the album, and wrote on the cover "Child Type Odd Art by Grace." The album only reached #127 on the Billboard charts.
TRACKS:
01. Jay 02. Theme From The Movie Manhole 03. Come Again Toucan 04. It's Only Music 05. Better Lying Down 06. Epic (#38)

"Dreams" is Grace Slick's 1980 album. The album was recorded in NYC without any previous or current members of Jefferson Starship. Steve Price of Pablo Cruise plays drums on "Garden of Man." One single, "Seasons", was released in the States to promote the album. In the United Kingdom the track "Dreams" was lifted as a single. The album itself rose to #32 on the Billboard charts. It also reached #28 in the UK album Chart.
TRACKS:
01. Dreams 02. El Diablo 03. Face To The Wind 04. Angel Of Night 05. Seasons 06. Do It The Hard Way 07. Full Moon Man 08. Let It Go 09. Garden Of Man

"Welcome to the Wrecking Ball!" is Grace Slick's 1981 follow-up to her solo album Dreams (1980). Her third solo album, it was released before stepping back into her old position in Jefferson Starship. The lyrics of the first track include numerous references to Slick's dislike of rock journalists and critics. The songs Slick wrote for side-B of the album are closer in style to the psychedelic songs of Jefferson Airplane than to the songs on the previous album Dreams, and the song "No More Heroes" contains vocal overlays and tape effects speeding up and slowing down the song. The album rose to #48 on the Billboard charts.
TRACKS:
01. Wrecking Ball 02. Mistreater 03. Shot In The Dark 04. Round & Round 05. Shooting Star 06. Just A Little Love 07. Sea Of Love 08. Lines 09. Right Kind 10. No More Heroes

"Software" is Grace Slick's 1984 album. This album was recorded after she had re-joined Jefferson Starship. After working on this album, Peter Wolf would go on to contribute to Jefferson Starship's 1984 album, Nuclear Furniture.
TRACKS:
01. Call It Right Call It Wrong 02. Me And Me 03. All The Machines 04. Fox Face 05. Through The Window 06. It Just Won't Stop 07. Habits 08. Rearrange My Face 09. Bikini Atoll

WHITNEY HOUSTON - The Ultimate Collection (2007)

Whitney Houston was an American singer, actress, producer, and model. Houston was the most awarded female act of all time, according to Guinness World Records. Her list of awards includes 2 Emmy Awards, 6 Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010. Houston was also one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide. Inspired by prominent soul singers in her family, including her mother Cissy Houston, cousins Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, and her godmother Aretha Franklin, Houston began singing with New Jersey church's junior gospel choir at age 11. After she began performing alongside her mother in night clubs in the New York City area, she was discovered by Arista Records label head Clive Davis. Houston released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification.

On February 11, 2012, Houston was found dead in her guest room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California, of causes not immediately known.

2007 UK single-disc collection from the R&B and Pop vocalist, one of the biggest, and best-selling, female artists of all time. She's broken countless records throughout her career, has had consistent success in music and in film, since her debut single "Saving All My Love For You" in 1985. Her music combined big adult ballads with stylish pop and slick contemporary urban soul and her voice is a benchmark that has not since been equaled. This 18 track compilation features her absolute best hits including 'I Will Always Love You', 'Greatest Love Of All', 'Exhale (Shoop Shoop)', 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody', 'Saving All My Love For You' and many more. The previous Greatest Hits collection was a two CD set that featured remixes and more, but this single-disc collection offers the cream of the crop! - amazon.com

JACKIE GREENE

Jackie Greene is an American singer-songwriter and musician. Discovered at an open mike when Dig Music's owner happened to be there, singer/songwriter Jackie Greene is a captivating performer who works well in simple, sparse environments. Signing to the label almost immediately, the California native worked countless clubs and bars before his discovery, a fact made more interesting when it's considered that he was a teenager during that time. A multi-instrumentalist, Greene played most of the instruments on his debut record, Gone Wanderin'. A soulful bit of roots music, the album brought him to a national audience and sprung him into a college tour during the fall of 2002. Rusty Nails, a collection of material from 2001, was released by Dig Records in 2003, followed by the live-in-the-studio DVD video =Broken Hearts Dusty Roads in 2004. Sweet Somewhere Bound appeared on Dig later that same year, and was licensed to Verve Records, which reissued it in 2005. His first proper album for Verve, American Myth, appeared in 2006. In 2008, Greene released Giving Up the Ghost, his first album for 429 Records. The pop-infused but still heartfelt Till the Light Comes followed in 2010.

2008 - Giving Up The Ghost
Aptly described by the New York Times as the "Prince of Americana" for the extraordinary breadth and variety of his talents in performing, arranging, and songwriting, Jackie Greene delivered another ace addition to his catalog with 2008's "Giving Up The Ghost", his fifth full-length and 429 Records debut. Between the stomping "Follow You" and the hauntingly restrained "Prayer for Spanish Harlem," there appears to be very little Greene cannot do with a guitar and a few chords.
TRACKS:
01. Shaken 02. Animal 03. I Don't Live In A Dream 04. Like A Ball & Chain 05. Uphill Mountain 06. Don't Let The Devil Take Your Mind 07. Prayer For Spanish Harlem 08. Downhearted 09. Follow You 10. Another Love Gone Bad 11. When You Return 12. Ghosts of Promised Lands

2010 - Till The Light Comes
Back from his most extensive tour to date, hitting up all the festivals, Jackie Greene delivers another gem proving his title 'Prince of Americana' more relevant than ever. Jackie steps out with maturity and soul on this incredible journey of song confirming that 'Mr. Next Big Thing'...is here, and now! Says Ben Fong Torres, of Rolling Stone Magazine fame '.........Jackie is a sensational rocker.......not to be missed'. - amazon.com

BEKI HEMINGWAY & JONATHAN RUNDMAN - Tennesota (2004)

The word Tennesota is a geographic contraction, an intersection of two states that don’t border each other. It sounds and looks like a term used before, but yet seems foreign or new. It’s also the title of the soon-to-be-released duo-debut CD by songwriters Beki Hemingway and Jonathan Rundman, and it’s a cleverly appropriate moniker for this richly textured Americana album. Beki Hemingway brings the Tennessee half to the mix, with the newest chapter of her career set in Nashville. The Minnesota remainder is represented by Jonathan Rundman of Minneapolis. These new songs retain the flavor of the towns of their origin, with Hemingway’s breathtaking vocals and lovely, melancholy melodies recalling Music City’s country fringe (Emmylou Harris, Buddy & Julie Miller, etc.) and Rundman’s heartland harmonies and garagey instrumentation echoing his Twin Cities forefathers (Jayhawks, Paul Westerberg, etc.). The blend is tailor made, and even carries hints of the duo’s other less-expected musical commonalities like ‘80s New Wave and traditional church hymnody. - amazon.com

TRACKS:
01. You Never Last Where You Land 02. Alone In A New City 03. Hometown 04. Easy Chair 05. List Of Things To Do 06. Everything To Everyone 07. No Regrets 08. Mary's Song 09. Vacancy Sign 10. Forgiveness Waltz 11. Consolation Prize

BEKI HEMINGWAY

Beki Hemingway is a singer/songwriter based first and currently in Denver, with stops in Chicago, Nashville, & Glasgow along the way. Her long & varied career has found her playing in several bands, as well as singing live and studio backup vocals on everything from industrial to inspirational music. She has released 5 CDs on Salt Lady Records, performed all over the US, in Ireland, Scotland, & Germany, and opened for such acts as Shawn Colvin, Aimee Mann, and Pierce Pettis. After a few years' break from the road, Beki is writing for a new CD and beginning to fill the calendar with live performances with guitarist/producer husband Randy Kerkman.

1999 - Too Much Plenty
For many years Chicago-based Beki Hemingway was involved in a string of underground bands, most recently the popular rockabilly group This Train, who toured with Rich Mullins. Now with her first solo LP, Beki finds her own sound, which she describes as "alterna-folkpoprock." Peppy electric guitars combine with full bass and drums to form a backdrop for melodically-charged vocals that are sometimes pop, sometimes edgy, and sometimes sweet. The fun and honest lyrics cover some nostalgic ground, discussing childhood memories and growing up, as well as relationships and faith.

2002 - Words For Loss For Words
Beki Hemingway spent two years grieving her fathers death, and the experience left her with an albums-worth of honest, moving, poetic songs concerning the surprising Presence of God in times of loss and brokenness. Words For Loss of Words is the perfectly realized folk-rock memento of those songs.

RINGO STARR - Ringo 2012 (2012)

"Ringo 2012" is the fabulous sound of a man you know and love working in the groove of a lifetime and making an album with nine songs that vividly reflect his life yesterday and today. "This album is me doing what I do here and now," says Ringo, "and nobody's more qualified to do that than I am!" In fact, one of the only things that didn't come easy for Ringo Starr making Ringo 2012 was the title. Ringo 2012 cannot help but recall the title of another classic album by Starr, 1973's Ringo -- in fact, Ringo 2012 features a startlingly new and improved version of "Step Lightly' from the massively successful Ringo, as well as "Wings" from 1978's Ringo The 4th.

Ringo Starr's 17th solo studio record, titled simply "Ringo 2012" and produced by Ringo, it was recorded in LA and mixed in England by Ringo and Bruce Sugar, and features 9 songs. Of the 9 tracks two are covers, "Think It Over," and "Rock Island Line" and two are new versions of his own songs, "Wings" and "Step Lightly." Joining Ringo in the studio for Ringo 2012 were musicians (in alphabetical order): Michael Bradford, Ann Marie Calhoun, Matt Cartsonis, Steve Dudas, Charlie Haden, Amy Keys, Kelly Moneymaker, Richard Page, Van Dyke parks, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Dave Stewart, Bruce Sugar, Benmont Tench, Joe Walsh , Don Was, Edgar Winter.

TRACKS:

V.A. - Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan (2012)

Designed as a celebration for Amnesty International's 50th Anniversary, Chimes of Freedom is the mother of all tribute albums: a four-disc salute to Bob Dylan that runs some 76 songs performed by singers from all corners of the globe. Apart from Lennon/McCartney - the former of which was the subject of producers Jeff Ayeroff and Julie Yannatta's previous 2007 collection Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur - no other songwriter of the rock & roll era could attract so many different artists from so many different genres as Dylan, something that is a testament to the resilience of his catalog. From the very start of his career, Dylan saw his songs covered by all manners of artists, ranging from colleagues and peers to longhair rock bands, easy listening outfits, and weirdos like William Shatner, so the absurd abundance of Chimes of Freedom in a way fits into the grand pattern of history: his songs were always up for grabs, they've survived terrible misguided covers, they've been performed with loving faith, they've been reinvented once and again. Given its monumental length, it should be of no great surprise that Chimes of Freedom has songs that fall into each category, although it is surprisingly bereft of awfulness. Not even Miley Cyrus' painful-in-theory straight-ahead cover of "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" is awful: she may not know who Verlaine and Rimbaud are, but she focuses on the melody and winds up selling the song in the process. Most of the artists here perform a similar trick, choosing love songs over protests, keeping things intimate instead of anthemic. Naturally, there are exceptions to the rule, but the scales on Chimes of Freedom are tipped toward pretty stripped-down sincerity - even Ke$ha abandons Auto-Tune for a nearly a cappella interpretation of "Don't Think Twice It's Alright" - an aesthetic that's easy to digest and helps make the artists that do something different pop out dramatically: Flogging Molly's Pogues-ian run through "The Times They Are A-Changing," Bryan Ferry's eerie reading of "Bob Dylan's Dream," Elvis Costello adding spikes to "License to Kill," Sinéad O'Connor tearing up "Property of Jesus," and Queens of the Stone Age tapping into Bob's rowdy side with a tremendous "Outlaw Blues." After a parade of faithful salutes ranging from Billy Bragg's impassioned "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" to Lenny Kravitz's absurd re-creation of "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35," it's great to hear actual re-interpretations of Dylan's songs - after all, even Bob himself doesn't always sing the same song the same way twice - cduniverse.com

TAYLOR BARTON - Thoroughbred (1997)

Chances are you have heard, met, or worked with Taylor Barton: a smart, multi-talented, singer-songwriter, actress, writer, playwright, poet, dancer, and film producer. She has spent over three decades traversing the arts and culminated into a 21st century Renaissance woman. Born in Baltimore, Maryland she started her musical training with piano lessons at age six. She enrolled in the Peabody Institute at age thirteen where she studied dance until her high school graduation. Music and lyrics were always her passion and while frequenting the local bars in Fells Point, she was inspired by her hometown heroes, Tom Waits, Lowell George, and John Waters.

Former 'Generic Blondes' lead singer Taylor Barton steps out on her own with 'Thoroughbred'. Her new setting leaves plenty of room for Barton's unaffected vocal, style, her sharp compassionate lyrics, and her ability to slip into rockers, mid-tempos, and ballads.

NANCI GRIFFITH - From A Distance: The Very Best Of Nanci Griffith (2002)

Well, the title is misleading, as this collection showcases only her MCA era; a more accurate designation would be From a Distance: The Best Stuff Nanci Griffith Did After She Left Philo and Before She Went to Elektra, but maybe that's not catchy enough. What is compelling is the music itself. During the period of 1987 to 1991, Griffith wrote some of her best material. She also discovered Julie Gold's classic title song, but found herself floundering commercially in her transition from folkabilly queen to arch chanteuse. Griffith's Philo records are still the most memorable--loose and full of Texas ranginess and sawdust memories. But this compilation is surprisingly satisfying, as it ends just before she began to take herself too seriously. You can hear a tinkling banjo driving "Lone Star State of Mind" and a pedal steel guitar as hillbilly as the Grand Ole Opry on "Ford Econoline." Her little-girl voice modulates to fetching reediness when necessary and even dips into deep Texas in the spoken intros to several live performances. But what stands out is the overall quality of the writing, which turns stunning on the wistful "Gulf Coast Highway" and on "Trouble in the Fields." If the reason for Griffith's status as a cult artist has eluded you, this anthology should go a long way toward clearing up the mystery. - amazon.com

"From A Distance: The Very Best Of Nanci Griffith" is a compilation album that draws from the four studio albums, and one live album that Nanci Griffith recorded on the MCA label between the years 1987 and 1991. All tracks have been digitally remastered.

RODRIGO Y GABRIELA AND C.U.B.A. - Area 52 (2012)

ATO Records is excited to announce the release of the new studio album by Rodrigo y Gabriela. Entitled Area 52, the record was produced by the legendary Peter Asher and will come out on January 24, 2012. Area 52 contains nine of Rod and Gab's favorite songs from their own catalogue re-arranged and re-configured for a 13-piece Cuban orchestra comprised of some of Havana's finest young players, collectively known as C.U.B.A. This two-disc set includes a 30-minute 'making-of' documentary on DVD. Area 52 was mixed by Rafa Sardina, one of the leading studio musicians in the Latin music world, and arranged by London-based pianist, composer and arranger Alex Wilson. Recording took place in the Miramar district of Havana, Cuba, at Abdala Studios, founded by the Cuban folk hero Silvio Rodriguez, as well as at Rod and Gab s studio in Ixtapa, Mexico. Other players on the record include: bassist Carles Benavent (Paco De Lucia, Chick Corea, Miles Davis), drummer John Tempesta (The Cult, Testament, White Zombie), sitarist Anoushka Shankar and drummer Samuel Formell (Los Van Van). With career sales in excess of 1.2 million albums, blockbuster movie scores, sell out world tours that span London to Los Angeles, Paris to Tokyo and Dublin to Sydney, and not forgetting the love and respect of fellow musicians like Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, Al Di Meola and L Shankar, Rodrigo y Gabriela have worked hard to reach Area 52. - amazon.com

STEAMHAMMER

Blues-rockers Steamhammer formed in 1968 in the British town of Worthing. The band was made up of several blues and folk band veterans who were interested in playing something new. The band was pulled onto the road almost directly after their inception by blues legend Freddie King, who needed a backing band for his European tour. By spring of the next year, they signed a contract with CBS Records and released an eponymous debut. They mixed their own material with several standards, but failed to find an audience in the over-saturated blues-rock scene. The band did become quite the live sensation, despite a lineup shift that saw original members Michael Rushton and Martin Quittenton leave the band. Their second album was another stab at the same formula, with slightly different results due to new saxophonist Steve Jollife's incredible technical skill. By the time 1970 rolled around, they recorded their "definitive" album, the critical favorite Mountains. This album gave them some minor mainstream exposure, and revealed a band who was ready to adopt the rock side of their sound much more than before. They toured afterward, but lost most of the band members throughout the journey. By the time it was over, they only had original guitarist Martin Pugh and drummer Mick Bradley in the fold. They released one more album, 1972's Speech, to poor reviews and an indifferent public. The band broke up before they could even promote the album, and Bradley died the same year of leukemia. The band never attempted to reunite, but many of the members would go on to work with each other in projects like Armageddon. - answers.com

1969 - Steamhammer (Reflection)
Steamhammer’s debut album based out of Worthing, England, was formative to the band’s success. The album featured two numbers that have remained the group’s trademarks throughout all musical and personnel changes: “Junior’s Wailing,” a blistering 12-bar blues number, with a basic riff recognizable from Brighton to Berlin, and the upbeat, “When Your Friends Have Gone”.
TRACKS:
01. Water (Part 1) 02. Junior's Wailing 03. Lost You Too 04. She Is The Fire 05. You'll Never Know 06. Even The Clock 07. Down The Highway 08. On Your Road 09. Twenty Four Hours 10. When All Your Friends Are Gone 11. Water (Part 2)

1969 - MK II
Steamhammer’s second album produced in 1969, highlights the melodic and exciting “Supposed To Be Free,” which speaks for itself, being sandwiched between “Santana” and “Chicago” on CBS’s “Fill Your Head With Rock” album.
TRACKS: 01. Supposed To Be Free 02. Johnny Carl Morton 03. Sunset Chase 04. Contemporary Chick Con Song 05. Turn Around 06. 6/8 For Amiran 07. Passing Through 08. Down Along The Grove 09. Another Travelling Tune 10. Fran And Dee Take A Ride 11. Juniors Wailing (Single Version) 12. Windmill 13. Autumn Song 14. Blues For Passing People

1970 - Mountains
Steamhammer’s third album, features live recordings at the Lyceum in London, spotlighting the band’s signature ‘body’ music, with “Riding On the L&N” and “Walking Down the Road”, proving the quote: “Steamhammer is one of those rare groups who sound better live than on record.” The centerpiece of this album is a 14-minute live treatment of “Riding On the L&N/Hold That Train”.
TRACKS: 01. I Wouldn't Have Thought 02. Riding On The L And N 03. Hold That Train 04. Levinia 05. Henry Lane 06. Leader Of The Ring 07. Walking Down The Road 08. Mountains

1972 - Speech
"Speech", the band’s fourth and final album, produced by ex-Yardbird and Renaissance frontman Keith Relf, is the first to feature bassist Louis Cennamo, and was hailed once again for its enormous “live” sound quality.
TRACKS: 01. Penumbra 02. Telegram 03. For Against

PAUL McCARTNEY - Kisses On The Bottom (2012)

Kisses On The Bottom is a collection of standards Paul grew up listening to in his childhood as well as the two new McCartney compositions "My Valentine" and "Only Our Hearts." With the help of Grammy Award-winning producer Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and her band--as well as guest appearances from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, McCartney's new album is a deeply personal journey through classic American compositions that, in some cases, a young Paul first heard his father perform on piano at home. The full track listing reveals that Paul has been both reverent and adventurous in his song choices. The phrase `Kisses On The Bottom,' comes from the album's opener `I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter'. Originally made a big hit by Fats Waller in 1935, the song opens with the lines "I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter and make believe it came from you. I'm gonna write words oh so sweet. They're gonna knock me off of my feet. A lot of kisses on the bottom, I'll be glad I got `em."

As authentic and daring a musical statement as he could make, this is the album Paul has been thinking about making for more than 20 years - and probably the last thing his fans are expecting. "In the end it was 'Look, if I don't do it now, I'll never do it'," he says. In short, Paul believes it is about time "the songs me and John based quite a few of our things on" received the recognition they deserve. Moreover, the record also features a couple of new original McCartney compositions in the spirit of those classics. - amazon.com

01. I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter 02. Home (When Shadows Fall) 03. It's Only a Paper Moon 04. More I Cannot Wish You 05. The Glory Of Love 06. We Three (My Echo, My Shadow And Me) 07. Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive 08. My Valentine 09. Always 10. My Very Good Friend Ahe Milkman 11. Bye Bye Blackbird 12. Get Yourself Another Fool 13. The Inch Worm 14. Only Our Hearts 15. Baby's Request 16. My One And Only Love

LAUREN ELLIS

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Lauren Ellis has a rich background as a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter, especially known for her soulful expressions on slide guitar. Moving to Los Angeles, she found road work as guitarist with Rita Coolidge and Nell Carter, backed up legendary R&B duo Don and Dewey, and toured extensively stateside and overseas. In Los Angeles she wrote and recorded her first independent release: the critically acclaimed Push the River.

Lauren was the winner of the 1999 Los Angeles Music Award in the category of Outstanding Guitarist, and was the only woman asked to audition for the post-Garcia version of the Grateful Dead: "The Other Ones". She has opened shows for Bonnie Raitt, Patti Griffin, Etta James and many others, and recent festival appearances include opening slots with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimmy Thackery, John Mayall, Marty Stuart, and The Kentucky Headhunters. After relocating to Nashville, Tennessee, she began work on her second record, Feels Like Family. featuring stellar players like Tony Joe White, Viktor Krauss, Dean Parks and Kenny Malone, the CD has been received with rave reviews.

Listen for the songs on Feels like Family during MTV's reality shows The Real World, Road Rules, and Extreme Challenge. Lauren's searing slide guitar can also be heard on the theme for CMT's pop-meets-country series Crossroads, where she also shares composing credits. Lauren splits her time between Nashville and the Northeastern Florida coast, and she and the band are preparing to record her third independent release. When she isn't writing, recording, or performing, Lauren's other passion is the restoration and repair of guitars and other stringed instruments. On her first self-produced CD Push The River, Lauren showcases her skills on acoustic and electric guitars, Dobro, lap steel, and even electric sitar, but perhaps most impressive are the songs... heartfelt, memorable, and hook-laden, with strong lyrics and a vocal style that is honest, hopeful, and defiantly real. She is accompanied on the album by friends Roy Bittan on keyboards (Bruce Springsteen's "E" Street Band, and producer for Lucinda Williams), session guitar wizard Dean Parks (Lyle Lovett, Steely Dan, co-writer of Push the River's "Real Love"), Neil Stubenhaus on bass (Quincy Jones, Eric Clapton), and Herman Matthews on drums (Tower of Power, Meredith Brooks). - .laurenellis.com

AUDREY AULD

Singer/songwriter Audrey Auld Mezera was born Audrey Auld in Australia and raised in the bush in Tasmania, without television or radio. She studied dancing and took up the classical violin in a musical family; her father played jazz piano, and her stepfather had a jazz band. As a pre-adolescent, she moved to town and became immersed in the popular music of the 1970s, listening to punk rock in her teens. Living in Sydney, she began studying acting, soon moving into video and film work, and she spent six years as an animator. Then she moved out of the city and began performing country music. She returned to Sydney, but continued to perform, working in an a cappella group led by Tony Backhouse. Then she formed her own vocal group, the Cowbelles, and later performed in such bands as the Harmony Grits and Audrey & the Rhythm Wranglers.

Looking for a producer to work with her as a solo singer/songwriter, she met Bill Chambers of the Dead Ringer Band (the father of Kasey Chambers), and with him made a four-song EP released in 1997. This was followed by Looking Back to See, an album of traditional country duets, released on their own label, Reckless Records, in 1998 and credited to Bill & Audrey. Next, Mezera wrote and recorded a solo album, The Fallen, in 2000. When it found American distribution, she toured the U.S. in 2001. She released her second solo album, Losing Faith, in 2003. The same year, she married and relocated to America, settling in the town of Bolinas in northern California. In 2004, she released a live album, Texas. This was the first album on which she employed her married name of Audrey Auld Mezera. In December 2005, she played a concert with guitarist Nina Gerber that was recorded for a double-CD live album, In the House, released in May 2006. Her third solo studio album, Lost Men and Angry Girls, was released in February 2007.

THE WHO - Thirty Years Of Maximum R&B (1994)

This exemplary four-disc box takes the high road, attempting nothing less than an honest reconstruction of the Who's stormy, adventurous, uneven pilgrimage. While offering an evenhanded cross-section of single hits and classic album tracks, 30 Years garnishes the expected high points with B-sides, alternate and live versions of familiar tracks, and the quartet's earliest singles as the High Numbers. Reinforcing the package's documentary agenda are interview and stage-patter sound bites. What emerges is a fascinating chronicle of how the Shepherd's Bush mods journeyed from the giddy, explosive concision of their January 1965 debut single, "I Can't Explain," to the discursive, knotty sweep of creative architect Pete Townshend's "rock operas," Tommy, Quadrophenia, and the uncompleted, unreleased Lifehouse. The Who's swift evolution into rock visionaries is traced chronologically, meaning the band's original immersion in "maximum R&B," which forged their earliest club dates, doesn't surface on record until midway through the sequence, on key tracks from their thundering Live at Leeds album. Fans may quibble over the relative weight given specific albums, but the shape of the Who's career and their passionate identification with their audience are rendered faithfully. So, too, is Townshend's skill at mingling issues of faith and identity with generational manifestoes and sly broadsides. And there's ample evidence of the quartet's outsize musical power; the sheer volume and violence that earned them notoriety early on is matched by a lyricism that deepens by mid career. Given the candor of the presentation, it's not surprising that 30 Years reaches its zenith midway through the set or that the last song (a reunion of the surviving trio covering Elton John) can't help seeming anticlimactic. - amazon.com

JOHN MAYALL - Live In London (2011)

John Mayall, “The Godfather of the Blues,” continues to draw audiences to his live shows, including this one, which was recorded at the Leicester Square Theatre in London on November 1, 2010. Anybody who’s a fan will recognize most of the tunes contained in this 2-CD set or on DVD. The one tune that most people consider his signature tune is “Room To Move,” and in this rendition Mayall manages to breathe new life into it. As the liner notes say, it’s a “Room to Move” to remember. You’ll hear new and different scat lyrics in it, plus it’s got a slightly slowed-down tempo, which gives it a totally different (yet still a jumping, mesmerizing) spin. When you consider that Mayall will soon turn 78, it’s all the more amazing what he accomplishes here. Another of Mayall's signature songs in this set is “California,” an anthem to his adopted home. You’ll also recognize “Chicago Line,” “Parchman Farm” and “Early In The Morning.” Mayall’s backing band for this performance includes Rocky Athas on guitar, Greg Rzab on bass, and Jay Davenport on drums.

Over the years, Mayall has introduced an amazing line-up of musicians, mostly guitarists. Marc Almond, Eric Clapton, Aynsley Dunbar, Mick Fleetwood, Hughie Flint, Andy Fraser, Peter Green, Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Jon Hiseman, Harvey Mandel, Jon Mark, John McVie, Coco Montoya, Larry Taylor, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout and Buddy Whittington all got their first taste of fame working with Mayall, and they’ve all gone on to become household names on both sides of the Pond. - blogcritics.org
