SHERYL CROW - Sheryl Crow (1996)
320
Skeptics who attributed the success of Sheryl Crow's 1994 debut, Tuesday Night Music Club, to a combination of Crow's seductive good looks and a shrewd choice of collaborators have been effectively silenced by the range and depth of songs and performances on her self-produced, pointedly self-titled sequel. Playing guitars and keyboards, and building a triumphant, layered vocal style, Crow is tough as nails and drolly soulful on the deft "Change," as noteworthy for Crow's crafty lyrics ("Hello, it's me, I'm not at home/ If you'd like to reach me, leave me alone...") as for its solid, midtempo groove. "Maybe Angels," "If It Makes You Happy," and "Everyday Is a Winding Road" are only the most familiar highlights in a varied and absorbing set that argues Crow is no one's invention but her own.

NEIL DIAMOND - Classics: The Early Years (1983)
320
Neil Diamond first achieved international success in the 1970s and '80s with his splashy, big-budget productions. But in the mid-'60s, Diamond was just another respected journeyman songwriter who, like Paul Simon, Lou Reed, and many others, had cut his teeth cranking out tunes at New York's celebrated Brill Building, a center for post-World War Two American songwriting. During this time, Diamond wrote a flurry of excellent songs that have taken on a life of their own. "Classics: The Early Years" captures the singer at what some consider his creative apex.

PAUL PENA - New Train (2000)
320
Paul Pena should have been a star. Maybe he would have been if this album had been released in 1973, when it was recorded. Well, except for two of its numbers: "Jet Airliner" was such a big hit for Steve Miller it sustained the blind singer-guitarist through the lean years, and "Gonna Move" has become a favorite of R&B bands. But the best tracks are numbers like "Let's Move and Groove Together," on which Pena makes like Marvin Gaye--his husky voice working the magic of eros. Or "Cosmic Mirror," which recalls nothing less than Hendrix's "Machine Gun," testifying to Pena's brawny-toned guitar virtuosity. (He also outplays Miller's version of "Jet Airliner" with Clapton-like bends and vibrato.) If spirituals and country are your bag, Pena captures a seeker's fervor in the title track's freedom prayer and turns "Venutian Lady" into a tripped-out reflection of hippie-era Nashville. The good news is that now Pena may get his shot. He's making a new album, and this time there will be no waiting.
Recorded at Intermedia, Boston, Massachusetts and Wally Heider Studios, San Francisco, California in December 1973.
Rolling Stone - 4 stars out of 5 - "...The funk is front-and-center here...and Pena's guitar blends Buddy Guy's ice-pick class with the rainbow blues of Jimi Hendrix....[his] voice is a blast of fresh air..."

SWEET SUZI & THE BLUES EXPERIENCE
- Unbroken (2008)

Once you’ve seen a live performance by “Sweet Suzi and the Blues Experience”, you will be hooked. They put their own unique spin on the blues…this is not a female singer who has been wronged but a female singer who has done the wrong doing…the tough, “take that!” attitude of this band is addictive. Sultry yet powerful vocals backed by a band of extremely soulful musicians churns up the “perfect storm” of blues. With original tunes as well as cover songs by legends such as Koko Taylor, Robert Cray and Shemekia Copeland in their basic set list, “SS&BX” promises to stimulate every die hard blues fan who is tired of hearing the same old stuff. They reached down deep into the blues archives and came up with some raw and intense blues magic made up of guts, growl and emotion. Anytime “SS&BX” hits the stage, they prove that they are a “blues hurricane”, a phrase coined by Howie Haber, Vice President of the Downstate NY Blues Association, to describe a past SS&BX show.

GINO MATTEO - I've Been Thinkin' (2007)

"I’ve Been Thinkin’" is the debut album of Los Angeles based blues artist, Gino Matteo. "I’ve Been Thinkin’", is a compilation of stories relevant to Gino's strles as an unknown musical artist trying to establish his unique songwriting abilities and performance style. The track selection is eclectic and doesn’t lend itself to genre classification. Some songs are rockin’, some thoughtful, others get you on your feet and grooving to the funk. Gino has a moving blues voice and passionate guitar style that touches everyone. To classify this album is difficult. But, it brings blues from the streets of New Orleans and Chicago to the urban metropolitan area of Los Angeles, with a twist; creating “Urban Blues”. If Pearl Jam and Parliament had a baby that grew up at B.B. King’s house on Bourbon Street……...This is what you would get.

It consists of compositions by Stephen Stills, and is one of four high-profile albums released by each partner of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the wake of their chart-topping Déja Vu album of 1970. The album features an array of well-known guest musicians, unsurprisingly including David Crosby and Graham Nash, who contribute vocals. Ringo Starr drums on two tracks under the pseudonym "Richie," which he also used for his contribution to the London Sessions album by American bluesman The Howlin' Wolf, recorded in England the same year. Stills' album is also the only album in rock and roll history to which both Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix supplied guitar work. ORANGE IS IN - Another Lame Semi -Tragedy (2006)

Orange Is In was born out of the years of writing, recording and constant quoting of the movie Stripes by two talented veterans of the Houston music scene, George Kovacik and Jeff Balke. In 2002, the two were joined by established veterans of the Houston music scene including Chris Rogers (late of Skillit) on guitar, Amy Price (late of Gordian Knot and the Buddhacrush) on violin and Leesa Harrington-Squyres (late of Carolyn Wonderland) on drums. A blend of pop hooks, hard-driving rhythms and a rootsy edge, the band has already won fans in Houston and around the Texas music scene. Recording over the summer and fall of 2005, in January 2006, orange is in released its first full-length CD, Another Lame Semi-Tragedy. Full of complex strles of adult life, the tracks from Another Lame Semi-Tragedy are in stark contrast to the tongue-in-cheek title. DOC & MERLE WATSON - Black Mountain Rag (2006)
VBR
Doc Watson's influence on country guitar playing is incalculable, and taken alone, his solo records are more than enough to call his career legendary. But by the 1970s, Watson was performing with his son Merle and this compilation captures the duo's high-water mark in the early '80s, shortly before Merle's tragically early death. The listener will find impeccably played roots tunes of all varieties embellished with very slight touches of contemporary rock & roll.
The 24 tracks on this CD (if you count the medleys) bring the listener an excellent selection of Watson's playing and singing. Ably supported by his son Merle and a dozen or so other musicians who appear on various tracks, Watson presents a potpourri of traditional folk songs interspersed with some countrified pop and jazz standards.

THE GUESS WHO - The Best Of The Guess Who (1971)
320
The Guess Who is a Canadian rock band, that was one of the first to establish a major successful following in their own country while still residing there. They were the first Canadian rock group to have a No.1 hit in the United States .
As good as a "best-of" gets, the collection shows the full range of what these rockers could do. The riff-centric heaviness of "American Woman," the band's best-known song, may lead the uninitiated to think of the Guess Who as mere hard rockin' Neanderthals, but as this diverse set shows, the band could flit from baroque pop-balladry ("These Eyes") to psychedelic folk-rock ("No Time"), to evocative, jazz-inflected grooves ("Undun"). The range of styles here--whether lush, harmony-laden soft pop or backbeat-driven rock--serves as a reminder that the Guess Who were one of the more versatile and interesting bands of the late-'60s/early-'70s pop/rock mainstream.

ELVIS COSTELLO - My Aim Is True (1977)
192
Elvis Costello is an English musician and singer-songwriter. Costello came to prominence as an early participant in London's pub rock scene in the mid-1970s, and later became associated with the punk rock and New Wave musical genres, before establishing his own unique voice in the 1980s.
Elvis Costello kicked off his debut album with a formal device that would also serve his next two long-players well: the first thing you hear is his voice. That opening phrase--"Now that your picture's in the paper..."- was more than sneakily, if not intentionally, appropriate, since Costello was quickly declared the second coming. It's become de rigueur to dis the pub-rock backing of U.S. band Clover, but their work here is satisfactorily edgy; guitarist John McFee makes some of the arrangements with his wailingly articulate fills. The Rykodisc CD restores the album's British sequence, adds the eternal "Watching the Detectives," and kicks in a slew of bonus tracks, including the intriguing "Honky Tonk" demos.

ELVIS COSTELLO - This Year's Model (1978)
VBR
With his second album, Elvis Costello firmly established himself as one of rock's--not just punk/new wave's--premier singer-songwriters. Building on the promise of his '77 debut, My Aim Is True, Costello put together a backing touring trio, the Attractions (keyboardist Steve Nieve, bassist Bruce Thomas, and drummer Pete Thomas), and their versatility helped Costello define himself as a punk-fuelled power-pop force. Sporting influences ranging from Bob Dylan (the stream-of-consciousness "Pump It Up") to Burt Bacharach (the Dusty Springfield-worthy "Little Triggers"), this '78-released collection also features such righteously angry anthems as the anti-conformist "This Year's Girl," and the anti-MOR classic, "Radio Radio."

With six consecutive albums in Billboard's Top 10-four of them Top 5-Foreigner's driving, hard-edged but soulful sound is as urgent as ever, and their "Hot Blooded" legacy has never sounded better than on Rhino's new 2-CD Definitive Collection of their top hits and greatest tracks.

FREDDIE MERCURY & MONSERRAT CABALLE
- Barcelona (1988)
320
"Barcelona" is an album recorded by Freddie Mercury and operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé. The album was recorded in 1987 and 1988, and released in 1988. After Barcelona was selected to be the next Olympic city, Freddie was approached to write a song as a theme for the forthcoming games. The idea was to create a duet with Montserrat, as she is from that city. During the initial meetings, Freddie and Montserrat had developed a respect for each others music and voices. They soon decided to work on an album together, with Mercury and Mike Moran taking the creative lead as songwriters. Some opera fans thought the music was too pop influenced. Similarly, some rock fans found it to be far too operatic.

PETER FRAMPTON - Wind Of Change (1972)
192
Released in 1972, this was Peter Frampton's first solo album after several years as a band member, and with the use of strings, flutes and marimba on the opening track he was perhaps making a statement that he intended to move away from the heavy blues-rock of Humble Pie. The album unfolds with an interesting mixture of R&B, acoustic guitar-based soft rock, and gentle ballads, and many of the songs have interesting arrangements and catchy melodies.

MARK FORD & THE BLUE LINE
- Mark Ford & The Blue Line (1998)
320
Mark Ford is truely one of the most unique blues artists performing today. Though Paul Butterfield was his inspiration he has always been an original in both his harp playing and his song writing. Along with his brothers Robben and Patrick Ford, Mark has continued the family tradition of doing whatever feels right and not worrying about what others might say about the right or wrong way to play the blues. On these recordings he is once again backed up by his brother Robben, and his band the Blue Line, and he is produced by his brother Patrick. The songs go from moody to all out fun and the words go from silly to quite serious at times. This release features harp playing like few can do it and the energy of Mark and the band is enough to excite and satisfy anyone.

TOMMY BOLIN - Private Eyes (1976)
320
Private Eyes was recorded six months before Bolin's unexpected death, while Tommy's short ride replacing Ritchie Blackmore in the legendary Deep Purple was on the outs. The flagship cut from Private Eyes effort is the storming "Post Toastee", a bold nine-minute track which stands out as an AOR masterpiece from the wild life '70's. Other noteworthy numbers from the eight song disc include the thumping "Bustin' Out For Rosey", the cool strut of "Shake The Devil" and the smooth album closer, "You Told Me That You Loved Me". Unlike Teaser, Private Eyes was laid down with the official Tommy Bolin Band, which at that time included Norma Jean Bell, Reggie McBride, Mark Stein, and Bobby Berge. In the end Private Eyes is not quite as diverse as the Teaser LP, however the album is comprised by an exceptional set of songs, from a truly great musician.

BIG DADDY G - Topless (2000)
VBR
Picking up on the decadent image and rowdy approach of vintage blues acts, guitarist Big Daddy G began making a splash around the turn of the century. The club circuit had shaped his music into a fiery attack before any records had been released, and a chance meeting with organist/singer Tortoise Blue gave Big Daddy G the chance to form a strong band around his playing. In 1998, 4 Blues became the first recorded effort from the duo. A tribute to a deceased bandmate as well as a rough first effort, the uneven album led to the far superior Topless in 2000. Nominated for a Juno Award that year, the roaring album became a hit with blues audiences and the accolades began pouring in. A strong live act as well, Big Daddy G began scoring spots at several Canadian blues festivals while putting together their first live album. Entitled Blue Sound, the record captured their energetic stage show accurately and gave Big Daddy G the chance to explore his own songs a little more.

EDGAR WINTER - Roadwork (1972)

Gospel, soul, r&b, jazz, blues, rock and roll - this record features it all. A live experience not too be missed, it showcases many fine musicians, whether it's Jerry LaCroix enticing the Apollo audience to dance, or Edgar Winter's banshee screams, or Rick Derringer's guitar playing, or Jon Smith's brilliant saxophone leading the horn section's punchy arrangements - this record has everything. Starting strong with Jerry's "Save the Planet", it keeps the tempo up with his self-penned "Jive, Jive, Jive", and continues with Jerry offering a rousing vocal on "I Can't Turn You Loose". Rick Derringer comes in for a rocking "Still Alive and Well" and "Back in the U.S.A.". Johnny Winter does a turn with Rick's "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo", and brother Edgar arrests everyone with an incredible 17-minute "Tobacco Road". The last three cuts were recorded at New York's Apollo, where these guys show they can hold their own. Edgar gets funky with "Cool Fool" and "Do Yourself a Favor". Jerry wraps it all up with a get-down version of "Turn on Your Lovelight". This is a simply excellent album well deserving of its platinum sales status.

The concert was originally broadcast live on a Los Angeles radio station. The first cd was originally released as the bonus disc of the Rastaman Vibration Deluxe Edition. The magnificent encore of this concert is included on the second disc of Live at the Roxy. The Roxy is a much smaller venue than those where Marley's previous live albums Live! and Babylon By Bus were recorded. The recordings made for Live at the Roxy have a more intimate sound as a result. Bob Marley sings some of his more politically orientated songs at this concert, in a much slower more laid back style than in other recordings.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD - Street Survivors - Deluxe Edition (2008)
VBR
Sadly, STREET SURVIVORS would prove to be the final Lynryd Skynyrd album of the Ronnie Van Zant-era. Only three days after this, the band's fifth studio album (sixth overall) was released in 1977, the band boarded the tragic plane flight that killed singer Ronnie Van Zant and new members guitarist Steve Gaines and background vocalist Cassie Gaines. The fact that STREET SURVIVORS was one of Skynyrd's best albums only intensified the tragedy--it appeared as though the band was peaking artistically. "What's Your Name" caught the band at its most fun and playful, the grim "That Smell" warned against the dangers of drug and alcohol addiction, and "I Know A Little" showed off its country roots.

LINDA RONSTADT & EMMYLOU HARRIS
- Western Wall - The Tucson Sessions (1999)
320
Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris have frequently collaborated over the course of their long careers. Their voices are made for each other in a yin-yang meeting of Ronstandt's rich velvet alto and Harris' songbird-sweet soprano. "The Tucson Sessions" takes their collaborations to new heights. A collection of covers and originals tracing various paths of love and loss, the performances seem to have breathed in the desert where they were recorded. Arrangements airy as the space between desert and sky are grounded by gritty guitars, splashed with color from folk instruments and filled with glorious harmonies. Well known singer/songwriters are covered - Patty Griffin, Andy Prieboy, Rosanne Cash, Leonard Cohen, and Bruce Springsteen. Traditional presentations of Cohen's "Sisters of Mercy" and Springsteen's "Across the Border" take on new dimensions as sung by women.
The album was extremely well-received and landed on many year-end top-ten lists.

ALISON KRAUSS - Now That I've Found You

In the '90s, no contemporary artist loomed larger in the world of bluegrass than Alison Krauss. With her group Union Station, the young singer/fiddler (who began as a child prodigy) spent the decade bringing traditional bluegrass roots into the mainstream of country music, garnering numerous Grammys in the process. She was the youngest artist ever to become a member of the Grand Old Opry, and she inspired scads of young musicians to help carry on the bluegrass torch.

GEORGE HARRISON - The Harri-Spector Show (2001)

Some mixed memories of The Beatles' split will certainly come back to you listening to Harri and Spector going through songs like The Drifters' 'Save The Last Dance For Me', The Animals' 'Bring It On Home To Me' and the old little tune of 'Leaning On A Lamppost'. As a special treat George and Phil also please us with their own version of one Beatles-tune. Here's a unique opportunity to hear George take the lead in McCartney's Obladi-Oblada. But there's more. Like we said before, for close listeners, hidden away between the various run-throughs at the start of track 2) there's a short version (a line or two) of John Lennon's song 'God', again with fellow ex-Beatle George taking the lead. All of this Harri-Spector session is acoustic. It's just George and Phil pling their guitars, singing to it.

CHRIS REA - The Blue Cafe (1998)
320
A confident and consistent album, The Blue Cafe combines Rea's atmospheric songwriting with larger doses of his slide guitar playing than usual. An overlooked talent of his, it underlies this collection of contemporary sounding songs rooted in dance beats and blues (a strange combination, but it works). Two songs from different sides of the spectrum illustrate the album well: "Sweet Summer Day" is one of the best from a master of summer anthems ("On the Beach," "All Summer Long," etc.), while "Where Do We Go From Here?" is a bitingly perceptive indictment of the emptiness of consumer culture laid against a cool, smooth backing track. All in all, this is one of Rea's most introspective albums and a strong addition to his catalog.

EMMYLOU HARRIS - Red Dirt Girl (2000)
320
Primarily known as an interpreter of artists ranging from Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan to Townes Van Zandt and David Olney, for RED DIRT GIRL Emmylou Harris composed most of the material herself, the first time she'd done this since 1985's BALLAD OF SALLY ROSE. This follow-up to 1995's splendid Daniel Lanois-produced WRECKING BALL finds her applying that album's same ethereal touch, thanks to Lanois protege Malcom Burn who helms this project's production. Long the godmother of alternative-country's traditionalist wing, Harris here writes songs with Luscious Jackson's Jill Cunniff, sings a duet with Dave Matthews ("My Antonia"), and recruits Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa to provide harmonies on the album's most compelling ballad ("Tragedy"). The production by Malcolm Burn applies sonic treatments of drum machines, shimmering guitars, and echoed vocals to a song cycle by Harris that is largely original and deeply personal, filled with dream imagery and evocations of a spiritual quest. While material such as "Michaelangelo" and "Bang the Drum Slowly" suffers from an arty ponderousness, it's doubtful that Harris has ever recorded an album that means more to her than this one.

NICK MOSS & THE FLIP TOPS - Sadie Mae (2005)

Nick Moss is one of the hardest working bluesman around playing hundreds of dates a year. And there is no one living who can play and write vintage Chicago Blues like Nick Moss. On each record, Nick assembles quality players (The Flip Tops) that capture the Chicago sound that makes you feel like you’re in the original Checkerboard Lounge sipping a bourbon. Nick’s Robert Johnson style vocals, biting tube-amp guitar, and Chicago rhythm anchor down each song on “Sadie Mae”. And Nick is subtle and versatile, knowing when to kick in a solo and when to showcase his band. His songwriting is as strong as ever, telling blues tales that are both upbeat and down and out. Pathos is the quality that would best describe the overall feel of Nick’s sound and presentation, that sad empathy that is the antithesis of the Chicago blues.

ANN WILSON - Hope & Glory (2007)
VBR
After over 30 years as the lead singer and face of Heart ("Crazy on You", "Barracuda"...), Ann Wilson's first solo album is a collection of covers of vintage 1960s and '70s rock anthems, many of them seemingly chosen for their connection to the sociopolitical climate of 2007. This means lots of anti-war anthems along the lines of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A -Gonna Fall" and, more obliquely, Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising." Throughout, Wilson is in fine, powerful voice, and the album's simple, hard rocking arrangements keep her still remarkable singing front and center throughout.

ELLA FITZGERALD - These Are The Blues (1963)
256
Ella Fitzgerald was celebrated for many things throughout her long career, but never for being a blues singer, so this remarkable foray into classic blues, recorded in 1963, may come as something of a surprise. This is an arresting examination of some classic blues songs, variously associated with Ma Rainey, Alberta Hunter, Bessie Smith, and Leroy Carr, and ranging further afield for Joe Turner's "Cherry Red." Though Fitzgerald's voice is usually noted for its lightness and flexibility, it often assumes a stateliness here that suits the more somber material. She's accompanied by an excellent band, with frequent collaborators Roy Eldridge, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, and Gus Johnson. The unusual presence of organist Wild Bill Davis, whose fulsome approach adds to the sheer majesty of the material, emphasizes a kinship with gospel music.

STEVIE WONDER - Greatest Hits (1968)
320
When it was released, Stevie Wonder's first hits collection, a 12-track disc tracing his work from 1963 to 1967, served a common function of compilations: It gathered together stray, disparate pieces, from "Fingertips - Pt. 2" to "I Was Made to Love Her," and focused attention on the artist. Wonder had a spotty singles record: five Top Ten hits, but only two of them in succession over the four-and-a-half years, yet Greatest Hits made him seem like a consistent hitmaker with an astounding range, from those early harmonica instrumentals to soulful wailers like "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" and even oddball ballads like "A Place in the Sun." By now this set has long since been eclipsed, notably by the Looking Back album, but as a demonstration of Wonder's early promise, it is notable.

THE DOORS OF THE 21ST CENTURY
- Live In Hollywood: New Year's Eve (2004)
192
Purists may scorn the reality of a Doors reunion since the death of iconic frontman and American poet Jim Morrison in 1971. The Lizard King hasn't been with us for more than 30 years, but his legend thrives. Despite releasing only six albums - from 1967's The Doors to 1971's L.A. Woman--over the short span of their abbreviated career, the Doors' music has become immortal. Their innovative blend of psychedelic jazz and blues rock, intensified by Morrison's mystical and meaningful lyrics, continues to compel listeners young and old. By reuniting under the moniker "The Doors of the 21st Century" (without Doors drummer John Densmore), Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek and Doors guitarist Robby Krieger are giving generations of Doors fans a rare gift. For some it's a second chance, for still others an only chance, to experience live some of the magic that was the Doors in concert.

BUDDY MILES EXPRESS - Hell And Back (1994)

George Allen Miles, Jr. (1947 - 2008), known as Buddy Miles, was an American rock and funk drummer, most known as a member of Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys from 1969 until Hendrix's death in 1970. Miles played in a variety of rhythm and blues and soul acts as a teenager, including Ruby & the Romantics, the Ink Spots, the Delfonics and Wilson Pickett. By 1967 he moved to Chicago where he formed the Electric Flag with guitarist Mike Bloomfield. The blues-soul-rock band made their live debut at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and released their debut album, A Long Time Comin', the next year. Miles sometimes sang lead vocals for the group in addition to playing drums. The group broke up after their second album and Miles formed the Buddy Miles Express.

LEONARD COHEN - Death Of A Ladies' Man (1977)
320
Death of a Ladies' Man is the fifth and most controversial of Leonard Cohen's albums. Produced by the storied Phil Spector, it was a surprise to some fans when the typically minimalist Cohen was surrounded completely by Spector's Wall of Sound. Songs were written by the two over a course of three weeks, and Spector described it as "some great fuckin' music". Not everyone agreed with this assessment, preferring Cohen's earlier acoustic folk music to the jazz-, rock- and even funk-influenced arrangements. Death of a Ladies' Man was recorded in Los Angeles, California. Before Cohen had completed his vocals, Spector barred him from the studio (supposedly under armed guard) and mixed the album by himself. For this reason some of the songs only have "guiding vocals" originally meant to be redone later.

DANNY GATTON - Hot Rod Guitar:
The Danny Gatton Anthology (1999)
320
One of the most gifted guitarists of the post-Sixties generation, Danny Gatton was revered among guitar fanatics but almost unknown outside that circle. His early recordings are marked by a tendency to throw every one of his impressive licks into every solo, but his last albums are masterpieces of restrained mayhem. Gatton was such a genre-jumper that he never found a commercial niche; instead, he was the guitarist's guitarist, fluent and fluid in various forms of rock, country, jazz, and blues. But he clearly had an innate fondness for country, especially bluegrass (perhaps that's what made him the fastest picker of his time). Among the country-oriented highlights here are the scintillating "Redneck Jazz," the rockabilly "Love My Baby" (with Robert Gordon singing), "Sun Medley" (with Delbert McClinton's Fogerty-esque barking), and "Linus and Lucy/Orange Blossom Medley," in which "Steel Guitar Rag" flashes by in a blur. But his country flair also manifests itself in more subtle ways (fingerpicking the blues, for example). If you don't mind a crash course in other American music mixed in with your country--it's not like being forced to eat beets with your burger, after all--then Gatton's your man.

THE PRETTY THINGS - Get The Picture (1965)
320
Everybody's got to have an idol, an ideal that one strives to reach and, if possible, surpass. For the Pretty Things, such an ideal were the Rolling Stones. This was really a predictable thing, though: the band was founded around 1964 by Dick Taylor, former bass player for the Stones before they actually had a recording contract. Dick quit the band because of financial troubles and personal ambitions (not content with his minor role since Brian Jones shoved him in the background), and became one of the founding fathers for the Pretty Things - but the band still kept a tight connection with the Stones. Initially, their image was supposed to be modelled after the Stones, only even more hardcore: they were even wilder, had even longer hair, and were banned from even more TV shows than the Stones ever have. At least, that's how the legend goes. Too bad that the actual music played by the Pretties was nowhere near as enduring as the Stones' stuff: the band was nowhere near as professional or talented, and their lead singer, Phil May, had, to put it mildly, a pretty limited vocal potential. Thus, the Pretties' early albums are rife with filler, even if the aggressive rock'n'roll energy contained in their best stuff easily compensates for the weaker numbers.

JEFF HEALEY

Legendary blues and jazz guitarist Jeff Healey has died at 41. The Canadian musician had battled cancer his entire life. "It was something he fought with considerable bravery," his publicist, Richard Flohil, told Newsnet late Sunday. Healey, 41, had lost his eyesight to a rare form of the disease, Retinoblastoma, at the age of one. The musician had performed with such acclaimed guitar players as B. B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins and George Harrison. He was one of the world's best blues/rock guitar players. R.I.P.
THE JEFF HEALEY BAND - Platinum & Gold Collection (2004)
192
Canada's Jeff Healey enjoyed success in the early 1990s with a pair of flamethrowing covers of John Hiatt songs, "Angel Eyes" and"Confidence Man," both of which are included on this collection of tracks drawn from his four Arista albums. The blind guitarist's unorthodox laptop playing style, coupled with a solid rhythm section of Tom Stephen on drums and Joe Rockman on bass, gave the songs a bluesy, hardrocking and slightly edgy feel, a template the trio never abandoned, and which gives this compilation a comfortable feeling of cohesion. A cover of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" works well here, as does a gospeltinged take on Jimi Hendrix's "Angel." But the most affecting track may well be the album's closer, a looselimbed, barroom romp through Big Joe Williams' "Highway 49," which just plain rocks, pure and simple.

BACK DOOR SLAM - Roll Away (2007)
VBR
Back Door Slam s name comes from the Robert Cray blues classic, and Cray s influence and that of other blues greats like Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Rory Gallagher, early Fleetwood Mac plus the late Stevie Ray Vaughan imbues their intoxicating, guitar-driven sound. Knowles, who also writes most of the songs, first picked up the guitar at age 11 after hearing Dire Straits Sultans of Swing on his father s cassette. Skipping the usual three-chord songbook approach to learning the instrument, he taught himself to play the classic song in its entirety and, in doing so, also discovered his destiny. After hearing Back Door Slam at SXSW in March, 2007, Patrick MacDonald wrote in the Seattle Times: I heard the spirit of Jimi Hendrix coming from the open, streetside windows of a joint called B.D. Riley's. It was Red House, executed superbly by a surprisingly young trio called Back Door Slam, from the Isle of Man in the U.K. The club was packed and so was the street outside. Folks were transfixed by this kid on guitar, who played with a fiery spirit and sang with conviction, making the song his own.

MELVIN TAYLOR & THE SLACK BAND - Dirty Pool (1997)
320
Melvin Taylor's technical prowess is quite amazing. He can play with amazing speed and clarity. He makes extensive use of the wah-wah pedal, and also incorporates other Hendrix style effects, to create some very powerful solos. This is in direct contrast to the lighter soul/jazz fusion (but not simple) chord riffs he plays while singing. The reserve nature of his vocals adds even more emphasis to this conflict. There are two Stevie Ray Vaughan songs on the CD, the title cut, Dirty Pool, and Telephone Song. Melvin does them in his own style, and does them well. There are a couple of blues standards, Albert King's Floodin' In California, and Born Under a Bad Sign, in which Melvin pulls out all the stops. Soul is loosely represented on the CD too, with Right Place, Wrong Time, and I Ain't Superstitious.

NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS
- Electric Blue Watermelon (2005)
192
North Mississippi Allstars is a blues-rock/jam band from Hernando, Mississippi, founded in 1996. The band is composed of brothers Luther Dickinson (guitar, vocals) and Cody Dickinson (drums, keyboards), and Chris Chew (electric bass guitar).
ELECTRIC BLUE WATERMELON furthers the notion that the North Mississippi Allstars have become something of a rolling history of 20th-century musical forms. Deeply rooted in Delta blues of the heavily rhythmic, modal variety pioneered by Charlie Patton (the band covers Patton's "Mississippi Bollweevil" here) and practiced by latter-century artists like R.L. Burnside, the Allstars spread their wings to encompass old-school rock & roll, country, electrified blues rock, '60s psychedelia, hip-hop, and a dash of alt-rock sensibility. Typically uneasy musical partners go remarkably well together in the Allstars world. Even the deepest roots music (there are two Otha Turner compositions, originally written for fife and drums) and a nod to contemporary country (Dickinson's duet with Lucinda Williams on "Hurry Up Sunrise") make it into the mix, proving the Allstars to be one of the most versatile and wide-ranging bands around.
