Allman is best remembered for his brief but influential tenure in the band he helped co-found, as well as his inspired slide guitar and improvisational skills. Besides his work with The Allman Brothers Band, Allman led an established session musician life, lending his skills to the likes of King Curtis, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, and Herbie Mann. He also had a major role on the 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and the Dominos. Allman died in 1971 at the age of twenty-four after enduring a motorcycle accident that crushed several internal organs.
In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named Allman as number two on their list of the greatest guitarists of all time, trailing only Jimi Hendrix. 1, 2, 3.

Talkin' 23. I Shot The Sheriff 24. Bend Down Low (Bonus Track)
Originally released in February 1991, this album combines material from several different sources to trace the development of Bob Marley & the Wailers between October 1973 and September 1975. The bulk of the disc comes from a 1973 radio concert performed before a handful of listeners at the Record Plant recording studio in San Francisco and broadcast by KSAN-FM. The original album contained seven songs from this performance, while the 2002 reissue adds three more to complete the show. The songs had been featured on the band's albums Catch a Fire and Burnin'. The outfit who played them was technically still the Wailers, since Peter Tosh was still with them (and sang lead on his own compositions, "You Can't Blame the Youth" and "Stop That Train"), although Bunny Livingston had declined to tour and been replaced by Joe Higgs. By 1974, when the group assembled to record their next album, Natty Dread, Tosh and Livingston had quit, and the band was reorganized as Bob Marley & the Wailers. From those sessions come alternate performances of "Talkin' Blues" and "Bend Down Low," as well as an outtake, "Am-a-Do." In July 1975, the band played two shows at the Lyceum in London that would break them in the U.K., when recordings from the performances were issued as the album Live!. Here, a previously unreleased version of "I Shot the Sheriff" from the first concert is featured. (Maybe the reason it wasn't used on Live! was the irritating announcer who proclaims, "a trenchtown experience.") Finally, the musical tracks are interspersed with excerpts from an interview with Marley conducted in September 1975. While these spoken fragments provide a flavor of Marley's conversation, his heavy patois is very difficult for non-Jamaicans to understand. Still, these are valuable odds and ends for the Bob Marley fan. ~ All Music Guide 1, 2.

"1200 Curfews" is a double live album recorded on the Swamp Ophelia tour from 1994 to 1995, covering the duo's best loved songs as well as some inspired covers of classics from Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell. And while this is obviously directed at the Indigo Girls' insatiable cult following, even casual fans will find the album engaging since the live performances are often more spirited and direct than the studio versions. 1, 2, 3, 4.

"S o l o F l y t e s" is a compilation of solo efforts from surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as one track Steve Gaines recorded prior to joining the band. After the tragic plane crash that effectively ended Lynyrd Skynyrd's original run, the bandmembers got back into music during the early '80s via various solo projects and collaborations. 1999's "Solo Flytes" collects highlights from the Rossington-Collins Band and the Artimus Pyle Band. An added bonus is an early recording from their late guitarist Steve Gaines--the outstanding "One in the Sun." Guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins kept the tough southern rock of Skynyrd in tact with their union in the late '70's/early '80s, as evidenced by such highlights as the acapella "Pine Box," the album-opening "Prime Time," and an electrifying live recording of "Don't Misunderstand Me." + -

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL
- The Concert (1980)

Originally released in 1980 as The Royal Albert Hall Concert but quickly retitled when the label discovered the show it captures was recorded in California at the Oakland Coliseum on January 31, 1970, The Concert is as simple as its name. The album simply captures Creedence Clearwater Revival at the height of their powers, when they were the most popular American rock & roll band. They released three albums in 1969, all of which went into the Top 10. They had three number two singles that year ("Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Green River") and one number three single ("Down on the Corner"). They were simply a phenomenon and this record shows why. It's not as good as a compilation of hit singles; CCR were the rare excellent live band whose studio recordings were as ferocious as their stage work, and those were better detailed, too. Still, it's a pretty terrific little record, since the band is in fine form, tearing through the hits and such album favorites as "Tombstone Shadow," "Don't Look Now," "Born on the Bayou," "The Midnight Special," and "Keep on Chooglin'." Only hardcore fans really need to pick up this record and they might not even spin it all that often. But when they do, they'll wind up satisfied. - All Music Guide *

Along with Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever is often seen as the core of jazz fusion music in the 1970s. "Return To Forever: The Anthology" is an anthology of the 1973 to 1976 years of Return to Forever. Newly remixed and remastered from the original master tapes by Mick Guzauski at Mad Hatter Studios. Stompin’ Room Only, part of this collection, is the long rumored and highly anticipated album of live material recorded between 1974 and 1976. Recorded in London, Manchester (during their only European tour), in Milwaukee, and at Charlie Daniels’ annual "Volunteer Jam" in Murfreesboro during the years 1974-1976, the album was originally prepared for release in 1977 by producer Paul Hornsby and included the original lineup. In an unusual series of events, the album’s release was first delayed by Capricorn Records and, ultimately, never released, as the master tapes could not be found for more than a quarter century. They were recently discovered in pristine condition and that long-awaited album, the virtual "holy grail" of jam band music is now available. + -

Anyone with even a passing fancy of American roots music or blues is certainly no stranger to Kid Ramos. Throughout most of the ‘80s, Ramos was a member of what is often considered to be the classic lineup of the James Harman Band featuring Willie J. Campbell, Stephen T. Hodges and the late Hollywood Fats, a group that performed up and down the California coastline and opened for such diverse musical acts as X, Oingo Boingo, The Blasters and The Plimsouls. Ramos left the band in ‘88 to begin a family, holding down a day job delivering bottled water for several years before eventually being coaxed back into music full time by Kim Wilson in ’95 as a full fledged member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds for seven years. Ramos released three successful solo recordings on Evidence Records beginning in ’99 and currently plays an active role as a featured guitarist in the critically acclaimed all-star revue, The Mannish Boys. Los Fabulocos simmers up a spicy and tantalizing blend of traditional Spanish and Americana music featuring norteno, conjunto, blues, zydeco and rock ‘n’ roll delivered with sincerity, honesty and passion. It’s a special brand of roots oriented music that shares much in common with the south of the border styling of such pioneering acts as Los Lobos, Clifton Chenier, Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez, the Hacienda Brothers, and Doug Sahm’s Texas Tornados. “We mix it up,” Ramos explains. “We play songs in Spanish, then we’ll do a Fats Domino song, then we’ll play a blues, and then we’ll do a Buck Owens or Johnny Cash song. People look and go, ‘What?’ Then, all of a sudden, they just start dancing and having smiles on their faces.” *

Trying to find something that is not the same old thing in blues music can give you the blues. "Down to My Bone" is different, though. Zola Moon takes a chance here by having herself accompanied by only a single acoustic guitarist on each of the sixteen cuts: Michael Carter, Burke Wallace, or Kim Allison. The opening cut is 'Time Is On My Side,' made famous by The Rolling Stones, but the emphasis is on traditional material like "St. James Infirmary" and traditional sounding songs written by Moon. The guitarists are all excellent, but the thing that keeps things interesting is Moon's voice. Her voice is strong and powerful, but she resists the temptation to show it off. Instead, she uses emotion to make each song tell a story. Being the blues, most of the songs are sad. Moon makes the pleading of her 'Help Me' and the pain of 'These Steel Bars' come through. She even gives new life to Willie Nelson's often done "Night Life". This CD gets to the roots of the blues with just vocals and guitar "right down to the bones". + -

13. I've Loved You All Over The World
14. Annie
After working his atmospheric magic on Bob Dylan (TIME OUT OF MIND) and Emmylou Harris (WRECKING BALL), producer Daniel Lanois takes on another American original: Willie Nelson. The result is an album that's at once timeless and up-to-the minute. Lanois brings Willie's instantly recognizable voice front and center, but underscores his acoustic guitar picking with complex percussion and drums, as well as organ and harmonica. The Lanois-written "The Maker" is the most fleshed-out instrumentally, and sounds like an outtake from Harris' WRECKING BALL. Harris herself appears on 11 of the 14 songs, handling the difficult task of singing harmony with Willie's distinctive around-the-beat style phrasing. Half the songs were written by Willie in the sixties, when his career was on the rise but his personal life was in ruins. The material is almost uniformly despairing, with titles like "I've Just Destroyed The World" and "Darkness on the Face of the Earth." The newer songs, like "Everywhere I Go," have a Spanish lilt, perhaps reflecting the fact that the album was recorded in a converted California theater that once specialized in Mexican movies. While TEATRO may be case of teaching an old dog new tricks, Willie's certainly an apt pupil. "Teatro" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video. - CDuniverse *

RORY GALLAGHER
- The Essential Rory Gallagher (2008)
As if fated to live the blues he studied so deeply, Rory Gallagher was beautiful, talented and doomed. He was just 47 years old when died after a liver transplant surgery in 1995. But in a career that spanned from 1969 until his death, Gallagher compiled one hell of a legacy. The Irish guitarist was a prolific music maker, recording 17 albums under his own name, and two studio albums with his early blues-rock trio, Taste. He also appeared on two seminal blues recordings: Muddy Waters' The London Sessions in 1972, and Albert King Live in 1977." Ballyshannon blues man Gallagher was a true people’s hero, loved by superstars and the common man alike. In Ireland during the dark sectarian days of the 70s, Rory’s shows were healing ceremonies, uniting warring communities in glorious love and abandon. This terrific mix of live and recorded gems is the perfect way of introducing a new generation to a man who died in 1995, but whose musical soul will outlast every one of us – and sectarian bigots.

There is no shortage of Rolling Stones compilations on the market. Some, like the three-disc "Singles Collection", span great stretches of the band's career, while others, like "Big Hits" focus on a specific era. "Made In The Shade" was originally released in June 1975 as a precursor to the Stones' 1975 American tour. It covers the choice cuts from the bands first four albums of the seventies, "Sticky Fingers", "Exile On Main St.", "Goats Head Soup" and "It's Only Rock N Roll". It has only been available briefly on CD in the mid Eighties and is long sought after by collectors. This satisfying blast of '70s Stones goodness was re-released in 2005 on Virgin with elegant new packaging and beautifully remastered sound. *

Starship was a band created by the settlement of a lawsuit. Notwithstanding this curious beginning, the group went on to a series of hits in the mid-'80s, including the chart-toppers "We Built This City," "Sara," and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" in a polished, mainstream pop/rock style before splitting up in the early '90s. Starship was the remaining sextet of musicians that, with Paul Kantner, had made up Jefferson Starship until the rhythm guitarist/singer's exit from that band in June 1984. Kantner, a founding member of Jefferson Airplane, the precursor to Jefferson Starship, had also helped found Jefferson Starship in 1974. Ten years later, Kantner decried the band's tilt toward commercial rock and decided that it was time for the group to dissolve. His bandmates disagreed, and Kantner sued over money and the ownership of the band's name in October 1984. The suit was settled in March 1985, resulting in a cash payment to Kantner and the agreement that the name "Jefferson Starship" would be retired, while the band would change its name to simply Starship (with that name owned by singer Grace Slick and manager Bill Thompson). "Greatest Hits (Ten Years and Change 1979-1991)" is a compilation album released in 1991 when Starship ended its recording contract with RCA. The album contains two new tracks, "Don't Lose Any Sleep" and "Good Heart." "Good Heart" was released as a single and hit #81 on the Billboard charts. *

11. Trouble (duet with Delbert McClinton)
One of the most celebrated country-folk performers of her day, singer/songwriter Iris Dement was born in rural Paragould, AR, the youngest of 14 children. At the age of three, her devoutly religious family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music; during her teenaged years, however, she was first exposed to country, folk, and R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell. Upon graduating high school, she relocated to Kansas City to attend college. After a series of jobs waitressing and typing, Dement first began composing songs at the age of 25. Honing her skills at open-mic nights, in 1988 she moved to Nashville, where she contacted producer Jim Rooney, who helped her land a record contract. Dement did not make her recording debut until 1992, when her independent label offering, Infamous Angel, won almost universal acclaim thanks to her pure, evocative vocal style and spare, heartfelt songcraft. Despite a complete lack of support from country radio, the record's word-of-mouth praise earned her a deal with Warner Bros., which reissued Infamous Angel in 1993 as well as its follow-up, 1994's stunning My Life. Her third LP, 1996's eclectic The Way I Should, marked a dramatic change not only in its more rock-influenced sound but also in its subject matter; where Dement's prior work was introspective and deeply personal, The Way I Should was fiercely political, tackling topics like sexual abuse, religion, government policy, and Vietnam. In 1999, she collaborated with country man John Prine on his album, In Spite of Ourselves. Dement recorded four duets with Prine that earned her a Grammy nod the following year. *

King opened his blues club on Beale Street in Memphis. For two and a half years, The Famous Unknowns held forth at B.B. King's accompanying all manner of blues greats who passed through. 11. Just Enough Rope (bilingual version)
During the mid-'90s, Rick Trevino emerged as one of the first popular Hispanic singers in country music since the mid-'70s, when Freddy Fender and Johnny Rodriguez were having hits. Beginning with "She Can't Say I Didn't Cry" in 1994, Trevino racked up several hits over the next few years with his Garth Brooks-inspired blend of new country and album rock. In 1993, he released his first album, the Spanish-language Dos Mundos. It was accompanied by a single release of "Just Enough Rope," which was released in English, Spanish, and a bilingual version; it was the first traditional country single to be released in both Spanish and English. The English version was a moderate hit, reaching number 44. In 1994, Trevino released an eponymous album, which featured English versions of most of the songs from Dos Mundos, plus a few new cuts. Rick Trevino became a hit, producing the Top 40 "Honky Tonk Crowd" and the Top Ten singles "She Can't Say I Didn't Cry" and "Doctor Time." Trevino's second album, Looking for the Light, was released in 1995; it was accompanied by a Spanish version. Like its predecessor, Looking for the Light was a hit, albeit not as big as the debut -- it only spawned one Top 40 hit, the number six "Bobbie Ann Mason." Learning as You Go, Trevino's third album, was released in 1996; Changing in Your Eyes followed two years later, and Mi Son was released in spring 2001. ~ All Music Guide *

14. Restless - Carl Perkins, Tom Petty
15. A Mile Out of Memphis - Perkins, Simon
16. My Old Friend - McCartney, Perkins
17. Blue Suede Shoes - John Lennon
This album is a curious mixture; it isn't really a Carl Perkins album per se' as it is an all-star tribute album with some of the big name guests actually getting to interface with their hero. Both John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix appear via the grave and the tape vaults, contributing their own versions of "Blue Suede Shoes" to the proceedings. And Carl works in tandem with live guests Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Bono, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, John Fogerty, and Paul Simon in right fine fashion. But the bottom line is that the real star of the show is Perkins himself, just playing and singing in a most masterful and rockin' way. If stars of this magnitude are tipping their hat, Carl shows on this waxing that their idolatry is well placed. ~ All Music Guide + -

It can be argued that the Stray Cats were both ahead of their time and behind the times. Mixing '50s nostalgia with punk rebellion helped the band establish a unique niche in American music during the '80s. Go Cat Go! A Tribute to Stray Cats showcases a wild collection of today's most popular psychobilly bands - Reel Big Fish, Koffin Kats, Batmobile, The Roketz, Mad Sin and more - truly an international effort meant to pay tribute to a band that left a genuine mark on the world of rock 'n' roll: the Stray Cats! A powerhouse lineup of artists pay tribute to the best neo-rockabilly band of all time...and it's done with slick style and a bad attitude. Destined to be the psychobilly record of 2006. *

Etta James followed her two deeply jazzy mid-'90s albums of torch songs with Love's Been Rough on Me, a flirtation with Nashville writers. On Life, Love & the Blues, she returns to her blues and soul repertoire, enlivening even the hoariest of tunes ("Spoonful," a gender-flopped "Hoochie Coochie Gal") with her growl. The tinges of funk underpinning "Born Under a Bad Sign" are given full room to stretch on a cover of Sly Stone's "If You Want Me to Stay," and James nearly swipes "The Love You Save May Be Your Own," one of Joe Tex's great preaching ballads, from the master. + -

She is especially known for her down-home crafting of songs and her connection to musicians including Emmylou Harris, and the Dixie Chicks, who have played with her onstage as well as performing cover songs of Griffin's work, exposing many of her compositions to mainstream pop and country music audiences outside Griffin's folk music circle of fans. She is also a recipient of the Americana Music Association's highest honor as "Artist of the Year" in 2007, as well as taking home the award for best album for Children Running Through. On January 30, 2003, Patty Griffin played her final tour date for the "1000 Kisses" album at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Not since his debut, Entrance, had Edgar Winter appeared in a solo capacity. Winter is decidedly laid-back on tracks such as "Hello Mellow Feelin'" and "Tell Me in a Whisper," which serve as the finest of the nine tracks here. Winter puts on his party hat once again with the rocking "Out of Control," the final track on a pretty nice little rock & roll document. ~ All Music Guide *

Janis Joplin was born at St. Mary Hospital in Port Arthur, Texas, the daughter of Seth Ward Joplin and Dorothy Bonita East. Her father was an engineer at Texaco. Janis had two younger siblings, Michael and Laura. As a teenager, she befriended a group of outcasts, including Jim Langdon and Grant Lyons, the latter of whom played her the blues for the first time. She began listening to musicians such as Leadbelly, Bessie Smith, Odetta, and Big Mama Thornton and singing in the local choir. While at Thomas Jefferson High School, she was mostly shunned. Among her high school classmates was another individual destined for stardom: future college and NFL coach Jimmy Johnson. In a 1992 Sports Illustrated profile of his career, Johnson claimed that he gave Janis the high school nickname of "beat weeds." Primarily a painter, it was in high school that she first began singing blues and folk music with friends. Joplin graduated from high school in 1960 and attended the University of Texas in Austin, though she never attained a degree. One persistent story is of her being nominated in a Fraternity contest "The Ugliest Man on Campus." Cultivating a rebellious manner that could be viewed as "liberated" — the women's liberation movement was still in its infancy at this time — Joplin styled herself in part after her female blues heroines, and in part after the beat poets. She left Texas for San Francisco in 1963, lived in North Beach and in Haight-Ashbury as well as Corte Madera. Around this time her drug use began to increase, and she acquired a reputation as a "speed freak" and occasional heroin user. She also used other intoxicants. She was a heavy drinker throughout her career, and her trademark beverage was Southern Comfort. Janis Joplin on stage.Like many other female singers of the era, Joplin's feisty public image was at odds with her real personality. The book Love, Janis, written by her sister, has done much to further the reassessment of her life and work and reveals the private Joplin to have been a highly intelligent, articulate, shy and sensitive woman who was devoted to her family. + -

Rick Derringer is an American guitarist, vocalist, and entertainer. He is perhaps best known for the songs "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" and "Real American". Derringer was also "Weird Al" Yankovic's producer and additional guitarist for five years, before rhythm guitarist Jim West became sole guitarist. Derringer is known for his hard-rocking live shows, which don't necessarily translate well to recordings, or lend themselves to much originality. As he neared age 50 in the 1990s, however, he had mellowed, and this showed when he began recording again for Shrapnel Records in 1993 with the albums Back to the Blues and Electra Blues. Years of fair to average rock and adult contemporary albums followed, but in 2002 Derringer did an about-face and tried his hands at jazz with the adventurous Free Ride. *

The Electric Flag, formed in 1967, was a blues rock soul group led by guitarist Mike Bloomfield, keyboardist Barry Goldberg, and bassist Harvey Brooks. Bloomfield formed Electric Flag after his stint with The Butterfield Blues Band. The band reached its peak with the 1968 release, A Long Time Comin', a fusion of rock, jazz, and R&B styles that charted well in the Billboard Magazine Pop Albums listings. This "live" performance by the Electric Flag sounds like a bootleg recording; probably made in 1968, with Mike Bloomfield, Buddy Miles, and perhaps the rest of the "original" line-up (Goldberg, Gravenites, Brooks, et al.); it has been packaged under titles such as "Greatest Hits of ..." and so on; "I Should Have Left Her" is a version of "Killin" Floor" from their studio lp, "A Long time Comin'," and two other songs are live renditions of songs from that studio lp; several of the songs, sung by Miles, are what may be called r&b ballads; it's hard to tell if all of the songs are live, though; while the sound quality is only fair, it's great to hear Bloomfield, et al. live - although there's not a lot of Bloomfield letting loose; assuming that this is a bootleg, be aware that the "bootlegger" was in close proximity to the keyboardist (probably Barry Goldberg); nevertheless, it's a wonderful, rare snapshot of another '60s band with a lot of potential, but which crashed and burned instead. *

Don Van Vliet is an American musician and visual artist, best known by the pseudonym Captain Beefheart. His musical work was mainly conducted with a rotating assembly of musicians called The Magic Band, which was active from the mid-1960s through to the early 1980s. Van Vliet was chiefly a singer and harmonica player, occasionally playing noisy, untrained free jazz-influenced saxophone and keyboards. His compositions are characterized by their odd mixtures of shifting time signatures and by their surreal lyrics, while Van Vliet himself is noted for his dictatorial approach to his musicians and for his enigmatic relationship with the public. This is a hand-numbered limited edition CD comprising live and studio recordings from various years in the 1970s. The sound quality is excellent! + -

TOMMY EMMANUEL - Center Stage (2008)
Tommy Emmanuel is an Australian and one of the best guitarist in the world, best known for his fingerpicking style and energetic performances. This is acoustic music in your face!" the emcee says by way of introducing the live recording that follows on this double-disc set from Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel, the 53-year-old virtuoso who clearly knows how to wring every last bit of dynamic energy and volume out of his battered six-string. While old-time traditionalists will be green with envy at the effortless ease with which he blows through songs like Merle Travis' "Nine Pound Hammer" and Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia on My Mind," they will scoff at the crazy percussive sound effects he wrangles out of the strings and body in a rousing rave-up of "House of the Rising Sun" with harmonica player and stage guest Bob Littell. And when they hit the point in the CD where Emmanuel creates underwater-sounding feedback weirdness on "Initiation," they'll probably throw a conniption, because people just aren't supposed to make whale songs with just an acoustic guitar and a few effects circuits – noises that come darn near blowing one's speakers if the volume has been jacked up so as not to miss Emmanuel's subtle fingerpicking glories earlier in the set. 1, 2, 3

Mahogany Rush was to Jimi Hendrix what jazz saxophonists Sonny Stitt and Ernie Henry were to Charlie Parker-loving disciples, but not outright clones. Without question, Hendrix was a major influence on the hard rock power trio; you could hear it in leader Frank Marino's singing as well as his electric guitar playing. But ultimately, Mahogany Rush sounded like itself. One of the best studio albums that Mahogany recorded in the 1970s was Strange Universe, a hard rock/heavy metal classic that is as melodic as it is forceful. As aggressively as Mahogany rocks on gems like "Tryin' Anyway," "Dancing Anyway" and "Dear Music," this 1975 LP never fails to be musical. One hears overtones of progressive rock, psychedelic rock and jazz-rock fusion on much of the material, and Mahogany's lyrics aren't the typical boy-meets-girl fare-in fact, the threesome explores gothic fantasy themes on "Land of 1000 Nights," "Tales of the Spanish Warrior" and other cuts. There are no dull moments on Strange Universe, which points to the fact that Mahogany Rush was among the finest hard rock/metal bands of the 1970s. ~ All Music Guide*

Reckless Kelly is an Austin, Texas based Alternative country / Roots Rock band. Their name was inspired by Australian bank robber Ned Kelly. Reckless Kelly is back on the rock n' roll stage with "Bulletproof", their most ambitious and venomous album to date. Rollicking guitars and a relentlessly aggressive rhythm section pound out political statements alongside epic road anthems and ragged love songs. As always, Reckless Kelly brings its indomitable Texas spirit to the new album, resulting in what promises to be the band's most immediate offering of their career. Recorded at Willie Nelson's legendary Pedernales Studios in Lake Travis, Texas, "Bulletproof" is a call to arms, an opening salvo in Reckless Kelly's campaign to spread the nearly religious dedication of its Texas followers to fans all across the USA. *

THE BEATLES - Anthology 1 (1995)
Anthology 1 is a compilation album by The Beatles and the first of a three-volume collection. It was released in November 1995 (tying in with a televised special - The Beatles Anthology - that aired in three parts) and includes rarities and alternative tracks from the period 1958-1964, including their days as "The Quarrymen", through the Decca auditions to the album Beatles for Sale. Also included on this album was the Jeff Lynne produced track "Free as a Bird", which was billed as the first "new" Beatles song in 25 years. Anthology 1 is of historical interest to Beatles fans for, among other things, including performances by past Beatles Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. Sutcliffe, the band's original bass player who quit the group and was replaced on bass by McCartney, is featured on three tracks: "Hallelujah, I Love Her So", "You'll Be Mine", and "Cayenne". Best, who was the band's drummer until shortly after their successful 1962 audition for EMI, is featured on tracks 10-12, 15-19, 21 and 22 on disc one. Track 22 is the original June 1962 EMI audition recording of "Love Me Do", which, after Ringo Starr replaced Best, would be re-recorded by the group four months later for their first single. The album was a large success throughout the world. It was the first Beatles album to officially enter the Billboard 200 album chart straight at number 1 with 855,473 copies sold, making the 27th largest one-week sales in the Soundscan history, succeeding Fresh Horses by Garth Brooks. In its second week Anthology 1 sold 453,000 copies and maintained the top spot. This was repeated the following week, with 435,000 copies sold. In its fourth week the same quantity was sold, but the album fell to #2 behind Mariah Carey's Daydream. In the following week, the album fell to #3 but with 601,000 sales. Anthology 1 was certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA after six weeks in the U.S. market. In all, the album spent 29 weeks inside the Billboard 200, reached cumulative sales of 3,639,000 (scans as April 2001) and was certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA. In the UK, reaction was similar, but the album only reached #2, behind Robson & Jerome's eponymous album. In Australia, the album spent two weeks at number-one in December 1995. 1, 2, 3

THE BEATLES - Anthology 2 (1996)
The Beatles' Anthology 2 is a compilation album released in March 1996 by Apple Records as part of The Beatles Anthology series. The album includes rarities, live, and alternative tracks from the sessions for Help! through the sessions for Magical Mystery Tour and early 1968 sessions before the band travelled to India. The album featured the second "new" Beatle-track, "Real Love", a re-worked song originally by John Lennon. Anthology 2 sold well, as did its predecessor – Anthology 1. In the United States it debuted at #1, selling 442,000 copies the first week. The following week, the album fell to #2, selling 201,000 copies, being replaced by Alanis Morissette's blockbuster Jagged Little Pill. The album managed to spend 2 more weeks on the Top 10 (at #4 and then #8), remaining for 22 consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 and then re-entering the charts twice, marking a #96 reach during the Christmas season of 1996. In all, the album spent 37 weeks on the charts (8 more than Anthology 1) and sold 1,707,000 copies (confirmed by RIAA), being certified 2x Platinum. In the UK, the success was similar. Anthology 1 debuted at #2 album when released in 1995, but its successor managed to reach #1, where it remained for one week. The album spent a total of 13 weeks on the UK Album Chart. 1, 2, 3

THE BEATLES - Anthology 3 (1996)
The Beatles' Anthology 3 was released in October 1996, and includes rarities and alternative tracks from the final two years of their career as a band ranging from the initial sessions for the The Beatles (The White Album) through to the last sessions for Let It Be and Abbey Road in later 1969. On the cover, an updated picture of Klaus Voorman can be seen in George's hair in the Revolver cover section. A third John Lennon solo demo entitled "Now and Then", patched up by the three surviving Beatles, was supposed to be released on the album, but was decided against because a buzzing noise could not be removed from the recording. 1, 2, 3, 4

- I Dream Of Jeannie

Perhaps the most outstanding folk album of the 1970s, this collection represents Baez's blossoming from a girlish folk icon into a mature interpreter of folk music. The title track (and, to a much lesser degree, "Dida" and "Children and All That Jazz") showcases her songwriting, but the intimate spin she puts on the music of others is what makes this the remarkable work it is. On Jackson Browne's "Fountain of Sorrow," Dylan's "Simple Twist of Fate" and John Prine's "Hello in There," the purity of Baez's clear soprano (deeper and mellower than on her early albums) expresses the gentle pains of nostalgia and what-might-have-been. The medley of "Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair/Danny Boy" reminds us that no matter what other directions she moves in, Baez will always be a masterful singer of traditional folk music. 1, 2, 3

EMMYLOU HARRIS - Songbird:
Rare Tracks And Forgotten Gems (2007)
Emmylou Harris, godmother of the Americana movement, is a phenomenon for any number of reasons, one of which is that she has has managed to conduct more than four decades of her remarkable career without a single misstep. While Harris has always been committed to honoring the roots of old-school, traditional country, she also expanded the music beyond its conservative lyrics and narrow melodic structures without abandoning its core themes of enduring love, family, and prideful sense of place. Throughout, she interpreted and wrote songs of integrity and emotional depth and resonance, surrounding her keening soprano with a Who's Who of players and collaborators, including Rodney Crowell, the McGarrigle Sisters, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Daniel Lanois, and Mark Knopfler. This unusual 4-CD compilation isn't a greatest-hits package, but rather a gathering of Harris's personal favorites, most of which have never appeared on other collections. Some of the most compelling tracks are special collaborations ("Jordan," with Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash), previously unreleased live, studio, and demo tracks (the folky "Falling in a Deep Hole," circa 1970), and contributions to tribute projects (Townes Van Zandt's chilling "Snake Song"). Harris's reedy voice is one of the most empathetic instruments in all of popular music, and perhaps no other female performer of the genre has been able to capture the desperate, paralyzing sense of longing and loneliness as well as this greatly revered singer. That may be a red flag of warning for the Prozac generation, but this deeply satisfying set stands as a benchmark of 40 years of artistry, as well as an uncommonly soulful illumination of the human condition.

Procol Harum is a British rock band, formed in the 1960s, who built an important foundation for what would become progressive rock, or perhaps more closely, symphonic rock. They are best known for their 1967 hit single "A Whiter Shade of Pale", which is not only a regular item on classic singles polls, but is also regarded as a seminal track in the development of pop music and particularly progressive rock music. Procol Harum have had a devoted following throughout their career; their music, although being principally noted for its classical influence, also embraces the blues and pure pop music. Procol Harum is arguably the most successful "accidental" group creation - that is, a band originally assembled to take advantage of the success of a record created in the studio - in the history of progressive rock. With "A Whiter Shade of Pale" a monster hit right out of the box, the band evolved from a studio ensemble into a successful live act, their music built around an eclectic mix of blues-based rock riffs and grand classical themes. With singer/pianist Gary Brooker and lyricist Keith Reid providing the band's entire repertory, their music evolved in decidedly linear fashion, the only major surprises coming from the periodic lineup changes that added a new instrumental voice to the proceedings. At their most accessible, as on "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Conquistador," they were one of the most popular of progressive rock bands, their singles outselling all rivals, and their most ambitious album tracks still have a strong following. flac 1, 2, 3, 4

Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple in April 1975 after his final show with the band in Paris on April 7 that year. Here now is the complete show in glorious top notch soundboard quality. Savour Blackmore's final moments onstage with Deep Purple and witness the fierce playing he would later develop even further during his first few years with Rainbow. His explosive solo in Stormbringer on this album is worth its price alone. Blackmore's final concert with Deep Purple Mk 3 is at last issued in full on this digitally remixed release culled from the original multi-tracks. Taped in April 1975, it features nine tracks including songs from 'Burn' & 'Stormbringer' performed before an enthusiastic Parisian crowd, the songs heightened by an emotional performance by Blackmore himself, with some great guitar work. This double CD has been remixed (with three performances never issued before) from 16 track masters. 1, 2, 3

With a line-up featuring legendary artists Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty, the Traveling Wilburys were a one-of-a-kind musical phenomenon. The all-star configuration came about when they convened at a Southern California studio in 1988 to record a b-side for a Harrison’s single. They had such a rockin’ good time cutting “Handle With Care” that they decided to release it under the Wilburys moniker, and to continue the collaboration with an album’s worth of songs. Their camaraderie is heard in every groove on Rhino’s remastered reissue of their now-historic, GRAMMY-winning debut "Volume 1". @flac files, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

Ship of Memories, a collection of rarities from Focus' catalog, is somewhat more diverse than most of the band's other releases. Starting off with "P's March," a track rooted in the style of Focus' debut album In and Out of Focus, Ship of Memories gradually works its way through the band's many phases to the Mother Focus styled "Crackers." The album ends on a superb song, the U.S. version of "Hocus Pocus." For Europeans, this addition to Ship of Memories ("Hocus Pocus" U.S. was never on the LP version, but was later added to the CD release) comes as an absolute delight. Not only is the song a verified rarity on the continent, but it is also vastly different from the U.K. recording. Akkermans' guitar work, Van Leer's yodeling, and Pierre Van Der Linden's drumming are all given a new lease of life by the inclusion of this track. Despite the songwriting quality not being of the highest caliber, sparks of genius pop up at various places. Collectors will be well-gratified by Ship of Memories, while casual listeners will find enough enjoyable material to merit its purchase. ~ All Music Guide *

Lou Reed has always dabbled in contrasts, so it comes as no surprise that the follow-up to his darkly serious concept album "Berlin" was a commercially oriented, good-time rock & roll fest. "Rock'n'Roll Animal" is a live set that finds Reed stretching out on some of his best-loved Velvet Underground tunes with the help of his crack touring band at the time. Though the songs are somewhat given to stylistic excess, the overall sound is streamlined, accessible, and visceral. The twin guitar attack of Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter help transform Velvet classics like "White Light White Heat," "Sweet Jane," and "Rock 'N' Roll" into pomp/glam-rock [is pomp the word meant here? not pop?] showpieces, complete with extended arrangements, elaborate instrumental sections, and of course, plenty of long guitar solos. Those who cling to the image of Reed as punk godfather might be mystified by his transformation here into Rock God. But the heart of rock & roll beats in the chest of all of Reed's chameleon-like personalities, and "Rock'n'Roll Animal" amplifies the sound of that heart to great effect. *

Here is a surprise pairing: Roy Rogers, one of the greatest slide guitarists in the world, John Lee Hooker producer and sometime band member, and Shana Morrison, Van Morrison's daughter and new emerging songwriter talent. Together they have released an excellent album. Sassy-voiced Shana's jazzy blues delivery and Roy's country-edged vocals work warmly together - and those arrangement, Wow! The darkly laid-back opening track 'Molly O & Dog Boy' with it's steel guitar touches and acoustic percussion leads you into an album which demonstrates the incredible versatility of Rogers' guitar and confirm what many know - that Roy is a superb producer. Previous albums from Roy can flay you alive with their slide riffs. Here he is never bludgeoning, never subservient, just scarily perfect in his discretion and appropriateness. Tight musicianship: drums and percussion from Jimmy Sanchez, accordion and keyboards from Phil Aalberg, bass from Scoop McGuire, Dana Pandey's tabla and Robert Powell's pedal steel, underpin a great collection of songs and a must-have album. *

IAN ANDERSON - Rupi's Dance (2003)
320
It's a popular notion that modern Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson solo albums are increasingly indistinguishable. That argument may hold water from the narrowest of musical perspectives, but it's hard to imagine the obtusely grandiose Tull tackling any of the personally scaled, delicately detailed themes that Anderson focuses on here with his familiar folk-au-baroque muse--and the sparest of world music seasonings. Ranging from the title track's celebration of a new kitten's scamperings to the passing of a trusted feline friend ("Old Black Cat") to frank, introspective musings about his own insecurities ("Lost in Crowds," "Two Short Planks"), it's an album that evokes an old, if slightly eccentric, friend musing about his life and times. Indeed it's hard not to be charmed by Anderson's gentle, often self-deprecating wit as he variously lusts after an international CNN anchor ("Not Ralitsa Vassileva") and a decent cup of joe ("Calliandra Shade--The Cappuccino Song") or pays homage to a respected Italian flautist and makes urinary tract puns on the brisk instrumentals, "Griminelli's Lament" and "Eurology," respectively. A breeze of an album that virtually begs the listener to take life at least half as seriously as he does. - amazon.com

FREDDY KING - Blues Guitar Hero
- The Influential Early Sessions (1993)
320
Freddie King was an original, the most gifted electric blues guitarist of the post-Chicago southside blues sound...In contrast to his peers he was the consummate musician. Freddie had an awesome stage presence. No one walked away disappointed from his larger than life performances. Freddie King, the one and only "Texas Cannonball", fused the open-string sound of Texas blues guitar and the raw, screaming tones of West Side Chicago blues. As a guitarist, he is best known for his extremely aggressive picking attack (using a thumbpick and steel fingerpick), his phenomenal collection of signature riffs, and one of the most wicked vibratos the planet has ever seen. His guitar playing was matched in intensity only by his voice.

FREDDY KING - Blues Guitar Hero
- Volume 2 - More Influental (2002)
320
This is something of a sequel to the 1993 Ace compilation of early King sides titled Blues Guitar Hero: The Influential Early Sessions, though it took Ace nearly a decade to unleash the companion volume. All of the 24 tracks were recorded between 1961 and 1966, though some of the songs weren't released until after 1966, in a few cases not for decades; indeed, four alternate takes make their first appearance here. All of King's chart records occurred in 1961, and all were included on the prior Blues Guitar Hero: The Influential Early Sessions, so this couldn't qualify as the first-choice early King; there's no "Hide Away" or "San-Ho-Zay" here. On a musical level, though, this isn't much different in nature or quality than what you'll find on the earlier anthology. Split between vocals and instrumentals, it's top-notch R&B-blues-rock & roll crossover with stinging guitar and soulful vocals, even if the similarity of some of the songs might turn off non-aficionados. Among the cooler cuts are 1964's "Now I've Got a Woman," with its riveting minor-keyed groove; the wailing slowie "Someday After Awhile (You'll Be Sorry)," covered by the Peter Green lineup of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers; and the faint exotica of "Bossa Nova Blues." Lonnie Mack adds some nice texture on rhythm guitar on a few of the sides of the latest vintage. ~ All Music Guide

LED ZEPPELIN - How The West Was Won (2003)
320
"How the West Was Won" is a triple live album by English rock group Led Zeppelin, released by Atlantic Records on CD on May 27, 2003. These original performances are from the band's 1972 concert tour of the United States, recorded at the L.A. Forum on June 25, 1972 and Long Beach Arena on June 27, 1972. Guitarist Jimmy Page considers Led Zeppelin at this point to have been at their artistic peak, as is mentioned in the album's liner notes. For many years, live recordings of these two shows only circulated in the form of bootlegs, and even then only certain audience recordings were available to fans and collectors (for example, Burn Like a Candle). Though several soundboard recordings of Led Zeppelin concerts were circulated amongst fans after having been stolen from Page's personal archive some time in the 1980s, no soundboards of the 1972 Long Beach or LA Forum shows were taken, meaning the release of How the West Was Won was the first chance fans had of hearing the soundboard versions of these concerts. The songs from the two shows underwent some extensive editing and audio engineering by Page at Sarm West Studios in London before being released on the album. A comprehensive analysis of live tracks edits for the album can be found at The Garden Tapes. Some songs which were played at the concerts, such as "Communication Breakdown" and a rare version of "Louie Louie" from the June 25 show, were left off How the West Was Won. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 chart for the week ending June 14, 2003 at number 1, with sales of 154,000 copies. It remained on the chart for 16 weeks. It was certified gold and platinum record awards by the RIAA on June 30, 2003. The album became the first Led Zeppelin album since 1979's In Through the Out Door to reach the #1 position.

PINK FLOYD - Echoes: The Best Of Pink Floyd (2001)
320
Through their long history, Pink Floyd moved through psychedelia, prog-rock, space-rock, and more, emerging as pioneers in all of those styles. This two-disc compilation takes on the formidable task of creating a definitive Floyd collection. Though there's no chronological running order to give a sense of the group's development, there are plenty of key tracks from all the eras of Pink Floyd's career. We're given a healthy dose of material from the band's psychedelic '60s period, when they were spearheaded by the ultimate acid-damaged genius Syd Barrett (the loopy "Bike," the otherworldly "Astronomy Domine"). The most overtly progressive tendencies of '70s Floyd are aired on the glorious epic "Echoes," whose suite-like construction shows off both the band's technical facility and orchestration skills. Naturally, there are some cuts from the band's watershed album DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, one of the best-selling LPs of all time (the gospel-tinged "The Great Gig in the Sky," the near-funky capitalist plaint "Money"). Hardcore Floyd fans might object to the number of songs from the post-Roger Waters era, but even these less-celebrated tunes work in the overall historical context. While it's easy to quibble about the absence of various Floyd favorites (no "Interstellar Overdrive?"), there's so much crucial music on this collection that it's impossible to come away from it without a strong sense of what Pink Floyd such an important band.

JOE BONAMASSA - A New Day Yesterday Live (2001)

Something of an odd release, A New Day Yesterday Live documents the final date of a 60-day jaunt during blues guitar prodigy Joe Bonamassa's 2001 tour in support of his major-label debut bearing the same title, and (this is the odd part), released just a few months earlier. Just why his record company felt the need for it, then, is up for grabs (more promotion...thinking Bonamassa's virtuosity came across stronger in a live setting...who knows?), but what's clear is that the young guitarist's trio lacked nothing in terms of on-stage presence and performing tightness as compared to what was heard on said studio album. Their kinetic reinventions of oft-overlooked '70s rock classics such as Free's "Walk in My Shadows" and Jethro Tull's "A New Day Yesterday" instantly distinguish Bonamassa from teenage blues competitors such as the overly Stevie Ray Vaughan-reliant Kenny Wayne Shepherd or the more purist (and technically less dazzling) Jonny Lang, and his better-conceived originals ("Colour & Shape," the wonderful "Miss You Hate You") stand up under any circumstance -- but again, so what? Didn't listeners just buy their studio versions a few months ago? Yes, there's the additional benefit of extended jamming and incendiary guitar soloing to expand upon their themes, but suffice to say that this set need only be sought out by Bonamassa fanatics, or, in the event that they've yet to hear the studio version, first timers, too -- why not? ~ All Music Guide

THE BLACK KEYS - Attack & Release (2008)
320
Of all the two-piece rock bands (Dresden Dolls, The White Stripes, The Kills, John & Jehn) out there making a royal racket, The Black Keys are by far the least affected by the last three decades of popular music, and evolution. Even more so than Jack & Meg. Which makes you check the album credits twice and then seek a second opinion--produced by celebrated uber-producer, superstar DJ and one half of Gnarls Barkley, the ubiquitous and really quite modern Danger Mouse?! No, your eyes do not deceive you, but thankfully neither do your ears. He may have brought a discipline and expensive sheen to Attack & Release, the riffing is buffed up real good, but this is essentially the same band that continues to live less of a life and more a Jimi Hendrix Experience. If there is a change it's that for the first time their foot is teased off the accelerator, with "Lies", "Remember When (Side A)" and "Oceans & Streams" loosening their shoulders and playing a more chilled brand of dusty sunset southern blues, adding in keys and new layers of texture (is that really a flute on "Same Old Thing"?!). There's still plenty of chance, on the massive Zeppelin-esque "Strange Times" and "Remember When (Side B)" for instance, to leave a boot mark though. More release than attack this time around, but the key still fits. - amazon

JOHN FOGERTY - Centerfield (1985)
320
When John Fogerty made his comeback in 1985, after ten years of abscense, "Centerfield" shot to #1 with a bullet, not on the "old, uncool rock records" list, but on the Billboard 200.That was an obvious triumph for Fogerty, and a testament to his immense popularity that he managed to survive ten years (an eternity in the record business) almost without being heard of, only to return in such a manner. Who else besides The Beatles, The Eagles and Led Zeppelin could possibly hope for anything like that? The funny thing is that the album itself is good, but not truely great ("Blue Moon Swamp" is amore… much better record). Light-hearted pop-rockers dominate "Centerfield", and there is absolutely nothing on here as good as his best CCR-compositions. But second-rate Fogerty album tracks are still better than most rock bands' best singles, and even though there are no real classics on here, the quality of the songs is consistently high, with "The Old Man Down The Road", "Big Train (from Memphis)" and "Rock n' Roll Girls" being the best.Go buy it. MEDICINE HEAD - The Best Of Medicine Head (2001)
320
Formed in Stafford, England in 1968, the British blues duo Medicine Head comprised vocalist/multi-instrumentalist John Fiddler and Peter Hope-Evans, who played the harmonica and jew's harp. Upon their formation at art college, Medicine Head became a staple of the local club circuit, eventually recording a demo which found its way to influential BBC radio personality John Peel, who began championing the track "His Guiding Hand." Other DJs soon followed suit, and quickly the duo was on the brink of stardom. With Peel's continued assistance, Medicine Head entered the studio to begin recording their 1970 debut LP New Bottles Old Medicine. Their focus shifted from basic blues to a more intricate sound for 1971's Heavy on the Drum, produced by former Yardbird Keith Relf; after scoring a surprise hit with the single "(And the) Pictures in the Sky," Hope-Evans left the group, and was replaced by Relf and drummer John Davies for 1972's The Dark Side of the Moon. Hope-Evans rejoined prior to 1973's One and One Is One, which launched the title track to the Top Three of the U.K. singles chart. Now a five-piece also including guitarist Roger Saunders, onetime Family drummer Rob Townsend and bassist George Ford, Medicine Head notched two more hit singles, "Rising Sun" and "Slip and Slide," but 1974's Thru' a Five failed to chart, and the group began to disintegrate. Only Fiddler and Hope-Evans remained by the time of 1976's Two Man Band, and after one last single, "Me and Suzy Hit the Floor," Medicine Head officially disbanded. Fiddler later resurfaced in the British Lions, followed by a stint in Box of Frogs and finally a solo career, while Hope-Evans contributed to the Pete Townshend albums Empty Glass and White City. ~ All Music Guide

ROY BUCHANAN - Messiah On Guitar (2007)
320
Rare Live!
Roy Buchanan was “the world’s best unknown guitarist” and one of America’s most soulful masters of the instrument. Gary Moore paid tribute to Buchanan on his “After The War” album, covering Roy’s signature tune: “The Messiah Will Come Again”. Buchannan’s sound is simply unique: heartbreaking, searing solos with a trademark shimmering tone and a mixture of snarls, wails and squeals that distinguish him as a wizard of the instrument. The guitar wizard Roy Buchanan is in incendiary form on this live set, which features astonishing re-workings of rock and R&B standards such as "Green Onions" and "Peter Gunn," as well as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix with "Hey Joe" and "Foxy Lady," both of the latter providing an opportunity to compare the two guitar maestros' styles. Buchanan's signature "The Messiah Will Come Again," first recorded for his 1972 debut album, is transformed here into a mesmerizing blend of gospel, blues, psychedelia, and disturbing anguish. It's as powerful a guitar instrumental as you'll ever hear.

RANDY NEWMAN - Harps And Angels (2008)
VBR
By the release of 2008's HARPS AND ANGELS, Randy Newman was firmly entrenched in the pantheon of classic American songwriters. Always slightly out of step with the times, Newman's finest work is marked by a broad, timeless sense of American pop music that encompasses everything from George Gershwin and Jelly Roll Morton to Bob Dylan and the Beach Boys. Yet it is Newman's sardonic wit and razor-sharp sense of satire that makes his view of America as a whole so compelling. On HARPS AND ANGELS, both elements of Newman's artistry are on display with a richness they haven't had in years. The album's opening (title) track finds the grizzled songsmith contemplating mortality and the Lord over a mellow, gently swinging melody, while "A Few Words in Defense of Country," the album's centerpiece, takes the complex sympathies displayed for the antiquated norms of the Deep South on 1974's GOOD OLD BOYS and applies it to 21st-century American barbarism. Newman's a sly political fox who loves to ruffle feathers, but when he's singing about loneliness and romantic longing, as on "Losing You" and "Feels Like Home," the sentiments are never maudlin and always true. Randy Newman is a national treasure, and as enigmatic, frustrating, and ultimately rewarding as the nation he so brilliantly skewers. HARPS AND ANGELS is proof that he still has quite a bit to say. - CDUNIVERSE

SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON II - Bye Bye Sonny (2007)
320
If legend grows out of mystery, then Rice Miller could be its poster boy, since even his name is an uncertainty (he was most likely born as Alec or Alex Miller), and given that he assumed the name of another harmonica player, thus becoming the second Sonny Boy Williamson, he seemed to approach life like it was a hall of mirrors. What keeps him from being a completely self-invented illusion is that he was a remarkable musician, and the music he recorded is as solid as bedrock, an impressive counterweight to the vague and watery details that pass for his personal biography. Like the first Williamson, he was a harmonica player, but he really sounded nothing like his adopted namesake, favoring a light, soaring, almost horn-like sound on the instrument. He was also a natural songwriter, and his blues-based compositions show a sharp attention to detail unusual in a genre built largely on clichT and a handful of repeated patterns. He was also a larger than life showman, and he knew a good thing when he ran into it, so when he participated in the American Folk & Blues Festival package in Europe in 1963 and saw the enthusiastic reception afforded old American bluesmen there, he decided to stick around for awhile and ended up fronting numerous gigs with various young white British blues bands, each of which he charmed, confused and schooled. As providence would have it, a fair amount of these gigs were caught on tape, including the two sets with the Yardbirds (December 1963 at the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond and February 1964 at the Birmingham Town Hall in Birmingham), and a set with the Animals (December 1963 at the Club A Go-Go in Newcastle) that are collected on the first disc of this two-disc set. Truthfully, these live shows are more historically interesting than anything else, being merely passable bar band blues, even if they feature a fascinatingly charismatic if rather drunken Williamson at the helm. The second disc here consists of a studio session Williamson did with Jimmy Page and Brian Auger in January of 1965, and thanks to the presence of Alan Skidmore and Joe Harriott on tenor and alto saxophone respectively, the whole affair has an edgy and jazzy jump blues feel that allows Williamson to stretch out a bit from the strict blues format. As fate would have it, the Page/Auger session was to be the last chapter in Williamson's recorded legacy, as the harpist died four months later in Helena, Arkansas. All of the tracks on these two discs have been released several times under various titles and on assorted labels, and aside from the experimental freshness of the Page/Auger material, it all amounts to historical ephemera, probably essential only for dedicated collectors. As the last chapter in the murky, mythical and fascinating career of one Rice Miller, though, these recordings are worth their weight in gold. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide

GUTHRIE GOVAN - Erotic Cakes (2006)
320
Guthrie Govan is a guitarist known for his work with the bands Asia (2001-2006), GPS, The Young Punx and The Fellowship as well as Erotic Cakes (a vehicle for his own music). He is a noted guitar teacher through his work with the U.K. magazine Guitar Techniques, Guildford’s Academy of Contemporary Music and currently the Brighton Institute of Modern Music. He is also a former winner of Guitarist Magazine's "Guitarist of the Year" competition. - wiki
Govan’s debut solo album, Erotic Cakes, was released through Cornford Records in August 2006. In the album's sleeve notes, Govan states the album is named after an episode of The Simpsons; he also explains that when playing live, the band is billed as ‘Erotic Cakes’ rather than simply Guthrie Govan. In addition to bass by Govan’s brother Seth and drumming by Pete Riley, the album features guitar solos by Richie Kotzen and Bumblefoot on ‘Ner Ner’ and ‘Rhode Island Shred’ respectively. Seth Govan and Pete Riley also complete the Erotic Cakes live band. Several of the tracks on the album existed in various incarnations previously. Notably, versions of ‘Waves’ and ‘Rhode Island Shred’ appeared on the compilation Guitar on the Edge, Vol 1. no.4 (Legato Records, 1993); his inclusion on the compilation was organised by Mike Varney's brother, Mark. Furthermore a version of his ‘Guitarist of the Year’ winning piece, ‘Wonderful Slippery Thing’ appears on the album. While this is his first album, Govan had been collaborating with drummer Pete Riley on the music since the mid-1990s. The Erotic Cakes band line up, with the addition of saxophonist Zak Barrett, also forms jazz-fusion band The Fellowship. The band plays at the Bassment club in Chelmsford, Essex every Thursday night and has done so for several years.

STONE THE CROWS & MAGGIE BELL
"Stone The Crows", shouted legendary manager Peter Grant, when he first heard this splendid young Scottish band roaring into action. Although it was the Londoner's favourite Cockney expression, he wasn't a man to be easily impressed. After all, he was the manager of Led Zeppelin, the most successful heavy rock band in history. Yet there was something earthy and appealing about the Crows that excited his enthusiasm and support. Rock fans too were enthralled by the band, founded by guitarist Leslie Harvey and featuring the passionate vocal style of dynamic singer Maggie Bell. Their blues-based rock was imbued with that extra power and authentic flavour that sprang from their tough Glasgowegian roots. Every new group expects to conquer the world, and Stone The Crows were no exception. But Maggie Bell and Leslie Harvey had both been working long and hard before their latest venture finally took shape, way back in 1969. They deserved the success that finally came their way. As teenagers Maggie and Leslie had worked together in a local group. Maggie (born Glasgow, January 12, 1945) came from a musical family who supported her ambitions. Leslie was the younger brother of singer Alex Harvey who led the Sensational Alex Harvey Band (SAHB). Maggie was just 17 years old when she started singing professionally in the city’s Locarno Ballroom. Maggie soon found herself earning S70 a week singing pop hits of the day under the spotlights. It was a much better life than earning a pittance as a window dresser. "It was big bucks!" remembers Maggie. . MORE >>> http://www.alexgitlin.com/stc.htm

Newly remastered sound and expanded packaging including lyrics of the Two CD set reissue of the 1994 album, recorded live A Night in San Francisco by Van Morrison. In contrast to these commercially-successful but not always critically acclaimed albums, the 1994 live double album, A Night in San Francisco was a "tour-de-force", clearly demonstrating Morrison's talents and his influences in equal measure and reached #8 on the UK charts. The Rolling Stone magazine review states the album stands as: "the culmination of a career's worth of soul-searching that finds Morrison's eyes turned toward heaven and his feet planted firmly on the ground." - amazon.com

THE ANIMALS - The E.P. Collection (1989)
320
This 20-track CD, running just under an hour, is a good bargain. The real value behind these See For Miles EP collections is that, particularly where British invasion bands are concerned, they allow the listener to truly track the group's progress and the real advancement of their sound. The Animals, in their years on EMI, only released two LPs but got out five EPs in the same period. This is prime material, a good balance between the group's blues and R&B influences on the one hand and producer Mickie Most's more pop-oriented leanings, and it shows just how powerful this band was, whatever kind of music they chose to play. Their key hits represented here, including "House of the Rising Sun," "Baby Let Me Take You Home," "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," and "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place," surrounded by very strong tracks which show the members gaining confidence and extending themselves musically, month by month. The only drawback for the more casual listener is the focus of the collection, which is limited to the band's stay on EMI, which lasted barely two years, if that, so later hits like "It's My Life" are not present. Everything here does appear on the label's Complete Animals double-CD set, but that's where the 1999 reissue of this disc is important -- The EP Collection offers state of the art digital sound, better than that on EMI's late-'80s set, and it also easily runs circles around ABKCO Records' Best of the Animals. The instruments all have startling presence, and Eric Burdon's voice practically booms out on "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place." The notes are very informative as well, explaining how the formative Animals managed to cross paths with (and later diverge paths from) producer Mickie Most. ~ All Music Guide

Brandishing Blues vocals rooted in the Texas Soul tradition, Dede Priest is powerful, soulful, and emotionally intense, delivering a style that is sweetly reminiscent of the "old school", yet new, unique, and all her own.
"Are there any blues singers left who are capable of surprising? Oh, yes! Dede Priest from Austin, Texas is one. She has a voice with a delicious and rough edge and writes excellent songs, mixing blues, funk, gospel, and jazz in a modern way that totally passes all known clichés. Priest is accompanied by musicians who share the same thoughts about the blues and easily know how to dodge predictability. Everything on this record is in balance." - Revolver Magazine, 2008

THE BEACH BOYS - Surfin' USA (1963)
320
"Surfin' USA" is the second album released by The Beach Boys and was released in early 1963. This was the group's second album to be credited with production from Capitol's Nick Venet, Capitol Records' representative for Artists and Repertoire. Surfin' USA is notable for giving The Beach Boys their first widespread success with its title track, and for Brian Wilson's increasing prowess in songwriting, as well as vocal arrangement. The fuller-sounding vocals were achieved using double tracking, creating The Beach Boys' own unique sound. As with Surfin' Safari, some have speculated that it was not Nick Venet, the officially-listed producer, but rather Brian, who produced Surfin' USA. What is also interesting about this particular album is that five of its twelve tracks are surf instrumentals, "Stoked" being Brian Wilson's first of many instrumental songs he'd composed over the years for The Beach Boys. In addition, "Surf Jam" marks the first time Carl Wilson, aged 16 at the time, received a songwriting credit.
