BETTYE LaVETTE - Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook (2010)
Bettye LaVette brings the British Invasion home to its American R&B roots on Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook. Produced by Bettye, Rob Mathes and Michael Stevens, the album is a 13 song journey through compositions by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd among others, concluding right where the very idea for Interpretations started: Bettye s visceral rendition of The Who s Love Reign O er Me from the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors, which appears here as a bonus track. That performance which first brought Bettye together with Stevens (the event s producer) and Mathes (its musical director) showcased for a national television audience what her devoted fanbase already knew: Bettye LaVette is without parallel as an interpreter of popular song. The success of this performance lead to another astonishing moment on the national stage, her duet of Sam Cooke s Change Is Gonna Come with Jon Bon Jovi at the Obama Inaugural Concert.
Now comes Bettye LaVette s first release since those extraordinary performances. Finding new excited fans at her shows, Bettye decided to explore more of the repertoire that had brought her all this attention. From the wistful naiveté of The Moody Blues Nights in White Satin, which Bettye matures into a deep and unshakeable lament, to the funky workout of Ringo Starr s It Don t Come Easy, Bettye inhabits these songs, revitalizes them and exposes the humanity that makes these 13 tracks not just pop songs, but enduring works of art. - amazon.com

JAMES GANG - Live In Concert (1971)
The James Gang earned a great number of fans through their live performances, so it made sense that they would release a live record within months of their successful third album. Live in Concert captures much of the energy of their live performances, with Joe Walsh's guitar solos catching fire on nearly every song. However, the record also makes it clear that he was beginning to outgrow the confines of the James Gang, as Fox and Peters strled to keep up with his imaginative playing for most of the album. This album is the last to feature Joe Walsh as guitarist and vocalist and Bill Szymczyk as producer and engineer. ~ amazon.com

DON McLEAN - American Pie: The Greatest Hits (2000)
Be careful what you wish for - you just might get it. Don McLean, like any other singer/songwriter, no doubt wanted a hit or some degree of success. "American Pie" gave him that and too much more. McLean's ode to Buddy Holly begins with a folky intro that sounds like a protest song. Almost nine minutes later, the tune finally ends. Sure, the song's poetic; sure, it's a touching tribute; and sure, it's undeniably a classic. But it also became the bane of McLean's existence for many years, as it was the only song of his that people wanted to hear. The album American Pie sold well on the strength of the title track, and even propelled the comparatively weak "Vincent" into the Top 20. A fine release rooted in folk, American Pie is a classic, whether or not one actually pays attention to the other songs. - amazon.com

ROKY ERICKSON WITH OKKERVIL RIVER - True Love Cast Out All Evil (2010)
Legendary musician Roky Erickson triumphantly returns with "True Love Cast Out All Evil", his first new album in fourteen years. It consists of largely unreleased and unknown songs that Erickson wrote throughout his decades-long career – while with the Elevators, while in prison at Rusk, during the horror-rock days and in the midst of the long decline. In these songs, Roky hangs up the zombie and atom-brain metaphors to speak with heart-breaking candor about his real life story, about shock treatment, imprisonment, mental illness, and irreversible loss. And, with the wisdom that can only be marshaled by someone who has been through all of the above personally, Erickson also tells us about love, hope, and spiritual grace. - amazon.com

MUMFORD & SONS - Sigh No More (2009)
"Sigh No More" is the debut album from London based outfit Mumford & Sons. Bonding over a love of folk, country and bluegrass the four piece became part of the London underground folk scene that kicked started the careers of Laura Marling and Noah And The Whale. London’s nu-folk scene has turfed up surprises as unlikely as they’ve been refreshing of late. First we had Laura Marling, displaying a poise and unnerving command of her material that called to mind the best of the 70s troubadour tradition. Then there was Johnny Flynn’s earthy erudition, steeped as it was in folk’s mystical lexicon. And this year Noah & The Whale reconciled their twee approach with a newly-whetted pop savvy and broader sonic palette, transforming into a major-league concern in the process. Having paid their dues the old-fashioned way as the (superb) on-off backing band for Marling in 2007/08, "Sigh No More" sees four-piece Mumford and Sons strike out for equally distinctive territory, carving out a mostly winning – if nigglingly naive – debut that deserves an audience to match its impressive convictions. It’s a record deploying a wealth of folk signifiers, from banjos and sighing mandolins to dubious lyrics about how the harvest left no fruit for you to eat, but which in truth shares more genes with the bombastic song progressions of Arcade Fire or even Kings of Leon’s grit ‘n’ shine indie anthemics. - amazon.com

JOAN BAEZ - The First 10 Years (1970)
This is a great collection of Joan Baez's amazing work over the first ten years of her recording career. It is not what one could rightfully call her greatest hits, for she was not an artist who released many singles or who got an awful lot of exposure on AM radio during the 1960s and early 1970s. Instead, she was mainly played on hip FM stations, and of course, was played incessantly by folkies in their record players, so that her music wafted through the dormitories and off the college campuses of the time. So, although there are a few songs included here like "love Is Just A Four Letter Word" that were on the charts, most of them are known better as songs from albums one listened to again and again. - amazon.com

PETER FRAMPTON - Thank You Mr Churchill (2010) ![]()

![]()
Following his Grammy Award-winning instrumental album, 2006's Fingerprints, Peter Frampton returns with "Thank You Mr. Churchill", his most personal collection to date. The 11-song set, co-produced and co-engineered by Frampton, features the legendary guitarist at his most incisive lyrically as he tackles the battles that wage within us and the outside forces that rage around us. His searing guitar work flows over every song, setting the mood. "This album is very autobiographical," Frampton says. "It starts with my birth, which I thank Mr. Churchill for bringing my father back from the Second World War." Recorded at his home studio in Cincinnati, Churchill is deeply intimate, weaving tales of loss, love and redemption and the lessons learned along the way. Churchill also includes Frampton's reflective take on troubling world events, including the Wall Street bailout ("Restraint") and even the tragic case of Megumi Yokota, a Japanese girl kidnapped more than 30 years ago by North Korea ("Asleep at the Wheel"). Frampton wrote all tracks on Churchill, penning many with longtime collaborator Gordon Kennedy. His co-producer/co-engineer, Chris Kimsey, was the engineer on Frampton's first solo record, 1972's Wind of Change. Co-engineer Don Gunn (Death Cab For Cutie) also contributes to Churchill. Guests include Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron, who also played on Fingerprints, and the legendary Funk Brothers, who appear on Frampton's Motown homage, "Invisible Man." Frampton remains one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. At 16, he was lead singer and guitarist for British teen band, the Herd. At 18, he co-founded one of the first super groups, seminal rock act Humble Pie. His fifth solo album, the electrifying Frampton Comes Alive, is one of the top selling live records of all time. - amazon.com

DELANEY & BONNIE - The Best Of (1990)
Husband-and-wife duo Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett were among the foremost proponents of blue-eyed soul in the 1960s and '70s. They're famous for luring Eric Clapton into their midst and influencing the direction of his solo work, but their own legacy stands up well beyond that. BEST OF DELANEY & BONNIE culls the best tracks from the pair's key releases, including their effervescent signature song, "Get Ourselves Together"; the New Orleans parade-band number "Free the People"; and the propulsive, Stax-indebted "Soul Shake." Delaney & Bonnie operated in a time when the boundaries of music were bursting open, and their sound is an organic mix of rock, blues, soul, gospel, and country that ultimately becomes its own unique paradigm. The Bramletts were at once musical relatives of the contemporaneous Southern rock of the Allman Brothers and their crowd, and a band apart. - cduniverse.com

ALBERT WHITE - Soul Of The Blues (2007)
Albert began playing guitar at an early age. His uncle, the legendary Piano Red, noticed that Albert was actually playing self-made chords on a ukulele at the age of nine. Red sent Albert to take lessons from his guitarist, Wesley Jackson. Albert and his friend Marion Smith were soon camped out in front of juke joints, playing and singing for tips. In early 1962, Albert became the bandleader for Piano Red’s “Dr. Feelgood and the Interns.” Red had scored a hit with his song “Dr. Feelgood” and dressed his band in intern jackets and nurses uniforms. One of the “nurses” was Beverly “Guitar” Watkins who became a lifelong friend to Albert. When Red disbanded, Albert joined the “Tams” from the late 60’s to the early 70’s, and by the mid 70’s, joined Hank Ballard and the midnighters. In recent decades, Albert’s own sound emerged, gigging with musicians in Atlanta, Georgia. Albert is currently touring the globe with the Music Maker Revue with his blues that makes everybody “Feel good."

BETTY LAVETTE & CAROL FRAN - Bluesoul Belles: The Complete Calla, Port & Roulette Recordings (2005)
The stellar Bluesoul Belles spotlights Betty Lavette and Carol Fran, two of the more criminally underrated singers from soul music's mid-'60s golden era. Unearthing two dozen tracks from the Calla, Port, and Roulette vaults, many of them previously unreleased alternate takes, the set offers a persuasive argument that, while never earning the critical respect or commercial kudos of their contemporaries, both women deserve consideration alongside the greats of the period. Lavette's opening "Let Me Down Easy," a staple of the Northern soul scene and the countless anthologies it's yielded, is far and away the most recognizable cut here -- the song is her masterpiece, a blisteringly poignant requiem for romance gone bad distinguished by its unique, tangolike rhythm and sweeping string arrangement. The remaining seven tracks don't reach the same peaks, but from the Motown-inspired stomp of "What I Don't Know (Won't Hurt Me)" to the gospel-inflected "Cry Me a River," Lavette's versatility and raw power ring through loud and clear. Although Lavette receives top billing, Fran's contributions comprise fully two-thirds of the disc; best known for her latter-day blues efforts with guitarist husband Clarence Holliman, the aching beauty of her mid-'60s soul sides is revelatory. Though rooted in the blues, her crystalline vocals were nevertheless ideally suited to the uptown style and sophistication of her Port dates; the chart failure of these recordings is baffling, and in particular the remarkable "Any Day Love Walks In" merits the label of lost classic. ~ All Music Guide

CAROL CHASE - Blue Highway (2004)
Carol.....a member of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band, will be on tour again when the band goes out in 2008. This Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group continues the southern rock legacy and the Honkettes (which Carol is one of) will be there on stage, singing back-up vocals. It's been a long road from the western plains of the North Dakota, where she was born and raised, to the bright lights of the many stages around the world that she's performed on. In the late 90's, while she and a co-writer were song-writing in Nashville, she got a call from her friend Rickey Medlocke, who informed her that he was back in Lynyrd Skynyrd and that there was an opening for a back-up singer. Two days later she arrived in Ft. Meyers, Fl. to audition for the band (consisting of Gary, Johnny, Rickey, Leon, Hughie, Billy, Owen, and Dale) and was hired to start touring the next week, as they traveled to Europe. She's has been with the band ever since, touring and recording 5 cd's with them. Then in 2004 she recorded her own CD entitled 'Blue Highway'. MEG HUTCHINSON - Come Up Full (2008)

MARY GAUTHIER - Between Daylight And Dark (2007)
In an era when too many youthful singer-songwriters earn critical plaudits too easily, the more mature Mary Gauthier's track record has been a heartening exception to that rule. Her difficult early life and ability to create soulful, in-your-face poetry from harsh reality, occasional brutality, and hope set her apart. If anything, she surpasses her past work with this stunning live-in-the-studio effort that captures a wide range of scenarios. There's the needy desperation of the love songs "Please" and "Before You Leave" and her brilliant conjuring of the raw displacement, rage, and grief of her fellow New Orleanians in the Hurricane Katrina-inspired "Can't Find the Way" (with a cameo from the legendary Van Dyke Parks). The atmospheric title song, penned by Gauthier and Fred Eaglesmith, teems with the angst of lost love. As the hard-hitting scenario of "Snakebit" carries the tension of classic film noir, "Thanksgiving" captures a bleak holiday prison visit. "The Last of the Hobo Kings" stands as a 21st-century requiem to the vanishing transients of the past, decades before they were renamed "homeless." Joe Henry's spare, understated production only enhances the wallop of these performances. In a world glutted with Americana singer-songwriters, many plagued by a dilettantism that prevents them from plowing too deeply into the dark side of the human condition, Gauthier reaffirms - magnificently - her ability to do that and much more. - amazon.com

"Man From Another Time" is the fourth album from the freewheeling Seasick Steve. Recorded, written and produced by Seasick Steve himself, the album continues with the classic blues sound that has graced his previous albums. Opting for analogue recording equipment and his array of guitars including the 'one-string Diddely-bo' the album has an authentic quality, with reverb coming from the recording space and delay created from the original tapes. It entered the UK album chart at number 4 on 25 October 2009.

JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS - Greatest Hits (2010)
oan Jett has been revolutionizing music for decades: from co-founding her first major band, the pioneering all-girl punk quintet, the Runaways ("Cherry Bomb"), at only 15 years old to bringing the infectious music of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts to the masses, her music has remained fresh and culturally relevant. With such a continued interest in Jett's music, the musician felt it was finally an appropriate time to release a definitive Greatest Hits album. “Fans have been asking me for years and years for a new Greatest Hits album. There has always been interest,” said the musician. “But, over the past few years I have been executive producing a film about my first band, the Runaways. In the process, I revisited the music and have really been living with it. It made me realize that it would be great to get it back out into the market place for the fans and for a new audience.” DOWNLOAD
Just prior to the major motion picture The Runaways hits theatres, this 2 CD set and 2 LP set serves as both a new, definitive, Joan Jett Best Of album and as a companion soundtrack the film. The album includes 7 songs featured in the film, 1 previously unreleased track, all of the hits re-mastered, and re-recordings of several Runaways favourites.

RONNIE WOOD - Anthology: The Essential Crossexion (2006)
Most people don't think of Rolling Stones' guitarist Ronnie Wood as a solo artist. His career in pop music has been a long one and is entering its fifth decade. Like his former Faces' bandmate Rod Stewart, Wood has always been a supreme collaborator, even on his own projects. Finally, Virgin Records has issued Ronnie Wood Anthology: The Essential Crossexion, a double-disc of Wood's recordings as both a solo artist and as a member of bands like the Creation and the Birds (the U.K. group, not the California one), as bassist for the Jeff Beck Group, lead guitarist with the Faces, on Rod Stewart's early solo records, and, of course, with the Rolling Stones. For the most part, the compilers at Virgin have done an excellent job here. Wood fans could argue over track selections forever, but what you get is a single-disc overview of his solo albums, and another single-disc overview of his work with the aforementioned bands. - answers.com

V.A. - Blind Pig Records - 30th Anniversary Collection: "Pearls From Swine" (2006)
This stalwart independent label, headquartered in San Francisco, began in a small Ann Arbor club and grew into one of the most important imprints in blues. Thirty-three tunes ricochet between the potent old-school Chicago stylings of Buddy Guy and Junior Wells's classic "Hoodoo Man Blues" and Big Walter Horton'ss swinging shuffle "Put the Kettle On" to the intriguing pop-folk hybrid of Roy Rogers and Norton Buffalo and the dashing retro-nuevo guitarisms of Nick Curran & the Niteflies to the brawny Texas-schooled sounds of Omar & the Howlers and Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King. The label's Delta blues side is underrepresented, although James Cotton and Elvin Bishop offer two great flavors of cottonland grind. But what's truly perplexing is that Blind Pig's historic recordings by Luther Allison, Johnny Shines, Jimmy Rogers, Charlie Musselwhite, Boogie Woogie Red (the label's first artist), and other significant musicians are omitted, while ham-fisted blues-rockers Tommy Castro and Albert Cummings and the mediocre Deanna Bogart and Duke Tumatoe get entries. Which makes this retrospective decidedly hit-and-miss. - amazon.com

TEN YEARS AFTER - The Anthology 1967-1971 (2002)
Since Ten Years After's albums weren't stand-alone classics, this double CD of their prime years is the best bet for those who like the band but don't want to sit through some pretty mediocre and monotonous stuff to get to the best bits. The 26 cuts are pretty well chosen, including naturally their most famed songs: "I'm Going Home" (the live Woodstock version), "I'd Love to Change the World," and the British hit "Love Like a Man." Even as it draws from the cream of their work, it can't quite make the argument for them as a major band, but it does show that they were a more versatile act than many would remember. There are some reasonable pop- and folk-rock-flavored songs from the pen of Alvin Lee; a fair amount of jazz influence from time to time, as on "Me and My Baby" and "Woman Trouble"; a song ("50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain") that borrows rather too liberally from the Rolling Stones, "Sympathy for My Devil"; and even a bit of Grateful Dead-like vocal harmony on "Hear Me Calling." There's still, of course, quite a bit of blues-rock, flash guitar, and boogie, which sound better when broken up by more subdued and varied cuts and also benefit from the wise decision not to include too many covers. It's also nice that the collection includes both sides of two 1968 singles, although those were released on LP in the early '70s as part of Alvin Lee & Company. ~ All Music Guide

PAT TRAVERS - Fidelis (2010)
Five years after his last studio release of all new material and a delay in releasing this new album, 'Fidelis' finally hit the Heat of the Streets in March 2010. Pat Travers has, as the title of his seminal second album sests, been 'Makin' Magic' for three and a half decades and in that time has produced his own brand of rhythm & blues melodic rock and roll including slices of Hendrix-esque hard rock fusion, traditional r&b, eighties rock, a blues period throughout most of the nineties (similar to Gary Moore's transition from guitar hero to blues virtuoso), and a full circle return to the Pat Travers brand and Pat Travers Band sound of guitar riffing rock 'n' roll and blues rock, as heard on 2005's 'PT=MC2' and this latest offering. This hard rocking blues masterpiece is Travers long awaited studio album in the true Pat Travers signature style, in your face and full of big guitars. Being the first studio album in 5 years, Travers has put heart and soul into every note he recorded.

JOHN LENNON - Anthology (1998)
THE JOHN LENNON ANTHOLOGY is a 4-CD box set containing more than 100 previously unreleased tracks and a 60-page booklet including liner notes by Yoko Ono, Anthony DeCurtis, John Lennon and Rob Stevens. During the great John Lennon revival of the late '80s, Yoko Ono licensed to have the Westwood One Radio Network air scores of unreleased home recordings and demos as the Lost Lennon Tapes radio show. At the time, there was endless speculation about when highlights would be released, likely as a box set. The proposed set never materialized, yet most of the material was heavily bootlegged, as the producers and Ono must have suspected. Despite the bootlegs, Ono didn't agree to an official collection of unreleased Lennon material until 1998, after the Beatles' Anthology series proved a critical and commercial success. Hence, the birth of Lennon's Anthology - a four-disc box set, comprised entirely of unreleased home recordings, demos, and outtakes, many of which have never been previously bootlegged. As it's constructed, it's more of an aural biography than a music album. All the dialogue snippets, half-finished songs, throwaways, and parodies ensure that it's never casual listening, yet that very approach creates an intriguing portrait of Lennon -- a portrait of the man, not the artist. As such, there aren't really any forgotten treasures buried on the collection, even if many of these songs and takes are either completely unheard of or legendary among collecting circles. For every small pleasure, such as the Cheap Trick-backed version of "I'm Losing You," there is a small disappointment, such as how the Dylan diatribe, "Serve Yourself," doesn't quite live up to its legend. Ultimately, it doesn't matter if there are no major works or revelations, just a few good alternate tracks, because Anthology goes a long way toward capturing Lennon with all of his strengths and weaknesses. ~ cduniverse.com

ROLLING STONES - Exile On Main St. (1972) [2010 Remaster]
"Exile on Main St." is the tenth studio album by The Rolling Stones. Released as a double LP in May 1972, it draws on many genres including rock & roll, blues, country and soul and calypso. Exile on Main St. was initially greeted by reviewers with condemnation or high praise, but it has since become almost universally regarded as a masterpiece. A remastered version of the album (in Europe on May 17, 2010 and in the United States on May 18, 2010), featuring 10 new tracks, including "Plundered My Soul", "Dancing in the Light", "Following the River" and "Pass the Wine" as well as alternate versions of "Soul Survivor" and "Loving Cup". - wikipedia
2010 reissue of the classic Stones album housed in a super-jewel case (to complete 'remasters' box set). Regarded as one of the greatest albums in Rock 'n' Roll history and one of the most defining of the Stones' catalogue. Upon its release more than three decades ago, Exile On Main Street innovatively wove varying musical genres, instruments and even artists into a compelling rhythmic masterpiece. The original 18-track double-album was recorded in various stages at multiple locations, including Olympic Studios in London, Keith Richard's mansion Nellcote in France, and in Los Angeles where the literal Main Street influenced the album title. These atypical circumstances surrounding the recording process greatly affected the album's outcome which was highly reflective and influenced by the sociopolitical turbulence that marked the late `60s and early `70s. - amazon.com

LITTLE MILTON - Welcome To The Club: The Essential Chess Recordings (1994)
He may not be a household name, but die-hard blues fans know Little Milton as a superb all-around electric bluesman - a soulful singer, an evocative guitarist, an accomplished songwriter, and a skillful bandleader. He's often compared to the legendary B.B. King - as well as Bobby "Blue" Bland - for the way his signature style combines soul, blues, and R&B, a mixture that helped make him one of the biggest-selling bluesmen of the '60s (even if he's not as well-remembered as King). As time progressed, his music grew more and more orchestrated, with strings and horns galore. He maintained a steadily active recording career all the way from his 1953 debut on Sam Phillips' legendary Sun label, with his stunning longevity including notable stints at Chess (where he found his greatest commercial success), Stax, and Malaco... ~ All Music Guide

OTIS TAYLOR - Clovis People - Vol.3 (2010)
Otis Taylor digs the past. Whether it's the songs he wrote a decade ago, or ancient civilizations that lived more than 10,000 years ago, he's drawn to stories from another time, and he's compelled to retell them in a way that's relevant in the modern day. On Clovis People, Vol. 3, Taylor writes his own history. It's the ideal project for the architect of a sparse and hypnotic style that has come to be known as "trance blues." Taylor has spent his career crafting songs that are wide open to interpretation -- thematically as well as structurally. "I give people a starting point, and then they can take it where they want to take it," he explains. "That's true for the people playing my music as well as the people listening to it. That's how art should be. A person looking at a painting should be able to interpret it in whatever way he wants. The more words you put into a song, the less freedom the listener has to decide what it means." The album title is inspired by a recent scientific discovery very close to Taylor's home in Boulder, Colorado. Barely 100 yards from the edge of his property, archeologists dug up a cache of tools and other implements belonging to a civilization known as the Clovis people, who walked the earth briefly about 13,000 years ago and then mysteriously disappeared. "I just thought it was a cool title," says Taylor. "I went back to my musical past with these songs. That's why I called it Volume 3. There really is no Volume 1 or 2. My music only goes back about ten years, but there's something about reaching back to an earlier time and revisiting the stories of the past from a new perspective that I find compelling." - amazon.com

PETER WOLF - Midnight Souvenirs (2010) ![]()
For some, Peter Wolf is the energetic singer of a handful of major hits for The J. Geils Band - “Centerfold,” “Freeze Frame,” and “Love Stinks.” For others, he’s the genre-spanning solo artist whose 2002 album Rolling Stone ranked among its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Yet those highlights barely scratch the biographical surface of a man who became friends with blues greats Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker; as a child painted in the studio of Norman Rockwell; as a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston roomed with director David Lynch; was the founding program director and disc jockey at Boston’s acclaimed FM station WBCN; and led a band for which U2 was once the opening act. “Early in my life I committed myself to two lovers--music and painting,” says Wolf at his Boston home, “and each feeds the other. I’m the kind of guy who usually sees his glass as half-empty, but it’s full when I’m doing work, whether music or art, that’s worthwhile, that touches that spark of creation. To give birth to music, to hear it come alive, brings meaning to my life and hopefully that music inspires others.”
Wolf’s seventh solo album, Midnight Souvenirs, produced by Wolf and Kenny White (who also co-produced Sleepless and 1998's Fools Parade, celebrated as one of the "50 most influential albums of the '90s" by Rolling Stone), is his first since 2002’s lauded Sleepless. Featuring duets with country great Merle Haggard, indie heroine Neko Case, and Grammy® Award winner Shelby Lynne, Midnight Souvenirs embraces rock, R&B, blues, folk and country in a way that has distinguished Wolf’s entire career. - amazon.com

CAROLE KING & JAMES TAYLOR - Live At The Troubadour (2010)
In November of 1970 James Taylor and Carole King first performed together at the Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. Taylor had just released his debut album for the Beatles' newly formed Apple Records and King was finding her way as a first time solo performer even though by then she was a famous songwriter with a string of hits for other artists. When they returned to the club for a two-week co-headlining run in 1971 their lives were somewhat different. That summer Taylor's "Fire and Rain" was topping the charts and King's landmark Tapestry was on its way to making her a music superstar.
Thirty-six years later, in November 2007, James Taylor, Carole King and members of their renowned original band "The Section" (featuring guitarist Danny Kortchmar, bassist Leland Sklar and drummer Russell Kunkel) returned to the Troubadour for a three-night, six-show run to celebrate the venue's 50th anniversary. Those historic shows are documented in Live at the Troubadour. This remarkable recording, culled from these unforgettable shows, features 15 songs including stunning performances of the pair's most beloved hits such as Carole King's "So Far Away," "It's Too Late," and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" as well as James Taylor's "Carolina in My Mind," "Sweet Baby James," and "Fire and Rain," to name just a few. - amazon.com

BONNIE LEE - Sweetheart Of The Blues (1995)
Bonnie Lee cut her first full-length album, Sweetheart of the Blues, in 1995, nearly 30 years after she established herself as a staple of the Chicago scene. During those years, she sang constantly, and it's clear from the first note that this album is the work of a seasoned pro. Lee pretty much sticks to standards like "Baby, What You Want Me to Do," "Walking Blues" and "That's All Right," but that's all right, because it gives her the opportunity to wail. And wail she does, proving she's a fine soul-blues vocalist, capable of great things. She doesn't reach greatness here, but Sweetheart of the Blues is a classy set of Chicago blues. It's just too bad that it took her so long to cut the record. - cduniverse.com

JOE COCKER - Heart & Soul (2004) ![]()
![]()
![]()
Since his soulful, slowed-down version of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends" put him on the pop-music map, Joe Cocker has been particularly savvy in choosing outstanding material. HEART & SOUL proves Cocker's uncanny knack for picking listener favorites and ones that suit his distinctively red, raspy voice, no less, hasn't diminished over time. Contemporary rock-radio classics take the lion's share of the set here, with an exception made for Leiber & Stoller (Cocker's stirring rendition of "I [Who Have Nothing]" is particularly notable). The emotional depth and pathos inherent in U2's "One" and R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" are perfect vehicles for the singer's impassioned approach and sandpaper pipes, and Cocker makes every pause and melodic nuance count with his gut-wrenching delivery. John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" and Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed", two post-Beatles classics, are dusted off and given fine readings here. His versions of "What's Going On" and "Chain of Fools" effectively go toe-to-toe with the definitive versions by Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin, respectively. Cocker holds up admirably, and, in the end, turns in one of his most satisfying releases in years. - cduniverse.com

SHA NA NA - 40th Annyversary (2009)
Sha Na Na parlayed their straight-ahead '50s rock & roll revivalism into a successful touring career, even if they were never as popular on record as they were live. The group's image and style were unabashedly anachronistic, as they covered '50s pop and doo wop standards, slicked their hair back in the greaser fashion, and dressed in flamboyant '50s costumes. Sha Na Na formed at Columbia University in 1968 and quickly built a name for itself with live performances, often at the Fillmore East, featuring such theatrics as a dance contest for audience members. The original lineup consisted of vocalists Rob Leonard, Scott Powell, Johnny Contardo, Frederick "Denny" Greene, Richard "Ritchie" Joffe, and Don York, plus guitarists Chris Donald, Elliot Cahn, and Henry Gross, bassist Bruce Clarke, drummer John "Jocko" Marcellino, pianists "Screamin'" Scott Simon and John "Bowzer" Bauman, and former Danny and the Juniors saxophonist Leonard Baker. Sha Na Na's big break came with a booking at the Woodstock Festival in 1969; they caught on with the public and began a string of appearances at rock & roll venues and nightclubs. Gross left for a solo career in 1970 and scored a Top Ten hit six years later with "Shannon," something his old group was never able to do; Sha Na Na was largely a live act playing on nostalgia and entertainment value, which did not translate as well on record. In spite of internal problems including nervous breakdowns and the death of member Vincent Taylor from a heroin overdose in 1974, the group peaked in popularity in the late '70s, hosting its own syndicated television show from 1977 to 1981 and appearing in the 1978 film Grease. Screamin' Scott Simon co-wrote the song "Sandy" for the film; meanwhile, Jon "Bowzer" Bauman continued his television career, co-hosting a morning show in Los Angeles and guesting frequently on several game shows. JONNY LANG - Live At The Ryman (2010) ![]()
![]()
![]()
If the blues is all about the crossroads, Jonny Lang is standing in the right place. A decade into the new century, Lang is the ideal representative of a new and innovative generation of blues artists – one who respects and reveres the traditions of the past hundred-plus years, yet isn’t afraid to embrace more complex and evolved genres and graft them to the blues foundation to create a hybrid sound that is both traditional and fresh at the same time. Indeed, on any given night, sweat-drenched crowds at a Jonny Lang performance are likely to hear shades of R&B, soul, gospel, hard rock, funk and more. All of it is packaged in a high-octane guitar-and-vocal attack from an artist who has covered countless miles since his teenage years, and continues to explore new horizons with unbridled enthusiasm.
Live at the Ryman is a compelling glimpse of a young guitarist at the height of his creative powers, but one who is still open to exploring the depth and range of his blues music and its relationship to R&B, soul, rock, gospel, funk and so many other emotionally riveting genres. This live album, recorded at the famed Nashville theatre, is not to be missed!

LOS LOBOS - El Cancionero Mas y Mas [4CD Box Set] (2000)
The Los Lobos fan might reasonably ask what--besides length and a wonderful accompanying booklet--Más y Más has over 1993's two-CD Just Another Band from East L.A.. The answer is longwinded: here are album tracks (anywhere from four to eight from each studio album), outtakes, demos, and live cuts, as well as selections from tribute albums, soundtracks, and side projects. Some highlights that weren't on the earlier collection include a 1983 rockabilly sizzler, "We're Gonna Rock," the similarly charged "Rip It Up" (an '87 outtake from La Bamba), Richard Thompson's "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" (from the '94 tribute Beat the Retreat), a live take on the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" (from a '93 television tribute), "Route 90" (from the pristine Lobos children's collection, Papa's Dream), and a '97 live version of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" with Sheryl Crow guesting on vocals. This doesn't even take into account the songs from six soundtracks and a personal fave, "Alone in a Crowd" (from I Only Wrote This Song for You: A Tribute to Johnny Thunders) and a fab take on Doug Sahm's "She's About a Mover" from '96. This and more pushes Más y Más out of the group of multi-CD boxes devoted to defunct artists and into the camp of justly deserved career overviews created while the subjects are still in full flight. - amazon.com
The only 4-CD collection spanning the legendary East L.A. band’s entire quarter-century recording career! Includes the best sides from nine albums, plus previously unreleased recordings, live tracks, cuts from movie soundtracks, tribute and promo albums.

BEAU JOCQUE & THE ZYDECO HI-ROLLERS - Check It Out, Lock It In, Crank It Up! (1998)
Easily the biggest zydeco star of the 1990s, Beau Jocque heralded the rise of the genre's new, urbanized style; infusing his high-octane sound with elements of rock, soul, hip-hop and even reggae, he bridged the gap between traditional Creole culture and contemporary music to create a funky, bass-heavy hybrid calculated for maximum mainstream appeal. Rounder has released some prime examples of contemporary zydeco, as this release from Beau Jocque and the Zydeco Hi-Rollers makes evident. Beau Jocque and company pound out some high-energy music here. This is not meant for relaxed listening; this is party music. Good-time classic "Keep a Knockin'" is given the full treatment, including a killer Hammond B3 solo. "Slide and Dip It" comes in two mixes: one zydeco and one "party dip." Both are guaranteed to get your house rocking. "Going Down to the Country," on the other hand, is a raw swamp blues while "She Wants to Sell My Monkey" is all but indescribable. Top these off with an outrageous cover of funk standard "Tighten Up" and you have a nonstop winner. These guys put the "Z" in zydeco! - amazon.com

The music performed by Mel Melton & the Wicked Mojos at the mythical Papa Mojo's Roadhouse ranges from both vocal and instrumental blues to zydeco, from Cajun to R&B and boogie-woogie. It makes for a fast-moving, spirited, and generally unpredictable show, featuring Mel Melton on vocals and harmonica along with guitarist Ricky Oliverez and many guests. The overall results may not be innovative or virtuosic, but they are certainly enjoyable and perfect for any New Orleans R&B-flavored party. ALANNAH MYLES - Alannah Myles (1989)
Alannah Myles is a Canadian singer-songwriter, the daughter of Canadian broadcast pioneer Bill Byles. In 1988, she released her eponymous debut album. In 1990, "Black Velvet", a single from that album, was a worldwide smash hit and won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female.
With a hard rock bluesy guitar that later isn't a bad imitation of early ZZ Top, and a rousing cry in that rough voice of hers, kind of a more refined variation on Joan Jett, Alannah Myles kicks off her debut album with "Still Got This Thing For You." That's followed by the second single, "Love Is", which is punctuated by a throbbing bass and a 80's hard-rock guitar. Here's how she defines love: "Love is ( love is )/Heaven to the lonely/Show me/What you want me to do/Cause love is/What I got for you" The slow bluesy "Black Velvet", with more of that punctuated bass, is of course, hands down, the best song here, and the one that topped the charts in 1990. Who can forget that chorus: "Black velvet and that little boy's smile/Black velvet with that slow southern style/A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees/Black velvet if you please." There's another lyric that's visually cool: "The sun is settin' like molasses in the sky." However, don't let naysayers tell you she was a one-hit wonder. There's more great stuff on this album and on her followup, the more melancholy Rockinghorse.

POCO - Original Album Classics (2008)
Poco rose from the ashes of Buffalo Springfield in the late 1960s when Richie Furay, Jim Messina and Rusty Young decided to form a new band. Commercial success was far from steady but the band enjoyed several placings in the Top 20. Although the band first split in 1984, they have reunited since and still play today. Both the debut album Pickin’ Up the Pieces and the eponymous follow-up failed to translate their good reviews into sales. Band members became increasingly despondent and with 1973’s Crazy Eyes marking their commercial zenith by reaching a distinctly average No.38, they left their record label two albums later. The record label switch did little to reverse their fortunes and their progress continued much as before. Several line-up changes and albums on, they finally released a record which seemed to vindicate all their earlier effort. Legend (1978) went gold and rose to the No.14 spot in the charts. “Crazy Love” and “Heart of the Night” from the album also hit the singles charts. But it was a flash in the pan and they returned to their lacklustre sales with subsequent records and in 1985 the band entered a five year hiatus. When they returned their progress was much as before. Though they continue to tour and release albums to the present day it seems they may never recapture the success they never really had.

DEANNA BOGART - Real Time (2006)
Down Beat magazine describes Deanna Bogart as "an extravagant entertainer", and entertain is what Bogart does best. The Maryland-based blues and boogie pianist / saxophonist combines the energy of boogie woogie with contemporary blues, jazz, R&B and country. "The goal when we play live," says Bogart, "is to create a fusion of all these different musical styles with the blues and boogie genuinely at the core."
After interning in western swing and R&B with Cowboy Jazz and Root Boy Slim, Bogart has fronted her own tight ensemble for over fifteen years. Playing dazzling piano and soulful saxophone, Deanna’s added the energy of boogie-woogie, contemporary blues, country, and Nora Jones-like jazz to create a unique fusion of musical styles. Her vocals and songwriting are as full of vitality as her playing – savvy, sensuous, and deep.

PETER FRAMPTON - When All The Pieces Fit (1989)
Frampton seemed increasingly directionless as the '80s dawned. He cut his hair prior to the release of 1981's Breaking All the Rules, but the new image failed to send it higher than the lower reaches of the Top 50. The following year's The Art of Control was an unequivocal flop, and Frampton retreated from the music business for several years. He returned on Virgin in 1986 with Premonition, and though it wasn't a smash hit, he did get substantial rock radio airplay for the cut "Lying." The following year, Frampton played on onetime schoolmate David Bowie's Never Let Me Down album and accompanying tour. He recorded another new album, When All the Pieces Fit, for Atlantic in 1989, and had been planning a reunion with Steve Marriott not long before Marriott's tragic death in a 1991 house fire.

THE EQUALS - First Among Equals: The Greatest Hits (1994)
An energetic East London combo, the Equals balanced maximum R&B with plenty of pop, plus a few nods to vocalist Eddy Grant's West Indian background. Grant, born in British Guyana, moved to England with his family at the age of 12, and settled in a council estate named Hornsey Rise in northeast London. Four years later, he formed the Equals with schoolmates Lincoln Gordon (guitar), his twin brother Dervin Gordon (originally the vocalist), Pat Lloyd (guitar, then bass), and drummer John Hall. The band began gigging around London, amazing audiences with their apparently limitless energy and a distinct style fusing pop, blues, and R&B plus elements of ska and bluebeat. By 1965, the Equals began doing dates in Europe as well, and released their first single on President Records. Though "Hold Me Closer" didn't perform on the charts, DJs began playing the flip side and by 1967 "Baby, Come Back" had hit the top of the charts in Germany and the Netherlands. One year later, the single hit number one in Britain as well, and brushed the charts in America. Subsequent singles lacked the immediate punch of "Baby, Come Back," however, and the Equals landed only two more Top Ten hits: "Viva Bobby Joe" and "Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys," the latter an apt message track from one of the few racially mixed bands of the era. Grant left the Equals for a solo career in 1971, and though the band never charted again, they remained a popular live act, especially on the continent. Drummer Ronald Telemacque and guitarists Dave Martin and Frankie Hepburn were later added to the lineup. ~ All Music Guide

Eddy Grant is a Plaisance, Guyana born musician. When he was still a young boy, his parents emigrated to London, UK, where he settled. He lived in Kentish Town and went to school at the Acland Burghley Secondary Modern at Tufnell Park. He had his first Number One hit in 1968, when he was the lead guitarist and main songwriter of the multiracial group The Equals, with his self-penned song "Baby Come Back". The tune also later topped the UK Singles Chart again when covered by Pato Banton. Notably, he openly used his songwriting for political purposes, especially against the then-current apartheid regime of South Africa. The Equals were a pop/reggae/rock group that formed in North London, England in 1965. Eddy Grant, then sporting dyed blonde hair, founded the group. Also in the original line-up were the twin brothers Derv and Lincoln Gordon, as well as John Hall and Pat Lloyd. - wikipedia

This followup to Cocker's comeback album (1987's UNCHAIN MY HEART) boasts the same band, the same production team, and the same esthetic approach, i.e. it's a savvy mix of slick late '80s power ballads and cannily chosen cover songs. The latter, not surprisingly, provide the meat of the album. Cocker apparently relates to the sexual paranoia in Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man," and he gives it an appropriately volcanic rendering. Even better, he seems to locate a similar feeling of dread in the old Little Willie John/Peggy Lee chestnut "Fever," and he positively out- Elvis's Elvis with his take on the similarly-themed title song. Guilt never sounded so good. - cduniverse.com

ROBBIE WILLIAMS - Greatest Hits (2004)
Greatest Hits chronicles the remarkable journey of Mr Robert Williams, from being the "fat dancer from Take That" (c. Noel Gallagher) to the multi-million pound jewel in EMI’s crown. Assembled in chronological order, all the hits are here, except for his initial solo outing "Freedom", and it’s interesting to see how his sound evolves from wannabe Britpop buffoon on the sub-Oasis pubrock of "Old Before I Die" to the subtle captivating melodies of "Feel" and "Come Undone". There are so many great tracks that it’s impossible to list them all, but highlights have to be the barnstorming "Let Me Entertain You", the bouncy, floor-filling "Rock DJ" and the song that madeth the man, "Angels". The two latest additions to his canon--"Radio" and "Misunderstood" clearly have one eye on the past, the other on the future – with the latter an instant classic Robbie ballad from the Bridget Jones 2 soundtrack and the former a foray into the world of electro pop that sounds like a warped Human League track from the 1980s. This has to be Robbie’s forte, his ability to make great pop records that always sound fresh and full of energy. Every home should have a copy of this album, and chances are, by the end of 2004, most of them will.
After five studio albums and nineteen singles, this greatest hits collection brings together nineteen classic Williams moments for the first time. It features his first UK number one 'Millennium', and the hugely popular 'Angels'. Also included are two new recordings, the single 'Radio' and 'Misunderstood' taken from the Bridget Jones' Diary II soundtrack. - amazon.com

ERIC BIBB - Spirit I Am (2008)
Eric Bibb: "Spirit I Am" is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting projects of my career. It puts together 2 records : "Get Onboard" my official album and "Field Recordings" a special abum which contains seven traditional songs cut just with my guitar. This special project including these two albums will be distributed only in Benelux and France through the Dixiefrog label. These two albums were recorded in Nashville, with some fabulous new musical friends, it also features some wonderful cameo performances by Bonnie Raitt (on slide guitar), and Ruthie Foster (singing a duet with me). Style-wise, it’s a further exploration into the place where blues meets gospel and soul.

V.A. - Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute - Lenny (2009)
Vintage Guitar Magazine's Eric Shoaf writes about the Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute "Lenny":
"This collection of aural soundscapes, titled simply "Lenny", is a tribute to the memory of Stevie Ray Vaughan and a celebration of his accomplishments and influence on a generation of guitar players. Within these musical portraits, talented guitar players interpret Stevie's music and capture in instrumental form the caliber of his brilliance as well as the fundamental essence of his music. Think of these sound paintings as individual tributes, each as unique as Stevie, each a true original while praising his influence, each a memorial to a musician who died too young. As I listen, I am transported back to that day in 1983 when I stood in awe of that man's talent, moved by his deep feeling for the music he played." LUCKY PETERSON - Heart Of Pain (2010)
Lucky Peterson's journey through the blues has been a long and labyrinthine one. A child prodigy, he scored his first hit at the age of six, appeared on both the Tonight Show and Ed Sullivan, and was a longtime member of Bobby "Blue" Bland's traveling and recording band before he got his own shot as a leader in the '80s. He's a notable guitarist who also plays a hell of a piano and a Hammond B-3, is a fine vocalist and arranger. He's recorded jazz and gospel albums -- he collaborated with Mavis Staples on the excellent Spirituals & Gospel: Dedicated to Mahalia Jackson. Heart of Pain is a return to (mostly) contemporary Chicago-style blues, on which Peterson plays lead guitar, keyboards, and sings. He is backed by his current road band and a three-piece horn section.
"Heart of Pain" is his third recording for Great Britain's JSP imprint, and quite solid. It contains 11 tracks of old-school Chicago blues beginning with a rollicking reading of John Steadman's and Steve Washington's "Out of the Frying Pan and into the Fire" (they wrote the majority of the tunes here).
TRACKS: 01. Out Of The Frying Pan 02. Heart Of Pain 03. A Woman Don't Care 04. I Will Survive 05. Age Ain't Nothing But A Number 06. Oh Baby 07. He's the Answer 08. Brown Can't Be Bad 09. Lucky's 88 10. Bound To Make You Love Me 11. I Won't Be Fooled

LINDSEY BOULLT - Composition (2007) ![]()
An established guitarist, composer and instructor in the San Francisco area, Boullt is a teacher at the renowned Guitar Institute. He is also the founder of the “Musician’s Showcase”, a highly respected forum for up and coming musicians, bands and students in the San Francisco Bay area. Containing ten original compositions and including an impressive cast of musicians, “Composition” is an intense album charged with influences ranging from metal and middle eastern music to jazz-rock and everything in between. Boullt is a musician of an eclectic nature. The album features artists such as violinist Jerry Goodman, keyboardist Derek Sherinian, bassist Stu Hamm, and drummer Atma Anur among others; a great band that feels at home playing complex passages and odd time meters. “Composition” has enough punch throughout to keep you listening. It is strong and somewhat dark. Boullt with no doubt is a great player, not only he has the chops, but he has great musicality as well. - modernguitarist.com

WILLIE NELSON - Naked Willie (2009)
After establishing himself as a major Nashville songwriter (he wrote "Crazy" for Patsy Cline, among others), Willie Nelson signed his first serious artist contract at RCA in 1964. At that time, the producers and A&R men like Chet Atkins were boss. Singers weren't allowed to select arrangements, musicians, studios - any of the key factors in making the records the artist has in mind. Willie was constantly frustrated by the syrupy strings, vocal group choruses and generally "slick" final product. Fast forward to 2008. Willie and long-time harmonica player Mickey Raphael are casually wondering what those records would or could sound like if only the multi-track tapes could be tracked down and the songs re-mixed with the original intent in mind. Gone are the strings and gangs of back-up singers. Gone, in fact is most of the production that always "ruined" the songs. This album was released on March 17, 2009, on the Legacy Recordings label. The album include remixes of recordings from 1966-1970, stripped-down without orchestration or background vocals. The concept of the album is similar to the Beatles' Let It Be... Naked project released several years before Naked Willie.
TRACKS: 01. Bring Me Sunshine 02. Following Me Around 03. The Ghost 04. Happiness Lives Next Door 05. I Just Dropped By 06. Jimmy's Road 07. I Let My Mind Wander 08. If You Could See What's Going Through My Mind 09. Johnny One Time 10. The Local Memory 11. The Party's Over 12. Where Do You Stand 13. When We Live Again 14. What Can You Do To Me Now 15. ROGER WATERS - The Wall: Live in Berlin 1990 [Original Recording Remastered 2003]
Pink Floyd's 1979 double album "The Wall" was that strangest of beasts: a concept album, driven by a tortured rock-star protagonist, so obtusely personal it sometimes bordered on the inscrutable. But history was kind to the Roger Waters-spawned epic; when the communist bloc crumbled in 1989, taking the symbolic Berlin Wall with it, it inspired the ex-Floyd bassist and singer to frame his most ambitious work as another familiar tortured-rock-star conceit: the all-star benefit-concert TV broadcast. The shifting tides of history have undermined much of this remastered, double-disc soundtrack's momentous context, leaving behind a larger-than-life spectacle that, depending on one's viewpoint, could represent rock's most overarching populism--or the beginning of the end. Still, the star-heavy concept yields some unexpected surprises, from the Scorpions' bracing opening blast through haunting reinventions of "Mother" (Sinead O'Connor) and "Goodbye Blue Sky" (Joni Mitchell)--performances that blunt the oft-suspect misogyny of Waters's sprawling tale. Bryan Adams injects some vocal fire into "Empty Spaces" and "Young Lust," but by the time Waters, company, a massed German orchestra, choir, and the Military Orchestra of the Soviet Union reach the album's crescendos the event has gone so far over the top that it seems like nothing short of a neo-operatic Andrew Lloyd Webber wet dream.
Hailed as a musical, visual and historic landmark, Roger Waters' The Wall - Live In Berlin has been remixed and remastered (by Nick Griffiths, the original engineer) for the first time since its original 1990 premiere. The CD contains the entire two-hour-plus concert, featuring performances by Bryan Adams, The Band, Thomas Dolby, Cyndi Lauper, Sinead O'Connor, Van Morrison, Scorpions and more. - amazon.com
