DAWN TYLER WATSON & PAUL DESLAURIERS - ...en duo (2007)
320
The long awaited duo album is finally here! The acoustic album by vocalist Dawn Tyler Watson & guitarist Paul Deslauriers is "one of the most raw and unencumbered records to come along in decades". In this day and age of digital manipulation and computer-generated overkill, this album takes us back to simpler times of front porch style musical honesty. A totally organic blend of folk, rock, roots & blues has been captured by this pair's premiere album.

POPA CHUBBY - Electric Chubbyland (2006)
320
Why Play Hendrix? "Good Question" says Popa from his secluded home studio nestled in the hills of the Hudson Valley. "In 1996 I got a call from a Dutch promoter asking me to be part of a Jimi Hendrix music festival. Several other guitar players were on the bill including Pat Travers, Steve Lukather, Walter Trout, Omar Dykes and others. We did 8 shows, it was a lot of fun, and then we went our separate ways. Over the next several years I was slammed with fan requests to play and record Hendrix. In 2005 another call came to tour in Holland doing Jimi's music and I could not resist. This time the demand and the response was even greater than in '96. It was the blues and rock thing coming together like never before. In 2006 I bit at the ring and decided to record the project at a club in Middletown New York. Electric Chubbyland was born."

MUNGO JERRY BLUESBAND - Adults Only (2003)
320
To anyone who merely remembers Mungo Jerry as the band who had a massive hit with ‘In The Summertime’ in 1970, it might come as a surprise to learn that they are not only still very much active on record and as a live band, but also still musically a force to be reckoned with. The group’s front man Ray Dorset has kept the name alive throughout the years and the personnel changes, sometimes fronting a full six-piece rock band, other times just performing as a soloist or as part of a duo. But of all the new recordings to surface over the last few years, it’s generally agreed that this album, the first to be released under the ‘MJ Blues Band’ appellation, is the best thing he’s done since the group’s chart heyday over thirty years ago. The four other musicians (Michael Pohl, guitars; Klaus Wenske, bass; Achim ‘Ako’ Patz, keyboards, harmonica; Klaus Otto, drums) are from Germany – and do the five of ‘em rock! Particularly as the entire album was recorded in Germany over three days in the spring of 2003, more or less live in the studio with a minimum of overdubs, remixing ad infinitum and all that self-indulgence.

JONNY LANG

Jonny Lang (1981) is a Grammy-winning American blues guitarist and singer. Lang started playing the guitar at the age of twelve after his father took him to see the Bad Medicine Blues Band, one of the few blues bands in Fargo. Lang soon started taking guitar lessons from Ted Larsen, the Bad Medicine Blues Band's guitar player. Several months after Lang started guitar lessons, he joined the Bad Medicine Blues Band, which was then renamed Kid Jonny Lang & The Big Bang. In more than ten years on the road, Lang has toured with the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, B.B. King, Jeff Beck, and Sting. In 1999, he was invited to play for a White House audience including President and Mrs. Clinton. Lang also makes a cameo appearance in the film Blues Brothers 2000. In 2004 Eric Clapton asked Lang to play at the Crossroads Guitar Festival to raise money for the Crossroads Centre Antigua.

COWBOY JUNKIES - Miles From Our Home (1998)
320
On their seventh album, the Cowboy Junkies hitch their pony to producer John Leckie (Radiohead, Verve) and inch closer toward the mainstream. As a result, Miles from Our Home's title track might be the group's most upbeat and infectious song ever. Unfortunately, it also means Miles is frequently too pretty and pleasant for its own good. Think more Sarah McLachlan, less Velvet Underground. Still, gloom reigns supreme. The atmospheric "Blue Guitar" and, presumably, the slow, shattered "At the End of the Rainbow" (a hidden track) mourn the late singer/songwriter and Junkie hero Townes Van Zandt. "Those Final Feet," a lilting, Band-like tune, marks the passing of the 94-year-old grandfather of the Timmins siblings, who comprise three fourths of the band. Translated through Margo Timmins's endlessly haunting vocals, such sentiments keep the Cowboy Junkies' cloudy mystique alive.

V.A. - The Blues White Album: A Tribute to the Beatles (2002)
320
This is not a new idea: in 2001 the English label Indigo produced a collection of Beatles songs by British and American blues artists. That was patchy, and so is this. The Beatles' heavy-handed treatment of "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" was intended (surely?) to be a joke, so for Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers to roll it flat like a steamroller is kind of missing the point. Pity it's the first track. In fact it's a pity the whole album wasn't reshuffled, because the best stuff only begins to appear about halfway through. Maria Muldaur's reading of "Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da" leeches out all its cuteness, Chris Duarte's guitar-playing in "I'm So Tired" belies the title, Charlie Musselwhite and Colin Linden go arm-in-arm with harmonica and guitar to take "Dear Prudence" for a long walk and Linden also makes a pretty country blues in the style of Mississippi John Hurt out of "Blackbird". Better than all these, however, is Joe Louis Walker's eight-minute version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", which it may not be fanciful to hear as a moving elegy for George Harrison.

POPA CHUBBY - How'd a White Boy Get The Blues? (2001)
320
Influenced by blues greats Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon, and the three Kings , Popa Chubby (aka Ted Horowitz) brazenly ventures into more contemporary waters while remaining true to his rootsy influences and the spirit of the genre. Chubby's fifth release for his fifth label commendably takes chances to break out of the strict electric blues-rock genre that he's worked so well in the past. That it doesn't always click is forgivable since he's at least aiming to expand his typically limited palette. Not quite a one-man band, Chubby at various times plays bass, drums, harmonica, dobro, and sitar in addition to his six-string duties, often overdubbing himself.

LEO SAYER in 70's
Please Leo Sayer, please Leo, please, please, please...! About 15 requests for his early albums.

Leo Sayer (born Gerard Sayer) had a string of highly polished mainstream pop hits in the late '70s. Sayer began his musical career as the leader of the London-based Terraplane Blues Band in the late '60s. He formed Patches with drummer Dave Courtney in 1971; Courtney used to play with British pop star Adam Faith. Faith was beginning a management career in the early '70s, so Courtney brought Patches to his former employer in hopes of securing a contract. Patches failed to impress Faith, yet he liked Sayer and chose to promote him as a solo artist. Sayer began recording some solo material written with David Courtney at Roger Daltrey's studio; the Who's lead singer liked the Sayer/Courtney originals enough to record a handful himself, including the hit "Giving It All Away." Sayer's debut single, "Why Is Everybody Going Home," failed to make any impact, yet 1973's "The Show Must Go On" hit number one in the U.K.; a cover by Three Dog Night stopped Sayer's version from charting in the U.S. The following year he released his first album, Silver Bird....

THE ALLMAN JOYS

192
The Allman Joys was an early band with Duane and Gregg Allman fronting. It was originally the Escorts, but it eventually evolved into the Allman Joys. Duane Allman quit highschool to focus his days at home practicing guitar. They auditioned for Bob Dylan's producer, Bob Johnston, at Columbia Records, backing a girl trio called The Sandpipers. In true Beatlesque style, Johnson was more interested in the girls... Eventually, they went on to form Hour Glass and then the Allman Brothers Band.
The Allman boys started playing publicly in 1961, joining or forming a number of small, local groups. Shortly thereafter Duane quit high school to stay home days and focus on his guitar playing. Their band the Escorts eventually became the Allman Joys. After Gregg graduated from Seabreeze High School in 1965, the Allman Joys went on the road, performing throughout the Southeast and eventually being based in Nashville and St. Louis.

DAVID CROSBY - Thousand Roads (1993)
192
David Crosby, the reluctant solo artist, made his first solo album, "If I Could Only Remember My Name", with an all-star guest list, then waited 18 years to make another. For his third solo album, "Thousand Roads", Crosby increased the participation of his guests and attempted to redefine himself as an artist. Where previously, whoever was playing or singing on the track, the song was a Crosby composition, on "Thousand Roads" Crosby acted primarily as an interpretive singer, penning only one of the 10 songs and contributing to two others. He also brought in eight people to help produce the album, as if this were a Whitney Houston project on which every song was a potential single. The result certainly was a craftsman - like set of songs written by pop professionals - Phil Collins, Jimmy Webb, Marc Cohn, John Hiatt, Paul Brady, Stephen Bishop - and produced by the cream of pop producers - Don Was, Glyn Johns, Phil Ramone.

RECKLESS KELLY - Best Of The Sugar Hill Years (2007)
VBR
Led by brothers Willy (vocals/guitar) and Cody Braun (vocals/fiddle/mandolin /harmonica), alternative country-rock outfit Reckless Kelly formed in Bend, OR, before relocating to Austin, TX, in January 1997. The Brauns had previously toured with their father in Muzzie Braun & the Boys, a Western swing band, and were joined in their own group by lead guitarist Casey Pollock, bassist Chris Schelske, and drummer Jay Nazz. Reckless Kelly's debut album, Millican, appeared in 1998; Acoustic: Live at Stubb's and Day both followed two years later, after which David Abeyta replaced Pollock on lead guitar. Under the Table and Above the Sun from 2003 began the band's relationship with the high-profile Sugar Hill label and won the hearts of the music press and honky tonkin' legend Joe Ely, who sang the band's praises in interviews. Wicked Twisted Road was released in 2005, and the next year the live album Reckless Kelly Was Here, which featured songs from all of their previous studio records, as well as three covers, and truly captured the band's stage presence, came out.

LYNARD SKYNYRD - Street Survivors (1977)
320
Street Survivors is a southern rock album by Lynyrd Skynyrd, released in October 1977 (see 1977 in music). Three days after the album's release, the band's chartered airplane crashed en route to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, killing the pilot and some band members, including lead singer and songwriter Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist/singer/songwriter Steve Gaines, and severely injuring most who survived the crash. Perhaps partially as a result of the attention garnered by the tragedy, the album and the lead single "What's Your Name" did quite well on the charts. After an extensive recovery process, the surviving original band members ultimately decided to disband Lynyrd Skynyrd. In the early 1980's, two derivative bands, The Rossington-Collins Band and The Allen Collins Band, rose from the figurative ashes of this rock n roll disaster to achieve moderate and minimal success, respectively.
The original pressing of the cover of Street Survivors had a photograph of the band standing in flames. Eerily, in the original cover, Gaines' eyes were closed and his head appears to be surrounded by flames. The cover was changed to an alternate photo with an all-black background in respect of the deceased. Today, thirty years later, the original "flames" cover is on the front of the case, while the alternate cover serves as the back of the case.

BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS - The Collection (2003)
320
Blood, Sweat & Tears (also known as "BS&T") was an American music group, formed in 1967 in New York City. It fused rock, blues, pop music, horn arrangements and jazz improvisation into a hybrid that came to be known as "jazz-rock". Unlike "jazz fusion" or simply "fusion", which tended toward virtuostic displays of instrumental facility and some experimentation with electric instruments, Blood, Sweat & Tears' sound merged the varied stylings of rock, pop and R&B/soul music with big band coupled with "combo" (small ensemble) jazz.

FOGHAT - Live II (2007)
VBR
Foghat was an English rock band that had its greatest success in the mid- to late-1970s. Their music was "blues-rock", dominated by electric & electric slide guitar, and the band achieved five gold records. The group remained popular during the disco era, but after the emergence of punk rock, the band no longer had a substantial audience, and they stopped performing live in 1984. The band featured Dave Peverett ("Lonesome Dave") on guitar and vocal, Tony Stevens on bass, and Roger Earl on drums. They added Rod Price on guitar/slide guitar and formed Foghat upon leaving Savoy Brown in December 1970. The 2000s saw the death of founding members Dave Peverett and Rod Price. Peverett died in February of 2000 from cancer, and Price died on March 22, 2005 from a heart attack as a result of a head injury sustained in a fall down a flight of stairs.
After the death of founder Dave Peverett, the band re-formed with two of the founding members (drummer Roger Earl, and bass player Tony Stevens), plus Bryan Bassett, and Charlie Huhn, (a vocalist for Ted Nugent for a brief time), released the studio album Family Joules in 2003 – the first without the late "Lonesome Dave" Peverett. Tony Stevens has since been replaced again by Craig MacGregor. In 2007 a follow up to the best-selling Live album was released - Live II.

HARRY NILSSON - Personal Best: The Harry Nilsson Anthology (1995)

Harry Edward Nilsson III (1941 – 1994) was an American songwriter, singer, pianist, and guitarist, most popular during the 1960s and 1970s. For most of his recordings, he did not use his first name, and was credited only as Nilsson. Despite some spectacular successes, including two Grammy Awards and two Top 10 singles, Nilsson's tendency to make broad stylistic jumps from one record to the next and his iconoclastic decisions kept him from capitalizing on those successes. His most well-known recordings are "Without You", "Everybody's Talkin'" (theme from the movie Midnight Cowboy) & "Coconut".

DEVON ALLMAN'S HONEYTRIBE - Torch (2006)
192
There's pressure to perform when your last name is Allman, and Devon Allman does that and more on the debut album with his band Honeytribe. The son of legendary Allman Brothers' singer and organist Gregg Allman, Devon shows the influences of both his father (guttural voice) and late Uncle Duane (lead guitar straight out of the blues). Just barely 30 years old, Allman has encircled himself with first-rate musicians who have latched on to the jazzy, jam band elements of the Allmans and their brethrens in Gov't Mule. Though Allman's vocals aren't as silky or golden-toned as his old man, he has an ear for a solid Southern riff, most evident by bluesy efforts like "Mercy Mercy" and the Z.Z. Top takeoff, "Why You Wanna Bring Me Down." But there are more serene highlights on the record, as well: the love song "No Woman, No Cry" and the instrumental "511 Texas Avenue," a solo acoustic tribute to his late grandparents that wouldn't be a misfit on "Eat a Peach."

ALBERT KING - The Blues Don't Change (1974)
320
Albert King (1923 – 1992) was an influential American blues guitarist and singer. One of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" (along with B.B. King and Freddie King), he stood at least 6' 4", weighed in at least 260 lbs (118 kg) and was known as "The Velvet Bulldozer".
Titled The Pinch when first issued on LP, the CD title is something of a misnomer because the blues has changed greatly during the 20th century and, during the Sixties and Seventies, the sides that Albert King cut for Stax Records in Memphis were key agents of evolution. The 11 cuts in this collection, made in 1973 and '74, find the innovative bluesman in the company of such Stax stalwarts as bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn and drummmer Al Jackson, Jr., as well as getting down with members of Isaac Hayes's crack band. Among the disc's many highlights are King's updated, decidedly funky version of "Oh, Pretty Woman," a tune he first recorded for Stax in 1966.

AMIE COMEAUX - Memories Left Behind (2006)

When 21-year old Amie Comeaux went to God on December 21, 1997, after a wet road accident near her Baton Rouge, Louisiana home, many mourned the loss as senseless and tragic. It was. The talented and vivacious singer songwriter had been out front of audiences since the age of two. Prior to her untimely death, her career was starting to move. She had been gaining wide recognition for her music, with many industry leaders predicting a future for the youthful humanitarian who was praised for her work with the elderly and the infirmed. Then, sadly, a straight stretch of road, heavy rain and a miscalculated tree ended the dream. For fans, those who enjoyed her previous albums -- "Moving Out" (1994) "A Very Special Angel" (1998) – this final release, an album with10 songs recorded before her death, the album will be a reminder that hers was a talent taken too soon.

EMMYLOU HARRIS - Cowgirl's Prayer (1993)
320
Emmylou Harris has aged more gracefully than any other country artist (with the exception of Willie Nelson). 1993's Cowgirl's Prayer showcases this maturity in a collection of songs that share wisdom, offer forgiveness, make amends, and explore spirituality. As always, Harris's voice is angelic and sad, her phrasing languid and lonesome. Lucinda Williams's "Crescent City" glows with tragic barroom neon while the classic "You Don't Know Me" takes on a deeper meaning, as if sung perhaps to an old friend or a lost relative? And while spoken-word delivery often falls flat, "Jerusalem Tomorrow" tells such a compelling story--and Harris's delivery is so knowing--that it haunts you long after it's over.

NEW YORK DOLLS

The New York Dolls are a rock band formed in New York City in 1971. In 2004 the band reformed with three of their original members, two of whom, David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain, continue on today and released a new album in 2006. The band found little commercial success during their existence, but the New York Dolls prefigured much of what was to come in the punk rock era and even later; the Dolls' over-the-top crossdressing influenced the look of many new wave and glam metal groups, and their shambling, sloppy but highly energetic playing style set the tone for many later rock and roll bands.

LORD SUTCH AND HEAVY FRIENDS - Hands of Jack the Ripper (1972)
192
David Edward Sutch (or Screaming Lord Sutch) (November 10, 1940 – June 16, 1999) was an English musician, politician and maverick. He couldn't properly be considered part of the British Invasion -- he never had a hit in the U.S. or the U.K. - but Screaming Lord Sutch laid some unheralded groundwork for the phenomenon. With a rock horror act based to a large degree on Screamin' Jay Hawkins, David "Lord" Sutch was one of the first genuine rock roll longhairs, and his bands employed such sterling instrumentalists as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Nicky Hopkins, and Mitch Mitchell before they became famous.

V.A. - American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1965 (1995)
192
The celebrated performers featured on this five-disc box - John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton, Howlin' Wolf, and Sonny Boy (Rice Miller) Williamson among them - were seasoned veterans when these recordings were made between 1962 and 1965. They were, however, far from over the hill. Brought to Europe as part of an annual barnstorming tour designed to introduce the blues to the old country, the forefathers (and a few mothers) of various strains of the genre basked in their chance to show their skills to appreciative foreign audiences. They also clearly enjoyed each other's company. The nature of the American Folk Blues road shows made for some fascination collaborations: The 1962 set, for example, finds Hooker, then in his brooding prime, backed by guitar legend T-Bone Walker - on piano! Willie Dixon (the MVP here), Otis Spann, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Mississippi Fred McDowell are just a few of the other legends who turn up in this expansive document of the blues revival that topped all blues revivals.
