This CD features one original, "Your Sacrifice," and a host of covers, with about half coming from a live show at King's Memphis club. He ranges wide here from Muddy Waters' "Walkin' in the Park" to Memphis Minnie's "When the Levee Breaks" to Jimi Hendrix' "Little Wing." He handles this variety with a skill beyond his years, and once he finds his own voice, he could be a a major player. It's always great to see young talent so immersed in the blues.

DINAH WASHINGTON - First Issue: The Dinah Washington Story [The Original Recordings] (1993)

FIRST ISSUE contains 46 tracks presented in roughly chronological order beginning with Dinah Washington's first recordings for Keynote with Lionel Hampton in 1944 and concluding with her Mercury tracks from 1961. This 2-CD set includes never-before-published photos by Chuck Stewart, plus liner notes and annotations by jazz historian Chris Albertson. First Issue, which coincided with the United States Postal Service's issue of a stamp bearing the image of Dinah Washington, is a two-disc, 46-song anthology of her recordings for Keynote, Mercury, Verve, Wing, and EmArcy from 1943-1961. The set chronicles Washington's evolution from a strictly jazz and blues vocalist in the Bessie Smith tradition to an important crossover artist who could appeal equally to the pop audience. The collection is not entirely hit-oriented - although it rounds up her important R&B and pop singles, including the crossover hits "What a Diff'rence a Day Made" and "Baby, You've Got What It Takes" (a duet with Brook Benton), there is also an early bluesy session with Lionel Hampton and a few notable album tracks that show the variety of material she handled. Some of her Top Ten R&B hits are omitted, but Washington was a prolific hitmaker beyond that which a two-disc set can contain. Washington recorded nearly 500 sides during the period covered by First Issue, and this generous survey is an excellent compromise for buyers wanting a thorough anthology but who are unwilling to commit to the expensive series of box sets that comprise The Complete Dinah Washington on Mercury. ~ cduniverse

Not strictly a "greatest-hits" collection, Love Songs contains Elton John's most famous ballads, from "Your Song" and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" to "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." Featuring two new songs, including the single "You Can Make History (Young Again)," Love Songs is designed for the casual John fan who is familiar with his songs through adult contemporary radio. If you don't fall into that category, the compilation is bound to fall short of expectations, but the record nevertheless works well as a collection of ballads and soft rock. ~ All Music Guide

Edstrom possesses a strong voice that can float over a quiet arrangement or deliver a powerful statement backed by a hard-charging band. Her classical training is evident as Mare easily slides throughout her vocal register, each note delivered cleanly and perfectly executed. This collection highlights her vocal talent in a variety of settings. Fox, in the roles of producer and arranger, updates the approach to this batch of mostly well-known blues tunes and provides Edstrom with a challenging musical framework for her lustrous voice. MARC BENNO AND THE NIGHTCRAWLERS feat. STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN - Crawlin (2006) thumbupthumbupthumbup

This is the original recordings and a collector’s piece of rock n roll history!!! These first recordings of SRV in Hollywood feature a teenage guitarist before he was heavily Hendrix influenced. Benno hired him as a guitar player before he had even sang on stage. He was always the greatest. Hear his roots and where he came from… Combining with Benno’s original songwriting talents, the band took on a sound of their own and were legends in the Austin scene of the 70’s.

The original recordings of the infamous Texas blues-rock band featuring Stevie Ray Vaughan on lead guitar, Doyle Bramhall on drums, Tommy McClure on bass guitar and Billy Etheridge on keyboards, performing classics written by Marc Benno and the band. Concentrating on Benno's songwriting talents, the band took on a sound of their own and became underground legends in the Austin music scene of the 70's. The album, which also features Stevie's first instrumental, was recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood right before the Nightcrawlers went off on tour with J. Geils and Humble Pie. They returned from tour to find their label wasn't looking for another blues based project, and the album has sat unreleased until now!

ETTA BAKER - One-Dime Blues (1991) thumbup

Etta Baker (1913 – 2006) was a Piedmont blues guitarist and singer from North Carolina, United States. Over the years, Baker has shared her knowledge with many well known musical artists including Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Baker received the North Carolina Folk Heritage Award from the North Carolina Arts Council in 1989, the National Endowment for the Arts' National Heritage Fellowship in 1991, and the North Carolina Award in 2003. Along with her sister, Cora Phillips, Baker received the North Carolina Folklore Society's Brown-Hudson Folklore Award in 1982.

Etta Baker was a master of the blues guitar style that became popular in the southern piedmont after the turn of the century. She was raised in the foothills of Caldwell County where music was central in the lives of her family and friends. Both parents played several instruments, and Etta began picking the guitar at the age of three. Mrs. Baker played the guitar and banjo. She rarely sang, preferring to let the instrument speak for her. Like most traditional artists, she played music for personal satisfaction and for the pleasure of friends and family.

MARE EDSTROM

Mare Edstrom’s road to the blues has been long and interesting. While she is primarily classically trained, her formative years were spent playing piano and singing in local rock bands. Her first album, Learning How to Believe, was a combination of finely-crafted original songs and carefully selected cover songs by legends of the singer-songwriter school. She brought a truly new perspective to songs by the likes of Townes van Zandt, Eric Taylor, Greg Brown, and Janis Ian. This amazing work was quickly followed by a second release titled Inside the Blues. This release, a blues tribute, showcases works by Blind Willie McTell, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, and Blind Willie Johnson, as well as works by her admitted heroes Memphis Minnie and Little Esther. This highly acclaimed work has found its way onto major radio station playlists throughout Europe and the US. Inside the Blues has had extensive favorable reviews, including key reviews by Blues Revue magazine in the US and Crossroads magazine in France. Mare’s wide vocal range, energy, and vintage brand of roadhouse authenticity have been duly noted by critics again and again. This exciting new take on the blues is still receiving international attention and has established Mare as a major player in the blues style, often compared to the great ladies of the blues, past and present.

In March 2006, Mare’s much anticipated second blues effort, titled Shake ‘em on Down, was released. This release features some new band members as well as an interesting and exciting mix of early blues rarities. Songs by the likes of Scrapper Blackwell, Bukka White, and Bumble Bee Slim are dusted off and shined up for a new outing. This exciting new blues recording has once again been reviewed favorably worldwide, in Blues Revue (USA), Italian II Blues Magazine (Italy), Maverick Magazine (UK), and Rootstime (Denmark), as well as many others. This CD continues to receive praise, attention, and much airplay throughout the world blues scene.

Jean-Jacques Milteau is a French blues harmonica player, singer, and songwriter. Milteau became interested in the harmonica when he first heard folk and rock music (such as Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones) in the 1960s. He played with French singers like Yves Montand, Eddy Mitchell, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Maxime Le Forestier, Barbara, and Charles Aznavour in various styles, from blues to jazz. In 1989, he recorded his first solo album, Blues Harp, and toured the world with Manu Galvin at the guitar and with guest musicians like Mighty Mo Rodgers and Demi Evans. He has authored methods for learning the harmonica. Demi Evans is an American vocalist and lyricist from Dallas, Texas, who is heavily marketed in Western Europe and especially France as a famous blues singer, although she is relatively unknown in the US.

Charlie Sexton is one of the most intriguing and accomplished artists working in music today. It is unfair to pigeonhole him with labels like "roots-rocker" or "Americana"; he is so much greater than that. Once he began collaborating with Tonio K on songs for the Arc Angels album, Charlie suddenly leaped into that rarified place occupied by the truly great: Bob Dylan, Ray Davies, The Band, U2. - amazon.com

It's been a decade since Charlie Sexton issued the sprawling, ambitious Under the Wishing Tree. But Sexton has been anything but idle. He's produced recordings by Lucinda Williams, Edie Brickell, Los Super Seven, Shannon McNally, and Double Trouble. He also played guitar in Bob Dylan's studio and road bands for over three years. Cruel and Gentle Things is only the fourth album issued under Sexton's own name. It was recorded, in many sessions over a number of years, whenever he got a break from his other occupational duties. It is a close and intimate affair that finds the songwriter and producer playing nearly everything over ten songs. - cduniverse.com

THE BAND - To Kingdom Come (1989)

Released in the fall of 1989, To Kingdom Come is a double-disc set that purports to be "The Definitive Collection" and, in a sense, it does provide a good overview of the band's career. Over the course of 31 songs, the collection works its way through the hits and album tracks, adding such rarities as "Get Up Jake," "Back to Memphis," and "Lovin' You Is Sweeter Than Ever," even if it never touches on The Basement Tapes. All the predictable items are here and the album tracks are well-chosen, and it is a good representation of the band, worth the time of listeners who want a smartly assembled anthology. The 2000 Greatest Hits gets the edge for casual fans, since it has 20 tracks on one disc, yet this remains worthwhile for listeners who want a fairly comprehensive, thorough anthology. ~ All Music Guide

JOE COCKER - Live at Woodstock (2009)

Issued in 2009, the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, the most famous rock music festival in history, Joe Cocker's performance at the festival turns out to be one of the defining moments of his career thus far. Who knew? Cocker's turn on the stage came on Sunday afternoon, August 17, 1969. He had issued his brilliant debut album, With a Little Help from My Friends, the previous February, and his sophomore follow-up - not as dynamic a recording but a more consistent one overall -- would be issued in December. Backed by the Grease Band (not to be confused with the vanguard U.S. outfit the Hampton Grease Band) and a trio of backing vocalists, his 11-song show included six cuts from the debut, two from his then upcoming album (including a dynamite cover of Bob Dylan's "Dear Landlord" that opened the gig), a stellar reading of Ashford & Simpson's "I Don't Need No Doctor," and "Something to Say,"an original that didn't appear officially on one of his own sets until 1995's Long Voyage Home. From that opening Dylan cut throughout his 62-minute outing, Cocker never really let up in energy or graciousness toward the crowd. The ballads, such as "Do I Still Figure in Your Life," are delivered with soul and as much fire as harder-driving rhythm & blues-inflected numbers such as "Feelin' Alright" and "Hitchcock Railway." The summation of the show is that utterly in-the-red performance of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends," well-known to fans of Cocker and the Woodstock musical and cinematic offerings. This is easily one of the finer offerings to come from the Woodstock anniversary recordings. While the documentation on the disc is rudimentary - such as who the backing vocalists in fact were - the sound is terrific. - cduniverse.com

Recording for more than 30 years, Maria Muldaur has moved from jug-band music to Tin Pan Alley pop, blues, and jazz. It is the latter two genres that have most defined her output since the 1980s. A Woman Alone With the Blues, from 2003, was Muldaur's tribute to jazz vocalist Peggy Lee, and she's followed that with this set of 10 thematically linked odes to love. It's a testament to the subtle dramatics of her voice that she is equally convincing when singing of love on the rise, or of its melancholy demise. Smartly sequenced and warmly arranged, the disc moves gracefully from the sunshine to the moonlight. From dreamy anticipation to heartache, this is a portrait of the varied and elusive faces of love. - amazon.com

STRINGBEAN & THE STALKERS - Live @ The Ragin' Cajun (2004)

To millions of younger country music fans, David Akeman, better known as Stringbean, was one of the comedy powerhouses of the Grand Ole Opry and television's Hee Haw, of which he was one of the original cast members. As a banjo player, however, his work goes back to the 1940s and a three-year stint with Bill Monroe.

Akeman was born to a farm family in Annville, in Jackson County, KY, and he became interested in music at an early age -- no surprise there, since not only did his father play the banjo at local dances, but he was surrounded by players of considerable skill in his local community, from all of whom he learned the banjo. He built his first homemade instrument at age seven out of a shoebox and thread borrowed from his mother, and by the time he was 12 he traded a pair of prize bantams he had raised for a real banjo. He was already making the rounds of local dances and developing a reputation on the instrument, but not earning a living. Akeman spent time working for the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps, building roads and planting trees... - http://www.allmusic.com

JIMMY D. LANE - Legacy (1998)

The last time the great Jimmy Rogers held a guitar was during the final takes of "One Room Country Shack," the eighth track on this rocking second album from latter-day guitar virtuoso Jimmy D. Lane, Rogers's son. Passing the torch as well with his work on "Another Mule Kicking in My Stall," the elder Jimmy joined the similarly gifted guitarist Hubert Sumlin and drummer Sam Lay to support Jimmy D.'s follow-up to his debut CD, Long Gone. Despite his lineage, Lane hadn't decided to become a professional musician until he heard Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe," after which he put down his jackhammer and picked up his axe. Influenced not only by Hendrix, but also by Albert King, Albert Collins, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy D. has a power rock groove to go with his deeper, darker, bluesier groove that's showcased here on "Four O'Clock in the Morning" and Howlin' Wolf's powerful "Big House." - amazon.com

ANTHONY GOMES - Live (2008)

Canadian-born guitarist, singer, and songwriter Anthony Gomes is a critically acclaimed chart-topping artist who plays a style of modern electric blues that incorporates elements of rock, soul, R&B, and country. Born in 1975 in Toronto, Canada, to a Portuguese father and a Canadian mother, he began playing guitar in his early teens and moved to Chicago, IL, in the late '90s with hopes of establishing himself as a musician. After honing his craft on the Windy City club circuit, he moved to Nashville, TN, where he found a home for himself amid the city's renowned music scene.

Gomes made his recording debut in 1998 on the Urban Electric label with Blues in Technicolor, followed by Sweet Stringin' Soul in 2000. In 2002 he switched to 33rd Street Records for Unity and proceeded to win the 2003 BluesWax Artist of the Year award. This accolade elevated Gomes to the top of the blues field, and consequently he was able to draw increasingly larger crowds to his live performances, which increased in frequency and scope. Though he didn't release another album until 2006, Gomes' endless touring kept him atop the blues field, as he continued to be nominated for BluesWax Artist of the Year awards several years in a row.

Gomes' fourth album, Music Is the Medicine (2006), released on the Adrenaline Music label, was his first to chart, peaking at number four on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart. During his supporting tour of the album, the February 27, 2007, show at the Triple Door in Seattle, WA, was recorded and subsequently released in 2008 as the album Live. It features his band, the New Soul Cowboys, comprised of David Karns (bass, vocals), Peter Lang (drums), and Dylan St. John (keyboards, vocals). The first of his albums to document his on-stage performance ability, Live was his greatest commercial success to date, reaching number one on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart. ~ All Music Guide

JAMES COTTON, JUNIOR WELLS, CAREY BELL, BILLY BRANCH - Harp Attack! (1990)

This is a sort of blues harp summit meeting, featuring three players: James Cotton, Junior Wells, and Carey Bell, who all at one time had featured in the Muddy Waters band, plus a younger disciple, Billy Branch, who had, as they say, learned from the best. Highpoints include the Junior Wells solo track "Keep Your Hands Out of My Pocket," which is a terrific showcase for his distinctive harp style (he has a deliberately cleaner tone than the other three) and the opening "Down Home Blues," which is a sort of cutting contest where all four get a vocal verse, and an instrumental solo. Terrific stuff.

Personnel: James Cotton, Junior Wells, Carey Bell, Billy Branch (vocals, harmonica); Michael Coleman (guitar); Lucky Peterson (bass); Ray "Killer" Allison (drums).

Recorded at Streeterville Studios, Chicago, Illinois.

C.J. Chenier carries on the blues-drenched zydeco tradition of his father Clifton Chenier, but this effort, while competent, is just not as fun to listen to as a zydeco record ought to be. The arrangements by Vasti Jackson seem overwrought at times, as though the players (and there is no shortage here of guitarists, horns, or percussionists) are trying too hard. Bright highs and thick lows dominate the sound; one longs for more mid-range. C.J.'s voice sounds gruff, perhaps showing signs of wear and tear from ten years fronting the band he inherited from his father. Still, there are some fine cuts, like "Cheatin' on the Man You're Cheatin' With," "Lion's Den," and his dad's "No Shoes Zydeco," and C.J. remains one of the top talents on the zydeco circuit. ~ All Music Guide

GRAYSON CAPPS - Wail & Ride (2006)

A literate and impassioned songwriter whose song characters are often caught barely hanging on at the edges of American life, Grayson Capps is a bit like a New Orleans version of Tom Waits, albeit more of a roots rocker in actual musical execution. Capps was born April 17, 1967, in Opelika, AL, the son of a Baptist preacher and an Auburn University student. After his birth, both of his parents ended up being teachers in Brewton, AL. They moved to Fairhope, AL, when Capps was in the seventh grade, and it was there that he developed a lifelong fascination with theater, eventually earning a partial scholarship to Tulane University in New Orleans to study acting, graduating with a B.F.A. in 1989. But acting wasn't the only thing Capps studied at Tulane. He also learned to play guitar and joined a band called the House Levellers, who specialized in what the band called "thrash folk." The group signed with Tipitina Records in 1990 when Capps was barely 21 years old, and following a whirlwind and musically quite successful year, Capps left the band, choosing to remain and make his home in New Orleans. He started a new band with John Lawrence called Stavin' Chain and they signed with Thomas Ruf's Germany-based Ruf Records in 1998, releasing a single album, simply called Stavin' Chain, in 1999, before disbanding. Capps met Shainee Gabel, a young director who was filming a documentary called Anthem, and she ended up using several of his songs in the finished film. Capps had told Gabel about an unpublished novel his father, Everett Capps, had written, and once Gabel read it she knew she had to film it. She wrote a screenplay and the end result was the 2004 film A Love Song for Bobby Long, which featured Capps in a bit part and also used four of his songs as part of the soundtrack. The regionally released Grayson Capps album appeared in 2005 on Hyena Records followed by a solo debut proper, If You Knew My Mind, later that same year. During this time Capps continued to make his home in New Orleans, but the Katrina disaster at summer's close in 2005 forced him to leave the city, at least temporarily. A second solo project, Wail & Ride, also on Hyena, came out in 2006. Ruf Records re-released Stavin' Chain in 2007, and another Hyena release, Rott 'n' Roll, appeared in 2008. ~ All Music Guide

AEROSMITH - Pandora's Box (1991)

PANDORA'S BOX is a comprehensive 3 CD/cassette set documenting Aerosmith's years with Columbia (1972-1982). Among the 53 digitally remastered songs are 20 previously-unreleased recordings, alternate versions, unreleased live performances, rehearsal tapes and pre-Aerosmith recordings from Steven Tyler's band Chain Reaction. Also included is a 64-page booklet complete with previously-unpublished photos from the band's private collection, song-by-song commentary, and an essay by Rolling Stone's David Wild.

Released at a time when Aerosmith was in the midst of a major comeback while recording for Geffen Records, this 1991 three-CD box set was put out by the band's original label and is a treasure trove of material from the band's golden age of 1973-1982. Also included are previously unreleased Aerosmith demos, rarities, and live tracks along with solo material by Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, and Stephen Tyler's pre-Aerosmith band, Chain Reaction.

Unfairly labeled as America's answer to the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith was more of a musical motorcycle gang armed with a sassy attitude, riff-heavy guitars, and a ripe appreciation for a well-placed double entendre. Hits like "Sweet Emotion," "Walk This Way," and "Dream On" are all certifiable classics, but it's the lesser-known material like "Seasons of Wither," "Mama Kin," and "Major Barbra" that taps into the unfettered spirit that's earned the band such die-hard fans. The other appealing aspect of this legendary group is how its members have retained the innocence of being fans themselves. Covers of the Beatles ("Come Together, "Helter Skelter"), Otis Rush ("All Your Love"), Bullmoose Jackson ("Big Ten Inch Record"), and Tiny Bradshaw ("Train Kept a Rollin") evidence the group's slavish devotion to past masters. Recorded between 1966 & 1982.

Aerosmith: Joe Perry (vocals, guitar); Steven Tyler (vocals, harmonica, piano); Brad Dufay, Jim Crespo, Rick Dufay (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums).

V.A. - Cadillac Records - Music From the Motion Picture - Deluxe Edition (2008)

A dramatized history of Chess Records, "Cadillac Records" turns out to be a threadbare and homogenized account of the rise of the label’s most well-known stable of stars: Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter and Etta James. The movie peaks early with its opening scenes ripped from the pages of Can’t Be Satisfied, Robert Gordon’s wonderful biography of Muddy Waters with Alan Lomax tracking down McKinley Morganfield at the Stovall Plantation outside of Clarksdale, Mississippi. Once the narrative moves Waters to Chicago, the film starts leaving details as well as Chess’ brother Philip by the wayside. The movie touches on Little Walter’s demons, Waters’ womanizing, his animosity with Wolf and the paternalistic view Chess took over his charges but only superficially. In trying to include too much, Darnell Martin’s script glosses over the seamy underbelly of the travelling bluesmen, the complexity of the people involved and invents a romantic entanglement between Chess and James.

Deluxe Edition Two CD set. Cadillac Records stars Beyonce, Mof Def, Jeffrey Wright and Adrien Brody with the soundtrack featuring Beyonce, Mof Def, Columbus Short, Mary Mary, Raphael Saadiq, Solange, Little Walter and Nas with Olu Dara. The movie is about Leonard Chess who co-founded Chess Records, the pre-eminent blues label of the Fifties and Sixties, with his brother Phil. They formed Aristocrat Records in 1947 and the Chess label two years later with a mind-boggling flood of Blues, R&B plus Rock'N'Roll talent- Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Willie Dixon, Etta James and Little Walter. - amazon.com

CLARENCE 'FROGMAN' HENRY - Ain't Got No Home - The Best of Clarence 'Frogman' Henry (1994)

He could sing like a girl, and he could sing like a frog. That latter trademark croak, utilized to the max on his 1956 debut smash "Ain't Got No Home," earned good-natured Clarence Henry his nickname and jump-started a rewarding career that endures to this day around the Crescent City. Naturally, Fats Domino and Professor Longhair were young Clarence Henry's main influences while growing up in the Big Easy. He played piano and trombone with Bobby Mitchell & the Toppers from 1952 to 1955 before catching on with saxist Eddie Smith's band. Henry improvised the basic idea behind "Ain't Got No Home" on the bandstand one morning in the wee hours; when the crowd responded favorably, he honed it into something unique. Paul Gayten (New Orleans A&R man for Chess Records) concurred, hustling Henry into Cosimo Matassa's studio in September of 1956. Local DJ Poppa Stoppa laid the "Frogman" handle on the youngster when he spun the 45 (issued on the Chess subsidiary Argo), and it stuck. Despite some fine follow-ups -- "It Won't Be Long," "I'm in Love," the inevitable sequel "I Found a Home" - Frog sank back into the marsh sales-wise until 1960, when Allen Toussaint's updated arrangement melded beautifully with a country-tinged Bobby Charles composition called "(I Don't Know Why) But I Do." Henry's rendition of the tune proved a huge pop smash in early 1961, as did a Domino-tinged "You Always Hurt the One You Love" later that year. Frogman continued to record a variety of New Orleans-styled old standards and catchy originals for Argo (Chess assembled a Henry album that boasted what may be the worst cover art in the history of rock & roll), even recording at one point with Nashville saxist Boots Randolph and pianist Floyd Cramer. But the hits dried up for good after 1961. Henry opened 18 concerts for the Beatles across the U.S. and Canada in 1964, but his main source of income came from the Bourbon Street strip, where he played for 19 years. You'll likely find him joyously reviving his classics at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival every year come spring -- and his croak remains as deep and melodious as ever. ~ All Music Guide

SUZI QUATRO - What Goes Around - Greatest & Latest (2003)

One of those odd collections that flags its contents with a vague "greatest and latest" subtitle, but it's only when you get it home that you really discover what you have. Which, in this case, isn't too bad...at least if you don't mind not having the original versions of the best-known songs. All 18 tracks here are relatively recent (1995) recordings, whether they are the brand new numbers that point to the renaissance that Quatro was undergoing, or new takes on old hits -- most of the album draws from Quatro's back catalog, and her latest band does have a great time trying to recapture the manic energy of the original recordings, which may or may not do it for the casual listener. More fun, though, are the title track and her excellent revision of Springsteen's "Born to Run," both of which would deserve pride of place on any future all-consuming Quatro box set. - cduniverse.com

KELLEY HUNT - Mercy (2008)

Acclaimed Roots/Blues/Crossover artist/writer/vocalist/keyboardist Kelley Hunt unveils a stunning new generation of her music on Mercy - an intentional, intense collision between Hunt's righteous roots influences and contemporary overlays with rich veins of social and political commentary threading throughout. On Mercy there are great new songs from Hunt's pen and intriguing collaborations with writers Gary Nicholson, Dwight Liles, Jim Ritchey and Caryn Mirriam Goldberg. As usual Hunt covers considerable ground and crosses boundaries - there are funk grooves, rootsy neo-rock anthems, intense ballads, mournful blues plaints, latin-influenced introspections, alt-boogie and even New Orleans feels all channeled with rock-solid validity through Hunt's identity to make her various points on Mercy. RORY GALLAGHER - BBC Sessions (1999)

The resurrected Buddha acquired the rights to much of Rory Gallagher's prime material in 1999. They began their reissue program with his first two albums, then they moved to what most hardcore fans would consider the crown jewel of the series, a double-disc collection of Gallagher's BBC sessions. Like most lead guitarists (at least those of his generation), he would often expand his music when playing live, turning in vibrant, exciting versions of his material, peppered with great guitar solos. Although it lacks the kinetic spark generated whenever a musician performs in front of a live audience, BBC Sessions is one of the finest live sets in his catalog, thanks to its crystalline fidelity, strong performances, and classy presentation. Certainly, this collection isn't for anyone that isn't already devoted to Gallagher, but for those who are, there's plenty to cherish here - individual solos, impassioned vocals, and good liner notes. It's an excellent, worthy addition to his catalog, and it helps confirm Gallagher's gift as a blues-rock guitarist. - All Music Guide

MUD MORGANFIELD - Fall Waters Fall (2008)

Fans of the old man know that Muddy Waters, Godfather of the Blues, was truly a "Hoochie Coochie Man". And Muddy Waters' first-born son arrived in 1954 and was given his mother's maiden name. The boy was raised by his mother and often heard the nicknames "Muddy", "Mud Jr." and "Little Mud". Today, he says you can, "Just call me MUD!" Mud Jr. kept in contact with his dad over the years and "pops" was always there when Little Mud needed something. As a youth and young man, Mud Jr. kept a low profile. He was always involved with music on a personal level, but only recently has he stepped forward to embrace his musical gifts - a big, charismatic voice and stage pressence that can definitely be compared to his legendary father! Now, Mud Morganfield is stepping out to honor his dad, his dad's music, and to introduce his own flavor of blues. Watching Mud perform is like taking a trip to yesteryear to hear all of the old blues classics. Mud Morganfield sounds and looks like his old man in a way that no one else can. DAVID RAITT & JIMMY THACKERY - That's It! (2000)

One look at blues multi-instrumentalist David Raitt's last name will instantly indicate his pedigree: brother of bottleneck slide guitar legend Bonnie Raitt, son of Broadway actor John Raitt. Raitt played in a variety of local bands while growing up in Burbank, and later accompanied his sister to New York, serving as her stand-up bass player when she began her career playing coffeehouses in 1970. He moved back to California in 1972, this time in the northern county of Mendocino, where he quickly became involved in the local music scene, playing numerous clubs and events with a variety of area bands. Apart from an occasional tour with his sister (usually as her harmonica player), Raitt was largely content to remain local, running a successful yurt-building business. (Yurts are portable dwellings made with wood and canvas, which originated in Mongolia.) However, local connections with blues-rockers like Mark and Patrick Ford helped lead to a handful of recording sessions in the late '80s. In 1994, Raitt assembled an ecological benefit album called Edge of the Forest, which featured his band the New Mendocino All-Stars, as well as his sister. Raitt's first solo album, Take a Chance, was released in 1996. In 2000, Raitt recorded a classic-style electric blues album with childhood friend Jimmy Thackery, formerly of the Nighthawks; titled That's It, their collaboration was released on Patrick Ford's Blue Rock'it label. ~ All Music Guide

This Cd is a package of pure, modern blues/r&b, joy. Having know each other since they were kids David Raitt and Jimmy Thackery decided it was time to join forces and see what they could do in the sudio together. These recordings not only feature David's wonderful vocal skills and Jimmy's explosive guitar work but also some fine song writing by both. As a special bonus there is the guest appearance of David's sister Bonnie Raitt helping with vocals on two tracks. Add powerful rhythm and horn sections and, well, "That's it!"

LITA FORD - Wicked Wonderland (2009)

Whoever said absence makes the heart grow fonder must ve been thinking about the relationship between Lita Ford and rock n roll. The hard rock queen stepped away from her remarkable musical career back in the 1990s to devote herself to family and the surroundings of real life on a surreal Caribbean island, but with the call of the sonic wild getting louder and louder, she made the decision to dive back in at the deep end only to find that she had every bit as much love for the heavy rock grind. And as it turns out, the feeling is mutual. With Wicked Wonderland, her first full-length offering since 1995 s Black , Lita shows that her flair for sexy, stomping, searing sounds has only gotten more vivid which is mighty impressive, given a history that includes such classics as Kiss Me Deadly and the Ozzy Osbourne duet Close My Eyes Forever. This release, created in tandem with husband Jim Gillette whose own musical history is highlighted by his work with acclaimed metallurgists Nitro is a hard and heavy affirmation of the sensuality and smarts that ve carried her through three decades of action. The 15 cuts certainly touch on the sort of headbang-inducing riffage that gave Lita her start way back when, but there are also surprises aplenty from the smoking slide guitar that punctuates the bluesy Scream to the psychedelic industrial swirl that envelops Everything. It s a potent blend, propelled by in-your-face drumming and Lita s effortlessly steamy vocals. With pelvis-pounding rhythms and lascivious lyrics of tunes like the appropriately- titled Indulge and the so-nasty-it s-nice Crave , Lita shows off her trademark ability to purr seductively and deliver a well-placed knockout punch on no-holds-barred songs like Piece (Hell Yeah) . Wicked Wonderland showcases an artist who s clearly got plenty to say and no shortage of ways to say it. - amazon.com

One of two solo stars to spring from the ashes of the '70s all-girl hard rock band the Runaways, Lita Ford has long been a more frustrating, contradictory proposition for critics than former colleague Joan Jett. Ford is subtly feminist in her musical approach, displaying guitar heroics on the level of any male metal hero; the mere fact of her existence in the otherwise testosterone-driven heavy metal genre has made her a hero to some, but her persona has often been criticized as calculated to appeal to male adolescent sexual fantasies, simply embodying the standard wild-girl stereotypes of many male metal artists' lyrics.

Davies has an enviable resumé (she's worked with Albert Collins, John Mayall, Coco Montoya, Duke Robillard, and many others) and a significant discography dating back about 20 years. The tracks on Holdin' Court are loaded with her fine Stratocaster licks, and the album, which incorporates touches of swing, roots-rock, jazz, and surf-rock, is a varied and entertaining listen.

JONI MITCHELL - Hits (1996)

Mitchell is one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the rock era. By incorporating poetic lyricism and a jazzy harmonic sensibility into the troubadour tradition, she paved the way for everyone from Rickie Lee Jones to Sting. HITS features some of the best-known songs from her immense repertoire (MISSES highlights equally important, but less commercially successful, compositions). HITS begins and ends with early, acoustic guitar-based material. "Urge For Going" (previously unavailable on CD) and "Both Sides Now" both yielded reams of cover versions by the likes of Judy Collins, Tom Rush and countless others. Moving on through the stylistically divergent phases of Mitchell's career, the lush pop songs "Help Me" and "Free Man In Paris" segue into the starkly confessional piano ballad "River" and the slippery, jazzy feel of "Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody", adorned byLarry Klein's Jaco-manque fretless bass. HITS can only skimthe surface of Mitchell's prolific output; a truly thoroughchronicle would require a box set. But every song here is agem, and this is a perfect place for the uninitiated to begin. - amazon.com

LITTLE SMOKEY SMOTHERS & ELVIN BISHOP - Chicago Blues Buddies (2009) thumbup

It has now been almost fifty years since established Chicago guitarist Little Smokey Smothers began mentoring and befriending the young Elvin Bishop, who came to Chicago from Tulsa in 1960 looking for the blues. Those years have brought at least life’s share of twists and turns for each. Smothers maintained a steady but generally low profile on the windy city blues scene while Bishop gained renown with the Butterfield Blues Band and then struck out on his own noteworthy foray through blues and southern rock and, like many of his Chicago blues cohorts, relocated to the Bay Area in the late ’60s. Superb musical jamming and down home eating courtesy of Smokey’s kitchen chops have marked Elvin and his band’s Chicago visits, and Elvin and Smokey have helped each other through hard times and tough losses. Smokey’s health has been in decline in recent years, and Elvin has seized the moment to compile (with generous assistance from a number of labels and individuals) Chicago Blues Buddies, a musical monument to his friendship and musical teamwork with Smokey while all involved can savor the highly enjoyable results. - cdbaby.com

RICK ESTRIN - On The Harp Side (2008)

Most of you will recognize Rick Estrin’s name from his work with Little Charlie & The Nightcats. While Rick fronted that jump-blues styled band for close to 30 years, and continues to front and also lead the band now that Little Charlie has bowed out, this CD is a showcase for old-school electric blues, and Rick’s harp skills, rather than the jump blues the Nightcats have been know for. If you’re expecting the Nightcats sound here you won’t be getting that. This CD is (mostly) full of ‘50s and ‘60s style blues harp tunes, along the lines of music first heard from Little Walter, James Cotton, Rice Miller, and others. The album really is a labor of love for Estrin, as he covers songs by many of the artists that have influenced his own playing (4 of Rice Miller’s tunes). Rick also wrote 6 new songs (as well as reprising 1 song written for and recorded by The Nightcats several years back) for the CD, all them fitting in seamlessly with the 10 cover tunes. As stated by Rick in the CD’s notes, “People have been asking me for years to do a more low-down, harmonica-focused CD… here it is”. Yes, here it is… and it’s an absolute treat from start to finish! - stlblues.net

SOLOMON BURKE - Proud Mary (1969) thumbup

In 1969, Solomon Burke's long association with Atlantic Records had come to an end, and he hadn't had a major hit in several years when he strolled into the Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL to cut his first and only album for Bell Records. Proud Mary's lead-off cut was a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's titular hit tune (still in the charts when Burke recorded it), and while that may have seemed like a bald-faced bid for pop radio play, in Burke's hands the song became a bracing tale of life in the Deep South as African-Americans searched for liberation aboard the ship that carried them as slaves and put them to undignified labor serving wealthy whites. It was a bold conceit and Burke brought it to rich life, and while the rest of the album is hardly as surprising, it's as satisfying as anything he cut during the later part of his Atlantic tenure. The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section are in typically fine form here, accompanying Burke with rich, soulful passion while always serving the song and the artist ahead of displaying their own chops (keep an ear peeled for the potent groove of Roger Hawkins' drums and Eddie Hinton's succinct but blazing guitar solo on "That Lucky Old Sun"), and Burke brings the full weight of his fervent, churchy presence to each cut, especially the righteous "Uptight Good Woman" and a cover of "These Arms of Mine" that pays sincere tribute to Otis Redding while still sounding like pure Solomon Burke. Bell had already dropped Burke by the time Proud Mary's title cut had become a hit single, which seems like utter foolishness given the strength of this material -- Solomon Burke and the Muscle Shoals crew were a superb match, and this album finds them bringing out the best in one another. ~ All Music Guide

PINK FLOYD - Total Eclipse (1993)

TOTAL ECLIPSE was conceived in 1993, well into Great Dane's ambitious "Pink Floyd Project." Great Dane had wanted to put out a box set that would appeal to the fans who had been terribly dissapointed with "Shine On," Pink Floyd's official release. It's purpose was to attempt to bring to the fans a comprehensive overview of the band's career, substituting rare material and alternative tracks wherever possible. This is the reason why many of the early singles and B-sides were included (which many people question). Much "Top Gear" material was also included because not only were the sound sources believed to be the better than on any previously released RoIO, but also because it seemed that these tracks should also be represented in the band's history. TOTAL ECLIPSE was meant to be chronological (although a few tracks are out of order) and comprehensive; something that could be listened to from beginning to end.

QUINTUS McCORMICK BLUES BAND - Hey Jodie (2009)

Quintus McCormick's debut album "Hey Jodie!" is a keeper. Although he's been a stalwart on the Chicago Blues scene for nearly two decades, and toured with some of the best including James Cotton, Quintus McCormick hasn't had an album out until now. His debut from Delmark Records is called Hey Jodie! -- and in case you don't know that the name "Jodie" is a term for the guy who sneaks in to see your woman while you're out, a definition of the word is included right on the album's cover. Southern soul blues is the primary element of McCormick's style, though he started out playing rock and funk in his hometown Detroit. In Chicago around 1990, he played all sorts of music with many bands, and discovered his inner bluesman working with bassist JW Williams and his band. One night Williams called out to him "Man, Play The Blues" and Quintus McCormick knew that he meant it in a long-term sense. McCormick committed himself to the blues. McCormick likes songs with life-lessons in them, and mixed searing blues with funky stuff and soulful ballads. - prx.org

ARTHUR ADAMS - Stomp The Floor (2009) thumbup

It's been five years coming, but veteran blues session man Arthur Adams has a new album out on Delta Groove Records. It's called Stomp the Floor, and it features Adams' signature smooth soul-blues sounds, making for a satisfying listen. While not as well-known as he should be, Adams has had a long career as a guitarist, playing on records by Lowell Fulson, Nina Simone, Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, and many others. He's also written songs for King, Quincy Jones, Sam Cooke, and Albert King. Stomp The Floor contains a few straight blues tracks, but the album is really all about mellow soul-blues. Tracks like "Callin' Heaven" and "So Sweet" showcase Adams' calm, soothing vocals and effortless, jazz-inflected guitar playing. He's a very worthy performer and the album is definitely worth checking out.

ZORA YOUNG - The French Connection (2009) thumbup

Despite the prominent presence of celebrated blues artist Howlin' Wolf in her family tree, singer Zora Young grew up singing not blues, but gospel. Even when the Mississippi native shook off her roots at the age of seven to relocate with her family to Chicago, she attended the Greater Harvest Baptist Church and continued to sing gospel. It wasn't until later that she switched over to R&B, and evolved into a powerhouse blues vocalist with three decades of experience behind her. She has performed with a long list of artists, including Junior Wells, Jimmy Dawkins, Bobby Rush, Buddy Guy, Professor Eddie Lusk, Albert King, and B.B. King. Her recording credits include collaborations with Willie Dixon, Sunnyland Slim, Mississippi Heat, Paul DeLay, and Maurice John Vaughn, among others.

The love affair between Europe and the blues began in the early 50s with the arrival of Big Bill Broonzy who performed in Limoges, France, where most of the musicians on this album come from and where it was recorded. Zora first performed in Europe in 1981 and has followed with more than 20 tours in France making her the Chicago blueswoman record-holder! Inspired by Zora's and Bobby Dirninger's recording of "Two Trains Running" on her previous Delmark album ("Tore Up From the Floor Up"), producer Chris Dussuchaud sested a half-electric / half-acoustic album. "The French Connection" is Zora's awesome renditions of not only Chicago blues, but also gospel, jazz, deep Mississippi blues and country music... in her own, very special way. - amazon.com

ZAC HARMON - From The Root (2009) thumbup

Harmon is an IBC winner, a singer-songwriter, an excellent guitarist and a man who seems to want to explore many possibilities that are included in the blues genre - some sweet soul, R&B, some reggae, some acoustic and some tough down-home blues. He does them all well, and if I had one criticism of this CD, it would be that it moves around a little bit too much between these styles. Still, it's a fine showcase for his talents as a silky-smooth soul balladeer, a tough blues singer, and an axeman who can wrap his music around all of those styles. The CD shifts between sensuous, soulful blues like the opener, "Don't Give Me Another Reason," to the final tough acoustic "Man is Not Meant to be Alone." Harmon sounds like another of those blues talents who hasn't yet gotten enough national recognition for his talents. - community.post-gazette.com

AJALON - This Good Place (2009)

Probably better known in Europe and the UK, thanks to the efforts of Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman, Seattle based Ajalon is back with their third album, This Good Place. Ajalon, over the years, have aspired to create melodic progressive rock informed by life experiences from a Christian perspective. Don't let that last part throw you off as this band is more thoughtful in expression, and not simply another Jesus cheerleading team. Ajalon merely attempts to practice the imago dei by composing and performing sophisticated melodic rock much like Back and other Christian composers of note created classical music. Overall, This Good Place has a wistful, often melancholy, tone to it. The compositions can be bracing and moving without being excessively heavy as Not Man or Lullaby of Bedlam proves. Intrigue in composition and expertise in musicianship are at a premium throughout This Good Place where Randy George (a compatriot with Neal Morse) bends guitar, bass and keyboards over Dan Lile's percussion for a luxurious and expansive effect; again, take note of Lullaby of Bedlam, but also Redemption, with it's fusion motif, as representative pieces. Without doubt, much foresight and inspiration (possibly more than a little divine guidance) has gone into This Good Place's creation making for some grand and entertaining music. Highly recommended! - dangerdog.com

STEVE HACKETT - Please Don't Touch (1978)

Steve Hackett left Genesis in June 1977 and started his solo career in earnest with "Please Don't Touch". Unlike "Voyage of the Acolyte", which was a largely instrumental concept album steeped in the progressive rock idiom, this record is primarily a collection of songs featuring guest vocalists Richie Havens, Randy Crawford, and Kansas' Steve Walsh (their Phil Ehart also chips in here on drums). Although the sum effect is something of a patchwork, the individual pieces are often lovely. Over his career, Hackett has shown a propensity for extremes, in this case letting the jazzy and sentimental "Hoping Love Will Last" segue into the musical maelstrom of "Land of a Thousand Autumns" and "Please Don't Touch" (which will delight fans of Hackett's first record, although the Caroline CD inexplicably pauses too long between the two). In a nod to King Crimson (specifically Lizard), the title track is quickly cut off with the quirky carousel sounds of "The Voice of Necam," which itself dissolves into a mix of airy voices and acoustic guitar. The best tracks belong to Richie Havens: "How Can I?" ("Hackett"'s take on Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill") and the conclusive "Icarus Ascending." Hackett is no singer, so he wisely masks his voice in a "laughing gnome" effect on the delightful "Carry on Up the Vicarage" and hides behind Walsh's lead on "Narnia" and "Racing in A." Perhaps taking his cue from Gabriel (whose debut had appeared in 1977), Hackett seems eager to show his range as a songwriter. While he clearly has a closet full of good ideas and a genuine knack for interesting arrangements, Hackett is too much the eccentric Englishman to appeal to broad commercial tastes. Please Don't Touch remains a uniquely effective amalgam of progressive rock and pop; like his first album, he never made another one quite like it, perhaps because he again taps the concept's full potential here. ~ cduniverse.com

DOLLY PARTON - Dolly [BOX SET] (2009)

If the image of Dolly Parton was indeed to be carved in stone atop a great mountain in her native East Tennessee hills, it would be a worthy honor among the hundreds of honors and awards she has already received - for her accomplishments over the past 50 years as a singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, worldwide touring artist, Hollywood actor and TV personality, Broadway entrepreneur, author, amusement theme park owner, celebrated philanthropist, and more. Not the least of those accomplishments is her litany of hit songs and signature compositions spanning five distinct decades - in fact, Dolly Parton is distinguished for having charted at least one Top 5 country hit in each of those decades (from the '60s to the '00s). She has also charted at least one #1 country hit (if not a dozen) in each decade from the '70s to the '00s: "Joshua," "Jolene," "I Will Always Love You," "Love Is Like A Butterfly," "Here You Come Again," and many more in the '70s; "Starting Over Again," the Grammy Award-winning "9 To 5," "Islands In The Stream" (with Kenny Rogers), "Tennessee Homesick Blues," "Why'd You Come In Here Lookin' Like That," and many more in the '80s; "Rockin' Years" (with Ricky Van Shelton) in 1991; and "When I Get Where I'm Going" (with Brad Paisley) in 2005.

Now a unique new honor comes her way with the simply-titled "Dolly", the first multi-CD, multi-label deluxe box set compilation ever to represent her life's work, comprising 99 songs over four CDs. - starpulse.com

RAY CHARLES - Sings For America (2002)

The theme of this collection is, in large part, songs of patriotism, about specific American places, or testaments to the American spirit. Still, you do get the sense that the concept's rather vague, or at least has been applied pretty liberally in order to snag 20 songs that could fill up a collection to appeal to the national mood at the time of its release (about a year after September 2001). "Let It Be" and "Imagine," for instance, are classic songs, but (even leaving aside that they were written by Englishmen) how exactly do they embody the American character? Likewise, "That Lucky Old Sun" and "Over the Rainbow" might be venerated American songs, but they doesn't plug into a specifically American viewpoint as readily as, for instance, "New York's My Home" or even his cover of "Abraham, Martin and John." It's better to treat this as something of a ride through Ray Charles' take on Americana, which goes through country music, popular standards, gospel, covers of rock hits, and not a whole lot of the hard-driving soul for which he's most esteemed. It's an erratic set, spanning the early '60s to the inevitable 2001-2002 re-recording of "God Bless America," featuring Slash and Billy Preston, with six of the songs (including the equally inevitable "America the Beautiful") hailing from his 1972 album A Message From the People. Some of it's excellent, like "New York's My Home," the cover of Percy Mayfield's "The Danger Zone," and "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny"; some of it's fair; and the 1970s material, which comprises the bulk of the disc, too often tends toward the overly sentimental in both song selection and production. ~ All Music Guide

V.A. - Things About Comin' My Way: A Tribute To The Music Of The Mississippi Sheiks (2009)

Between 1930 and 1935, The Mississippi Sheiks were the top selling group of its time, largely due to their hit Sitting On Top if the World, also recorded by Cream, Bill Monroe, Howlin' Wolf and many more. Recorded and produced by Juno Award winning producer Steve Dawson, in Seattle, Vancouver, Ottawa and New York, this project fulfills a dream of Dawson's to pay tribute to the work of this unique and historic group. Features exclusive recordings by Bruce Cockburn, Madeleine Peyroux, John Hammond, Kelly Joe Phelps, The North Mississippi Allstars, Oh Susanna with Van Dyke Parks, Bill Frisell, Robin Holcomb, Jim Byrnes, The Carolina Chocolate Drops, and more. Each track is specifically for this project and does not appear on any other release. Rather than recreate the music, Dawson looked for artists who could re-interpret the music in interesting and refreshing ways. Ranging from traditional to the avant-garde, this tribute stands above others in quality and scope, and features artists well-known in blues, jazz, pop and rock genres. Dawson enlisted a house band throughout the Seattle sessions to provide a coherency to the recordings. Featuring jazz legend Wayne Horvitz (John Zorn, Zony Mash) playing keyboards, Keith Lowe (Bill Frisell/Fiona Apple) on bass and Matt Chamberlain (David Bowie, Peter Gabriel) on drums, this incredible band backed up a number of the artists in a marathon session. - amazon.com

CARLY SIMON - Greatest Hits Live (1988)

Okay, here's the problem: in 1975, Elektra released The Best of Carly Simon, which compiled her hits from 1971-1975. Simon then scored a couple more big hits for Elektra ("Nobody Does It Better," "You Belong to Me") before leaving the label in 1979, but not enough to justify another compilation. She had another hit on Warners ("Jesse"), where she spent the early '80s, crapped out on Epic, for whom she made one album in 1985, and revived her career on Arista starting with the Top 40 hit "Coming Around Again" in 1986. That means her catalog contained one obsolete best-of, while her other hits were strewn across several labels. The solution? A live album, of course. Except that Simon had developed stage fright. Nevertheless, she was persuaded to do one show at her Martha's Vineyard summer home, which was filmed for the HBO special and home video Carly in Concert: Coming Around Again and taped for this album. The set list contained the most familiar of the early-'70s hits - "You're So Vain," "Anticipation," "The Right Thing to Do" - some of the later ones - "Nobody Does It Better," "You Belong to Me," "Coming Around Again," and some recent material. The material was well performed, and though these of course were re-recordings, the album's gold-selling commercial success confirmed that Simon's fans were looking for a good career retrospective and willing to settle. ~ All Music Guide

SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY & THE ASBURY JUKES - From Southside To Tyneside... (2008)

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes have been considered the second best bar band to come out of southern New Jersey ever since Bruce Springsteen blew in off the boardwalk. Johnny’s trademark rough and gruff vocals always made him sound like a sincere soul man who has suffered for his art, even when he sings a happy song. And the blaring horn and pounding percussion sections of the Jukes turned every tune into a life and death match for the heart of the listener.

Double live CD from the master of rocking Rhythm and Blues. recorded at The Opera House, Newcastle on 26th November 2002. SEAN CHAMBERS - Strong Temptation (1998) thumbup

Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Sean Chambers counts Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan among his primary guitar influences, and their type of guitar stylings can be heard in his recordings and at his live shows. Raised on the Gulf coast of Florida, like so many others enamored with blues and blues-rock who played guitar, the younger Sean Chambers also lent his teenaged ears to recordings by Johnny Winter, Freddie King, B.B. King and Albert King, as well as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and ZZ Top. Chambers released his debut album, Strong Temptation in 1998, after 15 years of playing out in clubs and refining his vocal and guitar talents. After finishing up college, Chambers caught a break in Memphis in 1998 when he was asked to play with former Howlin' Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin at a Memphis blues festival. He subsequently toured with the veteran guitarist -- who recovered from cancer to get back on the road -- for the next four years. Chambers has shared stages and sat in with many of his blues and blues-rock heroes, including Derek Trucks, Gregg Allman, Kim Simmons, Tab Benoit, Jeff Healey, Leslie West, Rick Derringer, Pat Travers, Kim Wilson, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Walter Trout, Big Bill Morganfield, Koko Taylor, Ike Turner, and Robert Cray, among dozens of others who frequent the Tampa area club scene. Chambers tours mostly in Florida with the occasional foray north or to the Midwest or to Great Britain. His discography includes just two albums, but a third is in the works. They include Strong Temptation for Vestige Records and 2005's Humble Spirits for Rockview Records.

In 2001, Great Britain's Guitarist magazine named Chambers one of the Fifty Greatest Guitarists of all time. ~ All Music Guide

Overseas, he was a genuine hero, performing to thousands. But on his L.A. hometurf, sand-blown Venice Beach served as Ted Hawkins's makeshift stage. He'd deliver his magnificent melange of soul, blues, folk, gospel, and a touch of country all by his lonesome, with only an acoustic guitar for company. Passersby would pause to marvel at Hawkins's melismatic vocals, dropping a few coins or a greenback into his tip jar on the way by. Ted Hawkins was a unique talent, unclassifiable and eminently soulful. For a year or so, he was even a star in his own country. - All Music Guide

STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN & DOUBLE TROUBLE - Live At Montreux 1982 & 1985 (2001)

Stevie Ray Vaughan's frenetic Montreux performance is captured here on the guitarist's earliest available live album to feature Double Trouble. Liner note contributor David Bowie was in attendance at the 1982 show, and asked Vaughan that night to be his guitarist for the "Let's Dance" album and tour. Already an established artist on the Southern blues circuit, Vaughan was initially booed at this '82 appearance as part of a bill featuring "acoustic blues artists." He fittingly opens with Freddie King's "Hide Away" and then plays like a man possessed on "Rude Mood" and "Pride And Joy" (both soon to be released on 1984's "Couldn't Stand The Weather"). Vaughan absolutely sears the listener on "Love Struck Baby," and then slows the pace on the equally blistering "Dirty Pool." This set demonstrates that Vaughan not only wrote great blues songs, but brought them to another level in a live setting. Three years later, Vaughan and Double Trouble again deliver the goods in Switzerland, jamming the power blues on "Scuttle Buttin'" and "Say What!" The band is alternately slow-burning cool on Buddy Guy's "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and gorgeously emotive one "Life without You," one of 11 previously unreleased songs on Montreux.

PROCOL HARUM - All This And More (2009) [Only CDs]

2009 box set. Comprised of 3 audio CDs with 52 songs and a 22 track PAL DVD of rare live footage, documenting the forty year history of Keith Reid & Gary Brooker's legendary British band. Includes their early smash hits & rare b-sides, studio album tracks, plus an awesome sampling of live recordings from California, Edmonton, Golders Green, Utrecht, Irvine Meadows, Isle of Wight & Schio spanning the years 1969 to 2007.

Disc 1 cherry-picks the crop from the band’s first four years and albums, though for my money slips up in excluding both ‘Magdalene (My Regal Zonophone)’ from Shine on Brightly and ‘Whaling Stories’ from Home. Minor quibbles aside, it’s a decent harvest of Procol Harum’s first phase, distilled into 16 tracks. ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale‘, ‘Homburg’, ‘A Salty Dog’ and all five suites of the epic prog rock cornerstone ‘In Held ‘Twas in I’, are present and correct, as one would hope.

Aside from ‘Your Own Choice’, which appears on fourth album Home and mysteriously makes the opener here, Disc 2 covers 1971 and beyond, snaffling songs from Broken Barricades, right up to 2003’s The Well’s on Fire. These include the excellent and moving lament ‘For Liquorice John’ from Grand Hotel, the Gypsy campfire ambience of ‘Beyond the Pale’, and a restored version of ‘The Blue Danube’, recorded live in 1976 at the Bournemouth Winter Gardens and produced by Steve Winwood’s brother, Muff. Needless to say, the lion’s share of the goodies rightly come from the 1971-1977 era, prior to Procol Harum’s 14 year break.

Disc 3 is a real treat for those already familiar with the albums, as it brings together 14 live performances stretching back as far as 1969. Amongst the gems collected here are an extended workout of Home’s ‘Whisky Train’ from 2007 and a rendering of the epic ‘Last Train to Niagara’, which contains lyrics and musical motifs from Procol Harum’s long history, tied together by the central theme of a reflective train journey.

KATE WOLF - Weaver Of Visions: The Kate Wolf Anthology (2000)

Kate Wolf (1942 – 1986) was an American folk singer and songwriter. Though her career was relatively short, she had a significant impact on the folk music scene, and many musicians continue to cover her songs. Her best-known compositions include "Here in California", "Love Still Remains", "Across the Great Divide", "Unfinished Life", and "Give Yourself to Love". Born in San Francisco, California, she started her music career in the band Wildwood Flower before recording ten records as a solo artist. Her songs have since been recorded by artists such as Nanci Griffith and Emmylou Harris (whose recording of "Love Still Remains" was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1999). She died in 1986, at age 44, after a long battle with leukemia.

"Weaver Of Visions", compiled by Wolf's son and musical executor Max, replicates previous two-disc anthology, 1987's "Gold In California" almost entirely, subtracting only the somewhat dated protest songs "The Sun Is Burning" and "Full Time Woman." It also adds 10 live performances and two previously unheard studio outtakes. The live performances, including an excellent version of her comparatively rare song "Give Yourself to Love," are uniformly terrific, up to the quality of those found on the other posthumous Kate Wolf live albums. It's hard to get away from the feeling that the collection could have included some of the great studio recordings not featured on the earlier compilation, but this stuff is so good that this seems like a minor quibble.

STEVE HARLEY & COCKNEY REBEL - Greatest Hits (1987)

Of all the glam-rock acts to hit it big in England during the 1970s, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel were second only to David Bowie himself in terms of artsy ambition. Tunes like "Judy Teen" and "Love's a Prima Donna" may have been poppy enough to sail into the English singles charts, but they also boasted unconventional instrumentation (no Cockney Rebel single ever featured an electric guitar) and poetic lyrics with lots of surreal, Bob Dylan-esque wordplay. The result was a string of intelligent yet catchy singles, all of which are compiled on this collection. Songs like "Make Me Smile (Come up and See Me)" and "Mr. Raffles (Man It Was Mean)" still sound fresh today thanks to their ability to mix insistent pop hooks into their mix of unconventional sounds and oblique lyrics. Greatest Hits also includes a generous array of album favorites like "Sling It," an apocalyptic rocker driven by frenetic electric-violin riffs, and "Tumbling Down," a beautifully orchestrated epic that takes Cockney Rebel's penchant for fatalistic melodrama to operatic heights. Another interesting aspect of this collection is that it highlights Harley's oft-underrated skill with ballads: a particular highlight in this area is "(Love) Compared With You," a delicate, subtly orchestrated tune where Harley drops his yen for surrealistic lyrics to communicate in direct and elegantly romantic terms. The only real downside of Greatest Hits is that its surprisingly short track list omits some early gems like "Hideaway" and "Ritz": the compilers could have easily thrown in another two or three songs to fully flesh out the track selection. Despite this quibble, Greatest Hits is a fine collection that includes the majority of Cockney Rebel's finest moments and makes a great introduction to this group's ambitious, artsy style of pop. ~ All Music Guide

BERNADETTE PETERS - Bernadette (1980) thumbup

One of the biggest Broadway stars of her era, Bernadette Peters was widely acclaimed as the finest singing actress to come along since Barbra Streisand. Born Bernadette Lazzara on February 28, 1948, in New York City, she began singing and dancing while a toddler, and was already a member of Actors' Equity by the age of nine. By 1959, having adopted the stage name Peters, she appeared in a revival of The Most Happy Fella, subsequently co-starring in a road tour of Gypsy; however, she then retired from performing for a time, extensively studying acting and singing during her late-teen years. In 1968, Peters won a Theatre World citation for her performance in George M!; that same year, she also garnered a Drama Desk Award for her comedic turn in the off-Broadway spoof Dames at Sea. During the late '60s and early '70s, however, she suffered a series of theatrical disappointments, among them productions of On the Town, La Strada, W.C., and Mack and Mabel; as a result, by the mid-'70s she was also regularly appearing in film and television roles. Peters' Hollywood breakthrough arrived in 1979 opposite co-star Steve Martin in The Jerk; two years later, they reunited for the fascinating flop Pennies from Heaven. Returning to Broadway, she reached new peaks of success as the star of a pair of Stephen Sondheim musicals, 1984's Sunday in the Park with George and 1987's Into the Woods; for her work in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance, Peters earned a Tony Award. During the late '80s, she mounted a hit cabaret act, which focused largely on show tunes but also included an effective cover of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." After a disappointing return to Hollywood, Peters reappeared on Broadway in 1993, starring in The Goodbye Girl; however, the show closed after less than 200 performances. ~ All Music Guide

OLU DARA - In The World From Natchez To New York (1998) thumbup

Singer-trumpeter-guitarist Olu Dara has been knocking around New York City's jazz circles for almost 20 years. On "In the World" he embraces Caribbean rhythms, African highlife/socca riffs, and gut-bucket blues. Vaguely reminiscent of Taj Mahal's fanciful integration of world music and the blues, Dara consistently straddles urban and rural artistry. Sophisticated yet irresistibly down-home, this collection is festive, tuneful, and engaging. Songs like "Rain Shower" and "Natchez Shopping Blues" are clearly based in the American folk-blues idiom, while "Okra" and "Your Lips" are closer to an Afro-Cuban aesthetic. Dara's warm voice is limited but expressive, and his guitar playing fundamentally percussive. On the other hand, Dara's trumpet is unique and extremely lucid. This album comprises a fascinating tour of several musical cultures. - amazon.com

This album unites the gritty blues sounds of Los Reyes del K.O. with Chicago blues veteran Tino Gonzales’ soulful R&B and funky grooves - two generations of the blues!
