JOHN MARTYN - Sweet Little Mysteries: The Island Anthology (1994)

John Martyn was Island Records' first white solo performer. Having debuted as a fresh-faced teenage folky with 1967's London Conversation, he soon embarked on a restless musical odyssey. Built on a foundation of folk, blues, and jazz, Martyn's music has ranged from effects-laden experimentation, through rock, to fusion-influenced pop. This overview of Martyn's Island recordings ignores his first two albums and two releases with then-wife Beverley, picking up with Bless the Weather (1971). Although ornate love songs from that record like "Head and Heart" remain close to Martyn's traditionalist roots, the instrumental "Glistening Glyndebourne" shows he was keen to distance himself from the Donovan-Cat Stevens orbit of twee folk-pop. Solid Air, 1973's sublime follow-up, is well represented here. On it, Martyn moved effortlessly among light acoustic tunes ("Over the Hill"), darker, jazzier numbers ("Solid Air," his ode to friend Nick Drake), and gizmo-enhanced excursions (his rendering of Skip James' "I'd Rather Be the Devil"). Martyn pursued his experimental inclinations further with the jazz-folkadelic Inside Out (1973); that album's adventurous spirit is captured by the gently droning "Eibhli Ghail Chiuin Ni Chearbhaill," which reworks a 19th century Celtic folk tune with such late 20th century rock tools as a fuzzbox and phase-shifter. Sunday's Child (1974) returned to a more focused song format, as demonstrated by the mournful "Spencer the Rover." Martyn's next studio venture, One World (1977), combined chilled-out moodscapes ("Small Hours") with slick, adult-oriented pop and rock ("Dancing"), the latter tendency even more prominent on Grace & Danger (1980) and exemplified by the delicate "Sweet Little Mystery." While Martyn's later Island releases were less memorable, those mid-'80s numbers collected here hold up well. This album provides a great introduction to John Martyn; its only weakness is the omission of his earliest efforts, a sampling of which would give a fuller sense of his work's evolution. - allmusic.com 1, 2, 3.

William Norris "Billy" Powell (June 3, 1952 – January 28, 2009) RIP
![]()
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Billy Powell, the original keyboard player with the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, died early Wednesday at his Orange Park home. Powell was 56.
Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, Powell grew up in a military family (his father was in the navy) and spent several years of his childhood living in Italy where his father was stationed. After his father died of cancer in 1960, he moved with his family back to the United States and settled in Jacksonville, Florida. His mother enrolled him at the Sanford Naval Academy in Sanford, Florida. While at Sanford, Billy's interest in music began to grow. He began taking piano lessons from a local teacher named Madeleine Brown. She swore he did not need her, claiming that Billy was a natural and picked things up well on his own.
Billy returned to Jacksonville where he enrolled at Bishop Kenny High School. It was here that he met Leon Wilkeson, future bassist for Lynyrd Skynyrd. The two soon became close friends. When he graduated in 1970, he enrolled briefly in a community college, majoring in Music Theory. Around this time he found work as a roadie for Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Powell remained a roadie for Skynyrd until 1972, when the band was hired to play the Bolles School prom. After setting up the band's equipment, Billy sat down at a piano in the corner of the room and began to play his own version of 'Free Bird'. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant was impressed, and invited Powell to join Lynyrd Skynyrd officially as their new keyboard player. In 1973, Lynyrd Skynyrd was signed to MCA Records and received national exposure with the release of their first album, (pronounced 'lh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd). The bands popularity soared in 1974 with their follow-up album, Second Helping, which featured their highest-charting single, "Sweet Home Alabama". The band enjoyed great popularity over the next three years, culminating in the 1977 release of Street Survivors, which many considered to be their strongest effort to date. However, three days after the release of Street Survivors, Skynyrd's chartered plane crashed into a forest near McComb, Mississippi. The crash took the lives of singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines, and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick. The remainder of the band suffered injuries ranging from mild to severe. Powell suffered severe facial lacerations, almost completely losing his nose but was otherwise relatively uninjured. He was the first to be released from the hospital, and the only member able to attend the funerals of his fallen bandmates. During the time between the plane crash and the Lynyrd Skynyrd reunion in 1987, Powell briefly joined a Christian rock band named Vision. His keyboard playing was often spotlighted in Vision concerts. Powell also spoke during the concerts about his newly found faith in Jesus Christ. Powell rejoined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1987 for a tribute tour, and remained with the band until his death. Guitarist Gary Rossington is the only member from the classic lineup who continues to record and perform with the reunited band today.

TRAFFIC - Traffic (1968)
After dispensing with his services in December 1967, the remaining members of Traffic reinstated Dave Mason in the group in the spring of 1968 as they strled to write enough material for their impending second album. The result was a disc evenly divided between Mason's catchy folk-rock compositions and Steve Winwood's compelling rock jams. Mason's material was the most appealing both initially and eventually: the lead-off track, a jaunty effort called "You Can All Join In," became a European hit, and "Feelin' Alright?" turned out to be the only real standard to emerge from the album after it started earning cover versions from Joe Cocker and others in the 1970s. Winwood's efforts, with their haunting keyboard-based melodies augmented by Chris Wood's reed work and Jim Capaldi's exotic rhythms, work better as musical efforts than lyrical ones. Primary lyricist Capaldi's words tend to be impressionistic reveries or vague psychological reflections; the most satisfying is the shaggy-dog story "Forty Thousand Headmen," which doesn't really make any sense as anything other than a dream. But the lyrics to Winwood/Capaldi compositions take a back seat to the playing and Winwood's soulful voice. As Mason's simpler, more direct performances alternate with the more complex Winwood tunes, the album is well-balanced. It's too bad that the musicians were not able to maintain that balance in person; for the second time in two albums, Mason found himself dismissed from the group just as an LP to which he'd made a major contribution hit the stores. Only a few months after that, the band itself split up, but not before scoring their second consecutive Top Ten ranking in the U.K.; the album also reached the Top 20 in the US, breaking the temporarily defunct group stateside. ~ All Music Guide *

BUDDY GUY - The Very Best Of Buddy Guy (1992)
Legendary Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy was one of the most progressive blues artists of the '50s and '60s who still maintained roots in the Windy City tradition pioneered by the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and B.B. King. This retrospective examines several phases of the singer/guitarist's career, from his earliest demos in 1957 to his early-'80s recordings, with stellar examples of what made Guy a legend in his own time. "When My Left Eye Jumps" is a haunting 1962 recording of an eerie Willie Dixon composition, with pianist Lafayette Leake supporting Guy's telling of the superstitious tale. "My Time After a While" showcases the urgent, emotive vocal and piercing, rapid-fire guitar that were Guy's trademarks. The 1970 version included here of one of Guy's earliest singles, "First Time I Met the Blues" is a tour-de-force, an unforgettable, scorching portrait of a man who cannot escape from the dark side of life. There are so many great tracks to choose from in Guy's catalog that no compilation could ever be truly comprehensive, but this one comes incredibly close. THE VERY BEST OF BUDDY GUY contains recordings from 1958-1985. 1, 2.

Like those albums, there's a theme running through these 12 songs, a romantic wistfulness which allies standards like "My Funny Valentine" with lesser-known gems like "Little Girl Blue." Unlike TORCH, MY ROMANCE is a period-style recording, with intimate, almost entirely acoustic arrangements, and the tasteful use of a full orchestra. This is one of the most satisfying albums of Simon's career. Carly Simon's MY ROMANCE, while lacking hits on the level of its predecessor, 1987's COMING AROUND AGAIN, solidified the singer-songwriter's commercial and artistic comeback. A second foray into the world of jazz and pop standards, following 1981's TORCH, MY ROMANCE pulls off the interesting feat of being an extremely personal-sounding album constructed almost entirely of covers, in the same vein as Frank Sinatra's classic string of concept albums with Nelson Riddle in the '50s. *

IVEYS - Maybe Tomorrow (1969)
"Maybe Tomorrow" was the only album released by The Iveys (who later called themselves Badfinger). It was issued in 1969 on the Apple label in Japan, West Germany and Italy. Although the album was scheduled to be released worldwide, the release in the U.S. and the U.K. at that time was halted without explanation. Many reasons for halting the album have been sested by the band and Apple employees, but the most common theory is that Apple's newly-hired president, Allen Klein, stopped all non-Beatle releases on Apple until he could examine the company's finances, which were in disarray at the time. *
A majority of the album's songs were later issued as Badfinger songs on the Badfinger album Magic Christian Music.

Badfinger was a rock band formed in Swansea, Wales in the early 1960s and was one of the earliest representatives of the power pop genre. During the early 1970s the band was tagged as the heir apparent to The Beatles, partly because of their close working relationship with the 'Fab Four' and partly because of their similar sound. However, Badfinger fell victim to some of the worst elements of the music industry, resulting in its two principal singers and songwriters committing suicide in 1975 and 1983. "Magic Christian Music" is an album, released in early 1970 on Apple Records. Three tracks from the LP are featured in the film The Magic Christian, which also gives the album its title. *

Jefferson Starship is an American rock band that was popular in the 1970s and 1980s. It evolved from a Paul Kantner album project entitled Blows Against the Empire (issued before the first break-up of the original Jefferson Airplane), featuring an ad-hoc group of all-star musicians who called themselves Jefferson Starship.
Gold is a 1979 compilation album by Jefferson Starship. The tracks come from their 1974 - 1978 albums, Dragon Fly, Red Octopus, Spitfire, and Earth. The original record release also contained a single, "Light the Sky on Fire", that was recorded for the Star Wars Holiday Special, along with an extra track from Dragon Fly. This single is included in the later CD releases as tracks 6 and 12. The single reached #66 on the Billboard charts. 1, 2.

One of country music's true superstars with one of his best collections of tunes ever, coupled with an impressive interactive scrapbook, all on one CD. Originally available only on the Internet, the CD's interactive features include interviews with everyone from Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings to George W. Bush. But it is the music here that takes center stage. The songs on "Me and the Drummer" are a flashback to a simpler time, reminiscent of the Western-flavored tunes featured on his "Red Headed Stranger" and "Tougher Than Leather" releases. The lyrics are compelling, Nelson's vocals are as smooth as ever before, and the music provided by the Offenders is Texas cool. They operate on the "less-is-more" principal, and it is the perfect compliment for Nelson's distinct vocal style. "Rainy Day Blues" is a shuffling country-blues with a lot of Nelson's trademark acoustic lead picking, and "I'd Rather You Didn't Love Me" is pure Nelson at his best. From the swing of "I Guess I've Come to Live Here in Your Eyes" to the waltz of "Me and the Drummer," this is Willie Nelson at his honky tonkin' best. *

The blue-collar freeway eatery has teemed with Rounder Records to provide this 11-track advertisement for "beef tips and country vegetables" that is according to the liner notes "as pleasing and as enjoyable as anything you'd find at any Cracker Barrel Old Country Store." This however is a matter of taste, as Krauss and company seem reluctant to revisit anything that doesn't appear on Lonely Runs Both Ways, New Favorite, or Forget About It. While good enough, Home on the Highways is the musical equivalent of a pot roast, wholly predictable and occasionally comforting. ~ All Music Guide *

Originally released as a double LP in 1972, Amazing Grace cracked the Billboard Top Ten upon its release, making it one of the bestselling gospel records of all time. Grace was recorded in a large Baptist church with an ultraenthusiastic, loving audience in the pews and a full, funky, band as well as the Southern California Community Choir under the direction of her mentor Rev. James Cleveland. Her voice is melismatic and intensely emotional, yet pure and controlled - as if she were directly channeling the Holy Ghost. Aretha's father, the brilliant preacher Rev. C.L. Franklin, makes a brief, proud appearance, remarking how "she has never left the church!" Highlights include the beautiful "Wholy Holy," an 11-minute, heart-stopping "Amazing Grace," and Inez Andrews's stirring song "Mary, Don't You Weep." Way more than a return-to-the-roots record, the set is an inspired gospel-soul workout that arguably showcases Aretha's strongest singing ever. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!! 1, 2.

Forrest Richard "Dickey" Betts is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter, most known for his work as a founding member, with Duane Allman, of the southern blues/rock group The Allman Brothers Band. Dickey Betts was ranked #58 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest guitarists list in 2003. It doesn’t matter with which side of the Allman Brothers Band debate a person happens to side. The fact remains: After more than thirty years with the group, Dickey Betts was fired by fax. Sad to say, but familial feuds are often the worst kind imaginable. Nevertheless, Betts has returned — albeit it with a new band in tow — and his latest release Let’s Get Together is a solid, if not magnificent, effort that salvages what could have been a rather precipitous downfall. Not surprisingly, Let’s Get Together never strays far from the familiar Allman Brothers sound, running the gamut of what one might expect as it mixes powerhouse instrumental jams (Rave On) with gritty blues numbers (Here Come the Blues Again). This makes the endeavor all the easier to digest for Betts as well as his fans, but it’s also part of the problem. It often mimics and emulates that which has come before it, making it nearly impossible not to compare it to the many classic releases by the Allman Brothers Band — albums which are far better. 1, 2.

Trial By Fire: Greatest and Latest is a compilation album by Bachman-Turner Overdrive. It contains new studio-recordings of old material, four new original recordings and one new cover song. It is the last album that any form of BTO has produced with new material. It was not released on a large scale in the United States and is a hard to find album. And just as the past three Bachman-Turner Overdrive albums, it failed to break any charts nationally or internationally. The song "House Of The Rising Sun" on this album came about originally because BTO played at a concert for a biker gang with The Animals. The Animals failed to play their smash hit "House Of The Rising Sun," so BTO was told they had better play "House Of The Rising Sun." Since then it became a concert favorite at BTO concerts. - wiki 1, 2.

"Abracadabra" is a well-recognized song recorded by the Steve Miller Band. Released as the main single from Abracadabra in June 1982, it became a number-one hit on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart, and also hit number two on the UK charts. It followed Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" (from Rocky III) on the Hot 100, and preceded Chicago's "Hard to Say I'm Sorry". After Chicago's ballad ended its two-week stay at number one, "Abracadabra" re-assumed the top spot on the U.S. charts for an additional week on September 25. John Cougar's "Jack and Diane" dislodged the Steve Miller Band's final number-one hit from the top on October 2. This song holds the record for the biggest drop out of the Top 10/Top 40 on the Hot 100. In the fall of 1982, as the song was moving down the chart, "Abracadabra" fell 38 spots from #10 to #48 in one week. The song is listed at #70 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of all time. - wiki *

"The Lonesome Jubilee" is the ninth album by John Mellencamp, released in 1987 on the Mercury Records label. It has considerable country and folk music influences, including the use of steel guitar, violins, accordion and hammond organ. It contained a number of hit singles, including "Paper in Fire" (Mainstream Rock #1, Hot 100 #9) and "Cherry Bomb" (Mainstream Rock #1, Hot 100 #8). John Mellencamp's fascination with the American heartland came into full flower on Scarecrow, but with its follow-up, The Lonesome Jubilee, he began exploring American folk musics, adding fiddle, accordions, and acoustic guitars to his band, which allowed him to explore folk and country. The expansion of his band coincided with his continuing growth as a songwriter. Song for song, The Lonesome Jubilee is Mellencamp's strongest album, the record where he captured his romantic, if decidedly melancholy, vision of working-class America. He may recycle the same lyrical ideas as before, but he captures them better than ever, and his music is richer, which gives the album resonance. Again, there are a few moments where Mellencamp's reach exceeds his grasp, but "Paper in Fire," "Check It Out," "Cherry Bomb," "Empty Hands," and "Hard Times for an Honest Man" make the record his best. *

J.J. CALE
Self-described "semiretired," reclusive singer/songwriter J.J. Cale's songs have been covered by artists ranging from Johnny Cash to Captain Beefheart. But his trademark sinuous, bluesy guitar lines and mumbly, near-whispered vocals have been popularized by Dire Straits and Eric Clapton; the latter's versions of "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" have become radio hits. Cale took up the guitar at age 10. After playing in a succession of Tulsa, Oklahoma, bands (one group included Leon Russell) during high school, he went on the road in 1959 and played in the Grand Ole Opry road company. By the early ’60s, he was back in Tulsa playing with Russell, and in 1964 the two moved to L.A. with fellow Oklahoma native Carl Radle (later of Derek and the Dominos). Cale hooked up with Delaney and Bonnie, and by 1965 he was recording on his own, including the first release of “After Midnight.” He left Delaney and Bonnie and in 1967 returned to Tulsa. Radle passed on some of Cale's homemade demo tapes to Denny Cordell, and Cale became one of the first signings of Cordell and Russell’s Shelter Records in 1969. Following Clapton’s 1970 success with “After Midnight” (#18), Cale recorded Naturally in 1972, from which “Crazy Mama” went to #22. “Magnolia,” also on that album, was later covered by Poco and José Feliciano. Throughout the ’70s, Cale recorded and toured at a leisurely pace. Cale moved to Mercury Records in 1982, releasing two albums, Grasshopper (#149, 1982) and #8 (1983). Disappointed by their sales, he asked to be released from his contract. He spent the next six years living in a mobile home outside L.A., emerging only for an annual tour. Cale released two albums on Silvertone, a U.K.-based independent label, Travelog (#131, 1990) and Number 10 (1992). He also produced John Hammond’s Got Love If You Want It (1992) and Trouble No More (1994). Closer to You (1994) and Guitar Man (1996) continued Cale’s trademark laid-back bluesy songwriting. - from The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll (Simon & Schuster, 2001)

Because it was released in 1995, THE BEST OF CHRIS REA naturally doesn't include material from Rea's fine late-'90s albums. It does, however, provide an excellent overview of the singer-songwriter's late-'80s and early-'90s work. The set kicks off with the moody "Road to Hell" from Rea's album of the same name, and includes highlights like "On the Beach," with its shuffling, exotic groove, and the new-wave jump blues of "Auberge." Rea's smooth, blues-drenched tunes are easy on the ears, but their polished surfaces shouldn't obscure the singer's meticulous craftsmanship, or the dark, sometimes ominous atmospherics that circulate throughout. Rea's stinging yet understated guitar playing is also not to be overlooked. Although his studio albums (ON THE BEACH and ROAD TO HELL, in particular) are worth seeking out, THE BEST OF CHRIS REA serves as a fine introduction to this talented and eminently listenable artist. - CDuniverse 1, 2.

BIRTHA
Birtha was one of the leading female rock bands performing during the early 1970's. The band consisted of four women: Shele Pinizzotto ( guitar), Rosemary Butler (bass), Sherry Hagler (keyboards) and Liver Favela (drums). All four members of the group performed lead vocals and harmonies. Liver was the last member to join Birtha in 1968. The group immediately started playing the club circuit and toured from California to Alaska. From 1968 to 1971 Birtha worked to tighten and refine their rock sound and in 1971 they started writing their own material. Most of the material was written by Birtha, but there were a few songs which were written in partnership with other parties including, Mark Wickman and Gabriel Mckler. Birtha signed a record contract with Dunhill Records in 1972 and recorded their first album, "Birtha" with record producer Gabriel Mckler and Engineers, David Hassinger and Val Caray. After the release of their first album, Birtha began playing rock concerts and clubs throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. While taking breaks in their home town, Los Angeles, they would often play The Whiskey and The Troubadour and frequently played a club in Glendale, CA. In 1973 Birtha recorded their second album, "Can't Stop The Madness" with producer and engineer Christopher Huston. The band was on the road for more than 250 days a year and played with groups like, Fleetwood Mac, Alice Cooper, Poco, Black Oak Arkansas, Cheech and Chong, The Kinks, B.B. King, Three Dog Night, James Gang and many more.

ROGER DALTREY - One Of The Boys (1977)
Roger Daltrey's biggest problem as a solo artist has been his inability to relate his own records to those he makes with the Who. His first two albums were self-conscious attempts to break down his Who identity for a solo persona. The result, especially on "Ride a Rock Horse", was that Daltrey sounded uncomfortable, a stranger at his own session.
"One of the Boys" is a dramatic reversal. Perhaps because it's been so long between Who albums, Daltrey comes on with all the assurance and some of the fire that he can summon up as part of the Who. Even though he still seems to be groping for an identity in his choice of material, there's no question that he's becoming more comfortable with his own records. 1, 2.

An all-star band comprised of guitarist Jimmie Vaughan, singer and harp player Kim Wilson, bassist Preston Hubbard, and drummer Fran Christina they would begin paving the way for more Texas blues bands to follow. This album covers five years of music, covering four studio releases. *

JETHRO TULL - Original Masters (1985)
Original Masters is a greatest hits album by Jethro Tull released under Chrysalis Records in 1985. It was the band's third such effort, the first two being M.U. - The Best of Jethro Tull and Repeat - The Best of Jethro Tull - Vol II. Although the compilation was released in 1985, it does not include material released after 1977. It is worth noting that the first two compilations had already covered material released exclusively up to 1977 and Original Masters rehashes much of their material. However, Original Masters has different takes of many songs than those commonly heard. This is because most of the songs used on this compilation are seven-inch promo versions, given only to radio stations -- these will often contain slightly different mixes, vocal takes, etc. This is immediately apparent upon comparing the vocals in this album's rendition of "Aqualung" with the vocals on the Aqualung album itself. - wiki

RUBY STARR & GREY GHOST - Ruby Starr & Grey Ghost (1975)

03. Witchin' Hour
04. Did It Again
05. Everything Coming And Goes
06. Long Wait
07. You Need A Chain
08. Fork In The Road
09. Living Proof
Ruby Starr recorded 3 albums for Capitol in the 70's, and this 1st album from 1975 is the strongest of them. Ruby's tough yet tender vocals , plus the contributions of her band, Grey Ghost in both the playing & songwriting, make this a killer album from start to finish. Ruby's voice is the main attraction. A tough chick who could sing as great as the best of them, but yet never got the recognition or the hits she deserved during her time on earth. BURNIN' WHISKEY is the opener, and Ruby's acapella opening lines make you know this girl could sing. SWEET SWEET SWEET is a very catchy song with a great chorus that should have been THE hit single from this album. Instantly memorable. The whole band ably assist Ruby backing her up with some great solos, as well as providing some nice vocal harmonies. All the songs are original , penned by Ruby, keyboardist Marius Penczner, Jimmie Henderson & David Mayo. Whether you like Southern Rock or female rockers, Ruby Starr is not to be missed. The best of the bunch are on Side Two where both Ruby & the band let loose on more lengthy songs. FORK IN THE ROAD is a bluesy showcase that is a centerpiece here. And LIVING PROOF is a Southern Rock jam that doesn't stop, with many different twists & turns. A mighty closer to this album . There's no lack of fire on this album.
Ruby definitely paved the way in the 70's , but unlike say, Ann Wilson or Stevie Nicks, she didn't become a major star. She was years ahead of The Rossington-Collins Band , who had the very similar sounding Dale Krantz on lead vocals, who definitely owes a debt to Ruby Starr. Or another Dale, Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons, whose sensual stage personality was very similar to Ruby's . Perhaps it was the time, when radio was just not playing a ballsy female vocalist like Ruby Starr [ or Genya Ravan or Maggie Bell or any other solo woman performer , except Janis Joplin who rocked ]. Ruby did get some publicity with her guest starring on the hit JIM DANDY with Black Oak Arkansas, but it's her 3 solo albums on Capitol that are her real legacy. She deservered more than the cult following she has now in death. Don't wait for a CD release. Own the vinyl, and don't miss out on one of rock's best female rockers, known to many decades later. - amazon.com *

She championed the work of Bob Dylan, her choice of material gradually moving away from traditional folk towards more politically aware work. Baez recorded for Vanguard for 12 years from 1960 until 1972. This compilation includes all her hits, both British and American, from that period, with copious notes giving a detailed overview of her career, along with many photos and memorabilia. *

NANCI GRIFFITH - Other Voices, Other Rooms (1993)
During the '80s, Texas singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith graduated from modest folk celebrity to find herself signed to a major label and making thoughtful, better-heeled studio albums that were critical favorites but commercial anomalies in the country market where she was initially positioned. This 1993 project finds her returning to her roots, reunited with the producer behind his earlier folk triumphs, Jim Rooney. Taking its title from Truman Capote's first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms is a gentle but whip-smart anthology of excellent songs from acknowledged masters (Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Woody Guthrie, the Carter Family, the Weavers, Gordon Lightfoot) and lesser-known but hardly less-skilled writers including Kate Wolf, Frank Christian, and Vince Bell. Griffith's clear-eyed vocals and unswerving intelligence are well served by members of her own band, augmented by vocal cameos from a roomful of fellow folk veterans including Prine, Arlo Guthrie, the Indigo Girls, and John Gorka, among others. 1, 2.
Griffith won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album for Other Voices, Other Rooms.

Nanci Griffith is an American singer, guitarist and songwriter from Austin, Texas. Griffith's career has spanned a variety of musical genres, predominantly country, Folk, and what she terms "folkabilly." Griffith won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1994 for her recording, "Other Voices, Other Rooms".
On BLUE ROSES FROM THE MOONS, Griffith covers Nick Lowe and Guy Clark, re-visits some of her own best-loved songs, adds a potpourri of new ones, duets with Hootie, and brings in Buddy Holly's old band, the Crickets, to join her own Blue Moon Orchestra on several tracks. Griffith dedicates the album to the Blue Moon Orchestra, with whom she has been playing for a decade, and the whole thing serves as a kind of retrospective of what she and they have been up to all that time. 1, 2.

Canned Heat - the most under-rated rock band of the psychedelic era. With its driving boogie blues tempos, rhythms, vocals and instrumentations, this band deserves its due in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Canned Heat was started as a jug band in November 1965, in Northridge, California by a group of "musicologists" who loved blues music. Soon the band evolved into an electrified blues/rock band with the uncanny ability to interpret and create a modern version of the blues. While they never reached the popular acclaim of some of the other bands of the psychedelic era, none the less, they were a talented group of musicians who created some of the most unique music of that or any rock and roll era. Musical trends come and go. Canned Heat's "boogie music" has been at the forefront of popularizing blues music, as exemplified by such hits as "On The Road Again", "Goin' Up The Country", "Let's Work Together" and "Amphetamine Annie". 1, 2.

JOHN MAYALL & FRIENDS - Along For The Ride (2001)
Guest artists include: Jeff Healey, Billy Peterson, Billy F. Gibbsons, Johnny Lang, Peter Green, Garry Moore, Shannon Curfman, Chris Rea, Andy Fairweather, Otis Rush, Billy Preston, Red Holloway, and Mick Taylor.
TRACKS: 01. A World Of Hurt 02. Along For The Ride 03. Put It Right Back 04. That's Why I Love You So 05. Yo Yo Man 06. If I Don't Get Home 07. Testify 08. Early In The Morning 09. Something About My Baby 10. So Many Roads 11. World War Blues 12. California 13. She Don't Play By The Rules
By the time this was released in 2001, John Mayall was more known for the people who played in his seminal British band, the Bluesbreakers rather than his own accomplishments. The success of 1999's Padlock on the Blues afforded Mayall the opportunity to fulfill his dreams and gather an all-star lineup of blues and rock luminaries. "A World of Hurt" and "That's Why I Love You So" both typify the good but not great groove that permeates Along for the Ride. Better tracks "Yo Yo Man" and "Early in the Morning" are easygoing blues that feature the great rhythm section of John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. Fellow Fleetwood Mac and Bluesbreaker alum, the reclusive Peter Green plays acoustic slide guitar on "Yo-Yo Man." "So Many Roads" has Mayall dueting with Otis Rush, and it soon becomes a contest on who sounds more disgruntled. The playful "Testify" features vocals and subtle guitar lines from blues phenom Shannon Curfman. This ends on the strong note. The powerful and wry "She Don't Play By the Rules" has Mayall with arguably the strongest and most subtle band with Mick Taylor on lead guitar and Andy Fairweather Low on acoustic guitar. Along for the Ride is produced, engineered, and mixed by David Z. Despite the camaraderie, a lot of the hooks here don't stick, and fans of Mayall and superstar sessions will get the most from this effort. ~ Jason Elias, All Music Guide 1, 2.

While working on and touring in support of The Black Keys’ most recent album, Attack & Release, Auerbach also was writing songs that would become Keep It Hid. "This record is a mixture of things I like to listen to, psychedelia, soul music, country harmonies," says Auerbach. In February Auerbach will begin a national tour with performances in New York City, Boston, and Washington, DC. Opening acts for the tour will include Those Darlins and Hacienda—the latter also lending support as Auerbach’s backing band.
Keep It Hid was produced and engineered by Auerbach at his studio, Akron Analog, and features him playing a variety of instruments, including drums, guitar, percussion, and keyboards. Many of Auerbach’s friends and family play on the album, including his uncle James Quine, who contributes vocal harmony and electric guitar on the track "Street Walkin." Other musicians include fellow Ohioans Jessica Lea Mayfield, who sings on the track "When the Night Comes," and Bob Cesare, who plays drums on "Whispered Words," a song originally written by Auerbach’s father. Of the recording process Auerbach states, "I wanted a live, organic sound. Nothing was too plotted or planned, just a lot of spontaneity." The record was mixed by Auerbach’s good friend Mark Neill at Neill’s Soil of the South studio. *

The original Skid Row was the blueprint for guitarist Gary Moore's long and varied career. Moore was just shy of 18 years old when this album was released in 1971, but you wouldn't know it by listening to his incredible guitar playing; in spite of his youth, his playing is skillful and mature. The band is rounded out by bassist "Brush" Shields and drummer Noel Bridgeman, who along with Moore, are a tight and cohesive power trio. Along with their rival band in Ireland, Taste (featuring an equally young Rory Gallagher on guitar), Skid Row is not the least bit afraid to let loose and jam, and they do so frequently throughout this album. But unlike most jam bands, there's one major exception with Skid Row: they hold your attention and don't bore you. Some interesting tidbits about the album: the track "Mar" features (according to the liner notes) "the studio receptionist's boyfriend" on bass, and the title "34 Hours" was the exact amount of time the band spent in the studio recording the album. Taking into consideration the complexity of some of the material with their odd time signatures and dynamics, this is a pretty astounding achievement! As you might expect, Gary Moore's guitar playing is the focus here, and his already immense talents are very much on display. Very impressive work for someone so young! - amazon.com *

Originally released in 1958 by the budget-priced Crown label, The Blues collected a dozen sides B.B. King cut for RPM and Kent between 1951 and 1958. (RPM and Kent were owned by the Bahari Brothers who also ran Crown, which explains how one of the true prestige artists of the blues ended up on such a notoriously cheap-o label.) As was often the case with Crown's product, The Blues used a single hit tune (in this case "When My Heart Beats Like a Hammer," a Top Ten R&B chart entry in 1954) to help sell a package of lesser-known material, but thankfully the label also picked some great tunes that hardly sound like filler, even if they didn't make the charts. The material on The Blues is dominated by muscular, horn-driven performances with King's interjections of single-note riffs and powerful string bends punctuating the arrangements, and King's songwriting was already stellar, with "I Want to Get Married," "Don't You Want a Man Like Me," and "Ruby Lee" demonstrating his way with a melody and a lyrical conceit. While King's recordings gained a greater depth and emotional force as he moved into the 1960s, his RPM takes were the work of a man who already had an enviable command of his instrument and a real gift as a vocalist and songwriter, and though he would get better with time, The Blues demonstrates he was already near the top of his class. Ace's 2005 CD reissue of The Blues adds an additional six rare and unheard takes to the package. ~ All Music Guide *

Bruce Springsteen’s new album, "Working On A Dream", was recorded with the E Street Band and features twelve new Springsteen compositions plus a bonus track. It is the fourth collaboration between Springsteen and Brendan O’Brien, who produced and mixed the album. Bruce Springsteen said, “Towards the end of recording Magic, excited by the return to pop production sounds, I continued writing. When my friend producer Brendan O’Brien heard the new songs, he said, ‘Let’s keep going.’ Over the course of the next year, that’s just what we did, recording with the E Street Band during the breaks on last year’s tour. I hope Working On A Dream has caught the energy of the band fresh off the road from some of the most exciting shows we’ve ever done. All the songs were written quickly, we usually used one of our first few takes, and we all had a blast making this one from beginning to end.” 1, 2.

The remainder features rehearsal recordings in mid-1974 for Walls and Bridges. The title refers to Lennon's childhood home, 251 Menlove Avenue, in Liverpool. Menlove Avenue is a long road in South Liverpool, part of the Liverpool ring road. While it is mainly residential, it is also a primary route - the A562. "I am very proud of this album and if it is my last one then it’s a good one to leave on!" says Fish. Recorded at Fish's house in East Lothian, it is an album that is bound to delight his fans and surprise others. Strongly Blues influenced (especially Zoo Class) with a beautiful ballad (Shot the Craw), the raw rock sound is punchy and anthemic, with tracks like Old Crow begging to be played live. 1, 2.

One of the most significant figures of the mid-1960s blues boom, Albert King was overshadowed in the public eye by his namesake B.B. King for much of his career, though of the two musicians Albert's guitar style was the more fluid. This timely Stax retrospective is a concise overview of some of the guitarist's most significant tracks, including his first hit single, "Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong," the elemental blues song "Born Under a Bad Sign," later covered by Cream, and the guitar tour de force of "I'll Play the Blues for You." 1, 2.
Personnel: Albert King (vocals, guitar); Jesse Ed Davis, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bobby Manuel (guitar); Donald "Duck" Dunn, Earl Thomas (bass guitar); Jim Keltner, Al Jackson (drums).

SWEET - Sweet Originals: The Best 37 Glamrock Songs Ever (1998)
The title sets itself up for one hell of a fall, and the ongoing need for a decent Sweet box set is never going to be assuaged by this. But it is what it says on the tin, a 37-strong collection that, OK, they're not all the "Best Glam Rock Songs Ever," but maybe a dozen of them are, and the remainder should at least be invited to the awards ceremony. A dizzying spin through the band's entire RCA catalog, a mass of A-sides, B-sides, album cuts and what-on-earth-were-they-thinking cuts jostle for your attention. Slide, if you will, from the sophisticated stylings of "Love Is Like Oxygen," into the arms of the band's execrable cover of "Paperback Writer." Cringe through their version of "Tom Tom Turnaround" (at least New World sounded like they cared when they sang it), then leap into the tempestuous grip of "Wig Wam Bam." No chronology is at play here, nor any sense that the songs were programmed for seamless continuity. Rather, it's just wigwam-bam-thank-you-ma'am from start to finish, and you stagger out at the end wondering precisely how many different bands Sweet thought they were. The answer is, of course, as many as they thought they could get away with. So, if you like your metal laced with bubblegum, and your classic hits smeared with anodyne covers, Sweet Originals is the box for you. But it's not the box that it ought to be. ~ All Music Guide 1, 2, 3, 4.

THIN LIZZY - Vagabonds Kings Warriors Angels (2001)

Originally the box set was a chance for the fan to collect some rare recordings, demos and the obscure oddities from their favorite bands. Only a few bands with a healthy legacy of music were allowed the luxury of the Box Set. Their purpose should be to chronicle the history of an act/artist in a more inclusive and important way that the restraints of a greatest hits, best off album never could. In fact many bands, rock bands mainly, have produced material on albums that can be more superior to their hit singles to the surprize of many. The rock album in the seventies became a cohesive set of tracks and over took the advent of the single as the most important facet of many acts or artists. Through the years, late sixties onward, single sales dwindled as the sales of albums constantly grew and overtook the single by a large majority proving a massive financial reward for both band/artist and record label. Up to this point the album served as a vehicle to collect filler as the 60s beat generation threw out singles hits. The box set came along as an expensive limited collection of artifacts for the must have completist. Now they too have become commonplace, and as things become commonplace complacency can set in. There is now a culture to pack Box Set albums mainly with an artists recorded output and previous heard music with little foresight or imagination toward the unheard items that lurk in the vaults of record companies and studios. The Thin Lizzy Box Set is such a collection. Though there may well be the oddity or two thrown in to keep the listener on his/her toes the bulk of the material on offer on Vagabonds Kings Warriors Angels is nothing if not a wide retrospective, an anthology of previous released Thin Lizzy recordings. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

Donna Greene is that rare singer who can tear open a song with intelligence, passion and humor until she owns it completely. She brings her huge heart, voice and style to her eclectic repertoire of feisty blues, smokey jazz and down and dirty R&B. She came out of nowhere, looking like she just stepped off a train in 1940, walked into a bar and started singing the blues. Her amazing voice goes from a sultry whisper to a sizzling howl of pain. She has a vintage flair that immediately recalls the glamour of the 1940’s and draws her audiences in with her sexy roadhouse style. She gets things rocking. Lady Blue has been compared to a wide range of vocalists... Billie Holiday to Dinah Washington, Peggy Lee to Etta James to Eva Cassidy to Bonnie Raitt...but her style is her own and her voice is unlike anyone else’s. She takes classic songs you may have heard a million times and shows you something about them that makes you realize that, until then, you hadn’t really “heard” them. Ms. Greene has been lauded in both the jazz and blues scenes for her sensuous personality and roadhouse energy that pulls the audience in and keeps them wanting more. Joining her on stage are the Roadhouse Daddies led by Greg ‘Snoots Noodlemyer’ Loeb, whose bio is a mile long. He’s traveled the world and played with some amazing and well-known musicians. Snoots and Lady Blue are joined by some of the top veterans in the music world. *

MARILLION - Happiness Is The Road (2008)
Marillion is a British progressive rock band who are best known in America for the music they made more than twenty years ago. Back in the eighties, led by a lanky lead vocalist called Fish, Marillion was primarily known for its theatrical stage performances where Fish often dressed in a variety of costumes. Because of this, as well as the long prog-rock pieces found on albums like Script For A Jesters Tear and Misplaced Childhood (which yielded their only American hit single in “Kayleigh”), the band was widely regarded – and some would say dismissed – as a pale imitation of Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. When Fish left the band to pursue a solo career, the band were soon forgotten…At least in America, they were. Not so however, in much of the rest of the world.
"Happiness Is the Road" is Marillion's 15th studio album, released as two separate album-length volumes respectively entitled "Essence" and "The Hard Shoulder". 1, 2, 3.

V.A. - Wintertime Blues - The Benefit Concert (2000)
The 1999 11th Annual Warren Haynes benefit concert for Habitat for Humanity offers something for everyone. Disc One opens with soul-filled acoustics by Edwin McCain and Warren Hayes. They are followed by a rolling blues jam hosted by Derek Trucks. Derek Trucks leads with "Rastaman Chant" -- a bow to Reggae that keeps you bouncing. Trucks then lays a solid foundation with the jazzy Chicken Strut for a five-song set that closes out the first disc. The set features guest after guest pushing each other to new heights. Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce Hampton, Susan Tedeschi, and Larry McCray mix and match as song after song delivers first rate blues. Larry McCray sizzles on "Ain't That Loving You" and Col. Bruce Hampton will have you kneeling at the altar of the blues with his "Yield Not to Temptation". Tucks closes Disc One with Tedeschi's "Just Won't Burn". Tedeschi opens the second disc with a version of "Angel from Montgomery" that rivals Bonnie's rendition. Cry of Love returns after a five-year absence to rock the concert. On "Piece Pipe" they beat out a powerful song that resurrects the spirit of the 60s. Government Mule then does for Disc Two what Tucks did for Disc One - they host a rolling jam featuring Johnny Neal, Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce Hampton, Mike Barnes, and Little Milton. Jimmy Neal rips out one great line after another on "Falling Down". Hampton, Neal and Mike Barnes have some fun with Willie Dixon's "Spoonful". The second disc closes with Little Milton reaching new heights on "When the Blues Come Knockin'" followed by Government Mule, Derek Trucks, Little Milton, Johnny Neal and Little Milton in an unforgettable version of "Merry Christmas Baby".
This is a solid two CD set for the serious Blues-Rock fan who appreciates live music and artists who love to jam. - amazon.com 1, 2, 3, 4.

BUDGIE - You're All Living In Cuckooland (2006)
"You're All Living In Cuckooland" is Budgie's eleventh album. Released in November 2006, it is their first official studio album in over 20 years.
01. Justice
02. Dead Men Don't Talk
03. We're All Living In Cuckooland
04. Falling
05. Love Is Enough

07. (Don't Want To) Find That Girl
08. Captain
09. I Don't Want To Throw You
10. I'm Compressing The Comb On A Cockerel's Head
Apart from sporadic live appearances (mostly in Europe), little was heard from U.K. Sabbath worshipers, Budgie, since their last studio album, 1982's Deliver Us from Evil. But as any well-versed metalhead knows by now, the group received a major profile boost when Metallica covered a few of their songs over the years. Suddenly, a whole new generation of headbangers took notice. While it would have made more sense for the group to have issued a follow-up to Evil during the late '80s (when Metallica was going "Budgie cover happy"), 2006 finally saw the release of an all-new Budgie studio set, You're All Living in Cuckooland. Singer/bassist Burke Shelley is the lone original bandmember left in attendance by this point, and while his unmistakable singing style and the group's trademark mega-heavy riffs remain, rather odd production techniques abound. It's as if the group attempted to updated their sound for the times, but the "times" that it reflects are the late '80s, especially on such tracks as the album-opening "Justice" and "Dead Men Don't Talk." However, there are some classic Budgie moments, such as the quiet-loud-quiet "Tell Me Tell Me," which harkens back to such early Budgie gems as "Everything in My Heart" and "Rolling Home Again." Despite the detectable Van Halen/Iron Maiden-esque sounds, You're All Living in Cuckooland is worthy of any longtime Budgie fan's time. ~ All Music Guide *

CROSBY & NASH - Graham Nash / David Crosby (1972)
01. Southbound Train
02. Whole Cloth
03. Blacknotes
04. Strangers Room
05. Where Will I Be?
06. Page 43
07. Frozen Smiles
08. Games
09. Girl to Be on My Mind
10. The Wall Song
11. Immigration Man
After the breakup of Crosby Stills & Nash (the first go ‘round anyway), David Crosby and Graham Nash released successful solo albums and next elected to combine their talents on this eponymous album. The decision paid off as Graham Nash/David Crosby nearly topped the US charts and climbed comfortably into the UK Top 20, generating two singles including the Top 40 “Immigration Man.” As opposed to a true collaboration, this album alternates tracks by Nash and Crosby, thus representing a continuation of their solo careers rather than an attempt at a “CS&N lite” sound. What happens as a result is a striation of styles, alternating between Graham’s gilded country pop and David’s sere, airy songs. With better material this could have been the best parts of both artists distilled. As it stands, this record is a good amalgam of their unique songwriting, not likely to quell the call for a CS&N reunion but better than the solo albums that followed. Crosby’s tracks tend to blow across like tumbleweeds, bluesy and folksy and cloudlike, shifting slowly to elusive melodies while Crosby’s voice stays fixated like a sun. Of his contributions, “The Wall Song” (featuring Jerry Garcia’s distinctive lead guitar) and “Page 43” are the more substantial tracks, the miniature “Where Will I Be?” the most intriguing. Graham’s songs tend to work better as standalone tracks, grounded where David’s songs float away. “Southbound Train” is remarkably effective, sesting elements of Nashville Skyline-era Dylan due to the mix of pedal steel (again courtesy of Garcia) and the songwriter’s own harmonica playing. “Strangers Room” and “Frozen Smiles” are also pleasant tracks, arguably better choices for the single than “Immigration Man,” which likely won out because of its CS&N-like harmonies. While the merger may have been financially motivated at first, Graham Nash/David Crosby remains one of the most gratifying extracurricular outings from the CS&N axis, a snapshot of two artists still at their peak. *

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - Live At Ludlow Garage 1970 (1990)
Recorded live at Ludlow Garage, Cincinnati, Ohio on April 11, 1970.
DISC 1:
01. Dreams
02. Statesboro Blues
03. Trouble No More
04. Dimples
05. Every Hungry Woman
06. I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town
07. Hoochie Coochie Man
DISC 2:
01. Mountain Jam
This two-CD set won't cause you to throw out your copy of Fillmore East, but it is at very least a worthy companion to that 1971 classic. Recorded the previous year at the famed Cincinnati venue (but not released until 1991), Ludlow catches the band in the moments just before their peak. Some of the material will be familiar to fans, but this collection adds gems such as John Lee Hooker's "Dimples" and the blues classic "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town" to their recorded repertoire. And if you thought the 33-minute "Mountain Jam" on Eat a Peach was extensive, you need to hear Ludlow's 44-minute version, which comprises the entire second CD. Recorded a year before their legendary Fillmore shows, this documents the Brothers' stand at a Cincinnati psychedelic ballroom of the period, ("We're going to have some electric wine," Gregg Allman comments at the end of the first set), and it's very much Gregg and Duane Allman's show. At this point, second guitarist Dickie Betts played mostly rhythm, sang hardly at all, and had yet to provide the country influence on their sound that would culminate in the signature "Rambling Man." The Allmans heard here are (merely) a brilliant blues band; if you need proof, check out their world-class version of "Hootchie Cootchie Man." As for the rest, Duane's slide guitar is as fiery and otherworldly as you'd expect throughout, and Gregg' vocals are both impassioned and subtle. 1, 2, 3.

"The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw" is a 1967 album by The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Its name refers to Elvin Bishop, whose role shifted to lead guitarist after Mike Bloomfield departed to form Electric Flag. The album marked a slight shift in the band's sound towards R&B and features a horn section. The Butterfield Blues Band sparked a firestorm of blues activity by young white kids all around the world. 1967's The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw, Butterfield's third album, saw Elvin Bishop (A.K.A. Pigboy Crabshaw) replace Mike Bloomfield on sizzling lead guitar and ride point for a combo now boasting a wailing horn section led by multi-saxist David Sanborn. *

CLARENCE GATEMOUTH BROWN - Real Life (1987)
Recorded at Caravan Of Dreams, Fort Worth, Texas from September 4-7, 1985.
01. Real Life
02. Okie Dokie Stomp
03. Frankie And Johnny
04. Next Time You See Me
05. Take The A Train
06. Please Send Me Someone To Love
07. Catfish
08. St. Louis Blues
09. What A Shame, What A Shame
Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown has been stretching the definition of blues since the late 1940s, when his seminal Peacock recordings first hinted at his category-defying blend of swing, R&B, jazz, and countrified twang. 1987's REAL LIFE serves up the Texas master's pan-roots aesthetic with sophistication, soul, and panache. Recorded live, REAL LIFE offers studio quality sound and polish, with all the improvisatory glee and spontaneous energy of a concert performance. On cuts such as the Peacock favorite "Okie Dokie Stomp" and the finger-popping jump blues title track, Brown demonstrates that his fretboard-melting fingers are still in excellent shape. On "Catfish," he breaks out his violin for a string of inventive solos, proving the instrument (in the right hands, of course) as capable of soulful, bluesy wailing as any. Like most of his '80s and '90s recordings, the personnel here includes an R&B big band, complete with a fat, sassy horn section that provides hard-swinging muscle on favorites such as "Take The A Train" and a funky, gear-shifting "St. Louis Blues." The combination of the band's slick, punchy sound and Brown's dazzling axe-work and throaty, down-home vocals adds up to a thoroughly satisfying dose of real American roots music. - CDUniverse *

TOMMY BOLIN - Teaser (1975)
01. The Grind
02. Homeward Strut
03. Dreamer
04. Savannah Woman
05. Teaser
06. People, People
07. Marching Powder
08. Wild Dogs
09. Lotus
After performing in a variety of bands since the late '60s, Bolin finally released his first solo album in 1975. "Teaser" is an impressive display of the guitarist's prowess & range, & is a natural progression from the previous Bolin-dominated James Gang albums Bang & Miami & his work with drummer Billy Cobham. The album features heavy doses of jazz-rock fusion (furthered by guests Jan Hammer, Dave Sanborn, & Michael Walden) in the instrumentals 'Homeward Strut' & 'Marching Powder', & straight-ahead rock in tracks like 'The Grind'. Bolin was always equally adept at subtleties, & the ballad 'Dreamer' & the exotic 'Savannah Woman' (with percussion from Phil Collins) represent this stylistic range here. Overshadowed historically by his guitar dynamics, Bolin's understated yet strong vocals are another selling point. Teaser is a stronger album than its one successor, the uneven Private Eyes, & survives as Bolin's signature work Sony/Japan. - CDUniverse *
