Bonnie Raitt fans have long been familiar with Jon Cleary's funky keyboard work and have often been privileged to see the man open her shows with his band, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen--one of the greasiest aggregations on the planet. Cleary's previous outing attempted to capture this live magic in the studio, but managed to merely hint at it. For this recording the British ex-pat wisely adds a little modern studio gloss to tunes like "Agent 00 Funk" and "Oh No No No." This way, instead of inevitably paling beside the group's intense live shows, Pin Your Spin offers something new: an equally down and dirty recorded experience that borrows from today's hip-hop studio techniques without sacrificing any of the group interaction that makes this band so special. Having lived in New Orleans for two decades, Cleary is steeped in that city's second-line tradition, but he is equally influenced by the moody groves of '70s Miami soul. "Caught Red Handed" brings these roots to the fore. Elsewhere Cleary demonstrates the well-rounded musical chops, soulful singing, and terrific songwriting that caused Raitt to deem him "The Ninth Wonder of the World." - amazon.com *

Proving that the blues not only sees no color but also no country, Chris Duarte unites with Bluestone Company, the biggest blues band in Japan, for a collaboration called 396. Of course, duet albums have a long, storied tradition within the blues Junior Wells played with Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter revived Muddy Waters' career, British bands like the Yardbirds supported their hero Sonny Boy Williamson so this doesn't feel opportunistic, although it's clearly a way for Duarte to consolidate his Japanese following and get Bluestone Company some exposure stateside. In that regard, 396 isn't a particularly free-flowing jam session, but the album sests that Bluestone Company aren't really about loose-limbed jams anyway. They're a tight, efficient outfit, working precision rhythms that never lose sight of the pocket, and they show a peculiar fondness for funkifying their groove, which makes them feel less like a blues band than a blues-inflected bar band. This doesn't give Duarte a whole lot of room to roam this is hardly a showcase for his guitar the way 2008's Vantage Point or 2007's Blue Velocity were and his vocals are too close-miked for comfort but it does speak well for him as a collaborator and for Bluestone Company as a supporting band that they could find a comfortable common ground, one that's partway between their two strengths. Granted, this common ground can sound like a weird, stiff jam from Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan's co-headlining tour from 1990 only with less complicated polyrhythms but hardcore fans of either artist will find something to enjoy in this cross-pollination. ~ All Music Guide 1, 2.

This new recording was done in Italy with a local blues rhythm section, and features guest performers Johnny Sansone, Rj. Mischo and Brian Templeton-exemplary harp players all. Sonny plays electric and steel guitar, wrote most of the 11 songs and has the voice and delivery you would expect from a Texan with deep roots in the blues.

SLEEPY JOHN ESTES - On 80 Highway (2008)

Recorded just three years before his death in 1977, "On 80 Highway" is a collection of 17 studio tracks by blues vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Sleepy John Estes. Accompanied by longtime cohort Hammie Nixon on vocals, harmonica, and that most underrated of instruments, the kazoo, Estes offers rough and evocative interpretations of traditional songs, as well as a couple of his own songs.

First the obvious: this CD most likely will not appeal to a wide audience; it’s not going to set the charts aflame and it’s probably not going to posthumously catapult Estes into the spotlight. You won’t hear these songs during a particularly heart-wrenching and overwrought emotional moment on one of the many current indistinguishable television dramas, nor will any of these songs make the cut on the next Guitar Hero video game. But for fans of blues music or those simply interested in the rich history of how traditional songs are reinvented and reworked, "On 80 Highway" is a welcome release. 1, 2.

SIMON & GARFUNKEL

Simon & Garfunkel were an American singer-songwriter duo consisting of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. They formed the group Tom and Jerry in 1957, and had their first taste of success with the minor hit "Hey, Schoolgirl". As Simon and Garfunkel, the duo rose to fame in 1965, backed by the hit single "The Sounds of Silence". Their music was featured in the landmark film The Graduate, propelling them further into the public consciousness. They are well known for their close vocal harmonies and sometimes unstable relationship. Their last studio album, "Bridge over Troubled Water", was delayed several times due to artistic disagreements. They were among the most popular recording artists of the 1960s; among their biggest hits, in addition to "The Sounds of Silence", were "I Am a Rock", "Homeward Bound", "Mrs. Robinson", "Bridge over Troubled Water", and "The Boxer". They have received several Grammys and are inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (2007). In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Simon and Garfunkel #40 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. They have reunited on several occasions since their 1970 breakup, most famously for 1981's The Concert in Central Park, which attracted about 500,000 people

Kal David is an American blues musician famous for his work as a guitarist, singer and songwriter with some of the world's preeminent blues musicians as well as for his work in the early 1970s on Columbia Records. Born and raised in Chicago, Kal's recording career began as a teenager when, as a member of Kal David and the Excep-tions, he was signed to a contract with King Records and later to Vee-Jay Records. Another member of the group was Peter Cetera, who later became the vocalist for a band known as Chicago. n the 80's Kal made his true commitment to the blues idiom as a guitarist and as a singer/songwriter. In the studio or on tour, his commitment was evident in his work as a featured guitarist for Etta James, Johnny Rivers and with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, where he inherited the lead guitar chair from Mick Taylor. As a solo artist Kal recorded two albums for SoulCoast Records, Never a Dull Moment and Double Tuff. With chart topping, impressive record sales internationally and numerous television appearances, including a one-hour Kal David special in Germany, Kal's reputation grew worldwide.

SUSAN TEDESCHI - Wait For Me (2002)

"Wait For Me" is Susan Tedes-chi's follow-up to her Grammy-nominated solo debut, Just Won't Burn. The singer-songwriter's voice is cool and strong; her soulfulness has much to do with self-containment knowing when and how much to hold back. The same can be said of Tedeschi's guitar playing, which is best displayed on "I Fell in Love," where she playfully spars with pianist Johnnie Johnson, Chuck Berry's legendary accompanist. Tedeschi's vocals, her catholic approach to roots music and her knack for pop-soul balladry ("Wrapped in the Arms of Another") beg comparisons to Bonnie Raitt, which isn't a bad thing: Like Raitt, Tedeschi follows her bliss all over the stylistic map, from Memphis-style soul ("Alone") to slow, torchy blues ("Wait for Me") and a mystical meditation ("In the Garden") that points the way for Tedeschi to develop a more personal style. Wait for Me has no real center, but its various parts showcase Tedeschi's formidable talent. - rollingstone.com *

RICK WAKEMAN - Voyage: The Very Best Of (1996)

DISC 1:

"Voyage" is one of the best compilations available from keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman. Not only does this two-CD set include his most acclaimed pieces, but it also gathers material that is less renowned yet equally displays his instrumental prowess. Disc one starts off with four tracks from the famed Six Wives of Henry VIII, highlighted by the progressive weight of "Catherine Howard," followed by the synthesized mysticism of "Arthur" and the electronic whimsy of "Merlin the Magician" from The Legend of King Arthur. A well-deserved 40 minutes of the second disc is drawn from Journey to the Center of the Earth, with wonderful passages from "Recollection" and "The Battle" that emphasize Wakeman's keen approach of instrumentally narrating his music. The true value of Voyage lies in the lesser-known tracks that may only be familiar to die-hard fans, but are a must to uncover. Pieces like "Judas Iscariot," "After the Ball," and "Ice Run" are fabulous inclusions to this compilation, since they represent Wakeman's ability to play gorgeous, softly toned pieces as well as massive synthesized blitzes. Additions like "Searching for Gold" and "White Rock" from the album of the same name symbolize Wakeman's gift of producing both a setting and an atmosphere through his use of the keyboard, something that was evident in his days with The Strawbs. Detailed liner notes complete this best-of set, which would make a sound entry point for anyone interested in Rick Wakeman's musical craftsmanship. ~ All Music Guide 1, 2, 3, 4.

"Back to the Light" is the first solo effort of Queen's guitarist Brian May. It was recorded between 1988 and 1992 at the Allerton Hill Studios, mixed at the Metropolis Studios and then released on September 28, 1992 in the UK. The album would be released in the United States and Canada on February 2, 1993 with a different cover. It reached gold status in the UK.

As the guitarist for Queen, Brian May helped define that group's grand, almost operatic gestures. The trademark touches he brought to Queen's music the massed sections of baroque multi-tracked strings, the burnished electric timbre and his keen lyric focus are well-represented by "Back to the Light". Of particular note is the title tune, which should remind old fans of classic Queen, even in the vocals. Likewise, on the lush Freddie Mercury-styled classical ballad "Too Much Love Will Kill You" and the protoboogie of "Resurrection," where May employs Cozy Powell's big rolling drum beat, walls of vocal chorales, distorted strings, and a high-flying lead line to supercharge his tale of renewal. Elsewhere, May enunciates a classic vision of the hard rock radio anthem. The crushing riffs and vocal one-upmanship of "Love Token" are reminiscent of Meat Loaf's big battle of the sexes gestures, while on "I'm Scared" May's mock-humorous insecurity finds release in a hard rocking power pop arrangement. For the slow dancers among us, the lazy backbeat and mournful nostalgia of "Nothing But Blue" and the fluid leads of the instrumental "Last Horizon" lend a contrasting touch of grace.

"Roll On" is JJ Cale's first batch of new solo material since 2004's "To Tulsa and Back" and comes on the heels of his gold selling 2006 collaboration with Eric Clapton, "The Road to Escondido", which also earned him his first Grammy. Cale wrote and produced all twelve songs on "Roll On", and plays all the instruments on most of the tunes as well, including guitars, pedal steel, bass, drums, piano and synthesizers. He tracked most of the album at his home studio in California. Among the few exceptions is the title track to "Roll On", a previously unreleased collaboration with Eric Clapton, and the latest evidence of the pair's incredibly fruitful, simpatico creative partnership. Elsewhere, Cale adds a few curveballs - like the scat-sung opener "Who Knew" and the jazz chords of "Former Me" - to his mesmerizing mix of blues, country, rock and other quintessentially American styles. The album is such a treat to the ears it's easy to overlook the amount of work that goes into creating Cale's signature 'laid back' sound. He played most of the instruments on his landmark first album 'Naturally' out of financial necessity. He does so on "Roll On" out of a passionate, meticulous love of the craft.

JOE BONAMASSA - The Ballad Of John Henry (2009)

It's hard to believe the impact that guitarist Joe Bonamassa has had on the blues and blues-rock scenes since the October 2000 release of his exhilarating debut album, A New Day Yesterday. In less than nine years, Bonamassa has released six studio and two live albums, his mix of 1970s-influenced hard rock, British blues-rock, and pure electric blues redefining the genre for other up-and-coming artists while his breathtaking technical skills have earned Bonamassa bona fide "guitar god" status.

The Ballad of John Henry is Bonamassa's seventh studio album, and the follow-up to his critically-acclaimed 2007 release, Sloe Gin. Much like his previous work, The Ballad of John Henry is a high-octane showcase for Bonamassa's blues-rock fervor and stunning six-string wizardry. *

The Soul of John Black isn't exactly a household name, but if you're a Soul or Blues music fan, they're a band you just might want to get to know. The group's latest album, "Black John", which was released in the U.S. on Feb. 17, 2009, is a nice slice of bluesy Soul that's all-new but at the same time has a very retro feel to it. If you're a fan of Al Green, bottleneck slide guitar, danceable Blues songs and/or classic Soul, this is an album you'll want to check out.

Two things are obvious about The Soul of John Black: the first is that the band isn't really focused on commercial success. If they did, they wouldn't have such a confusing name. What makes things even more confusing is that the 'group' is essentially just one man: singer-songwriter-musician John "JB" Bigham. The other thing that's obvious about TSOJB is that Bigham is the real deal. He isn't someone who's merely faking the funk with his music: his brand of bluesy Soul has the kind of genuine, gritty authenticity that can only be obtained through years of life and work experience.

Y E S (the first six albums)

Yes are an English progressive rock band that formed in London in 1968. Their music is marked by sharp dynamic contrasts, extended song lengths, abstract lyrics, and a general showcasing of instrumental prowess. Yes blends symphonic and other 'classical' structures with their own brand of musical style. Despite a great many lineup changes, occasional splits within the group and the ever-changing trends in popular music, the band has continued on for over forty years and still retains a large following. Band members Chris Squire, Steve Howe and Alan White have announced the In The Present tour for late 2008 with vocalist Benoît David and keyboardist Oliver Wakeman.

Their eponymous debut album was released on July 25, 1969. The harmony vocals of Anderson and Squire were an immediate trademark of the Yes sound. The band's optimistic, vaguely futuristic outlook on the world was delivered with a combination of melody and virtuosity. Standout tracks were a jazzy take on The Byrds' "I See You" and the album closer, "Survival", which displayed the band's vocal harmonies and deft song-construction. Notably, the album was given a favourable review by Lester Bangs in Rolling Stone magazine, which described the band as promising, the album displaying a "sense of style, taste and subtlety". In 1970 the band released their second album, this time accompanied by a 30-piece orchestra. Time and a Word featured mostly original compositions and two cover songs, Richie Havens's "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed", and "Everydays" by Stephen Stills, originally recorded by Buffalo Springfield. The reworking of Havens' song also included excerpts from the theme song of the movie The Big Country. Although musically exceptional in terms of melody delivery, the orchestra (and keyboardist Tony Kaye) overpowered Banks and much of the vocal work, leaving Time and a Word somewhat uneven. Before the album's release, guitarist Peter Banks was fired and ex-Tomorrow guitarist Steve Howe was hired. Howe was included in the front cover photo of the American release despite not having played on the album..... - wikipedia

CHAMPION JACK DUPREE - Walkin' The Blues - The Very Best Of Champion Jack Dupree (2003)

Former prizefighter 'Champion' Jack Dupree's rowdy sense of humor and impassioned piano playing proved a winning combination during his successful music career. Although he lived in the musically influential cities of Detroit and Chicago, pianist Jack Dupree's music never lost the sound of his hometown, New Orleans. Dupree was one of the first Bluesmen to leave his native country for a more accepting and racially diverse climate when he moved to Paris in 1959. Memorable moments include 'Heart Breaking Woman', 'Watchin' My Stuff' & 'Walkin' Upside Your Head'. 1, 2.

EARL HOOKER - Simply the Best (1999)

Earl Hooker (1929 – 1970) was an American blues guitarist. Hooker was a Chicago slide guitarist in the same league as Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor, and his mentor, Robert Nighthawk. Some Chicago blues guitarists even consider Hooker to have been the greatest slide player ever.

There's only one complaint to be voiced about this best-of collection, which includes a great deal of material never previously available on CD: the lack of remastering. The scratches and static mar an otherwise crisp and energetic rendition of "Sweet Home Chicago," and may interfere with one's enjoyment of the clean, expressive guitar on "Drivin' Wheel." What can't be denied, however, is the compelling combination of Earl Hooker's virtuosity with an expressiveness that made his guitar solos far more than mere noodling. Just listen to his guitar work on the opening track, Muddy Waters's take on the classic "You Shook Me"--Hooker's guitar complements Waters's smoking vocals perfectly. In addition to much of his own material, chiefly from the late 1960s, this collection also features two tracks recorded with Johnny "Big Moose" Walker, including a slow-burning take on "The Sky Is Crying." He also backs up the late blues-R&B great Charles Brown on "Drifting Blues," and closes with a duet on "If You Miss 'Em... I Got 'Em" with his much more famous second cousin, John Lee. Earl Hooker's never had the name recognition accorded to T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, or others who started trends in the blues or even achieved crossover success. But he's a well-known name among bluesmen themselves, and Simply the Best illustrates why quite handily.

SHANNON CURFMAN - Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions (1999) & Fast Lane Addiction (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

"Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions" is the debut album by American blues-rock artist Shannon Curfman, released in 1999, for Arista Records. The title comes from a line in the Sheryl Crow song "Hard to Make a Stand", which Curfman covers on this album. The record was produced by Shannon Curfman herself, along with Kevin Bowe, and Tom Tucker.

"...belts out songs of love and denial with a soulful maturity influenced by the likes of Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin....even more astounding when you consider that she's only 14."

TRACKS (320kbps *):
01. Few and Far Between 02. No Riders 03. True Friends 04. If You Change Your Mind 05. Love Me Like That 06. Playing with Fire 07. I Don't Make Promises (I Can't Break) 08. Hard to Make a Stand 09. The Weight 10. Never Enough 11. I'm Coming Home

Shannon's 1999 debut album, "Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions", introduced us to a (barely) teenaged powerhouse blues singer and guitarist. Eight years later, the powerhouse has matured and still has that big voice and great chops. This time out, her focus is more hard rock oriented and she demonstrates that she can also work well in that genre. All but one of the songs on this cd are co-written by her, and Shannon belts them out with full throttle performances. For those who are unfamiliar with Shannon, be prepared to be blown away by her mature beyond her years voice and massive lead guitar skills.

TRACKS (VBR V1 *):
01. Fast Lane Addiction 02. Do Me 03. Little Things 04. Square In a Circle 05. Can't Let You Go 06. Why 07. Tangled 08. Another 09. Stone Cold Bitch 10. Sex Type Thing 11. I Can't Wait To Miss You

Knockin' on Heaven's Door 11. By the Time It Gets Dark 12. What Is True? 13. The Sea 14. Full Moon 15. Who Knows Where the Time Goes?

This magnificently produced multi-disc boxed set presents a complete portrait of Sandy Denny, the haunting singer, the melodic, mournful songwriter, and the mesmerizing bandleader of Fairport Convention and Fotheringay. Much of the material is previously unheard, but it's all of a piece with Denny's accomplished work on her solo albums and in her groups. The album makes the case for Denny as a major folk artist.

06. Coming Back (Across the Water)
07. Change Your Way of Living
08. Feels Kinda Funny
09. Work It Out
10. There's No Higher Love
11. I've Been Down

With Bernard Allison following the North Mississippi Allstars and Susan Tedeschi onto its roster, Tone-Cool has become home to the blues' most exciting young talents. Like his dad, the late Chicago guitar hero Luther Allison, Bernard likes to mix his music with rock and soul. This CD starts with a burst of uptempo funk ("The River's Rising") and quickly passes through six-string metallurgy ("I Just Came Back to Say Goodbye," with it's ZZ Top rhythmic bedrock and squealing guitar), Johnny Taylor-style ballads (like the Malaco-perfect "Work It Out"), and other permutations. Although Allison's voice possesses a serviceable simplicity, it's his guitar that really sings, chorus after chorus packed with keening wah-wah and daredevil bends. It's also full of down-to-the-bone blues runs, like the solo that tags the funky "Higher Love." Allison shows some Texas sting, too, especially on a Stevie Ray-style guitar epic called "I've Been Down," which should produce fireworks live. - amazon.com

ALBERT COLLINS AND THE ICEBREAKERS - Live In Japan (1984)

Recorded live at Kudan Kaikan, Tokyo, Japan on December 21, 1982.

01. Listen Here!
02. Tired Man
03. If Trouble Was Money
04. Jealous Man
05. Stormy Monday
06. Skatin'
07. All About My Girl

While Albert Collins' LIVE IN JAPAN doesn't achieve the incredible audience rapport of B.B. King's LIVE AT THE REGAL or reach the musically telepathic heights of THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND AT FILLMORE EAST, it does offer a fine snapshot of a talented veteran band at work, churning out honest, gutbucket funky blues circa 1982. LIVE IN JAPAN came in the middle of Collins' long tenure on Alligator, and the Icebreakers were his steady band for most of that time. Tenor man A.C. Reed was a recording artist in his own right, and Collins generously gives Reed a spot at the vocal mike in this set, for the stompin' shuffle "Jealous Man." Generally, though, it's Collins' show, and he makes the most of it, coming out stinging on the opening vamp "Listen Here," stretching out on the set's other slow blues, "If Trouble Was Money," and doing a cool segue from "Stormy Monday" into the instrumental "Skatin'."

07. Double Cross
08. Dreams
09. Are You Lonely for Me Baby
10. Turn On Your Love Light
11. Oncoming Traffic
12. Will The Circle Be Unbroken

Gregg Allman's tour in support of his debut solo LP, Laid Back, led to the recording of this album (originally two LPs) at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ. It's a match for Laid Back in musical value and then some, with a good, wide range of repertory and great performances throughout by all concerned, plunging head-first and deep into blues, R&B, honky tonk, and gospel. Strangely enough, the album contains only three of Laid Back's songs "Don't Mess Up a Good Thing" opens the show in a properly spirited, earthy manner, but it's the second song, "Queen of Hearts," in a soaring rendition, with gorgeous backing by Annie Sutton, Erin Dickins, and Lynn Rubin, and superb sax work by Randall Bramblett and David Brown, that shows Allman in his glory as a singer and bandleader. Allman gives a lively, raucous, honky tonk-style rendition of the Elvis Presley hit "I Feel So Bad," complete with a killer guitar solo by Tommy Talton, and "Turn on Your Lovelight" gets an extended treatment worthy of the Allman Brothers Band. One would expect that, with Chuck Leavell and Jaimoe present in the band, there were be more similarity to the Allmans' sound, and that they'd be prominently featured, but Tommy Talton and bassist Kenny Tibbetts get more of a spotlight. Several Allman Brothers songs are present here, in more laid-back and lyrical versions, and the Capricorn Records band Cowboy essentially serving as the core of Allman's touring band -- gets a featured spot with two songs, "Time Will Take Us" and "Where Can You Go," that leave one wanting to hear a lot more concert material from them, and from Talton as a singer. The Gregg Allman Tour was reissued on CD in late 2001 by Polydor in a clearer, sharper remastered edition that contains Martin Mull's complete introduction of the band. ~ All Music Guide

Almost exactly two years after the well-received The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster, the soulster is back, if somewhat less prodigious. There’s no denying the power of Foster’s monstrous voice, and while it’s tempting to say her smooth vibrato can do no wrong, the genre-bending singer bends a bit too much here. This disc too often veers away from her musical palette of folk, Americana, soul and blues, creating an overcooked confection of tunes. See the reggae-tinged “I Really Love You” or the Foster-penned “Dues Paid in Full” for examples of jaunty experiments gone awry. With a voice this strong, Foster’s music is most enjoyable on embattled scorchers with hard-nosed lyrics like title track “Truth!”, which features a rollicking guitar intro by Robben Ford (Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell) and a straight-for-the-gut message. Its unassuming intensity is Foster at her bravest.

Given how long and fruitful her career has been, and the scope of this collection an overview of her 1970s offerings Profile should no longer be subtitled Best of Emmylou Harris. That said, this is a weighty compilation of very important material that provides a solid introduction to the beginnings of one of America's most important and consistent recordings artists, a woman who has stretched not only country music whether Nash Vegas admits it or not but pop and rock as well. This material was recorded while Harris was still a "country" artist proper. Her readings of Don Gibson's "Sweet Dreams" (a gutsy tune to take on with your first record), the Louvins' "If I Could Win Your Love," Dolly Parton's "To Daddy," Buck Owens' "Together Again," A.P. Carter's "Hello Stranger," and Billy Sherrill's "Too Far Gone" established her in the genre as a traditionalist who understood countrypolitan as well. However, this collection also reveals her mastery of the different periods and regions of the music. More interesting and compelling is her version of Delbert McClinton's "Two More Bottles of Wine," which made an R&B tune into a country song, and "Boulder to Birmingham," a song she co-wrote with Bill Danoff that straddles Woody Guthrie's American folk music and a newly emerging country music. The only shortcoming of this collection is that it fails to showcase the newer material she had been working on during these years. For instance, there are no Rodney Crowell tunes present. 1.

1996 greatest hits release from British blues guitarist Alvin Lee's rock quartet, Ten Years After. Includes what is probably their best-known song, 'I'd Love to Change the World', plus 'I'm Going Home', 'Love Like a Man' & eleven more. 1, 2.

In his 1971 Elvis Presley biography, rock journalist Jerry Hopkins claimed Alvin Lee named his band "Ten Years After" because they started ten years after Presley (by another source, the name Ten Years After was taken in 1966 from London's local radio listings – one radio station was called Ten Years After (the end of national service in the UK).

FRANK MARINO & MAHOGANY RUSH - Real Live! (2004)

Do you remember Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush? How could you forget the great guitar playing of this rock icon? Frank Marino is the guitarist and leader of Canadian hard rock band Mahogany Rush. The band had its peak of popularity in the 1970s and toured extensively playing such venues as California Jam II together with bands such as Aerosmith and Heart. Marino is still active; as of 2008, recording and touring under his own name and has also been involved in blues recordings with other artists as well.

To explain the name, Mahogany Rush, Marino says, "In fact, the mental condition (the acid trip) that became my daily life in my early teens, was due to having taken psychedelic drugs to the point of being hospitalized, and that condition produced, eventually, the name or term "mahogany rush", so in a way it was "related" to the drugs themselves. But it was more related to the mental experience. Mahogany Rush was, basically, the only way I could describe a certain aspect of that "trip" to others who couldn't understand it at the time, and still can't really do so now." - wiki 1, 2, 3.

TOM PETTY - Wildflowers (1994)

15. Wake Up Time

It is hard to believe that Tom Petty first stepped onto the rock & roll carousel eighteen years ago. Hard to believe because the best moments of his sizable catalog the perfect guitar pop of "American Girl," the faux-psychedelia of "Don't Come Around Here No More," the sharp-tongued putdowns like "Century City" and "Zombie Zoo", have all developed a rare timeless quality. A quality that few, if any, of his contemporaries (Eddie Money, the Cars, etc.) were able to achieve. Harder, still, because in the course of his long career we've never noticed Petty gettin' on in years or becoming an anachronism. So it is somehow appropriate that on WILDFLOWERS, his second "solo" ride without the full complement of the Heartbreakers, Petty's musings fall predominantly toward his current role in the world. Throughout these reflections Tom Petty plays the kid's game he's been good at for years ("but let me get to the point, let's roll another joint" he sneers knowingly in "You Don't Know How It Feels"). More often than not, the future the songwriter envisions for himself is full of doubts ("Time To Move On") and soon-to-be-dull memories ("Don't Fade On Me"). This makes WILDFLOWERS speak in a far more subdued and wistful tone than most Petty records, creating a darker self-conscious persona. Tom Petty understands that he's far too established to keep playing a rebellious, one-dimensional rock & roll singer. On WILDFLOWERS he attempts to ground this understanding in a purposeful existence. - CDUniverse

"You Don't Know How It Feels" won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. WILDFLOWERS won a 1996 Grammy for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. WILDFLOWERS was also nominated for Best Rock Album.

Jeff Beck has made many strange albums, but none were ever quite as strange as this. With the Big Town Playboys offering support, Beck rips through 18 Gene Vincent numbers (not "Be-Bop-a-Lula," however), paying tribute to Vincent's guitarist, Cliff Gallup. Beck sounds terrific as he reconstructs Gallup's parts, but he doesn't add anything to the originals. Still, Crazy Legs is a fun listen and offers many insights into Beck's playing, if not Gallup's. ~ All Music Guide

"Steve Winwood" is the debut solo album by blue-eyed soulster Steve Winwood. It was released three years after the break-up of Traffic. Despite high commercial expectations, it did not sell well, reaching only #22 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Unfairly overlooked by many of his fans, Steve Winwood's self-titled debut solo album is a wonderful smooth-groover, filled with melodic songs and excellent musical chops. If some of the album sounds like Winwood's old band Traffic, it's because four of the six songs were co-written by Winwood's partner in Traffic, drummer Jim Capaldi, and Traffic percussionist Rebop Kwaku-Baah also plays on a couple of tracks.

Becky Barksdale is a guitar-playing wailer from Port Arthur, Texas who blends the flavors of electric blues and rock to create an intense, brooding, powerfully sensual style."Real Live" was recorded live at Spinout's recording studios in Burbank, California. On stage, Becky Barksdale rocks the blues with convincing authority, combining fluid, fiery guitar licks with supple, edgy vocals. The rough textures of her voice and the raw passion of her singing have invited comparisons to Port Arthur hometown heroine Janis Joplin, a correlation both flattering and disturbing to a woman who goes her own way. While Becky finds comfort in the instant communication of a dark blues groove, she craves the adventure of experimental forms and feels compelled to go deep."Satisfy Me," a Barksdale original from the 1996 House of Blues Hot Biscuits Sampler, works the same thematic territory as Bessie Smith's "Do Your Duty," with decidedly different results. With the release of the powerful, ground-breaking "Real Live" in 1999, Becky documents the reason for all of the buzz surrounding her.Ten previously unreleased original tracks and a dramatic cover of the Willie Dixon classic "I Just Wanna Make Love to You" place her as one of blues' most dynamic performers.

Wanda Johnson is an intense and emotional modern singer whose music is a blend of soul, pop, blues, gospel, and folk influences. "Natural Resource" is her second CD, a collection of fourteen new original songs (some of which she wrote, others written by producer/bandleader Shrimp City Slim). Some rockin', some tender, all passionate. Wanda comes from a large farming family and has lived with music all her life. She has been performing semi-professionally since the early 1990s. Many, after seeing her perform at the Chicago Blues Festival, Pocono Blues Festival, overseas (Italy, France, China), wonder when she will become a household name. Both this album and her first CD "Call Me Miss Wanda" have numerous songs in regular rotation on XM Satellite's "Bluesville" radio station. And one track off her first CD was used for a national TV/radio ad campaign for Curves For Women. That's only the beginning. Get on board with this beautiful and fresh talent for the international music scene. 1, 2.

His parents moved the family to Sydney when Stoneking was eleven, and at the age of 23 he set out on his own eventually landing in Melbourne. It was there that Stoneking formed the band The Blue Tits who recorded one album before breaking up after the death of their mandolin player. Stoneking continued to play and record his original mix of blues/hokum/jungle music as a solo artist and in 2006 released the remarkably brilliant blues/hokum album, King Hokum. Two years after the release of his internationally acclaimed debut album King Hokum, the inimitable C.W. Stoneking – guitar & tenor banjo player, singer/songwriter and raconteur – returns with a new collection of original tunes, Jungle Blues. Hair-raising stories that will haunt dreams, voodoo tunes, full-blown jungle epics, desolate guitar and singing-country-blues, calypso-styled, black magic murder ballads, CW Stoneking and his Primitive Horn Orchestra will tell the Jungle Blues story from all sides. *

04. Just Can't Wait
05. I Do
06. Centerfold
07. Come Back
08. Wild Man
09. One Last Kiss
10. Land of a Thousand Dances

Featuring a hodgepodge of material taken from the band's three biggest career selling records (all on EMI), Flashback is an all too brief ten-track affair which includes a handful of classics like "Love Stinks," "Centerfold," "Freeze Frame," and a couple of other essential J. Geils Band "deep" cuts like "Flamethrower" and the terrific "Just Can't Wait." Incomprehensibly, other essentials like "Sanctuary," "Teresa," "Just Can't Stop Me," "Nightime," and even the hilarious "Piss on the Wall" (not so essential) are nowhere to be found. Glancing over the track listing, it's obvious that EMI spent next to no time putting together this compilation and decided to issue it as some sort of contractual obligation (even though Peter Wolf would continue to release solo records for the label in years to come) or perhaps as a forgone catalog piece. And that's too bad. It sure would have been nice to hear the live version of "Love Stinks" from Showtime (which is introduced by Wolf's now legendary, "Adam and Eve were smoking weed in the Garden of Eden" rap) or perhaps some other un-released live gems from the band's Freeze Frame tour -- their biggest outing ever. Wisely, the label chose to completely shun the band's god-awful post-Peter Wolf release You're Getting Even While I'm Getting I'm Getting Odd. As far as compilation records go, this one's the weakest of all the J. Geils Band anthologies. For a more thorough appreciation, invest in the much superior Rhino collection Houseparty: Anthology. Better yet, pick up one of the band's old live records like Blow Your Face Out or even Full House (both feature material from the band's superior Atlantic releases). ~ All Music Guide

ROBERTA FLACK - Softly With These Songs: The Best Of Roberta Flack (1993)

Digitally remastered collection of one of the best ballad singers the U.S. ever produced. Roberta Flack was originally a D.C. music teacher before she rose to Top 40 prominence in the early 1970's with the arresting single "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". It's quiet and solitude flew in the face of those glam days and started Flack on a long, prosperous career. The follow up single "Killing Me Softly (With His Song)" further solidified her pop credentials, as it stayed at #1 for months. This volume includes all her chart hits and duets of that era as well as her 80's and 90's hits, where she hit the Top Ten once more in a duet with reggae star Maxi Priest on "Set The Night To Music". Renewed attention came her way with the Fugee's cover of "Killing Me Softly" topping the charts again near the end of the 90's with Flack giving the cover her blessing and even performing with the band live. She is lady of grace, class & sophistication with a God given instrument.

WILLIE NELSON AND ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL - Willie And The Wheel (2009)

Jerry Wexler's long-overdue concept album takes Willie Nelson back to his musical roots. Teamed up with Ray Benson and the master musicianship of Asleep at the Wheel, this instant classic celebrates the timeless appeal of a most unique and spirited American music genre. Fall in love with Western Swing...again.

Now is as good a time as any to revive Western Swing, the sanguine style of music that swept through dance halls during the Great Depression, said J. Freedom du Lac in the Washington Post. And who better than Willie Nelson to breath life into lost standards of the American Southwest? “One of the first great albums of 2009,” Willie and the Wheel is a lively, freewheeling “romp through the American genre” that brought together country, rural folk, blues, jazz swing and Dixieland. And Nelson has found the “perfect partners” in Western Swing preservationists Asleep at the Wheel.

GRAHAM NASH - Reflections (2009)

Graham Nash is a British singer-songwriter known for his light tenor vocals and for his songwriting contributions with the British pop group The Hollies, and with the folk-rock band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Perhaps the most underrated member of CSN&Y quartet, this 3-CD retrospective spanning 40 years reminds us that Graham Nash's importance and value to that alchemical blending was never so much his writing but his unrivaled ear for harmony. Arranged chronologically, "Reflections" spans Nash’s recordings from 1967 to 2007, starting with a trio of singles he released with The Hollies in 1967: “On A Carousel,” “Carrie Anne” and “King Midas In Reverse.” Nash left the group a year later, joining with Crosby and Stills to record the trio’s self-titled album, which earned them the Grammy for “Best New Artist.” "Reflections" gathers several songs from that album—and its follow-up, released a few months later with the addition of Young including “Pre-Road Downs,” “Marrakesh Express,” “Our House” and “Teach Your Children.” The set also includes tracks from the group’s other albums: “Just A Song Before I Go,” “Wasted On The Way” and “Heartland.” Over the years, Crosby and Nash have recorded a number of albums as a duo. "Reflections" features several gems from those collaborations with “Immigration Man,” “To The Last Whale,” “Jesus Of Rio” and more. The collection also brings together several classics from Nash’s four solo albums, ranging from the politically-charged (“Military Madness” and “Chicago/We Can Change The World”) to the emotionally raw (“Simple Man” and “Sleep Song”) and the socially conscious (“Barrel Of Pain” and “Chippin’ Away.”) "Reflections" spotlights 32 songs with different mixes and alternate versions that have never been released. Among the highlights is Nash’s solo acoustic demo of “Right Between The Eyes.” Recorded during the Déjŕ Vu session, a live version of the track popped up in 1971 on a CSN&Y live album. The compilation contains six unreleased tracks, including “Water From The Moon,” “Try To Find Me” and “In Your Name,” 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

The Ike and Tina Turner Story features classic Ike & Tina Turner songs including their very first bona-fide hit "A Fool in Love," a concoction of soul and raw vulnerability that shook the music world when it was released in 1960. The 3-CD box set also includes top hits and fan favorites "Proud Mary," "Nutbush City Limits," "I've Been Loving You Too Long," "Come Together, "Honky Tonk Woman," "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," The Ikettes smash hit "I'm Blue (Gong Gong Song)" and a special live performance of "River Deep, Mountain High." And since nothing could match the electricity of their live performances, the third disc in the collection comes with the entire 1969 live album "Live.....In Person" (never available before on CD), which includes songs like "Respect" and "Son of A Preacher Man." During their musical reign, Ike and Tina dominated the R&B and pop charts. Ike is credited with being the brilliant architect that crafted their concerts' frenetic pace, feverish dance routines, impeccable musicianship and vigorous interplay between the band members and the singers. Even more appealing were their songs, which transcended all genres (particularly soul and rock), including classic interpretations of The Beatles' "Come Together" and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary," which became Ike and Tina's biggest hit. T. Rex's Marc Bolan even played an uncredited guitar on "Sexy Ida" and on another of their biggest hits, "Nutbush City Limits." Their crossover success became official when The Rolling Stones brought Ike & Tina onto their 1969 US tour.

The box set highlights Ike's genius as a musician, songwriter, producer and guiding force in the evolution of African American music from juke joint blues to R&B and then to soul and funk while Tina's unparalleled vocals and explosive performances are evident throughout the set.

MIKE OLDFIELD - Tubular Bells

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tubular Bells is the debut record album of English musician Mike Oldfield, released in 1973. The late Vivian Stanshall provided the voice of the "Master of Ceremonies" who reads off the list of instruments at the end of the first movement. The piece was later orchestrated by David Bedford for The Orchestral Tubular Bells version and it had two sequels in the 1990s, Tubular Bells II and III. Finally, the album was fully re-recorded in 2003 for its 30th anniversary as Tubular Bells 2003.

This is one of the most eclectic musical masterpieces of all time. Covering the range from rock to classical to funk to ambient and back like a frantic marathon runner, this is a true original piece of music. Mike Oldfield has melded the genres of rock and classical unlike any other. Only the progressive greats like Yes, King Crimson, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Pink Floyd have succeeded at such eccentricity and even then, this truly a different and original musical masterpiece! A classic!!!

RARE BIRD - Symphaty (1976)

Rare Bird was a progressive rock band founded in 1969. Rare Bird came together in October 1969 when organist Graham Field, keyboardist Dave Kaffinetti, drummer Mark Ashton, and vocalist Steve Gould envisioned a two-keyboard rock sound without guitars. They released their debut before the end of the year, featuring the minor radio hit "Sympathy." The next year they released As Your Mind Flies By, a dark and heavier album that put further emphasis on Gould's melodramatic singing style. Field and Ashton left the group before Epic Forest, which saw new drummer Fred Kelly bring in guitarist Andy Curtis to revamp their sound into a more folk-oriented direction. Gould also picked up the guitar at this point, and the music became much more about their guitar interplay than anything else. By 1973's Somebody's Watching, interest had waned in their efforts, leaving the group with a dwindling fan base. Still, they managed to release one more album, 1974's Born Again, which featured an entirely different sound than the progressive rock of their first two albums. The band's demise was followed by a collection, Sympathy, which took its material from the first two albums only. ~ All Music Guide

01. Sympathy
02. You Went Away
03. Nature's Fruit
04. Bird On A Wing
05. What You Want To Know
06. Beautiful Scarlet
07. Hammerhead
08. I'm Thinking
09. As Your Mind Flies By

The Sympathy compilation was actually released in 1976, not 1990 (1990 was the year it got issued on CD), on the Charisma Perspective label. Charisma Perspective was simply the label's compilation division, who had a habit of only covering two albums. And Rare Bird was no exception. They only recorded two albums on Charisma, which this compilation obviously covers. So you get material from the original 1969-70 lineup of vocalist/bassist Steve Gould, drummer Mark Ashton, and keyboardists Graham Field and David Kaffinetti.

GENESIS

Genesis formed in 1966 at Charterhouse prep school, England; original members included Tony Banks (born March 27, 1950, in England), keyboards; Michael Rutherford (born October 2, 1950, in England), guitar, bass, and vocals; Peter Gabriel (born May 13, 1950 in England), vocals (quit band, 1974); and Anthony Philips, guitar, (quit, 1970). Later additions include Phil Collins, (born January 31, 1951, in London, England), drums, vocals (joined band, 1970); and Steve Hackett (born February 12, 1950, in England), guitar (joined band, 1970; quit, 1977). Band recorded first LP, From Genesis to Revelation , 1969; signed with Charisma label, 1970; vocalist Peter Gabriel quit band, 1974; drummer Phil Collins became lead vocalist, 1976, with drummers Chester Thompson and Bill Bruford added for tours; guitarist Steve Hacket departs, 1977; all three remaining band members release solo LPs--Banks (1979), Rutherford (1980), and Collins (1981),while continuing to produce records as Genesis; band releases highly successful LP Invisible Touch , 1986, followed by $60 million world tour under sponsorship of Michelob beer, 1987.

Genesis is one of only a handful of rock music groups that has endured more than two decades in the ebb and flow of the show business spotlight, and this is more a tribute to the group's versatility and flexibility than any phenomenal and enduring popularity. Genesis has never been in the same league as such all-time great English supergroups as the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, or Led Zeppelin. They have never reached the absolute zenith of the pop world at any one moment, as each of the above groups have done and yet they have been more consistent, quietly making music year in and year out without a lot of fanfare or dramatic personality clashes.

V.A. - 50 Years Of Bluegrass Hits Vol.1 - Vol.4 (1992)

Bluegrass music is a form of American roots music, and is a sub-genre of country music. It has its own roots in Irish, Scottish and English traditional music. Bluegrass was inspired by the music of immigrants from the United Kingdom and Ireland (particularly the Scots-Irish immigrants in Appalachia), as well as jazz and blues. In bluegrass, as in jazz, each instrument takes its turn playing the melody and improvising around it, while the others perform accompaniment. This is in contrast to old-time music, in which all instruments play the melody together or one instrument carries the lead throughout while the others provide accompaniment. Traditional bluegrass is typically based around acoustic stringed instruments, such as mandolin, acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, and upright bass, with or without vocals. - wiki

NAZZ

Nazz was an early psychedelic garage rock band from the 1960s. Though sometimes mistakenly called "The Nazz", the group's official name on all records and press materials is simply "Nazz", without the definite article. The band was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1967 by Todd Rundgren (lead guitar) and Carson Van Osten (bass guitar). Thom Mooney (drums, formerly of the Munchkins) and Robert "Stewkey" Antoni (vocals, keyboard) joined before their first concert, opening for the Doors in 1967. Nazz took their name from the song "The Nazz are Blue" by The Yardbirds from their album Roger the Engineer. That song, in turn, took its title from Lord Buckley's comic monologue, "The Nazz," which is a re-telling of the tale of Jesus of Nazareth. It is also often erroneously said that the band took its name from a line in the David Bowie song "Ziggy Stardust" which goes: "He was the nazz, with god-given ass..." but that song appeared in 1972, long after the first Nazz album, which appeared in 1968.

SHEMEKIA COPELAND - Never Going Back (2009)

Shemekia Copeland is an American blues singer. Born in Harlem on April 10, 1979, she is the daughter of blues guitarist and singer Johnny Copeland. She began to pursue a singing career in earnest at age 16, when her father's health began to decline; he took Shemekia on tour as his opening act, which helped establish her name on the blues circuit. Copeland graduated in 1997 from Teaneck High School in Teaneck, New Jersey. She landed a record deal with Alligator, which issued her debut album Turn the Heat Up! in 1998, following it up with a tour of the blues festival circuit in America and Europe. Her second album, Wicked, was released in 2000 and featured a duet with one of her heroes, early R&B diva Ruth Brown. It earned her three W.C. Handy Awards. The follow-up record, Talking to Strangers, was produced by Dr. John, and in 2005 she released The Soul Truth, produced by Steve Cropper.

For her new record "Never Going Back", Shemekia Copeland enlisted producer Oliver Wood, one half of the Wood Brothers band (the other is Chris Wood, member of Medeski, Martin & Wood), to help bring her beyond her blues comfort zone and coax the genre into a new generation. *

"Buckingham Nicks" is a 10-track LP by Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. The album, produced and engineered by Keith Olsen, was recorded in 1973 for Polydor Records, right after Buckingham and Nicks disbanded their long-time band, Fritz. It was released that September and proved to be a commercial failure. The album has since gained cult status. It was reissued in 1976 when Buckingham and Nicks hit the big time with Fleetwood Mac. It should be noted that Nicks' name is misspelled as "Stevi" on the record. A short tour through the American south commenced after the release of the album; Buckingham and Nicks had already joined Fleetwood Mac, but the band was still committed to the dates that were scheduled. Bootlegged concert recordings have recently surfaced on fan-sites and on peer-to-peer trading sites of two concerts in Tuscaloosa and Mobile. These tours featured early performances of Rhiannon, Sorcerer, and Monday Morning. The touring band consisted of Tom Moncrieff on bass (who later played bass on Nicks' first solo album Bella Donna), Bob Aguirre (from Fritz) on drums, and Gary "Hoppy" Hodges who played drums on the album. - wiki

06. Xanax

08. You Get Off On Me

10. Harpoon
11. Same As You

This album resonates with sheer power. Like a steamroller tearing down a house, Scott Henderson and company comes shining through with Tore Down House, a gripping list of songs that beg the listener to truly appreciate the blues. Throughout the compilation, Henderson explores his diverse range of blues improvisation, using a plethora of pedals and effects, but not as so to diminish the full strength of the classic Fender Strat sound. "Dolemite" gets the jam going with a spontaneous free-for-all blues session. "I Hate You" is a romantic, witty ballad seemingly coming from the lost decade of the '50s. "Darling you ruined my life/so I hate you and I always will," sings guest Thelma Houston with chants of "You suck" in the background, granting a message of what one would feel about those who can't stand to be around that certain someone that's destroying their life. "Take this job and shove it./I'm going to guitar school," shouts the fiery Henderson in the rocking blues breaker, "Gittar School." With six other surprises featured on Tore Down House, it's a sure bet the first time listener of this artist's art will become a longtime fan. His band features a splendid group of experienced blues rockers, such as the likes of Pat O'Brien on harmonica, Dave Carpenter on bass, Kirk Covington on drums, Scott Kinsley on keyboards, and a host of sax, trumpet, and other brass players. This is a hands down classic blues album and a must for those who are crazy for the genre. - All Music Guide

FLEETWOOD MAC - The Blues Years (1991)

Fleetwood Mac are a British/American rock band formed in 1967 that have experienced a high turnover of personnel and varied levels of success. From the band's inception through the end of 1974, no incarnation of Fleetwood Mac lasted as long as two years. The only member present in the band from the very beginning is its namesake drummer Mick Fleetwood. Bassist John McVie, despite his giving part of his name to the band, did not play on their first single nor at their first concerts. Keyboardist Christine McVie has, to date, appeared on all but two albums, either as a member or as a session musician. She also supplied the artwork for the album Kiln House. The two most successful periods for the band were during the late 1960s British blues boom, when they were led by guitarist Peter Green; and from 1975-87, with more pop-orientation, featuring Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. The band enjoyed more modest success in the intervening period between 1971 and 1974, with the line-up that included Bob Welch, and also during the 1990s which saw more personnel changes before the return of Nicks and Buckingham in 1997, and more recently, the departure of Christine McVie. - wiki

Originally called Peter Greenąs Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie first met as members of John Mayalląs Bluesbreakers in 1967 and went on to form their own group, adding slide guitarist Jeremy Spencer to the line up. They released a string of hit singles, including "Black Magic Woman," "Oh Well," and "Green Manalishi," cementing Greenąs status as one of the worldąs great blues guitarists.

07. Foul Play

10. New Blood

1986's "Strong Persuader" was a milestone both for Robert Cray and blues in the '80s. It earned Cray, a veteran of the Pacific Northwest blues scene, both his first solo Grammy and Top 30 hit ("Smoking Gun") along with a lift out of the blues ghetto which he'd been excelling in during recent years. As for the blues themselves, Cray infused fresh blood into a genre that had been limping along in that particular decade. With a smooth singing style to go with an equally recognizable guitar tone, Cray developed a sound that owed as much to soul stylist O.V. Wright as it did to Texas guitarist Albert Collins (with whom Cray had won a Grammy along with Johnny Copeland the prior year). The use of the Memphis Horns strengthened the soul connection on songs such as the punchy "Nothing But A Woman" and the ching effervescence of "Guess I Showed Her." Of course, Cray's heart lay in the blues and when he wasn't lamenting the woes of infidelity in "Right Next Door (Because Of Me)" and a bad break-up in "Still Around," his guitar playing smoldered throughout the forlorn "New Blood."

Kicking things off with a whimper, not a bang, Kate Bush quietly released her 1978 debut, "The Kick Inside" and that disc still to this day affects an incredible number people, Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan among them. There are so many elements that make this disc unique Kate's soaring soprano, her warm piano playing, but the one thing that perhaps sticks out most is how different her sounds were from anything else circulating at that time. Ten years before "alternative" hit the forefront, this music was neither easy nor palatable, truly an alternative from the other styles out there. Among the more legendary tracks, search out "The Man with the Child in His Eyes" and her timeless classic "Wuthering Heights." amazon.com
