V.A. - Preachin' The Blues - The Music Of Mississippi Fred McDowell (2002)

The best tribute to Fred McDowell is the many recordings he left behind. Arhoolie's The Best of Mississippi Fred McDowell and Capitol's I Do Not Play No Rock 'n' Roll are fantastic, but it's still fun to hear these interpretations of the 30-years-dead daddy of contemporary Mississippi hill country blues done by contemporary artists. Charlie Musselwhite zeroes in on McDowell's magic by swapping his trademark harp for guitar to play a spare, spirit-possessed "61 Highway." Paul Geremia nails the blaze of McDowell's slide for "Get Right Church," and Anders Osborne cops Fred's mumbling singing style in "Kokomo Blues." Although Colleen Sexton's vocal for "Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning" is overwrought, her band runs a nice arrangement similar to what Junior Kimbrough, one of McDowell's inheritors, might have done. Tab Benoit delivers an uncanny imitation of McDowell's guitar and vocal approach on "Train I Ride," and Austinite Sue Foley's dirty solo guitar-and-vocal treatment of "Frisco Line" may be the best thing she's ever recorded. The most interesting rendition is David Maxwell's solo piano instrumental take on "I Heard Somebody Call," which starts by abandoning everything but the naked fear and loneliness in the face of God's last judgment that McDowell gave his original. Although the rest of this disc is less inspiring, overall, it's a solid testimonial to the durability of McDowell's legacy. - amazon.com

PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS - Band On The Run (1973) [Original recording remastered, Special Edition, 2010]

"Band on the Run" should have been a disaster. Two of Wings' original members quit in a huff just before its production. The whimsical decision to record in Lagos, Nigeria, became a nightmare when McCartney and company found themselves in a decaying studio, then had many of the project's demos stolen by armed bandits. Despite these hardships -perhaps because of them--Band on the Run remains the most focused and consistently satisfying record of McCartney's wildly uneven post-Beatles career. "Band on the Run" triumphed both critically and commercially. The album topped the US album chart 3 separate times, won a Grammy and went on to sell more than 7 million copies. Upon the release of Band on the Run, then Rolling Stone reviewer Jon Landau famously gushed, "The finest record yet released by any of the four musicians who were once called The Beatles." “One Hand Clapping” was an unreleased documentary showing Paul and Wings at work at Abbey Road studios on August 15th, 1974, recording songs for a proposed live/studio album - amazon.com

V.A. - Come And Get It - The Best Of Apple Records (2010) [Remastered]

For the first time a collection of Apple’s Greatest Hits – well not exactly but pretty close. Actually, this 21-track CD serves as a great overview of the catalogue for those that only want that. To others it is hopefully a useful introduction to a label that achieved and enormous amount in a very short space of time. Some artists stayed the course, others disappeared as fast as they had arrived, some went on to better and bigger things having made a start at Apple. They all left an impression. Alongside Badfinger, James Taylor, Mary Hopkin, Billy Preston, Doris Troy, Jackie Lomax appear The Black Dyke Mills Band, Trash, Ronnie Spector, The Hot Chocolate Band, The Radha Krsna Temple (London), Chris Hodge, Sundown Playboys, Bill Elliot & The Elastic Oz Band and Lon and Derrek Van Eaton and the never-released-single by Brute Force.

DEVON ALLMAN'S HONEYTRIBE - Space Age Blues (2010)

By blending ’70s soul, Memphis R&B, and slinky minor-key grooves, Devon Allman has found a way to extend his family’s amazing musical lineage on his own terms. His gravelly voice may be reminiscent of his father, Gregg Allman, but the similarity ends there. (Musically, that is—the physical resemblance is unmistakable.) This Allman plays guitar with a high-gain edge and slashing tone that sests Gary Moore rather than uncle Duane. With his wailing harp, Huey Lewis lends a bluesy touch to the album’s opening track, but despite the title, Space Age Blues is more about vintage funk and psychedelic rock than blues. Elements of Free (especially Paul Kossoff’s fast, intense vibrato), Mountain, mid-’70s Stevie Wonder (Allman covers “Sir Duke”), and even Quicksilver Messenger Service swirl and coalesce in Allman’s music, yet he delivers these retro influences with a 21st-century flair. To paraphrase Billie Holiday, this child has got his own. - premierguitar.com

KIRSTEN THIEN - Delicious (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Kirsten Thien and Screen Door announce the release of her third album, Delicious. This album has eleven songs with three of them being covers in which she either wrote or co-wrote. Originally from Maine and now residing in New York City, Kirsten Thien comes to us in an up-tempo fashion with her latest work showing us just why she won the Abe Olman Award for Excellence in Songwriting in 2009. Kirsten Thien has been on the rise since 2001 and infuses her love for Aretha Franklin, traditional New Orleans jazz and the classic women blues singers of the 20’s into all her album releases. Erik Boyd not only produced and played bass on the album but arranged the band for each song so that it would blend the talents of the band that tours with the NYC session cats from her last 2006 recording. They also added veteran blues heavyweights, Arthur Neilson (guitar), Billy Gibson (harmonica) and Hubert Sumlin (guitar) with Grammy nominated mixing engineer Dan Myers.

GINA SICILIA thumbupthumbupthumbup

Only once in a great while an artist comes along with the power to cause jaws to drop in awe—ladies and and gentleman, meet Philadelphia's own musical own dynamo Gina Sicilia. Exposed to music early on by her music-loving family, Gina began singing at the age of 3 and wrote her first song at the tender age of 12. Upon hearing blues legend Bobby Bland for the first time at the age of 14, she became instantly enthralled by the raw emotion and power of blues & soul. After spending her teenage years polishing her vocal and songwriting skills, Gina began singing in clubs around the Philadelphia area, and has since branched out worldwide. As an artist who has been performing on the blues circuit for only a few short years, it is obvious to see that Gina's star is rising, and it is rising fast.

2007 - "Allow Me To Confess"
On Allow Me to Confess, her recording debut, 22-year old Gina Sicilia comes across as a young Etta James, both in the power of her voice and in her repertoire. Based in Philadelphia and more experienced than one would expect from someone at her young age, she performs blues, blues ballads, soul, and some 1960s-style R&B. While guitarist/producer Dave Gross gives some of the songs a 1950s jump blues feel, Sicilia sings a tune apiece from Big Maybelle, Esther Phillips, and Etta James, plus her own originals. Whether any of her songs will catch on as future R&B/blues standards is open to question, but certainly Gina Sicilia will be a force in this music for many years to come. - cduniverse.com
TRACKS:
01. That's A Pretty Good Love 02. I Ain't Crazy 03. Try Me 04. One Of Many 05. Pushover 06. Rest Of My Days 07. Allow Me To confess 08. You Set My Heart On Fire 09. There Lies A Better Day 10. That Much Further 11. When My Ship Comes In

2008 - "Hey Sugar"
On her second release on Swingnation Records, Hey Sugar, Sicilia manages to channel Nina Simone and Lena Horne by laying down incredibly smoky vocals over a seven-piece band featuring an updated version of Kansas City Blues. She is a superb talent that is getting even better with experience.... If you love female blues vocals done right, this is a CD you must add to your collection! - Steve Jones, Crossroads Blues Society
TRACKS:
01. Goin' Home Baby 02. So Attracted To You 03. Kissing In The Dark 04. I Pray Most Everyday 05. Jack & Jill 06. What The Moon Could Never Do 07. Bad Years Comin' On 08. Hey Sugar 09. Cherry Tree 10. Lowest Of The Low 11. Nobody's Darling But Mine 12. Coat Of Many Colors 13. Plain Apple Pie

DEEP PURPLE - Come Taste The Band (1975)- 35th Anniversary Edition (2010)

When Ritchie Blackmore departed Deep Purple in the mid-'70s and formed Rainbow (which featured Ronnie James Dio), his replacement was Tommy Bolin. To be sure, Blackmore was a darn tough act to follow, but Bolin proved himself to be a fine guitarist in his own right on Come Taste the Band, his first album with Deep Purple. But unfortunately, Bolin didn't have exceptional material to work with - decent and likable, but hardly exceptional. While sweaty yet melodic cuts like "Dealer," "Lady Luck," and "You Keep on Moving" are far from bad, nothing here is in a class with "Smoke on the Water" or "Highway Star." Deep Purple's more hardcore devotees will want this album, though it's far from the best representation of their '70s work. This is the final original studio album of the "EMI" period to be remastered and features the Mark IV line-up featuring David Coverdale, Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Glenn Hughes and Tommy Bolin. The CD features the original album remastered on CD 1 and the whole album remixed by Kevin Shirley (Iron Maiden production supremo) on CD 2 along with 2 previously unreleased tracks. - cduniverse.com

DAVE ALVIN & THE GUILTY WOMEN - Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women (2009)

Grammy winner, Dave Alvin, has been roaming the highways of American music for over a quarter century. During those decades he's busted speakers with roots rock kick-starters, The Blasters, as well as mined the depths of country, folk and blues with his solo projects. A mainstay during much of this journey has been Alvin's electrifying band The Guilty Men. Following the recent death of Dave's best friend and Guilty Men accordionist Chris Gaffney in early 2008, Alvin decided to move in an exciting new musical direction. In October 2008 he stepped onto the stage of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco with an all-star, all-female group. Since dubbed The Guilty Women, the group consists of Americana scene vets Cindy Cashdollar, Nina Gerber, Laurie Lewis, Sarah Brown, Amy Farris, Christy McWilson and Lisa Pankrantz. Special guests include Marcia Ball and Susie Thompson. The self-titled debut from this unique assemblage of players, led by Alvin, is a spirited collection of thoughtful yet dynamic tunes featuring world-class musicianship worthy of his now legendary pedigree. - amazon.com

BRYAN FERRY - Olympia (2010)

The legendary Bryan Ferry returns with his suave and sophisticated debut on Astralwerks Records, the brand new studio album Olympia (co-produced by Ferry and the legendary Rhett Davies). The album features musical contributions from Nile Rodgers, Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, Groove Armada, Scissor Sisters, Marcus Miller, Flea, Mani (Primal Scream, ex Stone Roses) and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. Olympia sees Bryan Ferry reunite on record with members of Roxy Music, including Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, and Andy Mackay. This is the first album to reunite them since Roxy Music's seminal album For Your Pleasure in 1973! Olympia is a masterpiece of prolific artistry, blending sultry, elegant lyrics with genius compositions by Ferry, Rhett Davies and innovative, contemporary musicians. The album features eight new songs, and Ferry's moving adaptation of Tim Buckley's "Song To the Siren", and the amazing version of Traffic's "No Face, No Name, No Number"; as well as collaborations with Scissor Sisters on "Heartache By Numbers" and "Shameless" with Groove Armada. This is quintessential Bryan Ferry at his suave, sophisticated best. - amazon.com

TIM ROBBINS AND THE ROGUES GALLERY BAND - Tim Robbins And The Rogues Gallery Band (2010)

2010 debut album from acclaimed actor and activist Tim Robbins and the Rogues Gallery Band. Robbins has long written songs and performed in small venues, but has kept it under the radar...until now. Joining forces with his friend, the legendary producer Hal Willner, Tim Robbins And The Rogues Gallery Band is a nine track collection of raggle taggle and rousing gypsy Americana, where each song is a story, every one told with passion and raw emotional honesty. 'I was thinking of actually calling it the midlife crisis album, but then I thought maybe not!', the man claimed with a touch of humor. The nine Robbins originals gathered here aren’t bad – rarely actually good, but competent, occasionally engaging. There will be those who ransack them in search of clues about the end of Robbins’ relationship with Susan Sarandon. It’s a strength and weakness of the album that it yields little revelation about its creator, beyond the fact that he’s a really big fan of Bruce Springsteen. Opening cut Book of Josie visits Philadelphia via Nebraska; Toledo Girl aspires to the company of Springsteen’s sepulchral road ballads; and Lightning Calls an attempt at the cockeyed optimism of Tunnel of Love. - amazon.com

Grammy-winners Huey Lewis and The News' Soulsville is their first album in nine years. Recorded at historic Ardent Studios in Memphis, the album features 14 classic songs from the vault of Stax Records, including "Respect Yourself" and "Got To Get You Off My Mind". Considered to be the preeminent soul music label in America, Stax produced an astounding number of hit records throughout the 1960's & 70's. Ably paying tribute to the rich Stax legacy, Huey Lewis & The News, joined by their long time horn section, capture the energy and excitement of this important era. Soulsville re-unites Huey Lewis & The News with co-producer Jim Gaines ("Sports", "Fore!") who worked at the Stax studios (home to artists like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T & The MG's, and Isaac Hayes) as a young man and was involved in many of the label's original recordings. - amazon.com

V.A. - A Salute To The Blues - Lightning In A Bottle (2004)

Lightning in a Bottle is the double-disc soundtrack to the documentary film of the same title directed by Antoine Fuqua and shot at a February 7, 2003, concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Billed as a "Salute to the Blues," the show featured veteran blues musicians as well as a younger generation of players and artists either directly working in the genre or deeply influenced by it, and the running order follows the evolution of blues from Africa, up the Mississippi, and through Chicago and beyond. With a crack house band of Steve Jordan and/or Levon Helm on drums, Dr. John on piano, Willie Weeks on bass, and Danny Kortchmar on guitar, Lightning in a Bottle has quite a few high points, including Macy Gray's version of Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog," Bonnie Raitt's "Coming Home," and the deep Southern gospel soul of Solomon Burke on "Turn On Your Love Light." Also impressive is David "Honeyboy" Edwards' stark and haunting solo acoustic rendering of "Gamblin' Man." Mavis Staples arguably stole the show, however, with her huge, shuffling, and ominous take on Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean." The shifts and mutations of the blues from an acoustic music to an electric one are traced, ending in Chuck D and the Fine Art Militia's thundering rap version of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom." The CD set lacks some of the music actually performed in the film, however, so the best way to catch this moving concert in its entirety is on DVD, which also includes backstage footage and interviews. ~ cduniverse.com

2010 album from the legendary Blues guitarist. Featuring guest appearances from B.B. King and Carlos Santana. Save for a cover of Muddy Waters' "Country Boy," Buddy Guy's "Living Proof" follows the template of 2008's "Skin Deep" by featuring only original material penned by Guy, although never fear, it's still the blues and it's still full of Guy's fiery guitar playing.

THE SIEGEL-SCHWALL BAND - Say Siegel-Schwall & Siegel-Schwall '70 (2001)

Paul Butterfield and Elvin Bishop were not the only white dudes who formed a blues band in Chicago in the early '60s. Siegel and Jim Schwall formed the Siegel-Schwall Band in the mid-'60s in Chicago and worked as a duo playing blues clubs like Pepper's Lounge, where they were the house band. All of the great blues players would sit in - all the time. Corky Siegel played harp and electric Wurlizter piano, with an abbreviated drum set stashed under the piano; Jim Schwall played guitar and mandolin. Both sang.

1967 - "Say Siegel-Schwall"
For all parties concerned, this was the group's breakthrough album. Corky Siegel's emotional harp work and foxy, sly (almost cutesy) vocals, coupled with a hot rhythm section and Jim Schwall's cardboard sounding acoustic with a pickup guitar work made this the one that connected big with White audiences. Some of it rocks, some of it boogies, some of it's downright creepy and eerie. Worth seeking out.

1970 - Siegel-Schwall '70
The group's fourth album, and their final one for Vanguard, showed them mildly progressing within the strictures of the blues format, although in large measure this was more of the same second-division white Chicago blues. There were some slight funk and soul influences in tunes like "Geronimo" and "Walk in My Mind," the latter of which has a psychedelic tinge both to the spacy lyrics and the wavering wordless vocal-harmonica effects heard at the end of the verses. The two live cuts, particularly "Angel Food Cake," captured their jittery take on the blues better than any of their Vanguard studio recordings. The most unusual offering, however, is "Song," which breaks out of the usual blues format with a gentle, hippyish rock ballad not far from the territory of the early work of Vanguard labelmates Country Joe & the Fish, complete with inventive electric piano. Far from being a failed departure, that cut's actually a highlight of this uneven set, which is weighed down by some pedestrian 12-bar blues.

Say Siegel-Schwall:

01. I'm A King Bee
02. Slow Blues in A
03. I.S.P.I. Blues
04. Bring It With You, When You Come
05. My Baby Thinks I Don't Love Her
06. That's Why I Trteat My Baby So Fine
07. I Liked It Where We Walked
08. I Don't Want You To Be My Girl
Siegel-Schwall '70:
09. Do You Remember
10. Geronimo
11. Angel Food Cake
12. Walk In My Mind
13. Song
14. Tell Me
15. A Sunshine Day In My Mind

ROBIN ROGERS - Back In The Fire (2010)thumbupthumbupthumbup

11. What We Are Worth

I don't know how many of you have heard, or heard of, Robin Rogers. She went national with her first Blind Pig CD, "Treat Me Right," a scorching album full of her lusty vocals and sensual stylings. Rogers path to music and the blues hasn't been easy. From runaway teen to street singer, she worked in Florida for a while, then wound up in North Carolina in the 90s, where she hooked up with the Charlotte Blues Society. She started to record and tour, and signed with Blind Pig in 2008, where she released "Treat Me Right." Her second Blind Pig album, out today, is "Back in the Fire," and it's more of the same - even better, if that's possible. Rogers has a voice that will break your heart with the blues, even if you don't think you have one. She's a soulful, bluesy, torchy singer who works a lyric with painful feelings of sorrow and joy. And she plays a moaning, mournful harp. It's wonderful. - community.post-gazette.com

BLACK SABBATH - Under Wheels of Confusion 1970-1987 (1996) [Digitally Remastered]

An unwieldy four-disc, 52-track box set, Under Wheels of Confusion: 1970-1987 nevertheless contains the bulk of Black Sabbath's best work, dipping considerably in quality during the second half of the set, when Ozzy Osbourne left the group and was replaced by Ronnie James Dio. Even though all of the stone-cold classics are here, as are all of Dio's best tracks, Sabbath remains best appreciated through their original albums, which capture the essence of the metal giants much better than this box. It is a four-disc set, all digitally remastered.

Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne, Ronnie James Dio, Glenn Hughes, Tony Martin (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); John Elstar (harmonica); Geoff Nichols, Don Airey, Gerald Woodruffe (keyboards); Bob Daisley, Gordon Copley, Dave Spitz, Geezer Butler (bass); Bill Ward, Vinny Appice (drums); Bev Bevan (percussion).

CHRISTY MOORE - Live In Dublin 2006 (2006)

The older brother of Irish folk-pop singer-songwriter Luka Bloom (Barry Moore), Christy Moore is one of contemporary Irish music's best singer-songwriters. The former lead vocalist and chief songwriter of Planxty and Moving Hearts, Moore helped to bring the musical traditions of Ireland up to modern standards. As a solo singer-songwriter, Moore has continued to add elements of rock and popular music to his well-crafted, tradition-based tunes and has been a major inspiration to such modern Irish artists as U2, Sinead O'Connor and the Pogues. In 2007, he was named as Ireland's greatest living musician in RTÉ's People of the Year Awards. This two-CD set contains music from concerts at the Point Depot in Dublin on 29 December 2005, 30 December 2005, 5 January 2006, and 6 January 2006. The album features Declan Sinnott on guitar. It captures perfectly the atmosphere and intimacy of a Christy Moore concert. Old jewels combined with his beautiful new stuff proves that he still has what it takes to be considered as one of the best performers of all times. 35 songs of pure magic. - answers.com

BOB DYLAN - The Best of The Original Mono Recordings (2010)

01. Song To Woody
02. Blowin' In The Wind
03. The Times They Are A Changin'
04. Chimes of Freedom
05. It Ain't Me Babe
06. Subterranean Homesick Blues

11. Rainy Day Women #12 & #35
12. Just Like A Woman
13. I Want You
14. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight
15. All Along The Watchtower

"The Best of the Original Mono Recordings" is a single-disc distillation of 2010’s nine-disc box The Original Mono Recordings, picking 14 tracks from the eight albums on the box and adding the non-LP single “Positively 4th Street.” The inclusion of this 1965 Top Ten hit makes this disc enticing to collectors, although it does sest that the box would benefit from a brief bonus disc of singles containing that song, “Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window,” “If You Gotta Go, Go Now,” and “Mixed-Up Confusion.” But this disc is intended to be nothing more than a sampler hinting at the treasures within the big box. And as a sampler, this works very well, rounding up the Dylan songs everybody knows - “Blowin’ in the Wind," “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” “Chimes of Freedom,” “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,” “I Want You,” “All Along the Watchtower” - which helps illustrate the subtle differences between stereo and mono and, in the process, will help the curious decide if they want to jump into the big set. And if they don’t, they will at least have a terrifically entertaining little collection in their possession. - allmusic.com

HENRIK FREISCHLADER BAND - The Blues (2006)

Henrik Freischlader has carved out in 3 years with over 500 concerts and 3 successful CDs his place at the top of the blues scene. Some music critics predicted at the beginning of his career, Henrik is now exactly where he always wanted to be! Blues with language as a living form of the expression of pain and sorrow, anger and rage, humor and joy, which the loyal and appreciative audience will be given again and again, look at the virtuosity of his seemingly limitless musical possibilities. Numerous performances with legends such as Blue Peter Green, Johnny Winter and Joe Bonamassa have Henrik Freischlader presented to a large audience, but there were also performances in front of a modest number of viewers who could be enormous, dense and intense, when the spark jumped over Blues was. Curious No wonder then that the spark has been further supported, and the status of the insider more blues fans beyond Germany’s. He has now earned a loyal audience in France, Poland, Luxembourg, Austria and Switzerland. The questions are piling up, and one can only wonder where you will see Henrik Freischlader and his band in the future, everywhere and hear.

STEPHEN STILLS - Man Alive! (2005)

While Man Alive! may not be the quintessential Stephen Stills album, the venerable singer-songwriter nevertheless enters his sixth decade with passion and fire. Stills has always done his best, most convincing work on the acoustic guitar, and the wood-and-steel material here proves no exception. On "Different Man" (with Neil Young) and "Piece of Me," he draws on his southern roots and demonstrates his uncanny knack for soulful blues. That soulfulness carries over to much of the electric material, whether the danceable, B-3-driven "Around Us," the achingly good "Ole Man Trouble," or the Zydeco-inflected "Acadienne," on which Stills sounds positively loose and unusually comfortable. Some material doesn't work as well – "Drivin' Thunder" (cowritten with Young) suffers from production that's more in tune with 1985 than 2005, and neither "Round the Bend" nor "I Don't Get It" shines with the full-blown brilliance that the artist clearly remains capable of. Still, this sometimes-flawed endeavor is a more-than-welcome return from one of rock's great, underrepresented treasures. - amazon.com

FISTUL OF MERCY - As I Call You Down (2010)

20101 debut from this trio featuring Ben Harper, Dhani Harrison (George's son) and Joseph Arthur. The trio formed in early 2010 and wasted little time before laying down tracks for what would become As I Call You Down. Ben Harper is no stranger to the music world. Having met FOM band-mate Dhani Harrison while skating, the two were unaware of each other's background in the industry for months. Once realized, collaborating seemed to make perfect sense and thus Fistful Of Mercy was formed instantly. Written, produced and recorded in Harper's studio, As I Call You Down is comprised of nine songs complete with soulful harmonies and blues-infused folk guitar seamlessly blended with an indie rock backbone. As I Call You Down effortlessly crosses through genre defining borders and is sure to please fans of both Ben Harper and Dhani Harrison's previous work, while welcoming new listeners with open arms. - amazon.com

MARY LEE'S CORVETTE - Blood On The Tracks (2002)

Singer-songwriter Mary Lee Kortes decided to tackle Bob Dylan's masterpiece of romantic disillusionment and wanderlust on a whim when she learned that the New York nightclub Arlene's Grocery needed someone to cover the 1975 classic for one of its Classic Album Nights. The experiment in channeling rock's greatest bard was so otherworldly for Kortes and her band Mary Lee's Corvette that they've now released this impassioned and athletic homage to Blood on the Tracks on CD. While it's tempting to compare this disc to Exile in Guyville, Liz Phair's retort to the Rolling Stones's Exile on Main Street, this is much more a mash note to the great man than a rejoinder. Kortes's strong, sinewy voice careens artfully through the 10 songs, as if she were a medium tapping into Dylan's mind, perfectly mimicking his cadence and idiosyncratic phrasing without entirely losing herself in the process. While no shrinking violet, Kortes does succeed in bringing a woman's vision to the collection, if only between the lines (she makes no attempt to change the gender in the lyrics). But Kortes inhabits a song like "Buckets of Rain" completely, giving it a guileless innocence that Dylan could never have anticipated. - amazon.com

Rory Gallagher was the most frequent visitor to Beat Club having appeared four times over the course of two years, once with his band Taste and three times after playing his solo works. This CD covers three of those appearances from Rory Gallagher. The Beat Club Sessions shows what Rory Gallagher was really all about a magnificent live performer. The tracklisting focuses on his first two solo albums and contains many classic songs that would carry on playing throughout his career.

THE BEATLES - "Red Album" & "Blue Album" - 2010 Remasters

- "1962-1966" - Red (1973) [Remastered 2010]
This superb compilation, often called "the red album," brings together the majority of the Beatles' hits from the early to mid '60s. Consequently, it plays like an overview of the some of the most popular and indelible rock songs of all time. From the "yeah, yeah, yeah"'s of "She Loves You" through the amped-up giddiness of "I Want to Hold Your Hand," the minor-key melodicism of "And I Love Her," and on to the chiming power pop of "Eight Days a Week" and the tweaky feedback of "I Feel Fine," these are the songs that turned the entire Western world on its ear. The second half of the set - in addition to its phenomenal songs - is interesting in that it charts the Beatles' move from straightforward pop toward the new chapter of rock the band would help script in the late '60s. After the expansive chords and slinky melodies of "Ticket to Ride," the band becomes alternately darkly introspective ("Yesterday") and looser and more groove-obsessed ("Drive My Car"), while trying on allegorical Dylan-inspired narratives ("Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)"), and happy-go-luck psychedelia ("Yellow Submarine"). - cduniverse.com
DISC 1: 01. Love Me Do 02. Please Please Me 03. From Me To You 04. She Loves You 05. I Want To Hold Your Hand 06. All My Loving 07. Can't Buy Me Love 80. Hard Day's Night 09. And I Love Her 10. Eight Days A Week 11. I Feel Fine 12. Ticket To Ride 13. Yesterday

- "1967-1970" - Blue (1973) [Remastered 2010]
The companion piece to the 1962-1966 singles compilation, this set (often called "the blue album," as opposed to its chronological predecessor "the red album"), brings together the Beatles best known songs from 1967 through 1970. The Beatles were fiercely, relentlessly experimental during these years, and the swirling, visionary soundscapes of "Strawberry Fields Forever," which opens the collection, sets the tone with its effects-heavy production and backward tape loops. John Lennon's psychedelic songwriting, which emphasized crystalline melodies and sureall wordplay, can be heard on tracks like "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" and "Across the Universe." Paul McCartney's fascination with English music hall and novelty numbers is clear on "Penny Lane" and "Ob-la-Di, Ob-la-Da," and the set also has some of his finest ballads, including the mega-hits "Let It Be" and "Hey Jude." George Harrison emerged as a fine songwriting talent during these years with "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun." Yet despite evidence of their diverging individual directions, the Beatles still rock as a band on cuts like "Revolution." (The set includes the single versions of "Revolution," "Lady Madonna," and "Hey Jude"). - cduniverse.com

Though an illness nearly kept Kenny from performing that night, his heartfelt commitment to the music (and quite a lot of adrenaline) ensured that he took the stage, sharing with the audience one of the most spectacular performances of his career, and one that fans can now hear on this release.

Four Grammy nominations, two Billboard Music Awards and millions of albums later, life came full circle when Shepherd and his band assembled several generations worth of blues legends, including Lee, at the House Of Blues in Chicago, captured for posterity on the brand new 'Live In Chicago' album. - amazon.com

EDEN BRENT - Something Cool (2003)

For listeners who have never heard "Boogaloo" Ames, Brent sests her album's take on "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water." "There's a right-hand lick in the middle of the piano solo that is something Boogaloo taught me note for note. I have added something to it over time, but the original idea is note for note Boogaloo." Her death-row interpretation of "Send Me to the 'lectric Chair" would give Judge Judy cause to rethink this sentence. Brent is also a proficient songwriter. "Ain't Gonna Be Your Lonely Fool" and "We've Already Said Goodbye" will appeal to Pop fans, while "I Can't Seem To Lose This Memory" and "Simple Geometry" tend more toward Jazz. "South Africa," the jewel of her originals, is a vivid tribute to the nation she toured after Ames' death in 2003. Brent's take on Bessie Smith's "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" reveals the depth of her spiritual ties to the music of Ames' generation. Throughout the album, Brent artfully tackles the complex human emotions contained within these American musical standards. This is one voice that should be around the Blues world for years to come. - BluesWax.com

BAKER GURVITZ ARMY - Still Alive (2008)

The Baker Gurvitz Army was started in England (?) in October 1974. For all those folks who had been wondering if/when Ginger Baker would return to a rock style drumming/music similar to what he had been doing with Cream and Blind Faith, this was the answer. Ginger Baker joined together with Adrian Gurvirtz (Adrian Curtis) and Paul Gurvitz (Paul Curtis) for his return to rock. The band also included various keyboard players and a vocalist. Unfortunately, the band only lasted three years, and only produced three albums.

This 2 CD set is taken directly from the masters, recordings of the band at their best during their 1975-76 tour. The thunderous drums of Ginger Baker, and the wall crumbling power of the Gurvitz Brothers make these must have CDs!

NICK GARRIE - The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas - 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (2010)

One of the most mysterious and sought after albums ever...a masterpiece of dark and enigmatic downer orchestral folk-rock. A languid, orchestral post-psychedelic treat, it's equal parts UK baroque-downer pop/folk, with echoes of Peter Sarstedt and Al Stewart. Nick Garrie's rare pop-psychedelic album is reminiscent of the sunniest and frothiest such British music of the late '60s. In its match of pretty melodies and overtly romantic lyrics with Baroque pop production, it calls to mind the U.K. '60s band Nirvana in some respects, and perhaps fellow youthful singer/songwriter Billy Nicholls. In gutsier moments, you might also think of the very early Badfinger (or the Iveys, the band that evolved into Badfinger) or Thunderclap Newman. Though his tunes are pretty, they can also veer toward blandness, and his vocals are callow and uncertain enough to make one wonder whether his compositions might have been better served by other singers. Some ill-advised forays into country-influenced material are the album's low points, but those are uncharacteristic. Most of the record is lite pop-psych with a definite Continental flavor, tinged with bittersweetness but never melancholic, evoking pictures of a sensitive late-19th century heir riding in a carriage over cobblestoned streets with top hat and petticoated girl beside him.

Digitally remastered and expanded 40th Anniversary edition of this 1970 Psych-Pop classic album from the British singer/songwriter. Features the original album's 12 tracks plus an additional 17 tracks including non-album cuts and demos.

DION - Heroes: Giants Of Early Guitar Rock (2008)

Dion Francis DiMucci, better known as Dion, is an American singer-songwriter whose work has incorporated elements of doo-wop, pop, rock and R&B styles. One of the most popular American rock and roll performers of the pre-British Invasion era, Dion had over a dozen top 40 hits in the late 1950s and early 60s. He's best remembered for the exuberant 1961 singles "Runaround Sue", a #1 hit about a two-timing woman, and "The Wanderer", a #2 hit about a philandering man that was, somewhat accidentally, an answer song to "Runaround Sue". Due to changing public tastes and personal problems, Dion's success faltered in the mid-1960s, eventually regaining some popularity in the early 1970s with more mature and contemplative songs such as "Abraham, Martin & John". He has continued making music to the present, earning reappraisals from critics who earlier dismissed him as a teen idol.

In October 2008, he released "Heroes: Giants of Early Guitar Rock", an album of his covers of early rock and roll songs he considers seminal to the genre. The album includes versions of songs originally recorded by Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Ricky Nelson, Johnny Cash and many other early rock guitarists. - wikipedia

FRANK MARINO & MAHOGANY RUSH - Eye Of The Storm (2000)

01. Storm Warning...
02. Eye Of The Storm
03. He's Calling
04. Learned My Lesson Well
05. Heat Of The Moment
06. Window To The World
07. Since You Came Into My Life
08. Avalon
09. Ordinary Man

There were two predominant views of Frank Marino in the '70s. The first was that he fit into the guitar hero group of such people as Pat Travers, Ted Nugent, and Robin Trower. The second was that he was a bit of a Jimi Hendrix clone. Well, 2001 sees Marino releasing Eye of the Storm with his longtime group Mahogany Rush. It also shows that the guitar hero title still fits, although perhaps the guitar heroes of today differ from those of the '70s. Marino's sound certainly fits into his era more than the 2000s, but that does not stop him from producing a killer album. His guitar textures are not too flashy, but very tasteful. As to the Hendrix reference, those influences can be heard on occasion, but really Marino has his own sound. This release is a very strong rock album that even touches on sounds as far away from Hendrix as ELP and Tomita. In fact, the first cut on the piece, an instrumental introduction sort of number, really seems to blend the sound of both of those groups in an arrangement that feels a bit like a take on Mars, from Holtz' The Planets. Marino is back, and back in style. - allmusic.com

RONNIE EARL - Language Of The Soul (1994)

01. Eddie's Gospel Groove
02. Beautiful Child

04. Blues For Martin Luther King
05. Harvard Square Stomp
06. Barcelona Morning
07. I Am With You
08. Green Light
09. Through Floods And Storms
10. Blue Guitar
11. Bill's Blues

Language of the Soul is a wonderful change of pace for guitarist Ronnie Earl. The record is the first all-instrumental album Earl has recorded and, if anything, it's even more successful than his full-fledged, band-oriented records. Working without vocals has given him the freedom to try all sorts of new things, whether it's the jazzy interludes of "Indigo Burrell" or the gospel-flavored "I Am With You." Earl's compositions aren't memorable in and of themselves (he wrote all but two of the cuts), yet they give him the opportunity to play freely. He comes up with some truly remarkable solo passages, offering definitive proof that he's one of the best contemporary blues guitarists of the '90s. ~ All Music Guide

Steve Lukather is a legend in the guitar community, obviously he is best known for being the guitarist in American rock band Toto founded in 1977 and although they broke up in 2008 they reformed in 2010 for a tour of Europe. That is a pretty epic career in itself but Steve Lukather is just as well known, at least by guitarists, for his session work playing on records such as Michael Jackon’s “Beat It” and “Human Nature”, Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical”, Lionel Richie, George Benson… the list goes on and on. Steve also sang backing vocals on three new songs on Van Halen’s “The Best Of Both Worlds” compilation. As well as Steve’s work with Toto and session work he has also release five solo albums over the years Lukather (1989), Candyman (1994), Luke (1997), Santamental (2003), and Ever Changing Times (2008). “All’s Well That End’s Well” is his sixth solo record and features Steve on vocal duty as well as guitar for this record with help from Fee Waybill, Joseph Williams and Bernard Fowler who contribute backing vocals.

KASEY CHAMBERS - The Captain & Special Bonus Edition (1999 - 2000)

1999 - "The Captain"
In "Southern Kind of Life," a song on her debut album, The Captain, Kasey Chambers convincingly describes a rural Southern upbringing, poverty stricken and Bible dominated - and since she performs in a style associated with the Appalachians as developed into commercial country music, it's easy to assume she's singing about the American South. But she isn't; she's singing about the Nullarbor Plain in south-central Australia, where she grew up, apparently listening to a lot of country records. The result is a style that will remind some listeners of Dolly Parton and others of Lucinda Williams, as Chambers, backed by her father and produced by her brother, both of them members of the family's Dead Ringer Band, sings in a breathy voice that breaks expressively. Her tunes tend to be either "I am" songs of self-description like "Southern Kind of Life" and "Cry Like a Baby," accounts of romantic difficulties, or celebrations of life on the road. Though she has a gift for wordplay that favors internal rhyme, her imagery can be trite ("You got the car and I got the break"), and her compositions are less interesting in themselves than in the performances she gives them. Like many young artists, she is still a compendium of her influences rather than a distinct figure unto herself, but The Captain is a sincere effort steeped in the kind of country/folk/rock style that made Lucinda Williams a critical success in the late '90s, and it is likely to attract similar attention. - cduniverse.com

2000 - "The Captain - Special Bonus Edition"
Kasey Chambers may not be a well known musician in the United States, but Australia appreciates her. She's won numerous awards for her music including ARIAs for Best Female Artist three times and Best Country Album three times. She's had three #1 albums and a slew of top 40 hits in Australia as well. Each of her albums has achieved platinum or multi-platinum status there as well. But in the US, her highest chart position (and the only one I could find) was #104 for her album Barricades and Brickwalls. Just goes to show how tastes can vary between continents, I suppose. I really must be on the wrong continent. In 1999 Kasey released her first solo album, The Captain. A friend of mine bought the album in 2000, when it was released in the US, without knowing who she was or hearing any of it. He didn't like it and he passed it on to me. This, ladies and gentlemen, is where my love for twangy music and twangy voices began. Honestly, I had never heard any non-lame country music before this point in my life. I didn't know that country music could be anything but lame before I heard Kasey Chambers. And now the majority of my favorite musicians are country/rock/americana (call it whatever genre you want) artists. Funny how one album can shape the future of your musical interests. I can't imagine how my cd collection would look today if I had never been given The Captain. I found out a few years later that The Captain had been released with a limited edition bonus cd with seven more songs. One an original song by Kasey, 5 covers, and 1 duet with and written by Paul Kelly. The parentheses denote who originally recorded the song.

"Dear Friends,

This is a difficult time in the world, and I would like to ask each of you to find ways to be a part of positive solutions. There is something that each of us can do, and it's just a matter of searching your own soul to find the way that you can give to others. Some of us can give of our time and talent, and some of us can donate money or items. The trick is to give without looking to receive - to give of yourself to your family, your friends, your community, and the world community with love. I thank you... please continue to pray with me for peace."

Love, Solomon

JOHN LENNON - Gimme Some Truth (2010)

Much grander than the single-disc Power to the People but not nearly as lavish as the 11-disc Signature Box, the four-disc Gimme Some Truth is the middle ground of Apple/EMI's 2010 John Lennon reissue series: a collection of four thematic collections offered at a reasonable price. Breaking any artist's work into themes is tricky, but the topics here are broad enough to give the compilers some wiggle room: Working Class Hero contains Lennon's protest songs, Woman his songs of love and women ("Mother" and "My Mummy's Dead" don't quite qualify as romantic tunes, after all), Borrowed Time features songs about "life," and his rock & roll numbers are presented on a disc called Roots, oddly sharing its title with the controversial original unofficial release of Rock 'n' Roll. Some of the selected songs may not quite fit the themes but the 72 cuts here contain much of Lennon's solo best, making this a good thorough overview for those who need more than the hits but don't want to invest in full albums. It's at a very nice price point, too. - cduniverse.com

JAN AKKERMAN - Puccini's Cafe (1993)

After leaving Focus in 1976, Akkerman began releasing a stream of solo albums, which frequently embraced classical, jazz, and blues, and started leading his own bands. Much of his work during the 1980s wasn't released officially outside of Holland, but his periodic recordings with Van Leer, coupled with efforts to revive Focus with its two major stars, kept his name circulating in international music circles. The only problem that Akkerman faces derives from the sheer eclecticism of his work, which makes him very difficult to categorize - two different branches of Tower Records in the same city listed him as a jazz and a rock artist, respectively, but one could just as easily make a claim for him as a classical artist. "Puccini's Cafe" is otherwise the real article as far as its creative classicism - the 8.56-minute-long "Love is uneven" comes close to being pretentious without quite crossing the line, and all of the album is a fascinating solo departure for the guitarist. Recorded at EMI Records' studios in Holland and released in 1993, when Focus was far the peak of its fame, Puccini's Cafe sold reasonably well at the time, but had been unavailable from the late '90s until 2002, when reissued it in a good-sounding CD edition.

TRACKS:
01. Burger’s Blues 02. Your Eyes In The Whiskey 03. Spanish Roads 04. Key To The Highway 05. It Comes And Goes 06. Albatross 07. Blue Train 08. Love Is Uneven 09. Puccini’s Cafe

LIZZ WRIGHT - Fellowship (2010)

The 12-track gospel-tinged record features a number of traditional songs long held sacred by Wright alongside originals by guest performers Angelique Kidjo, Me'Shell Ndegéocello, Joan as Policewoman and social activist and songwriter Dr. Bernice Reagon, among others. Produced by Brian Bacchus, Fellowship is the follow-up to Wright's 2008 record The Orchard, which "CBS News Sunday Morning" declared "one of the best albums of the year" while the Los Angeles Times called it "a creative breakthrough for Wright, whose smoldering, sensual voice now has a vision to go with it." Fellowship continues Wright's celebrated collaboration with acclaimed singer-songwriter Toshi Reagon, who co-produced the new album and wrote/performed on a number of tracks on Wright's previous release. The record features several traditional songs that Wright grew up with in church including "Amazing Grace," "Sweeping Through the City," and a gospel medley featuring "I've Got a Feeling" and "Power Lord." Wright also covers a number of songs by noted writers including "Presence of the Lord" by Eric Clapton and "In From the Storm" by Jimi Hendrix. Dr. Bernice Reagon performs on two tracks, including "I Remember, I Believe" which she composed. Lizz Wright, whom The Wall Street Journal calls "a thoughtful, sensitive soul," has received critical praise from Time Magazine, NPR, Ebony, Essence, New Yorker and Billboard, and her music is featured in several major television shows. Wright was born in the small town of Hahira, Georgia, to a local minister. She grew up traveling through the South singing with her parents and siblings. She first came to national attention in 2002 when she performed in a series of Billie Holiday tribute shows. Since then, she's released Salt (2003), Dreaming Wide Awake (2005) and The Orchard (2008), all three critical and fan favorites. - amazon.com

LIZZ WRIGHT - The Orchard (2008) thumbupthumbupthumbup

It doesn't matter whether you call Lizz Wright a Soul singer, a Jazz vocalist a Blues crooner, or anything else, because the fact of the matter is that she's an artist that defies true categorization. And on her brilliant third album, "The Orchard", which was released 2008, she shows and proves that she can master all the above music genres and then some. "The Orchard" is a beautifully serene collection of mature, personal, and sometimes spiritual, songs that serve to cement her standing as one of the more versatile and talented artists in contemporary music today, even if she's not one of the most well known. Who else but the great Lizz Wright could cover decades-old songs by Ike & Tina Turner and Led Zeppelin on the same LP and make both sound like brand-new compositions written specially for the album? Lizz's versions of Ike & Tina's "I Idolize You" and Led Zep's "Thank You" are bold and beautiful and pay tribute to the originals while at the same time sounding fresh and different from them. However, the two remakes are just the tip of the iceberg on an album filled with moving, personal songs. The Orchard leads off with the somber, mournful "Coming Home," in which Lizz sings about "Coming home for tomorrow, from my dreams of yesterday."

TRACKS:
01. Coming Home 02. My Heart 03. I Idolize You 04. Hey Mann 05. Another Angel 06. When I Fall 07. Leave Me Standhing Alone 08. Speak Your Heart 09. This Is 10. Song For Mia 11. Thank You 12. Strange [bonus track] 13. It Makes No Difference [exclusive bonus track]

BONNIE BRAMLETT - Beautiful (2008)

The voice, the sultriness, the punchy rhythms, and the sassiness are still there for all to hear on this disc. Delaney isn't. However, there is plenty of soul and grit to hang the vocals on. The supporting musicians gathered by producer Johnny Sandlin have that southern soul sound down which is to be expected of a band that include such stalwarts of the Muscle Shoals scene as Spooner Oldham, Bill Stewart, James Pennebaker, Tommy Talton, David Hood, as well as Randall Bramlett, and Bekka Bramlett (Bonnie and Delaney's daughter). And the voice of Bonnie Bramlett, the only white Ikette ever in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, is still the voice that wraps around you, enfolds you, and communicates with such intense feelings no matter what the tempo of the song. This disc is a mélange of good songwriting with a very diverse group of songs; from Stephen Stills classic, For What Its Worth, to Billy Joe Shaver's, I Do Believe, to the Randall Bramblett penned, Shake Something Loose, which is a Stones style rocker. Then there is her duet with her daughter, on a tune Bekka wrote with Gary Nicholson, and is very reminiscent of the music of Delaney and Bonnie. This is a disc that has a long sustained sizzle and a life that is gained from the strength and steel of the players. Perhaps her strongest, most heartfelt singing is on Steve Conn's, Beautiful, which just has that truth imbedded in it. - acousticmusic.com

...Gotthard Singer Steve Lee Dies In Motorcycle Accident ...

A motorcycle accident in the United States has claimed the life of Gotthard singer Steve Lee. A close friend of Steve Lee confirmed the terrible news to Blick.ch that the Gotthard singer is dead. In a motorcycle accident near San Francisco the 47-year-old died. According to media reports, he was struck by a truck.

Gotthard, a Swiss hard rock band that sings in English, are one of the most successful musical acts ever to arise from Switzerland. Gotthard sold over two million albums worldwide, one million of them sold in Switzerland alone (a country of less than eight million inhabitants, keep in mind), as practically all of the band's albums were Swiss chart-toppers. Gotthard were also popular in Germany, where the band's albums regularly charted. Formed in Lugano, a town in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino in the far south of Switzerland, the band was initially named Krak and was comprised of vocalist Steve Lee, guitarist Leo Leoni, bassist Marc Lynn, and drummer Hena Habegger. Under the guidance of Krokus bassist/songwriter/founder Chris von Rohr, the band changed its name to Gotthard (a name derived from Saint Gotthard, a Roman Catholic saint after which the well-known St. Gotthard Pass in Switzerland was named) and signed a recording contract with BMG.With von Rohr at the helm as their producer and co-songwriter, the band went about recording its debut, Gotthard (1992). In addition to von Rohr, Lee and Leoni were the primary songwriters, and Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell played on two songs ("Firedance," "Get Down"). Gotthard spawned a pair of MTV-aired videos ("Hush," "All I Care For") and spent 15 weeks on the Swiss chart, peaking at number five and ultimately earning platinum status. After some international touring, Gotthard returned to the studio with von Rohr once again at the helm as producer/co-songwriter, resulting in Dial Hard (1994), the band's second album. Even more successful than Gotthard, Dial Hard spent several weeks at number one in Switzerland, charted in Germany and Japan, and ultimately went platinum, thanks in part to MTV-aired videos for "Mountain Mama" and "I'm on My Way."

In 1995, the band and von Rohr traveled to Los Angeles to record a follow-up album, G. (1996), whose release was preceded by the single "Father Is That Enough?" A chart-topper in Switzerland and Top 50 in Germany, G. was promoted with a sold-out Swiss tour, a 20-date German tour, and a Japanese tour as well. Mandy Meyer, onetime guitarist for Asia (Astra, 1985), joined the band membership at this point. (He later left in 2004 and was replaced by Freddy Scherer.) Gotthard's popularity continued unabated in the wake of G., which might have been the band's moment of peak popularity. D-Frosted (1997), a live unpled album, and Open (1999), a standard studio effort, each spent five weeks atop the Swiss album chart. Gotthard were touring throughout Europe at this point, and in 2000 they enjoyed their first number one single, "Heaven." Successive album releases continued to hit number one in Switzerland while charting respectably in Germany: Homerun (2001), the ballad collection One Life One Soul (2002), Human Zoo (2003), the best-of collection One Team One Spirit (2004), Lipservice (2005), the live album Made in Switzerland (2006), and Domino Effect (2007). - allmusic.com

DELANEY & BONNIE & FRIENDS - On Tour With Eric Clapton - Deluxe Edition Box Set (2010)

In December 1969, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends embarked on a tour of England that resulted in the live album, “Delaney & Bonnie & Friends on Tour with Eric Clapton.” Now, forty years after its initial release, Rhino Handmade will issue a four disc 52-track deluxe edition in July. The set will feature more than three hours of unreleased music from Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett and their “friends.” Besides the Bramletts, the band included guitarists Eric Clapton and Dave Mason, bassist Carl Radle, drummer Jim Gordon, organist Bobby Whitlock, Jim Price and Bobby Keys on horns, percussionist Tex Johnson, and vocalist Rita Coolidge and a mysterious friend named Mysterioso (George Harrison).

Packed inside the miniature mock road case will be the band’s complete 1969 Royal Albert Hall performance, a composite from Bristol’s Colston Hall, and both the early and late shows from the tour’s final date at Fairfield Halls in Croydon. (Mysterioso only joined the band for the two shows at Fairfield Halls). This release also features tracks not included on the original album like “I Don’t Know Why,” “My Baby Specializes,” “Everybody Loves A Winner,” “Get Ourselves Together,” “Will The Circle Be Unbroken,” a cover of Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin’”; and finally, the instrumental “Pigmy.”

DAVID BOWIE - Station To Station: Special Edition (2010)

Station to Station is the tenth studio album by English musician David Bowie, released by RCA Records in 1976. Commonly regarded as one of his most significant works, Station to Station is also notable as the vehicle for Bowie's last great 'character', The Thin White Duke. The album was recorded after he completed shooting Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth, and the cover featured a still from the movie. During the sessions Bowie was heavily dependent on drugs, especially cocaine, and recalls almost nothing of the production.

For fans, this release has been a long time coming. A truncated version of the live Nassau Coliseum show has been available as a bootleg for some 30-odd years. Two of the tracks received an official release in 1992 as part of Rykodisc's Bowie reissue campaign, but finally we have it in its full blown state-of-the-art 2010 remastered glory (and sounding pretty damned good for a 34 year-old recording)! - amazon.com

JOE COCKER - Live In LA (1976)

Joe Cocker "Live In LA" was recorded in 1972 and released in 1976. This was Joe's first tour since his famous Maddogs and Englishmen extravaganza. Although the tour received lukewarm reviews, this cd captures some of the raw rock and blues power that Cocker is famous for. His take on "Early In The Morning" is nothing short of thunderous. Some old favorites are here to enjoy like "Midnight Rider", High Time We Went" and "Hitchcock Railway". Riding on the success of the Maddogs tour Joe was now playing larger venues like Madison Square Garden in front of 20,000 people and the crowds responded and had fun regardless of what the critics were saying at the time. Joe gets ample support from the Chris Stainton[keyboards], Alan Spenner and Neil Hubbard[bass and lead guitar], Jim Keltner and Jim karstein[drums], Jim Horn, Jim Price and Bobby Keys[horns] and Felix Falcon[percussion]. His blusey version of the Stephen Stills classic "Love The One You're With" is a real treat and the best cover of that tune ever made. This is seventies classic rock at it's best. - amazon.com

01. Dear Landlord 02. Early in the Mornin' 03. Didn't You Know You've Got to Cry Sometime 04. St. James Infirmary 05. Hitchcock Railway 06. Midnight Rider 07. What Kind of Man Are You 08. High Time We Went 09. Love the One You're With

TONY JOE WHITE - Swamp Music: The Complete Monument Recordings (Rhino Handmade, 2006)

Tony Joe White is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist best known for his 1969 hit "Polk Salad Annie"; "Rainy Night in Georgia", which he wrote but was firstly made popular by Brook Benton in 1970; and "Steamy Windows", a hit for Tina Turner in 1989. "Polk Salad Annie" was also recorded by Elvis Presley and Tom Jones.

Digitally remastered four CD set containing all three of White's Monument Records albums in their entirety plus a slew of unreleased tracks, including ten 1969 Paris sessions and seven live performances from the Isle Of Wight. Recorded with such Muscle Shoals musicians as David Briggs, Norbert Putnam, and Jerry Carrigan, White's first album, 1969's Black And White, featured such originals as "Willie And Laura Mae Jones" and "Polk Salad Annie," along with such covers as Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman." Released later that year, White's second album, ...Continued, featured the same Muscle Shoals players, along with Mike Utley, Tommy McClure, and Sammy Creason. Tony Joe came out in 1970, revealing an absence of the horns that had been so dominant on the previous records, and anchored by White's acoustic guitar. Following an electrifying performance at the legendary Isle Of Wight festival, White moved to Warner Bros. Records, ending this first chapter. - amazon.com

HUMBLE PIE - Hot 'N' Nasty: The Anthology (1994)

Humble Pie was one of the first supergroups, formed at the tail end of the 1960s with members from Small Faces (Steve Marriott), The Herd (Peter Frampton) and Spooky Tooth (Greg Ridley). Their first album, As Safe As Yesterday Is (1969) earned the distinction of being the first album described by Rolling Stone magazine as “heavy metal”. The album peaked at No.16 in the UK charts and, buoyed by the success of their debut, a second album was released in quick succession. However, it failed to match the success of its predecessor and their record label folded. The move to A&M Records marked a move away from the British market in order to focus on American dollars – barring their first album, Humble Pie never really captured their home market. Subsequent albums were hits in America and the band became known for their popular live shows. Frampton left after Rock On in 1971 but, though the band continued to be successful, internal conflicts were starting to surface, and by 1975 it was all over for Humble Pie. An attempt was made to reform in 1980 and they managed to keep going for two albums before splitting again. The dawn of the 90s prompted a new reunion effort, but the plan was abandoned when, in 1991, Marriott died in a fire which ravaged his home. The reunion did happen eventually, but with only one member of the original band involved, Jerry Shirley. Together with an assembled cast of musicians he toured as Humble Pie featuring Jerry Shirley for the next decade, but never quite recaptured the glory days with Marriott at the front. The remaining members of the original band did reform in 2001, but only for the duration of a Steve Marriott tribute concert. - amazon.com

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS - World Gone Crazy (2010) [Deluxe Edition]

Ten years separate World Gone Crazy from Sibling Rivalry, their last studio album, but the bigger news about this 2010 release is that it sees the Doobie Brothers reuniting with Ted Templeman, the producer of their breakthrough `70s hits. With Templeman at the board, the Doobies wind up with a tight album that recalls all of their glory days, even the smooth blue-eyed soul of Michael McDonald who graciously guests on "Don't Say Goodbye," in a mere 11 songs. The Doobies certainly mean to evoke the past but they never sound forced when they indulge in some "Black Water"-styled finger-picking, ease back for a little bit of boogie or even re-create the AOR thump of their late `80s comeback "The Doctor." Some credit must go to the old pro Templeman, who certainly knows how to pull out the best from a band, but Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons, John McFee and Mike Hosack are in fine form, writing solid songs and giving relaxed, lived-in performances, all adding up to a surprising strong album. - cduniverse.com

URIAH HEEP - Acoustically Driven (2001)

Uriah Heep are an English hard rock band. The band released several commercially successful albums in the 1970s such as Uriah Heep Live (1973), but their audience declined by the 1980s, to the point where they became essentially a cult band in the US and UK. Uriah Heep maintain a significant following in Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, the Balkans, Japan and Russia, where they still perform at stadium-sized venues.

Inspired by the MTV UNPLUGGED series, the seminal metal band Uriah Heep is seen live at the Mermaid Theater in London on 12/9/00, in a rare acoustic performance. The Heep ensemble is featured with special guest Ian Anderson among others in this once in a lifetime event. Includes "Why Did You Go", "The Easy Road", "Echoes in the Dark," "More Fool You" and many more. 16 tracks unpled with an orchestra.
