MUDDY WATERS - Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live (2003)
320
Muddy Waters passed on this day 25 years ago.
Muddy Waters was sharp enough to realize he was onto a good thing after Johnny Winter helped him get back to his roots on 1977's HARD AGAIN. He continued working with Winter in the same no-nonsense vein through the rest of the decade. The fruit of their collaboration can be heard in a live setting on this 1979 release, which takes HARD AGAIN's brand of revitalized Muddy to the stage. Backed by his regular band plus Winter, Muddy invests these songs with so much emotion you'd swear it was the first time he'd sung "Mannish Boy" instead of the ten-thousandth. Willie "Big Eyes" Smith's simple, insistent drums, and the guitars of Winter, Bob Margolin and Luther Johnson move together with the single-minded precision of a power drill, with Muddy playing the part of the husky-voiced drill bit. Amazingly, Muddy's power is undiminished from his '50s salad days. When he closes with a newer number about "going down to Florida," there's no need to worry about early retirement. He sounds ready to keep going as long as there's life in him. And that's exactly what he did.

Episode Two (2007)

"Episode 2" is the companion album to 2005's "Episode 1". It's the live tracks that round out this fine set, however, and show Tedeschi's true colors as a vibrant, no-nonsense, crowd-pleasing performer.

V.A. - Easy Rider OST (1969)
320
After 1968's political assassinations and street riots, the once vaunted idealism the 60's went south for good in 1969. The artistic metaphors for the unraveling of The Age of Aquarius encompassed variously Gimme Shelter, the documentary of The Stones' disastrous Altamont free concert, and Dennis Hopper's idealism-gone-sour road picture, Easy Rider. It's rock score was an instant counter-culture classic, a collection anchored by Steppenwolf's road anthem chestnut "Born to Be Wild" and its cautionary "The Pusher," a song that underscored the film's frank portrayal of drug use (one that's given a more lighthearted hearing on Fraternity of Man's "Don't Bogart Me"). Other standouts include the Holy Modal Rounders' loopy "If You Want To Be A Bird" and Byrds' leader Roger McGuinn's "Ballad of Easy Rider" and faithful cover of Dylan's "It's Alright , Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)."

NEIL DIAMOND - Stages Performances 1970-2002 (2003)

320
Few singers are as connected with sing-alongs as the New York City born and raised Neil Diamond. From rousing renditions at pubs to interpretations at karaoke clubs, his songs are vigorously sung from sea to shining sea. The incomparable Mr. Diamond's songs are made to be sung lustily, feverishly, with reckless abandon, and as one would predict, Neil himself sings them that way, making his live shows, concert events in the full-bodied, Tom Jones sense of the word. His shows are the ultimate in fan friendly entertainment, interspersed with wandering tales and sudden, direct connections with the crowd. This distinctly Diamond behavior was even the subject of a Saturday Night Live sketch that played in part off his stage digressions and in part off the passion in his songs, songs which sometimes wear arcane, wonderfully obtuse, and even pleadingly earnest lyrics on their sleeve. The box set STAGES gathers all the live Diamond any fan might desire in five audio discs and a DVD. The performances span his formative years in the early 1970s, when he channeled raw yet sweet Stax-style soul, through his ballads of the '80s and his famous Christmas caroling to two concerts from 2002. All of these performances capture the flavor, the passion, the sound bites, and the sweat of a Neil Diamond concert experience.

Deanna Bogart is a blues singer, pianist and saxophone player. Drawing on a variety of musical sources ranging from boogie-woogie to New Orleans R&B to swing to rock and roll, singer and barrelhouse pianist Bogart emerged as one of the most eclectic performers in contemporary blues. She cut her teeth on the Maryland blues circuit, developing a crowd-pleasing style which often found her leaping up from her piano bench to chat with the audience, clad in her trademark black fedora.

LEVON HELM - Live at the Palladium NYC (2006)
192
Recorded on New Year's Day, 1977 at the now-vanished Palladium in New York, this set from the legendary Band drummer Levon Helm together with equally well-known fellow musicians like Dr. John, Paul Butterfield, and Steve Cropper is like a hype-free version of THE LAST WALTZ. Songs from the band's eponymous (and deleted) mid-'70s album like "Milk Cow Boogie" and "Rain Down Tears," the latter including Butterfield's ghostly harmonica, are interspersed with the Band favorite "Ophelia" and classics like "Sing Sing Sing" and "Got My Mojo Working." BELA FLECK - Drive (1988)
320
When Béla Fleck produced this little-known gem in 1988, the New Grass Revival was winding down and the Flecktones had yet to be formed. Fleck's previous solo outings had strayed from his bluegrass roots to varying degrees, but what makes Drive so special is how closely it hews to traditional bluegrass in sound and instrumentation while still allowing for exciting new ideas, crisp ensemble passages, and brilliant improvisation. The musicians who help out are all tops in their field: Dobro player Jerry Douglas, flat-picker Tony Rice, mandolinist Sam Bush, fiddlers Stuart Duncan and Mark O'Connor (who team up for a twin-fiddle sound on two down-home cuts), and bassist Mark Schatz. There's not a missed note (or superfluous one for that matter) anywhere, from the steamrolling opener "Whitewater" to the minor-keyed, jazz-based "Natchez Trace" to the warm ballad "Lights of Home" to the powerful "Crucial County Breakdown." The much heralded, classical-influenced Strength in Numbers record came less than a year later and included Fleck, Bush, O'Connor, and Douglas, but Drive certainly deserves a spot next to it in your newgrass collection.

SHADOWS OF KNIGHT - Gloria (1966)
VBR
The first and best album by Chicago's Shadows Of Knight is as close as an American band ever came to an equivalent to the early albums by the Rolling Stones. The group is today best known for its magnificent, feral version of Van Morrison's "Gloria," a defining single in the '60s punk canon. But the rest of this album shows that these white boys knew the blues better than most, turning Chess Records standards like "I Got My Mojo Workin'," John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom," and "I Just Want to Make Love to You" from South Side blues into suburban snot-rock without losing any of their original powerful intensity. Originals like "Light Bulb Blues" and "It Always Happens That Way" are tougher than you'd expect, and the bonus tracks--two single mixes and an alternate version of "Mojo" recorded as a giveaway for a local potato chip company (!) - are excellent.

ELTON JOHN - Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975)
192
Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy is the ninth studio album by British singer/songwriter Elton John, released in 1975. It debuted at number 1 on the U.S. Pop Albums chart, the first ever to do so, and stayed there for seven weeks. It has gone on to be certified as triple platinum. On the UK Albums Chart, it peaked at number 2. In 2003, the album was ranked number 158 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Elton John has always liked having it both ways. He's flamboyant and vain, yet empathetic and sincere. He sits at his piano playing sentimental melodies, but the words come not from inside his soul but from friend Bernie Taupin. For Captain Fantastic, he and Taupin wrote a concept album which sketches their career together. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" is easily the strongest song outside of the concept. The addition of several songs "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" featuring John Lennon, "Philadelphia Freedom," and "One Day at a Time" blow the concept but up the entertainment value considerably.

CAROLINE HERRING - Lantana (2008)
224
Caroline Herring, quite simply, is one of the most unique, haunting voices in Americana music today. With lyrics informed by the literary giants of her native Southland, Herring’s music combines a variety of traditional styles, from acoustic folk to bluegrass and old-time country. Her resonant alto voice is a natural match for the brand of music she uses to convey her stories and songs. “There’s a starkness and honesty in Caroline’s songs,’ says bluegrass legend Peter Rowan. “She has a deeply-rooted sense of the South and its history – and of her own childhood and that as history. Each image she crafts is highlighted, then recedes into the past.” This is a grand description of a fine artist who draws acclaim from musicians as diverse as Rowan, Austin artist Slaid Cleaves, Tejana songstress Tish Hinojosa, and New England songwriter Dar Williams, who calls Herring the “elusive ‘real thing.’”

CREAM - Those Were The Days (1997)
192
THOSE WERE THE DAYS is a four-disc set, the first half consisting of Cream's entire studio output and the last half featuring the band's concert performances.
Cream: Jack Bruce (vocals, acoustic guitar, cello, harmonica, piano, organ, bass); Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Ginger Baker (vocals, drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: George Harrison (guitar); Felix Pappalardi (viola, organ, trumpet, tonette, Swiss hand bells, piano, mellotron, bass).
In the two years they were together, Cream's blend of blues, psychedelic rock and quirky lyricism forever altered the definition of rock music. After releasing four seminal albums, Cream broke up as quickly as they had come together, with all three members going on to solo careers of varying artistic and commercial success. THOSE WERE THE DAYS brings together Cream's musical output in a deluxe four-CD set that's neatly halved between studio and live material. Meticulously compiled and remastered, DAYS includes every studio recording the band ever released, as well as previously unreleased demos, masters, rare and alternate takes. The live half of the box set is primarily culled from seminal performances at legendary venues like San Francisco's Winterland and Fillmore West. The sound has been considerably cleaned up allowing the listener to hear every nuance of these extended flights of jazz-flavored blues-rock improvisation. The package surrounding Cream's timeless musical output sports a DISRAELI GEARS-style day-glo cover and a 48-page color book. The ccompanying notes, complemented by dozens of previously unpublished photos, provide an intimate glimpse into the brief, but groundbreaking career of the original power trio.

RICK DANKO - Cryin' Heart Blues (2005)

The Band's Rick Danko delivers a solid set of studio originals from 1978 with his patent rock'n'soul voice. Previousy unheard, these songs were written and recorded with Beach Boys' and Rolling Stones' singer Blondie Chaplin as the unreleased follow-up to 1977's Rick Danko on Arista Records. Unlike that record, there's not a Band-mate in sight for these sessions-just Rick, a hand-picked set of West Coast players, and on one song even a celebrated pair of surprise guest guitarists. However, we've included recently unearthed Tommy Spurlock productions that include keyboardist Garth Hudson. TODD RUNDGREN - A Wizard, A True Star (1973)
320
"A Wizard, a True Star" is a progressive rock recording by Todd Rundgren, released in 1973. The album is an extended medley after the fashion of The Beatles' late recordings; brief songs segue into one another, and the lyrics are frequently humorous or hallucinatory. Arthur Wood made the curious cover painting that featured on the original recording. After three albums with Philadelphia's psych-pop Nazz and an equal number of exquisitely crafted AM-pop solo records, Rundgren felt the need to stretch. So side one (01-12) of "A Wizard, a True Star" consists of 12 ultra-brief song fragments and burbling synth solos. From the giggly "Rock and Roll Pussy" to the genuinely experimental finale "La Feel Internationale," variety is the watchword. Side two (13-19) is only slightly more structured, with a 10-minute medley of '60s R&B hits dominating. Weird but often fascinating.

Clout were originally a five-piece, South African million-selling all-girl rock group formed in 1977, best known for their song "Substitute". "Substitute" was a cover version of an obscure Righteous Brothers' song, composed by Willie Wilson. Clout's version reached number two in the UK singles chart for three weeks in June 1978, and number one in New Zealand, Australia, Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and South Africa. It reached only number sixty-seven in the U.S. for one week in September 1978, but stayed in the Billboard chart for ten weeks altogether.

PAUL SIMON - There Goes Rhymin' Simon (1973)
320
In the early '70s, Paul Simon sounded old before his time: while his harder-rocking peers were hanging on to themes of youthful rebellion and romantic obsession, Simon, already a pop veteran who'd notched records since his teens, focused on the smaller details and defining quirks of real life. His second solo album finds him regarding the passage of time and the fragility of relationships with his usual mix of smart-aleck observations and gentler, more deeply felt melancholy. "Kodachrome" was a breezy delight upon its release that now sounds prescient in its backwards glance at myths of youth, "An American Tune" sustains its mood of graceful maturity against a Bach-inspired guitar arrangement that's still gorgeous, and "Something So Right" remains Simon's most luminous declaration of love. Actually produced in varied studios with shifting session bands (including the chameleons in the Muscle Shoals Sound section), the set also introduced the Roches and notched Simon's first plunge into gospel on "Loves Me Like A Rock."

TOWNES VAN ZANDT - Texas Rain (2001)
320
Good as it is, the music performed by most Texas singer/songwriters isn’t meant for everyone. But that’s never stopped the music business from trying to take it to a mass audience. Such is the case with Townes Van Zandt’s posthumously released Texas Rain. Originally recorded in the early ’90s, under the guidance of producer Kevin Eggers, the album pairs up Van Zandt for a series of duets with everyone from Emmylou Harris to Doug Sahm, Willie Nelson to Kathy Mattea. As one might expect, sometimes it works — as in the Johnny Cash-like gallop through If I Needed You and the Dire Straits-ish take of Waiting Around to Die — but mostly it doesn’t. The problem lies in the overly glossy production given to many of the tracks. True, that is often how an artist reaches a wider audience. But for Van Zandt, whose lyrics wallow in the supreme misery and heartache of life, the arrangements remove a large part of the sting from his words. As a result, long-time fans might strle to find much on Texas Rain worth savoring. Then again, if this is what it takes to get Van Zandt some attention, so be it. The album still beats the hell out of the pop artists that have taken over Nashville in recent years.

STEVE WINWOOD - About Time (2003)

"About Time" is a Steve Winwood album released in 2003. It was his first album since 1997 and was compared to his earlier work with Traffic. Known for his work with Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith & as a solo artist, Winwood set out to craft a fresh, contemporary album that would combine rock 'n' roll & world music. Winwood centers the album's sound around the Hammond B-3 organ. Working closely with guitarist Jose Neto (Airto Moreira & Flora Purim) & drummer Walfredo Reyes Jr. (Santana, Traffic), About Time marks the first time in 27 years that Winwood recorded live without the use of multiple tracks or recording loops.

SONNY LANDRETH - Grant Street (2005)
VBR
One of the greatest slide guitarist since Duane Allman gives self-indulgence a good name on this terrific live album. Performing for a dance-hall crowd in Louisiana, Landreth is simultaneously tasteful and excessive, crafting extravagant solos with the dynamic range of an orchestra. If the exuberant surge of “Pedal to Metal” bears a superficial resemblance to old-school blues-rock, there’s none of the crude chest-thumping that makes many ’70s bands so embarrassing today. Whether soaring and swooping on the instrumental “Native Stepson” or unleashing a wailing vocal to counterpoint his blazing riffs on “Wind in Denver,” Landreth’s light touch makes the most familiar gestures brand new. Grant Street is your chance to boogie without shame.

LARA PRICE & LAURA CHAVEZ - Lara And Laura
Unpled (2005)

She’s an All American singer with a sultry stage presence and a voice that demands you're attention-smoky, lonely, sexy, and powerful. It's no wonder her music transcends the blues and crosses a line into music that is unequivocally superb. Lara fronts and leads several musical projects: Lara and Laura Unpled, an acoustic duo with guitar phenom Laura Chavez; Velvet Plum, a popular bay area cover band that includes talent from San Jose's finest musicians; and the Lara Price band, a soulful rockin' blues band. Lara and Laura have currently been entertaining fans with a full band (The Lara Price Band) racking up great reviews from Connecticut to San Francisco. To add a different flavor to their already vast repertoire, the female duo take an acoustic adventure covering a range of songs by Etta James, Radio Head and their own creations. In a short time the 2 created a must see bluesy, rockin', sultry night of great music.

THE ROLLING STONES - It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (1974)

"It's Only Rock'n'Roll" is an album by The Rolling Stones, released in 1974. It would be the last Rolling Stones album for guitarist Mick Taylor and the songwriting and recording of the albums title track would have a connection to Taylor's eventual replacement, Ronnie Wood. The album has a more firm rock sound than their previous album, the more funk and soul-inspired Goats Head Soup. The album reached number one on the United States charts and number two in the United Kingdom.

THE KINKS - Muswell Hillbillies (1971)
320
"Muswell Hillbillies" holds a special place in the hearts of many Kinks fans, as well as the band themselves. Released in November 1971, the album has an anachronistic, rootsy quality that flew in the face of the blues-rock acts then diddling themselves all over FM radio. The unaffected, country-influenced, back-to-basics feel was similar to what the Rolling Stones attempted seven months later with "Exile On Main Street". However, while the theme of "Muswell Hillbillies" was about getting back to the roots, it was Ray and Dave Davies' own roots, in London's Muswell Hill neighborhood, that inspired Ray to pen the album. As on many of the Kinks' albums from the '60s, "Muswell Hillbillies" both celebrates and affectionately satirizes English life. "20th Century Man," "Holiday," and "Here Come the People in Gray" address the issues of working-class characters and the tribulations of Muswell as it underwent modernization. The album also demonstrated Ray Davies's penchant for albums based on narrative concepts, a trend he would continue through much of the '70s.

LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS - The Complete Aladdin Recordings (1991)
VBR
"THE COMPLETE ALADDIN RECORDINGS" collects all 43 of Lightnin' Hopkins' tracks for Aladdin, a Los Angeles-based label that was the first to record the legendary Texas bluesman. One might be amazed at how fully developed Hopkins' art appears here, until one realizes that he was already 35 years old and a fully developed musician in 1947, when the first of these sessions took place. From the very first cut, the now standard "Katie May," Hopkins' confidence and mastery are apparent throughout this essential two-disc set. Hopkins recorded four sessions for Aladdin, two with a small ensemble and two later sessions as a solo performer. The ensemble recordings, which fill the first half of the first disc, are raw, gritty, and sensual: in other words, rock & roll for adults. "Short Haired Woman" and "Let Me Play With Your Poodle" are among the highlights. The latter portion of this set features Hopkins alone, a setting that shows off both his guitar prowess and his haunting vocals. "Shotgun" and "Abeline" are among the R&B hits recorded at these sessions. This set is a must for blues devotees.

JOHN LEE HOOKER - The Best Of Friends (1998)

Being one of the greatest blues musicians of all time means that John Lee Hooker's made some pretty famous acquaintances along the way. This means Los Lobos and Juke Logan back him on a swinging reading of "Dimples" and Carlos Santana helps create a kind of samba blues vibe for "The Healer" and "Chill Out (Things Gonna Change)." Also included on FRIENDS are "I'm in the Mood," Hooker's Grammy Award-winning duet with Bonnie Raitt and two tracks with acolyte Van Morrison: the ominous "I Cover The Waterfront" and the wistful "Don't Look Back." The inclusion of new tracks with Ben Harper ("Burnin' Hell") and Eric Clapton ("Boogie Chillen") sweetens this package, but it is Hooker's solo reading of "Tupelo" that induces goosebumps.

FRANK MARINO & MAHOGANY RUSH - Dragonfly:
The Best Of Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush (1996)
320
Hard-rock band formed in 1970 in Montreal by the guitarist and singer Frank Marino with the drummer Jimmy Ayoub and the bass guitarist Paul Harwood. The group initially patterned itself after contemporary British blues-rock bands, and Marino adopted the exhibitionist style of the US guitarist Jimi Hendrix. After making its first three LPs 1972-4 in Canada for Kot'ai the trio moved to the USA. Six LPs followed 1976-81 for Columbia: Mahogany Rush, World Anthem, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush Live, Tales of the Unexpected, What's Next, and Power of Rock 'n' Roll. The third of these was recorded in various cities during one of the band's several extensive US tours. Marino's performance with Mahogany Rush at the California Jam II rock festival also was issued in part on record. The band made its British debut in 1977, toured Japan late in 1978, and returned to Canada for occasional appearances. Marino was described in this period as 'a rip-roaring, crowd-pleasing rocker whose playing runs from excessive repetition for its own sake to fine solo work that reveals several influences... of the many aspects of Hendrix's style, the one most successfully interpreted in concert is the rampaging firebreather - stoked with wah-wah, distortion, feedback and bizarre harmonics' (Tom Wheeler, Guitar Player, Jun 1978). During the 1980s Marino worked with other musicians, including his brother Vince, also a guitarist, and dropped the Mahogany Rush name for the LPs Jernaut and Full Circle. However, his 12th album, Double Live, issued in 1988, found the Mahogany Rush name restored. Marino remained a nightclub attraction in the early 1990s.

THE CITY - Now That Everything's Been Said (1968)

This is a CD reissue of the only album released by the Carole-fronted group, The City - the group also included the now legendary session player Danny Kortchmar on guitar & vocals. This album was originally released in 1968 & available for quite a short time, & here it is given a proper reissue treatment. Fans of albums such as "Tapestry" & "Music" etc., will find this to be no less than a good listen. 2 of these tracks, which were later on hits in versions by other artists, were featured on the 2 CD "Ode Collection" set, "Hi De Ho" being one of the highlights. The gem from this album is "Snow Queen", a somewhat jazzy, gloriously melodic, lush pop-rock tune with a fantastic lead vocal from Carole as well as great harmonies, & it sparkles on this CD with the remastered sound--it's one of the very best songs of her entire career--why it wasn't included on the "Ode Collection" is beyond me. Carole fans ought to give this album a spin.

BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS - 1, 2, 3 & 4 (1968/71)

At the beginning of 1969, the psychedelic movement was dying down. The social turmoil of the previous year was already seeming to hint that not all was fine and dandy with the situation at hand. While some bands took the time out to address the upheaval, a few barely bothered to acknowledge it and instead just made some great experimental music typical of the time. Blood, Sweat & Tears was one of these bands. Blood, Sweat & Tears (also known as "BS&T") was an American music group, formed in 1967 in New York City. The band fused rock, blues, pop music, horn arrangements and jazz improvisation into a hybrid that came to be known as "jazz-rock". Unlike "jazz fusion" bands, which tend toward virtuostic displays of instrumental facility and some experimentation with electric instruments, the songs of Blood, Sweat & Tears merged the stylings of rock, pop and R&B/soul music with big band, while also adding elements of small combo jazz traditions.

NEIL YOUNG - Chrome Dreams [Rust Edition] (2004)
192
Neil Young was on a creative high in 1975. By the end of the summer, Zuma was finished, though still not released. Yet Neil carried on recording his new songs. Sometimes he recorded solo and sometimes with Crazy Horse. Lots of these songs would remain unheard by the public until quite a while later, but by late ’75, Neil had already written and recorded versions of such future classics as Like A Hurricane, Powderfinger, Sedan Delivery, Pocahontas and Ride By Llama. He carried on recording in 1976. More great songs were put down on tape, such as Will To Love, Stringman and Campaigner. Some of us may feel that the Long May You Run album with Stephen Stills robbed us of the natural successor to Zuma, but Stills always suspected that Neil was holding back his best stuff for his solo album. That solo album was a work in progress throughout this period. Titles were reported in the press: Ride My Llama, In My Neighborhood, American Stars ‘N Bars, Chrome Dreams. When American Stars ‘N Bars was released in 1977, Neil had scrapped most of the material he’d been recording since late ’75, replacing much of it with a series of rough hewn cowboy songs. Fun stuff to be sure, but had Neil committed the latest in a series of difficult to explain career suicides? Who else, except maybe Bob Dylan, would sit on a stash of such quality songs and not let the public hear them? Tracks 1 to 12 of this compilation are thought to be the unreleased Chrome Dreams album, readied for release weeks before Neil recorded those country hoedowns and rethought his strategy. Some of these song titles will be more than familiar to you, but the actual performances may surprise you. The other six songs from the album were released unchanged on the albums American Stars ‘N Bars, Comes A Time and Hawks And Doves, yet you may still be able to pick out slight differences in the mixes.

DR JOHN -The Best Of The Parlophone Years (2005)
320
Since signing to Parlophone 1997, Dr John has released four great albums - all very different, but all in the distinctive and inimitable style of the music industry's favourite physician. From Anutha Zone in 1998 with a host of guest collaborations, through the Duke Ellington Centenary celebration Duke Elegant in 1999, to his personal interpretation of New Orleans in 2001 with Creole Moon, and last year's star-studded N'Awlinz - Dis, Dat Or D'Udda, Dr John has produced a wealth of latter-day musicality for the label. As well as Dr John's unmistakeable vocals and keyboard along with his regular band, featured artists include BB King, Paul Weller, Jools Holland, Randy Newman, Mavis Staples and Gaz Coombes/Mick Quinn (Supergrass), J.Spaceman a/k/a Jason Pierce (Spiritualized) amongst others. As a bonus to his loyal fans, the album also features two bonus tracks - the previously unissued 'Careless Love' from the 2004 N'Awlinz-'Dis, Dat Or D'Udda sessions' and 'Look Out'- only previously available as a bonus track on the Japanese version of 'Anutha Zone'.

SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON
- The Sonny Boy Williamson Story (1989)
320
Sonny Boy Williamson (John Lee Curtis Williamson, 1914 — 1948) was an American blues harmonica player, and the first to use the name Sonny Boy Williamson. He was born near Jackson, Tennessee in 1914. His original harmonica recordings were considered to be in the country blues style, but he soon demonstrated skill at making harmonica a lead instrument for the blues, and popularized the instrument for the first time in a more urban blues setting. He has been called "the father of modern blues harp".

GRAM PARSONS - GP & Grievous Angel (1990)
320
On his two early-1970s solo albums, collected here on one disc, Gram Parson lends his fragile, aching tenor to music that's the definition of what he called "country soul." Neither of these titles is quite as strong as the work Parsons had previously done with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, but with originals as great as "She" and "In My Hour of Darkness" - not to mention backing from Emmylou Harris and the core of Elvis's early-'70s band - both GP and Grievous Angel still stand as country-rock classics.

LOUIS ARMSTRONG - Louis 'Country & Western' Armstrong (1970)
320
Although jazz had flirted with country long before Satchmo released Louis “Country & Western” Armstrong, this recording is essential. It stands in the middle somewhere between Bob Wills' legendary country swing (aka Texas swing) of the thirties and the forties and Willie Nelson's country-jazz crossover records in the early eighties. C&W Armstrong has been virtually ignored, now out of print and and never even available on CD. The record itself is nowhere near as groundbreaking as the work released by Wills, Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Bill Frisell or bluegrass-jazz innovators Bela Fleck and Alison Brown. In fact, Armstrong doesn't even play his trumpet on the record, but his trademark raspy vocal chops are at work. The record is filled out with Nashville's session men Jack Eubanks (lead guitar), Stu Basore (steel guitar), Willie Ackerman (skins), Hank Strzelecki (bass), Larry Butler (piano) and Billie Grammer (rhythm guitar).

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - BOX SET (2000)

VBR
The arc of Jimi Hendrix's cometlike career is captured on the four-disc Jimi Hendrix Experience box set, which showcases the musician's mercurial brilliance and offers new angles from which to appraise his artistry. That the great guitarist's unreleased musings have been explored since his death three decades ago wouldn't seem to bode well for a multidisc collection such as this. But this retrospective boggles the mind merely by presenting how much Hendrix accomplished in a few short years and, in doing so, questioning what he would have achieved had he lived.

JOHNNY WINTER - The Progressive Blues Experiment (1969)
320
Although his early Columbia albums brought him worldwide stardom, it was this modest little album that first brought Johnny Winter to the attention of guitarheads in America. It's also Winter at the beginning of a long career, playing the blues as if his life depends on it, without applying a glimmer of rock commercialism. The standard classic repertoire here includes "Rollin' and Tumblin'," "I Got Love if You Want It," "Forty-Four," "It's My Own Fault," and "Help Me," with Winter mixing it up with his original Texas trio of Red Turner on drums and Tommy Shannon (later of Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble) on bass. A true classic, this is one dirty, dangerous, and visionary album.

JOHN LENNON - Walls And Bridges (1974)
320
Walls and Bridges is an album by John Lennon, released in October 1974. Recorded and issued during his estrangement from Yoko Ono, the album caught Lennon in the middle of his infamous "lost weekend", a period that lasted some eighteen months. It was the last album that Lennon released without input from his wife. Apparently, it was originally intended to be an acoustic, downbeat album, in the style of Bob Dylan, but continued influence from friend Elton John inspired Lennon to add a decidedly more upbeat feel to many of the tracks (although some of the original feel is still prevalent in some songs).

On September 19, 1981 the folk-rock duo reunited for a free concert on the Great Lawn of New York's Central Park attended by more than 500,000 people. Performed with a who's-who of East Coast session aces before a record-setting crowd of half a million fans, The Concert in Central Park finds its stars just shy of their 40th birthdays and very much in their primes, their voices sweet and pure and their playing relaxed, perfectly in tune and in synch. The show features a mix of S&G and solo Simon tunes, including all the songs that appear on the CD, with the addition of a reprise of "Late in the Evening" and the first live performance of Simon's "The Late Great Johnny Ace." TEN YEARS AFTER - Essential (1991)

"The Essential Ten Years After", is a chronicle of their early '70s recordings for the Chrysalis label. A sheer delight for T.Y.A. Fanatics and a self contained history of a talented, important but largely ignored band for the rest of us. And although a good number of the classics are here, this could have easily been a two disc set. The tunes included, although not in chronological order, fit together well offering a broad overview of an effervescent career. Alvin Lee and company have been saddled with the blistering " Woodstock" version of "I'm Going' Home" since 1969, while the bulk of their work is sadly ignored. Perhaps this new collection will change that. All of the original songs have been lovingly remastered for CD with the help of original producer, Chris Wright and all sound wonderful.

Recorded during the venerable American institution's creative peak, this is an all-but-ideal single disc compilation. With all the hits (including Greg Allman's solo "Midnight Rider"), it also contains studio versions of most of the concert favorites, including the epic "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." Interestingly, for a group that first made its mark as a contemporary blues band, not much of the material here is blues per se, with "Whipping Post" being the obvious exception. JOE BONAMASSA - Blues Deluxe (2003)

New York guitar phenom walks tall in the blues tradition with this third album, jettisoning fiery riffs inspired by John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Elmore James, and Albert Collins into the future with furious playing, a hard-rock sensibility, and a grizzled voice that owes a debt to Gregg Allman. Equally inspired by the Delta blues and the mid-'60s British blues boom, the young firebrand - who titled this CD after a Rod Stewart song penned while in the Jeff Beck Group--is able to fuse those two schools together, creating edgy blues rock.

BLUE FLOYD - Begins (2008)
320
Blue Floyd consists of Gov’t Mule bassist Allen Woody along with their drummer Matt Abts. One time Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, as well as, Allman Brother’s bassist Berry Oakley are also in the lineup. Johnny Neel takes over on keyboards. Their new 2008 album Begins will be released on Airline Records. It’s flat out the best bunch of covers of Floyd yet. In fact, the musicianship is so good they really transcend themselves above being just a cover band. On the two bonus tracks(Beatles songs Come Together & Taxman), Slick Aguilar, who did session work for David Crosby and Jefferson Starship, plays lead guitar. Blue Floyd’s versions of Floyd’s Fearless and Set The Controls for the Heart of the Sun are really stand out and their Hey You/Another Brick in The Wall medley is nicely haunting. The guitar sounds as if it’s actually Gilmour jamming away. Very highly recommended for all Floydians.

ALBERT KING - The Lost Session (1971)
320
The tapes of this Albert King/John Mayall album were discovered by Bill Belmont in 1986 while rummaging through the Stax vaults looking for Albert King tapes for an album of unreleased blues material. It was produced by John Mayall at Wolfman Jack Studios in Los Angeles on August 28, 1971. As to why it wasn't released at the time of its recording, Mayall said "The intent was to make it different from the Stax sound. I accomplished that but also got it canned because Stax obviously couldn't cope with that. It didn't sound like their stuff, so they didn't release it." It is an inspired pairing of King, one of the most influential guitar stylist of the modern blues, and Mayall, the chief conceptualist of the British blues revival of the Sixties. It sounds different from anything King had recorded before or since, a three-way fusion of Mississippi Delta blues, British blues, and Los Angeles jazz.

Shangri-La is a fictional place described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton. In the book, "Shangri-La" is a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains. Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise but particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia—a permanently happy land, isolated from the outside world.

WHISKEYTOWN - Strangers Almanac (1997)
VBR
Whiskeytown was an alternative country band formed in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1994. Fronted by Ryan Adams, other members included Caitlin Cary, Phil Wandscher, Eric "Skillet" Gilmore, and Mike Daly. They disbanded in 1999, with Adams leaving to pursue his solo career. In 2005, Adams and Cary announced that they would reform the band and record another LP. The band is considered one of the genre's most influential and successful, along with Uncle Tupelo, The Jayhawks and The Old 97's. Like these acts, Whiskeytown gradually expanded its sound outside the confines of alt-country, while still keeping roots in acts like singer/songwriter Gram Parsons and alternative rock band The Replacements. Much like Uncle Tupelo member Jeff Tweedy's current band Wilco, Adams eventually grew out of many of the sound's trappings altogether as a solo artist. Throughout Whiskeytown's history, Adams carried a reputation for being difficult to work with, and as a result, member changes came fast and furious. Despite the fact that the band only released three albums, none of the albums feature a consistent lineup, with only Adams and Cary remaining constants.

SPIRIT - The Family That Plays Together (1968)

Spirit was an American jazz/hard rock/psychedelic band founded in 1967. Spirit wrote the book on the sound they created: a potent synthesis of high-voltage rock, folk, jazz, blues and avant garde electronica. "The Family That Plays Together", the second of four albums released by the original Spirit lineup, was marketed by Ode Records in 1968. Unlike its predecessor, Spirit, their self-titled and surreal debut, The Family That Plays Together evinces more greatly the band's ability for playing beyond the genre of psychedelic rock than within it.

BRYAN FERRY - Slave To Love: The Best Of The Ballads (2000)
320
When "Slave to Love: The Best of the Ballads" was released in 2000, there hadn't been a true Roxy Music compilation in print for years. Street Life and More Than This were both grab bags of Roxy Music singles and material from Bryan Ferry's solo career. While it's logical to assume that fans of one artist would certainly be interested in the other, the approach never made for a unified compilation - Roxy Music's sound shifted quite a bit over the years, and their earlier, edgier singles never sat well next to the smooth balladeering of Ferry's companion career. However, Slave to Love is the first Ferry/Roxy grab bag to make internal sense, because it's thematically limited to the Roxy material that most resembles Ferry's crooning solo style. By the time of 1982's Avalon, the gap between the two had narrowed so much as to be virtually indistinguishable, and this compilation captures the elegantly romantic sound that came to be inextricably linked to Ferry. Slave to Love shouldn't be taken as comprehensive, even in this narrower vein (there are several excellent late-period Roxy Music singles missing), but as an encapsulation of one specific part of their appeal, it makes for a strong listen.

T.REX - Bolan Boogie (1972)
320
This is quite an odd collection of tracks from Bolan's Late Tyranosaurus Rex period and early T.Rex period! Though at times a little eclectic, the tracks are classic Bolan. Songs that are familiar glam rock staples such as 'Get It On' and 'Jeepster' sit alongside the more innocent songs of 'By The Light Of A Magical Moon' and 'She Was Born To Be My Unicorn'. Then there are great tracks from the more transitional, electric sounding T.Rex e.g. 'Ride A White Swan', and 'The King of the Mountain Cometh'. This album contains an excellent selection of songs and demonstrates how Bolan's style changed during the early 70's.

STEVE WINWOOD - The Finer Things (1995)

It includes all of the hits and many of his finest album tracks, yet the overall approach is rather exhausting -- the rarities are rarely illuminating, they're just there for the sake of being there. After acknowledging Eric Clapton and George Harrison in the audience at a concert at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1969, B.B. King was heard to have said 'But I've got to say that I'm sorry, Peter Green is best'. THE BAND - The Best Of A Musical History (2007)
320
Released in the spring of 2007, about two years after the appearance of the original box, the single-disc excerpt The Best of a Musical History isn't nearly as good as its mammoth five-disc parent, largely because it tries to serve to audiences equally: it tries to please casual fans who just want the hits, while trying to win over serious fans curious about the rarities on the box yet unwilling to acquire the whole set. As such, this 19-track set sprawls all over the place, containing a smattering of Band standards ("The Weight," "Life Is a Carnival," "King Harvest [Has Surely Come]," "Stage Fright," "I Shall Be Released"), fan favorites that aren't quite rare ("Orange Juice Blues," "Don't Do It"), genuine rarities ("He Don't Love You [And He'll Break Your Heart]," by Levon & the Hawks; Bob Dylan's "Can You Please Crawl out Your Window?"), and five unreleased tracks, highlighted by a roaring live version of "Slippin' and Slidin'" and Rick Danko's "Home Cookin'." All of this music is good and the set does indicate the rich breadth of the Band's music. Many of the band's classics are here, but this doesn't contain enough great rarities from the box set to be a true "best-of the box." It merely is what it says it is: a sampler of the box, nothing more.

BOB MARGOLIN - In North Carolina (2007)
320
Bob Margolin's goal with this CD was to perform the type of blues-oriented music that he plays at home for his family. Through overdubbing, he is very much a self-sufficient one-man band. The variety of music that he performs spans several idioms, ranging from jump blues and "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal You" to lowdown blues, Bob Dylan's "Tears of Rage," a few songs reminiscent of Muddy Waters (with whom he played regularly for seven years) and an occasional instrumental. Margolin's musicianship is impressive, his vocals are heartfelt, his originals are colorful and his spoken word story on "You Never Know" is realistic while containing a moral. This CD is easily recommended for blues fans.

LOS LONELY BOYS - Los Lonely Boys (2003)
256
Los Lonely Boys are an American Grammy-winning musical rock band from Texas. They play a style of music which they dub as Texican Rock n' Roll, combining elements of rock and roll, blues, soul, country, and Tejano.
California's Los Lobos are the reigning kings of Tex-Mex/Rock Espanol. But this debut CD by the San Angelo, Texas band Los Lonely Boys might herald a changing of the guard. This is truly a band of brothers, led by guitarist/vocalist Henry Garza and his younger, bass-and-drum-playing siblings Jojo and Ringo (no kidding). Like a lot of groups, they had to move away to achieve fame--in their case, to Nashville. But after the release of their EP, Willie Nelson heard them, put them on tour as his opening act, and recorded them at his studio--and the rest may be history. Stylistically, the Garza brothers' bilingual songs about love and life combine Stevie Ray Vaughan blues, Santana-style guitar licks and R&B. Nelson helps out on guitar, with Reese Wynans on keyboards. Produced by Keb Mo and B.B. King producer John Porter, the music is honest, driving, and down home, especially on the organ-filled uptempo tracks "Senorita" and "Tell My Why." The stinging guitar solo on the Afro-anthemic "Onda" recalls the '70s grooves Santana built his chops on, while "The Answer" and "More than Love" are raw power ballads that show off this group's dynamism and diversity.

MICHAEL HUTCHENCE - Michael Hutchence (1999)
320
Michael Hutchence took a break from his day job as INXS's libidinous lead singer in 1995 to record his first solo album. He died a tabloid-exploited death in 1997, and a few years later, Black Grape producer Danny Saber and ex-Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill picked up the recordings and finished the songs. So what happens when these producers take it upon themselves to speak for the dead? They give this album the Black Grape treatment by dipping the ballads and funk-pop tracks in multiple layers of trippy, reverberating keyboards and wah-wah guitars. When the effects work, such as on "Let Me Show You" and "Get On the Inside," Hutchence's personality is well matched to the soundscapes, igniting with the same fire Gill once lent to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Other times, they cut too close to the tired bones of the chemically enhanced post-Manchester sound, robbing Hutchence of his intense sensuality. Obviously, the singer and his producers did not intend for this to be his musical epitaph, but such as it is, the album is too slick and commercially crass. It's hard to avoid foreshadowed readings of songs like "Don't Save Me from Myself" and "Possibilities," where he sings, "If you told me nothing's perfect / Hearts are broken, nothing's free / I could show you why it's worth it / That the way that it's meant to be." This second-rate Achtung, Baby will get more attention than it deserves because Hutchence is dead. It would have been a much more fitting tribute to the singer's legacy if the producers had allowed fans to simply hear the full power of his voice, unmasked by their own.

If you have any remaining doubts that Willie is one of the giants of 20th century music, just give this 100-song career retrospective a spin. BILL NELSON - Getting the Holy Ghost Across (1986)
256
Bill Nelson is a prolific guitarist, songwriter, painter and experimental musician from England. Using his trademark E-bow guitar, marimbas and synths Bill flavours each track with eastern flourishes to create a sophisticated musical palette. Though Bill himself questions the 80's production values on this record, the sound is gorgeous and there is a rare emotionality present which were absent in the majority of the clinical, glossy produced records of the day. Part of that emotionality stems from the personal upheavals Bill was going through during the recording of the album. The results are some of Bill's most sumptuous songs he had written up to that point. For many Nelson acolytes, this album has long been overdue a re-release and on reflection this is truly a lost gem from the art-pop 80's, alongside the best of The Associates, Simple Minds, David Sylvian and others of the era.

The Best Of Ted Nugent & The Amboy Dukes (1999)
320
In the late '60s, when such things mattered, Ted Nugent was quickly gaining a reputation as a young-gun guitar hotshot, largely based on the back-to-back success of two singles issued by his group, the Amboy Dukes. The first, "Baby Please Don't Go," was a hopped-up rendition of the old blues standard, which Nugent and the band had learned off the version by Van Morrison's group, Them. The second was a group original, "Journey to the Center of the Mind," one of those tunes that shows up regularly on TV record ads for "Psychedelic Groovy '60s" collections. Nugent and the group continued to make great, musically interesting albums for the tiny Mainstream label, but had no more hits.

He is one of the new, young singers that has appeared on the scene that, much to my delight, has a great voice, is an excellent performer and has a great knowledge about the roots of this music.
The album features a stellar line-up of musicians headed up by Bonnie Raitt (slide guitar on “If Our Hearts Ain’t In It”) and including a duet (“Conversation”) with Ruthie Foster. The Nashville band included producer Glen Scott on keyboards and backing vocals, Tommy Sims (Bruce Springsteen, Kelly Clarkson, Eric Clapton) on guitar, bass and backing vocals, Lemar Carter on drums (Carrie Underwood, Joss Stone, India.Arie) and other Nashville musical

The album is a musical dramatisation of the last week of the life of Jesus Christ, beginning with his entry into Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion. However, greater emphasis is placed on the interpersonal relationships of the major characters, in particular, Jesus, Judas and Mary Magdalene. The album reached #1 on the Billboard chart in 1971 and served as a launching pad for numerous stage productions on Broadway and in the West End.

ERIC CLAPTON - E.C. Was Here (1975)
320
Released in the same year as 1975's "There's One In Every Crows", E.C. WAS HERE is a live album short on content but long in presentation. Backed by his usual mid-70's studio cohorts (George Terry, Jamie Oldaker, Yvonne Elliman, Marcy Levy, etc.), Clapton ignored his then-current material off CROWD and 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD, instead choosing to explore his immediate, post-Cream era along with some extended, old favorites. "Presence Of The Lord" and "Can't Find My Way Home" were retrieved from Blind Faith's sole album and both are infused with a subtle, spiritual feeling of someone who's emerged from a long period of sorrow. The remainder of this live document of mysterious origin features Clapton finding his way through material by Robert Johnson ("Ramblin' On My Mind) and Charles Brown ("Driftin' Blues") using a laconic drawl and a quietly effective style of playing that his 70's work became known for. Of particular note is a rousing version of "Further On Up The Road," which quickly became a Clapton live staple for the remainder of the 70's.
Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Yvonne Elliman (vocals); George Terry (guitar); Dick Sims (organ); Carl Radle (bass); Jamie Oldaker (drums); Marcy Levy (tambourine).
