SAM & DAVE - The Definitive Soul Collection [Rhino Digitallly Remastered] (2006)

Sam & Dave were an American soul and rhythm and blues duo who performed together from 1961 through 1981. The tenor (higher) voice was Samuel David Moore and the baritone/tenor voice was Dave Prater. Nicknamed "Double Dynamite", "The Sultans of Sweat", and "The Dynamic Duo" for their sweaty, gritty, gospel-infused performances, Sam & Dave were one of the greatest live acts of the 1960s. They were an influence on many future musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, Al Green, Tom Petty, Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello, Teddy Pendergrass, Billy Joel and Stevie Winwood. The Blues Brothers, who helped create a resurgence of popularity for soul, R&B, and blues in the 1980s, were influenced by Sam & Dave - their biggest hit was a cover of "Soul Man", and their act and stage show had many similarities to the duo. Sam & Dave are members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and are Grammy Award and multiple gold record award winning artists. According to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Sam & Dave were the most successful soul duo, and brought the sounds of the black gospel church to pop music with their call-and-response records. - wikipedia

ERIC CLAPTON - From The Cradle To The Fillmore West (1995)

Excellent soundboard recording of Eric's return to the historic Fillmore in San Francisco during his 1994 "From The Cradle" blues tour. Clapton had not played at the Fillmore since the days of Cream. This is the first night of his three night stand (Nov 7-8-9, 1994).

Sourced from the pro-shot video that was used for tracking purposes in the filming of Nothing But the Blues. This tweaked and remastered release is sourced from a low generation copy of this video, and is a notable improvement on Blues From the Heart.

Highly recommended.

Other musicians:
Andy Fairweather-Low (guitar), Dave Bronze (bass), Andy Newmark (drums), Jerry Portnoy (harmonica), Chris Stainton (keyboards), Simon Clarke (sax), Tim Sanders (sax), Roddy Lorimer (trumpet).

V.A. - And This Is Maxwell Street: Volume One - Three (2000)

On Sunday mornings at Chicago's famous Maxwell Street open-air market, busking bluesmen would battle with hawkers, preachers, and dancers for coveted space. In 1964 filmmaker Mike Shea chronicled this bubbling scene for his landmark documentary And This is Free; in the process, he preserved stunning examples of raw, informal, gritty, undeniably urban blues, the best of which is included on these two revelatory CDs. Amazingly, legendary figures like Robert Nighthawk and Carey Bell were as likely to show up as any number of local gospel singers and blues pickers. Nighthawk's tenacious saw-toothed guitar work and Bell's swooping harp are well documented here, as is the work of lesser-known Chicago players like Johnny Young and Big John Wrencher. However, in this setting, the songs of obscure players like Arvella Gray, who performed solo with a Dobro, and the James Brewer gospel singers seem nearly as important. Rooster Blues's superb package includes incredibly detailed annotation, which does an admirable job in trying to sort out the correct players and songwriters, and crisp remastering-two things that the unauthorized Rounder single-disc issue lacks--plus a bonus third disc featuring young Mike Bloomfield's interview with Nighthawk. Like field recordings are to country blues, these street recordings are much more than mere music - they are compelling historical documents. - amazon.com

SADE - The Best of Sade (1994) [Remastered 2000]

By the time this was released in 1994, something unexpected happened. Sade's early work became classic and the later additions boasted even better vocals and songs that nicely improved on the theme. The timeless sound and class always exhibited makes Sade Adu and her band a no-brainer for an appealing compilation. Like Al Green's Greatest Hits, The Best of Sade doesn't detract from the original albums and is a marker of time, not the end of the act. The ice-princess demeanor and detached vocals worked perfectly for the mid-'80s singles and radio samples "Smooth Operator" and "Your Love Is King." The tracks from the make-or-break second album, Promise, seem less dolorous propped up and sequenced for a compilation. The sensual-to-a-fault "The Sweetest Taboo" and "Never As Good As the First Time" both retain their strength here. The songs from Stronger Than Pride - "Love Is Stronger Than Pride," "Nothing Can Come Between Us," and the great "Paradise" - all benefit from Ian Cooper's mastering job. This set also includes tracks from Sade's "comeback" CD, Love Deluxe, including "Kiss of Life" and "No Ordinary Love." As a bonus, The Best of Sade also includes a rare cover of "Please Send Me Someone to Love" from the Philadelphia soundtrack. Despite its riches, The Best of Sade doesn't include all of the best, since "Maureen" and or "Keep Looking" aren't here. It's a small complaint and The Best of Sade is a great overview. - answers.com

"The Best of Sade" was released in the United Kingdom on 12 November 1994 and in the United States on 26 November 1994 by Epic Records. The retrospective was digitally remastered in 2000.

CLIFF RICHARD - The Whole Story: His Greatest Hits (2000)

Sir Cliff Richard is an English singer, musician, performer, actor, entrepreneur and philanthropist, who has sold over 260 million records worldwide. Not quite the whole story, but with over 100 U.K. hit singles to choose from, no mere two-CD package could ever hope to tell that tale. Across 46 tracks, however, The Whole Story does hit every necessary highlight and, if Cliff Richard's career can be summed up by his Top Five hits alone, then this set is a more practical lesson than any of the anthologies that likewise claim to document his five decades of success. From "Move It" to "The Millennium Prayer," all of Richard's most memorable numbers are included here, in sharp chronological order and so smoothly arranged that, although the 1960s do take the lion's share of the track listing, the decades that followed get a fair look in as well. There are no surprises here, and no inclusions (or omissions) that you can really argue with. Quite simply, it's the perfect one-stop for anybody who wants a solid selection of Richard's biggest smashes.

The Day I Met Marie 21. Power To All Our Friends 22. Miss You Nights 23. Devil Woman 24. My Kinda Life 25. We Don't Talk Anymore 26. Carrie 27. Dreamin'

JOHN MARTYN - One "Live" & One Compilation

John Martyn (11 September 1948 – 29 January 2009), born Iain David McGeachy, was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Over a forty-year career he released twenty studio albums, working with artists such as Eric Clapton and David Gilmour. He has been described by The Times as "an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues".

1976 - "Live At Leeds"
This 1975 live album captures singer-songwriter John Martyn at his peak. Martyn emerged as part of Britain's traditional folk scene, but as the 1970s wore on he became increasingly experimental with his sound, dabbling in jazzy structures and creating expansive guitar-scapes with a host of effects. This concert features Martyn performing with bassist Danny Thompson, and the rapport between the two is fluid and kinetic. The duo, freed up by the live setting, stretch the song "Outside In" to almost 20 minutes, and lend a fierce, near-psychedelic propulsion to Skip James's "I'd Rather Be the Devil." Martyn sounds as good here as he does on his studio albums, making"Live At Leeds" a fine example of his compelling art.
TRACKS:
01. Outside In 02. Solid Air 03. Make No Mistake 04. Bless The Weather 05. The Man In The Station 06. I´d Rather Be The Devil
Personnel includes: - John Martyn - Paul Kossoff (guitar) - Danny Thompson (bass) - John Stevens (drums).

1992 - "Couldn't Love You More"
Released in 1992 "Couldn't Love You More" consisted of re-recorded versions of classic tracks with guest appearances including Phil Collins, David Gilmour and Gerry Conway. Permanent asked for John's permission to release this album whilst John and Jim Tullio were working on the "No Little Boy" album. "Couldn't Love You More" is in fact the session tapes for "No Little Boy". John refused permission, but Permanent released the album anyway! John and Jim Tullio were furious. The mixes were clean, sweet and sometimes dull and boring. There is no sign of the spontaniety that John still craves today. Saxaphone is overpowering in places and the backing vocals make the album super smooth - not the John Martyn sound that fans know and love. The songs are 'John Martyn', but the 'sound' is not. The album that John wanted to release was No Little Boy which was released in 1993.
"This album could, quite safely, be considered The Best of John Martyn", read Permanent Records press release. John disagreed, as did most of his established fan base.
TRACKS:
01. Lonely Love 02. Couldn't Love You More 03. Sweet Little Mystery 04. Head and Heart 05. Could've Been Me 06. One Day Without You 07. Over the Hill 08. Fine Lines 09. May You Never 10. One World 11. Way's To Cry 12. Angeline 13. Man in the Station 14. Solid Air 15. Never Let Me Go

TEENA MARIE - The Best Of Teena Marie (1996)

Mary Christine Brockert (1956 – 2010), better known by her stage name Teena Marie, was an American singer, songwriter and producer. No white artist has sung R&B more convincingly than Teena Marie, whose big, robust vocals are so black-sounding that when she was starting out, some listeners wondered if she was a light-skinned African-American. Marie grew up in west Los Angeles in a neighborhood that was nicknamed "Venice Harlem" because of its heavy black population. The singer/ songwriter/ producer was in her early twenties when, around 1977, she landed a job at Motown Records. It was at Motown that she met her mentor and paramour-to-be, Rick James, who ended up doing all of the writing and producing for her debut album of 1979, Wild and Peaceful. That LP, which boasted her hit duet with James, "I'm Just a Sucker for Your Love," didn't show Marie's picture - so many programmers at black radio just assumed she was black. When her second album, Lady T, came out, much of the R&B world was shocked to see how fair-skinned she was. But to many of the black R&B fans who were eating her music up, it really didn't matter - the bottom line was she was a first-rate soul singer whose love of black culture ran deep.

Motown Milestones: The Best of Teena Marie offers a brief but effective introduction to the singer's early-'80s stint at the label, featuring the hits "Can It Be Love," "Don't Look Back," "Now That I Have You," and several others. ~ All Music Guide

BILL KIRCHEN - Word To The Wise (2010)

Bill Kirchen is best known for his work in the '70s with the rebel band Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen. Leading the way, this gang of rock & roll honky tonkers cut a wide path through country and rock, creating an intersection where both could meet and meld together their many guises effortlessly.

You wouldn’t be wrong to refer to Word to the Wise, the latest outing from songwriter, singer and Titan of the Telecaster Bill Kirchen, as a “duets” album. The record—Kirchen’s second for Proper American, hitting May 25—is crammed to the brim with memorable appearances from a revolving cast of characters including Norton Buffalo, Paul Carrack, Commander Cody, Elvis Costello, Blackie Farrell, Dan Hicks, Nick Lowe, Maria Muldaur and Asleep at the Wheel alumna Chris O’Connell.

BUDDY GUY - Buddy's Baddest: The Best Of Buddy Guy (1999)

Buddy Guy revitalized his career when he signed with Silvertone Records in the early '90s. His first album for the label, Damn Right, I've Got the Blues, was a smash success, earning critical acclaim, awards, and sales hand over fist. Prior to that record, he was a legend only among blues fans; afterward, he was a star. Although it was a bit too rock-oriented and slick for purists, Damn Right was a terrific album, setting the pace not only for Guy but for modern electric blues in the '90s. As the decade wore on, Guy continued to make albums for Silvertone, some of them a little complacent, others quite excellent. Buddy's Baddest: The Best of Buddy Guy attempts to summarize those years in 14 songs, including three previously unreleased cuts. Not surprisingly, the compilers favor the Guy of Damn Right, featuring four songs from the record and three from its soundalike sequel, Feels Like Rain. Only two tracks from Slippin' In, his hardest blues record for the label, made the cut, while the fine live album Live! The Real Deal and the misguided Heavy Love are represented by a track apiece. In other words, a lot of good stuff remains on the original albums, which is doubly unfortunate since the three unreleased cuts are all throwaways. By relying so heavily on two records, Buddy's Baddest doesn't wind up being an accurate portrait of Guy's Silvertone recordings. That doesn't mean it's a bad listen, since the first ten songs are all very good and quite entertaining. However, anyone who has Damn Right but wants to dig deeper into Guy's Silvertone albums may prefer to pick up Feels Like Rain, which offers more of the same crossover Chicago blues, or Slippin' In, which is the real deal. - answers.com

TRACKS:
01. Damn Right, I've Got The Blues 02. Five Long Years 03. Mustang Sally 04. Rememberin' Stevie 05. She's A Superstar 06. Feels Like Rain 07. She's Nineteen Years Old 08. I Smell Trouble 09. Someone Else Is Steppin' In (Slippin' Out, Slippin In) 10. My Time After Awhile (live) 11. Midnight Train 12. Miss Ida B 13. I Need Your Love So Bad 14. Innocent Man

JOOLS HOLLAND & HIS RHYTHM & BLUES ORCHESTRA - More Friends: Small World Big Band Volume Two (2002)

In More Friends Jools Holland (and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra) return with a growing motley crew of musicians that have appeared on his eclectic music show Later With Jools Holland. Again, the focus is on what Holland calls "big band blues", there's a rock & roll big-band extravaganza with Tom Jones, a boogie woogie piano jam for Robert Plant and a classic cover from Dionne Warwick to mention but a few of the performances from the great and good that appear here. But Jools' show has always been about championing new and cult artists too, and female jazz vocalist of the moment Norah Jones just had to put in an appearance with her cover of the Nina Simone classic "In The Dark", along with indie regular Badly Drawn Boy. In fact his offering, "The Can Is Open" in particular shines given the Jools treatment with all the big easy listening Bacharach trumpets and playful piano melodies giving it the simple but epic sound so characteristic of his recent album. Likewise the ever charismatic Huey from the Fun Lovin' Criminals is perfect for a good old croon with the band on the old Sinatra standard "Fly Me To The Moon". Sounding like a late night music fan's fantasy jam session, (just listen to Huey joking "hey is there anything left in that bottle?"), More Friends is essential for fans of that big band sound, young or old. - amazon.com

PAUL GILBERT - Acoustic Samurai (2003)

So we all know that Paul Gilbert is certainly fleet fingered on the electric guitar. But what about on the acoustic? Despite being long considered one of rock's top shredders (just check out his faster-than-a-speeding-bullet work with Racer X), interestingly, it was a schmaltzy acoustic ballad that served as Gilbert's career breakthrough - Mr. Big's "To Be with You." And on his 2003 release, Acoustic Samurai, Gilbert picks up the acoustic once more. Recorded live at Tokyo's Hard Rock Café, the 16-track set finds Gilbert in a largely goofy mood, as evidenced by the album's opening - the nonsensical singalong "Potato Head," a cover of ABBA's "Dancing Queen," and "I Like Rock" (just by looking at the latter's title, you know its lyrics won't be confused with Shakespeare anytime soon). Quirky pop continues throughout - as evidenced by such lighthearted ditties as "I Am Satan" and "I'm Not Afraid of the Police." While it was undoubtedly fun for Gilbert to get all this goofiness out of his system (and it sounds like the constantly clapping/singing audience is having the time of their lives), Acoustic Samurai is for hardcore fanatics only.

Paul Gilbert gets out his acoustic guitar and performs live at Tokyo's Hard Rock Cafe on ACOUSTIC SAMURAI. - cduniverse.com

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART - A Carrot Is As Close As A Rabbit Gets To A Diamond (1993)

This set provides an overview of Beefheart's output from UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED onward. It ranges from the final attempt at commercializing his vision on BLUEJEANS & MOONBEAMS (after which Beefheart took a several year retreat from performing and recording) to the gorgeous complexities of "Sheriff of Honk Kong." Additionally, "Light Reflected Off the Oceands [sic] Of the Moon" is included, previously available only on a 12" released concurrently with his last album, ICE CREAM FOR CROW. For anyone curious about exactly what Captain Beefheart did after CLEAR SPOT, this collection affords a intriguing nineteen-song tour.

RAINER AND DAS COMBO - Barefoot Rock With Rainer And Das Combo (1986)

Mention the name Rainer Ptácek to a lover of original contemporary blues or National Steel guitars and there will be an awed silence. Rainer was revered. Rainer died too young of an unoperable brain tumor on November 12, 1997 in Tucson, Arizona. He released four albums during his lifetime: "Worried Spirits" and "Texas Tapes" (originally available on Demon and since deleted) and "Barefoot Rock" and "Nocturnes" (Glitterhouse). His musician friends, including Howe Gelb, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Emmylou Harris and Jonathan Richman, released a benefit album of his songs, 'The Inner Flame' (Atlantic), recorded whilst he was still alive and able to participate. All are treasures in my collection. Happiness is that three previously unrelased albums of Rainer's work will be released in 2000.

On 'Barefoot Rock', originally released in 1986 and then re-released in 1994 with four new tracks, Rainer is accompanied by Nick Augustine on bass and Ralph Gilmore on drums on tracks 1-3, recorded in 1992. Tracks 4-14 were recorded in 1985 with Augustine on bass, Will Clipman on drums and produced by Howe Gelb (now of Giant Sand). This is rough-rocking mix of delta and urban blues with tracks as diverse as the opening Mellow Down Easy (Willie Dixon), Around and Around (J.B. Lenoir) The Last Fair Deal (Robert Johnson). Rainer's funky blues groove on his The Unseen Enemy is moodily unsettling, raw and sparse. In Around and Around and That's How Things Get Done, his National Steel guitar is at it's most vibrant, meanwhile all through the album the ching rhythm section punches it forward. It may be white blues but It's gritty and edgy and Rainer's voice, not known for it's clarity, is ideosynchratic and perfect for what he's saying. It's impossible for me not give give Rainer five stars. His collected works will stand as a landmark for a man who quietly lived the blues and by doing so influenced all those whose path he crossed.

TRACKS:
01. Mellow Down Easy (For Chester) 02. The Unseen Enemy 03. Life Is Fine 04. Barefoot Rock 05. Sleepwalk 06. Around And Around 07. That's How Things Get Done 08. Broken Promises 09. I Am A Sinner 10. If I Had Possesion Over Judgement Day 11. Where's That At 12. The Last Fair Deal 13. How I Wanted You 14. I Wish You Would

TEN WHEEL DRIVE WITH GENYA RAVAN - The Best Of (1995)

Ten Wheel Drive was a highly influential rock/jazz group not afraid to push the envelope while exploring various musical styles. Though musicians came and went, including the original lead vocalist, by the time the fourth album was released, the records have stood the test of time, influencing the successful Bette Midler breakthrough film The Rose, inspiring women with the drive and ambition to front their own group in a once male-dominated industry, getting sold on auction sites like Ebay to be discovered by new generations of music lovers. Genya Ravan is an important rock & roll personality and influential vocalist and record producer, born Genya Zelkowitz in Poland. Her mom later changed her name to Goldie Zelkowitz, Ravan taking her birth name back when she formed the band Ten Wheel Drive.

A collection of most of their best songs from the 3 albums that TEN WHEEL DRIVE Featuring GENYA RAVAN released between 1969 - 1971. These songs sound so clear & fresh on CD. The voice of Genya Ravan fronting a jazz/rock band with a heavy dose of r&b and blues influences is amazing to hear now all these many years later.

JP, CHRISSIE & THE FAIRGROUND BOYS - Fidelity! (2010)

Chrissie Hynde has been candid in her lyrics before, as the Pretenders oeuvre testifies. Yet this – just when an artist of her years and achievements is supposed to slump into cosy, risk-free predictability – is extraordinary. Fidelity! – a collaboration with Welsh singer JP Jones and friends – is an autobiographical love story of uncommon self-exposure.

JP, Chrissie & The Fairground Boys is a project involving the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde, one of the biggest female rock icons of the last 30 years and JP Jones,a 31-year-old musician from Porthcawl, a holiday resort in Wales. Jones and Chrissie met each other in November 2008 in London while he was working on his solo career after his band Grace split and this album bears the fruits of their labour. The Fairground Boys are Patrick Murdoch on guitar, Sam Swallow on piano and keyboards, Vezio Bacci on bass and Geoff Holroyde on drums. - amazon.com

JIM CUDDY

It was the mid-seventies when Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor first met each other in high school. After discovering a mutual love of music, they formed an “amphetamine pop band” called the HiFi’s. The pair moved to New York City in 1981 and tried to land a recording contract. Three years later they returned to Toronto without a deal but discovered a burgeoning club scene where acts like k.d. lang, The Cowboy Junkies and Jeff Healey were honing their chops. Through a series of chance meetings and the classified ads, Jim and Greg formed Blue Rodeo. Since the release of their debut album, Outskirts, in March 1987, Blue Rodeo have established themselves as one of the premiere bands in Canadian music history. They have released ten studio albums, one live album, a Greatest Hits collection, and an award winning DVD, selling in excess of 4 million copies around the world. In 1998, Jim released his first solo album "All In Time", which went on to sell Gold in his native Canada. His second solo recording, "The Light That Guides You Home", hit stores in September 2006 to critical acclaim and Cuddy proves once again that his songwriting ranks with the best Canada has to offer.

1998 - "All in Time"
The second member of Toronto's Blue Rodeo to go solo. To be honest, much of the CD is not much different from the material Jim Cuddy performs with that band: country-tinged rock that isn't out of place on "new country" radio stations. But, as with Blue Rodeo, there is always an edge that prevents the music from sounding too slick, or too country. And the fact that Blue Rodeo bassist Bazil Donovan and former Blue Rodeo keyboardist James Gray provide backup only adds to the trademark sound that fans have come to expect over the years. This is not necessarily a criticism, as Blue Rodeo have created some great albums, and have worked hard to establish their own distinct sound. But there are a few surprises, mainly in the guise of members of Wilco providing musical backup and vocals for the excellent track "I'll Make Believe It's You," the highlight of the CD. Jeff Tweedy and Jim Cuddy sound great together, and Cuddy knew that Tweedy's vocal style suited the song perfectly. That track is evidence that this CD is not a vanity project for Cuddy. He knows what makes a song sound good, and he utilizes his band and guests (such as Michelle McAdorey and Skydigger's Andy Maize) to achieve that sound. The only problem with this CD is that not all the songs are particularly strong, and there is a certain amount of sameness to much of the material, making some songs indistinguishable from others. This is a CD with fantastic moments, but not quite enough of those moments to create an entirely brilliant album. It is, however, a promising debut disc, and it does show that Cuddy can offer more than what he shows in Blue Rodeo. ~ cduniverse.com
TRACKS:
01. Second Son 02. Whistler 03. Disappointment 04. Too Many Hands 05. New Year's Eve 06. All in Time 07. Slide Through Your Hands 08. I'll Make Believe it's You 09. Trouble 10. Making My Way to You 11. Everybody Cries

2006 - "The Light That Guides You Home"
The Light That Guides You Home is the second album by Jim Cuddy. It was released on September 12, 2006. "The Light That Guides You Home" was recorded in Toronto at The Woodshed Studio and produced by Jim Cuddy and Colin Cripps (Kathleen Edwards, Oh Susanna, Junkhouse). Joining Cuddy in the studio were Colin on guitar, Bazil Donovan on bass (Blue Rodeo and whoever asks), Bob Packwood on keyboards (Blue Rodeo, Oh Susanna), Joel Anderson on drums (Kathleen Edwards) and Anne Lindsay on violin. These talented musicians will be joining Cuddy on tour as The Jim Cuddy Band. Guests on the record include Kathleen Edwards who joins Jim on the rowdy duet "Married Again" and Oh Susanna who provides jubilant and, in turn, haunting vocals on "Falling" and "What She Said." These musicians have created a timeless record that speaks to joy, disappointment and the fickle hand of fate. His voice, always a voluptuous instrument, has never sounded better and Cuddy shows that his songwriting ranks with the best Canada has to offer.

BLUE RODEO - The Things We Left Behind (2009)

The title, and even format, of this double set may lead longtime Blue Rodeo fans to believe the band has cleaned out its closet of B-sides and rarities after nearly 23 years. That's not the case, though, as this is yet another superior album of new folk-country-Americana tunes from the pens of Greg Keelor and Jim Cuddy. Since the total time of the CDs is a little more than can fit on a single disc, the package seems to be a statement of old-school double album intent. It comes just over two years after the group's previous studio recording and finds both singing/songwriting frontmen still at themore… top of their games. As usual, Cuddy's shinier pop-country offsets Keelor's more wired, moody style. The songs don't seem to be collaborations even though, like Lennon and McCartney, they take joint credit. The band's core quintet is missing a keyboard player — guests fill in — which is odd considering how vital that instrument is to Blue Rodeo's sweeping sound. Keelor and Cuddy seldom sing harmonies on songs the other takes lead on, calling on another outsider, Wayne Petti, to add his vocal talents. Keelor, often the Lennon to Cuddy's McCartney, also channels George Harrison on "Don't Let the Darkness in Your Head." Additionally, his ominous title track provides an unusually bleak opening to disc one. It's lightened, at least musically, by Cuddy's ching, easy-rolling "One More Night," whose lyrics tell the disturbing story of a small-town murder. Many of the words speak of lost love, unfulfilled dreams, missed life connections, and broken promises, traditionally Blue Rodeo concepts, all married to hooky if sometimes winding melodies. Despite the brevity of their combined times, the objective seems for the platters to be stand-alone projects joined in one package. Both have their emotional epicenters, such as the first CD's nine-minute "Million Miles" and the second's powerful ten-minute closer, "Venus Rising." Those are Keelor-penned and the latter could eventually become a Blue Rodeo catalog highlight in the vein of "Lost Together." With 16 selections, none superfluous, Blue Rodeo continue their long and impressive run as Canada's most gifted roots band

CHRIS REA - Dancing Down The Stony Road (2002)

"Dancing Down the Stony Road" is a remarkable record by most standards, perhaps even those of classic blues. These are songs of pain, performed with a great deal of expression, true blue blues. He voices the agony and the love of life and music he experienced while recovering from a potentially terminal illness. It's his first blues album (and deserves W.C. Handy Awards for every "crossover" category), but it sounds like he's been playing blues all his life.

Originally, Chris Rea wanted to release this as a double cd set with Warner Bros/Magnet Records but they refused saying they would do it as one cd. So Chris Rea left Warner Bros/Magnet Records and set up a new label called Jazzee Blue where he released this great piece of magic. There are some superb tracks on here notably "Easy Rider", "Stony Road", "Dancing The Blues Away", the gorgeous ballad "Give That Girl A Diamond", "When The Good Lord Talked To Jesus", "Sun Is Rising", "Mississippi" and "Burning Feet".

DISC 1:
01. Easy Rider 02. Stony Road 03. Dancing The Blues Away 04. Catfish Girl 05. Burning Feet 06. Slow Dance 07. Segway 08. Mississippi 09. So Lonely 10. Heading For The City

EMMYLOU HARRIS - Spyboy (2000)

The mark of a true legend is the refusal to accept the status quo. From Willie Nelson to Paul Simon to Tom Waits, truly brilliant artists keep on evolving and progressing throughout their career. Emmylou Harris undoubtedly falls into this camp. Through the decades, she's consistently challenged herself, both in terms of material and production, never playing it safe. Nothing exemplifies this more than WRECKING BALL her genre-defying collaboration with producer Daniel Lanois. Focusing on the progressive approach of that album, SPYBOY (also the name of Harris' touring band) presents the singer in a live situation, where her vocal gifts really shine. Her small-but-powerful band is made up of some killer musicians. Guitarist Buddy Miller is a fine country singer-songwriter in his own right, with some great solo albums to his credit. His atmospheric, reverb-heavy guitar sound helps to define SPYBOY. The propulsive drumming of Brady Blade (brother of jazz drumming legend Brian Blade) is also key to the proceedings. What comes through most, naturally, is Harris' commitment to the material, and the enormous spiritual well upon which she draws to put her message across.

The Cowboy Junkies is a Canadian alt-country / alternative rock band with a jazz twist, formed by three siblings from the Timmins entertainment family. The group formed in Toronto in 1985. The band's name was simply a random choice as they approached their first ever gig, but it has come to perfectly represent their sound. (Some sources may credit Townes Van Zandt 's song "Cowboy Junkies Lament" as the source of the band's name, but that song was written especially for Cowboy Junkies several years after they coined the name.)

KEITH RICHARDS - Vintage Vinos (2010)

In conjunction with the release of his autobiography, Keith Richards anthologizes the meager solo output of his band The X-Pensive Winos: two studio CDs he released in 1988 and 1992, and sandwiched between them a live date at the Hollywood Palladium from December of 1988 that he put out as a CD in 1991. A handful of tracks are featured from each disc, and they're respectable choices. Richards' most popular work as a solo performer appeared on "Talk Is Cheap," the first album, which relied on his legendary guitar and patented rasp of a voice. The big single, "Take It So Hard," reached number three on the charts. This and the other four songs that kick off "Vintage Vinos" are very Stones-like on the whole, except for the last cut. It's an exquisite Memphis Soul ballad called "Make No Mistake," propelled by a tight horn section. Keith's gravelly growl suits this material, both the raucous rock workouts and the ballad. The band, with Steve Jordan on drums, Ivan Neville on keyboards, and Waddy Wachtel on guitars, is top-notch. - amazon.com

PAUL REVERE & THE RAIDERS - The Spirit Of '67 (1966) [Original Recording Remastered 1996]

By the time they recorded their third Top Ten album "The Spirit of '67", Paul Revere and the Raiders were firmly established as one of America's best and most popular homegrown rock 'n' roll acts. The band had also begun to spread its wings creatively, expanding the garage-flavored rock 'n' roll of their early hits into more ambitious and sophisticated musical territory. Along with such classic Raiders smashes as "Hungry," "Good Thing" and "The Great Airplane Strike," The Spirit of '67 finds the quintet embracing psychedelia on such tunes as "Oh! To Be a Man," "1001 Arabian Nights" and "Undecided Man," while delivering memorable showcases for bassist Phil "Fang" Volk ("Why? Why? Why?") and drummer Michael "Smitty" Smith ("Our Candidate"). This expanded edition augments the original 11-song album with three rare bonus tracks, including an alternate version of "Hungry" and the single mix of "The Great Airplane Strike." - amazon.com

TANYA TUCKER - Tanya Tucker [Box Set] (1994)

Tanya Tucker is an American country music artist who had her first hit, "Delta Dawn", in 1972 at the age of 13. Over the succeeding decades, Tucker became one of the few child performers to mature into adulthood without losing her audience, and during the course of her career, she notched a streak of Top 10 and Top 40 hits. She has produced a long string of successful albums, several nominations for awards from the Country Music Association, and hit songs that includes 1973's "What's Your Mama's Name?" and "Blood Red and Goin' Down," 1975's "Lizzie and the Rainman," and 1988's "Strong Enough to Bend". Tucker is one of the few and best-known female Country singers to be classified as an "Outlaw" in the Outlaw country movement, which was most popular in the late 70s. As Tucker matured by the end of the 70s, Tucker's outlaw image grew. Like the other Outlaw artists in the business at the time (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, David Allan Coe, Hank Williams Jr.), Tucker was able to combine qualities of Country and Rock music into her voice to make the Outlaw sound that was popular at the time. These qualities could be heard on some of her biggest hits at the time, including 1978's "Texas (When I Die)." Tucker also had a spirit of independence, which was another Outlaw quality. She ranked #9 on CMT's Dozen Greatest Outlaws, the only woman to appear on that list. - wikipedia

NICKEL CREEK - Reasons Why (The Very Best) [2006]

Nickel Creek are the acclaimed acoustic band specialising in bluegrass-rich sounds that often stray between country and indie rock while always sticking to the heavily bluegrass side of the music; a sound the band itself has referred to as "progressive acoustic" and "newgrass". The band formed in 1989 with Chris Thile (mandolin, vocals) and siblings Sara (violin, fiddle, vocals) and Sean Watkins (guitar, vocals) and originally with Chris Thile's father Scott playing string bass. The found fame with the release of their official debut album Nickel Creek (2000) - although they had two unofficial releases much earlier Little Cowpoke (1993) and Here to There (1997). Produced by the country/bluegrass star Alison Krauss, Nickel Creek had moderate success, reaching No.2 in the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart.

The band's second release This Side (2002), again produced by Alison Krauss, saw greater attention due in part to a cover version of Pavement's "Spit On A Stranger". This Side saw Nickel Creek make it into the Billboard 200 chart's top 20 and win the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Their next album, 2005's Why Should The Fire Die, saw their sound evolve even more to the indie rock side, while still keeping the strong bluegrass feel. It proved to be their last studio album however as they announced in 2006 that Nickel Creek would be going on hiatus for an indefinite period of time. - amazon.com

CHRIS FARLOWE - The Art of Chris Farlowe (1966)

Chris Farlowe was hailed as the new in singer when Mick Jagger produced this superb album in 1966. Jagger was among many star vocalists who admired the Cockney lad with the powerful voice. Farlowe certainly had soul and a raucously powerful style. These assets are all exploited on an album promoted by fellow Farlowe enthusiast Andrew Loog Oldham and first released on the independent Immediate label. Farlowe delivers a selection of soul standards such as What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted and I ve Been Loving You Too Long , together with the Stones classic Paint It Black and Out Of Time , a hit song Jagger and Richards wrote especially for Chris. Backed by an orchestra conducted and arranged by Art Greenslade, these are dynamic performances that show why Oldham and Jagger were so excited about their protégé s potential. The original 14 track album is augmented with a further eleven bonus items on this essential CD, including the A and B-sides released between 1967 and 1969, with Michael D Abo s Handbags And many fine compositions given the Farlowe treatment. More than 40 years later, these recordings still sound fresh and dynamic.

The Art of Chris Farlowe is the third 1966 album by British Singer Chris Farlowe, featuring his band, "The Thunderbirds", but only credited to him. Andrew Loog Oldham produced the recordings session with Mick Jagger, who also wrote four songs for Farlowe, later covereaded by The Rolling Stones. In 1992 was reissued featuring 11 bonus tracks.

DUSTY SPRINGFIELD - Dusty In Memphis [1969] Rhino Deluxe Edition (1999)

Just when you thought that the perfect album and its CD equivalent couldn't get any better, along comes Rhino with this 25-song deluxe edition of Dusty in Memphis. The new transfers on the original Dusty in Memphis material are sharper and brighter, but also warmer than the original 1992 CD - the finely nuanced richness of Dusty Springfield's voice on the softer numbers, such as "In the Land of Make Believe" and "Windmills of Your Mind," is captured perfectly on this new edition, where the old CD had a colder, harder texture. Among the bonus tracks, "What Do You Do When Love Dies" comes from the same sessions as the Memphis album, and its noninclusion on the original is difficult to explain, being one of the singer's more exuberant performances and tracks. The highlight of the bonus tracks, however, are the songs left over from sessions for the unfairly underrated Gamble- and Huff-produced Brand New Me album, and the unissued 1971 Jeff Barry-produced sides for a never-released third Atlantic album. If anything, she's more confident and bold on this material than on Dusty in Memphis. The sound is lusher, and heavier as well, but no less seductive and captivating, and the presence of treasures such as her covers of David Gates' "Make It With You" and Carole King's "You've Got a Friend," the gospel-flavored "Love Shine Down," and the hard-rocking "Natchez Trace" all serve to make this a must-own CD, even for those who already have the previous versions. One other nice feature of the new edition is that the clarity of the remastering brings the backing instruments out as never before, which makes one appreciate the production and arrangements as well as her performance. ~ All Music Guide

7 WALKERS - 7 Walkers (2010)

The band 7 Walkers was formed in 2009 by former Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann and guitarist and singer Malcolm Welbourne, better known as Papa Mali, along with multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard and bass player Reed Mathis. In 2010, after most of the tracks for their debut album had been recorded, Mathis went back to touring with his main band, Tea Leaf Green, and was replaced by George Porter, Jr., former bassist of the Meters. Porter appears on one track of the album. The lyrics for most of the songs on 7 Walkers were written by Robert Hunter, who wrote the words for many Grateful Dead songs. According to the Austin Chronicle, "Kreutzmann refers to the music of 7 Walkers as 'swampadelic,' a natural meeting point between his West Coast psychedelia and Welbourne's voodoo-funk. Theirs is a saga of friendship and good fortune, set in the bayou but firmly entrenched in Austin." The album is dedicated to the state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans. - wikipedia

MELANIE - Photograph - Double Exposure [Rhino Handmade] (2005) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Regarded by many as Melanie's finest album, Photograph was critically acclaimed on its debut in 1976 and yet was only ever released in US, Australia and New Zealand. For reasons unknown Atlantic Records later pulled the album from distribution. Nearly 30 years later Photograph finally gets re-issued as a two CD set that includes 14 previously unreleased tracks, recorded during the Photograph sessions. This second disc includes alternate versions and outtakes of key Photograph tracks, plus previously unreleased originals and cover versions. One of the highlights of this re-issue package must surely be the stunning 10 minute version of Groundhog Day, which includes the Great Mantra poem. Unfinished Business is perhaps better know as Leftover Emotions, a version of which was later included on Victim Of The Moon/Crazy Love. The Whamp Bhomp Song is an earlier version of Natural Man, which first appeared on Silver Anniversary. Love To Live Again is a re-working of Love To Lose Again from Madrugada. Here We Go Again and Remember Me Good had previously only been available as live versions. Here We Go Again on the On Air CD and Remember Me Good on the very rare Melanie In Concert transcription disc, both from BBC recordings. Miranda appeared on Ballroom Streets but the version here is an earlier studio recording. Ruby Tuesday is, of course, a re-recording but Jukebox Magazine and Over The Rainbow both get their first ever release on this CD. The version of Nickel Song (Music! Music! Music!) was also included on Melanie's 1983 release Seventh Wave.

ALBERT LEE & HOGAN'S HEROES - Like This (2008) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Albert Lee occupies an odd niche in music - British by birth and upbringing, he spent the mid-'60s as a top R&B guitarist, but in the 1970s became one of the top rockabilly guitarists in the world, and no slouch in country music either. In England he's a been household name, and in Nashville and Los Angeles he's been one of the most in-demand session guitarists there is; but outside of professional music circles in America, he's one of those vaguely recognizable names, and occasionally misidentified with his similar-sounding contemporary, ex-Ten Years After guitarist Alvin Lee (with whom he did share a berth once, in Jerry Lee Lewis's band on the latter's London Sessions album), but where Alvin was a hero of Woodstock and a flashy guitarist, in the manner of British blues extroverts Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, Albert is much more likely to be found playing in the background, behind the Everly Brothers or alongside Eric Clapton. - answers.com

V.A. - Honeymoon In Vegas (1992)

Country singers rule this soundtrack of Elvis Presley covers, which is every bit as flawed, frivolous and fun as the film from whence it came. While Billy Joel parodies "All Shook Up" and "Heartbreak Hotel," John Mellencamp labors to avoid parodying "Jailhouse Rock," and U2's Bono transforms "Can't Help Falling in Love" into an obsessive parable about hero worship, folks like Ricky Van Shelton and Trisha Yearwood just sit back and sing the things, which at least makes them pleasant after more than one plaing. Dwight Yoakam's power-chord-country version of "Suspicious Minds" and Travis Tritt's "Burning Love" rank with their best remakes. Breaking the trend are pop crooner Bryan Ferry, who sings a seductive British soul version of "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and the usually trustworthy Vince Gill, whose Pat Boone-style rendition of Arthur Crudup's classic blues "That's All Right" cleans up the grammar. - cduniverse.com

TESLA - Gold (2008) thumbup

Tesla is an American hard rock band formed in Sacramento, California in 1984. They have sold 14 million albums in the United States. The band formed in 1984 in Sacramento as City Kidd, and was renamed Tesla during the recording of their first album, 1986's Mechanical Resonance, on the advice of their manager that City Kidd was not a great name (in addition, there was already another band going by that name). The band derived their name, certain album and song titles, and some song content from events relating to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla.

All songs digitally remastered, extensive liner notes and special photos. Tesla were classic rock at its purest and its most honest, twin guitars raging, bass and drums pounding, the whole team marching to the same compulsive beat and they have remained true to those qualities ever since. This is the first double disc collection of the best tracks from these platinum - selling rockers! This comprehensive collection, ranging from 1986 through 2007, presents 32 classic tracks and collectibles, including their chart hits. 'Signs', 'Love Song' and 'The Way It Is.' Fan and band favorites like their covers of 'Rock The Nation' (Montrose), 'Love In Vain' (the Rolling Stones), 'I Ain't Superstitious' (the Jeff Beck Group), as well as 'The Ocean' and 'Thank You,' both songs originally by Led Zeppelin, a band that was a major influence on Tesla, are also in the set.

POTLIQUOR - Discography

1970 - First Taste
This band is one of the alltime greatest rock n roll bands to ever exist, and they are so obscure noone has even rated them here. They have all the guitar balls of the Stones, with a vocalist that at times sounds like the guy from Hootie and the Blowfish and at other times he sounds like Burton Cummings. This album is nicely produced for being done in, I think 1971. I spent years looking for Potliquor albums before I found them all. I have been turning people I know onto Potliquor for years, and it blows them away. Sometimes this bands vocals sound like barbershop quartet. I bought a 45 called "Cheer" that was a hit song by this band in 1972, and when I flipped it over and listened to "Chattanooga" on the other side, I was blown away. Ever since I kept my eyes out for their somewhat hard to find albums. To my knowledge, First Taste is the only Potliquor album available on CD. That is a damn shame, these guys were southern rock before southern rock truly existed, and they did it better than anyone else. - crmusicnews.com
TRACKS:
01. Down The River Boogie 02. Ol' Man River 03. Riverboat 04. Toballby 05. The Raven 06. You're No Good 07. Price 20 Cents A Copy 08. Driftin'

1971 - Levee Blues
Potliquor hailed from Louisiana and straddled the line between country, blues, southern rock and hard rock...all the while throwing in horns just to keep things fresh. With a powerful singer in George Ratzlaff, Potliquor were able to muster some pretty inspired moments on vinyl. This, their elusive second album, "Levee Blues" is widely considered their artistic peak. With an ensemble of female background vocalists in tow, the album bears a certain gospel charm that some of their other efforts were missing. This is a passionate and visceral collection of songs and any lover of the aforementioned genres would be well served to check them out. - crmusicnews.com
TRACKS:
01. Cheer 02. Train 03. Levee Blues 04. Rooster Blues 05. Chattanooga 06. You're No Good 07. Lady Madonna 08. When God Dips His Love in My Heart 09. Beyond the River Jordan

1973 - Louisiana Rock And Roll
Potliquor hailed from Louisiana and straddled the line between country, blues, southern rock and hard rock...all the while throwing in horns just to keep things fresh. With a powerful singer in George Ratzlaff, Potliquor were able to muster some pretty inspired moments on vinyl. "Pot Liquor was a top regional touring act. Likemany great acts, they never sold records like they should have. But they did tour, and expose many young southerners to what amounts to some of the first "southern rock" bands. Some of the best music, ever! And, the best name ever for a southern rock band! As for "Louisiana Rock and Roll", it rocks! From the opening of "You Can't get there form Here, to the closing track, "Guitar Boogie", this is one of the finest rock and roll records I have ever heard. Pot Liquor rocked my generation". - crmusicnews.com
TRACKS:
01. You Can't Get There from Here 02. Waitin' for Me at the River 03. Taj and Johnny's Blues 04. Rip It Up 05. "H" 06. Louisiana Rock 'n' Roll 07. St. Jude's Blues 08. Born Under a Bad Sign 09. Guitar Boogie 10. For You

1979 - Potliquor
Here's another release from Louisiana's Potliquor. By 1979, the band had undergone noticable changes both with an overhaul of the entire lineup(minus bassist Guy Schaeffer) and the band's musical direction. Where classic Potliquor were drenched in gospel influenced southern rock, this reborn lineup were aiming more for Allman Brothers territory. Along with a lineup change, the band also found a new home at Capitol Records, which presented greater career possibilities than their previous contract with the smaller Janus label. Whether this change prompted mass resistance is not known, but surely fans were divided when the singles from this effort hit the airwaves later that year. It is known that the band toured for a year or so before collapsing completely. Members went on to work in various bands as well as pursuing other interests outside of the business. - crmusicnews.com
TRACKS:
01. Right Street / Wrong Direction 02. Red Stick 03. Misery 04. Mr. President 04. Hey Mama 05. Boy Oh Boy 06. Life Should Be a Laugh 07. Liar 08. Louisiana Lady 09. Oh So Long

Last line-up:
- Jerry Amoroso : Vocals, Drums, percussions
- Guy Schaeffer : Bass
- Mike McQuaig : Vocals, Guitar [1979]
- Steve Sather : Vocals, Guitar [1979]
Former/Past members:
- George Ratzlaff : Vocals, Guitar, Keyboard [1970-1973]
- Les Wallace : Vocals, Guitar [1970-1973]

CALVIN RUSSELL - This Is My Life: The Story Of Calvin Russell (1997)

Calvin Russell is an American roots rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. Calvin Russell is the real deal, an authentic Texas-born cowboy whose face is a trail of hard-earned lines, proof of the rough mileage he's put on his body since his birth in 1948 in Austin. For someone who likes Texas and Russell's brand of country music, the act of researching his life and misadventures could be fun if it weren't for one thing: all the juicy stuff - including Russell's stint in jail - that's been printed about the singing American cowboy is in French. Sometimes it's in another European language. Far less often will you find any significant write-ups in the language of his birthplace, and that's because Russell found his greatest success, professionally and personally, far from home. He is a business owner; the proprietor of a Swiss nightclub. His wife is Swiss. A good percentage of his albums were recorded in Europe. The singer/songwriter was one of nine children born to his working-class parents, Red and Daisy. The family lived on an unpaved road, not far from the town's wrecking yard. His mom was a waitress in the same little café where his dad did the cooking. Calvin Russell, their sixth child, spent his youth putting together hot-rod cars. Before he turned 13, he'd discovered the guitar. Within a year, Russell was playing with an outfit called the Cavemen. A wild time during his teens brought him to the attention of local authorities, who sent him to juvenile detention and, later, prison. At one point in the mid-'80s, he did time in a Mexican jail, where he spent his nights on a cold concrete floor. Upon his release, he headed back to his hometown, where his condition didn't improve much. He made his bed outdoors, in the small area beneath a house, in the dirt. Russell took to the open road on a motorcycle and began to write his songs in the Texas hill country. By 1985, he had a single to his credit. Thanks to a chance meeting with record company executive Patrick Mathe four years later at Austin's Continental Club, Russell landed a contract with the French company that would release many of his albums, New Rose Records. Russell later went on to sign with Sony after New Rose Records folded. New Rose's release of Russell's A Crack in Time album in 1990 caused a stir for the artist, and he started picking up quite a bit of attention. He went on to play festivals in Europe alongside such artists as the Kinks and Little Village. Three more albums followed from New Rose. Le Voyageur is a recording of live shows performed by Russell in such French cities as Rennes and Paris. When the record company was sinking and its assets frozen in bankruptcy proceedings, Russell was very close to having his career tied up in the company's legal woes. Dick Rivers, who had a career decades earlier in pop, rescued Russell when he purchased the singer/songwriter's contract. Soon, Sony found Russell and stepped into the picture. ~ All Music Guide

MORELAND & ARBUCKLE - Flood (2010)

Moreland & Arbuckle is a blues duo founded in Kansas, in 2002. The group, consisting of guitarist Aaron "Chainsaw" Moreland, and vocalist/blues harp player Dustin Arbuckle. They are signed to Toronto's NorthernBlues Music and known for their combination of rural blues, Delta, and Mississippi Hill Country styles. Dustin Arbuckle and Aaron Moreland have been working together on the blues scene for quite some time, self-releasing a series of albums before making the jump to a label (Telarc) for their 2010 release Flood. Since its release earlier this year, it has been a fixture on the Billboard Blues chart and continues to get significant airplay at blues radio. There is a fine line between creating a cohesive collection of songs that coalesce into a whole and fatiguing listeners with an unrelenting style or sound. Flood is more the former but is at times guilty of the latter, having two primary sounds from which their songs are birthed: the thick, sludgy, visceral mixture of electric blues and roots and then there is their more traditional, spare acoustic style.

RANDY ROGERS BAND - Burning The Day (2010)

A classic return to form and a brave new direction, Burning the Day refuses to be put on pause, stays in your car for weeks on end, and the songs cannot be turned on low. The album feels like a late, warm summer's afternoon drive with the top down that ends up lasting long after the sun goes down. Burning the Day is their third release on UMG Nashville, and Randy Rogers Band is out to leave a lasting mark with collection of 11 rock-country fire-branded songs. The Texas-born-and-bred crew, who earned their road-warrior reputation in bars and dives across the American West, still spends more than 200 days on the road a year, breaking attendance records at venues on each tour. But they aren't just hitting red dirt dens anymore, they're opening for the likes of Willie Nelson and The Eagles, and landing spots on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Late Show With David Letterman. Their two previous albums debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes Country Chart and in the Top 5 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart. They earned two ACM Vocal Group of the Year nominations and were named Country Album of The Year in Playboy magazine for their last studio effort. All of these signs point to success, but on the road map of the band's career, their route has yet to take them to a major win on country radio--that changes with Burning the Day. - amazon.com

THE APRIL WINE - The April Wine Collection (1991)

Canadian hard rock band April Wine were originally formed in 1969 in Waverley, Nova Scotia by Myles Goodwyn (vocals and guitar), David Henman (guitar), his brother Ritchie Henman (drums) and their cousin Jim Henman (bass); although only Myles Goodwyn would remain for the entire career of the band, the rest of line-up change many times though the years. April Wine found success with their second studio album On Record, which spawned two huge hit singles in Canada, "You Could Have Been a Lady", a cover of the Hot Chocolate song, and "Bad Side of the Moon", originally an Elton John song. They secured their fame and fan-base with their third release Electric Jewels and its many hit songs including, "Just Like That", "Lady Run, Lady Hide" and "Weeping Widow". The bulk of the band's success came in the 70s and early 80s, and during that time they released 12 studio albums and had numerous hit singles in Canada and toured extensively, primarily throughout Canada. The band broke-up in 1986 but reformed in 1992 and went on to release four more studio albums. In 2010, April Wine was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, with Myles Goodwyn and Brian Greenway accepting.

CHICAGO - Chicago At Carnegie Hall [Rhino 4 Disc Box Set] (2005)

When it was first released as a four-LP package in 1972, this marathon live recording hit #3 on Billboard's Pop album chart and was certified RIAA gold. Following up their 1971 album Chicago III, this historic set features all the early hits and spotlights Chicago at the peak of their initial success. Painstakingly remastered, it now includes a full disc of previously unreleased material showcasing their trademark horns, Robert Lamm's keyboards and vocals, and the guitar virtuosity of the late Terry Kath. The set's packaging makes a nod to the original LP release, with an outer cardboard slipcase, four CDs in individual jackets, a 36-page booklet with original LP artwork, and mini-reproductions of the three huge posters that were part of the original release.

Hats off to Chicago and Rhino Records for such a stellar reissue of this classic concert.

JO JO GUNNE

With the addition of Andes' brother, Matt Andes (guitar, vocals) and William "Curly" Smith (drums, vocals and harp), they were signed to Asylum Records. Jo Jo Gunne had a Top 10 hit in the UK Singles Chart with the song, "Run Run Run", taken from their first album, Jo Jo Gunne (1972), which peaked at 27 in U.S. charts, and received airplay on U.S. album-oriented rock FM radio stations. The group did not maintain the commercial momentum of their first release. With Jumpin' the Gunne's tasteless album cover being blamed for drastically falling sales, they broke up in 1975. However they made several notable tracks, especially "Take It Easy", "Broken Down Man", "Neon City" and "Falling Angel".

Following the first album, Mark Andes left the band and was replaced by Jimmie Randall. Randall introduced a brighter bass sound and helped increase the band's overall volume. Matt Andes left after Jumpin' the Gunne, and he was briefly replaced by Star Donaldson. A more permanent replacement was found in John Staehely (born 25 January 1952, Austin, Texas), who had played on Feedback, the Spirit album that followed Ferguson and Ande's departure. Staehely's overdriven guitar was a complete change from Matt Andes's Ry Cooder style slide guitar. After the band broke up, Ferguson recorded several solo albums, including the hit singles "Thunder Island" and "Shakedown Cruise", and scored TV shows and mostly non-notable films. Andes joined Firefall and, later, Heart. Smith went on to have a successful career as a session drummer, and also played with Spirit in the 1980s and Boston from 1994 to 2000. The original line-up reformed in 2005, and began touring and recording again.

Albums:

* Jo Jo Gunne (1972)
* Bite Down Hard (1973)
* Jumpin' The Gunne (1973)
* So...Where's The Show? (1974)
* Big Chain (2005)

CALVIN RUSSELL - Contrabendo (2010)

2010 double live album from roots rocker. His album 'Unrepentant' released at the beginning of 2008 had almost the character of a comeback album of the blues legend. After its success last year came another gem of the Texan in exile in Paris in the form of the CD 'Dawg Eat Dawg'. But there never was a thinking of a break. The show of The Unrepentant Tour (from 2007), before the album was released, is now available on double CD and the first time on DVD. For anyone who previously may not have come to enjoy a concert of Calvin Russell, a chance to experience this mix of Blues & Rock & Country with a real 'Live' feeling on 2 legs.

Calvin Russell is an American roots rock singer - songwriter and guitarist. At 12 he started to learn guitar and at 13 joined a band called 'The Cavemen'. In 1989 he met Patrick Mathe of the French record label New Rose. After his first album was released, Russell started touring in Europe in 1990. Ten years and twelve CDs later, leaving behind legions of European fans (as in fanatics), Calvin Russell has come home. Playing many of Austin’s legendary music clubs, Calvin has been discovered again, and this time by Texans, by God. He's back in Texas, where he belongs and he's bringing his message back to the USA. For Calvin Russell the future is now. He is an American original; a genuine roots treasure with a microphone and a guitar as well as he can with a superstar band. He is without a doubt, the real thing.

JIMMY BARNES - The Rhythm And The Blues (2009)

James Dixon Swan, better known as Jimmy Barnes, is a Scottish-born Australian rock singer-songwriter. Most of you might already know (and some of you lived thru it) that the Jimmy Barnes 1991 'Soul Deep' album is not only the biggest seller in his illustrious career, but was also the most successful in Mushroom Records history. This new collection of songs is not strictly 'soul' but moreso a 50's and 60's rock, rhythm and blues blend. The Rhythm & The Blues is where rock 'n' roll and modern soul started back in the 50's and 60's. It's dedicated to the pioneers and forefathers of modern music, and crosses the gamut from rock to swing to soul, but all songs have that common rhythm and blues thread. The album has again been produced by Don Gehman in L.A (Soul Deep and Soul Deeper) and features some of the best and most qualified musicians and session singers going around). Featurng: Shake Rattle and Roll - Big Joe Turner; I Was Made To Love her - Stevie Wonder / Jackie Wilson; Young Blood - The Coasters; A Fool In Love - Ike and Tina Turner; I've Got Reasons - Mary Jane Hooper. - amazon.com

GOTTHARD - Heaven: Best Of Ballads, Part 2 (2010)

„Heaven – Best Of Ballads Part II“ represents the most successful era of a band that has been together in the same line-up since the late 80s and which would only be split by death. It stands for eight years of band history in which GOTTHARD had their big international break-through and were awarded diamond status for more than one million copies sold in their home country. No other band is such a symbol for Swiss music history as GOTTHARD.

“Heaven” also represents a memorial for one of the greatest and also most human personalities of the rock business. “We lost not only one of the best rock voices of the world, we also lost a really exceptional person, friend, brother and musician.” states drummer Hena Habegger. “Despite his tremendous success, Steve Lee always had his feet on the ground and never lost his sensitivity for the environment.” “Heaven” conveys that deep respect which Steve Lee had towards anyone, any time.

V.A. - Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs Of Bob Dylan (2003)

Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan is a tribute album released on the Sony/Columbia label in 2003, which features traditional and contemporary gospel singers performing songs written by Bob Dylan during his "born again" period (1979–81). Five songs on the album had originally appeared in Dylan's own performances on his first Christian album, Slow Train Coming, and six songs had appeared on his second, Saved. There are none taken from his third and last album form this period, Shot of Love. Dylan himself performs on the album in a duet with Mavis Staples of "Gonna Change My Way of Thinking," which Dylan completely re-wrote and prefaced by some humorous banter between the two. The Gotta Serve Somebody CD was Grammy nominated for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album and also Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for the Bob Dylan and Mavis Staples duet. - wikipedia

ZORA YOUNG

Zora Young is an American blues singer. She is a distant relative of Howlin' Wolf. Young's family moved to Chicago at age seven and sang gospel at the Greater Harvest Baptist Church.[1] As an adult she began singing blues and R&B music, and over the course of her career played with Junior Wells, Jimmy Dawkins, Bobby Rush, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Professor Eddie Lusk, and B. B. King. Among those she has collaborated with on record are Willie Dixon, Sunnyland Slim, Mississippi Heat, Paul DeLay, and Maurice John Vaughan. In 1982, she toured Europe on the bill with Bonnie Lee and Big Time Sarah in 'Blues with the Girls', and then recorded an album in Paris, France. She was later cast in the role of Bessie Smith in the stage show, The Heart of the Blues. By 1991 she had recorded the album, Travelin' Light, with the Canadian guitar player, Colin Linden. Young has toured Europe more than thirty times, in addition to appearances in Turkey and Taiwan. She was the featured performer at the Chicago Blues Festival three times.

2009 - "Sunnyland"
With the help of guitar legend Hubert Sumlin and saxophonist/producer Sam Burckhardt, the veteran Young, who has previously recorded for Delmark Records, pays tribute to the late pianist Albert Luandrew, a.k.a Sunnyland Slim (1907-1995). Both Sumlin and Young worked with Sunnyland, as well as Burckhardt, bassist Bob Stroger and guitarist Steve Freund. The spirit of Sunnyland is felt through two of the pianist's classic tunes, 'Goin' Back to Memphis' and 'Johnson Machine Gun'. Pianist Barrelhouse Chuck, who studied with Sunnyland in the 1980s, is a torch bearer for the rich legacy of Chicago blues piano. His romping solos, especially on instrumentals like the jumping title track and the minor-keyed 'Blues for Hubert', keep the party rolling in high gear.

2009 - "The French Connection"
The love affair between Europe and the blues began in the early 50s with the arrival of Big Bill Broonzy who performed in Limoges, France, where most of the musicians on this album come from and where it was recorded. Zora first performed in Europe in 1981 and has made more than 20 tours in France. Inspired by Zora & Bobby Dirninger's recording of Two Trains Running on her previous Delmark album (Tore Up From the Floor Up), producer Chris Dussuchaud sested a half-electric / half-acoustic album. The French Connection is Zora's renditions of not only Chicago blues, but also gospel, jazz, deep Mississippi blues and country music in her own, very special way.

BRIDGET St. JOHN - BBC Radio 1968-1976 (2010)

Fans of singer, songwriter, and Brit-folk chanteuse Bridget St. John will no doubt be delighted by this double-disc, 41-cut selection of her BBC recordings with John Peel and other DJs from the late '60s through the mid-'70s. Peel was hosting Top Gear at this time, and took over the network's Night Ride program from producer John Muir in 1968. St. John appeared on Night Ride first and that initial off-air rehearsal performance is here, near the end of disc two at her insistence, though its audio quality is not as high as most on this handsome package. The songs she chose for this performance are quite telling: "To Be Without a Hitch," "Ask Me No Questions," "Rochefort," and "Lizard Long Tongue Boy," to mention a few. This set is not arranged chronologically, which may piss off a few hardcore collectors and bibliophiles, but that's what remote controls and multi-disc changers are for. It is arranged aesthetically - the material on disc one is nearly flawlessly reproduced, while disc two has some rougher live spots (that do not take away from the performances). The package, with copious liner notes and an interview with St. John, has been wonderfully compiled and sequenced by Hux with the full cooperation of the artist and was beautifully remastered by Ron Geesin, who appears as a sideman on many of these sessions, as do Mike Oldfield, Bernie Marsden, and David Bedford. - cduniverse.com

She had a career singing in the 1960s and 1970s, and has continued recording into the 21st century. In 1975, Ian won a Grammy Award for her song, "At Seventeen". "Breaking Silence" finds Ian ditching her past waifishness for a confident, mature, contemporary acoustic approach relying mostly on spare guitar and piano textures. Opening with "All Roads to the River" (also recorded by John Mellencamp), Breaking Silence includes among its highlights the Holocaust-survivor tale "Tattoo" and the dramatic half-a cappella, half-syncopated-rocker title track. ~ All Music Guide

TONY JOE WHITE - Live In Amsterdam (2010)

Though never a huge commercial success, Louisiana-born singer-songwriter/guitarist Tony Joe White is revered amongst musicians and blues and rock aficionados alike as the King of Swamp Rock. White's songs were made famous by others in the late 1960s and early '70s (Dusty Springfield, for one, turned in a stellar reading of "Willie and Laura Mae Jones"), but his own thick, husky drawl and languid, rootsy guitar playing has made him something of musician's musician, and endeared him to the likes of Lucinda Williams, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, and Bonnie Raitt among many others.

Recorded on November 6, 2008 at Paradiso, Amsterdam, NL.

GRAHAM PARKER & THE RUMOUR - The Vertigo Records Singles Collection (2008)

Graham Parker is a British rock singer and songwriter, who is best known as the lead singer of the popular British New Wave band Graham Parker & the Rumour. For over 30 years, Graham Parker has been slinging a signature sound across continents and airwaves that has rightly earned him a spot in the pantheon of truly original and influential figures in rock and roll. Since his early days with his band the Rumour (with whom he has two albums in Rolling Stone’s “Top 100 Albums of All Time”), Graham has coupled punk’s energy with his deeply rooted love of American R&B, country and soul music. He’s got a snotty barroom brawler’s rasp and sneer, a soulman’s swagger and an ear for indelible hooks and pop songcraft.

MIKE OLDFIELD - Elements [4CD BOX SET] (1993)

Mike Oldfield was born in England in 1953, the multi instrumentalist laid down a landmark in music with his 1973 album, Tubular Bells. Oldfield began his musical career playing folk music and with his sister Sally formed The Sallyangie, after which he teamed up with his brother Terry in the rock band Barefoot before going on to join Kevin Ayers in The Whole World. His two years with the band produced the albums whatevershebringswesing and Shooting at the Moon after which he left to work on his own ideas. In 1973 Oldfield released Tubular Bells, a two part instrumental piece which introduced themes and developed them in a classical style. Oldfield played most of the instruments himself, multi-tracking them, which was something of a rarity at the time. He convinced Richard Branson to make Tubular Bells, not regarded as traditional pop fare, the debut album of Branson's new record label Virgin Records. The album was a huge commercial success, establishing Mike Oldfield and securing the future for Virgin Records. The album spent 279 weeks on the charts and is amongst the best selling albums in the UK. The music was later used in the 1974 film The Exorcist for which he received the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. The follow up Hergest Ridge went to No.1 in the UK, but was dislodged from the top spot by a re-emergent Tubular Bells. Subsequent releases failed to match the commercial success of Tubular Bells although his music proved to be successful for other artists; the Hall & Oates cover of "Family Man" was a top ten hit in the UK and US, while Bonnie Tyler charted with "Islands". In 1983 Maggie Reilly and Oldfield had a hit with "Moonlight Shadow". Oldfield turned his writing skills to other media providing music for the 1984 film The Killing Fields and in 2002 he released a computer game,Tr3s Lunas which allowed the player to interact with music from the album of the same name. In 2003, on the thirtieth anniversary of its release, he returned to Tubular Bells, re-recording the album with the benefits of modern technology. - amazon.com

ROBIN TROWER - The Playful Heart (2010)

When it comes to old-school classic-rock guitar heroes, Robin Trower stands right alongside big dogs like Hendrix and Clapton. Not only was he part of the classic Procol Harum lineup - the guy played on "A Whiter Shade of Pale" for God's sake - he was one of the leading blues-rock axemen of the '70s. But Trower's accomplishment's aren't all in the past - he continues to make new music, and The Playful Heart finds the U.K. six-string legend turning out plenty of ripping leads even while offering up a batch of tunes that's a bit more low-key and introspective than some of his previous outings.

The latest studio recording by one of Rock/Blues legendary guitarists. Recorded with his touring band, produced by long-time musical cohort Livingston Brown, these eleven new songs show a more introspective Robin Trower. The guitar work alone requires that any aspiring player have this CD in his collection, and the loyal fans will all need a copy. A 50-city tour will publicize the new music and stir up attention starting in January 2011.

TRACKS:
01. The Playful Heart 02. Don't Look Back 03. The Turning 04. Dressed In Gold 05. Find Me 06. Song For Those Who Fell 07. Maybe I Can Be a Friend 08. Prince of Shattered Dreams 09. Camille 10. Not Inside - Outside 11. And We Shall Call It Love

SANDY DENNY - Live At The BBC (2007)

Though regularly hailed as one of English music's finest voices, Sandy Denny's solo work has never quite enjoyed the sort of adulation that's heaped on her work with Fairport Convention, or even Fotheringay or The Strawbs (not to mention her cameo appearance with Led Zeppelin). Maybe it's because her solo albums never quite delivered on their promise; though studded with great songs and performances, they were an uneven bunch, sometimes burdened with unsympathetic production and overcooked arrangements. In a way it's records like this one where Denny's talents are best displayed. The early appearances here (from 1967) are probably best described as 'of historical interest', though Denny's bell-like voice could transform the most indifferent or derivative material even at this stage. Arguably it was after her first spell with Fairport that she found her way as a songwriter, giving the poetic, impressionistic confessionals of the Joni Mitchell school a distinctly English, unsentimental voice. The stripped down arrangements on these session and concert performances (most are played solo) allow the limpid, melancholy beauty of her songwriting to shine through. Several of these versions outstrip their studio counterparts easily. Even a wobbly lo-fi cassette recording of 'The North Star Grassman And The Ravens' is up there with the original. The few tracks performed with a full band range from a stab at jazz to a rockin' version of 'Dark The Night' that sounds uncannily like All About Eve; evidence both of her eclecticism and the deep influence her work has had on a huge range of musicians since her death. - amazon.com

One of the finest singers England has ever produced, Sandy Denny was a linchpin of the original Fairport Convention. Delivering, alongside Richard Thompson and Ian Matthews, a radical mixture of Dylan covers and Renaissance music, she helped make Fairport leaders of Britain's '60s Olde Musik revival. These BBC performances were recorded 1971-73 and feature Sandy promoting her solo material with great performances that are often better than the slightly over-produced studio versions.

PETE SEEGER - Headlines & Footnotes: A Collection Of Topical Songs (1999)

By the '60s, Pete Seeger was as well known--possibly even more well known--for his outspoken social activism as he was for his remarkable performing skills and the depth of his knowledge as a historian and ethnomusicologist. This 23-track anthology, culled from live and studio recordings, touches on all of these aspects. Archiving anthems from the union organization, civil rights and anti-war movements alongside songs concerning specific historical events such as the sinking of the Titanic and the Reuben James. Among the highlights is the savage "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," one of Seeger's most controversial songs, a Vietnam allegory based on a '40s incident in which a foot soldier drowned when his commanding officer forced him to walk in water without knowing how deep it was. The extensive liner notes place these songs in their proper historical context. - cduniverse.com

Recorded between 1955 and 1999.

UFO - The Best Of A Decade (2010)

The legendary UFO has landed again. Picking and choosing their best tracks – both studio and live – from the last few years of their existence, UFO remains a force to be reckoned with…With roots dating back to the London club scene in the late 1960s, UFO has remained a consistently solid band despite numerous shakeups and personnel changes. Today’s new UFO music is just as powerful as their decades-old music – somehow the band has managed to evolve their sound without losing their unique style. 2010’s UFO tracks are just as “UFO” as 1973’s. Even though the peak of their popularity was during the Michael Schenker years of the mid to late 1970s, founding member and vocalist Phil Mogg has consistently pushed UFO along. Now well-known American guitarist Vinnie Moore slings the ax for UFO, along with long time member Paul Raymond and original drummer Andy Parker, giving UFO one of their strongest lineups ever... - hardrockhaven.net

SANDY DENNY - Where The Time Goes (2005)

Denny appeared on two albums for Saga Records in 1967, Alex Campbell & Friends (on which she took lead vocals on three numbers) and Sandy & Johnny, a split LP with Johnny Silvio, On which she sang six songs. In 1970 Sandy's 'solo' performances were compiled together on an album, simply titled Sandy Denny, which ha subsequently been re-released on a number of occasions, usually repackaged along the lines of 'The Original...' However, this material has never yet been well-served on CD, the most recent version (on the Mooncrest label) being a particularly poor vinyl dub. This time around these recordings will have vastly improved sound quality, and the collection is further enhanced via the inclusion of bonus tracks: Alex Campbell's version of his own 'Been On The Road So Long' recognisably features Sandy on backing vocals, whilst we've also included two sides from the LP she recorded with The Strawbs in 1968, including the original version of Denny's own 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes'.

TRACKS:
01. Who Knows Where the Time Goes (with The Strawbs) 02. This Train 03. 3.10 to Yuma 04. Pretty Polly 05. You Never Wanted Me 06. Milk and Honey 07. My Ramblin' Boy 08. The Last Thing on My Mind 09. Make Me a Pallet on the Floor 10. The False Bride 11. Been on the Road So Long 12. Two Weeks Last Summer (with The Strawbs) 13. 3.10 to Yuma [alternate take] 14. Pretty Polly [alternate take] 15. V.A. - How Many Roads: Black America Sings Bob Dylan (2010) thumbup thumbupthumbup

Bob Dylan's songs impacted on 1960 black American singers in a way that few (if any) of his peers compositions were able to. It was through Dylan's important protest songs that artists such as Sam Cooke found their way to articulate dissatisfaction at being regarded as second-class citizens. Some of the best recordings of Bob's later love songs have been by artists from the worlds of soul, jazz and blues. "How Many Roads" celebrates black America's love affair with the songs of Bob Dylan via 24 diverse interpretations of some of his best, and several of his least known songs. From the intense gospel of the Staple Singers - one of the first acts in any genre to cover Dylan material - through to the funky jazz of Sarah Vaughan, all the bases are covered and covered comprehensively. It will surprise many to learn just who from the world of soul has, at one time or another, applied their vocal talents to a Dylan song, and surprise many others just how eclectic some have been in their choice of repertoire. All of these songs are established Dylan classics, to one degree or another. Some of these versions will be very well known to everyone, others have dwelt in obscurity virtually since the day of their first release several decades ago and many are making their CD debut here. Together they make for a fascinating reinterpretation of the catalogue of one of the most important singer-songwriters of all. - amazon.com

SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS - I Learned The Hard Way (2010)

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are already well known as one of the most exciting acts in the nation for both their explosive live shows and their prolific output of gritty studio recordings. Their breakout release, 100 Days, 100 Nights, sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. This Spring the band will release I Learned the Hard Way, their fourth full-length on Brooklyn’s independent Daptone Records. The record marks a bold step forward for a band who almost single handedly stewarded today’s return of soul music to its more traditional sound. Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records’ House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon’s raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lush Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in “The Game Gets Old” at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style “Mama Don’t Like My Man” at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the “Daptone Sound” at its best. - amazon.com

RICHARD & LINDA THOMPSON - Shoot Out The Lights: Rhino Handmade Edition (2010)

Richard & Linda Thompson's potent and epochal 1982 classic Shoot Out The Lights is getting the double-disc reissue treatment from Warner's online-only imprint Rhino Handmade. The set is released on Oct. 20. The original album, an unflinching look at the downside of love and by critical consensus one of the top releases of the 1980s, is expanded with a live disc recorded during the legendary tour in support of the album - a tour which saw the couple's faltering relationship dissolve in acrimony, but which also, according to legend, inspired some remarkably intense performances. The live material includes covers of Hank Williams' "Honky Tonk Blues" and Bob Dylan's "I'll Keep It With Mine."

Rhino Handmade reissues the couple's legendary swan song as a two-disc deluxe edition that includes the original album along with a bonus disc of 11 unreleased live performances from the tour. The live disc is a wonderful revelation and includes some frighteningly good guitar work from Richard Thompson. He plays like a man with something to prove, and has sympathetic backing from a band that featured three members of Thompson’s former band, Fairport Convention. Oddly the best track here is the most poorly recorded, taken from a soundboard mix cassette. It’s a stunning take on Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Keep It With Mine.” There is also an exquisite vocal rendition of “Pavanne” by Linda, accompanied only by Richard’s acoustic guitar playing. Richard shines on the undeniable “Borrowed Time.” In light of the history that we now know, it’s hard not to have your heart broken by “Dimming of the Day.”

DISC 1:
01. Don't Renege On Our Love 02. Walking On A Wire 03. Man In Need 04. Just The Motion 05. Shoot Out The Lights 06. Back Street Slide 07. Did She Jump or Was She Pushed 08. Wall Of Death

HENRIK FREISCHLADER - Tour 2010 Live (2010) thumbup

Within 3 years, Henrik Freischlader celebrated 3 successful CD releases and over 500 concerts, which catapulted him to the top of the Blues scene. As some music critics prophesized at the beginning of his career, Henrik is now exactly where he always wanted to be. Blues is his language, a living form for expressing pain and sorrow, anger and rage, humor and happiness, through which he offers the faithful and thankful audience a new inside into the virtuosity of his seemingly limitless musical abilities. Numerous appearances with blues legends such as Peter Green, Johnny Winter and Joe Bonamassa have introduced Henrik Freischlader to a larger audience. However, it was at the small concerts in front of a smaller audience, which could be jam-packed and intense, where the "blues-spark" connected him with his audience. No wonder then that this "spark" has carried on, and the status of his concerts as an "insider tip" has gotten more and more blues fans even outside of Germany interested. As a consequence, a faithful fan base in France, Poland, Luxembourg, Austria and Switzerland. The requests for shows have multiplied and it will be exciting to see where Henrik Freischlader and his band will be playing in the future.

CASSANDRA WILSON - Silver Pony (2010)

Widely regarded as the top Jazz singer of her generation (TIME magazine actually named her "America's Best Singer" in recent years), Grammywinner Cassandra Wilson has been praised as an innovator who has reinvented the art form and expanded its boundaries time and time again on such albums as Blue Light 'Til Dawn, New Moon Daughter, Traveling Miles, thunderbird and Loverly. The sultry, smokey-voiced chanteuse breaks new ground once again on her new album Silver Pony. A collection of live and studio recordings that highlight the creative prowess of a stellar band, the original idea behind Silver Pony was to use excerpts from the live shows as the genesis for further explorations in the studio. Blending the two environments leads to some truly inspirational moments and brand new songs evolve as the band in the studio continues to develop some of the same themes initiated in live performances from Warsaw, Seville, and Granada. - amazon.com

MAVIS STAPLES - You Are Not Alone (2010)

Mavis Staples may not have a voice with the kind of range and pure power of an Aretha Franklin, but she understands theins and outs of phrasing and nuance, and brings an inimitable, gritty passion to everything she sings, even into her seventies. She s also not afraid to walk right down the middleof the road between secular and sacred, fully aware that both the blues and gospel are really talking about the same thing -- the need to get to a better place. She performs this delicate synthesis well on You Are Not Alone, an album that finds her teamed with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, whose production on this project is surprisingly sympathetic to Staples' strengths, and more importantly, doesn t make her sound like an adjunct participant in a Wilco album. No, this is Mavis' show, and she grabs ahold of well-chosen covers like Randy Newman's Losing You, Allen Toussaint's Last Train, Reverend GaryDavis' I Belong to the Band, and John Fogerty's Wrote a Song for Everyone with conviction, wringing every bit of wisdom, anger, compassion, and joy out of them, while bringing a fresh perspective to traditional gospel pieces like In ChristThere Is No East or West, Creep Along Moses, and Wonderful Savior, reminding that redemption is pretty hard work even in the best of times. She tackles a couple of Pops Staples pieces here, too, Don t Knock and Downward Road, making this whole set a well-rounded portrait of Mavis Staples as she stands then, now, and tomorrow. Tweedy wrote several songs for the project, but only one, the title track You Are Not Alone, appears here, and he wisely resisted any urge to overdo his sonic stamp on the album. Most tracks feature sturdy, simple, and subdued backing that allows Staples' voice to carry the show, highlighted by reverbed guitar reminiscent of PopsStaples' trademark sound, although only enough to sest it -- nothing here gets in the way of Mavis' voice. You Are Not Alone is a solid outing that somehow amazingly manages tobe both secular and sacred at once, and there is a stripped-down timelessness to it. It s gospel. It s blues. It s about love and redemption, and how each needs the other. - amazon.com
