INDIGO GIRLS - Despite Our Differences (2006)

The Indigo Girls (Emily Saliers - vocals, guitars, mandolin, ukulele anad Amy Ray - vocals, guitars, mandolin, harmonica) may still be the soft, folky females that tough rocker dudes love to mock, but the pair's 11th studio album serves to remind that Amy and Emily have been making surprisingly consistent albums packed with sharp songwriting and performances for a remarkably long time. In spite of the title, there's more that binds than separates this duo. After two decades of playing together, the former school pals think, act and even breathe as a single entity, weaving such a taut tapestry of sound that you'd think they were blood relatives. On their first record for a new label, they tackle the personal and the political, both Bush's wrongheaded approach to terrorism and the emotional terrorism of a disintegrating relationship. But despite the unstable subject manner, there's something reassuring about their warm, engaged voices, homespun philosophies and punkish attitude.
