Melissa Etheridge became one of the most popular recording artists of the '90s due to her mixture of confessional lyrics, pop-based folk-rock, and raspy, Janis Joplin/Rod Stewart-esque vocals. As one of the most prominent women in rock, Melissa Etheridge has blazed a striking path through the genre with her soulful, gritty voice and formidable guitar playing. In 1993, Etheridge took the bold step of coming out as a lesbian, and, in 2004, she showed even more tenacity by successfully battling breast cancer. She is an Academy Award-winning and two-time Grammy Award-winning American rock musician and singer. In 2001 she won the Gibson Guitar Award for Best Rock Guitarist: Female.
