V.A. - Let Freedom Sing: The Music Of The Civil Rights Movement (2009)

Culling through 60 years of recorded music with roots that go even deeper, Time Life has created an emotionally powerful anthology that demonstrates no art form has done a better job of chronicling and conveying the African American experience than music. The three-CD set opens with “Go Down Moses,” a spiritual that was first recorded in 1914 by the Tuskegee Institute Singers. The version here is performed a capella by the gospel group known as The Southern Sons in 1941. The obvious parallels between the plight of the Israelites in Egypt and the unequal status of African Americans demonstrates why the Christian faith has resonated so strongly in their community. The song opens and closes with very somber vocals, contrasted against the middle section sung in an upbeat doo-wop style that reflects the jubilation faith can bring. There’s no change of moods or tempo when Billie Holiday delivers the gut-wrenching “Strange Fruit” from 1939, the oldest recording in the set. This haunting piece about lynching is just as powerful as when poet Lewis Allan wrote it. Segregation and Jim Crow laws are dealt with in Josh White’s “Uncle Sam Says,” where inexplicably men who risked their lives for this country were treated as second-class citizens by the military, and Brownie McGhee’s cover of Big Bill Broonzy’s “Black, Brown, and White” with the refrain “if your white, you’re all right/ if you’re brown, stick around/ if you’re black, oh brother, get back, get back, get back.” The latter was taken from one of the few remaining copies available, but the audible scratch and hiss is acceptable knowing the song’s inclusion ensures it will be preserved. When an artist of Nat “King” Cole’s stature and acceptance in the White mainstream still had to point out “We Are Americans Too” in 1956, the issues were far being resolved. It wasn’t just those who suffered from injustice that were aware of it and wanted it stopped. Ervin Drake wrote how there were “No Restricted Signs” in Heaven, performed by The Golden Gate Quartet. Although originally written in support of eleven Communist Party leaders convicted under the 1940 Smith Act, The Weavers’ “The Hammer Song (If I Had A Hammer)” the context of the song changed when Peter, Paul & Mary and Trini Lopez covered it. The children and young adults of the ‘60s decided “love between all of my brothers” included all races.

ELIZA LYNN - Haven (2009)

Working with Nashville producer/guitarist Thomm Jutz [Nanci Griffith, Mary Gauthier], and a core group of Music City's finest players (including Griffith drummer Pat McInerney and longtime Ricky Skaggs bassist Mark Fain), Lynn hits a deeply traditional vein only hinted at on her two previous critically acclaimed releases, 2005's Frisky Or Fair and The Weary Wake Up from 2007. Inspired and energized by her overseas successes, Lynn headed straight to Nashville and into Jutz' TJ Tunes Studios to record the album of her career. From the sultry groove established on the disc's opening track, "Hard To Let It Hurt," it's clear that, armed with the strongest and most personal songs she's ever written, the singer is taking no prisoners this time out.Built on a sturdy Appalachian foundation and soaked in the blues, Lynn's evocative singing voice, which has drawn comparisons to everyone from Bonnie Raitt to Peggy Lee, is the driving force and centerpiece of Haven. Her interpretation of "I'll Fly Away" transforms that gospel classic into a stirring, minor-key lament, and Lynn performs similar magic on the album's closing song, a bare-bones take on the traditional Irish hymn, "Be Thou My Vision." But, from "Rush Of The Fall," a poignant waltz-time ode to the loneliness of the road, to the banjo-driven, back-and-forth strle of "Pulling Of Tides," it's her own soul-penetrating songs that carry the day.

"Enormous talent" proclaims Putumayo of Eliza Lynn, who sings with a "big, room-filling voice [and] wields her guitar and banjo against a sensual, sassy backdrop of jazz-flavored blues, old-time country folk and soul". - Harp Magazine

ROXY MUSIC - Live (2003)

When the news filtered out that Roxy (Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera, and Paul Thompson, but, alas, no Brian Eno) were reconvening, skeptics anticipated a nostalgia trip by superannuated globetrotters. How wrong they were. These 22 sonically excellent recordings (made in 16 auditoriums, from Stuttgart to Adelaide via Vancouver) exhibit an envious attention to detail (Lucy Wilkins supplants Eddie Jobson's violin on "Out of the Blue" and there are even revving motorbike noises on "Virginia Plain"), but are far from clinically sterile. The godfathers of glam still manage to stoke up a fire behind the likes of "Remake Remodel" and Ferry continues to sing like a man handling a poisonous spider or having his back scratched by a supermodel. Their influence is still palpable - Suede must have re-written "Street Life" three times over. Pretty much everything on Live - from the art-rock of the early years to the urbane sleekness of "Avalon" - sounds as fresh as the 6 o'clock news. - amazon.com

RINGO STARR - Y Not (2010)

2010 album from the former Beatle and Rock icon. For the first time in one of popular music's most enduring and illustrious careers, Ringo Starr has decided to take charge and produce himself. The result is perhaps the most personal and impressive album of this Rock legend's entire solo career. The joyous result finds Ringo leading a smaller core group of old and new friends including longtime pal and recent brother-in-law Joe Walsh, Dave Stewart and longtime Roundheads member Steve Dudas on guitar, Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on keyboards, Don Was and Mike Bradford on bass. The album also features special guests like Joss Stone, Ben Harper and Richard Marx on vocals, Ann Marie Calhoun on violin and Tina Sugandh on tabla and chanting. Starr's former bandmate and longstanding mate Paul McCartney, who adds a characteristically brilliant bass part to the inspiring 'Peace Dream' and even more notably provides his unmistakably fabulous vocals to 'Walk With You,' an exquisite new composition by Starr and Van Dyke Parks. - amazon.com

THE AMAZING RHYTHM ACES - How The Hell Do You Spell Rhythum (1980)

A mainstream country-rock band similar in execution (if not commercial success) to the Eagles, the Amazing Rhythm Aces were formed in Memphis in 1974 by bassist Jeff Davis and drummer Butch McDade, who had earlier recorded and toured with the great singer/songwriter Jesse Winchester. After striking out on their own, Davis and McDade enlisted vocalist/guitarist Russell Smith, keyboardist Billy Earheart, Dobro player Barry Burton, and pianist James Hooker to develop a sound composed of equal parts pop, country, and blue-eyed soul. In 1978, the Aces released Burning the Ballroom Down, followed a year later by a self-titled effort featuring cameos by Joan Baez, Tracy Nelson, and the Muscle Shoals Horns; both were met with critical approval, but sold poorly. They released one final record, How the Hell Do You Spell Rhythum?, before disbanding. While Smith went on to become a successful songwriter, Earheart joined Hank Williams, Jr.'s Bama Band, and Cameron joined Sawyer Brown -- a group that, ironically enough, would find significant chart success in the 1980s with a sound similar to what the Amazing Rhythm Aces had created a decade earlier. After a hiatus of some 15 years, the Amazing Rhythm Aces re-formed in 1994. The Aces, now comprised of Smith, Davis, McDade, Earheart, Hooker, and new guitarist/mandolinist Danny Parks, marked their return to duty by releasing Ride Again, a collection of newly recorded renditions of their biggest hits. In addition, they also began composing new songs for a projected comeback album; although McDade's cancer-related death on November 29, 1998, temporarily halted that plan, Chock Full of Country Goodness finally appeared in mid-1999. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

ROY ORBISON - A Black And White Night Live (1989)

The best recorded Roy Orbison live disc ever issued, taken from the soundtrack of the HBO concert from the 1980s with VIP guests like Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello. This was a sort of magical video, and the performances are splendid, along with the good feelings involved. On the other hand, the performances are extremely reverential to the established studio versions of the songs (all of the hits are here), and intended to mimic them, so this isn't quite the same as a live album as it would have been done back when. The pity is that neither Monument nor MGM ever taped any complete concerts by Orbison from the 1960s, and all we have are the TV appearances from Europe. ~ All Music Guide

RICK DERRINGER, TIM BOGERT, CARMINE APPICE - The Sky Is Falling (2009)

Released on Fuel 2000, The Sky Is Falling is actually a reissue of the Doin' Business As... Derringer, Bogert & Appice album that was first released in Europe in 2001. In this short-lived power trio, guitarist and producer Rick Derringer reportedly “replaced” Jeff Beck in the “follow-up” to 1973’s Beck, Bogert & Appice album (their rhythm section is, of course, made up of ex-Vanilla Fudge members bassist Tim Bogert and rock & roll über-drummer Carmine Appice. Nah. While this doesn’t reach those lofty heights. Strictly out of its time and element -- from the songs to the production -- as a hard rock album with well-written compositions, excellent vocals, and musicianship, it works very well. Hearing the set in 2001 was just plain weird given what else was going on in popular music at the time. Hearing it in 2009 with its new title feels almost right, since rock music is deliberately trying to return to the 1970s. These cats are all strict super-choppers and studio professionals. All of them have been recording since the 1960s. The fact that this music continues to have teeth is one thing, but that it’s well arranged and raucously played, and offers consistent hooks, excellent melodies, and vocal harmonies is quite another. Standout tracks here include the title track, “Blood from a Stone,” and the scorching “Dawn of Love.” The Fuel 2000 edition also includes a pair of bonus tracks, with the band offering live versions of two Derringer classics, “Hang on Sloopy,” which he originally recorded with the McCoys in the late '60s, and his now ubiquitous party anthem, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Hoochie Koo.” ~ All Music Guide

EMMYLOU HARRIS - Anthology - The Warner-Reprise Years (2001)

Gorgeous-voiced Emmylou Harris’ three-decade journey as an interpreter and distinctive stylist has resulted in some of the most satisfying sounds in contemporary music. Indeed, Harris has mastered the depth and breadth of the American roots songbook like no other artist. Born in Alabama in 1947 and raised in Virginia, she was "discovered" by members of The Flying Burrito Brothers, who saw her perform in a Washington, D.C. club. They hooked her up with soon-to-be ex-Burrito Gram Parsons, who hired her to sing on his first solo album, GP, in 1972, and his follow-up, Grievous Angel, the following year. Since then, Harrris has evolved from duet partner to keeper of the flame, from sweetheart of the rodeo to bluegrass champion to alt-country godmother. Spanning 1975-1990, the 2-CD Anthology: The Warner/Reprise Years celebrates Harris’ solo beginnings, her stint with the ever-changing Hot Band, and later collaborative highlights. It features duets (Roy Orbison, Don Williams), a trio (Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt), as well as backing performances from some of the top names in country and rock—including Vince Gill, Waylon Jennings, Ricky Scaggs, Rodney Crowell, James Burton, Duane Eddy, Mark O’Connor, Ry Cooder, David Lindley, and Kate McGarrigle. - rhino.com

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Desert Blues 1 & 2

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

Desert Blues 1 - AMBIENCES DU SAHARA (1995)
"Desert Blues" takes us on a journey through the rich traditions of ballads from the Sahara, the Sahel and neighbouring African regions. This double CD (some two and a half hours playing time) presents the musical cosmos of Africa at its most tranquil, sung by the most magnificent voices. These are spellbinding voices indeed, poignant in their melancholiy, jubilant in their joy. "Songs like waves at night", in the words of Bruce Chatwin. This is music that touches the soul. It is, according to the Tuareg, music that heals. Tone and mood reflect the breathtaking landscapes of desert, steppe and forest, telling of ancient civilisations and the peoples who live there: Tuareg, Mandinka, Fula, Moors... Featuring the great bards, Senegal's Baaba Maal and Youssou N'Dour, as we never heard him before and introducing for the first time ever on record popular Fula singer Abou Djouba. With Grammy award winner Ali Farka Toure from Mali accompanied by Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal. With female vocalists Oumou Sangare and Sali Sidibe. Hassan Hakmoun presents gnawa music from Morocco. With the crystalline voice Dimi Mint Abba, "Africa's greatest singer" according to Ali Farka Toure, and Gambia's kora virtuoso Tata Dindin. With Kante Manfila from Guinea, who accompanied Salif Keita for many years. With Abdel Gadir Salim and Hamza El Din of Sudan. And with Aster Aweke and Mahmoud Ahmed of Ethiopia, whose soul-influenced and blues-inspired arrangements are pure enchantment.

Desert Blues 2 - REVES D'OASIS (2002)
As on the initial volume, this lavishly illustrated and annotated two-CD set explores assorted blueslike traditions found in and around the Sahara. Many of these artists use pentatonic scales and yes, their earthy vocals are often reminiscent of acoustic North American strains. But as each song unfolds into the next, like stanzas of an epic poem, individual identities and nationalities emerge loud and clear. Malian troubadour Boubacar Traore's woebegone keening could melt a heart of industrial-grade granite, while Momo Wandel Soumah of Conakry, Guinea, trades licks with a honking sax and periodically breaks into an irrepressible talking blues. When, or even if, African and Western players first began to influence one another is irrelevant in the face of such soul-stirring beauty. Wherever these tunes originated or have traveled since, they deal with real life in all its heartbreak, frustration, and glory and are triumphs of fierce, vulnerable humanity. - amazon.com

JIMMY BOWSKILL - Live (2009) thumbup

Somewhere in Canada, tonight, an 18-year-old is taking the stage and blowing away an audience with his mastery of both blues and rock guitar. That kid is Jimmy Bowskill. His newest album, "Live", is 12 songs of guitar soaked tracks that go a long way to keeping real rock music alive and well. The disc opens with the Bowskill penned “Far From Reality,” a song that showcases the creative forces inside the youngster’s mind. His soul is also evident in the classic songs he reworks, including “Walk In My Shadow” and “Ride a Pony” by Free and “Rattlesnake Shake” by Peter Green. Jimmy’s band is a three-piece that harkens back to an era when people went to shows simply to bask in the music being blasted out from a Les Paul guitar and a Marshall amplifier. Bowskill rocks throughout but still shows other sides of his musical persona on “Link Into Your Chain” and “Three O’clock in the Morning.” From start to finish this is a CD that will have one wondering what one has to do in this day and age to get a record contract and become a real musical star. Jimmy Bowskill is one of brightest shining stars for people who love REAL rock and blues music. - jimmybowskill.com MULTIUPLOAD

V.A. - Motown 50: Yesterday - Today - Forever (2008)

The music of Motown means a hell of a lot to a hell of a lot of people. So how do you compile a definitive best of for the label's 50th anniversary without leaving swathes of the listening public in the cold? Well Universal Music – of whom Motown is now a subsidiary – think they have the answer. Instead of drafting in the experts with their own agendas and subjective opinions or using potentially flawed statistics like record sales or critical acclaim, they set up a four week online poll to choose the top 50 Motown songs of all time and let the people do the talking. - bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/jjcz

V.A. - A Motown Christmas (1999)

This 24-track double LP was originally released on September 1973, and then later on CD in 1995. The funky and largely secular holiday set includes seven songs by Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, five by Diana Ross & the Supremes, and four each by Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. The track listing is filled with classic Christmas songs, including "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Jingle Bells," "Silver Bells," and "White Christmas." Some of the offbeat gems in the collection include Diana Ross' cover of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music and Stevie Wonder's beautiful "Ave Maria." Culled from individual Christmas albums released by Motown during the late '60s, this is the definitive version, with a wonderful Free to Be You and Me-style cover. Overall, a warm and nostalgic Christmas album and one of the best of its kind. Two inferior Christmas packages borrowing from this larger set were released, a ten-track Merry Christmas From Motown in 1996 and a 12-track version of A Motown Christmas in 1999. ~ All Music Guide

YAZOO - In Your Room (2008)

Yazoo (known as Yaz in the U.S.) are an English synthpop duo from Basildon, Essex. They had a number of top ten hits in the British charts in the early 1980s. Formed in late 1981 by former Depeche Mode songwriter Vince Clarke (synthesizer) and English singer Alison Moyet (vocals), Yazoo was signed to Mute Records in the United Kingdom and (as "Yaz") to Sire Records in the United States. Yazoo's debut single "Only You" backed with "Situation," was released on 15 March 1982 and rose to number two in the UK charts. Yazoo released two successful studio albums, Upstairs at Eric's in 1982 and You and Me Both in 1983. Shortly after, Moyet and Clarke decided to break up. Moyet pursued a solo career while Clarke went on to form Erasure, another synth pop duo. - wikipedia

'In Your Room' is the comprehensive collection of the recordings of legendary 80s pop-synth group Yazoo. This box set contains the two studio albums, 'Upstairs At Eric's' and 'You And Me Both', and two discs featuring B-sides, remixes and rarities as well as a DVD containing the music videos and a short documentary of the band. Despite being short-lived, Yazoo recorded many memorable hits such as 'Only You', 'Situation' and 'Don't Go', which ensures their legacy in pop. - amazon.com

LOVE - Love Lost (2009)

Love was an American rock group of the late 1960s and early 1970s. They were led by singer, songwriter and guitarist Arthur Lee and the group's second songwriter, guitarist Bryan MacLean. One of the first racially diverse American pop bands, their music reflected different influences, combining elements of rock and roll, garage rock, folk and psychedelia. Love Lost was recorded in 1971, during a brief, little-known period during which Love was signed to Columbia Records. Lee and the then-current Love lineup--bassist Frank Fayad, guitarist Craig Tarwater and drummer Don Poncher--recorded an album's worth of new material for the label. But after the band left the company, the recordings sat unreleased and unheard until now. The material on Love Lost--comprised of the unreleased Columbia sessions, plus five unreleased acoustic demos from the same period--captures Love in a transitional phase, charting the next step in Lee's idiosyncratic musical trajectory, following the lush garage-psychedelia of the classics Da Capo and Forever Changes, and the bluesier direction of the hardrocking False Start and Out Here. Many of the songs included on Love Lost would resurface, often in radically different form, on subsequent Love releases, and on Lee's fabled solo album Vindicator. But the original versions included on Love Lost, boast a playful looseness that's absent from most of Lee's later work, as well as a raw, edgy urgency that underlines his credentials as an early progenitor of punk-rock attitude. Love Lost also features three songs: "For a Day," "Trippin' & Slippin'" and "C.F.I. Instrumental" - that have not previously been released, in any form. With a treasure trove of vintage Love music that has never before been heard by fans, Love Lost is a major addition to Arthur Lee and Love's body of work, and its release is a major event for Lee's fervent fan base. Recorded on New Year's Day, 1977 at the now-vanished Palladium in New York, this set from the legendary Band drummer Levon Helm together with equally well-known fellow musicians like Dr. John, Paul Butterfield, and Steve Cropper is like a hype-free version of THE LAST WALTZ. Songs from the band's eponymous (and deleted) mid-'70s album like "Milk Cow Boogie" and "Rain Down Tears," the latter including Butterfield's ghostly harmonica, are interspersed with the Band favorite "Ophelia" and classics like "Sing Sing Sing" and "Got My Mojo Working." The performances are uniformly stellar, the band rocks and rolls in all the right places, and Helm is in fine voice throughout. MULTIUPLOAD

BLUES COMPANY - Two Nights Only (2001)

Since the '60s, the blues have inspired practically every generation of enthusiastic young, white musicians. Blues Company itself hasn't been around quite that long. The band started up its blues crusade on 20th May 1976. That was the day they first climbed on stage to fire up the audience into a twelve-bar frenzy. After countless other live missions, they proudly celebrated their first 30 years in the spring of 2006. Initially, Blues Company concerts were not just a mix of fun and hard work. They were pioneering events. Because until Blues Company came to be, blues in Germany – performed by professional bands – quite simply didn't exist. What did exist were tours by American blues greats, who often enjoyed higher esteem in Europe than in their homeland. The Blues Company musicians backed up many of these bluesmen at their concerts in Germany. Thus they not only got to know the old masters, they garnered the admiration of countless blues freaks. - bluescompany.de MULTIUPLOAD

B.B. KING - Greatest Hits (1998) [2008 Remaster]

Mississippi born Riley B. King began playing music on the streets of his native Indianola in the '40s, eventually moving to Memphis to pursue a career as a bluesman. He found a home as a DJ on legendary Memphis radio Station WDIA in the early '50s, a position he used to further his budding reputation as a guitarist/singer to be reckoned with. His on-air moniker, "the Beale Street Blues Boy" ultimately metamorphosed into his stage name. He spent the '50s cementing his legend as an energetic performer, playing with Johnny Ace and Bobby "Blue" Bland and on his own. His very modern, urban style was influenced not only by T-Bone Walker, but by jazz guitarist Charlie Christian. King's gestalt was miles away from the blues' rural beginnings, relying on witty, sophisticated lyrics and almost jazzy rhythms. His signature guitar style, as played on his trademark Gibson hollow-body "Lucille," combined quick vibrato with cutting, single-note lines and aggressively bent notes. His boisterous vocals, entertainment-value showmanship and gregarious personality made him beloved not just to blues aficionados, but to the larger pop audience. - cduniverse.com MULTIUPLOAD

The eclectic Toronto blues-rock outfit Big Sugar was primarily the project of singer/guitarist Gordie Johnson, who teamed with bassist Terry Wilkins and drummer Al Cross to record the group's 1992 self-titled debut LP. By the time of 1993's Five Hundred Pounds, Wilkins was missing from the line-up; a number of guest musicians fleshed out the recording, among them multi-instrumentalist Kelly Hoppe, who (along with new bassist Garry Lowe) was installed as a permanent member by the 1995 EP Dear Mr. Fantasy. Drummer Walter "Crash" Morgan replaced Cross during Big Sugar's subsequent tour of the U.S.; sadly, while playing a date in Iowa, Morgan died onstage, and was replaced by ex-Odds drummer Paul Brennan in time for the 1996 release of Hemi-Vision. Gavin Brown then assumed Brennan's duties on 1998's Heated. The band remained busy in the 2000s, with albums like Brothers and Sisters, Are You Ready? and EPs such as Dear M.E.. ~ All Music Guide

10. Stones In My Passway
11. You Are My Heaven

On "Me, My Guitar and the Blues", Chris Thomas King ventures out into eclectic musical territories. King sings and plays all the instruments on his first disc for the Blind Pig label. Recorded in New Orleans, this release retains some of those Crescent City funk influences while "Superstitious Blues," "Gambling Woman," and Robert Johnsons' "Stones in My Passway" are gritty acoustic delta blues. However, the majority of this release finds King reaching for a broader more popular approach that will likely turn off blues purists. "Born Under a Bad Sign" injects hip-hop into this blues classic, "You Are My Heaven" is comparable to the soul sound of Robert Cray, while the synth laden "Stay Just As You Are" would be the obvious pick for crossover radio play specifically going after a more mainstream pop audience. ~ All Music Guide MULTIUPLOAD

MAVIS STAPLES & LUCKY PETERSON - Spirituals & Gospel (1996)

01. Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen

03. He's Got The Whole World In His Hands
04. If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again

08. Were You There
09. Go Down Moses
10. Steal Away
11. Swing Low Sweet Chariot
12. Down By The Riverside
13. Stand By Me

It's moments like these when you wish you hadn't used words like "spine-tingling," "passionate," and "gritty" in other reviews. By the time of these 1996 duo sessions, Staples's voice had gotten grainier and earthier than it was during her glory days, and is all the more expressive and heart wrenching because of it. Meanwhile, Peterson's work on Hammond B-3 and piano is nothing short of astonishing--urgent, soulful, and pulsating-yet it never overwhelms Staples's burning pleas. Billed as a tribute to Mahalia Jackson, these 13 familiar cuts are soaked to the bone with blues inflections that deftly illustrate the intimate relationship between blues and spirituals. The pair's inspirational sermon will make believers out of even the most resolute cynics. - amazon.com

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Lilith Fair: A Celebration Of Women In Music (1998)

If you need something to pump you up for the upcoming second edition of Sarah McLachlan's all-female touring festival, "Lilith Fair - A Celebration of Women in Music" is the ticket. This two-disc compilation features 25 live cuts from the inaugural trip. On first spin, it's hard not to notice the range and sheer power of the vocals here. Many of the artists give performances that eclipse their studio work. The most obvious example of this is the opening "Mississippi," where Paula Cole unleashes a voice larger than life. Predictably present is McLachlan's "Building a Mystery," the definitive Lilith song, which began its assault on the air waves at the start of last year's tour and, well, kept building. The house that Sarah built is still growing strong. Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music is satisfying proof. - amazon.com MULTIUPLOAD

Similar in scope to Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music, which captures the inaugural tour, the 1998 festival is presented on volumes 2 and 3, with each disc available separately this time around. Volume 2 offers a large dose of the folksy acoustic fare we've come to associate with VH-1 (i.e., Natalie Merchant, Lisa Loeb, Shawn Colvin), with a side helping of angry-young-woman rock (Tracy Bonham, Sinead O'Connor, Holly McNarland) and an assortment of other performers. While wholly enjoyable, the standouts are Queen Latifah's diva-style dish on "Life," O'Connor's impassioned "Fire of Babylon," Angelique Kidjo's West African pop tune "Never Know," and Emmylou Harris's duet with Sarah McLachlan on "Angel," which transports the Surfacing hit to realms heretofore unrealized. - amazon.com

14. Spit of Love - Bonnie Raitt

A document of the 1998 tour, Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music, Vol. 3 is thus far the most lively and affecting recording of Sarah McLachlan's summer festival. From the percussive chop-socky blues of Emmylou Harris's "Deeper Well" to Holly Cole's richly intoned "Onion Girl" to Sixpence None the Richer's quirky take on the pop hit "Kiss Me" to Rebekah's sparsely searing "Little Black Girl," the women presented here are fierce, fiery, and fabulously fruitful. Included also are Suzanne Vega's late-'80s signature song, "Luka," the Indigo Girls' banjo porch rocker "Get Out the Map," and N'dea Davenport's sultry-smooth "Underneath a Red Moon." While some notable '98 participants lack representation here (where are Paula Cole, Missy Elliot, and Lucinda Williams?), this volume is a proud achievement of fine production and optimal sequencing, and the performances are of greater diversity than offered previously. - amazon.com

If you've ever heard the lonesome harp playing that graces the Rolling Stones' "Miss You," then you've experienced the phenomenal harmonica skills of Sugar Blue. The talented instrumentalist has been performing since the age of 10 - nearly 50 years now - and contributed his blazing harp sound to such Stones albums as 1978's Some Girls, 1980's Emotional Rescue, and 1981's Tattoo You. More importantly, for the blues music fan, Blue has played alongside such giants as Willie Dixon, Louisiana Red, Lonnie Brooks, and Son Seals, among many others. The cat is so talented that he's even backed hardcore jazz legends like Stan Getz and Paul Horn, as well as pursued a solo career of note.

In a set about nearly 90 minutes (which is documented on CD in nearly the whole length, and the TV-Edition about 56min. on DVD) Luther burns down a real blues-firework for his fans. As he has known, that this concert would be the last documented one.

BILLY LAVENDER - Memphis Livin (2009)

When artists such as Billy Lavender and Brad Webb walk into a club, it's not uncommon for the band to stop in the middle of a song to announce their entrance. When artists such as U2 and BB King are in need of talented singers, they turn to Memphis in search of local legends such as Reba Russell. When the European blues are in search of legendary musicians, they turn to famed artists such as Blind Mississippi Morris, Danny Cochran or Russell Wheeler with his magical B-3 Leslie. Let's not forget Vince Johnson, whose smooth voice, stage presence, and entrancing harp transport us all to Beale Street. Memphis Livin is more than just an album. It's the very essence of the blues genre. Memphis Livin, featuring the finest musicians Memphis has to offer, encompasses virtually every form of blues from a Kansas City shuffle to the truly greasy northern Mississippi style. It has been said and remains true to this day, that Beale Street is the boot camp of the blues. If you can play there, you can play anywhere in the world. Behind the blazing leads of Billy Lavender and the chest- thumping drums and percussion of Tony Adams, Memphis Livin will ensure that the blues spotlight remains where it belongs - shining brightly on the home of the blues and those real heroes who have dedicated their lives to ensuring this genre lives on for many more generations to come. - i55productions.com

LEO SAYER - Singles A's and B's (2006)

Leo Sayer is an English-born singer-songwriter and musician whose singing career has spanned four decades. A distinctive singer-songwriter, Sayer was a top singles and album act on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1970s. His first seven hit singles in the UK all reached the Top 10 - a feat first registered by his one-time manager, Adam Faith. From his first hit with "The Show Must Go On" in 1973 to the present day, Sayer has never been missing from the charts for longer than five successive years.

Three CD set featuring all the A and B-sides from Leo Sayer's most prolific period during the '70s, '80s and beyond. Best known for hits like 'Long Tall Glasses', 'You Make Me Feel Like Dancing' and 'When I Need You', Sayer was a songwriter and performer before that string of hits and long after, creating albums that were virtually ignored until recent years. Unlike many other '70s hitmakers, Sayer was a respected composer and had hits in the UK before crossing over the pond and becoming a sensation in the U.S. Here's Leo in all his glory! HERE

RY COODER - Music By Ry Cooder (1995)

"Music By Ry Cooder" is an anthology of Cooder's film music projects and includes some previously unreleased songs. Since he's a limited vocalist with erratic songwriting skills, one could justifiably argue that the soundtrack medium is the best vehicle for Ry Cooder's talents, allowing him to construct eclectic, chiefly instrumental pieces drawing upon all sorts of roots music and ethnic flavors (often, but not always, employing his excellent blues and slide guitar). This two-CD, 34-song compilation gathers excerpts from 11 of the soundtracks he worked on between 1980 and 1993 (three of the cuts, from the 1981 film Southern Comfort, are previously unreleased). As few listeners (even Cooder fans) are dedicated enough to go to the trouble of finding all of his individual soundtracks, this is a good distillation of many of his more notable contributions in this idiom, although it inevitably leaves out some fine moments. Still, it's well programmed and evocative, often conjuring visions of ghostly landscapes and funky border towns. ~ cduniverse.com MULTIUPLOAD

V.A. - All This And World War II (1976)

This double album is the soundtrack to an 88 minute movie from 20th Century Fox, which features black and white World War II newsreel footage and clips from feature films put to the sounds of the sixties ... in fact, guest stars performing Lennon/McCartney songs. A memorably sarcastic musical coupling occurs in the film when footage of Hitler at his mountain retreat in Berchtesgaden is shown accompanied by "The Fool On The Hill"! The film is directed by Susie Winslow, produced by Sandy Lieberson and Martin J. Machat, from a dream by Russ Regan (Executive Producer) Music Director, Lou Reizner. Arranged and Orchestrated by Wil Malone. The London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Harry Rabinowitz, and The Royal Philharmonic by David Measham. The Bee Gees actually recorded six of the songs, the other three being "Lovely Rita", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and "She's Leaving Home", but their vocals were replaced when other artists became available. The gatefold sleeve contains the two albums in inner sleeves that contain all the lyrics. Some lyrics are slightly altered from the copyrighted work to "meet the artistic requirements of the performers". Also enclosed is a large poster with splendid drawings of each of the guest stars. The complete package design, and the illustrations were by Clyde Terry and Jack Room. MULTIUPLOAD

LUTHER DICKINSON & THE SONS OF MUDBOY - Onward & Upward (2009) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Just three days after the death of his father, Memphis (and Muscle Shoals and Miami) music legend Jim Dickinson, Luther Dickinson opened the doors to the Zebra Ranch studio in Independence, Mississippi and recorded Onward and Upward, an album of gospel songs and hymns over the course of a few hours. Luther, one third of the North Mississippi All-Stars and now a member of The Black Crowes, was joined by an ad hoc group dubbed The Sons of Mudboy (an homage to his late father s influential rock band Mudboy and the Neutrons) who were all close to Dickinson the elder and wished to address his loss in a musical way. The Sons of Mudboy include two veterans of the original Mudboy: Sid Selvidge (guitar, vocals) and Jimmy Crosthwait (washboard, vocals). Also on the session were Jimbo Mathus (guitar, mandolin, banjo, vocals) formerly of the Squirrel Nut Zippers and of the South Memphis String Band, Steve Selvidge (guitar, dobro, vocals) and Paul Taylor (washtub bass) as well as vocalist Shannon McNally. - amazon.com MULTIUPLOAD

BAD COMPANY - In Concert: Merchants Of Cool (2002)

A hard rocking set from the '70s staples, recorded live in 2001. Evidenced by the way one hit song follows another, it's obvious they can still spark that guitar rock magic. Of particular interest is the new single, one of two studio tracks, called "Joe Fabulous" which sounds like Bad Company 2K2.

Formed from the ashes of Free, Bad Company was an immediate success in 1974. With guitarist Mick Ralphs's bluesy grind perfectly complementing singer Paul Rodgers's ardent testifying, they combined the blues with stomping rock to create some fine good-time music. And, like so many good-time bands, they couldn't let the party end, re-forming with varying lineups throughout the next two decades. Merchants of Cool, a live album selected from gigs in Denver and Anaheim in 2002, sees them at their strongest in years. With Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke from the original outfit and guitarist David "Bucket" Colwell, now a member of more than 10 years' standing, they're supremely tight, running through a succession of hits like "Can't Get Enough," "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Burnin' Sky," "Rock and Roll Fantasy," and Free's immortal "All Right Now." Mostly, the songs are well-honed and urgent, free from indulgent solos, but Rodgers--whose voice has always been Bad Company's main attraction--leaves too many choruses to the crowd. Two new studio tracks--an attack on the music biz called "Joe Fabulous" and the limp "Saving Grace"--recall the band's worst work of the mid-1980s. - amazon.com MULTIUPLOAD

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Snakebite & Snakebite 2 (2009)

Cobra Records was founded in 1956 by Eli Toscano a record shop owner in Chicago, sensibly he left all the creative decisions to his in house producer and writer WillieDixon who had just left Chess Records. Dixon then signed the three best second generation performers of the Chicago blues. Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Magic Sam. He wrote them some great songs and encouraged them to develop the single note guitar leads that distinguished their style. The result is some of the finest Chicago Blues ever recorded presented here on this 2 + 2 CD set. TRACKS & LINKS

TED HAWKINS

Overseas, he was a genuine hero, performing to thousands. But on his L.A. hometurf, sand-blown Venice Beach served as Ted Hawkins's makeshift stage. He'd deliver his magnificent melange of soul, blues, folk, gospel, and a touch of country all by his lonesome, with only an acoustic guitar for company. Passersby would pause to marvel at Hawkins's melismatic vocals, dropping a few coins or a greenback into his tip jar on the way by. That was the way Ted Hawkins kept body and soul together until 1994, when DGC/Geffen Records issued The Next Hundred Years, his breakthrough album. Suddenly, Hawkins was poised on the precipice of stardom. And then, just after Christmas that same year, in a bout of cruel irony, he died of a stroke. Ted Hawkins's existence was no day in the park. Born into abject poverty in Mississippi, an abused and illiterate child, Hawkins was sent to reform school when he was 12 years old. He encountered his first musical inspiration there from New Orleans pianist Professor Longhair, whose visit to the school moved the lad to perform in a talent show. But it wasn't enough to keep him out of trouble. At age 15, he stole a leather jacket and spent three years at Mississippi's infamous state penitentiary at Parchman Farm.

Roaming from Chicago to Philadelphia to Buffalo after his release, Hawkins left the frigid weather behind in 1966, purchasing a one-way ticket to L.A. Suddenly, music beckoned; he bought a guitar and set out to locate the ex-manager of Sam Cooke (one of his idols). No such luck, but he did manage to cut his debut 45, the soul-steeped "Baby"/"Whole Lot Of Women," for "Money Records." When he learned no royalties were forthcoming from its sales, Hawkins despaired of ever making a living at his music and took to playing on the streets. Fortunately, producer Bruce Bromberg was interested in Hawkins's welfare, recording his delightfully original material in 1971 both with guitarist Phillip Walker's band ("Sweet Baby" was issued as a single on the Joliet label) and in a solo acoustic format (with Ted's wife Elizabeth occasionally adding harmonies). The producer lost touch with Hawkins for a while after recording him, Hawkins falling afoul of the law once again. In 1982, those tapes finally emerged on Rounder as Watch Your Step, and Hawkins began to receive some acclaim (Rolling Stone gave it a five-star review). Bromberg corralled him again for the 1986 encore album Happy Hour, which contained the touching "Cold & Bitter Tears." At the behest of a British deejay, Hawkins moved to England in 1986 and was treated like a star for four years, performing in Great Britain, Ireland, France, even Japan. But when he came home, he was faced with the same old situation. Once again, he set up his tip jar on the beach, donned the black leather glove he wore on his fretting hand, and played for passersby -- until DGC ever so briefly propelled him into the major leagues. Ted Hawkins was a unique talent, unclassifiable and eminently soulful. For a year or so, he was even a star in his own country. Love You Most of All: More Songs From Venice Beach was issued posthumously in 1998.

ELVIS PRESLEY - Elvis 75 - Good Rockin' Tonight (2009)

Here is a glittering collection fit for a king - in this case, the undisputed, Once and Future King of Rock 'n' Roll. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the birth of Elvis Aaron Presley, Elvis 75 - Good Rockin' Tonight is the definitive retrospective, a remastered Hot 100 of Elvis classics in one beautifully-packaged four-CD boxed set. Spanning the breadth of Presley's monumental, rags-to-riches career, Elvis 75 - Good Rockin' Tonight presents an artist who exploded in the mid-1950s, when he shook up a buttoned-down world with his mold-breaking music, not to mention his sideburns, swiveling hips, flamboyant wardrobe, and raw sexuality. Until his death at 42 in 1977, he would move from rockabilly, rhythm and blues, bluegrass, and rock 'n' roll to country, pop, gospel, and even to light operatic fare to become one of the greatest and most-beloved entertainers the world has ever known. He would also sell several hundred million records. This definitive set has the chart-topping hits, numbers from his movies, deep cuts from various gold and platinum albums, and exciting in-concert performances. Featuring rare photographs and an incisive essay by respected music writer Billy Altman, ELVIS 75 repeatedly demonstrates that, to paraphrase one of his more famous album titles, 50,000,000 Elvis fans - and counting - can't be wrong. - amazon.com MULTIUPLOAD

The band’s original inception dates back to the early 1970’s with the formation of the Hollywood Fats Band, led by the brilliant, first-rate guitarist Michael “Hollywood Fats” Mann. Their one and only album, the self-titled “Hollywood Fats Band” released on PBR Records in 1979, laid the blueprint for modern day era West Coast Blues and is widely considered a landmark album of the genre. Following Fats’ premature death in 1986, the band laid dormant until the release of “Mr. Blake’s Blues” on Blue Collar Records in 1997. Released under the banner of Big Al Blake & The Hollywood Fats Band, the recording reunited all four surviving members of the Hollywood Fats Band including Al Blake, Fred Kaplan, Larry Taylor and Richard Innes, along with top-flight guitarists Kid Ramos and Junior Watson. Years later, upon hearing the young emerging guitar virtuoso Kirk “Eli” Fletcher, Blake rechristened the band as The Hollywood Blue Flames and incorporated the blossoming talents of this promising new guitarist. Their 2005 Delta Groove debut “Soul Sanctuary” received unanimous praise and earned a Blues Music Award nomination for Comeback Album of the Year. A sophomore release, “Road To Rio,” soon followed, surpassing critics and fan expectations alike as the band delivered another solid effort, only this time with the inclusion of a bonus disc containing previously unheard live performances of the original Hollywood Fats Band.... - fullmoonblues.com HERE

Sarah Jane Morris is a pop music, jazz, rock and R&B singer and songwriter. ‘Where It Hurts" is an intimate and very personal statement (it charts the period of Sarah Jane’s divorce from her musician husband after 22 years), but it’s anything but sentimental, self-pitying or mawkish – as you’d expect from someone whose imagination, empathy and musical agenda have always taken her music way beyond her own four walls... The music of "Where It Hurts" is both an uncompromising picture of Sarah Jane Morris strling in a kind of rebirth, and a broad view of a world that is also hurting, but whose citizens, like her, believe there’s a new life beyond."

NIRVANA - Live At Reading (2009)

Certain concerts create a legend as soon as the final note ceases to ring. Nirvana's headlining appearance at the 1992 Reading Festival is one of these shows, a concert that arrived at precisely the right moment and stands as testament to a band at the peak of its powers...and right before things started to turn sour within the Nirvana camp. Despite the happy news of the birth of Frances Bean Cobain a mere 12 days before this August 30 festival, rumors swirled around Nirvana right up until the band hit the stage. Kurt Cobain took full advantage of these scurrilous stories, making his entrance in a hospital gown and wheelchair pushed by journalist Everett True. Cobain feebly reached for the microphone to croak out the opening lines of "The Rose," only to collapse onto the stage, milking the drama for a moment before leading Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl through a ferocious "Breed." This impish sense of humor has been obscured over the years, lost under the weight of the band's tragic legacy, along with the fact that Nirvana could actually be fun as well as furious. Live at Reading brings all this roaring back. This is Nirvana's purest blast of rock & roll: there's a boundless, invigorating energy here and, just as importantly, there's a sense of joy to the performances, a joy that bubbles to the surface when Kurt laughs during the intro of "Sliver" but can be heard throughout the show, as the band rushes in tandem, pushing the tempos on "Aneurysm" and "Territorial Pissings," ebbing and flowing as one. Hints of this could be heard on the live comp From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, but this is a complete document of Nirvana in full flight and one of the greatest live rock & roll albums ever. - cduniverse.com

NIRVANA'S LEGENDARY NEVER-BEFORE-RELEASED 1992 READING CONCERT Ranked #1 in Kerrang Magazine's "100 Gigs That Shook The World" and voted as "Nirvana's #1 Greatest Moment" by fans in an NME poll, Nirvana's historic August 30, 1992 headlining appearance at the UK's Reading Festival is one of the most bootlegged concerts in the annals of rock n roll. - amazon.com

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usTo commemorate their 40th anniversary, The Allman Brothers Band is releasing a Beacon Box live CD package, capturing all 15 sold-out shows from the group’s March 2009 stand at the venerable Beacon Theatre in New York City. This is the first time the band has made CDs available from their annual visits to New York, which date back to 1989 and includes 188 consecutive sold-out shows at the Beacon. Individual shows will be available as well. Delivery of these legendary concerts has already started and all are expected to be in stock by mid November at www.hittinthenote.com.
This run was dedicated to the memory of Duane Allman, seminal guitarist and founder of the band, and to help celebrate Duane’s legacy, 62 special guests shared the stage with the Allman Brothers Band. The list includes a “Who’s Who” of rock, jazz and jams greats, including Levon Helm, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, Boz Scaggs, Johnny Winter, Sheryl Crow, Widespread Panic’s Jimmy Herring and John Bell, Kid Rock, Billy Gibbons, Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas, Bob Margolin, Phish’s Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell, Chuck Leavell, Jimmy Hall, Susan Tedeschi, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and many others. Also appearing for two nights with the band was the inimitable Eric Clapton, who teamed with Duane Allman to record Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs in 1970, considered by many critics to be the finest guitar album of all time. This marked the first occasion that Clapton had played with the Allman Brothers Band in a public setting.

The fact that the band performed at its considerable best in its 40th year is a remarkable testament to the talents of this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group. All the magic of their timeless classics, newer tunes and spectacular cover songs shines through on the Beacon Box live CD package. The 15 historical shows, containing 100 different songs, will be packaged in a custom-made, hand-crafted, serial numbered box and will have the Beacon Theatre’s marquee silkscreened across the front. In addition to the Beacon concerts, this box set will include a special bonus performance of the Allman Brothers Band at Warren Haynes’ 20th Annual Christmas Jam, which occurred in December of 2008. Also included in the box set edition will be a CD booklet with liner notes, set list and exclusive photos taken during the run by ABB Tour Mystic, Kirk West. Shows are available on an individual basis as well, so take advantage of this once in a lifetime offer to savor a once in a lifetime event. SCOTT H. BIRAM - The Dirty Old One Man Band (2005)

Taking the White Stripes' stripped-down duo approach one step backwards, Austin's Scott H. Biram is, as the title of this album indicates, a one-man show. Sure, there are plenty of solo blues and country players, but none who sound quite as pled-in and driven as he does. His fourth album, and first for insurgent country label Bloodshot, comes after a near fatal car accident all but had him meeting his deceased blues heroes. He survived, and the near-death experience sure hasn't lessened the grinding, stomping, naked blues and country that Biram has been perfecting on his previous releases. If anything, it is now more relentless. The titles of those older albums -- Low-Fi Mojo and Preachin' and Hollerin' -- perfectly describe his unhinged, slightly demonic approach. Take the Legendary Shack Shakers and then add Dexter Romweber singing through his harp mike, and you're on the way to jumping on Biram's turbulent train. This disc mixes a few traditional tunes with originals, but there is nothing conventional about the punked-up style. Mostly electric, Biram unplugs briefly for "Wreck My Car" (not a reference to his own unfortunate events), a folksy but appropriately dark love tale that fits fine with the rest of the album. Even the spiritual tunes such as "I See the Light/What's His Name?" have a tenacious, almost antagonistic quality that makes the religious references secondary to their in-your-face intensity. Imagine ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons starting out in a garage and you have an indication of Biram's gruff, often cartoonish references to whiskey, truck driving, and "Blood, Sweat and Murder." He reprises the riff from "Tequila" in "Whiskey" but never bothers to give a writing credit, and follows it with a typically deranged version of "Muleskinner Blues" complete with fancy guitar picking and yodels that sound like they are emerging from the depths of hell. Two tracks feature the Weary Boys on unadorned accompaniment, adding mandolin and fiddle, but no percussion, to the mayhem. The closing three tracks are recorded on-stage, but that just adds audience participation to what seems like a live in the studio disc. Not for the meek, Biram's hardcore blues and country go down like cheap moonshine from a backwoods still. ~ Hal Horowitz, cduniverse.com HERE

W.C. CLARK - Deep In The Heart (2004) thumbupthumbupthumbup

With this rollicking collection, Austin veteran W.C. Clark again proves that Memphis doesn't have a monopoly on gospel-drenched soul-blues. Meshing Al Green's gospel testifying and Albert King's quicksilver guitar, Clark - a Texas legend in part because of his association-mentorship with a young Stevie Ray Vaughan - skillfully navigates this gutsy R&B terrain with a tough yet tender hand. Fueled by Stax-styled horn arrangements, Clark cranks out jump-blues guitar acrobatics on tracks like Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's signature instrumental "Okie Dokee Stomp." On stunning covers of John Hiatt's slow-boil "Tip of My Tongue," Dan Penn's classic "You Left the Water Running," Joe Tex's "I Want to Do Everything for You," and the Fabulous Thunderbirds' "Twist of the Knife," Clark excels with emotionally electrifying vocals and a dynamic delivery that makes these songs his own.

"Deep In The Heart" is another slice of stunning soul mixed with contemporary electric blues. Clark’s gospel-inflected vocals and inspired, lyrical guitar work dominate the album, which was recorded in Austin and produced by Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff. From wrenching, heartfelt ballads to celebratory, horn-fueled Texas stomps, DEEP IN THE HEART is a blistering ride through sinewy Memphis soul and foot-stomping Texas roadhouse blues. With the addition of friends Marcia Ball and newcomer Ruthie Foster duetting on three songs, "Deep In The Heart" is the most fully realized and soulfully intense album of Clark’s long career. - amazon.com HERE

CREAM - Gold (2005)

Cream Gold is a two disc Cream compilation album, and was released in 2005 to help celebrate the band's reunion at the Royal Albert Hall. Disc 1 consists of twenty-one studio tracks, and Disc 2 consists of eight live tracks. The tracks come from the band's four studio albums: Fresh Cream, Disraeli Gears, Wheels of Fire, and Goodbye, as well as Live Cream and Live Cream Volume II (which were released after the band's break up). - wikipedia

For one thing this Gold series is the best thing that any company has done for classic rock music. 5 stars would not do this justice. For a greatest hits CD this is the best you can get and probably will not get any better now or in the future. - amazon.com

ALICIA KEYS - The Element Of Freedom (2009)

Alicia Keys is back with a new album titled “The Element of Freedom”. After recording her third studio album, "As I Am", Keys began to "find the way to totally be myself and what that meant; figuring out what choices I wanted to make and not make in order to truly honor myself". She described "The Element of Freedom" as diverse, but noted that there is a "balance". She explained that "one side is strong and one side is vulnerable", which she pointed to as the theme of the album. The album has a "strong, edgy feel", but is also "intimate and vulnerable and delicate". While on BET's 106 & Park, she described the album: "The way that the songs progress [on the album] are gonna take you on a natural high. I just want you to feel a sense of freedom, I want you to feel out-of-the-box, feel inspired, You're definitely going to be taken on a trip, I know you're going to be shocked, you're going to hear things that you probably didn't think that I would sound like. Dreamin' Man (Live '92) is the latest release in Neil Young's series of archival live discs. The tracks that make up this newest installment are culled from a series of solo acoustic shows Young performed just before the release of his classic late-career record, Harvest Moon. And while all the songs on Dreamin' Man are the exact ten songs from that record, Young shuffles them up into a different order. And hearing these songs without the lush Nashville sound of the record, especially in the hands of such a compelling solo performer, could make them all feel new again. - prefixmag.com FLAMEUPLOAD or MULTIUPLOAD

DOYLE BRAMHALL II

Doyle Bramhall II was raised in a home filled with the blues and rock and roll sounds that are indigenous to his birthplace - Austin, Texas. His father, Doyle Bramhall Senior, was the drummer for blues legend Lightning Hopkins and a regular collaborator with Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan. When Doyle was 16 years old, he toured as second guitarist with Jimmy Vaughan's band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Shortly thereafter he and fellow Texan, Charlie Sexton, co-founded the rock band Arc Angels. Doyle and Charlie enlisted the rhythm section from Stevie Ray Vaughan's backing band, Double Trouble, to complete the lineup. The group enjoyed critical acclaim and commercial success. Following the release of "Jellycream," Doyle's 1999 RCA debut recording, he received phone calls from both Roger Waters and Eric Clapton. Doyle ended up joining Roger Waters for a summer tour while Clapton, along with fellow blues great B.B. King, chose two of Doyle's songs - "Marry You" and "I Wanna Be" - for their collaborative recording entitled "Riding With The King." Upon completion of the "Riding..." project, Doyle, his wife - Susannah Melvoin, and Clapton co-wrote and performed "Superman Inside" for Clapton's album, "Reptile." Doyle's playing is also heavily featured on the album. The latest offering from Doyle Bramhall II, entitled - "Welcome" - is the purest sampling of Doyle's talents to date. Doyle entered the studio with Smokestack, the band he put together a couple of years ago, and co-producers Benmont Tench and Jim Scott to record the 12 - song set. Joining Doyle in Smokestack is J.J. Johnson on drums and bassist Chris Bruce. Susannah Melvoin contributed background vocals, Benmont Tench pulled keyboard duty and Craig Ross played second guitar. The album, "Welcome" showcases the diversity of Bramhall's talent; from his songwriting to his intense, soulful vocals and virtuoso guitar playing. Doyle's gravity explosion can be readily heard on such tracks as the driving "Green Light Girl" and the uptempo "Soul Shaker." His dedication to the blues can be felt on tracks like "Life," "So You Want It To Rain" and "Send Some Love." Doyle and his band are set to open for Eric Clapton on the first leg of a worldwide tour this year. - doylebramhall2nd.com

"United States" marks the first collaboration between RACER X s Paul "United States" is the first collaboration of Paul Gilbert and Freddie Nelson. The album features 10 new songs which they wrote, performed, and produced together in the summer of 2008. Gilbert and Nelson share many musical and cultural roots. Both artists grew up outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Both were born the same year and started playing guitar around the same time. Both played in Pittsburgh bands, and even shared some of the same band members. Gilbert moved to Los Angeles, and Nelson stayed in Pittsburgh, so they never met until now. On first listen, Nelson s stunning vocals reminds many listeners of the legendary Freddie Mercury. But listen again, and you will be introduced to a singer, performer, and writer with a unique sound and character all his own. Gilbert could easily rest on his "Guitar Hero" reputation, but being raised on The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and Van Halen, Gilbert craves great rock singing and songs. Paul Gilbert began his career with the legendary shred-metal band RACER X in 1986. Since then, his guitar playing has brought him number one hits with the band MR. BIG, and a devoted following of guitar and music lovers all over the world. Gilbert's recent foray into instrumental guitar music brought him even more attention, and has resulted in extensive touring with Joe Satriani's "G3" tour in North America and over 100 shows as a headliner in Europe, Japan, and South America. - amazon.com

Not of This Earth was the first studio release from guitar wizard Joe Satriani (not counting the hard-to-find Joe Satriani EP). This all-instrumental album was making ripples in the guitar-playing community not long after it was released, and it's easy to see why: superior compositions, a signature style, a unique tone, and playing that's out of this world. Satriani shifts musical gears deftly, often layering multiple tracks together to make a complex soundscape. The fiery sound of "Not of This Earth" and "Hordes of Locusts" is tempered by the cool, dark tone of "Driving at Night," the far-out Eastern approach of "The Snake," and the quiet, thoughtful "Rubina." Satriani's fluid playing and wicked licks are enough to drop jaws and widen eyes. There isn't a weak track on this disc, even though the guitarist was still maturing when he released it. - All Music Guide

David Knopfler was a founding member of Dire Straits, playing rhythm guitar behind his big brother Mark, but he left the band in 1980 in favor of pursuing a solo career. Between 1983 and 2006, Knopfler released 10 solo albums, not counting his soundtrack work, and the most memorable moments from those releases are collected here. Knopfler's gruff, smoky voice is strikingly similar to his brother's, and his music strikes a balance between rootsy rock and clean, jazzy touches, so fans of Dire Straits shouldn't feel too far afield here. - cduniverse.com HERE

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD - Thirty Years Of Funk 1969-1999: The Anthology (1999)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Thirty Years of Funk is a three-CD boxed set anthology of the music of one of America's premier heavy rock bands, Grand Funk Railroad. This set covers the music of the band from 1969, when the band first burst onto the music scene and ushered in a post-British Invasion alternative to the progressive movement, until they broke up in 1976 to subsequently reform in the mid-'90s. Although Grand Funk Railroad was officially formed in 1969, some band members played together as Terry Knight & the Pack in the mid-'60s and this set opens with three songs from the Pack from 1968. The set concentrates on being a complete anthology of Grand Funk material with only two to three songs from each one of the band's 16 studio albums. All of the band's albums are represented in this collection except for one album that was released on the Warner Bros. label in 1983. The set also contains a number of previously unreleased alternate recordings, outtakes, and live material to add appeal to fans. In 1997, Grand Funk performed a concert for Bosnia and in 1998 got together in the studio and for a tour and recorded a number of new tracks, three of which are contained on this set. Although a number of the band's early songs and some fans' best-of tracks are not contained on this set, thus making it flawed according to fans, it is the best retrospective package of Grand Funk Railroad's music available to date on the market. The set's booklet contains detailed information on the history of the band, a discography, album jacket photos, and detailed song information. ~ All Music Guide HERE

ROY ORBISON - Greatest Hits (2009)

Roy Kelton Orbison (1936 – 1988) was an American singer-songwriter and musician, well known for his distinctive, powerful voice, complex compositions, and dark emotional ballads. Orbison grew up in Texas and began singing in a rockabilly / country & western band in high school until he was signed by Sun Records in Memphis. His greatest success was with Monument Records in the early 1960s where 22 of his songs placed on the Top Forty, including "Only the Lonely", "Crying", "In Dreams", and "Oh, Pretty Woman". His career stagnated through the 1970s, but several covers of his songs and the use of one in a film by David Lynch revived his career in the 1980s. He joined the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne and released an album in 1988. He died of a heart attack at the age of 52, at the zenith of his resurgence. - wikipedia HERE

SHERYL CROW - Sheryl Crow [Special Edition] (1996/97)

"Sheryl Crow" is the second album by American singer Sheryl Crow, released in 1996. Reaching #6 on the Billboard 200 and #5 on the UK Album Chart, Sheryl Crow has sold 2.9 million units in the US as of January 2008 and is certified 3x platinum. As of February 2008, it has sold 880,344 copies in the UK. The song "Love Is a Good Thing" contains the lyrics "Watch out sister, watch out brother, watch our children while they kill each other with a gun they bought at Wal-Mart discount stores" (in criticism of Wal-Mart's gun sales policy). For this reason, sales of the album were banned at Wal-Mart stores.

The Special Edition of the album contained the European/Australian CD (1997) as well as a bonus CD containing six songs recorded live at Shepherd's Bush Empire in London on the 26th of November 1996. HERE
