Eric Burdon's second and final album with WAR, this two LP psychedelic soul tour de force is perhaps the greatest testament to the band New Music Express would acclaim as the "best live band...ever seen." A sprawling work filled with free-form rap, improvised jazz vamps, and tight, funky rhythmic workouts, The Black Man's Burdon presents Eric Burdon and WAR at the height of their partnership, a spontaneous funky musical force that could go anywhere at anytime. Highlights include the 13-minute-plus Stones-influenced "Paint It Black Medley;" the soulful, jazzy "Pretty Colors;" and the gospel timepiece "They Can't Take Away Our Music." It was a two-record set, with the most distinguishing feature being its front and back cover art. 1, 2, 3.
