PROCOL HARUM
- 30th Anniversary Anthology (1997)

The best collection yet devoted to Procol Harum's classic early period ties together the many facets of their sound and their early history, including numerous outtakes and all of the music on four albums from 1967 through 1970. The clarity of the sound makes the first album -- which was roundly criticized, especially in England, for having been cut in mono in late 1967 -- seem a lot more muscular and progressive here than it did in its original release form. The producers have tampered with the song order on A Salty Dog, moving that record's title track in amongst disc three's single sides for time considerations while still leaving "Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Homburg" off of the first CD (the original commercial flaw with the debut album in England was the absence of either of those songs, and the seven-month-plus delay in getting it out). From the psychedelic/progressive blues stylings of Shine on Brightly to the self-consciously leaner, harder Home, this is the optimum way to hear the band. The collection also documents the change from somewhat light, optimistic psychedelia in 1967/1968 to the darker, edgier psychedelia of 1970 and beyond. The best part for collectors will be disc three, which, in addition to the group's hit singles and surprisingly fascinating B-sides from 1967-1970, also includes outtakes from unfinished early album sessions and alternate takes (with different personnel) of "Whiter Shade of Pale," "Homburg," and others, some in stereo. The notes are reasonably thorough, although they skimp a little in telling the story of the recording of "Whiter Shade of Pale" and the subsequent assembling of the permanent band. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

RUSS BALLARD - Russ Ballard (1984)
320
A sunglasses-carrying member of the Roy Orbison/Ian Hunter shades club, former Argent vox-man and crack songwriter Russ Ballard ("Since You've Been Gone," "I Know There's Something Going On") breaks out with an ace band for another shot at the spotlight. "Voices" deservedly garnered dial time; and Ace Frehley, who hit big with Ballard's "New York Groove," returned to plunder the slattern "In the Night" for Frehley's Comet. Ballard himself blatantly rips the opening chords of "Who's Crying Now" for "The Last Time." He almost creates the Outfield on "Day to Day," but Ballard doesn't have the pipes. Russ Ballard won't knock you out of your socks, but he is a surprisingly strong guitarist and his songs maintain a high level of quality on both sides of this slab: a decent disc that goes everywhere but nowhere. Ballard's bizarre "fire" leitmotiv continues here. ~ All Music Guide

CASSANDRA WILSON - Loverly (2008)
320
Long considered one of the finest singers in the jazz world, Cassandra Wilson's new album is a tour de force of emotion, technique, interpretation and style as she brings her considerable powers to this collection of classic songs. Once again she has gathered a band of shining talent, featuring the brilliant Jason Moran on Piano with guitarist Marvin Sewell and Lonnie Plaxico on bass - a band that is so good together that Cassandra was happy to sit in the producer's chair and let the songs speak for themselves. Featuring incredible interpretations of the classics like Black Orpheus, Caravan, and The Very Thought of You, Cassandra is one of the few singers that can genuinely re-invent a song that we all think we know, such as Wouldn't It Be Loverly and turn it breathe new emotional life into it. - amazon.com

CASSANDRA WILSON - Thunderbird (2006)
320
With a series of terrific albums, Cassandra Wilson has established herself as one of the day's great vocalists and, in branching out from jazz into blues and folk and pop, paved the way for genre-crossing stars including Norah Jones. But the Mississippi native has rarely sounded as relaxed or winning as she does on "Thunderbird," which teams her with the stalwart O Brother Where Art Thou? producer T Bone Burnett. Recorded mostly in Los Angeles, the album is noteworthy not only for its roomy, atmospheric sound and experimental touches, but also for its improvised-in-the-studio approach. Working with innovative Burnett regulars including keyboardist (and co-producer) Keefus Ciancia, guitarist Marc Ribot, and drumming legend Jim Keltner, Wilson delivers such offbeat delights as "Going to Mexico," a dreamlike, funk-tinged tune built on a sample of "Hey Pocky A-Way" by New Orleans' Wild Tchoupitoulas. Eschewing the well-known pop tunes she usually covers, she lends her huskily seductive vocals to Jakob Dylan's wistful "Closer to You" and Burnett's dark "Strike a Match," to which she claimed co-ownership by changing the time signature and adding a lyric. The inspired contributors also include programmer and bassist Mike Elizondo (producer of Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine") and guitarist Colin Linden, who wails on a gripping extended reading of Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Easy Rider" and duets with Wilson on the cowboy classic "Red River Valley," which eloquently sums up her ability to breathe jazz meaning into anything she chooses. - amazon.com

JETHRO TULL - Heavy Horses (1978)
320
HEAVY HORSES brings together the best elements of Jethro Tull's sonic arsenal: heavy guitars, intricate, evolving song structures, folk tendencies, and Ian Anderson's inimitable growl. The album opens with the bouncy "And the Mouse Police Never Sleeps," a fairy tale-like song about the adventures of a group of forest animals. "Acres Wild" features a disco-esque groove held down by funky drums and bass. The album's out-and-out highlight is the nearly eight-minute "No Lullaby," a song that undergoes the sort of musical metamorphoses present in Tull's best material. Another exceptional effort is the multi-textured title track, a song written as a tribute to the farm horses in England (which, at the time of the album's release, were declining in number). HEAVY HORSES is one of the band's most heartfelt efforts.

GRAHAM PARKER - Howlin' Wind (1976)
320
Debut albums rarely come any better than this. Graham Parker's Howling Wind was released in 1976 when the punk movement was wavering in the midst of the music scene in England. Parker and Costello were to release debuts of equal stature with the 'New Wave' tag firmly placed around both their necks. In hindsight of course listening to this masterpiece today, you will find that the contents owe more to Van Morrison and sixties Soul than that of the punk scene. The songwriting skills displayed here are extraordinary to say the least, there is not one brief moment of relapse. "White Honey" starts the proceedings , a spellbinder of a track doused with an unforgettable melody and rhythm backing. You also get "Silly Thing" with its cracking, rasping brass bursts, the rockabilly workout "Back to Schooldays", the Morrison tinged "Gypsy Blood", the classic "Soul Shoes" and the live favourite "Don't ask me questions". All in all it's a staggering display of songcraft and musicianship expertly produced by Nick Lowe and it is a album that any lover of great music should have in their collection. You buy this and you get twelve top-notch tracks of pure utter class from the most gifted songwriter of his generation.

THE ANIMALS - The Best Of The Animals (1966)
320
1987 REMASTER
While they're best remembered for "House of the Rising Sun," the Animals had more than one track. What about "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We've Gotta Get Out of this Place," to name but two, as well as a later incarnation's "San Franciscan Nights," Eric Burdon's ode to the flower power of 1967? Always rough and ready, the Animals were a blues band from Newcastle who never looked completely comfortable in their suits, but who nonetheless produced some great pieces of music--although whether there was ever quite enough to fill an entire album you have to judge for yourself.
The Best of The Animals was The Animals' first greatest hits collection. It was released in February 1966 in the United States, but never put out in the United Kingdom. The album showcased The Animals' tough-edged pop hits combined with their more devoted blues and R&B workouts.

RY COODER - I, Flathead (2008)
VBR
If guitarist Ry Cooder's best albums are movie scores, including the folk-culture clash of 1985's Alamo Bay and the purple-prairie atmospheres of 1989's Paris, Texas. So it makes sense that, offscreen, he writes music like a film director. I, Flathead completes Cooder's trilogy of albums about endangered subcultural California (following 2005's Chavez Ravine and 2007's My Name Is Buddy), and a deluxe edition of this CD comes with a novella. You will need it to fully grasp the concept — Cooder plays a fictional race-car driver and strling country singer, Kash Buk — but it is easy to enjoy the songs as individual scenes, by turns sultry (the mariachi-R&B opener "Drive Like I Never Been Hurt"), comic (the Western-swing gag "Spayed Kooley") and romantic (the cantina-band yearning of "Filipino Dance Hall Girl"). Cooder sings the album's best number, "5,000 Country Music Songs," in character, as Buk, but in a way closer to the 1972 gem "Boomer's Story" — like a guy making slow headway in an indifferent world, to tart, poignant guitar-playing that is a sweet, short movie in itself. - rollingstone.com

IAN GILLAN - Live In Anaheim (2008)

The 2006 Gillan's Inn tour was a ten thousand mile pub crawl with band and crew living in one bus and which started in Buffalo New York on August 16, wound through the north east, mid west, through Canada, down the west coast, east, then north a bit, and ended September 21 in Medina, Minnesota. Live In Anaheim catches us about three quarters of the way through the tour, give or take, and the band was tight as hell. Not only was it a treat for me to revisit some old GilIan band tracks and to put a new spin on some older Purple stuff as well, we also got to play a few songs that have never been played live before this tour, including "Wasted Sunsets" and "Not Responsible" from Purple's Perfect Strangers, and "Bluesy Blue Sea" from my Magic album. V.A - Vanthology: A Tribute To Van Morrison (2003)
320
Comprised of 15 tracks, Vanthology highlights the accomplishments of Van Morrison with a diverse collection of covers. Featuring soul/blues heavyweights from Little Milton to Son Seals, the album contrasts Morrison’s biggest hits, ("Tupelo Honey” and “Brown Eyed Girl") with lesser known favorites from the singer’s earlier days, ("My Lonely Sad Eyes"). Backed by a solid band including Jon and Sally Tiven, as well as former Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke, the guest artists give fine efforts from start to finish. "Vanthology" is a solid CD with an impressive list of featured performers. For aficionados of soul, blues and R&B the album will provide some fine moments of listening enjoyment. For fans of Van Morrison, the album may be a bit of a let down as the tracks lack the flair and familiarity of the original recordings. Fair comparison or not, paying tribute to someone like Morrison is not an easy task. Although imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, it is not always the most effective. Vanthology however, is certainly a worthy attempt.

EMMYLOU HARRIS - Anthology:
- The Warner / Reprise Years (2001)
320
Gorgeous-voiced Emmylou Harris’ three-decade journey as an interpreter and distinctive stylist has resulted in some of the most satisfying sounds in contemporary music. Indeed, Harris has mastered the depth and breadth of the American roots songbook like no other artist. Born in Alabama in 1947 and raised in Virginia, she was "discovered" by members of The Flying Burrito Brothers, who saw her perform in a Washington, D.C. club. They hooked her up with soon-to-be ex-Burrito Gram Parsons, who hired her to sing on his first solo album, GP, in 1972, and his follow-up, Grievous Angel, the following year. Since then, Harrris has evolved from duet partner to keeper of the flame, from sweetheart of the rodeo to bluegrass champion to alt-country godmother. Spanning 1975-1990, the 2-CD Anthology: The Warner/Reprise Years celebrates Harris’ solo beginnings, her stint with the ever-changing Hot Band, and later collaborative highlights. It features duets (Roy Orbison, Don Williams), a trio (Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt), as well as backing performances from some of the top names in country and rock—including Vince Gill, Waylon Jennings, Ricky Scaggs, Rodney Crowell, James Burton, Duane Eddy, Mark O’Connor, Ry Cooder, David Lindley, and Kate McGarrigle. - rhino.com

An original driving force behind The Allman Brothers Band, Dickey Betts started his solo career in 1974 with the release of "Highway Call". He's kept it up since then, working with The Allman Brothers and forming Dickey Betts & Great Southern in 1977. Dickey is on the road with the newer version of Great Southern, including drummer Frankie Lombardi, virtuoso bass player Brother Dave, and Dan Toler providing intricate harmony parts and soaring leads. The legendary guitar player delivered a knock-out show combining the blues, southern rock, and country he is well known for. The show at the Odeon in Cleveland March 9 kicked off with "Little Martha" and "Steady Rolling Man" and then into crowd favorite "Blue Sky". Newer material was a hit, especially "Girl With The Deep Blue Eyes" and keyboardist Mike Kach's tune "Get Away". He didn't leave out the classics, "Ramblin Man" was one of the biggest crowd pleasers of the evening, along with "Nobody Knows" and "Elizabeth Reed". They also included "Having a Good Time", which Dickey refers to as "my Jerry Garcia tune". The Instant Live CD, Dickey's first, is a three CD set from one of the great guitarists of the rock generation, keeping fans happy for over 30 years.

MANFRED MANN - Mannerisms (2004)

The compilation was originally issued in 1976, containing a dozen A-sides and notable album tracks, and it was decent as far as it went, filling in a few holes and re-exposing some worthwhile album tracks. What will surprise many listeners (especially Americans, who may well never have heard of, much less heard, these sides) is how late Manfred Mann embraced the basic British Invasion sound, well into 1967, and also how good a psychedelic band they were.

LONG JOHN BALDRY - Everything Stops For Tea (1972)
320
Long John Baldry was an English blues singer. Like its companion It Ain't Easy, the second half of Long John Baldry's early-'70s comeback Everything Stops for Tea initially attracted the most attention via its producers, former Baldry sidemen Elton John and Rod Stewart. The two superstars each handled one side apiece and, though neither shines with the same generous idiosyncrasies that saw the earlier LP sparkle, still they power Baldry to some marvelous heights -- most notably the should-have-been-a-hit cover of "Iko Iko," and a glorious "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover." With Baldry's musical tastes now drawing folkier textures into his blues (and eschewing the big ballad pop altogether), it's a varied and oft-times eclectic collection. But the strength of Baldry's performance smooths over any rough edges that might have tripped other singers and, though It Ain't Easy remains the superior of these two albums, this one really isn't that far behind it. ~ All Music Guide

JEWEL - Perfectly Clear (2008)
320
Jewel's new country disc definitely looks backward rather than forward for its inspiration, with a pronounced acoustic background and the piercing, declarative sound of fiddles, steel and dobros rather than electric guitars forming the musical settings. Her songs explore themes ranging from empowerment ("Stronger Woman," "Perfectly Clear") and anger ("Anyone But You") to betrayal ("Till She Feels Like Cheating") and romantic fulfillment ("Everything Reminds Me of You," "Two Become One.") The voice is clear and steady, and while she won't remind anyone of Loretta Lynn or Patsy Cline, these numbers are far more immersed in the qualities and sensibility of vintage country than the lexicon and tone of several contemporary hitmakers. The record's first single "Stronger Woman" is a powerful and positive message that resonates with women of any age. Perfectly Clear is produced by Jewel and John Rich of Big and Rich fame. "Jewel is probably one of the greatest American singer-songwriters we have. It is such an honor to work with anyone of that caliber of talent," Rich says. Jewel has spent a lot of time in Nashville over the last few years, and has naturally been drawn to and accepted by the Nashville music community. "If I were discovered today, there is no doubt that I would be signed as a country artist. Songs like "You Were Meant For Me" would have been a country hit today, and not a pop hit as it was in the 90s. The genres have changed more than I feel I have," says Jewel.

DUKE ROBILLARD - Living With The Blues (2002)
320
Best known as the founder of Roomful of Blues and for his short stint with the Fabulous Thunderbirds (replacing Jimmie Vaughan), Duke Robillard had only released two blues albums between 1996 and 2002. Although he was awarded the W.C. Handy Best Blues Guitarist award for 2000 and 2001 and his tireless road work always included plenty of stinging solos, Robillard left the jazz and worldbeat tangents behind for this welcome return to his first love. Those who have followed Robillard's career know that he's never been tied to one style, and Living With the Blues highlights his eclectic talents. Robillard crackles on everything here, from the straight-ahead Chicago approach of Willie Dixon by way of Muddy Waters' "I Live the Life I Love" to the Roomful-styled hard swing of the obscure Willie Egans' "I'm Mad About You Baby" to the acoustic treatment of Tampa Red's "Hard Road" and the jump blues of his own "Sleepin' on It" (reprised from the Roomful years). He turns the Brownie McGhee title track into a tough Chicago shuffle, featuring the rollicking tenor sax of old Roomful alumnus Doug James, and closes with a bluesy rhumba-styled version of B.B. King's "Long Gone Baby." He also adds tough spunk to Little Milton's "If Walls Could Talk," throwing in one of the disc's greasiest solos along the way. Through it all, Robillard is obviously having a blast, whipping out tight guitar solos with white-hot precision and snazzy arrangements that never overwhelm the band or the song. The horns that dominate the album return Robillard to the Roomful sound that he clearly loves and, even though his gruff vocals are still an acquired taste, his singing is filled with such enthusiasm that you can forgive its technical shortcomings. There's a real sense of joy that infuses every track here, making it perfect for established Duke Robillard fans or newcomers who want to get a taste of the man's substantial talents. ~ All Music Guide

INDIGENOUS - Things We Do (1998)
320
In the late 1990s, a whole slew of young guitarists emerged, all making a grab for the Stevie Ray Vaughan mantle. In this group, one must include Mato Nanji, guitarist for the family venture Indigenous. Unlike many of his predecessors, Mato Nanji may actually be deserving of the honor. That's a bold statement, but a listen to "Begin to Wonder," the instrumental "Holdin' Out," or especially "Nothing I Can Do" off of Things We Do are sufficient to justify it. The album opens with the low-key, midtempo title track, but it's on "Got to Tell You" that Things We Do really hits its stride. On the whole, this CD is a very strong effort, especially for musicians still in their early 20s.

INDIGENOUS - Live At Pachyderm Studio (1999)
320
Performed for a tiny audience at the renowned Pachyderm Studio in 1998, this CD is the best example of what Indigenous sound like live. While their national debut Things We Do is an excellent introduction to their music, their live shows are far above and beyond any studio recording in terms of energy and performance, as the entire band frequently takes off into 10-minute jams to mind-blowing effect. Live at Pachyderm Studio provides a taste of that, including extended versions of several previously recorded songs, as well as previously unavailable material. An item of special interest is the cover of Hendrix's "Red House"; the guitarist's influence on Indigenous frontman Mato Nanji is undeniable. The production on this album is so clear, putting it in the stereo and cranking it up might be almost as good as hearing them live. This band is addictive, and Live at Pachyderm Studio is the perfect fix.

THE EQUALS - Greatest Hits (1996)
320
An energetic East London combo, the Equals balanced maximum R&B with plenty of pop, plus a few nods to vocalist Eddy Grant's West Indian background. Grant, born in British Guyana, moved to England with his family at the age of 12, and settled in a council estate named Hornsey Rise in northeast London. Four years later, he formed the Equals with schoolmates Lincoln Gordon (guitar), his twin brother Dervin Gordon (originally the vocalist), Pat Lloyd (guitar, then bass), and drummer John Hall. The band began gigging around London, amazing audiences with their apparently limitless energy and a distinct style fusing pop, blues, and R&B plus elements of ska and bluebeat. By 1965, the Equals began doing dates in Europe as well, and released their first single on President Records. Though "Hold Me Closer" didn't perform on the charts, DJs began playing the flip side and by 1967 "Baby, Come Back" had hit the top of the charts in Germany and the Netherlands. One year later, the single hit number one in Britain as well, and brushed the charts in America. Subsequent singles lacked the immediate punch of "Baby, Come Back," however, and the Equals landed only two more Top Ten hits: "Viva Bobby Joe" and "Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys," the latter an apt message track from one of the few racially mixed bands of the era. Grant left the Equals for a solo career in 1971, and though the band never charted again, they remained a popular live act, especially on the continent. Drummer Ronald Telemacque and guitarists Dave Martin and Frankie Hepburn were later added to the lineup. - allmusic.com

MICHAEL CHARLES - I'm Nobody's Fool (2006)
320
This 2006 CD release celebrates the reunion of artist, Michael Charles and producer, Greg Williams of Dex Audio Melbourne Australia, Charles' home town. Greg engineered and co-produced Charles' recordings from 1985 to 1992, and the two of them rejoined efforts when Producer Williams received the final studio mixes from Sammary Studio USA. Greg, never hearing the material before, was left with the challenge of final editing and final mastering, positively a task that Charles would only allow Greg and his expertise to complete. After receiving the master back from Australia, MC declared, while listening to the final cuts, " ... I will never know why I waited so long to work once again with the man who was such an integral part of the early stages of my solo career in Australia and whom I have the utmost respect for." Michael's releases thus far have highlighted his prolific song writing. This particular album, I'm Nobody's Fool, also boasts a power house of lyrics, but definitively stresses the phenomenal guitar performances of M C. This album is probably the closest you'll get to him and his live sound on stage.
Michael Charles' I'm Nobody's Fool features jamming hard driven guitar blues all the way to sensitive acoustic works. For every guitar enthusiast.

ALBERT CASTIGLIA - These Are The Days (2008)

"These Are The Days" contains five Castiglia originals, including a tribute to his mentor Junior Wells, “Godfather of the Blues”. The material is varied, with songs from Bob Dylan (“Catfish’), Nappy Brown (“Night Time is the Right Time”) and Fenton Robinson (“Somebody Loan me a Dime”). Once again, Graham Wood Drout contributes another outstanding song, “Celebration,” to add to the string of compositions he’s written on each of Castiglia’s albums. Until now, “Somebody Loan Me a Dime” and Little Willie John’s “Need Your Love So Bad” were attention grabbers in Castiglia’s live shows; but through the insistence of Blues Leaf president Joe Morabia, Albert captures that magic on this album. In addition to the solid blues songs throughout These are the Days, Castiglia generates some dance floor energy with “Bad Year Blues” and “Twister,” two jumping tunes sure to become live show favorites. This is the album that says “These Are Albert Castiglia’s Days.”

THE BYRDS - Live At The Fillmore - February 1969 (2000)
320
Recorded at Bill Graham's legendary San Francisco concert hall during two shows in February 1969, this disc sounds like a practice session recorded in the morning after a particularly long, rough night. The vocals fall flat too often and rhythmic cohesion is always one measure away-too many noodly, irrelevant notes are slathered atop every song. Some of this can be explained by the absence of one former Byrd. In turning the band towards their country-rock bent and then splitting after less than a year, Gram Parsons left a hole that could never really be filled, not even by the nimble-fingered Clarence White. Their take on the Louvin Brothers' classic "Christian Life," for instance, is ragged, but not right. But the CD certainly has merit for more than just archivists and obsessives: the straight-ahead folk-rock material does shine with the "Nashville West" flavorings. There's a fiery "King Apathy III"; a revelatory, subtle version of "Bad Night at the Whiskey"; and a truly emotional take of "He Was a Friend of Mine," especially poignant a year after the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy. - Amazon
This was the late, great Clarence White's spotlight. The six-string innovator and inventor of the B-Bender (a guitar that sounds like a pedal steel) upstages Roger McGuinn's 12-string Rickenbacker skills on this perfect performance of psychedelic, jazzy, countrified folk-rock freak-outs. Jimi Hendrix came to this show just to see White play.

JANIVA MAGNESS - Do I Move You? (2006)
320
"2006 Blues Music Award nominee for Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year Janiva Magness is described by Delbert McClinton as ".... sings with a rare conviction. She will not be denied." What is confirmed by listening to Do I Move You? is that Janiva Magness is a supremely confident blues vocalist. The funky blues of I'm Just A Prisoner (Of Your Good Lovin') showcases her smokey voice and is a powerful opener. Her tight band gives an excellent backdrop to her superb blues/rock vocal. Willie Dixon's Workin' On Me Baby is given a shuffling blues treatment and shows that Janiva can be a real diva if she turns her hand to it. You Were Never Mine (co-written by the aforementioned Mr. McClinton) has Janiva producing another facet to her singing. This time she is slow and soulful and the layers of her voice are nothing less than spectacular. Bassist Jeff Turmes contributes three songs to the album, the first being I Can't Stop Cryin'. This is the real deal and could easily be mistaken for an authentic song from the blues heyday. It's Turmes again, this time on Don't Let Your Memories but unfortunately, this acoustic blues is a bit tame.

CHICAGO - Stone Of Sisyphus (2008)
VBR
Recorded in 1993, Stone of Sisyphus didn't appear as scheduled in 1994 due to Chicago's record label, Warner, believing the album to be too uncommercial. As it often happens with unreleased records by major acts, a legend built up around the scrapped record, at least among devoted Chicago fans, the kind who would appreciate the musical stretching found on Stone of Sisyphus. Frankly, they may be the only group to appreciate the departures on Stone of Sisyphus, as it's a curious creature -- a splashy, expensive mainstream album that's restless yet not quite experimental but entirely devoid of pop songs. If this had been the Chicago of the early '70s, who specialized in ten-minute jazz-rock songs on their series of double albums, perhaps it would have been easier for the label to accept the variety of sounds here, but this was a Chicago coming out of five years of big placid adult contemporary hits -- songs that courted an audience that would bristle at the stiff funk of "Mah-Jong" or the Jordanaires singing harmonies on the airy "Bigger Than Elvis." Surely, any listener would shudder at "Sleeping in the Middle of the Bed," an absurd socially conscious rap track by Robert Lamm that almost certainly was the final nail in the coffin for Warner, as it's hard to imagine any audience that would find this appealing. "Sleeping in the Middle of the Bed" also goes a long way toward illustrating just how odd Stone of Sisyphus is: it's tame compared to any other record from 1993-1994, but judged alongside Chicago's other albums it's flat-out bizarre, the sound of a group desperate for a departure in the wake of a flop (1991's Chicago Twenty 1), so the bandmembers will try anything different within the confines of their sound. This means not abandoning the pristine productions -- this time courtesy of Peter Wolf, not the guy from J. Geils -- but it does mean leaving melody behind, switching up song constructions, getting a little jazzy again, and indulging a social consciousness, all things that reward the patience of loyal listeners and bewilder anybody else. - All Music Guide

CHUCK BERRY - Berry Is On Top - St Louis To Liverpool (2008)
320
Nearly two years and fifteen analog reels of tape later, we are truly excited about the exclusive pairing of ..Berry Is On Top (1959) with St. Louis To Liverpool (1964). Like the Little Richard albums, both Berry titles originally were compilations that Chess Records had actually assembled from singles and various sessions for their 12” debuts. While lucky with St. Louis to Liverpool, whose reels had been retained intact, the real fun was ..Berry Is On Top, where the majority of the songs were each on separate reels which had to be hunted down, identified and auditioned.
The result: a miniature jukebox containing over a dozen of some of the biggest hits in music history, including five top ten charters by another one of the true architects of rock and roll!
Each song was meticulously transferred from fifteen different reels of original analog master tape. Simply the best of Chuck Berry like you’ve never heard it before!

CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE - Stand Back!
Here Comes Charley Musselwhite's Southside Band (1967)
320
Vanguard may have spelled his name wrong (he prefers Charlie or Charles), but the word was out as soon as this solo debut was released: Here was a harpist every bit as authentic, as emotional, in some ways as adventuresome, as Paul Butterfield. Similarly leading a Chicago band with a veteran Black rhythm section (Fred Below on drums, Bob Anderson on bass) and rock-influenced soloists (keyboardist Barry Goldberg, guitarist Harvey Mandel), Musselwhite played with a depth that belied his age -- only 22 when this was cut! His gruff vocals were considerably more affected than they would become later (clearer, more relaxed), but his renditions of "Help Me," "Early in the Morning," and his own "Strange Land" stand the test of time. He let his harmonica speak even more authoritatively on instrumentals like "39th and Indiana" (essentially "It Hurts Me Too" sans lyrics) and "Cha Cha the Blues," and his version of jazz arranger Duke Pearson's gospel-tinged "Cristo Redentor" has become his signature song -- associated with Musselwhite probably more so than with trumpeter Donald Byrd, who originally recorded the song for Blue Note. Goldberg is in fine form (particularly on organ), but Mandel's snakey, stuttering style really stands out -- notably on "Help Me," his quirky original "4 P.M.," and "Chicken Shack," where he truly makes you think your record is skipping. ~ All Music Guide

BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST - Endless Dream (1996)

Barclay James Harvest is a British rock band specialising in Symphonic/Melodic Rock with folk/ progressive/ classical influences. Probably the best Barclay James Harvest compilation CD issued to date, this is not just a simple "Best of" like so many of the others. Containing the "Live EP" version of "Medicine Man" without the break this is clearly a collection for the connoisseur. The selected tracks would warrant a place on any "Best of B.J.H." CD but have the added attraction of being either un-released or rare versions including the full length version of "Forever Yesterday" which changes it from just another track as originally released to BJH classic. The BJH version of "Maestoso" is also of great interest to the committed BJH fan. All in all an unusual but brilliant compilation CD. - Amazon

BOB DYLAN - Slow Train Coming (1979)
320
Of all the pitstops made by the nomadically creative Dylan, none was more unusual than his brief conversion to Christianity in the late '70s. SLOW TRAIN COMING was the first of two records (SAVED being the other) that found Zimmerman exploring his newfound faith. Recorded at Memphis' famed Muscle Shoals Studios and produced by soul vets Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett, SLOW TRAIN's supporting cast includes Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler on guitar and Pick Withers on drums, along with a handful of studio musicians. Knopfler's crisp guitar playing is surrounded by a punchy horn section and a phalanx of female background singers who are a perfect compliment to Dylan's revitalized vocals. Songs such as "When He Returns" and "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking" reverberate with the conviction of Dylan's new faith whereas "When You Gonna Wake Up" simultaneously celebrates America's greatness as a country and warns of the need to seek a new set of values. Dylan eventually won a Best Rock Vocal Grammy for "Gotta Serve Somebody," but the enigmatic one renounced his conversion to Christianity by 1983.

OTIS REDDING - The Dock Of The Bay (1968)
320
Shortly after his breakthrough appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival, Otis Redding began talking of making a record that would be to soul music what Sgt. Pepper's was to rock. Sadly, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" was the only song he recorded for this project before his untimely death, and so The Dock of the Bay wound up being a mixed bag of non-LP singles and previously unreleased material. Of course, Redding was such an amazing singer that even a ragtag collection of his stuff is worth checking out, and this album certainly has its fair share of high points, including "Tramp," a sassy duet with Carla Thomas; the funky "Don't Mess with Cupid"; and the unbelievably poignant "Ole Man Trouble." - Amazon

Even though the Ford Blues Band has never had a problem putting across mediocre material, songwriting is not one of the outfit's strong points. With successful studio albums covering both Michael Bloomfield and his old boss Paul Butterfield already in Ford Blues Band's catalog, the group plays to its strengths with a live recording, cherrypicking the best songs from both and adding the raw energy that live concerts typically generate. RITA COOLIDGE - The Lady's Not For Sale (1972)
320
VINYL RIP
Rita Coolidge's third album is a fine mixture of covers and originals that manages to showcase her fine vocal abilities as well as show off an impressive array of friends. Booker T. Jones contributes not only his fine flute skills, but also two songs. Noted guitarist and songwriter Marc Benno also lends his impressive, laid-back guitar work all throughout the album. His "Donut Man" adds an air of lazy funk to the proceedings. Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" probably gets the most soulful reading, with Coolidge's take on Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" following close behind. Kris Kristofferson is represented at the tail end of the album with the title track. She may not have had the most distinctive of voices, but Coolidge definitely captured the sort of laid-back energy and approach associated with early-'70s country-rock. If Rita Coolidge's voice and stellar class of backing musicians aren't enough to sway you, consider the cover that shows her bedecked in what looks to be several pounds of turquoise, or the gatefold in which she appears pensive, with Stonehenge not too far in the background. - All Music Guide

MOTT THE HOOPLE - Mott The Hoople (1969)
320
"Mott the Hoople" is the debut album by the band of the same name. It was produced by Guy Stevens and released in 1969 by Island Records. Stevens, the group's mentor and guide, wanted to create an album that would sest Bob Dylan singing with the Rolling Stones. This was partially achieved, though the stand-out song was, perhaps, guitarist Mick Ralphs' "Rock and Roll Queen" which curiously predicts Mott's signature sound of three years later. The album featured a number of Dylanesque cover versions and some aggressive underground rock originals. In fact, vocalist Ian Hunter had only just joined the band prior to the recording and the album was made before the band had even played live together. An instrumental version of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me" introduces the album, though a vocal version was recorded and is available on Two Miles From Heaven. Doug Sahms' "At the Crossroads" and Sonny Bono's "Laugh at Me" are suitably reminiscent of Bob Dylan, as is Hunter's "Backsliding Fearlessly". Initial copies of the album were wrongly pressed with "The Road to Birmingham", the flip side of their debut single, replacing "Rock and Roll Queen". - Wiki

MOTT THE HOOPLE - Mad Shadows (1970)

"Mad Shadows" was the second album by Mott the Hoople. As with their debut album it was produced by Guy Stevens. The original title, Sticky Fingers, was dropped when The Rolling Stones used it for their own record. Indeed, Mick Jagger sang backing vocals on the song "Walkin' with a Mountain". The album was notable for its darker, heavier sound, and oppressive cover artwork. The final track of the original album, "When my mind's gone", was allegedly performed by Hunter under producer Stevens' hypnotic influence. Although the album received mixed reviews and sold poorly "Walkin' with a mountain"remained a live favourite until the band folded.

BONNIE RAITT - Longing In Their Hearts (1994)
320
On the follow-up to the follow-up (and another million-selling number one hit), Bonnie Raitt contributes more than her usual share of original songs, writing four songs herself and setting a lyric of her husband's to music for a fifth. Elsewhere, she draws on such strong writers as Richard Thompson and Paul Brady, all for a collection devoted to devotion. Song after song expresses passion, usually with happy results -- this is not the album of a woman with the blues. Even when she's dressing down a parent in her own "Circle Dance," Raitt offers forgiveness and understanding. There, and in other songs, the object of her emotions rarely seems to be perfect, but she takes that in and loves him, anyway. Co-producer Don Was provides a detailed production in which single elements -- an accordion, a harmony vocal by Levon Helm or David Crosby -- effectively color arrangements and complement Raitt's always soulful singing.

THE STRANGLERS - Greatest Hits 1977-1990 (1991)
320
For all but the absolutely obsessive, GREATEST HITS 1977-1990 is the definitive Stranglers album, and the only completely necessary purchase. Even in the group's earliest days, The Stranglers owed more to the Doors than they did to the Stooges, and they were really only a punk band by association. Yobbish, borderline-offensive songs like "Peaches," however, soon gave way to an oddly poppy post-punk sound that often made their singles extremely entertaining. For example, the throbbing "Duchess," featuring the most hyperactive bass playing this side of early John Entwistle, is a classic of its era, as is the delicate, waltz-time ode to the joys of heroin, "Golden Brown." However, the group's albums remained incredibly inconsistent - 1981's MENINBLACK was a horrid, inscrutable concept album about aliens - and so this singles anthology remains the best way to discover this uneven but often intriguing band. Proceed with caution after this, however.

JOHN HAMMOND - Got Love If You Want It (1992)
320
This is one of the best efforts of John Hammond's career. It features the old blues numbers that have been a staple of Hammond's work, but with a slippery, playful funkiness that was never there before. Hammond has always had a strong voice, and the music flows out of him more naturally and appealingly than ever before. In fact, he sounds so at ease that he falls right in with Charles Brown on the two numbers where Mr. "Drifting Blues" himself plays piano. Little Charlie & the Nightcats back up Hammond on seven of the album's dozen tracks. They introduce an easy-going swing to numbers by Little Walter, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and Howlin' Wolf that allows Hammond to give these old songs a new spin and make them his own.

ROD PIAZZA & THE MIGHTY FLYERS BLUES QUARTET
- Thrillville (2007)

A California-based blues bandleader, harmonica player, and singer, Rod Piazza's stratospheric harmonica wailings owe a heavy debt to both Little Walter and George "Harmonica" Smith. Piazza began his professional career as a member of the Dirty Blues Band in the mid-'60s. The Dirty Blues Band recorded two albums for ABC/Bluesway -- an eponymous debut in 1967 and 1968's Stone Dirty. Piazza left the band after the release of Stone Dirty, choosing to hit the road with his idol George "Harmonica" Smith instead. Over the next decade and a half, Piazza and Smith performed together frequently under the name Bacon Fat; they also recorded the occasional album. In 1969, Bacon Fat released their eponymous debut album on Blue Horizon. While he was performing with Smith, Piazza released his own solo albums, the first of which - Rod Piazza Blues Man -- appeared on LMI in 1973. The second, Chicago Flying Saucer Band, was released in 1979 on Gangster Records.

She was barely a teenager when she was turned on to rhythm and blues by the local Detroit, Michigan radio stations and the influences of Etta James, Billie Holiday, Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Aretha Franklin, Memphis Minnie & Koko Taylor are apparent, but with her vast performance and studio experience, Janiva Magness has developed a unique style rightfully her own. Her soul, stage presence and formidable vocal power never fail to please blues music fans wherever she appears. To quote blues harp master Charlie Musslewhite, "Janiva Magness always knocks me out because she has such style and poise on stage and she hits every note she sings just right - perfect every time." Do yourself a favor, when you get a moment, check her out yourself.
"What Love Will Do", co-produced by Magness along with Dave Darling (Brian Setzer, Tom Waits), features 13 powerful songs each imbued with Magness' expressive emotional depth. Magness reaches heights only hinted at in her previous recordings, interpreting new material written especially for her and songs from Little Milton, Tina Turner, Bill Withers, Al Green, Candi Staton, Dorothy Moore, and Marvin Gaye. Her impassioned singing takes each song from deep within her being and projects it out directly into the heart and soul of her audience, making What Love Will Do essential listening for blues, roots, rock and soul music lovers everywhere.

THE WHO - Who's Next (1971)
320
While both "The Who Sell Out" and "Tommy" have their passionate devotees, WHO'S NEXT is the Who's masterpiece. Originally, Pete Townshend intended these songs for an even larger-scale project than "Tommy", a massive multimedia extravaganza, called "Lifehouse", that the songwriter eventually abandoned. Townshend was initially keen to keep at least the basic structure of the story for the Who's next record, but associate producer Glyn Johns convinced him that a straightforward single disc of the project's best songs would make a stronger album. Wise counsel indeed, because WHO'S NEXT is by far the group's most focused and powerful effort. Bracketed by "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again," two classic rock epics that did more to advance the cause of synthesizers in mainstream rock than Kraftwerk's entire career, this album is basically flawless, ranging in mood from the heartbreaking "The Song Is Over" to John Entwistle's bitterly funny "My Wife." Although nearly every song on the record, barring only the bluesy acoustic interlude "Love Ain't for Keeping," is a saturation-level FM-rock-radio mainstay, WHO'S NEXT is that rarity--an intimately familiar album that never gets tiresome.

EMMYLOU HARRIS - All I Intended To Be (2008)
192
Country legend Emmylou Harris follows up "All The Roadrunning", her 2006 collaboration with Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler, and 2007's hits and rarities collection "Songbird", with "All I Intended To Be", her twenty-fourth solo studio album since her career began nearly forty years ago, and the first since "Stumble Into Grace" in 2003. Continuing to mine the seam of indie- and world-influenced folk she first began to explore in the 1990s, Harris continues to make some of the most proficient and bewitching music of her career. Harris covers songs by Tracy Chapman, Merle Haggard, Patty Griffin, and Billy Joe Shaver. Guests on the album include Dolly Parton as well as musicians who have played with Elvis Presley and Little Feat. Kate and Anna McGarrigle co-wrote and performed on two songs on the record. All was produced by Brian Ahern, who worked on some of Harris's classic early albums.

TRACY NELSON
- Homemade Songs & Come See About Me (1996)

320
Tracy Nelson really came into her own as a solo artist with these two LP's (now combined on one CD) in the late seventies and early eighties. Previous efforts on Atlantic and MCA were fine in their way but a bit strained. Here she sounds comfortable and strong. Apparently Flying Fish gave her the leeway that the bigger labels did not. What I didn't realize at the time was that after these efforts and a subsequent Direct-to-Disc release (Doin' It My Way - words that Tracy lives by from what I know about her)she would virtually disappear for over a decade. That made these releases all the more valuable to me. The albums reflect her blues, country and folk influences. But most of all they present Tracy Nelson at her vocal best--strong, clear, emotionally rich singing that will make people who have never heard her wonder why she's not a superstar. It's hard to recommend any one TN release, but this one is a certainly a good intro.
In 1996, Flying Fish released Homemade Songs/Come See About Me, which contained two complete albums - Homemade Songs (1978 and Come See About Me (1980), both originally released on Flying Fish -- by Tracy Nelson on one compact disc.

T BONE BURNETT - Tooth of Crime (2008)
320
T Bone's new album is an outgrowth of a long-running collaboration with playwright Sam Shepard that began with the 1996 musical staging of his noted play Tooth of Crime (Second Dance) in New York. The songs are distillations of modern conflicts and personal drama in a modern hyper-reality. Following Burnett's highly praised 2006 album The True False Identity, this new collection is the realization of years of work to fully capture the inspiration of Shepard's forceful ideas. Burnett, best known as producer to the stars (Robert Plant/Alison Krauss, John Mellencamp) and curator of soundtracks (The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou?), started writing these songs years ago for a revamped production of Sam Shepard's 1972 play of the same name, about a washed-up rock star.

OLI BROWN - Open Road (2008)

The great British blues players, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Peter Green among others, conquered the world in the early sixties - appearing to leave unequivocal magic in their wake. There have been times since, when it was hard to see anything like a credible follow-up to these legends. If you ever worried for the future of the blues, then fret no longer. Oli Brown is the real deal, ready to carry the torch of British Blues in the 21st century, taking inspiration from today's contemporary bluesmen like Aynsley Lister. Already paying his dues, Oli has shared a stage with giants Koko Taylor, Walter Trout, John Mayall and Buddy Guy. "Open Road" will take you on a journey through Blues City, where the musical architecture is splendidly diverse - sublime use of light and shade is Oli's speciality, a gift so rare, it is easy to see that the new generation of the blues is in safe hands. Taking a trip down this open road will enable you to feel more than just the wind in your hair - you'll feel the destiny of the blues for a modern age.

BILLY SQUIRE - 16 Strokes: The Best Of (1995)
320
All of Billy Squier's best material is dished out on 16 Strokes, from the simplistic contagiousness of "The Stroke" to the Van Halen-like fervency of "Tied Up." His rock & roll flamboyancy, a mix of hard but not heavy guitar riffs wrapped around spirited just-for-fun three-minute outpourings, was best established through his singles and not the entirety of his albums. Squier's wild, sexually inundated feistiness is best represented here on a compilation, where the sleekness of "Everybody Wants You" is found in the same place as the naughty "She Goes Down." Both "In the Dark" and "My Kinda Lover" from 1981's Don't Say No pop up here, as does his smoothest of songs, "Emotions in Motion" from the album of the same name. His later songs from the early '90s don't include the catchy grandeur or congenial rock hollowness of his first three albums, but their appearance on 16 Strokes is the best place to hear them. Efforts like the bombastic "Don't Say You Love Me" or the transparent sincerity of "Facts of Life" still harbor Squier's greasy vocal approach, but work better here as the conclusion to a singles anthology than as the end of an album's worth of this song type. The keyboard-drenched "Rock Me Tonite" is another highlight here, as is the breakneck pace of "All Night Long," the two best outcrops from 1984's Signs of Life album. This collection may not be as indulgent as his two-disc best-of, but it's more than enough for anyone who's interested. All Music Guide

LEONARD COHEN - Various Positions (1984)
320
This 1984 album was the last of Cohen's folk masterpieces (with a touch of country) and shines in its rich variety of styles, poignant lyrics and lovely melodies. His gift for sexual and political metaphor is evident in songs like Dance Me To The End Of Love and The Night Comes On, while his familiar spiritual themes are further explored on The Law, Hallelujah and If It Be Your Will. Some of Cohen's most sentimental and thoughtful lyrics persist here. From the "love conquers all" mysticism of Dance Me To The End of Love to the religious ambivalence of Hallelujah (which contains the nominal verse "You say I used the name in vain/But I don't even know the name/But if I did, well really, what's it to ya?/There's a blaze of light in every word/It doesn't matter which one you heard/The holy or the broken hallejulah"), to the poignant, touching war story The Captain, Cohen is a lyrical genius here. This album is also notable because it is the last one where Cohen has complete control over his voice. Indeed, since it also manages to do without the keyboards and such that would come to dominate the textures of his next two album (particularly I'm Your Man) you could call this the last of Leonard Cohen's folk-styled albums. A must for any fan of his.

VOICES ON THE DARK SIDE
- Dark Side Of The Moon A Cappella (2005)

"Vocomotion" is an a cappella-only recording studio and record label based near Chicago, owned by multi-talented Freddie Feldman, who has been immersed in the world of a cappella for over a decade, as a singer, producer, arranger, composer, recording engineer and vocal percussionist. He is a major CASA player, and is currently lead singer for the band Gaskit and vocal percussionist for Absolute Harmony. He has produced 30 a cappella albums at Vocamotion, winning several BOCA and CARA recording awards. Pink Floyd's masterpiece and one of the best-selling rock albums of all time, "Dark Side" is vocally recreated here by 8 singers and 1 vocal percussionist, and the results are fairly stunning. Of course, many people know these 9 tunes by heart: "Speak to Me/Breathe," "On the Run," "Time," "Money," "Us and Them" and others, but the envelope that the recording pushes goes way beyond being able to better understand what the lyrics actually were. Floyd used synthesizers and audio effects to create their haunting sound, and it's totally cool to hear the voices riff on a creating a particularly difficult beloved passage, and succeeding. Recorded in High Definition, without breaks between the tracks, and as close to the original timing as possible, lovers of a cappella and/or of rock will want and need to hear "Dark Side," to be amazed again by the power of the human voice. - Singers.com

RARE EARTH - Earth Tones:
The Essential Rare Earth (1994)

Rare Earth is an American rock band affiliated with Motown's Rare Earth record label (which was named after the band) who were particularly famous in the late-1960s and 1970s. Clocking in at 75 minutes, this single-CD release is probably as much Rare Earth as most casual fans want (even though it only contains nine songs), and as a mid-priced item it's doubly attractive. Among the highlights included here are the nearly seven-minute long, promo-only version of "Warm Ride," and the nearly 11-minute version of "(I Know) I'm Losing You," the 12-minute version of "I Couldn't Believe What Happened Last Night," the killer 21-minute "Get Ready," plus the more modestly proportioned "Hey Big Brother," "Ma," "I Just Want to Celebrate," and "Satisfaction Guaranteed." Motown also has a double-CD anthology which features an additional hour of music and then some, but that's more than twice as expensive and only intended for the most serious fans. The sound is also a selling point, this collection have originated from Polygram's stewardship of the Motown library, all first-generation tapes processed through state-of-the-art digital technology.

CANNED HEAT - The Best of Canned Heat (1972)
320
"Best of Canned Heat" is a great collection of the best of this great blues band which formed in the late-60's. Many music fans know the band today from their inclusions on several '60s compliations that have been released like Revolution Rock and their participation at Woodstock in 1969. While Woodstock was certainly their high point, Canned Heat were different from many bands from that era, concentrating on their blues roots rather than singing of free love, psychedelia, or protesting the changing times.

LEFT LANE CRUISER - Bring Yo' Ass To The Table (2008)
256
This whiskey fueled two-man frenzy of blues-driven rock'n'roll noise straight from Fort Wayne, Indiana promise to hit you like a shock wave and show you a foot-stompin' good time. Left Lane Cruiser is comprised of Joe Evans on slide guitar and vocals with Brenn Beck on one big-ass bass drum, harmonica and a toolbox full of percussive gear. The raw blues duo of LLC have practiced through thick and thin to hone a sound unlike any other and have been together long enough to have previously released a couple of self-produced EPs. "Let your soul drive what you do" is the premise of their music, "give it all you got, and everything is an instrument: trash cans, paint trays, hubcaps, ladders, you name it." Learning their craft by playing at house parties, at the corner streets of their home town, and rehearsing in a heatless garage, they have developed their personal take on the North Mississippi Hill Country sound. They have toured relentlessly, sharing the stage with artists such as Robert Belfour, Black Diamond Heavies, Hillstomp, and Chris Cotton among others. They have also appeared at the infamous Deep Blues festival in River Falls Wisconsin in 2007. "Bring Yo' Ass To The Table" is the culmination of everything these boys have experienced as a band during the four years of their existence, it's "greasy hot, shaved dry, and crazier than your smokin' methed-up ex-girlfriend who keeps singin' ÔDown By The River I Shot My Baby' thru a two-dollar pawn shop mic she jerry-rigged thru that ol' gunshot black & white TV in the backyard and dedicating it to you with love m*therf*cker" to quote Deep Blues guru Rick Saunders.

GEORGE HARRISON - Somewhere In England (1981)
320
Despite the turmoil surrounding the recording of "Somewhere in England", the outing actually was reasonably strong, though it forever may be tagged with questions about what it could have become. Indeed, there were many behind-the-scenes tales about the creation of the album, most notably that it wasn’t the song cycle that George Harrison wanted to release, but Warner Bros. rejected his original concept on the basis that four tracks — Flying Hour, Lay His Head, Sat Singing, and Tears of the World — held no commercial viability. Then, as Harrison was reformulating the collection, John Lennon was fatally shot outside his New York City home, and the false pretenses of a reunion by The Beatles began circulating around the single All Those Years Ago. Granted, the remaining trio did perform on the song, but the collaboration was fabricated. The tune, along with the industry-bashing Blood from a Clone, the lighthearted Teardrops, and the spiritually enlightening That which I Have Lost replaced the four excised tracks, and all were given the peppy, pop-oriented sheen for which the label had been searching.

SOUTHERN COMFORT - Southern Comfort (1969)
256
"Southern Comfort" is the result of a spur of the moment idea in minds of blues fanatics, Peter Shertser and Ian Sippen, who seized the opportunity to record Chicago blues greats, Walter "Shakey" Horton, Jerome Arnold and Jesse C. Lewis, Together with Martin Stone, one of England's most highly recognized blues guitarists and a former member of the legendary Savoy Brown Blues band. Arnold, former bass player with Paul Butterfield, Lewis, a long time Otis Rush band member and the legendary harp player, Shakey Horton, who is perhaps best known for his long association with the Muddy Waters and Jimmy Rogers band, were all in England playing blues festivals. It is important to bear in mind that this album was recorded in great haste necessitated by the tight appearance schedules of the visiting Chicago musicians. Nevertheless, OZ magazine, in its March 1969 issue, called this album one of the best blues albums, one that "deserves to sell on its own merits which are considerable" and should be "an encouragement to other record companies to make a concerted effort in rising the standard of future blues releases."

Nanci Griffith is an American singer, guitarist and songwriter. "Once in a Very Blue Moon" is Griffith's third album. The sounds have become a little more country and a little less folk than her previous albums. Her first two albums were backed sparsely with instrumentation, but starting with this album, the whole complement of country-styled instrumentalists can be heard. Noted country musicians performing on the album include banjo player Béla Fleck and champion fiddle player Mark O'Connor.
