STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN & DOUBLE TROUBLE - Couldn't Stand the Weather (1984) - 2010 Legacy Edition
Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble's second album, "Couldn't Stand The Weather", recorded in 19 days and released in 1984, found the band riding the wave of Stevie's Bowie association and the success of their smouldering debut of the previous year - the trio were at the top of their game, and brimming with confidence. Hooked up with legendary producer John Hammond, they were booked into day-only sessions in New York's legendary Power Station studios, meaning they had to set up and take down their gear on a daily basis. The well-documented, self-destructive drink-and-drugs-fuelled mayhem was well underway too, but at this point, they could handle it. They were a Texas hurricane hitting the Big Apple. On the eve of the 20th Anniversary of Stevie Ray's tragic death, the album's been re-released as a Legacy Edition. It adds three previously unreleased bonus tracks from the 1984 Couldn't Stand The Weather sessions, four tracks previously released on 1999's Expanded Edition, and a live gig recorded in Montreal in August 1984. Remastering-wise, there may not be much in the way of drastic sonic alteration here to get our teeth into. Instead, we'll revisit this still-underrated record with an eye to which licks you can steal (NOTE: the timings mentioned are taken from the album tracks, not the embedded live versions), and to appreciate the powerhouse that was Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble at the height of their pomp once again.

ARCADE FIRE - The Suburbs (2010) ![]()
When you call your first album Funeral, you set the bar high in terms of your maturity level. How can any young band evolve toward that full-grown third album after starting out with a meditation on death and grief? It's no problem for Arcade Fire – these Montreal rockers are not shy about gunning for a solemn, grandiose, three-hankie anthem every time out. The best song on their last disc, "No Cars Go," was a dead ringer for Neil Diamond's flag-waving classic "America," which gives a sense of the gargantuan scale of their anthemizing. On their fantastic third album, The Suburbs, they aim higher than ever, with Roman numerals and parentheses in the song titles. In their dictionary, "suburbs" is nowhere near "subtlety." But that just adds to the emotional wallop. The strange thing about Arcade Fire is how they instinctively scale their most intimate confessions to arena-rock levels, rolling out big drums and glossy keyboards. Unlike their mentors U2 and Bruce Springsteen, they don't have much interest in everyday details; the closest they come is when Butler sings about driving to Houston "as we listened to the sound of the engine failing." (Springsteen would tell you what went wrong with their carburetor. "You gotta put fuelie heads in that 396, pal!") But that's part of what has made these guys so hugely popular: You can hear how hard they're trying, and that becomes part of the excitement. - rollingstone.com

Iconic American musician Dr. John goes TRIBAL with the follow-up to his 2008 Grammy Award Winning release 'The City That Care Forgot' for 'Best Contemporary Blues Album."Tribal", featuring a track with Grammy winner Derek Trucks, is a unique spicy mix of New Orleans funk and blues with a spiritual and Native flavor with songs written by Dr John and a few of his friends - Allen Toussaint and the late Bobby Charles and joined by his ultra funky Lower 911 band of musicians. Replete with swamp rock, funk, Creole voodoo, and Mardi Gras Indian chants, `Tribal' resurrects the magical persona of "The Night Tripper" in his full regalia. At the same time, Dr John displays the rippling piano licks, Cajun-fried humor and sharp political observation that have helped make him a national spokesman for post-Katrina New Orleans. As always, Dr. John has a little help from his friends: NOLA legend Allen Toussaint contributes two songs; and three songs were co-written with the late, great Bobby Charles, a Louisiana legend himself, to whom Dr. John dedicates the album. Other guest stars include slide guitar phenomenom Derek Trucks and jazz great Donald Harrison on alto sax. - amazon.com

KERI LEIGH
Vocalist, songwriter, record producer, journalist, and author Keri Leigh is one of these multi-talented, accomplished individuals that the blues music world can't seem to get enough of. And the fact that she's barely 30 years old ensures that she'll be around, pursuing her number one passion -- singing the blues -- for a long time. Her latest album, Arrival, (1995), for the Jackson, MS-based Malaco Records label, isn't with her usual backing band, the Blue Devils, but it was recorded at Muscle Shoals Studios (which Malaco owns), and Leigh and her husband acted as co-producers of the record. Leigh moved to Austin from her native Oklahoma with her guitarist/husband Mark Lyon, in 1990. Fortunately, they were welcomed for the most part with open arms by the Austin blues community, and certainly by Clifford Antone, owner of Antone's (blues nightclub), who booked them into his place every week for about a year. Within a year of so of her moving to Austin, she began work on her first book, Stevie Ray: Soul to Soul, (Taylor Books, Dallas), a passionate account of the ups and downs of the late guitarist's all-too-short life. Leigh first met Vaughan when she interviewed him in 1986, and after several interviews, they became friends. In May 1990, they began work on what was to be his autobiography, but in August of that year, Vaughan was killed in a helicopter accident in Wisconsin. Leigh's recordings all have a Joplin-esque quality to them, and one way to describe her singing style is as a Janis Joplin for the '90s; in fact, some critics have described her as the greatest voice to come out of Texas since Joplin. Leigh has used her background as a radio and newspaper journalist to get publicity for the Blue Devils, and a glance at her overflowing press-clips folder shows what a hustler she is. But Leigh and her band work as hard as any of the other touring blues musicians around the U.S., and they spend upwards of 150 nights a year on the road. Leigh's husband Lyon is one of the most naturally gifted slide guitarists you'll ever hear, and the ease with which he handles the instrument makes it look deceptively simple. In fact, good blues guitar is very difficult to play, but Lyon has all the moves down pat. Leigh and her Blue Devils have two releases out on Amazing Records (a now-defunct label), No Beginner (1993) and Blue Devil Blues, their debut (1991), in addition to their latest Malaco album. Arrival, consisting of one-half originals and one-half cover tunes, is certainly the most accessible of her recordings. Leigh and her group have many more good years ahead of them; wherever they go, their affable ways earn them new friends and fans in the blues world. They also have a knack for making new blues converts out of rock & rollers. ~ answers.com

JOHN MELLENCAMP - No Better Than This (2010)
In an age of auto-tuned, computerized recordings, John Mellencamp's approach on his Rounder debut, "No Better Than This", is refreshing. The entire album was recorded with Mellencamp and his band all playing live in one room using a 55 year-old Ampex tape recorder and just one vintage microphone. Legendary producer T Bone Burnett captured the stunning thirteen new Mellencamp originals at three historically important locations: Sun Studio in Memphis, TN (where Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis all first recorded); the First African Baptist Church in Savannah, GA (the oldest Black church in North America, dating to 1775); and in Room 414 of the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, TX (where Robert Johnson made his first recordings in 1936). The songs on No Better Than This reflect classic American musical traditions including blues, folk, gospel, rockabilly, and country, while addressing such themes as the need for hope, the nature of relationships, and narratives that recount extraordinary occurrences in everyday life. Mellencamp says of the album, "It was absolutely the most fun I've ever had making a record in my life. It was about making music - organic music made by real musicians - that's heartfelt and written from the best place it can come from." - amazon.com

LOS LOBOS - Tin Can Trust (2010)
The Grammy-winning East L.A. band Los Lobos is releasing Tin Can Trust, their first collection of new original material in four years. Featuring powerful rock 'n' roll, blistering blues, two Spanish-language tracks, and even a Grateful Dead cover, the album is classic Lobos through and through. One of the most remarkable strengths of Los Lobos over the past thirty-plus years has been its progressive penchant for successfully experimenting with different genres, instruments and production techniques in the studio. Tin Can Trust—a pleasing jaunt through slow, dark psychedelic blues-rock; upbeat cumbia and norteno numbers, and even a rambling instrumental fuzz-guitar rave-up—features wildly different drum sounds on nearly every track, and a profound intensity that’s fluid through even the most drastic changes in tempo and instrumentation.

V.A. - Imaginational Anthem - Vols. 1-3 (2008)
After the freak-folk wave, with its emphasis on primitivism and weirdness over chops, crested in the mid '00s, Tompkins Square Records rose to the forefront of outsider acoustic music with a stream of releases and reissues by artists whose one on link was their out-and-out mastery of acoustic string playing. Featuring underground legends and next-generation geniuses, the label was to contemporary folk what Vanguard was to the `60s folk revival. IMAGINATIONAL ANTHEM, VOLS 1-3 is the label's first box set and compiles three volumes of their incredible IMAGINATIONAL ANTHEM series. Volume One focuses on veterans such as Jack Rose, Sandy Bull, and John Fahey. Volume Two compiles works by contemporary masters such as James Blackshaw and Jose Gonzalez. Volume Three acts as a secret history of modern folk with incredible banjo and guitar picking by the likes of R. Keenan Lawler and George Stavis. V.A. - Best Of Blaxploitation (2006)
Numerous compilations of '70s soul, funk, and fusion have been compiled in the name of blaxploitation throughout the years, whether or not all the inclusions were actually used in blaxploitation films (granted, just about everything from this ... Full Descriptionera was fit for soundtrack use). Union Square's The Best of Blaxploitation retraces a lot of familiar steps, but it's not as if most of the similar preceding compilations have remained easy to find. It's three discs in length, so it's bound to plug some significant gaps for beginners and moderate fans, and it contains some concise and informative track-by-track notes. It plays it straight, for the most part, with no revelations made for the hardcore collector. SPIRIT - Rock And Roll Planet...1977-1979 (2008)
Spirit was an American jazz / hard rock / progressive rock / psychedelic band founded in 1967, based in Los Angeles, California. The original lineup of the group evolved from an earlier Los Angeles band, The Red Roosters, which included Randy California (guitars, vocals), Mark Andes (bass) and Jay Ferguson (vocals, percussion). With the addition of Ed Cassidy (drums) and keyboard player John Locke the new band was originally named the Spirits Rebellious (after a book by Khalil Gibran) but was soon shortened simply to Spirit. Randy California had also played with Jimi Hendrix (then known as Jimmy James) in Jimmy James and the Blue Flames in 1966. While the period 1977-1979 is not quite a completely lost era for Spirit, it is a largely undocumented one. Singer/guitarist Randy California, drummer Ed Cassidy, and, usually, bassist Larry "Fuzzy" Knight, with the occasional contribution of keyboardist John Locke, issued a studio album, Future Games: A Magical Kahauna Dream, at the outset in January 1977, but its poor sales led Mercury Records to drop the act. International touring led to a live album recorded in 1978 before Spirit temporarily went on hiatus in 1979. As part of an ongoing investigation into the band's archive of unreleased recordings, producer Mick Skidmore thoroughly chronicles Spirit's late-'70s activities on this sprawling triple-disc set, which runs about as long as three CDs can, nearly four hours.
2008 three CD set from the late, great Randy California and Spirit containing all previously unreleased material, alternative and live versions of classic Spirit material recorded between 1977-79. TOM JONES - Praise And Blame (2010)
With a voice as bold and powerful as the man behind it, legendary singer Tom Jones has sold over a hundred million records worldwide since 1965. Following up 2008's dance-infused '24 Hours', the remarkable, stripped back sound of 'Praise And Blame' brings out the best in the Welshman.
This gospel and blues set is the back to basics gambit from Sir Tom. It’s worked for Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond in the past, this stripping of vogues to expose the singer’s raw talent: perversely, it endeared both to younger audiences. Yet Jones is a different entity: his charm was never based on authenticity. In his early career he shifted his pelvis and hollered cracking pop songs, and even his big weepy ballads were knowingly camp. His comeback period – dreamed up by his son/manager – was all irony and winks, targeted at hen parties not critics. Blessed with a soulful voice, he made an unveiled Faustian pact long ago. Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon, Paolo Nutini) produces – minimally – and guests include Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings and BJ Cole. Songs were recorded live and Tom relishes tackling the gothic-religious strains of Dylan’s What Good Am I and the bluesy tropes of John Lee Hooker’s Burning Hell. He’s no slouch barking Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s Strange Things or Mahalia Jackson’s Didn’t It Rain. He means it, sure. ANJANI - Blue Alert (2006)![]()
Honolulu-born singer-songwriter Anjani's story is the stuff of great fiction. After playing the New York jazz club circuit for years, she was introduced to celebrated Canadian poet, author, and songwriter Leonard Cohen. Immediately drawn to her talents, he brought her onboard as a keyboardist and vocalist, where she provided some background work on a number of his CDs. After finding a few lines of Cohen's handwritten lyrics lying on his desk one day (specifically "there's perfume burning in the air/bits of beauty everywhere"), Anjani was not just drawn to them, the words inspired her to write a song in their honor ("Blue Alert"). After hearing the result, the Order of Canada-winning poet was so impressed that he eventually allowed her the chance to cull through both his published and unpublished works for additional lyrics. The result is the album Blue Alert, a collection of gentle music tinged with styles ranging from Holly Cole to Tanita Tikaram, with an overriding sense of cool jazz throughout. Listening to "No One After You" sends the listener straight into a '60s beatnik club, while "Half the Perfect World" incites a bossa nova feel. There are light Irish stylings sprinkled in the music as well, from the evocative lilt of "The Mist" to her mournful performance on "Crazy to Love You." Coproducer Cohen's rhythm and pacing is all over the disc, with Anjani's semi-whispered drawl making the songs sound eerily Leonard-like. Fans of the legendary Canadian writer will likely be charmed by these minimalist numbers, and enjoy this new extension of his artistic reach. - amazon.com

LONNIE BROOKS, LONG JOHN HUNTER & PHILLIP WALKER - Lone Star Shootout (1999) ![]()
Sometimes guitar showdowns work, and sometimes they don't. Lone Star Shootout definitely does, as three veteran Gulf Coast bluesmen band together for 15 killer tracks, with a little help from their friends. Lonnie Brooks, Phillip Walker, and Long John Hunter play with all the confidence one would expect of musicians who honed their skills in venues that make that country bar from The Blues Brothers look tame. Shootout is an appealing mix of Texas, Chicago (Brooks in particular has spent a lot of time there), and Cajun country (check out "Bon Ton Roulet," and recall that both Brooks and Walker did a stint with zydeco master Clifton Chenier), with nice touches of tenderness ("This Should Go On Forever") and humor ("It's Mighty Crazy"). Overall, a good time is had by all. - amazon.com

PHILLIP WALKER - I Got A Sweet Tooth (1998)
Phillip Walker takes his brand of Louisiana-via-Texas blues for a thoroughly contemporary ride on this release. With two hand-picked bands recording in New Orleans and Austin, TX, Walker's sensuous and languid vocals, and his economical and taut guitar work both shine through brightly. There's only one original aboard, but Walker's interpretive skills are evident on a wide variety of material by Junior Parker and O.V. Wright. Highlights are bountiful, but his work is especially impressive on the low-down funky title track (shades of Lightnin' Hopkins, for sure) and its atmospheric kindred-spirit track, "Laughin' and Clownin'" (a slow blues that's anything but as jolly as the title implies). Strong, uncluttered production also plays a big role in making this disc such a delight on repeated listenings. ~ All Music Guide

THE BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA - Don't Mess With a Big Band - Live! (2010)
Brian Setzer tapped into the musical zeitgeist at key moments twice in his career, which is two times more than most artists ever manage — once as the leader of ‘80s rockabilly revivalists The Stray Cats, and again at the vanguard of the neo-swing movement in the mid-‘90s with the Brian Setzer Orchestra. While he’s been engaged in other projects in between and since, the Orchestra remains a passion for the gifted guitarist. As anyone knows, there’s no better way to hear a big band like Setzer’s than when they’re sweating it out onstage, giving their all to the performance. And that’s exactly what’s been captured here on the live album Don’t Mess With a Big Band. Caught in the heat of a 2009 show in Japan, Setzer and company create a big, bold, brassy sound as they tear their way through a set that includes re-arranged Stray Cats classics like “Runaway Boys,” the raucous “Rumble In Brighton,” and of course, the ubiquitous hits “Stray Cat Strut” and “Rock This Town.” But this isn’t simply a Stray Cats redux affair — the band also dips into everything from a hard-pumping version of the Batman theme to the old Santo & Johnny instrumental hit “Sleepwalk,” and naturally, the hepped-up take on the jump-blues gem “Jump, Jive and Wail” that made Setzer a swing hero.
"Don't Mess With A Big Band" is a sizzling recording of The Brian Setzer Orchestra's 2009 tour of Japan. Brian is in rare form and the display of guitar-playing (raw and live as it was played on the night) is truly jaw-dropping! The album contains all of his biggest hits (Stray Cats & The Brian Setzer Orchestra) and includes a couple of rare gems that he had never previously performed live. - amazon.com

BILLY SQUIER - Reach For The Sky: The Anthology (1996)
William Haislip "Billy" Squier is an American rock musician. Squier had a string of arena rock hits in the 1980s. He is probably best known for the song "The Stroke" on his 1981 album release "Don't Say No". Other hits include "In the Dark", "Rock Me Tonite", "Lonely Is the Night", "My Kinda Lover", "Everybody Wants You", "All Night Long" and "Emotions in Motion". This double-disc collection is about as complete as can be expected, drawing the best material from Billy Squier's long (and it must be said, uneven) solo career, as well as a few nets from his late-'70s days fronting the rather boring band Piper. Except for these early blunders, disc one is quite impressive, featuring such hard rock radio staples as "The Big Beat," "The Stroke," "My Kinda Lover," and "Everybody Wants You." Disc two is a more challenging affair, with Squier obviously attempting to cater to changing musical tastes and trends. - All Music Guide

GREENSLADE - Live 2001: The Full Edition (2004)
Greenslade is an English progressive rock band. It was originally formed in the autumn of 1972 (making its live debut at Frankfurt's Zoom Club in November) with the following line-up: Dave Greenslade - keyboards and vocals, Tony Reeves - bass guitar, Dave Lawson - keyboards and vocals and Andrew McCulloch - drums. Longtime musical associates, with a common background in jazz, Greenslade and Reeves had been original members of Colosseum. Lawson was previously a member of The Alan Bown Set, Web and Samurai, whilst McCulloch was briefly a member of King Crimson, playing drums on that band's third album, Lizard (1970), and Fields, the band formed by ex-Rare Bird keyboardist Graham Field.
In 2000, Greenslade and Reeves, after considering a full-blown reunion of the original line-up, teamed up with drummer John Trotter and vocalist/keyboardist John Young, and recorded a new Greenslade studio album: Large Afternoon. A tour followed, and this was recorded, and subsequently released in 2004, as Greenslade 2001 - Live: The Full Edition.

SHERYL CROW - 100 Miles From Memphis (2010)
Two years after the quirky, idiosyncratic pop of "Detours" - an aptly-named collection of side trips down back alleys and into weird new directions, Sheryl Crow returns with an album that sounds, on paper, like it might be the thematically focused, sonically unified antithesis to that record. And in some ways it is. 100 Miles from Memphis is Crow’s much talked-about Southern soul album, a collection of blue-eyed belters done in the classic Hi style that identifies itself by its very title as a kissing cousin to Dusty in Memphis. But Detours was not just a detour, and Crow remains an artist whose muse is too restless to do a straight genre homage. The record, of course, is much better for it. If anything, 100 Miles is a sort of spiritual tribute to the Memphis soul and R&B Crow grew up with in the 70s, an album that conveys much of the sensibility and the mindset of those albums without painting itself into the corner of strict emulation.
Sheryl Crow's seventh album features guest spots from Keith Richards, Justin Timberlake, and Citizen Cope, and highlights her close connection to the music and sounds of Memphis without sacrificing the bright, melodic pop sensibility of her previous albums.

FORCEFIELD - Discography
The hard rock band of the name Forcefield were the brainchild of ex-Focus keysman Jan Akkerman. They produced 5 albums from 1987 to 1992, with various line-ups that included many noted musicians such as Cozy Powell (Drums), Neil Murray (Bass), Tony Martin (Vocals), Graham Bonnet (Vocals). Musical style is best described as experimental prog/fusion with the odd rocker thrown in.

Anglo-Dutch group Forcefield was established in 1986 by the British singer and guitarist Ray Fenwick. In the seventies, Fenwick played in several well-known compositions (such as Fancy and Ian Gillan Band), but the real popularity he never had the chance to learn, although he even managed to produce solo album, Keep America Beautiful Get A Haircut in 1971. In the eighties Fenwick mostly engaged session work. In the studio, where he worked on the album, Ray met a keyboardist and vocalist Peter Prescott. Prescott also not was a newcomer to the rock scene and in the past few years, recorded with Mission Of Burma, Chameleon, Birdsongs Of Mesozoic and Sergeant. Fenwick sested Peter try to run a studio project, and soon on the market appeared the debut single of Forcefield with their cover songs of Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water. In June1987 Fenwick invited to the studio a few notable friends and to record their first album Forcefield. In addition to songs of Deep Purple, the team recorded a few cover versions, including Set Me Free (Kinks), Sunshine Of Your Love (Cream), Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin), White Room (Cream), You Really Got Me (Kinks), Keep On Running (Spencer Davis Group) etc. In addition to the mentioned duo's work on the disc were featured drummer Cozy Powell, bassist Mo Foste, bassist Neil Murray, keyboardist Nick Magnus and keyboardist Chris Cozens. The record didn't enter the charts, but because of participating in the project famous musicians is settled in many private collections. Fenwick's idea was to record a disc for the soul, and in 1988 he began to work on a second album The Talisman. Prescot didn't participate this time. As a vocalist was invited Tony Martin, who has sung in Black Sabbath. Powell, Murray and Cozens stayed in the band. Guitarist Ian Akkerman and bassist Laurence Cottle joined them. The third album To Oz And Back at Fenwick was featured by a new vocalist Graham Bonnet . In 1990 Forcefield started to record the last vocal-instrumental album, Let The Wild Run Free. The line up, including vocalist Bonnet, remained unchanged, except were added guitarist Bernie Marsden and keyboardist Don Airey. The fourth album had two cover versions - The Wind Cries Mary (Jimi Hendrix) and Can't Get Enough (Bad Company). In 1992, Fenwick decided complete the saga of Forcefield with instrumental album. Those who played on the album were Fenwick, Ackerman, Marsden, Airy, Powell and guitarist Mario Parga. - sites.google.com/site/powellitepalace/home/groups/forcefield

WATERMELON SLIM - Ringers (2010)
Watermelon Slim (his real name is Bill Homans) was born in Boston but raised in North Carolina, where, he says, he was first exposed to the blues at the age of five. He sang in choirs and glee clubs as a child, but he began seriously turning to music after a tour of duty in Vietnam that ended in 1970. He independently released the furiously antiwar album Merry Airbrakes in 1973. Although he has spent most of his adult life as a blue-collar laborer (mostly as a truck driver), Homans still found a whole lot of time for academia, earning degrees in history and journalism from the University of Oregon and a master's degree in history from Oklahoma State University. He founded a blues band, Fried Okra Jones, in the late '90s and has fronted them with his raw, impassioned blues singing, harp playing, and impressive National Steel guitar style (which he plays left-handed). His songs feature subtle, intelligent twists (he is a member of MENSA, after all), while remaining undeniably in the blues tradition.Following a serious heart attack, Watermelon Slim turned his attention full-time to music, releasing two albums on Southern Records, Big Shoes to Fill in 2003 and Up Close & Personal in 2004. Assembling a new band, the Workers, he released the hard-hitting and impressive Watermelon Slim & the Workers in 2006 on the Toronto-based NorthernBlues Music label, following it a year later with The Wheel Man and with No Paid Holidays in 2008. He then switched gears just a little into country territory with an album of truck-driving songs, Escape from the Chicken Coop, which NorthernBlues released in 2009. Slim kept the country elements and mixed them in again with his brand of roots and blues for 2010's Ringers, his fifth album for NorthernBlues. ~ answers.com

ASH GRUNWALD - Hot Mama Vibes (2010)
Ash Grunwald is an Australian radio announcer and blues musician. On "Hot Mama Vibes", Ash worked with Benny, Kanchana and Fingers Malone to create some wicked sounding tunes. Hot Mama Vibes is the follow up record to his successful, ARIA nominated LP "Fish Out Of Water" and sees Ash continue down an unmarked road of collaboration with some of the country’s most respected Hip-Hop producers, Count Bounce (Urthboy, TZU), Mr. Trials (Hilltop Hoods, Phrase, Funkoars) and Chasm (Astronomy Class), who’ve stepped in to produce and contribute to his unmistakable sound.
Ash Grunwald's fifth studio album, "Hot Mama Vibes", is neck-deep in the technological swamp of the 21st Century. It's also the most primal concoction of elemental junkyard soul to stomp through your speakers this year. "Mixing electronica with the blues was always a dream of mine," says Ash, now a 10-year veteran of live stages from Byron Bay Bluesfest to the Montreux Jazz Festival. "On the first album I was really trying to strip it back to raw elements, just be as soulful as possible. I guess every album since then has been a gradual move towards this point."

SALLY OLDFIELD - The Collection (1986)
Sally Oldfield is a singer/songwriter and the sister of composers Mike Oldfield and Terry Oldfield. Sally Oldfield's musical career started in 1968 when she founded the folk music duo The Sallyangie together with brother Mike, then aged 15. There followed several years of musical experimentation, until Oldfield's debut solo album "Water Bearer" released in 1978, which is a continuous song-cycle, written, arranged, played and produced by herself. It has many classical, mythical and poetic influences and has become a cult classic with its multi-layered vocal harmonies and atmospheric, symphonic arrangements. Her track titled "Mirrors" scored a chart hit around the world at this time. Since then, she has released over 12 more successful solo albums as well as appearing on several albums of her siblings Mike and Terry. She was one of the singers performing the girlie chorus in a couple of sections on Tubular Bells in the climax on side one and just before the Scottish tune on side two. On the demise of her record label Bronze Records in 1984, Oldfield re-located to Germany where her musical career was based from that time onwards. She became a household name in Europe and many other countries of the world, but most of her albums from 1983 onwards were not released in the UK. Oldfield regularly appeared on national television and radio and did several European concert tours, the last being in Germany in 2003. She always continued her passion for the mystical and all aspects of spirituality. - wikipedia.com

SUZANNE VEGA - Tried & True: The Best of Suzanne Vega - Limited Edition (2000)
TRIED AND TRUE is a best of collection of songs by New York City singer songwriter Suzanne Vega featuring "Luka," "Tom's Diner" and "Marlene On The Wall." This excellent overview of Vega's career contains all the hits and a fair sampling from each of her five albums, though Days of Open Hand receives a cold shoulder (only "Book of Dreams" represents it here), being a critical and personal failure. The CD as a whole shows that while Vega has stayed fairly consistent as a songwriter, her growth has been marked in the collaborations with various producers, from the spare, simplistic sound stages of Steve Addabbo and Lenny Kaye to the lush metallurgy of Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake. The collection also features that bane of fans, the exclusive track, necessitating purchasing the CD when one owns all the other material. However, these two new songs - "Book & a Cover" and "Rosemary" - are quality entries in Vega's songbook, and once again feature the production skills of Froom and Blake. ~ cduniverse.com

INDIGO GIRLS - Poseidon And The Bitter Bug - Deluxe Edition (2009)
Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, the first independently released album by veteran duo the Indigo Girls is an ambitious project that includes a pair of discs designed specifically for fans who want to hear both sides of the group: disc one is a full band version produced by Mitchell Froom, and the second disc contains the same album in stripped-down acoustic form. Musically, it's almost startling to hear how close this set feels to Strange Fire, the pair's debut album issued in 1987. The taut harmonies, the slippery guitars, the band wound loosely around both Emily Saliers and Amy Ray, and textures that flirt with rock, pop, and folk but end up in the slipstream between them. Check the infectious hooky "Love of Our Lives" that strolls somewhere between the tracks on fellow Georgians R.E.M.'s early tracks and the Beatles track "Tow of Us," from Let It Be. Then there's the emotive yet utterly naked and introspective "I'll Change," that resembles the primal emotion and self-reflection and criticism of the IG's earliest music. The spunky electric and acoustic guitars and crisp snares on "Ghost of the Gang" add to its poignant evocation of loneliness and spinning one's wheels wishing against hope to be able to get some traction - even as the pillars and people in one's life begin to slip away. But there's a truly startling moment on this record that feels all new too: the album's opener, "Digging for Your Dream," is a sad song whose refrain: "You take your prospects and your pick axe and you trudge down to the stream, and you bloody your hands digging for your dreams," captures the aspirations of every determined and beaten but unbowed citizen of this and perhaps every land. What's different is the shimmering Fender Rhodes piano, the slippery harmonies that feel more like they come out of urban soul music than the IG's trademark folk-rock, and the atmospheric space between each of the singers and the skeletal backing band. The acoustic disc is mostly a bonus for purists - though Saliers and Ray probably don't see it that way -- while the band disc is in some ways a return to innocence in the recording process - what could be more innocent than beginning again on your own label? And the next big step for a group that has restlessly tried to avoid the pitfalls of the music-making journey for nearly 25 years. Poseidon and the Bitter Bug is not only solid all the way through, it feels fresh, clean, new, and chock-full of beauty. [A deluxe edition with a bonus track was also released.] ~ All Music Guide

FRANCIS ROSSI - One Step At A Time (2010)
"One Step At A Time" was released by Status Quo frontman Francis Rossi in May 2010. It features 8 new, original compositions, a cover version of a song his son wrote for his own band ("Rolling Down The Road") and a re-working of the Quo classic "Caroline". Rossi claims: "I never stop writing songs and melodies but there have been many tracks over the years that just weren't right for Quo. These songs have been gathering dust in my mind for too long and now seems the right time to let them out into the world. It's a big step for me – I love these songs so much it hurts!" but will it please the hardcore Quo fans as well as appealing to a new audience? Will it be met with the same chilling reception "King Of The Doghouse" received? The first impressions of this album are that it has a very happy vibe. Particularly catchy melodies give some tracks an almost "nursery rhyme" feel although the musicianship on this release is fantastic and is not to be sniffed at... - ultimate-guitar.com

IAN PARKER - Lost & Found (2003) ![]()
A songwriter genuinely literate, sometimes almost literary, Ian is an original craftsman. Expressed through a distinctive bitter-sweet vocal delivery, Ian's songs hold nothing back. His ability and willingness to share with his audience, naked honesty and genuine emotion, is what sets him apart. He has also developed a distinctively expressive guitar style, which perhaps explains his ever-growing popularity in the blues world, but the truth is he isn't a blues artist. Roots music continues to form the foundation of his sound, but there are no boundaries in place at this point in Ian’s artistic journey, and the emphasis lies firmly on entertaining everyone present, not just the guitar fans.
This CD was recorded live at The Robin on 25th February 2003. This is the first official release by the Ian Parker Band, and features seven new songs written by Ian Parker with three "covers".

EDDIE TURNER - The Turner Diaries (2006)
Eddie Turner's sophomore solo release, coming just a year after his first album, stays in the same groove as his well-received 2005 offering. That album nabbed a Blues Music Award nomination for Best New Artist Debut, and this one is just as impressive. Maybe he's making up for lost time since the guitarist has been at it as a sideman for three decades starting with his work in the legendary Zephyr. But whatever the reason, this is another gripping slab of searing, imaginative blues-rock. - cduniverse.com
“Otherworldly”, “scorching”, “polyrhythmic” and “chilling” have all been used to describe Eddie Turner’s guitar playing. His ethereal style is an amalgam of the Afro-Cuban rhythms of his heritage and the music that influenced him as a teenager: Chicago blues, jazz, r&b and psychedelic rock. The Cuban-born singer/guitarist cut his teeth in several rock bands contributing what Slate magazine describes as “spacey-yet-resounding solos.” - eddiedevilboy.com

PINETOP PERKINS & WILLIE 'Big Eyes' SMITH - Joined At The Hip (2010)
Pinetop Perkins and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith have been playing together on and off for more than four decades. Both played with Muddy Waters during his '70s resurgence and both continued on without the icon as part of the Legendary Blues Band. They been on record and onstage more times than they can count since but Joined At The Hip represents something of a first for the two and that's saying something considering the careers and ages of both men. Age may be nothing but a number but the numbers in this case are noteworthy. Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, is the young whippersnapper of this duo at age 74. Joe Willie "Pinetop" Perkins was 96 at the time of this recording and will turn 97 next month, out on the road, touring with Smith in support of their new record.
Pianist Pinetop Perkins is one of the true originals. With his 100th birthday on the not-too-distant horizon, he is one of the last blues musicians who can legitimately claim direct roots in the Delta blues of the 1930s a period that spawned such giants as Robert Johnson, Honeyboy Edwards and other titans of the of the deep South who laid the foundation for the blues as we know them today.

10. Save Him
11. If I Gave You My Life
Justin Nozuka is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter. That Justin Nozuka's debut, HOLLY, was released on the British label Outcaste is appropriate. Like labelmates KT Tunstall and Joss Stone, Nozuka melds blues-inflected soul-pop with intense, earnest singer-songwriter fare for a brew that is easy to digest but is emotionally substantive as well. Nozuka's age (he was 18 at the time of HOLLY's release) is sometimes hard to believe, given the maturity and insight of these songs. "Save Him," a tale of domestic abuse, and the lilting "After Tonight" are two standouts on this very promising debut. - cduniverse.com

SRV & DOUBLE TROUBLE - The Real Deal: Greatest Hits - Vol.1 (1999) & Vol.2 (2006)

A supremely strong and unusually varied collection of songs, "The Real Deal: Greatest Hits -Volume 1" brings together 16 of Stevie Ray's best tunes, smouldering slow blues, melodic, swaggering R&B, and gritty blues-rock, all of it suprebly played and arranged by one of the few latter-day blues guitarists who was NOT overly hyped! Most of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's best songs are here, including "Pride & Joy", "Cold Shot", the sizzling high-octane blues "Texas Flood", and the rollicking "The House is Rocking", and those that aren't here are on the equally excellent volume two.
"The Real Deal: Greatest Hits - Volume 2" is a compilation album of material by Stevie Ray Vaughan in 1999. The album was released by Epic Records and includes material from the five studio albums he released with Double Trouble as well as live material and collaborations with brother Jimmie and surf guitarist Dick Dale.

MARIANNE FAITHFULL - A Collection Of Her Best Recordings (1994)
Something of a promotional sampler, FAITHFULL: A COLLECTION OF HER BEST RECORDINGS acts as a a supplement to the more official compilation, the two-CD PERFECT STRANGER: THE ISLAND ANTHOLOGY. Still, this selection is notable for its inclusion of Faithfull's eerie rendition of "Trouble In Mind" from Alan Rudolph's '80s retro detective film of the same name, and the powerful live version of the scabrous "Times Square," a junkie's narrative nearly religious in its intensity. Anyone who doubts Marianne Faithfull's greatness as a singer need only hear this thrilling performance. Also on hand is a rare performance of Patti Smith's Native American chant "Ghost Dance," featuring and produced by Keith Richards. Note: "As Tears Go By" is the 1965 original, so one can compare just how far she had come. - cduniverse.com

MARY HOPKIN - Those Were The Days (1995)
Mary Hopkin was one of those 1960s UK pop singers influenced by folk music, like the early Marianne Faithfull. She made breezy melodic pop music with flair and had huge hits with Those Were The Days, Temma Harbour and Knock Knock Who’s There. There is a special wistful quality in her voice that makes these songs still resonate in my mind after all these years. The album also includes pop standards like Que Sera Sera and the folk classic Streets Of London which she interprets gracefully. If you like melodic pop from the 60s and early 70s, you’ll love this album. - amazon.com

RODRIGO Y GABRIELA - Rodrigo y Gabriela (2006)
How did two Mexican-born heavy-metal enthusiasts end up at the top of the Irish charts? The story begins back in their homeland, where Rodrigo Sanchez (lead guitar) and Gabriela Quintero (rhythm and guitar-top hand percussion) met as teenagers. Following years of fruitless strle, they settled in Dublin, working as street entertainers, eventually wandering as far afield as Denmark and Spain. But over time, their virtuoso duo-guitar instrumentals garnered them a following, which in turn led to indoor engagements where they no longer had to freeze their hands off. And no wonder, their eruptive mixture of Central and South American folkways, with its propulsive rock rhythms, plus grooves reminiscent of The Gipsy Kings' crowd-pleasing Catalan rumbas, is incredibly infectious. Yes, their frisky yet spot-on covers of "Stairway To Heaven" and "Orion" may goad some listeners into purchasing the album, but believe it or not, the original tunes are even more mesmerizing. "Ixapa," in which the pair are joined by noted Hungarian Roma (Gypsy) fiddler Roby Lakatos, has a wicked, pan-European swing, while the impossibly fleet "Juan Loco" should delight all comers, once they catch their collective breaths! - amazon.com

ALISON KRAUSS - Now That I've Found You: A Collection (1995)
A poll-winning fiddler since her teens, Alison Krauss was an established bluegrass star when her label persuaded her to step out from her usual projects with Union Station, her crack band, and sanction this compilation of various band and solo guest performances. The ploy worked, yielding a wonderful, odds-beating crossover hit with Krauss's cover of "Baby, Now That I've Found You," a carousing late-'60s pop chant transformed into a delicate, vulnerable declaration of love. Focusing on Krauss's lovely, yearning soprano, the track elevated the musician above her resolutely democratic role in her quintet, catapulting Krauss to the biggest bluegrass success story in over 30 years. Krauss has stayed true to her bluegrass roots, as well as to Union Station, but this cross-section of contemporary bluegrass songs, joyous gospel, and canny rock covers testifies to the young artist's luminous appeal. Discover the crystalline voice and masterful bluegrass fiddle playing of Grammy-winner Alison Krauss. This collection contains three previously-unreleased songs, as well as highlights from her albums with her band, Union Station, and the Cox Family. - amazon.com

GARY MOORE - Greatest Hits (2010)
Gary Moore is acknowledged as one of the finest musicians that the British Isles has ever produced. In a career that dates back to the 1960s, there are few musical genres that he has not turned his adroit musical hand to, and has graced the line-ups ever several notable rock bands, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II and Skid Row to name but three. Gary was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on April 4th 1952. Like many others, he was turned on to rock and roll first through hearing Elvis Presley, and then via The Beatles. Seeing the likes of Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in his hometown in the mid-60s opened up to him the rich world of The Blues. Hearing the art of the Blues guitar performed by such lauded exponents as Peter Green fired Moore's nascent talent, and it wasn't long before he was being hailed as a teen musical prodigy. - gary-moore.com

JACKIE GREENE -Till The Light Comes (2010)
Discovered at an open mike when Dig Music's owner happened to be there, singer/songwriter Jackie Greene is a captivating performer who works well in simple, sparse environments. Signing to the label almost immediately, the California native worked countless clubs and bars before his discovery, a fact made more interesting when it's considered that he was a teenager during that time. A multi-instrumentalist, Greene played most of the instruments on his debut record, Gone Wanderin'. A soulful bit of roots music, the album brought him to a national audience and sprung him into a college tour during the fall of 2002. Rusty Nails, a collection of material from 2001, was released by Dig Records in 2003, followed by the live-in-the-studio DVD video Broken Hearts Dusty Roads in 2004. Sweet Somewhere Bound appeared on Dig later that same year, and was licensed to Verve Records, which reissued it in 2005. His first proper album for Verve, American Myth, appeared in 2006. In 2008, Greene released Giving Up the Ghost, his first album for 429 Records. The pop-infused but still heartfelt Till the Light Comes followed in 2010.

WALTER TROUT - Common Ground (2010) ![]()
![]()
![]()
Common Ground is Trout's 19th album in a career that has spanned 35 years and included stints with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and boogie-rock kings Canned Heat. Produced by noted blues boardman John Porter (B.B. King, Buddy Guy), Common Ground features a dozen new songs that showcase the guitarist's trademark fusion of blues and rock. Trout is accompanied on the album by bassist Hutch Hutchinson, pianist John Cleary, and drummer Kenny Aronoff. "John Porter has an uncanny ability to draw performances from me that I didn't know that I was capable of," says Trout of the recording sessions for Common Ground. "I would play a solo or sing a song and think that I had done well, and John would just say to me: 'that was good - but I know you can do better!' And I would try it again, only to find out that he was right! He is really brilliant at what he does." Trout has always been a pretty good songwriter, and with new material like "Danger Zone," "Eyes Of A Child," "Wrapped Up In The Blues," and the album's title track, the guitarist challenges his skills as a wordsmith with finely-crafted stories and emotionally-charged lyrics. In a press release for Common Ground, Trout says of the album's title, "in this modern world which seems to be so filled with polarization, disagreements, and cruelty, I feel that it is important that we try to find SOME place where we can bond and come together in our common humanity!" - blues.about.com

ELTON JOHN - The Legendary Covers Album (2008)
This is a recording of Sir Elton from his earliest days. These songs pre-date "Your Song". They are interesting interpretations of songs that were popular at the time they were recorded. It was not unusual for new artists to perform the hits of other performers. It was what their audiences often wanted and presented consumers with something recognizable from a new talent. Now that Elton has matured as a performer and composer, there is no 'need' for him to cover the songs of others. These covers for the most part are not faithful to the originals. Elton has sung these songs like the Reg Dwight of 1970 would have (and obviously did). For this purpose, the CD should be looked upon as a time-piece, not a new album that is somehow 30+ years old.
16 covers features rare early recordings of Elton John that were found and remastered after being lost for more than 25 years. Included are cover versions of such '60s hits as "Spirit In The Sky," "Signed Sealed Delivered" and "Travelin' Band." - cduniverse.com

ROBIN ADLER & MUTTS OF THE PLANET - Safaris To The Heart: The Songs Of Joni Mitchell (2010)
San Diego vocalist Robin Adler, veteran of the Peter Sprague group, and her husband, multi-instrumentalist music producer Dave Blackburn, have been lifelong fans of Joni Mitchell. In early 2006 they embarked on the ambitious project of learning her music in all its complexities and through all its epochs. Hoping to honor such a major artist they have produced a tribute show deep in its own right. Much, much more than a simple 'tribute' album or a collection of covers, Robin Adler and Mutts of the Planet inhabit the music of Joni Mitchell, spanning her early days and following through to her later work which so many others have shortchanged. Robin's expressive voice feels every word and conveys it to you perfectly, and the musicians are all brilliant in their own right, offering up a variety of musical colors. Expect some new arrangements, some expanded interpretations, and most of all, expect to be blown away because you will be. Add to that the wonderful production values and you have one of 2010's finest albums, and certainly a must-have for anyone who appreciates the genius of Joni Mitchell. - amazon.com

V.A. - Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album (2010)
Official World Cup anthems are one of the most viable commodities around sporting events, and Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album, joins the ranks with a parade of multinational pop stars indulging in epic collaborations - think R. Kelly backed by a Soweto choir (which honors the World Cup host South Africa) or the songwriter Angélique Kidjo from Benin appearing with American R&B star John Legend. (Many African music fans cried foul over Colombian star Shakira's song "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" being named the Official World Cup Song, although she collaborated with the South African group Freshlyground.) One of the highlights is "Ke Nako," written by teacher and songwriter J Pre, and delivered by a group including Wyclef Jean and Jazmine Sullivan. Kidjo and Legend's duet on "Move on Up," a cover of the Curtis Mayfield positivist classic, is especially vibrant and moving, with a group including Antibalas horns, Christian McBride on bass, guitarist Lionel Loueke, and a South African trio of backing vocalists. (It should be noted that the disc naturally doesn't include any music not blessed by FIFA, so look no further if you want to find unofficial anthems like England's entry, "Shout for England," with Dizzee Rascal and comedian James Corden, or Coca Cola's "official" anthem, "Wavin' Flag" by Somalian superstar K'NAAN. All net proceeds benefit FIFA's "20 Centers for 2010," which promises to build health and education centers across Africa, plus other African charities chosen by the album's artists. - cduniverse.com

Produced by Tony Bongiovi and Lance Quinn, the album is significant for being the only Bon Jovi album on which a song ("She Don't Know Me") appears that was not written or co-written by members of the band. Aside from hit single "Runaway", songs from the album were rarely performed live after the band released their breakthrough album Slippery When Wet in 1986. However, on the band's current Circle Tour, songs including "Roulette", "Shot Through the Heart", and "Get Ready" have been performed. - wikipedia

RICHIE SAMBORA - Undiscovered Soul (1998)
On this, his second solo album, Richie Sambora attempts to step out of the shadow of his vocalist/movie star co-writer. He does a fine job of it, as his singing and guitar playing have definitely evolved from his earlier work. UNDISCOVERED SOUL is a very personal, heartfelt album full of emotion and passion. The album consists of mostly mid-tempo, acoustic-based songs, going more for feel than flash. In other words, Bon Jovi fans shouldn't expect any lighning-fingered, '80s heavy metal solos here. Improving upon his blues-based debut release, Sambora combines the aforementioned mid-tempo tunes with soulful ballads. He has lined up a stellar band to get the job done, including Kenny Aronoff (arguably the finest technical drummer in rock), Don Was (who also produces), Billy Preston and Chuck Leavell. All in all, an excellent sophomore effort from a guitarist who deserves his time to shine. - cduniverse.com

TOM WAITS - Greatest Hits (2008)
Tom Waits, according to the esteemed American critic Robert Hilburn, is clearly one of the most important figures of the modern pop era. Such sentiments are not mere hyperbole; in a career that now spans four decades and over 20 albums, Tom Waits has long since emerged as an extraordinary innovative force, a singular voice whose music remains determinedly and even gloriously - well beyond the trivial fads and fashions of popular culture. Waits has a distinctive voice, described by critic Daniel Durchholz as sounding "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car." With this trademark growl, his incorporation of pre-rock music styles such as blues, jazz, and vaudeville, and experimental tendencies verging on industrial music, Waits has built up a distinctive musical persona. Lyrically, Waits' songs frequently present atmospheric portrayals of grotesque, often seedy characters and places – although he has also shown a penchant for more conventional ballads. He has a cult following and has influenced subsequent songwriters despite having little radio or music video support. He has been nominated for a number of major music awards and has won Grammy Awards for two albums.

HARPER - Stand Together (2010)
Part harmonica wizard and part rhythmic explorer, Harper is a fiery artist who blurs the lines between rock, blues, soul, and world music. His latest Blind Pig release, Stand Together, is the most artistically realized CD Harper has ever written. The self-produced album marks the first time Harper has recorded a CD using his Michigan-based touring band, Midwest Kind, a collaboration that pays several dividends. For one, he was able to go deeper into the song arrangements, incorporating some of the interplay of their live performances. And his close relationship with his band members enabled him to craft exactly what he envisioned his songs to be. Though Harper has already been acknowledged as an exemplary composer, his current songwriting has matured and his messages have become more powerful. The greater confidence and polish that come as a result of his non-stop touring schedule have only enhanced his considerable skills as a singer and harmonica player. And his proficiency as a didgeridoo player has increased dramatically since picking up the instrument in 2004. - amazon.com

COURT YARD HOUNDS - Court Yard Hounds (2010)
With Natalie Maines uninterested in recording a new Dixie Chicks album nearly five years after the last, sisters Emily Robison and Martie Maguire decided to abandon her as a temporary measure: they formed the side project Court Yard Hounds, releasing an eponymous album in May of 2010. Co-produced by Jim Scott, who mixed Taking the Long Way, it sounds like the Dixie Chicks minus Natalie: softer, sweeter, lacking a sense of surprise, but not unpleasantly so. If anything, there may be a touch too much pleasantness in the Court Yard Hounds, with the record often gently swaying to acoustic instrumentation and relaxing on its smooth surfaces. When guitars are cranked up, as they are on "Ain't No Son," Robison is almost buried underneath their steady thump, which isn't the fault of the production: she's too sweet a presence to cut through thick production. In other words, she lacks Maines' feistiness, something integral to the Dixie Chicks' crossover, but she's a consummate pro, possessing exceptional taste, sturdy songwriting skills, and the status to hire the very best studio musicians, not to mention having Jakob Dylan drop in for a duet on "See You in the Spring." Perhaps the results are predictable, but they are satisfying, and it's better to have new music from this duo than none at all. ~ cduniverse.com
