VAN MORRISON & LINDA GAIL LEWIS - You Win Again (2000) thumbup

Van Morrison has always been eccentric, but as he grows older, he seems to get more comfortable with his eccentricities and doesn't strain as hard to be distinctive. That's why it seems natural to have two albums in one year be as willfully individual as The Skiffle Sessions and You Win Again, a duet album with Linda Gail Lewis. In all honesty, in 2000, nobody but Jerry Lee Lewis fanatics really remembered that his sister Linda Gail is a talent in her own right, but Morrison had a soft spot for her and decided to record a full album with her. It's a modest affair, sporting only one Morrison original ("No Way Pedro") and relying heavily on Jerry Lee's catalog, opening with four songs inextricably associated with his Sun recordings. But, if this is a tribute album, it's only because this music is in the same spirit as those great recordings. Not everything here is associated with Jerry Lee, but Linda Gail's piano is reminiscent of her sibling, and both she and Morrison have the same fearless spirit as the Killer, easily making these songs fit their voices and blur the distinctions between R&B, blues, country, and rock & roll. Best of all, this is never a conscious decision; they're just pounding out a bunch of songs they love. You Win Again sounds like it was knocked off in one afternoon by a bar band that knows each other so well, they can anticipate each other's next move. It wasn't, of course, but that's the highest compliment it can be paid. No, it's not a major work in Van's catalog, but it's hard not to smile when listening to it, just like The Skiffle Sessions. It's a roots effort that never sounds studied - just easy, welcoming, and thoroughly enjoyable. ~ All Music Guide HERE

VARIOUS ARTISTS - The Village: A Celebration Of The Music Of Greenwich Village (2009)

429 Records has brought together a stellar roster of artists for a project titled "THE VILLAGE: A CELEBRATION OF THE MUSIC OF GREENWICH VILLAGE"--a musical homage to an influential scene that thrived during an incomparable era in the history of rock music. The Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City in the 1960's was ground zero for a musical, political and social evolution-- McCarthy and the Red Scare erawas over, the Vietnam War was simmering and poised to explode, and the civil rights movement was gaining steam just as singers like Peter Seeger, Bob Dylan and Odetta were hanging out and composing fierce and fearless songs that reflected the social conscience of a generation. The neighborhood was symbolic of a shared inspiration with artists worldwide gravitating to the vibrant streets and clubs and as such helped change the course of popular music. With THE VILLAGE, modern day artists look back and pay tribute to the artists and songs that helped nurture and shape them as successful musicians in their own right. Shelby Lynne gives a musical shout out to Dylan with her version of "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," Cowboy Junkies perform their heartbreaking version of Tim Buckley's "Once I Was" and Bruce Hornsby checks in with a stunning version of The Lovin' Spoonful's "Darlin' Be Home Soon." - amazon.com HERE

JUDEE SILL

A singer/songwriter with deeply religious overtones and a penchant for the occult, Judee Sill is one of rock's more interesting and lesser-known stories. The daughter of old Hollywood money, Sill's father died when she was just a child, and her brother died in a car crash soon after, leading to a bleak outlook on life that she expressed in an arty, disaffected attitude. She disliked her stepfather and condemned her mother for remarrying; as a quiet form of vengeance, Sill set out to travel America and live a rambling lifestyle. She had been interested in playing music although was seemingly not serious about it until she began her travels, playing small coffee houses and dives for fun. She and her friends had always been into drugs for recreational and exploratory use, but as Sill stayed out on the road she began using heroin regularly, eventually developing a hundred-fifty-dollar-a-day habit. It was rumored (partly by Sill herself, although never confirmed) that she at one time had to prostitute herself in order to support her addiction. In the late '60s Sill was busted for heroin possession and served three months in prison, during which time she was able to kick her habit; when she returned to the world at large, she focused solely on making music. She returned to Los Angeles where, through her Hollywood connections, she was introduced to David Geffen. Geffen was in the process of creating Asylum Records, which was to focus exclusively on non-rock material. Taken by Sill's abilities as a writer and performer, Geffen immediately signed her to Asylum; her self-titled debut was also the first official release for the new label. It was through Geffen that she met Graham Nash, who quickly became a fan, and produced the first single for her album, "Jesus Was a Cross Maker." The rest of Judee Sill was orchestrated and produced by Bob Harris, Sill's ex-husband. Judee Sill was released in 1971 to immediate acclaim. Lushly orchestrated, the album featured Sill's voice in multiple overdubs, often in a four-part chorale or fugue. The album fit in well with the light rock/folk-rock underpinnings of what came to be known as the "Laurel Canyon sound" associated with other female singer/songwriters such as Carole King and Joni Mitchell (Mitchell, also signed to Asylum, was at work on Ladies of the Canyon at the time, which was also produced by Bob Harris). A tour as the opening act for Nash and David Crosby exposed her intimate songwriting and skillful guitar playing to a larger audience, but her record failed to make much of an impact, despite the somewhat heavy airplay of "Jesus Was a Cross Maker." A self-professed perfectionist, one song could often take her a year to write, and it wasn't until late 1972 that Sill returned to record and release her second and last album, Heart Food. It too received enthusiastic reviews but did poorly commercially. Sill took over the chores of both orchestrating and arranging Heart Food, with the production relying more heavily on multilayered strings and lush expanse. Unable to draw a sizable crowd yet unwilling to play as a support act, Sill's name and moderate fame both receded, and she disappeared from view entirely. Rumors abound as to what happened next, although it is definitely known that she returned to her heroin addiction as well as becoming heavily involved with cocaine. Graham Nash has said that he learned as early as 1974 that Sill had died of an overdose, a claim that would later prove to be incorrect, but considering how closely the two had worked only a few years earlier it does illustrate just how completely Sill had dropped out by this time. She never managed a second return from the abyss and Judee Sill, age 35, died of a drug overdose in November of 1979.

1971 - Judee Sill
Judee Sill is the eponymous debut album by the American singer-songwriter and musician Judee Sill. It was the first album released on David Geffen's Asylum label in 1971. Backing musicians include John Beck and Jim Pons from The Leaves. While the majority of the album was produced by Henry Lewy, Graham Nash handled the duties for the single "Jesus was a Crossmaker," with his production designed to aim for radio airplay.

1973 - Heart Food
The second album Judee Sill made proved to be her last. This brief though enjoyable outing took its toll on Sill - a notoriously slow songwriter - during its making, turning her back to her recently kicked heroin addiction and away from the desire to create more music. Instead of using an outside arranger for the strings (as she did on her previous album), Sill did all of the work herself. Her lack of formal training and the immense amount of orchestral overdubs certainly would have made such an outing a hardship for anyone. The album doesn't suffer much from its sometimes syrupy exterior, though -- the songs are almost as strong as any of those from her debut. To wit, Heart Food suffers only in comparison to its predecessor; otherwise, it's a stellar example of the kind of singer/songwriter fare the music industry was mining in the early '70s. The supporting cast of top L.A. studio musicians solidifies Sill's unique brand of country-flavored pop, which moves from introspective meanderings to loping rock, often within a single song. - All Music Guide

GLENN PATRIK - Nuthin' But A Thang! (2009)

Over 40 years after performing his very first show at age eight for a crowd of 3,000 people in his hometown of Kansas City, Kansas - singer, songwriter and guitarist Glenn Patrik brings a lifetime of strle and soul, joy and pain and hard-driving blues playing to his long awaited second CD, Nuthin' But A Thang!

“In the neighborhood I grew up in,” he tells, “everyone played soul and blues, and I was exposed, starting at about age six to live shows and recordings by Freddy King, Albert Collins as well as Archie Bell & The Drells and Count Basie. I can feel Mozart right along with Nat Cole, Django Rheinhardt along with some George Clinton. Then, throw in some Hound Dog Taylor, Aaron Neville, The Carter Family with Too Live Crew and Hendrix. Add the influence of K.C. blues guitar legend Leon Estelle and you get a feel of where I come from.”

Patrik got the name of his debut recording, Mr. Blues Jr., indirectly from Estelle on “Mr. Blues Day,” when the city of Kansas City paid homage to him. Estelle was Patrik’s mentor and always told everyone that Patrik was his son. So when someone pulled the younger musician up on stage for the presentation, Grace Harris, aka Amazing Grace, owner of Harris Barbecue, introduced Patrik as “Mr. Blues Jr.” This episode reflects the intense professional connection Patrik has had his whole life with legends of the blues we’ve all heard of (Luther Allison, John Primer, Lefty Dizz) and others who were strictly K.C. heroes. Over the years, his resume as vocalist, guitarist and arranger grew to include working with Little Hatch & the Houserockers, Ray Drew, Chick Willis, Abb Locke, Anetta “Cotton Candy” Washington, Millage Gilbert, Valerie Wellington, Lefty Dizz, George Baze and Joe Houston; he also spent a year on the road with the great jazz vocalist Kevin Mahogany.

Since launching his blues odyssey well before the age of 21, hitchiking and hopping trains from Kansas City, Kansas’ massive railroad switching yard to all points north, south, east and west, in search of musicians that he had only heard of, Patrik says, “I’ve spent the last thirty somethin’ years tryin’ to show up early, look sharp, and deliver the guitar/vocal sound that the boss was lookin’ for.” Now, with a heavy tour schedule and the release of Mr. Blues, Jr., he’s the boss, making sounds that carry on the legacy of the greats he learned from. JOHN PRIMER - Knocking At Your Door (2000)

By any yardstick, Chicago guitarist John Primer has paid his dues. Prior to making The Real Deal for Mike Vernon's Atlantic-distributed Code Blue label, Primer spent 13 years as the ever-reliable rhythm guitarist with Magic Slim & the Teardrops. Before that, he filled the same role behind Chicago immortals Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. All that grounding has paid off handsomely for Primer. His sound is rooted in the classic Windy City blues sound of decades past: rough-edged and uncompromising and satisfying in the extreme. He's one of the last real traditionalists in town. By the time he came to Chicago in 1963, Primer was thoroughly familiar with the lowdown sounds of Waters, Wolf, Jimmy Reed, B.B. and Albert King, and Elmore James. He fronted a West Side outfit for a while called the Maintainers, dishing out a mix of soul and blues, before joining the house band at the South side blues mecca Theresa's Lounge for what ended up a nine-year run. Elegant guitarist Sammy Lawhorn proved quite influential on Primer's maturing guitar approach during this period. Always on the lookout for aspiring talent, Willie Dixon spirited him away for a 1979 gig in Mexico City. After a year or so as one of Dixon's All-Stars, Primer was recruited to join the last band of Muddy Waters, playing with the Chicago blues king until his 1983 death. Right after that, Primer joined forces with Magic Slim; their styles interlocked so seamlessly that their partnership seemed like an eternal bond. But Primer deserved his own share of the spotlight. In 1993, Michael Frank's Chicago-based Earwig logo issued Primer's debut domestic disc, Stuff You Got to Watch. It was a glorious return to the classic '50s Chicago sound, powered by Primer's uncommonly concise guitar work and gruff, no-nonsense vocals. With the 1995 emergence of The Real Deal -- produced by Vernon and featuring all-star backing by harpist Billy Branch, pianist David Maxwell, and bassist Johnny B. Gayden, Primer's star appeared ready to ascend. He soon transferred back to the Wolf label for sets such as 1997's Cold Blooded Blues Man, 1998's Blues Behind Closed Doors, and 2000's It's a Blues Life.

ROY HARPER - Lifemask (1973)

Lifemask was an emotional if not musical rebirth for Roy Harper, who nearly lost his life in 1972 due to a rare congenital circulatory disorder. When the album was released in early 1973, it showed Harper refining the acoustic music he had perfected on 1971's Stormcock. Some of the songs on the album previously appeared in a motion picture entitled Made, but the sound is nonetheless consistent throughout. "Highway Blues" and "South Africa" are the best-known songs on this set, and have remained concert mainstays for many years. The former is a strong opener and added a touch of synthesizer to Harper's instrumental stable, while the latter was a political comment on apartheid in the guise of a touching love song. "Little Lady" and "Bank of the Dead" (featuring Jimmy Page) are fairly similar in sound and context, but remain pleasant, if not classic, cuts anyway. The album-closing "The Lord's Prayer" is quite possibly the most confounding piece in Harper's catalog. It has all the benchmarks of one of his classics -- epic, album-side length, poetically obscure lyrics, many musical movements, and, as usual, guitar help from Jimmy Page. However, despite its potential, the song's a bit boring and doesn't approach Harper's former or future epics in terms of listenability. Despite that, Lifemask remains a strong album from Harper's progressive folk period, even if it is a notch below its predecessor, Stormcock. - All Music Guide

GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS - Greatest Hits: 30 Years Of Rock (2004)

If George Thorogood did not exist, it would be necessary toinvent him. With his Delaware Destroyers by his side, Thorogood spent the 1970s, '80s, and '90s cutting through all pretense and pomposity with a raw, rootsy, bare-bones style steeped in traditional blues, R&B, and early rock & roll. His gravelly vocals, power-tool slide guitar, and no-frills bar-band aesthetic have endeared him to fans of honest, good-timemusic for decades, as documented on this hits package. 30 YEARS OF ROCK is like a walk through through American musical history, as Thorogood makes his way through the songs ofsuch roots legends as Hank Williams (a rocked-up version of"Move It on Over", a proto-rockabilly song to begin with), Elmore James (the blistering slow blues "The Sky Is Crying",predating Stevie Ray Vaughan's version), Bo Diddley (a tough, pounding "Who Do You Love?"), and more. Thorogood's own songs are on offer as well, most notably the Muddy Waters-like jukebox staple "Bad to the Bone" and the humorous "I DrinkAlone". Georgia-born R&B/jazz singer Randy Crawford and keyboardist Joe Sample go back a long way. Sample played on The Crusaders' huge 1979 hit, Street Life, which featured an extraordinary vocal by Crawford – check out the excellent YouTube footage, complete with Sample's frilly shirt! Although Crawford's early run of subsequent solo hits (Rainy Night In Georgia, You Might Need Somebody, etc) wasn't sustained, and she's had a fairly low profile in recent years, the UK's Shola Ama enjoyed success with a more or less copycat version of You Might Need Somebody in 1997. In 2006, Crawford and Sample made their first joint album, Feeling Good, which he claims was the first time her voice had ever got the stripped-down setting it really deserved. No Regrets continues that approach with the same small ensemble on a selection of carefully chosen, lovingly crafted standards, plus a few less familiar numbers. There's great, unobtrusive backing by Steve Gadd (drums) and Christian McBride (bass), the occasional tasty touch of guitar and brass, and intuitive piano accompaniment by Sample. Crawford’s voice has deepened and mellowed over the years and she doesn't go in for the vocal gymnastics she once did, but her tremulous phrasing is as distinctive and appealing as ever.

KRIS KRISTOFFERSON - Closer To The Bone (2009) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Kristofferson—one of the greatest songwriters country music has known—has never been the strongest singer, even in his prime, but here he sounds every day of his 73 years. Still, while he may not be a good singer, he is certainly a great one, able to make the listener feel what he’s feeling–a skill worth more than a pretty-but-soulless voice any day of the week. Kris Kristofferson returns to the essentials of his finely honed craft on his new album "Closer To The Bone". Like the master singer-songwriter s 2006 New West bow "This Old Road", this album is produced by Grammy Award winner Don Was. The previous collection was hailed by critics as one of the finest albums of his storied career (Rolling Stone), a stripped-down stunner (Esquire), and a return to his best work (Q). Kristofferson says of the new album, I like the intimacy of the new album. It has a general mood of reflecting on where we all are at this end of life. Closer To The Bone is a deftly observed, honestly executed work about love, separation, loss, and mortality. The subject matter ranges from the musician s family ( From Here to Forever, The Wonder ) to Kristofferson s late friend Johnny Cash ( Good Morning John ). Deluxe 2CD Limited Edition contains Live From The Olympia Theatre (Dublin, Ireland 3/21/08). A selection of 8 songs recorded live on the second night of a 3 night, sold-out stand at the legendary concert hall. HERE

MARIA MULDAUR - I'm A Woman: 30 Years Of Maria Muldaur (2004)

It would be easy for different sets of fans to remember Maria Muldaur from different places and times. For folk fans, she started out as Maria D'Amato, a singer who belted out "I'm a Woman" and other saucy favorites for the Jim Kweskin Jug Band in the mid-'60s. For pop fans, Muldaur was the singer of the risqué "Midnight at the Oasis," a big hit in 1973. But the two singers can be put together by two words: saucy and risqué. This isn't to sest that Muldaur couldn't sing pretty love songs like "Louisiana Love Call" or folksy country songs like "My Tennessee Mountain Home" - only that she made her rep singing about giving "you the shivering fits" in "I'm a Woman" and slipping off to a sand dune in "Oasis." Taking a cursory glance at the 19 selections on 30 Years of Maria Muldaur does little to disavow that rep. There are lively versions of "It Ain't the Meat (It's the Motion)," "Don't You Make Me High (Don't You Feel My Leg)," and "Me and My Chauffeur Blues." It would be a shame, though, if listeners allowed all of this sex appeal to obscure what a fine singer Muldaur is, or to shadow how well she handles the blues and old jazz. There's a lovely version of "Rockin' Chair," on which she's backed by saxophonist Benny Carter, and a nice, bluesy take on "It Feels Like Rain." While 30 Years leans toward Muldaur's work from the early '70s onward, all of her fans will enjoy a retrospective of a long, productive career. ~ All Music Guide

THE SWEET

The Sweet is a British rock band that rose to prominence as one of the main glam rock acts in the 1970s, with the original line-up consisting of Brian Connolly, Steve Priest, Frank Torpey, and Mick Tucker. Torpey was later replaced by Mick Stewart and then by Andy Scott in August 1970. During the early years of 1971 and 1972, Sweet's musical style followed a marked progression from the Archies-like bubblegum style of the first hit, "Funny Funny", to a Who-influenced heavy rock style supplemented by a striking use of high-pitched backing vocals. The band achieved notable success in the UK charts, with thirteen Top 20 hits during the 1970s alone, five reaching number 2 and one, "Block Buster!", reaching number 1. Sweet membership has undergone a number of changes, and during different periods Scott, Connolly and Priest also each formed their own "Sweet", resulting in the separate bands Steve Priest's Sweet, Andy Scott's Sweet and BC Sweet. Connolly died in 1997, and Tucker in 2002.

SARAH JANE MORRIS - After All These Years (2006)

"Leave your preconceptions at home", begins one London critic's assessment of sensual singer-songwriter S.J. Morris, who straddles rock, blues, jazz and soul with a goosebump-raising four octave range that rumbles from the heels of her size eight shoes to the tips of her flame-red mane. Famed for her association with The Communards in the mid-80s and infamous for a banned rendition of the classic Me and Mrs Jones, Sarah has always attracted as much attention for her politics as for her soul-driven, seismic voice. Nine solo albums later, pop stardom on the continent, and a diverse set of musical collaborations on record, film and stage, Morris continues to steer her unorthodox career to greater heights.

Sarah Jane celebrated her 25-year career with the release of a double-CD, "After All These Years". This 34-track compilation, which went Top 40 in Europe, includes acoustic sessions, dance remixes and live performances that showcase the true spirit and energy of this charismatic, uncompromising performer. The CD traces Sarah Jane's career from her early days with political bands The Republic and The Happy End, to chart success, solo singles and unreleased live tracks, and contains a new bossa nova version of her cult hit Me and Mrs Jones. To celebrate her hit with The Communards, Sarah Jane released a new rendition of Don't Leave Me This Way at the end of 2006, twenty years after it hit #1 in Britain and became the best selling single of the year. "The Essential Coco Montoya" presents tracks from the guitarist's initial solo recordings released by Blind Pig in the mid-90's. Montoya, who honed his signature chops as a protégé of modern blues forefathers Albert Collins and John Mayall, personally selected the tracks for this compilation. They document his post-Bluesbreakers entry into the limelight and the beginning of a still running ascendency in the Blues-Rock realm. These recordings, now a decade old, evoke a highly creative place and time in this world-class guitarist's career as he came into his own. - amazon.com

EDDIE C. CAMPBELL - Tear This World Up (2009)

After 10 years, Eddie C. gets another shot and makes the most of it. With fun lyrics, soulful grooves and the Westside guitar style he has played for 50 years, this one is a winner. There are a few tunes here played by Magic Sam done Eddie C. style which sound great. I enjoyed the whole CD and you probably will too if you like electric blues music. This man is a master of his style and let's hope it's not another 10 years before he gets back in the studio. Our senior blues leaders are leaving us as the years go by and now is the time to capture their classic sound. This CD is recommended and also check out Eddie's other music! - amazon.com

SEAN CHAMBERS - Ten Til Midnight (2009)

The former musical director for Hubert Sumlin, blues guitarist and singer Sean Chambers' third CD, Ten Til Midnight, showcases the powerful style which earned him critical plaudits from a host of magazines, including Europe's Guitarist Magazine, which listed Sean as 'one of the Top 50 Blues Guitarists of the last century.' On Ten Til Midnight, Sean Chambers and co-producer Tim Blair wanted to go for a live sound similar to their incendiary concert shows; so most of the tracks were recorded with few overdubs. Sean's aggressive, yet fluid blues guitar approach is evident throughout the seven originals, as well as covers of songs from ZZ Top (Brown Sugar), Luther Allison (All the King's Horses) and Eddie 'Guitar Slim' Jones (You're Gonna Miss Me). It's that combination of reverence for tradition along with his special jolt of energy that makes his sound so unique.

ORIANTHI

At 24 years old, Orianthi has already experienced what most aspiring musicians only dream of. She's opened for her hero (STEVE VAI), backed an Idol (CARRIE UNDERWOOD), traded solos with a legend (CARLOS SANTANA) and shared the stage with the King of Pop (MICHAEL JACKSON). What's left to conquer? The world stage, for one, and this guitar wunderkind has her sights clearly set on the road ahead. After a performance with CARRIE UNDERWOOD on stage at the 2009 Grammy Awards the blogosphere was buzzing with news of this little-known guitar prodigy. It prompted MICHAEL JACKSON to call with an offer for her to be his guitarist for his dates at the O2 Arena in London. When offered the gig in MICHAEL JACKSON'S live band, Orianthi joined a prestigious line of guitar players including EDDIE VAN HALEN, SANTANA, SLASH, STEVE STEVANS, JENNIFER BATTEN and LARRY CARLTON. Sadly the tour was not to be and music lost an icon. "Working with Michael was a life-changing experience," Orianthi reflects, "One I will never forget." Her story starts in Adelaide on the southern tip of Australia where, at the age of six, Orianthi began taking an interest in her dad's record collection. "Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Cream, Santana. he was into guitar players that are real songwriters," she boasts. Growing up in the 80s, a decade remembered for its many guitar greats, Orianthi also listened to a lot of Whitesnake, Van Halen and Def Leppard. Her father, who used to be a player in a Greek band, also kept plenty of instruments around the house, and it didn't take long before Orianthi strummed her first chord. Mastering the six-string came naturally. "When I was 11, Carlos Santana came to play Adelaide and that show really affected me," she recounts. "I begged my dad to get me a second hand electric guitar so I could be like Carlos, and that was it, no more acoustic. After that, I would buy all of Carlos' videos - on VHS! - which I kept rewinding to try and learn his solos. I totally wore out the tapes." Some seven years later when Carlos Santana passed through Adelaide again, Carlos' brother arranged a sound-check meeting between the guitar god and his young disciple after hearing some of her music. A sound check jam evolved into an invitation to join him on stage where Orianthi played for about 35 minutes and took a solo in front of a hometown crowd. Performances, tours and guest appearances with STEVE VAI, ZZ TOP and PRINCE have kept Orianthi busy up to this point. But guitar is far from Orianthi's only means of expression. Before she received the call from the King of Pop, Orianthi had already been hard at work on her upcoming album, Believe, on which she sings, writes and leads her own band. Working with Geffen Records Chairman and A&R veteran Ron Fair and producer Howard Benson (All American Rejects, Daughtry, My Chemical Romance, Three Days Grace) her fierceness of character has made its way to songs that will simply knock the socks off of any boy in the rock star schoolyard. Orianthi packs modern girl-power punch into every turn of phrase, but it's the shredding that takes her brand of rock to an entirely new level. Songs like "Suffocated" and "Think Like A Man" are anthemic rock tracks recalling at time Evanescence, Avril Lavigne, Paramore and even a less-music row more-sunset strip Taylor Swift. First single "According To You" is a catchy tale of an ungrateful boyfriend with a killer guitar solo. The result: a thunderous, hook and riff driven debut that sounds larger than life. If, for a moment, you've thought the music world could use another taste of The Runaways' Joan Jett, let us introduce you to Orianthi. - amazon.com

JOE LOUIS WALKER - Between A Rock And The Blues (2009)

The follow-up to Walker's acclaimed 2008 release, Witness to the Blues, the latest effort from the multiple Grammy™ and Blues Music Award winning guitarist features more of his trademark blend of blues, soul, gospel and R&B with enough six-string flourishes to make any fan of blue guitar squeal with delight. Ten of the album's twelve tracks were produced by Stony Plain Records labelmate Duke Robillard, who also plays his guitar alongside Walker. The band assembled for the album includes noted saxophonist Doug James, keyboardist Bruce Katz, bassist Jesse Williams, and drummer Mark Teixeira as well as harpist Sugar Ray Norcia…quite a crew by any account. Former Tonight Show bandleader Kevin Eubanks brings his underrated guitar talents to a couple of tracks co-written with Walker. Walker's previous release, Witness to the Blues, received universal acclaim, and hit #1 on the Living Blues magazine radio chart. Downbeat magazine's critic's poll picked the album as one of the year's best, while Blues Revue magazine called Walker, "one of contemporary blues’ most dynamic and innovative musicians, releasing consistently exciting music." No less an authority than the Reverend himself, in Blurt magazine, called Walker "a phenomenal guitarist, a singer with a warm, soulful voice, a solid songwriter and a dynamic showman." - blues.about.com HERE

STEVE EARLE, GUY CLARK & TOWNES VAN ZANDT - Together At The Bluebird Cafe (2001)

Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, and Guy Clark had a lot in common as revered Nashville singer/songwriters on the fringes of the country music industry, which made this gig at the famed ~Bluebird Café in Nashville, a benefit for the Interfaith Dental Clinic, an impressive lineup. Recorded September 13, 1995, it was an old-fashioned guitar pull, with each performer alternating as his fellows pitched in with a little guitar playing and encouragement. That's as much as they got together, however; there are no actual duos or trios on the disc. It does seem that Clark is singing along a little bit on Earle's "Mercenary Song," though, and an unidentified voice that sounds a lot like Emmylou Harris applies some harmony on Clark's "Immigrant Song" and Earle's "Copperhead Road." The performances are off the cuff to the point of being more like a casual get-together than an actual concert. Van Zandt, whose songs are the most depressing (and that's saying a lot), is the funniest, especially discussing his own dental needs in the light of losing a tooth in a dice game. He also goes up on the lyrics to "Pancho and Lefty," which doesn't keep it from being as amazing a song as ever. In fact, the songs just seem to get better and better as these three rough-hewn craftsmen demonstrate their remarkable abilities. Those who know their work will delight in hearing favorite songs in an intimate live setting; those who do not may be introduced to a world of great songwriting. - All Music Guide

CHI COLTRANE - The Best Of Chi Coltrane (1988)

01. Thunder and Lightning
02. You Were My Friend
03. Myself to You
04. Go Like Elijah
05. Feeling Good
06. Wheel of Life
07. Who Ever Told You
08. It's Not Easy

11. Fly Away Bluebird
12. I Will Not Dance

Chi combines an accomplished piano style with a soaring rock voice. Her songs can be introspective musings as in "You Were My Friend", "Goodbye John," or energetic celebrations "Thunder and Lightning", "Hallelujah". "I Will Not Dance" is a searing anti- (Vietnam) war protest. I was laughing because Amazon sests you buy this along with the Golden Collection, and were you to do so, you'd get a lot of the same songs. On second thought, though, it's not as crazy as it sounds. There are at least five great songs on the Golden Collection not on this disc: "Time to Come In", "Goodbye John", "The Tree" "Turn Me Around" and "It's Really Come to This". My preference would be for the first and second albums to be rereleased in their entirety, along with Road to Tomorrow, but until then, here's a great collection. - amazon.com

CHI COLTRANE - Yesterday, Today, & Forever - The Best Of 1982-2007 (2009)

Chi Coltrane (Chi is pronounced "shy") is best known as an American rock-pop-jazz songwriter, pianist, and singer. Her best-known song is "Thunder and Lightning," released in January 1972. By November it reached #17 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, #18 on the Canadian RPM magazine charts, and #4 on the German hit list. It drove her first album, "Chi Coltrane", to stay on the charts for three months. The song "Go Like Elijah" also received considerable airplay. Coltrane was one of seven children to a Canadian mother and a German violinist father. She studied a number of instruments as a child. Her family moved frequently; her father died when she was ten. She gave her first piano recital at the age of twelve. In 1970, she formed Chicago Coltrane, playing blues, funk and gospel in local Chicago clubs and bars. In 1971 she represented the U.S. at the International Rock Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She appeared on "The Tonight Show" and "The Midnight Special". After her first album was released, she attended the Salter School of Music in Los Angeles, California between 1973 and 1975, and released the album Let It Ride early in 1974 (on the Columbia label), Greatest Hits and Best Of albums in 1975, and in 1977 another album, Road To Tomorrow. She subsequently moved to Europe (mainly Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, where she was voted Best Female Artist for two consecutive years). She released several albums on the Teldec label during the 1980s, including Silk and Steel (1981), Live! in 1982 (it reached #12 on the European charts), Ready to Roll (1983), and The Message (1986). Golden Classics was released in November 1996 (Collectibles label). She has done TV soundtrack work, and collaborated with Tangerine Dream in 1991. She returned to Los Angeles in 1993, where she started a recording studio and worked with underprivileged groups. In 2008 Coltrane resumed her music career, releasing a new compilation "Yesterday, Today & Forever". The collection featured material from her 1980s albums "Live!", "Ready to Roll", and "The Message". It also contained three new recordings, including the title track which featured a Paul Buckmaster string arrangement. The album was initially made available at her website. Coltrane's return to live performing is scheduled for 2009 with performances in Holland, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. After this tour she will begin work on an album of all-new material. HERE

ERIC BURDON - The Eric Burdon Story (2004)

This Collection features Well Known Titles Such as "San Franciscan Nights", "Tobacco Road", "House of the Rising Sun", We Gotta Get Out of this Place", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "i'm Crying" Along with Some Rare Tracks from an Unreleased Movie. While it's truly a shame that some of the growling blues-rock classics from recordings like Animalism ("Smokestack Lightning" should have been here) are missing, at least "I'm Crying" is here. More important than the Animals material, the later years are given a solid lion's share, without the excessive baggage of the band. This is a positive simply because this anthology showcases just what a stirring, rousing, utterly gifted singer Burdon is, despite his material, whether it's his read of Louisiana Red's "Sweet Blood Call" or the Elmore James classic "It Hurts Me Too," which goes on for over ten minutes. Thankfully, many of the classics are here as well, from "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" to his near-definitive read of J.D. Loudermilk's "Tobacco Road. HERE

In the wake of the stylistic curveball that was LYLE LOVETT & HIS LARGE BAND, the Texas singer/songwriter took the opportunity afforded by his newfound fame to indulge in as many different musical styles as he pleased on JOSHUA JUDGES RUTH (an album title drawn from three books of the Bible, that slyly tips its hat to Lovett's penchant for detailing woman trouble). He combines the progressive country leanings of his first two albums with the jazzy style of his previous album, but along the way he throws in gospel and R&B influences as well. No one can describe heartbreak from a cool, literary distance like Lovett, and "She's Already Made Up Her Mind" and "She's Leaving Me Because She Really Wants To" are breakup songs worthy of minimalist author Raymond Carver. On the lighter side, "Church" is a light-hearted gospel romp that's remains one of Lovett's biggest crowd-pleasers, and "She Makes Me Feel Good" closes the album on the closest thing to an up note that a lovable cynic like Lovett can muster. - cduniverse.com HERE

Stewart is personally passionate about this project, which is a return to his beginnings when he fronted The Jeff Beck Band and the critically-revered band The Faces, iconic in the history books for fusing American roots music - rock, soul and blues. The Great American Soulbook reunites Stewart with his longtime collaborators, producers Steve Tyrell and Steve Jordan, of Rolling Stones/Xpensive Winos fame, who also brought in top musicians Ray Parker Jr., Waddy Watchel, Darrell Jones, Dean Parks and David Paich to join Rod in the studio for the album. With an estimated 250 million in album and single sales to date, Rod Stewart is one of the most successful performers of all time. Possessing one of music's most distinctive voices, Rod's musical project The Great American Songbook series has been a recordbreaking success, selling over 19 million albums and becoming the biggest selling ongoing series of new music recordings in history. In 2006, Stewart released Still the Same, Great Rock Classics of Our Time, his first rock album in over eight years, which entered the charts at #1. He has sold out concerts across the globe and his last 5 studio albums have topped the Billboard charts.

After several delays, Joss Stone is back with her fourth album "Colour Me Free!". Joss wrote and recorded the follow-up to 2007's "Introducing Joss Stone" at Mama Stones (a live music venue owned by her mum), and worked with producers Jonathan Shorten and Conor Reeves. The singer also worked with a number of guest collaborators on the 12 songs, including US rapper Nas, Jeff Beck and Raphael Saadiq. According to Stone, "Colour Me Free!" is a very raw sounding record, as she explains: "I kind of woke up one morning and wanted to make an album. It's very, very raw. It's a bunch of musicians, writers and myself, and we're just jamming, basically." Joss added. "This time, the album was not dictated or forced, it was an organic process where each musician was given the freedom to create their sound. I co-produced this record; it's an honest and accurate representation of where I am as an artist and person right now."

LEONARD COHEN - Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970 (2009)

It was gone two in the morning by the time he finally got on stage after being woken from a nap in his trailer. Out front the mood among the throng – an astonishing 600,000 strong – was a mixture of blissed-out and fired-up after five days of music, ragged sleep and running battles between the organisers and the ‘free festival radicals’ occupying ‘Desolation Row’, the hill overlooking the site. Backstage there were jitters – already that night there had been an onstage fire, a wilful act of arson, during Jimi Hendrix’s slot. Unfazed, Leonard Cohen wandered onstage cool as an English summer. Shaggy, stubbled, tanned, and sporting a tightly belted safari suit (possibly the only time said garment has seemed dashing), he looked more film star than rock icon. At almost 36, he was, Miles Davis aside, the oldest act on a sprawling, stellar bill. Cohen’s subsequent performance was remarkable for its poise, its passion and the way it defused the tension crackling in the air. Before he had even played a note Cohen had seized his moment by reminiscing about his childhood visits to the circus and getting the audience to hold up a lighted match (a gesture yet to descend into cliché) and by singing, ad lib, “It’s good to be here alone in front of 600,000 people”. THE KINKS - Greatest Hits (1991)

The Kinks are a British rock group that came out of the British R&B/ Garage Rock scene of the early 1960s. Formed in 1963 in London, UK, they first gained prominence on the heels of the well-received and highly influential single “You Really Got Me” (1964). The group originally consisted of lead singer/guitarist Ray Davies, his brother lead guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory and bassist Peter Quaife. Quaife left (twice) in the late 1960’s, and Avory finally left due to a long-running dispute with Dave Davies, leaving only the Davies brothers as the core of the original group. With Ray’s splendid songwriting skills and ‘mockney’ vocals, Dave’s impressive guitar work and Avory’s tight and steady drumming, the band became one of the best and most influential groups of British rock and the “British Invasion” of America, lasting longer than any of their competitors, apart from The Rolling Stones, as they broke up in 1996. Their impressive back catalogue of songs have been covered by Van Halen, The Pretenders, The Black Keys, The Stranglers, Queens of the Stone Age.... HERE

JOE BONAMASSA - Live At The Royal Albert Hall (2009) thumbup thumbup thumbup thumbup thumbup

When Joe Bonamassa took the stage at Royal Albert Hall in May 2009, he fulfilled a dream he'd held since first picking up a guitar as a kid in upstate New York. The sold-out concert-fresh off the release of his album The Ballad Of John Henry-marked Bonamassa's headlining debut at arguably the most prestigious concert venue in the world. "May 4, 2009 was a day 20 years in the making," says Bonamassa. "I have never been so honoured in my life. It was truly larger than the sum of its parts." The two decades he's referring to began when-at age 12-he first opened for blues icon B.B. King, who said, "this kid's potential is unbelievable." King's words are as fitting today as they were then. Bonamassa averages 200 shows every year, and with each gig, he comes more into his own as a virtuoso and a vocalist. At the Hall, Bonamassa had the added honor of being joined onstage by the legendary Eric Clapton. The Times cited Joe's " searing excellence and showmanship," and Planet Rock said, "The sight of two of the world's best guitarists trading solos was more than a little thrilling."

This incredible performance-featuring Joe accompanied by an incredible band in addition to a guest appearance by Eric Clapton-will put an end to that. Directed by groundbreaking filmmakers Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen, this concert experience will become the benchmark for the genre. But pigeonhole Bonamassa at your peril-sure, the blues is the anchor, but this virtuoso refuses to play inside the box. Any box. Enjoy!

Showing his softer side, guitar god Yngwie Malmsteen buckles down and offers up a collection of ballads. Nine of the tracks on ANGELS OF LOVE are stripped-down and rearranged versions of previously released material spanning Malmsteen's 25-year solo career. (One song, "Ocean Sonata," is a brand-new composition.) Songs from TRILOGY, ECLIPSE, ODYSSEY, THE SEVENTH SIGN, FACING THE ANIMAL, WAR TO END ALL WARS, and CONCERTO SUITE FOR GUITAR AND ORCHESTRA are all given new acoustic life as the man with lightning fingers also utilizes his electric guitar to fill out the new arrangements. Soulful, delicate, and, at times, romantic, ANGELS OF LOVE displays a side of Yngwie Malmsteen few listeners ever knew. - cduniverse

V.A. - Anchored In Love - A Tribute To June Carter Cash (2007)

Because she rarely recorded under her own name, a tribute to the late June Carter Cash by default also stands as a tribute to her genealogy: several of the songs among the dozen here were recorded by June with her late husband, Johnny Cash, or by country music's legendary Carter Family, from which June sprang. In addition, the album was produced by John Carter Cash, the only child of Johnny and June, and there are tracks by Carlene Carter, June's daughter from her first marriage (to Carl Smith), and Rosanne Cash, Johnny Cash's daughter with his first wife. As producer, John Carter Cash largely plays it predictable. There are few surprises and no truly offbeat rearrangements or radical interpretations. Folks who enjoyed the singing of June Carter Cash will likely be quite satisfied with these loving, faithful covers. And they should be, because virtually all of the performances are flawless, honest, and inspired. Two duets lead things off: Sheryl Crow and duet king Willie Nelson give a spirited, if somewhat rote, reading to "If I Were a Carpenter," the Tim Hardin-penned classic, and Carlene Carter and Ronnie Dunn hoot it up on "Jackson," the Nancy Sinatra-Lee Hazlewood hit -- both songs were longtime staples of Johnny and June's shows together. A handful of top-shelf country artists, among them Loretta Lynn (a tender "Wildwood Flower"), Brad Paisley (a straightforward, beautifully sung "Keep on the Sunny Side"), and bluegrass hero Ralph Stanley ("Will the Circle Be Unbroken," what else?), pay their respects with kind treatments, and Emmylou Harris, who certainly learned a thing of two from June, sends it off in style with "Song to John," June's self-explanatory tribute of her own. It wouldn't be a tribute album if Elvis Costello didn't turn up, and though his "Ring of Fire" will never go down as the definitive version of that Johnny Cash signature, Costello brings his usual commitment -- and an autoharp, June's favorite instrument -- to his no-frills version. Two of the more left-field approaches come via Patty Loveless and Kris Kristofferson, who bring a touch of drollness to "Far Side Banks of Jordan," and Billy Joe Shaver, who's exactly the right guy to give a bit of bite to the Carter Family's "Kneeling Drunkard's Plea." You've got to think that both June and Johnny would have loved this homage, whose release coincides with the publication of John Carter Cash's same-titled biography of his mother. ~ All Music Guide

Joe Henry’s growing reputation as the empathetic, resourceful producer behind some kick-ass R&B comebacks (Solomon Burke, Bettye LaVette) may have overshadowed his unique gifts as a singer-songwriter. The ambitious Blood from the Stars insists you pay attention, and Henry makes it easy with his cinematic arrangements for an assortment of pros including guitarist Marc Ribot and pianist Jason Moran. The presence of “bent horns and bowed banjo,” in Henry’s parlance, lends New Orleans swagger, defiant amid the clouds of ghostly effects that give these songs a dark, fuguelike quality. Lines like “Someone used my mouth and laughed out loud” and “I clawed at your skirt like it was a dirt floor” seep with blues feeling and a soul-bruised air of dislocation, which only deepens the mystery. The album features veteran musicians like guitarist Marc Ribot and pianist Jason Moran. Joe Henry has produced and written with Loudon Wainwright, Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint, Ornette Coleman, Solomon Burke, Madonna, Ani DiFranco, Don Byron, T-Bone Burnett and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. MARC BOLAN & T. REX - Anthology (1991)

This three-disc box set covering 68-77 is a ‘Marc on Wax’ release with Fly-RZ catalogue licensed from Castle. Probably issued to coincide with the re-release of ‘20th Century Boy’ it has all the hallmarks of a rush job. Let’s see what you get; three tightly packed CDs including all the big hits and some nice rarities, a booklet with a rather subjective overview of Marc’s career, good photos though, and a stiff slip case. HERE

DISC 1 - The Early Years

This starts off well with a different from usual track list. The singles are there of course but it all goes wrong when we get to ‘One Inch Rock’. The case gives a P date of 1968 (the single version) but in fact it’s the 1970 cut from ‘T.Rex’. The stereo electric take is quite often substituted for the mono single version (uncredited so beware) on iffy compilations, but giving the wrong info is unforgivable. Otherwise it’s all a bit of a jumble. The running order while different isn’t very engaging, and ceases even to be chronological after track 14. Spelling junkies please note ‘Consuela’ and ‘Saltimbanques’. On the plus side it does include the rare ‘Pewter Suitor’ and the even rarer ‘Oh Baby’.
01. Debora
02. Child Star
03. Knight
04. Consuela
05. Oh Harley (The Saltimbanques)
06. Evenings Of Damask
07. Iscariot

09. Organ Blues
10. Elemental Child
11. Childe
12. Seagull Woman
13. Once Upon The Seas Of Abyssinia
14. Cosmic Dancer
15. Lean Woman Blues
16. Rip Off
17. One Inch Rock
18. Pewtor Suitor
19. Salamanda Palaganda
20. King Of The Rumbling Spires
21. Oh Baby

DISC 2 - The Singles A's & B's
Actually just the big hits, from ‘Ride a White Swan’ to ‘20th Century Boy’, presented chronologically A then B. Sadly, again there are reasons to dislike this disc. First, and almost criminally, ‘Raw Ramp’ is cut up. ‘There was a Time’ and ‘Raw Ramp’ are divorced and ‘Electric Boogie’ amputated. Second, and merely a gross oversight by comparison, the ‘Xmas Jingle’ that precedes the B-side version of ‘Born to Boogie’ is not present, despite a mention in the accompanying booklet. Third, did you know Cochran and Capehart wrote ‘Is It Love’? Fourth, in this format I found it annoying not to have the full studio chat/noise found on the Fly vinyl B-sides. Fifth, there is a much better running order to be had than strictly ABAB etc, ABBA works much better. Still, twenty-two important tracks otherwise not on one album is an achievement.
01. Ride A White Swan
02. Is It Love
03. Summer Time Blues
04. Hot Love
05. Woodland Rock
06. The King Of The Mountain Cometh
07. Get It On

19. Jitterbug Love
20. Sunken Rags
21. Solid Gold Easy Action
22. Born To Boogie
23. 20th Century Boy
24. Free Angel

DISC 3 - From Glam Rock to Fast Punk 1972-1977
No more than a run through of album cuts from 72-77, with a few single-side only tracks tacked on the end for good measure. Again the songs are assembled with no apparent thought for sequencing. The ‘Big Carrot’ track would have been a real bonus here, a good balance to ‘Oh Baby’ on CD-1. It all ends up seeming a bit messy and difficult to know what they were trying to achieve. The only error is ‘Ride My heels’.

SUPER BLACK BLUES

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

Super Black Blues (2001)
This is one of the best urban blues album ever recorded. Not only is the music terrific, but also the reunion of such great musicians as Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Otis Spann, George "Harmonica" Smith and Ernie Watts, for the first and only time, backed by a brilliant rhythm section, including Ron Brown on bass, Arthur Wright on guitar and Paul Humphrey on drums, made this recording one-off. Last but not least, the producer, Bob Thiele, better known for his work with John Coltrane on Impulse. The session took place in New York, on October 17, 1969. Otis Spann, pianist for Muddy Waters before starting his own solo career, passed away a few months later, in April 1970. George "Harmonica" Smith was also the harp player for Muddy Waters before starting to play and record under his own name. There are only 4 long tracks on this recording, 3 of them penned by T-Bone Walker, but over 40 minutes of fresh raw real blues. Put together the Kansas City singing of Joe Turner, the Texas guitar and singing style of T-Bone Walker, the Chicago piano and singing style of Otis Spann, the unique harp sound and playing of George Smith, the honky tenor saxophone of Ernie Watts, and what you get is this terrific vintage recording. Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker share vocals on most of the tracks. - amazon.com

Inspired by the great film noir soundtracks from the '40's and '50's, Setzer set out to create songs that would carry a classic cinematic mood completely missing from today's musical landscape. The result is the 3-time Grammy winner's best orchestra album today, and the first in an illustrious 30-year career where Brian wrote all songs on the album. - amazon.com

Their first studio album in three years, 'By A Thread' finds the Mule, lead guitarist and frontman Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, keyboardist Danny Louis, and bassist Jorgen Carlsson, adding a newfound shot of soul to their classic power-band sound."'By A Thread" was recorded largely in the Texas Hill Country at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studio in 2009, the album's origins are apparent from the first track, "Broke Down On The Brazos," named after the nearby river, with a deep Texas stomp for the backbeat and featuring what Rolling Stone recently called "an incendiary duel with ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons." Perhaps less descriptively named, "Steppin' Lightly" is another burner, set off by the soulful vocals and mind-bending guitar work of Haynes.

V.A. - Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - OST (1978)

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was a multi-platinum double album produced by George Martin, featuring covers of songs by The Beatles and was released in July 1978, as the soundtrack to the film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It starred the Bee Gees, Peter Frampton and Steve Martin. The project was managed by The Robert Stigwood Organisation. In 1975 the original plans for the album were suspended due to a dispute between Columbia and RSO.RSO invested $12million into this soundtrack and the profit offset set against costs such as $1million for promotion. Although the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band debuted at #5 in the US Billboard album charts and stayed there for six weeks, becoming a multi-platinum album, there was reported resistance to the interpretation of The Beatles' songs, such as Martin's comedic take on "Maxwell's Silver Hammer". However Earth Wind & Fire's version of "Got To Get You Into My Life" became a million selling single and Aerosmith's "Come Together" charted in the top 40 and later appeared on the soundtrack for Armageddon. - en.wikipedia.org

Steve Earle is widely known as a tireless political activist who's not afraid to use his music to further the causes for which he fights. In 2004, America was in dire need of forward-looking activism, and Earle responded with THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW. The album was written and recorded quickly in order for Earle to get his two cents in before the Presidential election, and it turned out to be both his most overtly political and most effectively concise offering to date. With a mix of country and straightforward rock & roll, Earle engages in rabble-rousing (the title track), tells the tales of people victimized by the war in Iraq ("Home to Houston," "Rich Man's War"), and lambasts stifling conservative forces on the homefront ("F the CC"). There are a couple of love songs thrown in for good measure, and they're all the more affecting for their marked contrast. THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW seamlessly blends the personal and the political without a trace of mawkishness or didacticism. - cduniverse.com

THE WEBB SISTERS - 2 albums

Born into a family of musicians in Kent, England, Charley and Hattie are The Webb Sisters..... Beguiling, dynamic performers with hugely expressive voices and plangent harmonies, they are highly skilled multi-instrumentalists and songwriters of originality and intelligence. Ingénues yet thinkers, the sisters' youthful energy and musical training combine in adventurous, lyrical and emotionally enthralling performances. Their singing and playing (harp, guitar, mandolin and more) draw from the folk and pop traditions of Britain and the United States. The Webb Sisters have recorded two albums, building a following in the UK and achieving album and record of the week on iTunes and BBC Radio Two. The Webb Sisters represented the UK at America's 400th Anniversary celebrations, contributed songs to several major TV shows (most recently "Cane" on CBS), recorded a new song for a Judy Collins tribute album alongside the likes of Dolly Parton and Rufus Wainwright, and have performed on major concert tours with artists such as Jamie Cullum, James Morrison and Jason Mraz. Currently, The Webb Sisters are honoured to be touring and singing with one of their idols, Leonard Cohen, and are recording their new album with multiple Grammy-winning producer, Peter Asher. HERE

2006 - Daylight Croossing @192
Daylight Crossing, The Webb Sisters' debut album is an utterly charming, melody-led Rumours for the 21st century. Daylight Crossing will be all over the charts soon enough, the girls' gorgeous, cut glass vocals bleeding from radio sets up and down the country. "We were kind of lumped together really," says Charley Webb of why she and her sister, Hattie, decided to make music together. "We never actually chose to sing as a duo; it was almost as if it was chosen for us, somehow." Hattie, the slightly more mystical of the two, thinks it might have had something to do with destiny: "We were never *not* going to be singing together. Charley and I have always had this natural connection. Yes, we're sisters, but there's more to it than that, I think. We've made music with other people along the way, and that's been fine - mostly - but I just think we understand one another better than we do anybody else. We click, and we complement each other perfectly. Charley has always been very good at being part of the system, for example. She was Head Girl at school, she is so self assured… so capable. Me, I'm more firey and impetuous, I guess. And somewhere in all this, we find balance. Balance and harmony. And passion, that too."

2009 - Comes In Twos @320
The Webb Sisters are a musical duo comprising the siblings Charley and Hattie Webb who are based mostly in the United Kingdom. On tour as back up singers with Leonard Cohen, the UK duo of Charley and Hattie Webb are getting much attention these days. They are steeped in the British Folks tradition, and it shows in the 5 track EP. Heavy on vocals, and the use of accoustic instruments lends to a very organic sound.

JOHN CAMPBELL - A Man And His Blues (1994) thumbup

Had you gone looking for the blues at the 1986 Mississippi Delta Blues Festival, you might have been surprised to find that one of the most popular performers was a rather unknown guitar player from Texas, John Campbell . . . A few year ago, John Campbell moved to New York City, doing opening shows for Hubert Sumlin, Jimmie Rogers, and others. One night he was working with John Littlejohn when Ronnie Earl came in. They had met before, down in Louisiana. The two of them ended up on the back steps of the club, playing acoustic guitar all night long, passing the guitar back and forth, talking about Lightnin' Hopkins, and playing their favorite things for each other. That particular night Ronnie decided to produce an album . . . you have the results before you now. The Blues from where he grew up, the blues from the South, flavored with a hot shot of hard driving beat abd urban heat, that's John Campbell; in other words, A Man And His Blues. HERE

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - the iconic and profoundly influential group often cited as the catalysts for of an entire movement in country and roots music - have finished work on their first studio album in five years, "Speed of Life". Recorded in Nashville’s Blackbird Studio and produced by legendary recording guru George Massenburg and GRAMMY award winning singer/songwriter Jon Randall Stewart, “Speed of Life” kicks off with Jimmie Fadden’s blistering harmonica on the opening track “Tulsa Sounds Like Trouble to Me,” setting the tone for an album that spans the gamut from the wistful and flawless vocal harmony of “Resurrection” to “Lost In The Pines,” John McEuen’s evocative banjo showpiece. ‘Speed of Life’ features 13 tracks, including new tunes penned by the band (with help from a handful of friends) and two covers: the Woodstock classic “Going Up The Country” and “Stuck In The Middle.” Not to mention a blazing two-step throwback nod to bluegrass progenitor Jimmy Martin, on the aptly named “Jimmy Martin.” HERE

COLOSSEUM - Anthology (2000)

Colosseum is a British progressive jazz-rock band formed in 1968 by drummer Jon Hiseman, tenor sax player Dick Heckstall-Smith and bass player Tony Reeves, who had previously worked together in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Dave Greenslade, on (organ), was immediately recruited, and the line-up was completed by Jim Roche on (guitar). Roche only recorded one track before being replaced by James Litherland, (guitar and vocals). Colosseum made their live debut in Newcastle and were promptly recorded by influential BBC Radio One DJ John Peel for his Top Gear Radio program. This appearance gained them valuable exposure and critical acclaim. Colosseum's first album, Those Who Are About To Die Salute You, was released by the Fontana label in 1969. Colosseum's second album, also in 1969, was Valentyne Suite, notable as the first release from Vertigo Records, the first label to sign heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath. Vertigo Records was a branch of Philips, established to sign and develop artists that did not fit the main Philips Records brand. Dave "Clem" Clempson replaced James Litherland for the third album, The Grass Is Greener, released in 1970 and only in the United States. Louis Cennamo then replaced Tony Reeves on bass, but was replaced by Mark Clarke within a month, and Hiseman recruited vocalist Chris Farlowe to enable Clempson to concentrate on guitar. This is considered to be the definitive Colosseum line-up, which recorded the 1970 album Daughter of Time. In March 1971, the band recorded its concerts at the Big Apple in Brighton and at Manchester University. Hiseman was impressed with the atmosphere at the Manchester show, and the band returned five days later for a free concert that was also recorded. The recordings were released as a live double album in 1971, Colosseum Live, shortly before the original band broke up. - wikipedia.com HERE

TOTO - Africa (2003)

Toto was an American rock band founded in 1977 by some of the most popular and experienced session musicians of the era. The band enjoyed great commercial success in the 1980s, beginning with the band's self-titled debut, released during 1978. Continuing with 1982's critically acclaimed and commercially successful Toto IV, Toto became one of the best selling music groups of their era. They are known for such hit singles as "Hold the Line", "Rosanna", "Africa", and "Stranger in Town". Although their popularity in the United States diminished in the 1990s and 2000s, they continued to tour and sell out arenas, clubs, and theaters internationally. Toto was known for their technical skill in the studio, as well as a musical style that combines elements of pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock, hard rock, R&B, and jazz. Although they were regularly associated with the soft rock genre, this broad array of musical styles helped them appeal to a variety of musicians and non-musician listeners. STING - If On A Winter's Night... (2009)

If on a Winter's Night presents an arc of songs that conjure the season of spirits, the eerie silences of the snow; days of solitude and reflection for some, a time of re-birth and celebration for many. With traditional music of the British Isles as their starting point, Sting and his guest musicians draw the listener in through a collection of songs, carols, and lullabies spanning the centuries - such as The Snow it Melts the Soonest (traditional Newcastle ballad), Soul Cake (traditional English "begging" song) Gabriel's Message (14th century carol), as well as two of Sting's own compositions - Lullaby for an Anxious Child and The Hounds of Winter. Also featured on the album is Hurdy Gurdy Man - a musical reworking and English translation (by Sting) of Der Leiermann from Schubert's classic winter song-cycle Winterreise. For this exploration of the themes and emotions of winter Sting is joined by friend and long time colleague, guitarist Dominic Miller - and an ensemble of three remarkable musicians from Northern England and Scotland: Kathryn Tickell (fiddle and Northumbrian pipes) Julian Sutton (melodian) and Mary MacMaster (metal string Scottish harp). Additional guest artists include Vincent Ségal (cello), Daniel Hope (violin), Chris Botti (trumpet), Ibrahim Maalouf (trumpet), Stile Antico (vocal ensemble), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Bijan Chemirani (percussion) and the Webb Sisters (vocals). Together they've created an album with a wonderful, warm, and unique ensemble sound - an acoustic meditation on winter. - amazon.com

The Dana Fuchs Band is a hard hitting, bluesy NYC rock band fronted by Dana Fuchs whose powerful, impassioned vocal delivery and dynamic stage performance is matched by her band's deep, soulful groove. Lonely For A Lifetime was produced by Dana's writing partner, guitarist and band co-founder, Jon Diamond, along with veteran bassist/producer, Kenny Aeronson (Bob Dylan, Billy Idol, Mick Taylor). "After countless sold-out shows at the Mercury Lounge and support slots at the Bowery Ballroom, Dana's live energy has now made it into the studio and onto the new CD"- John Moore (promoter, Bowery Ballroom). Supported by Jon's powerful, gritty guitar arrangements; swirling Hammond organ, and anchored by a tight rhythm section, Dana's vocals hit hard with a raw intensity that matches the stark honesty of her lyrics-- Lonely For A Lifetime presents music with strong roots, but a sound and vision both original and deeply personal.

Johnnie Bassett has been a popular bluesman in Detroit for many decades, and his scant few dates for independent labels have been regarded internationally as among the best sounding recordings of his peer group. With this set from Mack Avenue Records, Bassett was given a chance to break out on a broader commercial level. His sleek vocal style contains a sweetness that supersedes any scolding he might dole out. An economical guitarist who is, to say the least, understated, Bassett keeps a light groove going, punctuated by the equally concise and controlled organ playing of Chris Codish and his regular trio the Brothers Groove. A small horn section comprising some of the Motor City's best musicians join the band as they strut through this program of simplified, easygoing, no-nonsense contemporary blues. Though not the rip roaring album some might expect from Bassett, the subdued framework is quite satisfying. Johnnie Bassett has indeed found a comfort zone, and can now be enjoyed, or ostensibly discovered for the first time, by those outside of his native Michigan. - CDuniverse.com

04. Travelin' Blues

06. Time Out
07. I've Got News For You
08. Whippin' Post
09. Them Changes
10. I'll Love You More Than You'll Ever Know
11. Green Eyed Lady
12. Built For Comfort

From a marketing standpoint, Blues Bureau International could have come up with a much better title for this 2009 release than simply Travelin' Blues. Ideally, the title should have been something along the lines of Travelin' Blues: The Best of the Blues Bureau Years, Vol. 1, because this 61-minute CD is, in fact, a best-of collection focusing on hard rock and blues-rock that Pat Travers recorded for Blue Bureau in the 1990s and 2000s. Many of Travers' longtime fans will agree that the Canadian singer/guitarist recorded his most essential work in the 1970s and early '80s, but his Blues Bureau discs are nothing to be ashamed of - and this collection finds him in fine form on solid originals (including "Time Out," "Too Cool Woman Blues," and the title track) as well as ballsy performances of Willie Dixon's "Built for Comfort", Muddy Waters' "Rock Me, Baby," the Allman Brothers' "Whipping Post," and Buddy Miles' "Them Changes."

MICHAEL PACKER - Rikers Island Blues (2009)

01. Prelude To The Blues
02. The Thrill Has Gone
03. I'm Tore Down
04. Somebody Have Mercy
05. Born In New York City
06. Corinna, Corinna
07. Born Under A Bad Sign
08. Sweet Home Chicago

Blues and jail have always seemed to co-exist, even spawning some great works like BB King at Cook County Jail or Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison. In Michael Packer’s case, his one year stint in stir at Rikers Island, New York, gave him both a chance to learn, and perform. Packer did three or four concerts with his in-house band while serving a year there for armed robbery. “Rikers Island Blues” was not recorded at the famous New York gray-bar-hotel as one might infer from the name. Since there is no mention in the liner notes where it was recorded, I am unsure. The first song seems to be a studio song, and the remaining seven tracks are recorded live, somewhere. Track three, “I’m Tore Down,” is announced at Sweet Rhythm, a famous jazz club in Greenwich Village in New York City. The exact recording date is also unclear. Altogether, the eight song set is some enjoyable real-deal Blues.

In 1987, four musicians got together for what they envisioned would be a one-time performance at Tipitina s in New Orleans. It was a night of mostly acoustic music sparse instrumentation with a strong emphasis on songwriting and vocal harmonies. The show far exceeded expectations, and on that March night the Subdudes were born. Nearly 23 years later, after numerous well-received albums and several years of hard touring, The Subdudes (Tommy Malone, John Magnie, Steve Amedée, Tim Cook and Jimmy Messa) keep groovin along with the release of their newest album, Flower Petals. Flower Petals, in fact, has something of an Old West flavor. The songs are loosely tied together by a common theme, set at the turn of the century and mostly told from the point of view of a soldier who has passed on. Toward the end of the recordings, the narrator's spirit is finally released to the great beyond. Interestingly, Flower Petals was originally envisioned as the follow-up to Miracle Mule, the first post-reunion CD by the band that was released in 2004. By August of 2005, the songs for Flower Petals were all written, and rough demo recordings had been made. The band s label at the time, however, persuaded the band to put the project on the backburner and focus on what the label thought would be more appealing: slicker, more commercial songs. In conversations through the years, each of the band members, though, has talked about wanting to return to Flower Petals. Then, last fall, the band embarked on an all-acoustic tour and the guys found themselves returning to the stripped-down sound that harkened back to their earliest days as the Subdudes. It was the perfect sound to complement the rootsy, Americana songs of Flower Petals, so proper studio work on the songs finally got under way earlier this year. The band performs mostly unpled on the recordings. Tommy Malone, of course, is prominent on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, with electric guitar on a number of songs; Magnie plays mostly accordion in lieu of organ, and Steve Amedee is featured prominently on mandolin on several songs. Tim Cook and Jimmy Messa again split bass chores, with Tim also helping out on percussion. The compositions are jointly credited to the five subdudes.

OTIS TAYLOR - Pentatonic Wars And Love Songs (2009) thumbupthumbupthumbup

10. Mama's Best Friend
11. Maybe Yeah
12. Dagger By My Side
13. If You Hope

With his guitar, banjo, gravelly voice, and songs that champion the underdog, Otis Taylor has become one of the most compelling bluesmen of our time. Taylor has long approached the blues with a jazz sensibility, but on “Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs’’ he goes full bore. Take his roster of musicians. Jason Moran, the most original jazz pianist of his generation, brought his trio (bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits) along for the date, and other stellar players such as trumpeter Ron Miles are here, too. Taylor’s tunes build and build like good dramas; he tells stories through song, and the music does the talking as much as the lyrics do. “I’m Not Mysterious’’ tells of an 8-year-old black boy who wants to walk a white girl home from school. “Dagger By My Side’’ is about an extramarital affair gone bad. “If You Hope’’ is a ghost story. The disc’s big surprise is the one song on which Taylor does not sing. His daughter, Cassie Taylor, who has a heavenly voice, gets the lead vocal on “Sunday Morning,’’ which just might be the year’s most beautiful song. Within these songs of love are tales of tragedy and loss, misunderstanding and deception – but often a glimmer of hope as well. "That's just my nature," says Taylor. "I may write love songs, but they aren't always going to be happy and pretty. Look at songs like ‘Teen Angel' or ‘Ode To Billy Joe.' Those are love songs, but they aren't exactly happy. So why shouldn't my songs be considered love songs?" Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs follows Taylor's 2008 opus, Recapturing the Banjo, and album that celebrated the African roots of an instrument whose origins have been largely obscured by its subsequent associations with Appalac

12. Burden Down
13. Call Me A Lover, solo

Big George Brock might have spent most of his life in St. Louis, but he's still got the Delta in his soul. Listen to his 2006 album "Round Two" and you'll hear a blues singer with a voice as big, and almost as compelling, as those of legendary bluesmen such as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Jimmy Reed with whom he's shared stages over the years. He plays his harp as hard as he sings. The fact that Hubert Sumlin joined him for a couple of song is a testament to the esteem his colleagues hold for Big George. He romps through songs such as "Shake for Me," "No No Baby" and "Poor Boy." And his rendition of "Burden Down" is a wonderful blend of gospel and blues.

MANASSAS - Pieces (2009)

After recording his second solo album, Stills formed Manassas in 1971 with a talented group of musicians that included Chris Hillman, a former member of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers. Manassas released two albums, 1972's eponymous double-album debut and the 1973 follow-up, Down The Road. MANASSAS - PIECES features alternate versions of two songs from Down The Road: 'Do You Remember The Americans' and 'Lies' (featuring guitarist Joe Walsh). The collection also includes the legendary group's unreleased performances of 'Sugar Babe' and 'Word Game,' a pair of songs Stills recorded in 1971 for his second solo album. The remaining tracks include 'Like A Fox,' a song recorded with blues guitarist Bonnie Raitt on background vocals and the Latin-tinged 'Tan Sola Y Triste' (Spanish for 'So Alone and Sad'). - amazon.com HERE

CROSBY, STILLS & NASH - CSN (1991)

Crosby, Stills & Nash are one of the best-loved bands in the world. They've done some great stuff. Unfortunately, as a group and as solo artists, they've also done a lot of very mediocre work. Over time, each new album has typically had less and less music worth buying. After you've bought their first 2 albums ("Crosby, Stills, and Nash", and "Deja Vu"), it gets pretty difficult to decide whether to buy anything else. I like about half of the album Daylight Again (released in 1982), and maybe half of CSN (1977). The rest of their albums just aren't worth buying, even though there are a few excellent songs sprinkled among them. This 4-disc collection is superb. Assuming that you already own the first 2 albums, you can buy this collection and own almost everything they've done as a group (and most or all of what they've done as solo artists) that's worth owning. Almost the only song missing that I'd REALLY like to see on here is one David Crosby song ("Compass", if I remember correctly) from the album American Dream (the rest of which is dispensable). This set is also missing a few other good songs from the album Daylight Again (e.g. "Might As Well Have A Good Time", which has superb vocals), but the best ones ("Southern Cross" and "Delta") from that album are here. This album contains several fine songs from Crosby-Nash collaborations ("To The Last Whale"), and a few of Stephen Stills better solo works ("Change Partners", "So Begins The Task"). Among the David Crosby solo numbers are "All Along The Lee Shore" and a wordless vocal performance that is beautiful and haunting. There are a few songs on here that I don't care for, but not many. Graham Nash deserves great credit for putting this set together. He has done an excellent job of selecting the best material. Frankly, this set is so good, and much of their other material is so mediocre, that this set and and their first 2 albums are about all that even ardent fans need to own. Nash probably risked killing sales of other albums when he put together this set. He deserves applause and great thanks for choosing this collection. The set also comes with a booklet that contains interesting short anecdotes and explanations of the songs. Fans will enjoy it a lot. - amazon.com

FLEETWOOD MAC - Tusk (1979) [2004 Expanded Edition]

In the spring of 2004, Warner Strategic Marketing reissued as remastered expanded editions Fleetwood Mac's first three albums with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Tusk restores "Sara" to its original running length (on the previous CD edition, it was offered in a truncated single edit in order to fit the whole album on one disc), and is given a bonus disc with 21 tracks, which is longer than the original double album. Of these, two are previously released single versions of "Think About Me" and "Sisters of the Moon," and of the remaining 19 tracks, only two are previously unheard songs - and both of those are covers, of Jorge Calderon's "Kiss and Run" and the Beach Boys' "Farmer's Daughter" (the former is a rough studio jam, the latter is polished and very good). The rest of the bonus disc contains demos, alternate takes, and working versions of songs from Tusk. Unlike the Rumours bonus disc, where the alternate takes often sounded like unpolished versions of the final takes, these are often really rough takes, which makes them more interesting listens. What's particularly fascinating is to hear several of Buckingham's songs develop from these demo and alternates to the finished versions on the album. "I Know I'm Not Wrong" is singled out with no less than three versions, and it's compelling listening to hear it grow and mutate from each take. Given that it consists of almost nothing but demos and alternates, the bonus disc is more for the historical record than for listening for enjoyment, but it does offer considerably valuable insight into the creation of the great, unwieldy album that is Tusk, which is what makes this one of the finest expanded reissues of a classic record yet released. - All Music Guide HERE

Georgia born blues rock guitarist Tinsley Ellis is set to release his 9th studio album "Speak No Evil" via Alligator Records on October 6th. According to the press release, the album will feature his "most groove-laden guitar work on twelve brutally honest, hard-hitting songs". Over the last 30 years, Ellis has built a huge fan base with his guitar-driven blend of hard-edged Southern rock and roadhouse blues. Inspired equally by British invasion bands such as The Animals, Cream, and The Rolling Stones alongside the three Kings - Freddie, B.B. and Albert, Tinsley has earned rave reviews for his brand of electric blues rock, of which Rolling Stone Magazine said, "feral blues guitar...non-stop gigging has sharpened his six-string to a razor's edge...his eloquence dazzles...he achieves pyrotechnics that rival Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton." When guitarist Jeff Healey passed away in March 2008, he left behind Mess of Blues, a posthumously-released album that was a love letter to his fans and to blues music. The album garnered the late talent a well-deserved truckload of awards, and served as a fitting testament to his enormous skills as a blues guitarist. It left his fans around the world wanting just a little bit more, though, a desire fulfilled by Songs From The Road. Assembled by bassist Alec Fraser - Healey's musical foil for his blues and his jazz projects alike for over a decade - Songs From The Road offers up eleven inspired and energetic performances of vintage pop, rock, and blues music taken from three different concerts. The bulk of the set, five songs, are from Healey's August 2006 appearance at the notable Notodden Blues Festival in Norway. Four songs were taken from a May 2007 show in London, while a pair are courtesy of Jeff Healey's Roadhouse club in Toronto, circa November 2007. - blues.about.com
