BOOKER T. & THE MG's - The Definitive Soul Collection (2006)

Booker T. & the M.G.'s are an instrumental soul band popular in the 1960s and 1970s. They are most commonly associated with Stax Records and are often placed in the subgenre of Memphis soul. They were also one of the first racially-integrated bands in popular music. They are probably best known for their 1962 hit instrumental "Green Onions" and for being members of the house band for many Stax/Volt performers. As originators of the unique Stax sound, the group was one of the most prolific, respected, and imitated of their era. By the mid-1960s, bands on both sides of the Atlantic were trying to sound like Booker T. & the MG's.

Part of Rhino's thorough DEFINITIVE SOUL series of single-artist R&B anthologies, this is a 30-track retrospective covering the entire career of one of soul music's most important instrumental acts, Booker T. and the MG's. From their smash hit "Green Onions" through beloved fan favorites like "Jellybread" and "Hip Hug-Her," the combination of organist Booker T. Jones, guitarist Steve Cropper, bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, and drummer Al Jackson, Jr., defined 1960s soul in general and the sound of Stax Records in particular. 1, 2.

EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER - The Very Best Of Emerson, Lake & Palmer (2000)

Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP) were an English progressive rock supergroup. In the 1970s, the band was extremely popular, selling over 35 million albums and headlining huge concerts. The band consisted of Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (guitar, bass guitar, vocals) and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). Onstage, the band exhibited an unorthodox mix of virtuoso musicianship and over-the-top theatrical bombast. Their extravagant and often aggressive live shows received much criticism in this regard – although in retrospect it was all rather small change compared to later rock spectacles: the theatrics were limited to a Persian carpet, a grand piano spinning end-over-end, a rotating percussion platform, and a Hammond organ being thrown around on stage to create feedback. Emerson often used a knife given to him by Lemmy (who had roadied for Emerson's previous band, The Nice) to force the keys on the organ to stay down. Another unusual factor was that Emerson took a full Moog modular synthesizer (an enormous, complex, and unpredictable instrument under the best of conditions) on the road with him, which added greatly to a tour's complexity.

SAVOY BROWN - Boogie Brothers (1974)

TRACKS:
01. Highway Blues 02. Me And The Preacher 03. My Love's Lying Down 04. You Don't Love Me (You Don't Care) 05. Always The Same 06. Everybody Loves a Drinking Man 07. Rock & Roll Star 08. Boogie Brothers 09. Threegy Blues

This group has changed members more than any other group in recent history, with guitarist founder Kim Simmonds the only constant. Somehow, however, they continue to remain commercial yet sincere in their renditions of British blues. This time, with vocals shared between Stan Webb and Miller Anderson and the two also teaming with Simmonds on guitar, they have a fine combination. The three guitars work particularly well on Bo Diddley's "You Don't Love Me" and the group's "Rock 'N' Roll Star" and "Highway Blues." *

RYAN ADAMS & THE CARDINALS - Cardinology (2008)

Ryan Adams' drug problems and public tantrums have often overshadowed his music. But Cardinology may put an end to that. His first release in a year — notable for a guy who put out three (albeit spotty) full-lengths in 2005 — it's the record he has spent the past few years promising but never quite delivering. Drunk on melody, high on musical history, but all his own, the record throbs with great playing and singing, and thrums with hope without pimping easy platitudes. It's one of the best things he's ever done. Cardinology is a classic-rock record to the bone, nodding to influences that Adams has conjured before but never so well: the country rock of the Grateful Dead and Gram Parsons, the arena anthems of U2. It begins with four killers in a row: "Born Into a Light" prays for faith amid troubles over a Tex-Mex melody, weepy pedal steel and gospel-tinged vocals; "Go Easy" is a breathless love pledge with heartland-rock hooks; "Fix It" is a plea for psychic repair that meshes a slithery R&B groove with a soaring Bono-style chorus; and "Magick" is pure mindless garage-rock pleasure, notwithstanding the geopolitical apocalypse lurking in its lyrics ("You're like a missile strike/Government goes underground/Warhead on legs/What goes around comes around"). Then things settle down a bit — but despite overcooked nautical metaphors on "Sink Ships," they never slack. Cardinology's riveting finale is "Stop," a fragile piano ballad sung in a shaky voice that slowly gains strength and takes flight. It's clearly about rehab, and while rehab rock may be a bit of an oxymoron, Adams — who has reportedly cleaned up — defines a genre here. If it helps undermine some of the bogus junkie myths about hard drugs and creativity, all the better. - rollingstone.com *

RICK DANKO
- Times Like These (2000)

"Times Like These", released posthumously, is Rick Danko's last studio album. There's a tendency for fans to under-appreciate the singer/bassist's later work, opting instead for some sepia-toned memory of the Ontario farm boy amidst his original Band colleagues in the '60s and '70s, but that's only part of the story of a 40-year career. Later in life, Danko's voice, while remaining the distinctly mournful instrument of his youth, mellowed to equal parts milk and whiskey. Here, a less urgent and wiser artist wraps his pipes around his signature tune "This Wheel's on Fire," which is drawn out on both ends by elegant instrumental passages. This version of the song is a fitting coda to Danko's life, lingered over lovingly and masterfully by the Crowmatix with Band cohort Garth Hudson, a veritable one-man Fellini soundtrack on accordion. "Let the Four Winds Blow," a Fats Domino/Dave Bartholomew cover recorded live, showcases Levon Helm on harmonica and longtime Danko and Band associate Professor "Louie" on piano and vocals, rolling and stomping in the finest spirit of the Band. "All Our Past Times," a return to a song the artist co-wrote with Eric Clapton in 1976, is wistfully gorgeous and heart-wrenchingly appropriate. And a cover of The Grateful Dead's "Ripple", with Hudson and Helm once again making appearances is delivered with the rustic charm of a back porch session (albeit a highly skilled one). While the album can drip with sentimentality or sound too polished at times, ultimately Times Like These, co-produced by Danko and Professor "Louie" (aka Aaron Hurwitz), is a thoughtfully rendered reflection on a great musical life. ~ All Music Guide *

TRAFFIC - On The Road (1973)

Live On Tour in Germany, April, 1973.

TRACKS:
01. Glad / Freedom Rider 02. Tragic Magic 03. (Sometimes I Feel So) Uninspired 04. Shoot Out at Fantasy Factory 05. Light up or Leave Me Alone 06. Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys

The venality of the business gets a workout in the 12-minute title track, a slow-building jazz-rock groove that starts with a sense of quiet menace and ends with a pealing, distorted guitar solo, with one of Steve Winwood's most impassioned and lengthy organ solos at the song's heart. "Rock & Roll Stew" and Jim Capaldi's sneering putdown "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" are even more forceful, with only the groovy ecological message of "Many a Mile to Freedom" lightening the mood. Even that song rocks harder than anything on JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE, though, and that extra hint of power is likely what helped make THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS Traffic's most commercially successful album in the United States.

DR.JOHN - Creole Moon (2001)

On this 2001 set, the good voodoo doctor returns to his funked up 1970s New Orleans R&B sound. Most of these upbeat romps have a party vibe but "Imitation of Love," a downer to end the night with, is the crescent city jewel of the collection. Rhythm reigns supreme on Creole Moon, which cuts a sinuous, syncopated groove through the various styles that have informed the good Doctor's career. The bayou funk of "Bruha Bembe" recalls the juju mysteries of Dr. John's "Night Tripper" phase, the opening "You Swore" adheres to the hip-shaking tradition of "Right Place, Wrong Time" and the jazzier sophistication of "Holdin' Pattern", "Queen of Cold" and the title track show how far he has extended his musical terrain. Among the highlights are four songs co-written with the late Doc Pomus, including the soulful balladry of "Imitation of Love". Guitarist Sonny Landreth and fiddler Michael Doucet contribute Cajun seasoning to this musical gumbo, while saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman and trombonist Fred Wesley provide stellar brass support.

"Creole Moon" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. 1, 2.

HOWLIN' WOLF - The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions - Deluxe Edition (2002)

Wolf was 60 in 1970, and not in the best of health, but he came over to London to record with some of the British musicians who had picked up on his music and helped bring it to a wider audience over here. The sessions were not altogether happy ones to start with, as Eric Clapton strled at first playing with his hero (plus Hubert Sumlin and Jeffrey CArp who had come over with Wolf), but Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts began to pull it together bringing their "tightest rythym section in R&B" to the party. Clapton began to settle in with his part and Ian Stewart emerged from the fringe of the Stone to add piano. Ringo Starr (billed as Richie) appears on one track, and other luminaries include Klaus Voorman and John Simon amongst others. Steve Winwood added keyboards overdubs later.

This deluxe edition contains newly remixed bonus tracks from LONDON REVISTED, and previously unreleased remixes from the original session tapes. Recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, London, England in 1970. 1, 2, 3.

CRAWLER

Crawler was a band created from the ashes of Back Street Crawler, following the death of guitarist, Paul Kossoff. They recruited former IF guitarist Geoff Whitehorn to fill the vacancy created by replace Kossoff death, but the band were dropped by Atlantic Records because of Whitehorn's then relative obscurity added to the fact it was Kossoff rather than the band they were interested in. Crawler initially toured the UK as part of a package tour which included label mates Boxer and Moon. Their debut album, Crawler, did well in the USA, thanks to airplay of the track Stone Cold Sober, on FM radio stations. The band concentrated on the American market and working with producer Gary Lyons they released a second album, Snake, Rattle & Roll.

WILLIE NELSON - Revolutions Of Time...The Journey 1975 - 1993 (1995)

More so than most country artists, Willie Nelson is difficult to thoroughly investigate without delving into his individual releases, which often revolve around either musical or lyrical concepts. So give Columbia credit for assembling such a cohesive, provocative collection, one that covers every aspect of his glorious career and that amply showcases his distinctive singing, songwriting, and gut-string work. DISC 1 (Pilgrimage), worth the price of admission alone, focuses on his remarkable 1970s and early-1980s work: the Red Headed Stranger cuts, the Lefty Frizzell tributes, the Stardust standards, searing live cuts, the Electric Horseman cowboy odes and Honeysuckle Rose gems, and the best of Always on My Mind. DISC 2 (Sojourns) pairs Nelson with an impressive array of partners: Haggard, Price, Miller, Pierce, Charles, Young (both Neil and Faron), Santana, Possum, Dylan, Cash, Snow, Jennings, Julio, Dolly, Kristofferson. DISC 3 (Exodus) collects the mid-1980s and early-1990s stuff, and while it contains moments of brilliance, it doesn't match up to the first two discs. All in all, a marvelous 60-song collection filled with an astonishing number of spine-chilling moments. - amazon.com 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

CANNED HEAT
- On The Road Again (1989)

Their debut album was released on the Liberty label in 1967 just in time to make a major appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival. After being arrested in Denver on drug charges the band's image as the bad boys of rock eventually led to their becoming a favorite of the Hells Angels and other biker clubs. For their second album, Wilson wrote "On The Road Again," which featured Wilson's high-pitched vocals. In 1968, the band released their next effort, a two record set "Living the Blues", that featured "Going Up The Country" which was to many a highpoint of the legendary Woodstock festival. Wilbert "Kansas City" Harrison's "Let's Work Together," pumped up the charts about the same time Caned Heat was gigged at the Isle of Wight festival. Canned Heat has toured extensively throughout the world and performed at numerous festivals including the original Woodstock, Monterey Pop, Newport Pop, the Isle of Wight Festival in England, the Sturgis Motorcycle Run U.S.A. to mention just a few. They have performed at world-renowned venues such as the Olympia in Paris, both Fillmore Auditoriums, The Avalon Ballroom, The Family Dog in Denver, The Kaleidoscope, Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden and the Royal Albert Hall. Their music has been featured on television and in films like "Woodstock", "1969", "Flashback", and "Forrest Gump". Their music is currently being heard in various television commercials." On The Road Again" for Miller Beer, "Goin' Up The Country" for Pepsi, Chevrolet and McDonald's, "Let's Work Together" for Lloyd's Bank, England's Electric Company and Target Stores, "Christmas Blues" for Heineken with other songs for 7-Up and Levi's. Canned Heat continues today with long time members Fito de la Parra and Larry "the Mole" Taylor leading the way. Vocal duties have been handled over the years by Walter Trout, James Thornberry and Robert Lucas. Recently, Fito de la Parra has written a book, "Living the Blues," which chronicles the history of Canned Heat. 1, 2.

DEREK & THE DOMINOS
- In Concert (1973)

Recorded live at the Fillmore East, New York, New York in 1970.

DISC 1:
01. Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad? 02. Got to Get Better In A Little While 03. Let It Rain 04. Presence of the Lord

DISC 2: 01. Tell The Truth 02. Bottle Of Red Wine 03. Roll It Over 04. Blues Power 05. Have You Ever Loved a Woman

It probably shouldn't matter that the music on this album was made over two years ago (the set was recorded at gigs at the Fillmore East in October, 1970) but somehow there's a strange feel of time warp. Perspectively speaking, the Dominos had done their first public gig only about four months previously, a benefit in England. A few weeks later the Eric Clapton solo LP was released, the one recorded while Clapton was on tour with Delaney & Bonnie and Friends. The album had been completed except for final mixing, which was delayed for some time, and by its final release date much of Eric's style and approach had changed; still the LP was the first evidence that Clapton had any vocal ability beyond an occasional "Crossroads."

VARGAS BLUES BAND
- Flamenco Blues Experience (2008)

Javier Vargas was born in Madrid. When he was nine years old, he and his family moved to Argentina, where his parents had lived during the Spanish Civil War. They lived in Mendoza, San Luis, Buenos Aires and also in Mar del Plata, where he started playing the guitar with young musicians in places such as garages. He took guitar lessons, and he also used to go clubs to listen to groups playing blues live. The first guitar Vargas had, present from his father, it was a Spanish guitar with naylon strings. When he got his first electrical guitar Javier had only 12 years. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Cream, Rolling Stones, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix etc. became famous and influenced by all this new and amazing music, Vargas decided to play guitar professionally. He was also inspired by the American Blues of B.B.King, Albert King, Freddy King, Albert Collins. When his family moved to Venezuela in the 70s, Javier took his guitar and went to the U.S.A. to improve his knowledge of guitar by attending University. He lived in Nashville, Tennessee and in Los Angeles, where he played at clubs and also worked as a session guitar player. Every night he used to jam with American and English musicians. At these jams he met Alvin Lee, Roy Buchanan, Canned Heat and many others from whom he learnt a lot.

The album features collaborations by Frank Marino (Mahogany Rush), Raimundo Amador (one of Spain's finest flamenco guitarists), Devon Allman (son of Greg Allman), Rey Morao (a well known Spanish duo), The Cherry Boppers (an awesome European funk band), and many more. The artwork for the album has been created by none other than Bob Masse (Jimi Hendrix, The cream, Bob Dylan, Janis Jopplin, U2, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Strokes, etc...) 1, 2.

TONY ASHTON & JON LORD
- First Of The Big Bands (1974)

Tony Ashton (1946-2001) was an English rock pianist, keyboardist, singer, composer, producer and artist. Tony Ashton first entered Deep Purple history when his band Ashton, Gardener & Dyke supported Deep Purple in the early 1970s. He became friends with Jon Lord and they teamed up for the "First Of The Big Bands" album from 1974. This project was launched with a gig at London's Paladium the same year and the BBC taped a special live appearance at Golders Green Hippodrome in London. The album of this show, titled "First Of The Big Bands, BBC Live In Concert 1974", is a tour-de-force groovy, rhythm & blues, boogie piano and Hammond organ, big band fest. Tony Ashton appeared on several of Jon Lord's solo albums - "Gemini Suite", "Windows" and "Before I Forget". Together they also composed the soundtrack for "The Last Rebel" movie in 1971. Tony also contributed to Roger Glover's "Butterfly Ball" project and Eddie Hardin's "Wizards Convention" album. Tony Ashton's most prominent role in the history of Deep Purple came when he got together with Jon Lord and Ian Paice in 1976 for the excellent but short-lived Paice Ashton Lord project. *

ROLLING STONES
- Exile On Main Street (1972)

Released as a double LP—and drawing on influences from rock & roll, blues, country and soul—Exile was initially greeted with lukewarm reviews, but is now widely considered the band's finest work and one of the defining masterpieces of the rock era. In 2003, the album was ranked number 7 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

From the swaggering frustration in the first song ("I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping," Mick Jagger sings in the hyper "Rocks Off"), the Stones speed through familiar neighborhoods of country, blues, and R&B on Exile. They never even bother to stop when they've crashed into something. They don't leap into new worlds so much as master the old ones, turning Slim Harpo's blues obscurity "Hip Shake" into a harp-and-piano steamroller and setting spines a-cracking in "Ventilator Blues." Both "Tumbling Dice" and Keith Richards's "Happy" have become hits, but the 1972 album is most notable for its overall murky adrenaline. 1, 2.

Freedom, a better than average British hard rock band with psychedelic and blues leanings, formed around drummer Bobby Harrison (ex-Procol Harum) and with the help of guitarists Steve Jolly and Roger Saunders and singer/keyboardist Peter Dennis, were soon opening for the likes of Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull. Originally released in 1972, "Is More Than A Word" hails from the band's most mature period and is definitely worth rediscovery!

HIGH TIDE - High Tide (1970)

High Tide was a band formed in 1969 by Tony Hill (guitar, keyboards, and vocals), Simon House (violin and keyboards), Pete Pavli (bass) and Roger Hadden (drums). The trademark of their first album Sea Shanties was the constant battle between the electric guitar of Tony Hill and the electric violin of Simon House. There is hardly a quiet moment on Sea Shanties, the heaviest tracks being "Futilist's Lament" and the instrumental "Death Warmed Up". Stylistically it is a mix of hard rock, psychedelic, blues, folk, and jazz-rock, and is sometimes even cited as the first progressive metal album.

The second, self-titled, album is a little less heavy and introduces some keyboards, played by Hill and House; the folk and jazz-rock influences are more noticeable on this album. Featuring just three tracks - Blankman Cries Again, The Joke and Saneonymous - it can be seen as a concept of sorts, the theme being the slow slide into pychosis. Indeed, Roger Hadden was later committed for just that reason.

JIMMY THACKERY AND THE DRIVERS
- Inside Tracks (2008)

After ten albums with his backup band, the Drivers, Jimmy Thackery seems to have tired of reading reviews that extol his solos while dismissing his songs as mere platforms for his guitar dexterity and sesting that his weak voice isn't really needed. With 2007's Solid Ice, the tenth of those albums, he began to try to up the quality of his songwriting and expand his musical range, and that process continues with the 11th Drivers album, Inside Tracks. "Blinking of an Eye," for example, is sung in the voice of a man whose wife has died suddenly, leading him to reflect on how quickly things can change. "Change the Rules" and "Just a Feeling" express the songwriter's social conscience, and "What Part of 'No'" is his attack on the kind of pop stars he sees on TV. In such songs, Thackery tends to put his guitar solos off until the end, after he's had his say in his lyrics. There are a couple of instrumentals, and he uses them to explore other musical styles. "Landlocked" is reminiscent of Duane Eddy, although the twangy guitar sound gives way to more lyrical playing in the manner of Mark Knopfler. And "(You Got Me) Now What You Gonna Do" is a country shuffle that might have been lifted from a Chet Atkins album. Thackery certainly has made lots of records full of hot guitar playing, and this one certainly isn't bereft of guitar. But fans should note that it is an attempt by the artist to stretch himself creatively, making it a more diverse and tentative effort than usual. - All Music Guide 1, 2.

ROBIN TROWER - Day Of The Eagle: The Best Of Robin Trower (2008)

2008 compilation of digitally remastered cuts from the English guitarist and Rock legend, often compared to Jimi Hendrix due to his bluesy Psychedelic style. He was originally a member of Procol Harum but soon left to pursue a solo career. Throughout the '70s, Trower was a staple on FM radio alongside many other great Classic Rock artists. Since his heyday, his output has not been as prolific, although he is still respected and revered by fans of Classic Rock and guitar heroes.

"Day of the Eagle" is one of the best hard rock songs of the 70's featuring the best Trower and then vocalist Jimmy Dewar had to offer. Most of the classic Trower tunes are included here in all of their glory. "Bridge of Sighs," "Daydream," "Gonna Be More suspicious," "Long Misty Days," "In City Dreams" and "Caravan to Midnight" are all great examples of Trower’s contribution to music. "Too Rolling Stoned," "Alethea" and "Rock Me Baby" are all presented with live versions, which is awesome because Trower shines stronger from the stage than the studio. Day of the Eagle also includes lesser known songs to educate those just discovering Trower, including "Man of the World," "Take a Fast Train," "About to Begin" and "The Ring." If you don’t own any Trower and want to discover what you have been missing then this is a great place to start. 1, 2.

The list of special guests who appear on Taj Mahal's Maestro is hardly what one would expect from a veteran bluesman. Among the special guests are Ziggy Marley, Los Lobos, Ben Harper, and African pop vocalist Angélique Kidjo - not exactly a conventional blues lineup. But then, Mahal is hardly a conventional blues artist. He has been providing eclectic, far-reaching albums for a long time, and that spirit of adventure is alive and well on this 2008 release (which marks his 40th year as a recording artist -- Mahal provided his first album in 1968). No one expects Mahal's albums to be the work of a blues purist; in fact, Mahal (who plays guitar, harmonica, banjo, and ukulele on Maestro) is the opposite of a blues purist. While Maestro has its share of electric blues, the veteran singer also gets into everything from soul ("Further on Down the Road") and early R&B (Fats Domino's "Hello Josephine") to reggae ("Black Man, Brown Man," "Never Let You Go") and African pop ("Zanzibar"). The latter features Kidjo on lead vocals and Toumani Diabaté on the kora (a traditional African instrument), while Los Lobos appear on "Never Let You Go" and the humorous "TV Mama" (which is among the disc's straight-ahead blues offerings). Mahal, true to form, is all over the place stylistically on this 57-minute CD - and yet, Maestro never sounds the least bit unfocused. Being eclectic comes naturally to Mahal, who sees to it that Maestro is a consistently engaging celebration of his 40th year as a recording artist. ~ All Music Guide

JETHRO TULL - Aqualung Live (2005)

Each era of rock music has had its own craftily marketed phenomenon - it was the "live album" in the '70s, "unpled" recordings in the '90s, and since the late '80s through the present day, the "tribute album." But the early 21st century saw another addition - veteran bands revisiting classic albums and performing them in their entirety. Jethro Tull's most enduring release is largely agreed to be 1971's classic Aqualung, and in late 2004 Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, and their latest Tull mates dusted off the album once more in front of a small audience for XM Radio's Then Again Live series. Since 33 years had passed between the original and the re-reading, the performances on Aqualung Live are slightly more restrained. And while some of Barre's mighty riffs can still be spotted blaring away - most notably the middle bit of "My God" - other songs get an overhauling, such as the barely recognizable "Hymn 43." In addition to revisiting the full album, several interview segments are tacked on at the end of the disc, including some interesting bits about the original recording (it turns out that Led Zeppelin were also recording nearby) and the fact that, despite popular belief, Aqualung was not a concept album. Aqualung Live proves that Anderson and Barre are still at the top of their game, unlike some other "classic rock" acts whose playing abilities have diminished over the years. - allmusic.com 1, 2.

Warhorse was a band formed by former Deep Purple bassist Nick Simper. He had left Deep Purple in 1969 and joined Marsha Hunt's backup band. Not long after, Nick Simper replaced her backing band with Ged Peck on guitar, and Mac Poole on drums. While this was going on, Simper would play in an extracurricular band along with Ged and Mac, with singer Ashley Holt. When Hunt became pregnant, the band stopped touring and Simper re-organized the group as Warhorse. Holt became the bands singer, and they would bring keyboardist Rick Wakeman onboard, but proved unreliable, and when the first demo was recorded in April 1970, he was replaced by Frank Wilson. Warhorse finaly found itself ,and was signed to Vertigo and released their debut album Warhorse in November 1970.The band would begin to tour, but made little progress. The band also saw very low promotion ,and the albm failed to chart.A single, 'St.Louis' was also released, which also failed to chart.By 1971, Ged Peck had made his exit, and was replaced by Pete Parks of Black August, a band who had been sharing Warhorse's rehearsal room. The band was forced to rush the recording of their next album. In June 1972 ,their next album Red Sea was released ,but it saw little label promotion, and soon after its release, Warhorse were dropped from the label.Around the same time Mac Poole decided to leave Warhorse, for Gong. The band decided to carry on, and they replaced Mac with Barney James. They would eventualy bring in more funk and soule elements into their music.Around this time, Rick Wakeman would borrowed Holt and James for his solo album Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Despite the fact that a new record contract for Warhorse was in the offing, both men decided to throw their lot in permanenty with Wakeman, and in June 1974 Nick Simper decided to bring the band to a close.

2007 digitally remastered 30th Anniversary edition of this influential Electronic album. Famed for it's melodic lushed spaced-out Electronica, this is the album that captured keyboard maestro Jarre at his zenith. The lead single 'Oxygene IV' is one the most recognizable Electronic pieces in recent history. The son of famed French film composer Maurice Jarre, Jean-Michel Jarre is a synthesizer wizard, who had a number of instrumental hits, beginning in 1977 with "Oxygene", the success of which propelled him to pop-star status. In the ensuing decades, he has continued releasing albums and mounting enormous stage spectacles around the globe.

"Daughter Of Time" is the fourth album by Colosseum, released in 1970. One of the most successful examples of the progressive jazz-rock fusion, here masterful keyboardist David Greenslade is joined by Chris Farlowe on vocals and bass player Louis Cennamo from Renaissance. A rich range of instruments joined by way above-average guitar playing & finishing up the album with a marathon drum solo. A concept album loosely based on man's fascination and allure for war throughout the ages, "Daughter Of Time" contains all the elements required to create a pure progressive rock album.

RUSH - Permanent Waves (1980)

01. The Spirit Of Radio
02. Freewill
03. Jacob's Ladder
04. Entre Nous
05. Different Strings
06. Natural Science

"Permanent Waves" is the seventh studio album by the Canadian rock band Rush, released January 1, 1980. "Permanent Waves" became Rush's first US Top 5 album hitting #4 and was the band's fifth Gold selling album. The album also marks a distinct transition from the heavy metal and progressive rock into a more accessible, radio-friendly style and consequently, a significant expansion in the band's record sales with perennial favourites such as "The Spirit of Radio" and "Freewill" seeing quite a fair bit of radio airplay. Falling somewhere in between heavy metal and AOR, Rush were one of the success stories of the period from 1976 to 1986--all the more surprising because few Canadians manage to break out from the land of the maple leaf in this area of music. Much of their following idolized Alex Lifeson, who was a guitar hero with the technical ability of a Page or a Beck.

"Titanic" was a rock band from Norway, which also included a British member in its line-up. It was first active from 1969 to 1979, and also reformed twice. They were one of the first Norwegian bands to enjoy hit records in both England and Germany. Previously Scandinavian bands like the Hep Stars and Oola and the Janglers had appealed mainly to their own national audiences. However, Titanic recruited British born lead singer, Roy Robinson, who wrote most of their lyrics, which he sang in English and this helped to broaden their international appeal.
Titanic made a great impression with their dynamic Santana influenced style. They made clever use of funky Hammond organ, wailing lead guitar solos and dynamic percussion, which ensured they were popular with dancers as well as listening audiences. This 1970 debut album gives a fine insight into their musical skills and attitude.

FUSION ORCHESTRA - Skeleton In Armour (1973)

FUSION ORCHESTRA was a highly talented progressive rock ensemble from the UK that did tight but not over-worked heavy prog with an honest, classic but unique sound. Singer/flautist/synthist JILL SAWARD, apparently the axis of the group, leads with a high squall and quite good flute, and paralleled the vocal sound the Wilson sisters would cultivate. Though unlike HEART, Jill Saward, Dave Bell (drums), Colin Dawson (guitar), Dave Cowell (bass), and Sten Land (synth, guitar, horns) did a very complex and multi-layered music with many roads into jazz-fusion, folk, and Celtic. The album 'Skeleton In Armour', especially for 1973, is a model of Prog Rock successfully integrated as a viable popular medium and though not truly competitive against the likes of bigger peers, is far better than many bands that have become well known. It reflects all the breakthroughs and celebrations that were occurring in British music in the early 1970s including those of JETHRO TULL, COLOSSEUM, YES, GREENSLADE, and BABE RUTH. One of the very best 'second tier' English prog bands, their album is a little known treasure and except for the commercial track 'When My Momma's Not at Home', is hugely recommended to anyone who loves earlier British prog with all the best aspects of symphonic, Canterbury, prog Folk and hard rock.

KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD BAND - Live On (1999)

Being a teenage blues guitar prodigy is a double-edged sword. Stunning technique brings attention, but also criticism that it's all style and no soul. This criticism plagued Kenny Wayne Shepherd since his popular debut album, Ledbetter Heights, and it's warranted to a certain extent. It didn't help that Shepherd so strongly recalled Stevie Ray Vaughan. It also didn't help that some of his material was a little too slick, appealing as much to album rock as to blues-rock audiences. By the time of his third album, 1999's Live On, he had begun to reconcile these two sides of his personality, but the best thing about the record is that it's tougher and stronger than its two predecessors. There's still a fair amount of crossover ,a Hendrix cover and a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well", but Shepherd not only seems to be developing a style of his own, the playing of his band has become grittier, or at least it's being captured better on record. Shepherd can still fall prey to excess, but not as often as he used to. He's figuring out how to restrain himself, and his music is all the better for it. ~ All Music Guide 1, 2.

"Live On" is the third studio album by blues solo artist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, released in 1999. "Live On" was certified Gold by the RIAA in 2000.

"Never Turn Your Back on a Friend" is Budgie's third album, released in 1973.

CANNED HEAT AND JOHN LEE HOOKER - Hooker 'N Heat (1971)

When this two-LP set was initially released in January 1971, Canned Heat was back to its R&B roots, sporting slightly revised personnel. In the spring of the previous year, Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass) and Harvey Mandel (guitar) simultaneously accepted invitations to join John Mayall's concurrent incarnation of the Bluesbreakers. This marked the return of Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (guitar) and the incorporation of Antonio "Tony" de la Barreda (bass), a highly skilled constituent of Aldolfo de la Parra (drums). Sadly, it would also be the final effort to include co-founder Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson, who passed away in September 1970. Hooker 'n Heat (1971) is a low-key affair split between unaccompanied solo John Lee Hooker (guitar/vocals) tunes, collaborations between Hooker and Wilson (piano/guitar/harmonica), as well as five full-blown confabs between Hooker and Heat. The first platter focuses on Hooker's looser entries that vacillate from the relatively uninspired ramblings of "Send Me Your Pillow" and "Drifter" to the essential and guttural "Feelin' Is Gone" or spirited "Bottle Up and Go." The latter being among those with Wilson on piano. Perhaps the best of the batch is the lengthy seven-minute-plus "World Today," which is languid and poignant talking blues, with Hooker lamenting the concurrent state of affairs around the globe. "I Got My Eyes on You" is an unabashed derivative of Hooker's classic "Dimples," with the title changed for what were most likely legal rather than artistic concerns. That said, the readings of the seminal "Burning Hell" and "Bottle Up and Go" kept their familiar monikers intact. The full-fledged collaborations shine as both parties unleash some of their finest respective work. While Canned Heat get top bill -- probably as it was the group's record company that sprung for Hooker 'n Heat -- make no mistake, as Hooker steers the combo with the same gritty and percussive guitar leads that have become his trademark. The epic "Boogie Chillen No. 2" stretches over 11-and-a-half minutes and is full of the same swagger as the original, with the support of Canned Heat igniting the verses and simmering on the subsequent instrumental breaks with all killer and no filler. The 2002 two-CD pressing by the French Magic Records label is augmented with "It's All Right," with a single edit of "Whiskey and Wimmen." - All Music Guide 1, 2.

RICK DANKO - Cryin' Heart Blues (2005)

The Band's Rick Danko delivers a solid set of studio originals from 1978 with his patent rock'n'soul voice. Previousy unheard, these songs were written and recorded with Beach Boys' and Rolling Stones' singer Blondie Chaplin as the unreleased follow-up to 1977's Rick Danko on Arista Records. Unlike that record, there's not a Band-mate in sight for these sessions-just Rick, a hand-picked set of West Coast players, and on one song even a celebrated pair of surprise guest guitarists. However, we've included recently unearthed Tommy Spurlock productions that include keyboardist Garth Hudson. Also included as a Bonus are 4 live rockin' recordings from 1979 featuring Rick, Blondie, and guest Paul Butterfield on harmonica, professionally recorded with a multi-track mobile studio. *

RICK DANKO - Rick Danko (1977)

"Rick Danko" was the 1977 eponymous debut by the bassist and singer for The Band. Featuring ten tracks written by Danko usually in conjunction with lyricists Bobby Charles and Emmett Grogan, it was the first solo album by any member of the group, and is perhaps the most accessible to date. Rick Danko is the only solo album by a member of The Band to feature each member of the group. Garth Hudson played accordion on "New Mexicoe", Robbie Robertson lead guitar on "Java Blues", Richard Manuel electric piano on "Shake It" and Levon Helm sings harmony vocal on the closing "Once Upon a Time". Danko handled bass, rhythm and lead guitars and vocals. Other guests included Eric Clapton (guitar on "New Mexicoe"), Ronnie Wood (guitar on "What a Town"), Beach Boy Blondie Chaplin (guitar and bass on various tracks) and Doug Sahm (guitar on various tracks). *

TRAVIS 'Moonchild' HADDIX
- Daylight At Midnight (2008)

Blues guitarist Travis Haddix was born on November 26, 1938 and began playing the piano at the age of seven in his home town of Walnut, Mississippi, located thirty miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. His father Chalmus was a Delta blues artist similar to Robert Johnson in style. The Haddix family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Travis continued to refine his craft by singing and playing throughout the North. The turning point came when he was eight. His brother Hal took him to see the legendary B.B. King, who came to Memphis and began playing daily at the studios of WDIA. Travis was inspired by King's guitar virtuosity and he hung around the radio station every day to learn all he could. Soon, Travis' piano playing fell by the wayside and was replaced by the guitar, which he plays on stage and in the studio. In 1959, after serving time in the army, Travis moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he joined the D.L. Rocco Band and achieved regional notoriety that led to a prominent spot with the Little Johnny Taylor group. In the mid-60s he put out a few singles on the Cleveland-based Del Nita label. Later Haddix fronted his own band called the Now Sound followed by the Travis Haddix Band. One of the acts they opened for was Mr. Clarence Carter, who helped get Travis signed to Atlanta's Ichiban Records, which was also Dr. C.C.'s label home. Haddix went on to record five discs for the label before going the independent route. Travis also contributed material to five albums by Artie "Bluesboy" White, who was concurrently on Ichiban. Since starting his own publishing company, Haddix Publishing, and label, Wann Sonn Records, Haddix has been putting out the best music of his career.

A perfect mixture of soul and blues. Soulful fretwork and clever lyrics. *

CHRIS JAMES AND PATRIC RYNN
- Stop And Think About It (2008)

In one way or another Chris and Patrick have been involved with the blues before their early teens; growing up in San Diego Chris was first introduced to the blues by his stepfather. The music of Chuck Berry was an early influence and he was playing the blues on piano at the age of eleven Patrick meanwhile in his home of Toledo was receiving a classical music education on the bass. They met each other in Chicago in the early nineties when Chris went to the Guitar Centre where Patrick was working, to invest in some picks and a harmonica. After a less than wonderful beginning they formed a partnership that would lead to the formation of the band The Blue Four, during the eighteen years in which they have been playing together a strong musical bond has been created between them and has now evolved into them striking out on their own and performing under their own names. The album is a twelve number strong collection of covers and original compositions which seamlessly merge together to establish a genuine post-war Chicago sound which lifts you up and draws you closer to the rough and tumble musical world of the period. I hasten to add that the music found on the album is no well intentioned and affectionate tribute but a no holds barred sweaty, hoarse, hard as iron Chicago session relying on serious musical know-how and invigoratingly muscular playing. 1, 2.

Liz carries on the tradition of the classic blues singer; sensual and sensuous, with a powerful, evocative soul-drenched voice. She sings self-penned songs leading the listener on an emotional and passionate journey through the minefield called love. If you’re ready for some honky-tonk and blues music, then Red Top is going to be a CD you can’t stop listening to. Liz Mandeville opens up and the longer she sings, the better her voice gets. This is a blues lady with red hair, reminiscent of Bette Midler, and a smokey, whiskey voice with a three-octave range. She shares down-to-earth blues that’s understandable even with the backup orchestra and chorus. She belts out the lyrics and each track on this album makes it sound like all the performers are having a party we must attend.

MARC BOLAN & T-REX
- The Ultimate Collection (1991)

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Marc Bolan was one of the major glam rock figures of the early '70s, especially in England. After releasing his debut solo single, "The Wizard," and its follow-ups, "The Third Degree" and "Hippy Gumbo," on Decca Records in the U.K. in 1965-1966, he joined the band John's Children in 1967. The same year, he and percussionist Steve Peregine Took formed Tyrannosaurus Rex, an acoustic duo. They made three albums, My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair but Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows (1968), Prophets, Seers and Sages, the Angels of the Ages (1968), and Unicorn (1969), then split, with Bolan retaining the band name and teaming up with Mickey Finn on the electric Beard of Stars (1970).

By the end of 1970, with the name abbreviated to T. Rex, Bolan and Finn scored a U.K. hit with "Ride a White Swan," the first of ten straight Top Ten hits, and the album T. Rex. Adding bass player Steve Curry and drummer Bill Fifield, T. Rex expanded into a full-fledged rock roll band, and scored a number one hit with "Hot Love" and another with "Get It On." (Under the title "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," the song became T. Rex's only substantial U.S. hit, making the Top Ten in 1972.) This was followed by the landmark album Electric Warrior (1971), which topped the U.K. charts and included the single "Jeepster." Then came "Telegram Sam," T. Rex's third U.K. number one. "Metal Guru" became T. Rex's fourth number one in May 1972. (During this period, with T.Rextasy hitting Britain, numerous reissues also charted.) The next new T. Rex album, The Slider, became a Top Ten hit in July 1972. T. Rex's seventh straight Top Ten single, "Children of the Revolution," peaked in the charts in September, followed by "Solid Gold Easy Action" in December. In March 1973 came "Twentieth Century Boy," the ninth T. Rex Top Ten single, and the Top Ten album Tanx. In June, "The Groover" became the band's tenth and final Top Ten single.

In August, Bolan tested the waters for using his own name on records, issuing the non-charting "Blackjack" single credited to Marc Bolan with Big Carrot, but then he retreated to the T. Rex rubric, though the original group was fragmenting. Bolan and T. Rex's commercial and critical fortunes declined afterwards, as they released Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow (1974), Bolan's Zip Gun (1975), Futuristic Dragon (1976), and Dandy in the Underworld (1977). Bolan died in an automobile accident in 1977, and his work has been reissued frequently in the U.K. - All Music Guide 1, 2.

Guitarist/vocalist Mike Zito recently released "Today", a diverse collection of outstanding songs all entwined around tasteful guitar playing and fine musicianship. Though he now hails from Nederland, Texas, growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, certainly contributed to the potpourri of interesting styles and sounds heard on the CD. For the most part, all of the songs are somewhere in the realm of contemporary rock and blues. Zito’s voice is so incredibly soulful that it can be placed into that diminutive group of elite male blue-eyed soul/blues singers like Steve Winwood, Michael McDonald and Rod Stewart. Though a sound all his own, it’s one that’s passionate and gritty, and incredibly appealing. A fine guitarist and composer as well, it’s a winning combination of a genuine and complete performer.

RORY BLOCK - Blues Walkin' Like A Man: A Tribute To Son House (2008)

This album recreates and reinterprets the music of the father of the delta blues.Rory Block was 15 years old when she met Son House. Two improbable people. A young teenage Greenwich Village guitar prodigy and an older black man, 62, who had recorded nine of the most powerful blues pieces ever for the Paramount label in 1930.Years later, she recalled the moment: "Backstage at the Village Gate in 1965 Son House virtually radiated a golden light. As I watched him perform, rolling his head back, slamming the strings and almost choking on the intensity, I learned a deep lesson about the power of the music which became an inseparable part of me."Now, more than 40 years later, the guitarist has paid Son House an ultimate tribute: a collection of 13 songs associated with the legendary blues singer. Rory Block’s life-long involvement with the blues has reached a new high point with this release. 1, 2.

LUCINDA WILLIAMS
- Little Honey (2008)

"Little Honey" is the ninth studio album by Lucinda Williams, her tenth album overall. She has always been adept at painting landscapes of the soul, illuminating the spirit's shadowy nooks and shimmering crannies, but she's never captured the sun breaking through the clouds as purely as on her new Lost Highway release, "Little Honey".The album features a duet with Elvis Costello "Jailhouse Tears" Other guest vocalists include Matthew Sweet, Susanna Hoffs, Jim Lauderdale, Tim Easton and Charlie Louvin.

"I'm in a different phase of my life, so there are more happy moments on this album," the singer-songwriter says of her ninth studio set. " 'Darkly introspective,' is one phrase people have used to describe a lot of my songs. There are moody songs, but I'm looking outside myself a little bit more. These aren't 'boy meets girl, boy leaves girl, girl gets bummed out' songs -- there's a lot more than that going on." - Lucinda Williams

BO DIDDLEY - His Best (1997)

The Chess Records' "His Best" compilations are generally outstanding, and the Bo Diddley installation is no exception. Outside of purchasing Bo's key studio albums, or shelling out for the comprehensive box set, HIS BEST is the Bo Diddley disc to have, since it covers all of his essential hits, from "Roadrunner" to "I'm a Man" to "Hey! Bo Diddley" to "Who Do You Love?" But the real surprise here is the quality of the remastering, which brings out a real crispness and edge to the recordings, and the "longer cuts" that result from re-edits to the original masters. Also here, of course, are the infectious, hugely influential Bo Didley beat, the rumbling, ch-chinking guitar, Bo's neo-blues wails and self-mythologizing lyrics, and everything else that makes this music some of the absolute best and most important in the chapters of early rock & roll. 1, 2.

FRACTION - Moon Blood (1970)

01. Sanc-Divided
02. Come Out Of Her
03. Eye Of The Hurricane
04. Sons Come To Birth
05. This Bird (Sky High)

Fraction was a short-lived Los Angeles garage band. In the summer of 1970, the band entered a studio and cut their only album, Moon Blood. Only 200 copies of this little psychedelic masterpiece were ever pressed, making it over the years a mega rarity going for ridiculous sums of money. Vocally, Jim Beach works the Jim Morrison side of the street while the band works the standard riffs of the era into a fuzz overloaded stomp that sounds like a perfect period piece. Lovers of fuzz drenched psychedelia will go crazy over this one. ~ All Music Guide

EARL KING - Earl's Pearls:
The Very Best Of Earl King 1955-1960 (1993)

Earl King (1934 – 2003) was a singer, guitarist, and songwriter, most active in blues music. Being a composer of well known standards such as "Come On" (covered by Jimi Hendrix), and Professor Longhair's "Big Chief", he is considered to be one of the most important figures in New Orleans R&B music and beyond.

This top-notch collection brings together 25 tracks from King's 1955-1960 tenure with Ace Records in Jackson, Mississippi. Classic '50s New Orleans music doesn't come much finer than this, and Earl's contributions to the genre are plentiful on this disc, starting with his big hit, the original "Those Lonely, Lonely Nights." A real treat is hearing Huey "Piano" Smith soloing with complete abandon on tracks like "Nobody Cares," "Little Girl," "I'll Take You Back Home" and "Baby You Can Get Your Gun." Earl's guitar playing is equally fine and his Guitar Slim-derived style is well to the fore on "My Love Is Strong" and "I'm Packing Up." Although King's discography encompasses many labels and sessions, this is a great place to start absorbing this Crescent City genius.

TRACKS: 01. Those Lonely, Lonely Nights 02. Baby You Can Get Your Gun 03. Everybody Got to Cry 04. I'm Packing Up 05. Nobody Cares 06. Little Girl 07. My Love Is Strong 08. It Must Have Been Love 09. I'll Take You Back Home 10. Mother Told Me Not to Go 11. Is Everything Alright 12. Those Lonely, Lonely Feelings 13. You Can Fly High 14. Well O Well O Well O Baby 15. I'll Never Get Tired 16. Canadian bluesman Paul Reddick is a talented songwriter with considerable literary roots that extend far beyond the blues, but incorporate a wealth of pre-war acoustic-blues influences. With the assistance of producer/guitarist Colin Lindon, Reddick crafted a pair of award-winning, critically-acclaimed albums that announced the blues harpist's arrival on the scene. The upcoming Northern Blues release Sugarbird is the pair's third musical collaboration, and it promises more of the raw, poetic blues that Reddick has become known for creating. Sugarbird also features an appearance by roots-rock legend Garth Hudson of the Band on three songs.

GEORGE HARRISON
- Somewhere In England (1981)

01.Blood From A Clone
02.Unconsciousness Rules
03.Life Itself
04.All Those Years Ago
05.Baltimore Oriole
06.Teardrops
07.That Which I Have Lost
08.Writing's On The Wall
09.Hong Kong Blues
10.Save The World
11.Save The World (demo)

This record had a troubled birth, for when George Harrison originally submitted it for release in November 1980, Warner Bros. rejected it, claiming that four songs -- "Flying Hour," "Lay His Head," "Sat Singing," and "Tears of the World" (once available on the bootleg Ohnothimagen) -- were not worthy of being issued. Harrison was forced to go back into the studio to cut four new tunes, delivering a bitterly barbed thrust at his record label in "Blood From a Clone" (which they did release) and a tune originally meant for Ringo Starr but rewritten as a remembrance after John Lennon's assassination ("All Those Years Ago"), as well as "Teardrops" and "That Which I Have Lost." As a result, the most compelling issue of this album is the contest of wills between the artist and the suits. Now how do the four deleted tunes stack up against the ones that replaced them? The four missing tunes are of generally even quality, even similar in sound, although "Tears of the World" is a strident attack against corporate and political masters that probably unnerved the executives the most. Actually, the six tunes that Warner Bros. spared should have been more likely candidates for the hook, including the curious covers of two Hoagy Carmichael songs, "Baltimore Oriole" and "Hong Kong Blues." Yet in general, the new ones are indeed superior and more varied, with more of a punch than the ones they replaced. The bouncy "All Those Years Ago" is a definite gain, being the most heartfelt song on the record as well as a de facto Beatles reunion (Starr plays drums and Paul and Linda McCartney overdubbed backing vocals), and it was justly rewarded with a number two showing on the singles charts. The official release is slightly preferable over the bootlegs of the original. [Somewhere in England was reissued in 2004 with a different cover based on Harrison's original intention for the cover, plus a demo of "Save the World" as a bonus track.] ~ All Music Guide

JOHNNY WINTER
- Winter Essentials 1960-1967 (2003)

These are the earliest recordings of blues guitarist Johnny Winter recorded in the '60s before he was signed by Columbia in 1968. Most of the material is comprised of doo wop, R&B, and twist instrumentals, all gritty enough not to be relegated as after the first listen. Winter also covers several songs he obviously was fond of by Chuck Berry, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Ray Charles, Mose Allison, Lowell Fulson, and Danny White's "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye," a song that would also show up on his first Alligator release from 1984, Guitar Slinger. The only misstep here is an attempt at the burgeoning psychedelic movement on "Birds Can't Row Boats," which is as silly as the title, but somehow, compared to everything else on the disc, comes off as a charming abnormally in his discography. ~ All Music Guide 1, 2, 3.

1, 2.

The best collection yet devoted to Procol Harum's classic early period ties together the many facets of their sound and their early history, including numerous outtakes and all of the music on four albums from 1967 through 1970. The clarity of the sound makes the first album -- which was roundly criticized, especially in England, for having been cut in mono in late 1967 -- seem a lot more muscular and progressive here than it did in its original release form. The producers have tampered with the song order on A Salty Dog, moving that record's title track in amongst disc three's single sides for time considerations while still leaving "Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Homburg" off of the first CD (the original commercial flaw with the debut album in England was the absence of either of those songs, and the seven-month-plus delay in getting it out). From the psychedelic/progressive blues stylings of Shine on Brightly to the self-consciously leaner, harder Home, this is the optimum way to hear the band. The collection also documents the change from somewhat light, optimistic psychedelia in 1967/1968 to the darker, edgier psychedelia of 1970 and beyond. The best part for collectors will be disc three, which, in addition to the group's hit singles and surprisingly fascinating B-sides from 1967-1970, also includes outtakes from unfinished early album sessions and alternate takes (with different personnel) of "Whiter Shade of Pale," "Homburg," and others, some in stereo. The notes are reasonably thorough, although they skimp a little in telling the story of the recording of "Whiter Shade of Pale" and the subsequent assembling of the permanent band. ~ All Music Guide

MUDDY WATERS
- King Bee (1981)

03. Mean Old Frisco Blues
04. Forever Lonely
05. I Feel Like Going Home
06. Champagne & Reefer

08. (My Eyes) Keep Me in Trouble
09. Deep Down in Florida, #2
10. No Escape From The Blues
11. I Won't Go On
12. Clouds in My Heart

King Bee was the last album Muddy Waters recorded. Coming last in a trio of triumphant studio outings, and produced by Johnny Winter, it is also a mixed bag literally. During the sessions for King Bee, Waters, his manager, and his band were all in dispute over money. According to the liner notes by guitarist Bob Margolin, who was the guitarist for the Muddy Waters Blues Band, the conflict arose form Waters' health being on the wane and him playing less. The bandmembers wanted more money for the fewer gigs they did play in order to make ends meet. Ultimately a split occurred and the band quit. Because of the tensions in the studio preceding the split,Winter felt the sessions had not produced enough solid material to yield an entire album. He subsequently filled out King Bee with outtakes from the Hard Again sessions. For the listener, King Bee is a leaner and meaner record. None of the good-time exuberance present on the previous two outings is present here. This is blues, direct and immediate, it's a snarling, growling album. And it's true the band appears to be a bit stilted on some of these tracks, but it's still a solid, wonderful record. The title track, "Mean Old Frisco," "Sad Sad Day," and "I Feel Like Going Home," are all solid, razor-sharp blues with killer ensemble work (with Margolin, Winter, Guitar Junior, Jerry Portnoy, Pinetop Perkins, Calvin Jones, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, and Charles Calmese in the band how could it sound anything short of awesome?) as well as Waters in fine voice. The Sony Legacy issue features completely remastered sound and Margolin's candid notes, but it also hosts two bonus tracks from the King Bee sessions that Winter didn't see fit to release the first time. There's a redo of "I Won't Go Down," a cut from the '50s that Waters sings in his lower baritone roar, and "Clouds in My Heart," a deep, long, sad blues that is one of the great unearthed treasures in Waters catalog. This cut alone with all of its deep emotion and the sound of a band trying to hold the storm of emotions in check and failing is a masterpiece and one of the most amazing blues tunes of the last 30 years. While King Bee may have been considered last and least of Waters' Columbia albums, it is more than worth reconsidering. ~ All Music Guide

Originally from Nottingham in the UK, this band of virtuoso musicians under the leadership of Alvin Lee conquered the UK scene and then spread their wings to the USA. Their blend of Jazz, Blues and Rock was initially slightly awkward but their first album provided an opening for them. They were never short of live work from this time on; the L.P. prompted top U.S. promoter Bill Graham to book Ten Years After at his Fillmore West venue in San Francisco in 1968. In July 1969, Ten Years After were asked to play at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island but this was overlooked due to another little gig called Woodstock. And it was at Woodstock that TYA’s trademark song ‘I’m Going Home’ and Alvin’s furious fretwork catapulted them into more mainstream popularity. The Woodstock film further enhanced Alvin’s reputation as one of the premier blues guitarists, although he never achieved the popularity or esteem of the gods of guitar like Clapton and Hendrix. Alvin Lee had an imposing presence on stage, and was rather fond of the top hat. Along with Chicken Shack, Savoy Brown and Led Zeppelin they played at the Cherry Trees pub in Welwyn Garden City in the late sixties. Ten Years After were on the road between 1968 and 1974 so much it was incredible that they got to do any studio albums. But they managed to churn out a few during the 1970’s - the Double Live album ‘Recorded Live’ is as good a representation of their stuff as any out there. By 1974 the band split. There were efforts to mount a reunion in the late 80’s and 1990’s and a band by the name of Ten Years After did tour…and continue to do so worldwide as a fantastic blues-rock band with Joe Gooch as lead guitarist and Leo Lyons, Ric Lee and Chick Churchill from the original band.

AMERICAN BEAUTY was an instant classic when it was first released November of 1970. It is among the most satisfying and enduring of the Grateful Dead's studio recordings, expanding as it does on the engaging mix of country, blues, and folk materials they first coined earlier in the year with WORKINGMAN'S DEAD. The musical vision of the Dead is more sharply focused on AMERICAN BEAUTY from the serene reflection and compassion of the opening "Box Of Rain" and the earthy mysticism of "Ripple," to the sensual rock of "Sugar Magnolia" and the anthemic proto-boogie of the closing "Truckin'." But then, every tune on AMERICAN BEAUTY has attained a classic resonance, both from decades of steady airplay, and the way the Dead seemed to continually revive these popular standards for their concert repertoire.

Expanded & remastered version of the band's 1970 classic featuring many of the Dead's best-known songs plus bonus tracks 'Truckin' (single version) & live tracks 'Friend of the Devil', 'Candyman', 'Till The Morning Comes', 'Attics of My Life' & 'Truckin'.

Christie were a British pop band formed at the end of the 1960s. Christie are by far the most uncomplicated, simple and pleasing British group to emerge this year. They're not trying to be heavy — they're not in fact trying to be anything except commercially successful, and here they do succeed brilliantly. Christie is also the album's title, featuring of course "Yellow River" and the anticipated follow-up hit "San Bernadino". But Jeff Christie is a proficient writer and there's plenty more good tunes here — like "Country Boy" and "Johnny One Time". Every song is melodic and the best use is made of limited instrumentation. Just have a listen .. you should be happily surprised.

AC-DC - Stiff Upper Lip (2004)

Stiff Upper Lip, AC/DC's 15th studio album, may not reach the heights of Back in Black or Highway to Hell, but it delivers strongly and satisfyingly. It's the record that the highly-touted, Rick Rubin-produced Ballbreaker should have been: a simple, addictive, hard album, bursting with bold riffs and bolstered by a crunching, thrillingly visceral sound. Sure, there are absolutely no new ideas, but that's the point. AC/DC knows their strengths and they embrace them. And why shouldn't they? Nobody writes a better riff than the Young brothers; each song has a riff so catchy, it feels like you've heard it for years. Is there anything earth-shaking? Hardly, but it's largely terrific nonetheless, just because AC/DC are so good at what they do. It's simple music, to be sure, but it's unassumingly musical and, in a way rather smart. If making music like this was really that easy, why can't anybody else do it this well? Some bands are capable of knocking out one record like this -- one, maybe two. AC/DC does it nearly every time out. They've never really stretched, yet that's why they have one of the most reliable catalogs in rock & roll. When you put on one of their records, you know what you're in for, and they always deliver. With Stiff Upper Lip, they're not at classic status, but they're still top-notch. This may not be the first AC/DC record for a collection, but once you're into their scene, it's a fine place to be. [The Australian release includes a bonus disc featuring a link to their website, live performances of "Back in Black," "Hard as a Rock," "Ballbreaker," "Whole Lotta Rose," and "Let There Be Rock" from 1996 recorded in Madrid, and three videos: "Stiff Upper Lip," "Safe in New York City," and "Satellite Blues."] ~ All Music Guide

THE WHO - Endless Wire (2006)

The legendary band's first studio album since 1982 includes a full version of their mini-opera "Wire & Glass," which was recently released (appropriately enough) as a mini-album. After a long period of relative inactivity, the Who return with a dramatic, growling new release. The album begins with a set of grizzled rockers and laments the bombastic "Mike Post Theme" and "God Speaks, of Marty Robbins," respectively much of which brims with Townshend and Daltry's portentous soul-searching. But the second half, a 10-song miniature rock opera, has the most interesting writing, the best being the title track. Though unlikely to be among the Who's greatest, Endless Wire is their finest collection in some time more than 24 years, to be exact.

Guitarist, lyricist, and vocalist John Earl Walker became enamored with the blues at age 13, after being exposed to records by legendary guitarists of the genre such as Albert King, Magic Sam, T-Bone Walker, and Freddie King. By his 16th birthday, Walker had already begun playing guitar at local events and in clubs whenever possible. In 1967 he formed the blues-rock band the Plastic People, which included bassist Pete Harris and guitarist Joey Tremelo. Three years later the Plastic People changed their name to Plum Nelly, recorded one album for Capitol Records in '71, and gained national exposure opening shows for B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Alice Cooper, and Iggy Pop, to name just a few. The Plum Nelly LP is now a very rare and sought after collectors item! Following the breakup of Plum Nelly in 1976, Walker formed the first of several incarnations of the John Earl Walker Band. Walker then released his debut CD, I'm Leavin' You, in 2002, followed by Little Miss Perfect and People Are Talkin' two years later. All three discs are available on the New York-based Walkright Records label. John Earl Walker's band consists of veteran players who are gaining world-wide acceptance playing festivals, and through extensive internet, and terrestial radio airplay. John toured Australia in 2006, playing with many of the top players down under. John Earl Walker, and Peter Harris were both original members of Capitol Records recording artists Plum Nelly. Now his greatest album "Come Over Here" is here, dont miss it thats all I can say. - All Music Guide

He is currently playing in various groups; apart from the Sharade Band, he is most notably performing with Larry's Blues Band with Larry Schmucky, who have been drawing in the crowds for decades. With considerable experience behind him, Chris is getting back into the scene at a slightly older age. He's in good company with other well-known, successful musicians and blues men. His love of the blues, his pronounced feeling, and his talent for sound and virtuosity on the harmonica make him a unique musician who has lots to offer.

With special Guest's BILLY BRANCH and CHICO BANKS. The new cd BLUES IS MY LIFE contains fine traditional blues and many of Chris’ original songs, a funky blend of jazz, R&B and blues.

Having played in famed Toronto acts Luke & The Apostles and then, briefly, The Ugly Duckings, guitarist Mike McKenna took out an advertisement asking other like-minded individuals to form a new blues band. Joe Mendelson answered the ad and this team-up provided the basis of Mendelson Mainline in the summer of 1968. Former Paupers' bassist Denny Gerrard was the next to join and another advertisement brought in new-comer Tony Nolasco from Sudbury. The band worked its way around Yorkville with Denny Gerrard soon being replaced by former Grant Smith & The Power bassist Mike Harrison in 1968. With bigger profile concert gigs, the band's vibrant live show was committed to tape in September 1968 a session that would later come back to haunt the band. McKenna Mendelson Mainline relocated to England late that year to pursue a record deal. After being signed to Liberty (United Artists) in the Spring of 1969, they worked the same English club circuit as up and coming bands like Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin. In July of 1969 a single day recording session yielded the first Liberty Records album 'Stink'. They returned to Canada to await the release of the new album.

Recorded in Toronto on September 5 & 9, 1968.

The concept is so deceptively simple that one wonders why it took so long...every year, twice a year, the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise Company charters a big ol' luxury ship and recruits about two dozen blues, R&B, and roots-rock bands/artists to perform during a week-long cruise. Depending on the time of year, the ships hit either the Caribbean or the coastal region known as the "Mexican Riviera." Aside from dozens of individual band performances, there are also nightly jam sessions that, sayeth the grapevine, have been known to get somewhat...ahem...rowdy. Four performers had so much fun playing together during the October 2007 cruise that afterwards they decided to climb on a bus and carry the party cross-country. Tommy Castro and his band, along with singer Deanna Bogart, guitarist Ronnie Baker Brooks (son of the legendary Lonnie Brooks), and harmonica maestro "Magic Dick" Salwitz, formerly of the J. Geils Band, packed it up and packed them into clubs up and down the California coast. The best of these shows have been collected on Command Performance, the group performing together under the banner of The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue.

Electrifying live recording featuring blues veterans Tommy Castro, Deanna Bogart, Ronnie Baker Brooks and Magic Dick, plus special guests Marcia Ball, Elvin Bishop and Curtis Salgado.

DR JOHN - Plays Mac Rebennack
- The Legendary Sessions - Vol. 1 (1981)

The title of 1981's DR. JOHN PLAYS MAC REBENNACK (the artist's real name) offers a sly commentary on this double identity (the well-known showman plays a rendition of his "real self"). Though Dr. John's keyboards were prominent on his recordings throughout the '70s, this disc an entire album of songs on unaccompanied piano is the first to showcase his skills so boldly. As per usual, Dr. John mixes blues, boogie-woogie, jazz, and New Orleans R&B with a funky flair. The absence of his raspy growl of a voice on many of these tracks, and the lack of his standard dense instrumental mix is not a deterrent; in fact, there is a mellow easiness to the whole album that suits Rebennack nicely. Whether on re-workings of standards ("The Nearness of You") or the artist's originals, the listener has the sense of having happily stumbled across the artist playing solo in some off-the-beaten-path smoky nightclub in the French Quarter of the Big Easy.

DR JOHN - Plays Mac Rebennack
- The Legendary Sessions - Vol. 2 (2006)

The second of back-to-back solo albums cut in the early '80s, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack: The Legendary Sessions Volume Two (originally released as The Brightest Smile in Town) presents a more balanced mix of vocal and instrumental tracks than its predecessor, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack. While it's fun to hear the great New Orleans pianist romp through "Box Car Boogie" and patiently work his way through the twilight blues of "Pretty Libby," the unexpected treats are the best: a heartsick version of Jimmy Rodgers's "Waiting for a Train;" a Doc Pomus cover, "Average Kind of Guy," that sounds like Randy Newman on a particularly good day; and "Marie La Veau," a highly syncopated bow to one of the Crescent City's many voodoo queens. By the time Rebennack ends Brightest Smile with two gorgeous instrumentals a lovely take on Harold Arlen's "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Suite Home New Orleans" you're reminded just how encyclopedic his knowledge of American music is.

TRACKS: 01. Saddled the Cow 02. Boxcar Boogie 03. The Brightest Smile in Town 04. Waiting For a Train 05. Monkey Puzzle 06. Touro Infirmary 07. Just A Closer Walk With Thee / Didn't He Ramble 08. This trio plays old-school hill country and Delta blues, even though the members range in age from 26 to 33. There's a satisfying mix of acoustic and electric numbers, and when the band plugs in, sometimes it veers off into '50s Chicago-style blues. Although the sound covers most of the blues bases, geographically the group hails from the non-blues hotbed of Kansas. (The title, 1861, refers to the year Kansas became a state.) Guitarist Aaron Moreland, who plays everything from the National steel to ''cigar box guitars,'' and gritty vocalist and harmonica player Dustin Arbuckle share writing duties, with Brad Horner supplying the requisite primitive beats. The well-chosen covers include Hound Dog Taylor's ''Gonna Send You Back to Georgia'' and R.L. Burnside's ''See My Jumper'' and the Moreland-Arbuckle originals share the raw energy of Burnside and Junior Kimbrough's music. The band sometimes rocks out like the North Mississippi Allstars, another obvious influence. It's yet another fine signing for Northern Blues - Chicago Sun Times

Butler was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Butler left New Orleans and relocated to Colorado, where he still resides. He is known for his prodigious technique and his ability to play in many styles of music. Referred to by Dr. John as "the pride of New Orleans", Henry Butler is his generation's representative in the Crescent City's unique lineage of piano legends such as Professor Longhair, James Booker, Tuts Washington, Jelly Roll Morton, etc.

Co-produced by George Winston, who produced Butler's "Orleans Inspiration", this disc is a collection of live solo performances that include several instrumentals as well his renditions of several blues and R&B classics. The strength of this recording is his piano playing especially on the marvelous renditions of `Basin Street Blues,', his own tour de force `Orleans Inspiration,' and the late Alvin Batiste's "North American Idiosyncrasies.' As a vocalist, Butler sometimes come off as a bit melodramatic to these ears (explaining the four stars as opposed to four and half or five), but even on such a well-known number as Professor Longhair's `Tipitina,' he radically reworks it in his stunning original solo and the piano and a wordless vocal part lifts up his rendition of the Ernie K-Doe classic, `Mother-in-Law.' While the overwrought vocal on `Sitting on the Dock of the Bay,' is perhaps the low point, the rollicking `Let It Roll,' (originally on the marvelous "VU-DU-Menz" album with Corey Harris) picks things up.

Born in Monticello, Mississippi in 1933, Smith arrived in Chicago as part of the post war migration North in the 1950's. He had been a bass player prior to coming to Chicago, but soon switched to guitar and began playing gigs around town. Some Blues musicians are known for their ability to wring emotion out of lyrics, others for the way their guitar playing pulls at your heart strings. Byther Smith brings to his music an intensity of emotion that shines through in the forcefulness of both his guitar playing and his vocals. If emotion is an electrical current powering music, than Smith is a conductor who translates it into guitar and vocals that pulses with an intensity that could power a small city. Constantly driving forward, his music challenges the listener to keep pace with the level of emotion he's transmitting and to let it carry them places where others aren't able to venture.

Every once in awhile there comes along an album, or an artist that makes all the crap that goes along with this business somewhat worthwhile. Such is the case with guitarist Ryan McGarvey, whose debut release, 'Forward In Reverse' shows a young artist who has arrived fully formed both playing - wise and compositionally. Bucking the trend favored by most young axeslingers emerging in the genre of throwing in a couple of originals mixed in with a glut of covers, this solid debut disc features all original compositions. Serving to put him ahead of the curve creatively, this is the work of a player whom has a bright future ahead and then some from the evidence put forth here. Opening up for and playing with such artists as Joe Bonamassa, Blue Oyster Cult, Gov't Mule, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and Buddy Guy, having a deep appreciation for classic hard rock gleaned from cruising through his father's record collection at an early age, 21 year old McGarvey has a sense of musical class which belies his youth. Rather than mining the SRV style which many young blues players are prone to these days, it's more Jimmy Page, Alvin Lee and the previously mentioned Bonamassa that he's akin to. Blending influences such as past masters Freddie King, Hendrix, ZZ Top and Cream alongside 70's styled riff rock, this incredibly talented guitarist has the goods and then some. - amazon.com

SCORPIONS - Bad For Good:
The Very Best Of Scorpions (2002)

Three decades in, The Scorpions were still touring in the year 2002 in support of BAD FOR GOOD: THE VERY BEST OF SCORPIONS, an 18-track set drawn from the band's '80s heyday and more low-key '90s output. Benefiting from the solid chemistry between rhythm guitarist/founding member Rudolph Schenker and high-flying lead guitarist Mathias Jabs, along with Klaus Meine's distinctive vocals out front, The Scorpions racked up an impressive canon during an era when heavy metal ruled the roost. Their most durable cuts were helmed by longtime producer Dieter Dierks, including the scorching anthem "Rock You Like A Hurricane," the soaring "No One Like You," the thunderous "Blackout," and the air-guitar-inducing "Big City Nights." An ability to deliver relatively wide-ranging material always put The Scorpions a notch above your average hard-rock outfit. When they weren't penning memorable power ballads like "Still Loving You," or reflecting on their first visit to New York City's then-decadent 42nd Street ("The Zoo"), The Scorps were credibly covering The Who for a charity album ("Can't Explain"). Most impressive is the global smash "Wind Of Change," a moving song of brotherhood written at a time when The Berlin Wall and The Iron Curtain were falling. 1, 2.

EMMYLOU HARRIS - Cimarron (1981)

01. Rose Of Cimarron
02. Spanish Is A Loving Tongue
03. If I Needed You
04. Another Lonesome Morning
05. The Last Cheater's Waltz
06. Born To Run Listen
07. The Price You Pay
08. Son Of A Rotten Gambler
09. Tennessee Waltz
10. Tennessee Rose
11. Colors Of Your Heart

That Cimarron, Emmylou Harris' ninth regular album, was assembled largely from recording sessions held for her previous couple of records is no necessary reflection on its quality. In fact, Cimarron was a typical effort for Harris, presenting her usual mix of country favorites, songs borrowed from the pop/rock arena, and singer/songwriter discoveries. Most prominent among the last category was Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You," released as a single three months ahead of the LP. From the pop mainstream, Harris borrowed Poco's "Rose of Cimarron" and Bruce Springsteen's "The Price You Pay." The recent T.G. Sheppard country number one hit "The Last Cheater's Waltz" and "Tennessee Waltz," best remembered for Patti Page's pop hit, were given respectful readings. And there was a lovely arrangement of the traditional ballad "Spanish Is a Loving Tongue." But the most memorable songs on the album were its two other country Top Tens, Karen Brooks and Hank DeVito's "Tennessee Rose" and Paul Kennerley's "Born to Run." On the whole, the album maintained the high standard Harris had set with her previous releases, and it deserved its 1982 Grammy nomination for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female. Though it matched the success of recent Harris LPs on the country charts, hitting the Top Ten and remaining listed for more than nine months, it did not enjoy as great a pop crossover sale and became Harris' first regular album since her 1975 breakthrough not to go gold. This was more indicative of the overall decline in country's crossover success than of any deficiency of the album itself; nevertheless, Harris' commercial success had crested. - All Music Guide

JOHN LENNON - Roots (1975)

The rarest album in John Lennon's solo canon, Roots was originally conceived in settlement of a copyright case lodged against the singer by publisher Morris Levy, following Lennon's use of a Chuck Berry lyric in the Beatles' "Come Together." Lennon agreed to record three songs published by Levy as part of his next album, and conceived a collection of covers paying tribute to his own 1950s roots -- the hijacked Berry number, "You Can't Catch Me," amusingly, among them. The project was delayed following the abandonment of the original recording sessions with producer Phil Spector, but Lennon finally presented Levy with a 15-song reference tape of the recordings in late 1974. Just weeks later, in February 1975, Levy's Adam VIII label began running television commercials promoting Roots, a mail-order album subtitled, indeed, John Lennon Sings the Great Rock & Roll Hits. Capitol, Lennon's regular label, immediately issued their own revised version of the same LP, Rock 'n' Roll, simultaneously initiating legal action against Adam VIII. Roots was withdrawn and, following three years of litigation, all unsold copies of the LP were delivered to Lennon (presumably for destruction) in 1977. Among fans and collectors, however, there is no question as to which version of the album is superior. Not only does Roots feature substantially different, and much rawer, mixes of the Rock 'n' Roll material, it also includes two songs omitted from the Capitol set -- a tremendous version of "Be My Baby" and a shimmering "Angel Baby." Both have since been released on sundry posthumous Lennon releases, but you really cannot beat hearing them in context. ~ All Music Guide

After futzing around Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia, for a few years, Heart finally secured a record deal in 1976. It wasn't with Epic or Capitol (which they would later sign with), but with a tiny Canadian label called Mushroom. The resulting album, "Dreamboat Annie", was an impressive hard-rock debut. "Crazy on You," which spotlighted the piercing vocals of singer Ann Wilson and the chunky guitar bluster of her sister Nancy, entered the Top 40, and the more mystical "Magic Man" climbed to No. 9. Dreamboat Annie also exposed a more vulnerable side of the band: The title track, for example, was an easy-listening, harmony-laden folk song replete with banjo plucks. Heart's 1976 album, DREAMBOAT ANNIE, is easily one of the '70s best rock debuts. Led by two sisters, singer Ann and guitarist Nancy Wilson, who combined the mystical folk of Joni Mitchell with the heavy metal stomp of Led Zeppelin, the album spawned several hits that have become classic rock radio staples over the years.

THE DOORS - Box Set (1997)

"Box Set" is a four disc compilation of both new and old material. The first three discs consist mostly of demos, live and unreleased tracks, while the fourth disc features the band's hand-picked favorites from the band's previously released albums. Though they've been out of commission for decades, The Doors have a continuing influence on the development of rock & roll, as this four disc set of mostly unreleased material reminds us. In the sixties, they provided a West Coast alternative to the decadent, urban visions of the Velvet Underground and the Stooges. Jim Morrison's position as rock Bacchus was the stuff of prime rock mythology, providing the blueprint for countless self-styled enfants terrible in the '70s. His Rimbaud-with-leather-pants lyrics were arguably a precedent-setter for the likes of punk grandparents Richard Hell and Patti Smith. The band's combination of psychedelic, jazz and classical influences created a unique musical tapestry. Doors fans both rabid and casual will find plenty of reasons to be cheerful here. Live tracks, studio outtakes, and other rarities provide a unique glimpse into the legacy of a band whose fire burned out far too soon. The fourth disc is a testament to the staying power of the band's catalogue. It consists of favorites from The Doors recorded canon, handpicked by John Densmore, Robbie Krieger and Ray Manzarek. Don't miss this chance to get a fresh perspective on a ground-breaking band. Links protected with LinkSave.in

SAVOY BROWN
- A Step Further (1969)

01. Made Up My Mind
02. Waiting In The Bamboo Grove
03. Life's One Act Play
04. I'm Tired/Where Am I
05. Savoy Brown Boogie Medley (Live):
- Feel So Good
- Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On
- Little Queenie
- Purple Haze

With Kim Simmonds and Chris Youlden combining their talents in Savoy Brown's strongest configuration, 1969's A Step Further kept the band in the blues-rock spotlight after the release of their successful Blue Matter album. While A Step Further may not be as strong as the band's former release, all five tracks do a good job at maintaining their spirited blues shuffle. Plenty of horn work snles up to Simmonds' guitar playing and Youlden's singing is especially hearty on "Made up My Mind" and "I'm Tired." The first four tracks are bona fide Brown movers, but they can't compete with the 20-plus minutes of "Savoy Brown Boogie," one of the group's best examples of their guitar playing prowess and a wonderful finale to the album. This lineup saw the release of Raw Sienna before Lonesome Dave Peverett stepped up to the microphone for Looking In upon the departure of Youlden, but the new arrangement was short lived, as not long after three other members exited to form Foghat. As part of Savoy Brown's Chris Youlden days, A Step Further should be heard alongside Getting to the Point, Blue Matter, and Raw Sienna, as it's an integral part of the band's formative boogie blues years. ~ All Music Guide
