PAUL McCARTNEY - Wingspan (2001)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
*

Despite the title of this two-CD set, WINGSPAN is actually a mix of Paul McCartney's solo songs and work created with his '70s band, divided into "Hits" and "History" discs. Material like "Silly Love Songs," "My Love," "Bluebird" and "Listen To What The Man Said" fully embraces Macca's reputation as the romantic, less intense half of the Lennon/McCartney songwriting juggernaut. While these fluffy smashes found many critics painting him as a pandering lightweight, McCartney also rocked the charts as hard as Lennon with numbers like "Band On The Run," "Jet," "Junior's Farm," and "Hi Hi Hi." Along the way McCartney and Wings had a hand in a few pop-culture milestones. Among the most notable were creating arguably the greatest James Bond theme to date ("Live and Let Die") and topping the UK charts at the height of the 1977 punk revolution and a modern Celtic folk anthem ("Mull Of Kintyre"). Other more obscure but equally deserving Wings moments include the epic anthem "Rockestra Theme" (written for the London benefit concert in aid of UNICEF and Kampuchean refugees) and a live version of the ultra-funky "Coming Up" recorded at a Glasgow concert.

CLAUDIA BETTINAGLIO - Saving All My Love (2001)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Claudia Bettinaglio sings rock, r & b, blues, jazz and the like. Her singing voice is full and round and drenched in blues feeling. Hearing her sing one does not imagine easily that she is indeed a young woman from Switzerland with an Italian family background and that SAVING ALL MY LOVE is her coming out album as a solo artist. Yes indeed, Claudia Bettinaglio is a new and very exciting voice from the heart of Europe. This album pays homage not only to one man's singular songwriting art but also documents a singer's personal fascination for the depth of his work. A fascination that has turned into an intense and practical confrontation with a set of immaculate songs. This journey includes songs from a time span of almost thirty years. Every period of Tom Waits' writing is included – from "Ice Cream Man" (1973) to "Cold Water" (1999). Claudia Bettinaglio is a surely fan, but she does not try to imitate what cannot be imitated. With her powerful, melodic voice she puts her own stamp on these songs and proves how well this material – that is so much marked by the creator's very original voice – lends itself to new interpretations. After having digested this set of fourteen songs it's clear – Claudia Bettinaglio knows what she's doing...

CHRIS REA - The Road To Hell (1989)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

British singer and guitarist Chris Rea has enjoyed a run of popularity in Europe during the late '80s and early '90s after almost a decade of previous recording. Rea started out performing with a local group called Magdalene, taking David Coverdale's place; the band won a national talent contest in 1975 as the Beautiful Losers, but still failed to get a record contract. Rea left the band and recorded the album Whatever Happened to Benny Santini?, which alluded to a discarded stage name, which went gold on the strength of the U.S. Top 20 hit "Fool (If You Think It's Over)." Rea was not heard from again in the U.S. for some time, concentrating his efforts on his main fan base of Europe. A compilation of tracks from Rea's '80s albums, New Light Through Old Windows, was released in 1988 and sold well in the U.K. and Europe and charted in the U.S. Rea followed it up with the critically acclaimed The Road to Hell, which many regarded as his best album. It and its follow-up, Auberge, went to the top of the U.K. album charts, but did not prove as successful in the U.S., where he has failed to chart with his subsequent releases.

GLENN HUGHES & FRIENDS
- A Tribute To Tommy Bolin (1998)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

After Tommy’s death, Glenn Hughes continued to make music on his own terms, playing with an astonishing variety of musicians from Black Sabbath to Earth, Wind, and Fire, as well as leading his own bands. He never forgot the Come Taste The Band era, however; that album’s haunting closer, “You Keep On Moving,” would appear in Glenn’s sets, and he offered some pointed words for the King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents Deep Purple CD liner notes in 1995: “I didn’t really dig playing with Deep Purple, with the exception of the period with Tommy Bolin. That was a special version of the band.” 1997 Glenn made the pilgrimage to Colorado to pay tribute to his musical soulmate at the Bluebird Theater in Denver. The results — already bootlegged, but presented here in pristine quality — finally get to speak for themselves.

Recorded August 22 & 23 1997 at the Bluebird Theater, Denver, Colorado.

SCOTT HENDERSON - Collection (2007)

The Scott Henderson Collection is a decent Introduction to the fusion guitarist's work throughout the '90s. Among the 11 tracks are four recorded with bassist Gary Willis as Tribal Tech: "Space Camel," "Song Holy Hell," "Clinic Troll" and "Thick." Henderson's combination of rock, funk and blues are filtered through his conservatory jazz background, which provides an interesting combination of technical musicianship with gritty structures.

JACK BRUCE & ROBIN TROWER - Seven Moons (2008)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

This is the third album from these two legends. Jack of course the man who singlehandedly revolutionized the electric bass as the mastermind and creative force behind one of the greatest bands ever: Cream. Whereas Robin graced the first five classic Procol Harum albums with some fiery, melodic guitar, before he had a revelation hearing Jimi Hendrix, which changed his playingstyle forever. So it's not surprising that this album really is 'Cream meets Hendrix' psychedelic blues at its finest.

Willie Nelson has a habit of teaming up with some of the best names in country music. While this isn't a duet album, it does include one duet with Kenny Chesney ("Worry B Gone",) who co-produced the album as well, along with Buddy Cannon. JACK JOHNSON - In Between Dreams (2005)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

A former professional surfer and self-proclaimed beach bum, Jack Johnson is an unlikely candidate for rock-star status. Somehow, however, this everyman's mellow pop songs seem to tap into a commonly held desire for the simple life. The formula on IN BETWEEN DREAMS doesn't vary much from Johnson's previous albums, but is no less engaging--delicately strummed acoustic guitar, round bass lines, and gently funky drum patterns form a comforting bed for the Hawaii native's effortlessly soulful R&B-meets-folk vocals. Sounding at times like a more laid-back G. Love, Johnson celebrates the simple pleasures and asks the big questions with the childlike innocence that only someone living in a literal paradise could muster. "Banana Pancakes" is a Harry Nilsson-like groover that urges listeners to skip work and enjoy themselves every so often, while "Good People" decries the age of reality television with a poignancy reminiscent of Donovan at his free-spirited best. Perhaps the track that most accurately encapsulates Johnson's unique less-is-more approach, however, is "Belle," a jazzy ditty that clocks in at less than two minutes and lets a swooning accordion tell the bulk of the story.

JOHN DEE & FRIS - Country Girl (1993)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Storyteller, dancer, blues artist, and National Heritage Award recipient John Dee Holeman was born in rural Orange County, North Carolina in 1929. Over the years his musical and dancing skills were sharpened in local competitions at house parties, cornshuckings, woodcuttings, and other rural recreations. During the week he worked as a farmer and as a bulldozer and dragline operator, but on the weekends he entertained family and neighbors, never moving outside the core African American blues community. Moving to Durham, or the Bull City as it's locally known, he continued making music and dancing, usually in the company of his partner, pianist and dancer Quentin "Fris" Holloway...

LINDA RONSTADT - For Sentimental Reasons (1986)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

This was the final installment of Linda Rondstadt's successful American Songbook trilogy with arranger Nelson Riddle, who died soon after these sessions were completed. At this stage in the game Linda sounds far more confident as she ventures bold interpretations of a few Rodgers & Hart songs ("Bewitched," "My Funny Valentine," "Little Girl Blue") as well as the de rigeur Gershwin number ("But Not For Me"). Fans of the singer will be especially startled to hear her long, belting tones on "Valentine." She also tries the ultra-romantic "You Go To My Head" and Thelonius Monk's dark classic "'Round Midnight" on for size and finds they suit her just fine.

Maiden of the cancer moon - tales of valvalry. Quicksilver regularly player Moon since late 1966. By the end of 1967 it had become a "jam" song that often lasted most of a 45 minute set. The Mona here is an excellent example of Quicksilver Messenger Service at it's best - exhibiting all the "psychedelic drama" they were famed for.

02. Smokestack Lightning
This song has never been released although it was a staple in their shows from early 1966. By the time of this version they had the song crisply arranged for the twin lead guitar line-up they excelled at.

03. Who Do You Love
Another major staple of their shows since 1966. It, too, benefited through the years of jamming and stretching out to become a great half hour psychedelic voyage.

04. Suzy-Q
A real favorite of the Band and it's fans since 1966. They never released this song. The pounding cowbell introduction always brought cheers as everyone rushed for the dance floor. A great and rare example of Quicksilver's great dance energy.

Recorded live in the Studio 8-20-68. Written by Nick Gravenites but never before released.

06. Stand By Me
This was the "A" side of a 45 rpm release. It was backed by Bears. This is an early Dino Valenti ballad.

Great White is an American blues-based Hard Rock band formed in Los Angeles that gained popularity during the 1980s and early 1990s. JULIE DRISCOLL, BRIAN AUGER & THE TRINITY
- Streetnoise (1969)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 128

The final collaboration between singer Julie Driscoll (by that time dubbed as "The Face" by the British music weeklies) and Brian Auger's Trinity was Streetnoise in 1969, an association that had begun in 1966 with Steampacket, a band that also featured Rod Stewart and Long John Baldry. As a parting of the ways, however, it was to be Trinity's finest moment. A double album that featured 16 tracks, more than half of them with vocals by Driscoll, and the rest absolutely burning instrumentals by Trinity (which was Auger on organ, piano, electric piano, and vocals), Driscoll on acoustic guitar, Clive Thacker on drums, and Dave Ambrose on bass and assorted guitars.

THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA - Down In New Orleans (2008)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Recording for the first time in New Orleans, The Blind Boys are backed here by a trio of world-class New Orleans musicians: David Torkanowsky (piano), Roland Guerin (bass) and Shannon Powell (drums). Other guests include legendary pianist/producer and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Allen Toussaint, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and the horn-heavy Hot 8 Brass Band, one of the city's most vital young acts. But the band's deeply soulful and natural voices remain in the spotlight on this album. After performing together for over six decades, The Blind Boys of Alabama have enjoyed one of the more striking comebacks in recent memory. Their last several albums have earned these hipster septuagenarians the best reviews and record sales of their career, four Grammy Awards in a four year span, and a completely new, contemporary audience.

IAN GILLAN - The Very Best Of Gillan (1991)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

After leaving Deep Purple in 1973, Ian Gillan had retired from the music business to pursue other business ventures, including a motorbike manufacturing company and a hotel. These ventures all ended in failure. This fact, combined with a warm reception to his guest appearance at the Butterfly Ball in 1975 prompted him to resume a singing career and form a new band. Initially called Shand Grenade, Gillan was persuaded to change the band's name to the Ian Gillan Band. He recruited guitarist Ray Fenwick, bass player John Gustafson, keyboard player Mike Moran and Elf drummer Mark Nauseef. Using Roger Glover as producer and session musician, this lineup released their first album Child In Time in 1976. In that year Moran was replaced by Micky Lee Soule (ex-Elf and Rainbow), but for the recording of follow-up album Clear Air Turbulence he was dropped in favour of Colin Towns. The band had some success in Japan but none at all in North America and only cult status in Europe, their jazz fusion direction unappealing to pop and rock fans alike. Their next album, Scarabus (1977), had more of a rock sound but retained the jazz fusion direction. Released at the height of punk rock, there was no success beyond Japan and their label Island Records dropped them.

JULIE DRISCOLL - 1969 (1971)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Julie Driscoll was a respected vocalist of the late 1960s British pop scene, christened "The Face" by the U.K. music press. She made a number of albums with organist Brian Auger and the Brian Auger Trinity, including a 1968 hit cover of Dylan's "This Wheel's on Fire." This debut inaugurated her solo career and saw her supported by a crack crew of 'Canterbury'- associated musicians, almost all of whom would show up again several years down the road to support her next solo release.

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - Live At Monterey (1967)

Forty years ago Jimi Hendrix returned to his native country and, in one fell swoop changed the musical landscape for all time. It was the galvanizing, US debut performance of The Jimi Hendrix Experience at The Monterey International Pop Festival that propelled Hendrix and his band mates, Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, to the top ranks of international rock royalty. Now for the first time in more than 15 years, The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live At Monterey is available on limited edition Vinyl. JORMA KAUKONEN - Stars In My Crown (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

It's interesting the way things go in circles. In the early '60s, Jorma Kaukonen (or Jerry, as he was then) played blues guitar in the coffeehouses of the South Bay Area, sometimes with Janis Joplin. Now, after stints with Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, he's back to his first love, mixing blues, gospel, and country, backed by some excellent musicians. It's a blissful self-indulgence, laid-back but still quite heartfelt, although it has to be said that not all his material meets the standards ("Heart Temporary" is a decent opener, but not in the same class as "No Demon" or Johnny Cash's "The Man Comes Around"), although "A Life Well Lived" is a lovely piece of work. There are some excellent covers, a couple from the Rev. Gary Davis, and a delicious version of "By the Rivers of Babylon." As you'd expect, after four and a half decades, Kaukonen can pick a mean guitar, but he's content to let others take the lead role, especially Barry Mitterhoff's mandolin work. All in all, it makes for a great package, one to be savored over and over for its gentle, soulful heart.

DEREK TRACKSthumbupthumbupthumbup

Derek Trucks is an American guitarist (fantastic, amazing, one of the best.....), bandleader (The Derek Trucks Band), and member of The Allman Brothers Band.

DEREK TRUCKS BAND DISCOGRAPHY:

"The Derek Trucks Band" (1997)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 128

Derek Trucks is the nephew of Butch Trucks, the founding drummer of the Allman Brothers Band, and the younger man has been imitating Duane Allman's slide guitar ever since he started gigging as an 11-year-old. Now at age 18, he leads his own jazz-rock quartet through its debut album, The Derek Trucks Band. Jazz producer John Snyder convinced the teenage guitarist to include compositions by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Wayne Shorter alongside the seven originals on this mostly instrumental project. Trucks's band is able to set its amplified instruments to a crisp swing, and the leader proves himself fast and agile on the guitar, but neither he nor keyboardist Bill McKay are able to come up with solos as melodically captivating as those of the Allman Brothers Band or as harmonically startling as those of the Coltrane and Davis groups. But, at 18, Trucks still has plenty of time to evolve.

"Out Of The Madness" (1998)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 128

How many teenaged guitar prodigies can get away with playing genre-blending improvisational music and convincing blues on only their second album? Just one: Jacksonville's Derek Trucks. His musical imagination is exceeded only by his guitar prowess. Trucks, who favors slide guitar, reanimates the blues past here. On Son House's "Preachin' Blues" and Howlin' Wolf's "44," he effortlessly attains an edgy, electrifying air of tension epitomizing the honest-sounding modern blues that many others attempt so hard--and so clumsily--to achieve. Just as impressive is Truck's ongoing exploration of the transcendent jazz/rock/blues realm where guitar-packing elders like Jeff Beck, Duane Allman, Carlos Santana, and Ronnie Earl, among a few more, have dared to go--the instrumentals "Younk Funk," "Kickin' Back," "Pleasant Gardens," and "Spillway." Unlike countless other guitarists, Trucks knows better than to sully his material by singing when he can't, and he turns to Warren Haynes (of Gov't. Mule), Larry McCray, and Matt Tutor to handle the vocal chores. It's little-known Memphis resident Tutor who really pours heart and soul into songs--hear "Preachin' Blues" and "Alright." All in all, this is a strong blues-and-beyond album. Keep an eye on this Trucks kid.

"Joyful Noise (2002)"

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

The third album from guitar phenom Derek Trucks resounds with joyful noise indeed, and amazingly, it seems as though Trucks and his band run through (at least) 10 distinct genres across these 10 songs. Trucks may venture all over the musical map--blues, soul, jazz, Eastern music, to name a few stops--but he does so with a confidence and assertiveness usually found in much older musicians. Then again, he is the nephew of Butch Trucks (a fellow member of the Allman Brothers Band, Trucks's moonlighting gig) and is married to fellow guitar wiz Susan Tedeschi (who guests on this album), so it's not surprising that he seems experienced beyond his years. Joyful Noise features a host of guest artists--including Qawwali singer Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and soul legend Solomon Burke--but despite the considerable variety here, the album maintains a unified, if high-flying and eclectic, vision. Even at such a young age, Trucks already plays with skill, invention, and heart.

"Soul Serenade" (2003)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

It would be wrong to pigeonhole Derek Trucks as a southern rocker despite his ongoing day gig as the Allman Brothers Band's second guitarist. On his fourth solo album (actually recorded before his third, 2002's Joyful Noise) the young slinger shows what he's made of, and it's not barbeque and bourbon. Instead Trucks caters more to the martini crowd, giving a sophisticated cast to his slide guitar, snaking it into elegant musical conversations with a rather frivolous flute, and some off time drumming that are reminiscent of the clean jazz fusion that Traffic used to conjure up. On the opening track, "Soul Serenade"/"Rasta Man Chant," Trucks inserts some of the languid licks and flirts with Miles Davis before devolving into Bob Marley. "Bock to Bock" is a more structured affair that recalls Henry Mancini. Gregg Allman sits in on "Drown in My Own Tears" and spits out the bitter words in his grizzled voice while Truck follows along in a perfect slow dance, punctuating each of the singer's phrases with his own mournful slide. Trucks ventures south of the border in "Afro Romp" and the band evokes the great jazz drummer Elvin Jones on "Elvin."

VAN MORRISON - No Guru, no Method, no Teacher (1986)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Longtime Van Morrison fans may prefer the Belfast bard's tougher, emphatically R&B-driven work, yet it's his lusher, mid-'80s output that helped him consolidate the scrappy gains made in the prior decades. The once-heightened polarity between the earthy and the ethereal seemed muted on albums that traded in a softer-focus, romantic mysticism mirrored by the expanded scale of Morrison's band and arrangements, and left room for him to dabble in instrumental compositions or his renewed love of sax and piano. No Method, No Guru, No Teacher proves among the more durable, convincing chapters in this era, carrying a now-familiar array of symbolic touchstones (the Celtic legacy of "Tir Na Nog" or an extended instrumental allusion to a hymn set to William Blake's musings on England) and offering two of Morrison's better meditations on redemption, "In the Garden" and "A Town Called Paradise," which echoes the fevered waltz-time trance of "Astral Weeks" itself.

AMBOY DUKES - Amboy Dukes (1967)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

The Amboy Dukes were formed in Chicago by guitar prodigy Ted Nugent, a native of Detroit and already the former leader of two bands, the first begun when he was only twelve. The band rode the psychedelic wave, but it stood out for the maniacal riffs of the leader's guitar. Their historic anthem, a version of Baby Please Don' t Go, from The Amboy Dukes (1967), is a passionate blues screamed against a wall of unrelenting rhythm and guitar dissonance, played at supersonic speed.

BEE GEES - Main Course (1975)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

After several rather disappointing albums, the Gibbs Brothers have come up with perhaps their most versatile and most contemporary effort in years. Recorded at Miami's Criteria with production chores handled by Arif Mardin, this album touches base with so many different styles of music and commercial sounds, that it could be a smash on all fronts. For the first time, they could score in the soul market with several dance-oriented songs (sometimes a la Average White Band). And then there are the songs that sound like the old Bee Gees, featuring the vocal harmonies that made them a supergroup of the Sixties. Other songs are reminiscent of Bad Company, Elton John and even the Beatles but they treat each of these selections with their own mixture of instrumental and vocal excitement.

V.A. - Zabriskie Point - OST (1970)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Zabriskie Point is a soundtrack album to the Michelangelo Antonioni film of the same name. It was originally released in January 1970 and is composed of songs from various artists. A 1997 re-release includes four bonus tracks each from Jerry Garcia and Pink Floyd that were used in the film, but not the original soundtrack. Jim Morrison of the Doors wrote the track "L'America" for the film, but was rejected by Antonioni (L'America was later released on The Doors album L.A. Woman).

DISC 1 contains music by a variety of artists, including 3 tracks from "The Pink Floyd" (sic). It shows the band in pre-Atom Heart Mother/Meddle mode (all Floyd music for the soundtrack was recorded in Nov/Dec 1969). "Heart Beat, Big Meat" is a great mood piece along the lines of "Speak to Me"; "Crumbling Land" could have fitted nice along Meddle's "Fearless"; "Come in Number 51" is a retooled "Careful With That Axe Eugene". Jerry Garcia contributes the "Love Scene" accoustic guitar solo. Strangely there is also a 2 min. excerpt from the Dead's "Dark Star" that starts and ends with no rhyme or reason and begs the question: why? (Deadheads know what I mean). DISC 2 is completely new. It is divided up between 4 Jerry Garcia tracks (more accoustic "noodling"), and 4 Pink Floyd tracks. The latter are fascinating, and what makes this reissue so good. "Country Song" is another one of those classic early-Floyd ballads; "Unknown Song" (a/k/a "Rain in the Country" on bootlegs) is a great instrumental with many undertones. "Love Scene Version 6" is Pink Floyd doing the blues. "Love Scene Version 4" is Rick Wright in piano solo (even if credited to the entire band).

DISC 1:

01. Heart Beat, Pig Meat - Pink Floyd
02. Brother Mary - Kaleidoscope
03. Dark Star (EXCERPT) - Grateful Dead
04. Crumbling Land - Pink Floyd
05. Tennessee Waltz - Patti Page
06. Sugar Babe - The Youngbloods
07. Love Scene - Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead)
08. I Wish I Was a Single Girl Again - Roscoe Holcomb
09. Mickey's Tune - Kaleidoscope
10. Dance of Death - John Fehey
11. Come in Number 51, Your Time Is Up - Pink Floyd

DISC 2: - BONUS

JERRY GARCIA:
01. Love Scene Improvisations - Version 1
02. Love Scene Improvisations - Version 2
03. Love Scene Improvisations - Version 3
04. Love Scene Improvisations - Version 4
PINK FLOYD:
05. Country Song
06. Unknown Song
07. Love Scene - Version 6
08. Love Scene - Version 4

JOAN ARMATRADING IN 70s

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Joan Armatrading was born in Basseterre, Saint Kitts; she moved with her family to Birmingham, England in 1958. Her first job was working at Rabone Chesterman (makers of fine engineering tools), in Hockley, Birmingham. She was sacked from this job because she insisted on bringing her guitar to work, and playing during tea breaks. In the early 1970s, she moved to London to perform in a repertory production of Hair. There she met Pam Nestor, with whom she began writing songs. They worked together on the album Whatever's for Us, released on the Cube label in 1972. Cube, however, considered Armatrading to be the more likely star material and the album was credited to her alone. These events produced a tension which broke up this musical partnership. A period of inactivity for Armatrading followed, while she extracted herself from her contract with Cube Records. It was only in 1975 that she was free to sign for A&M, and issued Back to the Night, which was promoted on tour with a six-piece jazz-pop group called The Movies. Joan credited up and coming UK singer Elkie Brooks on the sleeve notes as she had cooked for Joan and the band in the studio while making the album, which was produced by Elkie's then husband Pete Gage. A major publicity relaunch in 1976 and the involvement of producer Glyn Johns propelled her next album, Joan Armatrading, into one of the top best sellers of the year, and spawned the hit single Love and Affection. The album mixed acoustic work with jazz-influenced material, and this style was retained for the 1977 follow-up Show Some Emotion, which was also produced by Glyn Johns as was 1978's To the Limit. These albums included songs which continue to be staples of Armatrading's live shows, including "Willow", "Down to Zero" and "Kissin' and a Huggin". A live album titled Steppin' Out in 1979 showcased her well-honed stage act.
