BLACK STONE CHERRY - Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea [Special Edition, 2011]
BLACK STONE CHERRY was formed in early 2000’s in Kentucky. They’ve previously released two albums; after the self-titled debut studio album (2006) came out they gave their fans ‘Folklore And Superstition’ in 2008 (there were also some singles and a live album). Now they’ve brought out their third one ‘Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea’. Their dilemma seems to have been how to get away from balancing the styles they delve into; the scale has decisively turned into more of the Southern Rock territory. At times they remind me of PEARL JAM (mainly when it comes to vocal), and a country cousin of ALTER BRIDGE. The album is supposed to sum up their experiences gained between their youth lived in Kentucky and their embarking on travelling the world, being enabled to do so thanks to their music.

TRAFFIC - John Barleycorn Must Die (1970) [Deluxe Edition 2011]
Although JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE was originally intended as Steve Winwood's post-Blind Faith solo debut, Winwood and producer/label head Chris Blackwell first drafted Jim Capaldi to provide lyrics, and then Chris Wood dropped by to add his familiar reeds, and almost by accident, Traffic was reborn. This was a different, and better, Traffic than the ill-fated quartet lineup with Dave Mason, which never entirely settled on an artistic direction. The sound of JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE, on the other hand, remained the template for the rest of the reunited band's career--long, organically developed songs with a subtle jazz-rock feel, powered by Capaldi's percussion and Winwood's organ. "John Barleycorn," a traditional English folk song about the process of brewing ale (not, as the liner notes mistakenly claim, a call for temperance), here becomes a pastoral reverie carried along by flute and acoustic guitar, and proves to be the record's highlight. However, the quality of the other songs, particularly the instrumental opener, "Glad," and the outstanding ballad "Empty Pages," is nearly as high. 2011 deluxe edition of their seminal 1970 fourth album remastered and expanded to 2CD’s. CD1 has been restored to it's original 1970, 6-track, running order while CD2 which was compiled by Steve Winwood contains rare alternate mixes of ‘Stranger To Himself’ & ‘Every Mother's Son’ and the first version of ‘John Barleycorn Must Die’ plus seven songs recorded live in 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York - available officially for the very first time. - cduniverse.com

ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra)
Animal Liberation Orchestra (also known by the initialism ALO) is a musical group, currently signed on Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records label. They have released three full length albums. A band with improvisational tendencies and a laid-back California vibe, ALO became a hit on the jam band circuit while enjoying a close assocation with superstar Jack Johnson. Members Zach Gill (keyboards/vocals), Steve Adams (bass/vocals), and Dan Lebowitz (guitars/vocals) had all known one another since their days at Saratoga High School, but it wasn't until their relocation to Santa Barbara that they decided to form a band. While studying at the University of California, the musicians were introduced to Jack Johnson and drummer David Brogan, the latter of whom joined ALO while they were using the name Django. Numerous name changes, the addition (and subtraction) of a horn section, a number of lineup changes following Brogan's brief departure, and other problems plagued the band during its early years. Even though they were earning a loyal following around Santa Barbara, the band's instability convinced them to move back to their hometown of Saratoga. A couple more drummers came through the ranks before Brogan returned in 2002, and ALO's fortunes improved as the band began releasing material.

ALO - Fly Between Falls (2006)
"Fly Between Falls" was the first album by Animal Liberation Orchestra to be released on Brushfire Records, although it was not their first record. It was originally released on Lagmusic Records in 2005 but was re-released on Brushfire in 2006. It features Brushfire artist Jack Johnson on the track "Girl I Wanna Lay You Down."
TRACKS: 01. Spectrum 02. Wasting Time (Isla Vista Song) 03. Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down 04. Barbeque 05. Walls of Jericho 06. Pobrecito 07. Shapeshifter 08. The Gardender 09. Wating for Jaden 10. Fly
ALO - Roses & Clover (2007)
ALO may be describing the inspiration for their release Roses & Clover however, it best summarizes the band's newfound approach to their music. For a band accustomed to performing songs live for years, crafting and shaping hundreds of times over before entering the studio, the age-old process of recording an album first was, well... liberating. On Roses & Clover, ALO explored new methods of collaborating, finding a richer, more mature sound built on their individual songwriting strengths. Recorded in a turn-of-the-century barn in the hills overlooking colonial Santa Barbara, the four musicians holed themselves up for two weeks with little more than their favorite instruments and 40 songs in various stages - 80% of which had never been performed on stage. - amazon.com

ALO - Man Of The World (2010)
Their latest adventure, Man of the World finds the Cali collective flexing their considerable creative powers to craft their finest album yet. Recorded almost entirely live, the 11-song collection is the sound of four players who have truly found their groove together. This is ALO at their most natural, their most organic and their most pure.

FIONA BOYES, MOOKIE BRILL, RICH DelGROSSO - Live From Bluesville (2008)
In blues & roots music there is a tantalizing tension between traditional structures and the continual reinvention that comes with each new generation of players. There are so many styles and histories from which to draw - and each player brings their own particular influences and sensibilities to their performance. In that spirit, 'Live from Bluesville' offers the listener an experience of respect for tradition and daring originality. Seasoned players and multi-award winning artists in their own right, Fiona Boyes, Tom 'Mookie' Brill, and Rich DelGrosso, following a session on beale st. Memphis, during the 2007 blues music awards, decided to further explore the spaces where their respective musical influences and passions meet, and this album is the result. - amazon.com

THE KELLY RICHEY BAND - Live (1998)
Kelly Richey s an American blues rock guitarist, singer and composer based out of Cincinnati, Ohio. Kelly Richey's first instrument was the piano. Her second instrument was a drum kit that her neighbor let her take home. After a couple of months of playing drums in her bedroom, her father offered to buy her anything she wanted. In place of the drums she was introduced to the guitar as a teenager and instantly fell in love with the instrument. With the guitar strapped around her body, Kelly practiced everywhere she went- church, school, and the kitchen table. Kelly Richey joined the Arista Records group, Stealin' Horses in 1986. Through playing various styles of music and getting in touch with her gospel roots, Kelly realized that her true passion was the blues. In 1990, she formed The Kelly Richey Band (KRB), featuring Kelly as a lead blues rock guitarist and vocalist. KRB has become both a national and international touring band and is backed by Shane Frye on drums and Jimmy Valdez on bass. She is now a blues history teacher. - wikipedia

That song subsequently has been covered by several other artists, including Billy Bragg, Katie Moore, The Corrs, and June Tabor. PINK FLOYD - Zabriskie Point (1970)
Zabriskie Point is a 1970 film by Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, widely noted at the time for its setting in the late 1960s counterculture of the United States. Some of the film's scenes were shot on location at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley. The soundtrack to Zabriskie Point included music from Pink Floyd, The Youngbloods, The Kaleidoscope, Jerry Garcia, Patti Page, the Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones and John Fahey.

370 Roman Yards - The Lost Album [The Zabtiskie Point Soundtrack]
This is the soundtrack album for Zabriskie Point that never was, one performed entirely by Pink Floyd, now released by MQR. This album is the natural product of years and years of passionate research applied to the Zabriskie Point topic by WRomanus. Over the years many theories have been presented, and we all know a good researcher has to prove his theories whenever possible. In recent years his dedication has yielded the deserved prizes. "I had the luck to get from Glenn Povey what I call simply The Document, part of the ZP recording sheets of EMI studios. I was also able to make contact with Don Hall, the Music Adviser of the movie. I'm honoured to say that this contact became a real friendship. With my great satisfaction almost all my theories, even the most incredible, were confirmed." This Album is part of the Complete Zabriskie Point Collection and The Box called A Total Zabriskie Point of View. We share it in advance to highlight this very important find of Pink Floyd's career.

The Complete Zabriskie Point Sessions
This is an amazing album containing 15 outtakes from the famous sessions for the Antonioni cult classic. After recording for several days, only three songs ended up on the official soundtrack. Over the years several outtakes appeared on dubious and soundwise poor bootlegs. In 1997 a revised edition of Zabriskie Point was released, including four previously unreleased Floyd takes. But there was more, much more as this release proves.

V.A. - Hard-Headed Woman: A Celebration Of Wanda Jackson (2004)
Known to many as the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson is a maverick performer and one of rock 'n' roll's original bad asses who helped stake out a direct route from the feral origins of rock to the punks, riot grrrls, and psychobilly boundary-busters 50 years later. Kelly Hogan, Neko Case, Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter, Robbie Fulks, Wayne "The Train" Hancock, Bottle Rockets, Laura Cantrell, Candye Kane, Nora O'Connor, and Rosie Flores pay tribute to this renegade in their own styles of country, blues, rock, rockabilly, gospel, honky tonk, and swing. From outright barn-burners and rave-ups to songs of heartbreak and tangible pathos, the spirit of Jackson is given new life in the voices and attitudes of these descendants of the Hard-Headed Woman. - amazon.com

WANDA JACKSON - The Very Best Of The Country Years (2006)
Some know the legendary Wanda Jackson only as either a wild rockabilly banshee or a gospel singer. Jackson was also a solid, original country singer and this collection by Ace, one of the very best assembled onto a single disc, proves the point in spades. When Jackson emerged form the rockabilly years, her country records contained more than a little of that untamable spirit that made her hits of the 1950s so essential. The recordings in this set cover the years 1958 to 1972. They say as much about Nashville as they do Jackson -- check out the prototype-psychedelic guitar solo in "Right or Wrong" from 1961. There's a ton of fuzz in the riff, and the solo itself is the progenitor of Davie Allan & the Arrows' sound. Jackson walked the line between the sophisticated phrasing of Patsy Cline (check "Slippin'") and the throaty, wilder, rawer, Rose Maddox country boogie and hillbilly sounds ("You Bug Me Bad"). There are 30 selections on this platter that run the gamut between the two poles. The bluesy hard edge in the grain of Jackson's voice would never allow her to become so mainstream as to be a national icon, and her competition was stiff: Tammy Wynette, Connie Smith, Lynn Anderson, and Loretta Lynn were just a few of country's biggest stars at the time. Jackson also never let the rock & roll completely go out of her way of singing a song, even in the real weepers like the pedal steel drenched "You'll Always Have My Love," and the string-soaked "I Cried Every Time You Hurt Me." The tunes from the later '60s with horns (akin to the Tijuana Brass) as heard in 1968's "My Baby Walked Right out on Me," gave Jackson a wider platform to let her considerable voice rip. Of course, "Fancy Satin Pillows" and "A Woman Lives for Love" are both here as well, representing Jackson's last hits for Capitol. The set ends with "Tennessee Women's Prison," a honky tonk song recorded as her last single for Capitol in 1972, and the a burning rendition of "Let's Have a Party," from a 1969 live album produced by Ken Nelson. For those who snagged the Bear Family single disc of Jackson's rockabilly material, this one from Ace is the next essential chapter in the story. - allmusic.com

LAURA CANTRELL - Kitty Wells Dresses: Songs of the Queen of Country Music (2011)
Laura Cantrell's fourth full-length, Kitty Wells Dresses: Songs of the Queen of Country Music, reflects exactly what it is, a collection of covers associated with Wells. It may seem unusual that, given the six years that have lapsed between brilliant Humming by the Flowered Vine, that a canny songwriter like Cantrell would issue an album (almost) exclusively of covers, until you hear it. Produced by Mark Nevers, Cantrell's top-flight cast of players includes Chris Scr (BR5-49, M. Ward), multi-instrumentalist Fats Kaplin (Tom Russell, Andrew Hardin, Kane Welch Kaplin, Paul Burch), Paul Niehaus (Calexico), and BR5-49 frontman Chuck Mead. Cantrell wrote the title track, a beautiful, lilting, midtempo country song driven by acoustic guitar, bass, and fiddle; the protagonist is looking back on her youth after seeing a photograph of Wells in a magazine in a black gabardine dress (which went against the dress code for female country performer sin the early '50s). She explains with requisite poetry and sparse elegance exactly why Wells is such a sacred figure in the history of country. Wells scored with "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" in 1951, paving the way for Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, and virtually every female artist who followed. Cantrell follows this lovely song with nine covers of songs associated with Wells, with a simple presentation that manages to convey Wells' own plain-sung but emotionally smoldering delivery on topics that depicted love, sex, and heartbreak in a shockingly frank manner for the era. These include the better-known material like "....Honky Tonk Angels," readings of Jimmy Work's "Making Believe," Zeke Clements' "Poison in Your Heart," Fred Rose's and Hy Heath's "I Gave My Wedding Dress Away," Wells' and J.D. Loudermilk's "Amigo's Guitar," the Anglin Brothers' and Johnny Wright's "One by One" (sung as a fine duet with Mead), and the wrenching closer, "Searching for a Soldier's Grave," written by Roy Acuff. A hit in 1956 for Wells, it addressed the loss of American soldiers in WWII, but resonates in this version as a poignant reminder of the cost of war. Cantrell's all-too-brief Kitty Wells Dresses contains its object's sense of sophisticated vocal economy that still conveys the power of truth in the human heart with elegance and grace, making it a fitting tribute for all the right reasons. - allmusic.com

THE ANIMALS - A's, B's & EP's (2003)
The Animals' output on EMI has been so heavily reissued and recompiled so many times that none of it is especially rare, or notable for that reason - it just stands up as music, especially the singles, which are what we have represented here. The compilation CD A's B's & EP's is a handy way of taking a tour of the group's early sound, up through the middle of 1965, boiling down their singles, B-sides, and EP's in excellent sound. It took the group a few tries to really master the art of making a strong album from start to finish, but - as we're reminded here - their 45s were beyond reproach, exciting, bold, and daring, and all memorable. Hearing Hilton Valentine's guitar crunching and chiming away on "I'm Crying," or John Steel's drums up close and personal on "Boom Boom," supporting Eric Burdon's voice and juxtaposed with Alan Price's organ, is still a bracing experience 40 years later - and on this master, Valentine's trip down the fret board and Price's keyboard flourishes exude rippling energy and a bracing presence - even on cheap speakers, Steel's snare is distinguishable from the rest of the rhythm section; and on "It's My Life" you can practically hear the action on his kit. And this disc is also a good opportunity for low-level fans to discover obscurities such "I'm Gonna Change the World" which, with its ambitious lyric and form, sort of anticipates the later compositions that Burdon would cut, on his own and away from virtually all help. The annotation is nothing special, the packaging has its weaknesses (in terms of the original releases of the songs), and EMI's Complete Animals still runs circles around this CD, but it's an okay piece to have and easier to find than that double-disc set, as of 2004. - allmusic.com

ILSE DeLANGE - Best Of & Live ...
Country-pop singer Ilse DeLange emerged as one of the most successful Dutch artists of her generation with her chart-topping 1998 debut, World of Hurt. Born May 13, 1977, in Almelo, Holland, DeLange spent much of her childhood competing in local talent contests, eventually forming a country-inspired duo with guitarist Joop Liefland -- in 1994 they performed at the Dutch Country Music Awards, but their momentum soon stalled and a year later the partnership dissolved. DeLange next surfaced in the short-lived pop group Wij, issuing the 1996 single "De Oorlog Meegemaakt." Two years later, she joined the country band Cash on Delivery, and with them traveled to Nashville to record an LP with producer Barry Beckett. The completed album, titled World of Hurt, was issued in the Netherlands as a DeLange solo effort, going on to sell close to 500,000 copies and topping the Dutch charts -- the single "I'm Not So Tough" also cracked the Top 40, and she claimed Best Female Singer honors at the annual Edison Awards as well as the TMF Award for Best New Artist. The stopgap live release Dear John followed in 1999, and a year later DeLange issued her second studio album, Livin' on Love. More rock-oriented than its predecessor, the LP peaked at number five, notching a Top 40 hit via the title cut. DeLange returned to the U.S. to record 2003's Clean Up, which returned the singer to the top of the Dutch charts and yielded her highest-charting single to date with "Before You Let Me Go," a collaboration with the pop band Kane -- she also won her second Edison Award as Best Female Singer. After teaming with Italian singer Zucchero for the hit duet "Blue," DeLange began work with American pop producer Patrick Leonard on 2006's chart-topping The Great Escape, which generated the hits "The Lonely One" and "I Love You." ~ All Music Guide

STEVE GAINES - One In The Sun (1988)
Steven Gaines (1949 – 1977) was an American musician. He is most well-known as a guitarist and songwriter for southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, and is the younger brother of Cassie Gaines, who was also a member of the band. He was born on the same day as Ed King, whom he would replace as a guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1976.
The material on "One in the Sun" was not released until 14 years after it was recorded, and about a decade after Steve Gaines had died along with other members of Lynyrd Skynyrd in a plane crash. It's a competent set of R&B-flavored laid-back rock, sometimes with a bit of a funkified reggae feel. Gaines wrote most of the songs, singing lead on all tracks but one, also covering the Impressions' "It's Alright" and Taj Mahal's arrangement of "Black Jack Davey." Nothing's too flashy or striking in either the instrumental or vocal department. It leaves the impression of a solid musician much more suited to playing a support role within a band than being a featured soloist - which is, of course, what happened, though Gaines had only a brief time to play that role in Lynyrd Skynyrd before his death. - cduniverse.com

STATUS QUO - Quid Pro Quo (2011) ![]()
![]()
![]()
Quid Pro Quo ends the longest wait for a new Status Quo album since the legendary band's first hit in 1969, following on four years after 2007's In Search Of The Fourth Chord. It marks a return to Quo recording duties for frontman, Francis Rossi, after his solo album One Step At A Time. Prior to the album's release, a charity single, In The Army Now 2010, and a free download, "Rock 'n' Roll 'n' You", were released with the latter generating much interest in the Quo community. Over the years since the reformation of the band in 1986 (and quite possibly prior to that) there has been much consternation in the Quo fan community about the quality of the band's output, and various debates have raged regarding the sorts of tracks the band has laid down and whether some members of the band are up to the job. Therefore, watching the debates that raged about whether this album was the long-awaited 'return to form' did not surprise me. The going rumour prior to release was that this would be the most rocking Status Quo album in years. The album, when it arrived, did not disappoint on its promise. There is rock in abundance here! The overall sound is generally what you'd expect from Quo. In comparing it to In Search Of The Fourth Chord I notice that is a little more of an echo soak here but this may just be taking the edge off of the years on vocals. However, as a counter to that, it should be noted that in terms of vocal performance, this album blows its predecessor out of the water. It feels like Rossi and Parfitt had more fun recording this album, and some of Parfitt's vocals in particular are top class.
Limited two CD edition includes bonus 10 track live CD. 2011 album from the veteran British Rock 'n' Rollers, still releasing albums and touring some 40+ years after they released their debut album. Quid Pro Quo contains 14 brand new tracks plus their 2010 pro-armed forces version of "In The Army Now'.

SEASICK STEVE - You Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks (2011)
2011 studio album from Seasick Steve (aka Steven Gene Wold), Oakland born Blues guitarist/singer. You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks, Seasick Steve’s fifth album in seven years, is slightly more varied in approach than the bluesman’s previous output, but there’s nothing here that’s all too different from what’s come before. You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks stays true to its title, not really introducing any new elements to this Seasick Steve’s canon, but perfectly satisfying if you’re coming in not looking for a revelation in his sound. Expect the expected and this album won’t disappoint.
"Thanks for taking time to listen to an old man," Steve croaks on the countrified singalong "Long Long Way" and those who find his hoary ol' bluesman persona hokey may well wince at the self-deprecation. Despite his hints at being nothing but a doggone bygone, this (his fifth studio album) confirms him as being well worth our time. The lyrical wisdom is as homespun and simple as his famous three-string guitar but the musicianship is deft enough to set things smouldering: as the storming title track demonstrates, he remains an old dog in no need of new tricks.

WAR - The Very Best Of War (2003)
Funk band War were formed in 1969 when the disillusioned singer of rock band The Animals, Eric Burdon, met a band called Nightshift in Los Angeles and sested a united project. The debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War" contained "Spill The Wine", an international hit that made their name. But Burdon left the band shortly after second album The Black Man's Burdon (1970), due to exhaustion from touring. The rest of the band carried on without him. A self-titled album didn't succeed, but All Day Music (1971) did - it included two minor hits and sold over a million copies. The World Is A Ghetto (1972) did even better, topping the album chart and selling three million copies. Deliver The World (1973) sold another two million, but wasn't so well received by critics. War got back into the critics' good books with Why Can't We Be Friends? (1975), which included another hit in the title track, and "Low Rider". The group's popularity began to decline afterwards as their output slowed and the disco craze sidelined gritty funk. In the 80s and 90s, hip-hop artists such as Beastie Boys, De La Soul and Gangstarr sampled many of their songs, introducing War to a new generation of fans. A version of War continues to tour today.
34 tracks totaling over 2 1/2 hours of music, includes classics from Eric Burdon & War plus all-time War hits 'Low Rider', 'The Cisco Kid', 'The World Is A Ghetto', 'Summer' and more. Slipcase. Rhino. 2003.

P.P.ARNOLD - The Best Of P.P.Arnold (1999)
P.P.Arnold is an American-born soul singer who enjoyed considerable success in the United Kingdom in the 1960s and beyond. Her first break came when she won an audition to be one of the back-up singers for Ike and Tina Turner in 1966. After Ike & Tina toured with The Rolling Stones in England, Mick Jagger invited Arnold to stay, and later co-produced her first solo record The First Lady of Immediate (1967). It was in England that P.P. would subsequently establish the main center of her popularity. There she worked with The Small Faces, singing on their hit "Tin Soldier" (1966) and accompanying them on their subsequent tour. The Small Faces would later write hits for Arnold and her band The Nice. After the Nice split off on its own, Arnold worked with The Blue Jays and T.N.T., and recorded two singles with Barry Gibb as producer. Although still active as a session singer and as a member of several different bands, the 70s and early 80s saw Arnold working most visibly as an actress - first on stage and later on television. In London she starred in Catch My Soul, one of the first rock musicals. In 1981 she moved back to Los Angeles and made appearances on everything from Quincy to St. Elsewhere to Knots Landing. Finding the Hollywood scene somewhat less than inspiring, Arnold eventually returned to England and appeared in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Starlight Express - as well as getting her music career started again with more session work and another solo release. Throughout the 90s and 00s, P.P. Arnold maintained a stream of musical activity, working with the London-based band Ocean Colour Scene, touring with her own band, The Band of Angels, and recording and touring with Roger Waters.

V.A. - Where The Action Is! Los Angeles Nets 1965-1968 [4 CD Set!] (2009)
In Los Angeles during the mid-'60s, music was everywhere - from the garages of Orange County, to the dingbat apartments of the San Fernando Valley, to the bungalows of Laurel Canyon. But without a doubt, the epicenter of the music scene was the Sunset Strip, where “freaks” filled the rock clubs lining the famed Hollywood thoroughfare. Rhino continues the storied Nets tradition with a four-disc boxed set that mines the city's rich musical history for unsung gems. Andrew Sandoval, one of the collection's producers, explains the set's concept in its liner notes: “...the Nets series is something of the alternative musical history of the 1960's. Not so much a survey of what happened, but more what could have happened had music charted on merit alone.” WHERE THE ACTION IS! compiles 101 tracks that mix many of the city's brightest stars (The Byrds, Love, The Doors, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, Captain Beefheart, The Mama & The Papas, Lowell George, Iron Butterfly, The Monkees) with talented artists whose stellar songcraft sadly flew under the radar (The Seeds, Jameson, The Electric Prunes, Modern Folk Quintet, The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Spirit, The Everpresent Fullness, Kaleidoscope, The Standells, The Bobby Fuller Four). WHERE THE ACTION IS! encompasses four discs arranged thematically to cover different aspects of the pop, rock, club and Top 40 sounds of the era. The first covers some of the most notable bands that performed in the clubs of Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Disc two features a sampling of the musicians who began life in South L.A., East L.A. and such far-flung suburbs as Riverside and Bakersfield. The third delves into the artistry of L.A.'s producers, arrangers and Wrecking Crew of studio players. The final disc takes us from the nascent seeds of folk rock to the first blooms of canyon rock, country rock and full-blown psychedelia in the region. It also shows how rock pioneers such as Del Shannon and Rick Nelson took their own stabs at fitting in with “the kids.” Among the many highlights are: an alternate take of The Beach Boys' “Heroes And Villains,” Warren Zevon and producer Bones Howe performing “(You Used To) Ride So High” as The Motorcycle Abeline, “Take A Giant Step” by The Rising Sons, “Acid Head” by The Velvet Illusions,” local scenester Kim Fowley's “Underground Lady,” Jan & Dean's “Fan Tan,” The Monkees' “Daily Nightly,” Jesse Lee Kincaid's “She Sang Hymns Out Of Tune,” “Come To The Sunshine” by Van Dyke Parks, “Sister Marie” by Nilsson and “Hippy Elevator Operator” by The W.C. Fields Memorial Electric String Band. The set also offers a trio of previously unreleased tracks: a recently discovered demo version of “Sit Down I Think I Love You” recorded by Stephen Stills and Richie Furay shortly before they formed Buffalo Springfield; a demo of “Words” by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, one of the West Coast's most successful songwriting teams; and “Once Upon A Time” a collaboration between Tim Buckley and lyricist Larry Beckett. Beautifully packaged in a coffee table book resembling the San Francisco Nets collection from 2006, the set provides a wealth of information about Los Angeles' music scene, including a comprehensive timeline, a listing of the clubs and who performed there, an essay about the L.A. radio stations that defined the era, plus a track-by-track commentary.

ROY BUCHANAN - Live In Japan (1978) ![]()

"Live In Japan" was released by Polydor only in Japan in 1978. Live in Japan (2003) is said to have been Roy Buchanan's favorite of all his platters, and ironically, it was never issued stateside. However, as word spread, the title became an essential addition to his discography. Fact is that it may have never come out at all, had there not been a loophole in Buchanan's contract with former label Polydor, giving them control over his non-North American output. Joining the guitarist for his 1977 tour of Japan are John Harrison (bass), Malcolm Lukens (keyboards), and Byrd Foster (drums/vocals). They are likewise the core contributors to Buchanan's most recent studio effort, A Street Called Straight (1976), though no tracks from the album are represented here. Instead, the set consists of recent collaborations, definitive cover versions, and a few seminal Buchananclassics. The immaculate fidelity immediately separates Live in Japan from most other releases in his canon. The enthusiastic yet typically reserved Japanese audience is first treated to a laid-back and stretched-out reading of Booker T. & the MG's' "Soul Dressing." The backing trio provide a rock-solid bed for Buchanan's sinuous interjections and spacious melody lines. "Sweet Honey Dew" is a perfect vehicle for some incendiary string shredding, although the actual tune is somewhat of a derivation of a standard blues riff. Perhaps more fitting is the rousing rendition of Larry Williams' "Slow Down," uncovering the nimble accuracy accompanying the sonic kick in Buchanan's piercing fret work. Contrasting this is the lengthy jam on "Blues Otani," as the ensemble ably improvise in and around the guitarist. Live in Japan concludes with an intimate and affective "Sweet Dreams," which may well have been the artist's unofficial anthem, as his unique interpretation undoubtedly made it a signature piece. If you own but one concert recording of Buchanan, let it be this one, as you will not be disappointed. - cduniverse.com

BETTYE LaVETTE - Souvenirs (2000)
SOUVENIRS includes a previously unreleased album recorded for Atco Records in 1972. If the Billboard charts were sufficient to tell the complete story of an artist's career, you'd write off Betty Lavette in a heartbeat - after scoring a Top Ten R&B hit with her 1963 Atlantic debut "My Man - He's a Loving Man," Lavette never again returned to the same commercial heights, and the label soon terminated her contract. But she went on to make a series of devastatingly powerful deep soul records for a number of small independent labels, capped off by the 1965 cult classic "Let Me Down Easy," and by 1972 she was back in the Atlantic fold, this time signing to Atco to record a cover of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" followed by an album's worth of material cut at Muscle Shoals with producer Brad Shapiro. But after the first single "Your Turn to Cry" flopped, the planned LP Child of the 70s was shelved, and Lavette was once again dropped. With the release of Souvenirs, the French Art & Soul label has done what Atlantic failed to do even with a mulligan: pay Lavette and her prodigious talent the respect they deserve. Compiling 18 tracks spanning both of her Atlantic tenures, including Child of the 70s in its entirety, Souvenirs proves Lavette once and for all a singer with the gutbucket grit and intensity of prime Aretha and Tina - you can't listen to these songs without wondering what might have been if Atlantic had fully supported her career. - cdunivers.com

THEA GILMORE - John Wesley Harding (2011)
Thea Gilmore has covered Bob Dylan songs in the past and is a huge fan. On 'John Wesley Harding' she has now recorded a version of Dylans very own 'John Wesley Harding' album in her own inimit style. Thea continues her run of outstanding albums with this wonderful release. Her take on "I Dreamed I Saw St Augustine" is already recognised as one of the best Dylan covers ever but the rest of these tracks are just as good if not better! Thea re-invents the album in her own unique style. Her voice is just amazing and the way she gets under the skin of these magical songs is spine tingling. The band behind her pull out all the stops. Drummer Paul Beavis, Robbie McIntosh and Nigel Stonier all deserve acclaim and all play out of their skins. This is a must-buy album by one of the best female singer-songwriters in the business.

THE McCLYMONTS - Wrapped Up Good (2009)
McClymonts have taken the Australian music scene’s collective breath away. Since forming just a few short years ago, and releasing their debut album, Chaos and Bright Lights, they’ve dominated the Country Music Awards of Australia’s Group of the Year category, winning the Golden Guitar three years in a row. Now the McClymonts are set to take another step forward with the release of their brand new album, Wrapped Up Good. Recorded in Nashville, the album has harnessed the talents of Taylor Swift’s producer, Nathan Chapman, and the producer of Chaos and Bright Lights, Adam Anders (Miley Cyrus). The result is a collection of stunning songs, from the exquisite ballad “A Woman is a Flame”, which is the perfect vehicle for Samantha’s pure, true vocals, to the fast and furious “Kick It Up and “I’m Not Done With You”, the gentle “I Could Be a Cowboy” and the quirky and clever “The Boy Who Cried Love”.

PATTY LOVELESS - Mountain Soul 1 & 2
Patty Loveless is an American country music singer. Since her emergence on the country music scene in late 1986 with her first (self-titled) album, Loveless has been one of the most popular female singers of the Neotraditional country movement, although she has also recorded albums in the Country pop and Bluegrass genres. To date, Loveless has charted more than forty singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including five Number Ones. In addition, she has recorded fourteen studio albums (not counting compilations); in the United States, four of these albums have been certified platinum, while two have been certified gold.

2001 - Mountain Soul
Pikeville, Kentucky, native Patty Loveless has occasionally acknowledged her mountain-music roots on her frequently excellent albums of mainstream country. Hear, for instance, the pained, stoic version of Carter Stanley's "I'll Never Grow Tired of You" on Loveless's 1988 breakthrough, Honky Tonk Angel. Like too few of her 21st-century post-hillbilly peers could do, the singer makes Mountain Soul--an all-acoustic sampling of classics and a handful of new songs--far more than a nod to the style. Loveless's clear voice and sensitivity to narrative lyrics have made ballads her most fertile ground, and here she turns in as consistently affecting a disc as she's ever made. Whether offering a remake of Reno & Smiley's "I Know You're Married (But I Love You Still)," hard-country-influenced duets with Travis Tritt and Jon Randall ("Out of Control Raging Fire" and "Someone I Used to Know," respectively), or a rewritten "Soul of Constant Sorrow," she channels emotion in a straightforward way that could serve as a master class for many current vocalists. Even while celebrating a sound rooted in another time, though, Loveless takes an artistic chance or two: Darrell Scott's long, downbeat story song "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" isn't the record's best cut, but it's one of its most intriguing. - amazon.com

2009 - Mountain Soul II
Inspired by her critically acclaimed and commercial hit album from 2001, Mountain Soul, comes the long-awaited follow up to one of Patty Loveless's best-loved albums. In Mountain Soul II Patty's Kentucky roots shine through like a breath of fresh air, featuring her crystalline country vocals amid bluegrass-tinged accompaniment. Patty is surrounded by a stellar supporting cast, including country and bluegrass legends Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill, Al Perkins, and Del and Ronnie McCoury, making Mountain Soul II completely authentic and a true listening pleasure. - amazon.com

DEREK & THE DOMINOS - Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs - 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (2011)
In 1970, Eric Clapton was known as ‘God’ for his guitar virtuosity in a succession of groups. One thing for which he was not renowned was songs, either in quantity or quality. The epic, anguished title-track of the debut album of his new band project Derek and the Dominos changed that forever. Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs has already been the subject of Other Assorted Releases in which the briefly-lived Dominos’ legacy has been padded out with remasters, remixes and bonus tracks. This 40th anniversary Super Deluxe Edition features the original double album, the posthumous In Concert album, singles cuts, a TV show appearance, studio outtakes, projected second album tracks, an audio-only Surround Sound DVD and a vinyl LP – and still doesn't manage to round up all the previously released Dominos material. Those who only know the signature song may be surprised by the Layla album, which is largely made up of mid-tempo and sometimes even slightly soporific blues work-outs, albeit adorned by almost impossibly brilliant instrumentation. Highlights are the quietly worshipful I Am Yours, the funky, fast-rapping Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?, an unexpectedly fine version of Jimi Hendrix’s ostensibly unimprovable Little Wing and Thorn Tree in the Garden, even if ending the album with the latter fragile Bobby Whitlock composition is overegging the pudding following the mellow piano outro of the title-track. Despite his importance to the album, guitarist Duane Allman was technically only a guest performer, so his absence from In Concert is at least understandable, whereas Layla’s is unforgivable, especially in light of the idiotic presence of the 18-minute Let It Rain, one of several cuts that vastly outstays its welcome. The miscellany disc is predictably mixed (and indeed sometimes remixed), though the Johnny Cash Show appearances are marked by some zip. Layla stands not just head and shoulders above anything else here but much else in the rock canon, sounding as moving and anguished as a song that’s rooted in the agony of falling in unrequited love with the wife of a best friend should. The flashing dagger of a riff is one of the finest in history and Clapton duels magnificently with both his overdubbed self and Allman before an exhausted piano-based second act. It almost makes us forget that it constitutes a rather narrow foundation stone for an increasingly massive edifice. - amazon.com

SOLOMON BURKE - Live (2010)
Solomon Burke (1940 – 2010) was an American singer-songwriter, entrepreneur, mortician, and an archbishop of the United House of Prayer For All People. Burke was known as "King Solomon", the "King of Rock 'n' Soul", and as the "Bishop of Soul", and described as "the Muhammad Ali of soul", and as "the most unfairly overlooked singer of soul's golden age". Burke was "the founding father of what was defined as soul music in America in the 1960s", and "a major architect of 1960s soul, infusing post-World War II R&B with [his] gospel roots" and "a key transitional figure bridging R&B and soul",

JOAN BAEZ - Live At Newport (1996)
The voice that launched a thousand earnest young fare-thee-well folkies cut her teeth in the first half of the '60s at the Newport Folk Festivals. This 17-song collection allows fans of Baez to sample her star-making 1963, '64, and '65 sets. (She'd first appeared at the event as a teenager in 1959 as the teenage guest of Bob Gibson, though that milestone has apparently been lost to the ages.) Balancing comely traditionals such as "Come All Ye Fair" and "Tender Maidens" with grittier Bob Dylan tunes, Baez demonstrates how she came to define folk music for a generation of female folksingers. Duets with Dylan, Mary Travers, Peter Yarrow, and the Lilly Brothers provide some extra texture to compliment Baez's smooth-as-silk delivery.
Live at Newport is a live album by American singer and musician Joan Baez, released in 1996. It includes performance from 1963, 1964 and 1965 at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. The final two tracks are duets with Bob Dylan.

WISHBONE ASH - Sometime World: An MCA Travelogue (2010)
The first extensive Wishbone Ash compilation since 1993's two-CD set Time Was, the 2010 double-disc collection Sometime World: An MCA Travelogue covers the same territory as its predecessor but in a different fashion. It runs three tracks longer than Time Was' 23 songs but only nine of those cuts are shared, most of those from the band's earliest days where the common classics are generally acknowledged. Sometime World winds up departing from the path during the back half of their catalog, which provides the source for the second disc. The first five albums - 1970's Wishbone Ash through 1973's Live Dates - are compiled on the first disc, leaving the rest - 1974's There's the Rub through 1981's Number the Brave - for the second disc. This selection tips the scales slightly toward Wishbone Ash's heavier jams, with the first portion of the compilation taking its time - "Errors of My Way" nearly clocks in at seven minutes, "Phoenix" runs over ten - with things starting to lighten on the second disc. This sequencing certainly reflects the band's progression but it won't win over many skeptics - from the first track they're pushed right into the deep end - but for those with a sense of what Wishbone Ash was all about, this tells the story of their prime in leisurely, thorough detail. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

WARREN HAYNES & GREGG ALLMAN - Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Acoustic (2006)
Once in a lifetime! Pre-Mule set, those in attendance at Red Rocks tonight were treated to an unbelievable set of acoustic music from Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes. “Rare” does not aptly describe this night, nor does brilliant, moving, soulful; or any other adjective one can conjure. Midnight Rider was the first dish served and was followed by Come & Go Blues. Old Before My Time and Come On In To My Kitchen both raised the hair on the back of my neck as well as many others' too. Beautiful in its simplicity and stirring in its power, this set is truly one of the highlights of both Messrs, Haynes' and Allman's career.

NEIL YOUNG INTERNATIONAL HARVESTERS - A Treasure (2011) ![]()

The 12-track live album, A Treasure includes songs - 5 of which are previously unreleased - recorded during Young's 1984 and 1985 U.S. tours without the support of an album, or Young's then record label due to unique and unusual circumstances. Among those, "Grey Riders" will be the first track serviced to radio. A Treasure features Young's onstage work with some of the greatest artists in the history of Country music, including the late, great Ben Keith on steel and slide guitar and Rufus Thibodeaux on fiddle, along with living legends Spooner Oldham and Hargus "Pig" Robbins on piano, Tim Drummond and Joe Allen on bass, Anthony Crawford on mandolin & guitars and Karl Himmel on drums, among many others. A Treasure is Young's first release since last year's Grammy and Juno Award-winning album, Le Noise. The live album captures this iconic artist during a fascinating time in his career, when he was facing criticism and lawsuits from his then current record company for exploring a more traditionally country sound. "You can call me erratic," Young said when asked at the time about his tendency toward musical shape-shifting, "but I've been consistent about it, consistently erratic." Always celebrated for his musical versatility, A Treasure, is akin to a sonic time capsule, instantly transporting the listener to the time and place when it was made. "I love this record," Young says. "I hadn't heard these takes in 25 years, but when we unearthed them co-producer Ben Keith said, 'This is a treasure.'" - amazon.com

ROBERT WYATT - Going A Little Bit: A Little History Of Robert Wyatt (1994)
Robert Wyatt was a founding member of the Soft Machine, who along with Pink Floyd Helped to transform the late sixties psychedelic scene in the UK into something more lasting. Through successive albums, Soft Machine soon moved toward a more jazz-based fusion with rock music, punctuated by Wyatt's distinctive drumming and vocals, attracting a massive following across Europe. After extensive touring, Wyatt left intending to pursue a solo career, but instead assembled Matching Mole who released two critically acclaimed LP's before disbanding prematurely. In 1973, Wyatt fell from a third floor window during a party, leaving him paralysed from the waist downwards. From that day onwards he has concentrated his efforts into solo recordings, mixing simple and effective keyboard melody lines with poignant lyrics, often filled with personal and political references. The results have proved both haunting and reflective, even producing two chart hits - his 1974 re-working of 'I'm a Believer', and the 1983 Falklands War indictment 'Shipbuilding' written especially for him by Elvis Costello.
A scarce, hard to find, 2-CD UK import set. It contains a basic overview of Wyatt's career, listed in chronological order. It includes his work with Soft Machine, Matching Mole, and outtakes and previously unreleased tracks.

LES PAUL & FRIENDS - American Made World Played (2005)
The range of artists stepping up to pay tribute to the master electric guitarist as he turns ninety is staggering. From '50s and '60s guitar slingers like Buddy Guy, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Steve Miller to stars of subsequent decades like Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, Richie Sambora, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, they cross continents and generations. The songs celebrate the Les Paul guitar as well as the man. While he appears throughout, he's part of a generally raucous setting that leaves no volume knob unturned. The guests are often also the vocalists, but it's the guitars that carry the day. Purists may wag their fingers at the use of Sam Cooke's vocals in a contemporary recording, but Les Paul himself was never afraid of what new possibilities a tape recorder could unlock.
Released in celebration of Les Paul's 90th birthday, AMERICAN MADE WORLD PLAYED pays tribute to the master guitarist and inventor who changed the face of jazz, country, blues, and rock with his recording and guitar-design innovations. While the lineup here is stellar and includes vocalists Sting, Joss Stone, and Mick Hucknall (Simply Red), and guitarists Joe Perry (Aerosmith) and Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), among others, the album is at its best when it allows Paul to shine in an instrumental setting, as on the slinky rendition of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" and the funky "69 Freedom Special." - cduniverse.com

NEAL MORSE - Testimony (2003) & Testimony 2 (2011)
L.A.-based singer/songwriter and guitarist Neal Morse began his musical career early, taking piano lessons at five and performing in musicals and beginning guitar by the age of nine. By the time he reached his twenties, Morse wrote two musicals and played with Al Stewart and Peter White. After returning from an extensive European trip, Morse formed the progressive rock band Spock's Beard with his brother Al; the group released its debut album, The Light, in 1994. In addition to his duties with Spock's Beard, Morse released his self-titled solo debut 1999 on Metal Blade Records, and produced and arranged all of the album's tracks. With 2003's Testimony, Morse began to infuse his deeply held religious convictions into his work, a trend that continued with 2004's One and 2005's ?. In 2006 he collaborated with Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and bassist Randy George on Cover to Cover, yes, a covers collection. Morse resumed that collaboration in 2007 on his highly controversial concept album Sola Scriptura. In 2011, Morse returned to the story he started in 2003 with Testimony Two, which furthered detailed his his spiritual awakening as well as his decision to leave Spock's Beard.

2003 - Testimony
"Testimony" is a progressive rock concept album by Neal Morse. Released in 2003, this double-album is in five sections detailing the composer's life and conversion to Christianity. The album features performances from ex-Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and Kerry Livgren of Kansas, although the majority of instruments are played by Morse himself.

The album is a continuation of his first solo Christian Prog album ("Testimony") and contains three sections detailing the composer's life and conversion to Christianity. Neal returns with his normal solo-album bandmates Mike Portnoy and Randy George, but he also features many guests, including a vocal reunion of Spock's Beard in the song "Time Changer", which focuses on Neal's past with Spock's Beard and features a return of their multi-vocal parts that the band was known for. The album comes with a second disc of unrelated original songs, one of which is the epic "Seeds Of Gold", featuring a guitar solo by Steve Morse. UFO - Let It Roll [4CD, Box Set] (2010)
2010 four CD live archive box set from the British Hard rockers. Let It Roll features rare and previously unreleased concert performances by the classic line up of Schenker, Mogg, Way, Raymond and Andy Parker. 55 digitally remastered tracks.
This is a great release from UFO. Discs 1, 2, and 4 being similar to 'Live on Earth', 'Werewolves from London', and Disc 2 of 'Covenant' in capturing Michael Schenker at his rawest. Schenker's soloing on Disc 1 has at times to be heard to be believed - though the rest of the band lack a bit of pace on this recording and it is as if Michael is trying to make up for this by injecting energy. Disc 3 is certainly not Michael Schenker, but a '79 performance by Paul Chapman. Chapman is on form, reproducing live the kind of blistering incendiary detonations we find in studio form on 'No Place to Run'.

Rhino’s 4-disc HEAVY METAL BOX is the most comprehensive anthology of the influential genre ever. Featuring legendary stars from multiple labels, the box’s size lives up its thundering sound arranged chronologically, it collects 70 classic tracks tracing the evolution of metal through its first golden age, 1968-1991. Encompassing proto-metalists, hard rock icons, thrashers, progressive acts, speedsters, pop-metal MTV favorites, and more, a who’s who of masters get their due. The box also boasts essays from Ronnie James Dio and Lita Ford, plus and a detailed history of metal by Mick Wall. Surveying the last years covered by the box, Wall concludes, metal had come full circle to the point where it was simultaneously riven by so many new categories and subgenres that you needed an encyclopedia to make sense of it all and yet it was more universally popular than ever before. The same could be said today so fly your devil horn salutes and crank it to 11 for five hours of musical mayhem. - amazon.com

CHICAGO - Live In '75 (2011, Rhino)
After releasing its eighth consecutive gold album in just six years, Chicago embarked upon a massive stadium tour in 1975 that’s considered to be one of its finest. The shows found the group at the pinnacle of its prowess, combining the jaw-dropping musicality and contagious onstage energy that made Chicago one of the most successful acts in American pop history. Rhino Handmade provides a snapshot from this extraordinary tour for the ages with a two-disc set that contains two hours of previously unreleased performances recorded June 24-26 at the Capital Centre in Largo, Maryland. Live in ’75 includes selections from all of the group’s albums through its then-current Chicago VIII. The set flows like a greatest hits collection that spans nearly every smash – from Robert Lamm’s smooth baritone on “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” to the Lee Loughnane-penned hit “Call On Me” – but leaves room for beloved album tracks like the latin-flavored “Mongonucleosis.” The set also includes a complete performance of the crowd-pleasing “Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon” suite that James Pankow composed for the Chicago II album. The band came out rocking, opening with “Introduction” from the ensemble’s stunning 1969 debut Chicago Transit Authority before shifting to “Anyway You Want” from its most recent LP. The combination neatly distilled Chicago’s past and present into a powerful one-two punch that established an intensity that did not let up through the entire show. Live in ’75 includes Chicago’s distinctive take on a pair of cover tunes. The first, “I’m A Man,” finds the band making The Spencer Davis Group classic their own, led by a rousing guitar performance from Terry Kath. The second, the Beatles’ “Got To Get You Into My Life,” was significant because it was the song that originally seeded Walter Parazaider’s imagination with the notion of a new kind of rock ’n’ roll band with horns!

EAST OF EDEN - East of Eden (1971)
East of Eden is a perfect illustration of the futility that England's Decca Records faced in cultivating progressive rock (apart from the Moody Blues). A critically acclaimed jazz-fusion band with a strong Eastern music influence, they were a natural for stardom during the late '60s; indeed, they might've taken the wind out of the sails of the Mahavishnu Orchestra very fast, but they never became more than a cult act in England, with a strong local following in London, especially on the underground scene, even as they attracted serious audiences in continental Europe. The band was formed in Bristol in 1967 by Dave Arbus (flute, sax, trumpet), Ron Caines (alto sax), and Geoff Nicholson (guitar, vocals). Caines and Nicholson had previously played together in an R&B-based band, and the Caines and Arbus had been playing together for a couple of years. Future Wings member Geoff Britton was their original drummer, although the group's rhythm section was never an essential focus of their work, and they went through quite a few musicians. Arbus had been trained in the violin, but it wasn't until he saw Jean-Luc Ponty playing on-stage in Paris that he realized the possibilities that the amplified instrument offered. He added the electric violin to his repertory, greatly broadening the band's range and sound, and the following year, they moved to London. The group was signed to Decca's progressive rock imprint Deram label in 1968, and cut two LPs, Mercator Projected and Snafu, of which the latter made it into the British Top 30, while a single, "Ramadhan," got to number two in France. Their one big hit in England, "Jig-a-Jig," made the Top Ten there and became something of a stylistic albatross around the band's neck, since it didn't resemble their usual sound or anything else they normally played. Caines and Nicholson left the band as the '70s began, and Arbus kept it together. They jumped to the Harvest label, but their work there never caught on, coinciding as it did with a change in style and a veering away from Eastern music to a country-ish sound. Arbus left in the early '70s and was replaced by future Rory Gallagher collaborator Joe O'Donnell. The band carried on through the mid-'70s as almost exclusively a European act, recording and releasing albums in Europe only. The three original core members reunited in 1999 for the recording and release of the album Kalipse. - allmusic.com

ANDREW GOLD - Never Let Her Slip Away - 14 Classic Tracks (1993)
Andrew Gold, the singer-songwriter best known for 1977's "Lonely Boy" single, died Friday in his sleep from a heart attack. He was 59. That song was heard in films such as Boogie Nights and Water Boy. Another song, "Thank You for Being a Friend," was heard on TV each week for almost a decade as the theme song for The Golden Girls. Gold was also known for his late '70s tune, "Do Wah Diddy." The L.A. native began writing songs at age 13. By the early 1970s, he was working as a musician, songwriter and record producer. He was a member of the Los Angeles band Bryndle. In 1975, Gold set out on a solo career and released four albums during that decade. The year 1975 also marked Gold's successful collaboration with Art Garfunkel. He played all the instruments on Garfunkel's No. 1 UK hit, "I Only Have Eyes For You." Aside from Garfunkel, Gold also worked with or produced music for artists including Cher, Brian Wilson, Don Henley, Celine Dion and members of the Beatles. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. - people.com

TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND - Revelator (2011) ![]()
![]()
![]()
Revelator is the long-awaited, song-oriented debut album by the husband-wife team of singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks. Filled with smoky, blues-dipped rockers and heart-stilling ballads that show off, respectively, the gutsier and softer side of Tedeschi's vocal ability, plus a series of emotive, story-telling solos shaped by Trucks's uncanny agility on slide-guitar, Revelator also serves to introduce the couple s new, 11-piece ensemble Tedeschi Trucks Band. A dramatic leap forward for two of the music world's most dynamic performers, Revelator is a confident yet unforced triumph offering a cohesive vision: an idyllic, musical world in which the echoes of so many great traditions Delta blues and Memphis soul, Sixties rock and Seventies funk organically flow together, blending with an entirely original, modern sensibility.
Most notably, Revelator features the newly formed Tedeschi Trucks Band, an eleven-member ensemble overflowing with talent and musical familiarity. Brothers Oteil Burbridge (noted for his years as bassist with the Allman Brothers Band) and Kofi Burbridge (longtime keyboardist/flutist with The Derek Trucks Band) have joined forces with a pair of drummers J. J. Johnson and Tyler Greenwell, trumpeter Maurice Brown, tenor saxophonist Kebbi Williams, trombonist Saunders Sermons, and harmony singers Mark Rivers and Mike Mattison. (Additionally, Ryan Shaw and David Ryan Harris supplied harmony vocals to various tracks on the album, and Alam Khan adds his masterful sarod playing to "These Walls".) The fact that this aggregation includes so many musicians related by experience and blood clearly adds to the notion of Revelator as a true group album, the product of a musical family. - amazon.com

JAN & DEAN - Carnival Of Sound (2010)
An essential archival release - if not as well-known as Brian Wilson's Smile, Carnival of Sound is just as tantalizing a "lost" artifact of the psychedelic '60s, buried these 40-plus years. And those factors alone make owning it a no-brainer for fans of Jan & Dean, surf music, or psychedelic music (and it embraces both). Jan & Dean had always managed to quietly impress listeners by slipping these beautifully produced jewels past them as pop music, but on Carnival of Sound, they were very obviously calling more attention to the layers of sound swirling and shifting below the surface of material.
Jan Berry and Dean Torrence rode a wave of popularity in the early '60s that earned the So-Cal duo more than a dozen Top 40 hits, including the #1 smash "Surf City." The group's good fortune came to a tragic halt in 1966 when Berry suffered debilitating injuries in a car accident near Dead Man's Curve, a treacherous road that, ironically, was the subject of one of the group's earlier hits. As he battled tirelessly to recover, Berry spent the next three years recording songs for a new Jan and Dean album to be titled Carnival of Sound. Despite the quality of the music, the album was never released and became one of rock 'n' roll's lost treasures, until now. This single CD contains 29 songs, including mono and stereo mixes of the album along with bonus tracks from the 1966-68 sessions. - amazon.com

KT TUNSTALL - Drastic Fantastic (2007)
Drastic Fantastic is the second studio album by Scottish Singer-songwriter KT Tunstall. It was released by Relentless Records on 10 September 2007 in the United Kingdom and 18 September 2007 in the United States and Canada. The album received warm, though conservative, praise by most critics. Music critics from The Observer gave Drastic Fantastic five stars, stating the album was "bursting with so many hits that Tunstall's comic-book life is about to go stratospheric". Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone gave the album three-and-a-half stars out of five, and said that the album's sound was a "flashback" to 1997 by noting similarities between the songs on Drastic Fantastic and songs written 10 years earlier. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic gave the album four out of five, calling Drastic Fantastic "a rare beast: a pop album with a songwriter's heart". However, some critics were less impressed, stating that the album was overproduced and lacked the "folky" touch of her previous album Eye to the Telescope. - wikipedia

BILLIE DAVIS - Tell Him: The Decca Years (2005)
She may only have had one significant hit , a feisty rendition of The Exciters' R&B classic 'Tell Him', but Billie Davis remains one of the greatest British female vocalist of the 1960s. Compiled with the co-operation of Billie Davis Herself, Tell Him is a testimony to an unsung heroine of '60s pop whose reassessment has been long overdue. This is a superb collection comprised of Billie Davis' singles for England's Decca Records, most of them dating between 1967 and 1970 (with four tracks from her 1963 stint with the label), and augmented with a handful of tracks from her self-titled 1970 album. It's all superb girl group-style pop, with a distinctly American, soulful edge and even an occasional psychedelic intrusion, highlighted by her spirited rendition of "I Want You to Be My Baby" and her impassioned version of "Wasn't It You," among other tracks. There's not a loser in the bunch and, in fact, the songs all show an amazing consistency despite origins as different as Joe Cocker, Carole King, Ian Anderson (yes, she covered "Living in the Past"), and Neil Diamond. Strangely enough, the appending of the four early Decca sides at the end of the CD is sort of jarring, throwing listeners back to an earlier (though still eminently enjoyable) era of British pop/rock. The sound is excellent throughout and the CD comes with an excellent career overview on Davis. - cduniverse.com

BLONDIE - Panic Of Girls (2011)
"Panic of Girls" is the ninth studio album from the American New Wave band Blondie. The album was released 30th May 2011. Panic of Girls is Blondie's first album since 2003's The Curse of Blondie. The album was recorded between October–December 2009 in Woodstock, New York, and May 2010 in Hoboken, New Jersey, being the second album in the band's history to be recorded outside of Manhattan, after 1980s Autoamerican which was recorded in Los Angeles. The band's drummer, Clem Burke, also said that about 35 songs were recorded during the sessions for the album, with only 14 that are going to make the album.[1] He has also said that all band members have contributed to the release, with vocalist Debbie Harry writing most of the lyrics. Original Blondie keyboardist Jimmy Destri planned to contribute to the writing and recording of this album, but was ultimately not a part of it. The album name came from the lyrics of a demo track recorded for the album: "The End Of The World", which ultimately did not appear on it's final track list. The former names of the album were: Songs From The Red Coat and Panic Of Truth. Finally the album name was eventually changed into Panic Of Girls. - wikipedia

Arrows were an English American band based in London, England. The group, which formed in 1974 and disbanded in 1977, included singer/bassist Alan Merrill, guitarist Jake Hooker and drummer Paul Varley. They had hit singles in 1974 and 1975 with "Touch Too Much", "My Last Night With You" and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," all produced by Mickie Most on RAK Records. "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was later covered by Joan Jett. The Arrows had two 14-week television shows called Arrows in 1976 and 1977 on Granada Television, produced by Muriel Young. They are the only band to have two weekly TV series and no records released during the run of either series, a result of a conflict between the band and Mickie Most. Each series consisted of 14 shows, 30 minutes in length. There were 28 shows broadcast in total. Their final single "Once Upon A Time" was released two months before the first show of their first series in 1976. The first manager of the Arrows was Peter Meaden, who had also managed The Who in the early 1960s. He came up with the band's name, which originates from The Who's logo, with the arrow pointing up.

Young, dark, and smoldering -- painfully good-looking and talented too -- the Arrows were the sort of band every marketing department dreams of. The problem is, dreams don't always come true. Despite a concerted two-year push that saw the Arrows gifted with everything from a songwriting team with a multi-platinum pedigree to their own prime-time television series, still the band has just two lasting claims to fame -- they scored a British Top Ten single with their first-ever release, "A Touch Too Much," and they wrote the Joan Jett anthem "I Love Rock'n'Roll." Fame does not shortchange them. Across the six singles that make up the first half of this collection, and the debut album that completes it, the Arrows are revealed as a competent, ambitious pop band, but little more. They accrue points for penning a lot of their own material, but -- "I Love Rock'n'Roll" aside -- still the best numbers were written either by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman -- of Sweet, Mud, and Smokey fame -- or Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, the team that had already tasted glory behind the Bay City Rollers and Kenny, and who would soon be touching it again with Slik. Indeed, the Arrows' version of the duo's "Boogiest Band in Town," though one of the finest tracks in the band's entire catalog, was nothing more than a cover of an earlier Slik 45. The two Chinn & Chapman A-sides that opened the Arrows' account, "A Touch Too Much" and "Toughen Up," are similarly strong, while Roger Ferris' "My Last Night With You" at least brought the band a second hit, and an impossibly catchy chorus. Elsewhere, however, the band sinks into serious AOR pop mode, with only the occasional nod toward Bad Company rock-isms to break the sequence -- even "I Love Rock'n'Roll" sounds less than sparkling in its original incarnation, while the band's final 45, "Once Upon a Time," is sonorous enough to be a Walker Brothers outtake. The First Hit album follows this same formula, again serving up a handful of memorable numbers and proving reasonably enjoyable if you don't listen too hard. But for a band whose greatest moments stretch to just a couple of songs, The Singles Collection Plus serves up more Arrows than the best-made quiver could hold. - cduniverse.com

THE BEACH BOYS - In Concert (1973)
Released in the wake of Holland, one of the Beach Boys' last creative triumphs, this 1973 set captures a band feverishly trying to reconcile its past, present, and future--no mean feat considering Brian Wilson had long since retreated into seclusion due to overwhelming personal problems and friction with his bandmates. Aside from the Ramones-like energy of their teenybopping early '60s prime, this is arguably the band's performing peak. Supplemented by Holland sidemen Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar (who would later add the Rutles to his strange résumé), the band offers up several strong versions of then-recent material ("Sail On Sailor," "Trader," "Darlin'," "Marcella"), a few key Pet Sounds cuts, and a few surprises (a bluesy "Leaving This Town," the haunting Wild Honey track "Let the Wind Blow") in this collection's first half, then largely turns matters over to Mike Love for an energetic run-through--and disturbing preview--of their long-running oldies revue. Also included are new liner notes by longtime Wilson biographer Timothy White. - amazon.com

PINK FLOYD - Delicate Sound Of Thunder (1988)
Delicate Sound of Thunder is a Pink Floyd live double album from the David Gilmour-led era of the band which was recorded over five nights at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York in August 1988 and mixed at Abbey Road Studios in September 1988. It was released on 22 November 1988, through EMI Records in the United Kingdom and Columbia Records in the United States. This was the last Pink Floyd release made with vinyl as its primary medium; all subsequent releases have been made with CD as their primary medium.
In the late 1980s, Pink Floyd came roaring back with a decent studio album and an awesome stadium tour. Delicate Sound is a postcard from that tour that has the impossible task of capturing the spectacle of flying pigs and crashing beds. Also without the brood and bass of the departed Roger Waters, even a large backing band can't recreate the majesty of the original recording of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond." Still "On the Turning Away," from A Momentary Lapse of Reason, sounds better than the studio version and a smattering of Floyd's best cuts from "The Wall" and "Darkside of Moon" make this live album a decent collection. - amazon.com

FOCUS - Live At The Rainbow (1973)
The instrumental rockers of the early '70s never were any good at dulling down their musical expertise; and, indeed, it's only a matter of seconds into their first and only live release -- Live at the Rainbow -- until one realizes just how talented Focus were. Jan Akkerman, named "World's Best Guitarist" by Melody Maker in 1973 ahead of Eric Clapton and others, was amazingly on form in this performance. Thijs Van Leer, chief songwriter and performer in the band, showcased his talents on flute, vocals, and organ with unparalleled finesse. Bert Ruiter knocked out his basslines tight to Pierre Van Der Linden's drums, undoubtedly two of the finest players on their respective instruments. It would be so easy to go off on a tangent explaining the mastery that Focus had musically; suffice to say, however, the bands technical proficiency is rarely matched in the world of rock. Live at the Rainbow featured some of the band's best and most well known tracks: "Sylvia," "Hocus Pocus," "Focus II," and so on. Although much of the content sticks closely to its original studio form (12-minute tracks were regular on studio albums), with maybe an extra solo or two thrown in for good measure, a few songs host drastic changes. "Hocus Pocus," for example, is almost unrecognizable. This live version is multiple times faster than its studio counterpart -- those familiar with only the studio version are certainly in for a shock! Throughout the album the performance is simply astonishing. Live at the Rainbow is a fine purchase for any Focus fan, or, indeed, anyone looking for a band with a good degree of originality and musical ability. - cduniverse.com

ELIZA GILKYSON - Roses At The End Of Time (2011)
Eliza Gilkyson delivers the album of her career with Roses at the End of Time. Once again pushing the boundaries of folk music, Eliza cleverly disguises her sly social commentaries within catchy acoustic ballads, edgy folk rockers and fresh electronic atmospheres that paint a vivid image of life's strles and triumphs in a world that she feels is "poised on the edge of moral, economic and environmental bankruptcy." The ten songs of Roses at the End of Time run the full spectrum of emotions and issues. Whether it's in socio-political anthems like the soulful, slithering "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" or moody ballads like "Blue Moon Night" and "Belle of the Ball," a collection of fragmented memories of her mother, Eliza intermingles the political with the personal, with stinging edge and heart-aching elegance. Not straying too far from her folk roots, Eliza delivers a down-home banjo-driven Americana cover of her brother Tony Gilkyson's song "Death in Arkansas" which also features vocals by fellow Red House artists John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky. The driving rocker "Looking for a Place" and the reflective "Once I had a Home" proves she is a powerful songwriter whose rich, poetic lyrics reveal her as a songwriter at the height of her storytelling powers. - amazon.com

REO Speedwagon - The Hits (1988)
REO Speedwagon is an American rock band. Formed in 1967, the band grew in popularity during the 1970s and peaked in the early 1980s. "Hi Infidelity" is the group's most commercially successful album, selling over ten million copies and charting four Top 40 hits in the US. Over the course of its career, the band has sold more than forty million records and has charted thirteen Top 40 hits. REO Speedwagon's popularity has declined over the years but the band still tours regularly, and remains popular on the fair and casino circuits and teams up with other acts to play larger venues. In summer 2010, the band – then touring with Pat Benatar – announced that it will release a 30th anniversary deluxe edition reissue of "Hi Infidelity".
"The Hits" is a compilation album from REO Speedwagon. It contains hits such as "Can't Fight This Feeling" and "Keep on Loving You", as well as new tracks "Here with Me" and "I Don't Want to Lose You". A conspicuous absentee from the album is "Keep the Fire Burnin'," which reached #7 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1982.

GEORGE MARTIN [With Heroes & Friends...] - In My Life (1998)
There used to be a section in every record store labeled "Personalities." It was where often painful renderings of contemporary pop hits by the likes of Sebastian Cabot and Mae West could be found biding their time until Rhino Records' Golden Throats series could gleefully discover them. In My Life is a Personality Record with two crucial distinctions: a surprisingly low pain threshold and Sir George Martin. Deciding to make a farewell album on his own terms, the gentlemanly former Beatles producer gathered an eclectic crowd of "heroes and friends" (Jeff Beck, Jim Carrey, Phil Collins, Sean Connery, Billy Connolly, Celine Dion, Goldie Hawn, Vanessa Mae, Bobby McFerrin, Robin Williams, and John Williams) to cover a selection of Fab Four tunes.
There are surprising revelations throughout. Carrey displays a vocal prowess as elastic as his face--and a good deal more refined--on "I Am the Walrus". Instrumental showcases include Beck's subtle tonal explorations of "A Day in the Life," and Vanessa Mae and John Williams milking the latent classicism from "Because" and "Here Comes the Sun," respectively. And then there's the overly competent MOR ("Here, There and Everywhere" by Dion, Collins's "Golden Slumbers," "Carry That Weight," and "The End"), and one big disappointment (McFerrin and Williams's "Come Together" succumbs to the latter's incessant vocal ming). This recording recalls Martin's early larks with Peter Sellers and the Goons one moment (Hawn's breathy nightclub lark on "A Hard Day's Night," Connolly's ringmaster turn on "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite"), and reveals his own sentimental heart the next (Connery's restrained reading of "In My Life," Martin's own compositions, "Friends and Lovers" and "Pepperland Suite"). An odd, yet decidedly dignified final memento from the man who earned a Knighthood being the "Fifth Beatle." - amazon.com
