CHARLIE HADEN FAMILY & FRIENDS - Rambling Boy (2008)

Charlie Haden is a key figure in modern jazz, a bassist and composer whose work as both sideman and leader is universally respected. His son, Josh Haden, leads the indie pop band Spain, and daughters Petra, Tanya, and Rachel have performed together as the Haden Triplets, maintain individual solo careers, and have been in bands ranging from That Dog and the Rentals to Silversun Pickups and the Decemberists. But Charlie Haden got his start in country music: his parents and older siblings were the Haden Family, a popular country group of the 1930s and '40s, and he made his public debut at the age of two, singing "Oh Shenandoah" on the radio in 1939. That performance appears on RAMBLING BOY, a loving tribute to traditional country music and Haden's own roots. Along with all four of his children (and Tanya Haden's husband, actor Jack Black, who sings a rousing "Old Joe Clark"), guests include Elvis Costello, Dan Tyminski, Vince Gill, Rosanne Cash, Ruth Cameron, Pat Metheny, Bruce Hornsby, and Ricky Skaggs. The songs include country standards and original material like Josh Haden's "Spiritual" (previously recorded by Johnny Cash) and the politically minded "Is This America? (Katrina 2005)." - cduniverse.com

TOM FOGERTY

DISCOGRAPHY:
- Tom Fogerty - 1972
- Excalibur - 1972
- Zephyr National - 1974
- Myopia - 1974
- Deal It Out - 1981
- Precious Gems - 1984
- Sidekicks [with Randy Oda] - released posthumously in 1992

Thomas Richard "Tom" Fogerty (1941 – 1990) was an American musician, best known as the rhythm guitarist in Creedence Clearwater Revival and the elder brother of John Fogerty, lead singer and lead guitarist in that band.

Fogerty was born in Berkeley, California. He began singing rock and roll in high school, just as his brother, John Fogerty did. He and his brother had separate groups. Tom's band, Spider Webb and the Insects (which featured Jeremy Levine of the Seeds), signed a recording contract with Del-Fi Records but broke up in 1959 before releasing any records. John's band, The Blue Velvets, began backing Tom, and eventually Tom joined John's band, and the group recorded three singles for Orchestra Records in 1961 and 1962, with Tom as lead vocalist. In the mid 1960s, the group was called The Golliwogs and recorded with Fantasy Records, with Tom and John sharing lead vocal duties. By 1968 the band was renamed Creedence Clearwater Revival, when John had become full-time lead singer and primary songwriter. During the few years of the life of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Tom sang backing vocals and wrote songs, but only one of his songs ("Walk on the Water") was recorded. This lack of opportunity, along with festering, long-standing animosity with his brother, led him to leave the band in 1971. After leaving the band, Fogerty began performing and recording as a solo artist. His relationship with his brother John remained strained. Tom was bitter at having his contributions overlooked. In the pre-CCR days, Tom had been singer, songwriter, and, generally, manager of the act.

BRIAN AUGER - The Mod Years 1965 - 1969 (2011)

The twenty-one tracks on this compilation of odds and ends from the '60s don't show up on Auger's regular 1960s albums (both with and without Julie Driscoll). As the title infers, Auger's early recordings were in a more straight-ahead R&B-rock vein than the jazzier and experimental ones he branched into on his albums, although you can certainly hear a good deal of Jimmy Smith-style playing on these cuts. The disc starts off with half a dozen 1967-68 items that are most likely from non-LP singles credited to Driscoll, Auger, and the Trinity (the liner notes are resolutely unhelpful in this respect), with Julie Driscoll singing on all but one. These are probably the most interesting, progressive elements on the compilation, including covers of Bob Dylan's "This Wheel's on Fire" and "I Am a Lonesome Hobo," David Ackles' "Road to Cairo," and a strong moody original by bassist David Ambrose, "As She Knows" (on which Auger takes vocals). The next five tracks have the most mysterious origins of any of the music on the album, being cut sometime between June 1965 and April 1967, and sounding like good demo showcases for Auger's forceful soul-jazz organ (particularly on the covers of "Green Onions" and Jimmy McGriff's "Kiko"). When he sings as well, the results are less impressive. Wrapping matters up are the nine tracks recorded in the mid-1960s by the Steampacket (with Driscoll, Long John Baldry, and Rod Stewart sharing vocals). Competent, but not remarkable, blue-eyed British soul, the Steampacket material has been floating around on various reissue packages for decades. Devoted Augerites will thus most likely be interested in the other songs, which tie up some of the most pop-oriented outings of his career and are generally pretty fair, though not outstanding.

Cult rock hero Auger's complete singles, B-sides & rare tracks from 1965-69, with and without his group The Trinity and Julie Driscoll. 21 tracks, all digitally remastered.

THE TRAVELING WILBURYS - The True History Of The Traveling Wilburys (2007)

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. - amazon.com

BUDDY GUY - Buddy And The Juniors (1970) [Reissued 2011]

The historical details surrounding the recording session that became Buddy & the Juniors are almost as entertaining - and oddly satisfying - as the music itself. Released on Blue Thumb in 1970 on multi-colored wax, this session, were it not for a very real economic necessity due to Buddy Guy's feud with Vanguard Records, would never have happened. According to producer Michael Cuscuna's liner notes on the CD reissue, Vanguard wouldn't pick up the tab for Guy to fly to New York to mix an album he'd cut with Junior Mance and Gary Bartz - also produced by Cuscuna. Being an ever-enterprising genius, Cuscuna pitched the idea for a recording between Guy, Mance, and Junior Wells to Blue Thumb label boss Bob Krasnow; he jumped. The all-acoustic Buddy & the Juniors was recorded on December 18 of 1969, and on December 19 they mixed this album and the Vanguard date! While an acoustic pairing between Guy and Wells is a natural one, adding jazz pianist Mance -- a Chicago native whose early influences were the boogie-woogie recordings of Meade "Lux" Lewis and Albert Ammons - to the mix was risky in terms of interpersonal dynamics, but in retrospect, proved a brilliant idea. The proceedings are informal and raw with plenty of fireworks. The first two tracks - "Talkin' 'Bout Women Obviously" and "Riffin' [aka A Motif Is Just a Riff]" - were the last two recorded. They're blazing, hairy, on-the-spot improvisational duets between Wells and Guy: the former offers lyrics in a back-and-forth extemporaneous style; the latter develops in intensity as it goes on. The playing by Guy and Wells is inspirational. "Buddy's Blues," the first interplay of the trio, has Mance digging deeply into the Otis Spann tradition, just rolling inside it, accenting lines, punching chords, and offering beautiful tags to Wells' harmonica lines. Wells' vocal on "(I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man" meets Guy's six-string head-on, with Mance comping and popping a melodic fill underneath each sung phrase. He introduces "Five Long Years" as a piano blues that gets countered in exponential grit by Guy's vocal and Wells' punchy harp; he shuffles, fills, trills, and blows straight at the the keyboard, creating a forceful gale of dialogue. On the slippery boogie-woogie set closer, Wells' "Ain't No Need," the listener grasps the deep communication of this trio. Given how earthy, informal, and joyful this acoustic session is, it conveys everything right about Chicago blues. - allmusic.com

Mason Williams reached his peak in the late 1960s. A humorous scriptwriter and virtuosic acoustic guitar player and composer, Williams reached the top of the hit parade in 1968 with his classical folk guitar instrumental, "Classical Gas." T-BONE BURNETT - Proof Through The Night & The Complete Trap Door (2007)

Mail-order firm Rhino Handmade collects T-Bone Burnett's 1982-1984 recordings for Warner Bros. Records on this limited-edition, two-CD set, which contains Burnett's six-song EP, Trap Door (originally released in August 1982); his third full-length solo LP, Proof Through the Night (August 1983); and a second six-song EP, Behind the Trap Door (released by the U.K.'s Demon Records in 1984 and making its first U.S. appearance here). Burnett quickly betrays the influence of Bob Dylan, with whom he toured in the Rolling Thunder Revue, both in his nasal tenor (which is distinguishable from Dylan's in that Burnett employs far more conventional phrasing) and in his lyrics, which often take the form of story-songs written in a seemingly free-associative manner, such that, while they seem like sardonic parables, their actual meanings are murky if not non-existent.

Limited edition (limited to 5000 copies) two CD set from the singer/songwriter and producer. Disc One features the entire Proof Through The Night album (1983) plus one bonus track ('Be Careful Of Stones That You Throw') while Disc Two contains the six track Trap Door EP (1982) and all six songs from the Behind The Trap Door EP (1984). 24 songs total. HANS THEESSINK - Homecooking (2011)

We've already had an American in Paris, but a Dutchman in Vienna? And one who has dedicated himself, body and soul, to American blues and roots music? Okay, Hans Theessink (pronounced Tay-sink) did not pick the easiest way to do this, but he has done so with a certain degree of single-mindedness. Like others of his generation, in the early 1960‘s a love of the Blues took hold of the man whom Bo Diddley described as "one helluva guitar player", and it has not let go since. Above all, the country blues with its earthy and heartfelt sound impressed Hans Theessink and played a major role in his development as a musician. His roots are unmistakenly in the blues, but has also been influenced by countless other aspects of roots music. This musical variety has become a trademark of Hans Theessink, who as a songwriter has succeeded in building bridges to the present in addressing issues which reflect the reality of the here and now. Hans is probably Europe's bluesexport Nr.1 - one of the top blues and roots musicians worldwide who has entertained audiences around the globe during a musical career that spans over more than 35 years. The world's leading bluespaper - US magazine Blues Revue wrote: "Hans Theessink is an international blues treasure. He is one of the world's pre-eminent country pickers and his warm baritone expresses blues". - theessink.com

THE ROLLING STONES - Some Girls: Live In Texas '78 (2011)

No offense to Ron Wood, but there’s little denying that The Rolling Stones crossed an unfortunate threshold when they lost Mick Taylor in 1974. Heavy drugs, superstardom, and a bloated reputation for hedonism started taking the place of genuine inspiration. If Goat’s Head Soup and It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll displayed a definite decline in quality from the Exile on Main Street high-point, 1976’s Black and Blue was The Stones at their most desperate, flailing through boring jams and pathetic grasps at trendiness. The sloganeering “Hot Stuff” alone is evidence that the once threatening Rolling Stones had gotten kind of sad. The exploding punk movement of the following year (“No Beatles, Elvis, or The Rolling Stones in 1977!”) didn’t make them seem any more relevant, yet Jagger’s penchant for trend hopping meant his band was going to incorporate those now sounds into their music whether they liked it or not. Surprisingly, the experiment wasn’t a total failure, and 1978’s Some Girls is regularly cited as The Stones’ last consistently great album of all-new material. After the directionless Black and Blue, Some Girls found them making a calculated effort to write well-realized songs and recapture the most celebrated and condemned aspects of the now-mythic Stones persona: their casual offensiveness and misogyny, their “fuck you” humor, their willingness to explore transgressive topics, as well as their soulfulness and lean muscle.

Recorded live, 18 July 1978, Fort Worth, Texas

BRIAN WILSON AND VAN DYKE PARKS - Orange Crate Art (1995)

Orange Crate Art is a 1995 album by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks released on Warner Bros. Records, where Parks has been contracted since 1967. Nearly 30 years after their collaboration on the ill-fated Smile project, Wilson and Parks teamed up again for this Orange Crate Art, The album's title refers to the sun-drenched, idealized paintings that grace wooden fruit crates, and its theme is a nostalgic view of the history of California. Though billed and anticipated as a full collaboration, the album is devoted to Parks' compositions, and features his typical dense wordplay and orchestrations. Wilson for his part contributes only the vocals and vocal arrangements. Parks reported that despite his invitation, Wilson had declined to contribute any music to the project. Given the history of its principals, the album came with high expectations, but upon release it received mixed critical reviews and had lackluster sales, failing even to chart.

K.D. LANG AND THE SISS BOOM BANG - Sing It Loud (2011)

2011 album from the award-winning vocalist and her new band Siss Boom Bang. Produced by lang and Joe Pisapia, this collection of songs reflects the organic, collaborative nature of the sessions, which took place at Pisapia's Middletree Studios in Nashville. Many of the songs were recorded live in the studio and that energy is palpable. The lead single "I Confess" is one of three songs lang penned with keyboardist Daniel Clarke and Joshua Grange, who plays baritone guitar and dobro. In addition to the original material, Sing it Loud includes a striking version of Talking Heads' "Heaven." Pisapia, who plays numerous instruments and serves as the band's musical director, contributed the title track and co-wrote five songs with lang. Bassist Lex Price (Mindy Smith, Peter Bradley Adams) and drummer/percussionist Fred Eltringham (The Wallflowers) complete the lineup.

k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang’s "Sing it Loud" is lang's first record made entirely with a band of her own since the pair of albums with the Reclines that launched her career over 20 years ago. "The big, beautiful voice of k.d. lang swoops, purrs and soars" on the album, says the Los Angeles Times. USA Today says it "nods to lang's alt-country roots while reinforcing her reputation as a singer of genre-defying dexterity and beauty." The Ottawa Citizen calls it "a torch-and-twangtinged stunner."

MORIARTY

Moriarty is made up of five artists of French, American, and Swiss origin. The members were mainly born in France to American parents. The group was named Moriarty in reference to Dean Moriarty, the hero of On the Road by Jack Kerouac. Initially, the group consisted of eight members: singer Charlene Dupuy, drummer Médéric de Vanssay, and saxophonist Davide Woods have since left the group. Rosemary Standley joined in 1999. Moriarty went from performing traditional blues to rock'n'roll. Successive departures from the group reduced them to five members (Rosemary, Arthur, Thomas, Charles and Stephan), and forced them to play acoustically. This radical change opened up new musical territories for the band, giving them greater freedom in sound experimentation, and allowing them straightforward, stripped-down performances in places such as a prison in Normandy, a mental institution in central France, a ruined castle in Tuscany, and the streets of Paris and Dublin

2007 - Gee Whiz But This Is A Lonesome Town [2009, Limited Edition]
Co-produced by theater directors Jerome Deschamps and Macha Makeieff, Gee Whiz But This Is a Lonesome Town is the first album from French-American collective Moriarty. Named after the central character in Jack Kerouac's On the Road, Moriarty's their 2007 LP, released 12 years after they originally formed, combines traditional rock & roll, Irish folk, and country-blues with unorthodox sounds from the likes of typewriters, hotel bells, and washboards. Influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash, the inventive debut includes the single "Jimmy" and "Private Lily." "It all happened on a friday. It was a clear crystal day, may day, fire day. We were there and then she came just like a serendipity. She was a Parisian Diva and we were her three agitated dreamers. At four o' clock in the morning we all laid on our backs on our bed and we started singing a song for YOU to sing when we're gone." - cduniverse.com

2011 - The Missing Room
Perhaps inspired by the Jack Kerouac novel, On the Road, they took their name from, French-American five-piece Moriarty tested the 13 songs on their second studio album, The Missing Room, while touring the world before committing them to record, resulting in a much more expansive and electric-based sound than their acoustic-heavy debut, Gee Whiz But This Is a Lonesome Town. Produced by drummer Vincent Talpaert, the first release through their own Air Rytmo label continues to mirror their bohemian and nomadic lifestyle, blending Americana with Irish country-blues and French folk-pop, and includes the lead single, "Isabella." - allmusic.com

STEVE HOWE - Homebrew 1, 2, 3, 4 (1996 / 2000)

This is a collection of Steve Howe demos mostly from the late eighties and early nineties with a few older songs tossed in. Much of this album is repetitive, as many of the tracks can be found on "Not Necessarily Acoustic: (although different versions)."At The Full Moon" and "Never Stop Learning" are early versions of ABWH's "Brother Of Mine." "Red And White" became "Birthright". "More About You" is an early form of a section of "Quartet." "Rare Birds" became "Vultures." "Big Love" mixed with his Turbulence song "Sensitive Chaos" became "I Would Have Waited Forever," (this track is the same one found on the bootleg release "We Make Believe." "Barren Land" has sections of "Order Of The Universe." The big surprise, "For This Moment" is a section of "The Revealing Science Of God," although the quality of this track is rough. WOLF MAIL - Solid Ground (2009)

If ever there were a blues/rock artist for the world, it is Canadian born and California based guitarist Wolf Mail. Mail, who began his world tour in his teens with Ted Nugent, continues today as he travels throughout North America, Europe, and currently Australia in support of his debut solo release "Solid Ground". This is a very well named CD, as Mail's work is indeed consistently solid from start to finish in every category. His vocals also unique sounding, and the sum product of all of this is a sound that is both somewhat familiar and yet very much original. Mail, like the excellent Australian guitarist Mal Eastick, is a very polished player, and his work tends to demonstrate more of the "beauty" side of blues/rock guitar, as opposed the "beast" so prominent in more aggressive styles. Mail's guitar work bears the unmistakable marks of the normal SRV/Hendrix/Clapton influences. However, I pay him the ultimate compliment by saying that, though he has obviously been influenced by the normal guitar gods, he bears a striking resemblance to none of them, as his sound is strictly Wolf Mail. - cduniverse.com

FREE - Live! (1971)

"Free Live!" was the fifth album by English rock band Free, and their first (and to date only official) live album. It was rush-released by Island Records to commemorate the band, who had broken up in April 1971. Possibly because of the publicity caused by their breakup (which had also earned them a successful parting single "My Brother Jake" that same month) the album was a hit, reaching #4 in the UK album charts. It fared less well in the United States however, reaching only #89. The album was recorded from gigs played in the UK locations of Sunderland and Croydon, both places where Free had substantial followings, in January and September 1970. Engineer Andy Johns could only use two tracks from the Sunderland gig ("The Hunter" and "All Right Now"), but used crowd noise from it frequently to create seamless links between tracks. With increased re-mastering technology available it has been possible to make others ready for the CD reissue, along with some alternate takes of tracks recorded at the second of the two Croydon sessions that were recorded. Many of the tracks on the album are from their debut Tons of Sobs, as that album's rock-oriented ethos and low production values made its material ideal for performing live. - wikipedia

JANIS JOPLIN - Janis (1993)

Janis Lyn Joplin (1943 – 1970) was an American singer, songwriter, painter, dancer and music arranger. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Joplin number 46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004, and number 28 on its 2008 list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

"Janis" is a compilation album by Janis Joplin, released in 1993. The album features a broad overview of her career from her very first recording in December 1962, to the last songs she did during the sessions for Pearl just a few days before her death in October 1970.

LANCE LOPEZ - Handmade Music (2011)

The album title promises pure Handmade Music and Texas based Lance Lopez is keeping his word with all the ten blues rock tracks (twelve tracks on the limited edition MIG 20050) But the guitarist widens the scope on the genre itself. The songs were recorded at the famous Ardent Studios in Memphis Tennessee where Led Zeppelin and ZZ Top have also been working before. For the process of recording Lance Lopez was able to draw back on the experience and the help of Jim Gaines.

"Handmade Music" has more of a good old rockin' vibe and we had a lot of fun cutting the tracks. It's also some of the best guitar tones I've ever recorded! The band sounds amazing on the new record as well, Bass player Chris Gipson played some amazing bass lines and sings background vocals on a couple of cuts as well. Drummer Jimmy Dereta played with amazing power and force, the engineers at Ardent were saying they haven't gotten drum sounds there that good in a long time! We have been playing a lot of the material the last 6 months but after getting in the studio with Jim, who took and shaped and molded the songs even more, they are almost like completely new songs. We will be playing a majority of the material live now so if people come to a show they will be able to hear a lot of it firsthand!"

THE BYRDS - (Untitled) & (Unissued) (2000)

The two-CD set Untitled/Unissued contains the Byrds' 1970 Untitled album (originally a double LP) on disc one, and 14 previously unissued alternate versions, studio recordings, and live performances on disc two. This was not the Byrds' most exciting era, but a lot of extra material existed, and Untitled was going to be reissued either way. Untitled itself was one of the Byrds' better late efforts, with an album of live material (built around updates of their most famous tunes) sharing space with uneven new studio recordings in the expected country/folk-rock mode, highlighted by "Chestnut Mare" and "Just a Season." Listeners will be most interested in this expanded reissue for the disc of previously unreleased stuff, which is not remarkable, but is okay for those who enjoyed Untitled. There are alternate studio versions of two songs from Untitled's studio portion ("Yesterday's Train" and a more jangly "All the Things"); a studio alternate of "Kathleen's Song," without the orchestration that would be added when it was redone for Byrdmaniax; a studio version of "Lover of the Bayou" (done live on Untitled); the instrumental "White's Lightning, Pt. 2"; and Lowell George's "Willin'" (different from the version that appears on the Byrds' box set). Then you get eight previously unavailable 1970 live recordings, much in the style of what's heard on the live part of Untitled, and including such favorites as "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)," "Ballad of Easy Rider," "My Back Pages," and "Jesus Is Just Alright." An unindexed bonus track, an a cappella studio rendition of "Amazing Grace," ends the set. - allmusic.com

JOHN WETTON - Raised In Captivity (2011)

John Wetton is an important figure in the history of British Rock music having been a member of Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, UK and of course Asia. "Raised in Captivity" is Wetton's sixth solo album, written and recorded in collaboration with former Yes, World Trade and Yoso producer and multi-instrumentalist Billy Sherwood.

Musically, the record showcases the more rocking side of Wetton's musical talents, akin to his now classic album "Battlelines", though not forgetting his ability to perform majestic harmonies over symphonic musical tapestries. Special guests on the album include, among others: Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Eddie Jobson (UK), Mick Box (Uriah Heep), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Steve Morse (Deep Purple), Tony Kaye (Yes) and Geoff Downes (Asia). John Wetton's continued success over the decades and his impressive legacy have certainly stood the test of time. "Raised in Captivity" is just the latest gem in an ongoing list of albums that will certainly stand tall amongst the amazing musical works he has produced over the years. - amazon.com

THE METERS - Here Comes The Meter Man: The Complete Josie Recordings 1968 - 1970 (2011)

The Meters are an American funk band based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Meters performed and recorded their own music from the late 1960s until 1977. The band played an influential role as backing musicians for other artists, including Lee Dorsey, Robert Palmer, and Dr John. While The Meters rarely enjoyed significant mainstream success, they are considered, along with artists like James Brown, one of the progenitors of funk music and their work is highly influential on many other bands, both their contemporaries and modern musicians working in the funk idiom. The Meters' sound is defined by an earthy combination of tight melodic grooves and highly syncopated New Orleans "second-line" rhythms under highly charged guitar and keyboard riffing. Their songs "Cissy Strut" and "Look-Ka Py Py" are considered funk classics. - wikipedia

THE ROLLING STONES - Some Girls (1978) [2011 Deluxe Edition] thumbupthumbupthumbup

The Rolling Stones are pleased to announce the release of Some Girls, the groundbreaking album which introduced the music of the Rolling Stones to a whole new generation of fans. Justly considered one of the finest works by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Ronnie Wood, Some Girls topped the US charts over three decades ago and remains the best selling album of their storied career. This new package will include some undiscovered gems that include tracks that have recently been unearthed from the Rolling Stones vaults by producer Don Was. Some Girls is the Rolling Stones' most direct and diverse collection of material, from Mick Jagger's irresistible falsetto on the four-on-the-floor filler Miss You, their eighth US number one, to the country-flavoured Far Away Eyes via the Chuck Berry meets punk snarl of Respectable. And let's not forget the sensuous, Beast Of Burden, one of Keith Richards’ finest tunes, which reached number 8 on the US singles chart, the garage rock of Shattered, the album's third US Top 40 entry, and the soulful swagger of the group's version of The Temptations' Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me), another timeless offering in their canon of classic Stones Motown covers. Some Girls holds a special place in the history of the Rolling Stones and demonstrates why they remain one of the most thrilling and influential bands of all time. The 1978 album features a Keith Richards' classic Before They Make Me Run, a signature song he stills performs defiantly to this day. Some Girls documented Mick Jagger's love of 70’s funk reflected in Miss You, the dance track that wrongfooted many people, made the club and black charts, and made it okay for other mainstream acts at the time to ‘go disco’.

Thirty-three years on from its original release, the re-mastered editions of Some Girls show why the 1978 album has often been hailed as the equal of Exile On Main Street. Some Girls is both a time capsule and a timeless listen. It features the band at their tightest and toughest, at their most vibrant and vital. It's an all-killer, no-filler, must-have album. It still packs a punch.

BOZ SCAGGS - My Time: A Boz Scaggs Anthology 1969-1997 (1997)

In his liner notes to the double-disc, two-and-a-half-hour Boz Scaggs compilation My Time: The Anthology (1969-1997), Ben Fong-Torres writes, "There are those who, charting Boz's career, identify specific phases: rock and roll with [Steve] Miller; the early solo albums, which were as much country and blues, and pop and jazz, as they were rock; the Slow Dancer/Silk Degrees stage, of Boz as sweet soul singer; the nearly decade-long retrenchment and semi-retirement, and the return to rootsy blues and R&B in Some Change and Come On Home." Fong-Torres goes on to say that this is not an incorrect way to describe Scaggs' career, but that there is more unity than it would imply: "in every phase of his career, he has remained faithful to his musical instincts." Fair enough, and that unity is reflected in the compilation, which shows that, with slight variations, Scaggs has always been interested in what might be called an evolved version of the Chicago blues, augmenting his rock sound with horn charts and prominent female background vocals, all in support of his adenoidal tenor voice. But most people would make a far simpler division in his career, between the early, harder rocking period (1968-1972) and the smooth R&B/disco period (1974-80), when he scored major hits with the singles "Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle" and the multi-platinum album Silk Degrees. While including most of his chart singles (the exceptions are the minor hits "Hollywood" and "Cool Running"), the compilation attempts to de-emphasize that distinction, probably because he had much more critical respect in the earlier phase than in the later one. This is accomplished by a striking example of sequencing legerdemain. In a collection that is otherwise roughly chronological, disc one ends by following the Silk Degrees selections recorded in 1975 with "Loan Me a Dime," a 13-minute blues workout from 1969 that prominently features Duane Allman. Aurally, the sestion is that whatever you may think, Scaggs didn't sell out to disco. It would have been nice if the compilers had trusted his musical instincts as much as the annotator does. That said, the collection is generous and presents most of Scaggs' major recordings across record labels, including tracks recorded for Atlantic, Columbia, Giant, and Virgin.

ART GARFUNKEL with MAIA SHARP & BUDDY MONDLOCK - Everything Waits to Be Noticed (2002)

"Everything Waits to be Noticed" is the ninth solo album by Art Garfunkel, with collaboration from singer-songwriters Maia Sharp and Buddy Mondlock. It is Garfunkel's debut album as a songwriter and was produced by Billy Mann.

Making his technical debut as a songwriter (technical in that his prose poems serve as a lyric source on several tracks), Art Garfunkel takes top billing in what actually qualifies as a collaboration with two other singer/songwriters, Nashville's Buddy Mondlock and L.A.-based Maia Sharp; producer/songwriter Billy Mann plays an essential creative role as well. For all the diverse input, this remains a Garfunkel project at heart. His airy, delicate singing, remarkably identical in quality to his earliest recordings some 40 years earlier, provides the essential textural reference; Mondlock's vocals uncannily replicate Garfunkel's from the opening moments of "Bounce" and elsewhere throughout the album. Only two of these songs were written by outsiders, and these - the self-consciously buoyant "Young and Free" and uncomfortably precious "What I Love About Rain" - don't match the rest in either musical or lyrical accomplishment. Two in particular create near-magical spells, and both are draw from Garfunkel's writing: "The Thread," a wistful chronicle of love lost amidst references to romantic landmarks in New York, and "Perfect Moment," an account of strangers exchanging glances in a theater lobby and achieving, in that timeless second, all the perfection and connection two people might expect. This performance, musically reminiscent of the Simon & Garfunkel classic "For Emily," is exquisitely crafted and impeccably performed - a high point not only here, but in all of Garfunkel's catalog.

TRACKS:
01. Bounce 02. The Thread 03. The Kid 04. Crossing Lines 05. Everything Waits To Be Noticed 06. Young And Free 07. Perfect Moment 08. Turn, Don't Turn Away 09. Wishbone 10. How Did You Know? 11. What I Love About Rain 12. Every Now And Then 13. Another Only One

BRIAN AUGER - Auger Rhythms: Brian Auger's Musical History (2003)

Auger Rhythms, the double-disc career overview of the last 40 years by Brian Auger, is, quite simply, a textbook case for what a career retrospective should be - outside of a box set that is, though it would be great if Ghosttown Records would get around to that as well. Auger is not simply a musician who did one thing and perfected or milked it. Since the early '60s he has proven to be a restless, wandering musical spirit, and this collection is the proof in the pudding that his enormous talent and vision have warranted - and continue to warrant - his participation in multiple genres as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, bandleader, and arranger who has successfully blurred the lines between jazz, blues, R&B, funk, soul, fusion, and rock. All of Auger's periods are covered here, from his earliest days as a jazz pianist to the Trinity to the Oblivion Express to being a sideman on his children's recordings. Of the 28 tracks contained here, 13 of them are previously unreleased. One of these, "Inside of Him," is a new track from the Trinity years with Julie Driscoll, featuring her elegant, deeply moving voice on top of a standard jazz trio setting -- Auger's towering harmonics on the acoustic piano would have been just as welcome in a Billie Holiday set in the early '50s. The earlier work includes the beautiful original "Blues Three Four" from 1961 and a killer version of Bobby Timmons' hard bop-blues classic "Moanin'." The early jazz material showcases Auger as a consummate soloist whose rapidly developing sense of harmony and rhythmic inventions pointed the way for his R&B and fusion excursions. Disc one is simply revelatory. It's breadth and range are astonishing in that they document the inner and hidden life of Auger as well as his hits from the era. The second disc here documents all the obvious choices, from "Freedom Jazz Dance" to "Happiness Is Just Around the Corner" to "Inner City Blues" to "Second Wind.

ALBERT KING - King Albert & New Orleans Heat (2009)

2009 release that compiles two albums from the Blues great on one disc: King Albert (1977) and New Orleans Heat (1978). The king of modern electric soul-blues, Albert King joined Tomato Records in 1976 following his spell with the Stax label and this CD contains two of his very best releases from that era. The splendid King Albert marked an exciting return to form with a fine Motor City blues band that handles everything from B B King's big hit 'You Upset Me Baby' to Little Sonny Willis's exciting 'Love Shock' and a supremely soulful 'Good Time Charlie'. Released the following year, the very different Funk-tinged New Orleans Heat was overseen by legendary R&B producer Allen Toussaint at his Sea-Saint Studios. The cream of the Crescent City session musicians give the songs a real gumbo flavor. - amazon.com

MAGIC SLIM AND THE TEARDROPS - Raw Magic (1982)

Morris Holt, also known as “Magic Slim” is an American blues guitarist and singer. He was born on August 7, 1937, in Grenada, Mississippi. Slim used to play piano but had to give it up when he lost his right pinkie, and he began playing bass with his mentor Magic Sam’s band in Chicago. Soon he formed his own band, the Teardrops, and played in popular juke joints in Chicago. In 1966, Slim’s recording career began with the song “Scufflin,” followed by some singles. In 1977, he recorded his first album, Born Under A Bad Sign, for the French MCM label. During the 1980s, this blues guitarist won his first W. C. Handy Award, and in 2003, Magic Slim and the Teardrops won the W. C. Handy Award as ‘Blues Band of the Year’ for the 6th time.

This 1982 Alligator release, one of the sleepers in the label's catalog, gathers seven studio tracks from two French albums.

MEMPHIS SLIM - Mother Earth (1972)

Memphis Slim (1915 – 1988) was an American blues pianist, singer, and composer. He led a series of bands that, reflecting the popular appeal of jump blues, included saxophones, bass, drums, and piano. A song he first cut in 1947, "Every Day I Have the Blues", has become a blues standard, recorded by many other artists. He made over 500 recordings.

Excellent singing and rousing, sparkling barrelhouse, boogie-woogie and straight blues piano playing from a certified legend. Memphis Slim wasn't shy about making records, and they were seldom not worth hearing. This one didn't break the string of quality efforts.

TRACKS:
01. The Come Back 02. Steppin' Out 03. Blue And Lonesome 04. Rockin' The Blues 05. Slim's Blues 06. Gotta Find My Baby 07. Messin' Around 08. Wish Me Well 09. My Gal Keeps Me Crying 10. Lend Me Your Love 11. Sassy Mae 12. Mother Earth

PINK FLOYD - A Foot In The Door: The Best Of Pink Floyd (2011)

A single-CD anthology of songs chosen by the surviving band members in 2011, A Foot in the Door was conceived as part of EMI's 'Why Pink Floyd?' campaign to reissue the group's entire back catalogue. The selection focuses mainly on the band's seminal albums Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall and Wish You Were Here, with a handful of songs from other periods including early single "See Emily Play" and one track from each of the final three Pink Floyd studio albums. All songs remastered by James Guthrie and Joel Plante in 2011.

The only single disc overview of Pink Floyd’s extensive career is hamstrung by the band’s tendency towards creating sprawling albums, rather than concise hits. Even early songs such as the revelatory “See Emily Play,” Syd Barrett’s lone appearance here, seemed like an anomaly when it hit the UK charts in 1969.

The 2001 double offering Echoes had a larger palette to work with, an enormous advantage over trying to stuff the group’s most popular material into a generous if still limited 80 minutes. But with the recent sonic overhaul/upgrade and reissue of Floyd’s catalog, and some elaborately expanded packages of its biggest albums, the time seems to be right/ripe for this summary. From a more skeptical angle, the oncoming Christmas season typically favors hits collections, a corporate itch that Capitol/EMI is happy to scratch.

TRACKS:
01. Hey You 02. See Emily Play 03. The Happiest Days Of Our Lives 04. Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2) 05. Have A Cigar 06. Wish You Were Here 07. Time 08. The Great Gig In The Sky 09. Money 10. Comfortably Numb 11. High Hopes 12. Learning To Fly 13. The Fletcher Memorial Home 14. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-5) 15. Brain Damage 16. Eclipse

MUDDY WATERS - They Call Me Muddy Waters & Live At Mister Kelly's (2010)

This set combines on a single disc two Muddy Waters LPs originally released by Chess Records in 1971. The first, "They Call Me Muddy Waters", was in itself an anthology, consisting of then-unissued tracks recorded between 1951 and 1967, and arranged chronologically to present a sort of alternative history of the artist who laid the foundation for modern electric blues. The second was a fine live set cobbled together from two shows Waters did in June of 1971 in Chicago. Together, these two albums make for a wonderful portrait of Waters throughout three decades at Chess Records.

Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of rare Chess Records albums from 1971. "They Call Me Muddy Waters" is a mixture of rare late '50s and mid-'60s material. "Live At Mister Kelly's" was recorded in Chicago with Muddy's band of the time, with harmonica player James Cotton appearing under a pseudonym. - cduniverse.com

BIG MAMA TORNTON - With The Muddy Waters Blues Band 1966 (2004)

In the mid- '60s, Big Mama Thornton was a relatively obscure blues singer known mainly for her original recording of "Hound Dog" in 1953, three years before Elvis had a monster hit with it. Due to a lack of gigs, Thornton had a tough time keeping a steady band on the road and would scramble to gather consistently decent musicians. Fortunately, Arhoolie Records' founder and president Chris Strachwitz had witnessed an amazing performance of the era which had Thornton backed by a group of Chicago musicians who included Buddy Guy on guitar. With that performance in mind, Strachwitz was determined to capture that excellence in the studio. He offered the gig to Muddy Waters, whom he met in San Francisco a few days prior to this session. Muddy accepted and brought with him James Cotton (harmonica), Otis Spann (piano), Sammy Lawhorn (guitar), Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson (bass), and Francis Clay (drums). What came out at Coast Recorders on April 25, 1966 is presented on this 17-track disc including seven previously unreleased cuts. From the low-down gutbucket blues of "Black Rat," and "Big Mama's Shuffle" (featuring both Thornton and James Cotton engaging in a battle of the harps), to the hazy, late-night atmosphere of "Life Goes On," "Since I Fell for You," and "I Feel the Way I Feel," all of this material is absolutely timeless. One can only imagine what would have happened if Big Mama's hopes of recording a gospel album with this band had been fulfilled. - cduniverse.com

TRACKS:
01. I'm Feeling Alright 02. Sometimes I have a Heartache 03. Black Rat (take 4) 04. Life Goes On 05. Everything Gonna Be Alright 06. Big Mama's Bumble Bee Blues 07. Gimme A Penny (take 6) 08. LITTLE MILTON - Think Of Me (2005)

James Milton Campbell, Jr. better known as Little Milton, was an American electric blues, rhythm and blues, and soul singer and guitarist, best known for his hit records "Grits Ain't Groceries" and "We're Gonna Make It."

For his 2005 Telarc label debut, the 71-year-old uitarist / singer / songwriter found a kindred spirit in producer/guitarist Jon Tiven. Together, they composed all the songs for a remarkably consistent comeback. Discarding the strings, horns, and lavish production that blues purists often felt drowned Milton's substantial talents, Tiven keeps the sound lean and tough. Milton responds with his toughest performance in years, wading in the Southern swamps for "Next to You," pleading with that patented aged-whiskey voice on the sumptuous "Reconsider Me," and tearing into the superb soul-blues style he's best known for on the crackling mid-tempo opener "Gonna Find Me Somebody to Love." Those new to Little Milton's legendary talents--and even older fans who might have lost track throughout the years--will find the icon in splendid form on this magnificent release. In 1988, Little Milton was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and won a W.C. Handy Award. His most final album, Think of Me, was released in May 2005 on the Telarc imprint, and included writing and guitar on three songs by Peter Shoulder of the UK-based blues-rock trio Winterville. Milton died on August 4, 2005 from complications following a stroke.

TRACKS:
01. Gonna Find Me Somebody To Love 02. Let Your Love Rain Down On Me 03. The Blues Is My Companion 04. Something Wonderful 05. Gone With The Wind 06. I'll Be 07. Next To You 08. Think Of Me (Thinking Of You) 09. Reconsider Me 10. Second Hand Love 11. Feel Like A Man 12. That's Where It's At

ALVIN LEE & MYLON LeFEVRE - On The Road To Freedom (1973) [2003 Repertoire Record, Remastered]

Ten Years After guitarist Lee teamed up with gospel crooner LeFevre for a session that could be best described as hard spiritual rock. The 1973 album features guest shots from George Harrison, Stevie Winwood, Ronnie Wood, and Jim Capaldi, among others. This side project of Alvin Lee (departing from Ten Years After's no-holds-barred style) contains some of his best work. Those who are only familiar with such monster albums as 'Cricklewood Green' and 'A Space in Time' may find this work puzzling. Hooking up with American gospel singer Mylon Le Fevre, Lee served up helpings of more textured, sophisticated music than TYA. Even overt rockers like 'Riffin' and 'Fallen Angel' exhibit a more "roots-rock" sound than such songs as '50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain'. Using the talents of many big names (including George Harrison and several 'Traffic' members), the result is more varied and intricate than previous works. Even his blistering guitar work shows more finesse than usual with TYA's releases. The songs here range from the interesting-but-mediocre ('Lay Me Back' and 'Carry My Load') to the truly superlative (the title tune, 'The World is Changing' and the country-fried 'Funny'). In my opinion, one of Alvin Lee's best songs (maybe his very best) is the titular 'On the Road to Freedon'; with Mylon Le Fevre providing only backing vocals on this track, it effectively is Alvin Lee and Traffic (Steve Winwood on piano, Jim Capaldi on drums and Rebob on congas). Boy, is it one great song. Searing guitar, solid drumming, tasteful piano, a rousing melody and Lee's vocals never sounding better. It's nice to have this release available after so long. - amazon.com

TRACKS:
01. On the Road to Freedom 02. The World Is Changing [I Got a Woman Back in Georgia] 03. So Sad [No Love of His Own] 04. Fall Angel 05. Funny 06. We Will Shine 07. Carry My Load 08. Lay Me Back 09. Let ‘Em Say What They Will 10. I Can’t Take It 11. Riffin 12. Rockin’ Til the Sun Goes Down 13. So Sad [No Love of His Own] - single version

Personnel: Alvin Lee (vocals, guitar, sitar, bagpipe, drums); Mylon LeFevre (vocals, acoustic guitar, 12-string guitar, percussion, background vocals); Ron Wood (guitar, 12-string guitar, slide guitar, drums); Andy Stein (fiddle); Tim Hinckley (piano, organ, background vocals); Steve Winwood (piano); Jim Capaldi, Mick Fleetwood (drums); Rebop (congas); Mike Patto (percussion, background vocals).

WILLIAM SHATNER - Seeking Major Tom (2011)

William Shatner follows up his cult classic 1968 album The Transformed Man and equally compelling 2004 Ben Folds collaboration Has Been with 2011's double-disc space odyssey Seeking Major Tom. Featuring a bevy of guest artists including Sheryl Crow, Peter Frampton, Steve Miller, Bootsy Collins, and others, the album presents more of Shatner's now storied "is it a joke or not" spoken word takes on various well-known pop songs. As with The Transformed Man, Seeking Major Tom is clearly meant to play off Shatner's iconic role as Captain James T. Kirk on Star Trek, and the space theme is present throughout every song here, including such cuts as "Space Oddity," "Space Cowboy," "Walking on the Moon," "Spirit in the Sky," and others. In fact, disc one is bookended with Shatner's title track version of the 1983 Peter Schilling hit "Major Tom (Coming Home)" and Crow covering K.I.A.'s 2003 song "Mrs. Major Tom." Overall, the album is a get-what-you-pay-for offering that both matches Shatner's earlier efforts and, on a few occasions, even transcends what has come before. The real surprise here, however, is not derived from the clearly intended-to-be-humorous moments such as Shatner's campy take on Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me with Science" featuring an inspired appearance from Collins. On the contrary, it's the more subdued and even serious moments when Shatner is allowed to settle into character and use the gravitas of his trained actor's voice that he actually does transcend the irony of his schtick. - cduniverse.com

THE UNION thumbupthumbupthumbup

Combining youth with experience, The Union formed from the ashes of one of the UK blues-rock scene's most under-rated contemporary bands and from one of its most enduring and successful exponents. Peter Shoulder, the lead vocalist of North East trio Winterville, who recorded just one album, Everything In Moderation, before splitting in 2007, and Luke Morley, the chief songwriter, guitarist and producer of London rock veterans Thunder, had previously met in 2001 and spent the subsequent eight years working together whenever their respective band commitments allowed them to. But it was only when Thunder went their separate ways in 2009, after twenty years and nine studio albums together, that the duo began recording material under the guise of The Union. Joined by Morley's former bandmate Chris Childs and The Quireboys and Tokyo Dragons drummer Phil Martini for their live shows, they played their first gig in the same year at London's The Relentless Garage, and went onto perform at the Sonsiphere and High Voltage festivals, as well as their own headline tour before releasing their self-titled debut album in 2010. Featuring the singles "Step Up To The Plate," "Watch The River Flow" and "This Time Next Year," it pursued a more eclectic direction than their previous output, taking in blues, Americana, folk and acoustic rock alongside their renowned harder-edged sound. After scooping Best New Band Of The Year at the Classic Rock Awards, they supported Thin Lizzy, Triggerfinger and Whitesnake on their European tours, and released their second album, Siren's Song, in 2011.

2010 - The Union
The Union is the eponymous debut album by The Union, the English rock band formed by ex-Thunder guitarist Luke Morley and Peter Shoulder (formerly of Winterville). BBC reviewed the album on August 8, calling it "a collaboration which benefits from a perfect pairing of youth and experience" and noting that it "could well be the album of their collective careers". Music News noted that the "critically acclaimed release" was "a very modern take on classic styles", featuring "impeccable songwriting" and "uniquely powerful and emotive vocals".

LENNY KRAVITZ - Black And White America (2011)

For his ninth album, Lenny Kravitz found much of his inspiration close to home. In fact, the very spirit of Black and White America came from the locations in which the music was made from a tiny, 400-person community in the Bahamas to the streets of Paris. And out of his experiences as a true citizen of the planet, his first new songs in three years became the most personal and diverse collection of his career. "No doubt, my environment definitely lends a lot to the creative process," he says.

Black and White America was written in reaction to a documentary Kravitz saw about racism in the post-Obama United States. Amidst the defiant lyrics, the songwriter references his own family history, and the experiences of his parents as an interracial couple in the 1960s. Though the sonic emphasis of Black and White America may land squarely on the funk, the force behind such guitar-driven smashes as "Fly Away" and "Are You Gonna Go My Way" hasn't turned his back on rock. Songs like "Rock Star City Life," and the first single, "Stand," give the album a healthy dose of crunching riffs. The overwhelming emotion on Black and White America is the feel of optimism, faith and hope. - amazon.com

PABLO CRUISE - 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection (2001)

Pablo Cruise achieved some measure of success during the latter part of the '70s with their mellow, easygoing California pop. The band was formed in 1973 by former members of Stoneground and It's a Beautiful Day: guitarist Dave Jenkins, keyboardist Cory Lerios, bassist Bud Cockrell, and drummer Steve Price. The group was praised for its compositional and instrumental skill on the albums Pablo Cruise and Lifeline, and was rewarded with the Top Ten hit "Whatcha Gonna Do?" in 1977 from A Place in the Sun. Cockrell left and was replaced by former Santana bassist Bruce Day. Worlds Away went platinum, as did its predecessor, and produced three hit singles, including the Top Ten "Love Will Find a Way." By the time the '80s rolled around, the new wave movement was in full swing on the pop charts, and the group fell out of favor with the record-buying public. Several Pablo Cruise songs were used as soundtrack material for sports programs on ABC, CBS, and NBC, and the band's work also appeared in the films Free Ride, An Unmarried Woman, and Dreamer. - allmusic.com

SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS - Soul Time! (2011)

Daptone Records is turning ten years old! To celebrate the label’s role in expediting the worldwide revival of soul, they’re releasing a new record by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Although the latest album by the label’s driving force, I Learned The Hard Way, has been released only a little longer than a year ago, this anniversary is a great opportunity to release a special record. Soul Time! is the very exceptional fifth album of the band from Brooklyn, on which Bosco Mann, bassist and bandleader, has put together exclusive songs from the band’s live-repertoire. Which has until now been reserved for people going to Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings concerts only, is now available to a greater public. For Soul Time!, the band went into the studio and recorded all the songs most neatly – whatever that might mean in the context of the tatty Daptone Studios – in order to immortalize them on vinyl. Those who think that the songs loose their quality through the recording couldn’t be more wrong. Instead, these 12 incredibly energetic songs show why the whole world is crazy about this band: Bosco Mann’s recording-skills and production-methods as well as the energy that’s to be found within in the Dap-Kings’ instruments and Sharon Jones’ voice are simply matchless.

TRACKS:
01. Genuine Pt. 1 02. Genuine Pt. 2 03. Longer and Stronger 04. He Said I Can 05. I'm Not Gonna Cry 06. When I Come Home 07. What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes? 08. Settling In 09. Ain't No Chimneys In The Projects 10. New Shoes 11. Without A Trace 12. Inspiration Information

THE DOORS - A Collection (2011)

Rhino UK is proud to announce the release of The Doors - A Collection. A 6 CD retrospective box set of the first six legendary albums from The Doors. With an intoxicating, genre-blending sound, provocative and uncompromising songs and the mesmerizing power of singer Jim Morrison’s poetry and presence, The Doors had a transformative impact not only on popular music but on popular culture. Their debut album The Doors in 1967 showcased the band’s controversial form of dark, brooding rock, an antithesis to the popular Californian sunshine pop of the 1960s. Followed by Strange Days, Waiting for the Sun, The Soft Parade, Morrison Hotel and L.A. Woman The Doors continued to make iconic albums which would maintain their influence on popular music to this day. Tragically The Doors run was cut short with the death of Jim Morrison in 1971, 40 years ago this year (3rd July).

This collection packages the complete anthology of The Doors studio albums with Jim Morrison. It features the 40th anniversary mixes of the tracks, remastered by The Doors and Bruce Botnik, with the original artwork in replicated paper sleeves.

GEORGE HARRISON - Sue Me Sue You Blues: The Lost Tapes (2003)

A rare and excellent recording of the unreleased “Soundstage Of The Mind” is an assett for the Seattle tape. The rearrangement of “In My Life” follows but Harrison sings the last line “In my life, I’ve loved you all” instead of “I’ve loved God more” as he does later in the tour. The show ends with “What Is Life?” and the ten minute long version of “My Sweet Lord” as the encore. The show definitely improves with the long jam in “For You Blue.” Harrison introduced the band at this point before a short, “disco” version of “Give Me Peace.”

George Harrison was the first ex-Beatle to schedule a US tour. The opening night was on November 2nd, in Vancouver and the second show was two nights later in Seattle. Sue Me Sue You Blues is a Russian copy of Live In Seattle 1974. The sound quality is very good.

Recorded live in Seattle at the Center Coliseum, November 4, 1974

THE RADIATORS - Wild & Free (2008)

Above all else, The Radiators are a gig band. Blues, no doubt; Cajun, yes, swamp-boogie, absolutely: a mix of guitar-driven swamp vibe meets formula-driven, but distinctive, rock and roll. Whatever you want is all there — The Radiators' musical stew — as befits a true home grown New Orleans band. In some ways they are like their grander musical cousin, Credence Clearwater Revival; they excel at everything, and so don't stand out in any one area. As Springsteen said about Credence, "they weren't the coolest, just the best." The Radiators aren't the best, just the coolest, but only when you hear them live. Put them in the studio and they cut a distinct groove, indeed. But it's being on the road — in front of people, performing against the hum and jangle of a local bar or dive — that makes The Radiators one of the great, if not greatly known, bands of our time. 1987's Law of the Fish is, by consensus, their best studio work. But their truly great work, what you pay the price of admission for, is, well, what you pay the price of admission for: to see them and hear them. Other than The Grateful Dead — surely the most self-indulgent rock band of our time — The Radiators represent perhaps the largest chasm between the live versus the playback experience. Live is better, and with The Radiators it's not even close. Which is why Radz Records has done all of us a favor by releasing the two-disc Wild & Free, 28 songs that represent special performances, mostly in front of crowds, of some of The Radiators' best work. A few of the songs are previously unreleased, and two new tunes — "Where Was You At?" and "Girl With the Golden Eyes" — were written especially for the release. But buy Wild & Free for its many live performance pleasures; everything else is thrown in just for good measure. - blogcritics.org

B.B. KING - Mr. Blues & Confesson' The Blues (2005)

This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues shouter, supported by an antiquated big band and/or orchestra. Arguably the best of the lot comes from the Maxwell Davis led ensemble on the first of several Big Joe Turner tunes, the Ahmet Ertegun penned "Chains of Love." The upgrade of Ivory Joe Hunter's "Blues at Midnight" is closer to the spirit of modern era King as he aptly demonstrates his singular testifyin' style. The fun and frolic of both "I'm Gonna Sit in 'Til You Give In" and "My Baby's Comin' Home" are the least dated of the bunch, indicating the direction that King would ultimately take. The landmark Live at the Regal (1964) is a critical link to the albums featured on Mr. Blues/Confessin' the Blues (2005). It essentially redefined B.B. King's presence in the (then) modern blues revival. He retained his expressive combo from Live at the Regal with Duke Jethro (piano), Leo Lauchie (bass), and Sonny Freeman (drums) who have collectively become increasingly adept at providing King room for his solos. Plus, they generally support -- rather than detract from -- his skills as a vocalist. Still, on the whole, Confessin' the Blues comes off as forced at times -- as if there were a mandate for King to become a mix between Ray Charles and Joe Turner. The tracks "See See Rider," "In the Dark," and Jay "Hootie" McShann's "Confessin' the Blues" are bound to their solid arrangements. That leaves very little space for King to fill in the gaps left by the overpowering horn section. These discrepancies are made up for with the likes of the intimate "Do You Call That a Buddy." Not only does the relaxed groove bear sonic traces of Bobby "Blue" Bland's hit interpretation of "St. James Infirmary," it is a harbinger of things to come from King. Among the other classic keepers are "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town," "How Long, How Long Blues," and not surprisingly, a few sides made famous by none other than Big Joe Turner himself with "Cherry Red" and "Wee Baby Blues." Standing out from the rest is the cover of Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love" that concludes Confessin' and this anthology alike. With an old-fashioned big band behind him, King exudes a mastery over the performance. As if he were putting the song in its place, he playfully lords over in what is a formative example of the approach King would subsequently become known for. Audiophiles should note that the 2006 reissue of Mr. Blues by Hip-O Select was given a fresh digital remastering by Gavin Lurssen to comparatively superior results. - allmusic.com

Culled from nine albums, recorded for Stax, Elektra, ATCO, Columbia, Capricorn, Piece of My Heart 1969-1978 features outstanding music and stunning vocal performances. With superb quality audio, colour booklet and detailed liner notes. Bonnie first came to prominence as an Ikette before she teamed up with former Shindogs member Delaney Bramlett in the influential and highly regarded Delaney & Bonnie and Friends. After recording her solo debut Sweet Bonnie Bramlett ('Able, Qualified and Ready') she signed to the prestigious Capricorn imprint where producer Johnny Sandlin indulged her love of R&B, soul and gospel with the recording of two earthy and dynamic albums, It's Time ('Oncoming Traffic') and Lady's Choice ('Forever Young'), cut with players from Macon, Georgia and Muscle Shoals, Alabama. LUCKY PETERSON - Organ Soul Session (2009)

Lucky Peterson was discovered by blues legend Willie Dixon when he was three years old, released his first record at five and soon after appeared on The Tonight Show. Trained by keyboardists Bill Doggett and Jimmy Smith, Peterson went on to play behind Little Milton, Bobby “Blue” Bland and Kenny Neal. On return from the “Young Blues Giants” tour of Europe, he signed first with Alligator, then Verve, Blue Thumb and Birdology/Dreyfus, where he recorded what Amazon.com called “his finest album,” Black Midnight Sun, in 2003. The New Yorker called him “a master of the guitar, organ and microphone.” But his journey was not a smooth one, and Peterson spent the next few years in transition, with personal troubles preventing a proper follow-up to Black Midnight Sun. But you can always turn around. These words took on special meaning for the 45-year-old Peterson, which is why the first album since his rehabilitation is titled You Can Always Turn Around. It is an uplifting collection of songs that speak of strles and salvation, using the gritty clarity of acoustic roots-blues (with modern touches) as its main musical vehicle. The album, scheduled for September 28, 2010 release on Dreyfus Records, was made in the Catskills with master Woodstock musicians Larry Campbell, guitar (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm); Scott Petito, bass (The Fugs, Mercury Rev, Rick Danko Band); and Gary Burke, drums (Joe Jackson, Shania Twain). Peterson as usual plays a mix of instruments: duolian resonator, piano and acoustic and electric guitars. Also prevalent is the acoustic piano on which Lucky sounds like a bluesy Elton John. “He’s something of a genius — his piano playing remind me of Aretha Franklin,” says drummer Burke, who has played behind Franklin on the road. But it’s Peterson’s vocal instrument that some might find most arresting. Peterson wraps his voice around an eclectic selection of blues-based materials including songs by original Delta bluesmen Robert Johnson, Rev. Gary Davis and Blind Willie McTell up through the music of today’s top songwriters including Lucinda Williams (who remarked "Lucky Peterson's version of my song, "Atonement" absolutely blew me away! It is just spectacular!!!"), Tom Waits and Ray LaMontagne. The album closes with a version of Curtis Mayfield’s “Think.” “This album is very different for me — it’s more from the heart,” says Peterson. “The songs were picked by (co-producer) Doug Yoel, and he knew my heart. I feel like all these songs were for me.” The album would be the last co-production of Francis Dreyfus, who passed away on June 24, before the album’s release. One standout on the album is the civil-rights era anthem “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free,” written by Billy Taylor and popularized by Nina Simone. The new recording introduces Tamara Peterson, Lucky’s wife, a worthy blues singer in her own right. The chemistry between Lucky and Tamara on that session was so exciting that Larry Campbell was prompted to invite the pair to appear with the Levon Helm Band at the Midnight Ramble concert the following night. Peterson creates something brand new on “Trampled Rose,” turning a wordless hook into a seductive Arabian-flavored line. The band responded to and fed the creativity of the newly awakened Lucky Peterson, and the results are truly special. Peterson continues to tour, doing dates big and small. This new album should increase awareness of and demand for this one-of-a-kind musician. And when off the road, he’ll be at his church in Dallas, Texas with his family, holding on, and playing for one very lucky congregation. - amazon.com

LOU REED & METALLICA - Lulu (2011)

Lulu is a collaborative album between rock singer-songwriter Lou Reed, and heavy metal band Metallica. The album was recorded in San Rafael, California during April through June of 2011, after Reed had played with Metallica at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th Anniversary Concert which lead them to wanting to collaborate together. The lead single from the album, titled "The View", was released on September 27, 2011 to a widely negative reception on the internet and failed to chart anywhere. The second single was announced to be "Iced Honey" and will receive a music video directed by film maker Darren Aronofsky. Conceptually, the album is based around Lulu - two plays originally written by the German playwright Frank Wedekind. A majority of the album's composition is based around spoken word delivered by Reed over instrumentals composed by Metallica, with occasional backing vocals provided by Metallica lead vocalist James Hetfield. Reed wrote a majority of the lyrics. The album was released worldwide on October 31, 2011, and on November 1 in North America.[4] Upon its release, Lulu received generally negative reviews from most music critics and was widely panned. Review website Metacritic listed the album as the worst of 2011. - wikipedia

SCORPIONS - Comeblack (2011)

The album's title is already a bit tongue-in-cheek - and a good deal self ironic: After the Scorpions had announced their leave and advertised their last tour, the most frequently asked question by journalists all over the world, was the one about a possible comeback. "Comeblack" is a pun and a parody at the same time. The idea for this album came up during the rockers' impressive world tour: "We can't exactly remember the day, the month or the hour, but at some point during this tour we were simply overwhelmed by the success of "Sting in the Tail" and our farewell tour. The idea to go back to the studio was born out of pure excitement Screaming fans wherever we went! It was great to share the studio with Mikael and Martin again, going crazy with ideas for a new "project"!"

2011 album from the German Hard Rockers, a collection of re-recordings of their some of their choice cuts as well as covers of some of their favorite songs originally performed by The Beatles, The Stones, T. Rex, The Small Faces, The Kinks and others.

SCOTT WALKER - Climate of Hunter (1984) & Tilt (1995)

1975 - Climate of Hunter
"Climate of Hunter" is the eleventh studio album by the American solo artist Scott Walker. It was released in March 1984 and reached number 60 on the UK Albums Chart. It includes the single "Track Three". It was also to be his only album of the 1980s. Walker wrote the songs for the album between August and September 1983. The album was recorded between October and December 1983 in the UK at The Town House, EMI and Sarm West Studios. Receiving positive reviews the album was released as an LP in March 1984 before it was released on CD in the mid-1980s. The album was reissued on CD in January 2006, with new revised artwork and having been remastered. The original artwork for the album was designed by C.More.Tone with photography by Bob Carlos Clarke. - wikipedia
TRACKS:
01. Rawhide 02. Dealer 03. Track Three 04. Sleepwalkers Woman 05. Track Five 06. Track Six 07. Track Seven 08. Blanket Roll Blues

1995 - Tilt
Perhaps not even Scott Walker truly understands this record, which isn't to say that it it's not one of the most ambitious and ultimately rewarding musical experiences of the last few years; it's just that exactly what Walker was thinking when he made TILT remains a mystery to this day. Even Brian Eno, a huge Walker fan and no stranger to the avant-garde, apparently had to walk away from the sessions early on in the recording. Longtime Scott Walker fans shouldn't expect either the Brechtian song-stories of his solo material, or his Spector-influenced work with The Walker Brothers. TILT is the sound of a man swallowed whole by the music industry. Unidentifiable noises pop in and out of the mix as Walker's voice, a beautiful baritone almost unequaled in pop, floats ethereally around, at times seemingly diving deep into an undersea echo chamber. The lyrics are more haiku than iambic pentameter and those expecting a chorus (much less a verse), will be severely disappointed. Whatever TILT is, it's unlike anything you have ever heard. - cduniverse.com

PINK FLOYD - Wish You Were Here [Experience Edition] (2011)

The breakthrough success of Dark Side of the Moon made Wish You Were Here a crucial follow-up in strictly commercial terms. Further pressure came from it being Pink Floyd's first recording for a new label, Columbia. Yet the demands on the band only provided Roger Waters more fodder for his lyrics, which glanced at the band's roots as well as their new responsibilities. The mechanized throb of a VCS3 synthesizer, fed through a repeat-echo unit, signals the opening bars of "Welcome to the Machine," a diatribe against an industry more concerned with money than creative music-making. "Have a Cigar" further establishes Waters' contempt by bringing in singer Roy Harper to play the role of a "faceless suit," who none-too-innocently asks, "Which one's Pink?" The remaining songs indirectly look back to the first casualty of Pink Floyd's growing fame, the group's founder, Syd Barrett. The 20-minute-plus "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" has its roots in earlier pieces like "Atom Heart Mother Suite" and "Echoes." But rather than just another Floydian soundscape, its lyrics make it a paean to Barrett's genius and a requiem for his subsequent breakdown. The first five of the song's nine movements open the album with sax player Dick Parry wailing as effectively as he did on Dark Side of the Moon. The final four sections, which close the album, form a reprise that starts with the sound of wind and David Gilmour's guitar screaming and crying. The band then settles into a laid-back jam that ends with Richard Wright's billowing synth delicately fading out. The title track deals also with Barrett, as well as the tension the idealist Waters was feeling in battling the greed that surrounded the band's success. The themes of disillusionment planted throughout Wish You Were Here would eventually sprout full-blown on The Wall.

THE BEACH BOYS - The Smile Sessions (2011)

[5 CD's Box Set]

Smile (sometimes typeset with the idiosyncratic partial capitalization SMiLE) is a previously unreleased album by The Beach Boys recorded throughout 1966 and 1967. The project was intended by its creator Brian Wilson as the follow-up to Pet Sounds, but was never completed in its original form. The project was resurrected in 2003, and a newly recorded version was released by Wilson in 2004. In 2011, some of the surviving Beach Boys revived their own original version of the album, and a box set, known as The Smile Sessions, was released, featuring a version of the album reconstructed from the original recordings, along with many session highlights and outtakes. During the years Smile remained unavailable, it had come to be regarded as the most famous unreleased album of all time.

During the 37 years from its cancellation to the release of Wilson's version, Smile acquired considerable mystique, and bootlegged tracks from the never-completed album are circulated widely among Beach Boys collectors. Many of the tracks which were originally recorded for Smile eventually found their way onto subsequent Beach Boys albums. - wikipedia

BUDDY MILLER - The Best Of The Hightone Years (2008)

Multi-talented producer / guitarist / singer / songwriter Buddy Miller emerged in the 1990's as a driving force in Americana. He's renowned as much for his work with Emmylou Harris and with his wife, Julie, as for his solo work, but this anthology covering his 1995-2002 releases is a reminder that he's one of the most substantial artists ever to work under the alt-country umbrella. From the doomy clang of "Midnight and Lonesome" to the tender balladry of "My Love Will Follow You," with stops along the way at raucous honky-tonk ("Hole in My Head") and sweet country soul (a cover of Otis Redding's "That's How Strong My Love Is"), THE BEST OF THE HIGHTONE YEARS overflows with Miller's raw passion, stinging guitar, soulful singing, and spot-on songcraft, and makes for an excellent introduction to his work. - cduniverse.com

THIN LIZZY - Waiting For An Alibi: The Collection (2011)

2011 collection from the Irish Rock legends led by the late Phil Lynott. Lizzy have left behind a spectacular series of songs and albums because of their desire to continuously challenge themselves. There was no style they wouldn't tackle with each combination of talented guitarists like Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson who brought their own individuality to the band as well as fiery front man and songwriter supreme, Phil Lynott. This 20 track collection includes many of their hits including 'Whiskey In The Jar', and the 1975 anthem that surely defined the band, 'The Boys Are Back In Town'. You'll also find 'Waiting For An Alibi', 'Killer On The Loose' and 'Dancin' In the Moonlight'.

This 2011 budget-priced U.K. collection offers up a nice balance between Thin Lizzy's radio hits ( "Boys Are Back in Town," "Whiskey in the Jar," "Killer on the Loose," "Dancin' in the Moonlight") and overlooked gems like "Soldier of Fortune," "Opium Trail," and "King's Vengeance." Twenty tracks strong, Waiting for an Alibi: The Collection holds its own against other single-disc overviews like 2004's Greatest Hits and 2006's Definitive Collection (2002's exhaustive box set Vagabonds Kings Warriors and Angels still provides the most bang for the buck) and provides the perfect gateway for listeners looking to get their first fix of Ireland's first heavy rockers. - cduniverse.com

GEORGE HARRISON - Living In The Material World (2011)

George Harrison: Living in the Material World is a documentary film directed by Martin Scorsese, based on the life of George Harrison. George Harrison famously titled his 1973 album "Living in the Material World", and as the follow up to his "All Things Must Pass", the former Beatle chronicled his ongoing exploration to define himself on both the physical and spiritual plains. But now that title (also a song on the album) takes on a new resonance as the name selected for Martin Scorsese’s much-anticipated documentary on the life of Harrison.

The deluxe edition’s ten-track exclusive CD premieres unreleased material, some of which may be familiar to longtime Harrison collectors. You’ll find many All Things Must Pass-vintage demos and early takes: “My Sweet Lord,” “All Things Must Pass,” “Behind That Locked Door,” “Awaiting On You All,” “Run of the Mill” and the Bob Dylan co-write “I’d Have You Any Time.” You’ll also find a performance of Dylan’s “Mama, You’ve Been On My Mind” (which may be the oft-circulated Beatles-era track) and an early stab at “Woman, Don’t You Cry For Me” from Thirty Three and 1/3. The demo of “The Light That Has Lighted the World” led to the finished track on the original album Living in the Material World, and finally there’s a Harrison version of the Gilbert Becaud classic “Let It Be Me.”

TRACKS:
01. My Sweet Lord (demo) 02. Run Of The Mill (demo) 03. I’d Have You Any Time (early take) 04. Mama You’ve Been On My Mind (demo) 05. Let It Be Me (demo) 06. IKE & TINA TURNER - The Ike & Tina Turner Story (2007)

The Ike and Tina Turner Story features classic Ike & Tina Turner songs including their very first bona-fide hit "A Fool in Love," a concoction of soul and raw vulnerability that shook the music world when it was released in 1960. The 3-CD box set also includes top hits and fan favorites "Proud Mary," "Nutbush City Limits," "I've Been Loving You Too Long," "Come Together, "Honky Tonk Woman," "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," The Ikettes smash hit "I'm Blue (Gong Gong Song)" and a special live performance of "River Deep, Mountain High." And since nothing could match the electricity of their live performances, the third disc in the collection comes with the entire 1969 live album "Live.....In Person" (never available before on CD), which includes songs like "Respect" and "Son of A Preacher Man."

During their musical reign, Ike and Tina dominated the R&B and pop charts. Ike is credited with being the brilliant architect that crafted their concerts' frenetic pace, feverish dance routines, impeccable musicianship and vigorous interplay between the band members and the singers. Even more appealing were their songs, which transcended all genres (particularly soul and rock), including classic interpretations of The Beatles' "Come Together" and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary," which became Ike and Tina's biggest hit. T. Rex's Marc Bolan even played an uncredited guitar on "Sexy Ida" and on another of their biggest hits, "Nutbush City Limits." Their crossover success became official when The Rolling Stones brought Ike & Tina onto their 1969 US tour.

The box set highlights Ike's genius as a musician, songwriter, producer and guiding force in the evolution of African American music from juke joint blues to R&B and then to soul and funk while Tina's unparalleled vocals and explosive performances are evident throughout the set.

THE V-ROYS - Sooner or Later (2011)

Formed in Knoxville, TN, the V-Roys began to walk the fine line between rootsy country and cutting-edge alternative rock with their formation in 1994, comprising vocalist/guitarist Scott Miller, lead guitarist John Paul Keith, bassist Paxton Sellers, and drummer Jeff Bills. The quartet signed to Praxis Records, but the label folded soon after, prompting Steve Earle to sign the V-Roys to his E-Squared Records. He also produced the band's debut album, Just Add Ice. Just before the album was released in September 1996, Keith left the band and was replaced by Mike Harrison. In 1998, the V-Roys issued their sophomore effort, All About Town, again co-produced by Steve Earle. Two years later, Are You Through Yet? was released.

The V-Roys are not reuniting but did get together to create this collection of 18 songs that represents the best of their catalog. To sweeten the deal, they found 5 unreleased studio tracks that include 2 unreleased original songs, 'Hotel Room' and 'Someone to Push Around'. all have been polished up and remastered for 'Sooner or Later'. The V-Roys are guitar/vocals Scott Miller, guitar/vocals Mic Harrison, bass/vocals Paxton Sellers and drums/percussion Jeff Bills. All songs except 'Cold Beer Hello' produced by the Twangtrust (Ray Kennedy and Steve Earle). Guest musicians: Larry Atamanuik, Steve Earle,Tommy Hannum, Jim Hoke, Dan Gillis, Ray Kennedy, Ronnie McCoury and Michael Smotherman.

THE BEACH BOYS - The sretan Sessions (2011) @320 vinyl rip

I'm not sure that this album is so important, but too much requests, so...(zinhof)

With the full participation of original Beach Boys Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Brian Wilson, Capitol/EMI has, for the first time, collected and compiled the band’s legendary 1966-’67 sessions for the never-completed sretan album. In numerous sessions between the spring of 1966 and the summer of 1967, The Beach Boys recorded a bounty of songs and drafts for an album, sretan, that was intended to follow the band's 1966 masterpiece, Pet Sounds. The master tapes were ultimately shelved, and The Beach Boys' sretan has never been released. Drawn from the original masters, The sretan Sessions presents an in-depth overview of The Beach Boys' recording sessions for the enigmatic album, which has achieved legendary, mythical status for music fans around the world.

The sretan Sessions’ double vinyl LP features an approximation of what was intended to be the completed sretan album, compiled from The Beach Boys’ original session masters. Additional session highlights and bonus tracks are also included, including demos and stereo mixes.

SAFFIRE - THE UPPITY BLUES WOMEN - The early nineties...

Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women was a three-woman blues musical ensemble in the Washington, D.C. area. It was founded in 1987 by Ann Rabson, Gaye Adegbalola and Earlene Lewis. Lewis separated from the band in 1992 and was replaced by Andra Faye. The group then featured Rabson on piano, vocals and guitar, Adegbalola on vocals and guitar, and Faye on vocals, bass, mandolin, violin and guitar. Saffire's music was a combination of serious blues songs and comedic novelty songs. They played original songs (such as "Do Your Duty", "You Got to Know Him" and "Tain't Nobody's Business"), and well as the music of blueswomen who have inspired them, such as Big Mama Thornton, Ida Cox and Koko Taylor. Their music, both comedic and serious, tends to deal with feminist themes, which has made them popular outside of traditional blues circles.

They were the first acoustic band to be signed by Alligator Records. Their song "Middle Aged Blues Boogie," written by Adegbalola, was named best original song at the W.C. Handy Awards (now the Blues Music Awards) in 1990. Saffire has shared the stage with B.B. King, Ray Charles, Willie Dixon and Koko Taylor. An announcement on the group's website in November, 2009, stated Saffire had retired and amicably disbanded. - wikipedia

GOTTHARD - Homegrown: Alive In Lugano (2011) thumbup

Gotthard may not exactly be a massively well known entity outside of their native Switzerland, but that sure isn’t a reflection of their exceptional musical quality. When it comes to delivering classic hard rock, very few have done it consistently better than Gotthard. In vocalist Steve Lee, Gotthard possess(ed) one of the greatest voices in rock, something I personally have no hesitation in stating. With my wavering use of possess and possessed, it’s still somewhat hard to accept that tragically on the 5th of October 2010, Steve Lee died during a motorbike trip through the USA. It therefore comes with some tragic irony that this upcoming release Homegrown: Alive In Lugano captures one of Steve’s last ever performances, at an event in their hometown organized by Harley Davidson bikers on the 17th of July 2010. In front of 20,000 people, the concert held particular significance to the band, with all Gotthard band members being enthusiastic bikers themselves and with a history of performing at similar types of events. - maytherockbewithyou.com

ALBERT KING & STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN - In Session (1999) [Deluxe Edition 2010] thumbup

Vaughan was an Albert King acolyte. On December 6, 1983, they joined together for a memorable performance for the Canadian television In Session program. The series would pair musicians who were similar in style but had rarely if ever played together. King and Vaughan would never share the stage again. In Session was released as a CD during 1999 and would top the blues charts in The United States. It was King’s biggest selling album. Now it has been reissued with an accompanying DVD of the performance. The only thing better than hearing Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan play together is to see them play together.

In Session (Deluxe Edition) is an essential release for anyone even mildly interested in the blues. Albert King is the teacher and leads Vaughan through the set but allows him to exchange leads with him. The vocal interaction and banter between the two is also included, which give the proceeding an intimate and authentic feel.

TRACKS:
01. Call It Stormy Monday 02. ['Old Times'] 03. Pride and Joy 04. Ask Me No Questions 05. ['Pep Talk'] 06. Blues at Sunrise 07. ['Turn It Over'] 08. Overall Junction 09. Match Box Blues 10. ['Who Is Stevie'] 11. Don't Lie to Me
