LOU REED - Animal Serenade (2004)
320
Though the two-disc ANIMAL SERENADE is the sixth live Lou Reed album, it never feels like a rehash of what's come before. This is partly because of its delightful focus on the more obscure corners of Reed's repertoire, and partly due to the unusual format in which the songs are presented. Though Reed's previous live release already employed a scaled-down approach, ANIMAL SERENADE removes the drummer entirely (bassist Fernando Saunders occasionally hits electronic drum pads), and adds a cellist. This gives extra poignancy to reflective ballads like "The Day John Kennedy Died" and the gorgeously bittersweet Velvet Underground net "Candy Says" (quavering tenor Antony is guest vocalist on the latter). The band can still kick up a respectable ruckus on the more up-tempo tunes, though; NEW YORK's "Dirty Blvd." is turned into an extended rhythmic tour de force and Reed kicks up some dust on the harrowing BERLIN track "How Do You Think It Feels." The notoriously taciturn Reed also seems to be genuinely enjoying himself, the brooding artiste engaging in playful banter with the crowd and going out of his way to play the role of entertainer for his enraptured audience.
Recorded live at The Wiltern, Los Angeles, California on June 24, 2003.

NINA SIMONE - Nina Simone Sings the Blues (1967)
320
"Nina Simone Sings the Blues" issued in 1967, was her RCA label debut, and was a brave departure from the material she had been recording for Phillips Indeed, her final album for that label, High Priestess of Soul featured the singer, pianist, and songwriter fronting a virtual orchestra. Here, Simone is backed by a pair of guitarists (Eric Gale and Rudy Stevenson , bassist (Bob Bushnell , drummer (Bernard "Pretty" Purdie , organist (Ernie Hayes , and harmonica player who doubled on saxophone (Buddy Lucas . Simone handled the piano chores. The song selection is key here. Because for all intents and purposes this is perhaps the rawest record Simone ever cut.

WILLIE NELSON - Red Headed Stranger (1975)
320
Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger" perhaps is the strangest blockbuster country produced, a concept album about a preacher on the run after murdering his departed wife and her new lover, told entirely with brief song-poems and utterly minimal backing. It's defiantly anticommercial and it demands intense concentration -- all reasons why nobody thought it would be a hit, a story related in Chet Flippo's liner notes to the 2000 reissue. It was a phenomenal blockbuster, though, selling millions of copies, establishing Nelson as a superstar recording artist in its own right. For all its success, it still remains a prickly, difficult album, though, making the interspersed concept of Phases and Stages sound shiny in comparison. It's difficult because it's old-fashioned, sounding like a tale told around a cowboy campfire. Now, this all reads well on paper, and there's much to admire in Nelson's intimate gamble, but it's really elusive, as the themes get a little muddled and the tunes themselves are a bit bare. It's undoubtedly distinctive - and it sounds more distinctive with each passing year - but it's strictly an intellectual triumph and, after a pair of albums that were musically and intellectually sound, it's a bit of a letdown, no matter how successful it was. ~ All Music Guide

ZZ TOP - Rancho Texicano:
The Very Best Of ZZ Top (2004)
320
Since Rhino released an exhaustive four-disc ZZ Top box in October 2003, some may question the appearance of a double-disc retrospective in June 2004, a mere eight months after the box set. The two may be released awfully close to each other, but they do play to different audiences -- in other words, there are a bunch of fans who want all the hits, but not a full box set, and that's what the 38-track Rancho Texicano: The Very Best of ZZ Top delivers. Not that it gets everything right - there are a few classic album cuts, like "Leila" and "I Got the Six," that probably should have been included, and ending the set with a live version of "Cheap Sunglasses" and 12" remixes of "Legs" and "Velcro Fly" leaves a bad aftertaste -- but it gets it close enough, containing all of their biggest hits and a great cross-section of album tracks and AOR favorites. And apart from the aforementioned bewildering final three tracks, it's sequenced well, with the down-n-dirty '70s material on the first disc, and the MTV hits from the '80s on the second. There's still a need for a single-disc that has all the biggest hits, but until that comes along, Rancho Texicano is the best and most concise overview of that lil' ol' band from Texas. - All Music Guide

DR.JOHN - Mos' Scocious:
The Dr.John Anthology (1993)
320
This two-disc set spans over 30 years of music by New Orleans' own Mac Rebennack, a.k.a. Dr. John. The earliest songs date from the '50s, when, as a teenager, he'd already made a name for himself as a guitarist. Studio work gave him inside glimpses of the working methods of Huey Smith, Allen Toussaint, Dave Bartholomew, and others. Drawing on the rich heritage of his hometown, he was already penning songs before he turned 20. Professor Longhair's influence can be heard in Rebennack's piano playing, as well as in his own contemporary's, James Booker. Rebennack had more than a dozen years of experience under his belt when he first successfully "emerged" as Dr. John in the late '60s. His colorfully festooned stage shows carried him well into the '70s, after which he turned out some stellar solo piano works, fine New Orleans funk and even some standards. All of the above are well represented on this essential collection.

MEM SHANNON - A Cab Driver's Blues (1995)
320
Shannon really was a New Orleans cabbie when this CD was made, and his concept of interspersing conversational snippets from some of his fares between his autobiographical blues vignettes is inspired. Fortunately, he also has the talent to take it beyond novelty status. Combining unhurried guitar picking with a burly, dialectically southern voice that's just right for his beleaguered everyman persona, Shannon's abiding strength is his funny, incisive compositions. His lyrics carry the gift of gab, from the woman who "bought Cadillac hubcaps for earrings/and a dress lit up like a Christmas tree" on "My Baby's Been Watching TV," to the conversational father-son rapport that resonates through "Play the Guitar Son." Shannon's offhand poetry deepens what would otherwise be a competent arsenal of blues skills. He's the sort of character who drives around with the weight of the world on his shoulders that he can temporarily get rid of with a single shrug.

ROBERT CRAY - Take Your Shoes Off (1999)
320
As always, the talented guitarist's choice of covers is an interesting mix. Willie Dixon's "Tollin' Bells" is presented with brushed drums and a reverberating chord that eerily replicates the song's title. Most interesting is a reading of Solomon Burke's "Won't You Give Him (One More Chance)" that finds Cray being joined by Cajun accordionist Jo-El Sonnier on an arrangement that Taj Mahal might have sested.

In the early-mid '90s, the "unpled" album was king. Such classic rock artists as Eric Clapton scored huge hits with the acoustic format, and just about every rock act followed in issuing a stripped down and intimate set, including Lynyrd Skynyrd with 1994's ENDANGERED SPECIES. Versions of Skynyrd's classic tunes are featured for the most part, but newer selections round out the collection as well, however it's acoustic versions of "Sweet Home Alabama," "Saturday Night Special," "Down South Jukin'," and "I Ain't the One" that longtime fans will want to hear most. Credit should also go to producer Barry Beckett (a longtime regular at the famed Muscle Shoals recording studio), who helps Skynyrd achieve a sparkling yet warm sound throughout. LINDA RONSTADT & ANN SAVOY
- Adieu False Heart (2006)
320
This teaming of Linda Ronstadt and Cajun folk traditionalist Ann Savoy, billing themselves as the Zozo Sisters, shows how wide is the musical range of bittersweetness. The harmonies and shared lead vocals offer a complementary contrast between Ronstadt's purity of tone and Savoy's more piquant expressiveness. The arrangements turn folk songs into art songs, drawing as much upon chamber strings as Cajun fiddle and accordion. There's an exquisite beauty to the vocals, but the real surprise is how well the album holds together, given a range of material that extends from Cajun songs in French patois to stellar material from Julie Miller ("I Can't Get Over You," with husband Buddy Miller on guitar) and Richard Thompson ("King of Bohemia," "Burns' Supper") to a disarming revival of the Left Banke's 1960s hit "Walk Away Renee." Among other highlights, "Go Away from My Window" provides a showcase for the upper register of Ronstadt's soprano, and Savoy's lead vocals on Bill Monroe's "The One I Love Is Gone" bring out the blues in bluegrass.

LEON RUSSELL - Leon Russell And The Shelter People (1971)
320
Leon Russell's second album, "Leon Russell & The Shelter People", has the feel of a rollicking road show. In fact, many of the players who appear here had been out on the road under Russell's direction as Joe Cocker's backing band, Mad Dogs & Englishmen (a fact chronicled on this album in "The Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishmen"). The original album was made up of eight Russell originals, two Bob Dylan covers, and a song by George Harrison (an incredible version of "Beware of Darkness"). This CD reissue has been extended to include three additional Dylan covers. The variety--country, gospel, blues, soul, and rock & roll--is seamlessly woven together by Russell's good-natured Oklahoma twang. The set is paced to move and groove listeners in a way that is reminiscent of an old fashioned revue. In addition, "Leon Russell & The Shelter People" is anchored by some of the finest rhythm sections, soloists, and chorus singers of the time.

TRACY NELSON & MOTHER EARTH

Janis Joplin may have gotten all of the fame and glory, but she was far from the only white female blues shouter to emerge from the San Francisco music scene of the mid-'60s; "The Best of Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth" is proof positive of that, providing an excellent introduction to one of the more sadly overlooked talents of her time and place. Despite any number of passing similarities to Joplin, Nelson sings with greater finesse; her style is more adaptable as well, capable of fitting comfortably into R&B, psychedelia, and pop ballads, all the while remaining grounded in classic roots music traditions. Highlighted by her perennial "Down So Low" - subsequently recorded by everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Etta James - this 17-track compilation also spotlights performances spanning from a wrenching cover of Little Willie John's "Need Your Love So Bad" to contemporary material like Steve Young's "Seven Bridges Road" and John Hiatt's "Thinking of You," offering a comprehensive overview of her earliest and most enduring work.

ALANIS MORISSETTE - Flavors Of Entanglement (2008)

The first studio album from Alanis Morissette since 2004, "Flavors Of Entanglement" fuses the organic and the techno prompted by producer Guy Sigsworth (Madonna, Björk). Incorporating beats, loops and synthesizers, the album was designed, says Morissette, so listeners can dance your face off. Balancing introspective confession and delirious joy, the global and the personal, "Flavors Of Entanglement" is a tasty new musical feast from one of pop's most intriguing artists.

DANIELIA COTTON - Rare Child (2008)

Naming Led Zeppelin, Tina Turner, and Joe Cocker as primary influences, Cotton not only sings with a tone that's warm, buttery, and sexual, she pierces the sky with rock shouts, screams, and cries. Danielia is a force of nature to be reckoned with, and the sheer joy and pain she evokes in her songs draws the listener in instantly and completely. Not unlike male rock counterparts Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone or crossover icons Mavis Staples and Tina Turner, Cotton is quite comfortable being a black rock goddess. Danielia Cotton is a name that you should remember because it is the name of one of the more exciting soulful talents to arise in this era of Rock music.

THE MOVE - Movements: 30th Anniversary Anthology (1997)
320
The Move were one of the leading British rock bands of the 1960s from England. The Move were led by guitarist, singer and songwriter Roy Wood, who composed all the group's UK singles and from 1968 also sang lead vocal on many of them. They were extremely successful in Britain in their early career, scoring nine Top 20 UK singles in five years, but they were not as well known in the United States, mainly because they did not tour there until the latter part of their career. Nevertheless, they have been credited as an influence on many later groups on both sides of the Atlantic.
MOVEMENTS is a 54-song, three-CD set comprising the entire 1967-1970 output of Roy Wood's classic art-pop band. The self-titled first album is nothing but magnificently weird pop gems like the "1812 Overture"-quoting "Night of Fear", "Disturbance", and the brilliantly psychedelic "Cherry Blossom Clinic" and "I Can Hear the Grass Grow" interspersed with gentle tunes like "The Girl Outside" and a whacked-out cover of "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart". A weird mixture of classical influences and proto-metal, the third album, LOOKING ON, is less immediately engaging than the Move's earlier material but repays close listening. The second half of the third CD is a great set of eight covers recorded live at the Marquee, including punky versions of Love's "Stephanie Knows Who" and the Byrds' "So You Want To Be a Rock and Roll Star".

REPOST/REUPLOAD WITH FULL SCANS (front, back, booklet...)
The live soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's documentary of the Rolling Stones' concerts at New York's Beacon Theater.
The accompanying live album captures the pure magic of a high-energy rock show performed in a small venue, offering a mix of crowd-pleasers ("Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Brown Sugar") and set-list oddities like the cheeky "Some Girls" or the feverish, rarely played "She Was Hot," which sizzles with mean guitar licks. Mick Jagger and the boys throw a curveball and bring out Christina Aguilera, who rocks her vocal acrobatics on "Live With Me," and Jack White of the White Stripes guests on "Loving Cup," one of the best moments. Much more dazzling than the guest list: More than 40 years into their career, the Stones sound raw and dangerously alive.

JOE COCKER - Respect Yourself (2002)
320
Joe Cocker's ability to charge songs with passion, drama, and emotion is legendary. He first gained acclaim for turning the Beatles' sentimental "With a Little Help from My Friends" into a spine-tingling epic. On a good day, he can make a shopping list soar. It's a rare talent that Respect Yourself, his 20th studio album, depends on. The smoldering "Love Not War" and fantastically overblown soul stomper "You Can't Have My Heart" are undeniably brilliant, as Cocker puts his bluesy growl to spectacular use. There are plenty of vague rockers, too, including "This Is Your Life" and "Leave a Light On," which find Cocker working overtime to make them exciting. Invariably, he pulls it off, even managing to make the bluesy "I'm Listening Now" sound brooding and heartfelt. While most of the album's covers--including Randy Newman's blear-eyed "Everytime It Rains" and the swaggering title track--are prime for the Cocker treatment, his exaggerated bluster clumsily tramples the tender beauty of INXS's "Never Tear Us Apart." Still, it's the only must-skip moment in a mixed bag that proves Cocker remains a potent force.

WILLIE NELSON - Countryman (2005)

![]()
Originally conceived of 10 years ago by his former label boss at the Jamaica based Island Records, Willie Nelson’s first reggae album sat, as many unreleased albums due, “shelved” until a former Island staffer went to work with Willie’s current record label, Lost Highway Records. With Willie’s noted history with a certain plant and Jamaica’s ties to the same plant, it only seems natural and obvious that Willie Nelson would, at some point in his career release an album packed with reggae songs. While the marriage of reggae and country music seems like an odd match, Willie generally pulls it off. He doesn’t get every song right but this 10 year old recording is interesting nonetheless. Songs like the lead-off track “Something To Think About,” the delightful cover of Johnny Cash’s “I’m A Worried Man” with Reggae artist Toots Hibbert, the two Jimmy Cliff covers “The Harder They Come” and “Sitting In Limbo” and the best track on the whole set, “I’ll Still Be Thinking Of You.” One song that doesn’t work on any level is “Darkness On The Face Of The Earth.” The lyrics don’t match the “joyous” sound of the Reggae arrangement. Still, with only one truly “bad” track, Willie Nelson’s long-time-comin’ reggae-country album is an interesting recording to say the least. As such, “Countryman” is a record for the Willie Nelson die hard fans and/or “completists” and Reggae fans.

TRACY NELSON - Ebony & Irony (2001)
320
With over 30 years in the biz, and 20 albums to her credit, Tracy Nelson is one of those hard-workin’ mamas who won’t quit until the earth is shoveled up over her. Late of the group Mother Earth (which she founded) from the 60s, Tracy continues to blend soulful rocknroll with country riffs and blues sense into Bonnie Raitt-style vocals. Power and sensitivity, on equal ground. Difficult ground to make successful music on. The 12 tracks and 44 minutes tend to collect up songs for their vocal value rather than any thematic association. She’ll go from the gospel-pop-ringing opener ‘You Will Find Me There’ to Helen Reddy’s horn an’ bass 70s reign that sparkles in ‘Strongest Weakness,’ the single, and the single best.

JOHN LEE HOOKER - It Serve You Right To Suffer (1965)
320
Originally released on Impulse in 1965, "It Serves You Right to Suffer" may not contain John Lee Hooker's better-known material, but it does serve up eight tracks of topnotch blues, complete with the boogie groove that Hooker does so well. The digital remastering for this CD is a blessing; the recording sounds almost as clean as one made today. That prevents the listener from being distracted from this album's many delights: the uptempo, low-key "Shake It Baby"; the relaxed but rhythmically tight "Country Boy"; the danceable "Bottle Up & Go"; and the slow, sexy shuffle of "Sugar Mama." Especially worth hearing, however, is the title track, which strikes a perfect tension between musicality and mood.

JONI MITCHELL & THE L.A. EXPRESS
- Miles Of Aisles (1974)
VBR
A 1974 live effort recorded with backing band The L.A. Express, "Miles Of Aisles" consists of fairly straightforward versions of songs from the Canadian songstress's first five (pre "Court And Spark") albums. Although the record includes some soulful, Santana-esque lead guitar work from Robben Ford, and an extremely tight rhythm section, the best tracks are the ones where Mitchell is accompanied only by her own acoustic guitar or piano. In this setting Mitchell is better able, both vocally and emotionally, to navigate the subtle peaks and valleys of her early material.

CLOUT - Substitute (1978)
320
One of the, if not the, first all-female rockband which was controversial from the start since they originated from South-Africa. The band had an instant hit with a cover of a The Righteous Brothers song, "Substitute" which was #1 in no less than 7 countries. In 1981 the band split, after confirmed rumours that the band didn't play any instruments on their recordings, this was all done by a male band called Circus.

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND
- Brothers Of The Road (1981)
320
"Brothers of the Road" is the tenth album by the rock group the Allman Brothers Band. It was released in 1981. It is the band's only album not to include drummer Jai Johanny Johanson, who had been fired the previous year. "Straight from the Heart", written by Dickey Betts and Johnny Cobb and sung by Gregg Allman, is one of the group's better accommodations to pop music, and on the whole, this is an accessible version of their trademark sound: call it Allmans Lite. The ruling influence here may be Arista president Clive Davis, who also oversaw the pop-oriented Grateful Dead albums of the same period. But the main duty of pop music is to sell, and when this album petered out at #44, The Allmans called it quits for the second time.

ASH GRUNWALD - I Don't Believe (2004)
320
This guy simply sends shivers down the spine. Melbourne based Ash Grunwald has a voice that cuts through the hardest heart, especially evident in the rendition of Robert Johnson's "Cross Roads". At the recent Australian Blues Music Festival, it was this young man who had the youth captivated and the elders mesmerized. This album certainly does justice to the awesome talent that Ash displays in his live shows. With minimal sound invasion it proves that you don't have to be full on hard and fast to make an impact. From the mesmerizing sound loop and cutting vocals on the opening track "Everyday", Ash takes the listener on a historical journey with sounds of yesterday revamped to appeal to the youth of the new millenium.Several originals display this artists understanding of music, reinforced with covers of songs by Tom Waits, Howling Wolf & Chester Burnett, and also Son House.

DIXIE CHICKS - Top of the World Tour (Live) (2003)
320
With their blend of country, pop, rock, and forthright attitude, the Dixie Chicks took the country music world by stormin the late 1990s, after kicking around for several years with a slightly different lineup and recording for indie labels. This two-disc live album is something of a love letter to the trio's fans; not the fickle few who abandoned them forspeaking their minds about the U.S. government in a 2003 "scandal", but those who've always loved their energetic, from-the-heart approach to recording and (especially) performing. Though they're genuine pop stars, the Chicks display country roots here, as on the classic Ray Price-like shuffle of "Hello Mr. Heartache" and the bluegrass instrumental showpiece "Lil' Jack Slade", where the ladies show off their guitar and fiddle chops. They're still full of contemporary sass, though, as witnessed by the rowdy, irreverent leadoff cut "Goodbye Earl" and the breakneck "White Trash Wedding". And yes, Fleetwood Mac fans, their popular acoustic cover of "Landslide" is here, too.
Top of World Tour: Live is the first live album by American country band Dixie Chicks, released in 2003.

QUEEN - Made In Heaven (1995)
320
Not a posthumous collection of odds and ends but an album actually recorded in the final months of Freddie Mercury's strle with AIDS, MADE IN HEAVEN is full-force Queen. Their dynamic theatrics charge the album, as Mercury's unrivaled voice and the band's grand production aesthetic resound clearer than ever before. MADE IN HEAVEN captures all the explosiveness that made Queen one of the most magical big-rock bands of the '70s and '80s. Mercury's powerful voice soars toheights that mere pop singers simply aren't able to grasp. On "It's A Beautiful Day", and particularly on the song's refrain, his regal vocal prowess reminds the listener that this is a man who could sing opera but still rock harder than most heavy metal screamers. The rest of the band is equally brutal in its precision: Brian May's sophisticated guitar work, and the eloquent, sympathetic rhythm section of bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor make this collection of rock music a moving affair. Throughout their career, Queen beckoned the acceptance of a broader range of pop-rock. Mercury's vocals soared beyond the rock idiom, and May's dignified guitar arrangements may never be equaled. Freddie Mercury will be forever missed, but the unrestrained beauty of MADE IN HEAVEN captures him in a loving portrait.

QUEEN - Innuendo (1991)
320
"Innuendo" would turn out to be Queen's swan song, as it was the last album released during vocalist Freddie Mercury's lifetime-he passed away several months after the album's release. Expanding on the successful back-to-basics sound of 1989's "The Miracle", "Innuendo" was another solid outing. And like it's predecessor, it contains several tracks with lyrics that are clearly autobiographical for the band and especially Mercury, particularly "These Are the Days of Our Lives" and "The Show Must Go On," which deal with the topic of mortality.

A fine album by Roy Buchanan, a guitar hero who never quite made the big time. Exquisitely produced by Alligator Records, Roy gets a chance to stretch out and show what he can do with a guitar. BOB WELCH - French Kiss (1977)
320
Bob Welch is a former member of Fleetwood Mac, who had a briefly successful solo career in the late 1970s. Bob Welch's debut album saw him cash in on three Top 40 singles, refurbishing the romantic "Sentimental Lady" (originally from Fleetwood Mac's Bare Trees album) and taking it to number eight on the charts, with radio-tailored efforts like "Ebony Eyes" and "Hot Love, Cold World" following right behind. With not much success coming from Welch's short stint with his own Paris project, he decided to hire Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, and Christine McVie to help him out with his first solo venture. Spotlighting Welch's vocal powderiness, French Kiss ends up being a bunch of approachable soft pop tunes that display enough eager guitar work to keep them afloat. Presenting a sturdy feel for Welch on his own, tracks like "Easy to Fall," "Carolene," and "Lose My Heart" are equivalent to the hits in their familiar '70s rock formula, but cuts like "Dancin' Eyes" and "Danchiva" find Welch running out of room. Two years later, Welch released his second album, entitled Three Hearts, which gave him his last Top 40 hit with "Precious Love," but the album itself is noticeably weaker and less enthusiastic sounding than his first.

QUEEN - Pre Ordained (2003)
320
Prior to Queen's formation, there was a smattering of recordings laid down by the group's future members - most of which were unreleased or wallowed in obscurity. The tapes were eventually rediscovered after Freddie Mercury's passing, and led to such unofficial releases as Pre Ordained. Included are tracks that will be long familiar to hardcore fans who purchased bootleg versions years ago - including selections from the early Brian May/Roger Taylor outfit Smile, as well as solo Freddie Mercury tracks (issued under the alias Larry Lurex) and an actual Queen track (the wonderful "Mad the Swine") that was inexplicably left off their debut album initially before appearing on the Hollywood Records reissue. While most of these early tracks are certainly not up to the high standard set by Queen's later classics, there is a smattering of highlights, such as Smile's "Step On Me" and "Earth," while the Lurex tracks "I Can Hear Music" and "Going Back" prove that Mercury always possessed an exceptionally fine voice. If you're a fan of Queen's early music, then Pre Ordained may prove to be a worthy purchase.
Collection of early pre-fame recordings from Freddie, Brian, Roger and John and different variations of that line-up. Features the early Larry Lurex (ie: Freddie Mercury) single 'I Can Hear Music' and other rarities from the early '70s before they became one of the most successful bands of all time.

EDDIE FLOYD - Knock On Wood (1967)
320
In contrast to the 1970s - when artists ranging from Curtis Mayfield to Parliament/Funkadelic were praised for their albums - singles defined soul music in the 1960s. It has often been pointed out that many Stax and Motown albums of the '60s had their share of filler - nonetheless, others were full of gems that should have been released as singles. Reissued on CD in 1991, Knock on Wood is one of Eddie Floyd's best albums. The soul shouter successfully embraced sleeker northern soul on other projects, but here he sticks to the type of raw, hard-edged Memphis soul that Stax was first known for. From the unforgettable title song (a number one R&B hit) to covers of J.J. Jackson's "But It's Alright," Jerry Butler's "I Stand Accused," and Wilson Pickett's "634-5789," this CD beautifully illustrates the splendor of down-home Southern R&B.

"Christine McVie" (1984)
224
When Fleetwood Mac regrouped in 1975, trading its British blues pedigree for a sunnier Californian spin on pop rock, vocalist, songwriter, and keyboard linchpin Christine McVie fit right in, belying her English origins to prove comparatively mellow alongside the edgier Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks' brooding crystal visions and anguished confessions. This 1984 solo outing is predictably solid, paced by midtempo rockers and vulnerable ballads that showcase McVie's cool, velvety alto, tidily crafted songs, and blue chip session help from friends like Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Eric Clapton, and Steve Winwood, who pitch in behind McVie's own crisp quartet. The set's most enduring track remains the single hit, "Got a Hold on Me," featuring Winwood's signature synthesizers, but admirers of McVie's work with the platinum Mac will find other charms.

"In The Meantime" (2004)
256
Christine McVie, Fleetwood Mac's cool as an oyster chanteuse--ying to Stevie Nick's quirky yang--decided to pass on Mac's latest reunion efforts, prompting her former bandmates to insist that the icy blonde was fed up with the music business, and planned to retreat to her country home. But it seems that McVie was only fed up with her former compatriots, and stealthily recorded In the Meantime, her first solo album in two decades rather than participate in reconfiguring the seventies pop monolith. And just so we know she means business, she not-so-cryptically tackles the invitation from Mick, Stevie, Lindsay and John on the anxious and vituperrious "Bad Journey," leaving no doubt in fan's minds that she's shut the door on her past for good. Meantime finds the formerly winsome musician newly empowered with claws fully extended--penning songs that crackle with ire and ennui without any of the frothy self-deception of the past, whether on the casual hit-or-miss sex of "Anything is Possible" or the chilly kiss-off of "Sweet Revenge."

This isn't his most well-known stuff, but it's a very solid late '60s set. CHRISTINE PERFECT - The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions (2008)
320
Christine McVie (nee Perfect) is one of the great unsung talents of British blues and pop. Her work with Fleetwood Mac is often overshadowed by her more showy counterparts, Lindsay Buckingham, Peter Green or Stevie Nicks. She provided the spine to their material, and especially added a consistency during the group's wilderness years between 1970 and 1975 (for those of you who haven't had the pleasure, check out her contributions to 1973's Mystery To Me album). This CD is her oft-reissued Christine Perfect album, recorded for Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label in the period between her leaving Chicken Shack and before she joined her husband-to-be John McVie in Fleetwood Mac. McVie herself has frequently played down the record. Although certainly not a major work, it is a pretty textbook example of pleasant blues rock as the 60s became the 70s. To be honest, her tracks sound pretty much like later Fleetwood Mac album material, which given the presence of John McVie on bass and Danny Kirwan on guitar, is fairly understandable. Her version of Kirwan's When You Say is a standout, easily giving Fleetwood Mac's Then Play On version a run for its money. Perfect's piano work here strives to distil the very essence of the blues. It is the additional material that highlights her at her best: the demo, Tell Me You Need Me, that was also demoed by Fleetwood Mac is by far and away the best track here. The song underlines the pleasure of her best work; languid, expressive, soulful. With three BBC session recordings here as well, The Complete Blue Horizon Recordings, although hardly essential, is a very welcome listen.

KRAFTWERK - Minimum-Maximum (2005)
320
Kraftwerk's vision of a keyboard-driven world of clicking metronomic rhythms and digitized sound bites may have been the stuff of avant fantasy in the 1970s (the decade that saw the band's first groundbreaking albums), but it is commonplace reality in the 2000s. This is true not only in popular contemporary music (nearly all branches of hip hop and electronica bear Kraftwerk's influence), but in the computer-dominated society in which we live. In this way, time has finally caught up to Kraftwerk. This sense of arrival marks the 2004 live album MINIMUM-MAXIMUM. The two-disc set captures Kraftwerk in action (well, as much action as you get from four men stoically manning laptops), and acts as a career retrospective. Aside from the cheers from the audience, there isn't much "live energy" here (Kraftwerk might just as easily have played a pre-recorded DAT of the performance), but the music sounds as crisp, fully realized, and dazzling as ever. In fact, modified versions of "The Robots" and "Autobahn" arguably improve on the originals, while pieces from 2003's excellent "Tour De France Soundtracks" round out the track list nicely. In all, this is a superbly selected set of the band's epoch-defining music.

YAZOO - Only Yazoo: The Best Of (1999)
320
Although Yazoo split in 1984, it wasn't until 15 years later that a substantial compilation album appeared. Only Yazoo: The Best Of represents some of the best synth pop ever committed to record, and provides a fine display of the range and power of Alison Moyet's incredible voice. All of the singles are present (with the exception of "The Other Side of Love"), as well as a handful of quality album tracks. Thankfully, the Francois Kevorkian mix of "Situation" is included, as well as three "1999" mixes. These modern mixes don't reach the same heights as the originals, and the Todd Terry remix of "Don't Go" almost manages to ruin a beautiful song. However, for the most part, Only Yazoo is close to perfect. Tracks like "Nobody's Diary" remain landmarks of pop songwriting, although the sparse arrangements sometimes sound dated. Even so, it's a great album, and a fine overview of Yazoo's brief career.

"The Big Come Up" is the debut album by blues-rock duo, The Black Keys.
"Rawboned blues duo the Black Keys hail from Akron, Ohio, but a listen to "The Big Come Up" sests the Keys may have been raised by Mississippi ridge-runners. While Dan Auerbach's overdriven ax is powered by the same internal-combustion engine that drove blues legends Junior Kimbrough and Fred McDowell, this is no po-faced retro show. There's Wu-Tang Clan-schooled funk in drummer Patrick Carney's fatback beats, and on the cranked-up 'Countdown,' Auerbach suppresses a sob with the droll closing couplet, 'You stole my heart and damn near drove me mad/I gotta get back home to my mom and dad.'...In a world gone White Stripes crazy, save room in your heart and CD wallet for the Black Keys." - Rolling Stone

JOHN MAYALL - The Private Collection (2006)

Like most British blues fanatics in the early '60s, John Mayall took his cues primarily from the stars of Chicago's electric blues scene. Both with the Bluesbreakers and later on his own, Mayall played a large role in introducing white audiences to electric blues. He was a leader in the emerging blues-rock movement, and his bands were an early proving ground for a number of future stars--Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce of Cream, Mick Taylor of the Rolling Stones, and Peter Green, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac.

SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS - At Last (1998)
320
These 1997 recordings are among Screamin' Jay Hawkins' last sessions. After various pairings with sub-par backing or producers who weren't the optimum choice, AT LAST is a winner, produced by Jim Dickinson at Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis. In drummer Roger Hawkins and bass player David Hood, Hawkins has one of the best rhythm sections he's had in years. The dozen originals stay close to Hawkins' favored bluesy and soulful grooves, with the subject matter sticking to his usual themes of voodoo, cheating, and bodily functions. On "Coulda', Woulda', Shoulda'," Hawkins' enormous voice gets quasi-operatic as he trades off lines with singer Kelley Hurt. "I'll Be There" has a laid back tropical feel. It's the most relaxed setting on the album. The set closes with a cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff," a song that Hawkins transforms into his own testimonial.

MARK-ALMOND - Mark-Almond I (2007)
320
Mark–Almond was an English band of the late 1960s and early 1970s, who worked in the territory between rock and jazz. In 1970 Jon Mark and Johnny Almond formed Mark-Almond (also occasionally referred to as The Mark-Almond Band). The melancholy tones of saxophonist Almond were an integral part of the group's sound, and Almond frequently played flutes as well, including the rarely-heard bass flute. Characterized by a blend of blues and jazz riffs, Latin beats, and a mellow rock aesthetic, and in contrast the heavier guitar-driven rock of his contemporaries, composer and band leader Mark worked at producing warm and melodic works. - Wiki

BLACK SABBATH - Black Box:
The Complete Original Black Sabbath 1970-1978 (2004)
VBR
One can make the case that the Beatles, while the most important band of all time, wasn't the most influential. Decades after Black Sabbath laid down the commandments of heavy metal--lyrically, not for the squeamish; musically, dynamic and resolutely heavy--their impact remains improbably undiminished. One needed only to hear the first notes of the eponymous track on their eponymous 1970 debut to know that a new régime had arrived. And while one could (and should!) have mocked them, they would not be stopped. Black Box includes the eight albums recorded between 1970 and 1978 by the founding lineup--Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Ozzy Osbourne, and Geezer Butler--in one suitably weighty package.
