JUDY COLLINS - Greatest Folk Songs (2011)

Singer Judy Collins was, along with Joan Baez, one of the two major interpretive singers to emerge from the folk revival of the late '50s and early ‘60s. Like Baez, she began singing traditional folk songs, then moved on to popularize the work of contemporary singer/songwriters, even writing her own songs occasionally. Unlike Baez, she used her classical music training to evolve into being a singer of art songs and show tunes, sometimes employing semi-classical arrangements. In a career that began at the end of the 1950s and was still going strong more than 50 years later, she consistently performed 50-80 concerts a year, and she recorded extensively, her commercial success reaching its apex from the late ‘60s to the mid-‘70s, as six of her albums from the period achieved gold or platinum sales. Although she was primarily an albums artist, she also enjoyed a few hit singles, notably her Top Ten, Grammy-winning cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," which helped establish Mitchell as a songwriter; an a cappella version of the hymn "Amazing Grace"; and the show tune "Send in the Clowns," which led to a Song of the Year Grammy for its composer, Stephen Sondheim... - allmusic.com

LINDA RONSTADT - The Very Best Of (2002)

Linda Ronstadt, who emerged from SoCal's vaunted early-'70s country-folk scene, became the American female rock superstar of the Me Decade. After the initial success of the Stone Poneys' Michael Nesmith-penned "Different Drum," Ronstadt expanded her horizons through interpretations of a long string of successful pop and R&B covers. Along the way she championed emerging songwriters like Warren Zevon ("Poor Poor Pitiful Me") and contemporary favorites like Neil Young ("Love Is a Rose") in the bargain. As the formula waned with the changing tastes of the '80s, she briefly turned to new wave before stepping boldly back to the pop standards of the '30s, '40s, and '50s. Unfortunately, this collection inexplicably skips over that three-album collaboration with arranger-conductor Nelson Riddle, a body of work that presaged the 1990s' lounge-pop revival by a full decade--and outclassed it by miles. It also eschews a compelling contemporary Latin chapter of her career in favor of her winning collaborations with Aaron Neville ("Don't Know Much" and "All My Life") and less successful AC fodder like "Winter Light" and "Somewhere Out There" with James Ingram. A good primer to Ronstadt's immense vocal talents and recording history, but one that's flawed by some crucial missing chapters. - amazon.com

TERRY JACKS - Seasons In The Sun (1974)

Terrance Ross "Terry" Jacks is a Canadian singer, songwriter, record producer and environmentalist. "Seasons in the Sun" is an English-language adaptation of the song "Le Moribond" by Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel with lyrics by American singer-poet Rod McKuen. It became a worldwide hit in 1974 for Terry Jacks and became a Christmas Number 1 in 1999 for Westlife. The Jacks version is one of the fewer than thirty all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) copies worldwide.

2008 release, the first time on CD for the debut LP by Canadian singer/songwriter Terry Jacks who had previously been a member of The Poppy Family. The title track gave Terry a #1 across the globe reaching the top spot in the UK, USA, Australia, and Germany, to name but a few countries, on it's way to selling over six million copies. The single also topped the charts in Canada and remains that country's largest selling single ever. The four bonus cuts, all appearing on CD for the first time, include Terry's last Bell Records single "Rock N Roll (I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life)" which hit #25 in his native Canada. - amazon.com

RHYTHM KINGS - Struttin' Our Stuff (1977) thumbupthumbupthumbup

While the former Rolling Stones bassist's prior solo releases were rather weedy singer-songwriter efforts, Struttin' Our Stuff is a pleasant diversion that's more along the lines of Wyman's '80s side-combo Willy and the Poorboys. On Struttin' Our Stuff, the ex-Stone teams up with an impressive assortment of famous friends for an impressively played but enjoyably casual set of rootsy originals and classic covers, including a soulful reworking of the '70s Stones tune "Melody." In addition to Wyman's trademark bass pulse and occasional vocals, the album features guest guitarists Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, and Albert Lee, frequent Stones sideman Bobby Keys on sax, and Procol Harum's Gary Brooker on piano. Guest vocals come from English R&B great Georgie Fame, Ace/Squeeze/Mike and the Mechanics singer Paul Carrack, and talented newcomer Beverly Skeete.

Digitally remastered edition of this 1997 album from the former Rolling Stones bassist and his Rhythm Kings. Struttin' Our Stuff was the band's debut album and is packed with lively numbers that capture the spirit of the Blues from different eras. Among the dozen tracks are jive tunes like 'Jitterbug Boogie' and slow Blues such as 'Bad To Be Alone'. There are also 'covers' of classic hits including Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Green River' and the R&B standard 'Tobacco Road'. The band clearly loves playing together and features an all-star cast of seasoned players, notably Georgie Fame on organ and vocals. Among the guitarists, Eric Clapton, Albert Lee and Peter Frampton contribute some hot solos, and there is an impressive roster of brass players and backing vocalists. - amazon.com

ALBERT COLLINS - Frigorific (2011)

There has never been and may never be again a bluesman quite like Albert Collins. "The Master Of The Telecaster" was born on October 1, 1932, in Leona, Texas. A cousin of the legendary Lightnin' Hopkins, Collins emerged with a blues sound and style all his own, featuring a combination of icy echo, shattering, ringing, sustained high notes, an ultra-percussive right-hand attack, and an unheard-of minor key guitar tuning (taught to him by his cousin Willow Young). Deeply influenced by T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker and Gatemouth Brown, Collins absorbed the sounds of Mississippi, Chicago, and especially Texas. He formed his own band in 1952, packing clubs around Houston. In the early 1960s, Collins' "cool sound" instrumentals like the million-seller Frosty (recorded with a young Johnny Winter and Janis Joplin in attendance at the studio) and follow-ups Sno Cone and Thaw Out were all over R&B radio. Soon he was sharing stages with his idols Gatemouth Brown and T-Bone Walker. Then, in the mid-'60s (following a move from Texas to Kansas City to California), Collins broke into the rock 'n' roll world, releasing three albums produced by members of Canned Heat, and began playing the San Francisco psychedelic circuit. But Albert's greatest success came after he signed with Alligator in 1978 and cut ICE PICKIN''. It won the Best Blues Album of the Year Award from the Montreux Jazz Festival, and was nominated for a Grammy. His following Alligator albums helped earn Collins every award the blues world had to offer. And, along with Johnny Copeland and Robert Cray (who decided on a career as a bluesman after seeing Collins play his high school prom) Collins cut the Grammy-winning SHOWDOWN!. Even after he was firmly established as a major modern bluesman, Collins never got too big for his fans and friends, and never took things easy. And he never relinquished the wheel of his battered tour bus that he loved to drive so much. Along with his band, The Icebreakers, Collins' live shows -- driven by his kinetic stage presence -- were legendary testaments to the power of the blues. With his untimely death in 1993, Albert Collins left behind a blues legacy that continues to amaze and delight blues fans all over the world. - amazon.com

EMMYLOU HARRIS - Hard Bargain (2011) thumbup

Produced by Jay Joyce, Emmylou Harris' 21st studio album features the striking Harris originals "Darlin' Kate" (written for Kate McGarrigle) and "The Road" (written for Gram Parsons). On Hard Bargain, her third Nonesuch disc, she offers 11 original songs - three of them co-written with Grammy and Oscar-winning composer Will Jennings - that touch on the autobiographical while reaching for the universal. She pays tribute to lost friends like her legendary mentor Gram Parsons ("The Road") and her frequent collaborator, the late Kate McGarrigle ("Darlin' Kate"), and also finds poignancy and fresh meaning in events both historical and personal. On "My Name Is Emmett Till" she recalls a pivotal act of violence during the civil rights movement in a heartbreakingly plain-spoken narrative, told from the victim's perspective; on "Goodnight Old World," she fashions a bittersweet lullaby to her newly born grandchild, contrasting a grown-up's world-weariness with a baby's wide-eyed wonder. Few in pop or country music have achieved such honesty or revealed such maturity in their writing. Forty years into her career, Harris shares the hard-earned wisdom that comes with getting older, though she never stops looking ahead. In addition to the luminous originals Harris composed, the title track comes from Ron Sexsmith - a folk-rock ballad Harris had been coveting for a long time - and uplifting closing number "Cross Yourself" was contributed by Joyce. - cduniverse.com

TAB BENOIT - Medicine (2011) thumbup

Tab Benoit is the wildly popular musician who hails from Houma, Louisiana. His distinct cajunified blues and soul have been winning fiercely loyal fans for decades now. A simple listen to any one of his many popular CDs, or a visit to a live show will make a loyal fan out of anyone. Benoit’s latest album, "Medicine", is a fantastic, powerful addition to Tab’s already robust repertoire. Almost nobody can beat Tab Benoit for playing raw, dirty-sounding roadhouse blues. There is something about when he gets to rocking that gets everybody going in the way the best blues and rock ‘n’ roll should. Even his guitar tone has that slash-through-your-speakers/earbuds psycho tone that everyone from Travis Wammack to Johnny Guitar Watson to Earl King perfected in the middle of last century. Benoit’s new record, Medicine, is his latest entry to a great body of work. It’s got some great rockers and shuffles and all-out, shake-what-your-mama- gave-you boogie tunes.

Tab Benoit's seventh solo album features 11 tracks, seven of them co-written by Benoit and Anders Osborne, recorded with a rock-solid roots band of Benoit on guitar, Brady Blade on drums, Ivan Neville on keyboards, and Michael Doucet of Beausoleil on fiddle.

FRANK SINATRA - My Way: The Very Best Of Frank Sinatra (1997)

This collection provides, arguably, the best overall mixture of 'old and new' Sinatra, ever assembled on two CDs. The 46 tracks here include all-time best-sellers disdained perhaps by some of us, as 'weak tea' compared to the strong meat of the Great American Songbook otherwise well-represented in this collection. Yet those same commercial hits, struck the chord with 'baby boomers' needed to re-establish Sinatra's career in the Beatles' era and beyond to a fifth, then a sixth decade of public performances.

My Way: the Best of Frank Sinatra collects 46 tracks culled from the estimable American singer's vast back-catalogue for a remarkable two-CD set. Sinatra was one of the greatest voices of his or any generation, and for the most part, these songs are some of Old Blue Eyes' finest works: among the best are "Come Fly with Me", "Lady Is a Tramp" and "I Get a Kick out of You". - amazon.com

MANNY CHARLTON - Americana Deluxe (2007)

Manny Charlton is notable for being a founding member of and the lead guitarist for the Scottish hard rock band, Nazareth from 1968 to 1990. After leaving Nazareth in 1990, Charlton played some solo shows on the Scottish club circuit, and released his first solo album Drool in 1997, on the Red Steel record label with Neil Miller on vocals. The following year, he relocated to Texas, where he formed the Manny Charlton Band (MCB). The new outfit released a pair of albums — Stonkin and Klone This — before disbanding in 2003. Charlton then focused on solo material again, releasing Say The Word on the Scottish label River Records in 2004. 2005 saw the release of Sharp, which is on the whole a covers album, including Tim Hardin's "Hang On To A Dream" and Bob Dylan's "Shelter From The Storm". Later that year, Charlton completed the follow up to Sharp, the aptly named Sharp Re-Loaded. In early 2006, Charlton joined the Swedish rock band From Behind who also have the ex-Samson frontman Nicky Moore on vocals. From Behind released their debut album titled Game Over, and toured in support of the album around Europe. As of 2007, Charlton is no longer part of the From Behind project. His latest solo album 'Americana Deluxe' was released early April and contains covers of classic songs such as "The Sea Of Love" and Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk". - wikipedia

LARRY CARLTON WITH SPECIAL GUEST ROBBEN FORD - Live In Tolyo (2007) thumbupthumbupthumbup

With blues/jazz guitarist Robben Ford's Soul on Ten (Concord, 2009) receiving widespread attention, it's a good time to look at Live in Tokyo, a somewhat overlooked but unmistakably smokin' 2007 release from another West Coast guitar god, Larry Carlton. Carlton invited Ford to join his band for some dates in Tokyo in the fall of 2006, and it would be hard to find two more compatible yet distinctive guitarists for a set that ranges from down-and-dirty blues to burning samba and a lot in-between. The two go back over 30 years, sometimes playing with the same artists, just not on the same sessions. Both worked with singer/ songwriter Joni Mitchell, and while Carlton was delivering early career-defining moments with Steely Dan, Ford was adding some signature licks to Little Feat. Ford would ultimately move in a more decidedly blues-centric direction while Carlton ventured near smooth jazz territory (but his playing always elevated it above the pack). For Live in Tokyo, both find common ground that leans closer to Ford's stylistic direction, with undeniably virtuosic playing but, as ever, taste trumping technique in a set of largely original material.

ERIC CLAPTON - Acoustic Waltz (London, England - January 16, 1992 - Mid Valley) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

In 1992, Eric Clapton recorded an Unpled performance in London. He rearranged many of his famous songs for the acoustic context, and the resulting Unpled album went on to become the bestselling Unpled album in the U.S., with sales of 10 million. Clapton earned six Grammy Awards for the album, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Rock Male Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song. Clapton caught the "unpled" trend just at the right time, when the public was hungry to hear how well rock stars and their material could hold up when stripped of elaborate production values. Clapton himself seemed baffled by the phenomenon, especially when picking up the armload of Grammys Unpled earned him, including Record and Song of the Year for "Tears in Heaven", the heart-rending elegy to his young son, Conor. That song and a reworked version of "Layla" got most of the attention, but the rest of the album has fine versions of acoustic blues numbers such as "Malted Milk", "Rollin' & Tumblin' and "Before You Accuse Me" that make it worth investigating further.

Another astonishingly perfect release from the folks at Mid Valley, this set contains the entirety of the "Unpled" sessions in both stereo and mono.

TRACY NELSON - In The Here And Now (1993) & I Feel So Good (1995)

A very versatile and talented vocalist, Tracy Nelson is better known for her role as lead singer of Mother Earth. The Nashville sextet had three albums in a country-rock vein make the charts in the late '60s and early '70s. But Nelson is just as capable in soul, R&B, and blues, though she hasn't released many records in that style. Her albums for Flying Fish were more indicative of her eclecticism, but her R&B and blues roots are really evident on her 1993 release In the Here and Now and 1995's I Feel So Good -- both on Rounder Records. Born in California but raised in Madison, WI, Nelson began playing music when she was a student at the University of Wisconsin. Nelson began singing folk and blues at coffeehouses and R&B and rock & roll at parties with a covers band called the Fabulous Imitators. In 1964, she recorded an album for Prestige, Deep Are the Roots, which was produced by Sam Charters. Two years after recording Deep Are the Roots, Nelson headed out to the West Coast, spending some time in Los Angeles before settling in San Francisco. After arriving in San Francisco, she formed Mother Earth in 1968, moving the group to Nashville the following year. The band stayed together for five years, recording several albums for Mercury Records, among a handful of other labels. Nelson left the band in the mid-'70s, embarking on a solo career that saw her release albums for a variety of labels, including Columbia, Atlantic, and Flying Fish. Nelson continued to record and perform into the '90s. In 1993, she released In the Here and Now, her first album for Rounder Records and, not coincidentally, her first straight blues record since she began recording in the '60s. Nelson followed In the Here and Now with several acclaimed records of gritty blues-rock for Rounder, switching to Memphis International for the release of You'll Never Be a Stranger at My Door in 2007. ~ allmusic.com

LOS LOBOS - Wolf Tracks:The Best of Los Lobos (2006)

This triple-Grammy winning group of consummate musicians and songwriters out of East L.A. began their career interpreting Mexican folk music and went on to be a globally renowned purvayor of a diverse and adventurous repertoire of roots-flavored masterpieces. Drawing from rock, country, blues, folk, R&B, Americana, and traditional Spanish and Latin American idioms, Los Lobos continually pushed the boundaries of their sound, while remaining magnificently gritty and graceful throughout. Ten years after their breakthrough 1983 EP And a Time to Dance, Los Lobos released their first retrospective, the double-disc Just Another Band from East L.A. Seven years after that, the career-spanning four-disc box El Cancionero: Mas y Mas appeared, so there hasn't been a shortage of comprehensive Los Lobos collections. What has been missing is a succinct overview, designed for neophytes and casual fans, and that finally arrives in the form of Warner / Rhino's 2006 set, "Wolf Tracks: The Best of Los Lobos".

TRACY NELSON - Victim Of The Blues (2011) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Two-time Grammy nominated vocalist Tracy Nelson makes her Delta Groove debut with a strong return to her roots on her latest effort Victim of the Blues. Although best known for her work with the blues rock group Mother Earth in the late 1960's, Nelson has always had an affinity for the real deep traditional blues art form as evidenced on her very first album, Deep Are The Roots, recorded in Chicago back in 1964. Victim of the Blues finds Nelson fully embracing her blues and gospel roots on an inspired program of material that features songs by Jimmy Reed, Otis Spann, Howlin' Wolf, and Ma Rainey, along with appearances by special guests Angela Strehli and Marcia Ball.

Long acclaimed as one of the truly great singers of the modern era, at 66 Tracy Nelson still has the fire for performing great songs. Her latest project, Victim of the Blues, is a loving caress to her original passion: Old-school blues, particularly the Chicago variety.

NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE - Weld (1991)

Live Rust gets the most props, but if you're looking for a live document of Neil Young and Crazy Horse at their speaker-shredding, stage-scorching best, Weld is an absolute must-own. Fired up by the success of 1990's Ragged Glory, and outraged by the eruption of the Gulf War, Young and his cohorts attacked their 1991 tour like men on a suicide mission. An angry, gunshot-laced version of Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" is the closest thing here to an acoustic reverie; the rest of the album offers up staggeringly intense electric versions of Neil songs both current ("Crime in the City," "Love to Burn," "Rockin' in the Free World") and classic ("Cortez the Killer," "Cinnamon Girl," "Powderfinger"). The back-cover photo of a disheveled Young cradling a broken-stringed guitar pretty much says it all - no one could have unleashed a sonic onslaught this brutal, and emerged unscathed from the experience. - amazon.com

DISC 1:
01. Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) 02. Crime In the City 03. Blowin' In The Wind 04. Welfare Mothers 05. Love To Burn 06. Cinnamon Girl 07. Mansion On The Hill 08. F!#*in Up

DISC 2: 01. Cortez The Killer 02. Powderfinger 03. Love And Only Love 04. Rockin' In The Free World 05. Like A Hurricane 06. Farmer John 07. Tonight's The Night 08. Roll Another Number

ROD STEWART - If We Fall In Love Tonight (1996)

"If We Fall In Love Tonight" is a vagabond collection of Rod Stewart love songs. It mixes some of his biggest hits with several new recordings, a couple of remixes, and soundtrack and compilation cuts that appear here on a proper Rod Stewart album for the first time. The new ones include the title song, a hip-hop tinged ballad written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and the heartfelt "For The First Time," helmed by movie-music maker James Newton Howard. While he was recording with Jam and Lewis, Stewart also cut a beautiful cover of Leo Sayer's 1977 pop hit "When I Need You"; with Howard, he re-made Dan Hill's 1977 hit "Sometimes When We Touch." By some cosmic coincidence, Barry Manilow covered the same two songs for his SUMMER OF '78 collection, released one week after "If We Fall In Love Tonight" . We'll leave that one to the cosmos to ponder. The remainder of the album features some stellar covers from Stewart's past, including sensitive renderings of Carole King's "So Far Away" and Cat Stevens' "First Cut Is The Deepest," along with such classic Stewart originals as "You're In My Heart" and "Tonight's The Night." The album closes with the super-romantic "All For Love," which Stewart recorded with fellow crooners Bryan Adams and Sting for the THREE MUSKETEERS soundtrack. These are gentle songs that celebrate love and beauty. Worries are brushed away as Stewart's emotive, wispy vocals unfold over gorgeous arrangements. - cduniverse.com

TRACKS:
01. If We Fall In Love Tonight 02. For The First Time 03. When I Need You 04. So Far Away 05. Have I Told You Lately (Studio Version Remix) 06. My Heart Can't Tell Me No 07. You're In My Heart 08. The First Cut Is The Deepest 09. I Don't Want To Talk About It 10. Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright) 11. Sometimes When We Touch 12. Downtown Train 13. Broken Arrow 14. Forever Young (1996) 15. All For Love (Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart And Sting)

BRIAN WILSON - 2004

2004 - "Gettin' In Over My Head":
The creative genius behind The Beach Boys' phenomenal hit recordings and the landmark album Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson is widely considered the greatest American-born popular music composer of the rock 'n' roll era. On this, his third solo release, the legendary artist returns to stellar melodic form with a disc's worth of original compositions and unforgettable performances. Superstar cuts include "City Blues," boasting lead guitar from Eric Clapton, "How Can We Still Be Dancing," spotlighting Elton’s vocals and boogie-woogie piano, and "A Friend Like You," written by Wilson for McCartney, and featuring guest vocals by Sir Paul himself! Also features several Brian Wilson/Andy Paley songwriting collaborations from the ’90s, including the title track and "Soul Searchin'," a moving duet with Brian and his late brother and fellow Beach Boy, Carl Wilson. Featuring artwork by Peter Blake, best known for creating the cover for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and booklet includes complete lyrics and in-depth liner notes by Wilson historian, David Leaf. - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. How Could We Still Be Dancin' (feat. Elton John) 02. Soul Searchin' (feat. Carl Wilson) 03. You've Touched Me 04. Gettin' In Over My Head 05. City Blues (feat. Eric Clapton) 06. Desert Drive 07. A Friend Like You (feat. Paul McCartney) 08. Make A Wish 09. Rainbow Eyes 10. Saturday Morning In The City 11. Fairy Tale 12. Don't Let Her Know She's An Angel 13. The Waltz

2004 - "Smile":
The Greatest Album That Never Was finally is. The Beach Boys' uncompleted 1967 album Smile has remained the elusive touchstone of Brian Wilson's brilliant, star-crossed career for decades. Artistic Holy Grail and troubling professional Waterloo for Wilson, a tantalizing prism of unfulfilled promise to his loyal cadre of fans, its story has become pop music's Rashomon. Finally completed via spring 2004 recordings with his stellar, longtime touring band (none of the original '60s sessions were used, though they've been recreated here with often stunning authenticity), it's arguably as alien to contemporary pop as it might have seemed in its intended '67 context - even to ears freshly primed by the glories of Pet Sounds. Collaborator Van Dyke Parks's impressionistic, often mischievous lyrics conjure a collage of arcane 19th-century Americana that's equal parts artful ellipse and aloof nostalgia. But wed to Wilson's innovative composition and recording techniques (echoing beat author William Burroughs's fabled cut 'n' paste methodology and exemplified by the modular "Good Vibrations"), the resulting semisuite confections challenge the boundaries of both song and album form, but with an insouciant charm that's as different from Pet Sounds as that landmark was from "I Get Around." Turns out those hypothetical comparisons to Sgt. Pepper's weren't so far off the mark. - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. Our Prayer - Gee 02. Heroes and Villains 03. Roll Plymouth Rock 04. Barnyard 05. Old Master Painter - You Are My Sunshine 06. Cabin Essence 07. Wonderful 08. Song for Children 09. Child Is Father of the Man 10. Surf's Up 11. I'm In Great Shape - I Wanna Be Around - Workshop 12. Vega-Tables 13. On A Holiday 14. Wind Chimes 15. Mrs. O'Leary's Cow 16. In Blue Hawaii 17. Good Vibrations

HOT TUNA - Steady As She Goes (2011)

Hot Tuna is back with Steady As She Goes, their first all-new studio album in 20 years! Founding members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady masterfully blend Americana rock with blues and acoustic folk on a record that hits their full spectrum of styles from electric and acoustic Hot Tuna to their days in Jefferson Airplane. Reaching a zenith of their historic career, Steady As She Goes is an absolute masterpiece. During their more than four decade long career Jorma and Jack have created some of the most significant music of our time and Steady As She Goes proves that they remain one of the most innovative bands in American music. Recorded at Levon Helm's studio and produced by Grammy-winning producer Larry Campbell, the album captures the energy of their live performances with Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin, drummer Skoota Warner (Cyndi Lauper, Matisyahu, Santana) as well as Campbell joining them on guitar, fiddle, organ and vocals. With their amps turned up to eleven, Hot Tuna rips into the blistering opener "Angel of Darkness" and puts the wind in your sails with the `hop on your Harley and take to the road' free-spirit jams like "Easy Now Revisited" and "A Little Faster." Steady As She Goes tastefully mixes in the acoustic side of Tuna with folk tunes like the moving "What Might Have Been" and the reflective "Second Chances." Along with masterful covers of the blues-rock infused "If This is Love" and a funky rendition of Reverend Gary Davis' "Children of Zion" Steady As She Goes is an iconic record that Hot Tuna fans have been waiting for! - amazon.com

THE STEVE MILLER BAND - Let Your Hair Down - Special Edition (2011)

"Let Your Hair Down", according to plan, follows the number one blues album, "BINGO!", as the second new Steve Miller Band album of the twenty-first century. He not only saved the bluesiest, rockingest, most guitar-playing-est tracks for the second serving, but he spent the additional year between releases tweaking, polishing and obsessively applying finishing touches that make Let Your Hair Down an even more fully realized record than its acclaimed, successful predecessor. Miller sorted through an astronomical number of rhythm and blues, and blues recordings from his CD library seeking material for the auspicious Skywalker Ranch sessions. With classic rock engineer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones) at the console, Miller and his band, longtime musical collaborators road-tested over literally thousands of concerts, blasted through nearly three dozen tracks. This Special Edition features 4 bonus tracks. - amazon.com

After the critical success of their album The Newz, Nazareth approached the recording of this album with a sophisticated challenge: no tricks, no studio gimmicks: just the real thing - the authentic sound of the four members of the band in the studio. The band retired in Prague and wrote all the new songs. Yet, instead of working like most artists do nowadays - artificially creating a polite version of their new compositions- Nazareth worked on the sound, on the essence of their interpretation as well as on the spontaneity of their performance. The band ultimately wanted to bring the real spirit of Rock 'n' Roll back. That's why it only takes one play to realize Big Dogz will be a fans' favorite album as much as No Mean City (1979) or Hair of The Dog (1975). - amazon.com

ARETHA FRANKLIN - The Great American Songbook (2011)

Legacy released this 18-track disc less than two months prior to the 11-CD/one-DVD Take a Look: Aretha Franklin Complete on Columbia. In a sense, The Great American Songbook is nothing more than a box-set sampler, but it shall remain an excellent overview of Franklin's overlooked (or willfully ignored) early-`60s releases, which were heavy on interpretations of songs written by the likes of Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer, George and Ira Gershwin, Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn, and Irving Berlin. While she had not fully blossomed and was years away from the gutsier material of her commercial peak -- only "Rock-a-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody" scratched the Top 40 -- her voice was nonetheless supremely expressive, rooted in her gospel upbringing and drenched in soul. She was no mere stylist; when she sings "Ooh, honey, I'd like to really melt your cold, cold heart," there is as much fire as there is in any given line of "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman." Even the earliest cuts here, taken from late 1960 and early 1961 sessions with the Ray Bryant Combo, are soul through and through. - cduniverse.com

NILS LOFGREN - LIVE

This may read like faint praise, but it's not: Nils Lofgren is one of rock & roll's esteemed journeymen. Though championed as a phenom when he emerged with his band Grin in the early '70s (he'd already played on Neil Young's classic After the Gold Rush when he was 19), stardom stubbornly eluded the gifted vocalist/instrumentalist/songwriter as a bandleader and later as a solo artist. Lofgren, however, proved over time to be a splendid lieutenant for some of the leading lights of the '70s and '80s, including Young, Lou Reed, and Bruce Springsteen. He also kept pling away as a frontman, with relatively little notice. Acoustic Live serves as a nifty career summary for the artist, who recorded this set in 1997, nearly three decades into his recording career. Lofgren sounds anything but drained here as he heartily revisits longtime set staples such as "Keith Don't Go," "Big Tears Fall," and "No Mercy" while mixing in a half-dozen fresh compositions.

Bruce Springsteen has frequently introduced Nils Lofgren as the "greatest, most overqualified" second guitarist in rock & roll. And Lofgren will certainly be remembered as one of the great team players, first as second chair to Neil Young, more recently with the E Street Band. The fact that the Rolling Stones wanted him to replace Mick Taylor and those early tours leading Ringo Starr's band blurs the fact that Lofgren has created some terrific music of his own. This 2003 release is his fifth official live album, and while not quite the raucous affair that 1977's Night After Night, it still proves Lofgren to be a formidable talent as a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader. The set list touches on more obscure moments from his career, dating back to four tunes from his early trio Grin, one from his debut LP, and a touching tribute to long-deceased Crazy Horse co-guitarist Danny Whitten via the latter's "I Don't Want To Talk About It." Lofgren produces a wonderful guitar sound - and covers of "The Star Spangled Banner" and Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (a studio bonus track) reveal that he still possesses one of the more beautiful and soothing voices in all of rock music.

KAREN DALTON

One of the great overlooked talents of the New York folk revival of the early 60s, Dalton continued to enjoy cult status in the years following her departure from the music scene. Ironically, her music only became widely available following her death in 1993. Dalton was born in Texas and raised in Oklahoma, and began singing at an early age. Schooled in the folk tradition, she also became highly proficient on the banjo and 12-string guitar. She relocated to New York City in the late 50s, basing herself in the bohemian enclave of Greenwich Village. It was in this locale that she began performing with a host of other aspiring young folk musicians, including Fred Neil and Bob Dylan. Despite her involvement with some of the scene’s leading lights, Dalton never made the same transition to mainstream acceptance. Her live performances were highly regarded and she was regularly name-dropped by her contemporaries, but her expressive, bluesy singing voice was an acquired taste and a turbulent personal life also made the labels wary of making an approach. It was not until the late 60s that she finally secured a recording contract, with Neil associate Nik Venet instrumental in finally getting Dalton into a studio to complete an album (she had undertaken a few abortive sessions in the mid-60s). Her Capitol Records debut, It’s So Hard To Tell Who’s Going To Love You The Best, included two Neil compositions alongside material by Tim Hardin, Lead Belly and Eddie Floyd / Booker T. Jones. Dalton’s second album, In My Own Time, was released to a largely indifferent response and marked the end of this mercurial talent’s recording career. In retrospect, the album has come to be regarded as a lost classic, with high quality musical backing courtesy of Harvey Brooks, Amos Garrett, Bill Keith, John Simon, John Hall and Richard Bell, and Dalton turning in a series of highly personal interpretations of songs by artists including Dino Valenti (‘Something On Your Mind’), Richard Manuel (‘In A Station’) and George Jones (‘Take Me’). Thereafter, Dalton disappeared from the music scene and little is known of her later years. She died in 1993, having suffered from substance abuse problems throughout her life.

WILLIE NELSON - You Don't Know Me: The Songs Of Cindy Walker (2006)

Cindy Walker was a prolific American songwriter, as well as a country music singer and dancer. As a songwriter Walker was responsible for a large number of popular and enduring songs recorded by many different artists. Though Willie Nelson's thematic albums in recent years have been hit-and-miss, this labor of love is a thorough delight. One Texas legend pays tribute to another and evokes the inspiration of a third, as Nelson puts his stylistic signature on the songbook of Cindy Walker, with arrangements channeling the spirit of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys (whose most familiar songs include many of Walker's). Nelson's conversational phrasing refreshes the familiar title track and brings out the soulful depths of heartfelt (and heartsick) balladry such as "Not That I Care." The nimble band features the interplay of Playboys alum Johnny Gimble on fiddle and the legendary Buddy Emmons on steel guitar, under the production of Nashville veteran Fred Foster. Saloon songs such as "Bubbles in My Beer" and "The Warm Red Wine" meet the mythic West of "Cherokee Maiden" and "Dusty Skies" and the weathered resilience of "Don't Be Ashamed of Your Age" and "I Don't Care," as the collection pays testament not only to Walker's range, but to Nelson's interpretive mastery. - amazon.com

HEIDI BERRY - Pomegranate: An Anthology (2001)

Heidi Berry is an American singer-songwriter. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Berry's mother was a jazz singer with French-Canadian roots, and her father was an actor. The family moved to London in the early 1970s. Introduced to Creation Records by Pete Astor in 1987, Berry recorded Firefly, a six-song mini-album. A full-length album Below the Waves followed in 1989. In 1991, Ivo Watts-Russell asked Berry to sing on the third album by This Mortal Coil, and over the next five years she recorded three albums for 4AD. Berry now teaches at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music.

Heidi Berry may claim her influences are Billie Holiday and Chrissie Hynde, but the British singer/songwriter's hushed, introspective music is closer to Nick Drake, Sarah McLachlan, and especially Beth Orton than anything the Pretenders have ever laid to tape. That said, anyone interested in her haunted folk 'n' country crooning should look to the material on her first anthology, Pomegranate, which wonderfully sums up Berry's career to date. With songs spanning Berry's handful of releases, the album also includes demos, a Bob Mould cover ("Up in the Air"), enhanced videos, and artist-penned stories for each song. Impeccably sequenced, the 14 tracks balance Berry's pessimistic and upbeat moments, and the resulting compilation is a must-have for fans of her late-night lullabies.

CACTUS - 1, 2, 3... (1970/71)

Cactus was initially conceived as early as late 1969 by the Vanilla Fudge rhythm section of bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice with guitarist Jeff Beck and singer Rod Stewart (also from the already dissolved Jeff Beck Group). However, Beck had an automobile accident and was out of the music scene for over a year and Stewart joined Ronnie Wood in Faces. Early 1970 Appice and Bogert brought in blues guitarist Jim McCarty from Mitch Ryder's Detroit Wheels and The Buddy Miles Express, and singer Rusty Day (born Russell Edward Davidson) from Amboy Dukes. This line-up managed three albums (Cactus, One Way...Or Another and Restrictions) before intraband troubles led to McCarty quitting at the end of 1971. Shortly afterwards Day was fired from the group. The fourth and last Cactus album ('Ot 'N' Sweaty) featured original rhythm section Bogert and Appice joined by Werner Fritzschings on guitar, Duane Hitchings on keyboards and Peter French (ex-Leaf Hound and Atomic Rooster) on vocals.

V.A. - The Road To Robert Johnson And Beyond (2007)

During the last quarter of the 20th century, and thanks largely to Eric Clapton's remarkable devotion to his memory, Robert Leroy Johnson posthumously became the most celebrated Delta blues musician of the pre-WWII era. Among numerous editions of his complete works and various anthologies that combine his recordings with those of his contemporaries and followers, J.S.P.'s The Road to Robert Johnson and Beyond combines many of his essential performances with those by dozens of other blues artists from Blind Lemon Jefferson and Henry Thomas to Muddy Waters and Elmore James. 105 tracks fill four CDs with several decades' worth of strongly steeped blues that trace the African American migration from the deep south on up into Chicago. This is a fine way to savor the recorded evidence, as primary examples from Blind Blake, Charley Patton, Son House, Charlie McCoy, Walter Vincson, Skip James, Ma Rainey, Tampa Red, Kokomo Arnold, Scrapper Blackwell, Leroy Carr, Lonnie Johnson, and Peetie Wheatstraw lead directly to early modern masters like Big Joe Williams, Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Bill Broonzy, Johnny Temple, Leroy Foster, Johnny Shines, Homesick James Williamson, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Snooky Pryor, Little Walter, and David Honeyboy Edwards, among many others. This collection would be greatly enhanced by Edward Komara's The Road to Robert Johnson: The Genesis and Evolution of Blues in the Delta from the Late 1800s Through 1938, a highly regarded work of musicological scholarship published at the same time as J.S.P. released their similarly titled box set in 2007. Careful remastering and affordable pricing make this hefty stash of classic blues an excellent option for anyone who cares at all about where the music came from and how it evolved. - allmusic.com

TISH HINOJOSA - Our Little Planet (2008)

Country has always played a significant role in Tish Hinojosa's musical vocabulary, but usually contemporary folk and Latin influences have displayed a stronger influence in her recorded work. Hinojosa has given her country side more room to move on her album, OUR LITTLE PLANET. While the spare acoustic-based production and arrangements are a far cry from the slick Nash-Vegas product that floods country radio these days, the gentle sway of classic country & western obviously informed the melodies of these songs, even on her Spanish-language duet with Carrie Rodriguez, "Mi Pueblo." Hinojosa's lyrics on these songs reflect the emotional warmth that's long been a cornerstone of her work, but her take on the everyday realities of life and love in tunes like "Tomorrow's Gonna Come," "What Our Hearts Can't Say," and "We Mostly Feel That Way" reveals more of a regular-folks tone than her compositions that dig deeper into life's mysteries. - cduniverse.com

MARION JAMES - Essence (2003)

Marion James has a voice big enough to fill the space in front of any jazz or blues outfit. She can belt ‘em out with the best of them, but the more laid-back songs are equally powerful. Despite her hit “That’s My Man” in the 1950s and the fact that her sidemen have included Jimi Hendrix and Billy Cox (of the Band Of Gypsies), Marion appears to have been a better kept Nashville secret than why people buy Garth Brooks records. In the late 1980s she even hung up her mike but now she’s back and I’m glad. She writes some of her own material and is justifiably confident enough in it to kick off the CD with one of six originals. Beegie Adair and her trio accompany her on six songs which tend to show off both the jazzier end of Marion’s abilities and the elegance of Adair’s accompaniment and solos. The other tracks are electric blues accompanied by musicians who have worked with worked with the likes of Steve Ray Vaughan, Willie Dixon, Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes and the Allman Brothers, a fact which amply demonstrates both the range of her music and the esteem in which she is held by her fellow musicians.

From down-home blues to classic jazz, the album captures a musical moment for every occassion.

SHAUN MURPHY

Shaun found her way to the Blues stage in 1969 at the first Ann Arbor Blues Fest, and was completely smitten. Getting to play at such an important milestone festival must have had her head spinning. That was her awakening to the Blues, and she couldn’t have been among a better line-up: Son House, Muddy Waters, BB King, Freddy King, Lightin’ Hopkins, and the list went on and on…. Solidified into the Detroit music scene, she found her calling, but it was to be a bit illusive, while she continued her music ‘education’ over the years, starting with such notables as; Bob Seger, in ’73 with the Recording of Katmandu, under the pseudonym, Stoney. She worked with Bob and his band, The Borneo Band, along with some of the Silver Bullet boys, Chris Campbell, Alto Reed, and Drew Abbott, and throw in a couple of Tulsa boys, Jamie Oldaker and Dick Sims....shaunmurphyband.com

FLEETWOOD MAC - Original 1, 2, 3 CD Box Set (1996)

Fleetwood Mac were formed in 1967 in London when Peter Green left the British blues band John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Green had replaced guitarist Eric Clapton in the Bluesbreakers, and received critical acclaim for his work on their album A Hard Road. After he had been in the Bluesbreakers for some time, Green asked if drummer Mick Fleetwood could replace Aynsley Dunbar. Green had been in two bands with Fleetwood—"Peter B's Looners" and the subsequent "Shotgun Express" (which featured a young vocalist named Rod Stewart). John Mayall agreed and Fleetwood became a member of the band. The Bluesbreakers now consisted of Green, Fleetwood, John McVie and Mayall. Mayall gave Green free recording time as a gift, in which Fleetwood, McVie and Green recorded five songs. The fifth song was an instrumental which Green named after the rhythm section, "Fleetwood Mac". Green contacted Fleetwood to form a new band. The pair desperately wanted McVie on bass and even named the band 'Fleetwood Mac' as a way to entice him. However McVie opted for steady work with Mayall rather than the unknown of a new band. In the meantime Peter Green and Mick Fleetwood teamed up with talented slide player Jeremy Spencer and bassist Bob Brunning, who was in the band on the understanding that he would leave if and when McVie agreed to join. The Green, Fleetwood, Spencer, Brunning version of the band made its debut on 13 August 1967 at the Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival. Within weeks of this show, John McVie agreed to become the bassist for the band.

Fleetwood Mac's first album, Fleetwood Mac, was a no-frills blues album and was released on the Blue Horizon label in February 1968. In fact there were no other players on the album (except for the song "Long Grey Mare", which was recorded when Bob Brunning was in the band). The album was successful in the UK, hitting no.4, though it did not have any singles on it. The band soon released two singles "Black Magic Woman" (later a big hit for Santana) and "Need Your Love So Bad".

The band's second album, Mr. Wonderful, was released in August 1968. Like the first it was an all-blues album, but this time they made a few changes. The album was recorded live in the studio with miked amplifiers and PA system, rather than pled into the board. This method provided the ideal environment for producing this style of music, and gave it an authentically vintage sound. They also added horns and featured a friend of the band on keyboards, Christine Perfect of Chicken Shack.

Shortly after the release of their second album Fleetwood Mac added guitarist Danny Kirwan, then just eighteen years old, to their line-up. Green had been frustrated that Jeremy Spencer had little desire to contribute to Green's songs. A mature and accomplished self-taught guitarist, Kirwan's signature vibrato and unique style added a new dimension to an already complete band. With Kirwan the band released their first number one single in Europe, "Albatross". Around this time they released their second American album, English Rose, which contained half of Mr. Wonderful, new songs from Kirwan, and their third European album called The Pious Bird of Good Omen, which was a collection of singles, B-sides, and a selection of some work the band did with Eddie Boyd.

ERIC CLAPTON - The Professor Blues Review: Live In Montreux, featuring Otis Rush (1998)

Among budget-line Eric Clapton releases, The Professor Blues Review, Montreux 1986 is unusual as it is not another recycling of early Yardbirds tracks, it instead has a 1986 performance where Clapton, jamming with Otis Rush. Having Rush as a sparring partner spurs some good moments from Clapton -- maybe not enough to make this a must hear, but hearing a mid-80s Clapton lay back and play some blues is enough to make this one of the better budget-line discs from Clapton. - answers.com

HOT TUNA - Live at Sweetwater One & Two (1992/93)

From their days playing together as teenagers to their current acoustic and electric blues, probably no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, the founders and continuing core members of the iconic blues-roots band Hot Tuna. Now members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the pair began playing together while growing up in the Washington D.C. area, where Jack's father was a dentist and Jorma's father a State Department official. While a junior and senior high student, Jack played professional gigs as lead guitarist at night before he was old enough to drive. Jorma, four years older than Jack, started college in Ohio, accompanied his family overseas and then returned to college, this time in California. Along the way, Jorma became enamored of the guitar playing of Rev. Gary Davis and became a master of his finger-picking style. Meanwhile, Jack took an interest in the electric bass--at the time a controversial instrument in blues, jazz, and folk circles....amazon.com

CAROLE KING - The Carnegie Hall Concert 1971 (2011)

Anyone who took the gray-striped kitty on the cover of Tapestry as a totem, from your hip junior-high English teacher to Ben Folds, will recognize the import of Carnegie Hall, recorded the week "It's Too Late" went to No. 1. Mostly solo at the piano, King brought home 10 of that already emblematic album's tunes with a smattering of other numbers. Some of the latter are more callow than absolutely necessary, with "Carry Your Load" way too bouncy and "Snow Queen" too glib. But when she digs out "No Easy Way Down" (immortalized by Dusty Springfield on Dusty in Memphis) and "A Natural Woman," it's a little bit of heaven, even when her voice starts cracking. Actually, her nervousness is charming, though some of her between-song wisecracks fail to wow the very partisan crowd, much less the CD listener a quarter-century later. Guess that's only natural for someone just coming into her own in public after a decade or so behind the curtain, and no one seems to mind much anyway. As the history books tell us, this was a pretty polite rock moment; to further prove it, James Taylor shows up for the encores. Though Tapestry remains the essential item, this one gets by on the grace of King's heart. - amazon.com

ROLAND VAN CAMPENHOUT - Never Enough (2008) thumbup

A Flanders-born blues musician, Roland Van Campenhout was more well known in Belgium as Roland, one of the masters of the genre, as well as a versatile performer who was able to explore other styles such as folk, country, and such with amazing ease for more than 35 years. Originally part of the William & Roland Skiffle Group in the early '60s, Van Campenhout shifted over to folk, backing up the duo of Miek & Roel before going off on his own in 1969. Signed to CBS, Roland issued his first full-length album, A Tune for You, in 1971. While three more albums would follow that decade (One Step at a Time in 1972, 1974's Live, and Movin' On in 1975), it would be his stint as a member of Rory Gallagher's band that would take him all over the world, in addition to offering a platform for the bluesman to hone his skills. He returned to his own career in 1981, releasing the album Snowblind, and in 1985 had his first real commercial hit with the album 76 Centimeters Per Second. He explored rock music in a collaboration with Arno called Charles et les Lulus in the early '90s. An anthology entitled Day by Day, Blow by Blow was released in 1994, and in 1998 Van Campenhout was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at that year's ZAMU Awards ceremony. In addition to working with the aforementioned bands and musicians, Van Campenhout also worked on collaborations with artists such as Marie Leure Béraud, Pieter-Jan de Smet, and the tribute act Spelers & Drinkers. In 2008 Van Campenhout released album number 20, Never Enough, and continued to play shows to highly receptive audiences. - allmusic.com

LOS LONELY BOYS - Rockpango - Deluxe Edition (2011)

When Los Lonely Boys, a trio of very musical brothers, exploded out of the small city of San Angelo, Texas, in 2004 with the hit single “Heaven” from their eponymous debut album, many wondered, “What can they do for an encore?” After all, rare is the band that hits the jackpot first time out: “Heaven” rocketed to Number One on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart, made the Top 20 on the pop charts and won a Grammy; the album sold more than 2 million copies. Their latest studio album—their fourth, not counting a Christmas set and their fine 2009 covers EP, 1969 (on which they covered Santana, The Beatles, The Doors, Tony Joe White and Buddy Holly)—is called Rockpango, and it’s a solid collection of 11 tunes that really shows their maturity as a band. There’s a good dose of heavy rock riffs, with Henry Garza getting a chance to flash his Hendrix/Stevie Ray side on the exciting title cut, while dipping into more of a Clapton bag on the bluesy “Porn Star.” There’s funky clavinet on a couple of tracks, a wonderfully breezy acoustic romp called “Fly Away,” sumptuous ballads accompanied by strings, a strange but cool spoken-sung number called “16 Monkeys” and catchy riffs throughout that recall everyone from The Beatles to Cream, while still hewing to the Los Lonely Boys sound. - mixonline.com

LEDFOOT - The Devils Songbook (2007)

Ledfoot is probably the best solo liveperformer you will ever see. Well known from the legendary band The Havalinas, Ledfoot has developed his own solo style with only his 12 string guitar and foot stomps. But sure - nothing more is needed! LEDFOOT a.k.a. Tim Scott McConnell was born in a trailerpark in Florida 1958. At the age of 15 he started to play biker bars around Florida and moved to New York when he was 17. He played all the underground clubs in NY such as. legendary Cbgb's, Max's Kansas City and Mud club. In 1979 he joined the band The Rockats and signed a deal with Island Records and toured around USA in the next 5 years. The album came out on Island Records in 1981. In 1983 he went solo and signed his first deal with Sire Records where he released "Swear" in 1983. He then signed to Geffen Records where he released "High Lonesome Sound" in 1987. In 1989 he started The Havalinas with Smutty Smiff (Rockats, 13kats) and Chalo Quitana (Cruzados, Bob Dylan, Social Distortion). Since then Tim has done two albums, one with an acoustic swing-jazz concept called MoMacTrio and a solo record released in 1995 titled "13.songs". The last years Tim has developed as a guitarist and his new concept is called Ledfoot. PATTY SMYTH - Greatest Hits (Featuring Scandal) (1998)

When Smyth had her first hit with the band Scandal in 1982 with the peppy kiss-off "Goodbye to You," MTV was still in its infancy and Alanis Morissette was not long out of diapers. Not exactly the stereotypical groundbreaker, the New York-born Smyth nonetheless helped make the pre-Madonna '80s safe for women in rock, paving the way for such hit makers as Morissette, Sheryl Crow, and the whole Lilith Fair flock. While this career-spanning retrospective is a hit-and-miss affair, it boasts plenty of enjoyable, chewy slabs of pop-flavored hard rock. Smyth's top 10 smashes - the anthemic "The Warrior" and the power-ballad duet with Don Henley, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" - are the star attractions, but some of her lesser-known material proves just as impressive. The rousing "Heartache Heard Around the World" is a welcome blast from the (circa 1987) past, and "Wish I Were You," a tune also available on the Armageddon movie soundtrack, shows that Smyth isn't ready to be relegated to the oldies-rock circuit just yet. - amazon.com

NICK SIMPER'S FANDANGO - Slipstreaming + Future Times 1979-80 (1994)

Fandango was formed by ex-Deep Purple (Mark I) member Nick Simper in 1978 after the demise of his former band Warhorse in the mid 70's. The band recorded two albums, Slipstreaming in 1979 and Future Times in 1980 both originally released on a small German label Shark When the debut album Slipstreaming was originally released, the music world was in turmoil. Punk was beginning to rear its ugly head, disco was hot while hard rock was becoming a thing of the past. The band had a hard time finding a U.K. label to release a 70's styled hard rock album so the band went to Germany where hard rock and Nick Simper's reputation was still a viable product. The debut album was released on the Shark label in Germany and finally picked up by Gull in England where it achieved a moderate amount of success. On the basis of the first album's sales another album, Future Times was recorded in 1980 but this one was only released in Germany. With the lack of promotion and low sales on the second album, Fandango decided to call it a day and folded in 1983. This two CD set marks the first time that both of these albums have seen an international release. Besides the two albums in their entirety, this set also contains four bonus selections in the form of rare and unreleased recordings. The CD booklet contains a detailed information on the band and documents the history of both album releases. This set should be of particular interest to any fan of British hard rock and also of interest to Deep Purple collectors. ~ All Music Guide

RORY BLOCK - Shake 'Em On Down - A Tribute To Mississippi Fred McDowell (2011)

Rory Block is the most acclaimed female acoustic blues artist. Her tribute album to Mississippi Fred McDowell is part of a series celebrating the music of her mentors. Her second for Stony Plain, "Shake 'Em On Down" includes covers of a few of Fred's best known songs, a few obscurities and four originals written by Rory. "Shake 'Em On Down" is released in conjunction with her autobiography, "When A Woman Gets The Blues". The twelve tracks contain a few Fred McDowell staples, as well as several original tracks by Block, created in the style and soul of McDowell. The album kicks off with “Steady Freddy”, an original song by Block that tells Fred’s story from what she envisions his perspective was. The second track, “Mississippi Man” fits very comfortably with the first, as Rory tells her story of meeting Fred in Berkley, California. “Shake Em’ On Down” is pure, heavily driven, foot stomping blues, while “Woke Up This Morning” is an unexpected but welcome choir-infused gospel number that builds in conviction and intensity until it stirs your soul. - amazon.com

THE PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND - Original Album Series (2009) [Rhino]

Paul Butterfield (1942 – 1987) was an American blues vocalist and harmonica player, who founded the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the early 1960s and performed at the original Woodstock Festival. He died of drug-related heart failure. Paul Butterfield was the first white harmonica player to develop a style original and powerful enough to place him in the pantheon of true blues greats. It's impossible to overestimate the importance of the doors Butterfield opened: before he came to prominence, white American musicians treated the blues with cautious respect, afraid of coming off as inauthentic. Not only did Butterfield clear the way for white musicians to build upon blues tradition (instead of merely replicating it), but his storming sound was a major catalyst in bringing electric Chicago blues to white audiences who'd previously considered acoustic Delta blues the only really genuine article. His initial recordings from the mid-'60s - featuring the legendary, racially integrated first edition of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band - were eclectic, groundbreaking offerings that fused electric blues with rock & roll, psychedelia, jazz, and even (on the classic East-West) Indian classical music. As members of that band - which included Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop - drifted away, the overall impact of Butterfield's music lessened, even if his amplified harp playing was still beyond reproach. He had largely faded from the scene by the mid-'70s, and fell prey to health problems and drug addiction that sadly claimed his life prematurely. Even so, the enormity of Butterfield's initial impact ensured that his legacy was already secure. -allmusic.com
