ELLEN McILWAINE - Up From The Skies: The Polydor Years (1998)

With her bluesy intonation and trademark gusty delivery, it is a wonder that singer/songwriter Ellen McIlwaine (guitar/piano/vocals) wasn't more commercially successful. This single-disc anthology encompasses her first two solo platters Honky Tonk Angel (1972) and We the People (1973), with a sole unissued reading of the soul classic "It's Growing." After spending a majority of her youth in Japan with her missionary parents, McIlwaine and family settled in Atlanta, Georgia in the early 1960s. Her first love was the Creole-based sound of artists such as Professor Longhair and Fats Domino, however, it was McIlwaine's admitted infatuation with the clean, stinging licks of bluesman B.B. King that would yield the more obvious inspiration. After moving to New York City in the mid-'60s, she was quickly ingratiated into the fertile electric folk scene, where she sat in with or opened up for the likes of Muddy Waters, Elvin Bishop and even befriended another newcomer named Jimi Hendrix -- prior to his U.K. defection in 1966. After forming the edgy and rowdy combo Fear Itself and releasing one all-but-dismissed long-player, McIlwaine decided to go it alone. After signing with Polydor, she commenced work on Honky Tonk Angel, which was documented both on-stage at the venerable Bitter End in New York City, as well as in the studio at the equally luminous Record Plant. Her aggressive and diverse cover versions were taken from a wide array of styles, such as Johnnie Taylor's Memphis soul on "Toe Hold" to the Kitty Wells country classic "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels." Perhaps most interesting is the thoroughly inventive reading of Guy Warren's African jazz on "Pinebo (My Story)." McIlwaine provided some a few stunning originals, including the woozy slide guitar blues rave-up "Losing You" as well as the upbeat and funky "Wings of a Horse." These strong compositions became a precursor to her follow-up We the People, as it drew more heavily upon her own material. Among the highlights are McIlwaine's profound fretwork on "Ain't No Two Ways to It (It's Love)," the languid and dreamy "Underground River" and the palpitation-inducing acoustic-raga, "We the People." The selection is not only the title track, but the album's sole live cut, recorded at Carnegie Hall during her support slot for the progressive Latin-fused funk of Mandrill. Talk about your eclectic double-bill! ~ All Music Guide

04. Fight the Power
05. May This Be Love
06. Crawling Kingsnake
07. I'm A Woman
08. Bid You Goodnight
09. Lean On Me

Guitarist, singer and songwriter Ellen McIlwaine is a gutsy, spirited performer who plays and sings a fiery brand of blues like few other female blues singers. Why she's not more widely known is one of the mysteries of the record business, as she's been on the scene a long time.

This live recording from Germany captures the essence of her stage show at the turning of the millennium. It's stark evidence of how increasingly rhythmic her work became through the years. She routinely incorporates reggae, funk, and other black styles into her distinctive, perhaps unique, sound that includes a fat, rich tone achieved by few guitarists of either gender. Covers of songs by one-time collaborator Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, and the Isley Brothers reveal some of her touchstones, although by this point she's evolved far beyond her blues roots. Her yodeling will put off some listeners. If you can get past that, you're in for a ride. ~ All Music Guide

DAVID BYRON - Man Of Yesterday (2005)

David Byron (1947 – 1985) was the original lead vocalist for Spice (from 1967 through 1969) and is most famous for singing in the legendary English rock band Uriah Heep between 1969 and 1976. Despite his vocal range (paired with a sense of dynamics), and a charismatic stage presence, Byron was dismissed from Uriah Heep in 1976, at the demand of keyboardist Ken Hensley (the band's primary songwriter), who gave the ultimatum "it's him or me" to band manager Gerry Bron, citing Byron's increasingly erratic behaviour due to alcohol abuse. He unsuccessfully attempted to revive his career with Rough Diamond (a band also featuring former members of Humble Pie and Wings), a second solo album (Baby Faced Killer), and The Byron Band. Mick Box and Trevor Bolder of Uriah Heep invited Byron to re-join the band in 1980, but Byron refused. He died of alcohol related complications in 1985. HERE

What do you get when you put former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek up alongside guitar wizard Roy Rogers (not the cowboy star)? You get BALLADS BEFORE THE RAIN, an evocative, reflective duo release that features Manzarek's piano interacting simply and effectively with Rogers' guitar. The bill of fare is all-instrumental, and includes some Manzarek originals, a Satie piece, and yes, a couple of reinterpreted Doors classics, "Riders on the Storm" and "The Crystal Ship." Even some 40 years after the Doors, Manzarek's angular, visceral style is still immediately identifiable, but when it crosses paths with Rogers's unearthly slide work and gutsy twang it ventures into new territory, a crossroads where jazz, New Age, and classical meet.

TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS - Anthology: Through the Years (2000)

Neatly fitting in between 1993's GREATEST HITS and the 5-CD PLAYBACK box set that came out two years later, this 34-track collection is a chronological tour of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' MCA Records material. The consistent quality found throughout this two-CD set that's bookended by the sinister-sounding "Breakdown" and chiming "Surrender"(a song Petty wrote in the '70s but didn't get around to recording until August 2000) boggles the mind. Tight playing and a palpable sense of passion from the four-piece Heartbreakers transform songs like "Even the Losers", "Rebels" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" into rock & roll manna. Elsewhere, this Floridian singer-songwriter's sharp eye for pop culture ("Jammin' Me") and storytelling mastery ("Into the Great Wide Open," "Two Gunslingers") become pleasantly recurring characteristics. The inclusion of a scorching live version of the Byrds' "So You Wanna Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star" show Petty and company to be as potent on stage as in the studio. By the end of this musical tour it's hard to argue with the lofty statement Cameron Crowe makes in his liner notes calling Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers "...the greatest and most consistent American band of the last twenty-five years..." - amazon.com HERE

On 2009's FREE YOUR MIND, the 10th album by Seattle blues band Too Slim & the Taildraggers, the band digs deeply into the combination of classic Chicago blues roots and contemporary, rock-tinged, in-your-face attack that they spent the last several albums perfecting. Tim "Too Slim" Langford's raw, gravel-and-nails singing style matches his thick, heavy guitar tone to a T as he leads the Taildraggers through this set of blues-baked, house-rocking tunes.

JOHNNY CASH - The Gospel Music of Johnny Cash (2008)

In a career spanning six decades, the self-proclaimed Man in Black recorded more than 1,500 songs, was enshrined in Halls of Fame and hailed as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine. Although he earned distinction as an icon in American roots, rock and country music, in his true heart Johnny Cash yearned to be a gospel singer, and he turned time and again to his gospel music roots for solace and inspiration. Throughout his remarkable life, Johnny Cash remained a seeker of truth and faith, as this collection of his gospel recordings attests.

Many of MCA's other compilation have lacked the simple focus of this album. These are Neil's big MCA Hits soon after they were hits. The compilations from later years have been more about non-singles that became concert favorites. The late 60's/early 70's was the best period of Neil's career:Powerful songs with personal lyrics and soaring arrangements. And great rockers with a distinctive honey-and-toast flavour.

JOHN KAY & STEPPENWOLF - Live At 25 (1995)

While Steppenwolf can take some credit for spawning the heavy metal genre (the term came from the "heavy metal thunder" phrase in "Born to Be Wild"), they remained, at heart, a hard rocking bar band, and this reissue of their 1995 double-disc live set bears witness to that. Now billed as John Kay & Steppenwolf, the band's lineup for the late '90s included original vocalist Kay, Michael Wilk on bass and keyboards, lead guitarist Rocket Ritchotte, and Ron Hurst on drums. Live At 25: Silver Anniversary is a well-paced run-through of their classic hits, which are stretched out a bit, but remain close to their original structure, and Kay's throaty vocals are almost as good as they were in the late '60s. While it undoubtedly would have been fun to see a show on this tour, John Kay's occasional bombastic tendencies, which began to emerge way band back in 1969 on Monster, make this set feel, at times, like a Broadway production of a big, bad, rock band concert. Other than that, it rocks. ~ All Music Guide

The recording of Live at 25 took place over multiple dates during the band's 1992 tour. It was the first live album the band had released since 1981's Live in London, and the first live recordings released since 1991's Born to Be Wild - A Retrospective compilation album. HERE

ROGER GLOVER - The Butterfly Ball & The Grasshopper's Feast (1974)

Of all the multitudinous highways and byways down which the enterprising Deep Purple collector can travel, none, perhaps, is so surprising as The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast, Purple bassist Roger Glover's first "solo" album, and - almost incidentally - one of the most delightful children's records ever made. Yes, a children's record. In 1973, Glover was approached about creating a musical adaptation of artist Alan Aldridge and poet William Plomer's book of the same name -- a commission that surprised him, but which he nevertheless accepted. The book itself is delightful and, while Glover's work is unquestionably more heavily flavored by the near-psychedelia of the illustrations, the spirit of the text is retained as well, to create an album that stands among the few truly successful musical adaptations of an existing story yet committed to vinyl. Although Glover, as the album's premier composer, takes the bulk of the credit for this success, his co-conspirators, too, merit praise. Convening what resembles one of the greatest all-star lineups in heavy metal history - and then banning them from even glancing toward their usual territory - Glover is joined by Purple stalwarts David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, future Rainbow frontman Ronnie James Dio, session stars Eddie Hardin and Tony Ashton, soul singer Jimmy Helms, Roxy Music's Eddie Jobson and John Gustafson, and three quarters of funk-rock aspirants Fancy. Each was given his own role to play and the resultant album is a tremendous mishmash of musical styles, from folky balladeering to psychedelic whimsy, but leaning most heavily toward an early-'70s pop/rock vibe -- for some reason, one could imagine the early Queen spending an awful lot of time listening to The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast. Given the heavily narrative nature of the project, it is best listened to in one session - a handful of tracks certainly exist more to carry the tale than make a musical impact. Highlights, however, leap out from across the platter, with the macabre "Old Blind Mole" and the positively buoyant "Love Is All" the twin extremes around which the action revolves. Gustafson's hard rock "Watch out for the Bat," meanwhile, must surely have induced nightmares within the album's younger fans, while Dio's closing "Homeward" all but predicts the course of arena rock during the '80s. [The original vinyl packs 19 tracks; the 25th-Anniversary CD adds one, the European B-side "Little Chalk Blue," together with a fabulous enhanced multimedia clip ("Love Is All" again) taken from a projected animated TV series. It's a great package, as well as a chance to reacquaint yourself with one of childhood's most treasured tales.] ~ All Music Guide

THE ROLLING STONES - Necrophilia [Unreleased 1972 Album] (2002)

Here's an odd album: 1972's Necrophilia by The Rolling Stones. This album was never officially released, but the original proof cover art and very rare acetate were produced. Originally intended as a follow-up release after the very successful Hot Rocks 1964-1971 compilation (it was the Stones' best-selling record at the time). Necrophilia was compiled by bassist Bill Wyman who picked out some very rare Stones song. Since most of the songs were not written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Allen Klein (the Stones' ex-manager) stepped in and demanded more Jagger/Richards song, purely for monetary reasons. So Necrophilia was scrapped and what emerged was More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies). Obviously when bootlegs discovered the acetate and they started making and selling the vinyl, eventually releasing it on compact disc in 2002. One of the companies that released Necrophilia is called A Vinyl Gang Products. They mostly delt with live recordings, you can find out more about AVGP on rollingstonesnet. The rare song that I'm going to use is "Andrew's Blues". HERE

JOHNNY WINTER - The Woodstock Experience [LIMITED EDITION] (2009)

Among white blues singers of the 1960s, there were some who studied the music so intently they amazed even the genre's creators with their technical mastery. A select few, however, seemed to be born oozing authenticity, sounding just as soulful as the greatest black bluesmen while forging a completely new sound. Johnny Winter belonged in the second category. A long-haired hippie albino, he astounded initially skeptical listeners with his Howlin' Wolf-like vocals and wild Johnny Guitar Watson-esque guitar stylings. THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE showcases Winter's first taste of national exposure, first with his 1969 self-titled debut album, and then with his set at the Woodstock festival later the same year. The latter recording is the revelation here-a tornado of raging slide guitar and shouted vocals that sounds as if a late night Lone Star State roadhouse gig has been magically transported to the upstate New York farm. With several tracks clocking in at over 10 minutes ("Mean Town Blues," a hellacious Edgar Winter-led jam on "Tobacco Road"), the album showcases Johnny at his freest and most explosive. - cduniverse.com HERE

Before landing his first commercial success with 1969's "Space Oddity," David Bowie released a number of flop records in a variety of styles. He first emerged in the mid-1960s as a mod following the paths of The Who, Kinks, and Rolling Stones. The 17-cut CD Early On (1964-66) is by far the most comprehensive anthology of his first works, gathering all six of his first singles and adding five previously unreleased demos from 1965. Fans of Bowie's famous work may be nonplussed by this material, in which the singer shifts from sub-Stones R&B to Who/Kinkish power chords to trendy Swinging London pop in search of his own style. He didn't establish his own identity on these fairly derivative recordings, but that's not to say they aren't without their enjoyable aspects. The 1965 single "You've Got A Habit Of Leaving" has some fierce Who-styled feedback, "Can't Help Thinking About Me" is an uneasily introspective number that foreshadows his later lyrics, and the acoustic demos find him groping closer toward a more familiar and distinctive vocal style. Several of the tunes on this collection were produced by the legendary Shel Talmy, who also handled sessions for The Who and Kinks in the mid-'60s. ~ All Music Guide HERE

Why this album was never officially released until now remains one of the great mysteries of major-label decision making. Long bootlegged, Live Santa Monica '72 captures the glam-rock pioneer during his Ziggy Stardust prime, on his first U.S. tour, recording what is unequivocally his best concert album. With no needless production tricks to separate the music from the live experience, everything, including the crowd, becomes part of this intimate show taped at the Santa Monica Civic Center. Bowie is relaxed and chatty — he even introduces "Andy Warhol" with a goofy impersonation of the pop artist. His band, featuring the combustive guitar work of Mick Ronson and tight rhythm section of bassist Trevor Bolder and drummer Mick "Woody" Woodmansey, was his strongest lineup ever, and here they run though nearly all of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, fleshing out the loose storyline about an alien rock star with appropriate cuts from earlier LPs, such as Hunky Dory's "Life on Mars" and Space Oddity's title song. Bowie also turns cover versions of the Velvet Underground's junkie anthem "Waiting for the Man" and Jacques Bruel's beautiful and harrowing "My Death" into fitting rock & roll hymns for Ziggy. It's a near-flawless document of a character Bowie would soon leave behind for good. - rollingstone.com

Released as a Wal-Mart exclusive in January 2009 - its exclusivity causing an uproar upon its announcement in late 2008, as plenty of critics thought the pro-union Springsteen should have little to do with Wal-Mart, an argument that ignores plenty of sad corporate realities of the new millennium - Greatest Hits is the third Springsteen hits comp to appear in America and the first to be billed to Bruce & the E Street Band. This designation means that the slim 12-track collection contains nothing from Tunnel of Love through The Ghost of Tom Joad, or Nebraska and Devils & Dust - those were solo Springsteen, one and all. There are also no new tracks and nothing unexpected, just nine big hits from the golden age of classic rock - "Rosalita" through "Born in the U.S.A." - with two cuts from The Rising and "Radio Nowhere" added for good measure. It's not an imaginative collection but it's not bad, either: it's a collection targeted at a general audience, those who would pick it up at a Wal-Mart, nothing more or less. It's so basic and unassuming that it's hard to imagine why anybody would get worked up about it, really. ~ All Music Guide

Blackfoot Sue was a British rock band, formed in 1970 by the twin brothers Tom and David Farmer, and Eddie Golga. A single released in August 1972, “Standing in the Road”, reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart. Lack of further tangible success left them labelled as one-hit wonders. However, they did have another record enter the UK Singles Chart. “Sing Don’t Speak” reached number 36 in December 1972. According to Allmusic, “they were written off as a teen sensation and broke up in 1977”.

V.A. - Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues - A Musical Journey (2003)

Five-CD deluxe boxed set includes a comprehensive collection of the music from the seven films airing on PBS. A definitive overview of blues, from its earliest recordings over 80 years ago, to contemporary artists and new recordings made specifically for The Blues. Music from the PBS Series The Blues, executive produced by acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese.

This is by far the best and most comprehensive introduction to recorded blues ever assembled, drawing styles, record labels, and eras together with the efficiency of a spider’s web. These five discs-tied to the hit-and-miss PBS film series Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues-embrace field hollers, early queens Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, the music’s first composer W.C. Handy, Delta slide guitarists, string bands, piano barrelhousers, jazz geniuses Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, Texas hotshots, lyric poets Percy Mayfield and Willie Dixon, Chicago powerhouses from Muddy Waters to Buddy Guy, Howlin’ Wolf and howling white boys, soulkittens Etta James and Janis Joplin, juke joint brawlers like Hound Dog Taylor, African torchbearer Ali Farka Toure, modern guitar heroes Stevie Ray Vaughan and Luther Allison, and even recent hit-makers Peggy Scott-Adams and Susan Tedeschi. And that’s just a smidgen of the talents represented across more than 100 cuts. Nonetheless, there are grave omissions in disc five, which focuses on contemporary blues. The raw electric sound of present-day Mississippi, embodied by R.L. Burnside and other artists on the Fat Possum label, has done much to open the ears of college-age audiences and should be included. Also absent are the music’s most important contemporary innovators: Afro-blues fusionist Corey Harris, psychedelic folk bluesman Otis Taylor and rap-blues proselytizer Chris Thomas King. Still, it’s obvious this collection is a work of devotion and intelligence as well as commerce. - amazon.com

TOM WAITS - Beautiful Maladies - The Island Years (1998)

Even if Tom Waits had ended his career in the early 1980s, before he moved over to Island Records, he would still be regarded as a mighty member of the singer/songwriter elite. This makes it all the more impressive that he completely re-invented himself after switching labels in the mid-'80s, most notably with the Holy Trinity of SWORDFISHTROMBONES, RAIN DOGS, and FRANK'S WILD YEARS. On these albums, whose highlights make up the meat of BEAUTIFUL MALADIES, Waits abandoned the jazzy, piano-bound beatnik persona he'd carefully maintained throughout the '70s. Instead he created a groundbreaking patchwork that encompassed polkas, blues, deranged cabaret, the avant-garde, and more, in a funhouse-mirror reflection of Howlin' Wolf, Kurt Weill, and Harry Partch. The fact that he'd lost none of his masterful songwriting acumen in the process insured that Waits's Island recordings, so definitively represented here, would be his lasting legacy. - cduniverse.com HERE

This amazing set was captured live without a net and features 10 outstanding, killer Big Electric Cream Jams that will trip your brain and rock your retro -'70s bluesy heavy guitar power trio jam: house down to the ground! All three bad-ass players lock in and nail down the classic Cream riffage with style, precision and class that give the term "power trio" new meaning. Onesko, Bogert and Ceo dig in deep and pay legitimate, respectful musical homage to the late 60s British Supergroup. Tim Bogert is one of the greatest rock bass players in the world and the Man really delivers and lives up to his Legendary status on this outstanding live power trio recording. Emery Ceo lays down thick, solid/powerful drum grooves and last but not least, Mike Onesko does an incredible professional job and seriously hits true guitar hero status on this phenomenal Grooveyard Records disc.

"The Best of Bonnie Raitt on Capitol 1989-2003" gathers the biggest and brightest moments of her time at Capitol Records, including definitive hits such as "Thing Called Love," "Nick of Time," "Something to Talk About," and "Love Sneakin' Up on You" as well as newer material like "Time of Our Lives" and "Hear Me Lord" from her 2002 album Silver Lining. The collection is fairly egalitarian, taking a roughly equal amount of tracks from each of her seven albums for the label, including 1995's Road Tested, which is represented by "Love Me Like a Man," "Rock Steady," and "I Believe I'm in Love With You." This approach might be too even-handed for Raitt fans expecting more songs from albums such as Luck of the Draw and Nick of Time, though it does give the album context and a nice chronological flow. Nitpicking aside, as the first collection of her best-known material, The Best of Bonnie Raitt on Capitol 1989-2003 is a welcome retrospective. ~ All Music Guide HERE

"American Dream" is the 1988 reunion album for Crosby, Stills & Nash with Neil Young. Released on November 3, 1988, there was great anticipation for the quartet's first studio album in eighteen years, but all four performers were in fact at various ebbs in their songwriting. The harmonies still sounded intact, but critics found the songs too placid and trite. The title song, written by Neil Young, was an attempted satire of sensational political scandals involving Oliver North and former presidential candidate Gary Hart. Other songs included "Got It Made," written by Stephen Stills with help from Young, addressed CSNY's earlier fans expressing happiness that they were secure and comfortable in their personal lives yet simultaneously urging them to remember their earlier idealism. It also included "Compass," David Crosby's lament on how much time he had wasted on drugs. "American Dream" was meant to be a concept album on the meaning of American dreams and aspirations, but critics and fans alike found that CSNY had fallen short of their goals. - wikipedia

LIVING IN THE LIGHT, Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters' followup to 2008's well-received HOPE RADIO, is a veritable treasure of blues guitar playing. Nearly every track, most over five minutes and recorded in spacious state-of-the-art sound, features rich, vibrant playing from the contemporary blues master. Not far behind is keyboardist Dave Liminia whose signature work on piano and especially the Hammond B-3 saturates the album. Highlights include a Holocaust-themed song, "Child Of a Survivor," penned by Earl and the Rev. Debbie Branford, and sung by guest Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, who also contributes a blistering harp solo. There are also some traditional acoustic guitar turns. as on "Donna Lee," an original dedicated to Earl's wife, and Robert Jr. Lockwood's "Take A Little Walk With Me," both sung by Wilson as well. - cduniverse.com

It's difficult to think of any guitarist in the last decade who has enjoyed quite the same unanimous acclaim as Matt Schofield. In the short space of time since his 2004 debut, this unassuming tone fanatic has already been dubbed one of the top ten British Blues guitarists of all time by Guitar and Bass magazine. Now, with HEADS, TAILS & ACES, Matt has produced his most compelling set yet. With new recruits - drummer, Alain Baudry and bassist, Jeff Walker - this album just bristles with energy and scorching solos. And it's an entirely song-based album, with nine of the eleven tracks written or co-written by Schofield. The breadth of material on this album is impressive, spanning everything from the smouldering Malaco-like soul groove of War We Wage, to the eccentric back beat driven Betting Man and the Jazz-tinged Nothing Left. Underpinned by Jonny Henderson's constantly empathetic keyboards, Matt stamps his own style on proceedings, slamming into solos that burn with intensity. As ever, there is a power and emotion in Schofield's playing rarely heard these days and even more rarely in combination with such a fluid and melodic approach. HERE

Paul McCartney might not have been the coolest or most cosmic ex-Beatle, but none of his former bandmates could touch his knack for creating perfect pop singles. Say what you will about their "lack of depth," but the 12 songs on Wings Greatest considerably brightened AM radio playlists during the 1970s, and most of them have actually improved with age. Wings' pure rock power is ably represented by "Band on the Run," "Hi Hi Hi," "Jet," "Live and Let Die" and the underrated non-LP single "Junior's Farm," all of which positively explode from the speakers. Paul's gooey streak shows up on "My Love," "Silly Love Songs," and the bagpipe-infused "Mull of Kintyre," but only "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" still contains a high cringe quotient. Some key tracks are missing-most notably "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Venus and Mars/Rock Show"-but Wings Greatest is still a thrilling document of Macca at the peak of his pop abilities. - amazon.com

LEONARD COHEN - Live In London (2009) thumbupthumbupthumbup

For over four decades, Leonard Cohen has been one of the most important and influential songwriters of our time, a figure whose body of work achieves greater depths of mystery and meaning as time goes on. His songs have set a virtually unmatched standard in their seriousness and range. Sex, spirituality, religion, power - he has relentlessly examined the largest issues in human lives, always with a full appreciation of how elusive answers can be to the vexing questions he raises. But those questions, and the journey he has traveled in seeking to address them, are the ever-shifting substance of his work, as well as the reasons why his songs never lose their overwhelming emotional force. Documentaries, awards, tribute albums and the ongoing march of artists eager to record his songs all acknowledge the peerless contribution Cohen has made to what one of his titles aptly calls "The Tower of Song." In 2008 Leonard Cohen embarked on his first tour in 15 years. The Live In London release fully captures and recreates the extraordinary show from that tour that earned Cohen more than 80 five-star reviews for his performances. - amazon.com HERE

BARENAKED LADIES - Disc One: All Their Greatest Hits 1991–2001 (2001)

Electrifying performers and pure-pop songwriters of the highest order, Toronto's Barenaked Ladies have emerged over a decade as that strangest of beasts. They'll never land a dishy cover story in Mojo Magazine, but as they reflect on those ribald years between 1991 and 2001, the five can allow themselves wry smiles, knowing that sometimes, just sometimes, the cream rises to the top. In addition to familiar radio staples such as "Pinch Me," "The Old Apartment," "Jane," "Alternative Girlfriend," and the ubiquitous "One Week," there's a trump card on All Their Greatest Hits that will prove irresistible to completists: the Ladies' buttery, acoustic version of Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers in a Dangerous Time." Recorded eons ago for a Cockburn tribute disc that almost immediately went out of print, the song has until now been a rare and highly coveted collector's item. Two news songs--"Thanks That Was Fun" and "It's Only Me (The Wizard of Magicland)"-were recorded specifically for this collection, while two others ("Brian Wilson" and "What a Good Boy") are captured live. But what really brings this album home is, ironically, "If I Had $1,000,000." One of their very first hits cut as the Ladies were learning to dovetail their so-called "acoustic hip-hop" into slicker pop sensibilities, "$1,000,000"-a simple knock-kneed love song with harmonies so tight they're practically braided-is a snapshot of a band with all the pieces in place just as the planets were about to align. - amazon.com

Disc One: All Their Greatest Hits (1991–2001) is the seventh full-length album by Barenaked Ladies. It is a "greatest hits" compilation spanning BNL's first decade, featuring a version of almost every single they had released to that point.

The most surprising thing about the Tragically Hip's 1997 concert disc Live Between Us is that it took so long to release. For all their millions of albums sold, this is a band that really only defines itself on stage, with vocalist Gord Downie slipping into a state of unhinged possession, eyes rolled back in his head and completely lost in the song around him. Recorded, astonishingly enough, at a hockey arena in Detroit and not in Canada, Live Between Us touches on most of the Hip's career, from 1989's crowd-pleasing "Blow at High Dough" and a hair-raising storm through '94's "Nautical Disaster" to the charming "Gift Shop" from '96's Trouble at the Henhouse. There are no radical departures from recorded versions of songs like "Courage" and "Grace, Too," just a workman-like performance from the Hip's heads-down rhythm engine. As always, the most interesting thing is the singer, with Downie muttering away to himself in the middle of songs about alien transmissions and icebergs and slipping into lyrics by tourmates the Rheostatics. You can practically see him twitching. - amazon.com

Cuby & the Blizzards are a Dutch blues group that started in 1964. Right from the start they were a big hit in the Netherlands. In 1967 they toured with Van Morrison (in lieu of his band Them), played with Eddie Boyd, scored a hit with Window of my Eyes and received an Edison award. That year, John Mayall stayed at their farm and the next year they regularly played with the 'king of British blues' Alexis Korner. The line-up of the band changed regularly, but founders Harry Muskee (vocals) and Eelco Gelling (guitar) remained at the core of the band, despite regular unsuccessful attempts to form other bands. Herman Brood was the pianist shortly in 1967 (which kick-started his career) and again in 1976. The spelling of the name varies, with 'Cuby' also written as 'QB' and the ampersand (&) also written as 'and' or '+' and the 'and sometimes left out. The spelling 'Cuby + Blizzards' was used on the first albums.

CROWDED HOUSE - Recurring Dream - The Very Best of Crowded House (1996)

Crowded House is a rock group formed in Melbourne, Australia and led by New Zealand musician and singer-songwriter Neil Finn. Finn is widely recognised as the primary songwriter and creative direction of the band, having led it through several incarnations, drawing members from New Zealand (himself, Tim Finn and Eddie Rayner), Australia (Paul Hester, Nick Seymour, Peter Jones and Craig Hooper) and the United States (Mark Hart, and Matt Sherrod). Though the band owes its original success to the Australian live music scene, references to New Zealand people and places in songs pay homage to their roots ("Kare Kare" is written about Karekare Beach, "Mean to Me" refers to Finn's hometown of Te Awamutu). The success of the group's third album Woodface and the general success of Crowded House and Split Enz prompted the Queen in June 1993 to bestow the Order of the British Empire on both Tim and Neil Finn for their contribution to the music of New Zealand. Originally active between 1984 and 1996, the band's notable hits from this period include "Don't Dream It's Over", "Something So Strong", "Better Be Home Soon", "Now We're Getting Somewhere", "Into Temptation", "Fall at Your Feet" and "Weather with You". In 2007, the group reunited with a new drummer. In this period, the group has released one album, Time on Earth, which reached #1 on Australia's ARIA Albums Chart.

THE SHADOWS - Good Vibrations (1998) [3 CD BOX]

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

Formed in London in 1958/9, The Shadows are Britain's most successful instrumental and vocal group with at least 69 UK hit singles, 35 as 'The Shadows' and 34 as 'Cliff Richard and The Shadows', from the 1950s to the 2000s. The Shadows were pioneers of the group format in the UK. Their 'Apache' hit single paved the way for thousands of guitar-based groups. Many of their EPs charted in the EP chart (defunct since 1968) and most of their studio albums charted in various UK album charts. The Shadows, along with Cliff Richard, were from 1958-1962 the UK's major group. They enjoyed a massive 2nd wave revival spell of success and interest in their music from the late-1970's until disbandment in 1990. - wikipedia

Wishbone Ash were one of THE top guitar bands in the Europe of the 1970s, although they were and remain barely known in the US. They even became tax exiles and lived in the States at the end of the 70s. This album is one of the very best live albums from the 70s, if not ever, for classic two-guitar rock. This live album reflects the best tracks from their first set of albums with their original lineup complete with Andy Powell on his trademark Gibson Flying V, and Ted Turner with his Stratocaster or Les Paul. People strle to pigeonhole this band - usually falling back on the "The English Allman Brothers" or similar. Unlike most guitar rock bands in the 70s Wishbone Ash are actually closer to progressive rock than either the blues based Led Zeppelin approach, or the heavy metal Deep Purple or UFO style or the blues-jazz of the Allmans. But they are more straightforward than say Gentle Giant or Jethro Tull. They represent I think a more mystical approach with the emphasis on melodic intertwining guitar leads and certainly, in their early days at least, long instrumentals. Not too loud, not too many guitar histrionics, but plenty of long, beautifully played, guitar lines and leads often with pseudo-mystical lyrics. A sort of less flashy Kansas. Anyway any person who appreciates guitar based bands and classic rock should listen to this album. The first three tracks in particular are absolute Wishbone classics, my favorite part is the stunning and haunting Ted Turner solo on "Lay Down the Sword". Just wonderful clean melodic and powerful lines that will be guaranteed to impress anyone.

CHUCK BERRY - You Never Can Tell:
His Complete Chess 1960-1966 (2009)

The accepted mythology is that Chuck Berry was the only one of rock's greats to make it through the supposed drought of 1960-1964 with his career and his creativity intact. Jerry Lee wound up a country act, Elvis became a b-grade movie star, Little Richard never regained his momentum even after he reconciled with rock, and many others were, well, were dead. Chuck himself had spent two years in the jug for carting a 14-year-old across state lines to be a "hat check girl" (she was later caught whoring), so it was impressive that Chuck still made music at all, much less regained the charts with classics like "Nadine," "No Particular Place To Go," and "You Never Can Tell." Indeed, those singles rank with his best. Yet the truth made clear by this 4-CD set, the sequel to a "complete '50s" collection by Hip-O, is that Berry had already begun to flag in 1960 and 1961, before his troubles; the two albums he made during this time find him alternately rewriting his classic hits ("Sweet Sixteen"), retreating into standard St. Louis blues ("Driftin' Blues"), and searching for that elusive pop hit ("Diploma For Two"). Solid stuff by anyone's standards but Chuck's, in other words. Upon his release, however, he entered a 18-month period of creativity where most of his later classics were born, and it's this burst that the timeline nature of this set brings out. This set might be only necessary for collectors were it not for a full live album (planned, never issued) that's easily the hottest Chuck-in-concert ever waxed; another entire album of extended guitar jams between Berry and Bo Diddley, and those great singles, which reveal some excellent discoveries (the instrumental b-side "O Rangutang," covers of "Fraulein" and "The Things That I Used To Do"), all of which underscore Chuck's brief yet potent return. A mythbuster, yes, but an entertaining one.

"Electric Dirt" is the second album in the last two years from American musical treasure Levon Helm. Its predecessor, the GRAMMY-winning Dirt Farmer, his first solo LP in a quarter century, followed Levon's near miraculous recovery from throat cancer, and as such represented a new lease on life for the legendary artist, who rose to prominence as the drummer and vocalist for Levon and the Hawks, which later became The Band. Electric Dirt again finds Levon steeped in tradition in his connection to the land and those who live by it, but this record goes deeper and wider, incorporating gospel, blues and soul elements in a bracing collection of originals and carefully chosen outside songs. As with Dirt Farmer, multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell took the reigns as producer and the album was recorded at "The Barn"- Levon Helm Studios. "Our objective here was to take the honesty, innocence and purity of the Dirt Farmer record which represents a true element of what Levon is all about, but also expand on that and explore deeper the goldmine of Levon's musical artistry" states Campbell. - amazon.com

The rest of world is about to discover what San Diego has known for 35 years; Tomcat Courtney is an authentic bluesman in the best of Texas country blues tradition. At the age of 78, Tomcat Courtney made his national debut on May 20th, 2008 with the release of “Downsville Blues” on Blue Witch Records. A bittersweet return to his old hometown prompted the recording of "Downsville Blues", where his marvelously spare, down-home guitar style and full vocals ring with riveting authority. With mastery earned through years of honing his craft, fans and critics describe Tomcat’s guitar and vocal work as “real”, “authentic”, “distinctive” and “amazing.” An extraordinary songwriter, his gift for writing topical songs grabs the essence of time and place, and shines on as captured in “Downsville Blues”, a wistful hometown remembrance, "Disaster Blues" deploring Hurricane Katrina and "Railroad Avenue", a tribute to visiting an ex-girlfriend who lived along the railroad tracks. “It isn’t about flash, it is about feeling,” recalls San Diego Entertainment writer Robert Hawkins. “Tomcat is a showman, but he doesn’t shred chords. He heals busted dreams by singing the blues.” Tomcat’s soulful voice resonates with the depth and strength of a man who has lived his lyrics; the old blues come alive in his guitarwork. The songs are rooted in a simpler time, purified by a musician who sanctifies the blues.

JERRY LEE LEWIS - Last Man Standing (2006)

How do you drum up interest in a Jerry Lee Lewis record, since the Ferriday Fireball is 71 and hasn't put out an album since 1996? First, you pair him with 22 of the biggest stars of rock (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards), country (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard), and blues (Buddy Guy, B.B. King), to show how he put his stamp on nearly every genre. Then, you hire the dean of music chroniclers, Peter Guralnick, to give the liner notes heft. And--oh, yes, you also make sure the piano-pounding pioneer displays the best finger form he's shown in 25 years. Throughout, the Killer crows, struts, and self-mythologizes with the brio of youth, and who could resist him? At times, one may question the wisdom of turning an obvious guitar tune (Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll") into a piano-dominated performance, just as it seems odd to not make the best use of such guests as Toby Keith or Delaney Bramlett. But Lewis never yields the throne for a second, even surrounded by the likes of Robbie Robertson, Neil Young, and Eric Clapton. For that reason, most of these aren't true duets--the star instrumentalists take their solos, and the harmonies of some of the most legendary vocalists (Don Henley, Little Richard) stay too far in the background. But when things really work--as they do with Bruce Springsteen (the rave-up "Pink Cadillac"), Neil Young (a crackling rendition of "You Don't Have To Go"), Kid Rock (an even blacker "Honky Tonk Woman"), George Jones (the novelty-framed "Don't Be Ashamed of Your Age"), and Kris Kristofferson (an especially poignant take on "The Pilgrim: Chapter 33"), the rock of ages cleaves for thee and me. Last Man Standing refers to the famous cover of Million Dollar Quartet, on which he's pictured with fellow Sun artists Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, all now jamming in the great beyond. Yet in a spoken-word reprise at the end of the Kristofferson song--"From the rocking of the cradle / To the rolling of the hearse / The going up was worth the coming down" - The Last Man seems to sest his own fine epitaph. It's hard to argue with a hellraiser extraordinaire. - amazon.com

The title of the album refers to the fact that Lewis is the last of the Sun Records greats (Orbison, Cash, Presley) still walking the earth, let alone making music. That’s the real beauty of Last Man Standing: not only is Jerry Lee Lewis still standing, he’s still making music that means something. He’s proving that he can be as vital over 70 as he was 20, or even 40, years ago. Don’t bet against the man they call the Killer.

A uniformly strong selection of songs and cleaner-than-usual production make TODAY one of Elvis Presley's better '70s studio efforts. From its opening track "T-R-O-U-B-L-E" (later a hit for Travis Tritt), TODAY announces that it is not just another collection of regret-filled ballads from the King. Sure, there are a few torch songs here, but on TODAY the tear-jerkers are balanced out by such up-tempo numbers as "Susan When She Tried," the inspirational "Shake A Hand," and a cover of the Billy Swan hit "I Can Help. On other tracks, Presley transforms the Pointer Sisters' hit "Fairytale" into a two-step and belts out a Tom Jones-like version of the death-row weeper "Green, Green Grass of Home." Throughout, Elvis' crack band sparkles, with guitarist James Burton in particularly fine form. Don't let the nearly identical covers RCA slapped on Presley's Seventies albums fool you: not all Elvis albums from this era are the same. Each has something to recommend it, but TODAY has more than the standard share of highlights.
