THEA GILMORE - Liejacker (2008)

Prolific British singer-songwriter Thea Gilmore returns with her eighth album in ten years, and it will come as no surprise to those that have followed her work since she was a teenager that Liejacker is as dense with natural smoky jazz mannerisms, fine folk details and stark soul-searching lyrics as anything she’s committed to record before. The humble consistency across these 12 original tracks, and one slightly obtuse but perfectly infectious country cover of Dead Or Alive’s "You Spin Me Round Like A Record", is particularly noticeable, surpassing even that of 2005’s feted major label debut Harpo’s Ghost. This record is much softer, less glossy, and knowingly less bold--suiting her reacquaintance with an independent label. Yet it still tugs as intently at your heartstrings with the willing, deeply set melodies evident through "Old Soul", an effective, wanting duet with Dave McCabe of The Zutons, the waltzing autumnal "Dance In New York" and woozy baritone jazz of "Wrong Side". In Liejacker she has crafted a record that fairly closely peers Kathryn Williams’ stirring Brit folk, or Beth Orton with weights around her dainty ankles. But it especially thrives on an often astonishingly powerful voice, exhibiting great range and echoing established talents like Annie Lennox or Alison Moyet. Fame surely can’t evade her forever, as this once again reminds that she leaves lightweights Katie Melua and Norah Jones in the shade every time. - amazon.com

V.A. - Essential Delta Blues (2009)

The Delta Blues style comes from a region in the southern part of Mississippi, a place romantically referred to as "the land where the blues were born." In its earliest form, the style became the first black guitar-dominated music to make it onto phonograph records back in the late '20s. Although many original Delta blues performers worked in a string-band context for live appearances, very few of them recorded in this manner. Consequently, the recordings from the late '20s through mid-'30s consist primarily of performers working in a solo, self-accompanied context. The form is dominated by fiery slide guitar and passionate vocalizing, with the deepest of feelings being applied directly to the music. Its lyrics are passionate as well, and in some instances remain the highest flowering of blues songwriting as stark poetry. The form continues to the present time with new performers working in the older solo artist traditions and style. - allmusic.com

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - I'm With You (2011)

Certain structural changes to the Chili Peppers should have affected the feel of their 10th studio album: guitarist John Frusciante has been replaced by fresh-faced Josh Klinghoffer, and bassist Flea has been studying musical theory. Yet business goes on essentially as usual across this collection of muscular funk-rock songs, though it falls short in the ultra-catchy-hooks department. Klinghoffer is less inventive than Frusciante, only breaking loose on The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie's string-snapping solo, but he's there with the big riffs when the songs call for them, while singer Anthony Kiedis excels himself in the forlornness stakes on a sweet tribute to a friend, Brendan's Death Song. There are a couple of unexpected bolt-ons – a carnival-huckster rap from Kiedis on Even You Brutus? and a hi-life trumpet workout on Did I let You Know, one of the most joyous love/lust songs they've produced – but I'm With You is basically more of the same.

TRACKS:
01. Monarchy of Roses 02. Factory of Faith 03. Brendan's Death Song 04. Ethiopia 05. Annie Wants a Baby 06. Look Around 07. The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie 08. Did I Let You Know 09. Goodbye Hooray 10. Happiness Loves Company 11. Police Station 12. Even You, Brutus? 13. Meet Me at the Corner 14. Dance, Dance, Dance

V.A. - American Music: The Hightone Records Story (2006)

Few if any other record labels have been as steadfastly dedicated to the propagation of American roots music as HighTone, the Oakland, CA based company launched in 1983 by Bruce Bromberg and Larry Sloven. Emerging during a period when MTV was just taking hold, and when radio and clubs concentrated on flashy, synthetic, post-punk and dance music, HighTone's founders shred, ignored the trends, and went about signing up one great Americana artist after another. The label couldn't have gotten off to a better start: Robert Cray's Bad Influence was a colossal achievement that almost single-handedly served notice that the blues was back in town (not that it had ever left), only under new management. Following its success, HighTone subsequently diversified, unleashing not only superb albums of modern blues but also no-nonsense folk, rock, country, and numerous subgenres thereof -- all of it, essentially, non-trendy, organic music created by both established and young upstarts. This four-CD/one-DVD collection is HighTone's well-deserved pat on its own back. The audio portion is sectioned into the four umbrellas of blues, rock, country and singer/songwriter/folk, under which a wildly diverse array of artists is showcased. Not all of the names here boast star quality while others do, but what they all share is a naturalness and directness -- not to mention honest-to-goodness songwriting, playing, and singing talent -- not often reflected in the sales charts or mainstream media. Rockabilly hero Billy Lee Riley, legendary folkie Ramblin' Jack Elliott (heard here with Tom Waits singing "Louise"), Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (rightly placed in the country section) and Joe Louis Walker may not, on the surface, seem to have much in common. Nor would Rosie Flores, surf god Dick Dale, Dave Alvin, or Buddy Miller (who is represented on the rock, country and singer/songwriter discs). But they do: they've all recorded for HighTone. The DVD gathers up music videos from the likes of Joe Ely, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, and several others. - allmusic.com

MIKE PLUME BAND - Song & Dance, Man (1999)

Combining the more anthemic elements of John Mellancamp with the visceral snarl of Steve Earle and the musical sheen of Tom Petty, Mike Plume Band is a true standout in an all too crowded roots rock idiom. The muscular driving rock of "Rattle the Cage," the fist pumping "Wind At My Back" and the excellent slide guitar in "Something to Say," which could easily pass for an Earle outtake, all add up to an album that carefully balances just the right amount of country twang and rock propulsiveness. The shuffling drums of the moody "If There Ever Was a Fool," the Neil Young-ish harmonica lead on "Alcohol," as well as the explosive rockabilly of "Rich Man" and the elements of dixie-land jazz on "Take Me With You" further showcase an impressive balance of mature songwriting and youthful exuberance. Everything taken into consideration, the level of tunefulness and unrestrained energy make Song & Dance, Man a true keeper. - allmusic.com

PORTER HALL TENNESSEE - Welcome to Porter Hall Tennessee (2002)

Whoever said hard country was dead hadn't heard Porter Hall, TN. Their songs evoke not even the '70s, but the rough-edged music of the '60s, including some of the best Parton-Wagoner duets. Molly Conley has a wonderfully strong voice - not someone you'd mess with - and she's also a consistently good writer, with both "Angel Without Wings" and "Halfway There (I'm Gone)" full of the hallmarks of classic country. Partner Gary Roadarmel is an equally good vocalist, although his best songs actually come from others, like "Screwed Blue" and "Golden Chain of Hate." As a band they might be quite ready to set the world on fire, yet too often the arrangements on songs are similar and not thought-out enough. But the rough edges are endearing and they're far from afraid of making real country music (which, sadly, some alt-country bands are). The elements are all in place - they just need to be refined with some more thought and experience, and this band could become a driving force in hard country. - allmusic.com

TRACKS:
01. Screwed Blue 02. Halfway There (I'm Gone) 03. Golden Chain of Hate 04. Angel Without Wings 05. Drunkard and the Angel 06. Don't Bury Me 07. Old Kentucky Home 08. Middle Tennessee 09. Slip Inside the House 10. Crosses to Hang 11. I've Got a Hedge 12. hiden track

DONOVAN - Donovan In Concert: The Complete 1967 Anaheim Show (2006)

This 1967 concert recorded at the Anaheim Convention Center, just a few weeks after his Hollywood Bowl show, was recorded in its entirety and released as a single LP with a total of 14 tracks. This double-disc CD reissue contains 23 tracks, and is, as it survives, the entire gig. In addition, the sound has been painstakingly remastered; the result is a brilliant sounding document. Flow in a Donovan concert is important, and here, presented as it occurred, listeners can drift right into the tidepool of magic. The band is a quintet with Harold McNair on flute and saxophones, Loren Newkirk on piano, Andy Tronosco on upright bass, Tony Carr on drums, and John Carr on bongos. Donovan plays acoustic guitar throughout. The hippy mysticism and flower power poet is everywhere here. This isn't rock star excess at all, but an organic, drenched-in-sunshine concert full of gentleness with a premium on good vibes. Tunes not on the original LP and CD issues include "Sunny Goodge Street," "Epistle to Derroll," "Sand and Foam," "Hampstead Incident," "To Try for the Sun," "Someone Singing," "The Tinker and the Crab," and a partial recording of the second half of "Catch the Wind," which was included for purposes of completion, but was marred by a malfunctioning tape recording. Donovan was already an expert at getting audiences to eat out of his hand, and here that happens in spades. In fact the only album that comes close to having the flow of this concert was the studio recording of Van Morrison's Astral Weeks. While it's true this is only available as an import, it should be sought out by any fan, or, for that matter, any cynic who hasn't heard this particularly beautiful and airy genius of Donovan Leitch. With this presentation, Donovan In Concert becomes one of the great live albums of the '60s. - cduniverse.com

"Donovan In Concert: The Complete 1967 Anaheim Show" is an expanded version of the Donovan In Concert album released in 1968. This version includes 4 unreleased tracks from the concert. There are other four tracks that weren't included in the older version, but were released previously in the 2005 compilation Try For The Sun: The Journey Of Donovan: Epistle To Derroll, To Try For The Sun, Someone Singing and The Tinker And The Crab.

ALAN JACKSON, GEORGE STRAIT, JIMMY BUFFETT - Live at Texas Stadium (2007) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Mega-stars Jackson, Strait, and Buffett joined together for the first time ever, Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Texas Stadium in Dallas. This must see concert turned into a party that Parrotheads, cowboys and the Lone Star State will never forget. With more than 120 million records sold, over 80 Number One singles and countless awards under their hats (or Hawaiian shirts), the superstars shared equal billing to showcase some of their biggest hits and fan favorites alone and together. The three of us have talked about doing this for some time, admits Strait We've had the pleasure of working with each other before and not only do we enjoy each other's music but we have a lot in common.

Appearing solo, in pairs, and all together, the three musical superstars present some of their best-known tunes, but they often shine the brightest when performing vintage numbers. Strait's sauntering version of "Milk Cow Blues" swings with laid-back charm, while the trio's lively rendition of the Hank Williams classic "Hey Good Lookin'" would undoubtedly make the late legend smile, and Buffett and Strait's gentle take on "Sea of Heartbreak" is simultaneously wistful and hopeful. A truly extraordinary live recording, this album is essential for dedicated fans of any and all these respected artists.

JOHN MAYALL & THE BLUESBREAKERS - Spinning Coin (1995)

Somehow the grandfather of British blues still had the fire in his belly to record a strong album almost 40 years after he began his storied career. Buddy Whittington acquits himself well as the latest in a long line of hotshot guitarists for this multi-instrumentalist, who still does his best work on harmonica. He still admires long-dead bluesman J.B. Lenoir, including "Voodoo Music" here. A lot of credit for this strong outing goes to R.S. Field, lyricist and sometime producer for Webb Wilder. "Long Story Short" would pass for a Wilder tune were it not for Mayall's distinctive voice.

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers: John Mayall (vocals, 6 and 12-string guitar, harmonica, piano, electric piano, organ, synthesizer); Buddy Whittington (acoustic & electric guitar); Rick Cortes (bass); Joe Yuele (drums, washboard, percussion).

TRACKS:
01. When The Devil Starts Crying 02. Spinning Coin 03. Ain't No Brakeman 04. Double Life Feelings 05. Run 06. What Passes For Love 07. Fan The Flames 08. Voodoo Music 09. Long Story Short 10. No Big Hurry 11. Remember This

BRYAN FERRY - Studio discography in '70...

From his earliest recordings with his group Roxy Music, at the beginning of the 1970s, Bryan Ferry has taken his place as one of the most iconic and innovative singers and lyricists to emerge in popular music. In his music you hear an original vocal brilliance which merges – with effortless, breathtaking elegance – the poise of Sinatra, the charisma of Gainsbourg and the intensity of Johnnie Ray. But then there was something extra – a quality of nuance, verve and performance which seemed so ultra-modern, and so refined, that it seemed to break wholly new ground.

1973 would be a year of extraordinary creativity and punishingly hard work for Bryan Ferry. In addition to his work with Roxy Music, he would record his first solo album ‘These Foolish Things’, which would showcase his founding love of classic rhythm & blues and rock & roll classics, but in a way which was entirely his own. The emotional intensity of Bryan Ferry’s vocal style can be heard to great effect on his epic interpretation of the Bob Dylan classic, ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’. This spectacularly theatrical, artistically defining opening track on ‘These Foolish Things’, released in 1973, would introduce what Ferry has described as his ‘ready-mades’; cover versions of recordings by artists whom he admires, which he then interprets in his own style. Like all great singers, he turns the cover version into a form of self portraiture. In the case of ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’, Ferry creates an astonishing fusion of racing energy and high sophistication – turning Dylan’s political allegory into a bravura display of snarling, swaggering cool. Bryan Ferry’s vocal genius lies in his peerless ability to merge musical styles – from French chanson, through classic crooner to hard edged rock – creating that sheen of pure drama which has become his artistic signature. This was the case with his thunderous, pulsing interpretation of the northern soul classic, ‘The In Crowd’, which became a hit for Ferry in 1974. Once again, Ferry takes the existing style of a recording and then creates an amplification of its entire tone and meaning. In this case, the effect of such interpretation is to create a cover version which has the sensuality of pure pop and the emotional sophistication of cinema. Indeed, Ferry’s interpretation of ‘The In Crowd’ has become an iconic statement about high fashion, high society and high living – the mythic soundtrack to the legend of the Jet Set. Bryan Ferry’s second solo album, ‘Another Time, Another Place’ would feature on its sleeve a photograph of the singer taken by Eric Boman. Dressed in a classic white tuxedo, during the blue light of the early evening cocktail hour, against a backdrop of sophisticated party goers gathered beside a swimming pool (one of whom was Ferry’s friend, Manolo Blahnik, the legendary shoe designer), this portrait – a modern update of the mythic glamour of The Great Gatsby – would become one of the defining images of not just Bryan Ferry’s career, but the history of popular culture. Throughout the middle and later years of the 1970s, Bryan Ferry recorded an unbroken series of aggressively modern, intoxicating cover versions – including two of his best loved tracks, ‘Shame Shame Shame’ and Wilbert Harrison’s ‘Let’s Stick Together’. Both of these tracks took strength from their pounding, mesmeric beat – which became the perfect chassis for Ferry’s vocal. More than any other singer of his generation, Bryan Ferry performs a song in such a way as to make it entirely his own. His vocal style brings a whole world to life, making each song a dramatic performance. ‘Tokyo Joe’, released in 1977, is a perfect example of Ferry at his most filmic. Inspired by a Hollywood musical from the 1930s, this track maintains a high energy, subterranean night club feel which often distinguishes the potent atmosphere of Ferry’s recordings. As also defined by his work with Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry’s solo work achieves a perfect tension between langour and melodrama, the results of which become a classic definition of high romance. Many of Ferry’s greatest songs describe the fate of the lonely, isolated romantic – always on the outside, even at the heart of the grandest party or the most exotic city. Ferry has said of himself, “I feel always to be on the inside looking out, or the outside looking in…” – the classic situation of the artist.

STEVE CROPPER - Dedicated: A Salute To The 5 Royales (2011)

Tribute records are a tricky things; star-studded tribute projects even more so. It takes a strong unifying voice, some central character beyond the featured composer, to save them from sounding like choppy compilations. Steve Cropper, on today's 429 Records release Dedicated, is that voice. Co-founder of Booker T and the MGs, and a key sessions player and producer on a host of seminal soul records for Stax and Atlantic, Cropper had long credited North Carolina's 5 Royales and their leader Lowman “Pete" Pauling with helping to shape his own sound and on-stage persona. So, the passion for this homage was there. But, more particularly, Cropper learned after a lifetime around big stars just when to assert himself.

Produced by Cropper and Jon Tiven (Wilson Pickett), they put together a session player dream team consisting of David Hood (bass), Spooner Oldham (piano/electric piano, organ), Steve Ferrone (drums), Steve Jordan (drums, percussion), Neal Sugarman (from the Dap Kings) and Tiven himself (saxophones). As word got out about the project, A-list guests signed on to contribute their talents such as Lucinda Williams, Brian May, Sharon Jones, Steve Winwood, John Popper, BB King, Bettye LaVette, Delbert McClinton, Buddy Miller, Shemekia Copeland and others.

MICK MARTIN - Doin' The Backseat Boogie (1991)

13. I Love My Baby
14. It’s Hard Going Up
15. Little By Little
16. Ridin’ On The L & N

White bluesman Mick Martin turns in a solid, workmanlike set of boogie and blues shuffles on this independent release. A fiery harp player and gruff vocalist, Martin's version of blues has a Midwestern feel to it, belying his West Coast location. In addition to singing and playing harmonica, Martin also wrote or co-wrote all the cuts on this album. Most are solid, muscular straight-ahead blues and blues-rock, and none is what might be called a dog. To be sure, Martin is still a club performer, not ready for the national scene. But "Doin' the Backseat Boogie" is a notch above most releases by regional artists, and is a very listenable album.

STRAY CATS

Formed Long Island, New York, 1979; disbanded, 1984; reformed several times since. If Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and Carl Perkins engaged in a drunken menage a trois and produced a musical offspring, the Stray Cats would be it. Formed in Long Island, New York during the late 70s, the band consisted of three high school friends. With Brian Setzer on guitar, Slim Jim Phantom (born James McDonnell) on drums and Lee Rocker (born Lee Drucher) on standup bass, the Stray Cats plowed some of the same fertile ground as their influences. The unit's sound was not some reanimated zombie from the '50s, though. There was a punk/new wave insurrection happening in New York at the time. The Stray Cats threw this into the mix and the resultant voodoo stew of neo-rockabilly was distilled into pure pop. The trio soon relocated to the United Kingdom, where pre-Buddy Holly rock n roll has never quite gone out of style. Some well received gigs brought them quick notoriety. Soon they were taken under Dave Edmund's wing. Roots rocker Edmunds would produce much of their subsequent work. In 1981 they released their debut album Stray Cats in Britian. Dusting off some rockabilly chestnuts and brewing up a batch of strong originals, the Stray Cats served notice that they delivered the real McCoy. Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker were an adequate rhythm section, but Brian Setzer's crackling guitar was defenitely the focus. Further, Setzer was capable of conjuring every rockabilly vocal trick in the book, from hiccups to growls. The Stray Cats soon issued another LP of classy songs and they returned to their homeland to crack the all-important American market, gaining exposure by opening for the Rolling Stones on their "Tattoo You" tour. The trio also appeared on the American television show, Fridays. Finally in 1982, the trio released their first album in the States, Built For Speed....

BREWER PHILLIPS - Homebrew (1996)

Brewer Phillips (1924 – 1999) was an American blues guitarist, chiefly associated with Chicago blues. Phillips was born on a plantation and learned the blues from Memphis Minnie at an early age. He relocated to Memphis and played with Bill Harvey, Roosevelt Sykes, and Hound Dog Taylor. Following Taylor's death in 1976, Phillips recorded under his own name, as well as playing with J. B. Hutto, Lil' Ed Williams, and Cub Koda amongst others. Phillips died of natural causes in August 1999, at the age of 74. - wikipedia

It's amazing to think that Brewer Phillips would be 70-plus years old before releasing his U.S. debut album, but after a couple of years in virtual seclusion, Delmark coaxed him back into the studio for this fine set. Phillips's regular working band is aboard with pianist Aaron Moore handling the bulk of the vocals, Magic Sam's drummer, Robert "Huckleberry Hound" Wright, and Willie Black on bass providing simple but effective support. Phillips sings on the Jimmy Reed classic "You Don't Have to Go," "Looking for a Woman" and "Lunch Bucket Blues" and his single string work is highlighted on the instrumental title track. A simple, laidback album with some surprising fireworks in all the unexpected places. - cduniverse.com

PAT TRAVERS - Stick With What You Know: Live In Europe (2007)

Patrick Henry "Pat" Travers is a Canadian rock guitarist, keyboardist and singer who began his recording career with Polydor Records in the mid-1970s. Pat Thrall, Nicko McBrain, Mick Dyche, Tommy Aldridge, Peter "Mars" Cowling, Jerry Riggs, and Carmine Appice are some of the noted musicians who have been members of the Pat Travers Band through the years. Kirk Hammett of Metallica has cited him as one of his favorite guitar players.

2007 album from the revered Blues/Rock guitarist Pat Travers, a truly brilliant live performance. Hard rocking Blues in the signature Pat Travers style: in your face and full of great fretwork. The songs include "Crash and Burn", "Heat in the Street" and "If I Had Possession over Judgment Day" amongst others. The sound is very live and very powerful and a fantastic addition to his already-impressive catalog. Recorded live at the Bosuil in Weert, The Nentherlands

ZAKK WYLDE - Book Of Shadows (1996)

Zakk Wylde is an American musician, songwriter, and occasional actor who is best known as the former guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne and founder of the heavy metal band Black Label Society. He was the lead guitarist and vocalist in Pride & Glory, who released one self-titled album in 1994 before disbanding. As a solo artist he released "Book of Shadows" in 1996.

"Book of Shadows" is the first solo album by the heavy metal guitarist Zakk Wylde. The album was first released in 1996, and was reissued by Spitfire in 1999 with the bonus disc containing "Evil Ways" (the Japanese bonus track from the album's original release), "The Color Green", and "Peddlers of Death" (an acoustic version of a track that features on Black Label Society's Sonic Brew). Unlike his work with Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society, here Zakk Wylde shows a different side to his music; an introspective and mostly acoustic style recalling many of the lighter moments from his previous project, Pride & Glory as well as classic folk rock artists such as Neil Young.

TRACKS:
01. Between Heaven And Hell 02. Sold My Soul 03. Road Back Home 04. Way Beyond Empty 05. Throwin' It All Away 06. What You're Look'n For 07. Dead As Yesterday 08. Too Numb To Cry 09. The Things You Do 10. 1,000,000 Miles Away 11. I Thank You Child 12. Evil Ways (bonus track)

DOC HOLLIDAY - 25 Absolutely Live (2008)

Doc Holliday, named of course after legendary Wild West character, hails from Macon, Georgia and released couple classic southern rock albums in early 80’s. Although they never got the recognition they deserved in Unites States, Doc Holliday was a hugely successful in Europe. Early days of this southern rocks hidden gem can be traced to beginning of 70’s, when the band leader Bruce Brookshire formed a band called Roundhouse which would later transform into Doc Holliday. Although southern rock losing its momentum in early 80’s, with little help from Molly Hatchet management, they got signed by A&M records. With legendary line-up of Brookshire and Rick Skelton on guitars, John Samuelson on bass, Eddie Stone on keyboards and Herman Nixon on drums they released self titled debut album on early 1981 and managed to break into top #30 chats. Through relentless touring with groups like The Outlaws and The Charlie Daniels Band, Doc Holliday gained new fans and later that same year they put out Doc Holliday Rides Again which turned out to be even more successful album. Disaster strike in 1983, when Doc Holliday decided to record their third album, 80’s pop oriented Modern Medicine in Germany. It wasn’t the kind of medicine southern rock fans were looking for, it sold poorly and band broke up soon after that. After three year hiatus, Doc Holliday got their act together and released Danger Zone, more traditional approach to southern rock genre. Over the years they have released several albums for small European record labels, which are difficult to find from the States, but well worth hunting down for. Doc Holliday remains popular touring act in old continent, especially in Germany.

Almost 20 years after the milestone that is "Song for the Outlaw Live" Doc Holliday came up with an impressive document of their versatility on stage. No edits, changes or overdubs were made by producer Tom Hallek, to make "25 - absolutely live" sound exactly that.

BEAU BRUMMELS - Bradley's Barn - Expanded Edition, Rhino (2011)

The Beau Brummels were an American rock band, formed in San Francisco in 1964. The band's original lineup included Sal Valentino (lead vocals), Ron Elliott (lead guitar), Ron Meagher (bass guitar), Declan Mulligan (rhythm guitar, bass, harmonica), and John Petersen (drums). The Beau Brummels were discovered by local disc jockeys who were looking to sign acts to their new label, Autumn Records, where Sylvester Stewart—later known as Sly Stone—produced the group's early recording sessions. Initially, the band's musical style blended beat music and folk music and typically drew comparisons to The Beatles, while their later work incorporated other music genres such as psychedelic rock and country rock.

Bradley's Barn is the fifth studio album by American rock group The Beau Brummels. Released in October 1968, it contains the singles "Long Walking Down to Misery" and "Cherokee Girl." The album has received critical acclaim as an early example of country rock. Bradley's Barn is actually a recording studio in Nashville owned by Owen Bradley notable, for example, for the first (1956) professional Buddy Holly recordings. In June 2011 the album was re-issued by Rhino Homemade as a deluxe hardback set, expanded to two discs that include alternate takes, unreleased songs and an October 1968 radio interview with the two band mmembers.

LENNY KRAVITZ - Black And White America (2011)

For his ninth album, Lenny Kravitz found much of his inspiration close to home. In fact, the very spirit of "Black and White America" came from the locations in which the music was made from a tiny, 400-person community in the Bahamas to the streets of Paris. And out of his experiences as a true citizen of the planet, his first new songs in three years became the most personal and diverse collection of his career. "No doubt, my environment definitely lends a lot to the creative process," he says. Black and White America was written in reaction to a documentary Kravitz saw about racism in the post-Obama United States. Amidst the defiant lyrics, the songwriter references his own family history, and the experiences of his parents as an interracial couple in the 1960s. Though the sonic emphasis of Black and White America may land squarely on the funk, the force behind such guitar-driven smashes as "Fly Away" and "Are You Gonna Go My Way" hasn't turned his back on rock. Songs like "Rock Star City Life," and the first single, "Stand," give the album a healthy dose of crunching riffs. The overwhelming emotion on Black and White America is the feel of optimism, faith and hope. - music.is-amazing.com

CHUCK BROWN & EVA CASSIDY - The Other Side (1992)

Only in America could an album like this have come together: Eva Cassidy, a young vocalist who, had she lived, might have gone on to become her generation's favorite song interpreter, trading verses with Chuck Brown, seasoned godfather of the D.C. underground funk movement known as go-go. By the time this was recorded in 1992, the go-go trend had long since peaked for Brown, while the twentysomething Cassidy was still an unknown local session vocalist. Yet, on this set of standards, the two collaborate as if they were picking up where they'd left off decades earlier, from easy-riding versions of "Let the Good Times Roll" and "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You" to near-definitive renditions of "Over the Rainbow" and "Dark End of the Street." And while it's easy to focus on the posthumously acclaimed Cassidy, Brown's haunting solo turn on "You Don't Know What Love Is" sests that unjustly overlooked talents are still making music in the shadows of our nation's capital. - amazon.com

THE SAVAGE ROSE - Babylon (1972)

One of the most well-known rock groups from Continental Europe, Denmark's Savage Rose recorded a wealth of intriguing and eclectic progressive rock in the late '60s and '70s. In their early work, one hears faint echoes of the Airplane, Doors, Pink Floyd, and other psychedelic heavyweights combined with classical jazz and Danish-Euro folk elements. Their arrangements rely heavily on an incandescent, watery organ that sounds like nothing so much as psychedelic aquarium music. The most striking aspect of the band's sound, however, was the vocals of lead singer Annisette. Her childish wispy and sensual phrasing can suddenly break into jarring, almost histrionic wailing, like a Janis Joplin with Yoko Ono-isms, and eerily foreshadows Kate Bush's style. Stars in their native land, Savage Rose also achieved a bit of underground success abroad, and several of their albums were released in North America. Between 1968 and 1978, the group released nine albums, moving from vaguely psychedelic rock and the heavily gospel-influenced Refugee to the nearly classical ballet score Dodens Triumf and the folky, nearly all-Danish Solen Var Ogsa Din (their first eight albums were sung entirely in English).

With contributions by noted jazz saxophonist Ben Webster and the American gospel quintet the Stars of Faith, this is (along with Refugee) their most R&B-influenced recording, at times achieving a churchy, old-time New Orleans-like feel. - allmusic.com

MERRILEE RUSH AND THE TURNABOUTS - Angel Of The Morning (1968) [2004 Remastred]

Merrilee Rush is an American singer, best known for her recording of the song "Angel of the Morning", a Top 10 song which earned her a Grammy nomination for Female Vocalist Of The Year in 1968. The band "Merrilee Rush and the Turnabouts" was formed in 1965. One member of the group's road crew worked for Paul Revere and the Raiders, which was doing a tour of southern states in 1967, and through this connection, Revere, Raiders lead vocalist Mark Lindsay, and the other Raiders invited Rush to be their opening act.

Rush's version of "Angel of the Morning" was recorded in Memphis, Tennessee, in early 1968, and was produced by Chips Moman and the late Tommy Cogbill. Released by the Bell Records company, in late June 1968, the song climbed to #7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it reportedly reached the #1 spot in seven countries. The one millionth sale of this record was reported by the Recording Industry Association of America (R.I.A.A.) in 1970. The "Angel Of The Morning" sessions were recorded at Chips Moman's American Studio in Memphis and featured the same musicians who played on Elvis Presley's famous Memphis recordings. The song "Angel of the Morning" was written and composed by the songwriter Chip Taylor (the younger brother of the actor Jon Voight and the uncle of the actress Angelina Jolie). Taylor had also written and composed "Wild Thing," a hit for The Troggs in 1966, and "I Can't Let Go," a hit for The Hollies in the United Kingdom. Rush's recording of "Angel of the Morning" was featured prominently in the movie, Girl, Interrupted, for which Jolie won an Academy Award. "Angel of the Morning" has also been featured in the major motion pictures Jerry Maguire and Fingers starring Harvey Keitel. - wikipedia

GUY CLARK - Old No.1 (1975) & Texas Cookin (1976)

Guy Clark is an American Texas Country artist. In his career, he has released more than twenty albums, primarily on major labels. He has also written singles for other artists, including Ricky Skaggs, Steve Wariner and Rodney Crowell.

In 1975, after using his big eraser on his first try at cutting an album, Clark made his recording debut on RCA Records with Old No. l, ten critically applauded originals built to last, including "L. A. Freeway," "Desperados Waiting for a Train," "Texas, l947," "Instant Coffee Blues," "Rita Ballou," "She Ain't Goin' Nowhere," "Let Him Roll," "A Nickel for the Fiddler," "That Old Time Feeling" and "Like a Coat From the Cold." On the cover, the songwriter is pictured with his wife's painting of his chambray "work shirt," customary attire emblematic of his values. During the next 20 years, Clark would continue to record albums that worked like a stun gun on other artists in search of new songs. The weaponry included Texas Cookin' (1976), Guy Clark (1978), The South Coast of Texas (1981), Better Days (1983), Old Friends (1989), Boats to Build (1992), Dublin Blues (1995), Keepers - a Live Recording (1997), Cold Dog Soup (1999) and The Dark (2002). LINDISFARNE - Back And Fourth (1978)

This was the band's comeback album after a fairly dire patch in the mid-'70s. The fact is, Back and Fourth (originally issued by Polygram) isn't really that good a record, lacking the imagination and spirit of experimentation that highlighted their early albums for Charisma. But at its best, it was smoothly commercial, standing next to those earlier albums roughly where the Bee Gees' early disco stuff stood next to material like Odessa. And it was a success, mostly thanks to the presence of Alan Hull's best song to date, the Springsteen-like "Run for Home." With its original lineup back together, Lindisfarne went for the gold this time, building their music on folk-like melodies (and a distinctly American sound, at that), country-type hooks ("King's Cross Blues"), and pleasing harmonies, exemplified by "Warm Feeling," where the group sounds like an earthier, edgier Firefall. Alan Hull's writing also took on a trans-Atlantic character -- gone was the distinct English character of songs like "Fog on the Tyne," and in its place was a poppier American sound, with some brief, embarrassing digressions into funky R&B ("Get Wise"). "Woman," whose subject is no more ambitious than its title, would have been an embarrassment to Lindisfarne during the early '70s, but it was the kind of sound that didn't offend radio programmers, and "Run for Home" became a familiar track on FM radio even in America, where the band had scarcely made any impression in earlier years. Producer Gus Dudgeon kept the instrumentation simple and the sound pretty much rooted in midtempo rock, and the result was a pleasing collection of new tunes. - answers.com

THE YARDBIRDS - As, Bs & EPs (2007)

The Yardbirds are an English rock band that had a string of hits in the mid 1960s, including "For Your Love", "Over Under Sideways Down" and "Heart Full of Soul". The group is notable for having started the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, all of whom were in the top fifteen of Rolling Stone's 100 Top Guitarists list (Clapton as #4, Page as #9, and Beck as #14).[1] A blues-based band that broadened its range into pop and rock, The Yardbirds were pioneers in guitar innovations of the '60s: fuzz tone, feedback, distortion, backwards echo, improved amplification, etc. Pat Pemberton, writing for Spinner, holds that the Yardbirds were "the most impressive guitar band in rock music".[2] After the Yardbirds broke up in 1968, their current lead guitarist Jimmy Page founded what became Led Zeppelin. The bulk of the band's most successful self-written songs came from bassist/producer Paul Samwell-Smith who, with singer/harmonica player Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarty and rhythm guitarist/bassist Chris Dreja, constituted the core of the group. The band reformed in the 1990s, featuring McCarty, Dreja and new members. The Yardbirds were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

This two-disc set features the entire roster of single and EP releases from the pioneering U.K. band the Yardbirds, from its formation in 1963 to its breakup in 1968. Covers of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" show the group's bluesy origins, the pop-oriented "Heart Full of Soul" and "For Your Love" display its emergence as a fully-fledged commercial entity, and such later psychedelic concoctions as "Over Under Sideways Down" and "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" highlight both its versatility and the instrumental chops of band members and future guitar heroes Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

STEVE MILLER BAND - Young Hearts: Complete Greatest Hits (2003 Limited Edition)

The Steve Miller Band is an American rock band formed in 1967 in San Francisco, California. The band is managed by Steve Miller on guitar and lead vocals, and is known for a string of (mainly) mid-1970s hit singles that are staples of the classic rock radio format. In September of 2003, Steve Miller released his fifth compilation entitled "Young Hearts: Complete Greatest Hits". Steve Miller for 35 plus years has created a lot of classic rock and roll gems, album favorites and hit singles. For years, Capitol Records wanted Steve to release a re-issue of his classic 1978 greatest hits album Greatest Hits 1974-78 but he was not easily persuaded until 2003 when he decided to put out Young Hearts. This compilation is the only compilation, not counting the 1994 3-CD box set (also known as The Pegasus box set), to cover every era of Steve Miller's career from 1968-2003. All songs were digital remastered to give a good feeling of how it should sound. The Limited Edition has a 2nd disc which adds 3 more songs to the 22 present on the first one.

CROSBY, STILLS & NASH - Allies (1983)

Originally released in 1983, ALLIES is a live album by Crosby, Stills and Nash that was largely recorded on the tour for 1982's DAYLIGHT AGAIN, though versions of David Crosby's "Shadow Captain" and Joni Mitchell's "He Played Real Good For Free" date from a 1977 concert. Rather than being a traditional live collection of hits, ALLIES consists mostly of relatively obscure songs, with only Nash's "Wasted on the Way" and Stills's Buffalo Springfield hit "For What It's Worth" being particularly well-known. The album opens with two studio recordings, an outtake from DAYLIGHT AGAIN called "Raise A Voice" and "War Games," a Stills-penned song written for but ultimately not used in the 1983 thriller of the same name.

Unavailable in the U.S.! UK reissue of this album from David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, originally released in 1983. Primarily a live album, Allies did feature some 'new' studio recordings including 'Raise A Voice' and 'War Games' (initially the theme to the film of the same name but cut from the film). 10 tracks including 'For What It's Worth', 'Dark Star' and more. Rhino. - cduniverse.com

V.A. - The Best Of The American Folk Blues Festivals '63-'67 (1986)

The American Folk Blues Festival was a music festival that toured Europe beginning in 1962. German jazz publicist Joachim-Ernst Berendt first had the idea of bringing original African-American blues performers to Europe. Jazz had become very popular, and rock and roll was just gaining a foothold, and both genres drew influences directly back to the blues. Berendt thought that European audiences would flock to concert halls to see them in person. Promoters Horst Lippmann and Fritz Rau brought this idea to reality. By contacting Willie Dixon, an influential blues composer and bassist from Chicago, they were given access to the blues culture of the southern United States. The first festival was held in 1962, and they continued almost annually until 1972, after an eight-year hiatus reviving the festival in 1980 until its final performance in 1985.

The concerts featured some of the leading blues artists of the 1960s, such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and Sonny Boy Williamson, some playing in unique combinations such as T-Bone Walker playing guitar for pianist Memphis Slim, Otis Rush with Junior Wells, Sonny Boy Williamson with Muddy Waters. The Festival DVDs include the only known footage of Little Walter, and rare recordings of John Lee Hooker playing harmonica. Attendees of the first London festivals are believed to include such influential musicians as Mick Jagger, Eric Burdon, Eric Clapton, and Steve Winwood, who were the primary movers in the blues explosion that would lead to the British Invasion. Sonny Boy Williamson's visit to London with the 1963 festival led to him spending a year in Europe including recording the Sonny Boy Williamson and The Yardbirds album , and recording with The Animals. Sites where the festival was held included London, Hamburg, Paris, and others. - wikipedia

V.A. - Blues Busters Volume 1 & 2 (1993 - 1994)

If the people from Rounder Records are known for anything it's their great taste for music. After 20 years of building an extensive and very versatile catalogue Rounder Records felt a need to start a separate label devoted to blues and related music.

As Marian Leighton Levy explained in 1990: "We want to let people know about the great diversity of experession in the blues. Today the music is not limited to Chicago blues or delta blues or country blues as it was during the folk boom of the sixties. Bullseye blues' artist roster and repertoire will be as diverse, pluralistic and rich as the whole spectrum of blues styles, young and old, black and white, country and city". And that's exactly what the Bullseye catalogue in 1993 is all about.

This "Blues Busters" sempler will give you a small taste of the big pye. Feel free to get some more.

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT - S/T & Poses (1998 - 2001)

1998 - Rufus Wainwright
In 1998, the music industry was inundated with recordings by the offspring of '60s and '70s icons. Chris Stills, Sean Lennon, Emma Townshend; nepotism ran unchecked, with varying degrees of aesthetic and commercial success. Rufus Wainwright, scion of acerbic singer/songwriter Loudon Wainwright and Canadian songstress Kate McGarrigle, may share a nasal vocal drawl with his father, but the songs here are closer to Brian Wilson, Randy Newman or Harry Nilsson than Loudon or Kate. The Newman/Wilson connection is underlined by the skewed, neo-Baroque string arrangements and co-production of Van Dyke Parks, whose sensibility seems to mesh perfectly with Wainwright's piano-based tunes. Wainwright's debut finds him exercising considerable harmonic and compositional chops in the service of a vision that's closer in spirit to some of the eccentric, decidedly non-rock singer-songwriters of the early '70s (like those mentioned above) than anything current. His gift for the extended melodic line serves him well here. Lyrically, Wainwright is able to combine unsentimental passion with unpretentious imagery; no mean feat, even for veteran troubadours. This recording, substantive and rewarding as it is, portends a bright future. - cduniverse.com
TRACKS:
01. Foolish Love 02. Danny Boy 03. April Fools 04. In My Arms 05. Millbrook 06. Baby 07. Beauty Mark 08. Barcelona 09. Matinee Idol 10. Damned Ladies 11. Sally Ann 12. Imaginary Love

2001 - Poses
When Rufus Wainwright first appeared on the music scene, the public was startled not only by the fact that this son of legendary musicians (a McGarrigle Sister and papa Loudon) was a true artist in his own right, but that he had a sound that set him so far apart from any of his contemporaries. Wainwright's second record POSES doesn't need to blaze any new stylistic ground since he's already so distinctively operating in his own furrow. The album pretty much picks up where its predecessor left off, offering elaborate, piano-based melodies that owe more to Tin Pan Alley (or at their most modern, Brian Wilson) than to any contemporaneous trend. The arrangements are rich with unusual harmonies, which serve Wainwright's unusual voice and lyrics extremely well. His high, keening tenor lets loose a torrent of self-effacing lyrics that examine his own place in the world with a cynic's mind and a believer's heart. The cynic, represented mostly by the witty turns of phrase, spends most of POSES battling it out with the believer, given voice by the lustrous melodic turns. Here's hoping they keep their aesthetically rewarding conflict going for a long time to come. - cduniverse.com

JIMMIE VAUGHAN - Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites...

2011 - Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites
The blues-rock master's first album in nine years! Blues, Ballads and Favorites is blues-rock pioneer Jimmie Vaughan's tribute to the music that inspired him, with covers of songs by Little Richard, Jimmy Reed, Roy Milton, Roscoe Gordon and others. The album was recorded in Austin, Texas, and features legendary blues singer Lou Ann Barton on two tracks. Other highlights include a brand-new instrumental, "Comin' & Goin'," and a version of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" featuring vocals by Bill Willis, the famed Hammond organ player who recorded with James Brown and Bill Doggett. Vaughan founded the iconic Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1974, and they became famous for the high-octane blues-rock sound that earned them critical acclaim in the '70s and platinum-selling albums in the '80s. In 1990, Vaughan recorded a duets album, Family Style, with his brother, Stevie Ray Vaughan, shortly before the latter's untimely death, and then went on to a successful solo career. - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. The Pleasures All Mine 02. Come Love 03. I'm Leaving It Up To You 04. Comin' And Goin' 05. Wheel Of Fortune 06. How Can You Be So Mean 07. Just A Little Bit 08. Miss You So 09. RM Blues 10. Roll Roll Roll 11. Send Me Some Lovin' 12. She's Got The Blues For Sale 13. Funny How Time Slips Away

2011 - Plays More Blues, Ballads & Favorites
Jimmie Vaughan waited nine years before releasing last year’s Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites, but it took only 12 more months to come back with a follow-up. The older brother and mentor to the late and enormously popular blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Vaughan has played a major role for decades in carrying on blues traditions himself. The second volume of cover versions from the Texan guitarist proves as entertaining as last year's collection of vintage R&B and early rock'n'roll. Founder of the Fabulous Thunderbirds (and big brother to the late Stevie Ray), Vaughan yokes his stinging, minimalist guitar to a driving band laden with growling saxes. Standards such as Amos Milburn's "Bad Bad Whiskey" mix with unusual takes of Hank Williams and Ray Charles numbers as Vaughan switches between up-tempo rockers and down-hearted blues and his vocal sidekick, Lou Ann Barton, adds sass. An old master at play.
TRACKS:
01. I Ain't Never 02. No Use Knocking 03. Teardrop Blues 04. I Hang My Head and Cry 05. It's Been A Long Time 06. Breaking Up Is Hard To Do 07. What Makes You So Tough 08. Greenbacks 09. I'm In The Mood For You 10. I Ain't Gonna Do It No More 11. Cried Like A Baby 12. Oh Oh Oh 13. I'm A Love You 14. The Rains Came 15. Bad Bad Whiskey 16. Shake A Hand

BEN HALL - Ben Hall! (2011)

Within the first eight bars of “Cannonball Rag,” the Merle Travis classic that kicks off Ben Hall’s debut album, you know you’re listening to a master of “thumbstyle” guitar. Hall plays with a magical combination of relaxed swing and relentless drive that is as inviting as it is rare. Producer Eric “Roscoe” Ambel kept the recording live and spare, so the sparkling sound of Hall’s ’90s Gretsch Country Classic (which he used on every track, despite the cool Tele-style Wallace pictured on the album cover) rings out cleanly. Accompanied on some songs by appropriately shuffling drums and gently thumping upright bass, Hall moves with authority and grace through this collection of mostly instrumental classics, putting his own stamp on each. Hall’s rendition of “Windy & Warm,” for instance, is slower and more pensive than the bouncier versions popularized by Chet Atkins and Doc Watson. Expect to hear a lot more from this extraordinary 22-year-old fingerpicker. - premierguitar.com

VANDENBERG - Discography

The Dutch hard rock band Vandenberg was created by Enschede native Adje "Adrian" van den Berg (best known for his tenure as one of the guitarists in Whitesnake during their successful late 1980s period) in 1981 as he had left his former band Teaser. At this time Adrian was already a veteran in the local rock scene, having performed and recorded with a number of bands such as Darling, Mother Of Pearl and Magic Box. He had also served as a backing musician for Pointer Sisters on a German tour. Following the split with Teaser, Adrian auditioned for Thin Lizzy but failing to impress them enough he ended up forming his own band Vandenberg. A demo attracted the attention of Atlantic Records who were tipped off by Def Leppard manager Peter Mensch. A&R man Phil Carson signed the band following a gig in Hilversum. An eponymous album was quickly recorded at Jimmy Page's Sol studios in Berkshire, England, Adrian himself paiting the album cover as he did on subsequent recordings.

Charting in the Netherlands, Vandenberg supported the Michael Schenker Group in the UK in 1982, followed by a support slot on an Ozzy Osbourne US tour. 1984 saw the band headlining a Japanese tour. At this point David Coverdale of Whitesnake had taken notice in Adrian's skills as a musician and song writer and tried hard to persuade him to join his band. At first his attempts were futile but eventually he would become part of the legendary British hard rock band in 1987, resulting in the end of Vandenberg.

HUMBLE PIE LIVE

HUMBLE PIE - Live At The Whisky A-Go-Go '69 (2002)
As one of the premier British "boogie" bands of the late '60s/early '70s, it's widely agreed by classic rock enthusiasts that Humble Pie was best experienced in its natural habitat, the concert stage. HP was already the subject of several live albums from this era (most notably the classic 1971 release PERFORMANCE: ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE) when 2002 saw the release of an archival live recording, LIVE AT THE WHISKEY A-GO-GO '69. This early phase of the band is usually regarded as the group's finest, as singer/guitarist Steve Marriott had the perfect foil in the form of Peter Frampton, just prior to Frampton launching his solo career. While Marriott's bluesy and soulful voice was usually the talk of Humble Pie, Frampton proves to be a woefully underrated guitarist throughout, as he reels off countless tasty riffs and leads, especially on the album's two longest tracks, a 12-and-a-half minute take of "Shakin' All Over" and a jamfest version of "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" nearly twice that length. Recorded live at The Whiskey A-Go-Go, Los Angeles, California in December 1969.
TRACKS:
01. For Your Love 02. Shakin' All Over 03. Hallelujah I Love Her So 04. The Sad Bag Of Shakey Jake 05. I Walk On Gilded SplintersPlaying Time

HUMBLE PIE - In Concert (1995)
Recorded on May 6, 1973 at San Francisco's Winterland Theater, King Biscuit Flower Hour: In Concert presents the post-Peter Frampton era of Humble Pie, featuring guitarist Dave Clempson backing what was by then Steve Marriott's vehicle. Marriott is in full cry on this recording, dering his soulful, ingratiatingly over-the-top take on R&B-based hard rock with plenty of spirit; he even sings the between-song audience banter. In concert, Humble Pie displayed a ferocity that was sometimes missing from their studio albums, and King Biscuit Flower Hour not only captures that quality perfectly, it also does so arguably better than any other album in the group's discography.
TRACKS:
01. Up Your Sleeves 02. 4 Day Creep 03. C'Mon Everybody 04. Honky Tonk Woman 05. Stone Cold Fever

CHRIS SMITHER - Leave The Light On (2006)

This album's title cut finds the veteran folk-blues troubadour, now in his early 60s, pondering the possibility of living to be 100, thus setting the thematic tone for an uncommonly reflective, meditative set. The ragtime Zen of "Open Up," the philosophical "Seems So Real," and the rock-bottom despair in his cover of Peter Case's "Cold Trail Blues" all sest that the virtuosic fingerpicker and evocatively smoky vocalist has reached a point in his life where he's pondering the biggest issues of mortality, a perspective that informs the complex relationship in "Father's Day." Not all of the material is that introspective, as the uptempo, electric rock of "Diplomacy" is as sardonic as Randy Newman, while "Origin of the Species" encapsulates Adam and Eve, Charles Darwin, and intelligent design. Smither also pays homage to two seminal influences, transforming Bob Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" into an acoustic, accordion-laced waltz and reviving Lightnin' Hopkins's version of the traditional "Blues in the Bottle." Ollabelle provide harmonies on two cuts, with mandolinist Tim O' Brien also offering instrumental and vocal support. - amazon.com

CHRIS SMITHER - Time Stands Still (2009)

Chris Smither is an American folk/blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. His music draws deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets and philosophers.

Four decades of music mastery and songwriting craft come together on Chris Smither's latest collection, Time Stands Still - a gripping mix of originals and potent covers. The new collection puts the exclamation point on a legendary career that shows no signs of slowing down. On the contrary, this blues and folk superstar continues to build creative momentum. His latest effort features a slew of tunes stripped down to their essence, shining the spotlight on Smither's understated power as a songwriter -one who taps into emotions at their most elemental and powerful core. It's a reminder why artists as diverse as Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris and Diana Krall have mined Smither's catalog in the past. He's teamed with producer and guitarist David "Goody" Goodrich and drummer Zak Trojano to create a simple, yet emotionally powerful musical landscape upon which to paint his blues and folk-fueled narra- tives. As always, Smither's signature finger-picking style mixes with his whiskey-meets-honey vocals to deliver intensely honest meditations on life, love and loss. Smither's 11th studio album was recorded in just three days and captures the vibrant urgency and immediacy of his live shows. It features eight original compositions as well as covers from Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, and 1920s country-blues songster Frank Hutchison. - amazon.com

LOS LOBOS - The Ride (2004) & Ride This: The Covers EP (2004)

More than two decades into their recording career (discounting their private-press 1970s debut album), Los Lobos still kick up an earthy mix of rock, funk, blues, and pan-Latin rhythms. Generally, few bands are more self-contained than this L.A. quintet, with its multi-instrumentalists and three powerful songwriters, but, for THE RIDE, the door to the outside world has opened up. More than half the songs here are collaborations with artists who've gained Los Lobos' respect--their heroes, peers, and disciples. Dave Alvin, a contemporary of the band on the L.A. scene as guitarist for the Blasters, joins in on the Tex-Mex-flavored "Somewhere in Time." Cafe Tacuba, an eclectic Rock en Espanol band that probably picked up a few tricks from the Wolves, adds to the churning polyrhythms of "La Venganza de Los Pelados." R&B legend Bobby Womack brings his soulful wail to a medley of "Wicked Rain" (first recorded on KIKO) and his own '70s classic "Across 110th Street." Even as Los Lobos move into the future, THE RIDE places a pleasing sonic framework around their musical neighborhood's present and past.

Los Lobos are, quite simply, one of America's great rock bands, and versatile enough to put their stamp on practically any sort of music they choose. Anyone looking for proof of this assertion ought to pick up Ride This: The Covers EP, in which the band runs through seven tunes from other artists, most of which were recorded during the sessions for Los Lobos' fine 2004 album, The Ride. Rambling from the late-night creep of Tom Waits' "Jockey Full of Bourbon" to the primal roots rock wail of the Blasters' "Marie Marie," Ride This finds East L.A.'s finest sounding tough, passionate, and soulful throughout. Top honors here go to their emotional take on Thee Midniters' "It'll Never Be Over for Me" (featuring a glorious vocal from Cesar Rosas) and the menacing rumble of Richard Thompson's "Shoot Out the Lights," which -- unlike most covers of Thompson's work -- features a guitar player nearly as gifted as RT himself, the estimable David Hidalgo. On all seven tunes, Los Lobos honor the spirit of the originals while putting their own spin on the material, and show that they're one band whose top-shelf chops never get in the way of making honest, soul-satisfying music. Not quite an essential Los Lobos release (these guys are still at their best on their own fine songs), Ride This: The Covers EP is still a treat for fans, or anyone who likes to hear a world-class rock band playing some really great songs. - cduniverse.com

ANA POPOVIC - Unconditional (2011)

"Unconditional" is Ana Popovic's third album for Eclecto Groove Records which finds the fiery guitarist in top form as she takes a back to the roots approach with what promises to be her most blues oriented recording to date. The album was recorded in New Orleans with Grammy-award winning producer John Porter, who previously worked with Ana on her smashing U. S. label debut Still Making History, and features some very talented special guests including Louisiana slide guitarist Sonny Landreth and harmonica virtuoso Jason Ricci. The cover is a stunner, with Ana stripped bare and the CD itself promises musically to be back to the bare blues essentials too.

Of the album’s twelve songs, eight are originals by Popovic from which two co-written by writing partner Mark van Meurs. Also on the album, songs from the rich blues history done by some of Ana's favorites, like Koko Taylore, Buddy Guy, Otis Span, Nina Simone and Sugar Pie DeSanto. “The title Unconditional, Ana explains, "describes what I feel on stage. That place is simply unconditional. It is magical. It’s just me and my guitar, notes, sounds and drum grooves. I let the band lift me up, and I feed off of their energy. I hate to think when playing. I only feel. Unconditional is how I stand towards my music -it’s mine, it’s sacred, and it’s with no boundaries. Absolute, definite. I tend to put everything I have into it and don’t let anything or anyone get in between, except the people that truly inspire me."

THEA GILMORE - John Wesley Harding (2011)

"Should one attempt to reinterpret a 40-year-old, somewhat legendary piece of work? Probably not," writes English folkie Thea Gilmore. Nonetheless, as Bob Dylan's 70th birthday approaches, she has covered his album John Wesley Harding in its entirety as a tribute. The man himself will probably be tickled by her faithfulness to the original's sense of solitude; reflectiveness is something Gilmore does well, in a voice that becomes more beautifully burnished by the year. But even armed with that voice, and a country-folk band who respond with sensitivity to her every inflection, what can she add? There are some triumphs: accompanied by finger-picked guitar on I Am a Lonesome Hobo, she's a lost soul; the autumnal weariness of Dear Landlord is equally affecting. But All Along the Watchtower is sleepy and slow, negating the lyric's urgency, and so it goes. Gilmore is always worth hearing, but this one is for completists only. - guardian.co.uk

JACK CASADY - Dream Factor (2003)

Jack Casady first came to fame as an original member of the Jefferson Airplane and later, Hot Tuna. The first solo album (at age 59) from this well-traveled and prolific bassist, Dream Factor, is a mixed affair. Unlike most rock bass-playing frontmen, Casady does not sing, so his contributions to his debut are relegated to the occasional bass solo, and as co-writer of nearly all the tracks. His bass playing is more innovative and inspirational than his songwriting, which results in a passable Southern rock, folk, and blues album. Casady calls in friends from Gov't Mule (drummer Matt Abts and guitarist Warren Haynes), along with Little Feat guitarist Paul Barrére, Ivan Neville, and the Tubes' Fee Waybill, among others, to help with vocals, and all do an admirable job, but ultimately, the album rests on the strength of its songs, most of which are pleasant, vaguely West Coast folk-pop ballads. When Casady steps out on the burning instrumental jazz-rock fusion "Outside" (which also features Haynes), and again in the middle section of the folksy "Weight of Sin," you get a true sense of his unique bass-playing talents. ~ cduniverse.com

LES PAUL & FRIENDS - A Tribute To A Legend (2008)

Les Paul & Friends-A Tribute To A Legend is a fitting honor to the genre-crossing icon with an eclectic collection of musicians spanning the musical spectrum. From the hard hitting thunder of Joe Bonamassa party rock guitar, to the fluid almost ethereal guitar groove provided by guitar icon Slash, this CD covers the gamut of guitar and recording techniques. Solid tributes, most of which also include the 93-year old Les Paul are turned in by Johnny Rzeznik covering U2's "All I Ever Want Is You", Joan Osborne's smoky rendition of "I Don't Wanna Be With Anybody But You", and even Richie Sambora's spiritual vocal on "Great Hall Of Fame". This CD serves as a tribute, not only to the man, but also to these techniques that Les Paul invented as well as to the Les Paul guitar and the inspiration he provided the many guests that appear on this release. Notably Les Paul himself plays alongside his protégé's on several tracks. Sadly, it was during the post production of this CD that famed barefoot guitarist Hiram Bullock passed away making this his last official recording. Not only is this a tribute to the man, Les Paul; it's also a tribute to his recording techniques and the inspiration he provided the many guests that appear on this release.

Commenting on the making of this disc, featured artist Slash says "This is a record where instead of playing Les Paul's music & trying to imitate his inimitable style, it is a showcase of guitar players doing their own thing, but in tribute to his influence on our musicianship, recording techniques & use of effects. All of which wouldn't be anything like what they are if it weren't for Les Paul's creative & technical pioneering genius. And, at 93 yrs old he is still as obsessed with pioneering as many new gadgets & techniques to make life more interesting, as he always has been." - amazon.com

IKE & TINA TURNER - The Soul Of Ike And Tina & Dynamite (2004)

This CD comprises the Ike and Tina Turner albums "The Soul Of Ike And Tina & Dynamite" on one disc. Highlights include five addditional bonus tracks. This UK twofer combines the rock/soul duo's 1960 & 1962 albums with five bonus tracks, 'Tina's Dilemma', 'Mind In A whirl', 'The Argument', 'Please Don't Hurt Me' & 'Worried & Hurtin' Inside', making their CD debut. This set contains most of the vocal performances recorded by Ike & Tina for the Sue label. When the dust settles, this might end up being duo's most important work.Sure, whatever commercial succes thay had achieved later in career became more known, but these gritty, sweaty and finger-poppin songs were where Ike & Tina came from.It sounds very much like Ray Charles/James Brown rompin' stompin' horn-driven dance material of the late 1950's/early 1960's with irresistible Ikettes harmonizing in the background, their dark voices matching Tina's lusty screams note for note. The most surprising thing about these 1961. and 1962. LPs is how exciting they sound today, basically they are compilations of very strong singles (they were not recorded as albums) with no filler, just great music all the way (think "What'd I say" recorded by woman). R&B hits ("A Fool in love","I idolise you") and bluesy ballads ("Chances are","I had a notion") are mixed with peppy lovey-dovey duets ("You are my baby","Wont you forgive me"),Tina and Ikettes are of course formidable while Ike's guitar/piano and chunky, recognisable sound are pure joy. - amazon.com

TOTO

Toto was an American rock band founded in 1977 by some of the most popular and experienced session musicians of the era. The band enjoyed great commercial success in the 1980s, beginning with the band's self-titled debut, released during 1978. Continuing with 1982's critically acclaimed and commercially successful Toto IV, Toto became one of the best selling music groups of their era. They are known for such hit singles as "Hold the Line", "Rosanna", "Africa", and "Stranger in Town". Although their popularity in the United States diminished in the 1990s and 2000s, they continued to tour and sold out arenas, clubs, and theaters internationally. Toto was known for their technical skill in the studio, as well as a musical style that combines elements of pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock, hard rock, R&B, and jazz. Although they were regularly associated with the soft rock genre, this broad array of musical styles helped them appeal to a variety of musicians and non-musician listeners.

Toto may be past its prime as a multi-platinum recording band, but Live in Amsterdam offers abundant proof that their performances are as electrifying as ever. Recorded in Amsterdam's Heineken Music Hall on February 17, 2003, near the end of Toto's 25th anniversary world tour, this dynamic concert serves as a cheerful reminder that Toto have been alive and well and recording steadily since 1978. The band's 2002 release Through the Looking Glass was an album of covers, two of which are welcomed here: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a prime showcase for guitarist Steve Lukather, and "Bodhisattva" is a tight, meticulous tribute to Toto's original drummer, the late Jeff Porcaro, and his classic sessions with Steely Dan. The mega-hits "Africa," "Rosanna," and "Hold the Line" are perfectly executed, and in a band full of talented singers, lead vocalist Bobby Kimball sounds better than ever. Two impressive medleys show the band in full gear as a comfortable unit of seasoned professionals, highlighted by impeccable work from keyboardist David Paich, bassist Mike Poracaro, and ace drummer Simon Phillips.

KRIS KRISTOFFERSON - The Austin Sessions (1999) thumbup

"The Austin Sessions" is an album by Kris Kristofferson, released on Atlantic Records in 1999. It features stripped-down versions of Kristofferson's most famous material, including "Me and Bobby McGee", "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" and "Help Me Make It Through the Night". Several well-known artists contributed vocals to the album, including Steve Earle, Jackson Browne, Matraca Berg, Vince Gill, Marc Cohn, Alison Krauss, Catie Curtis and Mark Knopfler.

When an artist rerecords the songs that brought him fame, fans have a right to be skeptical. After all, such moves are generally prompted more by a yearning to restore one's financial rather than artistic standing. This project by country maverick Kris Kristofferson, however, has one major factor in its favor: Kristofferson's original early-1970s recordings of the likes of "Me and Bobby McGee," "Help Me Make It Through the Night," and "The Pilgrim: Chapter 33" were significant, but less than definitive. Here he returns to the tunes that helped lay the groundwork for the Outlaw movement of the '70s, but in place of the stolid Nashville arrangements on the originals is more sympathetic accompaniment. While The Austin Sessions is star-studded (guests include Steve Earle, Jackson Browne, Vince Gill, and Alison Krauss), the project really rests on the broad shoulders of Kristofferson, who fares well. Never a threat to George Jones as a vocalist, he nevertheless sounds comfortable in a largely acoustic setting rasping his way through songs he should be prouder than ever for penning. - amazon.com

VINCE GILL - Souvenirs (1995) thumbup

"Souvenirs" is a compilation of songs from albums Vince Gill recorded for MCA between 1989 and 1992. It also features duets that originally appeared on albums by Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton, and a cover of the Eagles' "I Can't Tell You Why," from the Eagles tribute album "Common Thread: The Songs Of The Eagles". All songs written or co-written by Vince Gill except "The Heart Won't Lie" (Kim Carnes/Donna Terry Weiss), "I Can't Tell You Why" (Don Henley/Glenn Frey/Timothy B. Schmit) and "I Will Always Love You" (Dolly Parton). Drawn largely from Vince Gill's first three albums for MCA Records, 1989's When I Call Your Name, 1991's Pocket Full of Gold, and 1992's I Still Believe in You, Souvenirs functions as a greatest-hits collection from what is arguably Gill's finest period as a solo artist. Gill's smooth tenor singing is practically the definition of modern slow-burning country sincerity, all done with a touch of that bluegrass "high lonesome" sound, and his ease with ballads frequently obscures the fact that he is one hell of a guitar player when he decides to be. Highlights on this easy to like set are duets with Reba McEntire ("The Heart Won't Lie") and Dolly Parton ("I Will Always Love You"), an interesting cover of the Eagles' "I Can't Tell You Why," and the infectious and upbeat "Liza Jane," which lets Gill rock things out a little. Souvenirs isn't the last word on Vince Gill, who continues to record and release quality contemporary country and bluegrass albums, but there isn't a better single-disc introduction to the commercial side of his output than this one. - cduniverse.com

MR. BIG

Mr. Big were one of the few "shredder" pop metal bands (translation: the bandmembers were highly proficient at their instruments) that prized songcraft as highly as virtuosity. The seeds for the group's formation were sown when bass player extraordinaire Billy Sheehan, often called "the Eddie Van Halen of bass," left David Lee Roth's solo band in 1988. Shortly thereafter, he began piecing together a new outfit comprised of former Racer X guitarist Paul Gilbert, drummer Pat Torpey, and singer Eric Martin, the latter of whom had issued a pair of obscure solo releases in the mid-'80s. By 1989, the newly formed quartet had already inked a recording contract with Atlantic, resulting in the release of a self-titled debut the same year. Despite finding a warm reception among musicians, the album failed to cross over to a mainstream rock audience in America; however, Mr. Big was an immediate success overseas in Japan. The quartet broadened its horizons on its sophomore effort, 1991's Lean into It, which included the melodic psychedelic rocker "Green Tinted Sixties Mind" as well as a pair of ballads that would become sizable singles: the number one smash "To Be with You" and the Top 20 hit "Just Take My Heart."

Despite issuing further releases like 1993's Bump Ahead and 1996's Hey Man, Mr. Big were unable to sustain such commercial success at home, although the group's popularity continued to soar in Japan (resulting in countless sold-out tours and such Japan-only live albums as Raw Like Sushi, Raw Like Sushi 2, Japandemonium, Mr. Big in Japan, etc.).

Gilbert split from the group in the late '90s to pursue a solo career and was replaced by former Poison guitarist Richie Kotzen. The new lineup issued a pair of studio recordings, Get Over It and Actual Size, before launching a "farewell tour" in Japan, which culminated in their amicable breakup in 2002. In early 2009, with the 20th anniversary of Mr. Big's debut on the horizon, the original lineup appeared on Japanese radio to announce that the group would be reuniting. A reunion tour was launched later that year, resulting in the release of 2009's double-disc concert album Back to Budokan, and the band headed home in September 2010 to record a new studio album in Los Angeles. The resulting What If... was released three months later in Japan, followed by an American release in early 2011. - answers.com

B.B. KING - Deuces Wild (1997)

This is B.B.'s celebrity duet album, and a straight-ahead blues album this is not. But longtime fans who are aware of King's genre-stretching capabilities will find much to savor here. Kicking off with B.B. playing some beautiful fills and solo work behind Van Morrison on "If You Love Me," the superstars start lining up to jam with the King, with Tracy Chapman ("The Thrill Is Gone"), Eric Clapton (a funkified "Rock Me Baby"), the Rolling Stones ("Paying the Cost to Be the Boss," with a fine harp solo from Mick Jagger), Willie Nelson (his "Nightlife," long a standard in B.B.'s set list), Bonnie Raitt ("Baby I Love You"), and Marty Stuart ("Confessin' the Blues") all turning in fine efforts. The only clinker aboard here is an ill-advised attempt to make a rap record with Heavy D, the execrable "Keep It Coming." [The import edition adds four bonus tracks: "Let the Good Times Roll," "Bring It Home to Me," "Hummingbird," and "Pauly's Birthday Boogie."] - allmusic.com

THE DEL-LORDS

The Del-Lords are an American rock'n'roll band that formed in New York City in 1982, founded by The Dictators' guitarist Scott Kempner. The band combined elements of '60s garage rock with country, blues, and folk influences to become one of the initial progenitors of urban-roots-rock. Band members were: Scott Kempner, Manny Caiati, Eric Ambel, Frank Funaro. Though praised by critics as one of the best rock bands of the 1980s, the group was derailed by label mismanagement and a Catch-22 situation at radio. Modeled on British bands of the ‘60s that used several singers – Kinks, Beatles, the Who - Kempner’s vision was to create an act featuring four singers, that some said was like an "East Coast Beach Boys". The band took its name from Del Lord, director of many early Three Stooges shorts.

Kempner recruited former Joan Jett guitarist Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, bassist Manny Caiati, and drummer Frank Funaro, and the Del Lords released their first disc, Frontier Days, on Enigma/EMI in 1984. The album was noted for its guts, street smarts, and twangy guitars, a balanced blend of Springsteen meets Johnny Thunders. Their follow-up Enigma/EMI release, Johnny Comes Marching Home, found Pat Benatar producer Neil Geraldo at the helm.

TESLA - Twisted Wires & The Acoustic Sessions (2011)

The self produced album of 12 songs features two new unreleased songs called 2nd Street , and Better Off Without You , as well as the final recordings of the original lineup with former guitarist Tommy Skeoch from 2005. The aptly titled album is not only called TWISTED WIRES & the acoustic sessions... for the way Tesla has always seemed to seamlessly blend acoustic and electric guitar sounds in their music, but is also descriptive of the bands continuous and tumultuous ride over the past 25 years, overcoming the ups and downs of rock and roll. From the band that sparked the unpled craze of the 90s with 5 Man Acoustic Jam , and the radical electric guitar riffs of Modern Day Cowboy featured on the latest Guitar Hero game, now comes TWISTED WIRES & the acoustic sessions... a creative mix of past and present, as well as a classic rendition of Climax Blues Bands I Love You which so happens to be the first song TESLA recorded together after reuniting from a painful 5 year break up. Take a spin of the new disc by TESLA and enjoy the celebration of 25 years with America s gritty blue collar band of survivors who still rock today, and will for another 25 years! - amazon.com

INDIA.ARIE - Testimony: Vol.01 & 2

India.Arie is a Grammy Award-winning American soul, R&B, and neo soul musician, songwriter, and producer. She has sold over 3.3 million records on U.S. and 10 million worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and received 18 nominations, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist. India.Arie hails from Atlanta, Georgia, but her smooth neo-soul owes more to the traditions of Philly Soul and Detroit's Motown of yore than the Dirty South rap that dominated her native city in the 2000s. Still, the remarkable thing about Arie is how she deftly marries old school R&B to an urban contemporary sound.

2006 - "Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship" - "Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship", the singer-songwriter's third album, continues to perfect Arie's unique blend of styles. Smooth and accessible, yet marked by supremely well-crafted songs, Testimony shifts gears effortlessly, moving from breezy tropical tunes ("Good Mourning") to Lauren Hill-styled hip-hop ("I Am Not My Hair"), hitting all points in between. With just the right balance of old school and new, acoustic and electric, and consciousness themes with party jams, Testimony is an important notch in the rising career of this talented entertainer. - cduniverse.com
TRACKS:
01. (Intro) Loving 02. These Eyes 03. The Heart Of The Matter 04. Good Mourning 05. Private Party 06. There's Hope 07. (Interlude) Living 08. India'Song 09. Wings Of Forgiveness 10. Summer 11. I Am Not My Hair 12. Great Grandmother 13. Better People 14. (Outro) Learning 15. I Choose 16. This Too Shall Pass

2009 - "Testimony: Vol.02, Love & Politics" - Love & Politics bears close resemblance, both stylistically and thematically, to its illustrious predecessor. Like Testimony Vol. 1, Love & Politics impresses with the professionalism of its production, with meticulously interwoven layers of backing vocals that recall the most sumptuous soul productions of the mid `70s. The productions of Stevie Wonder and Gamble & Huff are obvious touchstones for the tasteful strings and subdued Fender Rhodes work of lead single "Chocolate High," which features vocal contributions from Musiq Soulchild. Though Love & Politics doesn't represent a significant departure from the thoughtful, easygoing soul with which Arie has made her name, it includes a few nods to trends in contemporary R&B, most notably the sprightly "Therapy," which splices Arie's breezy vocals and gentle fingerpicking on to a propulsive, club-ready beat. - cduniverse.com
TRACKS:
01. Intro, Grains 02. Therapy (Feat. Gramps Morgan) 03. Ghetto 04. Chocolate High (Feat. Musiq Soulchild) 05. He Heals Me 06. Interlude, Grains 07. Pearls (Feat. Dobet Gnahore) 08. River Rise 09. Yellow (Feat. Terrell Carter) 10. Better Way 11. Interlude, Grains 12. Long Goodbye 13. Psalms 23 (Feat. MC Lyte) 14. The Cure (Feat. Sezen Aksu) 15. Outro, Grains 16. A Beautiful Day (Bonus Track)

LIZ PHAIR - Liz Phair (2003)

Elizabeth Clark "Liz" Phair is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. Phair began her career in the early 1990s by self-releasing audio cassettes under the moniker Girly Sound, before signing with the independent record label Matador Records. Her 1993 debut studio album Exile in Guyville was released to acclaim: by the turn of the 21st century, it had been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Ten years after the release of her debut, Phair's fourth album, Liz Phair, was released on Capitol Records and her music began to move in a more pop rock-oriented approach. Phair has sold nearly three million records worldwide. Her latest album, Funstyle, was released on July 3, 2010.

"Liz Phair" is the eponymous fourth album by American singer-songwriter Liz Phair, released June 24, 2003. "Why Can't I?" and "Extraordinary" were released as singles. Phair began production on the album with Michael Penn, but some of his work was scrapped for that of songwriting hitmakers The Matrix, who contributed four tracks.

YES - Fly From Here (2011)

Fly from Here is the twenty-first studio album from the English progressive rock band Yes. Their first studio album since Magnification (2001), it is also the first to feature Canadian singer Benoît David, who replaced long-time vocalist Jon Anderson in 2008 due to health reasons. David had been a member of Close to the Edge, a Yes tribute band, for over ten years prior to joining the group. The current line-up is formed of David, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White and keyboardist Geoff Downes. Fly From Here is the first Yes album to be produced by Horn since 1987's Big Generator. The album takes its name from its main track, "Fly from Here", a 25-minute song split up into six parts. The basis of the song was a demo originally recorded by Downes and Trevor Horn of The Bles prior to joining Yes in 1980. After Yes disbanded in 1981, Horn and Downes recorded a second demo, and both recordings became the foundation of the tracks "We Can Fly" and "Sad Night at the Airfield". - wikipedia

MELISSA ETHERIDGE - Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled [Deluxe Edition] (2005)

Talk about the human condition. When Melissa Etheridge released Lucky in early 2004, it was in celebration of a new romance and her status as a veteran singer/songwriter. Sadly, just a few months later, she announced she had breast cancer. But then, almost exactly a year after Lucky's release, Etheridge was on-stage at the Grammys singing a powerful version of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart." Her bold, and bald, performance proved that cancer wasn't Melissa Etheridge's goodbye. But it also gave hope to anyone experiencing the same ordeal. Etheridge celebrates her career again with 2005's Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled, which joins highlights and singles from her albums to unreleased material and a rousing studio version of "Piece of My Heart." The cover shot's great, an update of 1992's Never Enough depicting a short-haired Etheridge and her trusty Ovation, and so is her cover of the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers classic "Refugee," which builds from a raw acoustic track to a full-blown rock band/backup singer belter. From there the set continues chronologically. The breathy keyboards of "Similar Features" date it to 1988, but "Like the Way I Do" and "Bring Me Some Water," its fellow singles from Etheridge's self-titled debut, are shots of bluesy, brassy rock & roll that renew amazement in Etheridge's unchecked passion as a vocalist. (Actually, this collection could consist of "Bring Me Some Water" 17 times in a row and still be awesome.) Brave and Crazy's gently evocative "You Can Sleep While I Drive" plays out like a little movie, while the 1993 hit Yes I Am is represented by three slicker yet still strong tracks. Later albums like Breakdown and Your Little Secret get one song each. While she's always been brave, it's clear as Road Less Traveled plays out that Etheridge became less crazy as the 1990s unfolded. She adjusted the swagger of her earlier records with turns toward conventional album-oriented rock and lighter, more tasteful singles ("Come to My Window," for example). But her songwriting always endured, as the previously unreleased "This Is Not Goodbye" and "I Run for Life" show. Both inspired by her cancer, the former is an elegiac meditation on mortality while the latter celebrates recovery, endurance, and belief. Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled is a comprehensive, entertaining, and ultimately redemptive collection from a woman who truly deserves it. - answers.com

THE KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD BAND - How I Go [Special Edition] (2011) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Kenny Wayne Shepherd's How I Go not only serves as a strong reminder of the chops that caused Guitar World to place him right behind B.B. King and Eric Clapton on their list of blues guitarists, but it's the strongest indication yet of his gifted songwriting talent. The album pairs Kenny's deeply soulful and impassioned takes on classic material like Bessie Smith's "Blackwater Blues," Albert King's "Oh, Pretty Woman" and The Beatles "Yer Blues" alongside the strongest writing and co-writing of his career thus far. The hard-rocking, blues-based, guitar-driven album sounds young, it sounds fresh. Yet it has that distinctive energy and vibe drawn from the deep heritage of the genre. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is growing as a songwriter, musician and producer. Which isn't to say he's not proud of his past. "I don't have any regrets, other than maybe a couple of outfits that I wore on stage," he laughs. Last year's Live in Chicago! captured epic performances from Kenny and an assemblage of living legends in the blues world. Kenny's incredible presence and perpetually giving performances, designed to get every person in the room on their feet and to leave them smiling, are all of the evidence one needs to determine that he'll continue to do this for decades to come - just like his heroes.

DEEP PURPLE - Phoenix Rising (2011) [Only CD]

After Ian Gillan and Roger Glover left after the release of Who Do We Think We Are, Deep Purple decided to continue and entered one of the most controversial, exciting and extreme phases of their career. Back then unknown vocalist David Coverdale and bass player Glenn Hughes joined the band. The following albums Burn and Stormbringer showed they could maintain the same levels of the previous incarnation of the band while maintaining 'classic album status.' When Ritchie Blackmore decided to leave the band, they surprisingly decided to continue, recruiting guitarist Tommy Bolin. The Mk IV lineup released the great album Come Taste The Band, and played in front of immensely large audiences at the peak of their glamorous lives, until excesses affected the band and Bolin tragically died of a heroin overdose. Deep Purple were then officially split up. This package features: Rises Over Japan: 30 minute-long live footage filmed in 16mm in Japan, restored in HD. Never before released, not even on bootlegs. Originally planned to be included in a Deep Purple film, the short movie was never released after Tommy Bolin's death. Getting Tighter: The full length 90-minute documentary of the story behind Deep Purple after Ian Gillan and Roger Glover's departures. Jon Lord and Glenn Hughes tell the story of the 'post Gillan' years, through never before seen live images, backstage footage, never before told stories and original video material collected through years of hard work.. New inside stories and the truths about the dark sides of Deep Purple with the rise and fall of their seventies years will really grab fans. Available on Blu-Ray, DVD and special collectors DVD + CD.

The CD contains rare live tracks from MK IV history that were digitally remastered in 2011.

TRACKS:
01. Burn (Long Beach) 02. Gettin' Tighter (Japan) 03. Love Child (Japan) 04. Smoke On The Water / Georgia On My Mind (Japan) 05. Lazy (Long Beach) 06. Homeward Strut (Long Beach) 07. You Keep On Moving (Japan) 08. Stormbringer (Long Beach

LINDISFARNE - Charisma Years 1970-1973: Their First Five Albums (2011)

Lindisfarne were a British folk/rock group from Newcastle upon Tyne established in 1970 (originally called Brethren) and fronted by singer/songwriter Alan Hull. Their music combined a strong sense of yearning with an even stronger sense of fun. The original line-up comprised Alan Hull (vocals, guitar, piano), Ray Jackson (vocals, mandolin, harmonica), Simon Cowe (guitar, mandolin, banjo), Rod Clements (bass guitar, violin) and Ray Laidlaw (drums). Lindisfarne barely command more than a footnote in most rock reference books. During the early '70s, however, Lindisfarne were one of the hottest folk-based rock bands in England, with chart placements on two of their albums that rivaled Jethro Tull, and had them proclaimed one of the most important groups of the decade. With a sound that mixed plaintive folk-like melodies, earthy but well-sung harmonies, and acoustic and electric textures, the group seemed poised for international success, when a series of unfortunate artistic decisions, followed by a split in their lineup, left them bereft of audience and success. - answers.com

DISC 1 - "Nicely Out Of Tune"
"Nicely Out of Tune" is the debut album by Lindisfarne, released in late 1970. It was thus titled as the group considered themselves 'nicely out of tune' with other prevailing musical trends at the time.
TRACKS:
01. Lady Eleanor 02. Road To Kingdom Come 03. Winter Song 04. Turn A Deaf Ear 05. Clear White Light [Part 2] 06. We Can Swing Together 07. Alan In The River With Flowers 08. Down 09. The Things I Should Have Said 10. Jackhammer Blues 11. Scarecrow Song - Bonus Recordings: 12. Knackers Yard Blues - Single B-Side 13. Nothing But The Marvellous Is Beautiful - Single B-Side 14. From My Window - Out Take 15. On My Own I Built A Bridge - Out Take 16. Lady Eleanor - US Mix [Previously Unavailable on CD] 17. We Can Swing Together - US Mix [Previously Unavailable on CD] 18. Scarecrow Song - US Mix [Previously Unavailable on CD] 19. Meet Me On The Corner - Demo Version

DISC 2 - "Fogg On The Tyne" & "Dingly Dell"
"Fog on the Tyne", the album that made it up to Number 1 in Great Britain in November 1971. It also contains the two songs which the band is immediately associated with: Meet me on the corner and Fog on the Tyne. A lot of music magazines declared Lindisfarne the most promising newcomer band of 1972 and chose Lady Eleanor as the single of the year. In March 1972 Meet me on the corner made it up to number 5 in the British charts.
TRACKS:
01. Meet Me On The Corner 02. Alright On The Night 03. Uncle Sam 04. Together Forever 05. January Song 06. Peter Brophy Don't Care 07. City Song 08. Passing Ghosts 09. Train In G Major 10. Fog On The Tyne - Bonus Recordings: 11. Scotch Mist 12. No Time To Lose 13. January Song - Extended Version
"Dingly Dell" - The band were not satisfied with the mix by producer Bob Johnston, who had previously worked with Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. Shortly before the final release they re-mixed it on their own. All Fall Down has become something of a classic. Made #6 in the UK chart.
TRACKS:
14. All Fall Down 15. Plankton's Lament 16. Bring Down The Government 17. Poor Old Ireland 18. Don't Ask Me 19. O No Not Again 20. Dingle Regatta 21. Wake Up Little Sister 22. Go Back 23. Court In The Act 24. Mandolin King 25. Dingly Dell

DISC 3 - "Live"
Originally released in 1973. The discovery of the original multitrack recordings of the concert and the longer playing time of CD’s means that the whole of Lindisfarne’s historic December 1971 Newcastle City Hall concert was remastered in 2005 and can be heard just as it happened. New sleevenotes are written by drummer Ray Laidlaw. Includes 6 tracks not previously available. The complete gig.
TRACKS:
01. Intro 02. Together Forever 03. No Time To Lose 04. January Song 05. Meet Me On The Corner 06. Alright On The Night 07. Train In G Major 08. Scotch Mist 09. Lady Eleanor 10. Knacker's Yard Blues 11. Fog On The Tyne 12. We Can Swing Together 13. Jackhammer Blues 14. Clear White Light

DISC 4 - "Roll On, Ruby"
Released in 2005 for the first time on CD. The 4 bonus tracks were recorded live at the Bob Harris show on 05.08.74 and had previously been released on the 1998 'Dealers Choice' compilation. Instead of these it would have been much better to add alternate versions from the U.S. 'Roll On, Ruby' album.
TRACKS:
01. Taking Care Of Business 02. North Country Boy 03. Steppenwolf 04. Nobody Loves You Anymore 05. When The War Is Over 06. Moonshine 07. Lazy 08. Roll On River 09. Tow The Line 10.
