DAVE MASON & CASS ELLIOT - Dave Mason & Cass Elliot (1971)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Ostensibly a Dave Mason solo album, this is one of his finest. Coupling him with Cass Elliot, however, was a stroke of genius. Elliot's involvement is, while not suspect, somewhat limited. Although she provides excellent background vocals, she tends to get a little lost in the harmony stack. Never the less, this is a great moment for her too. The album, though, is propelled by Mason's awesome songwriting talents, and tracks such as "On and On," "Walk to the Point," and several others bear this out. His guitar playing is some of his finest recorded work, especially the epic "Glittering Facade," where he layers acoustic and electric guitars to a scintillating effect. Elliot's "Here We Go Again" showcases her ability as a great lead vocalist. Paul Harris provides some excellent keyboard and string arrangements, providing a glimpse of fine work that was to follow in Stephen Stills' Manassas. Overall, this was a highly underrated album, but in the end, it is also one of the finest from the 1970s.

ERIC BURDON & WAR - The Black-Man's Burdon (1971)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Former Animals lead singer Eric Burdon resurfaced in 1970 fronting a mostly black group named War. Their debut album actually cracked the pop Top 20, but by the time this follow-up was issued seven months later, the novelty had worn thin, and Burdon and the group would soon part company. It was a two-record set, with the most distinguishing feature being its front and back cover art.

RAINBOW - Pot Of Gold (2002)

Hot on the heels of the Universal Masters CD we have yet another collection of Rainbow's finest moments. Apart from the 90's version of the band we get all line-ups featured here, the pick being the Dio-fronted material, not least because of the rather strange -if different- choices of tracks from the Bonnet and Turner eras. If you're just getting into the band, this is a good a starting point as any, otherwise one to hold out for until bargain bin status is achieved!

JOHN PAUL JONES - The Thunderthief (2001)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

As in his previous solo album, The Thunderthief makes it very clear exactly what John Paul Jones brought to Led Zeppelin: driving bass, epic compositions, and impeccable musicianship. It's also very clear what he wasn't doing for Zeppelin: writing the lyrics. The tracks with words on the album are awkward and occasionally laughable, particularly the title track, which sounds suspiciously like a jab at Robert Plant, and "Angry Angry," a presumably mock punk song. Both detract from what is otherwise a very impressive album. Jones plays nearly every instrument on the record and mixes sounds from seemingly every continent and era he could think of. The Thunderthief's best moments are its surprises, like "Down to the River to Pray," a beautiful rendition of the bluegrass standard, and "Hoediddle," which starts off a classic rock jam and works its way into an Irish jig. On "Freedom Song," Jones mixes Eastern sounds in with Western philosophy and somehow makes its work. At the very least, The Thunderthief is evidence that Jones continues to experiment and brave new territory -- encouraging news from a man who could just rest on the greatest of laurels.

AMERICA - History: America's Greatest Hits (1975)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

To their detractors, they were Crosby, Still, Nash and Young Lite, but nonetheless, this premature career retrospective of soft-rock icons America holds up extremely well against most pop records of the early to mid-'70s. In part, that's due to ex-Beatles producer George Martin, whose considerable studio expertise nudged country-ish tunes like "Sister Golden Hair" as close to power pop as they were feasibly going to get. But the fact is that America had a genuine knack for crafting catchy, radio-ready singles, and this album offers just about all of them, including the Neil Young-esque "Horse With No Name," and the genuinely lovely "Ventura Highway."

HUMBLE PIE - Natural Born Bugie: The Immediate Anthology (2000)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

NATURAL BORN BOOGIE is a re-sequenced version of Humble Pie's first two albums, SAFE AS YESTERDAY IS and TOWN AND COUNTRY, neither of which got much exposure in America. Success would come later, with the live album PERFORMANCE--ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE, in 1971. The two albums were showcases for co-founders Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton, both refugees from teeny-bop bands whose relief at finally being able to play their own way initially masked the fact that their styles--Marriott the rowdy blues rocker, Frampton more introspective, with a penchant for acoustic instruments--were rather less compatible than they realised. As a result, the first album is heavy on Marriott's heavy guitar army approach, whereas the second, as its title suggests, has more of a Frampton-influenced pastoral quality.

HEART - Jupiters Darling (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

The 18 tracks that make up 2004's JUPITER'S DARLING are rife with rock-solid writing, passionate vocals, and seasoned musicianship. With help from the overflowing well of Seattle talent (including guest guitarists Mike McCready of Pearl Jam and Jerry Cantrell, formerly of Alice in Chains), the group includes rock bass veteran Mike Inez (Ozzy Osbourne, Alice in Chains). Love lost, and better left behind, is the prevailing theme strung across "Make Me," "Perfect Goodbye," and the heavy-grooving "Move On." "Oldest Story in the World" aims a pointed finger at the media, while "Vainglorious" shoots an arrow at its self-obsessed target. A Zeppelinesque spirit is channeled through "Things," "Enough," and the homesick "Led to One." Strangely familiar and yet distinctly of its time, JUPITER'S DARLING is a welcome return, sure to please both old and new Heart fans.

DON HENLEY - Building The Perfect Beast (1984)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

After experimenting with synthesizers and a pop sound on his solo debut, Don Henley hits the mark on his sophomore release, Building the Perfect Beast. This album established Henley as an artist in his own right after many successful years with the Eagles, as it spawned numerous hits. While the songs seem crafted for pop radio, it's hard to fault him for choosing arrangements that would get his messages to the masses. Unlike most pop in the 1980s, however, Henley had deep intellectual themes layered beneath the synthesizer sounds and crisp production. In the opening song "Boys of Summer," he talks about trying to recapture the past while knowing that things will never be the same. Henley has a gift for writing about the heart and soul of America and for mixing his love for the country and small-town life ("Sunset Grill") with cynicism about government ("All She Wants to Do Is Dance") and modernization ("Month of Sundays"). Although the politics and the sound of the album make the decade of release easy to place, Henley's earnest delivery and universal messages give many of the tracks a timeless feel, which is no small feat. This is Henley's most consistent album, and it is the place to start for those wanting to sample his solo work.

BADFINGER

Badfinger was a rock/pop band formed in Swansea, Wales in the early 1960s and is one of the earliest representatives of the power pop genre. During the early 1970s the band was touted as the heir apparent to The Beatles, partly because of their close working relationship with the 'Fab Four' but also because of their similar sound. However, it was the meteoric rise and harrowing demise of Badfinger that cemented their name in rock history journals. Although poised to make a significant impact on the music scene of the 1970s, starting it out with four hit singles and a number-one Billboard composition, Badfinger became victim to the worst elements of the music industry; resulting in bankruptcy and two suicides.

Badfinger: Pete Ham (vocals, guitar, piano); Joey Molland (vocals, guitar); Tom Evans (vocals, bass instrument); Mike Gibbins (drums).

No Dice (1970)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Discovered by Paul McCartney and signed to the Beatles' Apple Records, Badfinger was, for many fans, the next best thing to the Fab Four. But even if the band did start as a Beatles wannabe, it eventually forged a successful power-pop style of its own. NO DICE, Badfinger's second album, exhibits a confident band with strong, melodic pop songs and a diminishing Beatles influence. Bandleader Pete Ham, with his distinctively tense vocals and guitar lines, carries the band through well-constructed melodies, well-conceived harmonies, and edgy instrumentals. The track list includes a few genuine killers. "No Matter What," a compact gem that recalls the melodic innocence of the early Beatles, may be the band's apex. "Without You" is the band's original version of a quirky power ballad that Harry Nilsson would soon turn into a pop smash. The five extra tracks included with this reissue offer a variety of treats. The fiery "Get Down" displays a hard, bluesy edge and searing lead guitar, while "Friends Are Hard to Find" is all tight, gentle harmonies. These are welcome additions to Badfinger's great, underrated catalog.

Straight Up (1972)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

STRAIGHT UP is Badfinger's best-known album and perhaps the definitive example of their sparkling brand of Beatles-influenced pop. Expertly produced by George Harrison and Todd Rundgren, this 1972 album spawned two hit singles (both written by group leader Pete Ham): the romantic ballad "Day After Day" (Badfinger's only gold record) and "Baby Blue," a soaring power pop classic that is still regularly played on rock radio. Most people remember Badfinger for those two songs, but the 10 other tracks on STRAIGHT UP are equally impressive.

ERIC CLAPTON - Turn Up Down (1980)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 256
Unreleased Studio Album!

"Eric had recruited Gary Brooker as unofficial musical director for the group, and immediately set about recording his new album. The sessions produced some fairly uninspired results. It is difficult to pinpoint blame; maybe it was Eric being lazy, maybe it was the band being too laid back, or perhaps Glyn Johns in his role as producer was not assertive enough. Whatever the reason, the album was finished and mastered and cassette copies were sent around to various RSO executives. It was to be called Turn Up Down, but all concerned decided it was not good enough to release." - From Marc Roberty’s “The Complete Recording Sessions”

ARC ANGELS - Arc Angels (1992)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR
thumbupthumbupthumbup

There are one-hit wonders throughout the history of music, but very few one-album wonders like the Arc Angels. After the death of blues-rock guitar hero Stevie Ray Vaughan, fellow singing guitarists, Texans, and Vaughan devotees Doyle Bramhall II and Charlie Sexton formed the quartet with Vaughan's rhythm section of bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton. Their 1992 debut release would also be their swan song, but the self-titled album would prove to be one of the best rock/pop/blues recordings of the decade as well. The opening "Living in a Dream" is the only tune Sexton and Bramhall II co-composed, and is perhaps the closest that the Arc Angels come to re-creating Vaughan's signature sound. "Paradise Cafe" is one of a handful of tracks Sexton co-wrote with pop composer Tonio K., but he and Bramhall II engage in some ZZ Top-like call-and-response vocals, and Bramhall II's Vaughan dedication, "Sent by Angels," features some of the album's most impassioned singing. Funky tunes like "Sweet Nadine," "Good Time," and "Carry Me On" lighten the mood, and Shannon, Layton, and guest keyboardist Ian McLagan play brilliantly throughout in setting up the singing guitarists. The spirit of Vaughan permeates the recording, from the production of Little Steven to the liner notes, yet never sounds forced, purposeful, or contrived. Alas, the final two songs -- the rocking "Shape I'm In" and epic "Too Many Ways to Fall" -- sport titles that point toward the Arc Angels being a Vaughan-like comet rather than a future veteran group. Sexton's solo recording career had started as a teenager; Bramhall II and his father Doyle Bramhall were friends of Vaughan's (the elder Bramhall even composing and co-composing tunes with the guitar giant). But the two frontmen who complemented each other so well nonetheless couldn't blend their egos as easily. Arc Angels stands as testimony that a band needn't have a long career to have a lasting legacy.

RAY MANZAREK - The Golden Scarab (1974)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

More than Full Circle and Other Voices, The Golden Scarab is the best embodiment of the Doors by one of the three surviving members, and it is amazing it wasn't a huge underground smash. With mentions of moonlight drives, tightrope rides, and titles of past Doors tunes in "The Solar Boat," drummer Tony Williams, guitarist Larry Carlton, bassist Jerry Scheff, and producer Bruce Botnick generate an eerie sound behind the singer, creating a title track as mysterious and fun as anything by Morrison and company. With intense rhythms and tons of creativity, Ray Manzarek brings us on a musical journey as unique as The Phantom's Divine Comedy, and if Robbie Krieger brought the commercial element to the Doors' gravy train, it is clear here that the eldest of the quartet had more a hand in the development of the Doors persona than he may have been given credit for.

THE BROUGHT LOW - Right On Time (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
thumbup

Brooklyn-based trio the Brought Low delivers a straight-ahead hard-rock sound that finds its roots in the 1970s tradition of Aerosmith, AC/DC, UFO, and Foghat. Frontman Benjamin Howard Smith's chewed, nasal vocals and meaty guitar sound still lead the way on the band's 2006 sophomore release, RIGHT ON TIME, which features a set of fine tunes that boogie and sway both mean and heavy. Though it's certainly not going to break any new ground, this sort of amped-up, blues-based rock never seems to go out of fashion. In fact, in an age of hyper-produced corporate rock and flash-in-the-pan indie trends, the Brought Low's vintage sound is a welcome relief.

CHRIS FLORY WITH DUKE ROBILLARD & FRIENDS
- Blues In My Heart (2003)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Celebrated jazz guitarist Chris Flory (formerly of the Scott Hamilton Quartet and longtime associate of pianist Judy Carmichael) is joined for his fifth album as a leader by members of the New England jump blues aristocracy: guitarist Duke Robillard (who produced the album and sings on its closing track), Roomful of Blues vocalist Sugar Ray Norcia, bassist Marty Ballou, and drummer Chuck Riggs. Flory's former boss, Scott Hamilton, sits in on two track as well. The result is a program of small-ensemble swing that comes across as genuinely joyful, but maybe just a bit too gentle. Flory's tone is warm and soft, and Robillard seems to be holding back just a bit in response. The rhythm section keeps things moving along nicely but doesn't drive the proceedings as hard as they perhaps should have. But that's not to say that the album isn't thoroughly lovely and genuinely enjoyable -- the group's rendition of "Shine" offers a perfect balance between light virtuosity and inexorable swing, Flory's graceful, tripping solos on "Bernie's Tune" are especially impressive, and Norcia's vocal appearances are all highlights on the program. It's just that if the players had let loose a bit more, this album could have been a real blast. As it is, it's just thoroughly lovely and genuinely enjoyable.

ROGER WATERS - In The Flesh (2000)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

It's nothing short of remarkable that Roger Waters has built a successful career on obsessive ruminations on alienation, megalomania, and guilty fame, largely on the backs of one of history's most long-lived arena acts. The musical legacy Waters has shared with "another band" (as he sharply refers to his former Pink Floyd mates in this collection's self-penned liner notes) has served two distinctly different functions: part and parcel of the latter's nostalgia act; autobiographical foundation for the former's ongoing, if decidedly egocentric, Rage at the World. That's essentially the rationale this live collection uses to lean heavily on Waters's Pink prime, from Dark Side of the Moon through The Final Cut. And if that frame sometimes overshadows the images of Waters's solo work--well, no one said he wasn't a pragmatic entertainer. Still, his cynical eye insures the juxtapositions work well; the Falkland-conflicted Britain of The Final Cut's "Get Your Filthy Hands off My Desert" and "Southampton Dock" is neatly bookended by Amused to Death's "Bravery of Being out of Range." There's a telling musical contrast with Floyd here, too, and it's one that goes beyond the album's stellar recording techniques. Waters's ensemble breathes new life into even the coldest of the Floydian dirges, while giving the hoary psychedelic romp "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" a welcome R&B groove. Waters concludes by offering up the previously unrecorded "Each Small Candle"--and an equally unexpected ray of hope.

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS - Brighter Than Creation's Dark (2008)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

DBT's brand new album is a Southern gothic rock n' roll masterpiece with 19 songs adding up to over 75 minutes of pure rock n roll. The band continues its notorious 3-guitar attack with the promotion of longtime sidekick John Neff to full member. Patterson Hood contributes 9 songs to the album (The Righteous Path, Daddy Needs A Drink), 7 songs from Mike Cooley (A Ghost To Most, Lisa's Birthday) and 3 songs from Shonna Tucker (The Purgatory Line). This it the first time Shonna has written the songs for a DBT album. All this is enhanced with musical contributions from he legendary Spooner Oldham. As Patterson Hood says about the songs on the album, Stylistically, they run the gamut from old-timey sounding country to a heavy R&B influence. Some songs that are quieter than any we've ever recorded and some that rock harder than anything we've ever done. In the end it's still all Rock and Roll (which is why that will always be the description of choice to us when describing our music in stylistic terms). Drive-By Truckers are one of the most unique recording artists and live bands in popular music today. The Truckers write about people, places and situations like no one else, and have build an amazing worldwide audience in the process.

IKE TURNER AND HIS KINGS OF RHYTHM -
Rhythm Rockin' Blues (1995)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 256

Master of the blues/funky rock era. Features "Rocket 88" - the first ever rock and roll song. "Rocket 88" is a rhythm and blues song that was first recorded at Sam Phillips' recording studio in Memphis, Tennessee, on 3 or 5 March (accounts differ) 1951. It is claimed by some, including Phillips — later to become owner of Sun Records, and pioneer rock and roll record producer — to be the "first rock and roll song". The original version of the 12-bar blues song was credited to "Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats," but that band did not actually exist. The song was put together by Ike Turner and his band in rehearsals at the Riverside Hotel in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and recorded by Turner's Kings of Rhythm. Jackie Brenston (1930-1979) was a saxophonist with Turner who also sang the vocal on "Rocket 88," a hymn of praise to the joys of the Oldsmobile "Rocket 88" automobile.

JIMMY BOWSKILL

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Jimmy Bowskill just seems to fit the script of a modern day artist destined to play the blues. He burst onto the scene on BB King’s birthday of all times ... Sept. 16, 1990. Inspired by the late, great Robert Johnson, Jimmy taught himself to play and sing by interpreting by sight and sound but in his own natural style. At the tender age of 11, Jimmy was invited to join Jeff Healey onstage. A star was born, and the rest is history.

“This boy has everything it takes. Oh Lord, no kidding, the voice he’s got and the way he plays, he’s already there. I’ve never seen a kid like this sing like this before. That’s the truth!” – Mr. Hubert Sumlin

DIRE STRAITS - Brothers In Arms (1985)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us FLAC

Propelled by Mark Knopfler's literate songs, gruff vocals, and spidery guitar work, Dire Straits had overcome initial skepticism for their resistance to '70s new wave accents in favor of a rootsy traditionalism. This 1985 album captures the band consolidating a far more epic style than the concise shuffles and ballads that the original scrappy quartet had reeled off, their ambitions fueled by the larger canvas afforded by the CD. One of the first albums to exploit the format's longer playing time, Brothers in Arms was initially released in separate versions for CD/cassette and edited LP, and the band became digital poster boys on a world tour sponsored by CD hardware interests. Critics that had once warmed to the band sniffed at the marketing, but the album remains their best known, noteworthy for the MTV staple "Money for Nothing" and the breezy rock shuffle "Walk of Life," as well as for the wistful "So Far Away," the plot-driven narratives of "Ride Across the River," and the title song.

PAT TRAVERS - Blues Tracks (1992)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Legendary guitarist Pat Traver's "Blues Tracks" is a potent collection of classy tunes originally recorded by legends such as Willie Dixon, Ray Charles, and Johnny Winter. From super shuffles to slow blues, all are set apart from others by Traver?s gutsy approach. Guesting on "Statesboro Blues" is the fret wizard Michael Lee Firkins, while Little John Chrisley adds a mean harmonica solo to "I Can't Quit You " and "Mystery Train". Blues Tracks - the first of a long string of muscular blues releases by Travers, who puts his flair and flavor to these great songs.

MARIA MULDAUR - Heart Of Mine (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

As a former habitué of the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene, the singer Maria Muldaur has more of a right than most to be performing a Bob Dylan covers album. This set of well-chosen and imaginatively arranged versions, released in 2006, of some of Dylan's best love songs proves Muldaur's mastery of both sultry after-hours pieces like the swaying "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and the come-hither "Lay Baby Lay" (originally, of course,"Lay Lady Lay"), as well as Dylan's less literal expressions of romance, such as "The Golden Loom", an obscurity filled with interwoven religious, pagan, and sexual imagery.

DEEP PURPLE - Stormbringer (1974)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us FLAC

STORMBRINGER, the 1974 album from Deep Purple, features lead vocalist David Coverdale and bassist Glenn Hughes in this edition of the hard rock band's revolving lineup. On this album, the soul and funk elements that were only hinted at on Burn are much more prominent. This shift in direction alienated some fans as well as Ritchie Blackmore, who departed the band not long after Stormbringer was released. Many fans consider Stormbringer to be a major turning point in the band, and the mark of an era's end.

Derek Trucks is an American guitarist, bandleader (The Derek Trucks Band), and member of The Allman Brothers Band. The Derek Trucks Band was formed in 1994, and has been one of Trucks' primary musical outlets ever since. In 1999, Trucks joined his uncle, drummer Butch Trucks, as a member of The Allman Brothers Band, after years of performing as a guest of the band at live performances (he has continued his own band as well). With the Allmans, Trucks has performed on three live releases, which include the latinum - certified Live at the Beacon Theatre DVD, as well as the studio album Hittin' The Note (2003). He has also performed with the band during eight summer tours and the band's annual multiple night stand at New York City's Beacon Theatre.

"Songlines" is the sixth album by American guitar phenomenon Derek Trucks and his group. ROBERT PLANT - Nine Lives (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The title of this bonus-track-rich, 9-disc chronicle of Robert Plant's post-Led Zeppelin career refers not only to the number of solo albums the singer has released since Zep flamed out in 1980, but also his penchant for stubborn endurance and artistic reinvention in the face of time and the tides of fashion. While both Plant and Jimmy Page have never been able to fully escape the lengthy shadows of their original world-beating collaboration, it's the vocalist who's best--if irregularly--tempered, teased, and folded Zep's legacy into his mercurial solo career, with his 1982 debut Pictures at Eleven and 1988's Now & Zen being the most overt about it. More crucial to Plant's restless muse has been a willingness to move beyond Led Zeppelin, whether successfully casting a more structured set of songs in synth-drenched new wave veneer on "Principle of Moments" (supplemented here by the previously unreleased "Turnaround" and three live cuts, including an unlikely cover of Bob Marley's "Lively Up Yourself"), revisiting a wide swath of influential roots on the Honeydrippers EP and his first release with contemporary backing band Strange Sensation on 2002's Dreamland, or the symphonic ambitions of Manic Nirvana and multihued folk retrenchment of Fate of Nations.

THE NEVILLE BROTHERS - Yellow Moon (1989)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

The Neville Brothers, an R&B, Soul and Jazz group, was formed in 1976 in New Orleans, LA.

Yellow Moon is a 1989 album by The Neville Brothers. It features their biggest hit "Yellow Moon". The Neville Brothers made a bid for pop/rock stardom with this well-produced album for A&M, their first under a new pact with the label inked in the late '80s. It was certainly as solid as any they cut for A&M; the vocals were both nicely arranged and expertly performed, the arrangements were basically solid, and the selections were intelligently picked and sequenced. The album charted and remained there for many weeks, while the Nevilles toured and generated lots of interest. It didn't become a hit, but it did respectably and represents perhaps their finest overall pop LP.

01. My Blood
02. Yellow Moon
03. Fire and Brimstone
04. A Change Is Gonna Come

HUMBLE PIE - Town And Country (1969)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

"Town And Country" is rock outfit Humble Pie's second studio album released in 1969. Town And Country finds the band in a more acoustic mood than previously, with all four band members contributing to the songs, and Peter Frampton playing more acoustic guitar as Steve Marriott played more keyboards. It also featured a cover of the classic Buddy Holly song "Heartbeat" and the notable Marriott composition "Every Mother's Son". It was after this album that Humble Pie forged their trademark sound of heavy guitar rock and would continue in that similar vein until 1975 when they disbanded.

ROBBEN FORD - Truth (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

The blues will never die is an axiom proven over and over again, but it does change shape. Robben Ford’s latest Concord Records release, “Truth” presents blues as they are today: in a powerful setting only a master veteran like Ford could envision. “The blues have always been socio-political,” says Ford. In the opening song “Lateral Climb,” he addresses the 9 to 5 grind, credit card debt, and the political frustrations we all experience. “Peace on My Mind” was inspired by Willie Dixon’s “It Don’t Make Sense, You Can’t Make Peace,” which Ford describes as an anti-war song without being too preachy. “If you’re pointing the finger, no one wants to hear it. It’s a portrait rather than a sermon. The truths I describe are self evident.” In this set, Ford also incorporates playful tunes, like “You’re Gonna Need a Friend”, co-written by his wife and singer Anne Kerry Ford. In it, Ford subverts blues clichés, such as the evil lady who bedevils her victim. Other tracks on the CD include a funky cover of Paul Simon’s “One Man’s Ceiling Is Another Man’s Floor,” which features guest vocals by Susan Tedeschi, as well as loyal version of Otis Redding’s early B-Side, “Nobody’s Fault But Mine.”

JERRY LEE LEWIS - The Definitive Collection (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Culling 24 classics from 1957 to 1981, THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION is one of the finest single-disc Jerry Lee Lewis compilations available. Beginning with Lewis's raucous landmark singles for Sun Records ("Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On," "Great Balls of Fire"), this release also touches on his oft-underrated late-'60s comeback as a lovelorn country crooner ("Don't Let Me Cross Over," "She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye"), and includes other latter-day tracks, most notably an inventive, world-weary take on the standard "Over the Rainbow." Although the set skimps a bit on the Killer's Sun heyday, it offers a well-selected sampling of his '60s and '70s recordings, providing an excellent, if not complete, overview of Lewis's remarkably productive career.
