JACKSON BROWNE - Solo Acoustic Vol.1 (2005)

Jackson Browne is an American rock singer-songwriter and musician who has sold in excess of 17 million albums in the United States alone. Coming to prominence in the 1970s, Browne's political interests and personal angst have been central to his career, resulting in popular songs such as "Somebody's Baby", "These Days", "The Pretender", "Lawyers in Love" and "Running On Empty". In 2004, Browne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by his friend Bruce Springsteen. The same year, Browne received an honorary Doctorate of Music from Los Angeles' Occidental College for "a remarkable musical career that has successfully combined an intensely personal artistry with a broader vision of social change and justice".

Culled from the best takes of three years' worth of concerts, Solo Acoustic Vol.1 finds Jackson Browne delivering tender takes from his deep catalog - completely stripped of their Seventies-era excess production. Browne is in fine voice as he digs out tunes like "These Days" (first done by Velvet Underground singer Nico in 1968) and "Lives in the Balance" (a mid-Eighties anti-Reagan diatribe that sounds especially appropriate today). He wraps things up with a threadbare rendition of "The Pretender" that cannot mask the story of a youthful idealist being beaten down by the passing years. Needless to say, Browne's strength has always been songwriting, and Solo Acoustic delivers those songs with no extra baggage.

PETE DROGE - Necktie Second (1994)

Pete Droge is an American alternative/folk rock musician from Bainbridge Island in Washington State's Puget Sound. Pete Droge's debut album, "Necktie Second", finds the singer/songwriter following the footsteps of Tom Petty and Neil Young. At this stage, Droge might not be as melodically sturdy as either of his influences, yet he can turn out a charming piece of roots rock like "If You Don't Love Me (I'll Kill Myself)" without much effort. "If You Don't Love Me" isn't indicative of the rest of the record — throughout Necktie Second, he's hunched over an acoustic guitar, singing sensitive, confessional songs. He's got a more distinct backbeat and a bit more grit than most singer/songwriters, but many ofmore… the songs fail to be really compelling, making "Necktie Second" a promising debut, but not a particularly remarkable one.

ROD STEWART - Some Guys Have All The Luck (2008)

With an estimated 250 million worldwide album and single sales, Rod Stewart arguably possesses one of rock's greatest and most distinctive voices. For many years, he called Warner Bros. home, first as lead singer of the influential band the Faces and later as an internationally successful solo artist. Released November 17th, 2008 (UK) on Warner Bros., "Some Guys Have All The Luck" is a definitive, 32 song collection spanning 1971 to 2004.

Arranged chronologically, Stewart's early solo years are represented by several songs ("Maggie May" "You Wear It Well") from the unforgettable classics, Every Picture Tells A Story (1971) and Never A Dull Moment (1972). The opening disc also includes "Stay With Me," a nod to Stewart's time with the Faces. The second half of the disc shifts to Stewart's Warner Bros. years with the stadium-swooning ballad, "Sailing," the #1 smash "Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright)," the Top 10 hit "You're In My Heart" and "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" from the #1 album Blondes Have More Fun (1978). The second disc concentrates on music Stewart made during the '80s and '90s, including "Infatuation," "Some Guys Have All The Luck," "Love Touch," "Forever Young" and "Motown Song" from the Top Ten album Vagabond Heart (1991). Among the other highlights is a rare studio version of Tom Waits' "Tom Traubert's Blues," as well as a cover of Waits' "Downtown Train" that Stewart took to #1, and "Have I Told You Lately" and "Reason To Believe" - a pair of standout performances recorded for MTV.

JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN - The Deep Field (2011)thumbup

Since assuming her current moniker in 2002 - a reference to the 70's cop show, Joan has toured and collaborated with legendary musicians including Rufus Wainwright and Antony and the Johnsons. She has toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States and has received extraordinary critical acclaim for her three studio albums "Real Life" (2006), "To Survive" (2008) and a compilation of covers aptly titled "Cover" (2009).

Joan As Police Woman (AKA Joan Wasser) - the album's ten tracks were recorded over two sessions with "friend and collaborator" Bryce Goggin and is self-described as her "most open, joyous record" ever. "The deep field is a part of space, a very small part of space, that has many many newer galaxies and I became very enamoured with that idea and that name, The Deep Field. I think it's really beautiful, both cosmically and personally." The new album follow up Wasser's 2008 studio album To Survive, a project that one critic described as "intimate nocturnes located somewhere between classical and soul."

RENEE AUSTIN thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Reneé has known she wanted to be a singer since the age of four, when she first performed the Andre Crouch classic, “Through It All,” as a solo during a service in a tiny, hill country church. “I was too short to reach the podium, so they made me stand on a chair,” laughs Austin. “That was my induction into the musical world.“ By 15, she’d written her first song and — as the numerous church groups traveling through her area gradually inspired her — it became ever more clear that she too wanted to tour, perform and record.

Austin relocated to Minneapolis where her music career began pulling wholly new opportunities together. She was able to assemble a whip-smart band, and in 1997 independently released her debut CD, "Dancin’ With Mr. Blue", which was honored locally as Best Blues Recording by the Minnesota Music Academy (MMA). Soon, Austin was securing opening slots for heavy-hitters Robert Cray, Lonnie Brooks and Delbert McClinton, to name just a few. In fact, Renee specifically rallied with promoters to secure a show with McClinton, and their resulting two-night, two-city bill in March 2003 planted the seed that eventually grew into the duet ballad, “Pretend We Never Met,” on Sweet Talk. Delbert witnessed the band's entire first night performance and was so taken with her voice that he immediately approached her at the foot of the stage after the show. “Girl ? you ring my bell!” he eed. He offered her a prestigious performance spot on his annual Sandy Beaches Cruise in January 2004.

"Sweet Talk" and the critical reaction that followed put Reneé on the map. Downbeat magazine awarded it 3 (?) stars. The blues community took notice by nominating the CD for a W.C. Handy Award for “Best New Artist Debut.” At the Handy Awards Show in Memphis she put on a memorable performance that generated an industry buzz. Another highlight was being invited to the Ground Zero club in Clarksdale, Mississippi to take part in the filming of a PBS-TV production called “Blues Divas.” It was quite an honor, considering the heady line-up of the other singers in the program - Mavis Staples, Ann Peeples, Denise LaSalle, Odetta, Irma Thomas, and Bettye Lavette.

"Right About Love", delivers on the promise of her previous release, reaffirming that her dramatic voice is an instrument that commands respect and knows few boundaries, and that her talent is a force to be reckoned with. Right About Love also continues Austin’s musical journey, mixing blues, roadhouse rock and gospel anchored by her formidable vocal prowess, emotional commitment to every note and evocative spins on time-honored American roots music. Right About Love finds Austin blossoming fully as a vocalist, writer, and co-producer. One standout tune is “Mouth of the Delta,” which she co-wrote with David Grissom, musical director for the Dixie Chicks. Commenting on the CD, Austin said, “I approached writing for this project with the intent of making music that would again take the listener on a ride thru everyday life. When I sat down to create this disc, I wanted to focus in on one thing. Who is Reneé Austin? I came to the conclusion that my Texas roots are the foundation to my music. People ask me all the time ‘What kind of music do you do?’ I tell them Roadhouse Soul - blending Blues/Roots, Country and Gospel/Soul.”

AYNSLEY LISTER - ERJA LYYTINEN - IAN PARKER - Pilgrimage: Mississippi To Memphis (2006)

The concept was breathtaking in its simplicity: take three European artists in thrall to the blues, and send them off to record in Clarkesdale, Mississippi, Memphis, and New Orleans. Unfortunately, that latter destination was never reached; Katrina put an end to that dream, and instead, the bulk of this set was cut in a recovering Mississippi, with a few numbers also recorded in Memphis. In both studios the threesome were joined by a clutch of artists, which may explain the extreme diversity of this album, which swings from Delta blues to much more modern-styled R&B. But this is a Pilgrimage of course, and Brits Aynsley Lister and Ian Parker and Finn Erja Lyytinen seem determined to explore every facet of blues and its descendants. And the styles impact elsewhere, too, as Lister and Parker's own country's twist on R&B and the blues infuse their songs. There are finger-pickin' on the porch numbers like the dreamy "Dreamland Blues," and the foot-tapping "Mississippi Lawnmower Blues" - great title, that - the jammy blues of "Heal Me Love," and the 12-bar blues of "Too Much to Hide" and "Blues Caravan." These all strive toward a purist sound, but with "1010 Degrees" the group join the British Invasion. "Twinkle Toes Willie" splashes into Chuck Berry territory, while "You Don't Know" adds a jazz twist, while "Heal Me Love" takes blues into the indie scene. One can only imagine what the trio would've gotten up to in New Orleans, but even though their pilgrimage was cut short, this must have been one hell of a journey, the results picture postcards from a musical scene long gone, but whose echoes still linger on strongly today. ~ cduniverse.com

ROBYN HITCHCOCK & THE EGYPTIANS - Luminous Groove (2008)

Robyn Rowan Hitchcock is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. While primarily a vocalist and guitarist, he also plays harmonica, piano and bass guitar. Coming to prominence in the late 1970s with The Soft Boys, Hitchcock afterward launched a prolific solo career. Hitchcock's musical and lyrical styles have been influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Syd Barrett. Hitchcock's lyrics tend to include surrealism, comedic elements, characterisations of English eccentrics, and melancholy depictions of everyday life. His themes include the eternal contingencies of existence — namely: death, sex, and eating. (Recognising these themes, he released an EP in 2007 called Sex, Food, Death and Tarantulas.) He was signed to two major American labels (A&M Records, then Warner Brothers) over the course of the 1980s and '90s, but mainstream success has been limited. Still, he has maintained a loyal cult following and has often earned strong critical reviews over a steady stream of album releases and live performances. - wikipedia

BECK, BOGERT & APPICE

Beck, Bogert & Appice was a hard rock supergroup power trio formed by guitarist Jeff Beck after two previous incarnations of The Jeff Beck Group, and bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice who were both previously in Vanilla Fudge and Cactus.

1973 - "Beck, Bogert & Appice"
One of the great things about Jeff Beck is his utter unpredictability. It's also one of the most maddening things about him, too, since it's as likely to lead to flights of genius as it is to weird detours like Beck, Bogert & Appice. It's hard to tell what exactly attracted Beck to the rhythm section of Vanilla Fudge and Cactus -- perhaps he just wanted to rock really loud and really hard, beating Led Zeppelin at their own game. Whatever the motivation, the end result was the same -- a leaden album, with occasional interesting guitar work smothered by heavy riffs and rhythms that don't succeed on a visceral level. It's a loud, lumbering record that may be of interest for Beck archivists, provided they want to hear absolutely everything he did.
TRACKS:
01. Black Cat Woman 02. Lady 03. Oh, Love To You 04. Superstition 05. Sweet Sweet Surrender 06. Why Should I Care About You Now 07. Lose Myself With You 08. Livin' Alone 09. I'm So Proud

1973 - "Beck, Bogert & Appice Live"
The album although initially called Beck, Bogert & Appice Live was only issued in Japan and is also known as Live in Japan. The album is generally considered rare due to the fact of being only released in limited numbers in Japan. Live in Japan was the last released album by Beck, Bogert & Appice and their only live album. Within months of the album's release the band would dissolve after Jeff Beck suddenly decided to leave the band. On this album, Beck can be heard heavily using a Heil Talkbox, two years before the release of Peter Frampton's landmark album, Frampton Comes Alive. The album also contains renditions of songs originally recorded by the Jeff Beck Group, "Plynth", "Going Down," and "Morning Dew" and one Yardbirds number "Jeff's Boogie".
DISC 1:
01. Superstition 02. Lose Myself Without You 03. Jeff’s Boogie 04. Going Down 05. Boogie 06. Morning Dew
DISC 2: 01. Sweet Sweet Surrender 02. Livin’ Alone 03. I’m So Proud 04. Lady 05. Black Cat Moan 06. Why Should I Care 07. Plynth/Shotgun (Medley)

STEVE EARLE - Townes - Deluxe Edition (2009)

In his brief liner sketch on this album of Townes Van Zandt covers, songwriter Steve Earle writes: "I always read everything Townes told me to read. All of us did; we who followed him around, or simply bided our time in places along his migratory path, for we were indeed a cult, in the strictest sense of the word, with Townes at its ever shifting center." While what it was he read isn't worth spoiling here, it's the last part of that long sentence that really matters. Van Zandt inspired a cult, and an even bigger list of pale imitators. Earle may lionize the man and the artist (hence the tribute record), and may have even begun as an imitator, but he became something else entirely - an iconoclastic (and iconic) artist and producer in his own right who can interpret these songs as such. - cduniverse.com

JOHN FAHEY - Return Of The Repressed: The John Fahey Anthology (1994)

The late John Fahey holds a unique place in the history of popular music. In the early 1960s, as the folk boom was turning listeners on to such musical pioneers as Woody Guthrie, Fahey was tuned to Delta blues icon Charley Patton. John Fahey captured both the purity of the blues and its intimations of mortality on 20 albums of instrumental compositions, most for his own Takoma label, and the "American Primitive Guitar" style he created has been enormously influential. The two-CD Return of the Repressed is the first comprehensive collection of this master acoustic guitarist's best work. Spanning nearly 30 years, the 42 tracks on these two CDs are primarily Fahey originals and arrangements of traditional tunes played on solo acoustic guitar. The accompanying booklet was written by Barry Hanson (aka Dr. Demento), a friend of Fahey's since the beginning of his career, making this anthology the definitive look at the fretsman extraordinaire.

"This collection represents nearly 30 years of my recordings with the acoustic guitar, an instrument that I dearly love and continue to play. To my fans new and old, thank you for letting me share my music with you and permitting the return of my repressed subconscious." - John Fahey

MARIA McKEE - Breathe (1994) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Maria McKee is an American singer. A solo artist, McKee was a founding member of the cowpunk/country rock band Lone Justice, in 1982, with whom she released two albums. Her band opened for such acts as U2. In 1986, she wrote Feargal Sharkey's UK number one hit 'A Good Heart'. She released her first solo, self-titled album in 1989. Her song "Show Me Heaven", which appeared on the soundtrack to the film Days of Thunder, was a number one single in the United Kingdom for four weeks in 1990. Later her eerie, country-tinged single, "If Love Is a Red Dress (Hang Me in Rags)" was released on the soundtrack of Pulp Fiction. (1994). Her recorded output has varied between the rootsy country-folk of You Gotta Sin To Get Saved (1993) and Peddlin' Dreams (2005), and experimental rock on Life Is Sweet (1996) and High Dive (2003). She even made a foray into early-90s dance music with her "Sweetest Child" single. Life Is Sweet was seen at the time as an artistic about-face from her country-rock sound, full of guitar feedback and complex, baroque songwriting. Confounding both fans and critics, it was her last release for seven years and her last for a major label. In 2007 she released Late December, an album rooted in classic 60s pop songwriting.

Recorded live on tour 1993.

ROBBIE ROBERTSON - Robbie Robertson (1987)

Robbie Robertson is a Canadian singer-songwriter, and guitarist. He is best known for his membership as the guitarist and primary songwriter within The Band. Lightning does strike twice. Robbie Robertson's breathtaking 1987 solo debut was every bit as remarkable as another debut he'd masterminded two decades before, The Band's Music from Big Pink. Even more impressive was the fact that Robertson's new sound owed so little, other than a shared vision, to the sonic Americana he'd created with The Band. Robertson cashed in The Band's rustic tones in for a lush, beat-box womb created by coproducer Daniel Lanois. His own weird, almost spectral voice, also turned out to be the right vehicle for the words he'd been handing to others for so long. Bono, The BoDeans, and Peter Gabriel join in on keepers like "Fallen Angel" and "Broken Arrow."

The Band singer/songwriter's 1987 solo album debut, unavailable domestically. Guests include The Bodeans, Peter Gabriel, Maria McKee, Ivan Neville, & U2 with production by Daniel Lanois. Includes a 16-page booklet with song lyrics & credits.

TRACKS:
01. Fallen Angel 02. Showdown At Big Sky 03. Broken Arrow 04. Sweet Fire Of Love 05. American Roulette 06. Somewhere Down The Crazy River 07. Hell's Half Acre 08. Sonny Got Caught In The Moonlight 09. Testimony

LONE JUSTICE

The roots rock band Lone Justice was formed in Los Angeles by guitarist Ryan Hedgecock and singer Maria McKee. The half-sister of Bryan MacLean, a member of the seminal psychedelic outfit Love, McKee's involvement in the L.A. club scene dated back to her infancy; at the age of three, she joined MacLean at a performance at the famed Whisky-a-Go-Go and was befriended by Frank Zappa and members of the Doors. As a teen, she studied musical theater, and briefly performed in duos with MacLean and local blues singer Top Jimmy. McKee and Hedgecock first met while dabbling in the L.A. rockabilly scene, and their mutual affection for country music inspired them to found Lone Justice in 1982. Initially, the group was strictly a cover band, but the additions of veteran bassist Marvin Etzioni and Don Heffington, a former drummer in Emmylou Harris' Hot Band, prompted McKee to begin composing original material inspired by Dust Bowl-era balladry. Gradually, elements of rock began creeping into the Lone Justice sound as well, and soon the band became a local favorite.

At the urging of Linda Ronstadt, they were awarded a contract with Geffen Records; their self-titled debut appeared in 1985, followed by a tour in support of U2. Still, despite good press and media hype, Lone Justice failed to sell; slickly produced by the band's manager, Jimmy Iovine, it failed to connect with either country or rock audiences. In the record's wake, Hedgecock, Etzioni, and Heffington all exited the band, leaving McKee to lead Lone Justice alone. After enlisting guitarist Shayne Fontayne, bassist Greg Sutton, drummer Rudy Richman, and keyboardist Bruce Brody, Lone Justice recorded their second LP, Shelter. Shortly after the record's release, McKee broke up the band for good and went on to a solo career. Heffington became a successful session drummer, while Etzioni recorded under the guise Marvin the Mandolin Man. After a decade removed from the music industry, Hedgecock returned in 1996 as half of the duo Parlor James. A posthumous Lone Justice retrospective, This World Is Not My Home, followed in early 1999. - All Music Guide

ERIC BURDON - Absolutely The Best (1999)

"Absolutely The Best" contains newly recorded versions of Eric Burdon & The Animals' greatest hits.

On more than one occasion, Eric Burdon has gone into the studio and re-recorded the hit singles which made him famous in the '60s. This 1998 collection is one of those sets of re-recordings. So if you're looking for the (invariably superior) original versions of classics like "House of the Rising Sun," "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" or "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," be forewarned that you'll have to look elsewhere. That said, Burdon sounds fine here, and the ravages of time have only added more character to his already-raspy voice. The arrangements tend to resist updating, and the playing is perfectly acceptable. Caveat emptor, but this isn't anywhere near as embarrassing as some releases of this nature. - cduniverse.com

THE WHO - Live At Leeds: 40th Anniversary Ultimate Collectors' Edition (2010)

One of the most critically acclaimed concert albums in rock history, from one of the greatest live bands of all time, just got even better, with the revelatory rediscovery of the recording of the following night's performance. The Who's Live At Leeds - 40th Anniversary Super-Deluxe Collectors' Edition (MCA/UMe), released November 16, 2010, brings together not only the iconic band's concert of February 14, 1970 in Leeds but also the following night's previously unreleased concert in Hull, each with an entire performance of the "Tommy" rock opera. Hailed by Nik Cohn in his 1970 album review in The New York Times as "the best live rock album ever made," Live At Leeds has since been ranked by Rolling Stone among its "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time." Yet the original idea was for The Who's first live album to be a compilation of the best performances from the Leeds show and the February 15th concert in Hull. The band members reportedly preferred the Hull recordings over those at Leeds because of the better acoustics of the more spacious venue. But supposedly there were technical problems, notably that the bass guitar had not been recorded on some songs. Recently, however, an associate of the band returned to the vaults to listen to the Hull recordings and was surprised to discover that the set was wholly intact: band, bass and audience! Because of the belief that those recordings had not been complete, the album had become Live At Leeds. Yet as now heard for the first time on Live At Leeds - 40th Anniversary Collectors' Edition, the Hull show was equally incendiary. - amazon.com

RORY GALLAGHER - Meeting With The G-Man+ (2003)

Meeting with the G-Man+ is the RCA CD reissue of a live 1993 date in which the late Irish blues-rocker Rory Gallagher, late in his life, tore down the house in front of a large, completely unhinged, and adoring crowd. The beauty of this date is simply that Gallagher was still writing and recording new material and showcasing it on tour; he refused to be complacent and go the route of many of the guitar heroes of his generation by simply doing live shows comprised of hits. Therefore, much of the material here was new at the time, though a few classics are tossed in as well: killer versions of "Messin' with the Kid," "Ghost Blues," and "Mean Disposition." The 2003 CD reissue includes a complete remastering job, and includes no less than six previously unreleased acoustic performances placed in the center of the album -- the order they took in the set list -- almost doubling its length. While the recording itself is raw and immediate, it is never less than full-on in spectrum, making for an unusually high-quality, raucous gig that captured the guitarist at full power. Highly recommended.

Live collection from the late, great bluesman recorded at the Paradiso in Amsterdam on 12-20-1993. 'Meeting With The G-Man' is an expanded version of this 'bootleg' gig that was previously only available in the 2001 box-set 'Let's Go To Work' & features 14 tracks including 6 extra tracks, 'She Moved Through The Fair', 'Out On The Western Plain', 'William Of Green', 'Mercy River', 'Walking Blues' & Don't Think Twice It's Alright'. - cduniverse.com

01. Continental OP 02. Moonchild 03. Mean Dispositon 04. The Loop (featuring Resurrection Shuffle & Jailhouse Rock) 05. Don't Start Me Talkin' (featuring Revolution) 06. She Moved Through The Fair 07. Out On The Western Plain 08. William Of Green 09. Mercy River 10. Walking Blues 11. Don't Think Twice It's Alright 12. Ghost Blues 13. Messin' With The Kid 14. La Bamba

V.A. - Atlantic Rhythm And Blues 1947-1974 (1991)

This eight-CD set should be a part of any collection that presumes to take American music - not just rock & roll or rhythm & blues - seriously. Atlantic Records was one of dozens of independent labels started up after the war by neophyte executives and producers, but it was different from most of the others in that the guys who ran it were honest and genuinely loved music. Coupled with a lot of luck and some good judgment, the results trace a good chunk of the history of American music and popular culture. Disc one opens with cuts which slot in somewhere midway between jazz, bop, and "race" music (as the term was used then). Disc two is pure, distilled R&B, the stuff filling the airwaves of black radio and the jukeboxes in the "wrong" parts of town in 1952-54. Surprisingly, the material on Disc three, covering 1955-57, isn't very different in content or character from Disc two, despite the fact that it covers the period when white teenagers were starting to listen to and buy these records in large numbers. It's only with Disc four that one sees the consequences of the late '50s -- Ray Charles in his final days with the label, juxtaposed with the Drifters in their post-1958 incarnation and the start of the company's relationship with Stax/Volt Records. Disc six (1965-67) is practically a mini-tribute to Stax/Volt, filled with the best-known sides of Eddie Floyd, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Booker T. & the MG's. Discs seven and eight run from the late '60s and the heyday of Aretha Franklin to some great early-'70s soul, including Roberta Flack and the Spinners. The booklet, with a full sessionography and biographical notes on each artist, would be worth 20 bucks on its own. - cduniverse.com

MINDY SMITH - One Moment More (2004)

After appearing on the Dolly Parton tribute album "Just Because I'm A Woman,” many people wanted to know who Mindy Smith was. Fortunately, Mindy was signed to Vanguard Records with "One Moment More" being the result. Containing 11 self-written gems and a reprise of the song "Jolene" from the tribute album, "One Moment More" is poised to be one of 2004's best releases. Featuring a glorious voice that recalls the better parts of Lee Ann Womack, Alison Krauss and Patty Griffin, Mindy is truly original. As emotional as they are poetic, Mindy Smith's songs hook in the listener and will have them humming and singing along in short order. The rootsy sound of Mindy is hard to pigeonhole and for that she may not get much airplay on country radio but for those genres that do accept Mindy, (most likely the Americana and Adult Alternative formats) they will get to play great songs like "Come To Jesus," "Falling," the heart-wrenching "Raggedy Ann" and "Hard To Know." All of these songs could be great country songs if some of that genre's big stars were to get their paws on them. The two best songs on the album are the tough "Fighting For It All" and a song that is Taylor-made for Alison Krauss, "Train Song."

With 12 great songs, Mindy Smith's expertly produced "One Moment More" is the first exciting release of 2004. There have been many hyped and critical darlings throughout time, but Mindy Smith is one of the rare artists who exceed any expectations that have been laid out for her.

LORI CARSON - Where It Goes (1995)

Lori Carson's second solo album is the real start of her solo career - 1990's SHELTER is an over-produced misfire which Carson doesn't discuss much - and it follows naturally from her exceptional work with the Golden Palominos, even to the extent that Palominos bandleader Anton Fier produced it. A somber but never dour record, WHERE IT GOES features some exquisite melodies and marvelous, though largely downcast, lyrics. Carson's beautiful voice, less overtly sexy than on the Palominos' records, but still with an erotic undertone, is front and center on all 10 songs. A melancholy tone runs throughout the record, reaching an emotional climax with the searing "Fell Into the Loneliness." Happily, the album's two most optimistic songs, "Anyway" and "Christmas," close things on a more cheerful note. WHERE IT GOES is an exceptional record. - cduniverse.com

TRACKS:
01. Down Here 02. Waking to the Dream of You 03. You Won't Fall 04. Petal 05. Twisting My Words 06. Where It Goes 07. Through the Cracks 08. Fell into the Loneliness 09. Anyday 10. Christmas

CHUCK BERRY - Johnny B. Goode: His Complete '50s Chess Recordings (2007)

Chuck Berry's legendary breakthrough 1950s Chess recordings has gotten their first thorough presentation anywhere via a 4-CD, 103-song box set on Chess/Hip-O Select Records. These are the groundbreaking recordings by the first poet laureate of rock a?™na?™ roll that set the tone lyrically and musically for all that came after. To paraphrase John Lennon, if they didn't call it rock'n'roll, they'd call it Chuck Berry music, and this remarkable new set shows why. Digitally remastered from the original Chess masters, the collection features not only such oft-covered classics as “Maybellene,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Rock And Roll Music,” “Memphis,” “Sweet Little Sixteen,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Carol,” and “Little Queenie,” but it also shows the evolution of the artist and his songs, while presenting a surfeit of rarities, including 16 previously unreleased tracks. With the exception of two live recordings, all of these tracks were recorded at Chess Studios from May 21, 1955, through a massive late July 1959 session, which culminated in the only time Berry played session lead guitar for an artist other than himself: two tracks by a studio group called the Ecuadors. Other rarities on the set, aside from the unreleased tracks, include a pair of live versions of “Maybellene” and “Roll Over Beethoven” Chuck recorded for Alan Freed's 1956 New York “Camel Rock'n'Roll Dance Party” album, several original masters overdubbed for the fake On Stage Chess album, and a number of recordings making their U.S. CD debut.

CHUCK BERRY - You Never Can Tell: His Complete Chess Recordings 1960-1966 (2009)

Unlike his fellow original rock & rollers like Elvis, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis from the Class of '56, Chuck Berry remained quite vibrant in the '60s and even recorded some of his best songs: "You Never Can Tell," "No Particular Place To Go", and "Nadine" in the decade of Beatlemania. Including all of these classics and more, YOU NEVER CAN TELL: THE COMPLETE CHESS RECORDINGS 1960-1966 thoroughly covers this era over four discs and 108 tracks, 18 of which were previously unreleased. Capturing many different sides of the rock-&-roll giant, including his blues phase, great instrumental versions of favorites like "Brown Eyed Handsome Man," and 45 minutes of a 1963 live show in Michigan, the box is a must-own for serious Berry devotees and an in-depth rendering of one of the greats in his last essential era. - cduniverse.com

CHUCK BERRY - Have Mercy: His Complete Chess Recordings 1969-1974 (2010)

Fulfilling Phil Chess's prophecy, Chuck Berry returned to Chess Records in 1969 after a three year stay with Mercury Records. And it was like he never left, as his very first session produced a great two-sided single, "Tulane" b/w "Have Mercy Judge." The record didn't chart, but it was obvious that Chuck was truly "back home" (as his first album back on Chess was called) and already producing high quality "Chess" recordings once again. This third and last 4 CD set of Chuck Berry's Chess recordings collects every available master and alternate from "Tulane" till the label shuttered its doors to recording new music. The 71 tracks here include his only #1 ("My Ding-A-Ling (live)"), plus 22 previously unreleased recordings, ranging from cool in-studio jams/instrumentals ("Turn On The House Lights," "Rockin'") to 4 additional live recordings from the smoking concert that produced the live side of The London Chuck Berry Sessions; from an intimate, small group session in October of 1972 which produced two throwback "Chuck blues" tracks, "Blues #1" and "Annie Lou," to Chuck's renditions of "Jambalaya" and "Dust My Broom." There's also a live version of "South Of The Border" only previously released as a "B" side in the U.K. and the hot concert London Sessions per formance of "Roll `Em Pete," also originally only released in edited form as a "B" side with a different rhythm section dubbed in - this set has both the complete original and single versions. As with the two earlier volumes, Have Mercy includes liner notes by Berry biographer (and the set's co-compiler) Fred Rothwell, great period photos and graphics, as well as complete sessionby - session credits. - amazon.com

ERIC CLAPTON - Clapton Chronicles: The Best Of Eric Clapton (1999)
[2007 Korean Tour Limited Edition]

If this were your first exposure to Eric Clapton, a bit of bewilderment would be in order. This is the legendary guitar icon? This is (as his early apostles once proclaimed) God? Ranging from the mid-'80s through the late '90s, The Clapton Chronicles owes less to the groundbreaking blues-rock of Clapton's '60s and '70s classics than to the polished-to-a-glare pop of Phil Collins, who produced one of the tracks included in this 14-song anthology. His reinterpretation of his greatest recording--the once-gripping, now-placid "Layla"--perhaps best illustrates Clapton at middle-age: Who wants to bask in his darkest period? Not Clapton, who converts his surging, purging charge into a soothing stroll. And perhaps not fans of such docile MOR fare as "My Father's Eyes," "Tears in Heaven," and the two new tracks, "Blue Eyes Blue" and "Get Lost."

"Clapton Chronicles" (2007 Korean issue Limited Tour Edition) 2-disc set comprised of a 16-track CD album featuring a collection of hits originally released in 1999 including BONUS recording 'Hard Times' plus 'Special Bonus Selection' CD including 6 songs recorded between 1989 & 2005 plus a further 7 tracks captured live at the Royal Albert Hall in 1990

DISC 1:
01. Blue Eyes Blue 02. Change The World 03. My Father's Eyes 04. Tears In Heaven 05. Layla 06. Pretending 07. Bad Love 08. Before You Accuse Me (Take A Look At Yourself) 09. It's In The Way That You Use It 10. Forever Man 11. Running On Faith (Unpled) 12. She's Waiting 13. River Of Tears 14. (I) Get Lost 15. Wonderful Tonight (Live) 16. Hard Times (Bonus track)

DISC 2: 01. Say What You Will 02. I Ain't Gonna Stand For It 03. So Tired 04. Back Home 05. If I Had Possession Over Judgement 06. Old Love 07. Bell Bottom Blues (Live) 08. Badge (Live) 09. V.A. - What's Shakin' (1966)

When the Lovin' Spoonful formed in 1965, Elektra staff producer Paul Rothschild bankrolled a demo session, but lost out to the newly-formed Kama Sutra Records in the ensuing bidding, largely because Elektra, then still strictly a folk label, couldn't break AM radio. Elektra kept the demos, and released them in 1966 as the centerpiece of the various-artists sampler WHAT'S SHAKIN'. The Spoonful's four tracks are a little more rough-edged and rock-oriented than the pop-folk singles that made them stars, with only the self-explanatory "Good Time Music" maintaining their characteristic sunny feel. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band contributes five stellar non-LP tracks and backs Al Kooper on a funky new version of the Blues Project's "Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes." For British blues fans, the otherwise unrecorded Powerhouse, starring Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, and Jack Bruce, adds three of its own, including Clapton's first recording of his signature tune "Crossroads". Clapton's band is especially interesting....It's a treat to hear 'Crossroads' before Cream got hold of it. - cduniverse.com

Elektra (2005, Collector's Choice Music) released What’s Shakin’ in 1966 - a smoking, various-artists foretaste of breakthroughs to come. Ultra-rare tracks by the Lovin’ Spoonful rub shoulders with searing numbers by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Eric Clapton (wtih Steve Winwood), the Blues Project’s Al Kooper, and fabled Boston folkie Tom Rush.

OHIO EXPRESS - Golden Classics (1994)

Together since high school, the Ohio Express were the ultimate bubblegum band. Their lead singer,Joey Levine , sang like he had a huge wad of bubblegum in his mouth. His super nasal vocals are a bubblegum trademark. The band played tense go-go grooves with chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug guitars & roller rink keyboards. Compared to most bubblegum bands, the Ohio Express were HEAVY. Their biggest hit, "Yummy Yummy Yummy" is the foundation of power pop. It's opening riff has been borrowed by everyone from the Cars to Judas Priest. During their 1968 - 69 heyday, the group put out several albums and a ton of singles for BUDDAH RECORDS including "Sweeter Than Sugar", "Mercy" and "Down at Lu-Lu's". Kasenetz, Katz and Levine kept sticking together hit after hit for the Express as its membership constantly mutated. In fact, the band pictured here were not the original band that recorded the first Express single, "Beg Borrow and Steal". The "OHIO EXPRESS" album is particularly interesting. The album features just two Levine/Super K - produced songs. The rest of the album is filled out with the band's own material which ranges from bubblegummy pop to freakout psychedelic space-rock. Of course, the real fun can be found in the 45s. While "Chewy Chewy" and "Mercy" continue in the "Yummy Yummy" vein, B-sides like the backwards instrumental "Zig-Zag", and the super-funky-soulful "Roll It Up" sest that too much bubblegum may lead to drug use! Other weirdness occours on the single "Peanuts" (say it a few times fast and you'll get the idea). The Ohio Express still play today & can be booked thru the Mars Talent Agency. They even have a new single out called "Goody Goody"! The new singer sounds a lot like Joey & the original Express guitarist, Douglass Grassel also plays with the group on special occasions. - unclebuzz.com

DEEP PURPLE - The Friends And Relatives Album (1999)

This ambitious anthology chronicles the life of hard rock Deep Purple and its many offshoots, predecessors, and legacies, from well-known acts such as Whitesnake, Rainbow, and Dio to lesser known groups like Trapeze. The 26 track collection also includes hits by the original act including the signature song "Smoke On The Water." An entertaining, if rather puzzling, sort of concept album, DEEP PURPLE FAMILY is mostly written and sung by Eddie Hardin, the man who had the unenviable task of replacing Stevie Winwood in the old Spencer Davis Group, and later formed the prog-rock duo Hardin & York. Hardin has assembled an impressive, if grizzled, group of Brit Rock names here--various members of Deep Purple, Manfred Mann, and the Dave Clark Fives--to help him perform this lengthy song cycle. Musically, it's a pleasant ride; most of Hardin's songs sound like laid-back, '70s L.A. studio pop, although Maggie Bell (England's answer to Janis Joplin back in the day) raises the energy level considerably on her two songs, and the Chris Barber Band makes some nice retro jazz noises on parts one and two of "Swanks and Swells."

1999 release, a 'family tree' album with cuts by Deep Purple, solo cuts by members of the band, including Glenn Hughes, Ian Gillan, Bernie Marsden & David Coverdale, plus bands with Deep Purple members, including Rainbow, Trapeze, E.L.F. & War Horse. 26 tracks in all. CHRISTY McWILSON thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

After nearly two decades as a singer in various Seattle-area pop and roots rock bands, Christy McWilson finally released her solo debut, The Lucky One, in 2000. McWilson first recorded in the early '80s as one-third of the girl group pastiche the Dynette Set, who released a few singles and compilation tracks in the first half of the decade, including "Seed of Love," a standout on the 1984 Rhino female-focused new wave compilation The Girls Can't Help It. That song was co-written and produced by Scott McCaughey of the Young Fresh Fellows, who later became McWilson's husband.

After the demise of the Dynette Set, McWilson played around Seattle in various short-lived groups while adding backing vocals to various Young Fresh Fellows albums (the Fellows' college radio hit "Amy Grant" particularly benefited from McWilson's sassy vocals). In 1990, McWilson helped form the Picketts, who released three albums - Paper Doll, The Wicked Picketts, and Euphonium -- over the course of the '90s. As the Picketts disbanded, more out of sloth than acrimony, longtime fan Dave Alvin approached McWilson with an offer to produce her first solo album, made up of her originals (many concerning her lifelong strle with a bipolar disorder) and a heartfelt, lovely cover of Brian Wilson's "Til I Die." The album, The Lucky One, was recorded with a core band that included Alvin, Peter Buck, and Rob Shea on guitars; Bob Glaub and Walter Singleman on bass; and Don Heffington on drums. It also features guest appearances by Syd Straw, the Old 97s' Rhett Miller, and R.E.M.'s Mike Mills. Two years later, she called on many of the same musicians to help her put together her second solo album, Bed of Roses.

2000 - The Lucky One
This disc sure may catch a listener off guard with its wonderful songwriting (ten of 11 are written by Christy McWilson) and hard hitting instrumental work. You may have never heard of McWilson before, nor heard any buzz about her. But one first listen of the CD, you will put the disc in your changer and instantly be impacted by the country sounding "The Lucky One," which startles with it's beautiful clear soaring voice and a subtle rocking beat. This is followed by the relentless "Little Red Hen," with pounding drum work of Don Heffington relentlessly pushing it along. The disc continues to surprise and delight with its changing rhythms, the solid and tight band closely following the leads of McWilson's plaintive voice that reflects the emotion of the lyrics. This is an excellent band that stays with her with every twist; Rick Shea does his usual outstanding job on a variety of instruments, as do Peter Buck and Greg Leisz. The accordion work of Chris Gaffney adds a subtle undercurrent to the sound. Then congratulations must go to Dave Alvin and the production work he did here, keeping the whole lot vibrant and alive. You will certainly look forward to a lot more from this roots rocker. - allmusic.com
TRACKS:
01. The Lucky One 02. Little Red Hen 03. Ship Song 04. Someday 05. Weight of the World 06. Wishin' 07. 'Til I Die 08. Apple Doll 09. Today Is Yesterday's Tomorrow 10. Eloda 11. Fly Away 12. Cryin' Out Loud

2002 - Bed Of Roses
Christy McWilson's second solo album employs the same producer (labelmate Dave Alvin) and musicians as its predecessor. It also displays the same strengths and weaknesses. On the plus side, she has a strong and polished voice, redolent of artists like Linda Ronstadt and Highway 101's Paulette Carlson. At her best, such as on the accordion-spiced "The Serpentine River," her lyrics and melodies can be quite compelling. But McWilson blazes no new trails; there's little about her delivery, style, or material to set her apart from the crowd. The strongest tracks here are the two well-chosen covers - Jesse Colin Young's "Darkness, Darkness" and Moby Grape's achingly sad "8:05," which is performed as a duet with the deep-voiced Alvin. The rest is spirited and likable, but also a bit too reminiscent of other mainstream country-rock acts. - allmusic.com
TRACKS:
01. Life's Little Enormities 02. Lila Jean 03. The Serpentine River 04. True Believer 05. 8:05 06. Shooting Fish In A Barrel 07. Darkness, Darkness 08. Sheep Song 09. Bed Of Roses 10. Not A Day Goes By 11. Can't Stop A Train 12. Tightrope

WHISKEYTOWN - Faithless Street (1998)

Much has been made of Whiskeytown's turbulent, short-lived life and the antics and attitude of its lead singer and songwriter Ryan Adams. But all that falls by the wayside with one listen to the alt-country youngsters' 1996 debut "Faithless Street". Though its antecedents are easy enough to trace (Uncle Tupelo, anyone?), "Faithless Street" updates the classic country-rock sound with enough grit and sincerity to make it fresh and vital. In part this vitality comes from Adams's punk rock background: there is enough muscle and DIY attitude here to spawn any number of front-porch alt-country wannabes. But the real weapon is Adams' songwriting, be it the spiraling melancholy of opener "Midway Park," the waltz-time beauty of the title track, or the serious country perfection of "Matrimony." The musicians--with their weeping pedal steel, steady backbeats, and fierce electric guitars (not to mention Caitlin Cary's fine violin and vocals), are no slouches either. "Faithless Street" deserves a place alongside seminal alt-country albums by Uncle Tupelo and the Jayhawks, which is high praise indeed.

Originally released on Moodfood Records, this remixed reissue contains new artwork and bonus tracks.

YES - In A Word: Yes (1969 - ) - Rhino Box Set (2002)

Like the prog-rock movement that spawned them, the band name Yes was only supposed to be temporary. But Yes have long outlived prog, spanning five decades, some 14 members, and, at one point, essentially two separate outfits on opposite sides of the Atlantic. This five-disc box set chronicles the musical high points of one of the most successful, if unlikely, careers in all of rock. While contemporaries like ELP and King Crimson often distilled their jazz, classical, or avant-garde influences into potent, often jagged sonic shards, Yes thrived by infusing influences as diverse as Stravinsky, Lennon and McCartney, traditional jazz, the Fifth Dimension, and Paul Simon with their own restless, endlessly ambitious musicianship, then letting them simmer into musical landscapes often as vast as they were lyrically impenetrable. All the band's early staples are here ("Yours Is No Disgrace," "Starship Trooper," "I've Seen All Good People," "Roundabout") along with intact swatches of the epics Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans and Relayer. But the later chapters are equally rewarding: the improbable 1980 replacement of departed Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman by the Bles' Trevor Horn and Geoff Downs on Drama; the return of Anderson (with Horn and and new guitarist Trevor Rabin sharing producer's duties) for the surprising, megaplatinum success of 90125 and its chart-topping "Owner of a Lonely Heart"; rewarding, diverse '90s outings like Talk and The Ladder. It's a compelling musical vision that's almost utopian, sprinkled with a half-dozen previously unreleased tracks and the epic 1972 reworking of Paul Simon's "America." Chris Welch and Bill Martin's comprehensive and insightful notes are introduced by film director and longtime Yes fan Cameron Crowe, who reminisces about his early days writing about the band. - amazon.com

In a Word: Yes (1969 - ) is a five CD box set by progressive rock band Yes encompassing their entire career from its inception in 1969 to 2001, including material from the 1989 Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe album. It was released in 2002. The sonically improved and more expansive successor to 1991's Yesyears, In a Word: Yes (1969 - ) marked the beginning of Yes's association with Rhino Records, who would remaster and reissue the band's core Atlantic Records catalogue throughout 2003 and 2004 - while adding many of Yesyears previously unreleased performances as bonus tracks on the individual newly remastered CDs. The booklet contains essays by Chris Welch and Bill Martin, as well as forewords from Rush bassist Geddy Lee and Phish drummer Jon Fishman. - wikipedia

CHERI KNIGHT - The Knitter (1996) & The Northeast Kingdom (1998) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Cheri Knight made her initial foray into music as the bassist for the alternative bluegrass unit the Blood Oranges. After the band's breakup, she moved from Massachusetts to New York, where she met up with musicians Eric Ambel and Will Rigby, who aided her in recording her 1996 solo debut, The Knitter. The acclaimed Northeast Kingdom followed in early 1998.

1996 - The Knitter
Mandolinist Jimmy Ryan may have been the driving force behind the Blood Oranges, but bassist Cheri Knight's strong, earthy voice and beautifully melancholic songs marked many of that band's finest moments. On "The Knitter," she takes a confident and much-deserved step into the foreground (she even plays guitar this time around). The songs are an organic mix of strong-willed power chords, country-driven rhythms, and rural acoustic ballads, and the lyrics ring with vivid images of loneliness, anger, emotional confusion, and moments of undeniable love. Cheri Knight is the real deal, and The Knitter is a solid and promising debut.

1998 - The Northeast Kingdom
Former Blood Orange Cheri Knight has hit her highest marks with Northeast Kingdom. The mix of rootsy rock and folky textures gives Knight's tunes an upfront urgency and a surrounding sponginess that quickly draws listeners into these pithy dramas. Roomy production from the TwangTrust (Steve Earle and Ray Kennedy) allows Knight's heavyhearted lyrics to unfurl with a full range of colors, putting Northeast Kingdom leaps ahead of many 1998 releases. Cheri Knight's singing voice is deceptively simple: there's a straightforward soulfulness to her, even though she never seems to do anything fancy with it. The Northeast Kingdom, the second solo effort from this former Blood Orange, is all over the map stylistically--there's an Irish air, a jangly pop number, a honky-tonk shuffle, even something of a southern rocker--but it's that haunting voice that makes everything here feel of a piece. Of course, the swinging, Steve Earle-produced arrangements and Knight's beautiful, impressionistic songs of love and betrayal (like the emotionally risky "Crawling") don't hurt either. - amazon.com

TOMMY EMMANUEL - Little by Little (2010)

Tommy Emmanuel, four-time winner of Australia's Best Guitarist award, has helped bring the art of rock guitar down under to a higher awareness over his two-decade-long career by bringing a sense of jazz improvisation into a mix that also includes blues, country, rock, classical, and Spanish music. After years as a popular sideman and ace songwriter, the two-time ARIA (Aussie Grammys equivalent) award winner launched his solo career in 1988 with Up from Down Under. Several releases have followed, most notably his critically acclaimed 1993 release The Journey, which hit high on Gavin and Radio & Records NAC airplay charts. He has shown a mastery and affinity for both electric and acoustic axes and has been singled out by the likes of notable musicians such as Chet Atkins, with whom he recorded The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World in 1997, and Todd Rundgren as being an innovator on the instrument. Only appeared in 2001, followed by 2002's Endless Road (it was finally released in the U.S. three years later), 2005's Live One, and 2006's Happy Hour (with Jim Nichols) and Mystery. - allmusic.com

ALLISON MOORER - Show (2003)
thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Allison Moorer's studio albums often seem like private rooms of desire, places where the lonely meet for secret intimacies too deep for words or the mere act of sex. However, on this live CD, recorded in a Nashville club in early 2003, the flame-haired singer-songwriter brings everything out into the open. In reprising such favorites as "Alabama Song" and "A Soft Place to Fall," she edges her alto beyond lush chanteuse levels to find her considerable rock and blues chops. "Maybe that'll be my first hit single," she cracks after the well-received and hard-charging "I'll Break Before I Bend." Sister Shelby Lynne drops by for three engaging duets, including the blistering "Going Down" and a gospel prayer to their slain mother ("Is Heaven Good Enough For You"). A more surprising guest is Kid Rock ("Bully Jones"), who spoils the blood-and-danger mood with his drunken party vibe. Why he's here at all is a mystery because Moorer's a mesmerizing Show all her own. - amazon.com

PAVLOV'S DOG - The Adventures Of Echo & Boo And Assorted Small Tails (2010)

20 years after their last studio album, and 35 years after the classic "Pampered Menial", the formerly highest signed newcomer-band of all time, Pavlov's Dog, present their 5th album, "Echo & Boo". Again it is David Surkamp's singular, by now sophisticated voice, that brands the album so uniquely. Once you find the access to the music of Pavlov's Dog, it will capture you and never let you go. As soon as Surkamp starts singing, accompanied by affecting violin melodies, "Echo & Boo" gives one the creeps immediately. In a most distinctive way Pavlov's Dog are beautiful, emotional, betimes gentle, betimes rocking... but always simply Pavlov's Dog! - amazon.com

GRAND FUNK (RAILROAD) - We're An American Band (1973) [2002 Digital Remaster]

We're An American Band is Grand Funk Railroad's seventh studio album, and was released in July 1973 by Capitol Records. It was produced by Todd Rundgren. This is the first album to feature Craig Frost as a full-fledged band member. The original issue was on a translucent yellow disk. The label, above the side numbers, instructed listeners to play "at full volume." It included four stickers (two blue, and two red) with the Grand Funk "Pointing Finger" logo. Emphasizing the shortening of the group's name, largely for legal reasons, the word "Railroad" does not appear anywhere on the album sleeve, liner, or vinyl record.

The album itself spawned two singles; the #1 title cut, and "Walk Like a Man", which peaked at #19 in 1974. The album is #200 of the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) [Definitive 200] albums of all time. - wikipedia

This initial best-of package, "Canned Heat Cookbook", was released rather quickly in 1969 after the band's initial burst of creativity resulted in four albums and two hit singles between 1967 and 1968. Friend/manager/producer Skip Taylor lists tons of the band's engagements from 1966 on the gatefold of the album, which constitutes its only liner notes. Dozens and dozens of gigs, from the Monterey International Pop Festival to Club 47, the Boston Tea Party, and what they call the Woodstock Pop Festival, are all listed and this is a staggering resumé suited well to a greatest-hits package. For those who want to get a good glimpse of this band, "Canned Heat Cookbook" is the place to start. - allmusic.com

TRES CHICAS

Tres Chicas are an alternative country group from Raleigh, North Carolina. The members of Tres Chicas first began singing together in 1999; their first performance was an impromptu singalong at an Alejandro Escovedo show in a Raleigh bar. The name was bestowed upon them by the owner of the bar after the performance. They occasionally performed live, and recorded some of their material more for historical interest than with the intent of releasing it. Producer Chris Stamey heard the tapes and asked the group to release a full album; the result was their 2004 debut for Yep Roc, "Sweetwater". The group toured the U.S. and Europe in 2005. Their second album was recorded in London with producers Neil Brockbank and Robert Trehern; Yep Roc released it in March 2006.

ALISON KRAUSS + UNION STATION - Live (2002) thumbupthumbupthumbup

This two-CD, 25-song set, recorded in Louisville on two nights in the spring of 2002, finds bluegrass's most celebrated crossover band at the top of its game. Krauss's warm, feathery vocals, capable of conveying complex emotions in a single note, appear more full-bodied than in studio recordings, yet lose none of their sensual appeal or dramatic tension. She's perfect, for example, as the melancholy temptress on "Let Me Touch You for Awhile," coming across as both savior and seductress, while Jerry Douglas's Dobro echoes the searing strains of passion and pain. With banjoist-guitarist Ron Block, bassist Barry Bales, and guest drummer Larry Atamanuik anchoring the rhythm, the ensemble deftly blends bluegrass with jazz, rock, and folk, combining lightning speed (though rushing through "Forget About It") with sophisticated chops, tangible emotion, and thrilling vocal blends. The crowd, more spellbound with every note, doesn't even breathe on "Ghost in This House" and nearly tears the place down on Dan Tyminski's voice-of-George Clooney showcase, "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow." But who could blame them? It's only one highlight on an album of uncommon artistry, a moving testament to how good live music can be in the hands of world-class players. - amazon.com

CALEXICO & IRON AND WINE - In The Reins (2005) thumbupthumbupthumbup

In the Reins features Sam Beam of Iron & Wine and Calexico aiming to combine the best of each of their musical strengths, a collaboration that was discussed by both bands for years but never came together until now. The CD unfolds with Beam's evocative melodies backed by Calexico's blend of mariachi horns, soaring strident pedal steel, and jangly '60s-era reverb guitars; there's even the contribution of Salvador Duran's operatic Flamenco vocals on the first track, "He Lays in Reins," to really flesh out the Western feel. Given the EP's title, images of being tied or controlled come to mind especially on "Dead Man's Will," a track that features a nice peppering of vibraphones to round things out at the end. "Red Dust" is reminiscent of the roustabout feel on Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's recent collaboration with Matt Sweeny on Superwolf. Here is a song that begins quietly and opens into a ballsy, four-on-the-floor honky tonk. On "Burn That Broken Bed" muted trumpets linger in space and the blended band is cautious with dynamics like a seasoned jazz quartet. As a first EP together (though it seems unlikely their last), Calexico and Iron & Wine seem almost tentative. It would be interesting to see Beam nudge the sweet introverted songs he's mastered from the bedroom into Calexico's full-on cinematic marquee limelight - something there is great potential for with this exciting grouping. - amazon.com

JOHN CARTER CASH - The Family Secret (2010)

John Carter Cash is an American Country music-singer, author, songwriter and producer. In case you don't know, John Carter Cash is the son of Johnny Cash and June Carter. He has more than his share of country and folk Grammys for his production work on his father's and mother's albums, and while you couldn't imagine a finer country music pedigree, you'd better look elsewhere if you're expecting this to be a traditional country album. On The Family Secret, pop music predominates with side trips into metal and dark cabaret balladry. The title track, "The Family Secret," has nothing to do with his dad's tribulations. It's a hard rocker about the son of a wolfman, delivered by a rip-snortin' two-guitar, bass, and drums rock band. "Uncle Sam Is Dead" is a slow metallic protest ballad that features Tony Narell on the big Hammond B-3 and screaming lead guitar supporting Carter Cash's growling vocal. A cover of Loudon Wainwright's "Swimming Song" sounds like a contemporary country track combining pop/rock, banjo, and an insouciant vocal. "No One Here Gets Out of Here Alive" takes its title from a paraphrase of a Jim Morrison lyric. It's not a rocker, but a country-pop meditation on mortality with Narell's B-3 providing the expected sanctified feel. Country done Carter Cash style shines through on "If God Made Anything Better Than a Woman," a sentimental honky tonk tune featuring soulful pedal steel, and "Unforgettable Dance," a soaring ode to true love that features a Carter Cash vocal marked by understated passion. The album closes with a hidden track, a cover of Blue Öyster Cult's "Godzilla" presented as a piano lounge ballad. It doesn't quite work, but it shows off Carter Cash's inclination to take risks. Carter Cash isn't the singer his father was, but his gruff vocals carry a force of personality that makes his singing compelling, and with his ability to turn in credible songs in a multitude of styles, he seems destined for a long, varied career. - allmusic.com

JEFF BECK - Jeff Beck With The Jan Hammer Group Live (1977)

Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group Live is a live album by Jeff Beck, released in 1977 on Epic Records. On the strength of such classic releases as BLOW BY BLOW and WIRED, Beck toured worldwide with super-keyboardist Jan Hammer and his backing band. For fans of technically demanding playing with a lot of "feel," "Jeff Beck With The Jan Hammer Band Live" from 1977 captures the legendary guitarist at his in-concert apex. Beck had a perfect foil in Hammer, as the two musicians try to outdo one another by trading fluid lines back and forth. Several then-recent Beck tracks prove to be highlights-the opening "Freeway Jam," where Beck and Hammer make their respective instruments sound like car horns and automobiles whizzing by, the lyrical "She's a Woman," "Scatterbrain," and a show-stopping, album-closing rendition of "Blue Wind." - cduniverse.com

V.A. - Harvest Festival (1999)

Harvest Festival is a genuinely comprehensive and thorough look at the one British major label venture into psychedelia and progressive rock that actually worked, commercially and artistically; it's a panoramic journey though a major part of British rock as it developed over a period of just under a decade. Over the five CDs and 97 songs, more than two dozen acts are featured, ranging from purely English phenomena like Michael Chapman, Quatermass, and Pete Brown to mega-arena acts like Pink Floyd, and the set comes complete with a built-in 120-page book that would be worth 35 dollars by itself. Beginning with the Edgar Broughton Band's Jimi Hendrix meets the Crazy World of Arthur Brown track "Evil," the programming goes a long way to explaining why Harvest worked while other attempts at forming psychedelic and progressive labels in England failed -- in contrast to the slick, commercial psychedelic ventures at rival Deram Records, Harvest always gave its artists the freedom to be louder (or softer) than the norm, and to be bold in their expressions. Moreover, the diversity of form was astonishing, from the acoustic instrumental chamber music rock of the Third Ear Band, to the lively acoustic psychedelia of Syd Barrett and Kevin Ayers, to the high-energy attack of Deep Purple, Quatermass, and Bakerloo - it all sounds amazingly strong, well crafted, and exciting. Harvest had room for jugband music, traditional acoustic folk, progressive folk-rock, spoken word, and, full-circle commercially from Harvest's late-'60s origins, psychedelic Beatles-influenced commercial rock by way of ELO. Harvest also grew to embrace sounds that would have been inconceivable for EMI to have signed when they started, including Be-Bop Deluxe (versions 1 and 2), Bill Nelson's Red Noise, the reggae outfit Matumbi, the Shirts with Annie Golden, and the punk band Wire. It's all fascinating stuff, told in great detail in the accompanying book, but ultimately, a set like this stands or falls on the music. The archivists have dug deeply enough to find material that makes Barrett's output look tame and conventional, specifically Tea & Symphony, whose "Maybe My Mind (With Egg)" is a truly dissonant and strange journey into thought processes bent by the prism of drugs and meditation. Not everything on this set will be to everyone's liking, but anyone inclined to enjoy Pink Floyd or Syd Barrett's solo stuff will be entranced by most of the content. The sound has been treated first-class, with new state-of-the-art 1999 remasterings. The other measure of success of this box is that there's a huge amount of material here that leaves the listener wanting more from a lot of the acts featured. - allmusic.com

SUE FOLEY & PETER KARP - He Said She Said (2010)

For twenty years, Sue Foley has been proving that, despite the stereotypes, Canadian women can play the blues as well as anybody. She has released nine albums as a leader, and established herself as one of the most important singer, songwriter, and guitarist in the blues field. Peter Karp has shifted careers several times over his life, but for the last six years, he's been garnering raves as a singer/songwriter with blues and folk roots. A couple years or so ago, Foley and Karp began a correspondence which turned into songwriting inspiration, as they eventually developed a song cycle charting the ups and downs and dual perspectives on a single relationship between a man and a woman. There's anticipation, wonder, sex, miscommunication, regret, delight, hope, fear, sadness, and joy documented in these songs, which comprise the duo's excellent release, He Said She Said. - blues.about.com

CHRIS DUARTE GROUP - Infinite Energy (2010)

Chris Duarte Group continues to improve and refine it's craft with each successive release , the new CD "Infinite Energy" will buildexpectations of their loyal fan base as they consistently delivers some of the best work in the context of high energy blues rock. This CD contains moments that bring to mind legendary artists as diverse as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Johnson. Whatever progressions the Chris Duarte Group make on their 2010 release Infinite Energy are a matter of depth, not breadth. The group doesn't try anything new, Duarte still specializes in a distinctly Texas brand of the blues, one that has Stevie Ray Vaughan as ground zero, where even the Hendrix-isms are filtered through SRV, but they do manage to lock into a soulful groove on "My Heart Don't Want to Let You Go" and creates a noir-streaked moodiness on the instrumental "Hamra St" quite unlike anything he's done before. Elsewhere, the sound remains the same and if the production is way too clean for Duarte's increasingly rough, wobbly vocals, his guitar sounds hot and full, speaking with a warmth he can not manage, nor needs to create, as a singer. amazon.com, cduniverse.com

RY COODER - Geronimo - An American Legend: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1993)

Director Walter Hill hired Ry Cooder to do the score for a movie he describes on the back cover as "a drama about two cultures," and Cooder (with such cronies as David Lindley and R. Carlos Nakai) has delivered an appropriate mixture of sounds identifiably based in Native American music and in nineteenth century American folk music - music for the campfires of both camps, as it were. Cooder is steeped in such styles, and the result is effective, if not one of his more independent scores. - answers.com

GREGG ALLMAN - Low Country Blues (2011)

Gregg Allman's first solo album in 14 years was produced by T Bone Burnett and features 11 covers of songs from legendary bluesmen Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, B.B. King, Bobby Bland, Sleepy John Estes, and many more, PLUS an original song written by Gregg and the Allman Brothers' Warren Haynes called "Just Another Rider." Gregg's backing band on the album includes Dr. John on piano, Doyle Bramhall II on guitar, and the incomparable rhythm section of bassist Dennis Crouch and drummer Jay Bellerose (from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss's multiple Grammy-winning `Raising Sand' album).

Like any genuine bluesman, Allman’s own life has been colored by myriad triumphs and too many tragedies. Low Country Blues was initially slated for a mid-2010 release, but that plan changed when Gregg, who had long battled chronic Hepatitis C, was notified that he was a candidate for a liver transplant. In June 2010, he entered the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida where he successfully underwent the difficult surgery. Knowing that he had only just made one of the defining albums of his recorded career proved to be the best medicine, giving Allman the inner strength he needed to fully heal. An inveterate road warrior, Allman is understandably itching to return to the endless highway. He spent the months following the surgery hitting both the gym and the rehearsal studio, working hard to restore his vitality to its requisite level. Moreover, Allman is justifiably proud of Low Country Blues and is eager to get out there to bring these songs to his countless fans.

V.A. - Cave Of Clear Light: The Pye And Dawn Records Underground Trip 1967-1975 (2010)

That is, deliver a comprehensive, beautifully packaged three-disc extravaganza complete with extensively detailed booklet. Once again compiled by Mark Powell, behind both the Polydor and Harvest excursions, Cave of Clear Light shines the fiery torch on the label that’s been dismissed as a poor relation to the more dedicated exponents of the psychedelic and progressive sound. Unfairly so, one might add, as Pye/Dawn had an impressive roster of artists on the books, even if the vast majority never so much as tickled the public conscious. Obviously, that’s the style of output HFoS thrives on.

Disc 1 boils down the psychedelic and the folk into one easily consumable portion. The one dud aside (Neo Maya’s ‘UFO’), this starter notches up such classics as the sinister Status Quo number ‘Paradise Flats’, The Mooche’s ‘Hot Smoke and Sassafras’, Blonde on Blonde’s ‘All Day, All Night’ and, obviously, ‘Cave of Clear Light’ by The Bystanders.

Disc 2 sets its stall out early on, with ‘Tell You a Story’, another track from Fire, once again taken from their sole, but justifiably much sought after concept album The Magic Shoemaker. From then on in we’re treated to a mixture of heavy prog, acid-folk and, once again, The Status Quo.

Disc 3 is a progressive paradise, resplendent in flutes, extended solos and such rarities as Gravy Train and Jonesy. Even blue-eyed soul barker, Chris Farlowe, makes an appearance on ‘Can’t Find a Reason’, while pastoral folk bods Heron deliver ‘Yellow Roses’ from their self-titled debut.

Cave of Clear Light is yet another superior compilation for lovers of the psychedelic and the progressive to sink their teeth into. So long as labels such as Esoteric keep putting stuff like this out, there’s no reason this sometimes under-tapped vein should ever run dry.

NINA SIMONE - To Be Free: The Nina Simone Story (2008)

Nina Simone was one of those controversial figures American pop music puts forward from time to time, with the notable exception that she started her controversy earlier in the 1960s than, say, Bob Dylan. To see this African-American woman get angry about the racial situation in her country, right there on stage, was a shock to people who'd come to hear her sing "I Loves You, Porgy." Not that she cared; she figured that it was the artist's job to deliver the truth, and if the truth hurt, so be it. Of course, events wound up proving her right, but she never stopped being prickly about one thing or another. It was just part of who she was, and part of why her music has endured while that of some of her contemporaries has faded: she's still contemporary.

To Be Free: The Nina Simone Story is a 3 CD Career Retrospective (1957-1993) including her work for Bethlehem, Colpix, Philips, RCA, CTI and Elektra, PLUS a DVD featuring the 1970 Emmy-nominated never-before-released documentary. This package includes 54 songs, 8 previously unreleased tracks, including some never recorded elsewhere. The box includes all chart hits (U.S. and U.K.) and her most famous signature songs. An added bonus are liner notes which include track-by-track commentary from Simone biographer, David Nathan, and introduction by Ed Ward, NPR's "rock & roll historian", and never-before-seen photos from her family archives, recording sessions and performances. - amazon.com

DAVE EDMUNDS - Pled In (1994) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Returning to the one-man band approach of his early records, Dave Edmunds crafted a fine comeback with Pled In. Though his method is similar in execution to Subtle As a Flying Mallet, the impact is different, primarily because he has stripped away much of his Spector-ian pop influences and sticks to a menu of ready-made roots-rockers. Alternating between covers and originals, the song selection is solid, even if only a handful of songs stand out. Among the highlights is an exciting version of Jerry Reed's instrumental "The Claw," a sweet cover of Al Anderson's "Better Word for Love," and the sunny pop of "Beach Boy Blood (In My Veins)." While the studied, solitary performance on Pled In can be a little stiff, it's songs like these that make the album his best record in years. Still, "Sabre Dance '94" was entirely unnecessary.

Home alone with his trusty '58 Gibson Dot Blonde guitar and '53 Fender Twin amp, Edmund remakes a few favorite 45s, drenches some new tunes in echo, and generally has a blast while again playing the Welshman in Memphis. This strong comeback features sterling covers of songs by Otis Redding, Jerry Reed and NRBQ's Al Anderson, plus an album-oriented rock gem in the Billy Gibbons-penned "One Step Back."

TRACKS:
01. Chutes & Ladders 02. One Step Back 03. I Love Music 04. Halfway Down 05. Beach Boy Blood (In My Veins) 06. The Claw 07. I Got The Will 08. Better Word For Love 09. Standing At The Crossroads 10. It Doesn't Really Matter 11. Sabre Dance '94

TERRY & THE PIRATES - The Doubtful Handshake (1980) [Digitally Remastered 2010] thumbupthumbupthumbup

Out of the mist and fog of the San Francisco bay emerged an amazing band that for 26 years treated the Bay Area to some of the best music to ever emanate from out of every nook and cranny of every bar and night club around. There was a spirit of adventure to their music, sort of pioneering spirit that had permeated the San Francisco Bay Area music scene at that time, especially in Marin County in the early 1970's. Now nobody embodied this feeling more than artists like Terry Dolan, John Cipollina, Greg Douglas, David Hayes, and Jeff Myer. They were original, crazy, cowboy "Rock'n-Rollers" better known to the world over as Terry & The Pirates. To many, including Terry, feel that "The Doubtful Handshake" is his best studio album to date and to make this version special we found some rare photos for the booklet, and included two cool bonus tracks to make it more alluring and exciting as well. Moreover Greg Douglass wrote a great introduction and the band members along with their producer extraordinaire reflect on their days thirty years ago on the making of "The Doubtful Handshaek", not to mention playing in Terry & The Pirates. Terry & The Pirates and Made In Germany Music hope you will enjoy this new edition of "The Doubtful Handshake". - MIG Music

GERRY RAFFERTY - The Collection (2007)

Baker Street singer Gerry Rafferty has died at the age of 63. Rafferty, who is also best known for his 1972 hit Stuck In The Middle With You with his band Stealer's Wheel, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, said daughter Martha this morning. The Scottish-born singer had been admitted to hospital in Bournemouth last November with liver failure. Rafferty started his career in a school band called the Mavericks, before working with comedian Billy Connolly and his folk band The Humblebums. He then released a solo album in 1971 before founding Stealer's Wheel the following year. While Stealer's Wheel enjoyed huge success with tracks such as Stuck In The Middle With You and Star, the group disbanded in 1975, leaving Rafferty free to pursue his solo career. It was in 1978 that Rafferty wrote Baker Street, the track that was recognised last October for having been played a staggering five million times worldwife. But despite his professional life going from strength to strength, Rafferty sadly suffered from alcoholism, leading to the breakdown of his 20-year marriage to wife Carla in 1990. Referring to their split, Carla said at the time:'There was no hope. I would never have left him if there had been a glimmer of a chance of him recovering. Stuck In The Middle With You gained a new lease of life after Quentin Tarantino included it in the soundtrack of his 1992 film Reservoir Dogs. But as rumours began to spread about Rafferty's health when news of his drinking problem became public, Rafferty's epresentatives were forced to release a statement in 2009 insisting he was healthy.Later that year Rafferty released what was to become his last album, Life Goes On. Rafferty is survived by his brother Jim, daughter Martha and granddaughter Celia. - dailymail.co.uk

CROSS CANADIAN RAGWEED - Back To Tulsa: Live And Loud At Cain's Ballroom (2006)

Cross Canadian Ragweed was an American Red Dirt/Country rock band. The name of the band came from the combination of three band members' names, Grady Cross (guitar), Cody Canada (guitar, vocals), and Randy Ragsdale (drums). Jeremy Plato's (bass) name was not involved in the band naming. Despite rumors of preceding bassist contributing to the band name, Jeremy Plato was a founding member of the band, according to Cody Canada. The band name alludes to Cody Canada's surname and to Canadian County, Oklahoma (where the town of Yukon is located): none of the members are, in fact, of literal Canadian origin.

Cross Canadian Ragweed have always made the live stage their stock in trade as evidenced by their glut of recently released live albums - "Back To Tulsa: Live And Loud At Cain's Ballroom" being their third in five years. The title holds true as the band knocks out blisteringly loud Lone Star alt-country throughout the two-disc set with brief pauses for breath, such as a faithful rendition of Neil Young's "Needle and the Damage Done." Much of the material comes from their previous studio efforts "Soul Gravy and Garage", and fans of these outings will not be disappointed by their live readings. - cduniverse.com

COOKIE McGEE - One Way Ticket (2010)

A live set from the shamefully under-recorded Queen of Texas blues, captured in her home town of Dallas. Cookie grew up neighbours with Freddie King's children and at one time spent five years playing with the Freddie King Jr band. A left-hander, she plays the guitar "upside down and wrong way round" but that hasn't stopped her producing the blistering old school guitar breaks which mark her performances. Her career has been intermittent but as the South West blues magazine noted back in 1998 she is "..one of those Dallas-Fort Worth blues people who will pop up from time to time, seemingly from nowhere, and just shock the heck out of you". Lucky Peterson guests on organ, adding extra impetus to a tight, grooving backing band.

TRACKS: 01. Cookin' With Cookie 02. Back Playing The Blues 03. I Can't Take It 04. The Right Place 05. One Way Ticket 06. I'm Tored Down - Take 1 07. Woke Up This Morning 08. One Thing Or Another 09. Palace Of The King 10. I'm Tored Down - Take 2

RYAN ADAMS & THE CARDINALS - Cardinals III / IV (2010)

Recorded during the 2007 sessions that produced Easy Tiger but shelved until 2010 for no particular reason, the double-album III/IV shares much of the relaxed, unhurried vibe of that tight 2007 LP but there is a key difference: this is a straight-up rock & roll album, the first Ryan Adams has released with the Cardinals. No country touches III/IV, not even of the Deadhead variety: Adams is in his alt-rocker mode, so much so that he even dabbles in textures borrowed from the Killers, who were at the height of their prominence back in 2007. Despite these lingering new wave affectations, the roots of this record lie in the left-of-the-dial sounds of the late `80s. Adams touches upon rainy-day English rock and atmospheric anthems custom-made for arenas, but his touchstone remains American rock, specifically the Replacements. He's never as reckless as the Mats at their peak -- hell, he's never as reckless as he was on Rock n Roll, but he's not as desperate to prove his greatness as he was on that 2003 mess either. And that's the charm of III/IV and of Adams in general since he's gotten sober: he's not trying so hard. Songs still spill out of him as if he can't control it, but he no longer sounds as if he ranks his merit by sheer numbers -- he's just enjoying the process, and who could blame him when he's back with a band as sympathetic to his needs as the Cardinals? As adept with this set of alt-rock as they were with country-rock, they play into Adams' newfound relaxed assurance, which is in some ways better heard on III/IV than it was on Easy Tiger simply because he sustains interests over two discs, never peaking yet never lagging either. - cduniverse.com

02.01.2011.

At the beginning of the year I really must say that in the last few months I had a great help and support from German friend. I know that he does not need publicity, but anyway I have to say here: "THANK YOU H!" If you saw the first time (on web) on this blog some box sets or cd collections you must know that these are his lossless rips for me - actually for all of us...

I would also thank the anonymous friends who sent me Rapids. Now I have a much easier way to music..And what happened with my Rapids? Someone else uses them, long story, probably a young guy, a hacker and I'm glad that did not manage anything with my bank accounts. At my request accounts has been blocked, and that is why I could not buy Rapids.

Have a nice day, month, year...

ANGELA STREHLI - "Deja Blue (1998)" & "Blue Highway (2005)"

Husky-voiced blues and soul singer Angela Strehli has often been called the "First Lady of Texas Blues." Indeed, her contributions both on and off stage have done much to propel the Austin blues scene toward international prominence. Whether recording with such friends as Marcia Ball, Lou Ann Barton, Sue Foley, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, or helping mastermind policies behind the success of Antone's—the legendary Austin blues club—she has performed with unerring taste and verve. For a major modern blues figure, the sultry blonde has not recorded prolifically, preferring to treat each album as a special event. However, the albums she has chosen to share with the public are remarkably entertaining and expressive slices of gut-bucket blues revival and scintillating uptown soul. - answers.com

1998 - Deja Blue
Don't let her lack of albums fool you: vocalist Angela Strehli is an immensely gifted singer and songwriter, a Texas blues historian, impresario and fan. Raised in Lubbock and inspired by the mix of blues, country and rock & roll she heard on West Texas early-'60s radio, she learned harmonica and played bass before becoming a full-time vocalist. Despite the fact that her recordings are scant, Strehli spends a good portion of each year performing live shows in Europe and around the U.S. and Canada. You can hear Strehli, who's now based in San Francisco, in all her glory on Soul Shake (1987, Antone's Records), Dreams Come True, with Lou Ann Barton and Marcia Ball (Antone's, 1990) and Blonde and Blue (1993, Rounder Records). Of these, Blonde and Blue seems to best showcase her talents as a vocalist and writer of quality songs. Strehli, an avid student of the blues and a sharp blues historican, also helped build the Austin blues scene with club-owner Clifford Antone and musicians like Kim Wilson and the Vaughan brothers; she resurfaced in 1998 with Deja Blue. - allmusic.com
TRACKS:
01. Cut You Loose 02. A Stand By Your Woman Man 03. Deja Blue 04. A Man I Can Love 05. Boogie Like You Wanna 06. Give Me Love 07. Still A Fool 08. Close Together 09. Hey, Miss Tonya 10. Too Late 11. Where The Sun Never Goes Down

2005 - Blue Highway
Singer/songwriter Angela Strehli has been a fixture on the Austin blues scene for decades now, but as her first studio album in seven years demonstrates, her range extends beyond the blues and well into country, soul, and roots rock. At 60 years old, her voice is strong and slightly gritty around the edges, and her delivery is powerful and authoritative. She manages to take material like the Ann Peebles classic "Slipped, Tripped and Fell in Love" and Ernie K-Doe's "Hello My Lover" and make it all her own (though she has help on the latter from singer Paul Thorn), and her originals are mostly quite good as well. (Her tribute to the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, titled "SRV," is sweet but maybe just a bit on the overly sentimental side.) Fellow blueswomen Marcia Ball and Maria Muldaur join her on the rollicking title song. But the album's finest moment comes at the very end; the last track is a live version of the old blues song "C.O.D.," performed by Strehli with Vaughan and his band, Double Trouble, at Carnegie Hall in 1985. The combination of her powerful voice and his blockbusting guitar is amazing. - cduniverese.com
TRACKS:
01. Austin's Home of the Blues 02. Blue Highway 03. Hello My Lover 04. SRV 05. Slipped, Tripped and Fell in Love 06. I Don't Know Why 07. Lord, Don't Move the Mountain 08. Headed South 09. Always Love You 10. C.O.D.

Wilson Pickett was a force of nature, a one-man hurricane that blew everything out of his path. As he sang in one of his many Top 40 R&B singles, he was A Man and a Half, a title so fitting it served as a summary for Rhino's 1993 double-disc compilation, a collection that stood as the most exhaustive Pickett retrospective until Rhino Handmade unleashed the six-disc box Funky Midnight Mover: The Atlantic Recordings (1962-1978), a monumental testament to the sweatiest, grittiest, soul singer who ever grabbed a microphone. This set may not be billed as the "complete recordings", but it is effectively that, rounding up all the master takes Pickett cut for Atlantic during those 16 years, dipping back for a few sides by his early group the Falcons, skipping his three-year sojourn at RCA from 1972-1975, adding some rarities, but essentially serving up all his prime titles in a handsome, hardcover book. Subtlety wasn't quite Pickett's strong suit, but that isn't a liability: no matter what song came his way, he never sounded anything less than committed, and in the case of his disco dabblings of the late `70s, it could be some real dregs indeed. As this set illustrates, Pickett was game to follow the shifting sands of fashion, singing blaxploitation funk at the beginning of the `70s and glitzy disco at the end of it, singing it with the same fire he had when he was at Muscle Shoals in the late `60s, where he cut such timeless sides as "In the Midnight Hour," "Knock on Wood," "634-5789 (Soulsville USA)," "Mustang Sally," and "Funky Broadway." These singles naturally form the foundation of Funky Midnight Mover, but that is to be expected, as they're always the core of any Pickett collection -- what the box proves is the magnitude of his talent and the consistency of his prime. Dig deeper than the `60s hits and there's a wealth of great music - pure, uncut Southern soul that's sometimes adventurous, like when Wilson flirted with rock & roll on covers of "Hey Joe" and "Hey Jude"- but what impresses is how Pickett remains a dynamic force even when the quality of the songs dips, as it undeniably does in his second stint at Atlantic. Despite this limp ending, the box never feels weak, it's always strong and soulful, a necessary monument to a talent with no parallel in his time or in any other. ~ cduniverse.com
