B.B.KING - The Best Of B.B.King (1973)
320
True, this 1973 vintage best-of album covers a ridiculously slim wedge of time in the blues king's long career. Yet this period was quite significant, for it marks the crest of B.B. King's initial entry into the pop music mass market - and this album surfs succinctly, if not comprehensively, over the high points of his turn-of-the-decade winning streak. There's a potent slice of King's triumphant Live at Cook County - one of his sassiest "How Blue Can You Get?" on records - the huge hit "The Thrill Is Gone" extracts from his surprisingly pleasing early excursions into pop/rock territory on In London and Indianola Mississippi Seeds, and plenty of flavorful electric blues ("Sweet Sixteen," "Why I Sing the Blues") at full length. There are some quirks - "Caldonia" is shortened because one of the unnamed participants on the session demanded the cut, and the "compatible stereo/quad" sound on the LP has some details drastically mixed down when it's played back in ordinary stereo. Most curious of all is the last track, where King plunks out "Nobody Loves Me but My Mother" on a tack piano and then his closing words are converted into a weird, gradually slowed-down, echotized electronic blur that settles into a creepy locked-end groove. ~ All Music Guide

CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG
- Deja Vu Live (2008)
320
Based on the title, it's hard not to think that Déjŕ Vu Live finds Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young reaching back into their past, perhaps even performing their classic 1970 album in its entirety. That's not true, although there is an album that comes close to being performed in its entirety here, and that's Neil Young's 2006 political manifesto Living with War, a controversial record that Young supported by re-teaming with CSN for a tour -- a tour that was documented in the Young-directed feature documentary Déjŕ Vu Live. Got that? It's a series of circumstances a bit too confusing for music that's so straightforward, as the Living with War tour was as direct as the album itself. Direct, yes, but it also was a bit softer than the record, as it was bathed in the warm glow of the reunion of Young with CSN, whose presence helps Young's songs seem elegiac instead of bitter. There's no disguising what this is: this is a set of aging hippies lamenting the way things are now by connecting to who they were back then, reuniting for the new songs and mixing up relevant older ones -- including, yes, the warhorses "For What It's Worth" and "Teach Your Children" -- to provide a bridge to the past. CSNY don't run from their age, as they can't escape it: some voices have grown gravelly, the harmonies are shakier, there isn't quite as much muscle to the guitar. But by not running from these signs of age, CSNY wind up with a live album that has a bit of resonance, as when it's contrasted with the rangy, restless 4 Way Street, it's hard not to be a little moved and marvel that the bandmembers feel so comfortable here, especially considering their tortured history. This winds up being the overarching impression left by Déjŕ Vu Live, as despite the topicality of the set list, Déjŕ Vu Live feels curiously isolated; there may have been controversy on the tour, all chronicled on Young's film, but it doesn't feel engaged with the culture at large, which could be a side effect of the digital dislocation of the 21st century, or it could be a sign that CSNY are growing older and simply don't stir things up the way they did back then. But for those who are listening, their message has resonance -- and so does the music, as this live record winds up being a nice understated grace note to their tumultuous career. ~ All Music Guide

MARCIA BALL - Live! Down The Road (2005)
320
Marcia Ball, born on the Texas/Louisiana border, has long been a superb live performer, delivering her swampy blend of zydeco, blues and gritty R&B with all the force of a Saturday night locomotive, and her many fans have been crying for a live album for years, and now, finally, she's delivered it. Recorded in September 2004 at the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico, CA as part of the Sierra Center Stage series broadcast on PBS, Marcia Ball Live: Down the Road also serves as a kind of greatest-hits set, with Ball and her gritty, horn-driven road band blasting through favorites that span her career. Make no mistake, Ball comes to party, and from the blistering stomp of "Big Shot" that opens the album, she hardly lets up, and even when she does ease it down, as she does on her wonderful version of Randy Newman's gorgeous "Louisiana 1927," you can still feel the heat of the swamp between the lines. Her zydeco-fueled original, "That's Enough of That Stuff," is a clear highlight, as is "It Hurts to Be in Love," which features a guest duet vocal from Angela Strehli. Ball's road band is tested and solid, providing a gutsy backdrop to her driving piano lines and steamrolling vocals. With the good-time, sassy energy on display here, Down the Road serves as an ideal introduction to Marcia Ball in her truest environment, live on-stage, and for her longtime fans, it is an album they have long been anticipating. Country-folk singer/songwriter Fred J. Eaglesmith was one of nine children born to a farming family in rural southern Ontario. Often employing his difficult upbringing as raw material for his heartland narratives, he issued his self-titled debut LP in 1980. He recorded infrequently throughout the remainder of the decade, releasing only two more albums, "The Boy That Just Went Wrong" and "Indiana Road". However, Eaglesmith gradually became an underground favorite in his native Canada, thanks largely to a relentless touring schedule in tandem with bassist Ralph Schipper and mandolinist Willie P. Bennett. In 1991, he released the double live collection "There Ain't No Easy Road", followed two years later by "Things Is Changin". Another live set, Paradise Motel, appeared in 1994, and in 1995 Eaglesmith returned with Drive-In Movie. - amazon.com

ETTA JAMES - Love Songs (2001)
320
Drawn almost entirely from her Argo/Chess recordings of the '60s (although there are some cuts from the early '70s), "Love Songs" is a fine selection of romantic music from one of the greatest blues singers of her generation. There are hits here, highlighted by "At Last," but mood overrules chart position, so these 14 songs wind up setting a seductive atmosphere and maintaining it from beginning to end. It's not essential for collectors, although some songs aren't all that easy to come by elsewhere. Instead, it's an album for casual fans, those who like James' style, especially when it's presented in a romantic setting. For these listeners, it's very worthwhile. ~ All Music Guide

ROD STEWART - The Great American Songbook:
Volume 1 - It Had To Be You... (2002)
320
Rod Stewart's mellowing years have neatly coincided with a commitment to smart ballad choices and a generally warmer musical persona. Rod the Mod liberated at last? Like many a pop singer, Stewart returns here to what's become generally known as the Great American Songbook, that evergreen body of mid-20th century songcraft that continues to inspire singers across oceans and generations. It's said that Stewart has been vocalizing many of these songs in private for years, and given the warm, human scale of most of the performances here, it's not hard to believe. Producer Phil Ramone's spare, unobtrusive arrangements inspire the singer to some of his most subtle and rewarding performances in years. Stewart's slightly weary vocal tack handsomely suggests the smoke, booze, and aching heart that lie at the best of these songs. Such back-to-the-future efforts can often sound like a last career gasp; here, they seem a refreshing breath of fresh air.

Volume 2 - As Time Goes By... (2003)
320
At least Rod Stewart is consistent. Long accused by critics of selling his considerable interpretative talents short and playing it safe for the trappings of fame, Stewart revisits the font of his latest career revival here. But while 2002's It Had To Be You at least turned on the novelty of hearing raspy Rod the Mod tackle a slate of American pop standards with a boozy, world-weary tone that sometimes reinforced the originals' intent with trans-generational flair, the British rock icon unfortunately reverted to form a year later on this 14-track sequel. Set against the laconic, cocktail-friendly productions of vets Richard Perry and Phil Ramone, Stewart's performances seem strangely detached throughout. Even when offered the chance at some real human interaction on a pair of ill-conceived duets with Cher (who at least attempts to bring some dramatic flair to "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered") and Queen Latifah (whose recent turn in Chicago informs the title track), Stewart seems almost blissfully unaware of their presence. These are songs that virtually demand to be acted out, not phoned in. Brilliant vocal performances often reinforce the notion of "the singer, not the song;" here that old adage sounds more like a suggestion of where to place the blame for this album's disappointments.

Volume 3 - Stardust... (2004)
320
It's a little hard to take Rod Stewart seriously when, on the first track of this third installment in his Great American Songbook series, he sings ruefully about his love life being "lean" ("Embraceable You"). But otherwise, Stardust...Volume III is as note-for-note solid as its predecessors--a cozy-up-to-the-fire treat that's also a pleasant reminder of these songs' staying power. "S'Wonderful" settles on the ears winningly, and Stewart's scratchathon voice scalpels the cobwebs off of "Isn't It Romantic" in a way that compels the average listener to reconsider thinking it dopey. In addition, the parade of high-wattage pals recruited to pitch in continues here, resulting in a couple of must-hear combinations. Eric Clapton delivers a rather un-Clapton-like guitar solo on "Blue Moon" and Stevie Wonder blows harp like he means it on "What a Wonderful World," but it is the duets--"Baby It's Cold Outside" with the unsinkable Dolly Parton and "Manhattan" with the indomitable Bette Midler--that the dazzle most.

Volume 4 - Thanks For The Memory... (2005)
320
Accuse Rod Stewart of what you like--through the years he's been called a philanderer, a has-been, a pageant-ish progenitor of puff rock--but as he has consistently proved with his Great American Songbook series, the concept of dignity is not lost on him. There is a time, after all, for leaping across stages in leopard-print spandex while shamelessly parading an unparalleled gift for scratchy-voiced seduction, and he is past it. Past his prime is another thing. On this fourth installation of the Clive Davis-produced series, Stewart again makes excellent use of his rolodex: Diana Ross, whose affection for this material comes through as convincingly as her spike-haired partner's, cuddles up for opener "I've Got a Crush On You," Chaka Khan packs her bags but not her mighty vocals for "You Send Me," and Sir Elton shelves the recent balladeer's instincts for a rip-roaring run through "Makin' Whoopee." A handful of marquee instrumentalists also returned Rod's calls-- Dave Koz blows sax on "Nevertheless," and trumpeters Chris Botti and Roy Hargrove turn up the heat on "I Wish You Love" and "My One and Only Love" respectively. As on earlier discs, though, it's when Rod rules the spotlight alone that he can be most compelling: Cue up "My Funny Valentine" in the right frame of mind and you may never need to hear it sung by another. Retiring the satin shirts in favor of this material was the smartest move Stewart ever made.

WILLIE NELSON - Milk Cow Blues (2000)
320
Though he's best known as a country artist, Willie Nelson has always been bigger than that. He's recorded albums of everything from popular standards to guitar instrumentals with equal aplomb. So this blues album should come as no surprise to longtime fans, especially given the fact that the kind of sophisticated, urbane, Charles Brown-style blues he tackles on much of "Milk Cow Blues" was a key component of some of Nelson's early work. Willie's joined here by a bevy of guest artists; blues stars both new and old, including B.B. King and Susan Tedeschi. The lion's share of the cuts here are duets, where the seemingly egoless Nelson is happy to share the spotlight with his talented friends. For all the sparks those duets generate, however, its a tribute to the man's unique gifts that the most effective tracks turn out to be Willie's solo turns.
"Milk Cow Blues" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.

GARY MOORE - Victims Of The Future (1983)
320
Gary Moore might just be the greatest guitar hero America's never heard of, probably because only his recent blues recordings have benefited from proper distribution stateside. In fact, Moore has worn so many hats during his near 30-year career that the words eclectic and unfocused immediately come to mind. Victims of the Future arrived in the middle of the most consistent phase of his career - that of a heavy metal guitar slinger. Between the epic cold war-inspired title track and the massive riffing of "Murder in the Skies" (written about the Korean airliner shot own by Russian fighter jets), Moore assaults the listener with more guitar notes than appear in most careers. These are great songs though, and his powerful vocals are also very effective, especially on the hit ballad "Empty Rooms." ~ All Music Guide

XXXX XXXXXXXX - xxxx xxxx xxxxxxxx (August 2008)
320
I am bored

"xxxx xxxx xxxxxxxx" welcomes the discovery and the re-discovery of the legend, his music, and his artistry. With a distinguished music career that spans more than five decades, XXXX XXXXXXXX has returned to his longtime label home Capitol Records recording 10 new tracks for "xxxx xxxx xxxxxxxx". It’s a cover album, with him making several artist’s songs his own, such as Green Day, Foo Fighters, U2, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Velvet Underground, the Replacements, and more. It is a country album by definition, but in a way very few artists can, with this album he penetrates genre barriers and has made, IMO, the best country-related album since Johnny Cash’s American IV.

MIKE OLDFIELD - Earth Moving (1989)
320
"Earth Moving" is a record album, written by Mike Oldfield, released in 1989 and featuring Adrian Belew (King Crimson) singing lead vocals on 'Holy' & Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann's Earth Band) singing lead vocals on 'Runaway Son' & 'See The Light'. The album is made mostly with synthesizers, many synth parts not being played with keyboards at all. It is notable for being Oldfield's first album without at least one instrumental piece; each track is a more conventional pop song. The end track, despite appearing to be a lengthier piece, consists of two shorter songs of no apparent connection combined into one track, with a noticeable pause in between. According to Oldfield, the album was made with the full understanding of his recording company, which at the time was demanding he create more commercial material.

WHITESNAKE - 30th Anniversary Collection (2008)
320
Following hot on the heels of the UK Top 10 hit album “Good To Be Bad”, EMI release what is surely the most complete retrospective ‘Snake collection yet with three discs covering pretty much all the highlights from 1978’s “Snakebite” EP right up to the barnstorming “Best Years” from the new album. No less than 52 tracks, with all but the two SPV licensed numbers (the aforementioned “Best Years” and “If You Want Me”) labelled as undergoing a “2008 Digital Remaster”, it samples something from every Whitesnake release of course but also adds tracks from the “Coverdale/Page” project as well as his 2000 solo album “Into The Light”. Wisely though the sequencing has been given some thought and after so many years of hearing a track followed by another on albums I’m so familiar with, many songs get a new lease of life thanks to an unfamiliar running order. A roughly adhered to, although certainly not strict, chronological order works well too.
DISC 1 leads off with the immense “Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues“. Surely Coverdale’s signature tune, at least to those who are familiar with Whitesnake’s pre-”Slide It In” output, it sounds superb and makes for the perfect opener. “Gambler” stood out nicely too. An underrated song sandwiched between the early epic “Trouble” and the old favourite “Love Hunter” its an example of where the sequencing brings out something often overlooked.
01. Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues
02. Sweet Talker
03. Would I Lie To You

17. Take Me With You (Live)
+ -
DISC 2 starts by focusing on the breakthrough in the UK, opening with “Fool For Your Loving” (the original, NOT the Steve Vai butchered version) and “Don’t Break My Heart Again“. A couple of lesser lauded album tracks in the shape of “Judgement Day” and “Straight For The Heart” herald the MTV years and sound fresher today than the overplayed “Is This Love” does, whilst a live “Soldier Of Fortune” lifted from the “Starkers In Tokyo” set nicely recalls Coverdale’s beginnings as the new boy in Deep Purple MkIII. A nice touch, as with disc one, to include a few live tracks at the end of the disc rather than occasionally interspersed.
01. Fool For Your Loving
02. Don’t Break My Heart Again
03. Hit An’ Run
04. The Time Is Right For Love

16. Soldier Of Fortune (Live)
17. Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues (Live)

DISC 3 wheels out big guns like “Still Of The Night“, “Slow An’ Easy” and the 1987 reworking of “Here I Go Again” that provided the first (and only) US number one. Again credit goes to the compiler though as despite the disc mainly consisting of material from the three successful “American style” albums the likes of “Blindman” and “Ain’t Gonna Cry No More” appear; surely two of Coverdale’s finest vocal performances.

RICKIE LEE JONES - Duchess Of Coolsville:
An Anthology (2005)

Rickie Lee Jones' career ascent began after famed rock front man Lowell George recored her composition "Easy Money" for a Little Feat album. As an inimitable song stylist, she first made her indelible mark with the scat-flavored hist "Chuck E's In Love" from her acclaimed 1979 self-titled debut LP. Ever since, Jones has blazed an artististically idiosyncratic path on a long string of beautiful, adventurous, and personal albums. Her more-than-distinctive vocals encompass rock, jazz, blues, classic pop, folk, and R&B inflections...Textured with fluent wordplay and delivered with true heart, Rickie Lee's sound is one of the most authentic and original in contemporary music.

JOHNNY CASH
- American Recordings 1 - 5 (1994-2006)
American Recordings 1 (1994)
320
In 1994 Cash stunned the music world with this commanding collection of 13 solo acoustic performances that roll from gospel to cowboy to sarcastic folk. Minimalism had long been Cash's meal ticket, but this time around, producer Rick Rubin stripped it all away, recording the bulk of the record in Cash's cabin or his own living room (two cuts were captured live at the Viper Room in front of an emphatic audience). Cash offers five typically direct and vivid originals, but he also seizes control of songs by Kris Kristofferson, Nick Lowe, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Loudon Wainwright. Forty years after "Hey Porter," Cash delivers a pure, naked, and incredibly moving record that, dare we say, rivals the impact of his greatest achievements.

American Recordings 2 - Unchained (1996)
320
The first four songs on Unchained come from the songbooks of Beck, Don Gibson, Soundgarden, and Jimmie Rodgers. What might look like absurdly unsupportable eclecticism in other artists, of course, is pretty much standard stuff for Cash. Unchained is hardly standard, though; it's more like the best album he's made since his 1984 departure from Columbia Records. Not only is this a stack of songs perfectly and idiosyncratically suited to the man, they're given door-rattling backing treatment by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who prove as fitting for Cash's music as his own Tennessee Two was back in the day.

American Recordings 3 - Solitary Man (2000)
320
For younger generations of musicians, having their song cut by Johnny Cash must be a little like scaling the Washington Monument. On his third album for producer Rick Rubin's American label, Cash makes Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" sound like a companion classic to "I Walk the Line." He transforms U2's "One" into a sturdy testament of plainspoken faith, while he plumbs the netherworld of Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat" and Will Oldham's "I See a Darkness." Amid more familiar fare (including Neil Diamond's title track), the album's sing-along standout is the deadpan, down-and-out, talking blues of "Nobody." Cash's recent originals have the age-old purity of Appalachian music, while the traditional closing of "Wayfaring Stranger" offers bittersweet benediction. Merle Haggard, Sheryl Crow, and June Carter Cash provide vocal cameos.

American Recordings 4 - The Man Comes Around (2002)
320
On first thought, the idea of the Man in Black recording such covers as "Bridge over Troubled Water," "Danny Boy," and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" might seem odd, even for an artist who's been able to put his personal stamp on just about everything. But American IV: The Man Comes Around, which also draws on Cash's original songs as well as those by Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt"), Sting ("I Hung My Head"), and Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus"), may be one of the most autobiographical albums of the 70-year-old singer-songwriter's career. Nearly every tune seems chosen to afford the ailing giant of popular music a chance to reflect on his life, and look ahead to what's around the corner. From the opening track--Cash's own "The Man Comes Around," filled with frightening images of Armageddon--the album, produced by Rick Rubin, advances a quiet power and pathos, built around spare arrangements and unflinching honesty in performance and subject. In 15 songs, Cash moves through dark, haunted meditations on death and destruction, poignant farewells, testaments to everlasting love, and hopeful salutes to redemption. He sounds as if he means every word, his baritone-bass, frequently frayed and ravaged, taking on a weary beauty. By the time he gets to the Beatles' "In My Life," you'll very nearly cry. Go ahead. He sounds as if he's about to, too. Unforgettable.

American Recordings 5 - A Hundred Highways (2006)
320
The ethical questions surrounding this final album in the American Recordings series are as unavoidable as they are, ultimately, peripheral. While the vocal tracks were recorded in the months just prior to Johnny Cash's passing in September 2003, the arrangements weren't undertaken until two years later. And though producer Rick Rubin had become a trusted friend, the Man in Black wasn't around to approve or disapprove, let alone guide, the final sessions. However, if the pure power of these recordings doesn't quiet the skeptics, nothing will. With Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench and slide guitar session pro Smokey Hormel on board (all three of whom appear on earlier Cash albums), along with guitarists Matt Sweeney and Johnny Polansky, the sound is stately and acoustic, but rarely staid, even as the dynamics of earlier recordings in the series are absent. Instead, the songs have a measured, elegiac intensity, the sound of musicians choosing their notes carefully and making just the right choices.

STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN AND DOUBLE TROUBLE
- Live Alive (1986)
320
Most live blues recordings have a feeling of intimacy, as if the concerts took place in some out-of-the-way venue for an audience who not only know all the lyrics, but know the performers personally as well. Live Alive, in contrast, feels like a large-scale rock concert, an epic production full of grand gestures. But really, nothing suited Stevie Ray Vaughan's style better; everything, from the overall sound to the solos, feels big. The roar of the audience, especially for favorites like "Pride and Joy," "Cold Shot," and "Texas Flood," is huge but distant, an arena sound. Overall, Live Alive leaves the impression of a series of stellar moments caught on tape, with an intensity rarely captured in the recording studio.

10CC - Super 2 (1990)
320
10cc were an English Art Rock/Pop band that achieved their greatest commercial success during the 1970s. The band initially comprised four members, Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, who had written and recorded together for about three years before taking on the name of 10cc in 1972. The lineup featured two strong songwriting teams who injected their songs with sharp wit and lyrical dexterity. The more "commercial" team of Stewart and Gouldman were generally fairly straightforward "pop" songwriters, who created some of the group's most accessible material. The experimental half of 10cc was Godley and Creme, who brought a distinctive "art school" sensibility and a more "cinematic" writing style to the group. All four members were skilled multi-instrumentalists, vocalists, writers and producers and each could perform convincingly as lead singers. This twofer CD of 10cc's first two albums, 1973's self-titled effort & 1974's "Sheet Music", is a splendid release for sure and contains all of the tracks from each of their first two albums.

The godfather of punk's early ambition was to bring the darker elements of great literature--decay, death, and decadence--to rock & roll. The Raven was born following a spoken-word performance of Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" during which Reed "came to understand it in a way I never had before." Accordingly, The Raven may strike Reed's longtime fans in a way the artist never has before. Although dark, the music is stylistically all over the place--from Velvet Underground-like rock instrumentals to actor Steve Buscemi's creepy lounge-lizard take on the anti-showbiz "Broadway Song," to moments that recall such diverse past Reed ventures as Metal Machine Music and the Bells. He even reprises two classics--"Perfect Day" and "The Bed" from Transformer and Berlin, respectively -- in almost unrecognizable forms. Ornette Coleman and David Bowie drop in, and actors read text in which Reed mixes Poe's poems and stories with his own words. The opium references are surely Poe's; the explicit images probably all Reed's. It's hard to tell, though; the blend's that good.

INDIGENOUS - Broken Lands (2008)

Guitar virtuoso, singer and songwriter Mato Nanji returns as Indigenous with his sophomore Vanguard release, Broken Lands, on August 19th. With Broken Lands, Mato Nanji (which means “Standing Bear” as translated from the Nakota dialect) articulates an intensely personal record that pays tribute to his Native American heritage. The twelve songs written by Mato and his wife, Leah hold special meaning with lyrics that speak straight from the heart. Leah Nanji also provides background vocals. The title, Broken Lands, is pulled from the lyrics of “Place I Know”, a song about the reality of life on the reservation. Raised as a member of the Nakota Sioux Nation on the Yankton Indian Reservation in South Dakota, Mato first came to musical prominence when he formed Indigenous with his brother, sister and cousin. In 1998, they released their debut, Things We Do, which received wide, mass reception and included the Top 10 smash hit “Now That You’re Gone” and the Top 20 rock singles “Things We Do” and “Got To Tell You.” Indigenous continued their radio success with 2000’s Circle, which included the triumphs of “Little Time” and “Rest Of My Days.” After three successful albums, the siblings went their separate ways, and Mato forged ahead as the face of Indigenous releasing his Vanguard debut, Chasing The Sun. Chasing The Sun’s fiery blues prowess solidified Mato as one of blues-rock’s most exciting talents. While his debut album focused purely on guitar ingenuity and Chasing The Sun made the natural evolution toward lyrical substance, Broken Lands displays the culmination of maturity both sonically and lyrically. This new recording marks an augmentation of the Blues into Roots, World and Americana territories, by incorporating native percussion, slide, lap steel and acoustic guitars, and through the creative partnership formed with producer/mixer Jamie Candiloro (Ryan Adams, Willie Nelson, REM).

Truth (1968) was the first full-length album by Jeff Beck and his backing group. Enjoying strong reviews upon its release, Truth is now widely regarded as one of the first heavy metal albums, due to its blending of hard rock and blues. The album featured three original songwriting collaborations between Jeff Beck and singer Rod Stewart, "Let Me Love You", "Blues Deluxe", and "Rock My Plimsoul". DR.FEELGOOD - Wolfman Calling:
The Blues Of Lee Brilleaux (2003)
320
This 21-song collection of Dr. Feelgood recordings is named for the band's frontman, the late Lee Brilleaux. Its title, Wolfman Calling is titled for Brilleaux's obsession with Howlin' Wolf. The tracks included were selected because they were the vocalist's personal favorites to perform. As such, it is a solidly overdriven set of music that comprises studio material from throughout the band's career, as well as live material. The best tunes here are "Rock Me Baby," "My Babe," "Rolling and Tumbling," and "Mad Man Blues." There are four different Dr. Feelgood lineups here; the most satisfying one features the great Wilko Johnson on guitar. In sum, this is a set for Feelgood believers, as the band's studio outings are more consistent than this. Still, it has its value as showcasing the singular talent of Brilleaux. ~ All Music Guide

THE PLASTIC ONO BAND - Live Peace In Toronto 1969 (1969)
320
Although one of the world's best-kept secrets at the time, this was John Lennon's declaration of independence from the Beatles, the document of a concert appearance at Toronto's Rock and Roll Revival festival about a month after the conclusion of the Abbey Road sessions. Thrown together literally on the wing (they rehearsed only on the flight from England), the ad-hoc band consisting of Lennon, Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton on guitar, Klaus Voorman on bass, and Alan White on drums hit the stage to the surprise and delight of the thousands who packed Varsity Stadium. "We're just going to do numbers we know, you know, because we've never played together before," confesses Lennon, who was reportedly extremely nervous before going on. But the repertoire ought to have been a cakewalk for a quartet of seasoned rockers -- blues-based oldies ("Blue Suede Shoes," "Money," "Dizzy Miss Lizzie") and basic recent Lennon numbers ("Yer Blues," "Cold Turkey," "Give Peace a Chance") -- and they laid it down in a dignified, noisy, glorified garage band manner. Lennon is in fine vocal form, confident and funny despite his frequent apologies, while Ono confines her caterwauling to "Cold Turkey." That was side one of the original LP. Side two, alas, was devoted entirely to Ono's wailing, pitchless, brainless, banshee vocalizing on "Don't Worry Kyoko" and "John John (Let's Hope for Peace)" -- the former backed with plodding rock rhythms and the latter with feedback. No wonder you see many used copies of the LP with worn A-sides and clean, unplayed B-sides -- and Ono's "art" is just as irritating today as it was in 1969. But in those days, if you wanted Lennon you had to take the whole package. [This is the 35th Anniversary Edition, remastered by Mobile Fidelity.] ~ All Music Guide

Ray Charles Robinson (1930 – 2004), known by his stage name Ray Charles, was an American pianist and singer who shaped the sound of rhythm and blues. Frank Sinatra called him "the only true genius in the business" and in 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Charles #10 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

RICHIE HAVENS - Nobody Left To Crown (2008)

Richie Havens is an American folk singer and guitarist. Havens is perhaps best known for his intense rhythmic guitar style, soulful covers of pop and folk songs and his opening performance at the Woodstock Festival. Gifted with one of the most recognizable voices in popular music, Richie Havens has a soulful singing style that remains as unique and ageless as when he first emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960s. It's a voice that has inspired and electrified audiences from the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair in 1969, to the Clinton Presidential Inauguration in 1993 - coming full circle with the 30th Woodstock Anniversary celebration, "A Day In The Garden", in 1999. Richie Havens is not a man to easily abandon his hopes for a better world. "We are at the dawn of major change", he declares with a broad smile. Nobody Left to Crown is his heartfelt and unwavering contribution to these fine aspirations.

Perhaps still smarting from the poor reviews he received on his 1974 American tour, Harrison decided to make his 1992 return to the concert stage in Japan, where he presumed that both the fans and the media would be less critical and demanding than in America and England. Judging from the superb music on LIVE IN JAPAN, Harrison had little reason to worry. Backed by Eric Clapton's seasoned touring band (Clapton also plays guitar on the album but is not credited due to contractual reasons) Harrison performs confident, enthusiastic versions of most of his greatest songs, ranging from Beatles favorites like "Taxman" and "Here Comes The Sun" to a forceful version of his latest hit, "Cheer Down." Packed with excellent live versions of obscure (though wonderful) Beatles songs like "Piggies" and "I Want To Tell You," LIVE IN JAPAN easily surpasses THE CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH as the definitive George Harrison live album and it provides as excellent overview of Harrison's long and illustrious career.

BILLIE HOLIDAY - Sings Her Favorite Blues Songs (2006)
320
The first popular jazz singer to move audiences with the intense, personal feeling of classic blues, Billie Holiday changed the art of American pop vocals forever. Almost 50 years after her death, it's difficult to believe that prior to her emergence, jazz and pop singers were tied to the Tin Pan Alley tradition and rarely personalized their songs; only blues singers like Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey actually gave the impression they had lived through what they were singing. Holiday's highly stylized reading of this blues tradition revolutionized traditional pop, ripping the decades-long tradition of song plugging in two by refusing to compromise her artistry for either the song or the band. She made clear her debts to Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong, but in truth her style was virtually her own, quite a shock in an age of interchangeable crooners and band singers. With her spirit shining through on every recording, Holiday's technical expertise also excelled in comparison to the great majority of her contemporaries.

DAVID BOWIE - David Bowie (1967)
320
David Bowie’s mid 60’s career was less than enigmatic. By the onset of 1966 he had racked up three singles (with at least three different backing bands) on three different labels encompassing at least three genres. The later three were under the guidance of Shel Talmy , best known for his work with The Who, The Kinks etc. Three more resounding (but brilliant) flops ensued under the producing hand of Tony Hatch on the Pye label left him as a man without a contract. The untitled David Bowie LP was released on June 1, 1967 in the UK as Deram DML 1007. It is worthy to note through no coincidence, that “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” was released on the same day. Though “David Bowie” failed to chart and it remains to this day one of Bowie’s least favorite LP’s it is (to quote one of former producer Tony Hatch’s compositions) “a sign of the times”. The summer of 1967 was known to many as “The Summer Of Love”, but in David Bowie’s world (then his parents semi-detached at #4 Plainstow Grove in the London suburb ofBromley,) flowers and hippies were far from the mix of Ray Davies like social observations and a picture of an England where village greens, henpecked relatives and child murders sat at ease with in crowd night spots, Eastern religion (Bowie’s Buddhism flirtation was just beginning) and high priced fashion models.
David Bowie's first album is a pretty cool little record. If you like Bowie or quirky mid-60's British pop, then you really can't go wrong.

TOM WAITS - Blue Valentine (1978)
320
More hard-boiled tales from Tom Waits, who manages to sing lines like "Everyone I know is either dead or in prison" in a raw, whiskey-soaked rasp that sounds both comical and deadly serious. Waits doesn't break any new creative ground here, but continues to refine his down-and-out ham-and-egger persona. It's booze and broads, sex and violence, laughs and heartbreak. This 1978 album opens with an astonishingly desperate version of "Somewhere" (from "West Side Story"), performed like Louie Armstrong with a migraine. From there it's the usual Waits mix of crackpot wordplay and the cocktail lounge jazz likes of "Romeo Is Bleeding". - amazon.com

VANILLA FUDGE - Renaissance (1968)
320
"Renaissance" is the third album by the rock band Vanilla Fudge. Released in 1968, it was the band's first album to feature mostly original material, with five of its seven tracks penned by band members. The original album's two cover tunes are Essra Mohawk's "The Spell That Comes After" (erroneously credited on original pressings of the LP to Frank Zappa's art director Cal Schenkel), and "Season Of The Witch," originally written and performed by the Scottish folk singer Donovan. The band also interpolates lyrics from a second Essra Mohawk song, "We Never Learn," into their rendition of "Season of the Witch."
The album peaked at #20 on the Billboard album charts in July 1968.

TIM BUCKLEY - Morning Glory
- The Tim Buckley Anthology (2001)
320
F. Scott Fitzgerald said there are no second acts in American lives, but Tim Buckley wouldn't listen. Morning Glory brings together the two extraordinary, albeit all-too-brief, incarnations of Buckley's musical career: the pure-voiced '60s troubadour who gave us stunningly beautiful albums like Goodbye & Hello and the howling early-'70s experimentalist seemingly hell-bent on ravaging his past romanticism. For those put off by the tortured, erratic brilliance that came to the fore on the difficult Starsailor and downright strange Greetings from L.A. albums, this two-CD, nicely condenses the artist's nine-album, nine-year evolution from folk innocent to soul-scorched iconoclast. Heard in this context, the title song's tale of a sheltered romantic who befriends and ultimately condemns an uncompromising vagrant feels like it's the young Buckley confronting the artist he would later become. Profoundly moving and richly rewarding, Morning Glory finds resonance between the two sides of Buckley's genius that he was unable to reconcile in his own short life. - amazon.com

BUDDY GUY- Skin Deep (2008)
VBR
Several of Guy's good friends lend their talents to Skin Deep, including Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and Robert Randolph. Perhaps passing the blues music torch onto the next generation, the album also features the talents of nine-year-old six-string sensation Quinn Sullivan, who recently appeared on the Oprah show. Elaborating on his inspiration for the album title and song Skin Deep, Guy touches upon a powerful series of personal memories and observations on the ways in which "underneath" we're all the same. "I used to play with this boy, ride horses, down close to where I was born," he says in a press release for the album. "Then when we were 13, his parents made us stop. They used to say you had black blood or white blood, but we'd get a flashlight and hold it up to our skin and we'd just see red blood. That's what I mean by 'Skin Deep'." Featuring Guy's energetic fretwork and unique songwriting voice, Skin Deep promises to be one of the most acclaimed blues music albums of the year and another milestone in the storied life and career of one of the Chicago blues' most beloved artists.

WILLE NELSON & WYNTON MARSALIS
- Two Men With The Blues (2008)
VBR
The event was simply billed as "Willie Nelson Sings the Blues," but the historic two-night stand on January 12 and 13, 2007 at Jazz at Lincoln Center was far more than that. Call it a summit meeting between two American icons, Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis, two of the most significant figures in modern-day country and jazz, who discovered common ground in their love for jazz standards and the blues. Their performance stirred the sounds of New Orleans, Nashville, Austin and New York City into a brilliantly programmed mix that was equal parts down-home and cosmopolitan, with plenty of swing and just a touch of melancholy. To say that these shows were a hot ticket would be an understatement. Luckily, the tapes were rolling and the results of this unique collaboration now constitute the Blue Note album Two Men With The Blues for everyone who couldn't cram into The Allen Room. Featuring great playing from one of the hottest bands around these classic tracks are given new life by the extraordinary dual talents of Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis. At a time when most people are thinking of retirement, Willie has never been busier. His profile has been high in recent weeks with his various career retrospective releases and sold out tour and this album can rightly stake it's place alongside anything else he has done. Wynton rarely sounds so relaxed and both of these musical giants are clearly having the time of their lives together on these new interpretations of some of the greatest songs of the 20th century. - amazon.com

Suzie Ungerleider, who writes and performs as Oh Susanna, is a Canadian alternative country singer-songwriter. Ungerleider cites a wide range of jazz, blues, pop, rock and folk influences as inspirations for her musical career.
Over the last 10 years, Oh Susanna has garnered critical acclaim and loyal audiences around the world with Oh Susanna (2003), Sleepy Little Sailor (2001), Johnstown (1999), and EP (1997). She grew up a Canadian with an American passport, staring at the ocean, mountains and railroad tracks through sheets of rain. She sought refuge with song under burnt-out warehouses and in darkened clubs with the promise of guitar twang and a lonesome cry. Along the way she found inspiration in the music of the likes of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, as well as peers Jim Bryson, Sarah Harmer, Neko Case, Ron Sexsmith, Fred Eaglesmith, Eliza Gilkyson, Patti Griffin, and Iris Dement. Short Stories reunites Suzie with long time band-mates Bazil Donovan (Blue Rodeo) on bass, Cam Giroux (Weeping Tile, By Divine Right) on drums, Bob Packwood (Blue Rodeo) on piano as well as the explosive talents of Luke Doucet, Justin Rutledge and Burke Carroll.

ALBERT COLLINS - Live In Japan (1984)
320
Compared to Frozen Alive!, Live in Japan is a little more drawn-out and funky, featuring extended jamming on several songs. That isn't necessarily a bad thing -- Collins and his bandmates can work a groove pretty damn well. Of course, the main reason to listen to an Albert Collins album is to hear the man play. And play he does throughout Live in Japan, spitting out piercing leads with glee. On the whole, it's not quite as consistent as Frozen Alive!, but that's only by a slight margin. ~ All Music Guide

PATTI SMITH & KEVIN SHIELDS
- The Coral Sea (2008)
192
Recorded over two nights at the Royal Festival Hall in 2005 and 2006, The Coral Sea is Patti Smith's eulogy to her great friend, Robert Mapplethorpe, who took the famous photo that adorned her Horses album; he died of Aids-related complications in 1989. Smith tells the story of Mapplethorpe's mythical voyage to see the stars of the Southern Cross before he dies. Her words have the fire and focus of her greatest work as she struggles with the bitter truth that such a breathtaking talent could be so cruelly extinguished. Kevin Shields has recently been boosting demand for earplugs with his My Bloody Valentine live shows, but here he is perfectly restrained, supplying sounds and textures to a gripping, if demanding, two-hour listen. When the sounds suddenly stop, the silence yields to Smith's dazzling language and the power of enduring platonic love. The live album has no tracklist; it consists of Smith’s spoken word performance accompanied by Shields on "guitars and effects," according to a press release.

BAKERLOO - Bakerloo (1969)
320
Bakerloo was formed in 1968 Dave "Clem" Clempson on guitar, piano, and vocals , Keith Baker on drums, & Terry Poole on bass and vocals. The band's lone LP "Bakerloo" was a lost classic of heavy progressive British blues. The music of Bakerloo sounds like a cross between Cream and Mick Abrahams era Jethro Tull sans Ian Anderson's flute. Among the cuts included is a version of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Bring It On Home" which was also covered on Led Zeppelin II. Much of the album is given over to instrumental jamming hence the influence of Cream. This reissue also contains 2 bonus cuts, a non-lp b-side and an alternate take. Songs such as "Gang Bang" and "Son of Moonshine" exhibit the instrumental prowess of the band. Snatches of "Cat's Squirrel" covered by both Cream and Jethro Tull can be heard interpolated throughout the latter song. This lp combines elements of rock, blues and jazz for a hot combination. It is a shame that the group only released one album before Clempson left to join progressive rockers Colosseum. He was later a member of blues rockers Humble Pie and progressive rockers Greenslade. He also unsucessfully auditioned for the vacant lead guitarist position in the Rolling Stones after Mick Taylor quit (eventually filled by Ronnie Wood). It is a tribute to Clempson's versatility, exhibited here in its early form, that he was able to play so many styles of music. Keith Baker also left for greener pastures in Uriah Heep however his stint did not last long. In summary this is a welcome reissue for fans of British blues rock and the unsung Dave "Clem" Clempson. - amazon.com

DONOVAN - Troubadour:
The Definitive Collection 1964-1976 (1992)
320
Heaven knows, the Scotsman born Donovan Leitch was ripe for ridicule, even when he was hitting the charts with regularity. He was the ultimate flower child, and his airier pronouncements made cynics want to tighten up those love beads around his neck. Listening to Troubadour, however, it's striking how versatile, melodic, and agreeable most of his material sounds decades after "Mellow Yellow" has faded into a jaundiced yellow. Clearly under the sway of Bob Dylan early on in his career, Donovan nevertheless was capable of directing his reverence into something as enchanting as "Catch the Wind." Amping up as the '60s progressed, he assembled a series of psychedelic-pop classics, including "Season of the Witch," the "Hey Jude"-like sing-along "Atlantis," and the uncharacteristically driving "Hurdy Gurdy Man" (the latter features three-quarters of what was to become Led Zeppelin providing stellar support). This two-disc anthology may be more Donovan than some desire, but the booklet, seven previously unreleased tracks, and expansive perspective it provides makes it a more-than-worthy overview for those who take their paisley folk-rock with a beatific smile. - amazon.com

FENTON ROBINSON - Somebody Loan Me A Dime (1974)
320
One of the most subtly satisfying electric blues albums of the '70s. Fenton Robinson never did quite fit the "Genuine Houserocking Music" image of Alligator Records - his deep, rich baritone sounds more like a magic carpet than a piece of barbed wire, and he speaks in jazz-inflected tongues, full of complex surprises. The title track hits with amazing power, as do the chugging "The Getaway," a hard-swinging "You Say You're Leaving," and the minor-key "You Don't Know What Love Is." In every case, Robinson had recorded them before, but thanks to Bruce Iglauer's superb production, a terrific band, and Robinson's musicianship, these versions reign supreme. ~ All Music Guide

V.A. - A Twist Of Marley: A Tribute (2001)
320
Purists in the reggae community will be up in arms against producer Lee Ritenour for this 13-track star-studded effort, while the smooth-jazz world will rejoice over one of the year's best albums. While the former group cringes, the latter will marvel at how the guitar legend can take a well-known reggae anthem such as "Get Up, Stand Up," remove every ounce of reggae from it, add his buddy Dave Grusin to the mix, and make it sound like they wrote it for one of their duet albums. Even world-music purists should appreciate the same reggae-purifying process applied to "No Woman, No Cry" and "Redemption Song," with only the African elements left in, supplied in abundance by South African Jonathan Butler and Cameroonian Richard Bona, respectively. The results beat with the pulse of the continent more so than Marley's originals. Most other tracks maintain the reggae rhythms, with a definite commercial smooth-jazz lilt. There are no misses, but the bull's-eyes are both Maxi Priest tracks, and the inspired parings of Marc Antoine with Patti Austin and Rick Braun with Phil Perry. - amazon.com

SCOTT HENDERSON - Well To The Bone (2002)
320
"Well To The Bone" is Scott Henderson's third solo outing and perhaps his best to date. Unlike the first two releases, "Dog Party" and "Tore Down House" which were heavily blues influenced, "Well to the Bone" is somewhat of an enigma and hard to categorize into any one genre. Nevertheless, the songs and guitar compositions are probably the best Henderson has ever penned. The songs range form dark and biting, almost Hendrix like ("Devil Boy") to the light and humorous ("Lola Ray" you can't take your cousin to bed...gene pool damage...six fingers and six toes.) The guitar playing is nothing short of brilliant sounding at times like Vai and Satriani and other times like Hendrix with a hint of Stevie Ray. This is a must have for electric guitarists particularly those that like experimentation.

NORA JEAN BRUSO - Sings The Blues (2003)
320
Nora Jean Bruso is a Chicago blues singer with deep Delta roots. Recently named one of the ten great women in Chicago Blues by Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, she possesses a voice that has been compared to KoKo Taylor's. Nora's singing career in Chicago began in 1976 when her Aunt Rose heard Nora sing at home and brought her to several clubs she was promoting. It was at the Majestic on the West Side of Chicago that Nora sat in with Scottie and the Oasis. She was invited to join the band and spent several years with them before Scottie's unfortunate passing. During this time many local Chicago musicians, most notably Mary Lane and Joe Barr, encouraged Nora and taught her the fine points of her craft. While touring Europe, Canada, and the United States, Nora refined her performing skills and developed an international fan base. She appeared on many major festivals including the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas, the Chicago Blues Festival and the Pocono Blues Festival and in 2004 she signed a three record deal with Maryland-based Severn Records.
"Nora Jean sounds just like I did when I was her age. She is one of the new up coming women that's singing the real blues. I know she is going to make it." - Koko Taylor

MARIANI - Perpetuum Mobile (1970)
256
“Perpetuum Mobile”, the awesome rare import disc by MARIANI featuring Texas guitar legend - ERIC JOHNSON, includes 13 trax (52 minutes) of killer, bad-ass, mind-blowing, grooved-out, authentically trippy retro-70’s bluesy Hendrixy heavy guitar power trio riffage that will trip your brain hard. The MARIANI: “Perpetuum Mobile” disc was originally recorded and released on vinyl in 1970 when ERIC JOHNSON was only 14 years old! Don’t be fooled by his young age, even @ 14 E.J. was a true heavy guitar hero. Going with a classic Les Paul through a stack of Marshalls mentality, young ERIC JOHNSON gets down hard on his axe and kicks ass with a heavy, get-down Hendrix(y) lead guitar freak-out vibe on the killer “Perpetuum Mobile” disc. Available for the 1st time on c.d., complete with kool packaging and featuring 2 bonus trax, the MARIANI: “Perpetuum Mobile” disc is further proof of the heavy guitar legacy of ERIC JOHNSON and is a rare musical glimpse into his early bluesy Hendrixy heavy guitar power trio roots.

KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD BAND - Trouble Is...(1997)
320
After releasing a debut that drew raves from people such as James Brown and B.B. King, Kenny Wayne Shepherd followed it up with an album that demonstrates how much musical growth this childhood prodigy has experienced in two years. On TROUBLE IS..., Shepherd's playing still reflects the huge influence of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan (particularly on the instrumental title track that finds him joined by Double Trouble and Reese Winans), but new singer Noah Hurt also colors everything with a growl reminiscent of Paul Rodgers. Moving slightly away from the country-blues of LEDBETTER HEIGHTS, Shepherd's strong rhythmic touch shines on everything from juke-joint exercises ("[Long] Gone" with James Cotton) to the transformation of Dylan's "Everything's Broken" into a roadhouse rave-up. Although this Shreveport native's guitar lends itself to more up-tempo material (check out "Chase The Rainbow"), slower songs are where the 20-year old digs deep into the heart of the blues. The pure emotion found in "Blue On Black" and "I Found Love (When I Found You)" shows that Shepherd can carry on the legacy of the blues for many years to come.
"Trouble Is..." was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

Dr.JOHN AND THE LOWER 911 - City That Care Forgot (2008)
320
On recent albums, Dr John has touched on the Katrina disaster that destroyed his hometown New Orleans – but here it's personal, a volley of bitter buckshot at specific targets – Bush, Cheney and Halliburton – and the wider lack of concern that allowed such a disgrace to take place. The doctor employs characteristically limber, syncopated funk grooves while vilifying the profiteers, "black gold politicians" and land-grabbers fattening themselves on human tragedy, and elsewhere using the city's traditional mournful horn stylings to commemorate the victims. The funeral oration "My People Need a Second Line" unites both strands, as he puzzles over why police now harass the mourners whose processions were once such a feature of the city's culture. It's a sterling broadside from the self-styled "samurai of the holy lost cause/ of the river and the bayou and the fishin' holes", though you should skip the front-loaded guest slots by Eric Clapton and Willie Nelson to get to the album's real meat.

EVA CASSIDY - Songbird (1998)
320
This posthumous anthology is the perfect introduction to the astonishing vocal talents of Eva Cassidy, a young, relatively unknown singer who died of cancer at 33, just as her career was beginning to gain steam. Cassidy, a native of Washington D.C., gained local favor with her pure, straightforward tone and her lovely, tasteful interpretations of everything from standards to gospel to contemporary pop.
SONGBIRD is a definitive best-of selection that picks from Cassidy's studio albums and shows the depth and breadth of her skills. SONGBIRD's perfection as a compilation is in its song choice, which covers Cassidy's takes on gospel ("Oh, Had I A Golden Thread"), soul (Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready"), pop (Sting's "Fields of Gold"), and well-known standards ("Over the Rainbow"). Cassidy's own perfection stems from her ability to bring the same precise, inventive phrasing and crystalline tone to each individual song, regardless of genre, making it indelibly her own. This collection became a best-selling number-one album in the U.K., and with good reason.

BONNIE RAITT - Takin' My Time (1973)
320
Along with Give It Up, Bonnie Raitt's third album, Takin' My Time, stands as her finest work prior to her 1989 critical and commercial watershed, Nick of Time. Featuring an eclectic mix of pop, rock, blues, and soul, the material ranges from Eric Kaz's powerful ballad "Cry Like a Rainstorm" and Jackson Browne's "I Thought I Was a Child" to the snappy acoustic blues of Mississippi Fred McDowell's "Write Me a Few of Your Lines/Kokomo Blues" and the charming calypso "Wah She Go Do." Raitt is backed on the album by members of Little Feat as well as Taj Mahal, legendary New Orleans drummer Earl Palmer, and Rolling Stones sax man Ernie Watts, giving the album a loose, grooving vibe. Her versions of Mose Allison's smoldering "Everybody's Cryin' Mercy" and Randy Newman's sly "Guilty" are real standouts.

TONY JOE WHITE - Deep Cuts (2008)
320
Tony Joe White has had a long, impressive career, and Deep Cuts easily carries on his legacy of great songwriting. It captures the deep, dark dankness of the Louisiana swamps and bayous where White was born and raised. Drawing from his extensive catalogue of hits, reworking the classics, and presenting a couple of new tunes, Deep Cuts is a fitting introduction to this great swamp blues artist.

RICKY SKAGGS - Life Is A Journey (1997)
320
Richard Lee Skaggs is a Grammy-winning country and bluegrass singer, musician, producer, and composer.
If Ricky Skaggs' latter-day albums lack the surprise and excitement of his early records, his sheer skill and musicianship nevertheless ensure that the albums are rarely boring. Life Is a Journey is a textbook example of this. There's nothing new here, to be sure, but Skaggs performs with grace and good humor that gives the music an extra, endearing kick. It may suffer from some ill-chosen material, and it may be a little spotty, yet Life Is a Journey remains another solid addition to Skaggs' catalog. ~ All Music Guide
