PAUL McCARTNEY - Live In Los Angeles (2010)
This CD was given away free with the British national newspaper, The Mail. "This has to be the most surreal gig ever. The management has asked me to point out no shoplifting please." Paul McCartney, June 27, 2007.
It was not your average gig, even by Paul McCartney standards: A free show, inside the mammoth Amoeba Music Hollywood record store, starring the former Beatle himself. A far cry from McCartney's usual stadium shows, the Amoeba gig was an up close and personal once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. In the packed audience, small children and grandparents rubbed elbows with the likes of Ringo Starr and Woody Harrelson, yet the moment McCartney dove into opener 'Drive My Car' the young and the old, the famous and the common person stood equally within the bond of song. This is what makes Paul McCartney such a huge presence His music seamlessly crosses over from generation to generation with each making his songs their own. Few things in this life can bring total strangers together as one. On a Wednesday summer night, at a record store in Hollywood, California, nearly one thousand people stood tall and sang 'Hey Jude' along with Sir Paul McCartney, and for a few moments everything was good in the world. No, it certainly was not your average gig, and those in attendance surely sensed Paul felt the same way. "I'd like to take a little moment to take this all in," he said. "I was there. I was there at Amoeba." Marcus Kagler, Hollywood.

JUNIOR BROWN - The Austin Experience: Live At The Continental Club (2005)
A singer and demon guitarist whose raucous blend of country and rock & roll helped make him a successful crossover act, Junior Brown was born in 1952 and raised in the backwoods of Kirksville, IN. He first learned to play the piano from his father, and was exposed to country through radio and TV, becoming a fan of Ernest Tubb's music and television program. He became a professional musician at the tail end of the '60s, while still in his teens. After honing his guitar skills in relative anonymity throughout the '70s, Brown became an instructor at the Hank Thompson School of Country Music, an affiliate of Rogers State College in Oklahoma. There, while teaching under the auspices of steel guitar legend Leon McAuliffe, a onetime member of Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, Brown met "the lovely Miss Tanya Rae," a student whom he would later marry in 1988 and who eventually joined his band as a rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist. At the same time, a dream prompted him to set about creating an instrument fusing a six-string guitar with its steel counterpart. Contacting guitar maker Michael Stevens in 1985, he developed the "guit-steel," a double-necked guitar combining the standard instrument with the steel. (A decade later, the two men reunited to update the "guit-steel," and Brown's cherry axe, "Big Red," was born.) After moving to Austin, TX, Brown and his group became the house band at the city's Continental Club, where strong word-of-mouth eventually earned them a record deal. He made his long-awaited album debut in 1993 with 12 Shades of Brown, which featured a tribute to his biggest influence, "My Baby Don't Dance to Nothing but Ernest Tubb." It also showcased his often-stunning instrumental work, and blended Western swing, honky tonk, and electrified Bakersfield country. Guit With It followed later in the year, and like its predecessor, was met with considerable critical acclaim. After a five-song stopgap EP, 1995's Junior High, Brown returned in 1996 with Semi-Crazy, which continued in the vein established on his previous recordings. The Long Walk Back followed two years later, and displayed a bit more rockabilly flavor. Brown issued his fifth album, Mixed Bag, in 2001. His next record, 2004's Down Home Chrome, found him on a new label (Telarc) but with the same tried and true sound. Curb released a twelve-song Greatest Hits collection in June of 2005, followed by Telarc's Live at the Continental Club: The Austin Experience later that September. ~ All Music Guide

The captain of the Blues Company has steered his weatherproof vessel with great care through all the trends of the music market. "O`Town Grooves" features a new studio and bassist (the proven jazz musician Arnold Ogrodnik). All songs are also new, mostly penned by Toscho but some pieces were written by guitarist Mike Titre. Two tracks were written by Bucky Lindsey, who has composed several songs for the great Joe Cocker. Thankfully, the style is not new but the familiar mixture of crisp Chicago Blues with furious guitar solos, emotionally moving ballads, a touch of soul, serious jazz grooves, funk and the poignant interjections of the Fabulous BC Horns.

SOLOMON BURKE - Nashville (2006)
Soul legend Solomon Burke harbored a desire to sing country tunes ever since his early days at Atlantic, but the powers-that-be wouldn't let their golden goose take the gamble. Four decades down the line, he finally got the opportunity, and he embraced it with open arms. Produced by twang titan Buddy Miller, NASHVILLE is the third album of Burke's "comeback" period that began with 2002's DON'T GIVE UP ON ME. NASHVILLE's two predecessors found Burke tackling often ill-fitting tunes by a bevy of rockers, but taking a country turn sounds completely natural for the 66-year-old soul man. Crucial to this aesthetic success is the fact that Burke and Miller avoided the obvious dusty honky-tonk warhorses. Instead, Burke invests Tom T. Hall's "That's How I Got to Memphis" with stirring pathos, plays the scorned lover on Miller's "Does My Ring Burn Your Finger," and fills Kevin Welch's "Millionaire" with warmth and grit. New tunes written to order by Gillian Welch and Patty Griffin keep things fresh, and guest vocals from Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton keep King Solomon squarely rooted in the NASHVILLE of his dreams. - cduniverse.com

SAM MOORE - Overnight Sensational (2006)
The lead voice of Stax Records' powerhouse soul duo Sam and Dave returns to reclaim his legacy here with a collection of familiar r&b catalog choices framed by slick, decidedly contemporary productions. If the project's crowded supporting cast - Springsteen, Clapton, Wynonna, Sting, Bon Jovi, Winwood, Paul Rodgers, Mariah Carey, Vince Gill and Billy Gibbons among the most notable -- sometimes makes Moore seem like a guest on his own album, their admittedly marketing-driven presence nonetheless helps showcase a seminal soul artist for an American Idol-smitten generation that seems to have taken him for granted (hardly a surprise that project producer Randy Jackson is best known as an AI judge). Yet Moore's gritty, expressive voice can't be denied on the best of it, whether on the simmering gospel fervor of the Wynonna/Bekka Bramlett/Bebe Winans-seasoned "I Can't Stand the Rain," the bluesy shuffle of "Better To Have and Not Need" with Springsteen joining in the chorus or a soulful "None of Us Are Free" featuring Sting. But, as Fantasia's turn on the unfortunate "Blame It On the Rain" argues, it's also an album whose tracks often frustratingly rise or fall in proportion to the contributions of its guests; less would definitely mean Moore here. - amazon.com

Unpled finds Rod reunited, for the first time in nearly twenty years, with Ron Wood, a fellow Faces band member. Rod performs some of the classics from his repertoire such as, “Tonight's the Night” and “Maggie May”, but also adds some new material such as “Having a Party” and “Highgate Shuffle”. The album title comes from a small joke Rod made during the taping. Six songs that were taped were not included on the subsequent album release. - wikipedia

COWBOY JUNKIES - Best Of Cowboy Junkies (2001)
Country rock band Cowboy Junkies were formed in Toronto, Canada by siblings Margo (vocals), Michael (guitar, songwriter) and Peter (drums) Timmins and lifelong friend Alan Anton (bass) in 1985. It is widely believed that the band have taken their name from Townes Van Zandt's song "Cowboy Junkies Lament" but the track was actually written in 1989 and seems to have been written for and inspired by the Cowboy Junkies.
Although the band have released more than 18 albums in their 15 year career their most commercially successful and critically acclaimed by far was the breathy and emotional lament The Trinity Session, released in 1988. The Trinity Session was recorded in a single day, with a single microphone in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Toronto. It includes covers of many old classic country and rock songs including "I'm So Lonesome I could Cry" by Hank Williams, "Sweet Jane" by the Velvet Underground (1969: The Velvet Underground Live version not Loaded version), "Walking After Midnight" by Patsy Cline and a new version of "Blue Moon", the old Elvis classic. The hauntingly sparse, acoustically spacious feel of The Trinity Session made it first a cult hit and eventually a modern day classic. Although Cowboy Junkies have never had similar success outside their native land since The Trinity Session, they remain a popular and successful band in Canada. - amazon.com

Breit is joined by organist Rob Gusevs, bassist Ian DeSouza, and drummer Gary Taylor. MEAT LOAF - Hang Cool Teddy Bear (2010)
Hang Cool Teddy Bear is the eleventh studio album by Meat Loaf. It was released on 19 April 2010 by Mercury Records in the UK and by Loud & Proud Records in the US on 11 May 2010, with global distribution handled by Universal Music Group.
Meat Loaf doesn't want peace on earth, he roars on the first track of this album; he just wants to go home. Go home? In his prime, Meat would have died before being such a party-pooper. But don't despair – he's simply voicing the thoughts of a fictional soldier, whose "story" furnishes the album's theme. Each song presents "a different scenario in his future", which makes a change from the monsters and bats that have inhabited previous records, but the narrative is really incidental to the music. Hang Cool, Teddy Bear is of a piece with the rest of his catalogue: the pounding guitars never slacken, emotions are writ very large and the lyrics rarely lack sly wit ("a bunch of losers I call my friends," he bawls on Los Angeloser). Less happily, the tempo never varies – this album desperately needs a ballad – and 13 unrelenting tracks is a good deal more than enough. - guardian.co.uk

Paul Young was the nexus at which British blue-eyed soul met '80s synth pop production. The result was a string of glorious hits, including the chart-topper, "Every Time You Go Away." Young was most convincing as a covers artist. His supple tenor, aided by smart, up-to-date arrangements, revived such worthy tracks as the Chi-Lites' "Oh Girl" and Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)". From Time to Time contains a good cross-section of Young's work, plus several new tracks, including a version of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" performed with Clannad and the international smash "Senza Una Donna", featuring Italian superstar Zucchero. While all four albums from which these tracks are drawn are excellent, this is the definitive collection of Young's best work.Q (10/91) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "..blessed with the voice of a genuine soul balladeer..." - amazon.com

RITA CHIARELLI - Sweet Paradise (2009)
Rita Chiarelli is one of the most exciting new singers in Canada. Her unique blend of rock and blues has been compared favorably to Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge, and Susan Tedeschi. In 2000, she was named the "top blues singer" at Canada's Maple Leaf Awards. The world's discovery of Chiarelli comes after years of her paying dues. Singing with Hamilton, Ontario-based group Tempest at the age of 15, she toured throughout North America with a nine-piece R&B band, Battleaxe, after graduating from high school. Chiarelli continued to sharpen her chops as a member of Toronto-based rockabilly pioneer Ronnie Hawkins' group. After a year, however, she moved to Italy, where she worked as a studio vocalist for six years. Returning to Canada in the late '80s, Chiarelli had her first success when her tune "Have You Seen My Shoes?," which was featured in the film Roadkill. Releasing her debut album, Road Rocket, in 1992, she took things a step further with her second effort, Just Gettin' Started, three years later. Produced by Jane Siberry-producer John Switzer, the album showcased Chiarelli's hook-laden songwriting, with all but one song -- a cover of Elvis Presley's "Love Me" -- original. Long John Baldry covered Chiarelli's song, "Midnight in Berlin," on his 1996 album Right to Sing the Blues. Breakfast at Midnight, released in 2001, includes such guests as ex-Band keyboardist Richard Bell and guitarist Colin Linden... - All Music Guide

BOB MARLEY - Songs of Freedom (1992)
When Songs of Freedom was released originally in 1992, it was a perfect complement to either a greatest hits collection like Legend or the entire collection of the reggae master's albums. Songs boasts enough of the recognizable from Marley's canon to address the hit seeker, but the set also reaches way, way back to include Marley's first single, the youthful "Judge Not" from 1962, and then closes more than four hours later with a 1980 live take of "Redemption Song" from his last concert. In between are live takes, studio remixes, and, of course, standard looks at Marley standards, playing together as a perfect balance between the familiar and the new. The flow of famous takes increases into CDs 3 and 4, where "No Woman, No Cry" appears from a 1976 set at the Roxy and where "Jammin'" and "Exodus" come in mixes that were new to fans in 1992. Of course these four CDs show in wide-angle view exactly how fantastic and commercially improbable Marley was. He was able to popularize tunes about both the repression of African nations and their liberation while also bringing to rock audiences an undeniably Jamaican music, breaking the U.S. and British geographic strongholds on the 1970s pop and rock marketplace. Never mind that he made Island Records' first fortune, he also created a body of work so lasting that a four-CD set heavy on alternate versions can stand out in any contemporary music collection. For the 1999 reissue of the original 1992 box set, no new music has been added. - amazon.com

ERIC CLAPTON - Hard Rock Calling (2008-06-28 Hyde Park, London) (2008) ![]()
"If someone had told me in Columbus at the end of the 2007 tour that the band could get this much better, it would have been very hard to believe for me. Not counting the backing vocalists (who were also great), there are five extraordinary musicians in this lineup. It is just fantastic to hear Eric and Doyle play the blues in a "no holds barred" rock band. From Tell the Truth and Key to the Highway to Hear but I'm Gone (which was like the Derek and the Dominos meets Curtis Mayfield) and Why Does Love, it was just phenomenal. Motherless Child really rocked with Abe and Willie. Little Queen of Spades was an epic version with spectacular solos by Eric and Doyle. Of the "hits," Before You Accuse Me was the best. Most of the encore, Crossroads, with Sheryl Crow, Robert Randolph, and John Mayer was fairly predictable, but the opening was quite interesting. All in all, a wonderful performance." - ericclapton-online.com

ISAAC HAYES - Ultimate Isaac Hayes: Can You Dig It? (2005)
Isaac Hayes's towering presence in the history of soul music is undeniable: aside from his role as one half of the legendary Porter/Hayes Stax Records songwriting team, his early-1970s albums revolutionized the sounds of the day with their lush, complex instrumentation, swirling, funky explorations, and extended track lengths. The title of this three-disc set, THE ULTIMATE ISAAC HAYES, pretty much says it all. Represented here are all of Hayes's signature tunes, including the wah-wah-driven, era-defining "Theme from SHAFT" and the spacious, symphonic "Walk On By." The two audio discs top out at close to 80 minutes each, giving full breadth to the artist's stylistic range and the stretched-out majesty of his arrangements. His transformative covers of Glen Campbell's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," Jerry Butler's "I Stand Accused," and Hank Williams's "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love With You)" are included, alongside rare singles, B-sides, and previously unreleased live cuts. The third disc is a DVD featuring live footage of Hayes's appearance at the 1972 Wattstax concert and footage from SOUTH PARK (on which Hayes supplied the voice of Chef). - cduniverse.com

JASON & THE SCORCHERS - Halcyon Times (2010) ![]()
2010 album from the veteran Roots rockers. Halcyon Times is no 'return to their roots'. It is instead a creative leap forward, showing the band at its peak, not on some sort of self-absorbed nostalgia trip. It's hard to pick a standout track - they are all that strong. Hodges' guitar work has never been better, full of style and inspired originality, while Ringenberg rocks like he is still 18, leaping off the edge of the world, laughing while doing it. Snibb and Collins supply that elusive, magic rock 'n' roll groove, full of energy but grounded in confident unhurried power. However, like all classic Rock records, Halcyon Times has more than enough moments of sublime grace to balance out the hormones. Fourteen songs deep, covering a staggering range of emotions and style, the album shows Jason & The Scorchers not only celebrating 30 years of creating music, but still expanding that creative envelope, still in command of their legacy. - amazon.com

V.A. - The Roots Of Ry Cooder (2002)
In his many-faceted career as a producer, session musician, solo artist, and soundtrack composer, Ry Cooder has drawn continually on the deep roots of American music, reinventing and refocusing the old into the new in a nearly seamless balancing act. This fine collection of vintage roots material from Britain's Catfish Records visits some of Cooder's musical sources and influences, and the result is a wonderful snapshot of 1920s and Depression era rural America. Included here are the natural storytelling talents of Sleepy John Estes on "Brownsville Blues," the haunting, primal pain of Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was the Night (Cold Was the Ground)," the dark joy of "Viola Lee Blues" by Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers, and the indignant Depression classic"How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live" by Blind Alfred Reed. The two-part "You Can't Stop a Tattler" by Washington Phillips is a chiming, charming and oddly contemporary-sounding delight. As a guide to the deep wellsprings of American music, Ry Cooder has been invaluable, and by compiling this collection of his sources, Catfish has given us a wonderful introduction to the music that came before Top 40, MTV and Clear Channel. ~ All Music Guide

DANNY BRYANT'S RED EYE BAND - Just As I Am (2010)
Danny Bryant's Redeye Band - Just As I Am Just As I Am is the seventh CD by Danny Bryant's Redeye Band. Like the previous six, it remains proof that the band is still one of the best blues/rock outfits on the scene. While the guitar is still front and center, there is now a shifted emphasis to the vocals. Fortunately, Bryant's voice is up to the task. He has always had a gritty, intense approach to his vocals and that is still the case here.
Danny Bryant was born in Hertfordshire England in July 1980. First hailed as a ‘young guitar prodigy’ Danny began playing guitar aged 15, turning professional just three years later, and in the last decade has paid his dues clocking up endless miles of travelling and approximately two thousand shows in many countries around the world. After a decade of hard toil he now gets the recognition he so well deserves, being acknowledged by those in the business as one of the cream of the crop of this generation of blues artists, ably backed by his rhythm section of his father Ken on bass and Trevor Barr on drums.

ANDREW JR. BOY JONES - Gettin' Real (2009)
Guitarist, songwriter and singer Andrew "Jr. Boy" Jones began working professionally at age 16 with Freddie King's backing band, the Thunderbirds. He got his first guitar from his uncle, jazz musician Adolphus Sneed. Jones cites an eclectic array of influences: Freddie King, Cornell Dupree and Larry Carlton. For many years, he's backed various Dallas-area vocalists on guitar, but in the mid-1990s, he came into his own as a vocalist with an album for JSP Records, I Need Time (1997), which showcases his crafty songwriting, great guitar playing, and powerful singing. In 1967, Jones joined Dallas-area vocalist Bobby Patterson's outfit, the Mustangs. Through most of the 1970s, Jones backed various artists, including Patterson, Johnnie Taylor and Charlie Robertson. In late 1987, he went to California and joined the Silent Partners with bassist Russell Jackson and drummer Tony Coleman, the latter of whom is best known for his work with B.B. King's orchestra. Jones recorded with Bay-area piano player and singer Katie Webster on her critically praised Alligator Records album, Swamp Boogie Queen. Jones met harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite at a Sonny Rhodes recording session, and Musselwhite persuaded him to stay in California and join his band. Jones played guitar on Musselwhite's three late-1980s/early-1990s albums for Alligator Records (Ace of Harps, In My Time, and Signature). He also had the chance to do some extensive world touring with the harmonica master. Jones left Musselwhite's band amicably in the mid-1990s and is now back in Dallas, where he accompanies Dallas-area blues singers like R.L. Griffin, Hal Harris and the Lowlifers, and others. He issued Watch What You Say in 1998. ~ All Music Guide

K.D. Lang is a once-in-a-generation artist who has consistently displayed an extraordinary interpretative range as well as remarkable vocal prowess. It's no wonder she has, over the course of more than two decades, attracted such collaborators as Roy Orbison and Tony Bennett, along with admirers like Philip Glass and Madonna. As lang has matured, she continues to surprise and impress. With the 2008 release of her self-penned, self-produced Nonesuch disc Watershed, Rolling Stone declared, "k.d. lang does what the gifted and the lucky always should: improve as time passes." The Times of London agreed: "It's a quirk of the music industry that one of the sexiest, most sensual voices in all of pop music comes not from some raven-tressed siren in a glitter-dress but a middle-aged woman with a utility haircut and a penchant for male tailoring." lang herself called the album "a culmination of everything I've done - there's a little bit of jazz, a little country, a little of the Ingénue sound, a little Brazilian touch."
"Recollection" is k.d. lang's first-ever career retrospective, released 25 years after the release of her debut recording. Recollection features 22 of k.d.'s most beloved recordings on a 2-disc set, including an all-new interpretation of the Leonard Cohen classic, "Hallelujah."

PAUL RISHELL & ANNIE RAINES - Moving To The Country (1999)
When 22-year-old harmonica ace Annie Raines first sat in with 42-year-old country blues guitarist Paul Rishell in a Boston bar in 1992, few in the crowd suspected that they were witnessing the beginning of a musical partnership that would span the next years and counting. As a working team, Paul and Annie have racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on the road in the U.S. and Europe, collaborated on original songs, and released I WANT YOU TO KNOW (Tone-Cool/Artemis 1996), MOVING TO THE COUNTRY (1999), the W.C. Handy Award winner for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year, and GOIN’ HOME (2004), which was nominated for two Handy Awards. Rishell and Raines make a potent team, as anyone who caught their last duet, I Want You to Know, can attest. "Moving to the Country" is an equally tasty mix, with a good selection of covers accompanied by several original songs. The originals stack up well against the covers, which speaks highly of them indeed, given that Moving to the Country features Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie ("My Washerwoman's Gone"), Leadbelly ("Keep Your Hands Off Her"), Blind Blake ("Sweet Jivin' Mama"), and more. The duo are accomplished musicians; both are strong vocalists, Rishell's guitar work is first-rate, and Raines's harmonica is note-perfect. Though they're often accompanied by backing musicians, Rishell and Raines are the stars of this show, and it's a show that's not to be missed. - amazon.com

THE RADIATORS - Earth vs. The Radiators: The First 25 (2004)
The Radiators got started on January 28, 1978, during a rehearsal in the garage of one of the bandmembers; by the late '80s, they had become one of New Orleans' most popular rock & roll bands, serving up a smorgasbord of musical styles that included blues, R&B, funk, and rootsy rock & roll. Founding members keyboardist/ vocalist Ed Volker and guitarist/vocalist Camile Baudoin began playing together in the 1960s. Drummer Frank Bua began working with the two in 1970, and guitarist Dave Malone and bassist Reggie Scanlan played with other New Orleans bands until they formed as the Rhapsodizers in the mid-'70s. They changed their name to the Radiators in 1978 and released their debut, Work Done on Premises, two years later on their own Croaker Records. Heat Generation followed in 1982, and the band began to develop a loyal following in the Crescent City by the time percussionist Glenn Sears joined in early '80s, making them a sextet. The Radiators developed a reputation for intense, lengthy marathon-like live shows that would last three hours or more, akin to what the Allman Brothers and Little Feat were doing; their shows became highlights of the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and word of their reputation spread. In 1987, after a six-year hiatus, the Radiators signed to Epic Records and released Law of the Fish, followed two years later with Zig-Zaggin' Through Ghostland. After the release of Total Evaporation in 1991, the band issued Snafu 10-31-'91, 1995's New Dark Ages, and 1996's Party On. The group continued being active into the new millennium, releasing the self-titled The Radiators in 2001 and Dreaming Out Loud in 2006. ~ All Music Guide
"Earth vs. The Radiators: the First 25" is the thirteenth album released by The Radiators in their twenty-five year long career, and their fifth live album. Recorded at a series of twenty-fifth anniversary concerts held at Tipitina's club in New Orleans (Jan. 29,30,31, 2004) — the same site where their first album, Work Done on Premises was recorded—this two CD set features numerous guest appearances by southern US musicians.

GEORGE HARRISON - Let It Roll: Songs by George Harrison (2009)
George Harrison’s first-ever career-spanning solo hits collection, Let It Roll: Songs by George Harrison. Special packaging includes a 28-page booklet featuring previously unseen and rare photos, and newly-written liner notes by Warren Zanes. The collection’s 19 tracks have been digitally remastered by Giles Martin at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios. “Let It Roll: Songs by George Harrison is a gathering of material that takes us far into the territory that was ultimately a place unique to George Harrison,” writes Warren Zanes in his liner notes essay for the new collection. This collection is the first to span Harrison’s entire solo recording career, including the #1 Billboard Pop singles “My Sweet Lord,” “Isn’t It A Pity,” “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth),” and “Got My Mind Set On You." Let It Roll also features live recordings of three timeless Harrison-penned Beatles songs, “Something,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and “Here Comes The Sun,” from his 1971 all-star Concert For Bangladesh benefit at Madison Square Garden. “The keyhole into the world of George Harrison is the music itself. Yet his songs and the accomplishments for which he’s remembered are inextricably bound—and those accomplishments are, without question, eclectic in scope,” Zanes writes. George Harrison is a twice-inducted member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a solo artist and as a member of The Beatles, and an 11-time Grammy Award winner for his recordings with The Beatles, Traveling Wilburys, and as a solo artist. - amazon.com

SANDRA HALL - Miss Red Riding Hood (2001) ![]()
Where does one start when trying to accurately describe the God given talent and natural ability of a truly great artist? Do you start by quoting the many accolades bestowed upon them by journalists, critics, and their peers, or try to compare them to other artists who are better known? I think I would rather quote the great master himself, B.B. King, when he sang "It's hard to describe her, so I'd better not start, I better stop now because I have a very weak heart, You upset me baby, like being hit by a falling tree, woman that's what you do to me" and that is the only way to describe Sandra Hall. She got her start at the age of four in a little town just outside of Atlanta called Oakland City singing gospel music at Whitesville Baptist Church alongside her mother and grandmother. At the age of 12 Sandra and her sister formed a group called The Soul Sisters and began singing in clubs. Then in the 1960's Sandra took on a career as a dancer and formed an all girls group called The Exotics. That's when she began to open shows at the world famous Royal Peacock club. Since that time, Sandra's musical career has soared to many heights including songwriting sessions, tours, and a number of albums released worldwide. She has been near and far writing and singing the blues for audiences around the world.Throughout her journey she has shared the stage with such artists as James Brown, BB King, Johnny Taylor, Otis Redding, Bo Diddley, The Temptations, The O'Jays, and Etta James just to name a few.

HENRY BUTLER - The Game Has Just Begun (2002)
Henry Butler's blues-based, New Orleans funk-style piano playing is not for every blues fan, to be sure. Butler is a local legend in New Orleans, but rarely tours other parts of the country; most any time of the year, he can be found playing in one of New Orleans' famous nightspots. It's not an exaggeration to say Butler is a piano genius who has yet to be discovered by the masses. His recordings demonstrate that he can do it all: he writes his own songs, does his own arrangements of classic tunes by Professor Longhair and others, and can play with as much passion as a soloist as he can with a band. What makes him great - but admittedly difficult for record companies to market - is that he constantly pushes himself in new directions as a musician. He can't be pigeonholed as blues, jazz, or even rock & roll, though he performs all three genres with impeccable taste, depth of understanding and freshness of appreciation. Butler's playing also reflects influences like gospel and classic R&B. ~ All Music Guide

HORACE SILVER - A Prescription For The Blues (1997)
With "A Prescription For The Blues", 69-year-old pianist Horace Silver proves he's writing and playing as well as — if not better than — he did over four decades ago. But mere stamina is no reason to appreciate this terrific remedy of first-rate bop-n-blues. The "hard bop grandpop" has assembled a classy all-star lineup, reuniting with Michael and Randy Brecker (their last time together was on Silver's 1972 album In Pursuit of the 27th Man ) and adding one-time associates Ron Carter on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. This superb quintet, Silver's most ideal format, evidences truly outstanding playing from both Breckers (it's always great hearing how well these two play together). Silver, too, sounds like a cat half his age, offering meaty solos that combine clever lines finessed with jaunty blues chords. His music, which conveys instead of preaches his holistic values, is never less than memorable (easy-to-follow lyrics to each tune are printed on the disc's booklet, though no one actually sings here). It's all fairly indistinguishable from one of his mid-sixties Blue Note records (except for Michael Brecker's easily recognizable contemporary sound). - allaboutjazz.com

Debbie Davies doesn't play straight blues on All I Found, her eighth release as a bandleader and her first for Telarc Records, so much as a kind of blues-inflected country-pop somewhat reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt, only without Raitt's distinctive, drop-dead slide guitar technique. Make no mistake, Davies plays some solid guitar on this album (she got her start playing in Albert Collins' Icebreakers, after all), and she has Arthur Neilson on loan from Shemekia Copeland on second guitar to keep things sizzling on three cuts, but somehow under all that stellar guitar work, several of these songs seem a little tired, and "Troughin'," a humorous ditty about overeating, is downright irritating. The organ-dominated title tune (with Bruce Katz handling the keys) is a delight, though, and features the wonderfully wry vocal hook "I went looking for a good man and all I found was you," which Davies delivers with exactly the right amount of sly and bemused disgust. The feisty instrumental "So What" is another clear highlight, allowing Davies, Neilson, and the rhythm section of Per Hanson on drums and Noel Neal on bass to cut loose a little bit. In the end, All I Found feels like an album in a holding pattern, with enough guitar fireworks to keep it interesting but not enough standout songs to make it particularly memorable. - cduniverse

LEVON HELM BAND - MerleFest Ramble (2008)
Helm has been playing "rambles" for friends and neighbors near his home in Woodstock NY for several years now, but concerts for wider audiences have been exceedingly rare since his recovery from throat cancer. This recording finds him in fine voice and surrounded by his house band and special guests, as he leads the band though a 75-minute set mixing old favorites with new material, traditional songs, and some well-picked covers. The set includes two selections from Helm's recent studio CD Red Dirt, the trad-sounding "Anna Lee" and hard-rocking "Got Me a Woman." The standout covers are Springsteen's "Atlantic City" and the country chestnut "Ashes of Love," which the band just kills. I also love their version of the bluegrass standard "Deep Elem Blues." The band are the members of the group Ollabelle, including his daughter Amy Helm. Larry Campbell is the multi-instrumental wizard and Teresa Williams, who takes the lead on one track, "Did You Love Me At All?" Little Sammy Davis, who is featured on the 2005 "Midnight Ramble Sessions" CD adds a potent second male voice on the several blues numbers. The kick-ass horn section is reminiscent of The Band's great brass section. Among the special guests of musicians on hand at MerleFest are Sam Bush and Bruce Hornsby, whose piano licks play a big role on several tracks.
Live performance recorded 04.26.2008 at the Watson Stage, Wilkesboro, NC, during MerleFest 2008, an annual tribute to Americana artists Doc and Merle Watson.

ERIC CLAPTON - Stages (1993)
Spectrum's 1993 Stages of Clapton is a curious compilation that offers a little bit of every phrase of the prime of Eric Clapton's career, containing a few cuts from his stint with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, a couple tracks from both Cream and Derek & the Dominos, a cut from Blind Faith, and a solo cut from the '70s. The caveat is, with the exception of Cream's "Crossroads" and maybe "Steppin' Out" and "Hide Away," which are the signature Mayall tunes, none of these are hits -- they're just taken almost at random. Most of it is pretty good, but it's not assembled with the intention of revealing his lesser-known tunes, nor is it a good choice for casual fans who want to dig deeper. It's just a hodgepodge, but as hodgepodges go, it's not bad. - cduniverse.com

JOHNNY WINTER - A Rock N' Roll Collection (1994)
In 1994, Columbia records released A Rock And Roll Collection, a compilation of Johnny Winter's albums released on that label (and it's subsidiary Blue Sky) from about 1969 to 1980. This two disc set is a perfect showcase for his talented, megawatt guitar playing, but it also illustrates the problems in marketing such a gifted artist. Was he a bluesman, a classic rock and roller, a talented soul/funk/r and b player, what? Not to mention, the one and only bona-fide hit in this whole set ("Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo") was a major chart success only for the guy who wrote it (Rick Derringer), and not the guy who first recorded it (Winter). So, what we have here is a compilation of excellent originals ("Thirty Days," "Hustled Down in Texas,"), some very fine covers ("Miss Ann," "When You've Got a Good Friend," "Rock Me Baby"), some very good live numbers ("Bony Moronie," "Good Morning, Little School Girl," "It's All Over Now","Highway 61 Revisited"), one absolutely Titanic guest appearance by Muddy Waters and his band ("Walking Thru the Park"), and the rest of the cuts, which are mostly pretty mediocre. Some of these songs are hurt by strange decisions in the studio (Why ruin Robert Johnson's classic "Come On In My Kitchen" with a FLUTE solo? And who deleted the lusty background vocals by the Sing Sing Singers on "Thirty Days?); the entire package suffers from a rather bewildering track selection (Why only one cut apiece from Saints and Sinners and Still Alive and Well, two of Winter's best early works?). In sum, this is only a fairly good collection: it seems that Winter solved the material/marketing problems himself by recording nothing but the blues after about 1977; most of his later efforts are much more consistent and listenable. So while you may be discontented with much of A Rock And Roll Collection, there is still much to satisfy the patient listener. Rock on, Johnny! - amazon.com

BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST- All Is Safely Gathered In: An Athology 1967-1997 (2005)
Barclay James Harvest was, for many years, one of the most hard-luck outfits in progressive rock. A quartet of solid rock musicians - John Lees, guitar, vocals; Les Holroyd, bass, vocals; Stuart "Woolly" Wolstenholme, keyboards, vocals; and Mel Pritchard, drums - with a knack for writing hook-laden songs built on pretty melodies, they harmonized like the Beatles and wrote extended songs with more of a beat than the Moody Blues. They were signed to EMI at the same time as Pink Floyd, and both bands moved over to the company's progressive rock-oriented Harvest imprint at the same time, yet somehow, they never managed to connect with the public for a major hit in England, much less America. A pair of isolated singles in the late '60s indicated that Barclay James Harvest might be well suited to the growing progressive rock movement, based on their facility for psychedelic pop and (reason enough for induction) their use of the mellotron. Beginning with their eponymous debut in 1970, BJH released roughly an album a year throughout the '70s. But despite more than enough talent to succeed, BJH never really carved out a niche for themselves; when it came time to describe their music, the comparison was invariably drawn to more established bands like The Moody Blues and The Beatles. Their earliest music (up to Baby James Harvest) is a psychedelic treasure chest waiting to be rediscovered (or endless variations on "Puff The Magic Dragon," depending on your stomach for psychedelia). The albums from the '70s are also quite good, but primary songwriters John Lees and Les Holroyd had grown into balladeers rather than space cowboys, leaving Wooly Wolstenholme to author sublime epics on his own. As prog was pushed to the cultural periphery by punk, BJH found themselves playing more to the continent in the '80s (where they were still very popular). In 1999, the band recorded a live album featuring a returning Wolstenholme on keyboards. However, by 2003, Lees and Holroyd were fronting different versions of the band and releasing separate works under the BJH banner.
"All is Safely Gathered In" is a deluxe 5 CD boxed set featuring eleven previously unreleased recordings, three tracks previously unreleased outside of Germany and one track previously unreleased on CD. The boxed set marks the first occasion that tracks from both the EMI Harvest and Polydor eras have been compiled together and includes a lavishly illustrated 80 page book telling the Barclay James Harvest story in the words of John Lees, Woolly Wolstenholme, Les Holroyd and Mel Pritchard. All is Safely Gathered In is an essential addition to the Barclay James Harvest catalog.

GRAPHITE - Chestnut Loke (1996)
Graphite were formed at Reading University in the late sixties. They gigged professionally on the rock circuit from 1970 to 1973, supporting many big names of that era such as Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, Arthur Brown’s Kingdom Come, Mott the Hoople and even T-Rex. Amazingly, Graphite got a billing above Queen at a festival in Truro, Cornwall in 1971. The band’s musical approach dwelt on the imaginative use of sleepy melotron, drifting vocals and spacey guitar effects, laced with melancholic overtones, establishing them as exponents of downbeat, hedonistic prog-rock. Ever present in the line-up were the band’s three songwriters, Keith Allen (vocals), Chris Gore (keyboards) and David Hook (guitar) but the rhythm section underwent a succession of changes. The group recorded a considerable amount of material using a selection of top studios including Rockfield, Command, CBS and Nova Sound but only two singles were ever released. The first “Gimmie Your Number”/”Chestnut Loke” came out on the BEACON label in 1972 and was followed by “Come Back”/”Good Time Woman” issued by EMI in 1974 (the year the band split up) under the curious pseudonym of Sinbad. - last.fm

His ingenuity, versatility and spellbinding riffs dominate this frenetic and riveting CD. Most of the songs are intensely heavy with hard, experimental rock but there are others that yearn with the most sensitive guitar sounds. Jeff Beck literally has an orchestra and other instruments inside his guitar. Nobody else can create so many myriad tones from a guitar. - amazon.com

DAVID COVERDALE - DISCOGRAPHY (STUDIO)
David Coverdale is an English rock vocalist most famous for his work with the English hard rock band Deep Purple, and his later band Whitesnake

- White Snake (1977)
"White Snake" is the first solo album by David Coverdale, released in 1977. Coverdale would use the album title as the name of his future band, first known as "David Coverdale's Whitesnake" and soon afterwards shortened to just Whitesnake. This album is often incorrectly called Whitesnake, and should not be confused with the 1987 album of similar name.

- Northwinds (1978)
"Northwinds" is the title of the second solo album by David Coverdale, released in early 1978. The original release contained eight tracks, with two more tracks added on recent reissues. The album's second side would later be combined with the Snakebite EP from his band Whitesnake, to form the Snakebite album. Originally entitled "North Winds", Coverdale's second solo album leans more towards blues-based rock, touched upon in his previous album.

- Into The Light (2000)
"Into the Light" is the third solo album by David Coverdale. In between 1978 and 1997, Coverdale and his band Whitesnake produced 10 studio albums. After a three year break, he returned with this most recent solo album since 1978's Northwinds. In an interview with Classic Rock magazine in 2000, Coverdale stated: "The whole premise of my new record, Into The Light, is about coming out of what I felt was a dark period... I didn't really know who I was, using the illusion of David Coverdale I've created, or that other people have. I got tired of trying to live up to that, which is not necessarily who I am. - wikipedia

LAURA MARLING - Alas I Cannot Swim (2008) & I Speak Because I Can (2010)
Singer/songwriter Laura Marling was only 16 years old when she emerged on the British indie scene in 2007 thanks to a handful of infectious singles made available on her /MySpace profile. Endowed with a husky voice, an acoustic guitar, and a gift for building quirky, hooky folk songs (characteristics that would have the artist compared favorably to artists like Lily Allen, Regina Spektor, and Martha Wainwright), Marling quickly made a name for herself throughout England thanks to a heavy touring schedule and a few high-profile gigs, not the least of which included an appearance at the 2006 City Showcase: Spotlight London and as the opening act for Jamie T. Still without a label one year later, her debut EP, My Manic and I, was nonetheless slated for independent release in the late fall of 2007. This status didn't last for long however, because in early 2008, signed to Virgin, Marling issued Alas I Cannot Swim, which also came as part of a multimedia "Songbox" package. ~ All Music Guide

- Alas I Cannot Swim (2008)
2008 debut album from the young British Folk singer/songwriter who will appeal to fans of Kirsty Maccoll, Linda Thompson and Kate Nash. Although not legally old enough to buy a drink, this darling of the Art-Folk circuit has been selling out clubs and garnering critical acclaim. Her gentle Folk songs are haunting, cool and personable. With talent to back up the critical hype that is just beginning, Marling is savvy enough to have released an album that stands tall above the other female singer/songwriters on the scene today. 12 tracks including the single 'Ghosts'. - amazon.com

UK songstress Laura Marling releases her sophomore album, I Speak Because I Can, on Astralwerks Records. Produced by Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon, Ryan Adams), I Speak Because I Can is the follow up to Marling's lauded, Mercury Prize-nominated debut, Alas I Cannot Swim. I Speak Because I Can is Laura Marling's coming of age album, if such a thing can be said about the brilliant songwriter whose compositions belie her age (for the record, she'll be twenty this year). Recorded in 2009 at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in outside London, and featuring the talents of her backing band Mumford & Sons, I Speak Because I Can reveals a new side to Laura Marling, whose debut was released when she was only seventeen years old. Its ten songs are imbued with a new richness, ripeness and sophistication, marked by homespun tales and sparse instrumentation. I Speak Because I Can showcases not only Marling's ability to tell one hell of a story, but her incredible guitar playing, which has grown more intricate since her first album. Marling will return to the studio with Ethan Johns within the next few months to work on a second album of new material that will be released in the fall of 2010. More details on this record will be announced upon its completion. - amazon.com

B.B. KING & ERIC CLAPTON - Riding With The King (2000)
"Riding with the King" is a blues album by Eric Clapton and B.B. King released in 2000. The idea for a collaborative album began during the sessions for King's 1997 album "Deuces Wild". The album contains B.B. King classics like "Three O'Clock Blues", "Days of Old", and "Help the Poor" from "Live at the Regal". Other tracks include the Big Bill Broonzy-penned "Key to the Highway", Chicago pianist Maceo Merriweather's "Worried Life Blues" and a cover of Isaac Hayes's composition "Hold On, I'm Comin'" originally a 1966 single for Stax Records artists Sam & Dave. "Riding with the King" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
It sounds like the beginning of a story: "So, Slowhand and the King of the Blues were riding in a car ..." If this is a musical journey, it's the kind that rolls down long, empty stretches of country highway at 80 miles an hour, with the top down and the stereo blasting. Clapton and King may be more city than country, but this collection has the relaxed, laid-back feel that only comes from a pair of veterans doing what they do best. What they do here is cover 12 classic blues songs, many of them staples of King's repertoire, so the title of this album makes sense. Whether it's the rollicking rock & roll of the title track, or the acoustic shuffle of "Key to the Highway," or the sweet notes of "When My Heart Beats Like a Hammer," a real sense of pleasure comes through on this album, the kind of pleasure one gets from jamming late at night with a good friend. -amazon.com

Eric Clapton is the eponymous debut solo album from Eric Clapton. It was released in August of 1970. The album that launched Clapton's solo career takes most of its cues from his then-recent collaboration with Delaney and Bonnie. In fact, Delaney produced the album, which explains its loose, jam-session feel that sometimes finds Clapton battling against a cast that includes guest stars Stephen Stills, Sonny Curtis, Rita Coolidge, Leon Russell, and Delaney and Bonnie. Yet this is the album on which Clapton established himself as a forceful singer, and it also produced some of his most enduring classics, including "Blues Power," "After Midnight," and "Let It Rain." - amazon.com

B.B.KING - Indianola Mississippi Seeds (1970)
The years 1969 and 1970 were busy ones for B.B. King. When he wasn't playing one of his 300-plus gigs, King was in the studio laying down tracks that included "The Thrill Is Gone," his only Top 20 hit. 1970's INDIANOLA MISSISSIPPI SEEDS was a record that fit in well with the musical climate of the time. Up and coming artists such as Carole King and Leon Russell contributed their talents to these predominantly B.B. King-penned numbers. The female King plays piano throughout, giving "You're Still My Woman" an Aretha Franklin flavor whereas "Until I'm Dead And Cold" is infused with a sanctified air thanks to her playing and the inclusion of a brassy horn section. No slouch on the eighty-eights himself, Russell (along with a then unknown Joe Walsh) provides funky accompaniment on "Ask Me No Questions" and the instrumental "King's Special." The blues legend himself lays Lucille aside long enough to give himself solo piano accompaniment on the minute and a half "Nobody Love Me But My Mother." Leon Russell's biggest contribution to INDIANOLA is of his oft-recorded "Hummingbird." Along with playing piano, the musically gifted Okie also conducts a string section and gospel-inspired chorus of female back-up singers that includes Merry Clayton. - cduniverse.com

(Johnny Cash Sings Ballads from the True West), America: A 200 Year Salute in Story and Song, From Sea to Shining Sea, and The Rambler, all in one place. They fit together as a body of work, and he put a lot of heart into all of these songs individually. He also engendered a good deal of enmity from members of his core audience of white Southerners, for the sympathies he displayed for the plight of Native Americans on 1964's Bitter Tears. America: A 200 Year Salute is the strongest of the other albums, covering the widest scope and allowing Cash to tie together several singing and songwriting traditions. Cash's two Western-song albums make a natural pairing, as do his two albums of railroad-related songs. The last of the four discs, encompassing From Sea to Shining Sea and The Rambler, is a logical pairing, the latter album being the realistic, somewhat theatrical contemporary equivalent to the former's folk music/history travelogue. Most of the dialogue sequences don't work too well, but the best of the songs come up to Cash's highest standard. Unlike other Bear Family boxes, the book in this one forgoes a detailed sessionography in favor of reprinting original album jacket notes and a good essay by Bob Allen. ~ All Music Guide

PATTI SMITH - Land [1975-2002] (2002)
The two-disc set LAND (1975-2002) is post-punk icon Patti Smith's own selection of her finest work from the first quarter-century of her career. The first disc, a best-of collection, is a non-chronological sampling of her key songs ("Dancing Barefoot", "Because the Night", and many more) and adds one new track, a surprisingly effective cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry" that sounds like an outtake from 1978's EASTER. (Confusingly, the track list doesn't include the "Land" medley from 1975's HORSES.) The second disc starts with Smith's incredibly rare 1974 DIY single "Piss Factory", but then runs through previously unheard demos (like a skeletal early version of "Redondo Beach" that sounds more like crazed calliope music than the reggae song it became) and revelatory live tracks. LAND (1975-2002) is a thoughtful, idiosyncratic compilation, but it's more for fans than newcomers, who are still best advised to get a copy of HORSES and move on from there. - amazon.com

Slash is widely considered one of the greatest rock guitar players of all time. He has received countless accolades and awards including a 2007 star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame alongside his idols Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. After the band’s break-up, Slash went on to critical acclaim in his personal project Slash’s Snakepit, and global success with supergroup Velvet Revolver. V.A. - Stax Does The Beatles (2008)
Many Beatles tribute albums have saturated the market, but how many compilations can boast Isaac “Shaft” Hayes performing a 12-minute version of The Beatles’ “Something?” That single is just one example from Stax Does The Beatles, a compilation featuring famous and little-known Stax artists. The Memphis label, whose roster included Otis Redding, Booker T & The MGs, The Bar Kays, and Hayes, integrated rock with a distinctly southern soul style, producing a more raw sound than the more polished Motown recordings. In the late 60s and early 70s, many Stax artists declared themselves Beatles fans, going so far as to record covers for various albums. This new CD collects the best of these songs, some of which have never been previously released. Highlights include an alternate take of Otis Redding’s “Day Tripper,” where he gives the song a James Brown-like makeover. David Porter, Hayes’ songwriting partner, had a lower-profile solo career, but scores with a horn-driven, danceable cover of “Help.” Steve Cropper, lead guitarist for Booker T & The MGs, performs a version of “With A Little Help from My Friends” that resembles Joe Cocker fused with Jimi Hendrix. Carla Thomas infuses “Yesterday” with bluesy emotion that stresses the deep regret expressed in the lyrics. Booker T & the MGs recorded an entire Beatles tribute album, McLemore Avenue, and several of those cuts are represented here. They lend a decidedly rock and slightly funkadelic edge to “Eleanor Rigby,” while the organ lends additional soul to “Lady Madonna.” Other songs illustrate The Beatles’ soul influences. The Mar-Keys’ “Let It Be” turns the song into a church revival, featuring the organ and a killer saxophone solo. John Gary Williams turns the technically non-Beatle “My Sweet Lord” into a gospel workout, a slower version of Billy Preston’s cover. Perhaps the most logical cover is Booker T & the MG’s “Got to Get You into My Life,” a song that even Paul McCartney asserted was a homage to Motown.

V.A. - The Unbroken Circle: The Musical Heritage Of The Carter Family (2004) ![]()
![]()
![]()
The title of this tribute to the Carter Family alludes to their best-known spiritual, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." While that standard isn't included here, the roster of artists renews the spirit of the circle, a familial legacy that encompasses Mother Maybelle's daughter June Carter Cash, June's husband Johnny Cash, Johnny's daughter Rosanne Cash, and generations of artists inspired by them. Highlights range from the yelp of George Jones on "Worried Man Blues" to the surge of rockabilly energy in John Prine's "Bear Creek Blues" to the banjo-driven, fiddle-tinged bluegrass of the Del McCoury Band's "Rambling Boy." As for the family's performances, Rosanne brings a depth of expression to "The Winding Stream" while a sense of mortality pervades Johnny's "Engine One-Forty-Three" and June's "Hold Fast to the Right." And Willie Nelson's solo reading of "You Are My Flower" gives it room to bloom. Album producer John Carter Cash (son of Johnny and June, grandson of Maybelle) makes every one of these tracks feel like family. - amazon.com

OLI BROWN - Open Road (2008) & Heads I Win Tails You Lose (2010)

The great British blues players, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Peter Green among others, conquered the world in the early sixties - appearing to leave unequivocal magic in their wake. There have been times since, when it was hard to see anything like a credible follow-up to these legends. If you ever worried for the future of the blues, then fret no longer. Oli Brown is the real deal, ready to carry the torch of British Blues in the 21st century, taking inspiration from today's contemporary bluesmen like Aynsley Lister. Already paying his dues, Oli has shared a stage with giants Koko Taylor, Walter Trout, John Mayall and Buddy Guy. "Open Road" will take you on a journey through Blues City, where the musical architecture is splendidly diverse - sublime use of light and shade is Oli's speciality, a gift so rare, it is easy to see that the new generation of the blues is in safe hands. Taking a trip down this open road will enable you to feel more than just the wind in your hair - you'll feel the destiny of the blues for a modern age.

The eagerly awaited follow up to Oli Brown's critically acclaimed debut Open Road is 'Heads I win, Tails You Lose' and features that unique Oli Brown sound; clean guitar, great riffs and a vocal honed by two years of touring that squeezes every emotion from the lyrics. The album shows the quality of Oli's song writing with stunning tracks like Evil Soul and Speechless, yet he refuses to shy away from adapting his own favourite classics such as Fever and No Diggity. This album was produced by the legendary Mike Vernon (Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, Ten Years After), who was keen to come out of retirement to work with the talented Oli after hearing his debut CD.

V.A. - El Becko: A Jeff Beck Salute (2008)
In this 2008 release from Brian Tarquin’s BHP MUSIC label, some of the finest guitarists offer their interpretations of songs previously recorded by Jeff Beck. The results show the full range of the guitarist’s capabilities, and these guys are all over the fretboard, but they vary in range. The talented Tarquin spews notes all over in “You Know What I Mean” as well as “Blue Wind” and “Play With Me” in a way that nods to Beck but brings a newer interpretation while Doug Doppler offers a fine read of “People Get Ready” that doesn’t add much to the Beck version. Things get much more interesting on the Beck tour de force “Scatterbrain” here arranged for strings and performed on violins. It really works, as does the nylon string guitar take on “You Never Know/Nadia.” Although the songs covered are mostly from Beck’s solo period, certain of the albums seem to lend themselves to a particular sound. Songs from Beck’s Wired album translate well to an over-the-top reading that is heavy on amplification, sustain, and frantic playing while some of the later material from the eighties and nineties offer more interpretation for dynamics and taste. But there is no shortage of hot-shoe guitar playing on this tribute and, were he interested, Beck would be pleased. - Vintage Guitar magazine

MOUNTAIN - Greatest Hits Live! (2000)
This album contains a live recording made for the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio series of a concert by Mountain held at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ, on November 3, 1974. In a six-minute interview conducted 25 years later especially for this release, singer/lead guitarist Leslie West recalled the show as the first American date of Mountain's reunion. (The group had disbanded in 1972 and re-formed in 1973.) It seems more likely that it was one of the band's last performances, since Mountain had recorded its comeback album Avalanche the previous winter and released it in the summer of 1974. In any case, the sound quality is terrific and the show is a lively one, with bandmembers West, singer/bassist Felix Pappalardi, drummer Corky Laing, and new rhythm guitarist David Perry energetically working their way through favorites like "Mississippi Queen," "Theme for an Imaginary Western," and "Nantucket Sleighride." Two songs written by New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint, the 1966 Lee Dorsey hit "Get out of My Life Woman" and an instrumental version of "It's for You," are surprise additions to a set that also includes a timely performance of "Jingle Bells" to mark the holiday season and a concluding medley of "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On." There is plenty of affection expressed in the stage remarks, but that didn't keep the band from breaking up soon after this show was recorded. ~ All Music Guide

THE MOODY BLUES - Time Traveller (1994)
This five-disc set effectively chronicles the long, varied career of the Moody Blues. The history of the Moody Blues as most fans know them began with the arrival of Justin Hayward and the release of DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED. This pioneering effort was one of the first progressive rock albums. A concept piece featuring a suite of songs linked together both musically and thematically, it also broke ground in its adept marriage of rock group and orchestra. The orchestral sound was expanded even further by Mike Pinder's use of Mellotron. This album, well-represented here, not only set the Moodies on a path they would follow for years, but also proved enormously influential to subsequent prog-rockers like King Crimson and Yes. As the band progressed, their sound expanded to include pop, psychedelia, folk, and hard rock. The key element of their sound, though, remained the orchestrated ballad. The band's '80s comeback, a phase successfully chronicled here, found former Yes member Patrick Moraz replacing Pinder, and the band stripping down its sound for a more radio-friendly, synth-laden sound. Aside from the mid-'60s Denny Laine period, all the band's phases are covered here, and a handsome, detailed booklet is included in the bargain.
The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward, John Lodge, Ray Thomas, Mike Pinder, Patrick Moraz, Graeme Edge.
