COLD CHISEL - Teenage Love [Collector's Edition] (2011)

Cold Chisel is a rock band that originated in Adelaide, Australia. It is one of the most acclaimed Australian rock bands of all time, with a string of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s and huge sales that continue to this day, although its success and acclaim was almost completely restricted to Australia and New Zealand.

Digitally remastered edition of this 1994 rarities collection from the Australian Rock 'n' Roll institution. Fronted by Jimmy Barnes, Cold Chisel's brand of no-nonsense Rock may not have been as riff-heavy as AC/DC, but their beloved back catalog remains as timeless as any Rock band before or since.

TEREZ MONTCALM - Here's To You: Songs For Shirley Horn (2011)

Térez Montcalm is a Canadian jazz singer and guitarist who broke through to international success in 2007. Exhibiting an extraordinarily strong voice from an early age, she attended music school as a teenager and ultimately made her full-length recording debut in 1994 with the album Risque on BMG. Sung primarily in French and comprised of original material as well as covers of Charles Aznavour, Tom Waits, and others, Risque was well received from a critical standpoint, and in the wake of its release, Montcalm was awarded a Prix Rapsat-Lelievre in 1995. It's never an accident when a singer records an album in tribute to another singer. If Térez Montcalm launched herself into Here's To You - Songs For Shirley Horn, it is obviously because Horn is, as she says, her "all-time favorite singer". Her mastery of ballads is what fascinates Térez Montcalm the most: "She was the only one able to sing such slow ballads, give them such a laid-back tempo, slow the swing down this way."

TRACKS:
01. Here's to Life 02. Nice'n'easy 03. If You Love Me 04. The Rules of the Road 05. A Song for You 06. The Great City 07. A Time for Love 08. Just in Time 09. One at a Time 10. How Am I to Know 11. Isn't It a Pity 12. You Won't Forget Me

THE STRAWBS - Hero and Heroine In Ascencia (2011)

Released in 1974, Hero & Heroine was one of the Strawbs' more popular albums, making the Top 100 in the U.S. This release is not the original recording, nor an expanded edition of it, but a much later reworking of the same material, recorded between November 2010 and March 2011. Three of the Strawbs who played on the 1974 Hero & Heroine album (Dave Cousins, Dave Lambert, and Chas Cronk) remained in the lineup this time around, with John Young on keyboards and Tony Fernandez on drums. This lineup had recently toured Canada and the U.K. to play the whole of the Hero & Heroine album (as well as some other Strawbs material), so in a sense it's a souvenir of Hero & Heroine as it was presented more than 35 years after the record's original release. As such, however, it's mostly for dedicated fans, quite a few of whom are listed in the CD booklet as having supported Hero & Heroine in Ascencia's production. It's different from the original, of course, in the unavoidable different flavor given to it by more modern production and instruments, though also via the absence of John Hawken, the keyboard player on the 1974 album. - allmusic.com

RORY GALLAGHER - Big Guns: The Very Best Of Rory Gallagher (2005)

Remastered, this is the first real attempt to put together a coherent picture of the career of the guitar slinger from County Donegal, and very welcome it is too. Gallagher was possibly the the most straightforward man in a business filled with inflated egos and wrong-headed assumptions about celebrity. He spent his entire life following his first love -the blues - and legends abound about the plaid-shirt-wearing dude with his battered old strat and his dedication to nothing more fancy than a drink and treading the boards. In fact it's Rory's live work that's key to understanding his appeal. Until this package arrived you would have been best picking up either Live In Europe or Irish Tour 74 to really sample the man in his purest form. This double set is liberally sprinkled with such moments though in rarer form and stretching back to his pre-solo days with power trio Taste. But the live favourites are all present and correct: ''Bullfrog Blues'', ''Going To My Hometown'' (with its frantic mandolin) and ''Messin' With The Kid''. Here we see how a life almost constantly on the road honed his stripped-down formula to something incredibly, joyfully raw. ''Bullfrog Blues'' features some of the rudest slide work ever committed to tape, and this from a man who was such a purist that he frowned on the use of any effects pedals. Of course this set also gives us a fair representation of his studio work too. Raised on country blues and R 'n' B, Gallagher's technique and style was impeccable and also much more than a bar room 12-bar competence. As already mentioned he was adept on the mandolin and slide, and tracks such as ''Just The Smile'' (from his first album) and ''Out On The Western Plain'' reveal a sensitive acoustic technique. ''They Don't Make Them Like You Anymore'' even demonstrates a canny understanding of jazz shapes! Any aficionado will grumble at omissions. This reviewer regrets the lack of ''Laundromat'' (from Live In Europe) and ''Cradle Rock'' (from Tattoo), yet as an overview it works just fine. If you fancy getting back to basics, Rory was, and always will be, yer man. - amazon.com

V.A. - Sixties Classics (2001) thumbupthumbupthumbup

This three-disc set (it could easily have been a double-disc collection with some shifting of tracks) ranges widely across the AM pop genres of the 1960s, and includes such varied tracks as Ray Peterson's "Tell Laura I Love Her," Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," Ronny & the Daytonas' "GTO," the Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City," and the Box Tops' "The Letter." While it certainly isn't exhaustive, it does feature the original single mixes of these hits, and makes for a fine road trip down memory lane. Yes, it's a BMG compilation, but these are all original recordings, not cheesy re-recordings that all of us oldies collectors despise. I'd like to point out that for the money you will get some hard-to-find gems, plus Last Date/Floyd Kramer, GTO/Ronny & The Daytonas, and Baby The Rain Must Fall/Glenn Yarbrough are all difficult to find in their original versions. The ones available on iTunes are not the original recordings, so be advised. I highly recommend this three disc set if you are looking to fill out your digital oldies collection and want the original recordings. Liner notes are sparse, but you are given the name of the original labels. - allmusic.com

MARY FLOWER - Bridges (2009)

Mary Flower, a 2008 (and 2012) Blues Music Award Nominee for “Acoustic Artist of the Year,” brings her uniquely personal vision of roots music to the most fully realized album of her career. On Bridges, the guitarist’s sound is technically dazzling yet grounded in the down-to-earth simplicity of early 20th century American music. In unearthing obscure gems from the songbooks of 1920s and ’30s America to complement her own rootsy compositions, Flower explores and illuminates the complex relationships between Piedmont blues, ragtime, jazz, and old-time gospel music. Unconventional instruments such as piano, tuba, accordion, clarinet, mandolin, and saxophone flesh out the arrangements on 14 tracks that, taken together, reveal Flower to be capable of remarkable nuance — as well as more stylistic diversity than just about any other artist currently recording under the “acoustic blues” banner. - maryflower.bandcamp.com

JIMMY PAGE - Playin' Up A Storm (2011)

Before the name Jimmy Page became synonymous with Led Zeppelin and Hard Rock guitar, the guitarist was a much sought-after session player, appearing on an assortment of artists' recordings. Some were well known (The Kinks, The Who, Joe Cocker), others somewhat more obscure, such as this rare album with vocalist Keith The Groot, which additionally features half a dozen of the cream of the crop of British studio musicians. Including future Led Zeppelin bass player John Paul Jones, and Nicky Hopkins, later often found tickling the ivories in the company of The Rolling Stones. Jimmy touched upon a variety of musical styles throughout his career, and these fourteen tracks - which he also co-produced - can be effectively placed in the 1960s Rock genre. The amps are not yet overdriven and cranked up to eleven, but you do get a glimpse into Page's imposing work as a "hired gun" playing catchy tunes and memorable riffs. Page's solo on "Burn Up" for example is a true gem, right up there with his solo on Joe Cocker's version of "Blackbird". Guitarist Albert Lee, the other great "axe man" on this album, spent the mid 60's as a top R & B guitarist in England, but reinvented himself in the 70's as one of the most excellent rockabilly and country pickers in the world. Subsequently becoming one of the most in-demand session players in Nashville and Los Angeles. He also spent many years playing alongside the the Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris and Eric Clapton. - thestoreformusic.com

QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE - Lost Gold And Silver (1999)

As an overview of one of the trailblazing bands of the San Francisco sound, this two-disc assortment of unreleased studio and performance oddities takes a backseat to another two-disc collection, Sons of Mercury, a 1991 best-of retrospective from Rhino. That said, Lost Silver and Gold is of definite interest to devotees of the band and Bay Area psychedelia in general, as well as younger jam-band fans interested in delving deeper into '60s rock than the Grateful Dead. Quicksilver's foundation was the tandem guitar attack of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan, a duo capable of consistently inventive (if occasionally long-winded) improvisation. (Greg Elmore and bassist David Freiberg rounded out the crucial QMS lineup.) Lost Silver and Gold supplements the lengthy live opening disc with a briefer set of unreleased demos, rarities, and soundtrack recordings that illustrate the group's strengths (terrific interplay) and weaknesses (shaky vocals). - amazon.com

"Album of the Year" - The Blues Music Awards 2012 - Nominations

The Blues Foundation, based in Memphis, has announced the nominees for the organization's 33rd annual Blues Music Awards, confirming the awards show for Thursday, May 10th, 2012 at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis. The annual event is a houserockin' party, typically running better than seven hours and featuring performances by dozens of deserving nominees. Like last year, the awards ceremony will be broadcast live on XM Sirius satellite radio, on B.B. King's Bluesville channel.

There are few real surprises among this year's group of Blues Music Award nominees. The Blues Foundation caught up with blues fans' musical tastes and artists like Joe Bonamassa, George Thorogood, and Warren Haynes all received their first nominations. There seem to be more multiple nominations this year as well, artists like Sugar Ray & the Bluetones, Tab Benoit, and Johnny Sansone all receiving four nominations while Eugene Hideaway Bridges, Lazy Lester, David Maxwell, Ana Popovic, and Johnny Rawls all received three nominations each.

Here are The Blues Music Award nominations for "Album of the Year" (2012):

- Eugene Hideaway Bridges - Rock And A Hard Place
- Johnny Sansone - The Lord Is Waiting And The Devil Is Too

ETTA JAMES - The Dreamer (2011)

Etta's last studio recording as she has retired from the music business after more than 50 years! She is terminally ill. The sad news came over the weekend that Rhythm & Blues legend Etta James is dying of chronic luekemia.

Apparently, Etta James' musical career ends with The Dreamer. The legendary vocalist announced a few months back that this would be her final album; she's retiring from music in order to deal with serious medical issues. Co-produced by James, Josh Sklair, and her sons Danto and Sametto, The Dreamer's 11 tracks offer an imperfect but utterly worthy portrait of the places she's been musically with a couple of selections that reveal her dictum that "every song is a blues." Her signature meld of soul, blues, rhythm & blues, rock, and country are all on display here. The production underscores her lifelong commitment to these styles and suits the material at large. Her musical accompanists include not only her co-producers, but guitarists Leo Nocentelli and Big Terry de Rouen, saxophonist Jimmy Z., trombonist Kraig Kilby, and trumpeter Lee Thornburg. Ms. James' choice of material is rigorous even if two of its selections are questionable: the cover of Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" doesn't lend itself well to the choogling boogie arrangement here; and the funkified reading of contemporary country stars Little Big Town's "Boondocks" sounds like she tried too hard to make it fit. These cuts aside, the rest of the material is vintage; it reflects the work of Ms. James' influences and contemporaries. Her readings of Otis Redding's "Cigarettes & Coffee" and "Champagne & Wine," Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Dreamer," Bob Montgomery's country-pop standard "Misty Blue," Ray Charles' "In the Evening," Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "That's the Chance You Take" and "Too Tired," and Little Milton's "Let Me Down Easy" all contain within them not only their original traces, but the musical experience necessary to bring their subtler, deeper meanings to the fore. She re-creates these songs not as mere touchstones or mementos from a career, but as signposts to the living, breathing tradition that bears the signature and considerable influence of her life upon them. The Dreamer is a fitting, if not perfect, bookend to one of American popular music's most iconic lives. - allmusic.com

WILLIE NELSON – Remember Me, Vol.1 (2011)

Not unlike its predecessor, 2010's "Country Music", "Remember Me, Vol. 1" finds Willie Nelson paying tribute to a who's who of country music tunesmiths. The difference is, while Country Music was Nelson's take on the genre's tried-and-true standards, Remember Me is an unapologetic tribute album; Nelson is tipping his hat to his heroes and friends, including Merle Haggard, George Jones, Hank Snow, Tex Williams, Kris Kristofferson and Merle Travis. The album satisfies with its exemplary performances, proving that sometimes all a great band needs are great ingredients. The only chink in the armor is Nelson himself. Guitar playing notwithstanding, Nelson's vocals sound benign on uptempo tracks like "Smoke, Smoke Smoke (That Cigarette)" and "Roly Poly." The mild voice made in country/western heaven lends itself well to the ballads on Remember Me but is otherwise overshadowed by the deft skills of Mason and Garrish. Fans of Nelson will appreciate the eclectic mix of covers on Remember Me, Vol. 1, but the dryness in Nelson's voice is bound to leave more than a few listeners cold. The album can stand on its own, thanks to its fine musicianship, but those looking for an authentic and animated Nelson performance will be disappointed. - guitarworld.com

Universal's double-disc Icon doubles the size of their single-disc set of the same name and covers the same ground only in greater detail, adding a few more live tracks and studio staples to draw a greater picture of his ABC and MCA recordings of the late ‘60s, ‘70s, and beyond. It’s a bit shorter than 2006’s Gold and not quite as rounded, yet it’s still a very good sampler of B.B. King at his latter-day best. - allmusic.com

THE FIRST BARBARIANS - Live From Kilburn (2007)

"The First Barbarians: Live from Kilburn" is a concert album by Ronnie Wood and band. The material was recorded in July 1974 at one of two performances at London's Kilburn Gaumont State Theatre to promote Wood's album "I've Got My Own Album to Do". At the time of the concert the band was billed as Woody and Friends. The name First Barbarians is a retronym referring to The New Barbarians, the band Wood put together for a six-week tour in 1979, whose lineup included three of the musicians who played at the July 1974 Kilburn gigs (Wood, Keith Richards and Ian McLagan).

There's no getting around that the recording is as rough (it sounds just barely restored) as the performances, but keeping that in mind, Live from Kilburn is still a hell of a good time: high-spirited, boozy rock & roll whose party spirit is only enhanced by the appearance of Rod Stewart on a couple of tracks (including a very good "Take a Look at the Guy"). The raw, ragged nature of this recording makes this the exclusive province of the dedicated - this is so messy that there may be some serious fans who will be more satisfied with "Buried Alive", which is a tighter concert all around - but the truly dedicated will still surely have a good time with this, warts 'n' all. - allmusic com

THE TRAVELING WILBURYS - Wil-Berry Jam (2011)
The Traveling Wilburys (sometimes shortened to the Wilburys) were an English–American supergroup consisting of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty, accompanied by drummer Jim Keltner. The band recorded two albums in 1988 and 1990, though Roy Orbison died before the second was recorded. "Wilbury" was a slang term first used by Harrison during the recording of Cloud Nine with Jeff Lynne. Referring to recording errors created by some faulty equipment, Harrison jokingly remarked to Lynne, "We'll bury 'em in the mix". Thereafter, they used the term for any small error in performance and the term was used again when the group were together. Harrison sested "The Trembling Wilburys" as the group's name; instead, Lynne sested "Traveling", with which the group agreed.

ZZ TOP - Bootlegs = Goodlegs (1980)

After problems in the beginning ZZ Top became the most popular band in Texas with their straight music until 1972, and not seldomly played open-air concerts for upwards from 30,000 visitors. Under the titel 'Taking Texas to the World', Z Z Top undertook a US tour in 1976. The band brought along their own stage, in the form of the state of Texas, a buffalo, rattlesnakes, and different other attractions which they managed. Untill today, this tour is the most successful of any rock band in the USA. There will be no animals at Z Z Top's appearance at the Rockpalast-Nacht on April 19th and 20th, 1980. The group will present top quality blues, boogie and rock'n'roll on the stage in the Grugahalle and will also see to it that there's a lot to see. Motto: "Let's boogie till the cows come out" - or: "We want to dance till the cows wake up". The appearance of this 'Little Old Band From Texas' has many special features. For one, this is the very first appearance of this group outside of the USA. For another, Z Z Top has accepted an offer for a TV concert for the first time. Z Z Top is a three-man band from Houston, Texas. It was formed in 1970 by guitarist and singer, Billy Gibbons. Musical models for Z Z Top were, on the one hand, the then successful trios like 'Jimi Hendrix Experience', or 'Cream'; and, on the other hand, black musicians like Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and John Lee Hooker.

Vinly rip! Recorded live & broadcasted via Radio & TV at Rockpalast, Grugahalle, Essen, Germany, 18-04-1980.

BRETT GARSED - Dark Matter (2011)

Brett Garsed is an Australian guitar player. He plays with, among others, John Farnham and T. J. Helmerich and is a former member of the band Nelson. Garsed was featured on Derek Sherinian's debut solo release Planet X (1999) and Planet X's Quantum (2007), and more recently Molecular Heinosity (2010). Dark Matter is Brett Garsed’s first solo release since 2002’s Big Sky, and it’s well worth the wait. The Australian guitarist is well known in the guitar community for his peerless hybrid-picking technique, though associating him solely with this facet of his playing short-changes him greatly. Garsed is a highly versatile player - a seasoned veteran with a well-honed touch who can hang in a variety of styles. “Rock Fusion” is probably the best moniker to describe what Garsed does best, as he has a natural penchant for combining smart lines and chord changes with heavy riffs and tones. With Dark Matter, Garsed further explores this style, though he also displays a progressive rock influence that is more prominent than anything he’s done in the past, save for his work with Derek Sherinian and Virgil Donati.

HAT FITZ AND CARA ROBINSON - Beauty 'n the Beast (2010)

In combining musical forces, Hat Fitz, Queensland's answer to Charley Patton and Belfast Singer/drummer/flutist Cara Robinson recreate the musical mix that created the Delta Blues. They met when Hat was touring Ireland and are now married. 'Beauty and the Beast,' their first album, is an unlikely but successful mix of Irish, Folk and country blues, with pleasingly original versions of Blind Willi Johnson's 'Nobody's Fault but Mine' and Blind Willie McTell's 'Delilah.' Jim Conway plays some great harmonica on a couple of tracks.

Take one heaped teaspoon of Seasick Steve, a liberal helping of Catfish Keith, a pinch of Joni Mitchell. Finish well with a dusting of Blind Willie McTell and put into a studio at gas mark 5. Bake for one week. What you get is an eclectic pie with so many flavours that perhaps shouldn't work together but just do! Both artists have vast experience behind them and have been able to gently influence each other without taking control. The variety of this recording is refreshing and the excitement comes from a sense that this is just the start of what is destined to be a large brood of musical offspring. The blending of pre war hill country and delta blues with early Australian folk and traditional Celtic styles has produced a truly unique sound and has enhanced their reputation as one of the world's most interesting and musically appealing combinations.

TIMO GROSS - Fallen From Grace (2011)

At his energy driven concerts, which he celebrates with an "empathetic and earthy voice" (Bluesmagazine, France), he presents his typical musical interpretation of Blues and Blue moods, between Delta and New Orleans, from Shuffle to Funk. Conscious of tradition – but yet modern, his voice and guitar form an energetic and emotional unity and appear magically linked.

“Fallen From Grace” is 2011 studio album by Timo Gross which offers a lot of astute sounds for blues fans as well as for those who go for rock and pop. Like no one else, he is combining elements from different genres such as rock, funk and soul with emotional vocals and sweeping string play. IAN SIEGAL & THE YOUNGEST SONS - The Skinny (2011)

What would happen if you took the UK’s leading contemporary bluesman and put him in the midst of the music community of north Mississippi? That question was posed at a chance meeting between Siegal’s manager and Cody Dickinson, co-founder and producer of the North Mississippi Allstars. The answer is THE SKINNY, a captivating fusion of Siegal’s song craft with influences of the hill country. The band of musicians backing Siegal was coined The Youngest Sons when it was discovered that each was a youngest son: Garry Burnside (guitar/bass guitar), the youngest son of R L Burnside; Robert Kimbrough (guitar) of Junior Kimbrough; Rodd Bland (drums) of Bobby Blue Bland; and Cody Dickinson (drums/bass/woogie board), the youngest son of producer and pianist, Jim Dickinson. There are also contributions from Alvin Youngblood Hart, Duwayne Burnside and Andre Turner. The album brims with hooks and grooves, and is characterised by Siegal’s superbly crafted and intense lyrics about relationships lost, found, unrequited, cursed by human weakness or simply bedeviled by bad luck. - nugenerecords.com

JOHNNY CASH - The Real... Johnny Cash: The Ultimate Johnny Cash Collection (2011)

John R. "Johnny" Cash (1932 – 2003), A.K.A. "The Man In Black", was an American singer-songwriter, actor, and author, who has been called one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Although he is primarily remembered as a country music artist, his songs and sound spanned many other genres including rockabilly and rock and roll—especially early in his career—as well as blues, folk, and gospel. This crossover appeal led to Cash being inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Late in his career, Cash covered songs by several rock artists.

This set combines six of Johnny Cash's late-'50s and early-'60s LPs for Columbia Records, 1958’s The Fabulous Johnny Cash, 1959’s Hymns and Songs of Our Soil, 1960’s Ride This Train and Now, There Was a Song!, and 1962’s Hymns from the Heart, along with six bonus tracks, including “I Walk the Line” and “Folsom Prison Blues,” from Cash's earlier stay at Sun Records. A lot more was to follow for Cash, but the beginning and the first maturation of his iconic career is presented here. - answers.com

CAROLANNE PEGG - Carolanne (1973)

As a fiddler and vocalist, Carolanne Pegg (then billed as Carole Pegg) was an important part of Mr. Fox, a notable if cultish early-'70s British folk-rock group. On her 1973 self-titled album, however, she simply sounds both out of her element and ill-equipped to carry a record as a solo artist. Her voice is thin and wavering, and the material is often far less folk-oriented than Mr. Fox's, veering toward mainstream early- to mid-'70s singer/songwriting with some country-rock touches and a mystical air. While a song title such as "A Witch's Guide to the Underground" might whet the appetite for something truly hellacious, in the event it turns out to be a prissy tune, sung with all the confidence of a woman stepping onto a frozen pond whose ice may or may not hold. More of her folk roots surface in the dark British melodies of "The Sapphire" and "Fair Fortune's Star"; "Man of War," which sounds like a Sandy Denny song with lousy (and very un-Denny-like) vocals; and the fiddle-driven "Mouse and the Crow." Those are more satisfying than the straight and unmemorably ordinary rock tunes here, but are still way short of outstanding. - allmusic.com

TRACKS:
01. Open the Door 02. A Witch's Guide to the Underground 03. Mouse and the Crow 04. The Sapphire 05. Fair Fortune's Star 06. Clancy's Song 07. The Lady and the Well 08. Wycoller 09. The Lizard 10. Man of War 11. Winter People

ANDY TIMMONS BAND - Andy Timmons Band Plays Sgt. Pepper (2011)

The Beatles “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” is definitely one of the best albums ever released. It has been redone many times by various bands. This re-imagination by guitarist Andy Timmons is a fresh take and done all-instrumental. Andy Timmons is no joke on that guitar and really perfects this album. He also sheds a real amazing new light on the already perfect tracks. This isn’t just an overnight album either supposedly it took two years to complete. Of course the original The Beatles “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” is still the best…this is a very true and honorable cover. Every song on this album is just so strong and vibrant. Supposedly when working on this album, Andy Timmons did it all from memory and never once referenced the original album. Andy’s guitar work is stunning and totally jaw-dropping especially on tracks like “Within You Without You” and “The Benefit of Mr. Kite”. Usually when you have cover albums it is never true to the original but this one tracks along side the original and adds a new level of greatness. What is also very cool as well is that Andy included the track “Strawberry Fields Forever”, which was original meant to be released on “Sgt. Pepper”. That rendition of the song is just breathtaking. If you are a fan of amazing guitar work or Beatles fan this is must. A MUST!

TRACKS:
01. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band 02. With a Little Help From My Friends 03. Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds 04. Getting Better 05. Fixing a Hole 06. She’s Leaving Home 07. Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite! 08. Within You, Without You 09. When I’m Sixty-Four 10. Lovely Rita 11. Good Morning, Good Morning 12. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) 13. A Day In the Life 14. Strawberry Fields Forever

ANNA TERNHEIM - The Night Visitor (2011)

Anna Ternheim is a Swedish singer, songwriter and has got many awards under her belt, reaping them with her debut ‘Somebody Outside’ (2004), ‘Separation Road’ (2006), ‘Halfway to Fivepoints’ (2008 - debut album in USA), ‘Leaving on a Mayday’ (2008). Her songs were also featured in some TV series. The latest addition, ‘The Night Visitor’, has just been freshly released. TERNHEIM’s style apart from the crossover that feels to be between Indie Rock and understated Pop to acoustic, bluesy & folk... at times reminding of JOAN BAEZ minus BAEZ’s pretensions and ultra seriousness, some sensibilities of DIDO on a less poppy appeal. All that remark apart, her vocal is very pleasant and she’s good at what she’s doing, her presence is cool, not too much in your face but pretty much strongly there. Understated classiness and intelligence come to mind too. It’s difficult to get on with your ‘to do list’ because if you’ll listen to this, you’re just gonna want to kick off your shoes, put your feet up and simply chill out. So reserve it for the time you don’t have to do anything and enjoy! Songs to give as an examples - the up-beat-ish ‘Lorelie-Marie’, ‘Ghost Of A Man’, ‘God Don’t Know’ with its whistling and the push for you to join along the refrain. ‘All Shadows’ - good depth added by the drums and in overall, interesting song in this quality release. - reflectionsofdarkness.com

TRACKS:
01. Solitary Move 02. The Longer The Waiting (The Sweeter The Kiss) 03. Lorelie Marie 04. Ghost Of A Man 05. What Remains 06. Bow Your Head 07. Walking Aimlessly 08. God Don't Know 09. Black Light Shines 10. All Shadows 11. Come To Bed 12. Dearest Dear

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - Beacon Theatre, NY - March 12, 2011 (2011) thumbupthumbupthumbup

On March 12 and 13, 1971, the Allman Brothers Band rolled tape at New York's Fillmore East for their third record, a double LP that became their first Top Ten seller and one of the greatest live rock albums ever released, a gold standard of electric-blues ecstasy and improvisation. Forty years later, on March 12th at the Beacon Theater – three nights into their annual New York spring residency – the group celebrated that album, At Fillmore East, by performing it in sequence and its entirety, from "Statesboro Blues" to "Whippin' Post." And that was just the first set. There was a special guest too, right at the opening notes. When guitarist Derek Trucks hit the intro lick to the supercharged arrangement of Blind Willie McTell's"Statesboro Blues," it was not on Trucks' usual red Gibson SG but a gold-topped 1957 Les Paul – one of the late Duane Allman's original guitars. The Beacon resurrection of At Fillmore East was, in one sense, dynamite illusion. The current-day Allmans – singer-organist Gregg Allman and drummers Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, who all played on the record; Derek (Butch's nephew), guitarist Warren Haynes; bassist Oteil Burbridge and percussionist Marc Quinones – inevitably played the album as it was immortalized, not as it happened in real time. The original seven-song track listing jumped back and forth between March 12th and 13th shows; the side-long expansion of Willie Cobbs' "You Don't Love Me" was a composite of versions from both nights. - rollingstone.com

WISHBONE ASH - Elegant Stealth (2011)

"Elegant Stealth" represents a benchmark in the evolution of Wishbone Ash, one of the most influential guitar bands in the history of rock. Signature twin-lead melodies and a powerhouse rhythm section frame 11 new tracks that reflect a diverse realm of styles and moods. Formed in 1969, Wishbone Ash has more than 20 original studio recordings and several live albums to their credit. On "Elegant Stealth", the group coalesces around strong songwriting and serious chops. Founding member Andy Powell handles lead vocals and trades licks with Finland’s guitar wizard Muddy Manninen. Bassist Bob Skeat, a 14-year veteran of the band and in-demand studio musician, sets the pace with Joe Crabtree, one of the best of Britain’s new breed of drummers, having played with Pendragon and David Cross of King Crimson. The band demonstrates its versatility on "Elegant Stealth", from the pop/rocker “Reason to Believe” to the gentler vibe of “Give it Up” to tunes like “Warm Tears” and “Big Issues,” where the band gets to stretch out and flex its musical muscles. Guest artists appearing on the new CD include Deep Purple’s Don Airey, who played Hammond B3 organ on the instrumental “Mud-slick,” and Ireland’s Pat McManus played fiddle on “Can’t Go It Alone,” which he penned specially for Wishbone Ash.

ALICE COOPER - Welcome 2 My Nightmare [Exclusive Limited Edition] (2011)

Welcome 2 My Nightmare is the 26th studio album by Alice Cooper, following his 2008 album Along Came a Spider. The idea for the album came about soon after the thirtieth anniversary of the original Welcome to My Nightmare album, while Cooper was talking with producer Bob Ezrin, who proposed the idea of a sequel to Welcome to My Nightmare. Cooper liked the idea, and decided to recruit previous members of the Alice Cooper band. The concept of the album was described by Cooper as "another nightmare, and this one is even worse than the last one." Cooper said that he had originally intended to make a sequel to his album Along Came a Spider, but decided to make the Nightmare sequel after Ezrin explained that he "wasn't really into it."

The album was completed sometime during early 2011, with Cooper announcing its completion in February 2011 on his radio show, Nights with Alice Cooper. It was first scheduled to be released late in 2011 on Bob Ezrin's Bigger Picture label as part of a deal involved marketing, touring and production work by Bigger Picture for Cooper in the future. The album was then announced as being delayed until some time in 2012 due to Cooper's touring commitments, though it was released on 13 September 2011.

How many musicians would kill to get a peek into Warren Haynes' address book? He has been holding his annual benefit Christmas jam concerts in Asheville, North Carolina since 1988, and each time, the lineup is more impressive than the year before. This one, recorded December 21, 2002 but not released until nearly nine years later, documents his 14th such gig, featuring Robert Randolph, moe., John Hiatt, Bob Weir & Friends, and a closing free-for-all with Haynes' Gov't Mule and guests such as DJ Logic and Widespread Panic's Dave Schools. Haynes lends his talents to about half the tracks on this nearly two-and-a-half-hour, double-disc set as he shares the spotlight with Hiatt, moe., Jerry Joseph, Weir, and others. With Weir around, there's a heavy Dead vibe to much of the music, as moe. even covers Dark Star (sounding arguably better and tighter than vintage Dead) and Weir rolling out the Dead's "Truckin'," "Shakedown Street," and "The Other One" with somewhat surprisingly sprightly results. Since Haynes was touring as a temporary member of that band for a while, the connection is logical. Randolph lights a fire under all that noodling with a propulsive nine-minute take on Slim Harpo's "Shake Your Hips" that just about burns the stage down with its intensity. Bluegrass is usually present at these Haynes gatherings, and for this one, he invites Ashville's Sons of Ralph. The band features some lightning-fast mandolin playing from Don Lewis that will have most listeners Googling the group to learn more about them. John Hiatt delivers inspired versions of some of his better-known songs including a ten-minute romp through "Memphis in the Meantime" (with Haynes sitting in). Having the always stellar Sonny Landreth on slide helps raise the temperature substantially. The final 30 minutes are spent on three Gov't Mule tunes, including a raw cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man," with that group's drummer Artimus Pyle, that closes the concert by paying tribute to Haynes' 70s and Southern rock roots. These shows usually run over eight hours, so even at a hefty 150 minutes, this is just a sampler of the music soiree that night. As with the three previous double-disc packages, the recording is pristine and the live setting adds a sharp edge to every performance. The CD's profits, as well as those from the shows, goes to Habitat for Humanity. That gives the proceedings an even more positive vibe, making this a logical purchase for any American roots rock or Dead fan. - allmusic.com

TONY SPINNER - Down Home Mojo (2011)

Tony Spinner (born June 9, 1963 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri), is an American rock and blues singer and guitarist who toured with Toto from 1999 until their break-up in 2008. Spinner was personally selected by David Paich as a backup guitarist and backing vocalist and would perform lead vocals on the song "Stop Loving You," originally performed by former Toto member Joseph Williams. When Toto reformed in 2010, Spinner was not part of the touring band. In fall 2010, Tony Spinner joined Paul Gilbert on his "Fuzz Universe" European tour.

Awesome 7th studio disc by this superb blues/rock axeslinger from Arkansasfeaturing 13 tracks of excellent, top-shelf, blues-based, soul-powered, authentic, legitretro-70s, strato-strut, heavy guitar rock that rides high on the "Down Home Mojo" boogie train. Keeping it Real and speaking the same world-class, six string language as the guitar greats,Tony Spinner is keeping the "old-school" guitar rock flame alive on the way-kool, righteous"Down Home Mojo" disc. Highly recommended to fans of Hendrix, Trower, Clapton, SRV,Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Tommy Bolin and Brother Spinner's other killer discs. - amazon.com

URIAH HEEP - Come Away Melinda: A Collection Of Classic Uriah Heep Ballads (2011)

Ballads? What ballads? They don't need no stinkin' ballads. Actually, most of these aren't true ballads, which are defined as either romantic/sentimental songs ("Rainbow Demon" darlin'?) or songs that repeat the same melody from stanza to stanza (think of that guy playing the acoustic guitar in Animal House). Uriah Heep did eventually write honest-to-goodness ballads, some of which are featured here: "Your Turn to Remember," "Free Me," and "Come Back to Me." For the most part, though, this is the trippy and mellow side of Heep, likely to please those whose tastes run toward Crosby, Stills & Nash or Barclay James Harvest. The selection is almost all Byron-era material; just two tracks with John Lawton are tacked on at the end. Thus, this functions as a kind of "classic" Heep compilation with an eye toward some of their more sublime but overlooked album tracks. Frankly, Castle has milked the Heep catalog to the point of soreness, so there are plenty of compilations to pick and choose from, the original albums notwithstanding. It's a generous helping at 18 tracks, so you get your money's worth with Come Away Melinda, but for a few dollars more you could buy a double-disc collection of early material like The Best of Uriah Heep or Travellers in Time, both of which strike a better balance between the hard and soft sides of Heep. Again, the digitally remastered sound is excellent (in their defense, Castle has done a marvelous job of remastering Heep's old catalog), so this disc (or someplace just like it) sparkles over the early CDs and vinyl. It's listeners' turn to remember, again. - allmusic.com

01. Come Away Melinda 02. Lady In Black 03. The Park 04. What Should Be Done 05. The Wizard 06. Rainbow Demon 07. Circle Of Hands 08. Rain 09. If I Had The Time 10. Circus 11. Wonderworld 12. The Easy Road 13. Why Did You Go? 14. Your Tirn To Remember 15. Weep In Silence 16. Footprints In The Snow 17. Free Me 18. Come Back To Me

THE BLACK KEYS - El Camino (2011)

El Camino is the seventh studio album by American blues-rock duo The Black Keys. The album was produced by Danger Mouse and the group itself, and it was released on December 6, 2011 on Nonesuch Records. It was preceded by lead single "Lonely Boy", which was released in October. El Camino has received positive reviews from critics since its release.

The Black Keys are an exceptional band that continually release quality material. Many bands and artists over the past ten years have found it increasingly difficult to adapt and grow without losing their original appeal. Auerbach and Carney have found a formula (and producer in Danger Mouse) that works for them. The continuous fruits of that formula are evident in each new release. El Camino is by far the best Black Keys album in the past five years, and possibly their best to date.

MADNESS - A Guided Tour of Madness (2011)

Widely regarded as one of the greatest singles bands of the '80s, the four-disc anthology A Guided Tour of Madness is a chance to hear the U.K.'s biggest-ever Two-Tone band in all their glory, with 70 tracks plucked from their roller coaster, 30-year career. With the exception of "Sweetest Girl," "Sorry," and "The Harder They Come," every one of their 34 singles make the cut, from their 1979 homage to reggae legend Prince Buster, "The Prince," to 2009's "Forever Young" which, compiled in chronological order, allows fans to chart their journey from cheeky teenage "nutty boys" to elder statesmen of British ska-pop. Of course, their most familiar material, from their sole U.K. chart-topper "House of Fun" to their cover of Labi Siffre's "It Must Be Love," to their biggest U.S. hit, "Our House," is likely to inspire mass singalongs from casual fans. But as its lengthy track list sests, this comprehensive collection also showcases what else they had to offer. Indeed, the band might not have looked as though they were taking themselves too seriously, but with songs which sensitively tackled issues such as the IRA ("Michael Caine"), the Falklands War ("Blue Skinned Beast"), and immigration ("Prospects"), they offered a lot more substance than they were given credit for, while 1999 comeback single "Lovestruck" (their first Top Ten hit in 16 years), their 2000s covers of the Kinks' "Lola" and the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hanging On," and the four tracks from 2009's well-received The Liberty of Norton Folgate prove that the band haven't been resting on their laurels. While most Madness fans will already own the majority of tracks here, there are also a few obscurities thrown into the mix, from early B-sides such as "All I Knew" and "Mistakes" (apparently the first song the band ever wrote) to "Sarah's Song," a number from their Our House musical, and the previously unreleased "Le Grand Pantalon," and the playful, Gallic waltz-tinged rendition of their signature hit "Baggy Trousers," which shows their tongue-in-cheek humor remains firmly intact. A cut above most hastily assembled retrospectives, A Guided Tour of Madness is a cleverly selected affair which should satisfy anyone wishing to investigate more than their more ubiquitous commercial hits. - allmusic.com

CHRIS REA - The Journey 1978 - 2009 (2011)

British singer and guitarist Chris Rea has enjoyed a run of popularity in Europe during the late '80s and early '90s after almost a decade of previous recording. Rea started out performing with a local group called Magdalene, taking David Coverdale's place; the band won a national talent contest in 1975 as the Beautiful Losers, but still failed to get a record contract. Rea left the band and recorded the album Whatever Happened to Benny Santini?, which alluded to a discarded stage name, which went gold on the strength of the U.S. Top 20 hit "Fool (If You Think It's Over)." Rea was not heard from again in the U.S. for some time, concentrating his efforts on his main fan base of Europe. A compilation of tracks from Rea's '80s albums, New Light Through Old Windows, was released in 1988 and sold well in the U.K. and Europe and charted in the U.S. Rea followed it up with the critically acclaimed The Road to Hell, which many regarded as his best album. It and its follow-up, Auberge, went to the top of the U.K. album charts, but did not prove as successful in the U.S., where he has failed to chart with his subsequent releases. He released his most ambitious project in 2005, an eleven-album, 130-track box set of all new material inspired by the blues and his own paintings called Blue Guitars.

2011 two CD collection from the British singer, songwriter and guitarist. Chris Rea has enjoyed a massively successful music career for over 30 years now. The Journey 1978-2009 includes such enduring Rea's smash hits as 'The Road To Hell', 'Let's Dance', 'On The Beach', 'Fool (If You Think It's Over)' and 'Auberge'. Also includes choice album tracks and rarities such as 'Saudade', his soulful tribute to the late Formula One racer Ayrton Senna. Music Club Deluxe.

THERESA BLUE - Carolina Blues (2011)

Theresa Lindstrom AKA Theresa Blue signed with Tom Cat Records USA in 2005. Theresa was employed to write 3 songs for the movie “Midnight to morning Baby” filmed in Wilmington. Soon after 2 of her songs were used in the movie “Southern Redemption”. Her next accomplishment was writing 6 of the songs on the “Sprits Of the Lumbee” CD distributed by Andersons and sold at Wal-Mart. In 2008 Theresa had 5 cuts on the CD “Investors Choice”. Lindstrom didn’t have the luxury of dreaming big. She had to find the small gigs so she could pay the rent. Of course “hitting it big” is a relative term in Lindstrom’s case. She specializes in a pan-roots style, borrowing as much from the Mississippi Delta as the Appalachian Mountains. But there is always the sense with Lindstrom that success doesn’t have to be defined in big terms. There’s a work ethic that drives her artistry and keeps her honest

On September 11, 2011 she released her current CD “Carolina Blues”. The next month it was voted the best produced Blues CD of 2011 by the Cape Fear Blues Society. Carolina Blues is considered one of the top contenders for the IBC (International Blues Challenge) award in Memphis this Feb.

LAURA NYRO - Original Album Classics (2010)

Laura Nyro (1947 – 1997) was an American songwriter, singer, and pianist. She achieved considerable critical acclaim with her own recordings, particularly the albums Eli and the Thirteenth Confession and New York Tendaberry, and had commercial success with artists such as Barbra Streisand and The 5th Dimension recording her songs. Her style was a hybrid of Brill Building-style New York pop, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, show tunes, rock and soul. Through the years Laura’s albums have reflected various musical explorations from simple, down-home singing, to wild orchestrations resembling abstract art. Robert Hilburn of The Los Angeles Times, wrote about Laura, “Her contributions have paved the way for the rise of the urban female singer-songwriter.” And Jon Pareles amplified this in The New York Times: “If not for Laura Nyro the music of Rickie Lee Jones, Joni Mitchell, and Teena Marie might have been very different. When she released her first album in 1966, Nyro was a nineteen-year old who linked high flown poetry to the ecstatic emotions of soul music, and her singing mixed the pure tones of a soprano with the throbs and swoops of gospel and jazz.”

This five-disc box set collects five of the late singer and songwriter Laura Nyro's 1960s and 1970s albums on CD in mini-LP sleeves, including Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, New York Tendaberry, Christmas and the Beads of Sweat, Gonna Take a Miracle, and Smile, which means it collects the essential heart of her impressive legacy.

Hubert Sumlin was born in Mississippi, raised in Arkansas and moved to Chicago to play with Howlin' Wolf. After Wolf's death in 1976, Sumlin continued to play with the rest of Wolf's band under the name The Wolf Gang. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2002 and had a lung removed. MICHAEL ZANDER - Down To The Wire (2011)

"British guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was my first guitar Hero & I still dig his playing to this day. In the mid eighties I came across Eric Johnson & Lee Ritenour. Those two were my main influences. The versatility of Tommy Emmanuel is another big influence. I am a big fan of Flamenco, Blues & Country music in general. After travelling the southern United States so many times I developed a huge interest in American Blues Music.

We have a new album out entitled, “Down To The Wire“. What’s it all about? I call it "American vibes melt into traditional shrimp-rock-blues". Most of the songs were written down in Florida where my parents live part-time. That’s why I call it shrimp-rock blues. And I like the beach & shrimp! The last couple of years I really dig the old traditional delta blues from the 30’s and some of the basic elements of the songs were further developed out of simple bluesy dobro slide ideas." - Michael Zander (michaelzander.com)

JOHN LENNON - Acoustic (2004)

Released in conjunction with the reissue of John Lennon's 1975 covers album "Rock'n'Roll", the "Acoustic" compilation is a new collection that spotlights the quiet, ballad-oriented side of Lennon's work. Though Lennon is celebrated for songs whose forward-looking production style changed the course of popular music, "Acoustic" serves to remind listeners that he was, first and foremost, simply a great songwriter, and that his compositions are equally as effective when stripped down to the simplest possible arrangement. Toward that end, this collection culls material from a variety of sources, including demos and concert recordings, some of which are previously unreleased and will be manna to Beatles collectors. "Acoustic" spans both time and themes, ranging from great early tracks such as the bluesy "Well Well Well" to the later, contemplative "Watching the Wheels," which would appear in finished form on what would sadly become Lennon's swan song, "Double Fantasy". Includes seven previously unreleased tracks. - cduniverse.com

DAVID GOGO - Soul-Bender (2011)

David Gogo is an extremely hard working Canadian bluesman with a laundry list of accolades for his expert musical craft. His latest album, “Soul Bender”, is an satisfying mix of electric blues, rock, and soul styles set to a combination of originals and some interesting cover choices. The first track, “Please Find My Baby,” originally by Elmore James is deftly reminiscent of ZZ Top’s cover of James’ “Dust My Broom” — with a twist. The slide guitar burns a hole through the speakers, and the addition of Steve Marriner’s skilled piano and harmonica adds a layer of depth. One noteworthy track can be found in “The Way You Make Me Feel”. Those skeptical of seeing a Michael Jackson cover on a blues album will be pleasantly surprised to find some fantastic B.B. King style licks, a B3 backing, horn section and shuffle beat. It’s certainly a challenge for an artist to “own” a song made famous by the king of pop, but David accomplishes it in fine form. Gogo’s version of “I Found A Love” has a strong southern rock & soul sound, with an echoing guitar and soul-dripping vocals. - americanbluesscene.com

SAVOY BROWN - Voodoo Moon (2011)

Savoy Brown, originally known as the Savoy Brown Blues Band, are a British blues rock band, formed in 1965, in Battersea, South West London. Part of the late 1960s blues rock movement, Savoy Brown never achieved as much success in their homeland as they did in the United States, where they promoted their albums with non-stop touring.

Voodoo Moon speaks clearly to this band s history, and the future of what great artists can do. Kim Simmonds woodsheds like a journeyman, always reaching for higher ground. He can be found in his own backyard White Cottage studio most every morning when Savoy Brown is not on the road. Simmonds is constantly writing songs and working on his playing, both electric and acoustic. He has taken to solo performances since 1997, which is one the greatest of artistic challenges. He has also been painting since 2001, which gives him another creative challenge. But most of all, Simmonds challenges himself to continually be a living artist! - amazon.com

SEASICK STEVE - Walkin Man: The Best Of Seasick Steve (2011)

Seasick Steve is back with a collection of his best songs, covering his career from his first album release, up to this year’s release, "You Can’t Teach an Old Dog New Tricks". To those who haven’t been seduced by this ex-hobo playing songs about his life on the road on his Three-String Trance Wonder, this is the perfect introduction. It has been put together with the listener in mind: it is not a simple chronological effort just thrown together; each track has been carefully selected to compliment the following selection. Starting off with the classic, bluesy "Dog House Boogie" which launched him as a star, the album moves on to Steve rocking out with the Level Devils on "Cheap" and showing off his Diddley Bo skills on the aptly titled "Diddley Bo". Steve’s greatest gift is his ability to tell the different stories of his life through his songs. When you are listening to him playing slide and singing about drinking "Thunderbird", you do not feel like it is contrived. His honesty about life and its hardship is refreshing. He also shows his versatility by bringing out the acoustic guitar and exploring his softer side with the romantic "Walkin' Man" and sorrowful "Xmas Prison Blues".

TRACKS:
01. Dog House Boogie 02. Cheap 03. I Started out with Nothin' 04. Diddley Bo 05. Thunderbird 06. Happy Man 07. Cut my Wings 08. Treasures 09. St Louis Slim 10. 8 - Ball 11. 02. I Should Have Known It
03. Sweet William
04. Jefferson Jericho Blues
05. First Flash of Freedom

Tom Petty and second in command Mike Cambell made sure that the fans got a full helping of all the Hearbreakers hits, playing multiple evenings in a number of the venues on the tour list, but with such an extensive catalog at their disposal, fans were treated to most of the current album. And that’s what is presented here on Kiss My Amps, a one album slice, offering seven choice cuts. The album was limited to 5000 copies for Record Store Day, released on 25 November in the US. As good as the studio version of Mojo is, the Heartbreakers are always at their best on the stage. At 61, Petty and company show no signs of slowing down. Mixed by long time Petty engineer Ryan Ulyate and mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, this record does a spectacular job at capturing this band at it’s best.

KATHY McCORD - New Jersey To Woodstock (2010)

Kathy McCord released a lone self-titled LP in 1970, the first release from Creed Taylor’s CTI Records, and it was a truly odd and unique album featuring a kind of folk-rock acid jazz groove that later made it a highly sought-after rarity for collectors. The album was recorded and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder at his Englewood Cliffs, NJ, studio on November 18, 19, 20, and 24, and December 2, 1969, and featured flute by Hubert Laws, organ by Paul Harris, and arrangements by Don Sebesky. McCord’s dreamy singing approach made the whole project feel like it was recorded in San Francisco with everyone wearing flowers in their hair, but the end result was oddly compelling and absolutely unforgettable. The LP sold poorly and copies were traded for years on the rarities market. A limited-edition CD version was issued in Japan in the 1990s. Then in 2010 Big Beat UK finally packaged the LP with some scattered tracks McCord recorded for the Rainy Day label in 1968, plus a whole second disc of sides she cut in the 1970s but never released, as the double-disc set New Jersey to Woodstock. - allmusic.com

RANDY CRAWFORD - The Best Of Randy Crawford (2011)

Randy Crawford's initial notoriety came from her fiery vocal on "Street Life," a 1979 song matching her with the Crusaders that was included on the soundtrack for Burt Reynolds' film Sharky's Machine. Crawford was born in Macon and grew up in Cincinnati; she worked in clubs as a teen, accompanied by her father. Crawford was lead vocalist in a group that included bassist Bootsy Collins before touring as George Benson's opening act in 1972. Cannonball Adderley invited her to sing on his LP Big Man. Crawford recorded "Don't Get Caught in Love's Triangle," a song produced by Johnny Bristol, during a short stay on the label. She soon moved to Warner Bros., and after "Street Life," recorded and toured Europe with the Crusaders. Crawford was tabbed Most Outstanding Performer at the 1980 Tokyo Music Festival. She remained with Warner Bros. through the '80s and early '90s, but was unable to score either a big R&B hit or major crossover smash, despite having one of the most readily identifiable voices and distinctive approaches of any contemporary female vocalist. She's been more successful overseas, particularly in England, where such singles as "Knocking on Heaven's Door," "Rainy Night in Georgia," and "Last Night at Danceland" have gotten universal acclaim. ~ All Music Guide

HURTSMILE - Hurtsmile (2011)

Hurtsmile is a band fronted by Extreme singer Gary Cherone. Cherone started the project in 2007 with his brother Mark. Some demos were released on the internet, but plans for an album were put on hold once plans for the eventual Extreme reunion emerged. After the release of Saudades de Rock and the subsequent 2009 tour, Bettencourt went on tour with Rihanna, putting Extreme on hiatus and giving time for Cherone to return to the Hurtsmile project. The album was then recorded and released January 2011 in Europe and February 2011 in the US. Besides brothers Gary and Mark Cherone, who also play together in Slip Kid, a The Who tribute band, the band features Joe Pessia, who plays with Tantric and was the bassist for Bettencourt's DramaGods and drummer Dana Spellman, who was a student of Extreme's former drummer Mike Mangini. - wikipedia

JOOLS HOLLAND & HIS RHYTHM & BLUES ORCHESTRA - Jools Holland & Friends (2011)

Depending on who you talk to, the irrepressible Jools Holland is best known as a blisteringly energetic piano-pounding performer of boogie-woogie, jazz, and R&B; or as the keyboard-wizard sideman to one of the great new wave pop bands of the '70s and '80s; or as one of the U.K.'s most popular television presenters. And while any one of these accomplishments would be enough for most people, Jools Holland has managed to be all those things in his remarkable showbiz career -- a career that's seen him work with almost everybody who was anybody on the U.K. or U.S. music scene from the late '70s onward.

CHRIS NORMAN - Time Traveller (2011)

Chris Norman is an English soft rock singer. Norman was the lead singer of Smokie, an English glam rock band from Bradford, which found success in Europe in the 1970s.

With „Time Traveller“ Norman strikes a new path and makes a journey through the musical past. On “Time Traveller” Norman reinterpreted his personal most loved songs in his unique way. The title “Time Traveller” is reflecting this idea: genre overlapping songs from different times of the rock and pop history.

While choosing the songs, Norman had a clear vision: “I wanted to cover songs from different musical eras, not only old classics, but also current tracks. My main criterion during the choice of songs was: ’Do I love that song?’ and the songs I’ve chosen are all songs that I love.”

TRACKS:
01. Get It On (T-Rex) 02. Country Girl (Primal Scream) 03. Back For Good (Take That) 04. Be My Baby (Ronettes) 05. Chasing Cars (Snow Patrol) 06. Morning Dew (Tim Rose) 07. Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond) 08. Homeward Bound (Simon & Garfunkel) 09. Moonlight Shadow (Mike Oldfield) 10. I Can’t Dance (Genesis) 11. 19th Nervous Breakdown (Rolling Stones) 12. Wake Me Up When September Ends (Green Day)
