KOKO TAYLOR - Old School (2007)
320
With her first album in seven years, the aptly titled Old School, Taylor once again shows the world what she does so well. From foot-stomping barnburners to powerful slow blues, Koko proves in an instant that her blues are joyous and life-affirming, powerful and soul-stirring. With Old School, Taylor brings it all back home, supported by a band of veteran musicians and young revivalists. Singing like she did for Chess Records early in her career, Taylor belts out a set of material that could easily have topped the blues charts in the 1950s, and will certainly reach the top of the blues world today. Koko Taylor, guitarist Criss Johnson and Alligator president Bruce Iglauer produced Old School. Recorded in Chicago, the 12 songs (including five new Taylor originals and songs by Willie Dixon, Magic Sam, Lefty Dizz, and E.G. Kight) all hearken back to Taylor's early years in the Windy City. They range from the humorous truth of Piece Of Man to the rocking blues advice of Better Watch Your Step to the tough street scene of Bad Avenue (done in classic Muddy Waters style), to Koko's version of Memphis Minnie's Black Rat, a song she used to sing as a teenager. "I put my heart and soul into everything that I do," says Taylor. "I worked long and hard on Old School, and I want my fans to enjoy it as much as I do."

V.A. - Big Blues Extravaganza: The Best Of Austin City Limits (1998)
320
Here's a beautiful blues buffet from deep in the heart of Texas, courtesy of the long-running Austin City Limits television series. Texas talents--including Lightnin' Hopkins, represented by a suitably idiosyncratic "Rock Me Baby"; the razor-sharp Albert Collins, ripping through "Travellin' South" in front of a horn-powered band; and W.C. Clark, the godfather of the Austin blues scene, who sparkles on a song by hometown hero Willie Nelson--make the most of their spotlight time. And, naturally, there's Stevie Ray Vaughan, who leads Double Trouble through a tight and tasty "Love Struck Baby." Jimmie Vaughan's tribute to his blues brother, "Six Strings Down," follows in an example of the collection's creative sequencing. In like manner Gatemouth Brown's "Born in Louisiana" leads into Dr. John's New Orleans version of "Since I Fell for You," and Clark's rendition of "Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away" segues into B.B. King's personalized cover of Nelson's classic "Night Life." The honorary Austinites, including a rambunctious Buddy Guy and a solo Rory Block, also make considerable contributions, the best probably being Taj Mahal bouncing through "Queen Bee" with Ben Harper on slide guitar, although Keb' Mo's straightahead "Tell Everybody I Know" isn't far behind.

JAMES BROWN - Star Time (1991)

320
It would seem impossible to summarize James Brown's contribution to R&B--to American music--in a mere four compact discs, but somehow Star Time does it. This boxed set charts Brown's early rise as a hard-hitting R&B-styled vocalist ("Please Please Please," "Try Me") and shows how his bandleading skills (one can't forget inventive players like saxophonist Maceo Parker, bassist Bootsy Collins, drummer Jabo Starks, and many others) changed the face of soul and invented funk in the '60s and early '70s with impeccably timed ("Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"), highly rhythmic ("I Can't Stand It"), primal ("Licking Stick Licking Stick") hits. The box also does a definitive programming job on Brown's more spotty later years--another plus. This is where beginners should start, but several extended versions and rarities (like "Papa," raised an octave on original release, at normal speed) make it a must for completists too.

GAIL MULDROW

Gail Muldrow offers an irresistible mixture of blues, funk, soul, r&b, rock, grunge, heavy metal ... you name it. For Gail there are no boundaries and she knows how to blend all those musical genres into one original Gail Muldrow style. She belongs to those great Bay Area musicians who are difficult to place into one category. She is definitely a musician's musician and for those who heard her play and sing, another example for the fact that good music isn't necessarily always to be found on radio or music television. Just to change that, Gail would deserve much more attention. Very early in life Gail, who is a native San Franciscan, picked up the guitar and played on Sly Stone's album "High On You" in 1975 - then known as Cousin Gale. Since that time Gail Muldrow has been an important fixture in the SF music scene. She has also become a member of the Family Stone - not in the sense that she played on any of the other Sly and the Family Stone albums during Sly's time - but she is a driving force in bringing back together what
remains of the Family Stone in various combinations. She has been a member of Family Without Stone around 1989 and in 2004 she joined The Family Stone Experience aka Life: The First Family of Funk - featuring former Family Stone members Gregg Errico and Jerry Martini. The latter says that "Gail Muldrow is one of the finest singers and entertainers anywhere in the world". With that connection it is pretty obvious that Gail's guitar playing involves a lot funk. Although she has not been a member of Sly and the Family Stone in the 70s, she has been a member of Graham Central Station then for two years and is featured on the 1977 album "Now Do U Wanta Dance". In addition Gail played with famous funk musicians like Prince and Chaka Kahn.

PAUL KOSSOFF - Koss (1977)
128
Throughout the years, rock music has been littered with talented musicians whose lives were cut short due to drug-related deaths. Free/Back Street Crawler guitarist Paul Kossoff was one such casualty. Kossoff was born in London, England, on September 14, 1950, and early on studied classical guitar (before giving up on the instrument by his teenaged years). But upon discovering the British blues-rock movement of the '60s, Kossoff's interest in guitar perked up once again, especially after catching a John Mayall's Bluesbreakers live show with Eric Clapton. Kossoff soon purchased an electric guitar (a vintage Gibson Les Paul, which eventually become his trademark guitar) and began playing in local bands. Through one such band, Black Cat Bones, Kossoff became good friends with their drummer, Simon Kirke, who would serve a prominent part in Kossoff's musical future. Eventually feeling that the band had reached its zenith, the band broke up after the Black Cat Bones backed bluesman Champion Jack Dupree on a song called "When You Feel the Feeling."...

RUBEN STUDDARD - The Return (2006)
320
After a brief detour into the realm of gospel (2004's I NEED AN ANGEL), AMERICAN IDOL winner Ruben Studdard is back with more vintage-tinged loverman soul on 2006's THE RETURN. As on the singer's 2003 debut, SOULFUL, THE RETURN is littered with musical nods to Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye, and works mid - to downtempo grooves to sensual effect. Studdard's smooth, velvet voice glides easy as the breeze, making good on his moniker "the velvet teddy bear." There are a few uptempo dance cuts here, and the production is au courant enough to sound at home on urban contemporary radio, but Studdard's real forte is in slow bedroom jams, and THE RETURN delivers on that count.

JOE BONAMASSA - You & Me (2006)
320
The popularity for blues seems to come in cycles. The current period has been particularly long-lived, and that has really been a great boon for the music, and artists who make it. A previous big blues boom took place in the 1960s when a generation of rock fans discovered the music indirectly though then-young, largely British musicians who heard recordings by some of the original artists of the 1940s and 1950s Chicago scene and transmogrified the music in their own way. Some of the biggest names in rock were part of that British blues scene, including The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, and even Pink Floyd and the Moody Blues. The current blues scene is a bit more authentic, if you will, hewing more toward the classic and traditional sounds, as played by veteran American blues artists. But the British-influenced blues-rock scene was also the source of a lot of what has become the lexicon of so-called "classic rock," and led to styles from heavy metal to Southern rock. This week, we have a new recording that, though blues-based, is definitely in the electric blues-rock tradition going back to the 1960s. It's the latest by guitarist Joe Bonamassa called You and Me.

BO DIDDLEY - His Best (1997)
320
This is part of Chess Records' 50th Anniversary series. The Chess Records' "His Best" compilations are generally outstanding, and the Bo Diddley installation is no exception. Outside of purchasing Bo's key studio albums, or shelling out for the comprehensive box set, HIS BEST is the Bo Diddley disc to have, since it covers all of his essential hits, from "Roadrunner" to "I'm a Man" to "Hey! Bo Diddley" to "Who Do You Love?" But the real surprise here is the quality of the remastering, which brings out a real crispness and edge to the recordings, and the "longer cuts" that result from re-edits to the original masters. Also here, of course, are the infectious, hugely influential Bo Didley beat, the rumbling, ch-chinking guitar, Bo's neo-blues wails and self-mythologizing lyrics, and everything else that makes this music some of the absolute best and most important in the chapters of early rock & roll.

THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT - The Definitive Collection (1997)
320
Through the late '70s and most of the '80s, respected recording - engineer - turned - composer /instrumentalist Parsons teamed with lyricist Eric Woolfson and a loose aggregation of studio musicians and guest singers to record a series of seemingly uncommercial, but surprisingly successful concept albums. Each combined masterful studio craft with eclectic lyrical themes. The Definitive Collection is a useful 2 CD distillation of material from the Project's album catalogue, and features FM-friendly tunes like "I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You," "Eye in the Sky," "Time," and "Old and Wise," and lead vocals from the likes of John Miles, Hollies leader Allan Clarke, and Zombies frontman Colin Blunstone.

JIMI HENDRIX - The Ultimate Experience (1993)
320
"Surprisingly well chosen for a best-of assembled from the results of a fan poll, The Ultimate Experience brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and career-defining live shots on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the record does hang together as a listen. Its blend of Hendrix-the-rocker and Jimi-the-underrated-soul-man is suggestive, painting a picture of a multifaceted genius and transcending its plainly mercenary origins. In the end, its effect--like that of all Hendrix's best records--is to remind us of a Jimi very, very much alive."

MARY CHAPIN CARPANTER - The Calling (2007)
224
As a songwriter and performer, Mary Chapin Carpenter has long since transcended the traditional notions of genre and style, finding widespread acclaim for her poetic, elegantly - observed compositions. The Calling is the most topical album she's made in her twenty-year career. While it unequivocally addresses issues both public and political - from the after-effects of Hurricane Katrina to religious zealotry to the trial-by-radio of the Dixie Chicks - there is also something deeply personal about this extraordinary collection of songs. The album is a powerful, provocative meditation on the mysteries of fate and circumstance, which mingles timeless questions with contemporary issues. Introspective, defiant and deeply resonant, The Calling is a profound set from one of modern songwriting's most distinctive voices.

COWBOY JUNKIES - At The End Of Paths Taken (2007)
VBR
2007 album from the veteran Canadian alt/country rock group that the band "think is a swell piece of work". It's their first formal album in almost a decade (ignoring the soundtrack of the movie "Lost & Delirious"). Despite its title, the new Cowboy Junkies album, At the End of Paths Taken, is as much about new beginnings as it is about endings. It is also about human connections, the struggle to sustain those connections over time, and the complexities that can arise even when those connections are maintained. It is, in other words, a classic Cowboy Junkies album - a suite of smart, richly textured songs that value subtlety over broad, generic strokes, songs that prize insight and casual revelations over easily digestible clichés.

WILLIE NELSON - Milk Cow Blues (2000)
320
MILK COW BLUES was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Though he's best known as a country artist, Willie Nelson has always been bigger than that. He's recorded albums of everything from popular standards to guitar instrumentals with equal aplomb. So this blues album should come as no surprise to longtime fans, especially given the fact that the kind of sophisticated, urbane, Charles Brown-style blues he tackles on much of MILK COW BLUES was a key component of some of Nelson's early work. Willie's joined here by a bevy of guest artists; blues stars both new and old, including B.B. King and Susan Tedeschi. The lion's share of the cuts here are duets, where the seemingly egoless Nelson is happy to share the spotlight with his talented friends. For all the sparks those duets generate, however, its a tribute to the man's unique gifts that the most effective tracks turn out to be Willie's solo turns.

PHILLIP WALKER- Going Back Home (2007)
192
Phillip Walker has been recording and performing the blues since the 1950’s. As a second cousin to “Gatemouth” Brown and a young fan of T-Bone Walker his style developed at home in Texas and while touring or backing blues artists such as Roscoe Gordon, Clifton Chenier, Johnny Shines and Eddie Taylor. Blues artist Rusty Zinn lends his masterful guitar playing to a few tunes and really compliments Phillip Walker’s style and sound a lot. This disc has a wonderful mix of styles and classic songs as well as catchy new originals by Phillip and Delta Groove producer Randy Chortkoff. I’d like to recognize Delta Groove Productions for the wonderful work they are doing promoting and enhancing the sound of many great blues musicians with each new release.

Two years ago, Canadian blues artist Sue Foley put together a two-CD compilation called Blues Guitar Women. BRETT ANDERSON - Brett Anderson (2007)
VBR
"Brett Anderson" is the highly anticipated debut release from one of the most significant UK songwriters of the past 15 years. The man behind the voice of Suede, who formed a cornerstone of Britpop in the 1990s, Brett Anderson's solo effort opens a new chapter in his illustrious career. Bristling with angular acoustics and supple strings, the album is an arsenal of songs for an unsettled world. Highlights include the emotive, soul-baring 'Song For My Father', the smouldering, melodic 'Scorpio Rising' and the defiantly catchy 'One Lazy Morning'. The album also includes the single 'Love Is Dead', a dynamic, passionate and personal song, which perfectly reflects the tone of the album.

AL ''Coffee'' McDANIEL - A Shoe Is A Shoe (2006)
192
"New-School Soul Music" is how to best describe AL "Coffee" McDaniel. His various styles will remind you of Barry White, Marvin Gaye, and Frank Sinatra all wrapped-up into one voice. He effectively mixes R & B, Blues, NEO-Soul, and Jazz melodies with cool modern urban beats. His rich baritone voice is very smooth and soothing to the ear. The emotions, passions, and energy that he expresses with his voice, and his soulful guitar riffs, makes him unique as a crooner, and as a seasoned musician. His Jazzy, Bluesy, and Original guitar playing style makes it very difficult to limit his music to just one category, or genre.

IAN PARKER - Where I Belong (2007)
192
GREAT ALBUM!!! [RE-UP]
For the last decade Ian has been on a journey of discovery, a journey which although far from over, has already provided the young artist with a vast array of experiences which have shaped his musical identity. 'Where I Belong' is the result of this lengthy artistic process. If he was ever in any doubt, Ian Parker certainly knows who he is now. Unquestionably, a relevant 21st century blues man, Ian is acutely aware of the heritage of his music, as is evident on the passionate 'Love So Cold'. Equally he is in tune with the music of the modern age, as is apparent in the eerie 'Don't Hold Back' and the tortured 'Told My Girl To Go Away', and is able to incorporate those ingredients into his own blues stew - an essential factor in the long term preservation of the genre. 'Until You Show Me', 'Sweet Singing Sirens', and 'Before Our Eyes' are perfect examples of this amalgamation of styles, and of Parker's unique approach to writing.

ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL - The Swingin' Best Of Asleep At The Wheel (1992)
VBR
Tracking Asleep at the Wheel's recording history is a bit like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. The band has released titles on at least 10 different labels, creating particular confusion for those interested in
purchasing a "Best Of" compilation; nearly every label the band has recorded for has one, each claiming to contain the greatest hits. One such package is THE SWINGIN' BEST OF, which collects tracks from the band's three Epic albums and includes two Top 40 hits ("House of Blue Lights" and "Way Down Texas Way"). SWINGIN' BEST focuses primarily on 1987's 10 and 1988's WESTERN STANDARD TIME, although it also includes two tracks from an eponymous 1974 release (you can't miss them: the production is much rawer than on the other eight tunes). Serious fans of the band will probably want to buy the albums and skip the hits package; others may want to consider doing the same, especially since WESTERN STANDARD TIME is among the group's finest efforts. Those who opt for SWINGIN' BEST shouldn't be disappointed, however. As its title implies, it's a rock-solid collection from one of country's best traditionalist outfits.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE – Never Enough (1992)
192
An album that never spawned hits on the magnitude of "Bring Me Some Water" or "I'm the Only One" from her debut, Melissa Etheridge's sorely overlooked third effort is a gold mine of poetic contemplation, sensual declarations, and emotional pleas. Of her first five albums, Never Enough is the one that best shows her range. Stepping away from electric guitar - based rock and blues and toward such exploratory tunes as the piano-backed "The Letting Go," the beat- and sample-driven "2001," and the uncommonly poppy "Dance Without Sleeping," Etheridge proves she's not a one-riff musician. She seems to push through her stylistic fears a bit, yet stays comfortably within the boundaries that her raspy belt can reach. Never Enough offers a healthy dose of Etheridge's trademark soul-twisting rock in the form of "Ain't it Heavy" and the angry, possessive of "It's for You." But the addition of pattern-busting songs makes this album a particularly mature, rich, pleasurable listen.

TOM WAITS - Blue Valentine (1978)
160
BLUE VALENTINE is full of low-rent nightlife imagery and arrangements that leave Waits' jazz leanings behind in favor of a more direct, blues - oriented approach. Lyrically, he's at his most straightforward and narrative, with tunes like "$29.00" and "Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis" reading like dimestore detective novels. In a customary nod to tradition, he delivers a marvelously stentorian version of Bernstein's "Somewhere." Things close in a low-key fashion with the spare, heart - rending title song, a ballad of shattered love.

RICKIE LEE JONES - The Sermon On Exposition Boulevard (2007)
192
Rickie Lee Jones is a two-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist, musician, and songwriter from the United States. Over the course of a three-decade career, Jones has recorded in various musical styles including jazz, R&B, blues, pop, soul, and standards.
THE SERMON ON EXPOSITION BOULEVARD, the new album by Rickie Lee Jones and her first for New West Records, is a beauty--soul-satisfying and sonically unique. RICKIE LEE sounds completely tapped in, alive and vital, heading down some mighty interesting roads and discovering new magical essences. Lots of creative sparks here--plenty of them. She sounds like she's going through a transformation throughout the album in a way that's reminiscent of Van Morrison's performances on his classic album Astral Weeks.
