THE SHADOWS - Memories: 36 Guitar Mods (2005)

If the first Shadows hits collection was an unimpeachable masterpiece, their second is, if you'll pardon the pun, a mere shadow of its brilliance. Not that there is anything whatsoever amiss with the contents. "Foot Tapper," "Atlantis," "Shindig," and so on were all remarkable hits -- remarkable, that is, not only for their instrumental prowess, but also because they proved the Shadows were still a vibrant concern, long after rock and pop had moved into the middle-age crisis of the mid-1960s. "The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt," "Genie With the Light Brown Lamp," and the admirably raucous "Rhythms and Greens" are all here for hit completists; so is "Mary Anne," the group's first vocal hit and proof that there was life beyond the trademark tang. Indeed, a dozen hits take the band's story up through the release of the mawkish masterpiece "Don't Make My Baby Blue," while two quaintly oddball cuts from the Rhythms and Greens EP complete the set. Even at the band's best, however, little here has more than a passing resonance in comparison with the megaliths of the past. In their prime, a new Shadows single hit you with all the physical and emotional impact of the first date of your dreams. By 1965, they were more like old friends -- you'd pass on the street, swear you'd get together again sometime, then dismiss them from your mind. There's some great music here. But once you've got the first hits collection, do you really need anything more?

The Shadows are easily the most popular and influential British instrumental group of all time. Their career started in the late '50s as Cliff Richard's backing band and they consistently hit the singles charts well into the 80's. Lead guitarist Hank Marvin is cited by many modern pickers as a major influence. Throughout the latter part of their career, they released many instrumental covers and interpretations of classic themes. This 2 disc set brings together many of those recordings Including the two top 10 hits 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' & 'Theme From The Deer Hunter (Cavatina)' & the top 50 hit 'The Third Man'. - cduniverse.com

JULIAN SAS - Bound To Roll (2012)

Bound to Roll , Julian Sas’ eight studio album, is a record that took time to make. More than two-and-a-half years, tells the Dutch blues man, I had tons of ideas and was writing constantly but a lot of that went straight into the bin. ‘Bound to Roll’ is a very personal record. This album is about pleasure, enjoyment, love, loss, pain and sadness. About real life, about the blues, about experiences that, I hope, made me stronger and a better human being. For me making this album was a way of dealing with my emotions. Besides 9 new Sas originals, Bound to Roll also features three covers; Rory Gallagher’s Shadow Play, Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited and Humble Pie’s 30 Days In The Hole (their seventh single and also included on their Smokin’ album) About the choice of these songs Julian explains: ‘Shadow Play’ totally reflects my feelings about the recent period of my life. Especially the text. The song fits perfectly with my own songs. Dylan’s ‘Highway 61 Revisited’, is just a killer song, the groove, the lyric – everybody needs to get rid of something on Highway 61, personal or other. This is also the track that made me fall in love with playing slide. ‘30 Days In The Hole’; Steve Marriott is one of my favourite singers and writers. This song I wanted to record because of the aggression of the riff, a lot of anger, one of the greatest rock-riffs ever. All great songs to play! - cavalier-musicmanagement.com

UFO - Too Hot To Handle: The Very Best Of UFO (2012)

There are even more stories about UFO than they’ve composed songs. Any band who have been in the music business for more than 40 years are bound to have experienced difficult times, but also dazzling successes and spectacular events. UFO’s success story began in London way back in 1969, when vocalist Phil Mogg, drummer Andy Parker, guitarist Mick Bolton and bassist Pete Way formed the group. Even in the seventies, the band distinguished themselves with their very own, unmistakable style, touching a nerve among their growing following with rock numbers like ‘Prince Kajuku’, ‘Follow You Home’ or ‘C’mon Everybody’ from their albums UFO 1, Flying and UFO Live. The global breakthrough arrived when German guitarist, Michael Schenker, joined the fold in 1973, having left his band Scorpions to follow an offer by Phil Mogg and Pete Way. UFO released three consecutive rock classics with Schenker - Phenomenon (1974), Force It (1975) and No Heavy Pettin’ (1976) - featuring classics like ‘Doctor Doctor’, ‘Shoot, Shoot’, and ‘Rock Bottom’. Following the arrival of keyboarder/rhythm guitarist Paul Raymond, UFO released their two studio albums Lights Out (1977) and Obsession (1978), including the hit singles ‘Too Hot To Handle’, ‘Lights Out’ and ‘Only You Can Rock Me’. Their live cut Strangers In The Night came out in 1979 and is referred to by the press to this day as one of the best live releases of all time, while also signalling the end of the Mogg, Way, Schenker, Parker & Raymond line-up.

2012 two CD collection from the veteran British rockers. UFO remain a pivotal band who have endured for four decades, since their formation in 1969 and have outlasted some of their contemporaries. This collection charts their rise, from the heyday of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal in the early-to-mid-70s, to the era of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal and beyond, capturing the band who went on to influence everyone from Iron Maiden to Metallica. - amazon.com

IF

If was Great Britain's contribution to the jazz-rock movement begun and popularized in the late '60s/early '70s by Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago. Formed in 1969 by Melody Maker jazz poll winners Dave Quincy, Dick Morrissey, and Terry Smith, the band never found popular success in the United States. However, If produced several albums noteworthy for placing jazz players in a pop/rock band context and producing a true fusion of the two genres without diluting the players' improvisational skills. Unlike most of their horn-band contemporaries, If had no brass players in the band, relying solely on the saxophones of Dick Morrissey and the flute and saxophones of Dave Quincy. But what really gave If its unique sound were the vocals of J.W. Hodgkinson and the guitar of Terry Smith. Hodgkinson's vocal timbre was unusual -- smooth, flexible, and strong in the high end, sounding like no other vocalist. Smith's trebly guitar sound was also unique, combining a rocker's use of sustain with the jazz fluency of Wes Montgomery and Django Reinhardt. The original incarnation of If produced five excellent albums between 1970 and 1972, but these albums failed to find an audience. Morrissey soldiered on with the If name for two more albums with a totally different lineup and a more rock-type sound, but these, too, went nowhere. Drummer Dennis Elliott was later a member of the platinum-selling rock band Foreigner. - allmusic.com

LEONARD COHEN – Old Ideas (2012)

From our master singer-songwriter, Leonard Cohen, here are ten new songs that mine the heart, shake the body and break the boundaries as everybody knows only Leonard can do. A signature of our time, Leonard's baritone holds us like the voices of Hank, Frank and Ray. These are songs that nobody knows and everyone will treasure. Fans were given a hint of what to expect when Cohen made remarks as the recipient of the Principe de Asturias Prize for literature in Spain in October 2011.

"As I grew older, I understood that instructions came with this voice. And the instructions were these...Never to lament casually. And if one is to express the great inevitable defeat that awaits us all, it must be done within the strict confines of dignity & beauty."

The album was produced with Patrick Leonard, Anjani Thomas, Ed Sanders and Dino Soldo. Complementing Cohen's signature baritone on Old Ideas are the exceptional vocalists Dana Glover, Sharon Robinson, The Webb Sisters (Hattie and Charley Webb) and Jennifer Warnes. The album's cover design and drawings are Cohen's own. - amazon.com

JOHN SCOFIELD - Piety Street (2009)

It is a rare artist that can explore more than one kind of music with true fluency, virtuosity and sincerity. Guitarist John Scofield can, and he s proven it once again with Piety Street - a powerful collection of Gospel renditions. Playing with John on this recording: Born in Kent, England in 1964, Jon Cleary is known for his salty-sweet voice, masterful piano/ organ skills. GRAVY TRAIN - Staircase To The Day (1974)

"Staircase to the Day" is Gravy Train's swansong from 1974, a marvellous piece of high quality UK melodic progressive rock. Incorporating classical and folk imagery it comes complete with a Roger Dean gatefold cover. This album has that early 70's British feel common to rock bands that were (at the time) reaching out for something new and were given the freedom by the record companies to see where the pursuit led. Compared to their earlier releases, Gravy Train was really over-acheiving on this album. Their previous recordings suffered from spotty musicianship (especially the wind instrument playing, which is unlistenable on those efforts!), and the songs did not really work. Staircase to the Day functions as a tribute to the synergistic power of the collective band mind when it all comes together, if only for a short time, in the studio. Don't bother with their other recordings, but don't let them scare you off of a real diamond in the rough. Listen to the heartfelt vocals and arrangement of "Bring My Life On Back To Me" (looking at the morning after nuclear armegeddon through the eyes of a child), and the rocking wah-guitar on the closing jam "Busted...", and experience that good feeling you get when you take a chance on a recording and are immediately rewarded. - amazon.com

SAM COOKE - The RCA Albums Collection (2011)

The RCA Albums Collection includes these albums (in their Stereo configuarions – no mono) with the original release year next to it:

01. Cooke’s Tour (1960)
02. Hits Of The 50's (1960)
03. Swing Low (1961)
04. My Kind Of Blues (1961)
05. Twistin The Night Away (1962)
06. Mr. Soul (1963)
07. Night Beat (1963)
08. One Night Stand! Sam Cooke Live At The Harlem Square Club (1985, but recorded in January 1963)

"The most complete package to date of Sam Cooke's '60s albums. Six of the eight albums in this set have never been released on CD in the U.S. Each individual album is packaged in a replica mini-LP sleeve reproducing that album’s original cover art.

Sam Cooke is widely regarded as the first and greatest soul singer, and as one of the most important figures in modern American music. His good looks, personal charisma and golden voice made him a superstar in the 1950s, winning him an unprecedented crossover appeal. Rather than coasting on his commercial success, the multi-talented artist worked to maximize his music's capacity for personal expression and artistic growth. As lead singer of the Soul Stirrers, Cooke was already an established star on the gospel circuit in the mid-'50s, when he made a daring transition into the secular music world. That risky move paid off. Not only was he immensely popular with both black and white audiences; he also appealed to teenagers as well as their parents. But it was after his 1960 move to the RCA label that Cooke truly came into his own as an artist. At RCA, he recorded a historic series of albums that demonstrated the full range of his diverse talents, showing him to be equally at ease with raw R&B, smooth pop, gritty gospel, bluesy ballads and socially-conscious songcraft. Although he died in 1964 at the age of 33, Sam Cooke produced a remarkably accomplished body of work in his short life. This box set celebrates that rich musical legacy, collecting eight of his greatest albums, six of which have never before been released on CD in the United States. This collection charts Sam Cooke's remarkable musical evolution, and stands as a powerful testament to his timeless talent.

THE JEFF HEALEY BAND - Live At Montreux 1999 (2005)

Canada's Jeff Healey burst on the scene in the late '80s with a pair of John Hiatt songs, "Angel Eyes" and "Confidence Man," drawing a good deal of attention for his unique laptop electric guitar style. A turn in the Patrick Swayze movie Roadhouse playing a down-and-dirty version of the Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" also boosted Healey's profile, but although the blind guitarist is obviously a special and gifted player, his style and approach haven't changed one bit since, which is a good thing if you love what he does, but it makes most of his releases after the impressive debut album, See the Light, seem a bit like reruns. This live set recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1999 (two tracks, a cover of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," and the Healey original "That's What They Say," are from a Montreux appearance two years earlier in 1997) likewise features few surprises, although Healey has added a second guitarist (Philip Sayce for the two 1997 cuts and Pat Rush for the 1999 set) to his longtime rhythm section of Joe Rockman on bass and Tom Stephen on drums. Healey's leads on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" amp the song up in all the right places, and he brings out the inherent heaviness in another Beatles tune, John Lennon's "Yer Blues." He breaks a string in the middle of "Roadhouse Blues," which is a bit like watching a NASCAR driver throw a wheel - you don't want to see it happen, but it definitely makes things interesting. A ching version of Robert Johnson's "Stop Breakin' Down" is a clear highlight. In the end, Healey and his band turn out solid, professional blues-rock, the kind of thing you'd expect from a top-notch bar band, and Healey is undeniably exciting as a lead player, but it all seems a bit caught up in a 1980s time warp. It would be nice to hear Healey expand his core sound a little with some soul or funk, say, or maybe go in the other direction and cover the Charley Patton songbook - anything to add some freshness. - allmusic.com

STUFF - Live At Montreux 1976 (2008)

Stuff was a New York-based jazz funk band active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The members were Gordon Edwards (bass), Richard Tee (keyboards), Eric Gale (guitar), Cornell Dupree (guitar), Chris Parker (drums), and later Steve Gadd (drums).

Stuff was a group of session musicians with jazz chops who united under the less-is-more banner of the groove. The result was, in effect, one of the all-time great R&B cover acts through the 1970s. Stuff’s shifting personnel had solidified by the time it played the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1976. On the resulting live DVD and CD, guitarists Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale, keyboardist Richard Tee, bassist Gordon Edwards and drummer Steve Gadd won over a jazz audience by playing instrumental versions of hits by Stevie Wonder, Billy Preston and Earth, Wind & Fire.

MAN DOKI - People In Room #8 (1997)

Hungarian-born Leslie Mándoki (Mándoki László) (born January 7, 1953 in Budapest) is a musician who performed for music group Dschinghis Khan and has since then gone on to a solo performer. Leslie Mandoki studied drums and percussion at the musical conservatory of Budapest in the early 1970s. At the same time he was a band leader for the local jazz-rock group JAM, citing groups like Cream and Jethro Tull as his influence. In July 1975 Leslie Mandoki together with Gabor Csupo and others fled from Hungary to Munich, Germany to avoid prosecution by the communist government for being a member of the student opposition. At first unsuccessful as a solo musical artist, he became a member of the pop band Dschinghis Khan and later with more serious musical work. It was with one of Dschinghis Khan's greatest hits, Moskau, that Leslie became recognized internationally as "that greasy guy in the Moskau video", most likely due to his rough appearance and over-zealous dance movements. This title was recognized only recently, as the stylings of the late 1970's quickly faded and views of Moskau's music video on websites such as YouTube quickly increased. - wikipedia

GRAVY TRAIN - Gravy Train (1970)

Gravy Train were a progressive rock group from Lancashire, England, formed by vocalist and guitarist Norman Barratt in 1969. Together with J.D. Hughes (keyboards, vocals, wind), Lester Williams (bass, vocals) and Barry Davenport (drums) they recorded four studio albums. The first two were released on the Vertigo label, and the latter two by Dawn Records. The band was dissolved in 1975. Little is known what happened with its members except for Barratt, who appeared in Mandalaband for their second and final album in 1978. He went on to found the Barratt Band, which recorded albums in the early 1980s. Les Williams has been working as Ocean Entertainments - an agency for bands and acts - since the 1980s. - wikipedia

Wonderful debut by this British band. Gravy Train isn't exactly the most progressive band out there, this here is more of a hard rock album, a Tull meets Sabbath hybrid, with heavy guitar riffs from Norman Barrett, and Ian Anderson-like flutes from J.D. Hughes.

DELTA SPIRIT

Delta Spirit is a band from San Diego, California. The group combines unconventional instruments such as trash cans lids and orchestral bass drums, multi-instrumentalism and spiritually themed lyrics into a hybrid of rock and northern soul. The group consists of Jon Jameson (bass), Brandon Young (percussion), Matthew Vasquez (vocals/guitars), Kelly Winrich (multi-instrumentals) and Will McLaren (guitar).

The band produced and recorded their debut full-length album, Ode to Sunshine, in a cabin in the San Diego mountains. It was re-released with new artwork (featuring Kelly's uncle Dr. Thomas Payne on the cover) and a new version of the song "Streetwalker" on August 26, 2008, by Rounder Records. The band has made television appearances, both on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in late 2008 and Last Call with Carson Daly on the March 12, 2009, episode. Their second album, History From Below, was released on June 8, 2010. - wikipedia

GUY CLARK - Somedays The Song Writes You (2009)

Guy Clark is an American Texas Country artist. In his career, he has released more than twenty albums, primarily on major labels. He has also written singles for other artists, including Ricky Skaggs, Steve Wariner and Rodney Crowell.

"Somedays The Song Writes You", country elder Guy Clark's 11th studio album, is a crafted collection of compositions that rank among some of his best. Clark's tobacco and whiskey-stained voice has never sounded better than it does on such tracks as "The Guitar," a fiery number about a wayward musician and the pawnshop guitar that causes an unexpected awakening in him, and "Hollywood," a slow-grooving cut that takes a sideways look at the world-famous district of Los Angeles, California. "Somedays The Song Writes You" is another choice album from one of the greatest songwriters to ever come out of the state of Texas. - cduniverse.com

WHITESNAKE - Live In The Shadow Of The Blues (2006)

"If You Want Me," "All I Want Is You," and "Dog," that's obvious from the jump -- but the same was true for hits like "Slide It In" and "Ready & Willing." That said, there is fresh energy here. Aldrich and Beach are monsters, pure and simple. This is a deeply guitar-driven attack, raw and wild and woolly. What remains to be seen is if these cuts can inspire any of the former big hard rock heads to come out of the woodwork in the 21st century. After all, these are the first new studio tracks from Coverdale since 1997! The formula is the same, it's just ramped up and a bit more metallic; perhaps Coverdale feels - as he does his very best Robert Plant here -- that the loud and proud signature will be enough to attract not just the dwindling rolls of the faithful but attack some younger blood as well. The songs are great for what they are (beautifully crafted, supersonic hard rockers); it's just a head-scratcher when considering who might be interested in playing them on the radio or on the telly. The standouts are "If You Want Me" and the stellar power ballad "All I Want Is You" (if young people dug Whitesnake you could see them at gigs swaying and flicking their lighters to this one). The live material is top-notch. All of it. Coverdale sounds inspired and his band just roars like a behemoth. From the really vintage material like "Burn/Stormbringer" to "Is This Love," the band knows it inside out and turns some of it inside out. In many ways, this is as good or better than Live in the Heart of the City. One is not sure what "Blues" Coverdale is referring to in the album title, and it makes no difference. This is a live 'Snake record that kicks it. - cduniverse.com

JOHNNY OTIS SHOW - Cold Shot & Snatch And The Poontangs (2002)

Ioannis Alexandres Veliotes (1921 – 2012), better known as Johnny Otis, was an American singer, musician, talent scout, disc jockey, composer, arranger, recording artist, record producer, vibraphonist, drummer, percussionist, bandleader, impresario and pastor. Born in Vallejo, California, he is commonly referred to as the "Godfather of Rhythm and Blues". In 1969 he recorded an album of sexually explicit material under the name Snatch and the Poontangs. In 1970 he played at the legendary Monterey Jazz Festival with Little Esther Phillips and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. Otis continued performing through the 1990s and headlined the San Francisco Blues Festival in 1990 and 2000, although because of his many other interests he went through long periods where he did not perform. ETTA JAMES - The Definitive Collection (2006)

Etta James, whose powerful, versatile and emotionally direct voice could enliven the raunchiest blues as well as the subtlest love songs, most indelibly in her signature hit, “At Last,” died on Friday morning in Riverside, California. She was 73.

Ms. James was not easy to pigeonhole. She is most often referred to as a rhythm and blues singer, and that is how she made her name in the 1950s with records like “Good Rockin’ Daddy.” She is in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame. She was also comfortable, and convincing, singing pop standards, as she did in 1961 with “At Last,” which was written in 1941 and originally recorded by Glenn Miller’s orchestra. And among her four Grammy Awards (including a lifetime-achievement honor in 2003) was one for best jazz vocal performance, which she won in 1995 for the album “Mystery Lady: Songs of Billie Holiday.” Regardless of how she was categorized, she was admired. Expressing a common sentiment, Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote in 1990 that she had “one of the great voices in American popular music, with a huge range, a multiplicity of tones and vast reserves of volume.” For all her accomplishments, Ms. James had an up-and-down career, partly because of changing audience tastes but largely because of drug problems. She developed a heroin habit in the 1960s; after she overcame it in the 1970s, she began using cocaine. She candidly described her strles with addiction and her many trips to rehab in her autobiography, “Rage to Survive,” written with David Ritz (1995).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are many Etta James collections out there. The standard-bearers thus far have been the Chess Box and the Essential Etta James. This set attempts to do something else and goes deep into her catalog to dig out the gems from her years with Modern, Argo, Cadet, Chess, Warner Brothers, Island, and Private Music/BMG, and presents the full spectrum of her five-decade career. As such, there are many different kinds of songs here revealing the complexity of the vocalist herself, and as such, thus becomes a real portrait of the artist. Juxtapose, for instance, early sides like "The Wallflower Dance (Dance With Me Henry)," with its wild R&B bravado and the deep soul-blues of "All I Could Do Is Cry," the balladry of "The Man I Love," the bone-crushing blues of "The Sky Is Crying," and the torch song ballad technique on "My Dearest Darling," and the despairing soul inherent in songs such as "All the Way Down," and the listener begins to get an idea of just how vast and deep James talent really is. These 23 cuts give a fine and full picture of all that diversity without sacrificing a note of quality. This is a fine introduction to James for those listeners who have become acquainted with her in recent years, and a decent look at the later material for those cynical purists who think it was over and done by 1970. Recommended. - All Music Guide

LEON BIBB AND ERIC BIBB - Praising Peace: A Tribute To Paul Robeson (2006)

Thirty years on from his death, Paul Robeson is best remembered as the black American singer, actor and athlete who spent his life fighting racism and was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Leon Bibb, the singer and father of contemporary blues star Eric Bibb, was a close friend of Robeson, and this tribute matches old Robeson favourites against new songs and settings by Eric. The material is pleasant, if worthy, while the old songs range from Eric's easy-going harmonica-backed country blues treatment of Home in That Rock, to some fine, sturdy and no-nonsense singing from his dad. The selection covers the full range of Robeson's repertoire, from spirituals to socialism and sentimentality, and the gospel favourites like Motherless Child or the union anthem Joe Hill are predictably more interesting than yet another reworking of Shenandoah or Danny Boy. One is left wanting to hear how Robeson himself used to treat them. - guardian.co.uk

KAREN LAWRENCE AND BLUE BY NATURE - Hard Daze (2000)

Karen Lawrence, Blue by Nature’s driving force, is a dynamic singer and prolific songwriter. A charismatic performer with a spirited stage presence, Lawrence has enjoyed a challenging and diverse career. A stage performer continually since the age of 9, she fronted her first band, a blues outfit, at the age of 13. As front woman for the A&M band 1994: (produced by Jack Douglas ), Lawrence’s distinctive and emotive vocal stylings frequently put her on international critics’ "Best Female Singer" lists. Wrote Kerrang!... "it was 1994:’s Karen Lawrence who gave the others the choice of being second best or giving up". In addition to lead vocal and writing credits on Jeff Beck’s Epic/Legacy release Beckology, Lawrence’s most notable coup was composing "Prisoner," the theme song for the film Eyes of Laura Mars, which was immortalized by Barbra Streisand. Over 4 times platinum, the song has been identified in songbooks as one of the one hundred best love songs. Blue by Nature was formed in March 1993, when Lawrence and her collaborator of 14 years, rhythm guitarist Fred Hostetler, joined up with longtime friend Rick Dufay. Dufay, a former Aerosmith axeman, delivered an explosive and provocative guitar sound to the band. Four years and three critically acclaimed CD’s later, Dufay left to pursue a solo career and the torch was passed to young Brad Ayers. Ayers crisp Buddy Guy like riffs appear on the Hard Daze release. Shortly after the CD was finished, his promising career ended when he died of natural causes.

THE ZOMBIES - The Singles A's & B's (2002)

The Zombies are an English rock band, formed in 1961 in St Albans and led by Rod Argent, on piano and keyboards, and vocalist Colin Blunstone. The group scored a UK and United States hit in 1964 with "She's Not There". In the USA two further singles, "Tell Her No" and, in 1968, "Time of the Season", were also successful. Their 1968 album Odessey and Oracle, comprising twelve songs by the group's principal songwriters, Argent and Chris White, is ranked 80 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. After The Zombies disbanded, Rod Argent formed a band called Argent, with Chris White as a non-performing songwriter (it should be noted here that the Chris White who had a hit in 1976 with the single "Spanish Wine" is a different person). Colin Blunstone started a solo career after a brief period outside the music business, including working in the burglary claims section of an insurance company. Both Argent and White provided him with new songs. He also did studio vocals for The Alan Parsons Project.

Possibly the best of the many single-disc Zombies compilations that exist, and certainly the most concise, SINGLES A'S AND B'S contains both sides of all 11 Zombies singles released between 1964 and 1968. The Zombies only released two albums in their three-and-a-half year existence, 1964's BEGIN HERE and 1968's classic ODESSEY AND ORACLE. Given that Rod Argent and Chris White did not blossom as songwriters until late in the Zombies' career, SINGLES A'S AND B'S combines original Argent/White compositions like "She's Not There," "Tell Her No," "I Love You" and the underrated "She Does Everything For Me" with excellent covers of R&B classics like Little Anthony and the Imperials' "Going Out of My Head." This compilation, plus reissues of the band's two proper albums, will give all but the most fanatical Zombies fans everything they need. German compilation featuring 42 tracks.

DAVID BYRNE - Live from Austin, Texas (2007)

David Byrne is a modern renaissance man and that s not just a cliché. From the heady days as co-founder of the celebrated art new-wave group Talking Heads (1976-88) through his own constantly evolving and innovative solo music career, he has pursued his muse on many different artistic fronts. He s been the driving force behind a body of work that has been both intellectually daring and commercially successful...and he shows no signs of slowing down three decades later. This performance, captured on November 28, 2001, came on the heels of his hit single, Like Humans Do and the release of the album Look Into the Eyeball, which was another typically eclectic musical stew reflecting a variety of styles and influences, from Philly soul to a D.C. Go-Go inspired groove and his first-ever Spanish composition, Descondido Soy. Critics at the time called it his best work in years, and his performance on the Austin City Limits stage shows why. Joined by Austin s own eclectic tango ensemble Tosca, Byrne takes us down many different musical roads in his ACL debut. - amazon.com

CANNED HEAT - Live At Topanga Corral (1970)

This is one of the strongest documents to feature Canned Heat in concert. However, contrary to the title, these performances are not from the Topanga Corral - where the Heat were the house band off and on during the mid-1960s. Instead, it was later revealed the origins were actually from a Los Angeles club called the Kaleidoscope circa 1968. They most likely hail from the same batch of tapes that yielded the 4-plus-minute epic "Refried Boogie," which spread over Sides Three and Four on the Living the Blues (1968) two-LP package. The personnel includes Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitar/harmonica/vocals), Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass), Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (guitar), Bob "The Bear" Hite (vocals), and Aldolfo "Fito" de la Parra (drums). Indeed, these recordings were made prior to the rapid drug-related decline and eventual replacement of Vestine - who is actually in top flight throughout - with Harvey Mandel in mid-1969. Another factor in the chronology is the soulful interpretation of standard blues numbers, which would be incrementally abandoned for longer and more rambling psychedelic jams by the time of Live in Europe (1970). However, the difference between the early 1970s incarnation and this 'classic' lineup seems to lie primarily in their respective approaches. This seminal aggregate explores more traditional outlets such as the languid approach to B.B. King's "Sweet Sixteen," sporting some incendiary fretwork from the coupling of Wilson's smooth slide and Vestine's sinuous and punctuating leads. The former further exemplifies his bottleneck prowess on a rollicking reading of Elmore James' "Dust My Broom" that swings solid from tip to tail. As does the upbeat and slightly Creole-flavored "I Wish You Would," landing somewhere between the Yardbirds' aggressive take and Billy Boy Arnold's original. While interested parties are encouraged to find this set, caveat emptor, as the exact same material exists under a bevy of monikers. Most notable among these are Live at the Kaleidoscope 1969 (2000), Very Best of the Blues Years (2000), and as part of a two-fer with Vintage (1969) on Live at the Topanga Corral/Vintage (2001) - which arguably boasts the best sound, having been remastered. - cduniverse.com

COUNT FIVE - Psychotic Reaction (2007)

The Count Five was a 1960s garage rock band from San Jose, California, best known for their Top 10 single "Psychotic Reaction". The band was founded in 1964 by John "Mouse" Michalski (born 1948, Cleveland, Ohio) (lead guitar) and Roy Chaney (born 1948, Indianapolis, Indiana) took over bass duties, two high school friends who had previously played in several short-lived outfits. After going shortly under the name The Squires, and several line-up changes later, the Count Five were born. John "Sean" Byrne (1947-2008, born Dublin, Ireland) played rhythm guitar and lead vocals, and Craig "Butch" Atkinson (1947-2008, born San Jose, California) played drums. The Count Five gained distinction for their habit of wearing Count Dracula-style capes when playing live.

"Psychotic Reaction", an acknowledged cornerstone of garage rock, was initially devised by Byrne, with the group refining it and turning it into the highlight of their live sets. The song was influenced by the style of contemporary musicians such as The Standells and The Yardbirds. The band members were rejected by several record labels before they got signed to the Los Angeles-based Double Shot Records. "Psychotic Reaction" was released as a single, peaking at #5 in the U.S. charts in late 1966. The band got along for about another year, but dropped out of view altogether when their only hit had fallen from public memory. Another setback to a potential career in the music business was the decision of the five members (who were between the ages of 17 and 19) to pursue college degrees. By 1969, the Count Five had broken up, but their memory was immortalized in a 1972 essay by rock journalist Lester Bangs, entitled "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung." In the essay, Bangs credited the band for having released several albums — Carburetor Dung, Cartesian Jetstream, Ancient Lace and Wrought-Iron Railings, and Snowflakes Falling On the International Dateline — that displayed an increasing sense of artistry and refinement. However, none of these albums actually existed, except in Bangs' own imagination. The Count Five reunited only once, when they performed a concert in 1987 at a club in Santa Clara, California called "One Step Beyond". This performance has been released as Psychotic Reaction Live. The song "Psychotic Reaction" can be heard playing on the jukebox in an early scene in Wim Wenders' film Alice in the Cities (1974).

Craig Atkinson died on October 13, 1998 and John "Sean" Byrne died on December 15, 2008. Roy Chaney formed a new band in the 1990s called The Count (with Byrne and drummer Rocco Astrella, who played in the last version of the original group). The Count released their debut CD, Can't Sleep, in 2002. In 2006 they were inaugurated as one of the first into the San Jose Rock Hall of Fame. - wikipedia

JANIVA MAGNESS - Bury Him At The Crossroads (2004)

Magness, who won a 2004 W.C. Handy Award as Best Contemporary Blues Female Artist, seems cut from the same mold as singers like Lou Ann Barton -- there's a lovely rasp and conviction in her singing that brings sometimes mundane material alive. Working with a small band this time around, she can focus more on her singing, rather than becoming lost in the arrangements, and, in fact, it's the acoustic material here that serves her best, such as the interpretation of J.B. Lenoir's "The Whale Has Swallowed Me." At times the ensemble (which features Colin Linden on guitar) sounds a bit like a very professional bar band, but Magness has the class to cut through that and take it all a notch higher. The title track -- presumably a reference to Robert Johnson -- is a beautiful piece of work, haunting in its simplicity, and "The Soul of a Man" shows that the line between blues and soul is blurred indeed (and you could add gospel into that mix). It would be good to hear her with more classic material -- a lot of the songs here are good, but not completely memorable. However, there's no doubt that she deserves her award, and her future looks justifiably rosy. - cduniverse.com

ANTHONY GOMES thumbup

Anthony Gomes is a Canadian blues and blues rock guitarist and singer. Growing up in Toronto, Canada, Anthony's musical sojourn began unexpectedly. "For my 14th birthday, I wanted a computer and I was doing well in school, so my Dad got me a guitar as a surprise. Then, I surprised him. I fell in love with music and became very dedicated." Like many teen boys, his fire was fueled by what he calls, with a twinkle in his eye, "testosterone rock". His first stage appearance came in high school on band night, his band cranking the likes of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. He also was inspired to start writing original songs. The band won a local radio station contest, earning prize money and a chance to open for Bon Jovi, but Anthony decided it wasn't his path to follow. "I quit the band before that. My heart wasn't in it. I wanted to get more into a roots thing."

Anthony headed to the Us ain the late 1990s, first settling in Chicago and winning Buddy Guy's Legends 1998 "Best Unsigned Blues Band" competition. After several years Gomes traveled down to Nashville for yet another perspective on music. He explains, "I moved to Chicago to be a better musician and moved to Nahville to learn more about songwriting and be in that community." Anthony also released his first three albums , all varied with a genuine personal vision of the blues and beyond. His 1998 debut, "Blues In Technicolor" introduced him as a guitar-singerloaded with impressive firepower. Instead of following up with more of the same, Gomes boldly stepped back for an intimate acoustic offering in 2000 with "Sweet Stringin' Soul". And on 2002's "Unity" he baegan to achieving the album's title with a heady mix of styles that led Banditbluesradio to name it one of the Top 30 essential blues CDs of all time.

DR. JOHN - Live At Montreux 1995 (2011)

The opening cut, "Iko Iko," is a New Orleans signature song, and Dr. John puts equal love and energy into versions of standards ("Blue Skies," "Makin' Whoopee"), classic blues ("Come On [Let the Good Times Roll]"), and his own hits ("Right Place, Wrong Time"). A crack, professional backing band keeps things moving smoothly, but Dr. John's scruffy singing and dynamic ivory-tickling are center-stage throughout. New Orleans good-time ambassador Dr. John brings some Crescent City groove to the Montreux Jazz Festival on this rollicking live recording. Over time Dr. John has evolved from his freaky, voodoo-doctor persona of the 1970s into a suit-and-tie-wearing crooner, yet he still manages to deliver plenty of his irresistible vocal growl and down-and-dirty swamp-funk. - cduniverse.com

OTIS RUSH & FRIENDS - Live at Montreux 1986 (2011)

Southpaw guitarist Otis Rush made his debut in 1956 with a cover of Willie Dixon’s "I Can’t Quit You Baby", charting his first Top Ten R&B hit. Over the course of his 50-year career, Rush has established himself as one of the premiere bluesmen on the Chicago circuit. Often credited with being one of the architects of the West side guitar style, Rush’s esteemed status as a prime Chicago innovator is eternally assured by his trademark sound. Blues fans have said that his combination of ringing, vibrato-enhanced guitar work with an intense vocal delivery is powerful enough to force the hair on the backs of their necks upwards in silent salute. Otis Rush Live At Montreux 1986 features the Chicago blues legend at his spine-tingling best. For his first appearance at the Montreux Festival, Rush is joined on stage by fellow blues stars Eric Clapton and Luther Allison for a truly special show. The CD features nearly an hour-and-a-half of performances of Rush classics, including "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", "Double Trouble" and many more. - amazon.com

V.A. - Delta Swamp Rock: Sounds From The South (2011)

The fear, confronted with a two-CD set celebrating the music of the Deep South in the early 70s, is that most of it will be taken up with guitar solos. Delta Swamp Rock duly features a couple of tracks from Lynyrd Skynyrd and three from the Allman Brothers, but soloing, choogling, boogying and other bearded self-indulgences are banished across 25 songs of soul- and country-inflected rock. Joe South's version of Hush is a dancefloor belter; Cher's foghorn of a voice is oddly suited to Dr John's I Walk on Gilded Splinters; Bobbie Gentry's contributions are a delight. The Skynyrd choices seem a bit odd at first – one is sung by their original drummer, which is a bit like picking a Pete Best number to represent the Beatles on a compilation of British 60s rock – but by being songs rather than instrumental showcases they serve the set far better than, say, Freebird would have. Delta Swamp Rock expertly merges the familiar and the forgotten to wonderful effect.

DISC 1:
01. Lynyrd Skynyrd – The Seasons 02. Barefoot Jerry – Smokies 03. Joe South – Hush 04. Bobbie Gentry – Papa, Wont You Let Me Go to Town with You 05. Area Code 615 – Stone Fox Chase 06. Duane and Gregg Allman – God Rest his Soul 07. Cher – I Walk on Guilded Splinters 08. Cowboy – Please Be with Me 09. The Allman Brothers – Ain’t Wastin Time No More 10. Link Wray – Be What You Want To 11. Boz Scaggs – I’ll Be Long Gone 12. Lynyrd Skynyrd – Comin’ Home 13. Bobbie Gentry – Seasons Come, Seasons Go

DISC 2:
01. Leon Russell – Out in the Woods 02. Tony Joe White – Polk Salad Annie 03. Barefoot Jerry – Come to me Tonight 04. Duane and Gregg Allman – Morning Dew 05. Dan Penn – If Love Was Money 06. Linda Ronstadt – I Won’t Be Hangin Round 07. Waylon Jennings – Big D 08. Big Star – Thirteen 09. Bobbie Gentry – Mississippi Delta 10. Travis Wammack – I Forgot to Remember to Forget 11. Johnny Cash – If I Were A Carpenter 12. Billy Vera – I’m Leavin Here Tomorrow, Mama

LITTLE STEVEN

Steven Van Zandt grew up in the same south New Jersey shore scene as Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny Lyon, and was closely associated with them. He was a member of Springsteen's band Steel Mill in 1969-1970 and the Bruce Springsteen Band in 1971. He toured with the Dovells, then worked with Southside Johnny, helping him form the Asbury Jukes in 1974 and playing with the group; but he re-joined Springsteen in the E Street Band in early 1975. This group went on to massive success, and Van Zandt worked closely with Springsteen, co-producing The River (1980) and Born in the U.S.A. (1984) while also producing and writing material for Southside Johnny and Gary "U.S." Bonds. In 1982, he organized Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul and released Men Without Women that year. He left the E Street Band on amicable terms in April 1984 and released the second Disciples of Soul album, Voice of America, that spring.

His work as Little Steven found him taking an overt left-wing political stance; and in 1985 he organized Artists United Against Apartheid, recording the all-star Top 40 single "Sun City," which increased awareness about apartheid in South Africa and the fact that musicians appeared at the country's Sun City entertainment complex. In 1987, having shed the Disciples of Soul, he released his third album, Freedom, No Compromise. Revolution followed in 1989. Though Van Zandt was without a record contract during the 1990s, he produced other artists and was involved in soundtrack work. In 1995, he re-joined the E Street Band for recordings and performances in connection with Springsteen's Greatest Hits album. He turned to acting in 1998, taking a featured role in the successful television series The Sopranos. In 1999, he again re-joined the E Street Band for its reunion tour, and he released a new album, Born Again Savage. - allmusic.com

THE FLOCK - Flock Rock - The Best Of The Flock (1993)

Over the past few decades, the Flock's late-'60s and early-'70s legacy has been all but forgotten, and yet their highly idiosyncratic twist on progressive rock — one which used both classical music and jazz fusion as touchstones for truly mind-altering flights of fancy — remains as original as anything heard in the rock era. Cross-town heroes Chicago (or Chicago Transit Authority, as they were known at the time) were stealing headlines as the first rock & roll band with a fully integrated horn section, but this adventurous septet not only challenged this distinction with their own three-saxophone front, but went a step further by adding violinist Jerry Goodman to their ranks. Fueled by his dazzling virtuosity, the mostly classically trained ensemble's unprecedented combination of chorused vocals, horns, and strings within a rock context ultimately proved too challenging and oblique for commercial tastes, but would nevertheless lay the foundation for future, more commercially savvy prog rockers such as Kansas and Dixie Dregs. Revisiting the key moments from the Flock's two original albums, 1969's inspired eponymous debut and its disappointing successor of a couple years later, Dinosaur Swamps, Flock Rock: The Best of the Flock also unearths a few never-released cuts left on the cutting-room floor along with the band's botched third album. And even if Chicago's more consistent songwriting rightfully led to them notching all the chart hits and raking in all the dough, the Flock deserve credit for having carved a more unique, if significantly less successful, style which remains largely without equal.

SHELAGH McDONALD - Let No Man Steal Your Thyme (2005)

Shelagh McDonald is a Scottish folk singer, song-writer and guitarist who released two albums before her abrupt and mysterious disappearance in 1971. On her albums, she was backed up by many notables within the English folk-rock scene, including Richard Thompson, Dave Mattacks, Danny Thompson, Keith Tippett, Keith Christmas, the Fotheringay rhythm section, as well as Ian Whiteman, Roger Powell and Michael Evans, then members of Mighty Baby. On 23 June 2005, by which time McDonald's albums had been reissued on CD, an article by Charles Donovan appeared in The Independent, the first high profile piece about McDonald's disappearance. This prompted copycat features in local papers, the Glasgow Herald and the Scottish Daily Mail. It was the latter of these that caught the eye of McDonald herself. In November 2005, McDonald turned up in the offices of the Scottish Daily Mail and told them her story. She retreated from public life after a bad LSD trip left her paranoid and hallucinating, with a ruined voice. Living with her parents and working privately in Edinburgh, she met and married bookseller Gordon Farquhar; together, they lived a nomadic lifestyle in north Britain, living on welfare benefits and moving from house to house, and later tent to tent. As of 2005, McDonald says her voice has improved and she is again interested in music, and the renewed interest in her work by the public surprised and gratified her. Since then, however, nothing more has been heard of her.

"Let No Man Steal Your Thyme" is a two CD compilation album of the music of Shelagh McDonald released in 2005 on the Castle Music imprint of Sanctuary Records. The compilation contains various outtakes, live recordings and rarities in addition to the material originally released on "The Shelagh McDonald Album" and "Stargazer".

LISSIE - Why You Runnin' (2009) & Covered Up With Flowers (2011)

2009 - Why You Runnin'
2009 CD EP from the American singer/songwriter, produced by her friend Bill Reynolds, who just happens to be the bassist in Band of Horses. The five songs are stacked with the kind of billowing and rustic sentiments that come from broken hearts that have been patched as well as they can be, gaining that scar tissue that never makes them like new again, but gives them a refined personality, one that's subtle and powerful all in one fling. - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. Little Lovin' 02. Wedding Bells 03. Oh Mississippi 04. Everywhere I Go 05. Here Before

2011 - Covered Up With Flowers
"Covered Up With Flowers," Lissie's collection of 5 cover tunes, clearly reveals her talents as an indie folk-rocker. She is a very brash, talented artist, and her approach to these songs is a full frontal assault. What makes this collection of covers especially impressive is the broad spectrum of songs that she chose to perform: from "Pursuit of Happiness," by the rapper, Kid Cudi, to "Bad Romance," by the pop diva, Lady Gaga, to "Nothing Else Matters," by the heavy metal band, Metallica, to "The Ship Song", by the Goth-punker, Nick Cave, to "Games People Play," the tongue in cheek country rock hit by Joe South, from which the title of the CD is derived. Despite the wide diversity in song selection, there is a strong cohesion to how Lissie performs them--they rock, in an in your face, folkie kind of way. - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. Pursuit Of Happiness 02. Bad Romance 03. Games People Play 04. Nothing Else Matters 05. The Ship Song

THE LITTLE WILLIES - For The Good Times (2012)

The Little Willies are a collaboration between Nora Jones (piano and Vocals), Richard Julian (Guitar and vocals) Jim Campilongo (Guitar), Lee Alexander on Bass, and Dan Rieser on drums, who all share a common interest in playing classic country tunes. It’s been five years since their last studio session (which produced The Little Willies), but For The Good Times was definitely worth the wait. Like their first release, the disc is composed mostly of covers of classic country songs from some of their favorite writers. Kris Kristofferson, who’s song “Best Of All Possible Worlds” appeared on the first album, is the source of the classic title song, but the selections range widely, beginning with an electrified version of Ralph Stanley’s bluegrass classic “I Worship You,” and Scott Wiseman’s “Remember Me”; the mood transitions through Richard Julian singing Cal Martin’s “Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves,” where Campilongo lays on the some guitar licks that make us feel the like we’re up there with them in the cab of that runaway diesel. You can almost smell the oily smoke and bakelite. They shift gears again with a version of Cliff Friend and Irving Mills’s “Lovesick Blues” that would do Hank proud. Then Nora kicks up a bit of attitude with Loretta Lynn’s “Fist City.” But the album doesn’t have a narrowly-defined notion of country music. Richard Julian does an R&B-toned version of Willie Nelson’s “Permanently Lonely,” with sweet melancholic harmonies and drunken piano rifts courtesy of Nora Jones. Quincey Jones and co.’s “Foul Owl On the Prowl,” from In the Heat of the Night, follows. There is also the rollicking Jim Compalongo original, “Tommy Rockwood,” a medley of almost-but-not-quite-familiar material done in a twangy guitar/honky-tonk piano style reminiscent of instrumentals that were popular before the British invasion changed the rock landscape. - driftwoodmagazine.com

QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE - Anthology Box 1966-70 (2011)

At their best, Quicksilver Messenger Service sounded like a blend of early Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and the Grateful Dead, but almost constant personnel changes kept them from truly evolving into what they could have been. This set collects outtakes from a 1967 studio session, live tracks from a pair of concerts at the Fillmore in 1966 and 1967, live tracks from a concert at the Fillmore East in 1968, live tracks from a concert at Winterland in 1970, and tracks from a performance at the Old Mill Tavern, also from 1970. There's also a DVD featuring video footage from various shows the group played between 1967 and 1973. The sound is decent, and there are many times when the band rises to the occasion, but this is definitely a set for serious fans and collectors only. - allmusic.com

CRAIG CHAQUICO - Follow The Sun (2009)

When the famed rock guitarist emerged from his years with Jefferson Starship (later Starship) and became a solo artist in the mid-'90s, his popular adult contemporary instrumental sound was anchored in a distinctive vibe he defined with the title of his debut solo album, Acoustic Highway. He was coasting along that road for years before deciding to pick up his blazing electric axe again for his Latin-flavored 2000 hit "Café Carnival." The track's success no doubt inspired him to start mixing acoustic and electric on subsequent projects, and Follow the Sun - his first non-holiday disc in five years - blends the best of both sounds. It kicks off with the blazing Latin and blues fired, Santana-like "Luz Da Mae," which in Portuguese (Chaquico's heritage) means "Mother Moon." The next track, "Azores Lisboa," which refers to the Azores Islands and Lisbon, has a similar electric and brassy Latin party vibe which will make the listener wonder if there's a theme taking shape. Turns out, the disc is dedicated to the memories of Chaquico's beloved parents, whose families hailed from Lisbon. There's also a nice tie-in to the past as he uses the first guitar his parents ever gave him on the ambient meditation (featuring acoustic and electric) "The Coast of Orion" and the happy and jangling "Island Breeze." The set can be enjoyed thoroughly even without knowing that emotional element, as it mixes the guitarist's bright and eternally optimistic melodies with playing that is seductive when it needs to be (the soulful, tropical "Fantasy in Paradise") and edgy and crackling soon enough (the robust, urban flowing "Barefoot in the Sand"). Adding a blues-rock flair to everything Chaquico does is his longtime right-hand man, keyboard great Ozzie Ahlers. While all of the originals are compelling, Chaquico makes a few quirky, history-filled cover choices which may puzzle fans a bit. Kenny G's "Songbird" set the standard for the smooth jazz era but is more than the unique sound the guitarist centered his own career on. And the original instrumental version of "Lights Out San Francisco" (from 1997's Once in a Blue Universe) is stronger than this pleasant vocal version with singer Rolf Hartley. - cduniverse.com

DIXIE CHICKS - VH1 Storytellers (2011) @ DVD Audiorip

Back in 2003, the Dixie Chicks were in some pretty hot water after lead singer, Natalie Maines, publicly criticized President George W. Bush and the war in Iraq. While giving a concert in London Maines said, “Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.” After the infamous quote was said, the girls were ridiculed and a public boycott of all things Dixie Chicks ensued. In fact, when this all went down their cover of Stevie Nicks’ “Landslide” fell from No. 10 to 43 on the charts in a week. Years later, the girls are now back and releasing a live DVD from their VH1 special “Dixie Chicks Storytellers“. The live set was recored at the iconic Los Angeles Theater back in 2006 and will feature most of their classics.

Recorded live in September 2006 at the historic Los Angeles Theater, Dixie Chicks Storytellers was the grand finale in the whirlwind that surrounded the release of the band's 5x Grammy Award winning album Taking the Long Way. Fans are treated to personal anecdotes and inspiration around some of the band's biggest hits including "Not Ready to Make Nice," "Cowboy Take Me Away" and "Wide Open Spaces." Dixie Chicks Storytellers also features three never before seen performances from the original broadcast including "Lullaby," "Easy Silence" and "So Hard." The Dixie Chicks are witty, charming and sometimes irreverent, but above all, incredible musicians and songwriters. With over 25 million albums sold, Dixie Chicks are the biggest selling female band of all time in the U.S. Dixie Chicks are Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Robison. - amazon.com

VINCE GILL - Guitar Slinger [Deluxe Edition] (2011)

"I had no expectations of what it would sound like in my home studio," he says. "I've never recorded in my house before. So I discovered an awful lot about how the rooms sound, and it's a real warm record". "I don't know what it is, but it's so different than most studios in that there are windows all the way around the room. You look out and see trees. There's such a great spirit running around in the house and in the rooms that all the musicians have raved about the vibe. It's real low key; it's not commercial-feeling at all." Guitar Slinger is the follow-up to his critically acclaimed four-CD, 43-song box set, These Days, which was certified platinum, won the 2006 Grammy for Best Country Album and received an overall Grammy Album of the Year nomination. After a long and musically productive spell of writing, touring and recording with other artists, Vince Gill released the lead track "Threaten Me With Heaven". Gill co-wrote "Threaten Me With Heaven" with his wife, singer/songwriter Amy Grant, Dillon O'Brian and Will Owsley. - amazon.com

ANDREA CORR - Ten Feet High (2007)

2007 debut solo album from one-fourth of the Irish Pop quartet The Corrs. Produced by Nellee Hooper, with Bono at the helm as Executive Producer, Ten Feet High reveals Andrea Corr's wealth of hidden riches, a natural gift for lyrical storytelling, and a voice that errs more on the side of deadpan and understatement than traditional diva delivery. After twelve years and thirty million albums, The Corrs decided it was time for their much-mooted hiatus following the release of 2005's 'Home'. Each one of them went home to Ireland, but whilst Sharon, Caroline and Jim began to raise their families, Andrea undertook a new life of her own as a solo artist. When mutual friend Bono introduced Andrea to Nellee Hooper, who she had particularly admired for his work with Bjork and Massive Attack, a solid union was formed. - amazon.com

IAN GILLAN - The Solid Gold Collection (2005)

Talking about good rock music is like talking about Ian Gillan. Widely recognised as one of the most significant and influential musicians of all time. No wonder why he still plays sold out arenas (either fronting Deep Purple or solo) after 40 years on the road…. and take a good look next time you go to a DP or Gillan concert. See the people in the audience…. not many other bands (not to mention musical genres) have such a fanatical audience and such diversity: high school teenagers, workers in their late 50’s, young businessmen and everything in between! It is just amazing how all these (one could say different in each other) people sing every single lyric of every single bloody song with such a passion!! One could say that Ian Gillan has done it all… but then again he has so much to offer… A career full of successes, always keeping an open mind, many ups, a few downs, always searching, always dreaming, some controversy, loads of fun, loads of drinking… yeah man talking about Ian Gillan is like talking about rock music! - ian-gillan.com

PAPER LACE - Best Of Paper Lace (2002)

Formed in 1969 in Nottingham, England, and made up of Michael Vaughn, Chris Morris, Carlo Santanna, Cliff Fish, and Phillip Wright, Paper Lace was one of hundreds of pop bands in England looking for the big time while slogging their way through small club gigs and brief television appearances. Their big break came in 1974 when their version of the tear-jerking bubblegum tune "Billy, Don't Be a Hero" won top honors on Opportunity Knocks, a nationwide talent-show on ITV. They rode that song all the way to the top of the U.K. charts but were aced out of any sales in the U.S. by Bo Donaldson & the Haywoods' transcendent version. Their next single,"The Night Chicago Died," did manage to hit the number one slot on the U.S. charts (number three in the U.K.) and then that was it. The group released two albums, Paper Lace and Other Bits of Material in 1974 and First Editon in 1975, and did a quick fade from the public eye. In 1978 they surfaced briefly with a singalong version of "We've Got the Whole World in Our Hands" with their local football team, Nottingham Forest FC, and the disappeared forever. - answers.com

HENRY GRAY - Lucky Man (1990)

When blues pianist Henry Gray released Lucky Man in 1990, it was his first solo American album despite years of recording and playing with Howlin’ Wolf. This release is the reissue of the original vinyl LP. Outside of a cover of Fats Domino’s “My Girl Josephine,” Lucky Man is straight-up Windy City blues. For the most part, Gray cherry picks the songbooks of Jimmy Rogers, Little Walter, J.B. Lenoir and Big Maceo, all artists he backed at one point. Rogers’ mournful “Out on the Road” is especially effective, as is Jimmy Reed’s witty “Boogie in the Dark.” There are a smattering of Gray originals throughout, including the title track, a tale about a guy who can’t lose at love or gambling (that is a lucky man!). “Cold Chills” is an exemplary slow blues where Gray really gives the treble end of the keyboard a workout, and “It Ain’t No Use” is an attractive slowish blues that Gray takes credit for, but he “borrowed” it from Swamp Dogg via Z.Z. Hill. Backed by several noted Chicago sidemen and recorded in that city, one gets the feeling Gray knocked this album out in about three or four hours. But that’s something pros can do. - offbeat.com

THE CRUSADERS WITH B.B. KING AND THE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - Royal Jam (1982)

Around this time in their heyday, the Crusaders were experimenting with orchestral/jazz fusions in concert - and MCA thought enough of them to capture the music in London's Royal Festival Hall one fine summer. Crusader pianist/sparkplug Joe Sample evidently arranged and orchestrated all of the Royal Philharmonic's parts himself, not necessarily with the expertise of a full-time practitioner of the craft. Too often, the orchestrations are piled on with a shovel; the orchestral "Overture" is a particularly mawkish piece of work. But the Crusaders still had their signature rhythm section pumping away, with drummer Stix Hooper in a particularly propulsive mood all night -- and they carry the excess weight easily along in the funky groove. Things come to a peak when fellow MCA signee B.B. King slips on to the stage, first in a stomping "The Thrill Is Gone" and then in one of the most infectious tracks he or the Crusaders ever cut, "Better Not Look Down." It's a master class in economy, every guitar note landing squarely in Stix's pocket, Sample matching every brief lick with a funky comment on the electric piano, the King's command over the British audience complete. King also tries out the big Crusaders vocal hit "Street Life," but this time, guest singer Josie James has him beat - and there are some evidently unplanned numbers for King and the Crusaders as encores. Elsewhere, guitarist David T. Walker is on-hand to provide economic, to-the-point commentary in his own style; James is also featured in an exuberant "Burnin' Up the Carnival." Apart from his reliable comping on electric piano. Sample also provides some elaborate elegance on solo acoustic piano on "Fly With Wings of Love," while tenor player Wilton Felder acts as the genial emcee. The original double-LP issue took in the second half of the programs in London - about an hour of music, easily transferable to one CD - and it's one of the band's most enjoyable albums of that period. - cduniverse.com

V.A. - A-Square (Of Course): The Story of Michigan's Legendary A-Square Records (2008)

Michigan had one of the most vital rock & roll scenes of the 1960s, and while many of the best known Michigan bands came from the psychedelic-era movement that centered around Detroit's Grande Ballroom (most notably the MC5 and the Stooges), there was already a thriving rock scene going back to the early years of the decade, and one of the great movers and shakers in Michigan rock was a guy named Jeep Holland. Based in Ann Arbor, Holland managed one of the city's best record stores, booked bands, and launched a record label, A Square Records, that released classic sides from some of the area's most notable bands. A-Square (Of Course) is a fine and long-overdue retrospective of material from the A Square vaults, though the disc cheats a bit as a label overview. Instead of simply collecting A Square releases, compiler Alec Palao has also included material from a number of acts that Holland booked and managed, and while this gives a broader picture of the Ann Arbor/Detroit music scene in the mid-'60s (as well as a more detailed look at the sort of music Holland championed), if you're looking for an accurate history of the A Square label, some of the music here will throw you off the trail. And perhaps the best and best-known tracks on here, "Looking At You" and "Borderline" by the MC5, weren't really released by A Square -- the band's manager, John Sinclair, simply put the label's name and logo on their self-released single! But these minor gripes aside, this is a great sampler of top-notch mid-'60s rock & roll with the classic Michigan sound and feel. The Scot Richard Case (who later evolved into SRC) are represented with five songs, and while they weren't much on original material (the spooky "Who Is That Girl" is the only group-penned tune here), Scott Richardson was one of the best vocalists on the scene and their covers of "Get the Picture," "Midnight to Six Man" and "I'm So Glad" rock convincingly. The Thyme land a whopping eight songs on this collection, and while they weren't quite so remarkable to merit so much attention here, they had a sure hand for folk-rock (not a common thing in Michigan at the time) and "Window Song," "Love to Love" and "Very Last Day" are fine stuff. Dick Wagner, who later went on to star status backing up Alice Cooper and Lou Reed, is represented with three tunes by his early group the Bossmen (most notably a solid psych-tinged ballad "Listen My Girl") as well as a version of the Frost's "Mystery Man" that predated their speaker-shattering debut album Frost Music. James Osterberg, a year away from changing his name to Iggy Pop and forming the Stooges, handles both drums and vocals on the Prime Movers' raw reworking of "I'm a Man," and the Up's "Just Like an Aborigine" is nearly as good a summation of the White Panther Party ethos as anything the MC5 ever waxed. Anyone with a taste for mid-'60s rock will find plenty of buried treasure on A-Square (Of Course), and it's a must for anyone interested in the history of Midwest music. - allmusic.com

THE MOVE - Anthology 1966-1972 (2008)

The story of The Move is as mad, bad and dangerous as any rock 'n' roll tale gets. The cast includes four loutish hot-heads, one shy songwriter, and a scheming, Mexican 'tached manager. And let's not forget one furious British Prime Minister. Travelling with the band in the back of the van is one nasty looking axe and a case of smoke bombs. Chasing them out of the nation's clubs and ballrooms is a queue of fist-waving venue managers demanding explanations for the crowd disturbances and splintered stages. That's hardly the start of it. There's a quite brilliant procession of singles that helped create a second golden age of British pop. Secret service agents loitering menacingly in the shadows. Acid-induced breakdowns. Boozy blackouts. A High Court appearance decked out in granny perms, floral jackets and dark glasses. Probably the most notorious and costly postcard ever produced. High jinx with Jimi Hendrix. Endless rows, punch-ups and changes in personnel. And, quite possibly, the most protracted split in pop history. On a happier note, The Move's work has never been so highly regarded, and this latest, career-crunching 4-CD collection, the sovereign set in Salvo/Fly's programme of 40th anniversary releases, presents the band in various hues. From Who-influenced mod mavericks to beat group harmony specialists, flower power opportunists to power pop sophisticates, and psychedelic jamming band to progressive and hard rock pioneers, The Move are revealed here as a defining example of late '60s /early '70s pop era eclectics. - bandweblogs.com

LISSIE

Elisabeth Maurus, known by her stage name Lissie, is an American folk rock artist and Paste Magazine's #1 best new solo artist of 2010. Lissie Maurus was raised in the riverside town of Rock Island, IL, and she drew upon those blue-collar Midwestern origins to create her own form of indie folk music. The granddaughter of an international barbershop quarter champion, she grew up singing in theater productions, eventually picking up the guitar and playing her own songs at local coffeeshops as a teenager. Lissie was also something of a rebel; she got thrown out of high school during her senior year, spent a brief period at Colorado State University, relocated to Paris for a semester, and eventually ditched college altogether to pursue her music career. Returning to the U.S., Lissie headed west and settled in Los Angeles, where she became a fixture on the local venue circuit and landed a national tour opening for Lenny Kravitz. Lissie's music had already appeared on shows like The O.C., Veronica Mars, and House by the time she moved to California, and she widened her fan base by launching a weekly songwriter's circle at her local bar, Crane's Hollywood Tavern, and releasing a self-titled EP.

Things truly began picking up speed in 2009, though, when Lissie released the dusky Why You Runnin' and toured the country alongside Ray LaMontagne. Part of the Why You Runnin' EP had been recorded in the U.K., and she returned there in early 2010 to promote the release of her first full-length album, Catching a Tiger. Although she also made several appearances in America - including a standout performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and a single date with the rebooted Lilith Fair - Lissie spent most of her time touring Europe, where her debut record was released in June. An American release followed in August, courtesy of Fat Possum Records. - allmusic.com

Various Artists [Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule, North Mississippi Allstars Duo & Friends] - Another One For Woody (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

An absolutely historical night of music. A bitter-sweet night of music. A magical combination of guitar-shredding artists who came together for the memory of one man. Allen Woody! This was a man whose musical presence touched the lives of numerous musicians, inspired a genre and who’s musical contribution deserves recognition.

Allen Woody!! For those of us who tend to seek out a bass line in a song, the name Allen Woody should register in your brain’s musical library. Specifically, in the southern rock genre. He was the stand-out bassist for bands such as The Allman Brothers Band, Gov’t Mule, The Artimus Pyle Band and more.

His unexpected passing on August 26, 2000 encouraged his fellow musicians to hold the first benefit called One For Woody in September 2000. Ten years later, Warren Haynes and an ARSENAL of guitar-wielding friends put together the second benefit for this greatly missed musician: Another One For Woody: “Wish You Were Here!”
