THE JAMES GANG - 15 Greatest Hits (1973)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

The James Gang were originally a power-trio in the tradition of Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, that was formed at Kent State University. Not until they acquired Joe Walsh on guitar and vocals though, and later Dale Peters on bass did the band really come into its own. With a young Walsh at the helm, they quickly became a well- respected outfit. Playing music in the same vein as their contemporaries of the time, the James Gang pounded out some great rockers that are still in heavy rotation across classic rock playlists even today. The definitive lineup included Joe Walsh on guitar and vocals, the band's founder and drummer was Jim Fox, and on bass was Dale Peters.

THE BEATLES - Hate (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

The most expected release since the Black Album. After being asked by the remaining Beatles to make experimental remixes from their master tapes, Sir George Master Five and the former drummer Pete Best Zarustica spent 7 entire days planning this record, that for the first time in the fab-four history expresses HATE for the war, for the USA, and for everyone that supports this stupid act. The results are fantastic. Picture B-Movies soundtracks with Bristol's nightlife. Sound textures that have never been heard before, noise, and unique breakbeats. This is HATE, an album to despise.

Argent were an English rock band founded in 1969 by Rod Argent, formerly of The Zombies. The first three demos from Argent, recorded in the autumn of 1968 featured Mac MacLeod on bass. The other original members were drummer Robert Henrit and bassist Jim Rodford (later members of The Kinks) and guitarist/keyboardist Russ Ballard, who contributed to several compositions through the group's career (some of Ballard's compositions became hits when they were covered by other artists, including Rainbow and Santana). When Russ Ballard left in 1973, he was replaced by guitarist/vocalist John Verity and guitarist John Grimaldi and there followed a period of intense recording and touring until the band decided to come off the road late in 1976.

BRIAN SETZER - Rockabilly Riot! - Volume One: A Tribute to Sun Records (2005)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Since his days leading rockabilly revivalists the Stray Cats in the 1980s, Brian Setzer has been the unofficial, modern-day ambassador of '50s rock & roll. With 2005's ROCKABILLY RIOT!: VOLUME ONE, Setzer pays homage to Sun Records, the label that helped define the genre. Focusing on the years 1954 to 1957, Setzer replicates the rockabilly sound of Sun's golden era by using vintage instruments, and arrangements that include urgent acoustic guitar rhythms and rocking roadhouse piano. Here are 23 amazing rockabilly songs (some hits, some obscure gems) that helped define an era. Setzer is determined to do whatever it takes to reach as many people as possible so they too can discover the music that has gone underappreciated for too long.

B.B.KING - Love Me Tender (1982)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
Incl. back & front covers (900x900)

LOVE ME TENDER is an unusual B.B. King album, a notable departure from the urban blues he typically records. For the 1982 disc, B.B. selected songs more closely associated with country and western music. As he explains in the liner notes, the album "puts together all my roots and influences from blues to country and everywhere else." To achieve his goal, King assembled a band of Nashville studio greats, including pedal steel guitarist Sonny Garrish and guitarist Reggie Young. Also among the players are R&B/jazz saxophone great David "Fathead" Newman (whose contributions are sadly limited to a few tracks), the Muscle Shoals Horns, a large string section, and a trio of backing vocalists. Highlights include the opener "One Of Those Nights," a soulful adaptation of a Conway Twitty Song; the funky "Don't Change on Me"; "You've Always Got the Blues," one of several sweet ballads on the disc; and a medley of Willie Nelson's "Nightlife" and Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love." While the ever-present electric piano and lush orchestration on LOVE ME TENDER may not be to everyone's taste, anyone interested in hearing B.B. stretch beyond the confines of traditional blues should find plenty to enjoy on this album.

MOUNTAIN - Eruption (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Led by power-riffing guitarist Leslie West and assist/songwriter/ producer Felix Pappalardi, Mountain formed in New York City in 1969. With songs like "Mississippi Queen" and "Boys in the Band," the Woodstock alums have come to represent the fierce technique and utter heaviness (and often the unfortunate excess) of the best 1970s blues-inspired hard-rock bands. Pappalardi was tragically murdered by his wife in 1983; however, West and drummer Corky Laing continued to tour and record under the Mountain name into the 2000s.

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS - Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Nick Cave changed the sound of music as part of the seminal goth-punks The Birthday Party. With his band of 20 years, The Bad Seeds, his solo work has veered between poignant gospel-inflected ballads and the steamy thud of backwater blues and country. This double album showcases both these sides of Cave's songwriting, with The Bad Seeds rising to fine, even funky, form. "Abattoir" is more rock 'n' roll with gospel overtones and salacious grooves, while "Lyre" is rawer and more experimental with a lot of acoustic instrumentation.

THE STEVE MILLER BAND - The Best of 1968-1973 (1990)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 256
Incl. front + back cover (1024x1015)

The Best of 1968-1973 is a solid collection that features many of the highlights from Steve Miller's first five years of recording, including "The Joker," "Living in the U.S.A.," "Space Cowboy," and "Gangster of Love." This compilation isn't as consistently thrilling as Greatest Hits 1974-1978, which also features "The Joker," and it's not as sharply assembled as 1972's Anthology, but it remains an adequate overview of Miller's early records, especially for fans only familiar with Greatest Hits.

THE STEVE MILLER BAND - Greatest Hits 1974-1978 (1978)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
Incl. front + back cover (900x900)

Although Steve Miller had been rocking and rolling since the late 1960s, he experienced some of the greatest chart success of his career during the mid-1970s, as exemplified by this GREATEST HITS 1974-1978 compilation. Nearly all 14 of the album's tracks have become classic rock radio standards over the years. This period in particular saw Miller streamline his early blues rock sound into something more mainstream-friendly. With not a single weak track in the bunch, the creme de la creme would have to include the tasty rockers "Jungle Love," "Take the Money and Run," "Rock N' Me," "The Joker," "Fly Like An Eagle," and "Jet Airliner."

RAY DAVIES - Working Man's Cafe (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

2007 release of the second solo album by the founder and former frontman of The Kinks, one of the best albums of his incredible career. His first, Other People’s Lives, was a lifetime in the making, while this album happened relatively quickly. It was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee and mixed in North London at Konk Studios, featuring 12 stellar songs co-produced with Ray Kennedy. They assembled a crackerjack band of top musicians who breathed life into a wonderful collection of songs. The album is infused with a transatlantic sound befitting Ray’s close ties to the American south coupled with his well respected Englishness. From the first upbeat notes of the lead track ‘Vietnam Cowboys’, it is clear Ray has never sung better. The album presents a wistful, humorous and poignant look at life in the 21st Century, just what we have come to expect from one of Britain’s greatest songwriters. Highlights are many and include the Preservation Jazz Hall sway of ‘Morphine Song’, the painful longing of ‘Imaginary Man’ and the haunting emotion of ‘One More Time’. Brimming with variety, ‘Voodoo Walk’ is a steamy stroll on the rock side. ‘You’re Asking Me’ and ‘In A Moment’ offer incredibly affecting pop while ‘Working Man’s Café’ revisits familiar Davies territory, that yearning for an era gone by.

V.A. - From Clarksdale to Heaven: Remembering John Lee Hooker (2002)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Long before his death in 2001, bluesman John Lee Hooker had become one of the Top 10 figures in African American blues. Arguably, he might very well be among the Top 3. Accordingly, his songs and music had a profound impact on American blues, rock and roots artists. His influence bridged barriers between electric and acoustic proponents of the form. Zakiya Hooker put together a compilation album to remember her father, great John Lee Hooker. A plethora of many fine musicians make this album an indulgence for a blues/rock fan. Guests include Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, St. Louis’ own Johnnie Johnson, and Zakiya. John Lee Hooker defined a generation of blues music for his boogies and brilliant guitar playing. Though nothing can beat the real thing the track list below proves that Hooker has been an inspiration to many and still continues to be to this day. JOHN LEE HOOKER - Jealous (1986)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR
2007 REMASTER!

Hooker was already being hailed as a living legend in the '60s, but by the time of this 1986 release he was a larger-than-life figure, his iconic stature unquestioned. From his earliest collaborations with Canned Heat and on through the '70s and '80s, the rock world never got tired of trying to endear Hooker to a crossover audience. JEALOUS is an attempt to adapt Hooker's lonesome blues to full-band arrangements. Unlike his band recordings of the '50s, though, there's a decided rock edge to his accompaniment here, providing a sharp contrast to the down-home, earthy sound of Hooker's voice and guitar. Organ, electric guitar, and a forceful rhythm section baked in reverb back Hooker on JEALOUS. Instead of overpowering Hooker, though, these new arrangements place the bluesman on a sonic pedestal, from which he sounds like the voice of God dispensing wisdom through the blues.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Melissa Etheridge became one of the most popular recording artists of the '90s due to her mixture of confessional lyrics, pop-based folk-rock, and raspy, Janis Joplin/Rod Stewart-esque vocals. As one of the most prominent women in rock, Melissa Etheridge has blazed a striking path through the genre with her soulful, gritty voice and formidable guitar playing. In 1993, Etheridge took the bold step of coming out as a lesbian, and, in 2004, she showed even more tenacity by successfully battling breast cancer. She is an Academy Award-winning and two-time Grammy Award-winning American rock musician and singer. In 2001 she won the Gibson Guitar Award for Best Rock Guitarist: Female.

COWBOY JUNKIES - Trinity Revisited (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

A special set in honour of the 20th anniversary of the release of the seminal Trinity Session CD. This re-interpretation of the Cowboy Junkies' seminal original 'Trinity Session' from 1988 features guests such as Ryan Adams and Vic Chesnutt. A full twenty years on from the original date of recording, the band's sibling mainstays revisited the same church in which the original was captured and decided to experiment with its familiar formats. The result is 'Trinity Revisited' which, although maintaining the same track listing, has a slightly different feel. The spontaneous jam-like aspects remain, but they are given a different personality by the contributions from Adams and Chesnutt, among others.

The album was recorded at Toronto, Ontario's Church of the Holy Trinity on November 27, 1987. The album includes a mixture of original material by the band and covers of classic pop, rock and country songs, including the band's most famous single, a cover of The Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane", based on the early version found on 1969: The Velvet Underground Live, rather than the well-known studio version from Loaded. Also included is "Blue Moon Revisited (Song for Elvis)", which is both a cover and an original, combining a new song by the band with the pop standard "Blue Moon".

SANTANA - Ultimate (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Carlos Santana is one of those rare guitarists whose sound is instantly recognizable. His fiery, soulful blend of rock, blues, and Latin music made his band, also named Santana, an international success. From 1960s San Francisco psychedelia to '70s fusion to enormously successful pop crossovers in the early 2000s, Carlos Santana has remained a respected and influential force in music. Though he scored hits with his band from the late '60s to the early '80s, Santana operated under the mainstream radar for much of the '80s and '90s until the multi-platinum 1999 "comeback" album, SUPERNATURAL, studded with pop-star collaborations, brought him (and the band) a whole new audience.

ALISON MOYET - The Turn (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Alison Moyet is an English pop singer/songwriter noted for her bluesy voice. Her mainstream pop career began in 1981 when she formed the electropop duo Yazoo with former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke. In the United States, the band became known as Yaz, as there was a record label in the region already operating as Yazoo Records that presented copyright issues. Yazoo had several hits, including "Only You", "Don't Go", "Situation" and "Nobody's Diary", and recorded two albums, Upstairs At Eric's and You And Me Both. The group was notable for melding Clarke's trademark electronic sounds with Moyet's warm, soulful voice.

"The Turn" is Alison Moyet's first album of original recordings in five years. It is a work of surprising variety and exceptional depth - drawn together by her remarkable voice - and is destined to take her career to even greater heights. Never before has Moyet seemed as assured and at ease with her talents as on THE TURN. This surely marks a new chapter in the career of an artist who has captivated us for 25 years, selling in excess of 20 million albums.

CHARLIE DANIELS BAND - Deuces (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

While the bevy of big names sests the respect Daniels gets across genre lines throughout the music industry, DEUCES is hardly a retrospective tribute, and it kicks up as much dust as any release in his catalog. He digs nto the Carter-Cash classic "Jackson" with Gretchen Wilson, rips through perhaps the best cover version of Dylan's "Maggie's Farm" ever (with Earl, Gary, and Randy Scr), and refuses that gentle goodnight hand in hand with Brenda Lee on "Let It Be Me." Add Darius Rucker, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, Brooks & Dunn, and many others to the list of conspirators. DEUCES is a great late addition to the Daniels catalog and speaks to his legacy as one of the finest sidemen in the nebulous genre where rock & roll, rhythm & blues, and country become one and the same.

BO DIDDLEY - Living Legend: The Collection (1996)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

BO DIDDLEY, pioneering African-American rock-and-roll singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He and his cousin, Gussie McDaniel, who raised him and whose last name he adopted, moved to Chicago when he was five. He studied violin, received his first guitar in 1940, and acquired the nickname “Bo Diddley” (probably from the single-stringed folk instrument called a diddley bow). Within a decade he was performing in South Side clubs, often playing a unique rectangular electric guitar. Diddley became known for his pounding signature beat (bom ba-bom bom, bom bom; later an essential component of rock music) and for his guitar effects, jive talk, and strutting onstage style. He reached a wider audience with the release (1955) of his first record, containing “Bo Diddley” and “I'm a Man.” He had a number of other hits, but is perhaps most important for his powerful influence on generations of rockers, e.g., Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, and Bruce Springsteen. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

POPA CHUBBY - Deliveries After Dark (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

After the international Success of Electric Chubbyland Popa hits hard with sheer power and raw blues rock anthems in this 13 track. Searing guitars meet melodic hooks on a thunderous backbeat. The title track (« Deliveries After Dark ») evokes shades of AC/DC while the anthemic « Let The Music Set You Free » rocks Zeppelesque with its Bonham like beat and layered guitars. The Motown like « Sally Likes To Run » is a track Popa wrote about his beloved 1971 Ford Mustang Fastback. It evokes an era of reckless abandon that is prominent throughout the record. The spacey and evocative « Woman In My Bed Dub » is straight outa Kingston and the smoke is thick as the dub mix. Popa Chubby's legacy speaks for itself and the innovative Genre Busting New Yorker has set forth to make his masterpiece. Popa Speaks from his New York Studio : " Every Artist says the same thing : This is my best record ever..... Well I ain’t gonna bullshit ya. All I can tell you is you need rock and roll in your soul and I am the man in control. The Blues are alive and well and Rock and Roll will Never Die!!! " Are You Ready To Rock!!??

DOYLE BRAMHALL - Is It News (2007)

Considering that it took Texas drummer and singer/songwriter Doyle Bramhall's 12 years to issue his debut album, 1994's Bird Nest on the Ground and that nine years passed before his sophomore effort, Fitchburg Street, dropped, his third set, arriving only four years after its predecessor, is quick work. Bramhall is a bit of a living legend in Texas music circles.

"Is It News" features 12 songs written over the course of Doyle Bramhall’s personal and musical life. “Chateau Strut,” was originally constructed in 1974 when Bramhall, Stevie Ray Vaughan and keyboardist Billy Etheridge were warming up at Club Chateau in East Texas, and “Cryin’,” written in 2005, was recorded in post-Katrina New Orleans at The Nappy Dugout & Up with Mike Napolitano.

TOM FOGERTY - Tom Fogerty (1972)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
His 1st solo album.

Tom Fogerty was the rhythm guitarist for Creedence Clearwater Revival. He was also the older brother of the group's lead singer, John Fogerty. Tom left the group in 1971 to start a solo career. In 1990 he died of respiratory failure (AIDS).

Although for a few years Tom Fogerty was in one of the most successful rock groups in the world, it was his lot to be in the huge shadow of his younger and far more talented brother, John Fogerty. Tom played rhythm guitar and sang some background vocals in Creedence Clearwater Revival, but only one of his compositions was recorded by the band. Tom was the first member of CCR to leave, splitting in early 1971 because of tensions with his brother and a wish for more freedom to sing and write his own material. Despite recording nine albums prior to his death in 1990, however, he never succeeded in either making hit records or presenting nearly as strong a musical identity as John -- or, indeed, CCR as a whole -- did.

GEORGE HARRISON - Thirty Three & 1/3 (1976)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Forsaking the introspective, spiritual themes of many of his earlier recordings, THIRTY THREE & 1/3 was perhaps Harrison's finest album since his landmark debut, ALL THINGS MUST PASS. Released in 1976, THIRTY THREE & 1/3 spawned several hit singles, including "This Song" (an upbeat rocker featuringsome jaunty organ playing by Billy Preston and a spoken word cameo from Monty Python's Eric Idle) and "Crackerbox Palace", a tuneful, mid-tempo pop song that offers a playful blend of mysticism and humor. The real highlights on THIRTY THREE & 1/3, however, are two lesser-known songs that could havecome straight off of The Beatles' ABBEY ROAD album. "Beautiful Girl" (which was actually written in 1969 as a potentialBeatles song) is a gorgeous love song that's driven by Harrison's shimmering 12-string electric guitar, while "Dear One" weaves a haunting, Indian-influenced melody with a big popchorus to create an intensely moving song of devotion.

JOHNNY "GUITAR" WATSON - 3 Hours Past Midnight (1986)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
Incl. front & back covers!

Johnny "Guitar" Watson was an American musician whose long career influenced the development of blues, soul music, rhythm & blues, funk and rock music. When ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons sings "with my New York brim and my gold tooth displayed" on "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide," he might well be describing the legendary Johnny "Guitar" Watson, whose 14-karat smile and natty, pimped-out image sometimes overshadowed his monstrous musical talent. Watson came up in the fertile Houston, Tex., music scene of the 1950s and was heavily influenced by the swinging sounds of T-Bone Walker and Gatemouth Brown. After starting out as keyboard player, guitar became his primary instrument and he earned his nickname with his dazzlingly mercurial technique. In 1960s Los Angeles, he worked as a leader as well as a sideman, often with singer Larry Williams. When Watson reemerged in the mid-1970s with his "gangster of love" persona, his new sound combined hard Funk and soulful ballads. He became hugely successful on R&B charts in the U.S. and around the world. He died on stage in Japan in 1994.

By the 1990s, the face of blues had changed immensely and this 18-track collection attempts to chronicle those changes. While old-timers like Buddy Guy, Charles Brown, and Etta James were still making new, groundbreaking music, second-liners like Billy Boy Arnold, Smokey Wilson, Willie Kent, and R.L. Burnside had moved up through the ranks to take their place in the blues firmament. Equally explosive tracks from new names like William Clarke, Rod Piazza, Larry McCray, Lucky Peterson and John primer make this a modern-day compilation well worth investigating.

TH' LEGENDARY SHACK SHAKERS - Swampblood (2007)

Th' Legendary Shack Shakers are a rock band inspired by polka, delta blues, hillbilly, and other traditional Southern music genres, formed in Nashville, Tennessee in the mid 1990's. They haven't called their fifth studio album Swampblood for nothing - there's plenty of the band's usual amped-up Dixie-core frenzy on this album, but as usual they continue to expand their musical palette with each album, and on this set the Tennessee hell-raisers have added a healthy portion of classic swamp rock to the menu.

LIQUORICE JOHN DEATH - Ain't Nothin' to Get Excited About (1997)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
Procol Harum

In 1969, after finishing A Salty Dog, organist Matthew Fisher and bassist Dave Knights decided to exit the lineup of Procol Harum. The remaining members - Gary Brooker, Robin Trower, and B.J. Wilson, in the course of reshaping the band - added Chris Copping, who played both bass and keyboards had been part of the original lineup of the Paramounts, whence the rest of Procol Harum had come. The new version of the band was still working out their sound with neophyte producer Chris Thomas and in mid-January of 1970 decided to head to Abbey Road Studios for a series of informal demo sessions, devoted to straight-ahead rock roll of the kind that they'd played as the Paramounts. The sessions, which were never intended for release but more as practice for all concerned, were jokingly credited to Liquorice John Death the All-Stars, a name once sested by Dave Mundy, a session singer and an old friend of Gary Brooker's. The 38 songs from the sessions yielded 13 tracks that Thomas mixed, six of which were released (with the blessing of the participants) by EMI 28 years later in tandem with the original Paramounts' tracks on Abbey Road Decade 1963-1970 CD. Interestingly, these sides may have been informal demos to work out the group's sound and give Thomas a chance to practice working with the band, but they did anticipate the harder rocking sound that the reconstituted Procol Harum debuted on its next album, Home.

JOHN FOGERTY - Hoodoo (1976)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
The unreleased album

Hoodoo is John Fogerty's third solo album, recorded in 1976 but never released. After the "John Fogerty" solo album, Fogerty wasted no time proceeding to record more material for a new album to be followed with a tour. In April 1976 he released a new single, You got the Magic/Evil Thing which barely made it to the charts and did not sell a great deal. After the complete failure of the single, John had offered Asylum Records his material for the album, however, shortly before shipment, the decision was made to withdraw the album. Fogerty and Joe Smith, the head of the label, together decided the album was not up to the high John Fogerty standard. Shortly afterwards, Fogerty entered into a nine year period away from the music industry. He has confirmed in numerous interviews that he had the master tapes destroyed, although bootleg copies of varying quality have leaked...

Bobbie Gentry remains one of the most interesting and underappreciated artists to emerge out of Nashville during the late '60s. Best-known for her crossover smash "Ode to Billie Joe," she was one of the first female country artists to write and produce much of her own material, forging an idiosyncratic, pop-inspired sound that, in tandem with her glamorous, bombshell image, anticipated the rise of latter-day superstars like Shania Twain and Faith Hill. She shot to international fame in the summer of 1967 with the quirky "Ode to Billie Joe", written by Gentry and sung in her warm, captivating style. Ode was listed as the most popular single of the year in many U.S. record surveys and was admired by Frank Sinatra and other singers. "The Delta Sweete" is her second album.

Robert James Ritchie better known as Kid Rock, is an American musician. After 22 million records sold in the US and a three year hiatus, Kid Rock is back with the brand new album 'Rock N Roll Jesus'. Kid Rock hustled in the Detroit underground for over ten years before he burst into the mainstream in 1999 with the timeless rock anthem "Bawitdaba." Other hits like "Cowboy" and "American Bad A**" followed while ballads like his "Picture" duet with Sheryl Crow and "Only God Knows Why" helped to propel him forward as one of the greatest artists of our time. His latest offering Rock N Roll Jesus is no exception, running the gamut from hard rock to hip-hop to country and soul. Of the album, which Rock co-produced with Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, My Chemical Romance), he says: "I am proud of every single song on this record. It works from start to finish."

Chris Norman is an English soft rock singer. Between 1975 and 1982 he was the lead singer of the successful band Smokie. In 1982 he leaves Smokie to start a solo career. He is not very succussful until 1986. The German producer Dieter Bohlen writes the song "Midnight Lady" for Chris. It reaches the number one position in Germany and top ten positions all around the world. This hit was followed by a smaller hit "Some Hearts Are Diamands", which was also a ballad written by Dieter Bohlen Two years later Chris Norman came to Hamburg to record a new single with Dieter Bohlen, called "Broken Heroes". According to Chris it was crap, but he records the song and it reaches the number 3 position in the German charts. But Dieter Bohlen is too commercially oriented for Chris and they broke up their cooperation. Afterwards Chris Norman records several albums, but without much commercial success.

THE DOORS - Live In Boston 1970 (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

LIVE IN BOSTON features two complete sets from Friday April 10, 1970 at the Boston Arena and captures the moment just before the Doors turned their mystical psych circus into a full blown blooze review. As a historical document, LIVE IN BOSTON is unflinching, presenting a decidedly warts-and-all view across 46 tracks. With Ray Manzarek's polychromatic organ, Robbie Krieger's no-frills guitar lines, and Jon Densmore's Latin-inflected percussion, the band ably follows Morrisonparty through every far-flung inspiration. The covers are many, as an epic "Light My Fire" alone touches upon "Fever," "Summertime," and "St. James Infirmary Blues" before returning to its familiar chorus. The show, of course, belongs to Morrison who seems stuck between shaman-poet and Brechtian comic instigator. Indeed one of the primary attractions of LIVE IN BOSTON is the banter. With more skits than an Outkast record - including idiotic stoner ramblings, inspired period pieces, and wry self-parodies - this set proves that even at his most bloviated, Morrison could be an inspired and often hilarious performer who knew how to push a crowd's buttons. It was worth the price of admission for Doors fans in 1970 and given the staid contemporary relationship between rock performers and audiences, it still resonates today.

R.L.BURNSIDE - A Bothered Mind (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 256

John Lennon once claimed that "the blues is a chair…the first chair," explaining the music's primacy in the grand scheme of things. That notion is richly underscored on this follow-up to late-blossoming North Mississippi bluesman R.L. Burnside's initial 1998 remix collection. While Kid Rock's rollicking duet cum roadhouse free-for-all on "My Name is Robert Too" further grounds his rootsy reinvention, Bay Area hip-hopper Lyrics Born lays a lugubrious guitar groove on "Goin' Down South" and kicks up "Someday Baby" with a word-tripping nod to Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues." But those flashy guest turns shouldn't distract from the real attraction here: Burnside's own earthy, rhythmically propulsive acoustic (the moody "Bird Without a Feather" source recording dates to 1968) and electric performances, as deftly refocused and punched up by producers Mike E. Clark and Tino Gross. Listeners familiar with Burnside's re-worked contributions to the hit Sopranos soundtrack and its follow-up will find this collection a rewarding shotgun wedding of something borrowed and something new--a smart, modern take on the blues.

ALVIN LEE - Saguitar (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Packed with bluesy vocals and dazzling guitar work, Alvin says the album "celebrates the sheer fun of making music". After decades on the road with Ten Years After and the Alvin Lee Band the guitarist now prefers to play a few festivals and concerts, between spending time in the studio. Explains Alvin: “The album reflects what I’ve been doing for the past two years, enjoying myself and making music.” Among the guest musicians on ‘Saguitar’ is keyboard player Tim Hinkley, a veteran of Alvin’s past projects and one time leader of Jody Grind. He appears on the atmospheric ‘Motel Blues, one of the highlights of this 14 track album. A surprise item is ‘Rapper’ a track built up from various drum loops. Says Alvin: “I did my own drum fills and laid some hot guitar over the top. It’s a rap song which people have said is fantastic.” "Saguitar" is named in honour of Alvin’s star sign Sagittarius and he feels the title reflects his musical personality.

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL - Platinum (2001)

Here are two CDs containing 40 tracks - all of Creedence Clearwater Revival's singles along with album cuts - selected and sequenced by European rock journalist Lennart Persson, an intimate of John Fogerty. The big pluses are that these tracks are the remastered versions (in 24 bit), the sequencing is unique and provocative, and the music itself, as you already know if you are reading this, is killer. This is arguably a better issue than the American Chronicle series because of the new dimension added by not placing tracks chronologically.
