BLONDE ON BLONDE - Discography
Blonde on Blonde was a guitar-led psychedelic rock group from South Wales. The band was originally formed in Newport in 1967 by vocalist/guitarist Ralph Patel, drummer Les Hicks, bassist/organist Richard Hopkins and guitarist/sitar player Gareth Johnson. The band was named after Bob Dylan's 1966 album of the same name. They disbanded in early 1972. Even though they enjoyed strong reviews from music critics and achieved massive exposure playing before gigantic crowds at the 1969 Isle of Wight festival (coincidently headlined by Dylan), they never managed to generate much in the way of sales. In 1968 the quartet left Wales for London. Playing clubs such as London's Middle Earth generated publicity for the band, and Pye Records eventually signed the band. Contrasts, released in 1969 and produced by Barry Murray, has been described as progressive[citation needed]. The album included the Robin Williamson covers "No Sleep Blues" and "I Need My Friend". A personal favorite was Patel's hysterical "Conversationally Making The Grade". Also included was a cover of The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby". 1970's Rebirth was released in the wake of a heavy touring schedule and a massive personnel upheaval that saw singer/guitarist Ralph Patel replaced by school friend David Thomas. (For some reason bassist Hopkins was also credited as 'Richard John'.) Thomas' introduction gave the band a tougher, rock-oriented sound. Their sophomore album was varied, including Moody Blues-styled ballads ("Castles In The Sky"), progressive romps ("You'll Never Know Me/Release") and fuzz-propelled rockers ("November"). Their final album Reflections On A Life was released by Ember Records in 1971 to critical indifference, achieving only modest commercial success. This could be partly attributed to the somewhat controversial content for the times, for example the eulogy to the joys of incest, "I don't care" whose lyrics included the lines: "makin' love with your flesh and blood, every night, some say it's evil, but I say it's alright".

DIRTY TRICKS - Discography
Meat n' potatoes Hard Rockers DIRTY TRICKS formed in 1974 and three delivered unpretentious Hard Rock albums for the Polydor label. The band debuted live at London's Marquee Club as openers to DUX DELUXE during January of 1975. DIRTY TRICKS debuted with an eponymous Rodger Bain produced set promoted by support tours in the UK to both ARGENT and BUDGIE. In June of 1975 Australian drummer John Lee, a former member of DINGOES, BLACKFEATHER and ARIEL, joined the fold. Lee would quit following the third album 'Hit And Run' and was superseded by Andy Bierne. Tony Visconti would be on hand to produce the band's second effort. Touring for this release would witness British support dates to the STREETWALKERS and gigs across America as guests to CHEAP TRICK, BLUE OYSTER CULT and BOB SEGAR. The group bowed out in 1977 with 'Hit And Run', another Visconti produced affair. After the group had finally called it quits the Binnie / Horbury / Bierne triumvirate put in some rehearsals with OZZY OSBOURNE, then having just decamped from BLACK SABBATH. This proposed band folded as Osbourne duly rejoined BLACK SABBATH. Bassist Terry Horbury would then join VARDIS in 1983, guitarist John Frazer Binnie wound up joining the high profile ROGUE MALE in the early 80s. Bierne eventually turned up in PRAYING MANTIS, SCORCHED EARTH, GRAND PRIX and 1987's DORIAN GRAY. Stewart meantime hooked up with erstwhile SIDEWINDER and STALLION guitarist STUART SMITH to found FRENCH KISS, a band unit completed by drummer Kelvin 'Yatta' Yates. Stewart and Smith later relocated to America forging INFORMER. DIRTY TRICKS members Binnie, Horbury and Stewart evolved into tribute band STAIRWAY TO ZEPPELIN during the 90s fronted by one 'Robert Planet' a.k.a Kenny Stewart. Majestic Rock Records re-issued all three DIRTY TRICKS albums in 2004, all boasting extra studio and live tracks. In a surprise move, DIRTY TRICKS returned to action in 2009 to record new album tracks dubbed 'Up At The 9 Count'. The band unit comprised John Fraser-Binnie, Kenny Stewart along with new recruits bassist Fingerthumbs and drummers Richard Marcanjelo and Reuben O'Donoghue.

MEAT LOAF - Bat Out of Hell (1977)
Michael Lee Aday, better known by his stage names Meat Loaf and Meat Loaf Aday, is an American rock musician and actor.
Overwrought and undeniable, Meat Loaf's "Bat out of Hell" remains both one of rock's biggest - and least likely - hit albums. The byproduct of a partnership between beefy singer Marvin Lee "Meat Loaf" Aday and fellow journeyman/National Lampoon Road Show cast member Jim Steinman, Bat out of Hell met 1977's vaunted Year of Punk with a blast of neo-operatic, Wagnerian-scaled bombast (based on Peter Pan, no less) that was as reactionary as anything the spiked set and their supporters could possibly imagine - 13 million units worth, and counting. Bat seems to have thrived on the same formula that's made Andrew Lloyd Webber a multimillionaire knight: if you do kitsch, do it big. And what could be more kitschy and emblematic of the '70s than the ubiquitous "classic rock" (an overused adjective that applies all too well here) of "Two out of Three Ain't Bad" or the breathless nookie-quest, "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," replete with Phil Rizzuto calling the play-by-play? This digitally remastered edition also includes '78-vintage bonus live cuts of "Bolero" (the live show's equally over-the-top opener) and "Bat out of Hell" that showcase the production's energetic, perfectionist bent. The sonic upgrading here also underscores the oft-overlooked efforts of producer Todd Rundgren. - amazon.com HERE

WILLIE NELSON - A Classic And Unreleased Collection (1995)
"A Classic And Unreleased Collection" spans Willie Nelson's career. It includes early demos, outtakes and alternate versions of songs, as well as three entire, previously unreleased albums from various points in his career: LIVE AT THE TEXAS OPRY HOUSE, SUGAR MOON and WILLIE SINGS HANK WILLIAMS. Like Dylan's THE BOOTLEG SERIES and Van Morrison's PHILOSOPHER'S STONE, this gathers a wide assortment of previously unreleased tracks from throughout the artist's career. This three-CD box set, originally available only through QVC, starts with Willie's first single, a Hank Williams-esque original, then jumps to a sparsely arranged 1961 songwriting demo session. Nelson's considerable songwriting talents are amply evident on these obscure numbers, as is his capable singing. Hearing these, you wonder why Nelson never hit it big as a performer during the 1960's.
The set then jumps to the early 1970's and Willie's albums SHOTGUN WILLIE and PHASES AND STAGES, from which numerous outtakes are included. Eleven songs from a live show in 1974 show include less frantic performances of many numbers featured on 1978's WILLIE AND FAMILY LIVE. Then comes a too-brief collection of Western Swing songs, performed in the studio with Merle Haggard's band. The box comes full circle by closing with ten Hank Williams songs, taken from a shelved tribute album. CLASSIC AND UNRELEASED should not be confused with Columbia's three-CD box REVOLUTIONS OF TIME, a conventional greatest hits package covering Willie's later career. This set is better suited to the devoted Nelson fan than to the casual listener.
Personnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar); Pete Carr (acoustic & electric guitars, dobro); Steve Burgh, Fred Carter, Jr. (acoustic guitar); Pete Wade, Ray Edenton, Ron Cornelius, Mac Gayden, Reggie Young, Clint Strong (guitar); John Hughey, Norm Hamlet (steel guitar); Tiny Moore (electric mandolin); Jimmy Belken (fiddle); Don Markham (saxophone, trumpet); Gary Church (trombone); Hargus "Pig" Robbins, Bobbie Nelson, Bobby Emmons, Mark Yeary, Bucky Meadows (piano); Jeff Gutcheon (organ); Barry Beckett (keyboards); Bob Moore, Bee Spears, David Hood, Tommy Cogbill, Dennis Hromek, David Zettner (bass); Willie Ackerman, Paul English, Roger Hawkins, Kenny Malone, Biff Adam (drums).

Gwyn Ashton is a blues and rock guitarist. He spent most of his life in Australia but now lives in England. He has performed as opening act for Rory Gallagher, B. B. King, Van Morrison, Jeff Healey and Status Quo, among others. The album "Two-Man Blues Army" roars into life with a raucous onslaught of soupy, swampy, scruff-of-the-neck revved up Hendrix-y electric guitar, as the appropriately-titled "Meltdown At The Hoo" hits top gear and hammers away at your senses! The whole album of killer tunes represents a definite melding of traditional blues-meets-the-21st century. Two-Man Blues Army is a masterclass in rocking garage blues, a feast of big riffs, killer guitar tones and searing vocals. More importantly, the record crackles with the raw, spontaneous energy of a live show, something often absent from many modern blues albums.HERE

JENNIFER WARNES - Famous Blue Raincoat - 20th Anniversary Edition (2007) ![]()

![]()
Best known for such pop hits as the Oscar and Grammy winning duets "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," with Bill Medley, from the film Dirty Dancing, and "Up Where We Belong," with Joe Cocker, from the film An Officer and a Gentleman, Jennifer Warnes has earned her greatest acclaim for Farmous Blue Raincoat, considered by many to be one of the best albums of the '80s. On Famous Blue Raincoat: The Songs of Leonard Cohen, Jennifer Warnes rearranged and reinterpreted some of Leonard Cohen's greatest songs for a unique album that remains the ultimate tribute to Cohen's music.
Jennifer Warnes is a singer's singer, and Leonard Cohen is a songwriter's songwriter. They are each at the front of their game...and are brilliant in unique, almost tangible ways. I am not certain whose idea this CD was, but what a wondrous pairing! Warnes adds new levels to each of the eight excellent Cohen songs she interprets here...and does a remarkable job on her songwriting collaboration with Cohen, "Song of Bernadette." Americans barely noticed this superb collection; it was overshadowed by Warnes' #1 song "The Time Of My Life" of the same year. However, I don't believe anyone can say he or she has heard Jennifer Warnes without hearing this recording first! Warnes' immaculate interepretation of "Famous Blue Raincoat" blows Tori Amos' well-known version out of the water! Just as exquisite are "Bird On A Wire," "First We Take Manhattan" and "Ain't No Cure For Love." Warnes and her co-producer, C. Roscoe Beck, handpicked a batch of amazing musicians for this 1987 CD, including a Stevie Ray Vaughan guitar performance that is mind-blowing! Snatch this CD up and listen to it like there is no tomorrow...it's brilliant! - amazon.com HERE

ROD STEWART - The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998 (2009)
While Big Star's reputation grows with every passing day, despite 30 years of increasingly unlistenable solo music from leader Alex Chilton, the wonder of Rod Stewart's early albums has been overshadowed by the tartan, the blondes and Da Ya Think I'm Sexy. The Stewart box attempts to rectify that perception. Across it's 63 (+ 5 hidden tracks) unreleased recordings, we learn that a lot of work went into making the lyrics of Maggie May sound so casual, that given a sympathetic setting even Sailing has a quiet majesty, and that Stewart was a great interpreter of other people's songs (the version of The First Cut Is the Deepest is staggering). But the gems are all on the first two discs – and the curious are advised to pick up Every Picture Tells a Story and work from there. The Big Star set, by contrast, gathers virtually all the band's official recordings and supplements them with curios, demos and a live show. The occasional individual recording is revelatory – a demo of Downs from their third album reveals the song behind the mess that finally appeared – but its real value lies in showing so clearly how Big Star went from their bright, confident first album to that ennui-drenched third. It helps that the music along the way is among the very best of the period. - The Guardian
Warner Bros. goes deep into the vaults to reveal the secret studio history of this very public performer with a boxed set of unreleased recordings chosen from sessions spanning 1971-1998. Encompassing more than 25 years, this collection's 63 songs, outtakes, and ephemera provide extraordinary insight into the studio work of one of rock's legendary figures and paints a picture of what might have been. Many of these performances are more stripped-down and intimate than their released counterparts, so the set becomes an illustration and a showcase of Rod's creative process. - amazon.com

John Hammond's blues career has spanned the better part of the last five decades. From coffeehouses to concert halls, to festivals and beyond, Hammond emerged the ever-consummate blues man out of the great blues renaissance of the 60's. And while the 60's renaissance was largely an electric affair, Hammond has managed to keep vital the embodiment of the quintessential acoustic blues troubadour with brilliant acoustic guitar and rack harmonica playing and an impassioned voice. A Grammy Award winner and four time nominee, Hammond is also a multiple W.C. Handy award winner and has shared the stage and/or recorded with many of the masters, including Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf.
Rough & Tough offers brilliant blues in a wonderfully unlikely New York place: St Peter's Episcopal Church. Album circa 36 from John Hammond finds him on fire, absolutely solo, live, and superbly well-recorded. - amazon.com HERE

FATS DOMINO - The Gold Collection - Classic Performances (1997)
They call him the Fat Man. With his easy-rolling boogie-woogie piano and smooth rhythm & blues vocals, Antoine “Fats” Domino put a New Orleans-style spin on what came to be known as rock and roll. A pianist, singer, and songwriter who was born in the Crescent City in 1928, Domino sold more records (65 million) than any Fifties-era rocker except Elvis Presley. Between 1950 and 1963, he cracked the pop Top Forty thirty-seven times and the R&B singles chart fifty-nine times. Domino’s biggest songs are as winning as his broad smile. They include “Ain’t That a Shame,” “Blueberry Hill,” “I’m Walkin’,” “Blue Monday” and “Walking to New Orleans.” Domino was born into a musical family and, like such New Orleans piano greats as Professor Longhair and Amos Milburn, began performing for small change in local honky-tonks while working odd jobs to make ends meet. By 1949, Domino had become a fixture at the Hideaway Club. That same year he met Dave Bartholomew, who became his longtime producer, bandleader and collaborator. It proved to be a fortuitous partnership that yielded a bounty of durable, straight-ahead New Orleans rhythm & blues records. While less of an outgoing personality than some of his extroverted rock and roll contemporaries, Domino exhibited staying power based on the solid musicality of his recordings and live performances. In short, he all but dominated the Fifties, insofar as rock and roll was concerned. HERE

The following year he joined Howlin' Wolf's band and he quickly became an in-demand drummer for hire, working with the cream of the Chicago Blues artists, including John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Junior Wells, Muddy Waters, Magic Sam, Jimmy Rogers, Earl Hooker, Eddie Taylor and Otis Rush. MIKE ZITO - Pearl River (2009)
There is one glaring problem that all whom listen to Mike Zito's new album "Pearl River", will no doubt notice, that being that this release is just not long enough. Yes even at 55+ minutes, Mike Zito's "Pearl River", is simply going to leave you wanting more. "Pearl River" is an Album that sounds like it was soaked in the Blues, rinsed with Rock N Roll, and dried with a towel laced with Soul, thanks in part not only because of Mike's magic, but also the magic brought to this Album by it's special guests performers, namely, Reese Wynans (Double Trouble), Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne and Susan Cowsill. "Pearl River" is an exceptional follow-up to his Eclecto Groove Records debut "Today", and leaves you with the feeling that although Mike may not yet be the King of his style, he is certainly in line for the crown, and will no doubt be wearing it one day. JIMMY PAGE - No Introduction Necessary [Deluxe Edition] (2002)
Before the name Jimmy Page became synonymous with hard rock guitar, the guitarist was a much sought-after session player in London -- appearing on a variety of artists' recordings. Some were well known (the Kinks, the Who, etc.), but quite a few were obscurities -- which serves as the basis for the 20-track No Introduction Necessary [Deluxe Edition]. Although Led Zeppelin touched upon a variety of musical styles throughout their career, the first 14 tracks could all be neatly placed in the 1960s rock & roll/pop genre -- the amps are certainly not cranked to ten here. But you do get a glimpse into Page's playing as a 'hired gun' -- "Lovin' Up a Storm" and "Boll Weevil Song" are enjoyable (yet not exactly 'must-hear') selections. Closer to the hard rock sound you expect from Page are several tracks that close out the collection, which are taken from the obscure 1970 Screaming Lord Sutch recording, Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends. Page produces and plays on the record (even co-penning a few tracks), and while the music does reflect early Led Zeppelin at times (John Bonham also plays), the vocals of Screaming Lord Sutch don't come close to matching up to those of Robert Plant. Overall, not a bad compilation of Page's early playing. ~ All Music Guide HERE

JAY GAUNT - Blown Away (2008)
Jay Gaunt began playing blues harmonica just as he turned 12. He developed a fascination for blues music with an emphasis for harmonica. One of Jay’s first exposures to blues was the Blues Brothers Movie, and he instantly became obsessed with it. Jay went to see Dan Aykroyd (in full Elwood mode) when he was hosting Chick Willis & Dwight Edwards at the Opus Theater in New York (June 2006). Dan called Jay up to sit in on the encore. The moment he stepped on stage, Jay knew that he wanted to pursue his interest in harmonica. Since then he has been hungrily seeking out everything he can find that relates to harmonica, blues, and all blues-influenced music. Jay’s passion for the blues fuels him to listen to blues music, learn blues history and play blues harmonica – constantly! While Jay’s favorite music is the blues and he feels most comfortable playing it, he is not limited to just one genre. He is also interested in playing jazz, funk, and rock. Jay’s main influences on harmonica are James Cotton, Jason Ricci, Little Walter, Dennis Gruenling, Paul Butterfield, Chris Michalek, Sonny Boy Williamson, Kim Wilson, and Junior Wells. However, Jay does not only listen to harmonica players, he draws influence from an array of musicians as diverse as Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, and Donny Hathaway. Jay is not just interested in playing in a traditional blues context, even though he loves doing so, he wants to push the instrument in new directions. In the spring of 2008, Jay recorded Blown Away with producer and musician Ed Ivey in San Francisco. The CD featured some of the Bay Area’s finest musicians such as Eric McFadden on guitar and Nelson Lunding on piano. HERE

MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND - The Very Best Of: Vol.1 & 2 (1993)
Manfred Mann's Earth Band have tended to represent the lighter side of prog over the years, gradually moving towards more commercial albums as they enjoyed singles success. This excellent collection of many of their best tracks, foregoes chronological presentation in order to ensure the eye catching singles appear first. Thus the excellent early prog interpretation of Dylan's "Father of day, Father of night" is hidden away half way through CD2, while the enormously successful (and admittedly excellent) cover of Springsteen's "Blinded by the light" opens (and indeed closes with a live version) the album. All the singles are here, although it is disappointing to find that room has only been found for the edited version of "Davy's on the road again". With the collection extending to 2 CD's, space is however available for some less well known, but nonetheless excellent MMEB tracks such as Bob Marley's "Redemption song" from "Somewhere in Afrika", and "Singing the dolphin through" plus "The road to Babylon" from "The roaring silence". While MMEB are not short of song writing talent themselves, their forte has always been their ability to transform the works of others, and in particular Dylan and Springsteen, into prog pop classics. In addition to those already mentioned tracks, "For you", "Spirits in the night" and of course "The mighty Quinn" offer further worthy examples of such interpretations. In all, a good diverse representation of the band's work. There are of course notable omissions, (personally I reckon "Waiting for the rain" should be number one on any draft listing for a MMEB compilation), but you can please some of the people etc.

Mr. Iverson Minter, better known around the world as Louisiana Red, is an expatriate American bluesman living in Germany who has brought his incendiary guitar and raw, soulful vocals to appreciate blues fans in both the U.S. and Europe since the early-1950s. Although his unique style of gritty Delta-influenced juke-joint blues are often overlooked by stateside audiences, Red has released better than two-dozen albums throughout his lengthy career, and performed alongside legends like John Lee Hooker and Lightnin' Hopkins. Jumping at the chance to work with his musical idol in the studio, album producer and guitarist Little Victor picked out a flat dozen of his favorite Louisiana Red tunes and enlisted guests like harpists Bob Corritore and Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, as well as pianist Dave Maxwell, to record Back to the Black Bayou at the Juke Joint Studios in Notodden, Norway. Working with a core band of Norwegian blues musicians in an old-school, 24-track analog studio with real 2" tape, RCA ribbon microphones, and a vintage 1960s mixing console once owned by Stax Records, Little Victor and crew captured the brilliant energy and passion of each one of Louisiana Red's performances. PHIL GUY & LURIE BELL - Chicago's Hottest Guitars: Chicago Blues Session, Vol.25 (1998) ![]()
![]()
![]()
Lurrie Bell is a blues guitarist and singer. His father was renowned blues harmonica player Carey Bell. Phil Guy (1940 - 2008) was an American blues guitarist. He was the younger brother of Buddy Guy. He didn't eclipse his older brother Buddy's status as a blues superstar, and in reality, Phil's funky brand of blues was not captured correctly for posterity. But he remained an active attraction on the Chicago circuit, following in his sibling's footsteps and patiently waiting for his own star to rise up until his death. Like his sibling, Phil Guy played with harpist Raful Neal (for a decade) before leaving the Baton Rouge scene for Chicago in 1969. There he played with his brother's high-energy organization as well as behind harpist Junior Wells (Phil handled guitar duties with Sammy Lawhorn on Wells' underrated mid-'70s Delmark album On Tap). Phil Guy cut albums of his own for JSP; they were generally lacking in originality if not spirit. Phil Guy lost his battle with liver and kidney cancer in August of 2008. HERE

BIG STAR - Keep An Eye On The Sky (2009)
Big Star is an American rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1971 by Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel. The group broke up in 1974, but reorganized with a new line-up nearly twenty years later and is active today.
"Keep An Eye On The Sky" spans 1968 to 1975 and the collection uncovers a trove of unreleased demos, unused mixes, alternate versions of songs, and a 1973 concert recorded in Memphis. The lavish packaging includes extensive liner notes, rare and never-before-seen photos, and insightful essays about the cult of Big Star and the band's history. Spotlighting the band's roots, the box set opens with several songs recorded before Big Star formed, including 'Try Again,' one of the first songs Bell and Chilton wrote together. Big Star inspired a fevered allegiance among fans of power pop, giving rise to a cult of believers who spent decades spreading the gospel. Their enthusiasm turned this obscure Memphis pop band-one that got little airplay, sold few records, and only played a handful of times-into a remarkable rock and roll resurrection story. Big Star's trek from obscure Memphis band to standard bearers for an entire genre of music has never been fully mapped-until now.

JOAN JETT - Fit To Be Tied: Great Hits By Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (2006)
Every teenage girl who has picked up a guitar since Jett's first band the Runaways hit the scene back in '75 owes her a huge debt of gratitude. While bandmate Lita Ford had the chops and Sue Thomas (who never recorded with them) found greater commercial success as Michael Steele with The Bangles, it was Joan Jett who embodied the punk attitude that would inform the "riot grrrl" movement twenty years later. Unfortunately, the Runaways did not achieve the commercial success that their imitators enjoyed. Jett would later find that success in the MTV era, leading The Blackhearts. This compilation documents both her artistic and commercial triumphs. She topped the charts in '82 with "I Love Rock N Roll" and had several other top twenty hits including "Do You Wanna Touch Me? (Oh Yeah!)" and starred opposite Michael J. Fox in the film "Light Of Day." 15 years before Sleater-Kinney, she raised eyebrows by recording the Tommy James hit "Crimson And Clover" without changing the gender to reflect a (heterosexual) woman's point of view. FIT TO BE TIED makes certain that Jett will always be remembered for the ground she broke. - cduniverse.com HERE

PAT BENATAR - Ultimate Collection (2008)
Ultimate Collection features 40 of her all-time classic Pat Benatar tracks and simply put is a must-have for any 80’s power-rock fan! On top of the numerous hit singles and albums accredited to her name, Pat Benatar can also boast 4 Grammy’s, countless sold out tours and as a consequence of the recent explosion in interest of classic 80s power ballad albums (albeit in a slightly ironic fashion!), years of non-stop MTV airplay. In 1978 Pat signed a deal with Chrysalis records and a year later saw the release of her debut album ‘IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT’. The album produced two hit singles ‘Heartbreaker’ and ‘We Live For Love’. Pat’s second album was released in 1980, and entitled ‘CRIMES OF PASSION’ it resulted in her 1st Grammy. This album held 4 hit singles ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot’, ‘Treat Me Right’, ‘You Better Run’ and ‘Hell Is For Children’. Her third album, ‘PRECIOUS TIME’, reached # 30 in the UK but hit #1 in the US and went on to produce the fantastic singles ‘Promises In The Dark’, ‘Precious Time’ and ‘Fire and Ice’ - the latter gaining Pat her 2nd Grammy. The forth album, ‘GET NERVOUS’, saw the release of 3 more phenomenal tracks ‘Shadows of the Night’ (which went on to win her a 3rd Grammy), ‘Little Too Late’ and ‘Looking For A Stranger’. It was the release of her single ‘Love is a Battlefield’, taken from the album ‘LIVE FROM EARTH’, that really gave Pat immense exposure in the UK as the track entered into the UK Top 20 and resulted in yet another Grammy. Her following 3 albums ‘TROPICO’ (which produced one of her most famous power-rock ballads to date ‘We Belong’), ‘SEVEN THE HARD WAY’ and ‘WIDE AWAKE IN DREAMLANDS’ all went on to have great chart success both sides of the Atlantic and secured Pat Benatar’s place at the forefront of her musical genre for years to come.
Fantastic 2008 two CD collection from the Rock vocalist. Throughout her career, Benatar has appealed to Classic Rock fans, New Wavers and sophisticated Pop followers alike. This 40 track collection is the perfect introduction to a whole new generation. DOLORES O'RIORDAN - No Baggage (2009)
If ever a band demonstrated the disconnection between the rock media and the paying public, it was The Cranberries. The Irish band sold over 40 million albums worldwide, yet it was difficult to find a decent word written about them across a five-album career. Lead singer Dolores O'Riordan came in for a disproportionate amount of stick for her “cat-sat-mat” approach to lyrics. Although her second solo album, No Baggage, may not gain her any new converts, those who hold her dear will be delighted.
First bursting upon the music scene as lead singer of The Cranberries, Dolores O'Riordan has already had one of the most successful careers in popular music of the past 20 years. With four top 20 Billboard albums, eight hit singles, and worldwide album sales of over 40 million under her belt, she decided to embark on a solo journey. Her first solo disc, Are You Listening?, came out in 2007 and now, two years later she is back in action with No Baggage, a bright, clean, and astoundingly emotive recording. The album features not only Dolores' instantly recognizable vocal style and songwriting, but also a glimpse into a life viewed forwards and backwards simultaneously, seen most prominently in the quasi-Beatlesque track, "Fly Through" and the infectious, driving lead single, "The Journey." BOB DYLAN - Biograph (1985)
"Biograph [1985] A 5-LP box (3 CD BOX) set retrospective of Dylan’s work from 1962–81, packaged with an unprecedented collection of personal and rare photographs and equally unprecedented interview comments by Dylan about the songs themselves, plus other interview material ranging over many topics in which Dylan, sometimes surly but more often open, remains unpredictable and spikey. Though criticised (inevitably) by some collectors, it is a fine if quirky selection of previously issued album tracks plus a significant number of previously unreleased recordings: a different take of ‘Mixed-Up Confusion’ (1962); ‘Baby, I’m in the Mood for You’ (1962); the exquisitely performed ‘protest’ number ‘Percy’s Song’ (1963); the incomparable ‘Lay Down Your Weary Tune’ (1963); by no means the best take of ‘I’ll Keep It with Mine’ (1965); a fragment, previously unknown even to avid collectors, from the Highway 61 Revisited sessions, ‘Jet Pilot’ (1965); the wonderful ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’ (1965); live cuts from the 1966 tour— the electric ‘I Don’t Believe You’ and the acoustic solo ‘Visions of Johanna’ and ‘It’s All Over Now Baby Blue’; the belated release of take 2 of the original 1967 Dylan & the Crackers takes of ‘Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)’—though take 1 had long circulated unofficially; a publisher’s office demo solo of ‘Forever Young’ (1973); the original studio cut of ‘You’re a Big Girl Now’ and the Blood on the Tracks outtake ‘Up to Me’(1974); the lovely Desire outtake ‘Abandoned Love’ (1975); excellent live recordings of two other Desire songs, ‘Isis’ and ‘Romance in Durango’, from the first Rolling Thunder Revue (1975); a major song from the Shot of Love sessions, ‘Caribbean Wind’ (1981), and a live ‘Heart of Mine’ (1981). An affirmation of the astonishing variety as well as richness of Dylan’s corpus, the collection was well-received by the public and went some way to reviving that fickle thing, Dylan’s critical reputation."

VAN MORRISON - It's Too Late To Stop Now (1974) [2008 REMASTER]
"It's Too Late to Stop Now" is a live album by Van Morrison, released in 1974. Frequently named as one of the best live albums ever recorded, "It's Too Late to Stop Now" was recorded during what has often been said to be Morrison's greatest phase as a live performer. Van Morrison was at the top of his game when he cut this two-disc live set that showcases hits from his first solo phase, a couple of Them classics, and key R&B covers. DAVE D'ANGELICO - The Blues According To Texas Son (2009)
"The Blues According To Texas Son" is an excellent musical document from this outstanding blues guitarist based out of upstate New York. A classic, timeless, dynamic, collection of 21 tracks recorded through the years (1988 - 2005) by this talented bluesy Telecaster guitar-slinger. Highly recommended to fans of Roy Buchanan, Johnny Winter, Eric Clapton, SRV, Trower, Albert Collins, Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl, Albert and Freddie King, and to fans of "serious" pure heavy blues guitar magic. Tune into the Man and his music on the appropriately titled, The Blues According To Texas Son. Dave D'Angelico, aka Texas Son, is a righteous blues/rock guitarist who has been slingin' his trademark '68 Telecaster in various blues bars and juke joints in Upstate New York over the past several decades. The band started out as the N'Betweens in 1966 with Noddy Holder and amongst others were Tony Taylor (aka Big T), formed from members of two Midlands bands, The Vendors and Steve Brett & The Mavericks. They initially had little success, apart from on the local club circuit, where they were extremely busy and in the late 1960s the band changed its name to Ambrose Slade and hooked up with manager Chas Chandler. Their name was eventually shortened to Slade, and the band adopted a skinhead look, as an attempt to gain publicity from what was a newsworthy youth fashion trend.
Reissue on CD of the pre-SLADE album "Beginnings" when they wer still called AMBROSE SLADE. It's the full SLADE line up but then in their freak/psych days. HERE

"Mason Casey is a passionate singer, a skilled harmonica player, and a worthy songwriter who co-wrote most of the group originals on his recent CD. Sometimes the words are not overly subtle (as on "You Make It Hard"), but they usually contain some wit, plenty of feeling, and occasional insight. Casey's band is excellent in its supportive role and the overall music is a good example of the rock side of the blues. With producer Jon Tiven also co-writing many of the songs and alternating between most of the key instruments, Mason Casey was in good company for this spirited Nashville blues set." - All MUsic Guide HERE

JIM CUDDY - The Light That Guides You Home (2006) ![]()
"Light That Guides You Home", the second solo album from Blue Rodeo co-leader Jim Cuddy, doesn't deviate much from his band's roots rock, jangle pop sound. Which is good news for followers of the veteran Canadian band, or just admirers of their smart rock craftsmanship. The winning title track immediately alerts listeners that Cuddy's at the top of this game. The tune, an apologia for a hopeful reconciliation, is a chimey mid-tempo rocker that brings to mind the old Del Amitri hit, "Always the Last to Know." The record is rife with tales of damaged or broken relationships. The bittersweet "Maybe Sometimes" finds Cuddy lamenting "there's never the chance to say goodbye" amidst picturesque imagery of the sun rising over Lake Louise and fond memories of "quiet smiles and silent walking." On the spare "Pull Me Through," he admits, "There's messages I should return/And people I should call/I'm still tripping over echoes/Left lying in the hall." The reflective "She Gets Down" holds the telling insight: "Sometimes the world we want is different than the one we find." While literate lyrics, long a Cuddy hallmark, are in fine evidence here, this album isn't a starch dry effort in songcraft. One of the most memorable tracks is the rollicking "Married Again." A twangy duet featuring Kathleen Edwards, it contains the great couplet "Sixteen bottles and a wedding trunk/Oughta be a law about marrying drunk." Cuddy, who co-produced the CD with guitarist Colin Cripps, does a fine job of shifting moods and tempos throughout the disc. Strings and keyboards broaden Cuddy's guitar-based musical core. There's even a muted trumpet solo that punctuates "Pull Me Through." A good example of this variety comes with the stellar trio of tunes that conclude the album. The folk-poppy "Falling" flows into the quietly stirring "What She Said," which is followed by the rousing set-closer "Stagger In." While this disc might just seem like a busman's holiday from Blue Rodeo, Cuddy nonetheless has fashioned a thoroughly absorbing solo outing populated with memorable roots rock that resonates in the heart and the mind. ~ All Music Guide HERE

THE BYRDS - The Best Of (1994)
The Byrds were an American rock and roll band. Formed in Los Angeles, California in 1964, The Byrds underwent several personnel changes, with frontman Roger McGuinn remaining the sole consistent member until the group's disbandment in 1973. Their trademark songs include covers of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "My Back Pages" and Pete Seeger’s "Turn! Turn! Turn!", as well as the originals "I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better", "Eight Miles High" and "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star." The Byrds were popular and influential during the mid-1960s and into the early 1970s. Initially, the band played folk rock, melding influences such as the British Invasion sound, contemporary folk and pop music. Later they expanded their sound into such sub-genres as space rock, psychedelic rock and, on their 1968 album Sweetheart of the Rodeo, country rock. During 1991 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2004 Rolling Stone Magazine ranked them #45 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. HERE

THE BEACH BOYS - California Girls (1997)
The Beach Boys are an American rock band. Formed in 1961, the group gained popularity for its close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a Southern California youth culture of cars, surfing, and romance. Brian Wilson's growing creative ambitions later transformed them into a more artistically innovative group that earned critical praise and influenced many later musicians. The group was initially composed of singer-musician-composer Brian Wilson, his brothers, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. This core quintet, along with early member David Marks and later bandmate Bruce Johnston, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 1988. The Beach Boys have often been called "America's Band", and Allmusic.com has stated that "the band's unerring ability... made them America's first, best rock band." The group has had thirty-six U.S. Top 40 hits (the most of any U.S. rock band) and fifty-six Hot 100 hits, including four number one singles. Rolling Stone magazine listed The Beach Boys as number 12 in the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. THE MONKEES - I'm A Believer And Other Hits (1997)
From the Rhino Records budget subsidiary Flashback comes the ten-track I'm a Believer and Other Hits EP. While there is no indication on the front cover artwork, this release has several notable inclusions - chief among them the previously unreleased ballad "Ceiling in My Room." Also included - in a decidedly haphazard running order - are the A- and B-sides of the 45s "I'm a Believer"/"I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone," "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You"/"The Girl I Knew Somewhere," and "Someday Man"/"Listen to the Band." Although neither "Cuddly Toy" nor "Shades of Gray" were issued as singles, they were included on the 1969 Monkees Greatest Hits package. "Heart and Soul" is the A-side of their first single for Rhino Records from their 1987 reunion flop, Pool It! This compilation has taken a lot of flak from casual fans as well as collectors. "Ceiling in My Room" - the only unique track on the disc - is best described as a weepy and introspective milquetoast affair sung by Davy Jones. After less than 30 seconds, it is easy to understand why this track has rightfully remained vaulted. It is wholly unequal to even the most tepid of Jones contributions to any Monkees recording. In fact, "On the Day We Fall in Love" from More of the Monkees seems aggressive by comparison. The other side of the argument is that this is indeed a bargain-priced compilation. However, more important for the insatiable Monkees enthusiast are the lesser-circulated 45 versions of the tracks issued as singles. For example, "I'm a Believer" and "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" contain notably different mixes. While this 1997 disc is relatively easy to locate, the same cannot be said of Daydream Believer and Other Hits, which includes the unissued side "You Can't Tie a Mustang Down" and was inexplicably discontinued shortly after its 1998 release. ~ All Music Guide HERE

GOTTHARD - One Team One Spirit: The Very Best (2004)
Gotthard, a Swiss hard rock band that sings in English, are one of the most successful musical acts ever to arise from Switzerland. Gotthard sold over two million albums worldwide, one million of them sold in Switzerland alone (a country of less than eight million inhabitants, keep in mind), as practically all of the band's albums were Swiss chart-toppers. Gotthard were also popular in Germany, where the band's albums regularly charted. Formed in Lugano, a town in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino in the far south of Switzerland, the band was initially named Krak and was comprised of vocalist Steve Lee, guitarist Leo Leoni, bassist Marc Lynn, and drummer Hena Habegger. Under the guidance of Krokus bassist/songwriter/founder Chris von Rohr, the band changed its name to Gotthard (a name derived from Saint Gotthard, a Roman Catholic saint after which the well-known St. Gotthard Pass in Switzerland was named) and signed a recording contract with BMG.With von Rohr at the helm as their producer and co-songwriter, the band went about recording its debut, Gotthard (1992). In addition to von Rohr, Lee and Leoni were the primary songwriters, and Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell played on two songs ("Firedance," "Get Down"). Gotthard spawned a pair of MTV-aired videos ("Hush," "All I Care For") and spent 15 weeks on the Swiss chart, peaking at number five and ultimately earning platinum status. After some international touring, Gotthard returned to the studio with von Rohr once again at the helm as producer/co-songwriter, resulting in Dial Hard (1994), the band's second album. Even more successful than Gotthard, Dial Hard spent several weeks at number one in Switzerland, charted in Germany and Japan, and ultimately went platinum, thanks in part to MTV-aired videos for "Mountain Mama" and "I'm on My Way."......... - allmusic.com

ROKY ERICKSON - I Have Always Been Here Before: The Roky Erickson Anthology (2005) ![]()
![]()
![]()
Roky Erickson is an American singer, songwriter, harmonica player and guitarist from Texas. He was a founding member of the 13th Floor Elevators and pioneer of the psychedelic rock genre. "I Have Always Been Here Before" is the kind of anthology fans only dream about a beautifully designed 43-track overview of an entire career. And not just any career, but that of an incredibly talented - if troubled - musician whose legacy has been ill served by a bewildering array of semi-legitimate releases. Enter the Roky Erickson Trust, established to provide for his well being and secure his artistic reputation. This Trust-approved collection spans 30 years and includes selections from the Spades, the 13th Floor Elevators, and solo Roky. Highlights from the latter include the unhinged "Don't Shake Me Lucifer," tender "You Don't Love Me Yet," and the haunting title track (but alas, no "I Walked With a Zombie").
Roky Erickson is one of the most influential cult artists of all time. His work with the ’60s Texas group The 13th Floor Elevators bridged garage rock and psychedelia, and cast a long shadow over the punk and post-punk movements. After a 1969 drug bust, the already mentally fragile Roky chose a stay in a mental institution instead of doing jail time, but was subjected to electroshock therapy and emerged in a highly unstable condition. He continued to write brilliant, chilling songs throughout the ’70s and ’80s, and the cult around him grew. In 1990 he was honored with an acclaimed tribute album, Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye, featuring R.E.M., ZZ Top, and Primal Scream. This led to a revival of his fortunes, which included new releases made in conjunction with Charlie Sexton and Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers.

Nicholas Rodney "Nick" Drake (1948 – 1974) was an English singer-songwriter and musician best known for his haunting, acoustic, autumnal songs. His primary instrument was the guitar, though he was also proficient at piano, clarinet, and saxophone. Although he failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime, Drake's work has grown steadily in stature, to the extent that he now ranks among the most influential English singer-songwriters of the last 50 years.
With unprecedentedly crisp quality, we're given masterfully orchestrated folk-rock ("Hazey Jane II," "Northern Sky"), bleak, strikingly minimalist, haiku-like solo-acoustic pieces ("Pink Moon," "Black Eyed Dog"), and lush, mournfully elegant ballads ("River Man," "Way to Blue"). Throughout, Drake's hushed, breathy voice, nimble Joao Gilberto-meets-John Fahey guitar work, and hauntingly beautiful lyricism shine through, making it clear why this doomed troubadour's slim repertoire has been revisited so many times over the years. Scanning the cover and track listing of Pedernales/FreeFalls' Honky Tonk Heroes it's hard to tell what this collection credited to Billy Joe Shaver, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson actually is. Is it a various-artist compilation, a live effort or re-recordings? Well, it's the closest to re-recordings, but that term implies a shoddy rip-off, which is certainly what this album is not. Released in 1999 but consisting primarily of recordings that were cut in Willie Nelson's studio, Pedernales, in 1989 when Shaver was recording with his son, guitarist Eddie. As the recording progressed, Shaver started hauling out such classic songs as "Ain't No God in Mexico," "You Asked Me To," "I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal," and "Easy Come Easy Go (aka Ride Me Down Easy)," with first Willie sitting in, singing, and playing, then Waylon and Kristofferson as well. Each vocalist traded verses and Nelson and Eddie Shaver traded guitar solos. The recordings were easy and relaxed, but filled with nuance and passion. These are songs the musicians have played countless times, but it's clear that they still love the tunes and anyone that's come to love Shaver's songs, whether it's through his recordings or Willie, Waylon, or Kristofferson's, will likely find this to be quite charming. Not really a major album, but an enjoyable one for old five and dimers nonetheless. ~ All Music Guide HERE

RORY GALLAGHER- Crest Of A Wave: The Best Of Rory Gallagher (2009)
The latest compilation of Rory Gallagher’s music is a true testament to his influence on such artists like Slash, Brian May, and Eric Clapton. For anyone who is not familiar with Rory Gallagher’s work, "Crest of a Wave" is a must-have. Gritty blues oozes out of each tune, only rivaled by the steady rock undercurrent heard in the music as well. Gallagher’s nephew emphasized that the core songwriting should always take precedence, and that’s a completely understandable statement. But let’s be honest: It’s damn hard to not be easily wowed by the guitar techniques that you’ll hear throughout the 2 disks. Just the slide work alone with make you a believer.

"Walk That Walk, Talk That Talk" is a 1991 studio album by Texas based Blues Rock band The Fabulous Thunderbirds and the first without guitarist Jimmie Vaughan. Thunderbirds cornerstone Jimmie Vaughan is replaced here by two notable figures from the New England blues scene, guitarists Duke Robillard and Kid Bangham. Stars of the show, their interweaved guitar textures are never flashy, always inventive, and, most importantly, they rock. The problem with this record is songwriting. Leader Kim Wilson seems obsessed with writing soul-type metaphors about how big his love is, but when placed next to a real example of this, like Sam and Dave's "Ain't That a Lot of Love," they pale in comparison. A cover of Junior Parker's John Lee Hooker interpolation "Feelin' Good" is excellent. HERE

STEVE MARRIOTT & THE DT'S - Sing The Blues Live (2000)
Steve Marriott (1947-1991) was a successful and versatile English blue-eyed soul, singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is best remembered for his uniquely powerful voice and aggressive guitar in groups Small Faces (1965-1969) and Humble Pie (1969-1975). In England, Marriott became a popular often photographed mod style icon through his role as lead singer and guitarist with the Small Faces in the mid to late sixties. Marriott's music was influenced from an early age by his heroes Buddy Holly, Booker T & the MG's, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Muddy Waters, Bobby Bland and later the Rolling Stones. Marriott posthumously received an Ivor Novello Award in 1996 for his Outstanding Contribution to British Music and listed in Mojo magazine as one of the top 100 greatest singers of all time. HERE

MICK RONSON - Slaughter On 10th Avenue (1974)
Mick Ronson (1946 – 1993) was an English guitarist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, arranger and producer. He is most well known for his work with David Bowie from 1970 to 1973, Bowie's glam rock period, including being part of The Spiders from Mars band. Mick Ronson's music career covered an impressive range: guitarist, solo performer, writer, arranger, and producer. The list of artists he worked with is equally impressive, and forms a Who's Who of popular music ... including David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Ian Hunter, Van Morrison, John Mellencamp, Morrissey, Elton John, Lou Reed, Roger McGuinn, Meatload, David Johansen and Roger Daltrey, just to name a few.
He also had a solo career, the most notable example of which was his Slaughter On 10th Avenue album, that reached No 9 on the UK album charts. Ronson also guested on various different bands' releases after his time with Bowie. He was named the 64th greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone. HERE

FIONA BOYES - Blues Woman (2009)
Midwest Record Recap provocatively sested Australian singer/guitarist Fiona Boyes "sounds like Bonnie Raitt's evil twin," a comment as insightful as it was amusing. Boyes does, in fact, have a strong Raitt influence (with elements of Marcia Ball and Rory Block), but her approach is noticeably darker, swampier, and more mysterious than Raitt's. One of the great things about BLUES WOMAN is the fact that she is so hard to pin down stylistically. The Aussie is blues-oriented -- that much is clear -- but during the course of this album, she embraces everything from electric Chicago blues on the Howlin' Wolf-influenced "Howlin' at Your Door" to early R&B (of the late-'40s/early-'50s variety) on "Do You Feel Better?" to blues-soul on "Train to Hopesville" and "Waiting for Some Good News." Fiona Boyes is a one-woman blues tent revival. Her pulpit is the stage, which she commands with the energy of an entire flock of worshippers. And her Bible is the guitar. With her acoustic and electric virtuosity and mastery of styles, she uses it as a righteous instrument to uphold the music’s tradition, even as her strong, distinctive songwriting moves it forward. And Blues Woman, Boyes’ second album for Yellow Dog Records, is one mighty powerful sermon. Its 15 songs run a rollicking trip through the contemporary blues landscape — from Chicago to Texas to Mississippi’s hill country and the Delta, all evocatively conjured by Boyes’ and producer Mark “Kaz” Kazanoff’s true-to-the-bone arrangements.Recorded in Austin TX, with a full band including special guests Marcia Ball, Pinetop Perkins, and Watermelon Slim, Blues Woman manifests the soulful, authoritative style of this native Australian and three-time Blues Music Award nominee to full effect. - cduniverse.com

JOHN MAYALL - Tough (2009)
"Tough" is the new studio album from John Mayall, his sixth for Eagle Records, and is well titled with a harder hitting feel and a real edge that sets it apart from his recent albums. After a long period with a stable line-up of the Bluesbreakers, "Tough" sees Mayall working with a new group of musicians that has clearly revitalised him and acted as a spur to his creativity. Now approaching his 76th birthday, Mayall shows no sign of slowing down and will spend much of 2009 touring Europe and America with the new band. Affectionately regarded as the "Godfather of British Blues", Mayall’s influence on the genre cannot be overestimated in a career stretching back to the mid-sixties that has nurtured the talents of Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Coco Montoya, Aynsley Dunbar, Walter Trout and Buddy Whittington amongst many others. In a genre that has always cherished experience "Tough" proves that John Mayall still has what it takes. HERE

A companion to their near simultaneously released The EP Boxset, EMI/Parlophone's The CD Singles Collection released on Parlophone in 1995, EMI in 1999 is a set targeted at collectors who are looking for CD replicas of the Beatles' 22 British singles. Each of the 22 CDs in this set is housed in a replica of the original artwork and contains no more than the original Aside and the original Bside, which doesn't make for practical listening, but practicality isn't the point of the set, collectability is. On that level this is a pretty nice package, as it offers attractive picture sleeves and gives an idea what it was like to hear these singles come out one after another. - All Music Guide
Euro only 22 cd box set of of the singles the Beatles released in the UK between 1962 and 1970 . They are packaged in cardboard replica sleeves with cover art from the 7" singles that were re-released in the 80s. This is the only way to get some of the original mono 7" mixes; that were noticably different from the original LP mixes; on CD. A must for any Beatles collector. HERE

Gary Moore's classic live album "We Want Moore!" is about as good as it gets. Drawing mainly from the Irish guitarist's previous two studio albums, every cut gets a shot in the arm from Moore's extended soloing, most notably the Yardbird's "Shapes of Things" at almost nine minutes. Recorded in places as distant as Tokyo, Glasgow and Detroit, the performances also benefit from the impressive vocal tag team between Moore and rhythm guitarist Neil Carter.HERE

Jeff Beck has made many strange albums, but none were ever quite as strange as this. With the Big Town Playboys offering support, Beck rips through 18 Gene Vincent numbers (not "Be-Bop-a-Lula," however), paying tribute to Vincent's guitarist, Cliff Gallup. Beck sounds terrific as he reconstructs Gallup's parts, but he doesn't add anything to the originals. Still, Crazy Legs is a fun listen and offers many insights into Beck's playing, if not Gallup's. ~ All Music Guide HERE

Beyond the tragedy, the history, the raging guitars and the killer songs, ultimately, Lynyrd Skynyrd is about an indomitable will. About survival of spirit; unbowed, uniquely American, stubbornly resolute. With their first set of new studio material since 2003’s Vicious Cycle, legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd returns with "God & Guns", due out September 29 on Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records. Recorded in Nashville in 2008-2009, the project was interrupted—but, tellingly, not ended—by the deaths of founding member/keyboardist Billy Powell and longtime bassist Ean Evans earlier this year. MICHAEL BLOOMFIELD with NICK GRAVENITES and friends - Live At Bill Graham's Fillmore West 1969 (2009)
When Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites were recorded by Columbia at the Fillmore West in early 1969, most of the tracks the label released appeared on Live at Bill Graham's Fillmore West 1969. However, not a little additional material from the same source appeared on one side of Gravenites' My Labors LP. Raven's CD reissue of Live at Bill Graham's Fillmore West 1969 sensibly takes advantage of the extra space afforded by the CD format to add four of those live Fillmore West tracks from My Labors as bonuses, though space restrictions meant that the fifth and final such cut from My Labors, the jam "Wintry Country Side," couldn't fit. This set doesn't contain the most notable of Bloomfield's recordings; it's not the best band he played with, nor is it the best material with which he had to work. It's best appreciated as one of numerous releases on which to hear his reliably accomplished blues-rock guitar work, although it's not as flashy or inventive as his best performances, the arrangements sometimes recalling Electric Flag due to the presence of a horn section. No less than four vocalists (Gravenites, Bloomfield, Bob Jones, and Taj Mahal, who guests on "One More Mile to Go") were featured on the original Live at Bill Graham's Fillmore West 1969 LP; this expanded version does give more weight to Gravenites' singing, as he takes lead on all four of the tracks added from My Labors. As a final bonus, the CD also includes a Bloomfield-sung cover of Ray Charles' "Mary Ann" from another Bloomfield live album of the era (The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper), as well as historical liner notes. ~ All Music Guide HERE

RYAN ADAMS & THE CARDINALS - Cold Roses (2005)
"Cold Roses" is the sixth studio album by alt-country singer-songwriter Ryan Adams, released on May 3, 2005 on Lost Highway. The album is his first with backing band The Cardinals, and the first of three albums released in 2005. "Cold Roses" is the only album to include Cardinals member Cindy Cashdollar.
Like most of Adams's efforts, this album is polished, assured, and pleasurable, with strong songwriting at the fore throughout. The opener, "Magnolia Mountain," sets the tone - a warm, back-porch vibe tinged with melancholy and buoyed by Adams's emotive warble. Sometimes Adams downshifts to straight folk ("Rosebud"); at other times, he is more pop-minded ("Cherry Lane"), while mixing in simple, swaying melodies ("When Will You Come Back Home") and the occasional blues-based rocker ("Beautiful Sorta"). Despite the stylistic variations, "Cold Roses" is extremely cohesive, and represents a welcome return to Adams's early sound. HERE
Ryan Adams & The Cardinals: Ryan Adams (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harmonica, piano); Cindy Cashdollar (vocals, steel guitar, lap steel guitar, resonator guitar); Catherine Popper (vocals, piano, bass guitar); Brad Pemberton (vocals, drums); J.P. Bowersock (guitar).

BLACK SABBATH - Live At Last (1980)
"Live at Last" is a live album by Black Sabbath. Despite its wide distribution, it was released without any permission or knowledge from the band, and is thus considered "unofficial" in some quarters. However, the release was legal (albeit unapproved by the band, as stated) within Europe and ads were carried in the UK music press. In the US it was available only as an import. The album was included when the Sabbath albums were issued on CD in Europe by Castle Communications in 1986 and again in remastered and repackaged form in the label's 1996 Remaster series. The vinyl version and the first CD issue feature the spoken intro of, 'Will you welcome... BLACK SABBATH!' which, oddly, would be edited from the remaster and "Past Lives". It should also be noted that the remaster was not a remix and there is no apparent audio difference between that and the original issues. The release was compiled from two March 1973 recordings made for an intended live album but, being unhappy with the results, the band shelved that project indefinitely. However, former manager Patrick Meehan arranged the release in 1980, on the NEMS label. The band eventually came to acknowledge the recording, and released the whole album as part of the two disc live compilation Past Lives in 2002. The recording is still noted for its early pre-album version of "Killing Yourself to Live", and the long "Wicked World" medley jam. Live at Last was also significant in that its initial release in 1980 prompted Black Sabbath to finally record their first official live album, 1982's Live Evil with Ronnie James Dio. All tracks were recorded at the Hardrock in Manchester, England on March 11, 1973 and the Rainbow Theatre in London, England on March 16, 1973: it is not known from which concert the individual tracks arose, as this is not stated on the original release and there are, to date, no known ROIO for comparison. It is, however, not unreasonable to assume that the tracks comprising each side come from the same night.” HERE
