Atomic Rooster was a British progressive-rock group formed in 1969 with an original lineup of Vincent Crane (organ), Nick Graham (bass), and Carl Palmer (drums). Their debut album, Atomic Rooster, hit number 49 in the U.K. in June 1970, after which Graham and Palmer left the group. Crane maintained the name and recruited guitarist/singer John Cann and drummer Paul Hammond for the second album, Death Walks Behind You, which hit number 12 in the U.K., where it featured the number 11 single "Tomorrow Night," and number 90 in the U.S. Pete French of Cactus assisted on the third album, In Hearing Of, which featured the number-four U.K. single "The Devil's Answer" and reached number 18 in England and number 167 in America. Then the group split up again, and again Crane assembled a new Atomic Rooster, this time featuring singer Chris Farlowe, guitarist Steve Bolton, bassist Bill Smith, and drummer Rick Parnell. Made in England reached number 149 in the U.S. in 1972, but the group had split again by 1974. Crane fronted lineups of Atomic Rooster into the '80s, before taking up with Dexys Midnight Runners in 1983. In 1989, he committed suicide.

Drawing from his southern roots and Skynyrd's fiery guitar fuelled legacy, the music is a hot burrito of fuel injected riffing (aided and abetted by twin lead guitarists Robbie Gay and Eric Lundgren) and the kind of down home back porch rocking that brings to mind the best work of Skynyrd, .38 Special, Marshall Tucker and the Allman Brothers Band. Look out for 'standing in the darkness' a poignant and touching tribute originally written as a poem for late brother Ronnie, surely one of the finest closing tracks on any southern rock album.

LAURA NYRO
Laura Nyro (1947-1997) was an American composer, lyricist, singer, and pianist, one of the most influential musicians to emerge in the 1960s. Her style was a distinctive hybrid of Brill Building-style New York pop, mixed with elements of jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, and rock. She blazed the trail for – and directly influenced – future composers including Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Donald Fagen, Todd Rundgren, and Rickie Lee Jones, among many others. She was best known and had the most commercial success as a composer and lyricist, rather than as a performer. Her best-known songs include "And When I Die" (a hit for Blood, Sweat & Tears), "Stoney End" (covered by Barbra Streisand), "Wedding Bell Blues", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness" and "Save The Country" (all covered by the Fifth Dimension), and "Eli's Coming" (a hit for Three Dog Night). Ironically, Nyro's own best-selling single was a cover of Carole King and Gerry Goffin's "Up On The Roof."

This four-disc box chronicles the development of Western swing from the Fort Worth Doughboys' 1932 recordings through its heyday in the late '40s. Along the way, the collection covers every major artist, from Bob Wills and Spade Cooley to pioneers like Milton Brown and Bill Boyd, who have been under-represented almost to the point of extinction in the CD era. It also includes Patsy Montana's groundbreaking hit single, "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart," and other fascinating tracks such as the Tex-Mex stomper "El Rancho Grande" by the Tune Wranglers, "Bring It on Down to My House" by Derwood Brown His Musical Brownies, and dozens of others. Unfortunately, this doesn't include anything after 1947, but such is the nature of Proper boxes. Besides, this doesn't claim to be an exhaustive chronology -- the subtitle, "The Golden Years of Western Swing," states the intent and, as such, this is magnificent stuff. Considering what's been included, it's hard to squabble over what's been left out ("Take Me Back to Tulsa," "Milk Cow Blues," and "Steel Guitar Rag" are notable examples), but pretend you don't know that and this set is perfect, containing every artist, every development, and every song that made Western swing a national phenomenon.

Rainbow Bridge was a free unpromoted Jimi Hendrix concert in a horse pasture, 3000 feet up the slope of Mt. Haleakala on the island of Maui in Hawaii. A modest audience of a few hundred island hippies, surfers, and students showed up because it was rumored that Hendrix might play a free concert for a movie that Chuck Wein was directing. It was also rumored that flying saucers were predicted to arrive and hover over the concert to meet Jimi. The saucers failed to show. This show on Maui was the last recorded Hendrix concert in the U.S. Some people mistakenly claim that this was the last live show Hendrix did in the U.S.; Hendrix actually did one more show in Honolulu, August 1, 1970, before his death on September 18, 1970 in London, England. The film that was made with the footage from the concerts and some psychedelic scenes is available now on DVD.

The Lovin' Spoonful was one of the very first bands to take part in the folk-rock boom of the mid-1960s, creating something of an East Coast equivalent to the Byrds' seminal L.A. jangle. The original group's lineup was regrettably short-lived, all their classic material getting released on Buddha records, so the label's definitive GREATEST HITS collection presented none of the usual cross-licensing difficulties. All the highlights of the Spoonful's '60s discography are here--the airy, transcendent pop of the jubilant "Do You Believe in Magic" and the almost Association-like "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice," the tougher rock sound of "Summer in the City," the romantic ballad "Darling Be Home Soon," and more. The rootsier side of the ensemble can be heard as well, on the likes of "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind" and "Jug Band Music." Led by John Sebastian's mellifluous voice and graceful songwriting and Zal Yanovsky's chiming guitar, the Spoonful turned out some of the most memorable singles of the '60s, and they're all right here.

Albert King is one of the three great Kings of the blues, and if he's not one of the most influential blues guitarists, his powerful string-bending attack is certainly one of the most imitated. Such highly respected guitarists as Jimi Hendrix, Otis Rush, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Carl Weathersby all based at least part of their guitar style heavily on King's muscular approach. Stevens plays these songs in King's style, but is more reverential than derivative. He never overdoes it, opting for a crisper, cleaner style. Vocally, he's always resembled Vaughan somewhat, but has gradually developed his own distinctive voice over time and does a great job on this disc. The band, which includes former AWB and Clapton drummer Steve Ferrone, is top-notch. Corey Stevens continues to amaze and impress with the depth and breadth of his talent on every release. "Albertville" is a wonderful tribute to one of the blues' biggest stars, by an artist who has learned his lessons well.

Scott Walker made his name as one half of the Walker Brothers (not brothers, and not called Walker!) in the mid-Sixties. Although American he found success after moving to the UK and stayed here during his solo career. A sporadic series of albums followed both as a solo artist and also reunited as the 'brothers'. 1984's 'Climate of Hunter' was his only album of the decade and his only for Virgin Records. It drew critical raves for a minimalist, trancelike ambience that showed him keeping abreast of cutting-edge '80s rock trends. Spooky Tooth was an English progressive rock band from the late 1960s end early 1970s. They faded into obscurity afterwards, facing problems similar to The Band, in that they were more popular among fellow musicians and industry insiders than with the general public, though they still have quite a few devoted fans.

Probably over 100 different artists can claim to have been part of The Jukes at one time or another. Artists like Bruce Springsteen, Max Weinberg, Little Steven, former miami horn Richard (La Bamba) Rosenberg and Jon Bon Jovi have been known to show up to play with the band. The heart of the Jukes has always been the vocals of "Southside" Johnny Lyon who also plays harmonica on many songs. Lead guitar was originally played by Billy Rush back in the days when "Miami" Steve Van Zant wrote and produced for the band. Billy also shared vocals with Southside on some tracks. Lead Guitar is now played by Bobby Bandiera who also gets a chance to sing some of his own songs with the jukes during most shows. The Miami Horns play with the band at most shows with the exception of the recent "Unplugged" tour. Southside continues to tour almost constantly, playing 'bars' up and down the eastern U.S. and occasionally does tours in Europe or throughout the U.S.

At a time when a growing number of pop songwriters were embracing a more explicitly poetic approach in their lyrics, the 1967 debut album from Leonard Cohen introduced a songwriter who, rather than being inspired by "serious" literature, took up music after establishing himself as a published author and poet. The ten songs on Songs of Leonard Cohen were certainly beautifully constructed, artful in a way few (if any) other lyricists would approach for some time, but what's most striking about these songs isn't Cohen's technique, superb as it is, so much as his portraits of a world dominated by love and lust, rage and need, compassion and betrayal. The new edition featured two bonus tracks recorded during the original sessions for the album, "Store Room" and "Blessed Is the Memory," and while neither is a major discovery, they're fine songs and worthy additions to the set.

On Standard Songs for Average People, John Prine and Mac Wiseman sound half-scared of the violence and heartbreak that breathes through the motley collection of tunes they've chosen to cover. Far from an exercise in nostalgia, Standard Songs communicates joy, existential dread, and something like wisdom. Recorded in very best sound quality in 1975 in the USA, we enjoy an energy-loaded, captivating gig of the quartet, which serves us with a high-proofed mixture of rock and blues. Johnny plays so fast, that it's hard to follow him with both of your ears - and the songs have lengths of 5 to 13 minutes. From the cover versions it's Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" that stands out, while the original Stones version of "Jumping Jack Flash" can't be reached for eternity, IMO. Not only because there are only so less live-CDs items by Johnny Winter this release deserves special attention.
