SCRAPPY JUD NEWCOMB
Born in Mississippi, "Scrappy" Jud Newcomb got his start in Austin as Stonesian guitarist for relocated roots rockers the Loose Diamonds (1989-1995), fronted by another respected local musician, Troy Campbell. After the band's breakup, Newcomb became one of the capital's most sought-after sideman, settling in for a long, weekly, “hippie hour” residency with local blues chanteuse Toni Price (1992-1999). Producing a succession of critically praised LPs for Beaver Nelson (The Last Hurrah, Little Brother, Undisturbed), as well as Walter Tragert's comeback (Lousy With Desire), he finally made time for to his own solo debut in 2003, Turbinado, on local imprint Freedom Records. Byzantine, considered the superior release, followed two years later. Newcomb can be seen Thursday nights at the Lucky Lounge with (Small) Faces' keyboardist Ian McLagan, and at the Saxon Pub's Sunday night song swaps with the Resentments, both long-running weekly gigs that help lay claim to Austin's status as the live music capital of the world.
