Pink Floyd - Compilations (3)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

"Relics" is a compilation album by Pink Floyd released in 1971. The album was released on 14 May in the UK and 15 July in the United States. A re-mastered CD was released in 1996 with a different album cover - a three-dimensional version of the original sketch drawn by drummer Nick Mason for the initial release. The release of Relics was sparked by the success of Atom Heart Mother which peaked at #1 on the British charts. The album has been released on numerous occasions, and at times without the proper authority. One such incident involved EMI Australia releasing the album without the band's consent. This led to the LP being withdrawn and the album as a result became a rarity. *

"A Collection of Great Dance Songs" is a compilation album by Pink Floyd released on 23 November 1981 on Harvest/EMI in the UK and Columbia Records in the U.S. originally. The album was released against the will of Roger Waters. The title is facetious, given that Pink Floyd is not known for making particularly danceable music. This is perhaps evidenced by the album art, which featured a photograph of ballroom dancers guyed to the ground so they cannot move. The Hipgnosis design team did the cover under the pseudonym TCP after falling out with Roger Waters a few years earlier. The inner sleeve had pictures of dancers in either a white (UK) or black (U.S.) background. The picture labels were a black background with blue lines and red sketch lined dancers on side one and reverse on side two. *

"Works" is a Pink Floyd compilation album released in 1983 by their former American label, Capitol Records, to compete with their then-current album The Final Cut. The main interest for collectors is the track "Embryo," an outtake from Ummagumma that later became a concert staple in a greatly elongated form, which originally only appeared in January 1970 on a scarce various artists compilation album promoting Pink Floyd's UK label Harvest Records entitled Picnic - A Breath of Fresh Air. Also unique to Works, the tracks "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse" are presented as alternate versions, possibly stereo mixes from the master tapes of the quadraphonic edition The Dark Side of the Moon.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - The Greatest Songs Of Woody Guthrie (1972)

Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie (1912 – 1967) is best known as an American singer-songwriter and folk musician, whose musical legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional and children's songs, ballads and improvised works.

This 23-track, 70-minute disc, assembled from recordings dating from the 50s and the 60s, is by now a historical document tracing the kinds of interpretations offered by the first generation of folksingers to be influenced by Guthrie, some of whom were his contemporaries. For the most part, the singers, who include The Weavers, Odetta, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Cisco Huston, and Joan Baez, offer covers of Guthrie favorites that are sweeter and more conventional than the originals. Thankfully, they are interspersed with a handful of tunes featuring Guthrie himself.

ERIC CLAPTON - Peace In Our Time (1988)

Soundtrack by Eric Clapton. 1988 documentary about the Munich Crisis and the betrayal of Czechoslovakia.

ERIC CLAPTON: "I just did some film music for a tv documentary about the beginning of the Second World War, because it's the fiftieth year of the Munich Agreement with Hitler and Chamberlain, and a Czechoslavakian company asked me to do the music and I was a bit lost when I first thought about it...And when I saw the footage , which is archive black and white material, I just wrote a very simple kind of blues progression and got some string players in and set it to a kind of philharmonic setting and it still works, which is an example of the fact that I always think from a blues point of view and try to frame it in different ways to make it palatable." *

ELOY - Cronicles I & II (1993/94)

Eloy is a German progressive rock band, whose musical style includes symphonic and space rock, the latter theme being more prevalent on earlier albums. Despite their nationality and time period, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive rock groups such as Pink Floyd, Badfinger and Yes. Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group.

Chronicles I is the first of a two parts re-recorded hits compilation by German progressive rock band Eloy released in 1993. He invited some of the former members of the band to play on the album. The album also contains one previously unreleased track from the album Destination (1992). *

BOOKER T. JONES - Potato Hole (2009)

Hammond B3 alchemist Booker T. Jones is one America's most prolific, distinguished and instantly recognizable musical forces, and the arrival of his new Anti- album, Potato Hole, not only re-affirms his greatness, it also re-introduces the neglected all-instrumental format to a noisy, crowded marketplace crying out for precisely the type of soul satisfying pleasure which Jones excels at. With choice accompaniment by the capable Southern rock visionaries Drive By Truckers and a sound often pushed into over drive by the volcanic lead guitar of rock & roll legend Neil Young, it is an altogether extraordinary set. Featuring a mixture of newly written songs and a trio of intriguing covers, all recorded in a scant one weeks time, Potato Hole captures Booker T at the critical peak of a renewed creative phase in his storied career. "I really feel like I've been opened up again, I've got the creative muse working for me," Jones said. "It's like I have discovered a new method, a little road I can take to open it up, and I'm excited about playing this music."

Booker is known as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, record producer, and arranger, and is best known for fronting Booker T and the MGs. This is his first solo album in decades. He teamed with southern rockers Drive-By Truckers to produce an album that is raw and edgy, fun and innovative. And just to seal the deal, long-time Booker associate Neil Young dropped by to play blistering lead guitar on nine of the ten tracks

TOM RUSSELL - Indians Cowboys Horses Dogs (2004)

01. Tonight We Ride
02. Seven Curses
03. El Paso
04. All This Way For The Short Ride
05. Bucking Horse Moon
06. Lily, Rosemary, And The Jack Of Hearts
07. No Telling
08. Bacon Rind, Chief Seattle, The Ballad Of Ira Hayes
09. Old Blue
10. East Texas Red
11. The Ballad Of Edward Abbey
12. Little Blue Horse

Tom Russell is an American singer-songwriter. Although most identified with the Texas Country music tradition, his music also incorporates elements of folk, Tex-Mex and the cowboy music of the American West. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Dave Alvin, Suzy Bogguss and more. Tom Russell returns to the Old West with a renewed vision, as this collection of inspired originals and choice covers attests. The album's centerpiece features Eliza Gilkyson and Joe Ely trading verses with Russell on Bob Dylan's epic "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts," while another Dylan tune, the little-heard "Seven Curses," proves a highlight as well. Russell's reading of "El Paso" refreshes the classic by refusing to mimic Marty Robbins's original, while a pair of Russell's spoken-word vignettes provide preamble to "The Ballad of Ira Hayes." While the songbooks of Woody Guthrie and Linda Thompson also inspire evocative interpretations, Russell's own songs hold their own in such distinguished company. He applies his literary sensibility to a Western legacy that extends from bounty hunters to rodeo bull riders, while his "Ballad of Edward Abbey," a tribute to the naturalist, serves as an environmental broadside on how the new West has raped the old. *

Patrick Pleau’s claim to fame came in 2007 along with his band Plajia and the release Beautiful Explosion; an album for which Patrick wrote the majority of the lyrics and music. Beautiful Explosion was nominated in 2008 for Archambault’s ‘Grand Prix de la relčve’ (with fellow nomeniees : Tricot Machine, Samian, Alfa Rococo, Gaële, Le Husky & Bruno Marcil).

Hype-Moi, Patrick’s first solo project produced by Bob & Bill (Guy Dubuc and Marc Lessard) ranges from urban to oneiric themes. Several songs also make light of his “Geek / Internet” persona; tongue-in-cheek references to his past reputations. Raised in a musical environment (Patrick’s father was a DJ), it is with this first francophone release that he refined his lyrical stylings which he describes as “Peter Pan-like controlled naiveté” with songs written between 2002 and 2008 (including previously unreleased tracks from Plajia). Hype-Moi could be considered as the logical follow-up to Beautiful Explosion, with more of a masterful production and craftier songs (as shown by its first radio-single; Bacolophobe). Though seemingly provocative, the album’s title Hype-Moi (Hype-Me) is a humorous invitation — one that should not be taken as a direct assault against critics but might recommend a different approach with which to showcase up-and-coming artists. Further following the example set by Beautiful Explosion, on Hype-Moi Patrick carefully utilizes sonic landscapes of popular 70s instruments such as Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer keys.

INDIGO GIRLS - Poseidon And The Bitter Bug (2009)

Indigo Girls are an American folk rock duo, consisting of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers.

The new album reunites the Grammy-winning duo with veteran producer, arranger and keyboardist Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, Los Lobos and others), who worked on the Indigo Girls’ acclaimed 2006 release, Despite Our Differences. Longtime bassist Clare Kenny, drummer Matt Chamberlin and engineer David Boucher make up the rest of the core band but the sound is pure Indigo Girls, with uplifting, effortless harmonies; honest, passionately involved lyrics and infectious melodies. The album was recorded in Atlanta in a whirlwind three week session – they wanted to keep a sense of spontaneity and discovery to the process. And it’s the songwriting that shines on Poseidon, with the duo exploring new approaches to melody, harmonics and rhythm, especially on Saliers' "Digging For Your Dream," which she says is "as close to R&B as I’ve ever gotten," and Ray’s "Sugar Tongue," a fevered meditation on colonialism that finds her experimenting with her higher vocal range to capture an innocence not commonly displayed by the fiery rocker. 1, 2. or clear rapidshare link for deleting

Personnel: Omar Kent Dykes (vocals); Jimmie Vaughan (vocals, guitar); Lou Ann Barton (vocals); Gary Clark Jr., Derek O'Brien (guitar); James Cotton , Lazy Lester (harmonica); Ronnie James (bass guitar); Wes Starr (drums).

Two years ago, the rollicking tribute album On the Jimmy Reed Highway pointed the storied career of singer/guitarist Omar Kent Dykes in a new direction. That record, cut in Austin and one of the most popular blues releases of 2007, united Dykes with guitar master Jimmie Vaughan and a cadre of talented Reed devotees. Together, they celebrated the music of an acknowledged post-war blues hero. For his new Big Town Playboy, Dykes summoned many of the same Austin session players (including Vaughan, guitarist/producer Derek O'Brien and singer Lou Ann Barton) and teamed them with a pair of bona fide blues harp legends, Lazy Lester and James Cotton, on a half-dozen tracks. The all-star lineup delivers another shuffling, satisfying selection of classic American blues.

John Martyn (1948 – 2009), was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Over a forty-year career he released twenty studio albums and worked with artists such as Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, and Phil Collins. He has been described as "an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues. "Grace And Danger" was written and recorded while he was in the process of divorcing from his wife Beverley and the songs strongly reflect the emotional upheaval that he was experiencing at the time. Phil Collins played drums and provided backing vocals. The release of the album was delayed by Island Records for a year apparently because Chris Blackwell the label owner (and a friend of both John and Beverley) found the album too depressing. The album Cover - The UK photographer/artist, Sandy Porter created the image used on the John Martyn - Grace and Danger album cover (winner of the European album cover of the year) for Island Records. - wiki

ARTHUR ADAMS

As house bandleader at B.B. King's Los Angeles blues club, Arthur Adams cranks out searing blues for the well-heeled tourists who trod the length of Universal Studios' glitzy City Walk. But the great majority of his transient clientele can't begin to imagine the depth and variety of the guitarist's career. The shaven-headed Tennessee native began playing guitar in the mid-'50s, taking early inspiration from the man whose name adorns the club that later employed him (Howard Carroll, axeman for gospel's Dixie Hummingbirds, also was a principal influence). He studied music at Tennessee State University, playing briefly with the school's resident jazz and blues aggregation. Touring as a member of singer Gene Allison's band, Adams found himself stranded in Dallas, where he dazzled the locals with his fancy fretwork. Relocating to L.A. in 1964, he began to do session work for jazz great Quincy Jones, and cut singles for the Bihari Brothers' Kent label and Hugh Masekela's Motown-distributed Chisa imprint. His late-'60s R&B sides for the latter were co-produced by Stewart Levine and featured support from most of the Crusaders. Adams' 1970 debut LP for Blue Thumb, It's Private Tonight, was co-produced by Bonnie Raitt and Tommy Lipuma. Adams continued to record solo albums through the late '70s, but by the '80s he retreated from the forefront, only ocasionally moonlighting as a session guitarist for various groups. In 1992, he wrote two songs for B.B. King's There Is Always One More Time album and 1999 saw Adams's first solo release in 20 years with Back on Track, which featured King as a guest guitarist. In 2004, Adams continued rebuilding momentum with the release Soul of the Blues.

"Back On Track" (1999)
Guitarist Arthur Adams is primarily known as a session player, not to mention the bandleader at friend and collaborator B.B. King's Los Angeles blues club. On his first solo album in 20 years, Adams's guitar work is sure and deft, with the confidence that comes from years of experience. He's got a great voice, too, with an appealing smoothness that sounds fresh and contemporary, and that never lacks for expressiveness. The songwriting on Back on Track is mature, whether Adams is tackling the modern breakup (complete with lawyers and court settlements) in "Who Does She Think She Is" or exploring the complications of personal devotion in "Backup Man." He rocks out too, especially on the sensual "Honda Betty" (complete with horns) or the strong, driving "Jumpin' the Gun." If the music's not exactly mind-blowing, well, it isn't meant to be; its impact is felt in its unhurried thoughtfulness; Adams does ballads especially well. And, of course, there's the King guest spots on "Get You Next to Me" and "The Long Haul." - amazon.com *

PATTI SMITH - 1. & 2. & 3.

Patricia Lee "Patti" Smith is an American singer-songwriter, poet and artist who was a highly influential component of the punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses. Called the "Godmother of Punk", she integrated the beat poetry performance style with three-chord rock. Her allusions introduced American teens to 19th century French poetry while her "unladylike" language defied the disco era. Smith is most widely known for the song "Because the Night", which was co-written with Bruce Springsteen and reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. In 2005, Patti Smith was named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture, and in 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

On her 1975 debut, Smith was full of piss and vinegar, seriously interested in bringing together high art and low three-chord rock & roll. As a result, her free-form poetry meshes with covers of "Gloria" and "Land of a Thousand Dances," and the album centers on two long, highfalutin' pieces, including the three-part suite (warning! warning! art!) "Land." (The CD version appends a messy live take on The Who's "My Generation.") Led by Richard Sohl's piano, the arrangements don't exactly rock, and some of Smith's songwriting gets buried in its stylistic affectations (there's a great song under "Redondo Beach"'s fake reggae). But the point of Horses was Smith's persona of volume, cunning and exile, and it comes through distinctly. *
TRACKS:
01. Gloria 02. Redondo Beach 03. Birdland 04. Free Money 05. Kimberly 06. Break It Up 07. Land 08. Elegie 09. My Generation (Live)

The opening "Ask the Angels" was perhaps The Patti Smith Group's most straight-ahead rocker up to that point, while the exploratory reggae-tinged "Ain't It Strange" would be extended concert staple. The tempo is brought down a notch or two on the cool "Poppies", "Abyssinia", and "Chiklets" (the latter a bonus track on the '96 CD remaster),but soon returns to furious rock with "Pumping (My Heart)". Also included is the album's best track, the haunting and heartbroken "Distant Fingers", while the 10-minute title cut features a repetitive heavy metal riff amongst a backdrop ofsonic experimentation and a frantic recitation by Smith. *

"Easter" is an album by the Patti Smith Group, released in March 1978 on Arista Records. Produced by Jimmy Iovine, it is regarded as the group's commercial breakthrough, owing to the success of the single, "Because the Night" (co-written by Bruce Springsteen and Smith), which reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 in the UK. *

NEIL YOUNG - Live Rust (1979)

In the fall of 1978, Neil Young and Crazy Horse undertook a tour that mixed in songs off of what became RUST NEVER SLEEPS with a variety of older material. The stage set included oversize amps and a road crew cloaked not unlike Star Wars' Jawas, making this tour's distinctions as visual as they were aural. The film and recording of this tour were released as LIVE RUST. The show starts out with Neil Young solo, using acoustic guitar, harmonica and piano to perform the country-folk "Sugar Mountain," "I Am A Child," "After The Gold Rush" and "Comes A Time," the title track of the record released shortly before the tour started. Unlike his peers, Young embraced the punk scene by writing "My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)," his tribute to Sex Pistol Johnny Rotten, which wrapped up the acoustic section of the show. Other new material debuted on this tour included "Sedan Delivery," "Powderfinger" and "Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)." These tunes benefited from the might of Crazy Horse, whose punch provided particularly potent on "Cinnamon Girl," "Like A Hurricane" and the sobering "Tonight's The Night." 1, 2.

LEONARD COHEN - Live Songs (1973)

Although never released in the U.S. (except on vinyl), Live Songs is an integral part of the early Cohen chronicles. The CD contains ten live recordings, largely from a handful of European concerts between 1970 and 1972, through which time Cohen had effectively made his transition from brooding poet to brooding poet with guitar. By 1973, Cohen's cult following had swelled to a peak and already began a slight decline. The release includes several new songs, including "Passing Through," "You Know Who I Am," and "Tonight Will Be Fine," all of which skillfully combine heavy doses of erotica, love, and depression. Live Songs also includes a handful of his most popular tracks from the 1969 release, Songs From a Room. "Bird on a Wire" and "Story of Isaac" are both played admirably live, though neither adds significantly to their studio versions. The album's unmistakable climax lies in the 13-minute epic, "Please Don't Pass Me By," a tale of his personal descent into hell baring such pain and suffering that Cohen rarely sang the song again. The less moving, but still powerful "Queen Victoria" finishes off the CD and went on to become a fan favorite. Live Songs is certainly not an introductory CD, but for those who've formed a friendship with the words and wisdom of Leonard Cohen, this album finds him raw and naked in one of his finest hours. ~ All Music Guide 1, 2.

EIGHT-O-ONE - Live (2008) thumbup

In 1976, while Roxy Music had temporarily disbanded, 801 (also referred to as THE 801) got together as a temporary project and began rehearsing at Island Studios, Hammersmith, about three weeks before their first gig. The name of the band was taken from the Eno song "The True Wheel", which appears on his 1974 solo album Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). The refrain of the song -- "We are the 801, we are the central shaft" -- reportedly came to him in a dream (although it has also been noted that "Eight Nought One" acrostically spells his name - unless of course it's "Eight Zero One," which would make his name Brian Ezo). 801 performed three critically highly acclaimed concerts: in Norfolk, at the Reading Festival and the final concert on 3 September at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. This last concert was recorded live and released as the album 801 Live. The music consisted of more or less mutated selections from albums by Manzanera, Eno, and Quiet Sun, plus a full-scale rearrangement of Lennon-McCartney's "Tomorrow Never Knows" and an off-the-wall excursion into The Kinks' 1964 hit "You Really Got Me". Released at the height of the punk rock revolution in the UK, the LP was not a major commercial success, but it sold well throughout the world, particularly because it gained rave reviews from critics, both for the superb performances by the musicians and for its groundbreaking sound quality. 1, 2, 3.

DAVE FIELDS - All Wound Up (2008)

New York City genre-busting blues guitarist Dave Fields can rightfully boast that he experienced the hip modern version of the blues education. He was born in Manhattan to Sammy “Forever” Fields, the lauded virtuoso pianist, composer, arranger and producer with remarkably eclectic tastes from classic American standards and jazz to rock‘n’roll such as the Royal Teens “Short Shorts” and the Capris’ “There’s A Moon Out Tonight.” He was thrilled when his son expressed a desire to go pro and would later show his vast knowledge and awareness of contemporary rock by always replying that the “best” guitarists in the world were Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. EIRE APPARENT - Sunrise (1968)

For an album that never had a hit to drive it, by a group that isn't too well remembered on its own terms, Eire Apparent's Sunrise is amazingly well known, at least as an artifact among Jimi Hendrix fans, owing to the fact that the guitarist produced it (and played on parts of it). But one wonders how many people have ever actually listened to the album - as it turns out, it's a pleasing, tuneful, and occasionally bold psychedelic pop/rock excursion, similar in many ways to the Yardbirds' Little Games album, except that Eire Apparent were apparently far more comfortable with psychedelic pop stylings here than Keith Relf, Jimmy Page, et al., were on that Yardbirds record. The mix of lyrical acoustic and electric guitar sounds, some tasteful light orchestrations (strings and horns), and trippy lyrical conceits all works extremely well; this is a surprising psychedelic pop release, gently trippy most of the way through with a few searing contributions by Hendrix. Almost as important are the hints one gets of Ernie Graham's subsequent songwriting range in embryonic form on numbers such as "Rock & Roll Band" and "Magic Carpet" - his work is rootsier and mostly more accessible than that of Mick Cox, the other major songwriter in the group (though he does make a pleasing contribution with "Let Me Stay"). Between their best songs, the group's overall musical facility, and Hendrix's contributions, the whole album ends up extremely strong and consistent, and well worth hearing on its own terms, even if it wasn't breaking any new ground musically. ~ All Music Guide 1.

WILLIE NELSON - Naked Willie (2009)

After establishing himself as a major Nashville songwriter (he wrote "Crazy" for Patsy Cline, among others), Willie Nelson signed his first serious artist contract at RCA in 1964. At that time, the producers and A&R men like Chet Atkins were boss. Singers weren't allowed to select arrangements, musicians, studios - any of the key factors in making the records the artist has in mind. Willie was constantly frustrated by the syrupy strings, vocal group choruses and generally "slick" final product. Fast forward to 2008. Willie and long-time harmonica player Mickey Raphael are casually wondering what those records would or could sound like if only the multi-track tapes could be tracked down and the songs re-mixed with the original intent in mind. Gone are the strings and gangs of back-up singers. Gone, in fact is most of the production that always "ruined" the songs. NAKED WILLIE is a new collection of 17 vintage RCA sides - spanning 1966-1970 - FINALLY the Willie way. - amazon.com 1.

THE FLOCK - 1. & 2.

The Flock was a Chicago-based jazz-rock band that released two records on Columbia records in 1969 (The Flock) and 1970 (Dinosaur Swamps). The Flock did not achieve the commercial success of other Columbia jazz-rock groups of the era such as Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but were most notable for their inclusion of a prominent violin in their recordings. The violinist, Jerry Goodman, went on to become a member of Mahavishnu Orchestra and a solo artist. The members at the time of their 1969 studio recording were Fred Glickstein (guitar, lead vocals), Jerry Goodman (violin), Jerry Smith (bass), Ron Karpman (drums), Rick Canoff (saxophone), Tom Webb (saxophone) and Frank Posa (trumpet).

MARK FARNER - Mark Farner (1977)

Mark Farner's unmistakable voice and guitar sound are the identifying marks Grand Funk Railroad imprinted on the rock consciousness of the world. His self-titled solo album from 1977 replaces Farner's pop sensibilities with modern blues. Where bands like Foghat and the Groundhogs had a more earthy sound, producer Dick Wagner gives this effort a nice glossy mix of traditional rock and contemporary '70s polish. "Lorraine" dances with Phil Aaberg's Yamaha piano and producer Wagner's acoustic guitar. Wagner performed with Farner in a 1966 band, the Bossmen, before Wagner created the Frost and went on to fame with Lou Reed and Alice Cooper. This recording was released in the middle of Alice Cooper's 1975-1978 hit streak with Wagner, adult contemporary pop which the singer of the Top Five "Bad Time" and number one "Loco-Motion" should have been able to capitalize on. Even harder-edged tunes like "Lucky Lady" could have brightened up FM radio at the time. The guitars on "Ban the Man" do not resonate with the Grand Funk sound; it is Farner all grown up. The album is adult Contemporary modern blues, the guitars rocking hard, but not quite metal. "You and Me Baby" is perhaps the poppiest song on the album, with a catchy riff and uplifting vocal. It is the only song that clocks in under three minutes at 2:51, the other nine tracks all in the three-plus-minute range. Where the 1978 album by ex-Grand Funk members Don Brewer, Mel Schacher, and Craig Frost, Flint on Columbia, suffered from overproduction, Wagner puts Farner in a perfect sound setting for his artistry and the time. Maybe radio would have responded better to a cover song on the record, Farner's version of Doris Troy's "Just One Look" is what was needed here, and its absence is obvious. But tracks like "Dear Miss Lucy" and the very hard-edged latter-day Beach Boys take on "Street Fight" make for a respectable musical statement by a rock legend. Had Grand Funk Railroad released "Easy Breezes," they could have perhaps found new life in a third incarnation. It's inventive and is the high point of a serious solo outing by a man confident in his songwriting abilities. ~ All Music Guide 1.

DEPECHE MODE 1. & 2.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

"Speak & Spell" is the debut album from the British synthpop group Depeche Mode, recorded and released in 1981. The album peaked at no.10 in the UK Album Charts. This was the only Depeche Mode album with Vince Clarke as a member of the band. Clarke wrote most of the songs for the band, before departed to form the synthpop duo Yazoo with Alison Moyet. The album is significantly lighter in tone and melody than their later work, a direction which can largely be attributed to Clarke's writing. After he left, Martin Gore would take over songwriting duties, writing almost all of the band's material. Later albums written by him would explore darker subjects and melodies. The album title alludes to the then-popular "Speak & Spell" electronic toy. 1, 2.

"A Broken Frame" is the second studio album by the British synthpop band Depeche Mode, released in 1982. The album was written entirely by Martin Gore and recorded after the departure of Vince Clarke, who had left the band to form Yazoo with singer Alison Moyet. Alan Wilder was part of a second tour in the United Kingdom occurring prior to the release of this album, but he had not officially joined the band, and thus, does not appear on the album. 1.

IAN GILLAN - One Eye To Morocco (2009)

Eagle Rock Entertainment will release "One Eye To Morocco" — the first studio album with all-new material in 10 years from legendary Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan. Produced and recorded in Canada with maestro Nick Blagona, the music was written by Ian Gillan together with longtime collaborator Steve Morris, as well as Michael Lee Jackson and Rodney Appleby — who both performed on the "Gillan's Inn" U.S. tour, as featured on the double album/DVD "Live in Anaheim".

The voice is instantly recognizable; Ian Gillan's unique style draws you in. "One Eye To Morocco" goes deeper into the roots of rock and roll, soul and blues, than any other Ian Gillan solo album. The CD is the most adventurous and complete album Ian Gillan has recorded in his long career. His distinguished style admired by generations of Deep Purple fans is showcased, as well as his musical versatility. The title track is a seductive orchestration supporting Gillan's entrancing style, followed by the pure rock and roll of "No Lotion For That", while "Better Days" and "Always The Traveler" are inspired soul ballads.

"From a café in the Jewish Quarter of Cracow, where the conceptual seeds were sown, to harvest time at a Toronto studio, this is a magical journey for me," says Gillan. "Sitting alone in my room, waiting for no one to call me, lost in a dream of my own…"

JOE COCKER - Mad Dogs & Englishmen (1970)

One of the first classic post-Woodstock albums, "Mad Dogs And Englishmen" was recorded at precisely the moment that Cocker and his bandleader Leon Russell found themselves, however briefly, at the epicenter of the rock & roll universe. The big hits here, the juiced-up version of Traffic's "Feelin' Alright," the Memphis soul revamp of the Box Tops "The Letter", have been ubiquitous for years, and remain as potent as ever. Some of the less familiar tracks are equally rewarding though, particularly the Cocker/Russell duet on Dylan's "Girl From the North Country" (with the composer in attendance), and the obscure early Ray Charles raver "Sticks and Stones." This one shot ensemble (including veteran British musicians and the cream of then current L.A. sessioneers) was a great band, however unwieldy (twenty-one members!) and we're lucky to have this document of its only tour.

JUDIE TZUKE - Portfolio - A Message From Radio City (1988)

Judie Tzuke is an English singer/songwriter. Educated in the visual arts, performing arts, and music, Tzuke performed in folk clubs from the age of 15. Tzuke's career proper began in 1977, when she signed to Elton John's label Rocket Records. Her first single on Rocket, "For You" (1978), was released under the name of Tzuke and Paxo. However, her first major success - the classic single "Stay with Me till Dawn", released in 1979 - was released simply under "Judie Tzuke". Judie's first album, Welcome to the Cruise, which featured "Stay with Me till Dawn" and some of the Tzuke and Paxo singles, achieved great critical and commercial success. In 2002, "Stay With Me till Dawn" was chosen by the British public as one of the fifty best British songs 1952-2002 (ranking number 39).

GUN

The Gun were a little-known 60s British acid rock band who evolved into the 70s progressive hard rock trio Baker Gurvitz Army. The Gun began as The Knack, formed in 1963 by guitarist/vocalist Paul Gurvitz (born Paul Anthony Curtis, 6 July 1947, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire; he was known by the surname Curtis until the early 1970s. Thereafter he adopted his family's actual surname, Gurvitz. The Knack changed its name with the development of a psychedelic style in the spring/summer of 1967, performing] at the final UFO Club concerts with bands such as Pink Floyd. In November, 1967 they made recordings for the BBC's newest flagship alternative music radio programme, Top Gear and twice played in the air. Soon to expand into a sextet, with Paul's younger brother Adrian, then they were consisting as a power trio of Paul Curtis as bassist, Adrian Curtis (Adrian Gurvitz) as guitarist/vocalist (he also wrote all music and lyrics of The Gun), and drummer Louie Farrell (born Brian John Farrell, 8 December 1947, Goodmayes, Essex; he joined The Knack in mid 1966) to release two albums after being signed to CBS Records in early 1968.

GUN - The Gun (1968)

The band scored a minor hit with the opening track from their self-titled album (1968), "Race With The Devil" issued as a single in October 1968. A fan of this hard rocking song, Jimi Hendrix performed it at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, although no recordings appear to exist. Unfortunately they were unable to score any other hits, despite other singles such as "Drives You Mad". Their debut album is also noteworthy for the cover art, the first album art done by artist Roger Dean. Their second album, Gunsight (1969), was a flop producing no hits but included tracks such as, "Long Haired Wildman" and "Drown Yourself In The River". However the lack of schlagers led to the band's end leaving the Curtis (now as Gurvitz) brothers free to go to work in Three Man Army in 1971 and later, in 1974-1976 with Ginger Baker, the former drummer for Cream, as The Baker Gurvitz Army. "Race With The Devil" has been covered by Judas Priest (on the remastered CD version of Sin After Sin), Black Oak Arkansas (on the album Race With The Devil) and Girlschool (on the album Demolition). 1.

ZZ TOP - Chrome, Smoke & BBQ (2003)

"Chrome, Smoke & BBQ" is a box set by American blues-rock band ZZ Top, released in 2003.

In the Seventies, they figured out the grand gestures of arena rock. In the Eighties, they had all the right ideas about video when MTV flowered. So what if they mostly sang about sex, cars, beer, food and Texas? ZZ Top were true to their blues roots, and they made you feel good enough to party. The four-CD set "Chrome, Smoke and BBQ" naturally includes "Gimme All Your Lovin'," "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Legs" three perfect moments when riff, tone, visual image and the band's well-honed boogie combined in such a manner that they will never be improved upon. At least a dozen more great moments are preserved here on four discs containing no cuts less than pretty good.

MICHAEL BLOOMFIELD - If You Love These Blues, Play 'em As You Please (1976) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Michael Bloomfield (1943-1981), an American musician, guitarist, and composer, born in Chicago, Illinois, became one of the first popular music superstars of the 1960's to earn his reputation entirely on his instrumental prowess. Respected for his fluid guitar playing, Bloomfield, who knew and played with many of Chicago's blues legends even before he achieved his own fame, was one of the primary influences on the mid-to-late 1960's revival of classic Chicago and other styles of blues music. In 2003 he was also also ranked at number 22 on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

Originally recorded for Guitar Player magazine and released as "Guitar Player 3002" in 1976, this album is regarded as one of the highlights of Bloomfield's later career. Michael Bloomfield takes you through the blues guitar style of B.B. King, Jimmy Rogers, T-Bone Walker, Jim Jackson, Howling Wolf, Guitar Slim, Eddie Lang and others. 1, 2.

Kaleidoscope (originally The Kaleidoscope) was an American psychedelic folk and ethnic band who recorded 4 albums and several singles for Epic Records between 1966 and 1970. The group was founded on democratic principles – there was no "leader". They soon began performing live in clubs, winning a recording contract with Epic Records. The band recorded their third album, "Incredible! Kaleidoscope", in 1968. It featured "Seven-Ate Sweet", a long progressive instrumental piece in 7/8 time signature which they had been playing live since the early days of the group. The album reached #139 on Billboard in 1969, the only Kaleidoscope album to chart. Around this time they also did soundtrack work on educational and other films, and also made a triumphant appearance at the Newport Folk Festival. - wiki

Carole King wasn't selling a lot of records when she released Welcome Home. Much of the collection is not unpleasant typical Carole King introspective piano ballads. Three songs make the CD worth owning. Main Street Saturday Night has a great FM 70s groove with some nice guitar and atmosphere. Morning Sun builds enough emotionally to the chorus that it rises above standard fare. And Venusian Diamond stands out as one of King's most interesting recordings. It is Beatlesque from the word go and its moody atmosphere is top notch (like the Beatlesque Speeding Time a few years later). Main Street Saturday Night and Venusian Diamond both let King's band take center stage. It is a little surprising - and kind of cool - to associate these rock grooves to King. Here you have two rock gems and one pop gem to add to King's catalog. Very rare and unknown Carole King LP. Shortly after the recording of this LP, King's husband and musical partner died, sort of taking the wind out of the sails (and sales) of the LP's release. *

Recorded roughly 20 years after the hit concert album FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE!, this 1995 sequel finds British singer/guitarist Peter Frampton offering up another energetic live set. Rather than revisiting the songs from the aforementioned '70s record-collection staple, however, Frampton primarily draws from his latter-day catalogue, including '94s self-titled outing, for tunes such as "Day in the Sun," a mid-tempo number with a potent guitar solo, and "Off the Hook," a propulsive hard-rock track.

Personnel: Peter Frampton (vocals, guitar); Bob Mayo (vocals, guitar, keyboards); John Regan (vocals, bass guitar); John 'JR' Robinson (drums).

Recording information: The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA (06/15/1995); The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA (06/16/1995).

HOLLYWOOD FATS BAND - Complete 1979 Studio Sessions (2002)

This album highlights the incredible talent of this long gone little known artist (died 1986 aged 32). Michael Mann, nicknamed Hollywood Fats by Buddy Guy, produces so many memorable moments with his unique phrasing and guitar lines. The music style is West Coast Jump blues (some give the band credit for inventing it), swing and country blues. Not all of the music is to my taste, but Hollywood Fats is so ear catching, you have to admire even those tracks which don't appeal in style. Hollywood was mentored by Magic Sam, Buddy Guy and Freddie King. Played with Muddy Walters, J.B. Hutto, Albert King, John Lee Hooker. Played with the Albert King band until Mr. King became too jealous - some credentials! The vocals are by Al Blake which are not so great but he does excel on harmonica on several tracks. The legendary Larry Taylor is also on base.

A U M

This minor San Francisco blues-rock trio formed in 1968 and lasted two years. The group consisted of Wayne Ceballos (guitar, piano, lead vocals), Kenneth Newell (bass, vocals) and Larry Martin (drums, vocals). By early 1969 Aum began appearing as an opening act at Bill Graham's Fillmore West. That summer found the band touring the east coast, where it played the Atlantic City Pop Festival and opened for Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Fillmore East. Immersed in the San Francisco tradition, the band tended to inject diverse influences, such as gospel, into its sound and improvised on stage. Aum released only two albums - "Bluesvibes" and "Resurrection", after which they disbanded.

- Bluesvibes (1969) @320 *

Originally released in 1969; led by multi-instrumentalist Wayne Ceballas, Aum excelled at jam-based blues rock and this Richard Gottehrer - produced debut showcases Ceballos' singing and guitar work, injecting considerable energy into his performances!
TRACKS:
01. Tobacco Road 02. Mississippi Mud 03. Bay Bridge Blues 04. Chilli Woman 05. A Little Help From You 06. Movin Man 07. You Can't Hide

- Resurrection (1969) @256 *

San Francisco act who were a very popular around the city's ballrooms in the late 60's. This their second album is from 1969 and it's a really diverse affair with a mixture of hard rock and psychedelic numbers. The title track is a dreamy epic affair with some great guitar work while a gospel tinge creeps in on "God is Back in Town". This is worthy of investigation. Originally on Bill Graham's Fillmore label.

SUZI QUATRO - Best Of The 70´s (2000)

Suzi Quatro (born Susan Kay Quatrocchio) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, radio personality and actress. Quatro's first single "Rolling Stone" did not achieve popularity anywhere except Portugal, where it made number one. Most introduced Quatro to the songwriting and production team Nicky Chinn/Mike Chapman. Her second single "Can the Can" (1973) was a number one hit throughout Europe and in Australia. It was followed up by three further hits: "48 Crash" (1973), "Daytona Demon" (1973) and "Devil Gate Drive" (1974) on RAK Records. Her first two albums were also European and Australian successes. These recordings, however, met little success in her native U.S., despite tours in the mid-1970s supporting Alice Cooper, and, except in Australia, the popularity of Quatro's rocking glam rock declined from 1975.

Suzi Quatro has sold over 45 million records. 1, 2.

ALBERT KING - The Best Of Albert King (1986)

"The best of Albert King" more like the best material that he happened to record for Stax between 1968 and 1973. Even that's debatable, the 13 tracks including covers such as "Honky Tonk Woman," "Sky Is Crying," and "Hound Dog." It does present a reasonable cross-section of his soul-inflected work of the period, drawing from over a half-dozen LPs and a couple of singles, though you might be as well or better off with his more focused individual titles. And for the true "best of Albert King," Rhino's Ultimate Collection remains the hands-down winner.

Ace Records re-released it in 1994 with six bonus selections of the same period. If you are a blues fan, or even just a fan of music that speaks to the listner you cannot help but be "hooked!" This is one man and his guitar for ten of the eightteen tracks, accompanied only by beer bottle tops stuck to the end of his shoe tapping the floorboards - just fantastic! Even when he is accompanied by other musicians this is still Hooker's show and the force and conviction in his delivery is startling, hypnotic and at points, scary! - amazon.com

The 2nd concert was the group's last-ever performance which took place at the Winterland Arena on 22nd September 1972; the songs featured were drawn mainly from the group's last two studio albums, 'Bark' & 'Long John Silver', with a sprinkling of old favourites, the rarely-performed 'The Son Of Jesus' and more..

The Masters Apprentices were a leading Australian rock band of the 1960s and early 1970s, fronted by singer Jim Keays. They are best known for their singles "Undecided", "Because I Love You", and "Turn Up Your Radio". They also launched the career of entrepreneur, businessman and rock manager Glenn Wheatley.

Probably the Masters Apprentices best work. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, Choice Cuts epitomised the progressive rock genre. Contains such gems as 'Rio De Camero', 'Because I Love You' and 'Easy To Lie'. This album bridged the gap of the '60's band and brought the Masters into the new era of the '70's. No other Australian band from the '60's made the transition and Choice Cuts is testament to the Masters' endurance and credibility.

STEVIE WONDER - At The Close Of A Century (1999)

The 4-CD set AT THE CLOSE OF A CENTURY is a chronological history of Stevie Wonder's commercial successes. The first CD documents his early Motown years on tracks that emphasize his frenetic singing and superb harmonica playing. The songs taken from MUSIC OF MY MIND, his first fully written and produced effort, show significant vocal development. CDs two and three include material from INNERVISIONS, SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, and TALKING BOOK, a creative period that is considered Wonder's strongest. It is on these cuts that Wonder uses his most varied production techniques and instrumentation to share his vivid creative spirit.

The fourth disc continues with pop hits recorded during the '80s and '90s, beginning with three songs he recorded for MUSIQUARIUM, and concluding with his duet with Babyface, "How Come, How Long." Disc four should surprise listeners who may remember only "I Just Called to Say I Love You" from Wonder's '80s work. Tracks like "Overjoyed" and "Ribbon in the Sky" make clear that Wonder had far more than one great song during the period. This box set is a great introduction to Stevie Wonder, and even after listening to all four discs in succession, fans will be left wanting more. *

Featuring 12 original songs and three inspired covers - Buck Owens ("Crying Time"), Delbert McClinton ("Here Come The Blues Again") and Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson ("I Can Get Off On You") -- Gulf Coast Highway finds Lindell reaching new performing and songwriting heights. His soul-drenched mix of roots-rock, sinewy blues, swampy R&B and a hint of honky-tonk soul permeates each and every song, and have led critics to make comparisons to Van Morrison and Delbert McClinton. With musical help from some of the Crescent City's finest players, including the Galactic rhythm section of Robert Mercurio and Stanton Moore on eight tracks, Lindell has created his most fully realized lyrical and musical statement yet. - amazon.com

Playing through Lucky Girl is like listening to a history of blues, rhythm & blues and soul all wrapped into one knockout musical package. King's Tell Me Baby to the “gotta smile” handling of John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom into the soulful rendering of the Dennis Walker/ Alan Mirikitani collaboration, Too Little, Too Late. Along with these luminaries, Ms. Lovely also pays tribute to other icons of the genre including Big Mama Thornton, Willie Dixon and Betty James. *

"I honestly think Karen Lovely is the most talented singer I have been associated with since my early days with Robert Cray." - Dennis Walker, multi Grammy and Handy award winning producer (Robert Cray, B.B. King, Bettye LaVette)

Longtime fans of Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat have come to expect the finest in flamethrower-style Texas rockin blues and to plug Tijuana Bible into your CD player is sort of like having Billy Gibbons, Freddie King, Johnny Winter and T-Bone Walker show up to paint your house. The house wont get painted in fact, itll probably be destroyed in the subsequent party but youre gonna have a damned good time while it happens. Tijuana Bible contains 13 new Suhler originals witty, literate, groove-basted barroom classics along with finely interpreted material by such Jim Suhler heroes as Rory Gallagher, Elvin Bishop and AC/DC. Not only does Bishop guest star on the album, so do guitar master Joe Bonamassa and vocalist Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie fame. Suhler has a fireworks approach to lead, rhythm and slide guitar. Its the sort of attitude and approach that has always sparked his fine live and studio work with Monkey Beat as well as with George Thorogood and the Destroyers, for whom hes played lead guitar since 1999.

THE ALPHA BAND - The Arista Albums (2005)

The Alpha Band was a rock band formed in July 1976 from the remnants of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue. Band members were T-Bone Burnett (who allegedly converted Dylan to Christianity during the Revue), Steven Soles, and David Mansfield, plus sidemen who differed from record to record and included: David Kemper (later drummer for Bob Dylan and Jerry Garcia Band); gospel great Andrae Crouch; and former Beatle Ringo Starr. The Alpha Band reputedly signed a huge-money deal with Arista Records, Clive Davis's label. But their three albums were remarkably obscure, even upon release: almost straight to the cut out bin. Somehow, the Alphas never gained traction. The group is now recalled mostly as a launching pad for Mansfield, and even more for launching Burnett. Soles's solo career never went anywhere outside of Christian record stores. When the band broke up in 1979, all three members began producing albums for other artists.

The group's 1976 self-titled debut, which featured an extended lineup of drummer Matt Betton and bassist David Jackson, contained an eclectic collection of material highlighted by Burnett's impressionistic lyrics, Soles' folk-pop tunes and Mansfield's guitar, mandolin and brilliant violin. The trio of Burnett, Soles and Mansfield continued on for two more records, Spark in the Dark (1977) and the overtly Christian The Statue Makers of Hollywood (1978), before disbanding in 1979. 1, 2, 3.

JOHNNY ADAMS - One Foot In The Blues (1996)

01. Won't Pass Me By
02. One Foot in the Blues
03. Baby Don't You Cry
04. Ill Wind
05. Roadblock
06. Angel Eyes
07. Half Awoke
08. I Wonder Where Our Love Has Gone
09. Two Years of Torture
10. Cookin' In Style
11. I Know What I've Got

Johnny Adams is renowned for his smoky but smooth voice, but One Foot in the Blues is as much a showcase for Lonnie Smith's Hammond B-3 organ, which sounds like a living, breathing creature. The spare, mostly live-in-the-studio production allows plenty of wide open sonic space for Smith's expressive organ (including his pulsating bass pedal), Ed Peterson's after-hours tenor sax, and Jimmy Ponder's gentle guitar fills. While Adams' most fervent champions thrill to his every note, others may find his singing mannered on the ballads that dominate this session, and his voice is certainly huskier than in the days when he earned the sobriquet "the Tan Canary." As the title sests, the CD is only partly blues; Adams' other "foot" here, as on his previous '90s recordings, is placed squarely between the cabaret-jazz crooning of Johnny Hartman and the soul-pop styling of Lou Rawls. ~ All Music Guide
