V.A. - It Ain’t Over! 55 Years of Blues (2009)

"It Ain’t Over! 55 Years of Blues" is the latest compilation from Delmark Records, Chicago’s pre-eminent blues and jazz records label. Delmark is owned by Bob Koester, who’s the founder and the man still at the helm, steering the course of his creation through thick and thin, good times and bad. It Ain’t Over! is a just under 64-minute collection of 11 great blues songs by some of the cream of Delmark’s crop that have been issued over the years. Delmark began an increased recruitment of blues musicians in 1965, shortly after releasing “Junior Wells now classic Hoodoo Man Blues, a full-bore blast of modern urban juke joint revelry at its most potent [from liner notes].” Since then, Bob hasn’t messed with success. He’s kept that legacy alive in as many of Delmark’s recordings as possible. Why change a winning recipe? It Ain’t Over! was recorded live March 7, 2008, at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago, which is why you’ll see some of the same players moving in and out of the lineup throughout, including Bob Stroger on bass; Kenny Smith, son of legendary drummer Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith, on drums, natch; Roosevelt ‘The Mad Hatter’ Purifoy on keys; and Lurrie Bell on guitar. Is that the first string of current Chicago Blues royalty, or what? On this CD, Bob features eight different artists from his stable giving their best on juke joint style blues – barebones, stripped down, just enough musicians to get the sound you want and like. Zora Young kicks off this album with “Til the Fat Lady Sings,” a rousing seven-minute-plus number, the longest on the disc, with backing by – drum roll! – Lurrie Bell and Scott Cable on guitar, and Purifoy, Stroger and Smith. With a powerhouse blues belter like Zora Young, you need some cruiser-weight heavies to stand up to her punches, and they’re here, tall and strong. This booming kickoff is followed by a sad, tear-jerking “Low Low Down,” by Jimmy Johnson. When he sings of the “ice around my heart,” you can feel it. That emotion follows throughout the entire 5:37 of this ballad.

TOMMY CASTRO - Hard Believer (2009)

You might think that Castro's first album recorded for mighty blues indie Alligator - and twelfth overall - would mark a departure for this longtime rocking soulman. But despite a fuller sound, fleshed out with Lenny Castro's percussion and boosted by an ever-present horn section led by longtime cohort Keith Crossan, this is another typically solid effort from the singer/guitarist. Veteran producer/musician John Porter returns to join Castro's strong, husky vocals - a cross between Delbert McClinton, James Brown, and Bob Seger - to a rather slick, radio-friendly approach. It's a marked change from Castro's anything-goes concerts where the songs are tightly rehearsed, yet open for improvisation. Still, when the singer dives into the slow blues of "Backup Plan," all the pieces fit, and Castro's John Fogerty-styled vocals rip into the tune with the kind of aggression generally missing from the musical backing. Covers of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" and the Righteous Brothers' rollicking "My Babe" bring out the inherent Memphis R&B grease of the former and the churchy fun of the latter without messing with the original concepts. Even better is Allen Toussaint's "Victims of the Darkness," a 1972 gem that benefits from Castro's sympathetic reading. Blues lovers hope the journeyman performer will someday break into the mainstream, and perhaps albums like this one will hasten that. - cduniverse.com HERE

DAVID GOGO - Different Views (2009)

For his 10th album, Different Views, blues rocker David Gogo definitely had some unique sights to inspire him during the recording process. Instead of the usual confines of your typical recording studio, the bulk of the album was recorded at his home - overlooking the 160-acre Christmas tree farm and forest that make up the Gogo family compound. The keyboard tracks were recorded at Rick Hopkins’ (Colin James, Barney Bentall) home overlooking breath-taking Lions Bay, British Columbia. The album is produced by Russell Broom (Jann Arden, Sam Roberts, The Dudes, Wil) with guests Shaun Verrault (Wide Mouth Mason), roots diva Carolyn Mark, and jazz great Phil Dwyer popping in at various times. With the drums set up in the foyer and guitar amps in the laundry room, the Gogo house was filled with music and good food. At times, Gogo wasn’t sure if he was a musician or a caterer! The fact that the clock wasn’t ticking, along with Gogo’s vast collection of vinyl albums, vintage guitars and pop culture memorabilia at their fingertips encouraged a stimulating creative environment. This combination has added variety and spice unlike previous Gogo efforts without losing focus of what he’s all about. - davidgogo.org HERE

JIM KEAVENY - Music Man (2009) thumbup

Jim Keaveny's lates effort 'Music Man' is a slice of American folk music that is not to be missed. It combines the wit of Townes, the urgency of Guthrie and the ability to paint images in the listener's mind of Dylan into a package that is uniquely his own. It blazes the path for many new folk singers to follow. - thealternateroot.com

The modern day drifter, untamed…the ‘maverick’ in the traditional use of the word. They hop freight trains and wander the landscape busking from town to town. The muse is the common man, the downtrodden, the lonely, the forgotten. Their music, their stories, are timeless and in hard times urgent warnings of the storms ahead. Think Woody Guthrie, Townes Van Zandt, Pete Seeger…Bob Dylan. Jim Keaveny's lates effort 'Music Man' is a slice of American folk music that is not to be missed. It is all of these things and more. It is a voice that, while vanishing in the “on demand” world we have created, demands to be heard. It blazes a new path for many new American folk singers to follow. HERE

DR HOOK & THE MEDICINE SHOW - The Very Best Of (2000)

Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show's sardonic, country-flavored pop/rock made them one of the most fondly remembered acts of AM pop radio's heyday in the '70s. Although the band had a reputation as a mouthpiece for humorist Shel Silverstein, who supplied several of their biggest hits (including "The Cover of Rolling Stone"), they didn't rely exclusively on his material by any means. And, during their peak years, they were just as famed for their crazed stage antics, which ranged from surreal banter to impersonating their own opening acts. This is a compilation of the 3 albums Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show released in the early 1970s. Almost all of their tracks are Shel Silverstein compositions with witty, irreverent humoristic lyrics, folk style vocals by Ray Sawyer (Dr. Hook) and country-rock backup. Next to the wellknown Sylvia's mother and Cover of the Rolling Stone are other great tracks such as Marie Lavaux, The ballad of Lucy Jordan, Freakin' at the freakers ball, Roland the roadie... and Judy. STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN - Alpine Valley (1990)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

Stevie Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 – August 27 1990) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter, whose broad appeal made him an influential electric blues guitarist. To date, a total of 18 albums of Vaughan's work have been released. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Stevie Ray Vaughan #7 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and Classic Rock Magazine ranked him #3 in their list of the 100 Wildest Guitar Heroes in 2007.

To complete the summer portion of the "In Step" tour, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble played two shows on August 25 & 26 at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI, while on tour with Eric Clapton. For travel to the next venue, the tour manager reserved four helicopters to circumvent congested highway traffic. In very dense fog, the helicopters were clear for lift-off at 12:40 A.M. Just past the lift-off zone was a 300-foot hill. Vaughan's helicopter pilot was unfamiliar with the flight pattern for exiting the area, and did not climb to sufficient altitude immediately after take-off. Vaughan's helicopter veered off to one side and crashed into the hill. According to the findings as reported by the National Transportation Safety Board, the cause of the accident was determined to be inadequate planning by the pilot, and failure to attain sufficient altitude to clear an obstacle. Fog and haze, as well as the rising terrain were listed as contributing factors. All occupants including Vaughan, the pilot and three members of Eric Clapton's travel group were killed on impact. On August 31, 1990, funeral services were held for Vaughan in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas. Brother Jimmie, mother Martha, and girlfriend Janna were in attendance. Among the mourners were all three members of ZZ Top, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Wonder, and Jackson Browne. Vaughan was interred at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Oak Cliff, a part of Dallas, Texas.

The Essential (2002)

Epic's The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble gathers two discs' worth of the late blues guitarist's work, including many live performances and a few tracks with the Vaughan Brothers. The collection presents Vaughan's material in roughly chronological order, from the 1980 live recording "Shake for Me" to 1989's "Life by the Drop." It also touches on most of Vaughan's definitive songs and performances, including "Tightrope," "Wall of Denial," "Couldn't Stand the Weather," and "Cold Shot," and live versions of "The Sky Is Crying," "Superstition," and "Rude Mood/Hide Away." Though this album doesn't offer anything that hasn't already been released in some form or another, it does go into slightly more depth than several of the other Stevie Ray Vaughan retrospectives by presenting both his greatest studio hits and some of his best live work. ~ All Music Guide HERE

STEVE EARLE AND THE DEL McCOURY BAND - The Mountain (1999)

13. Long, Lonesome Highway Blues
14. Pilgrim

When country-rock icon Steve Earle teamed with blazing bluegrass act the Del McCoury Band, the result was more invigoratingly intense than even die-hard fans could have imagined. These energetic songs somehow sound innovative and timeless at the same time, merging the finest, first-person-narrated politico tunes of Springsteen or Dylan with the plaintive, hard-driving mountain wails of the Stanley Brothers and Bill Monroe. Even if it does begin with a jokey incantation of the Mickey Mouse theme song ("M-I-C-K-E-Y..."), The Mountain is Steve Earle's most traditional album, pairing country rock's most notorious miscreant with the best working band in bluegrass. Earle was inspired by a chance meeting with the late bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe, and this is his self-declared stab at musical immortality. It is easy to imagine these 14 songs sounding as good 40 years from now as they do today. The mood varies widely from triple-time breakdowns to bluesy shuffles to meditative waltzes, but there's not a missed note or strained chorus anywhere. As Earle states at the outset, "If you want to be in the band, you have to put your hat on," and the one he's wearing, at least figuratively, is 10 gallon-plus. - amazon.com

Primarily working with bass, drum and piano, the smoky-voiced chanteuse delivers these eleven songs with her own inimitably laidback vigor, performing best on moody ballads such as "Am I Blue," "Mean To Me" and "The Man I Love." Some of these tracks have appeared on Rita's albums during her A&M Records tenure in the 1970s, but most of them remained in the vault until now. It's a fine set with simple arrangements of chestnuts such as "Bring It On Home To Me" and the blues staple "Stormy Monday." Rounding the set out are two recent cuts, the Top 40-ish "When The Night Rolls In" and the bluesy "Out of the Blues." ~ All Music Guide

CANNED HEAT - Live In Concert: Woodstock - 10th Anniversary Celebration (2008)

01. On the Road Again
02. Bullfrog Blues
03. Chicken Shack Boogie
04. Stand Up (For What You Are)
05. Going Up the Country
06. Don't Know Where She Went (She Split)
07. Human Condition
08. Shake 'n' Boogie
09. Christmas Blues (from 'The Canned Heat Christmas Album')
10. Let's Work Together (from 'Friends In The Can')

There have easily been half-a-dozen releases derived from this late-'70s reunion of the venerable psychedelic/blues band Canned Heat. Setting this package apart from King Biscuit Flower Hour's Greatest Hits Live or the DTS 5.1 DVD version From the Front Row Live (2003) is the inclusion of two "bonus" tracks - which will be expounded upon momentarily. The specific performance featured within the main program is rare in the sense that it is one of the only available to boast a short-lived lineup lead by Canned Heat veterans Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass/vocals), Bob "The Bear" Hite (harmonica/vocals), and Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra (drums), with Mike "Hollywood Fats" Mann (guitar) and Jay Spell (piano). The band's September 7, 1979 set was part of a larger celebration held in Brookhaven, NY and marking the tenth anniversary of the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair. Suitably, the combo churns through a handful of the better-known selections that have become synonymous with their initial fame as boogie-based rockers during the late '60s. Primary among them are "On the Road Again" and the back to nature anthem "Goin' Up the Country" - the latter having been used prominently in the Woodstock (1970) motion picture documentary and subsequent soundtrack. As such, each is met with enthusiastic responses from the gathered masses. Slightly deeper into their decade-old repertoire are sturdy updates of Amos Milburn's Crescent City soul classic "Chicken Shack Boogie" as well as William Harris' "Bullfrog Blues." The lengthy workout on "Human Conditions" - the title track to their most recent long player - is recommended listening for inclined parties, as is the hard-driving closer "Shake 'n' Boogie" as the band turn up the fire into a full-blown revival of the incendiary style that garnered their initial notoriety. The aforementioned supplementary sides are the incongruous additions of "Let's Work Together" and the seasonal offering "Christmas Blues." Although they are both worth having, neither seems to have a specific connection to the 1979 concert. ~ All Music Guide

ARETHA FRANKLIN - The Very Best Of Aretha Franklin: The '60s (1994)

LITTLE JIMMY KING

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

Memphis-based left-handed guitar player Little Jimmy King was one of the most exciting blues players to emerge on the scene in the 1990s. King was born December 4, 1968, as Manuel Gales but renamed himself for his two favorite guitar heroes, Jimi Hendrix and Albert King. He got started as a rock & roller, but by the mid-'80s had switched to blues. By 1988, he had left the Memphis blues scene to go on the road with his hero as part of Albert King's band. The late Albert King called Little Jimmy his grandson, and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan also had high praise for the young guitarist. In a moment King will never forget, Vaughan told him: "Play on, brother, you've got it. Don't stop playing for nobody."

King's self-titled debut was released in 1991 on the Rounder Bullseye Blues label, and he followed it up in 1994 with Something Inside of Me, on which he's accompanied by former Double Trouble bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris "Whipper" Layton. King can also be heard playing guitar on Ann Peebles's Full Time Love and Otis Clay's I'll Treat You Right and On My Way Home. King's 1995 record with his two guitar playing brothers, Eric Gales and Eugene Gales, Left Hand Brand was released by the House of Blues label in 1995. While the brothers often played gigs together, Left Hand Brand is the only album they made. In 1997 King released his third record for Bullseye Blues, the Willie Mitchell produced Soldier For the Blues.

Little Jimmy King died suddenly on July 19, 2002 after suffering a heart attack at the young age of 34. King's live shows, as documented on 2002's Live at Monterey, like his three highly praised studio recordings for Bullseye Blues, were full of fire and fury, passionate guitar playing within the context of his band, the Memphis Soul Survivors, great vocals and clever songs. His presence and playing are sure to be missed. - answers.com

Something Inside Of Me (1994) @VBR [V0]

Little Jimmy King's second Bullseye/Rounder session matches the slashing guitarist with the rhythm section that once backed Stevie Ray Vaughan. King soars on these 11 cuts; while he lacks Vaughan's speed and is more a straight blues technician, he plays with more imagination and drive than on his debut. He contributes six originals and does a competent job of reworking material by Elmore James, Albert King, and even Phil Collins. While there's nothing here startling or surprising, King effectively teams with Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon, and producer/organist Ron Levy crafts an entertaining program of contemporary blues-rock with vintage sensibilities and overtones.

Live At B.B. Kings, LA (2008) @320

Until his untimely death in 2002, guitarist Little Jimmy King was keeping electric blues alive, specializing in Memphis-style blues and drawing inspiration from his mentors, Jimi Hendrix and Albert King (the two artists from whom he took his stage name). LIVE AT B.B. KING'S, L.A., finds the young six-string slinger tearing through a set of amped-up, Southern-fried barnburners with a band that rises to the occasion. The focus, naturally, is on King's voice, his appealing tunes, and his fiery, impassioned playing.

THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS - Powerful Stuff (1989)

With their fusion of blues, rock & roll, and R&B, the Fabulous Thunderbirds helped popularize roadhouse Texas blues with a mass audience in the '80s and, in the process, they helped kick-start a blues revival during the mid-'80s. During their heyday in the early '80s, they were the most popular attraction on the blues bar circuit, which eventually led to a breakthrough to the pop audience in 1986 with their fifth album, Tuff Enuff. The mass success didn't last too long, and founding member Jimmie Vaughan left in 1990, but the Fabulous Thunderbirds remained one of the most popular blues concert acts in America during the '90s.

V.A. - Woodstock: 40 Years On: Back to Yasgur's Farm (2009)

Much has been written about the significance of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair as a cultural event. Ironically, what has been least examined up to now is the very thing that brought nearly half a million together in 1969: the music itself. As the historic festival marks its 40-year anniversary, Rhino presents WOODSTOCK: 40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR'S FARM, six-CD collection that features the most comprehensive collection ever available of artists that performed at the original festival, sequenced in chronological order of performance, featuring previously unreleased recordings, including the Grateful Dead, The Who, Tim Hardin, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & The Fish, and others. To assemble the most comprehensive document of the myth-steeped weekend, the boxed set's co-producer Andy Zax pored over every inch of multitrack tape in search of the strongest parts of each of the 33 sets. "The way we approached all of the material was as if it was a cinéma verité documentary - the raw record of the event," Zax says. In addition to the music, the set offers considerable amount of ancillary material sprinkled throughout the discs - stage announcements, lysergic babble, the sounds of rain, a cameo appearance by Abbie Hoffman, and the graciousness of Max Yasgur's address to the crowd, heard for the first time in its entirety. Another significant byproduct of WOODSTOCK: 40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR'S FARM is that, by virtue of its size and rigorously chronological sequence, it gets closer to a sense of the performances as they occurred in real time than any previous compilation. For the first time, the complete and accurate set lists will be available in the boxed set's booklet. Some Woodstock aficionados will be taken aback by the actual order of the performances; it differs from both various written accounts and from Michael Wadleigh's film Woodstock, which takes certain liberties with chronology in order to maintain its narrative flow.

Fairly often I come across someone who has the idea that "The blues are dead!" I've always responded by playing some great music for them--music by newer artists like Albert Castiglia, Ruthie Foster, Dave Gross, the Insomniacs. Well, I have a new disc to add to that list-J P Soars' "Back Of My Mind." J P hails from Boca Raton Florida, and he surely has the chops--he & his band, The Red Hots, won the 2009 IBC in Memphis last February, and he also won the Albert King award there as best guitarist. So it is comes as no surprise that "Back Of My Mind" is a fine cd, with a full compliment of great swinging guitar moments. Soars is joined here by A J Kelly on bass, and Chris Peet on drums. Together, this trio makes up J P Soars And The Red Hots. Other musicians on the project include: Gary Rimmington on electric and upright bass, Terry Hanck on saxophone, Billy Burns on harmonica, Greg Kingsolver on piano, John Epstein on Hammond organ, and Guillermo Lojo on backup vocals. Four of the songs are J P Soars originals, and they fit in quite well with a wide-ranging batch of cool covers, including T Bone Walker's "Low Dirty Deal," Reverend Gary Davis's "Cocaine," J B Lenoir's "Been Down So Long," and Johnny Guitar Watson's "Gangster Of Love." My favorite tracks are the superb Muddy Waters' "Gypsy Woman," with great guitar work, and the original "Baby I Used To Love You" which features an old-timey acoustic feel. The focus throughout the disc is on the whole band, playing music as an ensemble, and some great solos are taken by sax ace Terry Hanck or harp ace Billy Burns. Soars brings the great guitar playing that he is known for, and his singing is pretty good too. I'm not sure we really needed another cover of Willie Dixon's "29 Ways" but that's just a quibble. Guitarist, lyricist, and vocalist John Earl Walker became enamored with the blues at age 13, after being exposed to records by legendary guitarists of the genre such as Albert King, Magic Sam, T-Bone Walker, and Freddie King. By his 16th birthday, Walker had already begun playing guitar at local events and in clubs whenever possible. In 1967 he formed the blues-rock band the Plastic People, which included bassist Pete Harris and guitarist Joey Tremelo. Three years later Plastic People changed their name to Creedmore State, then to Plum Nelly when they signed with Capitol Records in 70 and recorded one album for them in '71, they gained national exposure opening shows for B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Alice Cooper, and Iggy Pop, to name just a few. The Plum Nelly lp is now a very rare and sought after collectors item! Following the breakup of Plum Nelly in 1976, Walker formed the first of several incarnations of the John Earl Walker Band. Walker then released his debut CD, I'm Leavin' You, in 2002, followed by Little Miss Perfect and People Are Talkin' two years later. All three discs are available on the New York-based Walkright Records label. John toured Australia in 2006, playing with many of the top players down under. John Earl Walker, and Peter Harris were both original members of Capitol Records recording artists Plum Nelly. HERE

MARK KNOPFLER - The Ragpicker's Dream (2002)

With his second post-millennium album in just two years, Mark Knopfler has already equaled his meager (non-soundtrack) output for the '90s. And while he isn't reinventing himself, The Ragpicker's Dream is a pleasant, classy, often inspired effort whose unassuming charms are best appreciated after repeated listenings. The memorable riffage that fueled Dire Straits' most radio-friendly material has been discarded for a more pastoral approach, making this a perfect album for a rainy Sunday morning. Like his Notting Hillbillies side project, it isn't entirely unpled, yet there is an emphasis on acoustic accompaniment to its predominantly ballad slant. Instead of leaving space for traditional soloing, Knopfler weaves his snake-like guitar between the words. This infuses a tense, edgy quality in even the most bucolic tracks, resulting in the crackling but still low-boil atmospherics of "Hill Farmer's Blues" and "Fare Thee Well Northumberland." "Marbletown" is an unaccompanied folkblues that sounds as if Knopfler was born and raised in the Mississippi backwoods. He taps into the patented insistent lazy, shuffling groove on the spooky "You Don't Know You're Born." It's the most Straits-like track here featuring an extended, winding, yet subtle solo. "Coyote," a mid-tempo sizzler - lyrically based on the Road Runner cartoons -- is propelled by a walking bass figure and Knopfler's homey, lived-in, talk-sung vocals. Again, the guitar pyrotechnics are interspersed throughout the verses with overdubbed sounds employed to provide ambiance and mood. The authentic honky tonk swing of "Daddy's Gone to Knoxville" could have come off a Wayne Hancock album, and the "King of the Road" melody from "Quality Shoe" is a tribute to Roger Miller. As an homage to the American roots music he's always admired and a desire to retreat further from the stadium rock of his Straits days, The Ragpicker's Dream is a restrained success, at least on its own terms. It may not please some of Knopfler's old "Money for Nothing" fans, but at this stage, he's obviously not trying to. HERE

RINGO STARR - Photograph: The Very Best Of Ringo (2007)

When the Beatles broke up in 1970, it was assumed that John, Paul, and George would have successful solo careers. John's first solo album of popular music was released in 1969. McCartney's album was released the month that the Beatles broke up in April 1970. Harrison's album, Wonderwall Music, was released in 1968. It was uncertain if Ringo Starr would be successful as a solo artist. No one would question his drumming capabilities, or his acting abilities, but as a songwriter and vocalist, he was different than the other Beatles. First, his voice was much more of a baritone and didn't fit the pop mold. Second, he didn't write many songs as a Beatle. Sure he penned lines here and there. It has been said that he wrote the line "writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear" as well as "darning his socks" from the song Eleanor Rigby, but this does not constitute a classic like "Here Comes the Sun." Most of the songs that Starr did while in the Beatles were Lennon/McCartney songs that were written especially for his vocal range. Flash-forward over 35 years and not only did Ringo Starr have a solo career, but also one that has a best-of album with 20 songs. Even a couple of number one hits. In fact, with the release of his 1973 album Ringo, Starr was the most successful ex-Beatle at the time. "Photograph: The Very Best Of Ringo" is that best of album. HERE

THE JAYHAWKS - Music From The North Country (2009) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Pop music's road to riches is littered with the burnt out wrecks of bands like The Jayhawks. Somewhat overrated by many critics, their country rock charms somehow seemed pretty much lost on the Great American Public, and after six albums and two decades of strles and changing personnel, they called it a day. This lovingly compiled and annotated retrospective, (which also comes in a deluxe 3-disc edition featuring demos, out-takes etc, and videos) does a decent job of covering their entire career, and may well win them new fans. But it may just as easily sink ithout trace, too. We always thought we were doing something really original, declares their longest running member, singer Gary Louris in PD Larson's sleevenotes. In spite of this, their influences were mostly fairly obvious, with particular emphasis on Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers in the first phase of their career. The anthemic Trouble and Smile seem heavily indebted to The Hollies and The Beatles, and Tailspin sounds like a rewrite of The Byrds' version of Dylan's My Back Pages. Incidentally, their name was a sly homage to Bob's backing Band, originally called The Hawks. The trademark vocal harmony partnership of Mark Olsen and Gary Louris was sundered when Olsen unexpectedly left after their third album Tomorrrow The Green Grass. To his credit, Louris – a slightly less distinctive singer – soldiered on, with the newly recruited drummer Tim O'Regan taking the place of Olsen, who quit the band to make music with his wife Victoria Williams. There's even a song about her here – Miss Williams' Guitar. Big Star features the other most overtly biographical lyric, documenting the band's frustrations with their lack of commercial success, against one of their rockier arrangements: ''I couldn’t get arrested if I tried/…I'm gonna be a big star some day. It does seem cruel that The Jayhawks' highest placing on the Billboard album chart was number 52. Why, for instance, was a song as catchy as Blue not a huge hit? They were a good band, sometimes a very good band, though never, perhaps, a truly great one. HERE

The Nighthawks are an American blues and roots music band, based in Washington, D.C. The Nighthawks currently comprise Mark Wenner (harmonica), Paul Bell (lead guitar), Johnny Castle (bass guitar), and Pete Ragusa (drums). Formed in 1972, the Nighthawks underwent several personnel changes before stabilizing the lineup of Mark Wenner (harmonica), Jimmy Thackery (lead guitar), Jan Zukowski (bass guitar), and Pete Ragusa (drums).

In 1987, the band headed to Europe for a two week tour before taking some time off. A concert in Bremen was recorded and subsequently released by the Crosscut label as “Live in Europe.” In contrast to the album “Backtrack,” this one is a showcase of the core four man group that had done more than 3,000 shows in 15 years with almost no change in personnel. The album clearly shows that they had become a finely tuned, tight unit playing nothing less than great blues rock. This album also served to identify the end of an era as Jimmy Thackery moved on to pursue a solo career. But the album also served as a new beginning - as the band would take a break and chart a new course.

Here’s a terrific release, courtesy of Betsie Brown at Blind Raccoon in Memphis, of soulful blues from the San Diego-based Missy Andersen – Detroit-born and raised in Queens, New York – a short, but very sweet, eight tracks of classic soul and blues – mainly covers, but with a couple of original songs, all beautifully sung and the band delivering some great grooves! Influenced by her parents record collection, Missy Andersen grew up listening to the likes of Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, The Staple Singers and more, later picking up on O.V. Wright, Bobby Bland, James Carr, Ann Peebles, etc., before finding her own voice – and what an impressive voice it is!

STEPHEN STILLS - Turnin' Back The Pages (2003)

By 1975, with his throaty, almost plaintive voice and the edgy, thrusting guitar work, STEPHEN STILLS was unquestionably one of the most important figures in contemporary rock music. Over a decade on Atlantic he had notched up an indelible hit with Buffalo Springfield, three Number One group albums with CSN/CSNY, two Top Ten solo albums, and a Top Five album debut with Manassas. Signed to Columbia in 1975, he delivered three solo albums - beginning with the Top 20 Stills. These albums contained striking, accomplished and powerful rock, soul/blues, roots and country music. Culled from Stills, Illegal Stills and Thoroughfare Gap (which has never been on CD) this 22-track, 78-minute Digitally Remastered CD offers quality originals and covers of the Allman Brothers' "Midnight Rider" and Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away."Complete with two bonus tracks from the legendary 1968 Columbia Supersession album with Al Kooper.

The autobiographical thread running through Get Lucky is exemplified by the title track. “The first itinerant person I ever met would sing in soul bands in winter, then work part-time in fairgrounds or ‘go pick fruit down south’ when the weather turned warm,” explains Knopfler. “I was about 15 years old, stuck in school and envious. ‘Get Lucky’ came from him and other traveling characters I went on to meet in places I’d find myself working short-term, like farms, warehouses, building sites, before I got lucky with my songs.”

Willy DeVille (1950 - 2009) was an American singer and songwriter. First with his band Mink DeVille (1974–1985) and later on his own, DeVille in his 35-year career created songs that are wholly original yet rooted in traditional American musical styles. DeVille worked with collaborators from across the spectrum of contemporary music.

"Willy DeVille Live" is a live recording of Willy DeVille and the Mink DeVille Band. The recordings were made in June 16-17, 1993 at the Bottom Line in Greenwich Village, New York, and in October, 1993 at the Olympia Theatre in Paris. Willy DeVille Live was not released in the United States. According to Eagle Rock Entertainment, "The soul-chorus/brass mixture with its impressive orchestration assured the album the number one sales chart position in Spain." The album was dedicated to Steve Douglas, who played saxophone on the first three Mink DeVille albums and produced Le Chat Bleu. Douglas died shortly before the album came out.

CAT STEVENS - Box Set (2001)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Completists will be happy to own many of the rarities on this four-disc set, including Stevens's first demo session, an unreleased 1970 duet with Elton John, a cover of Fats Domino's "Blue Monday," and several choice live cuts from the late '70s. And it's nice to have an overview of the artist's entire career - from late '60s pop-star wannabe to '70s folk-rock superstar - in one place. But the difference between early Cat Stevens (despite composing hits for others) and "post-Tea for the Tillerman" Stevens is substantial. The two follow-up LPs were part of a trilogy of brilliance - both musically and lyrically - and any Stevens collection must start there. Nevertheless, surprises and some gems are to be found throughout all four discs - even his most recent recording (as Yusuf Islam) isn't bad. This box set also offers a choice opportunity to reassess a deserving career. - amazon.com

Recorded between 1965 and 1997.

SOLOMON BURKE - Don't Give Up On Me (2002) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Van Morrison, the stellar list of songwriting contributors on this comeback effort by '60s soul legend Solomon Burke goes on and on. Did we mention Brian Wilson, Nick Lowe, and even his highness Bob Dylan also donating tunes? Burke came to prominence when soul music was a staple on AM radio as performed by himself and peers Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and Aretha Franklin. Contemporary R&B singers from the endlessly melismatic school could learn a thing or two from Burke's passionate restraint. As producer, the singer-songwriter Joe Henry takes a page from the Daniel Lanois (Dylan, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris) school favoring natural sounds, deep resonance, and subtly spectral reverb. There is much reverence to the past in this relatively stripped down approach, but it is also perfectly evident upon close inspection that this is a contemporary album. - cduniverse.com

ROBIN TROWER - Day Of The Eagle: The Best of Robin Trower (2008)

Robin Trower has been producing accessible and mostly melodic hard rock for more than 30 years. He served a five-year stint as the lead guitarist of Procol Harum from 1967-1972 before embarking on his solo career. I was not a big fan of Procol Harum during that time period but became so after Trower left. Oddly I also became a fan of Trower’s solo work so it all goes back to the old whole vs. the parts. Day Of The Eagle: The Best Of Robin Trower is a 17-song compilation that gathers together most of his better known and popular tracks from his lengthy solo career. At this point in his career, Trower has a lot of gold to be mined from his extensive catalogue and this album does a good job of assembling these musical gems in one place. The title song, “Day Of The Eagle,” is taken from his classic album, Bridge Of Sighs, and sets the tone for what will follow. Trower mostly recorded as part of a power trio with an occasional extra guitar. Here bassist-vocalist James Dewar and Trower’s guitar playing come close to a Jimi Hendrix sound. Trower is a master at improvisation but unlike many other guitarists never lets it get out of control. He always has the knack of returning his songs to their basic melodies and structures. There are two excellent live songs presented on the album. “Too Rolling Stoned” shows off Trower’s technical skill and finger speed. “Althea” has an excellent and typical '70’s drum solo plus some inventive wah-wah guitar by Trower. Day Of The Eagle just rolls along once it hits its stride. “Daydream” is a slow bluesy number filled with Cream like chord progressions. “Caledonia” and “Man Of The World” provide ample room for more improvisation. “In City Dreams,” “Caravan To Midnight,” “Long Misty Days,” “Bridge Of Sighs” and probably the best song Robin Trower ever produced, “Victims Of The Fury,” take the listener on a ride through the 1970s and '80s world of hard rock. If there is one criticism I have of Robin Trower it is his sound has changed little over the years. If you liked the 1970’s Robin Trower you will like the Trower of today. This issue is not a real problem for me as I believe that within the musical confines he has set for himself he is a master of his trade. WILLIE NELSON - The Essential Willie Nelson (2003)

This is the one to have. Let's face it, all compilations have their weaknesses, but the 2 disc "The Essential Willie Nelson" (2003) is the first to cover all the labels Willie has recorded for and all the big hits in one set! Disc one kicks off with 7 early 60s recordings including "Night life", "Hello Walls", and "Crazy" (which Willie wrote & Patsy Cline made famous). Track 8, "Me and Paul" starts Willie's 70s recordings including "Blue eyes crying in the rain" and of course his classic duets with Waylon: "Good Hearted Woman" & "Mama's don't let your babies...". 3 songs are included from the 1978 album "Stardust": "Blue Skies", "Georgia on my mind", & "All of Me" and disc one closes with two live tracks: "Whiskey River" & "Stay a little longer" both from the '78 album "Willie & Family Live." Disc 2 continues with late 70s and early 80s hits like "My Heroes have always been Cowboys", "Always on my mind", and of course "On the road again". More classic duets follow with "Pancho & Lefty" (a personal favorite) with Merle Haggard, "To all the girls..." with Julio Iglesias, and "Seven Spanish Angels" with Ray Charles. The 1984 gem "Highwayman" featuring Kristofferson, Waylon, and Cash is also here. The second disc is wrapped up with more duets: "Slow Dancing" with U2 (which surprisingly works because Bono is either MIA or extremely toned down), "Mendocino County Line" with Lee Ann Womack, and "One Time too Many" with Aerosmith. One review stated that these last three songs left a "sour taste" considering that they are part of an "essential" collection. I have to agree, but only greatly in terms of the Aerosmith song. It starts off well enough with acoustic guitar and Willie and Steven Tyler trading verses, but when the rest of Aerosmith kicks in and Tyler does his thing, Willie is drowned out and that's not cool on a Willie Nelson compilation. If one wants to hear Aerosmith, there are many ways to do so. So with the minor exception of the final track of the set, this compilation is indispensable. A great way to get Willie's biggest hits on one reasonably priced set!

The Essential Willie Nelson is a two-disc compilation of Willie Nelson songs. This digitally-remastered compilation covers five decades of Nelson's recording career, and is part of Sony's Essential series of compilation albums. HERE

04. ‘Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers

06. Almonjoi

08. Avery’s Town
09. Unkl Funkl
10. Thrash Boogie 2010
11. Eleventh Hour Blues

The latest album by Deanna Bogart, 11th Hour, pushes the envelope of what many would consider to be, “the blues.” However this is an artist that any music fan can easily embrace because the music defies hewn category. Bogart’s songs are intelligent, her lyrics are endearing and her arrangements far surpass the vast minions of faceless sound-alike zombies that permeate the landscape. Radio programmers will want to pay close attention to the album’s 3rd track, “Love and Attention.” While this stunning, show stopping duet with Tommy Castro is certainly not going to draw much reward from the blues award system, this is simply one of the finest radio friendly pop songs since the term, ‘Philadelphia Soul’ was coined in the 1970’s. The track is immediately credible with Bogart’s songwriting and arrangement on the ballad well beyond exceptional. Yes, it is that good. On ‘11th Hour’ Bogart does two covers, ‘Since We’ve Ended as Lovers,’ written by Stevie Wonder but given to Jeff Beck as a reputed payoff for reneging on the promised track, ‘Superstition.’ John Hiatt’s, ‘Have a Little Faith’ is also given Bogar HERE

The record also contains four covers including "Rebels" by Tom Petty, which the band recorded originally for the TV show "King Of The Hill" and "Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan which provided Shonna Tucker with her first ever lead vocal performance on a DBT HERE

GEOFFREY GURRUMUL YUNUPINGU - Gurrumul (2008)

Gurrumul is the debut album for Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, an indigenous Australian musician, who sings in the Yolngu language. He was born blind, has never learned Braille and does not have a guide dog or use a white cane. Yunupingu speaks only a few words of English, and is said to be acutely shy.
He plays drums, keyboards, guitar (a right hand-strung guitar left-handed) and didgeridoo, but it is the clarity of his singing voice that has attracted rave reviews. He sings stories of his land in both languages (Gälpu, Gumatj or Djambarrpuynu, all Yol?u Matha) and English.

It is performed in a mixture of both Yolngu and English. It reached #4 on the ARIA charts, won ARIA awards for Best World Music Album and Best Independent Release and won a Deadly for Album of the Year. The track "Gurrumul History (I Was Born Blind)" also won a Deadly for Single of the Year. HERE

KEN HENSLEY - Elements: Anthology 1968-2005 (2006)

Two CDs and three-dozen tracks chart the glittering, if somewhat underplayed, career of the Heep keyboardist/singer: from the opening track Looking Glass by The Gods (all hissy psych-pop with Argent-esque keys) to the regal chorale and synths of Romance. In between, Head Machine’s syncopated acid rock on Climax, and Toe Fat’s echo-laden stridency on Working Nights, presage the main course of Heep classics. Granted, much of the material has been recycled more times than Thames water, but the emphasis is on Hensley’s playing, and his harpsichord tones on The Park contrast with the folk singalong of Lady In Black and the Jon Lord-like rock of Look At Yourself. Standouts include the pomp of Rainbow Dream and the Thin Lizzy-esque Blind Eye, before the cacophony of If I Had The Time. Then there’s the AOR of Can’t Keep A Good Band Down and Wise Man, before the solo years are presented through another 18 cuts, with a solitary Blackfoot interlude on Send Me An Angel. Ken’s own work veers between the early prog of BJH and even Tangerine Dream (From Time To Time), to majestic chorales a la The Moody Blues (Cold Autumn Sunday) and The Eagles-like Secret. It’s all mellifluous, atmospheric stuff, but the odd decent into blues/country-rock and jazz (In The Morning) would have been best avoided. - recordcollectormag.com HERE

STUART SMITH - Heaven & Earth (1999)

Previously released in 1999 Heaven & Earth is getting a second chance with an expanded re-release. Stuart Smith is the driving force and has staked a claim as a premier rock guitarist. At the recent All Access L.A. Music Awards show Smith won “Best Guitarist” and Heaven & Earth won “Best Overall Album”. Smith is a classically trained guitarist, also receiving instruction from the legendary Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Smith’s guitar style is all over this album, flowing between blues, classical and hard rock.

Heaven & Earth features a collection of some brand names in rock and roll. “Don’t Keep Me Waiting” features vocals by Kelly Hansen, which are convincing enough to pull off a lyrically weak chorus. The title track “Heaven & Earth” includes vocalist Joe Lynn Turner and guitarist Howard Leese. A cover of Blind Lemon Jefferson’s “See That My Grave is Kept Clean” includes Glenn Hughes on vocals, Richie Sambora on Dobro and Carmine Appice on drums. Sambora also offers vocals and guitar on one of the album’s many highlights, “When a Blind Man Cries”. “Dreams of Desire” is an instrumental inspired by Bach. “Shadow of the Tyburn Tree” is a traditional English folk song written today about an event that happened over 400 years ago. Rock and roll is steeped in the blues and rock guitarists have used classical influences for a long time. Smith has both schools within his nimble fingers and uses them to maximum effect. - rocknworld.com HERE

CHRIS FARLOWE - Hungary For The Blues (2006)

Still possessed of one of the crunchiest growls in rock, Chris Farlowe divides his time these days between the sporadically re-formed Colosseum and a solo career that just won't quit. Hungary for the Blues spotlights the latter, a live set recorded at the Gastroblues Festival Parks in Hungary (hence the awful pun of the CD title) back in 2000, and it's as powerful a representation of his live show as you could hope for. Spinning back and forth throughout his career, the repertoire hits all the high spots. "Out of Time," "Handbags and Gladrags," and a terrific take on the Small Faces' "All or Nothing" spin him back to the days when he was a bona fide pop star; a clutch of bluesier numbers (a deliciously protracted "Stormy Monday," "This Guitar Don't Lie," "Lonesome Road") exemplify the music that he's always loved the best; and Randy Newman's "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today" and Glenn Frey's "Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed" remind listeners just what a great ear for a song Farlowe's always had. It's a terrific-sounding disc, all the more so if you can listen to it just a few decibels below the pain threshold. Farlowe's vinyl recordings have always lacked a certain something; they have never truly captured the might and magic that goes into his performance. Hungary for the Blues, on the other hand, smells of hard-rocking sweat before you ever open the jewel case. ~ All Music Guide
