JOHN FOGERTY - Revival (2007)

320

John's new album is a triumph, with a sound that is at once timeless yet urgently rooted in this time and place. The lyrics recall a continuous conversation with America, a reminder of John's unmatched ability to resonate with people from all walks of life. With a voice that can cut glass and inspire generations, and a band that sounds like it came to tear the roadhouse down, Revival is not just a great John Fogerty album - and a great rock album - it's an essential musical work by an artist without peer, that will certainly stand as one of the most compelling albums of 2007.

CHRIS & RICH ROBINSON - Brothers of a Feather (2007)

VBR

In April 2006 during a break in The Black Crowes' touring schedule that ultimately encompassed 106 band shows, Chris and Rich Robinson performed a string of their first-ever full-length acoustic duo dates - in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Austin. Billed as "Brothers Of A Feather: An Acoustic Evening with Chris & Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes," the 12 concerts - all of which sold out in minutes - earned critical acclaim and were highlighted by three shows at The Roxy in Los Angeles. At these acoustic shows, Chris and Rich reached deep into their repertoire of Black Crowes favorites and also performed new songs (the previously unreleased “Magic Rooster Blues,” “Cold Boy Smile”) plus material from their respective solo albums (Chris' ‘Someday Past The Sunset’; Rich's ‘Forgiven Song’ and ‘Leave It Alone’) and various covers.

STEVE MORSE - Major Impacts (2000)

VBR

With Major Impacts, Dixie Dregs/Kansas/Deep Purple vet Steve Morse attempts to give fans an aural portrait of the origins of his wide-ranging style. Rather than merely perform tunes associated with this guitar hero's guitar heroes, he has composed 11 tunes that reflect the styles of his influences. "Derailleur Gears" sets the tone, managing the tricky feat of evoking Cream-era Clapton without sounding like a slavish imitation. Stylists from Jimi Hendrix to Roger McGuinn to John McLaughlin are represented here, and all are readily recognizable. "TruthOla," a tribute to Jeff Beck, Eric Johnson, and Alex Lifeson, falters only in its homage to the original Beck, offering the legato leads of Johnson and the suspended chords of Lifeson, but none of the riding-the- ragged-edge surprise of the Great One. Morse's greatest success, though, is creating a collection of instrumentals that will please even nonguitarists.

V.A. - The Blues...A Real Summit Meeting (1973)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Recorded live at Newport, New York, on June 29, 1973, this album brings together performances by both big names - B.B.King, Muddy Waters - and lesser knowns (Lloyd Glenn, who serves up honky tonk piano like "Pine Tops Boogie Woogie"). Everyone gets about twelve minutes to do their thing, except for Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup and King, who are limited to one song each ("That's Alright Now Mama" and "Outside Help" respectively). The surprise star is Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, who captivates the house with tongue-in-cheek verbal boasts ("They Call Me Mr. Cleanhead") and athletic alto sax solos ("Kidney Stew"). Also captured at her best is Big Mama Thornton, who delivers crusty but vulnerable readings of the old standby "Little Red Rooster" and her signature song, "Ball And Chain." None of the performers are young, but it's not strictly a nostalgia set; Gatemouth Brown's "Please Mr. Nixon" demonstrates that the performers are grounded not just in the timeless, but in the here and now (more precisely, the there and then). The band is terrific: Jay McShann adds classy piano backing, while wildman violinist Claude Williams takes some jawdropping extended solos ("Smooth Sailing"). You could certainly argue that this set reaches too hard for variety at the expense of coherence (Crudup's unaccompanied country blues segue into Glenn's super-cool piano stylings), but there's not much else to quibble with: it showcases an impressive array of talents playing their favorite material, with no condescension or pretension.

01. Little Red Rooster - Big Mama Thornton
02. Ball and Chain - Big Mama Thornton
03. Smooth Sailing - Jay McShann

This collection of themes from the Mickey Rourke film "Homeboy" has no Clapton vocals, but some of his best film music work. The "Ruby" themes are beautiful acoustic guitar work and then Clapton and bassist Nathan East do an electric "Dixie" that is reminiscent of the famous Jimi Hendrix "Star Spangled Banner"... THE MICK FLEETWOOD BAND - Something Big (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Although Something Big will be treated as a Mick Fleetwood side project (the album is attributed to the Mick Fleetwood Band), it is very much co-producer Todd Smallwood's baby. Make no mistake about it, Fleetwood is a big part of the proceedings here with his steady and arrangement-oriented drumming, but Smallwood wrote all but one of the songs (Jackson Browne's "Looking Into You" is rendered here in a close cover, with Browne himself helping on vocals), handles the lead vocals, and plays a half dozen instruments to boot, not to mention mixing the whole thing. Smallwood's songs are carefully crafted, and his voice (which sounds like a cross between Don Henley and Mark Knopfler) continually exudes an earnest sincerity. Among the best tracks are the opener, "Bitter End," which begins as a faux blues 78 before breaking into a mid-tempo rock shuffle, and "Where the Wind Blows," which has a Dylanesque pacing and phrasing. Long time Fleetwood Mac bass player John McVie and former Mac guitarist Jeremy Spencer join in on "No Borders," a hopelessly hopeful song that takes as its central idea that in the future "the only passport will be the heart." Lauren Evans handles duet vocals with Smallwood on a couple tracks (as well as background vocals on several others), most notably on the hooky and solid "It's the Money." In the end, Something Big is competent, listenable and worth hearing, but don't expect anything that will make you forget Tusk.

DEBBIE DAVIES - Blues Blast (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

The latest offering from blues artist Debbie Davies is a mix of original and classic blues, and includes guest appearances by guitarists Tab Benoit and Coco Montoya, and mouthorgan virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite, who's played in the Waikato twice in recent times. Blues Blast showcases Davies' seasoned guitar and vocal capabilities, and the inclusion of the three high-profile bluesmen rounds off the sounds wonderfully. Davies' tribute to guitar mentor Albert Collins on the opening track A.C. Strut proves she learnt her lessons well. On Buddy Guy's classic My Time After Awhile - again with Montoya - she conjures up a fiery blues groove. The legendary Musselwhite - who has contributed to countless blues albums - does it again with his high-end blows and low-end draws on Davies' own Sittin' and Cryin' and on his own contribution, Movin' and Groovin'. Benoit joins Davies to pay homage to two legendary blues masters - John Lee Hooker on Crawling King Snake and Howlin' Wolf on Howlin', for My Darlin'.

HOT TUNA - The Best Of (1998)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

While the Grateful Dead were the undisputed kings of the "jam bands," many fans of the genre would agree that Hot Tuna would come in a close second. What began as an acoustic side project for two founding members of the Jefferson Airplane (guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady) soon blossomed into an outfit that unafraid to plug and let it rip. 1998's double-disc set, THE BEST OF, is comprised of one disc of acoustic compositions and another of electrified rock n' roll. Totaling a hefty 30 tracks in length, just about every Hot Tuna fan fave is included--"Hesitation Blues," "Winin' Boy Blues," "Hit Single #1," and "Funky #7," to name but a few. THE BEST OF serves as a splendid introduction to the jammin' Hot Tuna.

This two-disc compilation of RCA recordings, made between 1969 and 1977, traces Hot Tuna's evolution from an acoustic folk-blues group to an electric blues-rock band, and then to a near-heavy-metal ensemble, and from a repertoire dominated by covers of songs by blues guitarists like the Reverend Gary Davis to one consisting largely of original material written by guitarist/singer Jorma Kaukonen. Actually, the transitions are not that dramatic, since Kaukonen continues to favor the same kinds of guitar figures whether he's playing acoustic or electric, and his own songs, albeit with more abstract lyrics, are steeped in the traditions that produced the cover material. The compilers might have pleased Hot Tuna fans by placing more emphasis on the group's jamming abilities, including more of its live material ("Death Don't Have No Mercy" is especially missed), and saved some of the Kaukonen compositions for a "best of Jorma" album. But that is not to say that the compilation isn't a balanced, representative condensation of Hot Tuna's career on RCA; it is. It's just that, like the Grateful Dead's, Hot Tuna's studio albums didn't necessarily reflect the best of the group as a performing unit. Note that the set includes a rare studio version of "Been So Long" originally released as a single and a previously unreleased 1977 live version of "Rock Me Baby."

GARY PRIMICH

Harmonica player Gary Primich, whose soulful and proficient playing developed a strong following among blues fans in the United States and Europe, has died at age 49. Not only is this the loss of a world-class talent, but also of a true world-class person. Offstage, Gary was a caring and gentle soul — a real Regular Joe of the best kind. Onstage he played with a ferocity and indescribable sound that was often mind-blowing. He'd say Thank You to his fans then quickly change the subject because he didn't want it to be all about him. He loved animals, he loved people, he loved music and he loved life. Gary's career sent him around the world, traveling thousands and thousands of miles for his love of music, but he'll always be right here, in our hearts.

SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS - I Shake My Stick At You (1991)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

For many, when you think of early rock & roll, certain images and sounds immediately come to mind - Chuck Berry strumming his red Gibson while duck-walking, a sweaty Little Richard wailing into the mike, Jerry Lee Lewis bashing the piano, etc. But what's often forgotten is that in rock's dawning moments, horns played a big part in the then-new genre's sound. And Screamin' Jay Hawkins was one of rock's early artists to embrace blaring saxophones - as well as theatrics. As evidenced by the 1994 release I Shake My Stick at You, Hawkins was rockin' and hollerin' till the very end. Although it's a studio effort (recorded while Hawkins was on tour in Australia a year before the album's release), I Shake My Stick at You manages to capture the energy and looseness of a live gig - in fact, with the addition of audience cheering, you could be fooled into believing it's a concert recording. Hawkins is at the top of his game on such highlights as the album-opening "Live Love or Die," "Because of You," and the X-rated "Furburger." If you're interested in digging a bit deeper into Hawkins' catalog beyond just "I Put a Spell on You" and perhaps a hits set, I Shake My Stick at You is certainly one of his stronger studio releases (which is quite an accomplishment, considering it appeared this late in Hawkins' career).

CREAM - Wheels Of Fire (1968)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

When Cream released WHEELS OF FIRE, they had established themselves as the premier blues-rock band due to the success of their first two albums and the extraordinary chemistry between the band's members. As a result of this synergy, Cream also enjoyed a fiery live reputation. This double album represents both sides of Cream's musical personality. The first record is a studio job, where the band mixes originals with covers of Howlin' Wolf ("Sitting on Top of the World") and Albert King ("Born Under a Bad Sign"). The songs written by the band all contain unique touches. "As You Said" finds Jack Bruce swapping his bass for a cello, "Pressed Rat and Warthog" sounds like an English folk tale courtesy of Ginger Baker's clipped recitation and the inclusion of baroque horns, and the classic "White Room" overflows with waves of Eric Clapton's wah-wah-drenched guitar. The second record was recorded over a four-day span at San Francisco's Winterland and Fillmore West. Extended versions of "Toad" and Willie Dixon's "Spoonful" demonstrate the band's intricate interplay, but most impressive is a blistering reading of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads," in which all three members seem to be soloing simultaneously in a jaw-dropping display of fury and bravado.

Cream:

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS - Murder Ballads (1996)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us256

As its title sests, the album consists of new and traditional murder ballads, a genre of songs that relays the details (and often consequences) of crimes of passion. "Where the Wild Roses Grow", a duet featuring Cave singing with Kylie Minogue, was a hit single and received two ARIA Awards in 1996. Other prominent guest musicians on the album include PJ Harvey and Shane MacGowan. Murder Ballads is the band's biggest commercial success to date, most likely helped by the unexpected repeated airplay of the "Where the Wild Roses Grow" video on MTV. MTV even nominated Cave for their "best male artist" award of that year, though this nomination was later withdrawn at Cave's request.

LADY BIANCA - Through A Woman's Eyes (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

While primarily a blues vocalist, Lady Bianca first earned notice as a session singer on a wide range of projects including recordings from Van Morrison, Frank Zappa and Merle Haggard. Born Bianca Thornton in Kansas City, Missouri on August 8, 1953, she was influenced by gospel as a child and studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music before lending her contralto to the role of Billie Holiday in an acclaimed production of Jon Hendrick's Evolution of the Blues; in the early '80s, she appeared on Morrison LPs including Beautiful Vision and Inarticulate Speech of the Heart, and also backed blues legends like John Lee Hooker and Willie Dixon. In the late '80s, Lady Bianca teamed with songwriter Stanley Lippitt, an alliance which yielded a number of tracks that grabbed the attention of Joe Louis Walker and in turn resulted in a record deal; she made her solo debut in 1995 with Best Kept Secret. Her long-awaited follow up appeared six years later on Rooster Blues.

COUNTING CROWS - August And Everything After (1993/2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR
Deluxe Edition 2007

With their stunning craftsmanship and a classic sound deeply rooted in whistlestop America, the anthems and rural overtones which distinguish the songs on "August..." evoke the same kind of visceral reaction which once greeted The Band. But "August..." is not an exercise in nostalgia. Some listeners have reacted to vocalist Adam Duritz's gruff, ecstatic vocals in the way they once responded to such dark angels of revelation and regret as Van Morrison and Michael Stipe.

Counting Crows were nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. "Round Here" was nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.

PINK FLOYD - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
40th Anniversary Edition

It's hard to believe that Pink Floyd's debut album came out 40 years ago. But it's true. While Floyd has undergone many changes in that timeframe--most notably the breakdown of Syd Barrett, the bitter fallout between Roger Waters and David Gilmour, and plenty of other drama and mysticism to insure the band's place in the pantheon of rock 'n roll history—the album still sounds fresh and vibrant, at least in terms of capturing the sound and style of 1967 era London. If you've never listened to The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, then you're definitely in for a treat. For the 3-disc set (which is really the way to go if you're going to splurge on the 40th Anniversary edition or if you've never owned the album prior) Disc's 1 and 2 present the album in its original mono, as well as a stereo version, respectively. Disc 3, meanwhile, serves up the group's earlier singles and some out/alternate takes of a few songs.

MARY GAUTHIER - Between Daylight and Dark (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

On her first albums Mary Gauthier often sounded like Lucinda Williams' even more haunted sister, mulling over the ways that excesses take their irrevocable toll. "Between Daylight and Dark," her fifth album, moves her closer to songwriters like John Prine. JONI MITCHELL - Shine (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

"Shine" may ultimately register as a "fans only" milestone, but it proves that Joni Mitchell retains many of the storied calling cards of her best albums. The searing lyricism of 1971's Blue and the penchant for self-redefinition hailed by 1974's Court and Spark make cameos here, but sadly, lesser efforts' drawbacks abound. True, "Big Yellow Taxi" reprises the environmental dystopia Mitchell first poeticized on 1970's Ladies of the Canyon, but the occasion only prompts new pedantic effrontery ("This Place," "If I Had a Heart"). In this regard, Shine's especially cloying title track marks the worst offender. Blissfully, though, "Hana" boasts a driving rhythm section and blurting squirts of electric guitar and saxophone in support of a compelling character sketch, and "If"- based on Rudyard Kipling's poem of the same name--paints a lyrical message of affirmation in bold strokes. Mitchell's songwriting shines brightest at such singularly poignant moments where specificity of images meets the vagaries of the instrumental arrangements, and, in the end, these and other highlights ("Bad Dreams," "Night of the Iguana") definitively carry the torch.

Melissa Lou Etheridge (born 196*, in Kansas) is an Academy Award-winning and two-time Grammy Award-winning American rock musician and singer. This is her 9th studio album, THE AWAKENING. It has been described as a collection of powerful and playful yet confessional and engaging songs that are personal as well as universal. THE AWAKENING was co-produced with David Cole and recorded with her band: bassist Mark Browne, drummer Mauricio ‘Fritz’ Lewak, and guitarist Philip Sayce. Etheridge acknowledges that her 2004 breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment brought new perspective to her life and achievements and freed her to be so open on this album.

BUDDY GUY - Can't Quit The Blues (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Born in 1936 and trained on a '50s Chicago blues scene that massively impacted rock & roll, Buddy Guy is perhaps the quintessential modern blues singer/guitarist. Guy's trademarks are a razor-sharp, seething electric guitar tone and anguished, soulful singing. The three-disc set CAN'T QUIT THE BLUES presents many high points from his lengthy career. Although there are more songs from 1990 onwards than one might expect-with only disc one providing a cross-section of his tenures with the Chess, Vanguard, and Delmark labels-many would argue that Guy's work from '90 on is in fact some of his very best.

Personnel: Buddy Guy (guitar); Eric Clapton, Jonny Lang, Otis Rush, Phil Guy, B.B. Bonham were a late 1980s British hard rock band founded by drummer Jason Bonham, the son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. In 1990, their debut album, "The Disregard of Timekeeping" topped the rock airplay charts and the success of the single, "Wait for You", helped Bonham garner a gold record. The band toured extensively for 2 years, but the impact of such early success on its young members caused a great deal of internal friction. FOCUS - The Best of Focus: Hocus Pocus (1993)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

"Best remembered for their bizarre chart smash "Hocus Pocus," Dutch progressive rock band Focus was formed in Amsterdam in 1969 by vocalist/keyboardist/flutist Thijs van Leer, bassist Martin Dresden, and drummer Hans Cleuver. With the subsequent addition of guitarist Jan Akkerman, the group issued its debut LP, In and Out of Focus, in 1970, earning a European cult following thanks to the single "House of the King." Dresden and Cleuver were replaced by bassist Cyril Havermanns and drummer Pierre Van der Linden for the English-language follow-up, Moving Waves; the record generated the hit "Hocus Pocus," a hallucinatory epic distinguished by Akkerman's guitar pyrotechnics and van Leer's demented yodeling. Easily one of the flat-out strangest songs ever to crack the American pop charts, the single peaked at number nine in the spring of 1973, by which time Focus had already exchanged Havermanns for bassist Bert Ruiter and issued their third album, Focus III, which yielded the minor hit "Sylvia." In the wake of 1974's Hamburger Concert, the band streamlined the classical aspirations of earlier efforts to pursue a more pop-oriented approach on records like Ship of Memories and Mother Focus; though roster changes regularly plagued Focus throughout the period, none was more pivotal than the 1976 exit of Akkerman, who was replaced by guitarist Philip Catherine for 1978's Focus con Proby, cut with British pop singer P.J. Proby. Focus then disbanded, with the original lineup reuniting in 1990 for a Dutch television special."

RUBETTES - Baby I Know (1977)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

The Rubettes were an English pop band of the 1970s assembled in 1973 by the songwriting team of Wayne Bickerton, the then head of A&R at Polydor Records, and his co-songwriter, Tony Waddington, after their doo-wop and 1950s American pop-influenced songs had been rejected by a number of existing acts. The band duly emerged at the tail end of the glam rock movement, wearing trademark white suits and cloth caps on stage. The Rubettes’ first (and biggest) hit was "Sugar Baby Love" (released in 1974) which was a UK number one, going on to sell around three million copies worldwide.

WILLIE NELSON - The Complete Atlantic Sessions (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

The legendary career of Texas-born music icon Willie Nelson has spanned six decades and stands as one of contemporary music’s greatest legacies. Nelson first rose to fame as a Nashville-based songwriter, penning many now timeless standards including "Crazy," a top hit for Patsy Cline. Feeling constrained by the Nashville music establishment, Willie relocated to Austin in the early ‘70s, where the melding of rock and country audiences made a huge impression on him. He began fusing folk and roots rock with a rebellious "outlaw" country flavor, inventing an authentic, stripped-down sound that remains vastly influential to this day. At this pivotal point in his artistic evolution, Nelson signed to Atlantic Records, delivering two signature albums revered as all-time masterpieces of his extensive repertoire, Shotgun Willie and Phases And Stages. This historic set presents remastered and expanded editions of these landmark classics, along with the also-expanded Live At The Texas Opry House, presented as a stand-alone disc for the first time.

DELBERT McCLINTON - Room To Breathe (2002)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Texas roadhouse veteran Delbert McClinton hit upon his masterful mix of country, blues, and R&B stylings decades ago, but it took the Grammy-winning 2001 release, Nothing Personal, to fully showcase his talents. Room to Breathe, once again benefiting from a diverse selection of original McClinton songs, updates and embellishes the approach with most of the same participants present. McClinton uses his classic blue-eyed-soul voice with full authority and more than a little eclecticism, bouncing through "Blues About You, Baby" with an almost Jerry Lee Lewis boogie feel, while infusing the snaky "Jungle Room" with laid-back nightclub coolness.

ROOM TO BREATHE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Blues Album.thumbup

This CD is never mentioned in all of those "top 100" collections in major magazines, but this is what it's ALL about! Only a man with the blues in his veins can turn it into hard rock like this. ROD STEWART - Absolutely Live (1982)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Recorded at some of the largest auditoriums in the world, Rod Stewart's Christmas-season cash-in, Absolutely Live, is a mostly noisy record that, in all its grand showbiz gesturing, plays to the back rows. Stewart's entrance, to the strains of "The Stripper," is strictly burlesque, as is the program that follows. True to that fanfare, he offers all the bump-and-grind hits from his disco playboy period and winds up stripping some of his worthiest older songs of their affecting nuances.

I don't know why these songs with stupid words are still in my head. Maybe,,,,hmmm, first kisses in disco clubs, early 70's, Soley, Soley...

Middle of the Road was a Scottish pop group who enjoyed great success across Europe in the early 1970s. They had three major hits in the UK Singles Chart, all of them bubblegum pop classics: "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" (Number 1), "Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum" (Number 2) and "Soley Soley" (Number 5), all in 1971. But in other European countries, their success continued well into 1972 and 1973, with songs like "Sacramento (A Wonderful Town)", "Samson and Delilah", "Bottom's Up" and "The Talk of All the USA".

STEVE MARRIOTT - Marriott (1975)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Steve Marriott was a successful and versatile English blue-eyed soul, singer-songwriter and lead guitarist. He is best remembered for his uniquely powerful voice and aggressive lead guitar in groups Small Faces (1965-1969) and Humble Pie (1969-1975).

In between the demise of Humble Pie and the reformation of The Small Faces, Steve Marriott found time to record his first solo record 'Marriott'. This classic album has been hidden away in the A&M vaults for many years having been deleted in 1980 and as such has never been available on CD. It has been much sought after by fans of The Small Faces and Humble Pie as well as those interested in Marriott's other solo material. The album has been digitally remastered and includes 10 electrifying tracks of soul and rock n' roll all delivered perfectly by the godfather of Britpop!

MIKE OLDFIELD - Music Of The Spheres (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"In this world, everything has a pulse or a vibration. This sound is unique to each living or non living thing and in itself creates a music that no-one can hear. I believe that this has a very powerful resonance with, and a deep effect, on our lives. What would happen if we took this further and apply this to bigger things , more powerful things ; like an entire solar system or galaxy say, what would that sound like? Musica Universalis is the ancient theory that every celestial body, the sun, the moon and the stars has an inner music. This is a harmonic and mathematical concept derived from the movements of the planets in the solar system. The music created is inaudible to the human ear. Music of the Spheres is my interpretation of this theory. Every planet and every star; even the whole universe has music within it that no-one can hear, this is what it would sound like if it was set free. This is Music of the Spheres." - MIKE OLDFIELD

TRAFFIC - Welcome To The Canteen (1971)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

If your familiarity with Traffic extends no further than the band's first two albums--1967's MR. FANTASY and 1968's TRAFFIC - you might not have thought about Traffic in terms of a performance entity. In fact, Traffic became quite a flexible live act, documented on half of LAST EXIT (1969), WELCOME TO THE CANTEEN (1971), and ON THE ROAD (1973). By the time of CANTEEN, Dave Mason had left the band. Traffic expanded its rhythm section of founding member Jim Capaldi (drums) and newcomer Ric Grech (bass) with drummer Jim Gordon and percussionist Reebop Kwaku Baah. Steve Winwood's playing and singing, along with Chris Wood's saxophones and flute, dance across this rhythmic field like young colts on a hillside. CANTEEN was recorded in London, and Dave Mason even shows up to guest on his own "Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave."

STEVE YOUNG - Lonesome On'ry & Mean (1997)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Steve Young is a singer/songwriter whose work encompasses country/rock/ soul/gospel. He describes his music as southern. Mr. Young is from Alabama but he was in California in the 60's and 70's and was part of the scene that included the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Crosby, Stills and Nash and so on. This CD has samples of his early intense sound from that period. During the 70's Mr. Young became, intentionally or unitentitonally part of the country music outlaws with Waylon Jennings. This cd has a generous sampling of Mr. Young most commercially successful music of the 70's. If you want to hear a broad sampling of an iconoclastic "Southern" singer, this is a good bet.

DEBORAH HARRY - Necessary Evil (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"Necessary Evil" is Deborah Harry's fifth solo album. Anyone hoping for the 62-year-old Debbie Harry to sit up and act her age will be sorely disappointed by the former Blondie vixen's sixth solo album (and first in 14 years). Viscerally contemporary, Necessary Evil harnesses youthful exuberance from across the charts, and Harry and her team of producers and songwriting partners do radio-ready rock, pop, and soul-lite with a la mode savvy to spare. Big-time sing-alongs ("Two Times Blue," "You're Too Hot") rub elbows with spare, distorted guitar lines piled in arena-sized stacks ("Love with Vengeance," "Charm Redux," and the especially vivacious "Whiteout"). "The Devil's dick is hard to handle," Harry growls in "School for Scandal," encapsulating the attitude of shameless defiance coursing through this and other lean, mean, up-tempo numbers like the half-rapped, full-lipped "Dirty and Deep." Between the reversed hip-hop break bisecting "Charm Alarm," the title track's stolen riff from Rage Against the Machine's "Know Your Enemy," and Harry's bits of Internet imagery, this album won't dare let go of its of-the-moment moxie. Gumdrops like the flaccid "What Is Love" and closer "Paradise" are irrevocable but few; in all, the occasional slice of tripe strangely sweetens Harry's otherwise surprising longevity, ready to rock and salty as ever.

OZZY OSBOURNE - Randy Rhoads Tribute (1987)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

"Randy Rhoads Tribute" is simply one the greatest live heavy metal albums ever released. Rhoads' playing is consistently firey throughout, a fact that confirms how tragic his early passing was. The first eleven tracks are from the DIARY OF A MADMAN tour, including such exceptional Ozzy solo tracks as "Crazy Train," "I Don't Know," "Flying High Again," "Mr. Crowley," "Suicide Solution," and the Sabbath nets "Iron Man," "Children of the Grave," and "Paranoid." "Goodbye to Romance" and "No Bone Movies" are from an earlier solo gig, and the final track, "Dee (Randy Rhoads Studio Outtakes)," is a stirring solo guitar piece. TRIBUTE confirms that this early solo Ozzy line-up featuring Randy Rhoads was his finest.

SAM BAKER - Pretty World (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Sam Baker is fast becoming one of the biggest underground Americana success stories of recent years. His album Mercy gained much critical and popular acclaim on the back of good old-fashioned word-of-mouth, with absolutely zero hype. Baker's much anticipated 2007 follow-up, Pretty World, is set to follow the trend, but will surely project this unassuming Texan out of his cult-hero status and into the mainstream conciousness. Sam Baker's vocal style is unique, and the delicate phrasing of his intelligent lyrics is supported by a sparse and beautiful backdrop of music. At times Baker almost talks through the songs, with his gravel tones inflecting deep humanity into the stories he is telling. Walt Wilkins and Tim Lorsch are responsible for the fine production qualities, and they bring out the best from stellar talents such as Joel Guzman on accordion, Lloyd Maines on dobro and steel, with Gurf Morlix and Marcia Ramirez adding vocals as appropriate to the needs of this excellent album. - Amazon.com

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN - Best Ballads (1996)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Yngwie Johann Malmsteen is a Swedish guitarist, composer and bandleader. He is arguably the most technically accomplished hard rock guitarist to emerge during the '80s. Combining a dazzling technique honed over years of obsessive practice with a love for such classical composers as Bach, Beethoven, and Paganini, Malmsteen's distinctively baroque, gothic compositional style and lightning-fast arpeggiated solos rewrote the book on heavy metal guitar.

ROBERT PLANT & ALISON KRAUSS - Raising Sand (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, two of the most distinctive vocalists in modern music, have collaborated on an album produced by T Bone Burnett and recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles with a stellar cast of supporting musicians, including guitarists Marc Ribot and Norman Black, multi-instrumentalist Mike Seeger, drummer Jay Bellerose and bassist Dennis Crouch. Plant is quick to define Raising Sand as more a band than a duet record, as it puts the two great singers in a variety of vocal and instrumental combinations – from songs featuring two-part brother-style harmony throughout to solo features for each. Though they come from entirely different traditions, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant create an amazing, unexpected and entirely new sound when they sing together.

ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS - The Twain Shall Meet (1968)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

1968's THE TWAIN SHALL MEET is gentle yet powerful R&B-laced psychedelic pop as good as anything that was being made in Burdon's adopted hometown of San Francisco that year. The opening "Monterey" is an engaging rewrite of the previous year's hit "San Franciscan Nights," and the album's other hit single, "Sky Pilot," is one of Burdon's best performances ever. The remaining six tracks take their time to unfold, but there's no aimless jamming or time-wasting repetition; every song is exactly as long as it needs to be. While many denigrate this era of Burdon's career in favor of what had come before, THE TWAIN SHALL MEET shows that Burdon made some powerful, lasting music in this period.

Just to prove that musical is cyclical, the '70s-era hard rock mastodons have strung together a dozen fiery performances of eleven great Dylan tunes ("Blowin' In The Wind" is availed of both heavy and soft acoustic readings) that, intentional or no, through choice and sequencing, represent nothing less than THE FIRST GREAT '00s PROTEST ALBUM!!!

CHRIS REA - Dancing Down the Stony Road (2002)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Chris Rea has traveled a long and relatively hard road during his career and bears the burden well, considering. Having only picked up the guitar at the not-so-tender age of 19 he has since established himself as one of the leading axemen in the world of music. Trailing along with him a string of modest hits along the way such as "Fool (if you think it's over)", "Let's Dance" and "The Road to Hell" this wandering Geordie troubadour has certainly left his mark. After a bout of severe pancreatic ails (requiring extensive surgery) a little over two years ago, he recently released an album "Dancing Down The Stony Road", which is a detour from his more radio-friendly sound towards some heartfelt blues.

MOJO BUFORD - Home Is Where My Harps Is (1998)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

When Muddy Waters deemed a harp player talented enough to follow Little Walter and James Cotton into his peerless combo, he must have been someone special. Mojo Buford spent several stints in the employ of the Chicago blues legend, and was his harpist of choice in the final edition of the Waters band. George Buford left Mississippi for Memphis while still young, learning his early blues lessons there. He relocated to Chicago in 1952, eventually forming a band called the Savage Boys that mutated into the Muddy Waters, Jr. Band (no, they weren't fronted by a Waters imitator; they subbed for their mighty sponsor at local clubs when he was on the road). Buford played with Muddy Waters as early as 1959, but a 1962 uprooting to Minneapolis to front his own combo, and cut a couple of solid but extremely obscure LPs for Vernon and Folk-Art, removed him from the Windy City scene for a while. Buford returned to Waters' combo in 1967 for a year, put in a longer stint with him during the early '70s, and came back for the last time after Jerry Portnoy exited with the rest of his mates to form the Legendary Blues Band. Buford recorded as a bandleader for Mr. Blues (later reissued on Rooster Blues) and the British JSP logo, never drifting far from his enduring Chicago blues roots.

Live from 1974 Montreaux jazz festival Buddy Guy and Junior Wells play with Pinetop Perkins and Bill Wyman. Sound quality is excellent, set selection is a nice combination of slow and fast tunes and Buddy and Junior do a nice job sharing the lime light. Buddy does a nice job of tone it down for Junior while still providing plenty of heat. Great rap with the crowd as well. RY COODER & VISHWA MOHAN BHATT - A Meeting by the River (1993)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Ry Cooder has long had an interest in other people's music, from the blues and gospel of black America through classic jazz and the music of Cuba. Even by this standard, his meeting with Mohan Vishwa Bhatt is certainly a departure. He is neither a serious student of Indian music nor in any way a master of its intricacies. Yet on his improvised session (this album was recorded without rehearsal in one evening), he and Bhatt truly collided musically and created moments worthy of the world-music Grammy they received for it. Bhatt is an iconoclastic character himself. He plays a modified box he calls the mohan vina that is a hybrid of a classical Indian instrument and slide guitar. He is long trained in the arduous classical style, yet his work has always demanded a lot of freedom. His duets here with Cooder are completely unique, liberating both artists from the usual constraints and creating a new musical style that is unlikely to be repeated or imitated. Excellelant improvisition and collaboration on east and west.

A MEETING BY THE RIVER won the 1994 Grammy Award for "World-Music Album."

MATT O'REE - Shelf Life (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Matt O'Ree has been cranking out the blues-rock since he was an early teen. With all the trappings of a genuine guitar hero, he plays with fire in his fingers and blues in his soul. At age 13, he sunk his roots in the blues - Albert King, Howlin' Wolf, to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. After establishing a good foundation, at age 15, Matt played in various bands, honing his skills through time and pure dedication. This led to Matt being an accomplished studio musician only two years later. Matt went on to study as a music major in college as well as start his own teachings with guitar students. While working as an intern at a recording studio, he began collaborating with various musicians trying to bring his idea to life. In the March 2006 issue of "Guitar World Magazine" there is a review of Matt O'Ree's latest release Shelf Life - appearing alongside numerous rock legends including Audioslave, Aerosmith, Jimi Hendrix, and The Deftones - that claims that "New Jersey's Matt O'Ree is quickly carving out a name for himself as 2006's new guitar hero."

MARTIN BARRE - A Summer Band (1992)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Martin Barre has been the guitarist for rock band Jethro Tull since 1969. He has appeared on every Jethro Tull album except This Was. His sound has been marked by a blend of Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton style blues with the baroque complexities of early 1970s progressive rock and traditional European folk music sounds. He has also acted as a flautist both on-stage for Tull, and in his solo work.

Limited Edition of *only* 1000 copies, released to close friends of Martin Barre/the Band, A New Day subscribers and charity concert guests who were lucky enough to be able to get a copy.

Recorded: 11 July 1992 at "The Summer Party" Devon, U.K. 15 July 1992 Verbeer Manor, Collumpton, 16 July 1992 at the Exeter Arts Centre and 18 July 1992 at the Jethro Tull Convention, Milton Keynes.

THE ANIMALS - Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted (1977)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

The Animals, at first one of the most blues-drenched and soulful, then one of the most psychedelic bands to come out of the U.K. in the 1960s, reunited in 1976. The digitally remastered BEFORE WE WERE... features the complete original version of the band engaging in heartfelt yet relaxed workouts on standards ("Many Rivers To Cross," Lonely Avenue," "It's All Over Now Baby Blue") and originals ("Fire On The Sun").

CARMINE APPICE PROJECT - Ultimate Guitar Zeus (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Over the years, drummer Carmine Appice has played with some of rock's all-time guitar greats, including Jeff Beck, Tommy Bolin, David Gilmour, Jim McCarty, and Ted Nugent. So it would make sense for Appice to call on a few six-string pals to lend a hand for a pair of solo releases from the mid - to late '90s - Guitar Zeus and Guitar Zeus, Vol. 2. In 2006 the Ultimate Guitar Zeus compilation was released, collecting 14 highlights from both albums on a single disc. Standouts include some truly hellacious guitar work from Nugent on the album-opening "Days Are Nights," Zakk Wylde ripping it up throughout "Code 19," and a hard rock reworking of the Appice co-penned Rod Stewart hit "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy," which features Pat Travers. And you've got to love an album that features hot-blooded tennis great John McEnroe on guitar (on the track "Stash"). While hardcore Appice fans will probably want to pick up each individual release, the streamlined Ultimate Guitar Zeus packs quite a wallop.

STEVEN SEAGAL

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

An accomplished actor, musician, martial artist, and philanthropist - there are the many facets to Steven Seagal. For over 25 years, Steven has brought an unparalleled passion for the arts that few can match. His deep spiritual roots are an integral part of his movies, his music, his martial arts expertise and his genuine love and care for others. From humble beginnings in Detroit, Michigan to finding his cultural center in Japan, to an acting career launched in 1988, to a flourishing music career and his involvement with Save A Million Lives, an AIDS project in Africa - this is Steven Seagal.

"Songs From The Crystal Cave" (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

"Songs from the Crystal Cave" is a 2004 album by Steven Seagal, his first. Seagal is credited with "Lead Vocals, Rhythm and Lead Guitar" and appears on the cover and throughout the liner notes emotively playing and posing with a guitar. Never released in America - perhaps for good reason - actor Steven Seagal's debut album as a musician is a kind of wonderful mess: it's so all over the place, it can't make up its mind what it wants to be. There are so many styles here - from adult contemporary to soft rock, triple-A format pop tunes, rock tunes fused with Jamaican dancehall (no kidding!), softcore, nocturnal urban blues, and faux soul - that finding the album's center is difficult, to say the least.

For a band that was together over 20 years (not always under the same name), backed up Neil Young and had a load of stars pass through their ranks, it still seems like this crew never got the respect they deserved. This collection gives as much focus to the Young association as possible without taking it off the Horse, this is a cool bunch of essential roots rockers that were so balls to the ball, Bob Xgau found a way to compare them to the Ramones. GLENN HUGHES - Music For The Divine (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"Music For The Divine"…intervention? Nope, the white man with the ’black’ voice is back. A real hardworker, you want believe the amount of effort he’s been up to the last - let’s say - 20 years. Even if his ’deeds’ date back to 1969 and the magical ’blues’ rockin’ music of Trapeze (pre-Judas Priest drummer Dave Holland plus early 80s Whitesnake axeman Mel Galley completed this wonderful trio), Glenn Hughes has not apparently stopped releasing solo albums or guest-appearing at other artists’ albums from 1985 onwards. And "what a quality in music", many would add in delight. Even if mostly known from his works with Trapeze and -mainly- Deep Purple, Englishman Glenn Hughes is not the kind of "pure" Hard Rocker many would assume. This was clearly seen, on first basis, by his 1976 solo debut "Play Me Out". Working in the Hughes/Thrall project plus for Gary Moore, Phenomena and Black Sabbath, Hughes achieved putting his ’groovy Soul-ie Rock’ personality into real Hard rockin’ albums (remember Sabbath’s "Seventh Star" album?). Also, something few seem to know is his ’guest’ participation in the early 90s KLF’s Techno Pop hit "America: What Time Is Love?". Meet the man…

STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN & DOUBLE TROUBLE - Blues At Sunrise (2000)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

A decade after his tragic, untimely demise, electric-blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan has left behind a void that remains largely unfilled, despite a number of ballyhooed young pretenders. The guitarist's career was long troubled by personal demons, and this album chronicles those deceptively languorous, slow blues jams where Vaughan did battle with them. The howling, fervent tone he coaxed from his instrument was a product of lessons learned only in the School of Hard Knocks, accompanied by a voice--perhaps the most underrated of Vaughan's talents--that perfectly underscored his tortured gospel. But those who stereotyped Vaughan as a paint-by-numbers bluesman misunderstood the breadth of his lexicon; listen to "Chitlins con Carne" (from the guitarist's posthumous The Sky Is Crying album) here and you'll hear tinges of Wes Montgomery and other jazz inflections. Especially notable are three previously unreleased cuts: a live version of "Texas Flood," a 1985 Montreux Jazz Festival duet-jam of "Tin Pan Alley" with the late Johnny Copeland, and an '84 outtake of Elmore James's "The Sky Is Crying"--plus a 15-minute TV-taping workout with Albert King on the elder legend's "Blues at Sunrise." Raw, passionate, and uncompromising, this is SRV at his gut-wrenching best.

FRANKIE MILLER - Long Way Home (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Frankie Miller’s fame, such as it is, derives from his 1978 hit “Darlin’, ” combined with songwriting credits for artists as diverse as Bob Seger and Bonnie Tyler. The fancy digipak enclosing Long Way Home illustrates the duality of the music inside, as well as Miller's relative distinction: his hoarse voice is his most profound means of communication. Frankie recorded nine chart albums for the Chrysalis and Mercury labels between 1972 - 1986 which yielded between them the hit singles, ‘Be Good To Yourself’ and ‘Darlin’ ‘. He is one of the legends of the British music scene, with a powerful voice that has drawn numerous comparisons. His distinctive voice and song writing ability have earned him the respect of his peers and that is reflected in the number of world renowned artists, including Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, Etta James, Cher, The Bellamy Brothers, Johnny Cash, Delbert McClinton, Bob Seger and Ray Charles, who have covered his songs.

ZEPHYR

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This late-'60s Denver group is most notable as the starting point for guitarist Tommy Bolin, who was still in his teens when they recorded their first album in 1969. A rather routine slab of bluesy, heavy rock, it made the Top 50. Aside from Bolin's extended hard rock riffing, it prominently featured the lead vocals of Candy Givens, who affected a blues-wailing pose along the lines of Janis Joplin. But she didn't have the full throat or guts to back it up, ending up closer to also-ran female psychedelic singers like Lydia Pense (of Cold Blood). Zephyr recorded one more album before Bolin left for stints with James Gang, Deep Purple, and a solo career; the group carried on with little success throughout the 1970s.

HEAVEN & HELL - Live from Radio City Music Hall (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

In 2006, the thunderous four-man Sabbath line-up fronted by Ronnie James Dio reformed in the studio to record three new tracks for Rhino’s Black Sabbath: The Dio Years. The chemistry between Dio, Vinny Appice and original Sabbath members Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler was so explosive that they agreed to officially reunite under the group name Heaven And Hell the title of their revered first album and hit the road. Marking the first time the hard rocking quartet had played live together in fifteen years, the launch of the Heaven And Hell tour has unleashed furious sonics and an awesome metal spectacle that’s been ecstatically received by fans. Recorded on March 30, 2007 at Radio City Music Hall in NYC, this extraordinary concert album captures the band bashing through Sabbath’s Dio-era best at a show that sold out in a matter of minutes.
