The rock group Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts was formed in Vancouver, Canada, in 1980. Members of the band, some that over time slipped out and others that slipped in, were vocalist and guitarist Barney Bentall, who also served as frontman, drummer Jack Guppy, guitarists Doug McFetridge and Colin Nairne, bassists Barry Muir and Kevin Swain, and keyboardists Will Froese and Cam Bowman. Barney Bentall also worked under the pseudonym Brandon Wolf, doing a few solo offerings for fans in 1979. Between 1980 and 1997, the group released nearly 20 singles for major record labels such as CBS and Sony, including songs like "Life Could be Worse," "The House of Love," "Nothing Hurts Like the Words," and "Family Man." There were over half-a-dozen albums too, including Lonely Avenue in 1990, Ain't Life Strange in 1992, and even a greatest hits album in 1997, that carries tracks from the whole decade between 1986 and 1996 of Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts. Thanks to hit songs, long tours, and positive press, the band even had some success in the United States during the last part of its life. HERE

Canadian blues guitarist Colin James turns in a fine set of both original and cover material. Paring back the sound of his previous effort to the basic guitar, bass and drums, James uses horns and keyboards to color and accentuate certain tracks rather than overwhelm. He works his blues magic on such covers as Robert Johnson's "Walkin' Blues" and Jerry Lynn Williams' "Standing on the Edge of Love" while proving his own songwriting capabilities on cuts like "Freedom" and "Better Days." ~ All Music Guide HERE

Along with labelmate Junior Kimbrough, Burnside can be credited with bringing back real, gutbucket blues to a public numbed by the Kenny Wayne Sheperds of the world. His raw, electric style fuses Chicago and Delta blues into an arresting, often hypnotic swirl. COME ON IN represents a summit between Burnside's traditionalism and the high-tech primitivism of the electronica generation. Essentially, it's Beck in reverse; instead of a post-modern electronics-tinged artists incorporating traditional blues influences, COME ON IN is a case of a hardcore bluesman allowing '90s technological advances to enter and even expand his musical world. The simple, hard-hitting rhythms and hooky, repetitive guitar riffs that are the cornerstones of Burnside's style lend themselves quite naturally to the looping and sampling techniques that give COME ON IN it's eccentric, wild-card feel. Everything else in the pop world has been put through its remixing paces, why not blues? Ultimately, Burnsides vision is so singular and insistent, it dominates even the most loop-heavy tracks here, and the electronically altered structures of COME ON IN provide a fresh look at the tradition Burnside has been making his own for his whole life. - cduniverse.com HERE

Big Sugar was a Canadian blues-rock band, active from 1991 to 2004. The eclectic Toronto blues-rock outfit Big Sugar was primarily the project of singer/guitarist Gordie Johnson, who teamed with bassist Terry Wilkins and drummer Al Cross to record the group's 1992 self-titled debut LP. By the time of 1993's Five Hundred Pounds, Wilkins was missing from the line-up; a number of guest musicians fleshed out the recording, among them multi-instrumentalist Kelly Hoppe, who (along with new bassist Garry Lowe) was installed as a permanent member by the 1995 EP Dear Mr. Fantasy. Drummer Walter "Crash" Morgan replaced Cross during Big Sugar's subsequent tour of the U.S.; sadly, while playing a date in Iowa, Morgan died onstage, and was replaced by ex-Odds drummer Paul Brennan in time for the 1996 release of Hemi-Vision. Gavin Brown then assumed Brennan's duties on 1998's Heated. ~ All Music Guide
"Heated" is a 1998 album by Canadian rock band Big Sugar, released on the A&M Records label. It was released in the United States in 1999 on Capricorn Records with an alternate album cover. The album features a cover of Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Let it Ride". HERE

Laura Smith is a Canadian folk singer-songwriter. She is best known for her 1995 single "Shade of Your Love", one of the year's biggest hits on adult contemporary radio stations in Canada, and for her rendition of the Scottish folk song "My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean". Smith was born and raised in London, Ontario. She was encouraged in her early writing by poet Margaret Avison, then writer-in-residence at the University of Western Ontario. She began playing music as well, making her debut in area coffeehouses. She briefly moved to Toronto in 1972, but soon moved to Nova Scotia.
Blessed with a voice that conjures up images as diverse as Joan Armatrading and Tracy Chapman on one hand, to Janis Joplin on the other, Smith delivers a baker's dozen snapshots of a soul on "It's a Personal Thing". HERE

Holly Cole is a Canadian jazz singer, particularly popular in Canada and Japan for both her versatile and distinctive voice, along with her adventurous repertoire, which spans such divergent genres as show tunes, rock, and country music. Like Cassandra Wilson, interpretive singer Holly Cole understands that a pop standard doesn't have to be a song written before President Kennedy was elected. On 1995's Temptation, Cole cannily gave Tom Waits' oeuvre a woman's touch; on Dark Dear Heart, this cover girl lends sultry minimalism to nets ranging from Lennon and McCartney's "I've Just Seen a Face" to Joni Mitchell's "River" to "You Want More," a sinuous Sheryl Crow composition. Other tracks arrive courtesy of lesser-known tunesmiths. "Onion Girl" sounds like a lost Pretenders single but is credited to songwriters Laura Harding and Jeff Hull; Harding also co-wrote the delicate "Make It Go Away," with Cole's pianist, Aaron Davis. Ultimately, though, it's Cole's vocals that define the album; avoiding both stiff reverence and kitsch, she consistently proves that delivering a lyric is as much a creative art as writing one. HERE

MICHAEL JACKSON, one of the most widely beloved entertainers and profoundly influential artists of all-time, leaves an indelible imprint on popular music and culture. Commenting on his passing, Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman, CEO and President, Sony Corporation, said: "Michael Jackson was a brilliant troubadour for his generation, a genius whose music reflected the passion and creativity of an era. His artistry and magnetism changed the music landscape forever. We have been profoundly affected by his originality, creativity and amazing body of work. The entire Sony family extends our deepest condolences to his family and to the millions of fans around the world who loved him." Five of Jackson's solo albums – "Off the Wall," "Thriller," "Bad," "Dangerous" and "HIStory," all with Epic Records, a Sony Music label – are among the top-sellers of all time. During his extraordinary career, he sold an estimated 750 million records worldwide, released 13 No.1 singles and became one of a handful of artists to be inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Guinness Book of World Records recognized Jackson as the Most Successful Entertainer of All Time and "Thriller" as the Biggest Selling Album of All Time. Jackson won 13 Grammy Awards and received the American Music Award's Artist of the Century Award. Michael Jackson started in the music business at the age of 11 with his brothers as a member of the Jackson 5. In the early 1980s, he defined the art form of music video with such ground-breaking videos as "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and the epic "Thriller." Jackson's sound, style and dance moves inspired subsequent generations of pop, soul, R&B and hip-hop artists.
MICHAEL JACKSON & JACKSON 5 - The Motown Years (2008)
This collection is an exhaustive three-disc exploration of the greatest hits released by Michael Jackson and his family band while they were on the Motown label. While factoring in such hits as 'ABC', 'I Want You Back' and 'Rockin' Robin' (one of the most famous appearances of an adolescent Michael Jackson's blistering lead vocals), this release also delves deeper and lets audiences see a more mature side to Michael and his brothers. Though never overly serious, songs like 'Lookin' Through The Windows' and 'Goin' Back To Indiana' show that the group were musically very adept and a consummately professional act.

V.A. - Peter Green Songbook (2000)
His career riddled by drug abuse and paranoia, Peter Green is still regarded by some fans as the greatest white blues guitarist ever, Eric Clapton notwithstanding. As he grew up in London's working-class East End, Green's early musical influences were Hank B. Marvin of the Shadows, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Freddie King, and traditional Jewish music.
Peter Green (born Peter Allen Greenbaum in London) is a British blues-rock guitarist and founder of the band Fleetwood Mac. A figurehead in the British blues movement, Green inspired B. B. King to say, "He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats." Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page have both lauded his guitar playing as well. Green's playing was marked with a distinctive vibrato and economy of style. Though he played other guitars, he is best known for deriving a unique tone from his 1959 Gibson Les Paul - a result of the magnet of his guitar's neck pickup being accidentally reversed to produce an 'out of phase' sound. The Les Paul would come to be referred to as Green's "magic guitar" but Green told Guitar Player in 2000 that "I never had a magic one. Mine wasn't magic...It just barely worked." Green was ranked 38th in Rolling Stone magazine list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time"

11. Tears in Heaven - Ann Peebles
12. Layla - Eric Gales with Derek Trucks
A tribute album that's not a tribute album - at least according to the text on the cover of this CD. In a way, that's correct, since Blues Power includes not merely artists who've been influenced by Clapton, but also artists who've influenced him. Many of these musicians' careers were positively affected by the advent of British blues and the blues revival of the 1960s-events in which Clapton played no small part. So it's fitting that Buddy Guy should appear here, and Bo Diddley, James Cotton, Honeyboy Edwards, and Pinetop Perkins. In addition, younger artists make an appearance, including Larry McCray, Carl Weathersby, Joe Louis Walker, Eric Gales, and Derek Trucks. And for the most part--as one would expect given the caliber of the performers--the material here is very strong. Standouts include Weathersby's hard-grooving take on "Lay Down Sally," Guy's version of "Strange Brew," Walker and Cotton's sexy "Roll It Over," and Perkins's wry "Too Bad." A few of the selections seem to be winks at the listener: for instance, Diddley covers his own "Before You Accuse Me," a song popularized by Creedence Clearwater Revival and more recently recorded by Clapton. The oddest of the lot, though, would have to be "Crossroads," one of the most covered blues songs ever, which Honeyboy Edwards here records in a style more reminiscent of Robert Johnson than of Clapton. It's moments like these that make this album as much a history as it is a tribute. Closing things off is, of course, "Layla," here reinterpreted by young guitar-slingers Gales and Trucks. The closing coda, while different from Clapton's original, perfectly captures its mood. While there are some weak moments--Koko Taylor tones down her characteristic roar for "Blues Power" for some reason - this is a strong album overall, exploring Clapton's strengths as a songwriter and as a bluesman through the eyes of contemporaries, predecessors, and followers. - amazon.com HERE

Throughout a career that has spanned four decades, guitarist Duke Robillard has brought his immense talents to bear on a vast range of blues, jazz, and R&B music. Beginning with his influential band Roomful of Blues, through his brief tenure with Texas blues barn-burners the Fabulous Thunderbirds, to a lengthy solo career that has earned the skilled instrumentalist a wealth of awards and accolades, Duke Robillard has never been content with resting on past laurels as he challenges himself with a variety of stylistic exercises. Robillard's Stomp! The Blues Tonight follows the acclaimed 2008 release A Swingin Session With, a collection of golden-era jazz brought up to speed with a contemporary edge. With Stomp! The Blues Tonight, Robillard has attempted to recreate the authentic sound and energy of 1940s and '50s-era rhythm and blues, the kind of swingin' soul-blues music practiced by singers and guitarists like Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Roy Milton, Lowell Fulson, Pee Wee Crayton and others. To help achieve his goals, Robillard some of his former Roomful of Blues mates: saxophonists Doug James and Rich Lataille and cornet player Al Basile. HERE

CANDYE KANE - Superhero (2009)
Candye Kane is used to shocking audiences when she takes the stage. Dressed in brightly colored feathers, sequins and rhinestones, the self-described “fat black drag queen trapped in a white woman’s body” belts, growls and croons her selection of original blues and classic rock tunes. Sporting a streaked Betty Page hairstyle, the San Diego sexpot is known for her outrageous renditions of “Whole Lotta Love” and “200 Pounds of Fun,” both of which glorify the sensuality of zaftig women. But the blues-belting diva wore only a white hospital gown when she surprised a new audience — her doctors. Miss Kane was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and philosophically told her physician, “If it’s my time to go, I sure have had an amazing ride.” Having lost friends to the disease, Kane knew that pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, often claiming its victims just six months after diagnosis.
One year later, she was pronounced cancer-free, stunning her medical team once again. So it’s no wonder Kane feels like a “Superhero,” to quote the title of her 10th and latest CD. The 15-track CD opens with tough, soulful original songs, such as “Hey! Toughen Up” and closes with “I’m Gonna Be Just Fine,” whose lyrics she says were therapeutic to write. Produced by Delta Groove Music, the recording contains some of Kane’s most personal writing yet.

On this 1986 debut, Steve Earle burst on the scene as a fully-formed songwriting master, synthesizing effortlessly the finest parts of country-folk troubadours like Townes Van Zandt and the anthemic, working-class rock of Bruce Springsteen. "Someday," a country-rock masterpiece about a kid stuck pumping gas in a dead-end town, remains the perfect realization of this style, but with the exception of the slight and silly "Little Rock 'N' Roller," most everything else here (especially "Hillbilly Highway" and the heartbreaking ballad "My Old Friend the Blues") comes awfully close. - amazon.com HERE

Joe Satriani is an American multi-instrumentalist, best known as an instrumental rock guitarist, who has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards. Early in his career, Satriani worked as a guitar instructor, and some of his former students have achieved fame with their guitar skills. Satriani has been a driving force behind other musicians throughout his career, as a founder of the ever-changing touring trio, G3, as well as performing in temporary positions with other musicians. In 1988, Satriani was recruited by the The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger as lead guitarist for the singer's second solo tour. Later, in 1994, Satriani was also the lead guitarist for Deep Purple. Satriani has also worked with a wide range of guitarists from many musical genres, including Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Larry LaLonde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Brian May, Patrick Rondat, Andy Timmons, Paul Gilbert, Adrian Legg, and Robert Fripp through the annual G3 Jam Concerts. He is heavily influenced by famous music icons such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. Since 1988, Satriani has used his own signature guitar, the Ibanez JS Series, which is widely sold in stores. He also has a signature series amplifier, the Peavey JSX, and a signature Vox distortion pedal, the Satchurator. - wikipedia HERE

Since divesting himself of the other members of Ten Years After, Alvin Lee's music, both here and on the previous In Flight, has taken on a stronger R&B feel and focused on his vocal abilities as much as his guitar. Pump Iron follows the same pattern as its predecessor—a solid, upbeat-R & B-meets-Anglo-flash format with Lee backed by well-known friends (Boz Scaggs, Ian Wallace, Mel Collins and others) who perform with restrained expertise. Lee still spins a few "Goin' Home" riffs ("Burnt Fungus") and even adds a love song ("The Darkest Night") but most of this album is white, English and hard. Those who remember Lee only as the finale to the movie Woodstock may find the diversity of Pump Iron appealing. - rollingstone.com HERE

15. Hopelessly Miss You (previously unreleased)
Even if you accept that a best-of for Gregg Allman can focus wholly on his solo career (as this one does) and not include any of his work with the Allman Brothers, this could not by any stretch be considered "the best of Gregg Allman." It's really the best of what he's recorded for Sony, which is really an entirely different animal. That means there's nothing from his three 1970s albums, which most listeners would view as containing his best solo work; the chronological stretch on this comp only covers the last half of the 1980s and the 1990s. Like, say, Rod Stewart, this was a time in which his recordings had really only a shadow of their old power, although (like Stewart) his voice was still in good shape and he didn't stoop to levels as low as Stewart did. Given the pool of what it has to work with, this disc is a reasonable selection, evenly spread between highlights of the I'm No Angel, Just Before the Bullets Fly, and Searching for Simplicity albums. And there are a few extras that might make this worth getting for Allman completists: previously unreleased live cuts from 1987 ("Melissa") and 1998 (his long-lived staple cover of Jackson Browne's "These Days"), a studio outtake from 1985, and "Brother to Brother," a duet with Lori Yates that was on the 1989 Next of Kin soundtrack. Overall, though, it's hardly a guide to even some of his best work, the 1980s tracks suffering from slick period production and unmemorable AOR material. His voice is certainly operating at a level above the quality of many of the songs, and is better served by the occasional cuts on which the blues-soul elements come more to the foreground, like "I've Got News for You" and the cover of "Dark End of the Street." - allmusic.com HERE

Certainly one of the most flamboyant New Orleans pianists in recent memory, James Carroll Booker III (1939-1983) was a major influence on the local rhythm & blues scene in the '50s and '60s.
This aptly named disc showcases James Booker's piano playing; his stretches and runs are breathtaking in their fluidity. This disc (along with its Rounder partner, Resurrection of the Bayou Maharajah) was culled from some 60 or so hours of tapes that John Parsons recorded at the Maple Leaf Bar from 1977 to 1982. The main difference in the music on the two discs is that this one is purely instrumental. In fact listen to this version of "Papa Was a Rascal," and then listen to the rendition on Resurrection, and what you have is two almost entirely different entities. This disc is made up roughly of what might be called piano bar standards, such as "Sunny Side of the Street" and "Eleanor Rigby," but regardless of how many times you have heard this fare, Booker manages to make each song sound fresh and vital. A special debt of gratitude must go to both Scott Billington and John Parsons for the care taken with this recorded legacy. ~ All Music Guide HERE

TRAPEZE
Trapeze were an English rock band formed in March 1969, by vocalist John Jones and guitarist/keyboardist Terry Rowley (who named the band), with guitarist Mel Galley, singer/bassist Glenn Hughes, and drummer Dave Holland. The band had a fairly fluid line up, finally dissolving in 1994, and although they never found commercial success themselves, several members went on to join better known bands including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Judas Priest and Uriah Heep. The core and more familiar line-up of the band was Glenn Hughes, Mel Galley and Dave Holland. After Glenn Hughes' departure in June 1973, Galley and Holland decided to try to keep the band together, which they did with constantly members varying until 1979 when Holland went on to join Judas Priest. At this point the band broke up. Holland tried to revive the band in 1990, after leaving Priest, but the band finally broke up in 1994. Their first three albums remain their best known and most commercially successful.

"Trapeze" is the 1970 debut rock album by the band Trapeze. The album was produced by John Lodge, of Moody Blues fame.

Not only is "Medusa" the finest offering from '70s outfit Trapeze, it is one of the decade's most underappreciated hard rock recordings. With a lineup that consisted of future Deep Purple, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath members, there seems to be proof that at least a few fellow musicians appreciated this 1971 offering. Fans of his later work might be surprised by Glenn Hughes' soulful vocal delivery, especially on the mid-tempo blues-rockers like "Black Cloud" and "Your Love Is Alright." Guitarist Mel Galley also deserves mention for his sparse approach to classic rock riffing that is catchy and affective. Even the ballads are focused, memorable, and unique. There are some melodic moments on the closing title track that sound almost as if a '90s alt-rock crooner composed them. Considering that Medusa predates many similar, and more successful, classic rock LPs from the likes of Bad Company, Nazareth, Foreigner, and others, it's a wonder that the record isn't mentioned more when influential albums of this era are discussed. ~ All Music Guide

.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Though they were best known for a kind of muscular funk rock, the band Trapeze always had a jazzy element, and on "You Are The Music...We're Just The Band" it is the softer tunes that stand out. This isn't to say that there aren't some good rockers here, since the title tune and "Keepin' Time" are energetic and enjoyable. However it is on "Coast to Coast" and "What Is a Woman's Role" that the band really shines. This is partly because both are really good songs, partly because both benefit from some inspired sax and vibes work from guests Jimmy Hastings and Frank Ricotti. Vocalist Glenn Hughes takes the lead on most tracks, and is very effective as long as he stays in his low range; on the rock tracks he uses his higher register, which tends to have a squealing or screechy tone. Those who only know Hughes from his subsequent work with Deep Purple may be surprised to hear his warm, soulful work on this disc, which was his last with Trapeze. ~ All Music Guide

BRIAN MAY & FRIENDS - Star Fleet Project (1983)
Star Fleet Project is a project of Brian May, most famous as the guitarist from Queen, which resulted in an album with the same name. The project was released as the work of "Brian May + Friends", consisting of May, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alan Gratzer (of REO Speedwagon), Phil Chen (session bassist who played with Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart), and Fred Mandel (session keyboard player who also played as additional keyboard player on Hot Space World Tour and The Works). Roger Taylor, Queen's drummer, provided backing vocals for the title song. It was not meant for the tapes to be released and they had minimal mixing before release. "I could have put away these tapes in a bottom drawer and kept them as a private record of one of the best experiences of my life. But the few people I've played them for have urged me to 'publish'...I haven't messed one scrap with the tracking done on the day. The rest is simply mixed 'naked'."
Recorded on the 21st and 22 April 1983 at the Record Plant Studios, Los Angeles, it was released in October of the same year as a "Mini LP", a "Challenge to the established principle that a piece of rock music must fit into either a 2x4 minute single, or a 2x20 minute LP format". The LP consisted of three songs: "Star Fleet", "Let Me Out", and "Blues Breaker". HERE

Tattoo You is another undisputed classic and rightly topped the US charts for nine weeks on its original release in 1981. Its opening track and first single, Start Me Up, remains one of the band's best loved songs and a mainstay of their live set. The cleverly sequenced Tattoo You comprises six rock tracks, including the US Top 20 hit Hang Fire, the fast blues of Black Limousine, Richards' lead vocal on Little T & A, and the sneering Neighbours, but the five ballads which follow - and formed the second side of the original vinyl - really lift it into another league. The sweet soul of Worried About You, Tops and the sublime Waiting On A Friend, featuring jazz great Sonny Rollins on saxophone, in particular show what a fine singer Jagger is. Corriston's cover design won a Grammy Award for best album package. HERE

Hindu Love Gods was a short-lived American blues project basically consisting of three quarters of R.E.M. (without singer Michael Stipe) and Warren Zevon. Singer Bryan Cook was also involved. Formed in Athens, Georgia in 1984, the original line-up included Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass), Bill Berry (drums – then still with R.E.M.), plus Warren Zevon on vocals and piano. This line-up released one single, "Narrator", without much success. Buck, Mills and Berry joined Zevon on his album Sentimental Hygiene (1987). During an all-night (and supposedly drunken) session using remaining studio time after the completion of Zevon's album, the four recorded ten cover songs, mostly blues standards. Although originally not intended for publication, these recordings were finally released by Giant Records on the album Hindu Love Gods (1990). The song that received the most attention was a rock version of Prince's 1985 hit "Raspberry Beret", which reached #23 on the Modern Rock charts. During a concert at The Shadow in Kansas City in December 1990, Zevon commented that the album was "selling by the shitload," whereupon one of his backing band informed him that it was "selling like shit." - wikipedia HERE

Moody and mesmerizing, An American Prayer is an interesting album of Jim Morrison reading his poetry over the Doors' music. An American Prayer was finished by the remaining members of the Doors after Morrison's death and finally released in 1978 (it was remastered and re-released in 1995 with bonus tracks). Those familiar with the lyrics of the Doors will not be surprised, but others may be put off because Morrison is unafraid to use crude imagery and talk unabashedly about taboo topics such as sex and religion. Although many dismiss his poetry as simplistic random musings, Morrison is a gifted lyricist with a vivid imagination. The album also demonstrates how the other musicians in the band create a mood that breathes life into Morrison's dark, twisted visions. The music excerpts of "Peace Frog" and "Wasp (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)" provide a welcome air of familiarity, and the definitive live version of "Roadhouse Blues" in the middle of the album provides a nice respite from the barrage of stories and metaphors. However, An American Prayer must be listened to in one sitting to be fully appreciated, preferably at nighttime when one is alone and can devote full attention to the listening experience. This album is not for everyone, but is a must-own for Doors completists and fans of Jim Morrison's poetry. - All Music Guide HERE

Absolutely Live is the first live album released by American rock band The Doors in 1970. Many shows were recorded during the 1970 tour to create the “Absolutely Live” album. The Doors producer, and long time collaborator Paul Rothchild painstakingly edited the album from many different shows to create one cohesive concert. For example, the best part of a song from the Detroit show may have been spliced together with another part of the same song from the Boston show, again trying to create “the ultimate concert”. It can become very difficult to identify what parts are from what shows. Rothchild has said “I couldn’t get complete takes of a lot of songs, so sometimes I’d cut from Detroit to Philadelphia in midsong. There must be 2,000 edits on that album”. - wikipedia HERE

America is an American folk rock musical band, composed originally of members Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell, and Dan Peek. The three members were barely past their teenage years when they became a musical sensation during 1972, with their main popularity during the early to mid 1970s and early 1980s. Some of the band's best known songs are "A Horse with No Name", "Sister Golden Hair" (both of which reached #1), "Ventura Highway", "Tin Man", and "Lonely People". Although their music was derided frequently by critics, the band's singles and albums were very successful commercially. They were popular enough to attract the services of famed Beatles producer George Martin for a series of seven albums. The band survived Peek quitting near its peak long enough to see Beckley and Bunnell return the act to the top 10 as a duo with "You Can Do Magic" in 1982. Touring for almost four decades, America maintains fans and performs over 100 shows per year. - wikipedia HERE

BARBARA LYNN
Singer/guitarist Barbara Lynn was a rare commodity during her heyday. Not only was she a female instrumentalist (one of the very first to hit the charts), but she also played left-handed - quite well at that - and even wrote some of her own material. Lynn's music often straddled the line between blues and Southern R&B, and since much of her early work -- including the number one R&B hit "You'll Lose a Good Thing" - was recorded in New Orleans, it bore the sonic imprint of the Crescent City. Lynn was born Barbara Lynn Ozen in Beaumont, TX, on January 16, 1942; she played the piano as a child before switching to guitar, inspired by Elvis Presley. In junior high, Lynn formed her own band, Bobbie Lynn and the Idols; at this point, her musical role models veered between bluesmen (Guitar Slim, Jimmy Reed) and female pop singers (Brenda Lee, Connie Francis). After winning a few talent shows and playing some teen dances, the still-underage Lynn started working the local clubs and juke joints, risking getting kicked out of school if she had been discovered. Singer Joe Barry caught her live act and recommended her to his friend, producer/impresario Huey P. Meaux, aka the Crazy Cajun. With her parents' consent, Meaux brought Lynn to New Orleans to record at the legendary Cosimo's studio. Lynn cut a few singles for the Jamie label with the understanding that if none hit, she was to attend college instead of pursuing music right off the bat. In 1962, her self-penned ballad "You'll Lose a Good Thing" became a national hit, reaching the pop Top Ten and climbing all the way to number one on the R&B charts. Her first album (of the same name) was also released that year, featuring ten of her originals among its 12 tracks. Lynn continued to record for Jamie up through 1965, producing follow-up R&B hits like "You're Gonna Need Me" and "Oh Baby (We Got a Good Thing Goin')," the latter of which was recorded by the Rolling Stones in 1965. In 1966, Lynn switched over to Meaux's Tribe label and cut "You Left the Water Running," which became something of an R&B standard and was covered by the likes of Otis Redding. In 1967, she signed with Atlantic and had another R&B hit with "This Is the Thanks I Get" early the following year; she also issued another album, Here Is Barbara Lynn, in 1968. Lynn scored one last hit for Atlantic in 1972's "(Until Then) I'll Suffer," but by this point, she had several children to worry about raising; dissatisfied with her promotion anyway, she wound up effectively retiring from the music business for most of the '70s and '80s, though she did play the occasional low-key tour.
Lynn returned to music in the mid-'80s, touring Japan for the first time in 1984; she later cut a live album there, called You Don't Have to Go, which was eventually issued in the States by Ichiban. Lynn had managed to retain a cult following among connoisseurs of American soul and blues in several different pockets of the world, and toured internationally during the early '90s. In 1994, Bullseye Blues issued her first full-fledged studio album in over two decades, So Good; Until Then I'll Suffer followed in 1996. Lynn later caught on with the respected blues label Antone's, and in 2000 she cut Hot Night Tonight, which featured a couple of raps by her son Bachelor Wise. ~ All Music Guide

11. Will the Circle Be Unbroken
12. Beauty of Life
In April 1999, Marshall Tucker bandleader Doug Gray's mother was killed in a two-car automobile accident just weeks before the release of the spiritual album Gospel. Part of the sad irony is that one of the many great songs on Gospel is "Momma Don't Cry Anymore," a song co-written by Gray as a tribute to his father, who passed away a few years ago. Throughout the 12-song set, Gray performs some of his finest from-the-heart vocals to date. Every song on Gospel is a treat, especially to someone who was raised in the Southern Baptist church, and grew up listening to and playing old gospel songs himself. It is obvious even on the first listen that there is a higher power at work, helping the music flow. Gray, Tim Lawter and Rusty Milner are to be commended for their finest production efforts yet, bringing a major studio sound to CD from their small, self-owned home studio in Spartanburg. The addition of Ronald Radford's steel guitar, plus some amazing work from Milner, Lawter and Steve Poole (who plays both piano and organ), and the absolute brilliance of Dave Muse on sax and flute, helps give this entire album the feeling of vintage Marshall Tucker Band. Gray sings "Eye Is on the Sparrow" with his daughter Gabrielle; also included is "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," a regular feature of their '70s shows. Tim Lawter closes out the set by singing "Beauty of Life," a tune written by Milner. The song holds the perfect message to close out this recording: "It's not too late to say I'm sorry, It's not too late to say I want to change." In 1991, the group recorded an excellent album called Southern Spirit; with Gospel, they have tapped into the real Southern spirit. ~ All Music Guide HERE

This collection of 20 of Don's greatest hits is a great collection for all fans of the smooth side of country music and for fans of great storytelling, which is what country music at its best basically is. Every song speaks for itself. While most of the songs on here feature his smooth side, "Tulsa Time" may get the fan out on the dance floor doing the two step or the "Slappin' Leather" line dance. Don's interpretation of "Amanda" (which was later a #1 hit for Waylon Jennings) is as good as anything else he has done and is very heart-wrenching. Smooth country music back in the 1970's doesn't get much better than this, so this collection is a must have for your collection. HERE

Rhino Bucket is a hard rock band from California. The band was formed in 1988 by Georg Dolivo (guitars and lead vocals), Greg Fields (guitars), Reeve Downes (bass), and Rick Kubach (drums). This lineup played the Los Angeles rock scene for a year with contemporaries such as Junkyard, The Four Horsemen, The Sea Hags and countless others. Warner Brothers signed the band in 1989 and they released their self-titled debut in 1990 with Liam Jason (Warrior) on drums. On this new CD we find Georg Dolivo and Reeve Downes joined by Kix guitarist Brian Forsythe and the return of former AC/DC drummer Simon Wright. On "The Hardest Town" you'll find that aside from a face or two nothing has changed. Rhino Bucket continues to pay homage to the classic rock of the 70's. "The Hardest Town", much like their previous work, is a power-chord bonanza that includes a gravelly melodic vocal that will have you immediately thinking of Bon Scott. HERE

Master blues harmonica player Corky Siegel (former co-founder of the legendary Chicago Siegel-Schwall Band) fuses traditional blues with a classical string quartet (plus a percussionist), creating a new genre of music that has its own flavor as it switches moods: from smoky to jaunty to rapid-fire to melancholy. This is a bold amalgamation of styles (the follow-up to Siegel's successful 1994 release, Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues) that works because of Siegel's mastery of the Blues and Classical worlds. Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues brings to classical music the same creative genius and instrumental virtuosity which Corky brought to traditional Chicago blues during the heyday of the legendary Siegel-Schwall Band, fronted by Corky and guitarist Jim Schwall during the late '60s and early '70s. Even then, Corky had begun juxtaposing the two musical genres, not, as he explains, "by performing Brahms on the blues harmonica or begging a symphony to play Hoochie Coochie Man." Instead, Corky, in effect, concocted a pure hybrid, crossing the blues and the classical to form a new musical strain. If you will, a third stream blues: Chamber Blues. - cdbaby.com HERE

Texas-based singer, songwriter and guitarist Shawn Pittman attended the Albert King / Jimmie Vaughan school of blues guitar playing. He's not flashy, and he realizes the spaces between the notes are as important as the notes themselves. Tone and melody are just as important, to Pittman's way of thinking, than fast and flashy runs up and down the guitar neck.
Shawn plans on recording his fifth release beginning in July, 2008 and looks to establish himself as a force to be reckoned with among the Texas Blues Scene. HERE

11. Old Friend
These southern-rock road warriors' first studio album since 1994 is surprisingly solid: Returning guitarist Warren Haynes - the best axman to pass through the band since Duane Allman - plays with a steely, tensile power, while youngblood Derek Trucks (drummer Butch Trucks' nephew) counterpoints with mellower, more even-keeled lines. It's an effective restatement of the original chemistry between Duane and ex-guitarist Dickey Betts. The other pieces are in place as well: Gregg Allman's gruff, soulful vocals and cool Hammond organ, Oteil Burbridge's melodic, groove-laden bass work, and the rhythmic sizzle of three percussionists. The freewheeling "Instrumental Illness" lets the guitarists riff, climb and, well, hit the note for another dozen minutes. There's nothing radically new going on here, but the level of engagement is noteworthy. - rollingstone.com HERE

"More Than A New Discovery" is the debut album by Bronx-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro. It was recorded during 1966 and released at the beginning of the following year on the Folkways imprint of the Verve label (this imprint was changed to Verve/Forecast after Verve was threatened with legal action by Moses Asch who owned the Folkways label. The album was reissued, with a revised track order and with the song "Hands Off the Man" retitled to "Flim Flam Man", in 1973 by Columbia Records as The First Songs. It is this version that survives on CD formats, and gave Nyro a chart entry at #97 on the Billboard 200, then known as the Pop Albums chart. The album is notable for producing a trove of hits for other artists. Blood Sweat and Tears scored with "And When I Die" (US #2), The 5th Dimension with "Wedding Bell Blues" (US #1) and "Blowin' Away" (US #21), and Barbra Streisand with "Stoney End" (US #6). "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession" is an album by New York-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro, released in 1968. Nyro peaked early, and Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, just her second album, remains her best. It's not only because it contains the original versions of no less than three songs that were big hits for other artists: "Sweet Blindness" (covered by the 5th Dimension), "Stoned Soul Picnic" (also covered by the 5th Dimension), and "Eli's Comin'" (done by Three Dog Night). It's not even just because those three songs are so outstanding. It's because the album as a whole is so outstanding, with its invigorating blend of blue-eyed soul, New York pop, and early confessional singer/songwriting. Nyro sang of love, inscrutably enigmatic romantic daredevils, getting drunk, lonely women, and sensual desire with an infectious joie de vivre. The arrangements superbly complemented the material with lively brass, wailing counterpoint backup vocals, and Nyro's own ebullient piano. The 2002 CD reissue adds three previously unreleased demos, with no instrumental accompaniment save piano, of "Lu," "Stoned Soul Picnic," and "Emmie." HERE

Spooky Tooth were one of Island Records' finest acts, yet never quite scaled the upper echelons of the late 60's / early 70's rock hierarchy. Always a band much loved by writers and fellow musicians, they lacked the commercial sucker punch that would've catapulted them to the toppermost of the poppermost. It didn't stop them making some corking records, however. The Spooky Tooth story (for those of us who are into this sort of thing), if you want to wax analytical about it, provides the perfect paradigm of how various members of disparate 60's British Beat bands pooled their musical resources and mutated into a psychedelic / progressive outfit. The story begins in summer 1963, in Carlisle, Cumbria, in the far North-West of England. Jimmy Henshaw (guitar, keyboards), Walter Johnstone (drums), Frank Kenyan (guitar) and former export clerk Mike Harrison (vocals) formed a beat combo, and dubbed themselves The VIPs. Johnston and Kenyan had previously been in The Teenagers; not long after forming the band, The VIPs added Greg Ridley on bass, who had previously lined up with Dino & The Danubes, and The Dakotas and The Ramrods, together with Harrison. They scored a record deal with RCA, who put out their debut single, "She's So Good" / "Don't Keep Shouting At Me" in 1964, both sides being penned by Henshaw. The single is a great slice of sneery Brit R&B, and is now an ultra-rare collector's favourite. From 1965 to 1966 the band were a top club attraction in London, and gigged regularly at the Star Club in Hamburg...spookytooth.sk/bio.html HERE

Grammy Award-winning blues legend KOKO TAYLOR, died on June 3, 2009 in her hometown of Chicago, IL, as a result of complications following her May 19 surgery to correct a gastrointestinal bleed. On May 7, 2009, the critically acclaimed Taylor, known worldwide as the “Queen of the Blues,” won her 29th Blues Music Award (for Traditional Female Blues Artist Of The Year), making her the recipient of more Blues Music Awards than any other artist. In 2004 she received the NEA National Heritage Fellowship Award, which is among the highest honors given to an American artist. Her most recent CD, 2007’s Old School, was nominated for a Grammy (eight of her nine Alligator albums were Grammy-nominated). She won a Grammy in 1984 for her guest appearance on the compilation album Blues Explosion on Atlantic.
Over the course of her 40-plus-year career, Taylor received every award the blues world has to offer. On March 3, 1993, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley honored Taylor with a “Legend Of The Year” Award and declared “Koko Taylor Day” throughout Chicago. In 1997, she was inducted into the Blues Foundation’s Hall of Fame. A year later, Chicago Magazine named her “Chicagoan Of The Year” and, in 1999, Taylor received the Blues Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2009 Taylor performed in Washington, D.C. at The Kennedy Center Honors honoring Morgan Freeman.
Koko Taylor was one of very few women who found success in the male-dominated blues world. She took her music from the tiny clubs of Chicago’s South Side to concert halls and major festivals all over the world. She shared stages with every major blues star, including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, B.B. King, Junior Wells and Buddy Guy as well as rock icons Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.

Demi Evans grew up in the heart of North Dallas in the 60’s. An unconditional fan of Nina Simone, she revendicates the militant and humanistic heritage. Demi propose an unclassable style of music that’s transparent and direct, with a surprising mix of southern soul and commited folk pop but she never forgets the gospel and blues which were the roots of her childhood in Texas. Recruited by a modeling agency, she financed her studies of acting by lending her silhouette to some of the most famous designers of america. After moving to New-York, Germany and Paris, she met Jean-Jacques Milteau (famous blues harp player) who put her immediately into his band. She released her first album " Why Do You Run " two years ago. Here is, now, her new album « My America », co-written with Fred Morisset and co-produced with Fred and Jean-Michel Kajdan (famous guitarist and Producer). HERE

10. Slave Driver
Fans of the various Neville Brothers incarnations will be pleased with Brand New Blues, a fantastic new release from Cyril Neville. With the help of fellow Nevilles Art, Ian, and Ivan, as well as Waylon Thibodeaux and Tab Benoit, Cyril lets fly with an accomplished batch of super-slinky blues and R&B that remains consistent with his affection for New Orleans musical traditions and his interests in human rights and environmental causes. Neville delivers fine original tracks and some excellently chosen covers on Brand New Blues, including Bobby "Blue" Bland's "I'll Take Care Of You" and, as the album's closer, a lengthy and astoundingly great version of Bob Marley's "Slave Driver," which Neville has customized with heartfelt and angry lyrics about the continuing political failure to restore New Orleans to pre-Katrina conditions. This is Cyril Neville's first solo album in over eight years, and releases such as this make one wish he were more prolific, but we'll take what we can get. Highly recommended. HERE

09. Country Boogie
10. The Blues Lover
Roy Buchanan was one of America's most soulful masters of the electric guitar. Even posthumously, he commands the ardent respect of his fellow guitarists and a devoted army of fans. The Buchanan sound is totally unique: heartbreaking, searing solos, trademark shimmering tone, and a mixture of snarls, wails and squeals that mark him as a wizard of the instrument. He was a pioneer in the use of controlled harmonics, and although this technique has been used by rock's greatest guitarists, especially Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson and Z.Z. Top's Billy Gibbons, all acknowledge Buchanan as the master.
The late guitarist's twelfth and last recording has stretches when he slows his attack down, thinks methodically, and takes heed of form and direction; at such times his storytelling is immensely more concise than usual. To hell with believable stories, though; the instrumental "High Wire" is wilder and more fantastic than a whirling dervish jling knives on a trampoline. - amazon.com HERE

Freddie King also known as Freddy King and "The Texas Cannonball" was an influential African-American blues guitarist and singer. He perfected his own guitar style based on Texas and Chicago influences and was one of the first artists to have a multi-racial backing band on stage with him at live performances. He is known for his recordings such as "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" (1960) and his top 40 hit "Hide Away" (1961), as well as albums such as Let's Hideaway and dance (1961) and Burglar (1974). King had a twenty year recording career and became established as an influential guitarist. He inspired American musicians including Bill Freeman, Denny Campbell and Jimmie Vaughan, also mid 1960's UK British Blues reivalists such as Eric Clapton, Chicken Shack and Peter Green. King died from heart failure on December 28, 1976, aged forty two.
Similar to his first Shelter outing (Getting Ready), but with more of a rock feel. That's due as much to the material as the production. Besides covering tunes by Jimmy Rogers, Howlin' Wolf, and Elmore James, King tackles compositions by Leon Russell and, more unexpectedly, Bill Withers, Isaac Hayes-David Porter, and John Fogerty (whose "Lodi" is reworked into "Lowdown in Lodi"). King's own pen remained virtually in retirement, as he wrote only one of the album's tracks. - All Music Guide. HERE

"Rickie Lee Jones" is the eponymously titled debut album of Chicago-born musician Rickie Lee Jones, released in March 1979. After arriving in California in the mid-1970s, Jones started writing songs more seriously and by 1977 had met a pair of singer-songwriters, Chuck E. Weiss and Tom Waits, who became her lover during this period. The album was released in the spring of 1979 to favourable reviews, propelled by the substantial jazz-pop hit single "Chuck E.'s in Love," based on a rumoured romance of her friend Weiss. The single became a US #4 hit during the summer, while the album, which went on to become a million seller, hit US #3. A second single, "Young Blood," cracked the US Top 40 in late 1979, when Jones went on an international tour. The album cover contributed to the image of Jones as a cool beret-wearing beatnik; it was reported at the time that Jones was a heavy drinker and also a drug addict, and she and Tom Waits were, in some quarters, known as rock music's bohemian couple. The music videos for the album's two hit singles also contribute to Jones' "hipster chic" image, and in 1979 she featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, becoming one of the most successful music stars of the year. The album cover photography and design was by Norman Seeff. HERE

AYNSLEY LISTER - Equilibrium (2009)

06. Big Sleep
07. Running On Empty
08. Superficial
09. Early Morning Dew
10. Running Out On Me
11. Sugar Low
12. Hurricane
It’s blues but it has been given a breath of fresh air, a modern twist, and an enthusiastically contagious energy. These ingredients have, for some time, made Aynsley one of the acts to catch on the circuit. With Equilibrium he pulls it all together on a expertly constructed album that has both his voice and guitar reaching all their potential. Amazingly it is already ten years since Aynsley Lister released his first self-titled debut album. Now this year sees his latest, Equilibrium, a record that promises to confirm his already widespread reputation as one of the world’s most exciting young bluesmen. For Equilibrium he is joined by Robbie McIntosh (John Mayer) whose additional guitars alongside those of Simon Johnson gives the album an additional dimension. Having said that Aynsley Lister’s own guitar playing is, of course, superb and driving riffs flow throughout. There is something Joe Bonamassa in his work. That excitement, understanding, and talent are all natural gifts. He makes it sound effortless as though he was born to play it. This is of course a vital blues ingredient. HERE

14. Bigfoot
For more than 30 years and nine albums, Rick fronted the jumping, swinging Little Charlie & The Nightcats, featuring guitarist Little Charlie Baty. With Baty's recent retirement from touring, Estrin - along with the Nightcats longtime rhythm section of J. Hansen and Lorenzo Farrell and a new member, fiery guitarist Kid Andersen - takes the lead on his own. The band's debut album, Twisted, while still swinging the blues, is a harmonica-driven, rocking, guitar-fueled rave-up. Featuring 14 songs (including 10 Estrin originals, two by Kid Andersen, one by Hansen, and a superb band-created instrumental), Twisted showcases Rick's seemingly effortless command of the harmonica, his streetwise vocals and his remarkable original songs. Estrin is an amazing harmonica player, a soulful lead vocalist and a brilliant original songwriter. Estrin's harmonica sings alongside blues tunes that entertain audiences like no other in the genre. - amazon.com HERE
